  1. Please turn with me, if you're not already there, to Paul's letter to the church at Colossae, chapter 3.

  2. Let's see.

  3. Their first day of classes is August 17th, which means we'll likely see a lot of that crew come back on the 16th and the week following.

  4. So I had every intention of wrapping it up.

  5. In fact, originally verses 5 through 17, I had intended to preach in just two weeks.

  6. So this is now week 3, and obviously next week, Lord willing, will be week 4, and then we'll move on into verse 18 beyond that.

  7. Not the best laid plans of mice and men.

  8. This morning for two reasons.

  9. I think it's right and proper to just address verses 12, 13, and 14.

  10. The first of which being, I am sick and tired, but not in a literal, excuse me, not in a metaphorical sense, but in a literal sense.

  11. My little one, three years old, has a head cold, and I think it's coming on me now.

  12. I woke up this morning feeling quite under the weather.

  13. And we're wrapping up the wedding season.

  14. Officiated my fourth wedding since May yesterday.

  15. I finished premarital counseling for six couples just this past week.

  16. And I'm beat.

  17. Weddings are fantastic.

  18. They are great and glorious and enjoyable, but they are also exhausting.

  19. So I am sick and tired, literally, this morning.

  20. Secondly, there is a lot to consider in these texts.

  21. Certainly, thematically, they hold together.

  22. We can see verses 5-11 being this expression of those things that we should be putting off our old self.

  23. These activities that shouldn't exist amongst those who claim the name of Christ.

  24. In verses 12-17, those things that we put on, that we exchange instead.

  25. So thematically, they hold really well.

  26. And we can see the primary exhortation of the text in the last part of verse 9 and the first part of verse 10.

  27. Where Paul says,

  28. It's seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self.

  29. Previously in 3-3, he says,

  30. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  31. We have been made new in Christ.

  32. And so it's proper that we put off the old self.

  33. It's stated in the negative.

  34. Stop doing these things.

  35. That we put on.

  36. We clothe ourselves differently now.

  37. Stated in the positive.

  38. Rather, we ought to live this way.

  39. Sort of put off the old self.

  40. Verse 5,

  41. Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you.

  42. Here, not literally.

  43. Which is where I looked in my notes when I said not literally earlier.

  44. Not literally, but figuratively.

  45. Mortify sin in your life.

  46. And verse 8,

  47. But now you must put them all away.

  48. And Paul gives us these two lists,

  49. which are not exhaustive lists of all sin,

  50. but they're sins that relate to how we deal with one another.

  51. They're sins of unrighteous love and sins of unrighteous hate.

  52. Stop functioning together in this way,

  53. but rather put on the new self.

  54. Verse 10,

  55. And have put on the new self,

  56. which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

  57. I made the case to you last week that our sanctification,

  58. our perfection in Christ is a progressive process.

  59. It's something that's being accomplished in us.

  60. That we have been made new and that we are being made new.

  61. So as we look at these kinds of exhortations in the Scripture,

  62. if we're really honest with ourselves,

  63. none of us live to this standard,

  64. but yet we should.

  65. Don't deny the fact, the reality,

  66. that in Christ we ought to live this way,

  67. but we recognize that we are being,

  68. by one degree after another,

  69. being made into this image.

  70. We rightly see these things and recognize what righteous looks like.

  71. The right way in which we ought to live in Christ.

  72. And we recognize rightly then,

  73. sin.

  74. You see that in verse 10,

  75. he says that we have put on the new self.

  76. This is a snapshot of a completed event.

  77. It's the aorist verb tense.

  78. This is what it means.

  79. It's been accomplished.

  80. And then just beyond this,

  81. he says,

  82. which is being renewed.

  83. And it's being renewed in this way,

  84. by the power of the Spirit,

  85. in knowledge.

  86. That we know how it is we ought to live.

  87. That we meditate on that.

  88. That we function out of the realities

  89. of who God is to us in Christ

  90. in order to accomplish these things.

  91. And we're being made into the image of its,

  92. and they're referring to the new self creator.

  93. We're being made into the image of Jesus Christ.

  94. I was thinking a little bit about that today

  95. and what that looks like in our lives.

  96. And it caused my mind to think about

  97. when you have a brand new baby,

  98. and so many people,

  99. particularly women,

  100. try to figure out who that baby looks like.

  101. I've heard this.

  102. I know, oh, he looks so much like.

  103. Babies don't really typically look like anybody.

  104. They look like themselves.

  105. And I don't understand

  106. how my boys look so much like.

  107. Maybe that's insulting.

  108. I don't know.

  109. Maybe it's a compliment.

  110. Babies are awfully cute.

  111. I'm not sure.

  112. Sometimes a baby really looks like

  113. their father or mother,

  114. but in most cases,

  115. they really don't.

  116. But as they grow,

  117. and as they get older,

  118. they do begin to take on

  119. more and more of those features.

  120. A wonderful example

  121. for my five-year-old Cade

  122. is that he sadly, unfortunately,

  123. inherited my double crown,

  124. the two cowl.

  125. I don't know if you've ever noticed

  126. this about myself.

  127. But it's horrible,

  128. and it's really hard to comb your hair

  129. when your hair's doing that in the back,

  130. and the poor boy's hair does the same.

  131. But when he was born,

  132. he had this cute little fuzzy head.

  133. Right?

  134. We're to look more and more like Christ,

  135. although it's a positive in this case,

  136. and Cade and mine,

  137. it's a negative thing,

  138. but we're to look more like Jesus

  139. by degree after degree after degree.

  140. This is the work of the Christian life

  141. and the way in which the Spirit works in us.

