  1. Morning, Christ family. I invite you to turn to the book of Hebrews, chapter 12, Hebrews chapter 12, Hebrews chapter 12 with me.

Hebrews 12 chapter mention Hebrews 12 chapter mention Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  2. And I see a lot of new faces today, and for those of you who may not know me, my name is Jonathan Hoffman. I do go by John, either or works for me.

  3. I am a member of this church body, and I am also a recent graduate of the apprenticeship program that Nathan leads, which is a program.

  4. It's about a year apprenticeship for those who are interested and have a sense of calling to do ministry vocationally.

  5. And Nathan asked me to preach this morning as he takes the week to do some planning and vision and goal setting.

  6. And he told me I could preach on whatever topic I wanted to, which I told him hopefully he will not regret afterwards.

  7. And so through prayer and conviction, I have decided to preach on a topic of much theological controversy.

  8. And it has been controversial through the history of the church.

  9. For most of you, this won't be anything new, and you have studied God's Word on the topic.

  10. You are well informed and have come to a conclusion of what you believe to be the truth in accordance to Scripture.

  11. For others of you, you have heard the terms, you know the controversies, you know what your parents or your friends have told you of the topic.

  12. But that may be the extent of your knowledge, because you have not searched the Scriptures yourself.

  13. And so you may not be well informed, but you might even be very one-sided on the topic.

  14. And you may even be a little hostile in your thinking towards the opposite view.

  15. And for others of you, you may have never heard of these theological views or terms, and it may be completely new to you.

  16. But ultimately, regardless of where you stand in the spectrum of these three, it is your duty, Christian.

  17. And it should be, hopefully, your joy, believer, to search out the Scriptures for truth concerning the very character of your God.

  18. And so, especially for those of you who may be hostile to or uncomfortable with terms such as Calvinism,

  19. predestination, election, doctrines of grace, total depravity, and the like.

  20. I ask you, and I beg you to please put that aside and just listen to what I have to say this morning.

  21. And weigh out what I have to say against the Scriptures.

  22. And not against what others have told you concerning the matter at hand.

  23. And after the fact, if you have questions or concerns, please ask.

  24. There are many here who are well-educated on the topic.

  25. And who have strong convictions firmly planted from Scriptural foundations.

  26. And if you see me around, please ask.

  27. I love to discuss theology.

  28. I love it.

  29. So please, ask somebody if you have questions.

  30. Search out the Scriptures yourself for truth.

  31. And I pray that in the end, regardless of what your beliefs are,

  32. that we can love one another and serve our Lord side by side.

  33. Because ultimately, this is not about us.

  34. It is not about us.

  35. And so there are two reasons why I want to share with you as to why I decided to preach on this topic this morning.

  36. And first of all, it's because I firmly, firmly believe that the current status of the church in America,

  37. the reason for a watered-down Christianity and the growing number of false converts,

  38. people who call themselves Christian, who believe themselves to be Christian,

  39. but are not Christian, comes from a lack of knowledge.

  40. And yes, specifically from a lack of knowledge of these glorious doctrines.

  41. And secondly, I chose this topic because in my own walk with Christ,

  42. nothing has spearheaded me further into true piety.

  43. Nothing has so inclined my heart towards the pursuit of God.

  44. And nothing has brought me down lower on my knees in dependence, worship, and adoration

  45. than these truths found in these old doctrines.

  46. And this, to me, seems to be a pattern with other Calvinist brothers that I know.

  47. That is the same experience that they have had.

  48. And for me, it began with a little book that a man from my Sunday school class gave me

  49. called Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God by J.I. Packer.

  50. I was a new convert probably not even a year into my conversion.

  51. I was pretty zealous at the time for street evangelism.

  52. And knowing that, this guy gave me this book.

  53. I was very excited to read the book, and that's why I first encountered the term Calvinism

  54. and these doctrines of election.

  55. And I actually remember stopping, putting the book down, and thinking to myself,

  56. this cannot be right.

  57. This is not true.

  58. Now, before I became a believer, I was an atheist.

  59. Most of my life, up until I was converted at the age of 21.

  60. And in the process of being drawn to Christ, I set out to look for truth.

  61. I knew that logically speaking, there could only be one source of ultimate truth.

  62. And I wanted to be honest and unbiased in the pursuit of it.

  63. And ever since, that has been my mentality when it comes to the things of God, such as theology.

  64. I want nothing but logical, unbiased, scripturally drenched truth.

  65. And so I searched the scriptures on the matter of Calvinism and was convinced of their truths.

  66. And I stand before you now to proclaim them.

  67. And so my prayer this morning is that you would give all this in unbiased consideration

  68. and determine whether or not it's biblical.

  69. But my ultimate goal this morning is that all of you would walk out of this place with a higher view of Christ.

  70. His person, His work, His love, and His mercy.

  71. As we read of Him and exposit on just the first half of verse 2 in Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  72. Where we read,

  73. Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.

  74. Let's pray together.

  75. Father, I just thank You for this time, Lord.

  76. And I just pray that You would be at work in us, Father.

  77. I pray that You would work it in us to desire to search for nothing but truth.

  78. Lord, I just pray that You would work through me.

  79. And Lord, that love would just overflow from this place after the fact.

  80. Lord, that we would be zealous to work for You regardless of where we stand on theological differences.

  81. Lord, we love You because You first loved us.

  82. And we thank You for all that You have done for us.

  83. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  84. It was Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a British pastor of the 1800s,

  85. who's also known as the Prince of Preachers,

  86. who once stated, and I quote,

  87. There is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified

  88. unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism.

