  1. Amen. Thank you for that song.

  2. We do not yet live in that final day of great rejoicing, but we can certainly look to it with great expectation.

  3. ! It seems so often that sickness and sadness reigns in this day, but our God does indeed.

  4. I think today we're going to have to accept as part of the normal noise of the room, our typical children,

  5. being in the service with us, which we're so happy for because we love children.

  6. I think we're also going to have to include in that coughing and sniffling, which we don't love so much.

  7. It's part of that in-between, part of the curse that we deal with such things.

  8. I'm really glad to be back with you in this manner this morning, able to preach as I've been in and out and sick.

  9. We had the Advent season the past four weeks, so we took some turns preaching,

  10. and the turn I was meant to have, I had to give up.

  11. Clay very graciously preached on my behalf as I was diagnosed with pneumonia just two weeks ago,

  12. and I'm gaining in strength.

  13. I think I've felt a bit obligated to say that each time I've seen you that I've been getting a little bit better.

  14. I know last Sunday I told Stan that I was at 80%, and then at 90, I saw him at the grocery store last night,

  15. I said 95%. I'm probably being a little generous in all of that.

  16. Sometimes I'm feeling like I'm drowning from the inside,

  17. so forgive me if I take a moment and a break in the midst of preaching to clear myself in that way.

  18. Prior to Advent season, we were working through the book of Ecclesiastes.

  19. And I think, if I'm not mistaken, we were seven sermons in.

  20. I think we got to chapter 2, verse 8, somewhere in that realm as we were marching through the book.

  21. We're going to take a break from it.

  22. We're going to stop preaching in Ecclesiastes.

  23. And here's why.

  24. The book of Ecclesiastes is an interesting book.

  25. It's written. It's unique in all of biblical literature.

  26. Certainly unique as a wisdom book.

  27. And it's a difficult book to lay some bearing on because it has no real discernible outline.

  28. It at times really seems like the ranting of a madman.

  29. And you have to, in each and every time you pick up the book of Ecclesiastes,

  30. you really need to either read it in a sitting or in the preaching of it.

  31. You've got to get to the conclusion.

  32. You've got to bring some sanity to what the preacher is saying in the book.

  33. And his summary of it, we find in a single verse in Ecclesiastes 12, 13,

  34. he says,

  35. The end of the matter, all has been heard, fear God, and keep His commandments.

  36. For this is the whole duty of man.

  37. And he gives us some reason for that in verse 14.

  38. Verse 14,

  39. For God will bring every deed into judgment with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

  40. And so he's saying to us that we need to rightly recognize,

  41. we need to understand that we are created beings,

  42. and we have a creator who has a standard.

  43. This is the fear God, and we are meant to keep that standard.

  44. The book of Ecclesiastes just drips with the gospel because it presents us with the great problem.

  45. And all of the things in the world, all of the vanities, all of the pointlessness of the world,

  46. he brings us this summary of this,

  47. and we're left with this issue of fearing God and keeping commandments.

  48. This is our duty as people, certainly as Christian people.

  49. So we're going to take a step away from the book.

  50. And we're going to go to the book of Jonah.

  51. So let me invite you to turn there.

  52. The Old Testament prophet Jonah.

  53. As an example of a man that didn't do this well.

  54. The book is characterized by Jonah's rebellion against God's command.

  55. And it so well for us serves Jonah's life as a wonderful backdrop to consider the character of God

  56. as we consider what it means to fear Him and to keep His commandments.

  57. And so, kind of hear this as a continuation of our time in Ecclesiastes,

  58. as a biblical example of how this is meant to work out in our lives.

  59. Now, my apologies to you if this is incredibly disappointing,

  60. if you were really hoping to work all the way through the book of Ecclesiastes.

  61. So to that, I would just say, if that's a desire of yours, stick around.

  62. Maybe build a house in the area.

  63. If you're young, get married and have children.

  64. And maybe at some point we'll revisit together the book of Ecclesiastes.

  65. I'll make no promises, but likely we will at some point get into it.

  66. But for the next three weeks, I want to preach from the book of Jonah.

  67. I want to structure it in this way.

  68. The first week being this morning,

  69. we're going to look at the rebellion found in the book,

  70. the theme of rebellion in the book of Jonah.

  71. This morning we're going to look at chapter 1, verses 1-16.

  72. Secondly, so next Sunday,

  73. we're going to look at the repentance that's found in the book of Jonah

  74. by looking at chapter 1, verse 17, through chapter 3, verse 10.

  75. And then finally, on the third week,

  76. the regret found in chapter 4.

  77. So let's look at together, as I read to you,

  78. Jonah chapter 1, verses 1-16.

    Jonah 1:1–16

  79. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

  80. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it,

  81. for their evil has come up before me.

  82. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  83. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.

  84. So he paid the fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish

  85. and away from the presence of the Lord.

  86. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea,

  87. and there was a mighty tempest on the sea,

  88. so that the ship threatened to break up.

  89. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God.

  90. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea

  91. to lighten it for them.

  92. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship

  93. and had lain down and was fast asleep.

  94. So the captain came and said to him,

  95. What do you mean, you sleeper?

  96. Arise, call out to your God.

  97. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us that we may not perish.

  98. And they said to one another,

  99. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  100. Then they said to him,

  101. Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  102. What is your occupation?

  103. And where do you come from?

  104. What is your country?

  105. And of what people are you?

  106. And he said to them,

  107. and I love this,

  108. I am a Hebrew,

  109. and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,

  110. who made the sea and the dry land.