  142. And he begins to talk about this new self

  143. and the way in which we will be changed

  144. in what seems like such a peculiar way

  145. in verse 11.

  146. He says,

  147. here in this new self,

  148. there is not Greek and Jew,

  149. circumcised, uncircumcised,

  150. barbarian, Scythian, slave-free,

  151. but Christ is all and in all.

  152. And in this culture of this day,

  153. there were so many barriers,

  154. just like there are today.

  155. Maybe even more strictly drawn up in theirs.

  156. There were ethnic barriers

  157. between the Greeks and the Jews.

  158. Religious barriers between those

  159. who were circumcised and uncircumcised.

  160. And I mean by religious,

  161. the outward trappings of religion,

  162. not the true devotion to God.

  163. There were cultural barriers

  164. between the barbarians,

  165. the Scythians,

  166. and those who were educated.

  167. Social barriers between slave and free.

  168. And what Paul is saying is that

  169. for those who have placed their faith

  170. in Jesus Christ,

  171. Christ should be everything.

  172. Christ is all.

  173. It's a reality that we should function out of.

  174. And He's in all.

  175. So we have this wonderful commonality

  176. between us.

  177. Apart from our backgrounds,

  178. apart from our ethnicity,

  179. apart from the culture that we grew up in,

  180. we have a wonderful, wonderful commonality

  181. in Christ.

  182. And so today,

  183. our verses will be

  184. verses 12 through 14.

  185. And I want to read those to us

  186. just again to get them on our minds,

  187. if only for my benefit.

  188. Paul writes,

  189. Put on then,

  190. as God's chosen ones,

  191. holy and beloved,

  192. compassionate hearts,

  193. kindness,

  194. humility,

  195. meekness,

  196. and patience,

  197. bearing with one another,

  198. and if one has a complaint against another,

  199. forgiving each other

  200. as the Lord has forgiven you,

  201. so you also must forgive.

  202. And above all these,

  203. put on love,

  204. which binds everything together

  205. in perfect harmony.

  206. And let me remind you

  207. that this is God's Word to us.

  208. It has bearing and meaning on our day.

  209. It's written for His glory

  210. and for our good

  211. and that we would all do well

  212. to listen to it

  213. in order to believe its promises

  214. and obey its commands.

  215. I, and I hope you appreciate

  216. and join with me in this,

  217. I am so thankful

  218. for the Word of God.

  219. This past week,

  220. on our family day,

  221. which is on Tuesday,

  222. I was playing with Judah,

  223. our three-year-old,

  224. in the woods,

  225. and we found a millipede,

  226. those big, fat millipedes.

  227. They're kind of gray

  228. and they've got cool red lines on them.

  229. And I've touched them before,

  230. but I've never like agitated

  231. one of them.

  232. But this one kept trying

  233. to go into the leaves

  234. and I wanted Judah to see it,

  235. so I kept pulling it back

  236. out of the leaves.

  237. Don't agitate a millipede

  238. because it secreted

  239. this yellow gunk

  240. all over my thumb

  241. and my pointer finger

  242. on this hand,

  243. which just smelled horrible.

  244. It had a very thick ammonia

  245. kind of a smell to it,

  246. like burned my nose

  247. when I smelled it.

  248. And shortly after,

  249. I washed my hands,

  250. but shortly after,

  251. it turned my finger

  252. and my thumb maroon.

  253. And I showed it to Sam

  254. and she was very concerned,

  255. like, is it hurt?

  256. Like, what's going on

  257. with your finger?

  258. And I just really wasn't sure.

  259. Didn't seem to be any real issue.

  260. I don't know if anybody,

  261. you can't see my thumb from there.

  262. Maybe some of you

  263. on the front row.

  264. I still have some maroon

  265. under my thumbnail

  266. from this goo

  267. that was on my finger.

  268. And this world,

  269. the temporal part of our world,

  270. doesn't really come

  271. with a manual, does it?

  272. Certainly if I had

  273. done a quick Google search,

  274. I would have found out

  275. I shouldn't touch the millipede.

  276. But these things

  277. that have temporal bearing

  278. and temporal nature,

  279. there's not really a book

  280. that we can be handed

  281. that tells us

  282. how we ought to live

  283. in relation to the world

  284. in those temporal ways,

  285. but we have been given a book

  286. that tells us

  287. how we ought to live spiritually.

  288. In those things

  289. that have eternal weight

  290. and matter,

  291. what a precious,

  292. precious thing this is.

  293. That if we are to be renewed

  294. degree by degree

  295. to look more like Christ,

  296. that this is the great call

  297. on the Christian life

  298. for the sake of His name,

  299. we've been given a book.

  300. It shows us how

  301. we ought to do it

  302. and we ought to treasure it

  303. much more than we do.

  304. Main point for today,

  305. there's only one,

  306. and that is

  307. Christian people

  308. will be distinguished

  309. by the way they live

  310. in relation to one another.

  311. Christian people

  312. will be distinguished.

  313. We will look different

  314. by the way we live

  315. in relation to one another.

  316. If the affection of your heart

  317. says Christ is all,

  318. and oh, I hope that it does.

  319. I hope that is the cry

  320. and the longing of your heart.

  321. Christ is all.

  322. Christ is everything to me.

  323. Then you will live differently

  324. as you relate to other people

  325. who say the very same thing.

  326. Remember what Paul is saying here.

  327. He's saying in relation

  328. to one another,

  329. we're to put to death

  330. those things

  331. that cause enmity between us

  332. and we're instead

  333. meant to live in this way.

  334. All of those barriers,

  335. all of those cultural,

  336. social, ethnic barriers

  337. have been torn down in Christ.