  89. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism.

  90. Calvinism is the gospel and nothing else.

  91. I do not believe we can preach the gospel if we do not preach justification by faith without works,

  92. nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace,

  93. nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah,

  94. nor do I think we can preach the gospel unless we base it upon the special and particular redemption of His elect

  95. and chosen people with which Christ wrought out upon the cross.

  96. Nor can I comprehend the gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called

  97. and suffers the children of God to be turned in the fires of damnation after having once believed in Jesus.

  98. Close quote.

  99. It was Spurgeon's understanding of Calvinistic theology,

  100. also termed the doctrines of grace,

  101. that so magnified and lifted up the gospel in his mind

  102. and so constrained his heart in an unquenchable zeal in the service of his God.

  103. And in the history of the church,

  104. there has been a long line of godly men who have held these truths.

  105. Calvinism did not originate from John Calvin.

  106. Calvin was but a preacher of these doctrinal truths.

  107. Truths which giant contenders of the faith preached hundreds of years even before Calvin.

  108. In his book, Pillars of Grace, A Long Line of Godly Men,

  109. Dr. Stephen Lawson, who is professor of biblical and theological studies at Ligonier Ministries,

  110. or Ligonier Academy,

  111. and also professor of theology, or correction,

  112. professor of preaching at the Master's Seminary

  113. and founder of One Passion Ministries,

  114. sets out to show how some of the most esteemed men of the faith

  115. in the history of the church have upheld the doctrines of grace.

  116. And through the careful study of the writings of the following list of men,

  117. from the early church fathers to the reformers,

  118. Lawson shows that these men would today be called Calvinists.

  119. They being Clement of Rome,

  120. Ignatius of Anioc,

  121. Justin Martyr,

  122. Irenaeus of Lyons,

  123. Tertullian of Catheridge,

  124. Cyprian of Catheridge,

  125. Athanasius of Alexandria,

  126. Basil of Cassaria,

  127. Gregory of Nazianzus,

  128. Ambrose of Milan,

  129. Augustine of Hippo,

  130. Isidore,

  131. Gottschak,

  132. Aslam of Canterbury,

  133. Bernard of Claravaux,

  134. Thomas Bradwaren,

  135. John Wycliffe,

  136. John Huss,

  137. Martin Luther,

  138. Ulrich Zwingli,

  139. William Tyndale,

  140. Heinrich Bullinger,

  141. and John Calvin.

  142. That was his list up to the reformers,

  143. but we could add such names to that list,

  144. such as Charles Spurgeon,

  145. John Knox,

  146. William Bradford,

  147. George Whitefield,

  148. Jonathan Edwards,

  149. Robert Murray McShane.

  150. The list goes on and on and on.

  151. But there has been no greater preacher,

  152. no greater proclaimer of the doctrines of grace,

  153. than the very author of them,

  154. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  155. And this is what we will see this morning

  156. as we look at Jesus

  157. as the founder and perfecter of our faith.

  158. And so I have divided this text

  159. into two main headings

  160. with two subheadings each,

  161. in which we will draw out

  162. the five points of Calvinism.

  163. Those being total depravity,

  164. unconditional election,

  165. limited atonement,

  166. irresistible grace,

  167. and perseverance of the saints.

  168. These are also known by its acronym form,

  169. TULIP,

  170. although we will not be going through them

  171. in that particular order.

  172. So our first heading this morning

  173. is simply,

  174. Founder of Our Faith,

  175. under which we have two subheadings,

  176. the first one being,

  177. He created a way for lost sinners.

  178. So Jesus Christ is the founder of our faith

  179. in that He created a way for lost sinners.

  180. The message of the Bible is that of redemption.

  181. It is the message of a loving, powerful,

  182. just, holy Creator,

  183. who out of love,

  184. from the foundation of the world,

  185. from before the foundation of the world,

  186. creates a plan to redeem lost sinners to Himself.

  187. He created Adam and Eve,

  188. the first humans,

  189. in His image,

  190. in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

  191. They were in perfect contentment

  192. and communion with God

  193. until they willfully disobeyed God

  194. and broke His commandment.

  195. Therefore,

  196. sin entered the world,

  197. condemning the whole human race

  198. and enslaving the freedom of the will

  199. to the depravity of a sinful nature.

  200. Romans 5, verses 18 and 19

    Romans 5:18

  201. reveal this truth to us

  202. as it says,

  203. St. Augustine writes,

  204. and I quote,

  205. From the bad use of free will,

  206. there originated the whole train of evil,

  207. which, with its continuation of misery,

  208. convoys the human race

  209. from its depraved origin

  210. as from a corrupt root.

  211. Close quote.

  212. Herein lies the doctrine of total depravity.

  213. And let's get a wider picture of this from Scripture

  214. because I believe this doctrine to be vital

  215. in order for the rest to stand.

  216. So turn with me to Genesis chapter 6,

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  217. Genesis chapter 6,

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  218. and look at verses 5 through 7.

