  1. I decided to change a bit what I will cover specifically this morning, and this being verses 5-9.

  2. Because there are just way too many implications to pull out of this, to rush right past it.

  3. Many of you who attend here regularly know that I've said before to you that my notes for approximately a 45-minute sermon are usually about 5 pages.

  4. And you'll appreciate my decision to do this by knowing that I copy and pasted three pages worth out in the trimming down of verse 10 and 11 this morning.

  5. So, I believe it's wise for us to proceed in this manner.

  6. And you just have to stick with me.

  7. Try to follow my logic and my reason as we look at verses 5-17, today being part 1.

  8. And then we'll develop upon it in the coming weeks.

  9. I appreciate Ash reading already to us verses 5-17.

  10. Let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  11. It has meaning and bearing for us today and that we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  12. The primary exhortation of the text this morning, I believe, is found in the last part of verse 9 and the first part of verse 10.

  13. Seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self.

  14. So there are two driving points here.

  15. Firstly, that we are to put off the old self.

  16. Stated in the negative.

  17. Do not do these things.

  18. Do not do sins of commission.

  19. Those things that we are told not to do.

  20. Stated in the positive, the other major point of verses 5-17 is that we ought to put on the new self.

  21. Instead of doing these things, rather live in this way.

  22. And this morning we're going to talk about putting off the old self and in the coming weeks what it looks like,

  23. what it means to put on the new self.

  24. So you have essentially this morning a single point for part one and that is put off the old self.

  25. We see it there in the last part of verse 9.

  26. Also stated in verse 5, Paul says,

  27. Put to death, therefore what is earthly in you.

  28. And he doesn't mean this literally, but rather figuratively.

  29. There have been men throughout history who have misunderstood this and misunderstood the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 5, 29-30.

  30. Where he said,

  31. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.

  32. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

  33. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.

  34. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

  35. We have seen Paul's warning.

  36. Kyle did a wonderful job of speaking to us about the pointlessness of asceticism,

  37. of disciplining ourselves in the external.

  38. And they have no real value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

  39. But Jesus isn't speaking literally in Matthew 5, 29-30.

  40. And neither is Paul in verse 5 here of chapter 3.

  41. I'm thankful for verse 8.

  42. He gives us some help and some clearer understanding as he says,

  43. But you now must put them all away.

  44. He helps us to understand that this is not a literal putting to death,

  45. killing our bodies, but rather figuratively killing that sin that so easily ensnares.

  46. Paul wrote in Romans 8, 13,

  47. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  48. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

  49. Not the actual body, but rather the deeds of the body we are meant to put to death.

  50. And Paul in our text gives us two lists of sins that are to be put off or to be killed in us.

  51. And these are certainly not exhaustive lists of all sins that ever needed to be put to death.

  52. But he gives us these two lists and he gives them to us categorically.

  53. Firstly, we see a set of sins that are sins of unrighteous love.

  54. Sins of unrighteous love or misplaced or perverted love, if you prefer.

  55. And these are sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

  56. The phrase here in the Greek for sexual immorality is the word that we get our English word for pornography from.

  57. It's a very broad word.

  58. It includes any form of illicit sex.

  59. Sex is given to us as a good gift when it's exercised in its proper context.

  60. In case anybody has any doubt about what context that is,

  61. sex is a good and a perfect gift that should be done with joy

  62. in a committed relationship with a single person of the opposite sex bound together in covenant marriage.

  63. This is when it's a good and perfect and beautiful and wonderful gift.

  64. Any other form of it, any other form of it is not.

  65. It's sexual immorality.

  66. It's an offense to God and His good design in the world.

  67. Paul then says we're to put off impurity.

  68. And the word means filthiness or uncleanliness.

  69. It's a broader term than sexual immorality in that it includes thoughts and intentions.

  70. So not simply the acts, but also the thinking about or the intentions of our hearts.

  71. Jesus refers to this sin in Matthew 5.28 when He says,

  72. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent

  73. has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  74. And to further compound Paul's exhortation here to put off these types of sin,

  75. he talks about passion and evil desire.

  76. There's not a great distinction in these original terms from the previous two.

  77. And I wrestled and turned them over and tried to figure out why specifically Paul listed them out in this way.

  78. I think he's just driving his point.

  79. He's giving us a slightly different flavor to the way in which they would have read these words.

  80. We do the very same thing when we preach on Sunday morning.

  81. We give you multiple definitions.

  82. We give you multiple words to help you wrap your mind around and understand.

  83. As an example, I said to you that the first list of sins are sins of unrighteous love.

  84. And I said, or misplaced or perverted love.

  85. So he's piling up the descriptors to help us understand how it is we're meant to not live.

  86. Passion means sexual passion set loose.

  87. And somebody's passions being acted out upon.

  88. And then the evil desire in this context, meaning the sexual lust created in the mind.

  89. Paul goes really hard against these types of sins.

  90. And these are sins that are running rampant in our world.

  91. They always have, certainly to be true.

  92. But today, they are certainly running rampant.

  93. Not just outside the borders of our church, but within as well.

  94. Spend a little bit of time with the men in our church and you know that this is true.

  95. And this should not be so.

  96. Paul also says that we're to put off covetousness, which is related.

  97. The insatiable desire to have more or to have what is forbidden.

  98. To have things that don't belong to us.

  99. The final and tenth commandment that was given to Moses.

  100. This covetousness is idolatry.

  101. And it's idolatry because it places selfish desire above obedience to God.

  102. We worship the thing created when we covet it, rather than the one who creates all things.

  103. To speak of covetousness is to speak of a very broad sin.

  104. We could put many things, lump many more specific sins underneath this sin of covetousness.

  105. William Barclay, who is a 20th century Scottish theologian that I would commend to you,

  106. wrote, covetousness is a sin with a very wide range.