  338. So live like this.

  339. And he begins by rooting that

  340. in our very character,

  341. who we are now as God's people.

  342. Verse 12, he says,

  343. put on then,

  344. put on then,

  345. as God's chosen ones,

  346. holy and beloved.

  347. In Christ, we are holy.

  348. Right?

  349. That's that completed act.

  350. We have been made perfect in Christ.

  351. When God looks at us,

  352. He sees Jesus.

  353. We have been given,

  354. we've been imputed

  355. Jesus Christ's righteousness.

  356. Right?

  357. So we should continue in that.

  358. We should stand in that.

  359. This is our status in God.

  360. We are beloved.

  361. We are loved by Him.

  362. And we are chosen in Him.

  363. This speaks of who we are.

  364. Not differing in degree,

  365. but in type.

  366. It speaks of who we are,

  367. but more importantly,

  368. it reminds us of who made us

  369. who we are.

  370. See that we are chosen ones

  371. and we're holy and beloved,

  372. but so importantly,

  373. we are God's chosen ones.

  374. Holy and beloved.

  375. If you are in Christ,

  376. if you have placed faith in Him,

  377. this is a great work of God Almighty.

  378. He has birthed this in you.

  379. He has caused you to believe

  380. in Jesus Christ's person and His work.

  381. It is His doing,

  382. and therefore,

  383. the completion of what He intends

  384. to accomplish with you

  385. is sure.

  386. What a precious promise

  387. is found in this little phrase,

  388. God's chosen ones.

  389. Holy and beloved.

  390. Turn with me, if you will,

  391. to 1 John 2.

  392. See a bit of a parallel text here

  393. that drives the point

  394. that because of now who we are,

  395. we will live in a particular way.

  396. Our obedience is a response

  397. to the grace of God in Christ

  398. on our behalf.

  399. 1 John 2.

  400. And I'm going to begin reading in verse 28.

  401. And now, little children,

  402. abide in Him,

  403. so that when He appears,

  404. we may have confidence

  405. and not shrink from Him

  406. in shame at His coming.

  407. If you know that He is righteous,

  408. there's His work,

  409. you may be sure that everyone

  410. who practices righteousness

  411. has been born of Him.

  412. See what kind of love

  413. the Father has given to us,

  414. that we should be called

  415. children of God,

  416. and so we are.

  417. The reason why the world

  418. does not know us

  419. is that it did not know Him.

  420. Beloved, we are God's children now.

  421. So there's this status change for us.

  422. Enemies of God,

  423. now children of God.

  424. John goes on to write

  425. in verse 9 and 10,

  426. No one born of God

  427. makes a practice of sinning,

  428. for God's seed abides in Him,

  429. and He cannot keep on sinning,

  430. because He has been born of God.

  431. By this it is evident

  432. who are the children of God

  433. and who are the children of the devil.

  434. Whoever does not practice righteousness

  435. is not of God,

  436. nor is the one

  437. who does not love

  438. his brother.

  439. So you see that there's this status change,

  440. and it causes us to live

  441. in a different way.

  442. And if we don't,

  443. if we're not about the practice

  444. of righteousness,

  445. but we're instead about

  446. the practice of sinning,

  447. it's indicative of who we are.

  448. Pears don't grow on apple trees.

  449. Only apples grow on apple trees.

  450. And as such,

  451. when we've had this status change,

  452. sin is part of a believer's past.

  453. Verse 7 of chapter 3 in Colossians,

  454. In these,

  455. you too once walked

  456. when you were living in them.

  457. The last part of verse 9,

  458. Seeing that you have put off

  459. the old self

  460. with its practices.

  461. It's once who we were,

  462. but it is no longer

  463. who we are

  464. if we have placed faith

  465. in Christ.

  466. And Paul is driving this point

  467. that this has to do with

  468. how we relate

  469. to one another.

  470. And beloved,

  471. we don't do this well.

  472. There are so many things

  473. about our church

  474. that are healthy,

  475. and we probably do this

  476. better than many.

  477. But you need to hear

  478. what Paul is trying

  479. to communicate

  480. about the way in which

  481. we should relate

  482. to one another.

  483. And I think one of the great

  484. cultural challenges to this

  485. is that so many of us

  486. think of the church

  487. as something that is

  488. outside of us.

  489. It is an institution.

  490. It is a thing that we attend

  491. rather than who we are.

  492. If you are in Christ,

  493. you are the church.

  494. We go on existing

  495. apart from this piece of property

  496. and from this building,

  497. praise God.

  498. We continue to exist

  499. without a name

  500. or a website

  501. or any contact info whatsoever.

  502. The church is us.

  503. It is people.

  504. If you have a favorite restaurant,

  505. I would not expect you

  506. to know everybody

  507. who works at that restaurant.

  508. I wouldn't expect you

  509. to know the owner.

  510. It doesn't really matter

  511. if you know the owner or not,

  512. if you enjoy the food.

  513. You don't have to know

  514. the chef who cooks

  515. the food for you.

  516. You never relate

  517. to the other patrons.

  518. You don't come in and go,

  519. isn't this the best restaurant ever?

  520. You go in,

  521. you enjoy the company

  522. that came with you,

  523. you get up,

  524. and you leave,

  525. and that is fine

  526. and acceptable.

  527. Sam and I went to a restaurant

  528. down in Gwinnett

  529. close to a large building

  530. where a congregation meets.

  531. And we ran into

  532. while we were eating,

  533. there were so many people

  534. that we knew from our past.

  535. Like I ran into my health teacher

  536. from the seventh grade.

  537. We're just running into people we knew.

  538. It was the weirdest evening.

  539. And most of them,

  540. Sam would ask,

  541. where are you attending church now?