  219. Genesis chapter 6, verses 5 through 7.

    Genesis 6:5–7

  220. We read,

  221. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man

  222. was great in the earth,

  223. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart

  224. was only evil continually.

  225. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth,

  226. and it grieved him to his heart.

  227. So the Lord said,

  228. I will blot out man whom I have created

  229. from the face of the land,

  230. man and animals,

  231. and creeping things,

  232. and birds of the heavens,

  233. for I am sorry that I have made them.

  234. Now listen to verse 5 again.

  235. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man

  236. was great in the earth,

  237. and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart

  238. was only evil continually.

  239. Did you get that?

  240. Every intention?

  241. Every single intention.

  242. Man could not even think

  243. without the very inner foundations

  244. of the intent being fundamentally evil.

  245. But look even closer.

  246. It says that they were only evil.

  247. There was no trace whatsoever of goodness or righteousness.

  248. And look even closer yet again.

  249. The word continually,

  250. meaning there was never any turning from this norm.

  251. There was no repentance.

  252. And this describes the entire human race to this day.

  253. And so what did God do about it?

  254. He wiped out the entire human race at that point.

  255. But by grace,

  256. only eight people were the exception.

  257. Noah and his family along with a number of animals.

  258. But were these eight also then

  259. the exception to that description of depravity?

  260. No.

  261. Every one of those who were saved by the ark

  262. was stained by the same sin nature

  263. described in verse 5.

  264. And through them it continued to be passed down to this day.

  265. Now you might be thinking,

  266. but that description in verse 5

  267. is before the flood, not after.

  268. Well then, let's go to chapter 8.

  269. So turn a few pages with me to chapter 8

  270. and see what it says after the flood.

  271. Chapter 8 and verse 20.

  272. The flood has subsided.

  273. And then we read in chapter 8 verse 20.

  274. Do you see that?

  275. It doesn't say that the intentions of man's heart

  276. was evil from his youth.

  277. It says the intention of man's heart

  278. is evil from his youth.

  279. That's in the present tense.

  280. And that's after the flood.

  281. This is God declaring after the flood

  282. the same pronouncement of depravity

  283. in man as it was before the flood.

  284. This is why David says in Psalm 51 5,

  285. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity

  286. and in sin did my mother conceive me.

  287. This is why Psalm 58 3 says,

  288. The wicked are estranged from the womb.

  289. They go astray from birth.

  290. And who are the wicked?

  291. The human race.

  292. That is what Jesus says in Mark 10 18

  293. when he says,

  294. No one is good except God alone.

  295. That's why Romans 3 verses 9 through 12 says,

    Romans 3:9–12

  296. Both Jews and Greeks are under sin.

  297. As it is written,

  298. None is righteous.

  299. No, not one.

  300. No one understands.

  301. No one seeks after God.

  302. All have turned aside.

  303. Together they have become worthless.

  304. No one does good.

  305. Not even one.

  306. This is what Ephesians 2 means

  307. when it says in verses 1 through 3,

  308. You were dead in the trespasses and sins

  309. in which you once walked,

  310. following the course of this world,

  311. following the prince of the power of the air,

  312. the spirit that is now at work

  313. and the sons of disobedience,

  314. among whom we all once lived

  315. in the passions of our flesh,

  316. carrying out the desires of the body and the mind,

  317. and were by nature,

  318. by nature,

  319. children of wrath,

  320. like the rest of mankind.

  321. This is why Romans 8 7 and 8 says,

  322. For the mind that is set on the flesh

  323. is hostile to God,

  324. for it does not submit to God's law.

  325. Indeed, it cannot.

  326. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  327. That's what Romans says.

  328. Do you see that?

  329. And so based on that alone,

  330. let me ask you this.

  331. Is not repenting

  332. and placing your trust in Christ

  333. something that is pleasing to God?

  334. Just that act alone.

  335. Is that not something that is pleasing to God?

  336. Yet how can anyone who is dead

  337. in trespasses and sins,

  338. and therefore with a mind

  339. that is hostile to God,

  340. and unable to please God,

  341. repent and trust in Christ

  342. of their own will,

  343. and thereby pleasing God?

  344. Do you see that?

  345. It is against the very nature

  346. of the natural man

  347. to freely and willfully

  348. come to Christ,

  349. as it is against the very nature

  350. of a loving,

  351. pregnant woman

  352. to plunge a steak knife

  353. into her own abdomen.

  354. Now this may sound harsh,

  355. but I believe it to be true

  356. based on what we have just looked at.

  357. This is the true state

  358. of the unregenerate man.

  359. That's what the Bible teaches.

  360. This is the true condition of the heart.

  361. Like sheep,

  362. we have all gone astray

  363. in this condition,

  364. and in this condition

  365. even our greatest works

  366. are but filthy rags.

  367. In this state,

  368. we are all slaves

  369. to the ruler of this world,

  370. the devil,

  371. completely in bondage to sin,

  372. totally depraved,

  373. hostile towards God,

  374. utterly unable

  375. to freely choose

  376. to do anything pleasing to God.

  377. Is that not a scary thought?

  378. Yet,

  379. is this not what

  380. these scriptures teach?

  381. And this is why God

  382. had to be the one to act

  383. to make a way for sinners.

  384. And this is why Jesus

  385. is the founder of our faith

  386. in this sense.