  107. If it is the desire for money, it leads to theft.

  108. If it is the desire for prestige, it leads to evil ambition.

  109. If it is the desire for power, it leads to sadistic tyranny.

  110. If it is the desire for a person, it leads to sexual sin.

  111. And clearly what's being said here is not just the thing it leads to is sin,

  112. but the desire for it is sin itself.

  113. And we should have nothing to do with these things as Christian people.

  114. Secondly, Paul gives us a list of sins of unrighteous hate.

  115. Or wicked hate, if you prefer.

  116. There are certainly things that we should, as Christian people, hate.

  117. My own sin is a thing that I should despise.

  118. This would be a righteous hatred.

  119. Paul here is listing for us things that are of an unrighteous or wicked nature.

  120. Anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk, and lying.

  121. Anger is this idea in the Greek of a deep, smoldering, resentful bitterness.

  122. Those of you who have camped, I hope all of you have,

  123. and seen a fire when you wake up in the morning and it's still burning down in the deep in the embers

  124. and all it takes is stirring them and laying a little bit of wood back on top

  125. and it bursts right back into flame.

  126. This is kind of the picture going on here.

  127. This is the anger that's being spoken of.

  128. This is the kind of anger that characterizes an angry person.

  129. Provocation of this person is not what causes the anger.

  130. It's merely the thing that gives vent to the anger that already exists.

  131. This is a state of being that Paul's talking about here.

  132. James 1.19-20 says,

  133. Know this, my beloved brothers,

  134. let every person be quick to hear,

  135. slow to speak,

  136. slow to anger,

  137. for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

  138. And this is that term.

  139. This is what he's trying to communicate to us.

  140. That we ought not be people that smolder in this way.

  141. And all that it takes is somebody to give us a little fan

  142. and we burst into flame.

  143. That is what wrath means.

  144. The next thing that he warns us against.

  145. The next thing he tells us to put off.

  146. Wrath in the Greek is the sudden outburst of anger.

  147. It's that little handful of leaves you throw on the fire

  148. that bursts into flame immediately.

  149. Bursts up and then goes out.

  150. The two are very closely related.

  151. Anger and wrath.

  152. Anger lying below the surface.

  153. Wrath its vent.

  154. Thirdly, Paul tells us to put off malice.

  155. And this is just a general term

  156. for moral evil aimed at another person.

  157. Malice.

  158. Evil intent toward other people.

  159. In this context,

  160. it likely refers to harmful speech.

  161. Speech that's aimed at causing hurt to other people.

  162. And we can see the very next thing he tells us to put off

  163. as slander.

  164. It's the Greek word blasphemia,

  165. which we get our term blasphemy from.

  166. In relation to God,

  167. it's translated in our Scriptures as blasphemy.

  168. In relation to man,

  169. slander is the word that English translators have chosen to use.

  170. And hear this, beloved,

  171. to slander an individual created in the image of God

  172. is to blaspheme God,

  173. the one who created the individual.

  174. For blasphemy is to speak irreverently about God or sacred things,

  175. those things that he created,

  176. which are good and bear his image.

  177. James 3, again,

  178. James writing verses 9 and 10,

  179. speaking of our tongue,

  180. with it we bless our Lord and Father,

  181. and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.

  182. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

  183. My brothers,

  184. these things ought not be so.

  185. Paul goes on in his list,

  186. fifthly,

  187. to speak of obscene talk,

  188. which is foul-mouthed abuse of another person,

  189. which is in so many places expressly forbidden in the Scriptures.

  190. Ephesians 5.4

  191. As an example,

  192. let there be no filthiness,

  193. nor foolish talk,

  194. nor crude joking,

  195. which are out of place,

  196. but instead,

  197. let there be thanksgiving.

  198. Jesus warns us in Matthew 12.36,

  199. I tell you,

  200. on the day of judgment,

  201. people will give an account for every careless word they speak.

  202. And lastly in this list,

  203. Paul says to us we are to put off lying or deceit.

  204. He says do not lie to one another.

  205. Lying characterizes Satan.

  206. John 8.44

  207. Jesus speaking of Satan says

  208. he was a murderer from the beginning,

  209. and does not stand in the truth,

  210. because there is no truth in him.

  211. When he lies,

  212. he speaks out of his own character,

  213. for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  214. And just before this,

  215. he has accused the Pharisees of being of their father.

  216. If we are not of Satan,

  217. then we ought not lie to one another.

  218. Truth characterizes God.

  219. And as people of God,

  220. we should tell the truth.

  221. Titus 1.2

  222. Here Paul refers to God

  223. who never lies.

  224. And Paul gives us in our text,

  225. as he's telling us to put off these things,

  226. to put these sins to death in our lives,

  227. he gives us two reasons

  228. why we should do so.

  229. You'll find these in verse 6 and verse 7.

  230. Firstly, sin brings God's judgment.

  231. Sin brings God's judgment.

  232. Verse 6.

  233. Paul writes,

  234. On account of these,

  235. the wrath of God is coming.

