  1. All right, very good. Please take your copy of God Word out and turn to the book of Ecclesiastes.

  2. Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes chapter 2.

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  3. We've had some technical challenges as of late around here, so I imagine there'll be some fluctuation in the sound of my voice.

  4. A couple of weeks ago, the projector literally shook itself to death.

  5. And in the midst of all that time, also a piece of our soundboard, which I don't understand, went out, and it has been shipped away.

  6. And we are using a tiny little mini board back there right now, and I think the guys are all, there's a cluster trying to sort out what's happening with our sound this morning.

  7. At some point, we may just can it, and I'll yell a lot this morning.

  8. We're going to continue our study of Ecclesiastes today in chapter 2.

  9. But before we get there, before I read the text for this morning, I just want to remind you that this book is, in a sense, a sermon.

  10. In fact, the title Ecclesiastes is our Anglicanized version of the Latin Vulgate of the translation of the preacher.

  11. Quoholeth from Hebrew is where we get this idea, this Ecclesiastes.

  12. It's a sermon preached by the preacher.

  13. Most presume that the preacher is Solomon, but we don't know that for a fact,

  14. and so I'm going to maintain calling him the preacher throughout our study of this text.

  15. And he begins his sermon in chapter 1, verses 2 and 3 by saying,

  16. Vanity of vanities.

  17. Vanity of vanities.

  18. All is vanity.

  19. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun, that is, on the earth?

  20. And then the preacher gives us a personal biography of his search for gain under the sun.

  21. We see the beginning of this in verse 13 of chapter 1 and into 14.

  22. And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven.

  23. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.

  24. I have seen everything that is done under the sun.

  25. And behold, all this vanity or meaningless and a striving after wind.

  26. He begins the story of his search with a number of self-indulgent pleasures.

  27. These are his experiments in gain.

  28. He looks at the things that men seem to find satisfaction in in the world.

  29. And he picks up those things and he chases them out to their very end, only to find that they're all vain.

  30. They're all a chasing after the wind, that none of them are ultimate gain.

  31. And beloved, as we look at these things together, we need to recognize that there is no new thing.

  32. New forms of the same old things.

  33. And we need to let God's word speak to us about the things that we chase in this world to find pleasure and gain.

  34. So I'm going to read to you the first 11 verses of chapter 2.

  35. And this will be our text for some coming weeks.

  36. I don't know how many it will be, but we're going to kind of take it a piece at a time.

  37. So let me read to you chapter 2, beginning in verse 1.

  38. I said in my heart,

  39. Come now, I will test you with pleasure.

  40. Enjoy yourself.

  41. But behold, this was also vanity.

  42. I said of laughter, it is mad.

  43. And of pleasure, what use is it?

  44. I searched my heart how to cheer my body with wine,

  45. my heart still guiding me with wisdom,

  46. and how to lay hold on folly

  47. till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven

  48. during the few days of their life.

  49. I made great works.

  50. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.

  51. I made myself gardens and parks

  52. and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees.

  53. I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.

  54. I bought male and female slaves

  55. and had slaves who were born in my house.

  56. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks,

  57. more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem.

  58. I also gathered for myself silver and gold

  59. and the treasure of kings and provinces.

  60. I got singers, both men and women,

  61. and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.

  62. So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem.

  63. Also my wisdom remained with me,

  64. and whatever my eye desired, I did not keep from them.

  65. I kept my heart from no pleasure,

  66. for my heart found pleasure in all my toil,

  67. and this was my reward for all my toil.

  68. Then I considered all that my hands had done

  69. and the toil I had expended in doing it,

  70. and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind,

  71. and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

  72. This is God's word to us.

  73. It was written for His glory and our good,

  74. and we would all do well to listen to it

  75. in order to believe its promises

  76. and obey its commands.

  77. Now this morning my remarks on this text

  78. are going to be brief.

  79. For the sake of time, I've promised

  80. you'll be able to get to the Life Chain event at 1215,

  81. but also because I believe it's important

  82. for us to take some considerable time

  83. to consider this phrase in verse 2,

  84. I said of laughter, it is mad.

  85. We as American people have much time for leisure,

  86. much time for frivolity.

  87. We don't live in a place where we're concerned

  88. that we may be bombed on our way home.

  89. We don't live in a place where the ravages of disease run rampant.

  90. We typically live in a place that's fairly comfortable.

  91. And so for us to stop and consider

  92. what place does laughter have in our lives,

  93. I think it's important for us this morning.

  94. This is the preacher's first experiment

  95. and self-indulgent pleasure.

  96. Laughter.

  97. This word for laughter in Hebrew

  98. has a very broad and varied meaning to it.