  387. In John 8,

    John 8:34

  388. verse 34,

  389. Jesus says,

  390. Truly, truly,

  391. I say to you,

  392. everyone who practices sin

  393. is a slave to sin.

  394. And in verse 36,

  395. He says,

  396. So,

  397. if the Son

  398. sets you free,

  399. you will be free

  400. indeed.

  401. If who sets you free?

  402. The Son.

  403. And who

  404. initiates the freeing?

  405. The Son.

  406. In John 6,

  407. 44,

  408. Jesus says,

  409. No one can come to me

  410. unless the Father

  411. who sent me

  412. draws him.

  413. God had to be the one

  414. to make a way

  415. because what would we have here

  416. if He were to have left it

  417. at this?

  418. We would have all of mankind

  419. going to hell

  420. and yes,

  421. originally condemned

  422. by the sin of Adam,

  423. but by no means

  424. just by it.

  425. Every single person

  426. is responsible

  427. for His own sin.

  428. And so here we have

  429. a picture of a God-hating,

  430. self-loving,

  431. depraved humanity

  432. who would rather go to hell

  433. than repent

  434. and turn from their wicked ways.

  435. In John 3, 20,

  436. Jesus says,

  437. Everyone who does

  438. wicked things

  439. hates the light

  440. and does not come

  441. to the light,

  442. lest his works

  443. be exposed.

  444. And so if God

  445. would have stopped there

  446. and not saved anyone

  447. and not have acted at all,

  448. would He be at fault

  449. for allowing

  450. all of humanity

  451. to end up in hell

  452. for all eternity?

  453. No.

  454. And He would be

  455. completely just

  456. and completely

  457. righteous

  458. in that act

  459. because His justice

  460. and His holiness

  461. would be put on display.

  462. But praise be

  463. to God,

  464. brothers and sisters,

  465. that He did not

  466. stop there

  467. and that out of

  468. love and kindness

  469. and pure grace,

  470. He became

  471. the founder,

  472. the author

  473. of our faith

  474. by creating a way

  475. for lost sinners.

  476. Depraved,

  477. God-hating sinners.

  478. And so here we affirm

  479. the next doctrine of grace

  480. called

  481. unconditional election.

  482. Turn with me

  483. to 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  484. chapter 2.

  485. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 2 chapter mention

  486. chapter 2.

  487. Verses 13 and 14.

  488. It reads,

  489. But we ought always

  490. to give thanks to God

  491. for you, brothers,

  492. beloved by the Lord,

  493. because God chose you

  494. as the firstfruits

  495. to be saved

  496. through sanctification

  497. by the Spirit

  498. and belief

  499. in the truth.

  500. To this He called you

  501. through our gospel

  502. so that you may obtain

  503. the glory of our Lord

  504. Jesus Christ.

  505. Christ.

  506. Now,

  507. we won't spend

  508. much time on this one

  509. because it's hard

  510. to deny that Scripture

  511. teaches election

  512. and predestination.

  513. That being,

  514. that before the foundation

  515. of the world,

  516. out of a mass

  517. of depraved humanity

  518. to be,

  519. without merit

  520. or condition

  521. or any future doing

  522. on the part

  523. of the sinner,

  524. out of His grace

  525. and love

  526. and for His glory

  527. and for His Son,

  528. He chose a multitude

  529. of them

  530. to snatch them

  531. out of the fire

  532. of their own making

  533. to demonstrate

  534. His mercy

  535. and His glory

  536. and His grace

  537. in them.

  538. That's what Jesus means

  539. when He tells His disciples

  540. in John 15, 16,

  541. You did not choose Me

  542. but I chose you

  543. and appointed you

  544. that you should go

  545. and bear fruit

  546. and that your fruit

  547. should abide.

  548. And it's what He refers to

  549. when He says

  550. in Matthew 11, 27,

  551. No one knows the Son

  552. except the Father.

  553. And no one knows the Father

  554. except the Son

  555. and anyone

  556. whom the Son

  557. chooses

  558. to reveal Him.

  559. This is what Paul

  560. refers to in Romans 11, 5

  561. when he says

  562. that there is a remnant

  563. chosen by grace.

  564. And in Ephesians 1, 4

  565. when he says

  566. He chose us in Him

  567. before the foundation

  568. of the world.

  569. And in verse 5,

  570. He predestined us

  571. for adoption

  572. as sons

  573. through Jesus Christ

  574. according to the purpose

  575. of His will

  576. to the praise

  577. of His glorious grace

  578. with which He

  579. has blessed us

  580. in the Beloved.

  581. That's why Peter

  582. calls us

  583. a chosen race,

  584. a royal priesthood,

  585. a people

  586. for His own possession.

  587. That is why Acts 13, 48,

  588. as the gospel

  589. is being preached,

  590. it says,

  591. And when the Gentiles

  592. heard this,

  593. they began rejoicing

  594. and glorifying

  595. the word of the Lord.

  596. and as many

  597. as were appointed

  598. to eternal life

  599. believed.

  600. They believed

  601. because they were

  602. appointed

  603. to eternal life.

  604. They were unconditionally

  605. elected

  606. by a gracious

  607. and merciful God.

  608. And I want to,

  609. once again,

  610. just reiterate

  611. that in electing,

  612. God is merely,

  613. by grace,

  614. to give you

  615. an illustration,

  616. snatching people

  617. out of a burning building

  618. who actually

  619. want to stay

  620. in that burning building.