  236. The wrath of God is coming

  237. because of these sins

  238. that should be put to death

  239. in the life of a believer.

  240. A.W. Pink described God's wrath

  241. and the attributes of God like this.

  242. His eternal detestation of all unrighteousness.

  243. It is the displeasure of God

  244. stirred into activity against sin.

  245. What a frightening thing.

  246. The unbeliever's life

  247. invites the wrath of God.

  248. The unbeliever stands in defiance of God.

  249. Shakes its fist at God

  250. and says,

  251. I hate you.

  252. It invites the wrath of God.

  253. Romans 2.5, Paul says,

  254. But because of your hard

  255. and impetent heart,

  256. you are storing up wrath for yourself

  257. on the day of wrath

  258. when God's righteous judgment

  259. will be revealed.

  260. This is the thing

  261. that those who are enemies of God

  262. deserve.

  263. That is,

  264. the wrath of God.

  265. Because of these sins,

  266. because of this offense

  267. to who God is,

  268. the way in which He's revealed Himself to us,

  269. and the way in which we ought to live

  270. to glorify Him,

  271. God's wrath is coming.

  272. Now, Paul is not warning believers

  273. that if we sin,

  274. we will feel the wrath of God.

  275. This is not what he's saying at all.

  276. Those of us who are found in Christ

  277. have had our sins struck clean.

  278. God has poured out His wrath

  279. justly to be fully just

  280. for our sin in Jesus Christ.

  281. This is why we need the perfect sacrifice of Jesus.

  282. That perfect life that He led.

  283. All of His stored up righteousness

  284. so that He could bear the eternal wrath

  285. that was due us on the cross.

  286. This is the glorious thing

  287. about the cross, beloved.

  288. That we are giving away to Jesus

  289. our sin

  290. and we are taking on His righteousness.

  291. So this is not what Paul is saying to us.

  292. Right?

  293. In 1 Thessalonians 1, 9 and 10,

  294. he says this,

  295. For they themselves report concerning us

  296. the kind of reception we had among you

  297. and how you turn to God from idols

  298. to serve the living and true God.

  299. So here's a report

  300. that these people have put aside idols

  301. and they now serve the true and living God.

  302. And then in verse 10 he says,

  303. And to wait for His Son from heaven

  304. whom He raised from the dead,

  305. Jesus,

  306. who delivers us from the wrath to come.

  307. So Paul's being consistent

  308. in his theology here.

  309. He's not saying that as believers

  310. we're going to incur wrath if we sin.

  311. Jesus has bore the wrath for those sins

  312. in His person on the cross.

  313. But rather, Paul is saying

  314. that those who profess faith in Jesus Christ

  315. who have been delivered from the wrath to come

  316. should want no part in the activity

  317. which calls down God's wrath.

  318. We should recognize the great thing

  319. that we've been delivered from.

  320. This sin that is such a deep offense to Him

  321. and He will one day punish and judge.

  322. We should now want nothing to do with it any longer.

  323. We should want to avoid altogether

  324. those things that incur God's wrath on the world.

  325. The children of God

  326. should not behave as the children of wrath.

  327. We should look differently.

  328. So Paul gives us these reasons.

  329. Firstly, that sin brings God's judgment.

  330. Secondly, that sin is part of a believer's past.

  331. Verse 7 says,

  332. in these you too once walked

  333. when you were living in them.

  334. When you were this pre-God honoring version of yourself,

  335. you walked in these things.

  336. This was who you were.

  337. But no longer.

  338. The last part of verse 9

  339. which I read to you earlier says,

  340. seeing that you have put off the old self

  341. with its practices

  342. because you have been delivered

  343. from the wrath to come

  344. because your heart has been changed.

  345. You've put these things away.

  346. You've put them off.

  347. Therefore, continue to do this very thing.

  348. You have changed positionally.

  349. Not in degree.

  350. You hear me say this all the time.

  351. We haven't gotten a little better

  352. when we place our faith in Jesus Christ.

  353. We have changed entirely.

  354. We were once children of wrath.

  355. We were once enemies of God.

  356. We once incurred His judgment.

  357. But now, if we've believed in Christ,

  358. we're different entirely.

  359. We're now children of God.

  360. We now incur His blessing

  361. instead of His wrath.

  362. This is part of our past.

  363. Verse 5 of chapter 3 in Colossians

  364. in the New American Standard Version,

  365. which just at times really edges out the ESV,

  366. which most of us use,

  367. says it this way,

  368. Therefore, consider the members

  369. of your earthly body as dead.

  370. Rather than saying,

  371. put to death therefore,

  372. NASB says,

  373. therefore, consider yourself already dead

  374. to these things.

  375. And this is the truth

  376. that Paul is trying to communicate to us.

  377. Because of who we are,

  378. we no longer live in such and such way.

  379. We have been saved.

  380. We have been set free from sin.

  381. It's an accomplished work done by Christ.

  382. We have had our image-bearing potential

  383. restored in us.

  384. Why would we ever go on sinning?

  385. Why do we proceed to do the very thing

  386. that we've been delivered from?

  387. We just so easily forget the Gospel,

  388. I think sometimes,

  389. that death was ours.

  390. It had already been purchased by our sin.

  391. eternal damnation.

  392. We've been delivered from this thing.

  393. Why would we go back and do it once again?

  394. 2 Corinthians 5.17,

  395. Paul says,

  396. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

  397. he is a new creation.