  99. It means to play,

  100. to act clumsy,

  101. to joke,

  102. mock,

  103. deride,

  104. to make a laughing stock

  105. of an individual.

  106. It could be thought of as

  107. the pleasure of comedy.

  108. If there's a noun given to this pursuit

  109. that he goes into,

  110. the pleasure of comedy,

  111. or we could think of it as just general silliness.

  112. So it's an experiment with this type of thing

  113. that he picks up

  114. and he takes a look at

  115. and he runs it out

  116. and considers,

  117. is this a thing to be gained

  118. under the sun?

  119. Comedy is often

  120. an entertainment

  121. that many people use

  122. to make it through life.

  123. It could take the form of

  124. jokes that mask insecurities,

  125. the abuse of others

  126. for the sake of one's own esteem,

  127. countless wasted hours

  128. to numb boredom,

  129. and the making light of grievous sin

  130. in order to justify it.

  131. After all,

  132. something laughed at

  133. can't be something serious,

  134. can it?

  135. It is this type of laughter

  136. that the preacher calls mad.

  137. Mad in Hebrew

  138. does not refer

  139. to being out of one's mind.

  140. The late Old Testament theologian

  141. Derek Kidner says

  142. that it indicates

  143. moral perversity

  144. rather than mental oddity.

  145. He's saying that this is a thing

  146. not fitting to one

  147. who follows God.

  148. God.

  149. This makes no sense

  150. for the godly.

  151. So,

  152. it is improper

  153. or misplaced

  154. laughter.

  155. Now, as children,

  156. we all had,

  157. and probably

  158. even still have,

  159. some form of acquaintance

  160. that are always

  161. misplacing

  162. inappropriate jokes.

  163. Being silly

  164. at the wrong times.

  165. they just don't seem

  166. to know

  167. when to stop.

  168. In fact,

  169. I would define maturity

  170. just for the average individual.

  171. Not Christian maturity,

  172. but just maturity.

  173. Not somebody who

  174. no longer has fun,

  175. but they know

  176. when it's right and proper

  177. to have fun

  178. and when it's not

  179. okay to have fun.

  180. Some of you may be thinking

  181. of those people

  182. now in your own mind.

  183. You may be

  184. that person.

  185. But as the people of God,

  186. are we meant

  187. to laugh?

  188. We've already laughed

  189. some together

  190. this morning.

  191. Here,

  192. in Ecclesiastes,

  193. he seems to be very

  194. point blank about it though.

  195. Laughter is

  196. madness.

  197. So, we need to

  198. understand rightly.

  199. It's of course okay

  200. for us to laugh,

  201. but we need to do

  202. a bit of work

  203. to suss out

  204. what he means

  205. by this.

  206. What is the place?

  207. What is the proper use

  208. and proper place

  209. of laughter

  210. in our lives?

  211. After all,

  212. the preacher goes on

  213. to say in Ecclesiastes 3,

  214. 4,

  215. that there is a time

  216. to laugh.

  217. In Proverbs 31,

  218. 25,

  219. it is said

  220. of the excellent wife

  221. that she laughs

  222. at the time

  223. to come.

  224. You have likely

  225. heard the folk wisdom

  226. that laughter

  227. is the best medicine

  228. or maybe heard a story

  229. of someone

  230. who laughed

  231. themselves back

  232. to hell.

  233. I am incredibly

  234. thankful

  235. for my family

  236. for the laughter

  237. they bring

  238. to my life.

  239. I tend to be

  240. a bit of a dark cloud

  241. and they are

  242. rays of sunshine

  243. in my day.

  244. Apart from my wife

  245. and my two children,

  246. my home is a really

  247. dreary place.

  248. I don't need to be

  249. left there by myself

  250. for very long

  251. because they are

  252. constantly filling

  253. our home

  254. with laughter.

  255. This is one of the

  256. great blessings

  257. of children.

  258. Judah now is a little

  259. over three and a half

  260. months

  261. and maybe six,

  262. six to eight months

  263. ago,

  264. we learned that he

  265. knows how to cross

  266. his eyes and nobody

  267. taught him how to do

  268. that.

  269. He calls them crazy

  270. eyes.

  271. Judah, will you do

  272. crazy eyes for everybody?

  273. Will you stand up

  274. and do it?

  275. Stand up and do it.

  276. Will you?

  277. Okay.

  278. Going to be shy

  279. this morning?

  280. We discovered this

  281. at dinner one night

  282. where he said,

  283. look, crazy eyes.

  284. He crosses his eyes

  285. and he opens his mouth

  286. really wide.

  287. It's really,

  288. really cute.

  289. And we laughed

  290. and laughed

  291. and laughed

  292. and laughed

  293. as he did it

  294. over and over

  295. until we became

  296. concerned that they

  297. would stick that way

  298. and we made him

  299. stop.