  621. And when He does so

  622. and snatches

  623. the select few out,

  624. He opens their eyes

  625. and shows them

  626. their foolishness.

  627. And the ones

  628. that stay

  629. in the burning building

  630. and were not

  631. pulled out by God

  632. do so

  633. because they would

  634. rather stay

  635. in that building

  636. than to come

  637. to God.

  638. Election

  639. is unconditional.

  640. Do you recall

  641. the story

  642. in Exodus

  643. of the crossing

  644. of the Red Sea?

  645. God sends

  646. a strong wind

  647. parts the Red Sea.

  648. The people of Israel

  649. begin to cross

  650. on dry land.

  651. Pharaoh

  652. and his Egyptian army

  653. follow after,

  654. pursue after Israel.

  655. And if you could

  656. just imagine

  657. imagine

  658. a bird's eye view

  659. of this scene,

  660. you have

  661. both

  662. the Egyptians

  663. and Israel

  664. on this dry land

  665. and they are

  666. perfectly paralleled

  667. by massive

  668. walls

  669. of ocean

  670. being held back

  671. only

  672. by the power

  673. of God.

  674. And let me ask

  675. you this,

  676. out of

  677. all those

  678. people

  679. on that stretch

  680. of land,

  681. could any

  682. one of them

  683. stand

  684. before

  685. a holy God

  686. and be considered

  687. spotless

  688. and righteous

  689. out of their

  690. own doing?

  691. Of course not.

  692. None of them.

  693. Not one.

  694. And so,

  695. in this case,

  696. God would have

  697. been

  698. just

  699. in

  700. even wiping

  701. all of them

  702. out.

  703. But instead,

  704. out of His grace,

  705. He chose

  706. to save the Israelites

  707. not because

  708. anything

  709. that He saw

  710. in them,

  711. not because of

  712. any goodness

  713. in them

  714. or any future

  715. acts

  716. on their behalf.

  717. life.

  718. But as we see

  719. in Exodus 6,

  720. it is God

  721. who

  722. unconditionally

  723. elects.

  724. It is God

  725. who initiated

  726. a covenant

  727. with Israel

  728. of His own

  729. choosing.

  730. And that's

  731. the beauty

  732. of election.

  733. And that's

  734. the beauty

  735. and grace

  736. of our Savior.

  737. That though

  738. we do not

  739. deserve it,

  740. and we cannot

  741. in our own

  742. ability

  743. make the

  744. massive

  745. crushing

  746. waves

  747. of our

  748. sin

  749. part

  750. so that

  751. we may

  752. make our

  753. way to

  754. the other

  755. side,

  756. Jesus,

  757. the founder

  758. of our

  759. faith,

  760. went before

  761. us

  762. and made

  763. a way

  764. so that

  765. not one

  766. drop

  767. of that

  768. ocean

  769. would ever

  770. touch

  771. our heads.

  772. Praise God

  773. for His

  774. electing

  775. grace.

  776. Spurgeon

  777. put it

  778. quite well

  779. when he

  780. says,

  781. it's a good

  782. thing

  783. God chose

  784. me

  785. before I

  786. was born

  787. because He

  788. surely would

  789. not have

  790. chosen me

  791. afterwards.

  792. Close quote.

  793. What a

  794. mighty

  795. Savior,

  796. a leader,

  797. pioneer,

  798. author,

  799. founder of

  800. our faith,

  801. and that He

  802. made a way

  803. for sinners.

  804. And this

  805. leads us to

  806. our second

  807. subheading for

  808. how Christ

  809. is the

  810. founder of

  811. our faith,

  812. that being

  813. that Christ

  814. is the

  815. founder of

  816. our faith

  817. and that He

  818. is the

  819. giver

  820. of the

  821. new

  822. birth.

  823. He is

  824. the

  825. giver

  826. of the

  827. new

  828. birth.

  829. It is

  830. the

  831. emphatic

  832. affirmation

  833. of our

  834. Lord Jesus

  835. Christ in

  836. John 3,

  837. 3,

  838. that unless

  839. one is

  840. born again,

  841. he cannot

  842. see the

  843. kingdom of

  844. God.

  845. And it

  846. is the

  847. unequivocal

  848. teaching of

  849. Scripture

  850. that it

  851. is God

  852. that through

  853. His

  854. sovereign,

  855. unconditional

  856. election,

  857. births within

  858. those elect

  859. repentance and

  860. faith unto

  861. everlasting life.

  862. It is here

  863. that we see

  864. the doctrine

  865. of grace

  866. entitled

  867. Irresistible

  868. Grace.

  869. Irresistible

  870. Grace.

  871. In John

    John 3:3–8

  872. 3,

  873. verses 3-8,

  874. Jesus tells

  875. Nicodemus,

  876. a teacher

  877. of the

  878. law,

  879. truly,

  880. truly,

  881. I say to

  882. you,

  883. unless one

  884. is born

  885. again,

  886. he cannot

  887. see the

  888. kingdom

  889. of God.

  890. Nicodemus

  891. said to

  892. him,

  893. how can

  894. a man

  895. be born

  896. when he

  897. is old?

  898. Can he

  899. enter a

  900. second time

  901. in his

  902. mother's

  903. womb and

  904. be born?