  542. Who are you fellowshipping?

  543. And they all had the same answer.

  544. But as we watched them

  545. go to eat their meals,

  546. none interacted with one another.

  547. All of them professed to be

  548. part of a fellowship

  549. of Jesus Christ together

  550. and yet had no relationship.

  551. None whatsoever.

  552. Or they all hated each other

  553. or were ignoring each other.

  554. One of the two.

  555. Both sin.

  556. This shouldn't be so amongst us.

  557. I will fight and fight

  558. and fight and fight

  559. for that not to be the case

  560. amongst us.

  561. We are the church

  562. and we're meant to live

  563. in a very particular way

  564. with one another.

  565. And this is God's design

  566. for the advancement of His gospel.

  567. This is a primary way

  568. in which His glory is proclaimed

  569. in this world.

  570. The way we relate

  571. to one another.

  572. Look at some of the things

  573. that He says.

  574. And I'm not going to develop

  575. all of these out.

  576. Each of these could be

  577. a week of a sermon.

  578. But look what He says

  579. that we're meant to be doing together.

  580. The things we're meant to put on

  581. as God's chosen ones.

  582. His holy and His beloved.

  583. Compassionate hearts.

  584. Compassionate hearts.

  585. Love characterized by mercy.

  586. That looks at an individual

  587. and your heart breaks

  588. for them

  589. and the situation

  590. that they're in.

  591. And every single one of us

  592. has something happening

  593. in our lives

  594. that should be causing

  595. heartbreak

  596. in the life of somebody else.

  597. We're all hurting.

  598. We're all dealing with stuff.

  599. So we're to have

  600. compassionate hearts

  601. for one another.

  602. Merciful hearts.

  603. We should put on

  604. kindness.

  605. Which means

  606. gracious acts

  607. of goodness.

  608. That we care for one another

  609. to the degree

  610. that we serve one another.

  611. That we maybe as

  612. Romans 12 suggests

  613. that we compete

  614. to outdo one another

  615. in showing honor

  616. and serving each other

  617. in this way.

  618. We're to put on

  619. humility.

  620. Which means that we recognize

  621. who we are

  622. apart from Jesus Christ.

  623. Christ.

  624. Wretched thing

  625. that I am

  626. apart from Jesus.

  627. I have been given grace

  628. in abounding measure.

  629. I deserve nothing

  630. that I have.

  631. And yet,

  632. so often we act

  633. like we deserve

  634. everything

  635. that the world

  636. has to offer.

  637. We are to be

  638. humble.

  639. Paul writes in

  640. Philippians 2

    Philippians 2:3

  641. verses 3 and 4

  642. do nothing

  643. from selfish ambition

  644. or conceit.

  645. So here's the

  646. stated in the negative.

  647. This is the activity

  648. of the person

  649. who's not humble.

  650. Operating out of

  651. selfish ambition

  652. and conceit.

  653. But,

  654. in humility,

  655. count others

  656. more significant

  657. than yourselves.

  658. Let each of you

  659. look not only

  660. to his own interests

  661. but also

  662. to the interests

  663. of others.

  664. We're to put on

  665. humility.

  666. We're to put on

  667. meekness.

  668. gentleness.

  669. A synonym for this

  670. kind of

  671. is gentleness.

  672. But in the Greek

  673. it means a bit

  674. more than that.

  675. It's a person

  676. that's not

  677. gentle by

  678. lack of strength

  679. but a person

  680. who has strength

  681. and bridles

  682. that strength

  683. appropriately.

  684. Jesus Christ

  685. is the most

  686. wonderful example

  687. of this

  688. as he is

  689. of all

  690. righteous

  691. characteristics.

  692. You see him

  693. as we work

  694. through Mark

  695. recently.

  696. Stilling storms

  697. by his voice.

  698. Commanding the

  699. waves and they

  700. stop casting

  701. out demons.

  702. Pulling no

  703. punches with

  704. the Pharisees.

  705. Fierce in the

  706. way that he

  707. dealt with the

  708. world and sin.

  709. And then you

  710. see him inviting

  711. little children

  712. to come and

  713. sit on his lap.

  714. To me there's

  715. nothing more

  716. precious than

  717. some of the

  718. big strong men

  719. of our church

  720. and the way

  721. they hold

  722. their little

  723. babies.

  724. Stan Luttrell

  725. breaks my

  726. heart sometimes

  727. as big and

  728. strong as he

  729. is in the

  730. way he's so

  731. tender with

  732. his youngest

  733. daughter.

  734. This is a

  735. picture of

  736. meekness.

  737. Jesus Christ

  738. on the cross

  739. is the highest

  740. example of it.

  741. Having the

  742. power, being

  743. God himself,

  744. to just go

  745. ahead and say

  746. you know what

  747. we're not doing

  748. the cross thing.

  749. I'm just going

  750. to go ahead

  751. and judge and

  752. destroy the earth

  753. now.

  754. And yet he

  755. took it for

  756. our sake.

  757. This is that

  758. picture of

  759. meekness.

  760. We're to put

  761. on meekness.

  762. We're to put

  763. on patience.

  764. Not to be

  765. quick tempered.

  766. We're to be

  767. patient with

  768. one another.

  769. Because God

  770. bears with

  771. us.

  772. Just consider

  773. that for a

  774. moment.

  775. Think about

  776. the people that

  777. tend to annoy

  778. you, that you

  779. have a hard

  780. time being

  781. patient with,

  782. and then take

  783. on their

  784. characteristic.

  785. Am I ever

  786. that way

  787. toward God?

  788. And the answer

  789. is a resounding

  790. yes, you are

  791. that way

  792. toward God.

