  1. From their perception, France is a Christian nation we know much better.

  2. ! Christianity is viewed so often as a political ideology by those in the East.

  3. ! And it's important for us to stop and to consider tragedies.

  4. So why did we not do it last Sunday?

  5. When do we allow current events to interrupt our exposition of the Scripture?

  6. Because, to be quite frank, we could do that on any given Sunday.

  7. I could sit around during the week and just pay attention to what's being spoken about in social media.

  8. And pay attention to the current events.

  9. And there would always be something that would come in and would interrupt working through the Scripture.

  10. It seems to me that we would tend to address these things in the same way again and again and again,

  11. as we'll do this morning.

  12. Just to give you some idea of this, and I'm not belittling the tragedy that happened in France by any stretch of the imagination,

  13. but just to give you an idea of terrorism.

  14. What's happened this year?

  15. Terrorist attacks just this year.

  16. Interestingly, you can access the Global Terrorism Database.

  17. Oh, the power of the Internet.

  18. And find that in January 3rd through January 7th of this year,

  19. more than 2,000 Nigerians were killed by Boko Haram militants.

  20. January 25th, more than 67 in the Philippines were killed by Islamic freedom fighters.

  21. January 30th, another 60 in Pakistan by the Taliban.

  22. The total just in January was more than 2,355 people worldwide killed by terrorists.

  23. I've got a whole list of them here.

  24. I'll give you a couple of other examples.

  25. These are the big numbered ones.

  26. February 4th, more than 91 in Cameroon.

  27. These are all Islamic terrorist groups.

  28. March 20th, 137 in Yemen.

  29. April 1st, more than 147 in Kenya.

  30. June 25th, 146 in Syria.

  31. June 26th, 70 in Somalia.

  32. July 1st, 145 in Nigeria.

  33. July 17th, 180 in Iraq.

  34. September 20th, 145 in Nigeria.

  35. October 10th, 102 in Turkey.

  36. October 31st, 224 in Egypt.

  37. And I am skipping over even months.

  38. These are the big numbers, the ones that stand out as you scroll down the list.

  39. Since the attack on November 13th.

  40. So beginning that next Saturday, November 14th, up until yesterday, an additional 102 people have died from terrorist attacks.

  41. So, what causes us to stop?

  42. What bears enough weight to cause us to stop?

  43. And I think this Sunday is particularly valuable to do so because this particular attack has really stuck.

  44. Maybe that's because it's gotten so much media coverage.

  45. It's probably gotten so much media coverage because France has been an ally of ours.

  46. Because they're seen as a Western country.

  47. Because it was an attack, at very least, on the political ideology that Muslims, radical Muslims, attach to Christianity.

  48. Maybe all these reasons are why.

  49. I don't really know why.

  50. But it certainly stuck in our consciousness, hasn't it?

  51. We stopped and we paid attention.

  52. It was on every media outlet.

  53. It was difficult to miss.

  54. While you may have missed most or all of the ones that I just mentioned, you would have had to go look for those statistics.

  55. So, here we have this one.

  56. And I think it's important and valuable for us to consider it together.

  57. Now, just as a brief side note, the Internet is a pretty amazing tool, isn't it?

  58. And the Internet has given all of us a voice.

  59. What an amazing thing that we can put out there on the World Wide Web, what we think about a particular issue.

  60. But it's also to our detriment that it's given us all a voice, isn't it?

  61. I read a Gospel Coalition article this week that said that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not everyone is entitled to their own facts.

  62. And things fly around on social media so very quickly.

  63. If you're not on social media, good for you.

  64. It can be so distracting.

  65. Beloved, we live in a republic.

  66. And let me just say, the place to have political debate is not on Facebook.

  67. Have you ever seen a political debate that was beneficial to anybody on Facebook?

  68. I haven't.

  69. Maybe you're more active than I am in these places.

  70. It's not the place to post the article.

  71. It's not the place to have the debate.

  72. It never ends well.

  73. If you want to be an activist, please do so.

  74. Call your senator.

  75. Call your congressman.

  76. There's a way to do that in a republic.

  77. Unless you happen to know a congressman so well that he follows your Facebook feed and keeps up with your opinion on a matter.

