  1. Let us all praise God together for the mercy He has shown us in the person and work of Jesus Christ by opening up the Word of God to the book of Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. If you have been gone this summer, you probably not have known that we've been studying through the book of Colossians and we had every intention of finishing it up last week and starting something new this morning, but we just didn't quite get there.

  3. There's probably another, oh, I'm going to guess five weeks out from finishing up the book in total.

  4. And if you have been here, I hope it's been very rich and good to you for your praise of God and for your pursuit of holiness.

  5. This morning's text is Colossians 3 verses 18 through 21.

    Colossians 3:18–21

  6. And I read, Wives, submit to your husbands as is fitting in the Lord.

  7. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

  8. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

  9. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.

  10. This is God's Word to us.

  11. It was written for His glory and our good.

  12. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  13. Now, over the past four weeks, we've studied together general exhortations for the new self, for the one whom Christ is all.

  14. You can see there in verse 11 of chapter 3.

  15. And we did so from verses 5 through 17.

  16. We talked extensively about what it means to put to death those things that are earthly in us.

  17. And to put on then as God's chosen ones the proper things for those for whom Christ is all.

  18. Today we're going to look at four specific exhortations to wives, to husbands, to children, and to parents.

  19. And Paul gives them to us in a rather rapid fire manner.

  20. They're kind of bang, bang, bang, bang, back to back to back with no prepositional transitions between them whatsoever.

  21. And I believe he does so in this way because they're all connected to the previous exhortations.

  22. Because of who we are now.

  23. If we have placed our faith in Jesus Christ.

  24. If he has sent his spirit into us and changed who we are.

  25. The old has passed away.

  26. The new has come.

  27. Because of who we are now, we will live differently.

  28. Specifically, we will live differently in the way we relate to one another as the church.

  29. That's what 5-17 is really talking about.

  30. About putting off these versions of perverted love and perverted hate.

  31. And putting on these righteous acts and how it is that we live together.

  32. And Paul now narrows that scope down from the broader sense to more specific relationships within the home.

  33. He notes for the Colossian believers and for us.

  34. Particular ways in which the old self manifests itself.

  35. And the new ways in which we should walk.

  36. Now some of you may already be asking the question.

  37. Is this the most appropriate text for a Sunday morning when college students return?

  38. I ask myself the very same question as we work through.

  39. We don't want to dogmatically work verse by verse through a text.

  40. Although this is our normal habit and pattern.

  41. Certainly it could be said that we could have stopped today to talk at length about something that seems to more specifically relate to college students.

  42. But through prayer and study.

  43. I think this is incredibly applicable to where you guys are in your lives.

  44. Because so many of you are so close to this next step.

  45. You're looking right now.

  46. I know I remember being in college for that mate that you'll marry and live out your life with.

  47. It's applicable because you're going to find many of you college students that you are still children.

  48. And so this text has a lot to say to you concerning that.

  49. And so I think very timely for where we are and for this particular Sunday.

  50. Four exhortations for the household of the new self are number one.

  51. This will be the outline for our text.

  52. An exhortation to wives.

  53. Number two, an exhortation to husbands.

  54. Number three, an exhortation to children.

  55. And finally, number four, an exhortation to parents.

  56. So firstly, an exhortation to wives.

  57. Verse 18.

  58. Wives, submit to your husbands as is fitting in the Lord.

  59. This word, submit, means to place oneself under the leadership of another.

  60. And I want to note this morning five things about the submission of the Christian wife.

  61. So these are your five sub points to point number one.

  62. If you like to outline, keep up.

  63. Today it might be a little hard.

  64. Firstly, it is a submission that is willful.

  65. It is a submission that is willful.

  66. Sub-translations render this verb, be subject to.

  67. But the Greek literally means to subject oneself.

  68. Wives, this is a submission that is given.

  69. Men, this is not a submission that is taken.

  70. It is a submission that is willful.

  71. Wives submitting themselves to their husbands.

  72. Secondly, it is a submission that does not relegate the value of the wife.

  73. It does not devalue the wife.

  74. Now this word submission seems to be a bad word in our day.

  75. It doesn't even get uttered amongst us.

  76. I had someone who I love dearly come and talk to me about the way in which I officiate weddings

  77. and asked me if I thought it was appropriate to even include the word submit or submission in that ceremony

  78. because the turn off it can be to some people to hear the gospel.

  79. And I just simply said I don't know what other word to use.

  80. It's a biblical word.

  81. I will use it because the Bible uses it and I will labor to explain it well.

  82. The word submission or submit even seems to be a bad word in some of our Christian churches.

  83. And so let me ask you kindly, particularly ladies, if this word makes you uncomfortable to hear me out.

  84. Hear what the Bible has to say about submission.

  85. There's a movement in our world of what's called egalitarianism,

  86. which seeks to find genders equal in all respects, in all manner,

  87. versus the view that we hold as a church which is called complementarianism.

  88. And that is that we see men and women as equal,

  89. but that they play different roles.

  90. The second point, it's a submission that does not relegate the value of the wife.

  91. It in no way devalues a wife to submit to her husband,

  92. but rather recognizes her God-ordained role as a wife.

  93. Let me give you a wonderful example of this.

  94. There's no higher example of anything that's right and proper than the example of Jesus Christ.

  95. Jesus subjected Himself to the will of the Father.

  96. He submitted to what the Father had for Him.

  97. This does not make Him a lesser part of the Trinity.

  98. Rather, and in fact, He has been highly exalted because of the way in which He served the Father.

  99. And He will be for all eternity.

  100. If we're to model this, ladies, there's a specific way in which you are to look Christ-like.

  101. And this is one of those ways to submit willingly to your husband.

  102. To understand a bit more of this, it's of great value for us to look at Genesis 1.

  103. You can turn there if you'd like or listen carefully to my reading.

  104. Women have great value in standing in God's eyes.

  105. We see this first telling of the creation of man and woman where it records,

  106. Then God said,

  107. Let us make man in our image after our likeness.

  108. The Trinitarian likeness.

  109. The way in which the Trinity functions together in relationship.

  110. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,

  111. and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock,

  112. and over all of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  113. Verse 27.