  398. The old has passed away.

  399. Behold, the new has come.

  400. Charles Spurgeon,

  401. in a book called Evening by Evening,

  402. wrote this.

  403. I want to do my best to read it well to you.

  404. Christian,

  405. what hast thou to do with sin?

  406. Hath it not cost thee enough already?

  407. Burnt child,

  408. wilt thou play with the fire?

  409. What,

  410. when thou hast already been

  411. between the jaws of the lion,

  412. wilt thou step a second time

  413. into his den?

  414. Hast thou not had enough

  415. of the old serpent?

  416. Did he not poison

  417. all thy veins at once?

  418. And wilt thou play upon

  419. the hole of the asp?

  420. And put thy hand

  421. upon the cockatrice's den

  422. a second time?

  423. A cockatrice is a mythical creature

  424. that's like a dragon

  425. with the head of a chicken.

  426. I had to look it up.

  427. I didn't just know that.

  428. Oh, be not so mad,

  429. so foolish.

  430. Did sin ever yield thee real pleasure?

  431. Didst thou find solid satisfaction in it?

  432. If so,

  433. go back to thine old drudgery

  434. and wear the chain again

  435. if it delight thee.

  436. But inasmuch as sin did never give thee

  437. what it promised to bestow,

  438. but deluded thee with lies,

  439. be not a second time

  440. snared by the old fowler.

  441. Be free,

  442. and let the remembrance

  443. of thy ancient bondage

  444. forbid thee to enter the net again.

  445. I hope his language

  446. sticks in your head

  447. as I try to read it to you.

  448. Sin was never good for us,

  449. and we know this to be true.

  450. Why do we once again

  451. return to it?

  452. So then,

  453. we're to put off the old self.

  454. We're to put to death

  455. what is earthly in us.

  456. We're to put them all away

  457. because we have put off the old self

  458. with its practices

  459. if we have faith in Christ.

  460. John Owen,

  461. the 17th century English pastor

  462. and theologian wrote

  463. of the mortification of sin

  464. and believers,

  465. which I would encourage you to read.

  466. And mortify means

  467. to subdue or to put to death.

  468. He says,

  469. Do you mortify?

  470. Do you make it your daily work?

  471. Be always at it whilst you live.

  472. Cease not a day from this work.

  473. Be killing sin,

  474. or it will be killing you.

  475. If you go on to read

  476. the rest of John Owen's writing,

  477. you'll know that he's not suggesting

  478. that if we're not actively

  479. putting to death sin,

  480. that that means that sin

  481. actually has some killing effect on us

  482. in an eternal way.

  483. What he means is that sin

  484. will be constantly making us miserable.

  485. It will be constantly like a dog

  486. going back to its vomit

  487. and getting sick over and over

  488. and over again.

  489. And we must engage in the work

  490. of mortifying our flesh,

  491. of putting to death sin.

  492. But how are we to do this?

  493. How are we to do this?

  494. We have answered what we are to put off,

  495. at least in some part,

  496. with some brief explanation.

  497. What we are to put off

  498. and why we are to do so.

  499. Does Paul tell us how

  500. here in the book of Colossians?

  501. He does,

  502. but we have to back up

  503. just a little bit.

  504. So back up, if you will,

  505. to Colossians 3, 1-4.

  506. John Hoffman did a good job

  507. of divulging to us last week.

  508. It says,

  509. If then,

  510. you have been raised with Christ,

  511. if you are found in Him,

  512. if you are a Christian,

  513. seek the things that are above,

  514. where Christ is,

  515. seated at the right hand of God.

  516. Set your minds on things

  517. that are above,

  518. not on things that are on earth.

  519. For you have died,

  520. and your life is hidden

  521. with Christ and God.

  522. When Christ who is your life appears,

  523. then you also will appear

  524. with Him in glory.

  525. And then the rest that follows,

  526. what we're into now,

  527. what we will be into

  528. until the end of the book,

  529. is a treatise on Paul's part

  530. on what that should look like.

  531. What is it supposed to look like

  532. if we set our minds

  533. on things that are above

  534. and not on things

  535. that are on earth?

  536. Now join me a little bit

  537. backing up just a bit more

  538. to Colossians 2-6.

  539. Paul here writes,

  540. Therefore,

  541. as you received Christ Jesus,

  542. the Lord,

  543. so walk in Him.

  544. What does he mean

  545. when he says,

  546. therefore?

  547. As they've received,

  548. because they've received,

  549. in this particular way,

  550. Christ Jesus,

  551. the Lord,

  552. so walk in Him.

  553. So, what does he mean by that?

  554. A few more verses.

  555. Back up.

  556. Chapter 2.

  557. Verses 2-3.

  558. Paul prays that the Colossian believers

  559. will reach all the riches

  560. of full assurance

  561. of understanding

  562. and the knowledge

  563. of God's mystery,

  564. which is Christ,

  565. in whom are hidden

  566. all the treasures

  567. of wisdom

  568. and knowledge.

  569. Verse 8.

  570. Chapter 2.

  571. Paul warns the Colossian believers

  572. not to be taken captive

  573. by philosophy

  574. and empty deceit.

  575. So, what he's saying

  576. is he says,

  577. therefore,

  578. verse 6,

  579. as you receive Christ Jesus,

  580. so walk in Him.