  111. Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him,

  112. What is this that you have done?

  113. For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord,

  114. because he had told them.

  115. Then they said to him,

  116. What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us?

  117. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

  118. He said to them,

  119. Pick me up and hurl me into the sea.

  120. Then the sea will quiet down for you,

  121. for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

  122. Nevertheless, the men rode hard to get back to dry land,

  123. but they could not,

  124. for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

  125. Therefore they called out to the Lord,

  126. O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life,

  127. and lay not on us innocent blood,

  128. for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  129. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,

  130. and the sea ceased from its raging.

  131. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly,

  132. and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  133. I think that most of us are fairly familiar with the story of Jonah.

  134. We at least know the plot line of the story of Jonah.

  135. We're aware of his rebellion,

  136. and therefore what happens to him as he's swallowed up by a great fish.

  137. But the rebellion in the story of Jonah goes beyond Jonah himself.

  138. It's not just Jonah's rebellion that we ought to see together.

  139. And so I want to look at that,

  140. and then I want to step away from that a bit to look at God's character,

  141. as we see in these first 16 verses.

  142. So notice first, Nineveh's rebellion.

  143. Chapter 2, the word of the Lord to Jonah is,

  144. to arise and go to Nineveh, that great city,

  145. and call out against it,

  146. for their evil has come up before me.

  147. The people who lived in Nineveh were Assyrians,

  148. and they were wretchedly wicked,

  149. as I will show you in just a moment.

  150. So they were rebellious against the Lord God.

  151. Jonah's message, you'll see in chapter 3, verse 4,

  152. is yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  153. So God is bringing judgment,

  154. and a call of judgment down on Nineveh,

  155. unless they repent and turn from their ways.

  156. Notice also the Mariner's Rebellion,

  157. those who are sailing the ship.

  158. As they're in this storm,

  159. they call out to all of their gods.

  160. It seems that they all have a god of their own making,

  161. apparently.

  162. These gods are silent,

  163. they do not answer,

  164. but yet they don't worship the one true God,

  165. and are also in need of repentance.

  166. And we see them in this text,

  167. they do in fact repent,

  168. and we'll talk a bit more about that next week.

  169. And then certainly highlighted in the midst of all this

  170. is Jonah's rebellion.

  171. Jonah's given a very clear command.

  172. I love how the author,

  173. we don't know who the author of Jonah is,

  174. but gets right to the point.

  175. In this first couple of verses,

  176. there's a call to Jonah to go to Nineveh,

  177. and then very quickly in verse 3,

  178. but Jonah.

  179. Despite what God had commanded him to do,

  180. but Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish

  181. from the presence of the Lord.

  182. What caused Jonah to run in the other direction?

  183. Was it the size of the task?

  184. It's a major task that God put before Jonah.

  185. Nineveh, called that great city in chapter 1, verse 2,

  186. took three days to cross.

  187. Chapter 3, verse 3,

  188. probably because they're counting the suburbs

  189. around Nineveh as well.

  190. Nineveh itself was 18,000 acres

  191. within the city walls.

  192. It contained parks and a zoo.

  193. It was the Assyrian capital in that day.

  194. The wall was 100 feet tall

  195. and 30 feet thick.

  196. In chapter 4, verse 11,

  197. God says that there are 120,000 small children,

  198. we presume.

  199. Persons who don't know their right hand

  200. from their left hand.

  201. Hopefully, we know about what age that is.

  202. Small children, 120,000 of them.

  203. What a task for a single preacher.

  204. Would you be overwhelmed by such a task?

  205. Was that the issue before Jonah?

  206. Was it the danger of the mission?

  207. The Assyrian people were extremely wicked.

  208. In Nahum's prophecy, chapter 3, verses 1-4,

  209. he's speaking out against these very people

  210. that Jonah's been asked to go to.

  211. And he writes,

  212. Woe to the bloody city,

  213. all full of lies and plunder,

  214. no end to the prey,

  215. the crack of the whip and rumble of the wheel,

  216. galloping horse and bounding chariot,

  217. horsemen charging, flashing sword,

  218. and glittering spear,

  219. hosts of slain,

  220. heaps of corpses,

  221. dead bodies without end.

  222. They stumble over the bodies,

  223. and all for the countless whorings of the prostitute,

  224. graceful and of deadly charms,

  225. who betrays nations with her whorings

  226. and people with her charms.

  227. Incredibly evil,

  228. incredibly dangerous people

  229. that Jonah is asked to go to

  230. as a solitary preacher

  231. and preach to them destruction.

  232. Were these the reasons that he didn't go?

  233. The size of the task

  234. or the danger of the mission?

  235. No.

  236. These weren't the reasons.

  237. So why then?

  238. Why then did Jonah go

  239. in the opposite direction

  240. from the place that God had asked him to go?

  241. Nineveh is about 600 miles northeast of Jerusalem.

  242. It's modern-day Mosul, Iraq.

  243. Joppa is 30 miles northwest,

  244. which is modern-day Jaffa, Israel.

  245. And Tarshish, we're not sure about,

  246. but it's likely located in Spain.

  247. So get that picture.

  248. He's meant to go one direction.

  249. He walks out of the front of his house,

  250. and rather than turning right

  251. to head down the road,

  252. he turns left.

  253. He goes in directly the opposite direction

  254. to get on a ship

  255. and to sail far away

  256. across the Mediterranean.

  257. Why did he flee in this way?

  258. Why did his flight take this course?

  259. The book of Jonah answers that for us.

  260. In chapter 4, verse 2,

  261. after we see the repentance of the Ninevites,

  262. he said,

  263. O Lord, is not this what I said

  264. when I was yet in my country?