  793. And yet, he

  794. is patient

  795. with us.

  796. Ever loving.

  797. Verse 13

  798. goes on to

  799. kind of work

  800. some of this

  801. out.

  802. So what is that

  803. going to look

  804. like?

  805. If we're going

  806. to have these

  807. kinds of

  808. qualities and

  809. characteristics,

  810. what is this

  811. going to look

  812. like in our

  813. dealing with

  814. one another?

  815. And Paul

  816. says we are

  817. to bear with

  818. one another.

  819. And if we have

  820. a complaint against

  821. another, that

  822. we're to

  823. forgive one

  824. another.

  825. We're to

  826. bear with

  827. one another.

  828. And this

  829. means that

  830. it's going to

  831. be challenging

  832. to do this.

  833. Paul's not

  834. here promising

  835. that you just

  836. join a church

  837. and it's easy.

  838. It's all

  839. wonderful and

  840. everything is

  841. slick.

  842. That you're

  843. never going

  844. to have any

  845. personality

  846. conflict with

  847. somebody else.

  848. That you're

  849. not going to

  850. butt heads

  851. over some

  852. issue in

  853. the church.

  854. But here

  855. we're to

  856. bear with

  857. one another.

  858. And this is

  859. a great

  860. English

  861. translation.

  862. That idea

  863. that comes

  864. up in

  865. our minds

  866. of just

  867. dealing with

  868. somebody is

  869. exactly what's

  870. being communicated

  871. here.

  872. Because Christ

  873. is all.

  874. Because He's

  875. redeemed the

  876. souls of His

  877. people, we

  878. are to bear

  879. with one

  880. another.

  881. We're to

  882. work through

  883. those challenges

  884. of our

  885. relationship

  886. because Christ

  887. is all.

  888. Because He

  889. loves His

  890. church.

  891. And as

  892. such, so

  893. are we.

  894. Far too

  895. many people

  896. are looking

  897. for the

  898. peaceful

  899. place to

  900. go.

  901. I have

  902. been to

  903. churches and

  904. it just

  905. makes me

  906. sick the

  907. false

  908. kindness that

  909. goes around

  910. in those

  911. churches.

  912. It's just

  913. fake and you

  914. can feel the

  915. tension in

  916. the church.

  917. The good

  918. morning brother,

  919. how are you?

  920. And behind

  921. the scenes a

  922. person is

  923. saying I

  924. don't care

  925. at all.

  926. In fact,

  927. it would

  928. be okay with

  929. me if you

  930. went someplace

  931. else.

  932. There's a

  933. bitterness that

  934. broods in

  935. a lot of

  936. churches because

  937. people just

  938. don't like

  939. one another.

  940. And this is

  941. not the

  942. activity of a

  943. person who

  944. believes that

  945. Christ is

  946. all and

  947. that He is

  948. in all.

  949. We're to

  950. bear with

  951. one another.

  952. Turn to

  953. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  954. chapter 4.

  955. Beginning in

  956. verse 1.

  957. I

  958. therefore,

  959. a prisoner for

  960. the Lord,

  961. urge you to

  962. walk in a

  963. manner worthy

  964. of the calling

  965. to which you

  966. have been

  967. called because

  968. of who you

  969. are in

  970. Christ.

  971. Verse 2.

  972. With all

  973. humility and

  974. gentleness,

  975. with patience,

  976. this sounds

  977. familiar,

  978. doesn't it?

  979. Bearing with

  980. one another

  981. in love.

  982. Eager to

  983. maintain the

  984. unity of the

  985. Spirit in

  986. the bond of

  987. peace.

  988. Catch what

  989. Paul is saying

  990. to us there,

  991. that we have

  992. a unity.

  993. We have the

  994. unity of the

  995. Spirit because

  996. Christ is all

  997. and He is in

  998. all.

  999. Therefore,

  1000. we have a

  1001. unity.

  1002. This wonderful

  1003. commonality that

  1004. we all possess.

  1005. And yet,

  1006. we're to work.

  1007. We're supposed

  1008. to work that out.

  1009. We're supposed

  1010. to bear with

  1011. one another in

  1012. love.

  1013. We're supposed

  1014. to be eager

  1015. to maintain

  1016. that because

  1017. of what Christ

  1018. has done

  1019. for us.

  1020. So we're to

  1021. bear with one

  1022. another.

  1023. And if one

  1024. has a complaint

  1025. against another,

  1026. we're to forgive

  1027. each other.

  1028. You all don't

  1029. know that I

  1030. know most of

  1031. the things that

  1032. go on in our

  1033. church and

  1034. amongst our

  1035. people.

  1036. people.

  1037. I don't step

  1038. into the middle

  1039. of many

  1040. situations because

  1041. it's honestly

  1042. just not my

  1043. place.

  1044. I like to let

  1045. you guys work

  1046. your stuff out

  1047. on your own.

  1048. I have heard

  1049. on many

  1050. occasions little

  1051. comments like,

  1052. oh, well,

  1053. he doesn't

  1054. really like

  1055. him.

  1056. That is not

  1057. okay in our

  1058. congregation.

  1059. Hear me

  1060. clearly saying to

  1061. you, it's not

  1062. okay for you

  1063. to live that

  1064. way.

  1065. When we have

  1066. sign-ups for

  1067. things, I know

  1068. that some of

  1069. you wait to

  1070. sign up to go

  1071. do something

  1072. because you

  1073. want to see

  1074. who else is

  1075. going to sign

  1076. up and whether

  1077. or not it's a

  1078. group of people

  1079. you really want

  1080. to hang out

  1081. with.