  300. It was so precious.

  301. I still can think

  302. about it.

  303. It just brings me joy.

  304. Try to get him to do

  305. it for you individually

  306. later on.

  307. But healthy laughter

  308. is a timely laughter

  309. put in its proper place.

  310. Ecclesiastes 3, 4

  311. I'll reference again.

  312. Healthy laughter

  313. has its source

  314. in the goodness of God.

  315. Proverbs 31, 25

  316. Healthy laughter

  317. does not have

  318. as its source

  319. coarse joking.

  320. There's so much comedy

  321. in our day

  322. that is entirely inappropriate.

  323. Have you ever watched a show

  324. and found yourself

  325. laughing at something?

  326. You're going,

  327. I shouldn't be laughing at that.

  328. Stop watching such things.

  329. Stop laughing at such things.

  330. Ephesians 5, 4 says

  331. let there be no filthiness

  332. nor foolish talk

  333. nor crude joking.

  334. We ought not joke

  335. in that way

  336. and we ought not laugh

  337. at those who drew.

  338. But the trouble

  339. with laughter

  340. the madness of it

  341. is when we try

  342. to find our gain in it.

  343. When we look to frivolity

  344. for ultimate satisfaction

  345. we will come up lacking.

  346. We will say with the preacher

  347. laughter is meaningless.

  348. The preacher talks more

  349. in the book of Ecclesiastes

  350. about laughter.

  351. Turn with me

  352. a few pages over

  353. to Ecclesiastes chapter 7.

    Ecclesiastes 7 chapter mention

  354. Beginning in verse 2.

  355. It is better

  356. to go to the house

  357. of mourning

  358. than to go to the house

  359. of feasting.

  360. For this is the end

  361. of all mankind

  362. and the living

  363. will lay it

  364. to heart.

  365. Sorrow

  366. is better

  367. than laughter.

  368. For by sadness

  369. of face

  370. the heart

  371. is made glad.

  372. The heart

  373. of the wise

  374. is in the house

  375. of mourning

  376. but the heart

  377. of fools

  378. is in the house

  379. of mirth.

  380. It is better

  381. for a man

  382. to hear

  383. the rebuke

  384. of the wise

  385. than to hear

  386. the song

  387. of fools.

  388. For as the

  389. crackling

  390. of thorns

  391. under a pot

  392. so is the laughter

  393. of the fools.

  394. This

  395. is also

  396. vanity.

  397. It's sobering words

  398. that he's saying

  399. to us here.

  400. It's better

  401. to mourn

  402. than to laugh.

  403. It's better

  404. to be around

  405. people who

  406. are mourning.

  407. The house

  408. of mourning

  409. as was the

  410. constant

  411. and likely

  412. habit of visiting

  413. one who had

  414. somebody die

  415. in a household

  416. they would gather

  417. there at the house

  418. to pay their respects.

  419. This is the house

  420. of mourning

  421. a home in which

  422. someone has died.

  423. It's better

  424. to be there

  425. than to go

  426. to the place

  427. where feasting

  428. is taking place.

  429. It's better

  430. to have sorrow

  431. than laughter.

  432. He says

  433. by sadness

  434. of face

  435. the heart

  436. is made

  437. glad.

  438. Why?

  439. What is he

  440. talking about

  441. here?

  442. What he's saying

  443. is that for us

  444. to be around

  445. the reality

  446. of this life

  447. this once

  448. Eden

  449. the place

  450. in which we live

  451. that has been

  452. corrupted by sin

  453. and the major

  454. corruption

  455. the final

  456. corruptive work

  457. is death.

  458. To be around

  459. that and to be

  460. reminded

  461. that this is

  462. a place

  463. of lesser

  464. joy.

  465. That the house

  466. of mourning

  467. teaches us

  468. to be wise

  469. in the way

  470. we live

  471. and in the way

  472. we prepare

  473. to die.

  474. If you go to

  475. the house

  476. of feasting

  477. you go to

  478. a birthday

  479. party

  480. people never

  481. talk about

  482. the serious

  483. things.

  484. You never

  485. at a birthday

  486. party

  487. celebrate

  488. somebody's

  489. birth

  490. and also

  491. mourn

  492. their coming

  493. death.

  494. It's a reality

  495. that still exists

  496. but we don't

  497. talk about

  498. these things.

  499. It's light

  500. and it's

  501. jovial.

  502. Rather than

  503. being in a

  504. place where

  505. people say

  506. this is

  507. the reality

  508. of life

  509. someday

  510. like a

  511. vapor

  512. passes

  513. I will

  514. pass

  515. and do I

  516. live my

  517. life wisely

  518. now for

  519. the kingdom

  520. of God

  521. preparing

  522. myself

  523. for the

  524. coming

  525. day

  526. when I

  527. will die.