  265. That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish,

  266. for I knew that you are a gracious God

  267. and merciful,

  268. slow to anger,

  269. and abounding in steadfast love,

  270. and relenting from disaster.

  271. Jonah hated the Ninevites.

  272. They were enemies of Israel,

  273. and he knew of God's character

  274. that he was merciful,

  275. and that if he were to go

  276. and preach destruction to these people

  277. and they were to turn from their ways,

  278. that God would show them mercy.

  279. And he did not want that to be the case.

  280. I fear that in so many ways,

  281. we do this as a people.

  282. James Montgomery Boyce,

  283. in his commentary on Jonah,

  284. says,

  285. we can understand the geography

  286. and Jonah's motives

  287. if we can imagine the word of the Lord

  288. coming to a Jew who lived in New York

  289. during World War II,

  290. telling him to go to Berlin

  291. to preach to Nazi Germany,

  292. and instead of this,

  293. he goes to San Francisco

  294. and takes a boat for Hong Kong.

  295. And this is the issue before us.

  296. This is the life of a man

  297. that we ought to filter

  298. our own lives through.

  299. Who are your Ninevites?

  300. This could be on a grand

  301. and political scale.

  302. This could also be interpersonal,

  303. an individual that you just don't care for,

  304. or a group of people

  305. that you just don't care for.

  306. I remember back to my high school days.

  307. I was not a big fan of the jocks

  308. at our school,

  309. with some good reason.

  310. But it's God's mercy

  311. not good for them

  312. should they not also repent

  313. and believe.

  314. And we categorize people

  315. and we break them up in this way

  316. and we should not.

  317. So I want to show you,

  318. with that as the backdrop,

  319. three things about our God.

  320. I want to show you God's purpose

  321. in this text,

  322. God's power,

  323. and God's presence.

  324. And God's purpose in this world,

  325. I want to sum up in this way,

  326. is to make Himself known.

  327. To seek His own glory,

  328. His own acclaim,

  329. to make Himself known

  330. primarily through the merciful redemption

  331. of His people.

  332. Let me give you some text to this end.

  333. Isaiah 43, 6 and 7.

  334. God says,

  335. I will say to the north,

  336. give up,

  337. and to the south,

  338. do not withhold.

  339. Bring My sons from afar

  340. and My daughters from the end of the earth.

  341. Everyone who is called by My name,

  342. whom I created for My glory,

  343. whom I formed and I made.

  344. God has always had

  345. worldwide intentions

  346. for His glory.

  347. He has always intended to save peoples

  348. from every tribe

  349. and every nation

  350. and every tongue.

  351. This theme maintains itself

  352. all throughout the Old Testament.

  353. God didn't just intend

  354. to have Israel as His people.

  355. The book of Jonah

  356. is a wonderful expression of that.

  357. Go to the great city of Nineveh

  358. and preach destruction

  359. that they may turn to Me.

  360. There's always been an inclusion

  361. in God's people.

  362. Habakkuk 2, 14.

  363. God says,

  364. For the earth will be filled

  365. with the knowledge of the glory

  366. of the Lord

  367. as the waters

  368. cover the sea.

  369. For time,

  370. there's two Old Testament

  371. examples for you.

  372. This has always been

  373. God's intention.

  374. How is it that He accomplishes

  375. this great work

  376. of the glory of His name

  377. by the redemption

  378. of His people?

  379. He accomplishes it

  380. through preaching.

  381. And I don't mean

  382. only this kind

  383. of preaching.

  384. I mean the kind of preaching

  385. that's so often

  386. translated in that way.

  387. The Greek word means

  388. gossiping.

  389. Like in Acts 8, 4.

  390. When the early church

  391. is split up

  392. because of persecution,

  393. it says that they went

  394. about preaching

  395. the Word of God.

  396. It means that they told

  397. anybody and everybody

  398. as they're dispersed

  399. back across

  400. the known world

  401. about the good news

  402. of Jesus Christ.

  403. How is it that we find

  404. Christianity

  405. on three continents

  406. in one generation?

  407. Because God's people

  408. preach the good news

  409. of Jesus Christ.

  410. They saw that they were

  411. meant to go

  412. and to make disciples.

  413. Romans chapter 10,

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  414. 13 through 17.

  415. Beloved, hear me.

  416. I often read

  417. these common texts

  418. and I think,

  419. oh, I need to come up

  420. with more creative texts.

  421. Right?

  422. That people haven't heard

  423. so much.

  424. But I wonder if I say

  425. Romans 10, 13 through 17

  426. if you go,

  427. I don't read that.

  428. You should.

  429. Okay, so hear me.

  430. You should.

  431. For everyone

  432. who calls

  433. on the name of the Lord

  434. will be saved.

  435. Do we care about people

  436. to that degree?

  437. Right?

  438. Even our Ninevites

  439. that we would want people

  440. to have what we have.

  441. Right?

  442. The mercy of God

  443. to us in Jesus Christ.

  444. Everyone who calls

  445. on the name of the Lord

  446. will be saved.

  447. How then will they call

  448. on Him

  449. in whom they have not believed?

  450. And how are they

  451. to believe in Him

  452. of whom they have never heard?

  453. And how are they to hear

  454. without someone preaching?

  455. This is that Greek word.

  456. Don't think that this

  457. excludes you.

  458. Right?

  459. This isn't just a text

  460. for the pastor.

  461. This is a text

  462. for the believer.

  463. And how are they to preach

  464. unless they are sent?

