  1. For us this morning, we've talked about hope, and we can read hope in scriptures, but there's so many people around us who have no hope.

  2. ! Their life circumstances and their life experiences are so heavy and so burdensome that they can't see through it and see out of it.

  3. So this morning, let's talk a little bit about hope.

  4. A good definition that I found is hope is a confident expectation.

  5. Confident expectation.

  6. So something's going to happen, and you're sure it's going to happen, and you place your trust in that.

  7. G.K. Chesterton says, hope means hoping when there is no hope.

  8. Otherwise, it is no virtue at all.

  9. In the Old Testament, hope was displayed in God's deliverance, God's provision, God being God, and providing for His people, and doing what He said He was going to do.

  10. That was hope displayed.

  11. In Psalm 130, verse 7 and 8, we can wait with hopefulness.

    Psalms 130:7

  12. Israel can wait with hopefulness for redemption and for rescue because God has done it over and over and over for them.

  13. In the New Testament, hope is wrapped up in one person and one name, and that's the name of Jesus.

  14. 1 Timothy 1.1 says, Jesus, Christ Jesus, our hope.

  15. We can trust in Jesus.

  16. We can be confident in Jesus.

  17. That is where hope is found.

  18. So this morning, I want to look at hope.

  19. I want to look at a story that may not seem very hopeful.

  20. I want to share with you some of the things I've learned about hope in the almost three years that we've been in Memphis.

  21. Some may seem obvious to you, and I apologize, but I'm a slow learner.

  22. And then let's see what the Spirit does this morning together.

  23. So Acts 3.

  24. Nathan's daughter read it, but I'm going to read it one more time.

  25. Verses 1-10.

  26. Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

  27. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the beautiful gate,

  28. to ask alms or money of those entering the temple.

  29. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.

  30. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, look at us.

  31. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

  32. But Peter said, I have no silver and gold.

  33. But what I do have, I give to you.

  34. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.

  35. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up.

  36. And immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.

  37. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk.

  38. And he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

  39. And all the people saw him walking and praising God.

  40. And recognized him as the one who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple, asking for alms.

  41. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

  42. I don't need to retell the story.

  43. You guys are familiar with the story.

  44. Nathan just told the story to the kids and answered some questions.

  45. But quickly, a couple of things I want to point out before we dig into what I've learned.

  46. This man was carried every day, daily to this spot, to ask for alms, to ask for money.

  47. And he was carried by friends or family.

  48. Who knows who they were?

  49. But they carried him and brought him there so that he can make a living, so to speak.

  50. That was his situation.

  51. That was his circumstances.

  52. Because his body did not work.

  53. His legs did not work.

  54. And he couldn't take himself there.

  55. It's important to note that that was as far as he could go.

  56. He couldn't go any further.

  57. And we'll touch on that here in just a few minutes.

  58. But daily, these people brought him there and he asked for money because he thought,

  59. I assume he thought that that's where his satisfaction was going to be, was in that money.

  60. So here's the first thing I learned.

  61. The first thing I've learned about hope is hope is not about me.

  62. Hope is not about me.

  63. Verse 1 says,

  64. Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

  65. Placing myself in this story, I could say, well, I'm kind of Peter, I guess.

  66. I'm not an apostle, but sure, I'd be going up and walking to the temple.

  67. Verse 2,

  68. Peter and John could have just walked and continued their path.

  69. They were going to the temple, the hour of prayer.

  70. That was their destination.

  71. And they see this man.

  72. Verse 4 tells us,

  73. They see him and they turn their gaze on him as he's asking for money.

  74. They could have ignored him.

  75. This man would have been used to being ignored.

  76. We see the story that Jesus tells about the priest and the Pharisees who see a man in need

  77. and they walk on the other side of the street.

  78. This man has probably looked people in the eyes and watched them immediately turn their eyes away.

  79. We have beggars all the time.

  80. I have homeless people walking up and down our streets.

  81. We see beggars everywhere.

  82. We can't run away from them, whether it's on the street corner or the front of Kroger or the front of the mall.

  83. They're everywhere.

  84. You can't ignore them.

  85. And Peter and John choose not to ignore them because they understand that the hope that they have,

  86. that they've received, isn't about them.

  87. So let's back up a little bit.

  88. In Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  89. the apostles are all together.

  90. Jesus says in verse 8,

  91. speaking to the apostles right before he ascends into heaven,

  92. he says,

  93. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you

  94. and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  95. in all Judea,

  96. Samaria,

  97. and to the end of the earth.

  98. It echoes the Great Commission in Matthew 28.

  99. It says,

  100. go and make disciples

  101. to all nations,

  102. baptizing them in the Father,

  103. the Son,

  104. and the Holy Spirit.

  105. This power,

  106. this is the same power

  107. that raised Jesus from the dead.

  108. This is the same power that

  109. later in chapter 2,

  110. Pentecost,

  111. the Spirit comes down to Pentecost

  112. and it appears that fire is on their head.

  113. This is the same Spirit

  114. that moves at Pentecost

  115. where thousands of people's lives

  116. are changed by Jesus.

  117. This is the same Spirit

  118. that later empowers them

  119. to do bold things for the Gospel.

  120. This is the same power that lives

  121. inside of you and inside of me.

  122. This is the same power from the Holy Spirit,

  123. again,

  124. that raised Jesus from the dead.

  125. That He was dead

  126. and He is alive.

  127. And this power is in Peter and John

  128. and leading Peter and John

  129. as they're walking to the temple

  130. and they see this man

  131. and they turn their gaze on this man.

  132. See, hope's not about me.

  133. I wasn't created to sit

  134. and bask in the glorious news

  135. of having hope

  136. and just let it flood me

  137. and just sit under it

  138. and be like,

  139. this is so great.

  140. That's not what I was created to do

  141. and you weren't created to do that either.

  142. We were created

  143. to make disciples

  144. and to proclaim the good news of Jesus

  145. and to glorify His name.

