  1. Turn to the book of Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today will be verses 12-26.

  3. ! Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  4. It was written for His glory and our good.

  5. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises.

  6. And obey its commands.

  7. I read from verse 12.

  8. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet,

  9. which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.

  10. When they had entered, they went up to the upper room where they were staying,

  11. Peter and John and James and Andrew,

  12. Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew,

  13. James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the zealot and Judas the son of James.

  14. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer together with the women

  15. and Mary, the mother of Jesus and his brothers.

  16. In those days, Peter stood up among the brothers.

  17. The company of persons was in all about 120 and said,

  18. Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled,

  19. which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,

  20. who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  21. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.

  22. Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness,

  23. and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

  24. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  25. so that the field was called in their own language,

  26. Akaldama, that is, field of blood.

  27. For it is written in the book of Psalms,

  28. May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it,

  29. and let another take his office.

  30. So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the times of the Lord Jesus

  31. went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John

  32. until the day when he was taken up from us,

  33. one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.

  34. And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas,

  35. who was also called Justice, and Matthias.

  36. And they prayed and said,

  37. You Lord, who knows the hearts of all,

  38. show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry

  39. and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.

  40. And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias,

  41. and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

  42. Now the text before us today, on first glance,

  43. may seem fairly insignificant.

  44. It seems like a simple historic sidebar of inconsequential facts

  45. leading up to the great day of Pentecost.

  46. Last week we looked at the ascension of Jesus Christ,

  47. and we find ourselves in this ten-day waiting period.

  48. The disciples are now waiting for the Spirit of God to come upon them,

  49. and some amazing things begin to happen in chapter 2.

  50. So, rushing past this, we can just see it as that.

  51. Just some statement of fact.

  52. What was going on in those days?

  53. Well, here's some stuff that they did.

  54. Let's get on to chapter 2.

  55. But upon a more careful reading,

  56. we can note the very early activity of the church of Christ.

  57. And there are a number of things that they were doing that are worth our attention.

  58. And so this morning, I want us to note five things together from verses 12-26.

  59. And the first of those is that they were obedient.

  60. They were obedient.

  61. Now, you may miss this if we don't back up to Acts 1, verses 4-5.

    Acts 1:4–5

  62. If you're just picking up in our study today with us,

  63. what were they obedient to?

  64. Verse 4 says,

  65. So they were told by Christ before He ascended

  66. to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Spirit of God.

  67. Stay and wait.

  68. This was the command that was given to them.

  69. And this is the command that they are being obedient to here in our text.

  70. Verse 12,

  71. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

  72. They were with Jesus on the mount called Olivet.

  73. They returned about a half a mile back to Jerusalem.

  74. And they stop and they stay in the upper room.

  75. It was the place that they were habitating at the time.

  76. We get this list in verse 13 and 14 and into 15

  77. of the people that were there.

  78. They were obedient.

  79. The they I speak of is recorded for us by Luke.

  80. Verse 13,

  81. The remaining eleven apostles.

  82. Those who had traveled with Christ minus Judas.

  83. Eleven apostles left.

  84. We see that the women.

  85. And this is likely referring to Mary Magdalene.

  86. Mary the wife of Clopas.

  87. Mary and Martha.

  88. And Salome among others.

  89. Likely other women that were part of the band of disciples.

  90. Not apostles.

  91. Disciples.

  92. Might have been a troubling thing to have the name Mary in this day.

  93. Of special note amongst the women,

  94. we see that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was amongst them.

  95. And I hope that hearing that blesses your heart.

  96. If I were the Messiah,

  97. I certainly would want my mother to believe the truth concerning me.

  98. And we see this evidence here

  99. that she is still counted amongst those who followed Christ.

  100. And it shouldn't really be a surprise to us

  101. that before Jesus' birth,

  102. Mary fully comprehended and understood who Jesus is.

  103. Her song of praise recorded by Luke in Luke 1.

  104. Verse 46 and 47.

  105. This is the beginning of the Magnificat,

  106. which is Latin for my soul magnifies.

  107. So it's the magnification of Christ by Mary.

  108. Verse 46 says,

  109. And Mary said,

  110. My soul magnifies the Lord,

  111. and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

  112. And here we see here,

  113. they're doing this very thing.

  114. We also see a special note,

  115. Jesus' brothers.

  116. There's a later mention of a total company of persons

  117. numbering 120.

  118. But in the midst of that are Jesus' brothers.

  119. And Luke's not referring to his spiritual brothers,

  120. but rather his biological brothers.

  121. The brothers who had doubted who he was.

  122. You can read about that in Mark 5.

  123. Mark 6.3 gives us their names.

  124. James,

  125. Joseph,

  126. Judas,

  127. and poor Simon didn't get a J name in that mix.

  128. James and Judas,

  129. later known as Jude,

  130. authored part of the New Testament.

  131. So his brothers have come to faith,

  132. and they are now following him.

  133. And so this is the they plus some others,

  134. numbering 120.

  135. They were obedient to stay and to wait

  136. for what God had promised would come.

  137. Many of us need to learn

  138. the incredibly important lesson

  139. of waiting on the Lord.

  140. The Lord's timing is impeccable.

  141. He is never early,

  142. and He is never late.