  581. He's saying,

  582. you have received Christ,

  583. the teaching of Jesus,

  584. and have settled convictions

  585. about His deity

  586. and His sufficiency,

  587. which is what he's been driving

  588. and teaching

  589. in the entire book so far,

  590. correcting some type of heresy

  591. that was happening

  592. in the church of Colossae.

  593. You have these settled convictions

  594. about His deity

  595. and His sufficiency.

  596. This is working

  597. our lives

  598. in good order.

  599. This is what's happening

  600. because of the things

  601. you believe,

  602. the way in which

  603. you've engaged your mind

  604. with who Jesus Christ is

  605. and what He's accomplished

  606. on your behalf.

  607. Don't stop.

  608. Continue to walk.

  609. Continue to do this thing

  610. referring to our daily conduct

  611. and all these things

  612. that He's listing off.

  613. Now, all of this

  614. putting off

  615. of these sins

  616. is a result of

  617. who we believe

  618. Jesus Christ is.

  619. Continue to believe

  620. the truth

  621. concerning Christ.

  622. Have an unwavering

  623. Christology.

  624. Believe that Jesus

  625. is the Christ.

  626. Let's back up even further

  627. in Colossians.

  628. It's going to drive the point

  629. which I haven't quite made yet,

  630. but I will.

  631. I promise.

  632. Chapter 1,

  633. verse 9 and 10.

  634. And so,

  635. from the day we heard,

  636. Lord, we have not ceased

  637. to pray for you,

  638. asking that you may be

  639. filled with the knowledge

  640. of His will

  641. in all spiritual wisdom

  642. and understanding,

  643. so as to walk

  644. in a manner worthy

  645. of the Lord,

  646. fully pleasing to Him,

  647. bearing fruit

  648. in every good work

  649. and increasing

  650. in the knowledge

  651. of God.

  652. Have you heard

  653. how many times now,

  654. just in the book

  655. of Colossians,

  656. Paul has talked about

  657. knowledge,

  658. understanding,

  659. and wisdom?

  660. Have you seen this?

  661. These are all activities

  662. of our minds.

  663. Beginning of chapter 3,

  664. set your minds

  665. on things

  666. that are above.

  667. There's far too much

  668. in American Christianity

  669. what's called mysticism.

  670. This divorce of our minds

  671. from our hearts.

  672. Lots of talk about feeling.

  673. And feelings are real.

  674. And we experience them.

  675. The book of Psalms

  676. is a book of feelings.

  677. But properly corralled

  678. by the mind.

  679. Read the book of Psalms

  680. from front to back.

  681. I challenge you to do so.

  682. And see the anguish

  683. and the joy

  684. and the bitterness.

  685. All of the emotion

  686. that runs through that book

  687. and see how it's corrected.

  688. By remembering

  689. who God is.

  690. The promises that He's made.

  691. The obedience

  692. that He's required of us.

  693. by taking the mind

  694. and filtering out

  695. the mess

  696. that our emotions

  697. can cause.

  698. We're often

  699. far too emotional.

  700. And hear me beloved,

  701. I know that if I err,

  702. I err on the side

  703. of ration.

  704. I just,

  705. ration isn't even a word,

  706. of being too rational.

  707. Right?

  708. I know that about myself.

  709. I know that that's my error.

  710. But too many people

  711. err in the opposite direction.

  712. Right?

  713. Directed by every little

  714. feeling that they have.

  715. As if the Lord

  716. is confusing to us.

  717. As if He hasn't

  718. written us a book

  719. that tells us

  720. exactly who He is

  721. and exactly how

  722. we're meant to live

  723. to please Him.

  724. That's why this exists.

  725. You know that the word

  726. Bible

  727. is simply a word

  728. that means

  729. any work

  730. that is the authority

  731. on a particular subject.

  732. So,

  733. growing up,

  734. I used to have,

  735. I've been a rock climber

  736. for a bunch of years,

  737. a book called

  738. The Climber's Bible.

  739. And I always felt

  740. a little sacrilegious

  741. having it.

  742. But it was

  743. the definitive source.

  744. It had a lot of

  745. fantastic information in it

  746. and I came to find out

  747. that that was a perfectly

  748. acceptable title

  749. for it.

  750. That's why

  751. this book

  752. is most often called

  753. The Holy Bible.

  754. Because it's the

  755. source,

  756. the direction,

  757. the instruction

  758. sufficient for

  759. holy living.

  760. It tells us about

  761. our holy God

  762. and how we're meant

  763. to live

  764. in light

  765. of His holiness.

  766. So our minds

  767. are so key

  768. to this very thing.

  769. And you're seeing

  770. this pattern emerge,

  771. I hope.

  772. Beloved,

  773. theology is not

  774. just for the high-minded.

  775. It's not just

  776. for the high-minded.

  777. The reason I did

  778. the Tyndale story,

  779. which I think the kids

  780. totally lost the point of,

  781. but just the same,

  782. is that he saw this

  783. to be true.

  784. At the great risk

  785. of his life,

  786. he knew that the people

  787. needed the Word of God

  788. in their hands.

  789. That the Word of God

  790. was not just for

  791. the high-minded,

  792. those who could speak

  793. Latin.

  794. It is for the Christian

  795. to learn about God

  796. and to understand Him

  797. and His requirements

  798. for us.

  799. Every Christian doctrine,

  800. every one of them,

  801. every truth contained

  802. within the Scriptures,

  803. rightly understood

  804. and exercised,

  805. gives way to proper living.