  146. All of that wrapped up into one.

  147. Hope is not about me

  148. and it's not about you.

  149. We read Scriptures

  150. and we get comforted.

  151. I'm going to read some this morning

  152. and you'll probably go,

  153. that's one of my favorites.

  154. But let's be honest,

  155. it's not what you were created to do.

  156. It's just to read it.

  157. What about those people

  158. who are far from God?

  159. What about those people

  160. who are living without hope?

  161. What about the teenage girl

  162. who was pregnant

  163. who's raising a child?

  164. Where's the hope in that?

  165. The circumstances are too tough.

  166. She can't go to school with a baby.

  167. How does she make it happen?

  168. What about her?

  169. What about this man?

  170. Broken.

  171. Wednesday,

  172. a week ago Wednesday,

  173. we had our missional community,

  174. which is like your community outreach groups,

  175. we had a Thanksgiving dinner.

  176. And we had,

  177. I went out Tuesday

  178. and bought a honey-baked ham

  179. for 30 people.

  180. Now if you know honey-baked ham,

  181. that's not cheap.

  182. In fact,

  183. I had to talk myself

  184. into buying it at the register.

  185. The lady said,

  186. it's going to be $80.

  187. And I was like,

  188. what?

  189. I cannot do this.

  190. But I talked myself into it

  191. because I thought,

  192. I'm going to love

  193. my missional community.

  194. I'm going to love

  195. the people in our MC

  196. and they're going to eat well.

  197. We're going to celebrate well

  198. because Jesus is good

  199. and He provides for us

  200. and that's what we're going to do.

  201. So the night,

  202. Wednesday night,

  203. it's about 5.45,

  204. maybe close to 6.

  205. I look outside

  206. and there are kids

  207. just coming to our house.

  208. Neighborhood kids.

  209. I don't know most of them.

  210. I don't know.

  211. I certainly don't know their names.

  212. I know maybe 20% of the names.

  213. And I'm looking

  214. and I'm just getting

  215. bigger and bigger eyes.

  216. this is not good.

  217. I'm getting angry

  218. because I bought this ham

  219. for our missional community,

  220. for our family

  221. to celebrate together

  222. and to eat well.

  223. No,

  224. this isn't what your plan is,

  225. God,

  226. because I had a plan

  227. and this isn't it.

  228. So I'm looking at Jamie.

  229. I'm looking at my wife

  230. and she's looking at me

  231. with the same big eyes

  232. and we're like having this pep talk

  233. in the middle of the living room.

  234. I'm like,

  235. it's okay

  236. because God is good

  237. and He's called us to do this

  238. and these kids need Jesus

  239. and we're talking to each other

  240. and we had enough food

  241. for everyone.

  242. We had over 30 kids in our house,

  243. over 20 adults.

  244. Our house is maybe 1,500 square feet.

  245. It's not a big house.

  246. Three little bedrooms.

  247. Everybody was spread everywhere.

  248. Nothing got broken,

  249. I don't think.

  250. Haven't found it yet if it did.

  251. But everybody ate well.

  252. There's hope in my life

  253. and maybe,

  254. just maybe we gave them

  255. a fragrance of hope

  256. on that evening

  257. because hope isn't about me.

  258. Peter and John saw this man,

  259. turned their gaze on him

  260. and they spoke to him

  261. and as we'll see in just a minute,

  262. they help him.

  263. Second thing I've learned

  264. is hope is not circumstantial.

  265. Hope is not dependent

  266. on your circumstances

  267. or how much money you have

  268. in a bank account.

  269. Hope is a confident expectation

  270. and you can't put confident expectation

  271. on anything that is temporal.

  272. Anything that is temporary.

  273. dust and wind.

  274. The lame beggar was asking

  275. for all he knew

  276. and what he thought he needed.

  277. What he thought maybe

  278. would help his situation

  279. if I just had some money.

  280. He was brought there

  281. every day at the same place.

  282. So much so that at the end

  283. of this text,

  284. the people said,

  285. that's the guy who's been

  286. sitting there,

  287. the last whatever many years.

  288. That's the guy we've seen

  289. over and over.

  290. We know him.

  291. That's the guy who sits

  292. outside that temple.

  293. Over and over,

  294. this guy is there.

  295. He didn't think money

  296. would heal him.

  297. How could he?

  298. But he thought that money

  299. would help his situation,

  300. would help his life.

  301. Maybe just make it

  302. a little better.

  303. Maybe I could eat

  304. a honey-baked ham

  305. instead of a Kroger ham.

  306. It's almost as if

  307. his identity

  308. was rooted in

  309. receiving those alms,

  310. right?

  311. Because that's what he was.

  312. He was a beggar.

  313. Every day he was there.

  314. I can't emphasize enough.

  315. He was there every day

  316. begging.

  317. So this is his identity.

  318. This is what he's known as.

  319. So he's living out

  320. his identity

  321. as a beggar

  322. asking for money.

  323. If I can get

  324. this amount,

  325. if I can

  326. beg enough

  327. and maybe get $10,

  328. then my life

  329. will have meaning

  330. or whatever the amount is.

  331. His identity also

  332. was not to be able

  333. to enter the temple.

  334. I don't know if you guys

  335. knew this,

  336. but in Leviticus 21,

  337. it says that

  338. a lame person

  339. was not allowed

  340. to enter the temple

  341. because they saw him

  342. as unclean

  343. or saw her as unclean.

  344. So he wasn't even able.

  345. That's as far as he could go

  346. is to that gate.

  347. He wasn't allowed.

  348. So his identity

  349. was not just begging,

  350. but his identity

  351. was as a lame person

  352. who couldn't even go

  353. where everybody else could.

  354. hope is not in our circumstances

  355. though.

  356. When we find our identity

  357. in our circumstances,

  358. when we're an athlete

  359. or a preacher

  360. or a teacher

  361. or whatever it is,

  362. and we find our identity

  363. in that,

  364. there is no hope in that.