  465. As it is written,

  466. how beautiful are the feet

  467. of those

  468. who preach

  469. the good news.

  470. But they have not all

  471. obeyed the gospel.

  472. For Isaiah says,

  473. Lord,

  474. who has believed

  475. what He has heard

  476. from us?

  477. So there's not a promise

  478. that everyone's going to turn

  479. to Christ.

  480. Right?

  481. We can see that here.

  482. Right?

  483. But there's a command to go.

  484. Verse 17,

  485. So faith comes from hearing

  486. and hearing

  487. through the word of Christ.

  488. Jonah seemed to understand this

  489. better than we do

  490. so often.

  491. He didn't want to go

  492. because he knew

  493. they probably would believe

  494. that God would save

  495. their souls.

  496. Psalm 96.3,

  497. the exhortation,

  498. declare His glory

  499. among the nations,

  500. His marvelous works

  501. among all the peoples.

  502. Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  503. another text

  504. you should be very familiar with.

  505. Right?

  506. Just the first part

  507. of verse 19,

  508. Go therefore

  509. and make disciples

  510. of all nations.

  511. Acts 1.8,

  512. You will receive power

  513. when the Holy Spirit

  514. has come upon you

  515. and you will be

  516. my witnesses

  517. in Jerusalem,

  518. in all Judea

  519. and Samaria

  520. and to the end

  521. of the earth.

  522. If we are disciples

  523. of Jesus Christ,

  524. we will care about

  525. what Jesus Christ

  526. cares about.

  527. Luke 19.10,

  528. For the Son of Man

  529. came to seek

  530. and to save

  531. the lost.

  532. This is the means

  533. by which

  534. He carries the Gospel

  535. to all peoples.

  536. And don't hear me

  537. just making a mission call.

  538. Certainly include that

  539. in this.

  540. Some of you may need

  541. to go

  542. and go to the ends

  543. of the earth,

  544. to the weirdest

  545. and most remote places

  546. where people live.

  547. All of us need to go

  548. to wherever we're going

  549. this week.

  550. To see that we are

  551. first and foremost

  552. disciples of Jesus Christ.

  553. Everything else

  554. falls underneath that.

  555. Everything else

  556. is subservient

  557. to the fact

  558. that we're God's people

  559. and we're meant

  560. to take the good news

  561. of Christ

  562. to everyone

  563. everywhere.

  564. To be messengers

  565. of the mercy

  566. of God.

  567. And this book

  568. just drips

  569. with that.

  570. God displays

  571. abundant

  572. mercy

  573. toward mankind

  574. in the story

  575. of Jonah.

  576. I am always

  577. so thankful

  578. for the conjunction

  579. but.

  580. You see that

  581. this command

  582. is given to

  583. Jonah.

  584. Verse 3,

  585. but Jonah.

  586. He's given a command.

  587. Instead,

  588. he goes and does

  589. this thing.

  590. And instead of God

  591. doing the warranted

  592. thing for Jonah's

  593. rebellion,

  594. right?

  595. I read these first

  596. three verses

  597. and in my mind

  598. I want God

  599. to smush Jonah.

  600. Be done with him.

  601. Right?

  602. Ah, rebellious.

  603. Go on to the next guy.

  604. Right?

  605. Somebody else

  606. in Jerusalem

  607. certainly would have

  608. gone.

  609. But verse 4

  610. says,

  611. but the Lord.

  612. And there's this

  613. great intervention

  614. on his behalf.

  615. He sends a great

  616. wind and a great

  617. fish because

  618. he loves

  619. Jonah.

  620. Because he's

  621. merciful toward

  622. Jonah.

  623. He's got this

  624. mission for him

  625. that he intends

  626. to carry out

  627. and he does not

  628. need him to

  629. accomplish this

  630. thing.

  631. Could God not

  632. in some other

  633. way preach the

  634. good news to the

  635. people of Nineveh?

  636. Certainly he could.

  637. But he chooses

  638. to use Jonah

  639. and to express

  640. his mercy

  641. through the

  642. work of Jonah.

  643. He shows this

  644. abundant mercy

  645. to him.

  646. And he does it

  647. on more than

  648. one occasion.

  649. He does it

  650. again in chapter

  651. 4.

  652. Again, I want

  653. Jonah to be

  654. smushed by the

  655. thumb of God.

  656. But God

  657. stays his

  658. anger toward

  659. him.

  660. He shows mercy

  661. to the mariners.

  662. We see their

  663. repentance and he

  664. stays the storm

  665. for them once

  666. they throw Jonah.

  667. overboard.

  668. And he

  669. certainly shows

  670. mercy to the

  671. people of Nineveh

  672. as we see the

  673. greatest revival

  674. that has ever

  675. happened in all

  676. of history in

  677. the book of

  678. Jonah.

  679. We see God's

  680. purpose in

  681. Jonah.

  682. The redemption

  683. of people from

  684. every tribe,

  685. every nation,

  686. and every tongue.

  687. This includes

  688. all of the ways

  689. that we section

  690. ourselves out.

  691. This includes

  692. the hipsters.

  693. God's power.

  694. The second thing

  695. I want you to

  696. see.

  697. God's power.

  698. There's a number

  699. of things that we

  700. see in the text

  701. that we can speak

  702. about God's

  703. power.

  704. He calms a

  705. storm.

  706. Think about

  707. Jesus speaking

  708. to the storm

  709. on the Sea of

  710. Galilee and

  711. calming it.

  712. He commands

  713. a great fish.

  714. He's got power

  715. over the

  716. creation.