  114. So, God created man in His own image.

  115. In the image of God, He created him.

  116. Male and female, He created them.

  117. So, ladies, you have great value in the eyes of God,

  118. and in the eyes of this church.

  119. And a willing submission to your husband does not devalue you.

  120. Thirdly, the submission of a Christian wife is a submission that is not contingent on the quality of the leadership it submits to.

  121. It is not contingent.

  122. It is not dependent on the quality of the leadership it submits to.

  123. Notice the simplicity of the exhortation that Paul gives.

  124. He doesn't say, not wives, submit to your husbands when they love you.

  125. Or, wives, submit to your husbands when they lead you well.

  126. Or, wives, submit to your husbands when you feel like it.

  127. But simply, wives, submit to your husbands.

  128. Now, certainly it is easier to submit to loving leadership.

  129. And the next verse speaks to that.

  130. We find often in Christian relationships and otherwise, both positive and negative feedback loops.

  131. If a husband leads well, it's easy for his wife to submit well.

  132. Which makes leading a joy.

  133. It makes leading easier if the wife submits well to that.

  134. And so there's this positive feedback.

  135. One feeds the other and feeds the other.

  136. So often in relationships, one of those proper roles comes to a screeching halt and reverses itself.

  137. And ladies, it's very difficult to submit to a man who doesn't love you the way he should.

  138. So many households are disrupted because men are lazy.

  139. They're laid back.

  140. They don't fulfill the role they're meant to fulfill.

  141. And so women begin to.

  142. And the loop heads off in the other direction.

  143. Negative feedback.

  144. Negative feedback.

  145. Negative feedback.

  146. Someone has to stop that rotation.

  147. As a man, I will put the majority of the blame on men.

  148. But wives, you have to recognize that you're not less responsible for your submission when your husband leads poorly.

  149. You are 100% responsible for the command of God concerning your role.

  150. You will be held accountable for the way in which you submit apart from how your husband leads.

  151. So it's a submission that is not contingent on the quality of the leadership it submits to.

  152. Fourthly, it is a submission that bears the fruit of respect.

  153. It bears the fruit of respect.

  154. I'll step us away from Colossians for a moment to the parallel text, a very similar text that Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus chapter 5.

  155. You may want to go there and put your finger there because we're going to reference it on numerous occasions this morning.

  156. Ephesians chapter 5 verses 22 through 24.

    Ephesians 5:22–24

  157. Paul writes,

  158. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  159. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body and is himself its Savior.

  160. Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

  161. So here we see this pattern of exhortation.

  162. Wives, submit to your husbands.

  163. But then at the end of this passage and speaking of this, verse 33, Paul says,

  164. However, each one of you love his wife as himself.

  165. Exhortation to husbands.

  166. And the last part of that, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

  167. So submission, willing submission to a husband, bears the fruit of respect.

  168. Respect, it respects his position as the husband.

  169. Whether or not he does this well, it plays to that.

  170. You are my husband and therefore I will submit to her.

  171. This bears out in the way in which you talk about your husband, ladies.

  172. Are you supportive?

  173. Are you building up?

  174. Do people see you and say, this is a woman that respects her husband?

  175. Or are you a woman that merely tears down and tears down and tears down?

  176. This can sometimes be the problem with women's Bible studies.

  177. They become gripe fests about husbands.

  178. This ought not be so amongst us.

  179. It's a submission that bears the fruit of respect.

  180. And then fifthly and finally, it's a submission that recognizes God's good created order.

  181. The last part of verse 18 says,

  182. As is fitting in the Lord.

  183. As is right and proper for those who are found in Christ.

  184. That's what he is saying.

  185. It recognizes God's good created order.

  186. This is the way that God intended things to be.

  187. The leadership of a husband and the submission of a wife is not a result of the fall.

  188. It was the way things were designed to be before the fall.

  189. The fall disrupted it.

  190. The fall made it hard.

  191. But it was the good thing that God had created.

  192. After the first telling of mankind's creation in Genesis 1, 26-28,

  193. we see Genesis 1, 31,

  194. And God saw everything that he had made.

  195. And behold, it was very good.

  196. And there was evening and there was morning.

  197. The sixth day.

  198. In chapter 2, we see a second telling of the creation story.

  199. And we pick up some details about it.

  200. Genesis 2, 15 says,

  201. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.

  202. He gives man a mandate that you are meant to produce and protect the garden.

  203. And then in 2, 18, we read,

  204. Then the Lord God said,

  205. It is not good that the man should be alone.

  206. So everything had been good up to this point in the creation,

  207. but now we see something that is not good.

  208. It wasn't good that man be alone.

  209. And so God says,

  210. I will make a helper fit for him.

  211. A sidekick.

  212. Someone to come alongside the man and help him in this work that's been given to him.

  213. This was the created order.

  214. And it was good.

  215. It's good and proper, ladies, to pursue this.

  216. To submit willfully to your husband.

  217. If your husband doesn't lead you well to pray for him,

  218. that he might.