  905. Jesus

  906. answered,

  907. truly,

  908. truly,

  909. I say

  910. to you,

  911. unless

  912. one is

  913. born of

  914. water

  915. and the

  916. spirit,

  917. he cannot

  918. enter the

  919. kingdom

  920. of God.

  921. That which

  922. is born

  923. of flesh

  924. is flesh,

  925. and that

  926. which is

  927. born of

  928. the spirit

  929. is spirit.

  930. Do not

  931. marvel that

  932. I said

  933. to you,

  934. you must

  935. be born

  936. again.

  937. the wind

  938. blows where

  939. it wishes,

  940. and you

  941. hear its

  942. sound,

  943. but you

  944. do not

  945. know where

  946. it comes

  947. from or

  948. where it

  949. goes.

  950. So it

  951. is with

  952. everyone who

  953. is born

  954. of the

  955. spirit.

  956. This shows

  957. the utter

  958. inability of

  959. man to do

  960. anything in

  961. order to

  962. enter the

  963. kingdom of

  964. God

  965. on his

  966. own.

  967. Obviously,

  968. you cannot

  969. be born

  970. when you

  971. are old,

  972. and you

  973. cannot

  974. enter your

  975. mother's

  976. womb again

  977. and be

  978. reborn.

  979. There is

  980. nothing in

  981. your power

  982. or ability

  983. that you

  984. can do

  985. to be

  986. born again.

  987. There is

  988. a reason

  989. why Jesus

  990. uses these

  991. specific

  992. words and

  993. these specific

  994. illustrations in

  995. talking about

  996. regeneration.

  997. You had

  998. nothing to do

  999. with your

  1000. first birth,

  1001. and you

  1002. cannot have

  1003. anything to

  1004. do with

  1005. your second

  1006. birth from

  1007. above.

  1008. On this

  1009. effectual

  1010. calling,

  1011. which must

  1012. be initiated

  1013. by God,

  1014. Philip

  1015. Ryken,

  1016. the current

  1017. president of

  1018. Wheaton

  1019. College,

  1020. writes,

  1021. What makes

  1022. this illustration

  1023. especially

  1024. effective is

  1025. the fact

  1026. that in

  1027. the Greek

  1028. language,

  1029. wind and

  1030. breath and

  1031. spirit are

  1032. all the same

  1033. word,

  1034. pneuma.

  1035. The spirit

  1036. is the breath

  1037. of God,

  1038. whose influence

  1039. is like the

  1040. wind.

  1041. No one can

  1042. control the

  1043. wind or even

  1044. see it,

  1045. yet its

  1046. effects are

  1047. obvious wherever

  1048. it blows.

  1049. So it is

  1050. with the

  1051. Holy Spirit.

  1052. No one can

  1053. control his

  1054. gracious influences.

  1055. No one can

  1056. see when he

  1057. first slips

  1058. into a

  1059. sinner's

  1060. heart.

  1061. The

  1062. regenerating,

  1063. life-giving

  1064. work of the

  1065. spirit is

  1066. up to

  1067. the sovereignty

  1068. of God.

  1069. Close quote.

  1070. God

  1071. This

  1072. effectual

  1073. calling,

  1074. this

  1075. irresistible

  1076. grace,

  1077. is what

  1078. Acts 16,

  1079. 14 alludes

  1080. to when it

  1081. tells of

  1082. Lydia's

  1083. conversion.

  1084. For it

  1085. says God

  1086. opened her

  1087. heart as

  1088. the gospel

  1089. was being

  1090. preached by

  1091. Paul.

  1092. Lydia didn't

  1093. open her

  1094. own heart.

  1095. It clearly

  1096. says God

  1097. opened her

  1098. heart.

  1099. She couldn't

  1100. have opened

  1101. her own

  1102. heart.

  1103. She was

  1104. dead in her

  1105. trespasses and

  1106. sins.

  1107. God

  1108. effectually

  1109. through the

  1110. gospel called

  1111. her, opened

  1112. her heart, and

  1113. gave her new

  1114. birth.

  1115. And it is

  1116. this that

  1117. John 1, 13

  1118. refers to when

  1119. speaking of the

  1120. children of God

  1121. where it says

  1122. they were born

  1123. not of blood

  1124. nor of the

  1125. will of man

  1126. or the

  1127. flesh but

  1128. of God.

  1129. Christ is

  1130. the founder

  1131. of our faith

  1132. because He

  1133. alone is

  1134. the giver

  1135. of the

  1136. new birth.

  1137. Now we

  1138. have reached

  1139. our second

  1140. main heading

  1141. for this

  1142. morning and

  1143. that is

  1144. perfecter of

  1145. our faith.

  1146. And for the

  1147. sake of time

  1148. I will give

  1149. you the two

  1150. subheadings and

  1151. try to move

  1152. quickly.

  1153. So Christ

  1154. is the

  1155. perfecter of

  1156. our faith in

  1157. that He has

  1158. perfectly

  1159. accomplished

  1160. His work.

  1161. He has

  1162. perfectly

  1163. accomplished

  1164. His work

  1165. and the

  1166. second

  1167. subheading

  1168. that He

  1169. will

  1170. complete

  1171. the work

  1172. He began

  1173. in us.

  1174. He will

  1175. complete the

  1176. work that

  1177. He began

  1178. in us.