  78. Just don't.

  79. Use it for what it's made for.

  80. Post pictures of your kids or your dog or your vacation.

  81. Let's go there and share the happy parts of our lives together.

  82. I just would strongly suggest to you that you not air your opinions in these matters in this way.

  83. Have an opinion.

  84. Have an informed opinion.

  85. But don't get it out there in that way.

  86. I want to ask two questions together as we consider the terrorist attack in Paris.

  87. Number one.

  88. Number one.

  89. Where is God in such tragedies?

  90. Or maybe more rightly, I should ask the question, so we'll ask it this way.

  91. How is God in such tragedies?

  92. So number one.

  93. How is God in such tragedies?

  94. And number two.

  95. What is God working to accomplish by allowing such things to happen?

  96. And you hear me correctly.

  97. What is God working to accomplish by allowing these things to happen?

  98. God himself has given us answers to these questions in his holy writ.

  99. And I will work to show you those answers for your good and for his glory this morning.

  100. The quote on the front of your bulletin by my favorite person to quote, Charles Haddon Spurgeon.

  101. He said,

  102. Oh, to have the word of Christ always dwelling inside of us.

  103. In the memory never forgotten.

  104. In the heart always loved.

  105. In the understanding really grasped.

  106. With all the powers and passions of the mind fully submitted to its control.

  107. We have this access to the absolute authority.

  108. The truth.

  109. And we can find the answers to these questions together.

  110. I hope to do so today.

  111. At least in brief.

  112. So firstly, how is God in the terror attacks in Paris?

  113. Here's my answer.

  114. God is providential in the terror attacks in Paris.

  115. God is providential.

  116. He reigns over.

  117. He is in control as he always is in these times.

  118. There is nothing that escapes his attention.

  119. There is nothing outside of his grasp.

  120. He directs all things for the fulfillment of his purposes.

  121. Nothing is outside of his purview.

  122. This is our God.

  123. God sustains all things.

  124. I'll invite you to try to keep up with me here.

  125. Hebrews 1.3 states that Jesus upholds the universe by the word of his power.

  126. God orders all things in creation.

  127. Job 37.6-13.

  128. For to the snow, he says, fall on the earth.

  129. Likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour.

  130. He seals up the hand of every man that all men whom he made may know it.

  131. Then the beasts go into their lairs and remain in their dens.

  132. From its chamber comes the whirlwind and cold from the scattering winds.

  133. By the breath of God, ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast.

  134. He loads the thick cloud with moisture.

  135. The clouds scatter his lightning.

  136. They turn around and around by his guidance to accomplish all that he commands them on the face of the habitable world.

  137. Whether for correction or for his land or for love, he causes it to happen.

  138. And this is not a misunderstanding on the part of the writer.

  139. This is God's inspired word.

  140. We understand the science behind all of these things, but God still speaks these things and they happen.

  141. Psalm 148.8 says, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfill his word.

  142. God orders all things creation.

  143. He orders the affairs of nations.

  144. Psalm 22.28.

  145. For kingship belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

  146. Proverbs 21.1.

  147. The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord.

  148. He turns it wherever he will.

  149. Acts 17.26.

  150. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,

  151. having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place.

  152. God has made all of the nations.

  153. God has decided for how long they will persist.

  154. God has decided where the boundaries of those nations exist.

  155. He orders the affairs of the nations.

  156. He orders the activity of mankind.

  157. Jeremiah 10.23.

  158. Jeremiah says, I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself,

  159. that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

  160. Proverbs 16.9.

  161. The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

  162. Beloved, this is what the Scripture says about God's providence in this world.

  163. God is providential in the terror attacks in Paris and every other tragedy that we will walk through in this life.

  164. Now, some would say of this means that God is providentially in control, that he permitted or that he allowed it to happen.

  165. But I say to you, and I believe that the Scripture says that he ordained it to happen.

  166. It's a difficult thing to say.

  167. That God ordained it to happen.

  168. And the immediate question that's begged, I hope your mind went there because it means that your mind is rational and it functions.

  169. Doesn't this make God the source of evil?

  170. God ordains it to come to pass, then isn't he the very source of it?

  171. Doesn't it originate with him?

  172. Is this even possible?

  173. What we know of the character of God, can he ordain evil to come to pass?

  174. Things might come to your mind.

  175. 1 John 1.5.

  176. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.

  177. That God is perfect.

  178. He is holy.

  179. He is righteous.

  180. Is it possible that God can sin?

  181. There's a resounding no of an answer to that, but it can be very troubling to our minds.

  182. And I can only answer the question for you in this way.

  183. But God ordaining sin does not make him the source of it, but rather God directs, gives direction to the evil of men in order to accomplish his purposes.