  365. There is no hope.

  366. All around us,

  367. people are looking

  368. to things or circumstances

  369. for their identity.

  370. They're looking for

  371. the next pair of Jordans

  372. or the next deposit

  373. in their bank account

  374. or their tax return.

  375. They're waiting

  376. for their tax return

  377. so that they can then

  378. live for the next six months.

  379. They're looking

  380. for the next thing

  381. to fulfill them

  382. and find their identity

  383. in when they can't.

  384. It's impossible

  385. to find hope

  386. in those things.

  387. Circumstances

  388. do not make you

  389. who you are.

  390. That's the teenage pregnant

  391. girl who was pregnant.

  392. She's now a mom.

  393. Sure, her identity title

  394. has changed,

  395. but it doesn't change

  396. who she is

  397. in the eyes of God.

  398. And your circumstances.

  399. You could have had

  400. an abusive past

  401. or you could have had

  402. whatever it is,

  403. but your circumstances

  404. don't change.

  405. Or your circumstances

  406. may change,

  407. but that doesn't

  408. change your identity.

  409. It doesn't change

  410. how God views you.

  411. And we can have hope

  412. in that because hope

  413. is not circumstantial.

  414. Your circumstances

  415. right now

  416. may appear hopeless.

  417. It may appear

  418. like you have

  419. nowhere to go,

  420. nothing that can get you

  421. out of what you're in,

  422. but that doesn't change

  423. how God sees you

  424. and it certainly

  425. doesn't change

  426. the hope

  427. that you have

  428. in Christ.

  429. But what about

  430. the people around us?

  431. What about

  432. the people around you?

  433. Now, if you're

  434. a college student

  435. and you live on campus,

  436. you guys are all

  437. kind of on the even

  438. playing field,

  439. so to speak.

  440. You have the same

  441. place to live

  442. and kind of have

  443. the same stuff.

  444. You all have those

  445. milk crates

  446. and crazy plastic

  447. furniture and all

  448. that stuff, right?

  449. Is that what you guys

  450. have?

  451. And maybe a laptop?

  452. I don't know.

  453. You all have

  454. the same kind of stuff.

  455. But if you live

  456. outside of the campus,

  457. you live in a neighborhood,

  458. everybody may appear

  459. the same,

  460. but they're certainly

  461. not the same.

  462. What about those people?

  463. I look around

  464. the people around us

  465. and I feel hopeless.

  466. I get defeated,

  467. negative,

  468. negative.

  469. And here's why.

  470. Because I think,

  471. I think

  472. that they have no hope

  473. because of their

  474. circumstances.

  475. I look at their

  476. circumstances and I say

  477. they're hopeless.

  478. Single mom,

  479. seven kids,

  480. I feel bad for her

  481. and I don't know

  482. how to help her.

  483. I feel helpless.

  484. I feel hopeless

  485. when I look at people

  486. and I think that

  487. I can fix them

  488. because they're my project

  489. and I can try to

  490. give them what they need

  491. and then that will

  492. make the big difference.

  493. Hey, they need Jesus.

  494. They don't need me.

  495. I'm not Jesus.

  496. They don't need me

  497. to fix them.

  498. I feel hopeless

  499. when I'm frozen

  500. by fear

  501. because we don't

  502. look the same

  503. or we don't

  504. have the same mannerisms.

  505. We don't wear

  506. the same clothes.

  507. There was a,

  508. in our neighborhood,

  509. there was this picnic,

  510. a get-together.

  511. This lady,

  512. old lady who's been

  513. there 40 years,

  514. she's been in

  515. the same house.

  516. She had this get-together

  517. to sign petitions

  518. to get a crosswalk

  519. and maybe,

  520. hopefully,

  521. some speed bumps

  522. on our streets

  523. which is a great thing.

  524. We were there

  525. and we pull up

  526. and we were

  527. the only white people there.

  528. And I don't know.

  529. We were extremely nervous.

  530. We actually parked

  531. and we looked at each other.

  532. We talked soft enough

  533. so our kids didn't hear

  534. this conversation

  535. and we said,

  536. should we go?

  537. I don't know.

  538. I mean,

  539. it's a good thing

  540. but that looks,

  541. I don't,

  542. we weren't scared

  543. for our life.

  544. It was just going to be,

  545. it was going to be,

  546. we were going to feel awkward

  547. and,

  548. but we went.

  549. We went because

  550. it was the right thing to do.

  551. We can't let the circumstances

  552. around us

  553. or the circumstances

  554. in other people's lives

  555. or the way that they look

  556. freeze us,

  557. free us,

  558. or freeze us

  559. from doing

  560. and being

  561. a fragrance of hope

  562. to those around us.

  563. This man's circumstances

  564. were bad.

  565. But he still had,

  566. as we'll see,

  567. he still had the opportunity

  568. to have hope.

  569. not only is hope

  570. not circumstantial,

  571. and here's the,

  572. you guys are going to go,

  573. yeah,

  574. of course,

  575. unless you've already done that

  576. and that's cool too.

  577. Hope is only found

  578. in Jesus.

  579. 1 Timothy 1.1

  580. says that Jesus,

  581. our hope,

  582. hope is only found

  583. in Jesus.

  584. Jesus.

  585. Look at verse 4-8.

  586. Jesus isn't mentioned here.

  587. Except by the name of Jesus,

  588. but he is all in these

  589. scriptures

  590. and in this story.

  591. And Peter directed

  592. his gaze at him

  593. as did John

  594. and said,

  595. look at us.

  596. And he fixed his attention

  597. on them,

  598. expecting Peter,

  599. expecting to receive

  600. something from them.

  601. But Peter said,

  602. I have no silver and gold.

  603. In other words,

  604. I don't have

  605. what you're asking for.

  606. I'm sorry,

  607. my pockets are empty.