  528. Recall the

  529. preacher's

  530. conclusion

  531. in Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 12:13

  532. 12

  533. verse 13

  534. fear God

  535. understand

  536. who he

  537. is

  538. and his

  539. created

  540. order

  541. understand

  542. your place

  543. in that

  544. created

  545. order

  546. see yourself

  547. rightly

  548. as his

  549. creation

  550. made

  551. to worship

  552. him

  553. and the

  554. proper

  555. response

  556. of that

  557. is then

  558. the keeping

  559. of his

  560. commandments

  561. to recognize

  562. this

  563. the house

  564. of mourning

  565. is a benefit

  566. to us

  567. in that

  568. sorrow

  569. the sorrow

  570. of the heart

  571. that looks

  572. at this

  573. world

  574. and says

  575. it is

  576. broken

  577. serves us

  578. in this

  579. way

  580. so what

  581. do we do

  582. with the

  583. joy of

  584. the scripture

  585. because it's

  586. everywhere

  587. in the

  588. scripture

  589. one fantastic

  590. example

  591. psalm

  592. 34

  593. 8

  594. says

  595. oh

  596. taste

  597. and see

  598. that the

  599. lord

  600. is

  601. good

  602. blessed

  603. which is

  604. to say

  605. happy

  606. truly

  607. and

  608. lastingly

  609. happy

  610. is the

  611. man

  612. who

  613. takes

  614. refuge

  615. in

  616. him

  617. there's

  618. much

  619. language

  620. in the

  621. scripture

  622. about this

  623. I came

  624. across a

  625. fun article

  626. this week

  627. that asked

  628. the question

  629. what was

  630. Jonathan

  631. Edwards

  632. favorite

  633. word

  634. and this

  635. man

  636. had done

  637. quite a

  638. bit of

  639. studying

  640. to realize

  641. that it

  642. was

  643. the word

  644. joy

  645. or some

  646. variation

  647. of it

  648. to rightly

  649. see

  650. that the

  651. response

  652. of the

  653. Christian

  654. to the

  655. gospel

  656. of Jesus

  657. Christ

  658. is joy

  659. so we've

  660. got to

  661. make some

  662. reconciliation

  663. of all

  664. of this

  665. let me

  666. read to

  667. you the

  668. quote

  669. that's

  670. on the

  671. front of

  672. your

  673. bulletin

  674. this

  675. morning

  676. by

  677. Edwards

  678. he says

  679. God

  680. is the

  681. highest

  682. good

  683. of the

  684. reasonable

  685. creature

  686. the

  687. enjoyment

  688. of him

  689. is our

  690. proper

  691. and is

  692. the only

  693. happiness

  694. with which

  695. our souls

  696. can be

  697. satisfied

  698. to go

  699. to heaven

  700. fully

  701. to enjoy

  702. God

  703. is infinitely

  704. better

  705. than the

  706. most pleasant

  707. accommodations

  708. here

  709. better than

  710. fathers

  711. and mothers

  712. husbands

  713. wives

  714. or children

  715. or the

  716. company

  717. of any

  718. or all

  719. earthly

  720. friends

  721. these

  722. are but

  723. shadows

  724. but the

  725. enjoyment

  726. of God

  727. is the

  728. substance

  729. these

  730. are but

  731. scattered

  732. beams

  733. but God

  734. is the

  735. sun

  736. these

  737. are but

  738. streams

  739. but God

  740. is the

  741. fountain

  742. these

  743. are but

  744. drops

  745. but God

  746. is the

  747. ocean

  748. so recognize

  749. we look at

  750. psalm 34

  751. 8 and

  752. then hear

  753. what

  754. Edwards

  755. has to

  756. say about

  757. the high

  758. good of

  759. enjoyment

  760. in God

  761. is that

  762. for us

  763. as we

  764. walk in

  765. this

  766. world

  767. and we're

  768. sorrowful