  219. To encourage him in that.

  220. To help that negative feedback loop come to a halt and move back in the other direction.

  221. Just willingly submit to your husband.

  222. Recognize God as the creator of the universe.

  223. And gives proper respect and worship to the way he intended things to be.

  224. Number two.

  225. You with me?

  226. Back to main point number two.

  227. It's not fair that I can see it and you can't.

  228. An exhortation to husbands.

  229. Men, we are most certainly not off the hook.

  230. An exhortation to husbands.

  231. Husbands, love your wives.

  232. And do not be harsh with them.

  233. We get two exhortations.

  234. One stated in the positive and one in the negative.

  235. Do live this way with your wives.

  236. Do not live this way with your wives.

  237. It seems to me that Paul feels the need to spell it out a little more clearly for us.

  238. I mean this.

  239. I don't mean this.

  240. Fellas.

  241. We're to love our wives.

  242. And I want to note two things about the love of the Christian husband.

  243. Number one.

  244. It is a love that is willful.

  245. The same way that submission is willful for the wife.

  246. Love is willful for the husband.

  247. This love.

  248. This word here used for love is the present tense of the imperative verb agapate.

  249. It's not referring to a love of passion or emotion.

  250. It's not based in how you feel.

  251. This is a love of choice.

  252. It is a covenant love.

  253. Husbands, you chose to marry your wives.

  254. Therefore, you are to love them.

  255. Without condition.

  256. Now and in a continuous manner.

  257. This is the exhortation Paul is giving to Christian husbands.

  258. Husbands, love your wives.

  259. And our culture is destroying the meaning of marriage.

  260. And I'm not referring to homosexual marriage.

  261. I'm referring to all the messed up marriages that we live in and around.

  262. The church is not insulated from this.

  263. This is happening within our churches.

  264. Marriage is such a flippant thing.

  265. It's just the next step in some process of feeling and emotion.

  266. People ought not say, I love you very much, but rather, I lust you very much.

  267. Let's get married.

  268. They have trashed it up and thrown it out.

  269. It is a sacred commitment before God.

  270. It is a commitment to love that woman until death causes you to part.

  271. The Christian man does not fall in and out of love.

  272. These are not words that should come out of our mouths.

  273. And some of you may need to man up by the grace that God provides and love.

  274. Your wives.

  275. When I officiate weddings, I always say this kind of as the close of the preaching component of the ceremony.

  276. I say, remember this.

  277. Your feelings do not sustain the covenant that you are making today.

  278. But the covenant you are making today properly exercised will sustain your love.

  279. And by that, I mean the passionate love for one another.

  280. It is a love of volition.

  281. We choose to love our wives.

  282. Secondly, it is a love that is sacrificial.

  283. Let's look again at the parallel text in Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  284. Paul's a little tougher on the Ephesian church than he is on the Colossian church here.

  285. We are going to look at verses 25-30 of Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  286. Much of feminism in our day is a response to male chauvinism.

  287. Men, you need to hear this.

  288. The way in which you talk about and the way in which you treat women generally.

  289. And those of us who are husbands, the way we treat our wives, often feminism is a response to this.

  290. Many of you know I was a sociology major at University of North Georgia.

  291. Then North Georgia College and State University.

  292. I believe I was a sociology major in one of the darkest times in that degree program.

  293. And I enjoyed that.

  294. I liked going in and being light in a dark place.

  295. I liked having my understanding of the truth challenged at every term.

  296. My favorite professor in college was an atheist, an admitted atheist feminist,

  297. who had both a husband, excuse me, a father.

  298. I've said the word husband too many times.

  299. A father and a brother who were Baptist preachers.

  300. So he knew all of the typical arguments.

  301. And he would get really mad if you made the typical argument.

  302. He would cuss you out if you made the typical argument.

  303. And so he forced, by God's grace, he was such a tool used by God,

  304. he pushed my face into the scriptures because I knew there had to be absolute truth

  305. and that his challenges needed to be answered.

  306. And I had a sociology of religion class with him

  307. where he basically took the entire semester to make the case that Christianity was horrible to women.

  308. And he loosely quoted, didn't send anybody to any text,

  309. but pulled out of context this idea of submission

  310. and how horrible this was, the enslaving of women.

  311. I think it's a response.

  312. I think it's a response to things that he had seen.

  313. And there were girls in the class that just applauded this.

  314. And my heart broke for them.

  315. I don't know the circumstances of their lives,

  316. who their fathers were, what they had experienced and seen.

  317. But one day he was particularly railing

  318. and he actually referenced Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  319. finally referenced something.

  320. And so I simply took my Bible out of my bag

  321. and I had it out on my desk and I was just looking at the text,

  322. not saying a word.

  323. And by God's providential hand,

  324. we're getting close to the end of class

  325. and boy, they were just going at it.

  326. And I was just reading the text

  327. and I was sad for what was going on in the room

  328. because they weren't going on.

  329. They weren't going on to verse 25.

  330. And finally, he's no longer at the school.

  331. His name was Dr. Luck.

  332. He said,

  333. Alright, Nathan.

  334. What do you think?

  335. In that tone.

  336. I hadn't raised my hand.

  337. I think I may have grinned at them a few times.

  338. Maybe this was it.

  339. Alright, Nathan.

  340. What do you think?

  341. I had the great pleasure of turning to the class

  342. and saying,

  343. you have to hear the rest of the text.

  344. You can't stop there.

  345. You can't just stop there.

  346. You can't tear it apart

  347. and do whatever you want with it.

  348. You have to read the rest of the text.

  349. And it reads, beginning in verse 25,

  350. Husbands, love your wives.

  351. And he goes on,

  352. As Christ loved the church

  353. and gave Himself up for her.

  354. Jesus Christ died for the sake of the church.

  355. This is the kind of love

  356. that husbands are meant to show their wives.

  357. Verse 26,

  358. That He might sanctify her,

  359. having cleansed her by the washing of water

  360. with the Word,

  361. so that He might present the church to Himself

  362. in splendor,

  363. without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,

  364. that she might be holy and without blemish.

  365. In the same way,

  366. husbands should love their wives

  367. as their own bodies.

  368. He who loves his wife loves himself.

  369. For no one ever hated his own flesh,

  370. but nourishes and cherishes it

  371. just as Christ does the church.

  372. because we are members of His body.

  373. So I read that and I just said,

  374. I don't know what experiences you've had in life.

  375. But if you find a man

  376. that is willing to love you this way,

  377. I believe that you will want

  378. to submit to this man.

  379. And the room fell silent.

  380. And Dr. Luck said,

  381. I think that's good for today.

  382. And we left.

  383. And I don't know what happened,

  384. what came of that,

  385. but I was thankful that God allowed me

  386. to speak truth into this situation.

  387. I think that so much feminism,

  388. so much, not all of it,

  389. but so much of it,

  390. is a response to the way in which

  391. men have loved their wives.

  392. And this is meant to be

  393. a sacrificial love.

  394. We become servants of our wives.

  395. We lay down our lives

  396. for the sake of theirs.