  608. I don't have the item

  609. that you are looking for.

  610. However,

  611. but what I do have

  612. I give to you

  613. in the name of Jesus Christ

  614. of Nazareth,

  615. rise up and walk.

  616. And he took him

  617. by the right hand,

  618. raised him up,

  619. and immediately

  620. his feet and ankles

  621. were made strong.

  622. And leaping up,

  623. he stood and began

  624. to walk

  625. and entered the temple

  626. with him,

  627. walking and leaping

  628. and praising God.

  629. Jesus heals him.

  630. The Holy Spirit of God

  631. heals this man.

  632. There's only hope

  633. in Jesus alone.

  634. Now for us,

  635. healings in the Bible

  636. are mostly pictures

  637. of the spiritual healing

  638. that takes place

  639. when Jesus changes our lives,

  640. when he saves us.

  641. So this picture of healing

  642. is a picture of those

  643. who are dead and broken

  644. that God makes whole

  645. in Jesus Christ.

  646. In the name of Jesus Christ

  647. of Nazareth,

  648. rise up and walk.

  649. There's no other name.

  650. Acts 4 verse 12 says,

    Acts 4:12

  651. no other name,

  652. no other name above

  653. the name of Jesus.

  654. There's no other name

  655. that could have saved,

  656. that could have healed him.

  657. There's no other name

  658. that could have saved him.

  659. There's no other name

  660. that could have helped

  661. or can help the people

  662. around you

  663. who have no hope.

  664. Only Jesus.

  665. 2 Corinthians 1 says,

  666. in Him we set our hope.

  667. So here's the rubber

  668. meets the road for us.

  669. Now we can sit

  670. and we can read this.

  671. I can tell you

  672. all the things

  673. I've learned about hope.

  674. And I can do nothing about it.

  675. And I can say,

  676. that's great

  677. and take great notes

  678. and have this nice outline

  679. laid out

  680. and do nothing about it.

  681. And care nothing

  682. about the people around us.

  683. It's possible for me

  684. to do that.

  685. And it's possible

  686. for you to do that.

  687. But Jesus is

  688. the only hope

  689. that people have.

  690. So as we sit here

  691. and sing about Jesus,

  692. as we sit here

  693. and sing in Christ alone,

  694. as we sit here

  695. and sing about

  696. the glorious name

  697. of Jesus,

  698. what are we going

  699. to do about it?

  700. Peter and John

  701. were not intending

  702. to meet this guy.

  703. But the Spirit

  704. put this guy

  705. in front of them

  706. in their path

  707. and they were obedient

  708. to do

  709. what they knew

  710. what to do.

  711. I praise God

  712. for Christ's family church.

  713. I praise God

  714. for the words

  715. that are preached

  716. and the gospel

  717. that is proclaimed.

  718. But if Christ's family church

  719. is not reaching

  720. the people around them,

  721. then what is the point?

  722. You want me to repeat that, Evie?

  723. What's the point?

  724. If I'm studying Scripture

  725. and I'm preparing

  726. for a sermon to preach

  727. here this morning

  728. and I don't live this out,

  729. what is the point?

  730. There is no point.

  731. Because Jesus

  732. is where hope is found.

  733. People need to know that.

  734. That doesn't mean

  735. that the teenager

  736. who is pregnant

  737. who's having this child

  738. and you say,

  739. Jesus will fix your problems.

  740. No!

  741. Jesus isn't going to

  742. change her circumstances.

  743. Jesus isn't going to

  744. fix that she's trying

  745. to figure out

  746. how to be in school

  747. and figure out

  748. who's going to watch

  749. her child.

  750. That's not what that means.

  751. But Jesus is going

  752. to make her whole.

  753. That broken heart

  754. is going to be made whole.

  755. She's going to have hope

  756. in Jesus.

  757. Jesus is going to have

  758. to be made whole.

  759. We can celebrate

  760. the Advent

  761. and we can talk

  762. about the long-awaited

  763. Savior who's going

  764. to come back.

  765. But what about

  766. the people around you?

  767. Nitschke,

  768. I don't know,

  769. in the 1800s

  770. and 1900s,

  771. he was a philosopher

  772. and who knows

  773. what else he did.

  774. He claimed that

  775. Christianity made

  776. people cowards.

  777. Cowards.

  778. Because it taught

  779. that whatever happened

  780. was God's will.

  781. And if God wills it,

  782. then it will happen.

  783. Thus,

  784. discouraging efforts

  785. to change

  786. the world.

  787. Hope

  788. changes

  789. the world.

  790. Jesus

  791. changes

  792. the world.

  793. Not,

  794. doesn't leave

  795. us a room

  796. to sit

  797. and do

  798. nothing.

  799. We just went

  800. to that picnic.

  801. The only white

  802. people there.

  803. People looked

  804. at us funny.

  805. We didn't talk

  806. about Jesus,

  807. but we made

  808. our presence

  809. known and hopefully

  810. someday down the road

  811. that will build

  812. relationships where

  813. we can then talk

  814. about Jesus

  815. with people.

  816. It doesn't change

  817. our neighborhood.

  818. It doesn't fix

  819. anything.

  820. It doesn't fix

  821. the homeless

  822. problem or the

  823. poverty problem.

  824. Hope is found

  825. in Jesus,

  826. but also hope

  827. requires action

  828. and I've already

  829. talked about it.

  830. Hope requires action.

  831. Look at Peter

  832. and John.

  833. What do they do?

  834. So they talk to him

  835. and they say,

  836. I don't have

  837. what you're asking

  838. for,

  839. but what I do

  840. have I give to you

  841. in the name of

  842. Jesus Christ of

  843. Nazareth.

  844. Rise and walk.

  845. And Peter reaches

  846. down with his right

  847. hand and grabs him

  848. and he stands

  849. that he's never

  850. stood before.

  851. Like he's been

  852. lame from birth.