  769. in it

  770. we see

  771. the broken

  772. nature

  773. of it

  774. we see

  775. this

  776. once

  777. eaten

  778. place

  779. in which

  780. we live

  781. that we

  782. can be

  783. blessed

  784. we can

  785. be happy

  786. truly

  787. and

  788. lastingly

  789. happy

  790. because

  791. we take

  792. refuge

  793. in

  794. God

  795. because

  796. we take

  797. refuge

  798. in the

  799. promises

  800. of God

  801. to us

  802. in Christ

  803. that

  804. happy

  805. person

  806. the

  807. one

  808. who

  809. laughs

  810. out

  811. of

  812. joy

  813. because

  814. of

  815. their

  816. happiness

  817. does

  818. so

  819. because

  820. of

  821. the

  822. goodness

  823. of

  824. God

  825. in

  826. Christ

  827. we

  828. rest

  829. from

  830. our

  831. sorrow

  832. in

  833. him

  834. most

  835. of

  836. you

  837. are

  838. probably

  839. familiar

  840. with

  841. Jesus

  842. title

  843. the

  844. man

  845. of

  846. sorrows

  847. and this

  848. comes from

  849. Isaiah

  850. 53

  851. 3

  852. which

  853. reads

  854. he

  855. was

  856. despised

  857. and

  858. rejected

  859. by

  860. men

  861. a

  862. man

  863. of

  864. sorrows

  865. and

  866. acquainted

  867. with

  868. grief

  869. and

  870. as

  871. one

  872. from

  873. whom

  874. men

  875. hide

  876. their

  877. faces

  878. he

  879. was

  880. despised

  881. and

  882. we

  883. esteemed

  884. him

  885. not

  886. and

  887. then

  888. verse

  889. 4

  890. says

  891. surely

  892. he

  893. has

  894. borne

  895. our

  896. griefs

  897. and

  898. carried

  899. our

  900. sorrows

  901. yet

  902. we

  903. esteemed

  904. him

  905. stricken

  906. smitten

  907. by

  908. God

  909. and

  910. afflicted

  911. John

  912. Calvin

  913. wrote

  914. verse

  915. 4

  916. Christ

  917. has

  918. put

  919. on

  920. our

  921. feelings

  922. along

  923. with

  924. our

  925. flesh

  926. and

  927. as

  928. people

  929. made

  930. aware

  931. of

  932. the

  933. state

  934. of

  935. this

  936. once

  937. eaten

  938. in

  939. which

  940. we

  941. live

  942. we

  943. are

  944. apt

  945. to

  946. be

  947. sorrowful

  948. rightly

  949. but

  950. we

  951. can

  952. err

  953. toward

  954. hopelessness

  955. as

  956. we

  957. are

  958. people

  959. of

  960. the

  961. cross

  962. and

  963. we

  964. consider

  965. the

  966. cross

  967. the

  968. darkest

  969. moment

  970. in

  971. all

  972. of

  973. history

  974. we

  975. can

  976. be

  977. apt

  978. to

  979. that

  980. we

  981. can

  982. err

  983. in

  984. that

  985. way

  986. to

  987. be

  988. hopeless

  989. to

  990. see

  991. the

  992. brokenness

  993. of

  994. the

  995. world

  996. and

  997. to

  998. see

  999. the

  1000. great

  1001. high

  1002. climax

  1003. of

  1004. the

  1005. brokenness

  1006. of

  1007. the

  1008. world

  1009. the

  1010. death

  1011. of

  1012. the

  1013. Savior

  1014. Jesus

  1015. Christ

  1016. we

  1017. can

  1018. be

  1019. hopeless

  1020. if

  1021. we

  1022. fail

  1023. to

  1024. look

  1025. beyond

  1026. the

  1027. cross

  1028. if

  1029. we

  1030. fail

  1031. to

  1032. remember

  1033. on

  1034. the

  1035. third

  1036. day

  1037. Jesus

  1038. rose

  1039. from

  1040. the

  1041. grave

  1042. an

  1043. old

  1044. Latin

  1045. phrase

  1046. says

  1047. post

  1048. tenebrous

  1049. lux

  1050. which

  1051. means

  1052. after

  1053. darkness

  1054. light

  1055. if

  1056. we

  1057. fail

  1058. to