  184. There's stories of this.

  185. Many stories of Joseph being sold into slavery.

  186. And Joseph at the end of all of that realizes that all the good that God brought about through his life,

  187. he says to his brothers, what you intended for evil, God meant for good.

  188. Let's give another river analogy a try.

  189. I think the last one I tried really bombed.

  190. The evil of man, it belongs to us.

  191. The evil of man is a flowing river, and it is on the move.

  192. God's providence sets banks on the borders of that river, directs its flow.

  193. He himself is not the source of the river, but he orders it.

  194. He channels it so that the river arrives at its appointed destination,

  195. so that it accomplishes what God set out for it to accomplish.

  196. And it's challenging to my mind.

  197. I'd just be entirely honest to you.

  198. I wish that I could figure all things out in the Scripture,

  199. all of these apparent paradoxes that appear in the Scripture.

  200. I want to wrestle them out to their very, very end.

  201. Every reasonable explanation that I've ever read concerning these types of things

  202. still seems to come up a bit short for me.

  203. How is it possible that God ordains the evil, but he's not the source of the evil?

  204. So, it's a difficult thing to try to wrap our minds around.

  205. The alternatives are heretical.

  206. We can't think differently about who God is in this world,

  207. and so we must wrestle with these types of things.

  208. It is terrifying to me to think that 130 people could be killed

  209. over a very short period of time on Friday evening,

  210. and that God had no part in it, that he was off someplace else,

  211. that he wasn't paying attention,

  212. that he wasn't there in the midst of what was happening in that place.

  213. That caused me to shudder to think that that could even be possible

  214. if we were to ignore the God of Scripture.

  215. It's comforting to me to know that he ordained it.

  216. I hope it's comforting to you to go,

  217. Oh, this tragedy, this thing that we weep over, right?

  218. We mourn with those who mourn.

  219. It's something that God intended to have happen.

  220. The next question that may come to your mind,

  221. if God intends these things to happen, if he ordains them to happen,

  222. is man still responsible for his actions?

  223. Are these ISIS terrorists responsible for their actions?

  224. Kind of ironically, they're trying to be responsible for their actions.

  225. They've come right out and said,

  226. we did this because it is jihad,

  227. because of our religious ideologies.

  228. We did this.

  229. Our president seems to be trying to take that responsibility away from them.

  230. They certainly are responsible.

  231. God will not take that responsibility from them.

  232. They're fully responsible and accountable for their sin.

  233. God's providence does not absolve man of his responsibility.

  234. Let me show you an example of this in the Scripture.

  235. Turn to the Old Testament book of Habakkuk, chapter 1.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  236. I'll give you a second to find it while I drink some water.

  237. Habakkuk, chapter 1.

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  238. This is a very fitting text as we consider the tragedy in France.

  239. Because the prophet Habakkuk is predicting what's going to come to pass,

  240. and that is that Israel is going to be judged by a people, a warring people, the Chaldeans.

  241. Let's see what God has to say, beginning in verse 5.

  242. Habakkuk, chapter 1, verse 5.

    Habakkuk 1:5

  243. I'll read down through verse 11.

  244. This is God speaking.

  245. Look among the nations and see.

  246. Wonder and be astounded.

  247. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.

  248. This is God saying, I am doing a work.

  249. For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans,

  250. that bitter and hasty nation

  251. who march through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.

  252. They are dreaded and fearsome.

  253. Their justice and dignity go forth from themselves,

  254. meaning it's not existent in them.

  255. Their horses are swifter than leopards,

  256. more fierce than the evening wolves.

  257. Their horsemen press proudly on.

  258. The horsemen come from afar.

  259. They fly like an eagle, swift to devour.

  260. They all come for violence,

  261. all their faces forward.

  262. That is, set on that violence.

  263. They gather captives like sand.

  264. At kings they scoff,

  265. and at rulers they laugh.

  266. They laugh at every fortress,

  267. for they pile up earth and take it.

  268. They built these big earth ramps to get into fortresses.

  269. Then they sweep by like the wind and go on.

  270. Now, listen to this little phrase that comes next.

  271. Guilty men,

  272. whose own might is their God.