  853. He's never stood

  854. before.

  855. He's doing

  856. something new

  857. and his legs

  858. work immediately.

  859. Just like you

  860. and just like me.

  861. and just like

  862. you and me,

  863. your heart

  864. that was not

  865. working correctly

  866. works correctly

  867. now because of

  868. Jesus.

  869. You now can

  870. honor Jesus

  871. and you can

  872. glorify Jesus

  873. and you can

  874. glory in his

  875. goodness and you

  876. can do all these

  877. things that you

  878. originally couldn't

  879. do because of

  880. sin.

  881. And this man

  882. is able to

  883. walk and his

  884. body works

  885. because Peter

  886. and John

  887. were obedient

  888. to the

  889. spirit's

  890. leading and

  891. they did

  892. something.

  893. There are

  894. people around

  895. you who

  896. need you to

  897. reach down

  898. and grab

  899. them.

  900. There are

  901. people around

  902. you that

  903. need you to

  904. reach down

  905. with your

  906. right hand

  907. or your

  908. left and

  909. grab them

  910. and help

  911. them.

  912. Hope is

  913. like the

  914. Christmas

  915. presents on

  916. Christmas

  917. morning under

  918. the Christmas

  919. tree.

  920. Now most of

  921. y'all in here

  922. are young

  923. enough that

  924. you can

  925. remember the

  926. anticipation,

  927. you can

  928. remember the

  929. feelings that

  930. you had,

  931. you can

  932. remember getting

  933. up at three

  934. or four in

  935. the morning

  936. because you

  937. couldn't sleep

  938. anymore.

  939. And if you

  940. lived upstairs,

  941. you'd run

  942. downstairs to the

  943. Christmas tree and

  944. you'd look at it

  945. and go, oh my

  946. gosh, it's so

  947. great.

  948. And you'd run

  949. upstairs and you'd

  950. wake up your

  951. siblings and then

  952. you'd run back

  953. downstairs and then

  954. you'd figure out

  955. how to wake

  956. everybody up on

  957. accident and then

  958. you'd get

  959. everybody up and

  960. hope though is

  961. like the

  962. Christmas presents.

  963. You know they're

  964. going to be there.

  965. You may not know

  966. exactly what they

  967. are, but you know

  968. they're going to be

  969. there and you want

  970. to tell everybody

  971. in that house about

  972. those presents.

  973. They're here.

  974. You and I,

  975. hope is like those

  976. presents.

  977. We may not know

  978. exactly how it

  979. plays out.

  980. We know that

  981. Jesus is going

  982. to come back

  983. and we know

  984. we have the

  985. details, but we

  986. don't know

  987. exactly when and

  988. there's some

  989. things we're

  990. missing about it,

  991. but we have

  992. this anticipation

  993. or we should

  994. have this

  995. anticipation that

  996. Jesus is coming

  997. back.

  998. That Jesus is

  999. coming back and

  1000. it's going to be

  1001. so good and we

  1002. need to wake up

  1003. everyone and get

  1004. them to be part

  1005. of it.

  1006. we should be

  1007. waking up our

  1008. future family

  1009. members.

  1010. That's not our

  1011. job to save.

  1012. That's the

  1013. Spirit's job.

  1014. That's God's job.

  1015. But we certainly

  1016. should wake them

  1017. up and let them

  1018. know that there

  1019. are presents under

  1020. the tree for them.

  1021. Finally, hope

  1022. changes everything.

  1023. Hope changes

  1024. everything.

  1025. Our circumstances

  1026. can be so dim,

  1027. there can

  1028. appear to be no

  1029. hope out of our

  1030. situations and yet

  1031. there is hope

  1032. because of Jesus.

  1033. Our circumstances

  1034. can tear us

  1035. down.

  1036. Things can be

  1037. ripped from us,

  1038. but Jesus is

  1039. still there.

  1040. He'll never be

  1041. ripped from you.

  1042. And we know

  1043. through the Bible

  1044. that sin no

  1045. longer has a

  1046. hold on us.

  1047. Sin no longer

  1048. has victory

  1049. over you and

  1050. me in Christ

  1051. Jesus.

  1052. Death no longer

  1053. has a hold

  1054. on you or me.

  1055. We die,

  1056. we're with

  1057. Jesus.

  1058. That's hopeful

  1059. thinking.

  1060. This lame beggar,

  1061. his life was

  1062. changed.

  1063. He now can

  1064. enter the temple

  1065. and worship

  1066. God.

  1067. Because his

  1068. body is

  1069. fixed.

  1070. Because Jesus

  1071. has healed

  1072. him.

  1073. There's a story

  1074. in the Old

  1075. Testament in

  1076. 2 Samuel

  1077. by the name

  1078. of Mephibosheth.

  1079. I don't know

  1080. if you know

  1081. Mephibosheth.

  1082. Mephibosheth is a

  1083. descendant of

  1084. Jonathan who is

  1085. the son of

  1086. Saul.

  1087. Saul and

  1088. Jonathan are

  1089. long gone.

  1090. David wants

  1091. to bless the

  1092. lineage of

  1093. Saul as

  1094. David does.

  1095. He's a man

  1096. after God's

  1097. own heart.

  1098. And David

  1099. asks a servant,

  1100. he says,

  1101. is there anybody

  1102. left in the

  1103. line of Saul

  1104. that I can

  1105. bless?

  1106. And the man

  1107. says,

  1108. yes,

  1109. there is one.

  1110. Go get him

  1111. please.

  1112. So he goes

  1113. and gets him

  1114. and brings him

  1115. and of course

  1116. Mephibosheth is

  1117. a little scared

  1118. because David

  1119. was the one

  1120. by God's hand

  1121. who wiped

  1122. down his

  1123. father and

  1124. his grandfather

  1125. and was part

  1126. of that.

  1127. Now David

  1128. is king.

  1129. Mephibosheth

  1130. was crippled

  1131. at the age

  1132. of five.