  1059. remember

  1060. the

  1061. light

  1062. of the

  1063. resurrection

  1064. the

  1065. death

  1066. of

  1067. the

  1068. cross

  1069. leaves

  1070. us

  1071. with

  1072. no

  1073. hope

  1074. at

  1075. all

  1076. John

  1077. says

  1078. of

  1079. Jesus

  1080. Christ

  1081. in

  1082. John

  1083. 1

  1084. 5

  1085. the

  1086. light

  1087. shines

  1088. in

  1089. the

  1090. darkness

  1091. and

  1092. the

  1093. darkness

  1094. has

  1095. not

  1096. overcome

  1097. it

  1098. so

  1099. as

  1100. followers

  1101. of

  1102. Jesus

  1103. Christ

  1104. we

  1105. need

  1106. to

  1107. recognize

  1108. that

  1109. this

  1110. broken

  1111. world

  1112. in

  1113. which

  1114. we

  1115. walk

  1116. will

  1117. rightly

  1118. bring

  1119. us

  1120. sorrow

  1121. we

  1122. know

  1123. what

  1124. this

  1125. world

  1126. was

  1127. meant

  1128. to

  1129. be

  1130. we

  1131. have

  1132. had

  1133. this

  1134. restored

  1135. ability

  1136. to

  1137. love

  1138. and

  1139. to

  1140. worship

  1141. God

  1142. and

  1143. be

  1144. brought

  1145. into

  1146. relationship

  1147. with

  1148. him

  1149. and

  1150. everything

  1151. around

  1152. us

  1153. is

  1154. spiraling

  1155. down

  1156. to

  1157. rightly

  1158. bring

  1159. us

  1160. sorrow

  1161. but

  1162. we

  1163. have

  1164. great

  1165. reason

  1166. for

  1167. great

  1168. joy

  1169. beyond

  1170. it

  1171. in

  1172. the

  1173. goodness

  1174. of

  1175. God

  1176. to

  1177. us

  1178. in

  1179. Christ

  1180. so

  1181. we

  1182. must

  1183. walk

  1184. wisely

  1185. we

  1186. must

  1187. consider

  1188. how

  1189. we

  1190. are

  1191. to

  1192. spend

  1193. our

  1194. time

  1195. are

  1196. we

  1197. a

  1198. people

  1199. entertained

  1200. by the

  1201. frivolity

  1202. of the

  1203. world

  1204. or are

  1205. we

  1206. a

  1207. people

  1208. who

  1209. fear

  1210. God

  1211. and keep

  1212. his

  1213. commandments

  1214. are we

  1215. a

  1216. people

  1217. who

  1218. live

  1219. for

  1220. today

  1221. in the

  1222. momentary

  1223. fleeting

  1224. joy

  1225. of

  1226. today

  1227. or are

  1228. we

  1229. a

  1230. people

  1231. who

  1232. live

  1233. for

  1234. eternity

  1235. and in the

  1236. coming weeks

  1237. I'm going to read

  1238. to you

  1239. probably a

  1240. fair amount

  1241. from a book

  1242. called

  1243. the pilgrim's

  1244. progress

  1245. progress

  1246. I hope

  1247. as I say

  1248. that title

  1249. you're very

  1250. familiar

  1251. with this

  1252. I want

  1253. you

  1254. as a

  1255. person

  1256. of Christ

  1257. to read

  1258. the word

  1259. of Christ

  1260. more than

  1261. anything

  1262. else

  1263. absolutely

  1264. wear the

  1265. pages of

  1266. your scripture

  1267. thin

  1268. if you're

  1269. going to

  1270. read another

  1271. book

  1272. this is the

  1273. one

  1274. I think

  1275. you should

  1276. read

  1277. I know

  1278. many of

  1279. you are

  1280. not

  1281. readers

  1282. read

  1283. these

  1284. two

  1285. well

  1286. reading

  1287. Bunyan

  1288. and reading

  1289. this story

  1290. which is an

  1291. allegory

  1292. of the

  1293. journey

  1294. of a

  1295. character

  1296. called

  1297. Christian

  1298. to the

  1299. celestial

  1300. city

  1301. is much

  1302. like

  1303. reading

  1304. the

  1305. scripture

  1306. as it

  1307. is just

  1308. full

  1309. and full

  1310. of

  1311. quotes

  1312. from it

  1313. as we

  1314. look at

  1315. chapter 2