  397. John Piper has a wonderful definition of love

  398. that I'm going to give application to here.

  399. He wrote,

  400. Love is doing whatever you need to do

  401. to help people,

  402. insert your wife.

  403. Love is doing whatever you need to do

  404. to help your wife

  405. see and savor the glory of God in Christ

  406. forever and ever.

  407. Love seeks the highest good

  408. of the object of that love.

  409. Husbands, we should love our wives in this way.

  410. We should lead them to Christ

  411. every single day.

  412. And then there's the negative exhortation

  413. to not be harsh with our wives.

  414. Do not be harsh with them.

  415. Different translations render this differently.

  416. The NSB renders this.

  417. Do not be embittered against them.

  418. It could rightly be translated,

  419. Do not have the habit of being embittered.

  420. And what Paul means is,

  421. Do not display a harshness of temper

  422. or resentment toward your wife.

  423. To state the same in the positive,

  424. Appreciate your wife.

  425. Rightly see her as a gift from God,

  426. as a grace to you.

  427. Men, even when they're not easy to see

  428. in this light.

  429. Our wives aren't perfect,

  430. but yet still they're given to us as a gift.

  431. They're sanctifying for us.

  432. They're helpers to us.

  433. They're a helper fit for us.

  434. And we should love them accordingly.

  435. And I can tell you this,

  436. it has been my experience

  437. in my short nine and a half years now

  438. of marriage,

  439. that when I love my wife properly,

  440. she responds in kind.

  441. She so gladly falls into that place

  442. of submission and loves and serves

  443. and supports me.

  444. The more I lovingly lead her,

  445. the more lovely she becomes

  446. as she fulfills her role.

  447. She seems to come to life in that place.

  448. And when I don't love her well,

  449. when she's conflicted on how she's supposed

  450. to act in our home and with our children,

  451. this is when she becomes a challenge to me.

  452. You see that it's not her fault,

  453. but it's mine.

  454. Love your wives as you should.

  455. As I previously stated,

  456. your wife is responsible for 100%

  457. of the command of God concerning her role.

  458. However, if you want to see the quality

  459. of a leader,

  460. look to the quality of those

  461. who are put under his leadership.

  462. Men, this should cause you to quake.

  463. We have a responsibility to our wives.

  464. And many of us are too weak as leaders.

  465. And I hope that this causes you

  466. to run to the grace of God.

  467. He has commanded that you would do this thing.

  468. And He will provide for all that He commands.

  469. Now, to wives and husbands,

  470. your marriage matters.

  471. It matters to you,

  472. but it matters so much more than that.

  473. Firstly, your marriage matters

  474. because of what it is meant to display.

  475. Back in Ephesians 5,

    Ephesians 5:31

  476. verses 31 and 32,

  477. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother

  478. and hold fast to his wife,

  479. and the two shall become one flesh.

  480. That's Genesis 2, 32, I believe.

  481. And then Paul goes on to say,

  482. this mystery,

  483. the fact that they leave

  484. and they cleave together,

  485. that they become one flesh,

  486. he says this mystery is profound.

  487. And I'm saying that it refers to Christ

  488. and the church.

  489. Your marriage is not firstly and foremost about you.

  490. Oh, do we reap the benefits of marriage.

  491. There's so much that is good for us about marriage,

  492. but it's not firstly about you.

  493. It's firstly about Christ.

  494. It's a shadow of a thing to come.

  495. And it's meant to portray this

  496. to the world around us.

  497. Your marriage matters

  498. because of what it's meant to display.

  499. Your marriage also matters

  500. because of who is meant to see it.

  501. The world needs to see God's good creation

  502. and praise Him for it.

  503. They need to see that the way

  504. in which God designs things to work, works.

  505. They see that and they go,

  506. this is an amazing thing.

  507. These Christian marriages are astounding to us.

  508. That they may turn and praise God

  509. for the things that He has done.

  510. This church needs to see your marriage

  511. displayed in a healthy manner.

  512. These young people,

  513. so many of these young people,

  514. married folks,

  515. come from broken homes.

  516. Homes that are disrupted.

  517. I cannot believe the more we get to know

  518. college students,

  519. how few college students come from homes

  520. that are healthy.

  521. It's the exception and not the norm.

  522. I hear of a young person

  523. that has a family that's still intact

  524. and I praise God for it.

  525. Wait, you mean your mom and your dad

  526. are still married?

  527. Incredible!

  528. And those that are together

  529. and actually walking with the Lord

  530. and leading in the household,

  531. that are actively engaged

  532. in the life of a church,

  533. it's so slim.

  534. You want to know a way

  535. that you can serve the church?

  536. If you're married, husbands, wives,

  537. even those of you who are young in this,

  538. brand new husbands and wives,

  539. there is a ministry for you.

  540. Wives, submit to your husbands.

  541. Husbands, love your wives

  542. and seek opportunities

  543. to share your lives

  544. with the young adults in our church.

  545. Paul exhorts Titus to this ministry

  546. that people often call Titus 2 ministry,

  547. which is just this idea

  548. that in the church,

  549. there should be a passing along

  550. of skill set,

  551. that older women

  552. should be teaching younger women

  553. how it is they're meant to live.

  554. And the same for older men

  555. to younger men.

  556. I encourage you to go read Titus 2

  557. and I won't for the sake of time

  558. this morning.

  559. Submit to your husbands.

  560. Love your wives.

  561. It has deep and meaningful impact

  562. for you and beyond.

  563. Now a quick aside

  564. concerning dating.

  565. You ready?

  566. The Bible does not speak to us

  567. about dating.

  568. There's no instruction

  569. in the Scriptures

  570. concerning dating.

  571. We believe that this book

  572. is timely,

  573. that it's inerrant,

  574. that it's sufficient.

  575. That means it contains

  576. everything in it

  577. that we need to know

  578. for godly living.

  579. How curious that it excludes

  580. dating.

  581. Some process by which

  582. we're supposed to sort through

  583. all of the people

  584. that we interact with

  585. and find the one.