  273. You see that God says,

  274. I'm raising up the Chaldeans, right?

  275. I'm giving them this power that they have,

  276. and that might is their God,

  277. and they are guilty of this activity.

  278. Yet, He ordains,

  279. He orchestrates them to accomplish His purpose.

  280. In this case,

  281. that's the judgment of Israel.

  282. You see it in that text there.

  283. Now, as I mentioned previously,

  284. the only alternatives to this perspective

  285. has been deemed heretical,

  286. and we would do well to keep ourselves

  287. from thinking in these ways

  288. or functioning with these kinds of thoughts

  289. fueling us.

  290. There's two.

  291. Two I just want to point out to you.

  292. The first is called dualism.

  293. Dualism states that there's this cosmic war

  294. between good and evil,

  295. which I say to you is taking place,

  296. but that we don't know the outcome of that war.

  297. That the two are battling.

  298. Who can know which will win?

  299. God or Satan?

  300. This is not the case, beloved.

  301. God has conquered.

  302. Jesus Christ has delivered the death blow to Satan.

  303. Satan's not omniscient.

  304. He's not omnipotent.

  305. He's a created being.

  306. God is the creator.

  307. Satan is held on a very tight leash by our Lord.

  308. Those things that he is allowed to do

  309. are permitted by God.

  310. The story of Job.

  311. Job is a righteous man,

  312. and Satan wants to tempt him,

  313. and he comes and he asks permission of God to do this.

  314. Another example of this is found in the temptation,

  315. the prediction of Peter's denial.

  316. Turn there with me.

  317. Luke 22.

  318. Beginning in verse 31,

  319. Jesus says to Peter,

  320. Simon, Simon, behold,

  321. Satan demanded to have you

  322. that he might sift you like wheat.

  323. There's another request made here.

  324. Satan comes to God and he says,

  325. give me Peter.

  326. I'm going to sift him out like wheat.

  327. Verse 32,

  328. but I have prayed for you

  329. that your faith may not fail.

  330. And when you have turned again,

  331. right, so he's going to deny Christ,

  332. but he's going to turn back to Christ.

  333. The prediction's right here.

  334. When you have turned again,

  335. strengthen your brothers.

  336. Peter said to him,

  337. Lord, I'm ready to go with you

  338. both to prison and to death.

  339. Jesus said, I tell you,

  340. Peter, the rooster will not crow this day

  341. until you deny three times that you know me.

  342. You see it found right there in that text.

  343. This is not dualism, right?

  344. Jesus himself says,

  345. I have prayed and you will turn back to me.

  346. You will not be conquered by Satan.

  347. Dualism is a heresy

  348. and should not be considered.

  349. We should not say,

  350. now, was Satan in some way active

  351. and participating in these attacks?

  352. I couldn't say.

  353. I don't know.

  354. Again, he can't be all places at all times.

  355. Maybe he was someplace else

  356. carrying out some greater atrocity.

  357. Was there some spiritual power at play

  358. in that activity?

  359. I would say to you,

  360. yes, there was.

  361. But it didn't escape God.

  362. It didn't conquer him.

  363. God wasn't pushed back at bay

  364. so that this thing could happen.

  365. God ordained that it would.

  366. The second one is called open theism.

  367. And there are a lot of people in our day

  368. that are open theists,

  369. whether they realize it or not.

  370. Open theism.

  371. Also, the heresy.

  372. Open theism says

  373. that we are entirely free agents.

  374. Basically, that we can do

  375. whatever we want to do.

  376. And I agree that we have free will.

  377. It just depends on what you mean by free.

  378. It's a whole other conversation

  379. for another time or times, perhaps.

  380. But it would say that we're totally free

  381. and God doesn't know

  382. what will necessarily happen,

  383. but He knows all possible outcomes

  384. and He works in response

  385. to man's activity.

  386. That's open theism.

  387. That we're directing our own paths.

  388. And it's based loosely

  389. on some responses in the Scripture,

  390. some places that it's recorded

  391. as if God changed His mind

  392. in the Old Testament.

  393. It's got very shifting ground

  394. to stand on biblically.

  395. Most often, it's a work

  396. of human logic.

  397. Trying to make sense

  398. of how it is in this world

  399. that God can permit

  400. such things to happen.

  401. And that would be to say

  402. that these men freely chose

  403. and now God steps in

  404. and He responds.

  405. Oh, what can I redeem

  406. out of this situation?