  1316. I'm going

  1317. to drive

  1318. you to

  1319. I'm going

  1320. to pull

  1321. you into

  1322. a bit

  1323. of the

  1324. story

  1325. where

  1326. Christian

  1327. and his

  1328. travel mate

  1329. at the

  1330. time

  1331. faithful

  1332. into a

  1333. place

  1334. called

  1335. Vanity

  1336. Fair

  1337. where

  1338. all of

  1339. the

  1340. things

  1341. the

  1342. world

  1343. has

  1344. to

  1345. offer

  1346. is

  1347. there

  1348. being

  1349. sold

  1350. but before

  1351. we get

  1352. that I want

  1353. to read

  1354. you a

  1355. story

  1356. when

  1357. Christian

  1358. goes to

  1359. the

  1360. house

  1361. of

  1362. interpreter

  1363. it's

  1364. very

  1365. early

  1366. in

  1367. his

  1368. Christian

  1369. journey

  1370. and

  1371. there

  1372. he's

  1373. taught

  1374. many

  1375. of

  1376. the

  1377. basic

  1378. things

  1379. of

  1380. Christian

  1381. faith

  1382. and

  1383. there's

  1384. this

  1385. wonderful

  1386. little

  1387. interchange

  1388. as they're

  1389. in this

  1390. house

  1391. of the

  1392. interpreter

  1393. looking

  1394. at

  1395. scenes

  1396. and

  1397. the

  1398. interpreter

  1399. is

  1400. interpreting

  1401. for him

  1402. what

  1403. these

  1404. things

  1405. mean

  1406. and so

  1407. I read

  1408. then I

  1409. saw in

  1410. my dream

  1411. that the

  1412. interpreter

  1413. took

  1414. Christian

  1415. by the

  1416. hand

  1417. and led

  1418. him

  1419. into a

  1420. place

  1421. where

  1422. was

  1423. a

  1424. fire

  1425. burning

  1426. against

  1427. a

  1428. wall

  1429. that is

  1430. not the

  1431. right

  1432. page

  1433. I'm

  1434. so

  1435. sorry

  1436. that is

  1437. also

  1438. a

  1439. really

  1440. good

  1441. part

  1442. of the

  1443. interpreter

  1444. singing

  1445. I

  1446. bookmarked

  1447. it

  1448. and I

  1449. missed my

  1450. bookmark

  1451. by a

  1452. page

  1453. all right

  1454. I

  1455. saw

  1456. moreover

  1457. in my

  1458. dream

  1459. that the

  1460. interpreter

  1461. took him

  1462. by the

  1463. hand

  1464. and had

  1465. him

  1466. into a

  1467. little

  1468. room

  1469. where sat

  1470. two

  1471. children

  1472. each

  1473. one

  1474. in

  1475. his

  1476. chair

  1477. the

  1478. name

  1479. of

  1480. the

  1481. eldest

  1482. was

  1483. passion

  1484. and the

  1485. name

  1486. of

  1487. the

  1488. other

  1489. patience

  1490. passion

  1491. seemed

  1492. to be

  1493. much

  1494. discontented

  1495. but

  1496. patience

  1497. was

  1498. very

  1499. quiet

  1500. then

  1501. Christian

  1502. asked

  1503. what is

  1504. the

  1505. reason

  1506. of

  1507. the

  1508. discontent

  1509. of

  1510. passion

  1511. interpreter

  1512. says

  1513. the

  1514. governor

  1515. of

  1516. them

  1517. would

  1518. have

  1519. him

  1520. stay

  1521. for

  1522. his

  1523. best

  1524. things

  1525. till

  1526. the

  1527. beginning

  1528. of

  1529. next

  1530. year

  1531. but

  1532. he

  1533. will

  1534. have

  1535. all

  1536. now

  1537. but

  1538. patience

  1539. is

  1540. willing

  1541. to

  1542. wait

  1543. then

  1544. I

  1545. saw

  1546. that

  1547. one

  1548. came

  1549. to

  1550. passion

  1551. and

  1552. brought

  1553. him

  1554. a

  1555. bag

  1556. of

  1557. treasure

  1558. and

  1559. poured

  1560. it

  1561. down

  1562. at

  1563. his

  1564. feet

  1565. the

  1566. which

  1567. he

  1568. took

  1569. up

  1570. and

  1571. rejoiced

  1572. therein

  1573. !