  1133. He had

  1134. nothing to do

  1135. with it.

  1136. His maidservant

  1137. or whoever it

  1138. was actually

  1139. dropped him

  1140. and he became

  1141. crippled and

  1142. his legs didn't

  1143. work anymore.

  1144. And David

  1145. seeks him

  1146. out and he

  1147. comes in

  1148. and he sees

  1149. that he's

  1150. crippled and

  1151. David says,

  1152. fear not

  1153. for I want

  1154. to bless you.

  1155. Long story

  1156. short,

  1157. he tells the

  1158. servant who

  1159. worked for

  1160. Saul's family,

  1161. whatever Saul

  1162. had,

  1163. he has it

  1164. all back.

  1165. His riches

  1166. are his.

  1167. And I want

  1168. you and all

  1169. his servants

  1170. to work for

  1171. Mephibosheth

  1172. because I

  1173. want him

  1174. to have food

  1175. to eat

  1176. and have

  1177. a living.

  1178. And David

  1179. says,

  1180. but Mephibosheth

  1181. is going to

  1182. sit with me

  1183. at my table.

  1184. That's what

  1185. Jesus does.

  1186. Jesus says,

  1187. you are mine

  1188. and you are

  1189. mine and you

  1190. are mine and

  1191. you are mine

  1192. and you are

  1193. glorifying my

  1194. name on earth

  1195. and you are

  1196. working your

  1197. tails off for

  1198. me and you

  1199. will sit

  1200. at my table

  1201. with me.

  1202. He has

  1203. opened his

  1204. table up to

  1205. you and to

  1206. me.

  1207. You are

  1208. going to

  1209. celebrate and

  1210. participate in

  1211. the Lord's

  1212. Supper in a

  1213. few minutes

  1214. and Nathan

  1215. is going to

  1216. lead that

  1217. and that

  1218. is Jesus

  1219. inviting you

  1220. to his

  1221. table.

  1222. You have

  1223. been invited

  1224. to join

  1225. him and the

  1226. people around

  1227. you have

  1228. been invited

  1229. to sit

  1230. with the

  1231. king.

  1232. But they

  1233. need to know,

  1234. they need to

  1235. hear,

  1236. they need

  1237. to see

  1238. the hope

  1239. that you

  1240. and you

  1241. and all

  1242. of us

  1243. have in

  1244. this room

  1245. who are

  1246. in Christ

  1247. Jesus.

  1248. Hope

  1249. changes

  1250. everything.

  1251. Mephibosheth's

  1252. life has been

  1253. changed.

  1254. Circumstances

  1255. are still the

  1256. same.

  1257. He's still

  1258. crippled.

  1259. He still

  1260. wobbles.

  1261. He's dependent

  1262. on other

  1263. people.

  1264. But David

  1265. said,

  1266. you will sit

  1267. with me

  1268. until you

  1269. die.

  1270. You will

  1271. sit with

  1272. the king.

  1273. And hope

  1274. changes

  1275. everything.

  1276. Today,

  1277. Jamie joked

  1278. around with

  1279. me about

  1280. this and

  1281. I'm going

  1282. to mention

  1283. it.

  1284. Today marks

  1285. 23 years

  1286. ago on

  1287. this day

  1288. that we

  1289. had our

  1290. first date.

  1291. Took her

  1292. to a pizza

  1293. place.

  1294. Got her

  1295. the,

  1296. yeah,

  1297. big time.

  1298. Play ya.

  1299. Took her,

  1300. picked out

  1301. the wrong

  1302. thing to

  1303. drink for

  1304. her,

  1305. winter.

  1306. She is

  1307. the light

  1308. in my

  1309. sky.

  1310. She is

  1311. by rock

  1312. a lot of

  1313. times here

  1314. on earth.

  1315. And I've

  1316. asked her

  1317. to come

  1318. and share

  1319. a story

  1320. that she'll

  1321. do a way

  1322. better job

  1323. than me

  1324. about some

  1325. of the

  1326. things that's

  1327. going on

  1328. that we're

  1329. a part

  1330. of in

  1331. Memphis.

  1332. Let me

  1333. just say

  1334. it would

  1335. take hours

  1336. to tell

  1337. you all

  1338. the things

  1339. that God

  1340. has done

  1341. or is

  1342. doing.

  1343. The way

  1344. that he's

  1345. provided for

  1346. us,

  1347. the people

  1348. he's given

  1349. us favor

  1350. with,

  1351. the way

  1352. the Spirit

  1353. has moved

  1354. and led

  1355. us to do

  1356. certain things

  1357. that didn't

  1358. make any

  1359. sense.

  1360. But she's

  1361. going to

  1362. share,

  1363. and then I'm

  1364. going to

  1365. pray,

  1366. and then I

  1367. think Nathan's

  1368. coming up

  1369. after that.

  1370. Good morning.

  1371. He makes

  1372. me teary

  1373. before I even

  1374. get up here.

  1375. Those of

  1376. you who

  1377. know me

  1378. well know

  1379. I'm a

  1380. crier,

  1381. so forgive

  1382. me.

  1383. When Chris

  1384. asked me to

  1385. share one

  1386. story, I

  1387. thought that

  1388. wasn't very

  1389. fair.

  1390. How do

  1391. you choose

  1392. one story

  1393. when all

  1394. that is

  1395. happening

  1396. around us

  1397. is woven

  1398. into this

  1399. beautiful

  1400. tapestry

  1401. that's organic

  1402. and it's

  1403. alive and it

  1404. can't be

  1405. compartmentalized?

  1406. So when we

  1407. come back to

  1408. visit you and

  1409. you say,

  1410. how is it

  1411. going?

  1412. I know

  1413. you're

  1414. earnest in

  1415. asking,

  1416. and we

  1417. say it's

  1418. good.

  1419. It's

  1420. good.