  1082. Not okay.

  1083. If you should

  1084. serve in a

  1085. particular way,

  1086. sign up and

  1087. show up and

  1088. figure it out.

  1089. Learn to get

  1090. along and to

  1091. love each other.

  1092. It'll be a work

  1093. I promise, but a

  1094. work worthwhile.

  1095. If someone has

  1096. offended you,

  1097. forgive them.

  1098. They may owe

  1099. you an apology,

  1100. but either way,

  1101. forgive them.

  1102. And why?

  1103. Because the

  1104. Lord has

  1105. forgiven us.

  1106. Paul gives

  1107. that to us as

  1108. the example

  1109. for why.

  1110. Forgiving each

  1111. other as the

  1112. Lord has

  1113. forgiven you,

  1114. so you also

  1115. must, and

  1116. that's imperative,

  1117. forgive.

  1118. Apparel to

  1119. this is Ephesians

  1120. 4.32.

  1121. Be kind to

  1122. one another,

  1123. tenderhearted,

  1124. forgiving one

  1125. another as God

  1126. in Christ

  1127. forgave you.

  1128. You have

  1129. been forgiven

  1130. the highest

  1131. of offenses.

  1132. Eternal

  1133. offense.

  1134. A massive

  1135. weight.

  1136. An unpayable

  1137. debt has

  1138. been stricken

  1139. from your

  1140. record in

  1141. Christ.

  1142. You can

  1143. forgive somebody

  1144. the little

  1145. offense they

  1146. delivered in

  1147. the tone in

  1148. which they

  1149. said something.

  1150. Luke 7.47.

  1151. Jesus is

  1152. talking of the

  1153. woman who

  1154. comes in

  1155. and cries,

  1156. washes his

  1157. feet with

  1158. her tears,

  1159. and he

  1160. says,

  1161. but he

  1162. who has

  1163. forgiven

  1164. little

  1165. loves

  1166. little.

  1167. Beloved,

  1168. if you are

  1169. in Christ,

  1170. you have

  1171. been forgiven

  1172. much,

  1173. and therefore,

  1174. stating this

  1175. in the

  1176. positive,

  1177. we should,

  1178. it necessitates

  1179. that we

  1180. love much.

  1181. I want you

  1182. to hear me.

  1183. You're not

  1184. all easy

  1185. for me to

  1186. love.

  1187. I'm not

  1188. going to

  1189. tell you

  1190. who you

  1191. are,

  1192. but it's

  1193. just a

  1194. personality

  1195. thing sometimes.

  1196. Sometimes our

  1197. personalities rub

  1198. up against

  1199. each other.

  1200. I sometimes

  1201. don't have a

  1202. clue what to

  1203. say to

  1204. somebody.

  1205. I have

  1206. nothing to

  1207. say.

  1208. I fear

  1209. sometimes I

  1210. walk away

  1211. awkwardly

  1212. because I

  1213. don't know

  1214. what else

  1215. to say.

  1216. I'm just

  1217. talking and

  1218. then I

  1219. just go

  1220. and walk

  1221. away.

  1222. You're

  1223. not easy

  1224. to love,

  1225. but I

  1226. do love

  1227. you.

  1228. And I

  1229. do that

  1230. because it's

  1231. rooted in

  1232. the great

  1233. love that

  1234. God has

  1235. for me.

  1236. You are

  1237. His people.

  1238. And I

  1239. love the

  1240. things that

  1241. Jesus loves.

  1242. You are

  1243. all precious

  1244. to me

  1245. because you

  1246. are His.

  1247. In our

  1248. community

  1249. outreach groups,

  1250. we've been

  1251. studying through

  1252. the book of

  1253. Philippians

  1254. together.

  1255. And just

  1256. depending on

  1257. which evening

  1258. you meet.

  1259. Two weeks

  1260. ago for

  1261. some of

  1262. you,

  1263. just a

  1264. week ago

  1265. for others,

  1266. we looked at

  1267. Philippians 4,

    Philippians 4:1–3

  1268. verses 1-3.

  1269. I want you to

  1270. turn there real

  1271. quick.

  1272. I know a lot

  1273. of you are

  1274. familiar with

  1275. the text,

  1276. but I want you

  1277. to see it

  1278. just in case

  1279. you're not.

  1280. Maybe a little

  1281. obscure it seems.

  1282. You read past

  1283. it.

  1284. How many times

  1285. I've read right

  1286. through the book

  1287. of Philippians?

  1288. I read right

  1289. past verses

  1290. 1-3.

  1291. Something very

  1292. important that

  1293. Paul is doing

  1294. here.

  1295. He writes,

  1296. Therefore,

  1297. my brothers,

  1298. whom I love

  1299. and long for,

  1300. my joy and

  1301. crown,

  1302. stand firm

  1303. thus in the

  1304. Lord,

  1305. my beloved.

  1306. I entreat

  1307. Euodia and

  1308. I entreat

  1309. Cintiq to

  1310. agree in the

  1311. Lord.

  1312. Yes,

  1313. I ask you

  1314. also,

  1315. true companion,

  1316. help these

  1317. women who

  1318. have labored

  1319. side by side

  1320. with me in

  1321. the gospel

  1322. together with

  1323. Clement and

  1324. the rest of

  1325. my fellow

  1326. workers whose

  1327. names are in

  1328. the book of

  1329. life.

  1330. And that was

  1331. our text for

  1332. that evening

  1333. to discuss

  1334. together.

  1335. And I got

  1336. the treat of

  1337. getting to

  1338. fill in and

  1339. lead a group.

  1340. And the

  1341. question I led

  1342. with was,

  1343. how would you

  1344. feel if on a

  1345. Sunday morning

  1346. I got up and

  1347. I called out

  1348. two of you

  1349. who I've heard

  1350. weren't getting

  1351. along too

  1352. well?