  806. There's a whole category

  807. of Christian study

  808. called practical theology,

  809. which I just find

  810. so frustrating

  811. because all theology

  812. is practical.

  813. If you're learning

  814. about things

  815. that are highly philosophical

  816. and have no real point

  817. in bearing in today

  818. or tomorrow

  819. or the next,

  820. then why are you studying it?

  821. What a waste of time.

  822. All theology

  823. is practical

  824. and important

  825. and all of us

  826. are meant to be

  827. about the work

  828. of doing theology,

  829. understanding God,

  830. getting it.

  831. That's why I say to you,

  832. this is the Word of God

  833. written for us,

  834. right?

  835. That we can understand

  836. this thing

  837. by the illumination

  838. of the Spirit

  839. that we might rightly apply it.

  840. We can believe

  841. its promises,

  842. obey its commands.

  843. It's good for us

  844. to do so.

  845. God wrote us a book

  846. to help us with this.

  847. Condescended.

  848. Came down off a throne

  849. to the minds of men

  850. to write a book for us,

  851. beloved.

  852. We should know

  853. this book.

  854. Charles Spurgeon said,

  855. good works

  856. are not the root of faith,

  857. but they are its fruit.

  858. And faith is not blind.

  859. It is if it's not saving faith,

  860. right?

  861. If it's blind faith,

  862. if it's Indiana Jones

  863. stepping into the gap

  864. not knowing what's going

  865. to catch in faith,

  866. then it's not saving faith.

  867. For the object of our faith

  868. is of the utmost importance.

  869. What we believe in

  870. matters massively.

  871. And the evidence

  872. of that faith

  873. should always be

  874. carefully measured

  875. and tested.

  876. It's of eternal weight,

  877. beloved,

  878. that you say

  879. that you're a believer

  880. to constantly check

  881. and say,

  882. does my life

  883. give the evidence

  884. of that?

  885. I am an apple tree.

  886. I should produce apples.

  887. I should be checking

  888. for that kind of thing.

  889. Again,

  890. in the book of James.

  891. I want you to turn here

  892. with me.

  893. James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  894. Speaking about works

  895. as evidence

  896. of our salvation

  897. does not negate

  898. that our salvation

  899. comes by faith alone.

  900. And we are justified

  901. by our faith.

  902. And I'm always so scared

  903. to make you think

  904. that works are

  905. the salvific thing.

  906. They're not.

  907. As Charles Bergen said,

  908. I just read it to you,

  909. good works

  910. are not the root of faith,

  911. but they are its fruit.

  912. And James says that

  913. very well here.

  914. Of interesting historical note,

  915. Martin Luther did not want

  916. the book of James

  917. to be canonized.

  918. You know that?

  919. Because he was so fighting

  920. this battle

  921. with the Catholic Church

  922. against justification

  923. by works

  924. and he thought

  925. it was too easy

  926. to understand James' writing

  927. to be saying that.

  928. But follow it along with me

  929. beginning in verse 14

  930. of James 2.

  931. What good is it,

  932. my brothers,

  933. if someone says

  934. he has faith

  935. but does not have works?

  936. Someone just says,

  937. I'm a Christian,

  938. but there's no real evidence

  939. in their lives.

  940. Can that faith save him?

  941. If a brother or sister

  942. is poorly clothed

  943. and lacking in daily food

  944. and one of you says to them,

  945. go in peace,

  946. be warmed and filled

  947. without giving them

  948. the things needed

  949. for the body,

  950. what good is that?

  951. Just saying it

  952. doesn't mean anything

  953. for those people.

  954. So also,

  955. faith by itself,

  956. if it does not have works,

  957. is dead.

  958. It's non-existent.

  959. But someone will say,

  960. you have faith

  961. and I have works.

  962. Show me your faith

  963. apart from your works

  964. and I will show you

  965. my faith by my works.

  966. And I will show you

  967. that I believe

  968. that Jesus is the Christ

  969. because I live

  970. as Jesus is the Christ.

  971. You believe that God

  972. is one,

  973. you do well.

  974. Even the demons believe

  975. and shudder.

  976. Do you want to be shown,

  977. you foolish person,

  978. that faith apart from works

  979. is useless?

  980. And then as all good preachers do,

  981. he begins to access

  982. the Scriptures.

  983. Verse 21,

  984. Was not Abraham our father

  985. justified by works

  986. when he offered up

  987. his son Isaac on the altar?

  988. You see,

  989. that faith was active

  990. along with his works

  991. and faith was completed

  992. by his works.

  993. And the Scripture

  994. was fulfilled

  995. that says,

  996. Abraham believed

  997. and it was counted to him

  998. as righteousness.

  999. And he was called

  1000. a friend of God.

1001. The evidence of his faith,

  1002. he believed God

  1003. and in so doing,

  1004. almost sacrificed

  1005. his son.

  1006. Verse 24,

1007. You see that a person

  1008. is justified by works

1009. and not by faith alone.

1010. And in the same way

  1011. was not also Rahab,

  1012. the prostitute,

  1013. justified by works

  1014. when she received

  1015. the messengers

  1016. and sent them out

  1017. by another way?

  1018. For as the body

  1019. apart from the Spirit

  1020. is dead,

  1021. so also faith

  1022. apart from works

  1023. is dead.