  407. Look at my people

  408. doing the wrong thing once again.

  409. How can I step in

  410. to the midst of all of that?

  411. God really goes on trial

  412. at times like this.

  413. But God has spoken to us

  414. from His Word.

  415. And the next question

  416. that seems to be begged is then,

  417. how can a good God

  418. permit such things to happen?

  419. Beloved, I would say to you

  420. that we just have to be

  421. so careful in our understanding

  422. of what is good.

  423. The greatest and the highest good

  424. that we can possibly have

  425. is God Himself.

  426. And how He orchestrates

  427. all of these things

  428. to that great end

  429. is beyond me.

  430. Maybe a wiser man,

  431. but I don't think so.

  432. Paul said in Romans 11,

  433. 33-36,

  434. all of the depths

  435. of the riches

  436. and wisdom

  437. and knowledge of God.

  438. How unsearchable

  439. are His judgments

  440. and how inscrutable

  441. or unknowable,

  442. that's what that means,

  443. His ways.

  444. For who has known

  445. the mind of the Lord

  446. or who has been

  447. His counselor

  448. or who has given

  449. a gift to Him

  450. that He might be repaid

  451. for from Him

  452. and through Him

  453. and to Him

  454. are all things,

  455. including tragedies,

  456. terrorist attacks,

  457. to Him

  458. be glory forever.

  459. Amen.

  460. And Paul gets to

  461. the higher purpose

  462. of all things,

  463. does he not?

  464. The glory of God.

  465. God is firstly

  466. and foremostly,

  467. that may not be a word,

  468. concerned with His glory.

  469. This is what He's seeking out.

  470. God is God-centered.

  471. It would be horrible

  472. for us to be man-centered,

  473. but we're not God.

  474. God is the greatest thing,

  475. the Creator.

  476. We're all creation

  477. and we should all rightly

  478. worship Him.

  479. So He's working these things

  480. for that high good

  481. in some way.

  482. that we may never comprehend

  483. on this side of glory.

  484. And the problem

  485. with both of us

  486. is that we don't think

  487. of good

  488. in the right way.

  489. C.S. Lewis wrote

  490. in the book

  491. The Problem of Pain,

  492. We want,

  493. in fact,

  494. not so much

  495. a Father in Heaven

  496. as a Grandfather

  497. in Heaven,

  498. a senile benevolence

  499. who,

  500. as they say,

  501. liked to see young people

  502. enjoying themselves,

  503. and whose plan

  504. for the universe

  505. was simply

  506. that it might be

  507. truly said

  508. at the end of each day

  509. a good time

  510. was had

  511. by all.

  512. This is not the God

  513. of Scripture.

  514. This God

  515. ordains all things

  516. and works all things

  517. and brings all things

  518. underneath

  519. His goodness to us

  520. that He would

  521. give Himself

  522. to us.

  523. So secondly,

  524. what is God

  525. working to accomplish

  526. by allowing

  527. the terror attacks

  528. in Paris?

  529. His glory,

  530. and I've said that already,

  531. primarily,

  532. I think that's the

  533. single answer to this,

  534. and there may be

  535. a subset

  536. of other answers.

  537. As I've said,

  538. I don't even know

  539. that I could wrap my mind

  540. completely around

  541. those things.

  542. But He is

  543. seeking His glory

  544. in this thing

  545. specifically

  546. by calling

  547. all men

  548. to repent.

  549. By calling

  550. all men

  551. to repent.

  552. Let me show you

  553. another text of Scripture.

  554. Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  555. I love the Gospels.

  556. I love the record

  557. of Jesus'

  558. conversations.

  559. I love

  560. reading passages

  561. of Scripture

  562. where you expect,

  563. having some

  564. theological

  565. education

  566. of my own,

  567. you would expect

  568. He would answer

  569. in a particular way.

  570. Like, oh,

  571. I know how Jesus

  572. is going to answer

  573. this one.

  574. And then He answers

  575. it in a completely

  576. different way,

  577. the perfect way.

  578. Luke chapter 13,

    Luke 13:1

  579. verse 1.

  580. There were some

  581. present at that

  582. very time

  583. who told Him

  584. about the Galileans.

  585. these would be

  586. Galilean Jews

  587. whose blood

  588. Pilate had mingled

  589. with their sacrifices.