  1353. I just pointed

  1354. you out and

  1355. I said,

  1356. oh, and while

  1357. we're at it,

  1358. I encourage

  1359. the two of

  1360. you, work

  1361. it out.

  1362. Come on.

  1363. Quit causing

  1364. so many

  1365. problems.

  1366. And how that

  1367. would make you

  1368. feel.

  1369. This is what

  1370. Paul does.

  1371. Paul wrote a

  1372. letter to the

  1373. church at

  1374. Philippi.

  1375. It was meant

  1376. to be read

  1377. out loud.

  1378. It's exactly

  1379. what he does

  1380. here.

  1381. As he seems

  1382. to pause,

  1383. for some

  1384. reason,

  1385. why does

  1386. he do

  1387. this?

  1388. It must

  1389. have been

  1390. really important.

  1391. It must

  1392. have been

  1393. of great,

  1394. great importance.

  1395. And here's

  1396. the thing

  1397. that I want

  1398. you to see

  1399. is that he

  1400. gives this

  1401. exhortation to

  1402. stand firm

  1403. in the Lord

  1404. and then he

  1405. turns right

  1406. from that

  1407. and he says

  1408. of these two

  1409. Christian women,

  1410. he affirms that,

  1411. they've labored

  1412. alongside me,

  1413. these are good

  1414. people who

  1415. something is

  1416. causing this

  1417. rift between

  1418. them.

  1419. And he gives

  1420. this treatise,

  1421. this encouragement

  1422. to get along,

  1423. you two get

  1424. along because

  1425. this type

  1426. of disunity

  1427. is a danger

  1428. to the church

  1429. standing firm

  1430. together.

  1431. Do we as a

  1432. congregation

  1433. stand firm

  1434. the way we

  1435. should and

  1436. is it possible

  1437. that we don't

  1438. because there

  1439. are these

  1440. divisions amongst

  1441. us?

  1442. It's very

  1443. possible.

  1444. If you look

  1445. up in

  1446. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1447. chapter 3,

  1448. Paul is

  1449. talking about

  1450. enemies of

  1451. the cross

  1452. of Christ

  1453. in verse

  1454. 19,

  1455. he says

  1456. their end

  1457. is destruction.

  1458. Their God

  1459. is their belly

  1460. and they glory

  1461. in their shame

  1462. with minds

  1463. set on

  1464. earthly things.

  1465. Who they

  1466. are.

  1467. These people

  1468. over there,

  1469. but our

  1470. citizenship

  1471. is in heaven

  1472. and from it

  1473. we await

  1474. a Savior,

  1475. the Lord

  1476. Jesus Christ.

  1477. Christ is

  1478. all

  1479. to those

  1480. who have

  1481. placed faith

  1482. in Him.

  1483. And when we

  1484. properly

  1485. function out

  1486. of that

  1487. reality,

  1488. we ought

  1489. not have

  1490. division

  1491. amongst us.

  1492. We ought

  1493. to love

  1494. one another

  1495. the way we

  1496. should.

  1497. Verse 14

  1498. presses that

  1499. point.

  1500. And above

  1501. all these,

  1502. put on

  1503. love,

  1504. which binds

  1505. everything together

  1506. in perfect

  1507. harmony.

  1508. Our culture

  1509. says that love

  1510. is an intense

  1511. feeling of

  1512. deep affection.

  1513. affection.

  1514. It's primarily

  1515. about the

  1516. way we

  1517. feel towards

  1518. a person

  1519. or towards

  1520. a thing.

  1521. Christian love

  1522. certainly is a

  1523. deep affection,

  1524. but it's rooted

  1525. and sustained

  1526. by God's

  1527. unchanging

  1528. affection for

  1529. His people.

  1530. We love

  1531. the church,

  1532. we love each

  1533. other because

  1534. we love

  1535. Christ,

  1536. and this is

  1537. what Christ

  1538. loves.

  1539. And that

  1540. affection seeks

  1541. the highest

  1542. good of the

  1543. object of that

  1544. affection.

  1545. So let me

  1546. read that to

  1547. you without

  1548. my interruptions.

  1549. Christian love

  1550. is a deep

  1551. affection which

  1552. is rooted and

  1553. sustained by

  1554. God's unchanging

  1555. affection for

  1556. His people that

  1557. seeks the

  1558. highest good of

  1559. the object of

  1560. that affection.

  1561. This is

  1562. Christian love.

  1563. Doing so many

  1564. weddings really

  1565. has kept present

  1566. on my mind what

  1567. marriage is meant

  1568. to represent,

  1569. this relationship

  1570. between Christ

  1571. and His church

  1572. that someday

  1573. we'll be reunited

  1574. with Him.

  1575. And this is the

  1576. metaphor that's

  1577. used, right,

  1578. that we would

  1579. better understand

  1580. what it means

  1581. for His bride,

  1582. the church,

  1583. to be reunited

  1584. with Christ.

  1585. Right?

  1586. Not an

  1587. individual,

  1588. but the church.

  1589. You are a part

  1590. of the church.

  1591. Your salvation

  1592. is corporate.

  1593. Jesus died for

  1594. the sins of

  1595. the church.

  1596. And beloved,

  1597. language is

  1598. powerful and it

  1599. works its way

  1600. into our minds

  1601. and there's a

  1602. phrase that's

  1603. found nowhere

  1604. in the Scriptures

  1605. which is used

  1606. constantly and

  1607. commonly in

  1608. churches of these

  1609. days and that

  1610. is personal

  1611. relationship

  1612. with Jesus

  1613. Christ.

  1614. This is the

  1615. question asked

  1616. in an invitation.