  1024. So you're tracking

  1025. what he's saying here.

  1026. Right?

  1027. That the works themselves

  1028. give evidence

  1029. to the faith

  1030. that does save us.

1031. We must be so careful

  1032. at this point.

1033. We must be so careful

  1034. to see

  1035. that the faith

  1036. produces the works.

1037. We're told in the Scriptures

  1038. to test ourselves.

1039. We're told in the Scriptures

  1040. to be careful

  1041. lest we're led astray.

1042. And we live in a culture

  1043. of easy-believe-ism

  1044. that makes the Gospel

  1045. just so simple.

  1046. Right?

  1047. It's about an activity.

1048. It's about walking an aisle.

  1049. It's about repeating a prayer.

  1050. This simple little

  1051. formulaic thing.

  1052. It's about making sure

  1053. that you go on

  1054. at least a summer

  1055. mission trip a year.

  1056. You'll feel so good

  1057. about yourself

1058. on your way to hell

1059. if this is what you base

  1060. your salvation in.

  1061. We're justified by faith

  1062. and it yields results.

1063. We will be about the work,

  1064. the continuing work

1065. to the day we die

1066. of constantly putting to death

  1067. sin in our lives.

  1068. Be killing sin

  1069. in your life.

1070. Let me show you again

  1071. another place.

  1072. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1073. So we have to be careful.

1074. We have to engage our minds.

1075. We have to see the commands

1076. given to us in the Scriptures.

  1077. Like, am I walking

1078. in the way of God?

1079. Do I believe the truth?

  1080. And therefore,

1081. it's evidenced in my life.

1082. Am I engaging my mind

  1083. around that?

  1084. I hope you're seeing

  1085. the need for that.

1086. Just in case you're not,

  1087. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:1–11

  1088. verses 1-11.

  1089. Listen to the language.

  1090. There is therefore now

  1091. no condemnation

  1092. for those who are

  1093. in Christ Jesus.

1094. We have been set free

  1095. from the just punishment

  1096. of sin.

  1097. No condemnation

  1098. for those who are

  1099. in Christ Jesus.

1100. For the law of the Spirit

1101. of life has set you free

  1102. in Christ Jesus

  1103. from the law

  1104. of sin and death.

  1105. For God has done

  1106. what the law

  1107. weakened by the flesh

  1108. could not do

1109. by sending his own Son

  1110. in the likeness

  1111. of sinful flesh

  1112. and for sin

  1113. he condemned sin

  1114. in the flesh

  1115. in order that

  1116. the righteous requirement

  1117. of the law

1118. might be fulfilled in us

  1119. who walk not according

  1120. to the flesh

1121. but according to the Spirit.

  1122. Okay.

  1123. Right?

  1124. Sent his Son

  1125. who lived a perfect

  1126. righteous life

  1127. he punished sin

  1128. in him.

  1129. Right?

  1130. So that we

  1131. by faith in Christ

  1132. can fulfill

1133. the requirement of the law.

  1134. Right?

  1135. Because Jesus was righteous

  1136. and he gave us

  1137. his righteousness.

  1138. Verse 5

  1139. For those who live

  1140. according to the flesh

  1141. set their minds

  1142. on the things

  1143. of the flesh

  1144. but those who live

  1145. according to the Spirit

  1146. set their minds

  1147. on the things

  1148. of the Spirit

1149. for to set the mind

  1150. on the flesh

  1151. is death

1152. but to set the mind

  1153. on the Spirit

  1154. is life

  1155. and peace

  1156. for the mind

  1157. that is set

  1158. on the flesh

  1159. is hostile

  1160. toward God

  1161. for it does not

  1162. submit to God's law

  1163. indeed

  1164. it cannot.

  1165. Those who are

  1166. in the flesh

  1167. cannot

  1168. please God.

1169. So you start to get this

  1170. it's like understanding

  1171. we're just taught

  1172. this one scripture

  1173. we're supposed to walk

  1174. by the Spirit

1175. in order to put off

  1176. these things

  1177. to put to death

  1178. sin in us

  1179. to put off

  1180. these desires

  1181. of the flesh

  1182. for to walk

  1183. in the Spirit

1184. how do you do that?

  1185. Hold hands

  1186. with the Spirit

1187. what does that look like?

1188. And a lot of people

  1189. have resorted

  1190. to this idea

  1191. of feeling

  1192. I feel this way

  1193. I'm compulsed

1194. one way or the other

  1195. by this Spirit

  1196. that lives within me

  1197. but Paul has driven

  1198. the point

  1199. that we're to set

  1200. our minds

  1201. on the things

  1202. of the Spirit

  1203. which are

  1204. the Word of God

  1205. those things revealed

  1206. by the Spirit

  1207. verse 9

  1208. you however

1209. are not in the flesh

  1210. but in the Spirit

  1211. if in fact

  1212. the Spirit of God

  1213. dwells in you

  1214. anyone who does not

1215. have the Spirit of Christ

  1216. does not belong

  1217. to him

1218. but if Christ is in you

  1219. although the body

1220. is dead because of sin

  1221. the Spirit is life

  1222. because of righteousness

1223. if the Spirit of him

  1224. who raised Jesus

  1225. from the dead

  1226. dwells in you

  1227. he who raised

  1228. Christ Jesus

  1229. from the dead

  1230. will also give life

  1231. to your mortal bodies

  1232. through his Spirit

  1233. who dwells in you

  1234. how?