  586. I grew up at a church,

  587. a large, large church,

  588. where I was actually taught

  589. this was the normal

  590. and healthy process,

  591. that I built my good quality list

  592. and my bad quality list

  593. by getting to know people

  594. of the opposite sex.

  595. Horrible, horrible theology

  596. concerning that.

  597. Christian dating,

  598. we can call it something else.

  599. Some people like to call it courtship.

  600. Some people have a real aversion

  601. to that term.

  602. I don't really care,

  603. so I'm going to call it

  604. Christian dating,

  605. should look much different

  606. than that of the world.

  607. It should look dramatically different

  608. than that of the world.

  609. So much dating today

  610. is just glorified divorce practice.

  611. Now, an aside to my aside.

  612. Most of you,

  613. and I don't know a lot of you,

  614. but I know where you're at

  615. in your stage of life,

  616. most of you do not possess

  617. the maturity to date

  618. as a Christian should.

  619. Your desire for a girlfriend

  620. or boyfriend

  621. is in so many cases

  622. an idol for you.

  623. You worship yourself

  624. or you worship somebody else

  625. or you worship some idea

  626. before God.

  627. If you cannot be satisfied

  628. in Christ,

  629. then you are not ready

  630. to date.

  631. If you look to anyone

  632. other than God

  633. for your approval,

  634. then you are not ready

  635. to date.

  636. If your identity

  637. is solidified

  638. or shattered

  639. based on whether or not

  640. you were in a relationship,

  641. then you are not ready

  642. to date.

  643. If you do not know

  644. if you're ready to date,

  645. then you're probably not.

  646. And let me encourage you,

  647. even if you believe

  648. that you are,

  649. to ask for godly counsel

  650. from someone

  651. who is married,

  652. who's on the other side

  653. of all of the silly feelings

  654. that accompany

  655. single life

  656. and dating.

  657. Ask someone

  658. who's stepped beyond that

  659. and has a little more

  660. clarity of head

  661. to help you

  662. and to examine you

  663. and to see if you're

  664. actually ready

  665. to enter into

  666. a godly relationship

  667. that ends

  668. in marriage.

  669. Enough about that.

  670. Number three,

  671. main point number three,

  672. an exhortation

  673. to children.

  674. Verse 20,

  675. children,

  676. obey your parents

  677. in everything

  678. for this

  679. pleases

  680. the Lord.

  681. Now,

  682. how do we define

  683. a child?

  684. Right?

  685. A little bit of a difficult

  686. thing to do.

  687. We get into some

  688. cultural issues.

  689. Think in the Scriptures,

  690. you saw this rite

  691. of passage

  692. for the Jewish people

  693. around the age

  694. of 12 or 13.

  695. It was called

  696. the Bar Mitzvah.

  697. It was a passage

  698. into manhood.

  699. Many more things

  700. were expected.

  701. In our culture,

  702. we've created

  703. a whole category

  704. of person

  705. that we don't find

  706. in the Scriptures

  707. anywhere,

  708. and that is teenager.

  709. It seems in so many ways

  710. to be the result

  711. of young people worship.

  712. We worship youth

  713. in this country

  714. to such a high degree.

  715. We want to prolong youth,

  716. prolong youth,

  717. prolong.

  718. Many of your parents

  719. wanted to absolve you

  720. of all responsibility

  721. throughout high school

  722. because they just wanted

  723. you to have a great time

  724. because those are

  725. the good old days

  726. and you've got to soak

  727. everything up out of it

  728. that you possibly can.

  729. And so many of you

  730. enter into college

  731. having no clue

  732. how to live life

  733. as an adult.

  734. That's kind of an aside.

  735. I think,

  736. if we're going to take

  737. what we look at

  738. both biblically

  739. and for our culture,

  740. this is the way

  741. I would define a child.

  742. I think that while

  743. you're under

  744. the provision

  745. of your parent,

  746. the primary provision,

  747. your livelihood comes,

  748. your ability to survive

  749. as a human being

  750. comes from your parent,

  751. then you're a child.

  752. This includes many of you

  753. in the room today.

  754. And I don't mean that

  755. as an insult at all.

  756. I just mean to say to you,

  757. how does this exhortation

  758. apply to you?

  759. How do you function

  760. at your age

  761. in this world

  762. in your particular context?

  763. Let's note two things

  764. about the proper obedience

  765. of Christian children.

  766. I have,

  767. you'll note I said

  768. Christian children here.

  769. I think this is the exhortation

  770. that Paul means.

  771. It's been writing to believers

  772. and writing to believers

  773. and writing to believers.

  774. I don't think he means

  775. to turn aside.

  776. So I think that these things

  777. are meant to be exhortations

  778. to Christian children,

  779. obey your parents

  780. in everything.

  781. I have a five-year-old

  782. and a three-year-old,

  783. Cade and Judah,

  784. and they cannot obey everything

  785. Sam and I ask of them.

  786. They're absolutely sinful.

  787. They prove it every single day.

  788. We try and we try

  789. and we try.

  790. And they are bound

  791. to be deceptive.

  792. They're bound

  793. to go around.

  794. I asked Judah the other day

  795. why he did something

  796. and he said,

  797. I was just being sneaky.

  798. Exactly.

  799. Exactly.

  800. So I don't think that Paul,

  801. while we should exhort

  802. our children to obey,

  803. we certainly should,

  804. I think Paul means this,

  805. to be a command

  806. that can be kept

  807. by the power of Christ

  808. in these young people.

  809. So firstly,

  810. it is an obedience

  811. that is not contingent

  812. on the quality

  813. of the leadership

  814. it submits to.

  815. Obedience is an outflow

  816. of submission

  817. and it's not contingent

  818. on the quality

  819. of the leadership.

  820. I know that some

  821. of your parents

  822. don't lead you well.

  823. I know that some

  824. of the things

  825. they ask and require

  826. of you don't make sense.

  827. But it's not contingent

  828. on that.

  829. Obey your parents

  830. in everything.

  831. You ought to obey them.

  832. Disobedience to parents

  833. marks the ungodly.