  717. We see that

  718. he changes

  719. hearts.

  720. We see that

  721. the Ninevites

  722. and the mariners

  723. turn to God.

  724. We see all

  725. this expression

  726. of God's

  727. power,

  728. but I'm

  729. referring

  730. specifically

  731. when I talk

  732. about God's

  733. power from

  734. this text

  735. to God's

  736. sovereignty.

  737. His ultimate

  738. and complete

  739. reign over

  740. all things.

  741. Nothing

  742. escapes

  743. God's

  744. control

  745. and power.

  746. And we seem

  747. as a people

  748. to have no

  749. trouble with

  750. God's sovereignty

  751. in the natural

  752. order of things.

  753. An example

  754. of this

  755. would be

  756. gravity.

  757. Have you ever

  758. heard a person

  759. complain?

  760. That God

  761. is in control

  762. of the way

  763. in which

  764. we stay

  765. on the ground?

  766. I never have.

  767. I'm thankful

  768. for it.

  769. I can rest

  770. in that fact

  771. that I know

  772. that I'm

  773. on the ground

  774. and gravity

  775. is going to

  776. function and

  777. continue to

  778. work.

  779. This is under

  780. God's purview.

  781. He is in

  782. control of

  783. this right

  784. now that

  785. we're where

  786. we are.

  787. We're held

  788. together.

  789. You're not

  790. going to float

  791. up out of

  792. your seats

  793. all of a

  794. sudden.

  795. Unless the

  796. sermon gets

  797. real good.

  798. You're going

  799. to stay put

  800. in your seats.

  801. We have

  802. no trouble

  803. with this

  804. kind of

  805. thing.

  806. We say,

  807. oh sure,

  808. God is

  809. sovereign and

  810. in control

  811. of that.

  812. The orbit

  813. of the planet.

  814. Yes,

  815. God is in

  816. control of

  817. that.

  818. But we

  819. seem to

  820. really struggle

  821. with it

  822. when it

  823. comes to

  824. the experience

  825. of life.

  826. Suddenly we

  827. become,

  828. because we

  829. experience

  830. something

  831. different,

  832. we become

  833. gods in

  834. ourselves.

  835. And we

  836. say,

  837. oh,

  838. we couldn't

  839. possibly be

  840. sovereign over

  841. all things.

  842. we struggle

  843. with it,

  844. with things

  845. like a

  846. wayward

  847. saint.

  848. I think

  849. all of us

  850. have been

  851. around long

  852. enough that

  853. we've seen

  854. a person who

  855. professes faith

  856. in Christ,

  857. who shows so

  858. much evidence

  859. of that,

  860. and then just

  861. seems in so

  862. many ways to

  863. rebel against

  864. God.

  865. To run

  866. off.

  867. People are

  868. coming to my

  869. mind that

  870. have been

  871. here and

  872. have left.

  873. And this is

  874. not the

  875. magical place.

  876. You've got to

  877. be here if

  878. you're a

  879. Christian.

  880. But they

  881. go off and

  882. with their

  883. life,

  884. they just

  885. kick against

  886. God.

  887. Does God

  888. not have the

  889. ability to

  890. actually crush

  891. our wills?

  892. Certainly He

  893. could,

  894. and sometimes

  895. I just

  896. wish that

  897. He would.

  898. That He

  899. would just

  900. actually make

  901. me a

  902. robot.

  903. I would

  904. be fine

  905. with that.

  906. Help me

  907. to walk

  908. in righteousness.

  909. So we

  910. struggle in

  911. this way.

  912. Jonah speaks

  913. to this.

  914. Jonah speaks

  915. to this.

  916. God is

  917. in control.

  918. His providence

  919. raised.

  920. Look at the

  921. way that He

  922. deals with

  923. Jonah.

  924. to accomplish

  925. His purpose

  926. with Jonah

  927. indirectly.

  928. Could God

  929. have, and

  930. certainly He

  931. has, there's

  932. some accounts

  933. of it in

  934. the Scripture,

  935. of changing

  936. somebody in

  937. a way that

  938. causes them

  939. to do a

  940. thing?

  941. Couldn't He

  942. have done

  943. that here,

  944. right?

  945. Couldn't

  946. verse 4

  947. read,

  948. but God,

  949. but the

  950. Lord,

  951. as He

  952. was turning,

  953. as He

  954. was going

  955. toward Joppa,

  956. changed His

  957. heart and

  958. caused Him

  959. to walk

  960. the other

  961. direction

  962. to

  963. Nineveh.

  964. Certainly,

  965. He could

  966. have.

  967. But here,

  968. God works

  969. indirectly.

  970. He works

  971. through

  972. circumstance,

  973. a great

  974. storm and

  975. a great

  976. fish.

  977. Jonah

  978. recognizes

  979. God's

  980. intervention

  981. in His

  982. repentance,

  983. which we'll

  984. talk about

  985. next week,

  986. and does

  987. the thing

  988. that God

  989. had said

  990. Him about

  991. doing.

  992. His

  993. providence

  994. reigns at

  995. all times.

  996. It never

  997. does it,

  998. even if our

  999. experience

  1000. doesn't seem

  1001. to affirm

  1002. that.

  1003. Beloved,

  1004. the Scripture

  1005. is our

  1006. great high

  1007. authority,

  1008. not our

  1009. experience.

  1010. Psalm 115.3,

  1011. Our God

  1012. is in the

  1013. heavens.