  1421. We say

  1422. it with

  1423. such vagueness

  1424. because how

  1425. do you?

  1426. How do you,

  1427. apart from

  1428. hours and

  1429. hours of

  1430. sitting together

  1431. and recounting

  1432. all the

  1433. stories and

  1434. all the

  1435. details and

  1436. all the

  1437. things,

  1438. it'd be

  1439. like if I

  1440. asked you

  1441. what's new.

  1442. You say

  1443. one or two

  1444. tidbits,

  1445. but apart

  1446. from having

  1447. that deep

  1448. conversation,

  1449. it's hard

  1450. to just

  1451. recount one

  1452. story.

  1453. So it's

  1454. a bit

  1455. unfair.

  1456. So forgive

  1457. me for,

  1458. and Chris,

  1459. also,

  1460. for only

  1461. being able

  1462. to serve

  1463. you just

  1464. a small

  1465. sliver of

  1466. the Memphis

  1467. pie.

  1468. But I'll

  1469. try.

  1470. The family

  1471. I'll tell you

  1472. about today,

  1473. they literally

  1474. walked into

  1475. our lives

  1476. this past

  1477. summer.

  1478. Two of

  1479. the boys

  1480. from the

  1481. Coleman family

  1482. came strolling

  1483. into our

  1484. yard.

  1485. We were

  1486. outside hanging

  1487. out with

  1488. other neighborhood

  1489. kids.

  1490. A lot of

  1491. you heard

  1492. this summer

  1493. when I

  1494. came about

  1495. the favor

  1496. we gained

  1497. in our

  1498. neighborhood

  1499. that we

  1500. were having

  1501. 20-plus

  1502. children at

  1503. our house

  1504. every day.

  1505. They wanted

  1506. to know

  1507. if we

  1508. would donate

  1509. to their

  1510. basketball

  1511. team.

  1512. The scheme

  1513. later got

  1514. them busted

  1515. by the

  1516. police.

  1517. I didn't

  1518. give them

  1519. money.

  1520. I wasn't

  1521. foolish enough

  1522. to do

  1523. that.

  1524. I told

  1525. them that I

  1526. had to be

  1527. loyal to

  1528. some of the

  1529. other boys

  1530. who hang

  1531. out with us

  1532. and are on

  1533. a team.

  1534. But we

  1535. talked for a

  1536. while and I

  1537. asked lots of

  1538. questions,

  1539. of course,

  1540. and got to

  1541. know them a

  1542. little bit

  1543. better.

  1544. Where are you

  1545. coming from?

  1546. Where are you

  1547. going?

  1548. over the

  1549. next several

  1550. weeks,

  1551. they continued

  1552. to come

  1553. back,

  1554. bringing

  1555. slowly more

  1556. and more

  1557. of their

  1558. family to

  1559. meet us.

  1560. Eventually,

  1561. they brought

  1562. their mom

  1563. and she

  1564. sat on our

  1565. couch.

  1566. She explained

  1567. her mental

  1568. illness.

  1569. She expressed

  1570. her wonder

  1571. at the fact

  1572. that the

  1573. Department of

  1574. Family and

  1575. Children's

  1576. Services

  1577. has never

  1578. caught up

  1579. with them.

  1580. She groaned

  1581. about not

  1582. having clothes

  1583. for her

  1584. seven children.

  1585. They had

  1586. all been

  1587. thrown out

  1588. during the

  1589. most recent

  1590. eviction.

  1591. There are

  1592. seven children.

  1593. There are

  1594. nine people

  1595. total in

  1596. a one-bedroom

  1597. house.

  1598. It sits

  1599. about a

  1600. quarter mile

  1601. from us

  1602. on the

  1603. busy main

  1604. road.

  1605. We're just

  1606. slightly off

  1607. that road.

  1608. So, you

  1609. know, anybody

  1610. who comes

  1611. down that

  1612. road can

  1613. see our

  1614. house.

  1615. It sits

  1616. next to a

  1617. gas station

  1618. that can

  1619. only be

  1620. described as

  1621. sketch for

  1622. the illegal

  1623. things that

  1624. happen there.

  1625. The house

  1626. looks uninhabitable.

  1627. As you can

  1628. imagine, these

  1629. kids don't hang

  1630. out at their

  1631. own house because

  1632. how do you

  1633. hang out at a

  1634. house where

  1635. there's nowhere

  1636. to actually

  1637. hang?

  1638. They often

  1639. roam around in

  1640. sort of a

  1641. pack with

  1642. other kids

  1643. whose situations

  1644. and homes are

  1645. similar.

  1646. This pack of

  1647. children, as they

  1648. roam around the

  1649. neighborhood, they

  1650. lie, they

  1651. manipulate, they

  1652. steal.

  1653. They generally

  1654. create an

  1655. interesting wake

  1656. of havoc wherever

  1657. they go.

  1658. School?

  1659. Well, we

  1660. couldn't get them

  1661. enrolled until the

  1662. school had already

  1663. been in for a

  1664. couple of weeks.

  1665. kids.

  1666. By week three,

  1667. the middle

  1668. schoolers were

  1669. banned from the

  1670. bus for

  1671. stabbing another

  1672. child.

  1673. By week 12, it

  1674. was clear that

  1675. after multiple

  1676. suspensions, the

  1677. two of the boys

  1678. that were at our

  1679. neighborhood school

  1680. wouldn't be able

  1681. to stay.

  1682. They are now

  1683. headed to an

  1684. alternative school.

  1685. One of the

  1686. biggest problems,

  1687. mom is too

  1688. tired, she's too

  1689. apathetic to walk

  1690. her younger kids

  1691. to and from

  1692. school.

  1693. She isn't

  1694. willing to

  1695. intercede for

  1696. them and she

  1697. isn't willing to

  1698. fight for them

  1699. and so they

  1700. fight all the

  1701. way there and

  1702. all the way back

  1703. home.