  1574. and

  1575. withal

  1576. laughed

  1577. patience

  1578. to

  1579. scorn

  1580. but

  1581. I

  1582. beheld

  1583. but

  1584. a

  1585. while

  1586. and

  1587. he

  1588. had

  1589. lavished

  1590. all

  1591. away

  1592. and

  1593. had

  1594. nothing

  1595. left

  1596. him

  1597. but

  1598. rags

  1599. and

  1600. Christian

  1601. says

  1602. expound

  1603. this

  1604. matter

  1605. more

  1606. fully

  1607. to

  1608. me

  1609. interpreter

  1610. responds

  1611. these

  1612. two

  1613. lads

  1614. are

  1615. figures

  1616. passion

  1617. of

  1618. the

  1619. men

  1620. of

  1621. this

  1622. world

  1623. and

  1624. patience

  1625. of

  1626. the

  1627. men

  1628. of

  1629. that

  1630. which

  1631. is

  1632. to

  1633. come

  1634. as

  1635. here

  1636. thou

  1637. seest

  1638. passion

  1639. will

  1640. have

  1641. all

  1642. now

  1643. this

  1644. year

  1645. that

  1646. is

  1647. to

  1648. say

  1649. in

  1650. this

  1651. world

  1652. so

  1653. are

  1654. the

  1655. men

  1656. of

  1657. this

  1658. world

  1659. they

  1660. must

  1661. have

  1662. all

  1663. their

  1664. good

  1665. things

  1666. now

  1667. they

  1668. cannot

  1669. stay

  1670. till

  1671. the

  1672. next

  1673. year

  1674. that

  1675. is

  1676. until

  1677. the

  1678. next

  1679. world

  1680. for

  1681. their

  1682. portion

  1683. of

  1684. good

  1685. that

  1686. proverb

  1687. a

  1688. bird

  1689. in

  1690. the

  1691. hand

  1692. is

  1693. worth

  1694. two

  1695. in

  1696. the

  1697. bush

  1698. is

  1699. of

  1700. more

  1701. authority

  1702. with

  1703. them

  1704. than

  1705. all

  1706. the

  1707. divine

  1708. testimonies

  1709. of

  1710. the

  1711. good

  1712. of

  1713. the

  1714. world

  1715. to

  1716. come

  1717. but

  1718. as

  1719. thou

  1720. sawst

  1721. that

  1722. he

  1723. had

  1724. quickly

  1725. lavished

  1726. all

  1727. away

  1728. and

  1729. had

  1730. presently

  1731. left

  1732. him

  1733. nothing

  1734. but

  1735. rags

  1736. so

  1737. will

  1738. it

  1739. be

  1740. with

  1741. all

  1742. such

  1743. men

  1744. at

  1745. the

  1746. end

  1747. of

  1748. this

  1749. world

  1750. Christian

  1751. says

  1752. now I

  1753. see

  1754. that

  1755. patience

  1756. has

  1757. the

  1758. best

  1759. wisdom

  1760. and

  1761. that

  1762. upon

  1763. many

  1764. accounts

  1765. first

  1766. because

  1767. he

  1768. stays

  1769. for

  1770. the

  1771. best

  1772. things

  1773. and

  1774. second

  1775. also

  1776. because

  1777. he

  1778. will

  1779. have

  1780. the

  1781. glory

  1782. of

  1783. his

  1784. when

  1785. the

  1786. other

  1787. has

  1788. nothing

  1789. but

  1790. rags

  1791. interpreter

  1792. says

  1793. nay

  1794. you

  1795. may

  1796. add

  1797. another

  1798. to

  1799. wit

  1800. the

  1801. glory

  1802. of

  1803. the

  1804. next

  1805. world

  1806. will

  1807. never

  1808. wear

  1809. out

  1810. but

  1811. these

  1812. are

  1813. suddenly

  1814. gone

  1815. therefore

  1816. passion

  1817. had

  1818. not

  1819. so

  1820. much

  1821. a

  1822. reason

  1823. to

  1824. laugh

  1825. at

  1826. patience

  1827. because

  1828. he

  1829. had

  1830. his

  1831. good

  1832. things

  1833. first

  1834. as

  1835. patience

  1836. will

  1837. have

  1838. to

  1839. laugh

  1840. at

  1841. passion

  1842. because

  1843. he

  1844. had

  1845. his

  1846. best

  1847. things

  1848. last

  1849. for

  1850. first

  1851. must

  1852. give

  1853. place

  1854. to

  1855. last

  1856. because

  1857. last

  1858. must

  1859. have

  1860. his

  1861. time

  1862. to

  1863. come

  1864. but

  1865. last

  1866. gives

  1867. place

  1868. to

  1869. nothing

  1870. for

  1871. there

  1872. is

  1873. not

  1874. another

  1875. to

  1876. succeed

  1877. he

  1878. therefore

  1879. that

  1880. half

  1881. his

  1882. portion

  1883. first

  1884. need

  1885. to

  1886. have

  1887. to

  1888. spend

  1889. it

  1890. but

  1891. he

  1892. that

  1893. hath

  1894. his

  1895. portion

  1896. last

  1897. must

  1898. have

  1899. it

  1900. lastingly

  1901. I love

  1902. that

  1903. sentence

  1904. therefore

  1905. it is

  1906. said

  1907. of him

  1908. in thy

  1909. lifetime

  1910. receivest

  1911. thy

  1912. good

  1913. things

  1914. and

  1915. likewise

  1916. Lazarus

  1917. evil

  1918. things

  1919. but

  1920. now

  1921. he

  1922. is

  1923. comforted

  1924. and

  1925. thou

  1926. art

  1927. tormented

  1928. !

  1929. Christian

  1930. says

  1931. then

  1932. I

  1933. perceive

  1934. !

  1935. it is

  1936. not

  1937. best

  1938. to

  1939. covet

  1940. things

  1941. that

  1942. are

  1943. now

  1944. but

  1945. to

  1946. wait

  1947. for

  1948. things

  1949. to

  1950. come

  1951. interpreter

  1952. responds

  1953. you

  1954. say

  1955. truth

  1956. for

  1957. the

  1958. things

  1959. that

  1960. are

  1961. seen

  1962. are

  1963. temporal

  1964. but

  1965. the

  1966. things

  1967. that

  1968. are

  1969. not

  1970. seen

  1971. are

  1972. eternal

  1973. let's

  1974. pray

  1975. together

  1976. let's