  1014. He does

  1015. all that

  1016. He pleases.

  1017. Proverbs

  1018. 16.9,

  1019. The heart

  1020. of man

  1021. plans his

  1022. way,

  1023. but the

  1024. Lord

  1025. establishes

  1026. His steps.

  1027. Proverbs

  1028. 21.1,

  1029. says of a

  1030. king,

  1031. and it

  1032. says it of a

  1033. king because

  1034. the king

  1035. was in

  1036. absolute

  1037. control in

  1038. the mind

  1039. of the

  1040. people over

  1041. everything that

  1042. was under

  1043. his reign,

  1044. right?

  1045. But the

  1046. king's

  1047. heart is a

  1048. stream of

  1049. water in

  1050. the hand

  1051. of the

  1052. Lord.

  1053. He turns

  1054. it wherever

  1055. he will.

  1056. Effortlessly

  1057. he turns

  1058. it.

  1059. And certainly

  1060. this gives

  1061. application

  1062. to us.

  1063. God is

  1064. sovereignly in

  1065. control of

  1066. all things.

  1067. Now I

  1068. don't want

  1069. to even

  1070. try to

  1071. work out

  1072. all the

  1073. implications

  1074. of that

  1075. with you.

  1076. I don't

  1077. think we

  1078. will on

  1079. this side

  1080. of glory.

  1081. I think

  1082. it's a

  1083. thing that's

  1084. far too

  1085. high for

  1086. us to

  1087. completely

  1088. understand.

  1089. How it

  1090. is that

  1091. God is

  1092. sovereign over

  1093. all things

  1094. and yet we

  1095. are responsible

  1096. for our

  1097. actions,

  1098. I don't

  1099. want to

  1100. try.

  1101. I don't

  1102. want to

  1103. try.

  1104. Listen to

  1105. this quote

  1106. from Charles

  1107. Spurgeon.

  1108. This is on

  1109. the front of

  1110. your bulletin

  1111. that you

  1112. don't have

  1113. because it's

  1114. sitting in

  1115. the hall.

  1116. So I'll

  1117. try to read

  1118. it carefully

  1119. and you

  1120. can go

  1121. back and

  1122. reread it

  1123. if you

  1124. manage to

  1125. pick one

  1126. of those

  1127. up.

  1128. He once

  1129. said,

  1130. opposition

  1131. to divine

  1132. sovereignty

  1133. is

  1134. essentially

  1135. atheism.

  1136. Men have

  1137. no objection

  1138. to a

  1139. God who

  1140. really is

  1141. no God.

  1142. I mean

  1143. by this

  1144. a God

  1145. who shall

  1146. be the

  1147. subject

  1148. of their

  1149. caprice

  1150. or temper

  1151. tantrums,

  1152. who shall

  1153. be a

  1154. lackey

  1155. to their

  1156. will,

  1157. who shall

  1158. be under

  1159. their

  1160. control.

  1161. They have

  1162. no objection

  1163. to such

  1164. a being

  1165. as that.

  1166. But a

  1167. God who

  1168. speaks

  1169. and it

  1170. is done,

  1171. who

  1172. commands

  1173. and it

  1174. stands

  1175. fast,

  1176. a God

  1177. who has

  1178. no respect

  1179. for their

  1180. persons but

  1181. does as

  1182. he wills

  1183. among the

  1184. armies of

  1185. heaven and

  1186. among the

  1187. inhabitants of

  1188. this lower

  1189. world,

  1190. such a

  1191. God as

  1192. this they

  1193. cannot

  1194. endure.

  1195. Oh, I hope

  1196. we're not

  1197. those people.

  1198. I hope

  1199. we're a

  1200. people who

  1201. rest in the

  1202. sovereignty of

  1203. God over

  1204. all things,

  1205. who believe

  1206. the promises

  1207. of Scripture.

  1208. The same

  1209. way that we

  1210. rest in the

  1211. sure promise

  1212. of gravity,

  1213. we can rest

  1214. in the sure

  1215. promise that

  1216. God is

  1217. sovereignly in

  1218. control of

  1219. everything.

  1220. Young

  1221. people,

  1222. this should

  1223. help you

  1224. as you

  1225. consider what

  1226. comes next

  1227. in the future.

  1228. I know this

  1229. is one of the

  1230. great questions

  1231. on your

  1232. mind.

  1233. What am I

  1234. to do

  1235. next?

  1236. What is

  1237. God's will

  1238. for my

  1239. life?

  1240. God

  1241. accomplished

  1242. it with

  1243. Jonah,

  1244. even when

  1245. Jonah was

  1246. running in

  1247. the opposite

  1248. direction.

  1249. He'll do

  1250. the same

  1251. for you.

  1252. I'm not

  1253. saying don't

  1254. be wise,

  1255. I'm not

  1256. saying don't

  1257. seek counsel,

  1258. walk in the

  1259. way of the

  1260. Lord,

  1261. pray about

  1262. what you

  1263. should do,

  1264. but rest

  1265. in the

  1266. fact that

  1267. God is

  1268. in

  1269. control.

  1270. Thirdly,

  1271. God's

  1272. presence.

  1273. God's

  1274. presence.

  1275. There's

  1276. an interesting

  1277. little phrase

  1278. in this

  1279. first chapter

  1280. expressing

  1281. what it is

  1282. exactly that

  1283. Jonah is

  1284. fleeing from.

  1285. It doesn't

  1286. say the

  1287. command of

  1288. God.

  1289. It says

  1290. that he's

  1291. fleeing from

  1292. the presence

  1293. of the

  1294. Lord.

  1295. It's twice

  1296. in verse

  1297. three,

  1298. it's once

  1299. in verse

  1300. ten.