  834. Paul writes

  835. in 2 Timothy 3, 2,

  836. for people will be

  837. lovers of self,

  838. lovers of money,

  839. proud,

  840. arrogant,

  841. abusive,

  842. disobedient

  843. to their parents,

  844. ungrateful,

  845. unholy.

  846. He goes on

  847. in the next

  848. verse.

  849. Provided

  850. that their desires

  851. do not contradict

  852. the expressed

  853. commands

  854. of God.

  855. Young people

  856. in this room,

  857. obey your parents

  858. in everything,

  859. provided their desires

  860. do not contradict

  861. the expressed

  862. commands

  863. of God.

  864. Jesus anticipated

  865. there would be

  866. people that would

  867. come to faith

  868. in Christ

  869. and their family

  870. would not be

  871. okay with it.

  872. He says in Luke 12,

  873. 51-53,

  874. do you think

  875. that I have come

  876. to give peace

  877. on earth?

  878. No, I tell you,

  879. but rather division.

  880. For from now on

  881. in one house

  882. there will be

  883. five divided,

  884. three against two

  885. and two against three.

  886. They will be divided

  887. father against son

  888. and son against father,

  889. mother against daughter

  890. and daughter against mother,

  891. mother-in-law

  892. against her daughter-in-law

  893. and daughter-in-law

  894. against her mother-in-law.

  895. We know as a church

  896. this is real.

  897. We deal with this

  898. type of thing,

  899. pursuing the Lord

  900. and having parents

  901. who don't,

  902. who want us to live

  903. in contradiction

  904. to the expressed

  905. commands of God.

  906. And I'm using that phrase

  907. very carefully

  908. because a common question

  909. asked with young people,

  910. young people want to

  911. go on a particular trip.

  912. Typically,

  913. it's a mission trip.

  914. They want to go someplace

  915. with their summer

  916. and their parents

  917. just aren't comfortable

  918. with it.

  919. Unbelieving parents

  920. say,

  921. I don't want you to go.

  922. That could be dangerous.

  923. I'm not comfortable

  924. with you traveling.

  925. I don't want to spend money

  926. in that way.

  927. And students get so

  928. wrecked over that.

  929. But God wants me to go.

  930. God has called me to go.

  931. Has He?

  932. He's called you

  933. to obey your parents.

  934. That's clear.

  935. Your feeling,

  936. your desire

  937. to go someplace

  938. does not trump

  939. the expressed command

  940. of God

  941. in the Scriptures.

  942. your parents

  943. forbid you

  944. to have faith

  945. in Jesus Christ.

  946. Your parents

  947. forbid you

  948. to meet,

  949. to congregate

  950. with other Christians.

  951. Your parents

  952. forbid you

  953. to share your faith

  954. with your roommate

  955. or your co-worker.

  956. Then you have

  957. God's permission

  958. to go around

  959. their command.

  960. Because you feel

  961. like you want

  962. to do something

  963. is not

  964. a permission

  965. to ignore

  966. the expressed command

  967. of God

  968. to obey

  969. your parents.

  970. I hope that clears

  971. up some frustration

  972. for some of you

  973. this year.

  974. Secondly,

  975. it is an obedience

  976. that seeks

  977. to please God.

  978. And the last part

  979. of that verse,

  980. for this

  981. pleases

  982. the Lord.

  983. Again,

  984. part of His

  985. good created

  986. order.

  987. There's many

  988. strict instructions

  989. in the Old Testament

  990. in the civil law

  991. for those children

  992. who didn't obey

  993. their parents

  994. to be put to death.

  995. Civil law,

  996. it's passed away.

  997. Parents can't do

  998. that under

  999. our nation's laws.

  1000. But this is how

  1001. seriously

  1002. God takes this.

  1003. Why?

  1004. Because He loves

  1005. His creation.

  1006. Exodus 20.12

  1007. in the Ten Commandments

  1008. says,

  1009. Honor your father

  1010. and mother

  1011. that your days

  1012. may be long

  1013. in the land

  1014. that the Lord

  1015. your God

  1016. is giving you.

  1017. There goes

  1018. discipline right now.

  1019. Right, Liz?

  1020. Honor your father

  1021. and mother

  1022. that your days

  1023. may be long

  1024. in the land

  1025. that the Lord

  1026. your God

  1027. is giving you.

  1028. It will go

  1029. good for you

  1030. if you obey

  1031. your parents.

  1032. Ephesians 6.1

  1033. Children,

  1034. you should know

  1035. this one with me.

  1036. We've memorized it.

  1037. Children,

  1038. obey your parents

  1039. and the Lord

  1040. for this

  1041. is

  1042. right.

  1043. Obedience

  1044. to your parents

  1045. even at your age,

  1046. many of you,

  1047. is good

  1048. and pleasing

  1049. to God.

  1050. One other note

  1051. before we move on

  1052. to the fourth exhortation.

  1053. I know I'm running

  1054. long on time.

  1055. Notice that the children,

  1056. at least those

  1057. old enough

  1058. to understand

  1059. the reading

  1060. of Paul's letter,

  1061. were there.

  1062. He doesn't say,

  1063. be sure to tell

  1064. the children

  1065. to obey their parents.

  1066. The letter itself,

  1067. Paul specifically

  1068. addresses the children.

  1069. Now, I don't know

  1070. what that means.

  1071. I can't draw a line

  1072. anywhere in the sand,

  1073. but I'm just saying

  1074. to you,

  1075. it's an interesting

  1076. place to note

  1077. that children

  1078. were part of

  1079. church gathering.

  1080. We're glad for that.

  1081. If you're a total guest

  1082. and you've never

  1083. been here before,

  1084. we love kids.

  1085. We don't see them

  1086. as a burden,

1087. but rather as a blessing

  1088. to our church.

1089. We're glad to have them

1090. in our meetings with us.

  1091. Okay, fourth,

  1092. an exhortation

  1093. to parents.

  1094. Verse 21,

  1095. fathers,

  1096. do not provoke

  1097. your children

  1098. lest they become

  1099. discouraged.