  590. And what seems

  591. to have happened here,

  592. there's not a lot

  593. of extra-biblical

  594. resources that tell us

  595. much about this.

  596. Pilate,

  597. the Roman governor

  598. over the province,

  599. was a cruel man

  600. in so many ways.

  601. We have a group

  602. of Galilean Jews

  603. who are making sacrifices,

  604. which means this was

  605. likely at Passover

  606. because there was

  607. so much sacrifice

  608. being done

  609. that the priests

  610. couldn't keep up with it.

  611. So, everyone got involved.

  612. So, they were actually

  613. at the temple

  614. in Jerusalem

  615. making sacrifice.

  616. And what's meant

  617. by this idea

  618. that Pilate mingled

  619. their blood

  620. is that they were

  621. killed in the temple.

  622. That they were massacred

  623. in the temple.

  624. We don't know how many,

  625. but Galilean Jews

  626. were murdered

  627. by Pilate

  628. as they were there

  629. doing the

  630. quote-unquote

  631. good activity

  632. of worship to God,

  633. giving sacrifice,

  634. to God.

  635. They were killed.

  636. And so, they

  637. asked this question,

  638. what about this thing

  639. that has happened

  640. and how does Jesus

  641. answer?

  642. And he answered them,

  643. do you think

  644. that these Galileans

  645. were worse sinners

  646. than all the other

  647. Galileans

  648. because they suffered

  649. in this way?

  650. The Jewish understanding

  651. of punishment

  652. in the world

  653. was that they had

  654. done something?

  655. Necessarily,

  656. these Galileans

  657. must have sinned

  658. if this type of a judgment

  659. was brought on them

  660. in this world.

  661. They couldn't have been

  662. without guilt

  663. if they were punished

  664. in this way.

  665. And Jesus' response

  666. to them is to say,

  667. of course they were

  668. with guilt.

  669. Just like you're

  670. with guilt.

  671. We're all with

  672. the same guilt.

  673. Pilate.

  674. And he goes on

  675. and he uses

  676. a natural disaster.

  677. So, here's Pilate

  678. probably by the hands

  679. of soldiers

  680. murdering Galilean Jews.

  681. And he says,

  682. no, I tell you,

  683. but unless you repent,

  684. you will all likewise

  685. perish.

  686. Or those 18

  687. on whom the tower

  688. in Siloam fell

  689. and killed them,

  690. do you think

  691. that they were

  692. worse offenders

  693. than all the others

  694. who lived

  695. in Jerusalem?

  696. No.

  697. I tell you,

  698. but unless you repent,

  699. you will all likewise

  700. perish.

  701. So, events like this

  702. that we're discussing

  703. this morning,

  704. this terrorist attack

  705. in Paris, France.

  706. With these events,

  707. God makes a cry out

  708. into the world,

  709. repent.

  710. Repent.

  711. Repent.

  712. I point out four words

  713. to you from this passage.

  714. All.

  715. No one is exempt.

  716. No one is exempt

  717. from the just

  718. condemnation of God

  719. for sin.

  720. Romans 3.10,

  721. none is righteous.

  722. No, not one.

  723. 3.23,

  724. for all has sinned

  725. and fall short

  726. of the glory of God.

  727. Apart from repentance,

  728. everyone is guilty.

  729. Equally so,

  730. those who were murdered

  731. in France

  732. and those who did

  733. the murdering

  734. in France

  735. under the just

  736. condemnation of God

  737. if they didn't repent.

  738. And we can't be too sure

  739. of those victims.

  740. They're all.

  741. No one is exempt.

  742. We're all under this

  743. condemnation

  744. apart from

  745. repentance.

  746. Did you use the word

  747. likewise?

  748. These people didn't

  749. expect their end

  750. would come

  751. in this way

  752. and neither will you,

  753. but it will

  754. come

  755. and we will

  756. perish.

  757. I don't think here

  758. he's talking about

  759. a physical death.

  760. He's not suggesting

  761. that if you repent,

  762. you'll have

  763. eternal life

  764. here

  765. in these bodies.

  766. Not a physical death,

  767. but I think he's referring

  768. to a final judgment

  769. and the eternal punishment

  770. that comes

  771. beyond that.

  772. This is what he means

  773. by the word

  774. perish.

  775. There's another place,

  776. John 3.16,

  777. for God so loved the world

  778. that he gave his only Son

  779. that whoever believes

  780. in him

  781. should not

  782. perish

  783. but have

  784. eternal life.