  1301. He's

  1302. fleeing

  1303. from the

  1304. presence

  1305. of the

  1306. Lord.

  1307. What does

  1308. that mean?

  1309. It's such

  1310. an interesting

  1311. thing.

  1312. I think

  1313. we all

  1314. understand

  1315. that God

  1316. is omnipresent.

  1317. The scripture

  1318. affirms that.

  1319. Psalm

  1320. 139,

  1321. 7-10,

  1322. which Jonah

  1323. should have

  1324. been aware

  1325. of.

  1326. He's a bit

  1327. of a later

  1328. Old Testament

  1329. character.

  1330. The Psalms

  1331. were completed

  1332. at this

  1333. time.

  1334. They would

  1335. have been

  1336. canonized.

  1337. They would

  1338. have existed

  1339. and distributed

  1340. at this

  1341. time.

  1342. I believe

  1343. he would

  1344. have been

  1345. familiar

  1346. with this

  1347. text,

  1348. which says,

  1349. where shall

  1350. I go

  1351. from your

  1352. spirit?

  1353. Or where

  1354. shall I

  1355. flee from

  1356. your

  1357. presence?

  1358. If I

  1359. ascend to

  1360. heaven,

  1361. you are

  1362. there.

  1363. If I

  1364. make my

  1365. bed in

  1366. Sheol,

  1367. you are

  1368. there.

  1369. If I

  1370. take the

  1371. wings of

  1372. the morning

  1373. and dwell

  1374. in the

  1375. uttermost

  1376. parts of

  1377. the sea,

  1378. even there

  1379. your hand

  1380. shall lead

  1381. me,

  1382. and your

  1383. right hand

  1384. shall hold

  1385. me.

  1386. But yet,

  1387. it's recorded

  1388. that he was

  1389. fleeing from

  1390. the presence

  1391. of God.

  1392. It seems

  1393. that Psalm

  1394. 139,

  1395. 7-10 was

  1396. written for

  1397. Jonah.

  1398. Once again,

  1399. we get this

  1400. dwelling in

  1401. the uttermost

  1402. parts of

  1403. the sea.

  1404. Who has

  1405. ever done

  1406. that except

  1407. for Jonah

  1408. for three

  1409. days?

  1410. James

  1411. Montgomery

  1412. Boyce

  1413. suggested he

  1414. liked to

  1415. imagine the

  1416. name of the

  1417. ship that he

  1418. got on,

  1419. which we

  1420. don't know

  1421. was Wings

  1422. of the

  1423. Morning.

  1424. He took

  1425. the wings

  1426. of the

  1427. morning,

  1428. and he

  1429. later dwelled

  1430. in the

  1431. uttermost

  1432. part of

  1433. the sea.

  1434. Maybe this

  1435. is the

  1436. text.

  1437. Maybe this

  1438. is the

  1439. way that

  1440. God spoke

  1441. to him

  1442. as he's

  1443. in the

  1444. belly of

  1445. that great

  1446. fish.

  1447. That even

  1448. in these

  1449. places,

  1450. God's hand

  1451. was leading

  1452. him,

  1453. and his

  1454. right hand

  1455. was holding

  1456. him.

  1457. So what

  1458. does it

  1459. mean that

  1460. he was

  1461. fleeing the

  1462. presence

  1463. of God?

  1464. Jeremiah

  1465. 7-23,

  1466. God speaks

  1467. and says,

  1468. obey my

  1469. voice,

  1470. obey my

  1471. voice,

  1472. and I

  1473. will be

  1474. your

  1475. God,

  1476. and you

  1477. shall

  1478. be my

  1479. people,

  1480. and walk

  1481. in all

  1482. the way

  1483. that I

  1484. command

  1485. you,

  1486. that it

  1487. may be

  1488. well with

  1489. you.

  1490. And I

  1491. think what's

  1492. happening in

  1493. the book of

  1494. Jonah,

  1495. and the

  1496. reason for

  1497. this record,

  1498. is not that

  1499. Jonah could

  1500. actually flee

  1501. from God

  1502. himself.

  1503. God is

  1504. going to be

  1505. present in

  1506. those places.

  1507. But what

  1508. they're trying

  1509. to express

  1510. is that out

  1511. of Jonah's

  1512. disobedience,

  1513. he was

  1514. fleeing from

  1515. communion with

  1516. God,

  1517. with God's

  1518. pleasure with

  1519. him,

  1520. that he was

  1521. severing that

  1522. which was good

  1523. in the garden,

  1524. which was so

  1525. beautiful and

  1526. precious about

  1527. the garden.

  1528. It was

  1529. paradise,

  1530. there was no

  1531. evil,

  1532. there was no

  1533. death,

  1534. all of those

  1535. things.

  1536. But the

  1537. beautiful thing

  1538. about the

  1539. garden is

  1540. that Adam

  1541. and Eve

  1542. had communion

  1543. with God.

  1544. He walked

  1545. with them

  1546. in the

  1547. garden.

  1548. And this

  1549. is something

  1550. that ceased

  1551. at the fall

  1552. as their

  1553. cast out

  1554. of the

  1555. garden,

  1556. they're

  1557. cast out

  1558. of the

  1559. presence

  1560. of God.

  1561. Christ brings

  1562. us back

  1563. to that.

  1564. That's what

  1565. the great

  1566. restoration

  1567. is for us,

  1568. that we get

  1569. to be back

  1570. in relationship

  1571. with God.