  1100. You've heard me

  1101. a couple of times

  1102. now say

  1103. there's an exhortation

  1104. here to parents

  1105. and this is why.

  1106. The Greek word

  1107. for fathers

  1108. is used specifically

  1109. for father,

  1110. but it's used

  1111. generally for parent.

  1112. It's used in a broader

  1113. sense for parent.

  1114. So, translators

1115. get into a spot here.

  1116. Well, which way

  1117. do we go?

  1118. Who is Paul specifically?

  1119. Is he talking about

  1120. the general parent

  1121. or is he talking

  1122. about the specific

  1123. father?

  1124. And many have gone

  1125. the father route

  1126. and I respect translators.

  1127. They are much more

  1128. intelligent than I,

  1129. but I also respect

  1130. commentators who

  1131. tend to disagree

  1132. with the translators

  1133. so very often.

1134. So, let me kind of

  1135. break this down.

  1136. The primary responsibility,

  1137. the primary responsibility

1138. of the raising of children

  1139. falls to the husband.

1140. The raising of our kids,

  1141. our boys,

1142. in the fear and admonition

  1143. of the Lord,

  1144. rests on my shoulders.

  1145. But praise God,

  1146. I've been given a helper

  1147. suitable to me,

  1148. right?

  1149. A good helper.

  1150. Someone who I can

  1151. task out with things

  1152. that can help

  1153. in this process

1154. as I go off to work

1155. and she is at home

  1156. with the children.

  1157. I believe it's more

  1158. proper to understand

  1159. Paul to be addressing

  1160. both parents

  1161. because of this.

  1162. Even if,

  1163. rightly it should say,

  1164. fathers,

  1165. fathers still have

  1166. partners in this process

1167. and so I like to say

  1168. parents.

  1169. As children have

  1170. a responsibility

  1171. to their parents,

  1172. so parents

  1173. have a responsibility

  1174. to their children

1175. and it is a higher

  1176. responsibility.

  1177. Children just simply

  1178. get to obey.

  1179. Parents have the responsibility

  1180. of raising up.

  1181. Ephesians 6.4 says,

  1182. fathers,

  1183. do not provoke

  1184. your children to anger

  1185. but bring them up

  1186. in the discipline

  1187. and instruction

  1188. of the Lord.

  1189. This means that

  1190. we are to bring

  1191. our children up

  1192. in a way

  1193. in which they

  1194. fear God,

  1195. they understand God,

  1196. that they get

  1197. the Gospel.

1198. And this is a challenge

  1199. in the raising

  1200. of children.

  1201. How to speak

  1202. to their hearts

  1203. and not just

  1204. their minds.

  1205. How to help

  1206. them to understand

  1207. that their disobedience

  1208. is ultimately

  1209. an offense against

  1210. God and not just

  1211. mommy or daddy.

  1212. It's a work

  1213. in our home.

  1214. We're always trying

  1215. to find ways

  1216. in which we can

  1217. do this well.

  1218. I love now

  1219. that Kay and my

  1220. five-year-old's

  1221. little wheels

  1222. are turning

  1223. and the things

  1224. that I've been

  1225. saying to him

  1226. since he was

  1227. a little guy,

  1228. one-year-old,

  1229. I'm already trying

  1230. to use the right

  1231. language with him,

  1232. are starting to

  1233. click into gear.

  1234. He's starting

  1235. to get the concept

  1236. of sin

  1237. and what obedience

  1238. to God looks like.

  1239. He's starting

  1240. to see that I'm

  1241. an agent of the

  1242. Lord to help him

  1243. walk in the way

  1244. of the Lord

  1245. and therefore

  1246. it's right and

  1247. proper for him

  1248. to obey.

  1249. We desperately

  1250. want this to bear

  1251. fruit in their

  1252. lives.

  1253. We want our

  1254. children to be

  1255. regenerate.

  1256. We want them

  1257. to belong to

  1258. the Lord and

  1259. honor them with

  1260. their lives.

  1261. And this is the

  1262. great call for

  1263. parents to

  1264. children.

  1265. He says in

  1266. this negative

  1267. exhortation,

  1268. do not provoke

  1269. your children

  1270. lest they become

  1271. discouraged.

  1272. This idea of

  1273. not provoking

  1274. your children

  1275. means to stir

  1276. up or to

  1277. irritate or

  1278. to exasperate.

  1279. Failure to

  1280. not provoke

  1281. them can cause

  1282. them to become

  1283. discouraged.

  1284. NASB renders

  1285. that to lose

  1286. heart or to

  1287. be without

  1288. courage.

  1289. And the

  1290. picture there

  1291. I think is

  1292. this constant

  1293. nagging,

  1294. nitpicking,

  1295. beating down.

  1296. You can never

  1297. do anything

  1298. right in the

  1299. sight of your

  1300. parents.

  1301. Your parents

  1302. are on top

  1303. of you all

  1304. the time.

  1305. Always hard.

  1306. Always hard.

  1307. Always hard.

  1308. Never encouraging.

  1309. Never helping

  1310. the children see

  1311. that they have

  1312. value and that

  1313. they know that

  1314. they're trying

  1315. and they're

  1316. working at it.

  1317. Never saying

  1318. to the children,

  1319. I'm proud of

  1320. you.

  1321. We could get

  1322. into this for

  1323. the longest

  1324. of time,

  1325. but it's

  1326. 10 till

  1327. 12,

  1328. so I'm

  1329. going to

  1330. skip a

  1331. bit down

  1332. in this.

  1333. Parents,

  1334. we are not

  1335. to provoke

  1336. our children

  1337. unless they

  1338. become discouraged.

  1339. We don't

  1340. want our

  1341. kids feeling

  1342. like they

  1343. can never

  1344. do anything

  1345. right in

  1346. our eyes.

  1347. We are to

  1348. lovingly train

  1349. our children.

  1350. The opposite

  1351. of this would

  1352. be to lovingly

  1353. train and

  1354. encourage our

  1355. children in

  1356. the right way.

  1357. To correct

  1358. them in the

  1359. same way that

  1360. God corrects

  1361. us.