  1179. Jesus came

  1180. to this

  1181. world with

  1182. a purpose.

  1183. He did

  1184. so to

  1185. accomplish

  1186. a work.

  1187. He came

  1188. to give

  1189. His life

  1190. a ransom

  1191. for many.

  1192. And it is

  1193. here that we

  1194. encounter the

  1195. doctrine of

  1196. grace called

  1197. limited

  1198. atonement

  1199. or particular

  1200. redemption.

  1201. It is the

  1202. belief of

  1203. some that

  1204. Christ died

  1205. to pay for

  1206. the sins of

  1207. every single

  1208. person who

  1209. has ever

  1210. and will

  1211. ever live.

  1212. That He has

  1213. bore the

  1214. wrath for

  1215. the sins of

  1216. Judas who

  1217. is now

  1218. spending

  1219. eternity in

  1220. hell as

  1221. He has

  1222. bore the

  1223. wrath for

  1224. the sins

  1225. of Peter

  1226. who is

  1227. now in

  1228. glory in

  1229. the presence

  1230. of the

  1231. Lord.

  1232. And though

  1233. I don't

  1234. have time

  1235. to get

  1236. into detail

  1237. about it,

  1238. I will

  1239. just say

  1240. this quickly

  1241. because some

  1242. of you may

  1243. be thinking,

  1244. well,

  1245. what about

  1246. those texts

  1247. that say

  1248. that He took

  1249. away the

  1250. sins of

  1251. the world,

  1252. of the

  1253. whole world?

  1254. Well,

  1255. those are

  1256. to be

  1257. understood

  1258. under their

  1259. particular

  1260. and respective

  1261. contexts,

  1262. which we

  1263. don't have

  1264. time to

  1265. examine this

  1266. morning.

  1267. So let me

  1268. just give you

  1269. quickly some

  1270. texts that I

  1271. believe help

  1272. repudiate those

  1273. notions.

  1274. Mark 10

  1275. 45 says,

  1276. For even the

  1277. Son of Man

  1278. came not to

  1279. be served,

  1280. but to serve,

  1281. and to give

  1282. His life a

  1283. ransom for

  1284. many.

  1285. You see

  1286. that?

  1287. For many.

  1288. Not for all,

  1289. for many.

  1290. Matthew 22

  1291. 14.

  1292. For many

  1293. are called,

  1294. but few

  1295. are chosen.

  1296. Hebrews 9

  1297. 27 to 28.

  1298. And just

  1299. as it is

  1300. appointed for

  1301. men to

  1302. die once,

  1303. and after

  1304. that the

  1305. judgment,

  1306. so Christ,

  1307. having been

  1308. offered once

  1309. to bear the

  1310. sins of

  1311. many,

  1312. will appear

  1313. a second

  1314. time.

  1315. Once again,

  1316. many,

  1317. not all.

  1318. And one

  1319. last one.

  1320. Revelation 5

  1321. 9 says,

  1322. Worthy are

  1323. you to

  1324. take the

  1325. scroll and

  1326. to open

  1327. its seals,

  1328. for you

  1329. were slain,

  1330. and by your

  1331. blood you

  1332. ransomed

  1333. people for

  1334. God from

  1335. every tribe

  1336. and language

  1337. and people

  1338. and nation.

  1339. This is

  1340. talking

  1341. particularly

  1342. about the

  1343. redemptive

  1344. work.

  1345. And it

  1346. speaks and

  1347. it says

  1348. that he

  1349. ransomed

  1350. people

  1351. from

  1352. every

  1353. tribe and

  1354. language and

  1355. people and

  1356. nation.

  1357. It does not

  1358. say that he

  1359. ransomed every

  1360. tribe and

  1361. people and

  1362. language and

  1363. nation.

  1364. We see that

  1365. the extent of

  1366. the atonement

  1367. here is

  1368. explicitly

  1369. limited.

  1370. Right here in

  1371. the pages of

  1372. Scripture.

  1373. Now those

  1374. who do not

  1375. hold to the

  1376. Calvinistic view

  1377. would have to

  1378. say and

  1379. believe that

  1380. Christ paid

  1381. the full

  1382. price for

  1383. the sense of

  1384. humanity

  1385. without actually

  1386. securing

  1387. anyone's

  1388. salvation

  1389. definitively.

  1390. Only a

  1391. possibility of

  1392. salvation.

  1393. salvation.

  1394. So you

  1395. see friends,

  1396. while Calvinism

  1397. limits the

  1398. extent of

  1399. the atonement

  1400. by saying

  1401. that Christ

  1402. died for a

  1403. specific people

  1404. only, those

  1405. being the

  1406. elect, and

  1407. paid an

  1408. actual price

  1409. for an

  1410. actual people,

  1411. the non-Calvinist

  1412. view limits the

  1413. effect of the

  1414. atonement.

  1415. Because they

  1416. cannot say that

  1417. Christ died to

  1418. perfectly secure

  1419. the salvation of

  1420. anybody.

  1421. But to the

  1422. Calvinist, in

  1423. regards to the

  1424. effect of the

  1425. atonement, the

  1426. accomplished work

  1427. of Christ on the

  1428. cross, we

  1429. believe this, as

  1430. John Flavel, a

  1431. 1600s Puritan,

  1432. puts it, and I

  1433. quote, he

  1434. finished it

  1435. completely and

  1436. fully.