  1572. But even

  1573. as those

  1574. who are now

  1575. positionally

  1576. back in

  1577. that place,

  1578. we can still

  1579. sever communion

  1580. with the

  1581. Lord by our

  1582. disobedience.

  1583. We walk

  1584. in evil

  1585. ways.

  1586. We don't

  1587. walk by

  1588. the Spirit.

  1589. He is

  1590. always there,

  1591. but yet we

  1592. shut him

  1593. off.

  1594. And I

  1595. think that's

  1596. what's

  1597. trying to

  1598. be

  1599. communicated

  1600. here.

  1601. The author

  1602. of Jonah

  1603. is trying

  1604. to say

  1605. that Jonah

  1606. by fleeing

  1607. from the

  1608. will of

  1609. God was

  1610. fleeing

  1611. from the

  1612. relationship

  1613. with God.

  1614. It's good

  1615. to be with

  1616. the Lord,

  1617. even if

  1618. He's saving

  1619. our enemies,

  1620. that we

  1621. would walk

  1622. with Him

  1623. because He's

  1624. our greatest

  1625. good.

  1626. Psalm 119.

  1627. 35

  1628. says,

  1629. Lead me in

  1630. the path

  1631. of your

  1632. commandments,

  1633. for I

  1634. delight in

  1635. it.

  1636. It is good

  1637. for the

  1638. people of

  1639. God,

  1640. to be

  1641. with

  1642. God.

  1643. John

  1644. writes in

  1645. 1 John 2,

  1646. 3-6,

  1647. and by

  1648. this we

  1649. know that

  1650. we have

  1651. come to

  1652. know Him.

  1653. We've

  1654. positionally

  1655. changed.

  1656. We know

  1657. that we have

  1658. come to

  1659. know if

  1660. we keep

  1661. His

  1662. commandments.

  1663. We don't

  1664. keep His

  1665. commandments

  1666. so that

  1667. we can

  1668. know,

  1669. but we

  1670. know that

  1671. we know

  1672. because we

  1673. keep His

  1674. commandments.

  1675. Whoever

  1676. says,

  1677. I know

  1678. Him,

  1679. but does

  1680. not keep

  1681. His

  1682. commandments,

  1683. is a

  1684. liar,

  1685. and the

  1686. truth is

  1687. not in

  1688. him.

  1689. But whoever

  1690. keeps His

  1691. word in

  1692. Him,

  1693. truly the

  1694. love of

  1695. God is

  1696. perfected.

  1697. By this

  1698. we may

  1699. know that

  1700. we are

  1701. in Him.

  1702. Whoever

  1703. says he

  1704. abides in

  1705. Him,

  1706. ought to

  1707. walk in

  1708. the same

  1709. way in

  1710. which He

  1711. walked.

  1712. This brings

  1713. us back

  1714. to God's

  1715. purpose.

  1716. God's

  1717. purpose,

  1718. God's

  1719. power,

  1720. and God's

  1721. presence.

  1722. So let me

  1723. ask you a

  1724. couple of

  1725. questions in

  1726. conclusion this

  1727. morning.

  1728. Are you

  1729. a rebel

  1730. this morning?

  1731. Are you a

  1732. rebel

  1733. positionally?

  1734. Have you

  1735. never believed

  1736. in Christ,

  1737. His person,

  1738. His work,

  1739. His perfect

  1740. sacrifice,

  1741. on your

  1742. behalf?

  1743. Do you

  1744. stand as

  1745. the

  1746. Ninevites

  1747. or the

  1748. mariners

  1749. stand,

  1750. never knowing

  1751. God,

  1752. being cut

  1753. off from

  1754. Him?

  1755. The call

  1756. to you is

  1757. to repent

  1758. and to

  1759. believe.

  1760. Destruction

  1761. is your

  1762. end unless

  1763. you repent

  1764. and believe.

  1765. Or are you

  1766. a rebel

  1767. functionally

  1768. this morning?

  1769. Have you

  1770. repented

  1771. and believed?

  1772. Are you

  1773. positionally

  1774. found in

  1775. Christ and

  1776. yet you

  1777. don't walk

  1778. in His

  1779. way?

  1780. And don't

  1781. think that

  1782. you're waiting

  1783. for the

  1784. word of the

  1785. Lord to

  1786. come to

  1787. you.

  1788. That you

  1789. need a

  1790. vision for

  1791. Him to

  1792. speak to

  1793. you for

  1794. what you

  1795. should do.

  1796. You have

  1797. His word

  1798. already.

  1799. He's given

  1800. you command

  1801. to walk

  1802. in.

  1803. Do you

  1804. love the

  1805. purpose of

  1806. God?

  1807. Do you

  1808. believe in

  1809. the power

  1810. of God?

  1811. Do you

  1812. walk in

  1813. the presence

  1814. of God?

  1815. Of course,

  1816. to all of

  1817. these things,

  1818. all of us

  1819. should say

  1820. imperfectly

  1821. no.

  1822. Imperfectly,

  1823. I hope

  1824. yes.

  1825. And in

  1826. this,

  1827. as you ask

  1828. the Lord

  1829. to search

  1830. your heart,

  1831. the call

  1832. to you

  1833. is repent

  1834. and believe.

  1835. Turn from

  1836. your sin

  1837. and turn

  1838. to Christ.

  1839. Don't be

  1840. Jonah.

  1841. And we'll

  1842. look more

  1843. in the coming

  1844. weeks.

  1845. What the

  1846. rest of

  1847. the book

  1848. has to

  1849. say to

  1850. us about

  1851. our God.

  1852. Let's pray

  1853. together.