  1362. His children.

  1363. Children need

  1364. to learn that

  1365. there are

  1366. consistent

  1367. consequences

  1368. for their

  1369. actions.

  1370. Consistent

  1371. consequences.

  1372. Like rules

  1373. need to be

  1374. made and

  1375. consequences for

  1376. breaking those

  1377. rules and

  1378. those things

  1379. need to be

  1380. followed through.

  1381. The writer of

  1382. Hebrews says

  1383. in chapter 12

  1384. verse 6,

  1385. for the Lord

  1386. disciplines the

  1387. one he loves

  1388. and chastises

  1389. every son

  1390. whom he receives.

  1391. It is good

  1392. and right

  1393. and proper

  1394. that we

  1395. discipline

  1396. our children.

  1397. Children need

  1398. to properly

  1399. understand

  1400. grace.

  1401. We should

  1402. not dismiss

  1403. their disobedience

  1404. but give

  1405. loving

  1406. discipline.

  1407. I hear this

  1408. a lot in

  1409. the talk of

  1410. Christian

  1411. parents.

  1412. I'll tell you

  1413. now that it's

  1414. laziness.

  1415. It's not well

  1416. motivated.

  1417. It's just

  1418. laziness.

  1419. But the

  1420. passing over,

  1421. the sometimes

  1422. punishing and

  1423. the sometimes

  1424. not intending

  1425. to display

  1426. the character

  1427. of God,

  1428. God did

  1429. not pass

  1430. over our

  1431. sins in a

  1432. dismissive way

  1433. like,

  1434. well,

  1435. I'm just

  1436. going to

  1437. look at

  1438. Nathan and

  1439. I'm just

  1440. not going

  1441. to discipline

  1442. Nathan for

  1443. all of his

  1444. sin.

  1445. No,

  1446. God fully,

  1447. in a way I

  1448. can never

  1449. do with my

  1450. children,

  1451. God fully

  1452. punished my

  1453. sin in

  1454. Christ.

  1455. The punishment

  1456. had to be

  1457. dealt out.

  1458. That was the

  1459. just thing for

  1460. God to do.

  1461. He took all

  1462. of my

  1463. sin and

  1464. he laid

  1465. it on

  1466. Christ.

  1467. The perfect,

  1468. the spotless,

  1469. the one who

  1470. had lived a

  1471. sinless life.

  1472. He gave it

  1473. to him and

  1474. then he gave

  1475. me his

  1476. righteousness.

  1477. This double

  1478. imputation that

  1479. occurred in

  1480. that way.

  1481. So now I

  1482. can stand

  1483. justified before

  1484. God having

  1485. to have all

  1486. my sins

  1487. forgiven because

  1488. they were

  1489. punished in

  1490. Christ.

  1491. And I can

  1492. now be an

  1493. adopted son

  1494. in right

  1495. standing with

  1496. the Lord.

  1497. By just

  1498. ignoring some

  1499. of the things

  1500. our children

  1501. do, we

  1502. don't accomplish

  1503. this.

  1504. We don't

  1505. teach them

  1506. the gospel.

  1507. The way you

  1508. teach your

  1509. children the

  1510. gospel is

  1511. that you

  1512. punish them

  1513. when they

  1514. sin and

  1515. then you

  1516. talk to

  1517. them about

  1518. sin and

  1519. the ultimate

  1520. punishment for

  1521. sin and

  1522. you tell them

  1523. that you

  1524. love them and

  1525. that they're

  1526. yours and

  1527. they'll never

  1528. not be

  1529. yours.

  1530. We always

  1531. reconcile after

  1532. punishment in

  1533. our house.

  1534. Right?

  1535. After I wear

  1536. Cade's rear end

  1537. out and he's

  1538. done thinking

  1539. about what he

  1540. did, we go

  1541. have a conversation

  1542. about why he

  1543. was punished,

  1544. that he sees

  1545. it's the

  1546. consequence for

  1547. what he

  1548. did.

  1549. It's not

  1550. because dad's

  1551. mean, it's

  1552. because he

  1553. broke my

  1554. law and

  1555. therefore a

  1556. punishment was

  1557. necessary for

  1558. that.

  1559. And I always

  1560. tell him that

  1561. he's my son

  1562. and I love

  1563. him and that's

  1564. why his

  1565. obedience is so

  1566. important to

  1567. me because I

  1568. want what's

  1569. good and

  1570. what's right

  1571. for him.

  1572. That's grace.

  1573. This is the

  1574. way that God

  1575. deals with us.

  1576. That when Cade

  1577. is disobedient to

  1578. me that I

  1579. don't kick him

  1580. out on the

  1581. street and

  1582. say you're

  1583. not my son

  1584. anymore.

  1585. I want

  1586. nothing to do

  1587. with you.

  1588. Good luck,

  1589. five-year-old.

  1590. The fact that I

  1591. don't do that

  1592. is grace.

  1593. That I love

  1594. him in this

  1595. way.

  1596. Children need

  1597. to properly

  1598. understand grace.

  1599. And so do

  1600. we.

  1601. We need to see

  1602. that relationship

  1603. with God and

  1604. children are so

  1605. very helpful for

  1606. us in this.

  1607. And so there's

  1608. four exhortations

  1609. for the

  1610. household of

  1611. the new

  1612. self.

  1613. One to

  1614. wives, one to

  1615. husbands, one to

  1616. children, and

  1617. one to parents.

  1618. The one for

  1619. whom Christ is

  1620. all, the one

  1621. who treasures

  1622. Christ above all

  1623. else, will live

  1624. differently than

  1625. they once did and

  1626. will live

  1627. differently than

  1628. the world that

  1629. surrounds them.

  1630. We shouldn't

  1631. take these

  1632. exhortations lightly

  1633. this morning because

  1634. Christ Family

  1635. Church exists to

  1636. glorify God by

  1637. experiencing,

  1638. proclaiming, and

  1639. displaying the

  1640. supremacy of Jesus

  1641. Christ in all

  1642. things to all

  1643. peoples.

  1644. Let's pray

  1645. together.