  785. And this comes to us

  786. through repentance.

  787. Unless you repent,

  788. that is that you turn

  789. from your evil

  790. and you turn

  791. to God

  792. and the way

  793. that this happens

  794. is through the personal

  795. work of Jesus Christ.

  796. Faith in

  797. Christ.

  798. This will be

  799. your end.

  800. This will be

  801. their

  802. end.

  803. God cries out

  804. to the world,

  805. repent.

  806. This life is fleeting.

  807. It is short.

  808. Evil runs rampant.

  809. I have promised

  810. to return.

  811. repent.

  812. In Luke 11.32,

  813. Jesus says,

  814. the men of Nineveh

  815. will rise up

  816. at the judgment

  817. with this generation

  818. and condemn it.

  819. For they repented

  820. at the preaching

  821. of Jonah

  822. and behold,

  823. something greater

  824. than Jonah

  825. is here.

  826. Jesus Christ

  827. calls us

  828. to repent.

  829. Listen to the

  830. repentance

  831. of the Ninevites.

  832. Jonah 3.5-9,

  833. and the people

  834. of Nineveh

  835. believed God.

  836. Remember,

  837. Jonah comes

  838. and preaches

  839. to them

  840. and the record

  841. is that they

  842. believed God.

  843. They called

  844. for a fast

  845. and put on

  846. sackcloth.

  847. This was a common

  848. sign of repentance

  849. in the day.

  850. From the greatest

  851. of them

  852. to the least

  853. of them.

  854. The word

  855. reached the king

  856. of Nineveh

  857. and he arose

  858. from his throne,

  859. removed his robe,

  860. covered himself

  861. with sackcloth

  862. and sat in ashes.

  863. And he issued

  864. a proclamation

  865. and published

  866. through Nineveh

  867. by the decree

  868. of the king

  869. and his nobles,

  870. let neither man

  871. nor beast,

  872. herd nor flock

  873. taste anything.

  874. Let them not feed

  875. or drink water,

  876. but let man

  877. and beast

  878. be covered

  879. with sackcloth

  880. and let them

  881. call out mightily

  882. to God.

  883. Let everyone,

  884. this is this picture

  885. of repentance,

  886. turn from his evil way

  887. and from the violence

  888. that is in his hands.

  889. Who knows?

  890. God may turn

  891. and relent

  892. and turn

  893. from his fierce anger

  894. so that we may not

  895. perish.

  896. And we know

  897. if we read on

  898. that he did in fact

  899. relent

  900. from his punishment

  901. to the Ninevites.

  902. So where does that

  903. leave us?

  904. What does that leave us?

  905. God's calling out

  906. in these types

  907. of activities

  908. for repentance.

  909. Well, firstly,

  910. we need to pray

  911. for repentance.

  912. Have you prayed

  913. one time

  914. since a week ago

  915. Friday

  916. for the repentance

  917. of the world

  918. in light

  919. of this type of thing?

  920. I would encourage

  921. you to do so.

  922. This shock wave

  923. that has gone

  924. around the world.

  925. Don't let it be wasted.

  926. Life is short.

  927. It is fleeting.

  928. It is passing.

  929. And those who don't

  930. repent will

  931. perish.

  932. This should be

  933. a very clear reminder

  934. to us of that.

  935. A bunch of young people

  936. enjoying themselves

  937. at a rock show

  938. and someone

  939. opened fires

  940. inside.

  941. Never safe

  942. apart from Christ.

  943. Pray for repentance.

  944. Pray

  945. for the perpetrators

  946. of such acts

  947. and those who are

  948. going to come

  949. behind them.

  950. The waves

  951. of terror

  952. that we're going

  953. to experience

  954. in this world.

  955. Pray for them

  956. as well.

  957. And I know

  958. that is hard.

  959. My mind

  960. and my heart

  961. immediately goes

  962. to pray for vindication.

  963. Vindicate your people.

  964. Punish and destroy.

  965. Eternal damnation

  966. is what they deserve.

  967. God has been good

  968. to us

  969. even though

  970. we were his enemy.

  971. They are no more

  972. his enemy

  973. than we were.

  974. The Ninevites

  975. are a wonderful

  976. example of this.

  977. You know why Jonah

  978. didn't want to go

  979. to the Ninevites?

  980. Because the Ninevites

  981. were wickedly evil

  982. and had been horrible

  983. to Israel.