  1437. All that was to

  1438. be done by way

  1439. of meritorious

  1440. redemption is

  1441. fully done.

  1442. No hand can

  1443. come after

  1444. this.

  1445. His angels can

  1446. add nothing to

  1447. it.

  1448. That is

  1449. perfectly to

  1450. which nothing is

  1451. wanting and to

  1452. which nothing can

  1453. be added.

  1454. Such is the

  1455. work which

  1456. our Lord

  1457. Jesus Christ

  1458. finished.

  1459. finished.

  1460. Whatever the

  1461. law demanded is

  1462. perfectly paid.

  1463. Whatever a

  1464. sinner needs is

  1465. perfectly obtained

  1466. and purchased.

  1467. Nothing can be

  1468. added to what

  1469. he had done.

  1470. He put the

  1471. last hand to

  1472. it when he

  1473. said, it

  1474. is finished.

  1475. Close quote.

  1476. Which arrives

  1477. us at the

  1478. final and

  1479. glorious doctrine

  1480. of grace

  1481. called the

  1482. perseverance of

  1483. the saints.

  1484. The perseverance

  1485. of the saints.

  1486. Otherwise known

  1487. as preserving

  1488. grace.

  1489. The Calvinist

  1490. affirms that

  1491. once saved,

  1492. always saved.

  1493. Because he who

  1494. began a good

  1495. work in you

  1496. will bring it

  1497. to completion

  1498. at the day of

  1499. Jesus Christ.

  1500. As we are told

  1501. in Philippians

  1502. 1, chapter 1,

  1503. verse 6.

  1504. And the Lord

  1505. tells us in

  1506. John 6, 39,

  1507. And this is the

  1508. will of him

  1509. who sent me,

  1510. that I should

  1511. lose nothing

  1512. of all that

  1513. he has given

  1514. me, but

  1515. raise it up

  1516. on the last

  1517. day.

  1518. We cannot

  1519. be plucked

  1520. out of his

  1521. hands, for

  1522. God is a

  1523. good father,

  1524. and our

  1525. Lord is a

  1526. good shepherd,

  1527. who will not

  1528. let one of

  1529. his sheep

  1530. go astray.

  1531. And because

  1532. Christ is

  1533. almighty,

  1534. who lives

  1535. to intercede

  1536. for us,

  1537. and as

  1538. Hebrews 7, 25

  1539. so powerfully

  1540. puts it,

  1541. he is able

  1542. to save to

  1543. the uttermost

  1544. those who

  1545. draw near to

  1546. God through

  1547. him, since

  1548. he always

  1549. lives to

  1550. make intercession

  1551. for them.

  1552. And my dear

  1553. friends,

  1554. Christ will

  1555. not and

  1556. cannot fail

  1557. at his

  1558. intercessory

  1559. prayer.

  1560. And as

  1561. J.I.

  1562. Packer

  1563. puts it,

  1564. your faith

  1565. will not

  1566. fail while

  1567. God sustains

  1568. it.

  1569. You are not

  1570. strong enough

  1571. to fall

  1572. away while

  1573. God is

  1574. resolved to

  1575. hold you.

  1576. Close quote.

  1577. And as to

  1578. the importance

  1579. of this

  1580. doctrine of

  1581. preserving

  1582. grace,

  1583. Spurgeon

  1584. so

  1585. determinedly

  1586. writes,

  1587. and this

  1588. should be

  1589. on the

  1590. front of

  1591. your

  1592. bulletin,

  1593. quote,

  1594. if one

  1595. dear saint

  1596. of God

  1597. had perished,

  1598. so might

  1599. all.

  1600. If one

  1601. of the

  1602. covenant

  1603. ones be

  1604. lost,

  1605. so may

  1606. all be.

  1607. And then

  1608. there is

  1609. no gospel

  1610. promise

  1611. true,

  1612. but the

  1613. Bible

  1614. is a

  1615. lie,

  1616. and there

  1617. is nothing

  1618. in it

  1619. worth

  1620. my

  1621. acceptance.

  1622. I will

  1623. be an

  1624. infidel

  1625. at once

  1626. when I

  1627. can believe

  1628. that a

  1629. saint of

  1630. God

  1631. can ever

  1632. finally

  1633. fall.

  1634. Close quote.

  1635. Jesus

  1636. Christ

  1637. is

  1638. preeminent.

  1639. He is

  1640. all and

  1641. in all.

  1642. He is

  1643. founder and

  1644. perfecter of

  1645. our faith.

  1646. Therefore,

  1647. let us lay

  1648. aside every

  1649. weight and

  1650. sin which

  1651. clings so

  1652. closely,

  1653. and let us

  1654. run with

  1655. endurance the

  1656. race that

  1657. is set

  1658. before us,

  1659. looking to

  1660. Jesus,

  1661. the founder

  1662. and perfecter

  1663. of our

  1664. faith.

  1665. Salvation

  1666. and glory

  1667. and power

  1668. belong to

  1669. our God.

  1670. And if you

  1671. have not yet

  1672. trusted in

  1673. him,

  1674. repent and

  1675. believe the

  1676. gospel of

  1677. our Lord and

  1678. Savior Jesus

  1679. Christ today.

  1680. Let's pray.

  1681. Amen.