  1235. through the working

  1236. of our minds

  1237. beloved

  1238. understand

  1239. the truth

  1240. and live

  1241. in accordance

  1242. with it

1243. you ready for another one?

  1244. Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1245. I've only got

  1246. three more

  1247. they're really short

  1248. I'm laughing

  1249. because they're really short

  1250. I know it's getting late

1251. and it's getting hot in here

  1252. Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1253. beginning in verse 4

1254. rejoice in the Lord always

  1255. again I will say

  1256. rejoice

1257. what do we rejoice in?

  1258. the truth of God

  1259. let your reasonableness

  1260. be known to everyone

  1261. your reasonableness

  1262. with your mind

1263. the Lord is at hand

  1264. there are whole denominations

  1265. that are extremely unreasonable

1266. have you met some of these people?

1267. they don't even make sense

1268. their minds aren't engaged at all

1269. on the things of God

1270. the Lord is at hand

1271. do not be anxious about anything

  1272. but in everything

  1273. by prayer and supplication

  1274. with thanksgiving

  1275. let your requests

1276. be made known to God

1277. and the peace of God

  1278. which surpasses all understanding

  1279. will guard your hearts

  1280. and your minds

  1281. in Christ Jesus

1282. and I think that we're really familiar

  1283. with those verses

  1284. and I think we're really familiar

  1285. with verse 8

1286. but often apart from one another

1287. so what does Paul go on to say?

  1288. finally brothers

  1289. whatever is true

  1290. whatever is honorable

  1291. whatever is just

  1292. whatever is pure

  1293. whatever is lovely

  1294. whatever is commendable

1295. if there is any excellence

  1296. if there is anything

  1297. worthy of praise

  1298. think about these things

  1299. meditate on these things

1300. and you will put to death

1301. the deeds of the flesh

  1302. another example

1303. you don't have to turn

1304. first part of Romans 12

  1305. 2

  1306. do not be conformed

  1307. to this world

  1308. but be transformed

  1309. by the renewal

  1310. of your mind

  1311. and then finally

  1312. back in Colossians

  1313. verse 16

  1314. the beginning part

  1315. says

  1316. let the word

  1317. of Christ

  1318. dwell

  1319. in you richly

  1320. you see

  1321. the thread

  1322. you see the pattern

  1323. through

  1324. and the reason

  1325. that I jumped you

  1326. to different places

  1327. is because I don't want you

  1328. to think

  1329. that this is just

  1330. found here

  1331. but it's found

  1332. across

  1333. the scriptures

  1334. the inspired

  1335. word of God

  1336. not just with Paul

  1337. but with others

  1338. as well

  1339. so we must

  1340. put to death

1341. the sin in our lives

  1342. because it is not

  1343. fitting that those

  1344. who have been

  1345. delivered from sin

  1346. should go on sinning

  1347. and we do so

  1348. by the power

1349. of the spirit of God

  1350. in the renewal

  1351. of our minds

  1352. this is the way

  1353. this comes

  1354. to pass

  1355. and to make our

  1356. theology

  1357. practical

1358. how do we put to death

1359. the deeds of the flesh

1360. we get in our Bibles

  1361. and we study them

  1362. and we meditate

  1363. upon them

  1364. we allow it to

  1365. influence and affect

  1366. every part

  1367. of our thinking

  1368. we allow it to

  1369. cause us

  1370. as Christian people

  1371. to stand firm

  1372. in the midst

  1373. of ways

  1374. we

  1375. so know it

  1376. that we can

  1377. contend

  1378. for the truth

  1379. and that has

  1380. meaning for us

  1381. as individuals

  1382. as well

  1383. I have to contend

  1384. for the truth

  1385. in my own life

  1386. all the time

  1387. my sin

  1388. is always

  1389. deceiving me

  1390. my emotions

  1391. betray me

  1392. constantly

  1393. I have to

  1394. preach to myself

  1395. the truth

  1396. of God

  1397. we have to

  1398. preach the truth

  1399. to one another

  1400. I don't need

  1401. your counsel

  1402. if it's not

  1403. biblical counsel

  1404. you tell me

  1405. what the scriptures

  1406. say

  1407. I want that

  1408. I'm hungry

  1409. for that

  1410. when I'm dealing

  1411. with the problems

  1412. of life

  1413. I want you to

  1414. tell me

  1415. what almighty

  1416. God says

  1417. in his

  1418. inerrant

  1419. sufficient scripture

  1420. concerning the

  1421. matter

  1422. it has

  1423. everything in it

  1424. that we need

  1425. to hear

  1426. and know

  1427. for our

  1428. well being

  1429. if you just

  1430. got some

  1431. trite piece

  1432. of advice

  1433. just keep

  1434. your mouth

  1435. shut

  1436. I want to

  1437. know what

  1438. the scriptures

  1439. say

  1440. you have to

  1441. learn the

  1442. scriptures

  1443. to be able

  1444. to do that

  1445. and be able

  1446. to stand

  1447. firm

  1448. and to put

  1449. off

  1450. these types

  1451. of deeds

  1452. and beloved

  1453. it should be

  1454. our great

  1455. desire to

  1456. do so

  1457. because we

  1458. have a great

  1459. deliverer

  1460. that we

  1461. should want

  1462. to exalt

  1463. in the way

  1464. that we

  1465. live

  1466. let's pray

  1467. together

  1468. let's종