  984. They were known

  985. for cutting off

  986. limbs of their captors,

  987. for skinning them alive.

  988. Horrible,

  989. horrible things.

  990. Atrocities

  991. had been delivered

  992. upon the Israelites.

  993. Jonah was afraid

  994. that God would

  995. actually save them.

  996. He can't possibly

  997. go to them.

  998. pray for ISIS.

  999. Pray for the radical Muslims

  1000. in the world.

  1001. God is greater

  1002. than their upbringing

  1003. and their ideologies.

1004. We ought not only pray

  1005. for repentance,

  1006. we should go

  1007. to the world.

  1008. There's so much

  1009. tragic death.

  1010. There's so much

  1011. evil.

  1012. To keep our analogies

  1013. together,

  1014. we call this darkness.

  1015. And we're meant

  1016. to be light

  1017. in those places.

  1018. We're not meant

  1019. to huddle together

  1020. as light

  1021. in a singular spot.

  1022. Hear me say this,

  1023. church.

  1024. The church of Christ

  1025. is gathered together

  1026. in order

  1027. for us

  1028. to go.

  1029. This is the mission

  1030. of the church.

  1031. All the good

  1032. that we do together,

  1033. all the bringing

  1034. of our minds together,

  1035. all the prayers,

1036. the shifting of our hearts,

  1037. all of those things

  1038. are meant

  1039. for us

  1040. to go.

  1041. And I will say

  1042. this to you,

  1043. I praise God

  1044. for so much

  1045. health

  1046. in this congregation,

  1047. so many good things,

  1048. so many evidences

  1049. of His work,

  1050. but I will say

  1051. to you,

  1052. I cannot say

  1053. this church is healthy

  1054. until this church

  1055. is going.

  1056. Let's go.

  1057. Let's go.

  1058. Let's go.

  1059. People are perishing.

  1060. Let's go to France.

  1061. Let's go to Syria.

  1062. Let's go to Iraq

  1063. and Iran.

  1064. Right?

  1065. These people need

  1066. the gospel

  1067. of Jesus Christ.

  1068. Pray for repentance.

  1069. Go.

  1070. Go to your neighbor.

  1071. Go to your classmate

  1072. and your workmate.

  1073. Let's go.

  1074. God is providential

  1075. in the terror attacks

  1076. in Paris.

  1077. He ordained it

  1078. and other calamity

  1079. in the world

1080. for the sake of His glory,

  1081. specifically

  1082. by calling all men

  1083. to repent.

  1084. I appreciated

  1085. John Piper

  1086. in an NPR interview

1087. after the Indian Ocean tsunami

  1088. in 2004.

  1089. You recall,

  1090. that happened

  1091. the day after Christmas

  1092. in 2004.

  1093. So early January 2005,

  1094. he was interviewed

  1095. on NPR

  1096. and he just did

  1097. such a wonderful job

  1098. of honoring God

  1099. in the way

  1100. he explained this.

  1101. But he said,

1102. and I just want you

  1103. to hold this phrase,

  1104. God is always

  1105. mingling mercy

  1106. and judgment.

1107. And this is what God

  1108. did on behalf

  1109. of the preacher.

  1110. Ecclesiastes 4,

  1111. 1 through 3,

  1112. again I saw

  1113. all the oppressions

  1114. that are done

  1115. under the sun

  1116. and behold

  1117. the tears

  1118. of the oppressed

  1119. and had no one

  1120. to comfort them.

  1121. On the side

  1122. of their oppressors

  1123. there was power

1124. and there was no one

  1125. to comfort them.

  1126. And I thought

  1127. the dead

  1128. who are already dead

  1129. more fortunate

  1130. than the living

  1131. who are still alive.

  1132. But better than both

  1133. is he

1134. who has not yet been

  1135. and has not seen

  1136. the evil deeds

  1137. that are under

  1138. the sun.

  1139. You hear just

  1140. the defeat

  1141. in the writing

  1142. of the preacher.

  1143. Oh, meaningless.

  1144. Meaningless.

  1145. Look at all

  1146. of the evil.

  1147. It would be better

  1148. not to be alive.

  1149. It would be better

  1150. to be already dead

  1151. and to witness

  1152. the evil

  1153. of this day.

  1154. But by the time

  1155. he gets

  1156. to Ecclesiastes 12