  1704. What else do you

  1705. do when you're

  1706. bullied?

  1707. If I can connect

  1708. with them before

  1709. school, I'm

  1710. talking the

  1711. oldest down off

  1712. of whatever

  1713. anger ledge

  1714. he's sitting on.

  1715. He usually

  1716. shows up, fists

  1717. bald, tears

  1718. flowing out of

  1719. his face.

  1720. I'm helping he

  1721. and his brother

  1722. tuck stained

  1723. shirts and fix

  1724. ill-fitting

  1725. belts and

  1726. pants and

  1727. usually carefully

  1728. piecing together

  1729. their shoes so

  1730. that they won't

  1731. cause too much

  1732. embarrassment during

  1733. the day.

  1734. We fix the

  1735. little sister, we

  1736. wipe the crust

  1737. from her eyes

  1738. and nobody's

  1739. eaten yet so

  1740. there aren't

  1741. milk stains

  1742. and things.

  1743. They depend on

  1744. the school for

  1745. their breakfast

  1746. and their lunch

  1747. and usually are

  1748. not fed at

  1749. dinner or on

  1750. the weekends.

  1751. We try to get

  1752. her to smile

  1753. erasing the

  1754. perpetual void

  1755. look that

  1756. usually fills

  1757. her eyes.

  1758. lots of

  1759. talking before

  1760. they go into

  1761. the school

  1762. because they're

  1763. already mad.

  1764. You can do

  1765. this.

  1766. Do your best

  1767. today.

  1768. Don't worry

  1769. about what

  1770. other people

  1771. say.

  1772. I love you.

  1773. We hug

  1774. them big, long

  1775. I care for

  1776. you type of

  1777. hugs.

  1778. If we connect

  1779. after school

  1780. we'll walk

  1781. together for a

  1782. little while

  1783. until our paths

  1784. diverge.

  1785. They might have

  1786. some small

  1787. like tattletale

  1788. type things to

  1789. report but they

  1790. aren't like our

  1791. children where

  1792. they're talking

  1793. about anything

  1794. they learned or

  1795. they did in

  1796. school or that

  1797. they're excited

  1798. about the upcoming

  1799. field trips.

  1800. Nothing like

  1801. that.

  1802. They're usually

  1803. just the same

  1804. questions.

  1805. Number one,

  1806. can we have a

  1807. ride home?

  1808. Number two,

  1809. can we get some

  1810. food to eat?

  1811. Number three,

  1812. can we play at

  1813. your house?

  1814. And number four,

  1815. are we having

  1816. the shill community

  1817. this week?

  1818. Forgive me for

  1819. not being able to

  1820. fully describe the

  1821. overwhelming

  1822. desperation.

  1823. Their jaded

  1824. spirits.

  1825. Their smell.

  1826. And their

  1827. hardness.

  1828. Here's the

  1829. thing.

  1830. The Coleman

  1831. family is a

  1832. norm on our

  1833. side of the

  1834. neighborhood.

  1835. They're the

  1836. norm in the

  1837. urban school

  1838. where I teach.

  1839. In fact,

  1840. their story is

  1841. not the worst,

  1842. most seemingly

  1843. hopeless story I

  1844. could have

  1845. shared.

  1846. I, however,

  1847. refuse to view

  1848. them as a

  1849. statistic.

  1850. You know,

  1851. the old pipeline

  1852. to prison.

  1853. elementary schools

  1854. are a pipeline

  1855. to prison is

  1856. very true

  1857. where we live.

  1858. You can look at

  1859. these children and

  1860. already see how

  1861. if there is not

  1862. intervention,

  1863. that's exactly

  1864. where they're

  1865. headed.

  1866. I know the

  1867. only hope for

  1868. them is Christ.

  1869. So,

  1870. can we clean

  1871. them up enough

  1872. and make them

  1873. smell great and

  1874. get them a better

  1875. house and maybe a

  1876. better car and

  1877. better medicine and

  1878. make them act more

1879. like us all in the

  1880. hope that Christ

  1881. will save them?

  1882. Was that your

  1883. experience when

  1884. Christ sought you

  1885. out?

  1886. No.

  1887. We were all the

  1888. Coleman's.

  1889. We were dead in

  1890. our sin.

  1891. You weren't born

  1892. more privileged

  1893. to know Christ.

  1894. You weren't chosen

  1895. for Christ because

  1896. of the color of

  1897. your skin.

  1898. You weren't chosen

  1899. for Christ because

  1900. you smelled good.

  1901. You weren't chosen

  1902. for Christ because

  1903. of the family you

  1904. grew up in, the

  1905. schools you attended,

  1906. your natural

  1907. intelligence.

  1908. He sought you

  1909. out.

  1910. And if you

  1911. believe anything

  1912. different, shame

  1913. on you.

  1914. And so, I

  1915. choose to believe

  1916. that Patrice, the

  1917. mom, and Kayla,

  1918. Chris, Martavius,

  1919. Quentin, Tyler,

  1920. Nalia, and Joseph

  1921. are all loved by

  1922. God and are

  1923. gently being wooed

  1924. by his spirit.

  1925. I feel honored that

1926. we get to be people

  1927. who are intentionally

  1928. loving them, many

  1929. more like them in

  1930. our neighborhood.

1931. My hope is not that

  1932. the Lord will save

  1933. them to then make

  1934. them look, smell,

  1935. and be like us.

1936. My hope is that the

  1937. Lord will save them

  1938. to look, smell, and

  1939. be like him.

1940. I want them to be

  1941. image bearers of

  1942. Christ.

1943. I want them to be

  1944. part of his body,

  1945. adopted sons and

  1946. daughters.

1947. Will you join us in

  1948. praying big prayers

  1949. for the families in

  1950. our neighborhood?

  1951. Will you begin to

  1952. look for the

  1953. Coleman's around you?

  1954. You won't have to

  1955. look far.

  1956. We've lived in