  1617. Do you have

  1618. a personal

  1619. relationship with

  1620. Jesus Christ?

  1621. And there is an

  1622. element to that

  1623. certainly that I

  1624. must place faith

  1625. in Jesus.

  1626. That if He died

  1627. for the sins of

  1628. the church,

  1629. He certainly

  1630. died as dying

  1631. for the greater

  1632. for the lesser

  1633. as well.

  1634. For me as an

  1635. individual,

  1636. right?

  1637. I pray to Him.

  1638. His Spirit lives

  1639. within me.

  1640. There is a personal

  1641. element to it,

  1642. but the Scriptures

  1643. way further,

  1644. like in greater

  1645. balance,

  1646. talk about how

  1647. it is that we're

  1648. saved together.

  1649. A people set

  1650. apart.

  1651. We have to begin

  1652. thinking rightly

  1653. and properly

  1654. about that.

  1655. We have to love

  1656. what Jesus loves.

  1657. Turn with me

  1658. finally to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1659. chapter 12.

  1660. We're almost done.

  1661. Amen.

  1662. Amen.

1663. If you love someone, to walk our text backwards.

1664. If you love someone, you forgive them.

1665. If you love them, you will bear with them.

1666. Love generates in us compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

1667. This is why Paul says, above all else, put on love.

  1668. Classic 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

1669. I'm sorry that I didn't get you there before.

1670. Let me start reading to you in verse 27.

1671. The Corinthian church had a lot of conflict in it concerning gifts, concerning spiritual gifts.

1672. And much of Paul's first letter to them addresses this issue.

1673. Verse 27, now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

1674. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.

1675. So these gifts that God has given to the church are all apostles, are all prophets, are all teachers, do all work miracles, do all possess gifts of healing, do all speak with tongues, do all interpret,

1676. but earnestly desire the higher gifts.

1677. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

1678. So there's these gifts that are in operation.

1679. And we won't get into the theology of that today.

1680. Not worth it right now, because that's not ultimately the point.

1681. He's saying we don't all have the same giftedness.

  1682. Seek the higher gifts.

1683. But, and this phrase is so fascinating, and I will show you a still more excellent way.

1684. I'm going to show you something better, greater, than the higher gifts that he's been referring to in the previous chapters.

1685. This is not just a kitschy text to read at a wedding.

  1686. Verse 1,

1687. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, I have a gift to speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love.

1688. I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

1689. And if I have prophetic powers that understand all mysteries and all knowledge.

  1690. Just huge phrases, right?

1691. And if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

1692. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

  1693. Here's this beautiful expression.

1694. I couldn't explain it better than Paul does here.

  1695. Beginning in verse 4,

1696. Love is patient and kind.

1697. Love does not envy or boast.

1698. It is not arrogant or rude.

1699. It does not insist on its own way.

1700. It is not irritable or resentful.

1701. It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

1702. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  1703. Love never ends.

1704. As for prophecies, they will pass away.

1705. As for tongues, they will cease.

1706. As for knowledge, it will pass away.

1707. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

  1708. When I was a child, I spoke like a child.

  1709. I thought like a child.

  1710. I reasoned like a child.

1711. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

1712. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.

1713. Now I know in part, then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

1714. What he's saying is that all of these things, the operation of the church is a shadow.

  1715. It's pointing to Christ.

1716. So when Christ comes, we'll fully get it.

1717. So that stuff will no longer be of great necessity.

1718. Verse 13, so now faith, hope, and love abide.

  1719. These three.

1720. But the greatest of these is love.

1721. So our main point today is that Christian people will be distinguished by the way they live in relation to one another.

1722. And the defining characteristic will be love.

1723. Jesus says in John 13, 35, by this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.

1724. How do we show the world a primary way that we show the world that we treasure Christ?

1725. First, we love each other.

1726. We look different in that way from the rest of the world in the way we relate to one another.

1727. In closing, I want to read to you a quote by a contemporary pastor named Arturo Azzerdia.

1728. I call him Pastor Art because Azzerdia is hard to say.

1729. He's the pastor of Trinity Church of Portland, Oregon.

1730. I commend him to you.

1731. Listen to Pastor Art's sermons.

  1732. They're wonderful.

  1733. He said this.

1734. Let's suppose that a kite could come to life and develop its own personality.

1735. On the one hand, it would feel the exhilaration that comes from the surges of wind that direct it through the sky.

1736. On the other hand, it would almost immediately take notice of something annoying.

1737. The tugging of the string at its center.

  1738. A feeling of constraint.

  1739. A resistance.

1740. Consumed, the kite begins to think to itself,

1741. If only I could detach.

1742. Then I could really fly.

1743. To the kite you see, it seems that the string is limiting its full experience of freedom.

1744. But as any boy or girl who has ever flown a kite knows,

1745. Were that string to suddenly snap, the kite wouldn't soar freely for very long.

1746. It would dart to and fro for a minute, maybe two,

1747. But very soon thereafter would end up on the ground in a pile of broken sticks and torn paper,

1748. Never ever to fly again.

1749. Rather, you see, it is the taut line between the kite and the one holding it that enables the kite to fly,

1750. That allows all the principles of aerodynamics to come into play,

1751. So that the kite might achieve its full purpose.

1752. Christian love performs the very same function as a kite string.

1753. You take away the stabilizing force of Christian love,

1754. And every towering gift, every supernatural power,

  1755. Every sacrificial act,

  1756. Every musical performance,

  1757. You name it, friends,

1758. It will all end up on the ash heap of eternal insignificance without love.

  1759. Let's pray together.