  143. He is always right on time.

  144. We are often so impatient,

  145. and we will not wait on the Lord.

  146. What would you have done

  147. with ten days?

  148. They've seen Him ascended.

  149. He has given the command,

  150. stay and wait.

  151. And I just have to tell you,

  152. because I'm not a very patient person,

  153. I would have had a really difficult time

  154. doing nothing but wait for ten days.

  155. It would have been very difficult for me

  156. not to go,

  157. look, He gave us commands,

  158. let's go.

  159. He said He's sending the Spirit,

  160. but it hasn't happened yet.

  161. We've got things to do.

  162. The time is short and urgent.

  163. But they stayed,

  164. and they waited.

  165. And they were exactly where God

  166. desired them to be

  167. when He struck a match,

  168. placed it in their midst,

  169. and set a fire of gospel renewal ablaze.

  170. Praise God, the apostles stayed and waited.

  171. And we get to see in chapter 2

  172. what happens when the Spirit of God

  173. is sent upon them.

  174. So they were obedient.

  175. They were also together.

  176. They were obedient,

  177. this is secondly,

  178. they were obedient together

  179. as a group,

  180. as a body.

  181. Beloved, this is the early church.

  182. Of all the thousands that had followed Christ around

  183. and heard His teaching,

  184. this is the faithful few.

  185. And they are gathered together.

  186. Now, no one has ever been saved

  187. by someone else's faith.

  188. By being a member of a Bible-believing congregation,

  189. you aren't necessarily a Christian.

  190. No one has ever been saved

  191. by someone else's faith.

  192. When we stand before God

  193. in the final analysis,

  194. we will rise or fall

  195. on the basis

  196. of our individual faith in Christ

  197. or lack thereof.

  198. In that way,

  199. and only in that way,

  200. is redemption personal.

  201. But,

  202. when we are saved,

  203. we are saved into a body.

  204. We become part of a global faith family.

  205. We are Christ's church.

  206. Is there an essence of which Christ died for you?

  207. Yes.

  208. But Christ ultimately died for His church.

  209. The notion of a Christianity

  210. apart from the life of the church

  211. is completely foreign

  212. to the pages of the New Testament.

  213. And it is so for good reason.

  214. Beloved,

  215. we need one another.

  216. No one has grown to the point

  217. that they no longer need the church.

  218. The church is a grace to us.

  219. It is a tool in the hands of the Almighty

  220. to help bring about our sanctification.

  221. To have us pursue holiness.

  222. We need one another.

  223. I will not grow tired of saying this

  224. because we all need to hear it.

  225. The more I mature in Christ,

  226. the more aware I become

  227. of my need of the church.

  228. Not that I ever didn't need it.

  229. I don't come to realize,

  230. hey, I now need the church.

  231. I've always needed the church.

  232. But the more I grow in Christ,

  233. the more painfully aware I become

  234. of my need of You.

  235. We need one another.

  236. And that need extends beyond mere attendance.

  237. Just coming in right at 10.30 or 5.

  238. Sitting down.

  239. Hearing sermons preached.

  240. Hearing songs sung.

  241. These are good things

  242. and these are valuable things

  243. for the Christian life.

  244. But it is not the expression

  245. of what the church is meant

  246. to be doing together.

  247. Afterward, you say a couple hellos

  248. and out the door you go.

  249. We need to be in life together.

  250. We need to be sharing

  251. what's happening in us

  252. by the grace of God.

  253. We need to be expressing

  254. those places in which we're challenged

  255. that we might be encouraged

  256. and sharpened to live more holy.

  257. We have to be sharing life together.

  258. College students,

  259. many of you have seen the need for this.

  260. You have planted yourself

  261. and you've stayed put.

  262. For those of you who are guests

  263. with us this morning

  264. and haven't heard me say it yet,

  265. you're in a transitionary period

  266. of your time and I get that.

  267. I remember those days.

  268. But you were up here

  269. nine months out of the year.

  270. Get invested in a local congregation.

  271. Don't float from place to place to place

  272. for the next four years

  273. because I guarantee you

  274. your walk with Christ will suffer if you do.

  275. Find a people to invest your life into

  276. for the mission of God.

  277. Be there and be with them

  278. and be sharpened by them.

  279. This reminds me of a story

  280. I once heard John MacArthur tell.

  281. I've heard other people tell it too,

  282. but I've got to give somebody the credit.

  283. So John MacArthur gets it this morning.

  284. He does it like this.

  285. A member of a certain church

  286. who previously had been attending services regularly

  287. stopped going.

  288. After a few weeks,

  289. the pastor decided to visit him.

  290. It was a chilly evening.

  291. The pastor found the man at home alone

  292. sitting before a blazing fire.

  293. Guessing the reason for the pastor's visit,

  294. the man welcomed him,

  295. led him to a big chair near the fireplace,

  296. and waited.

  297. The pastor made himself comfortable

  298. but said nothing.

  299. In the grave silence,

  300. he contemplated the play of the flames

  301. around the burning lungs.

  302. After some minutes,

  303. the pastor took the fire tongs,

  304. carefully picked up a brightly burning ember,

  305. and placed it to one side of the hearth,

  306. all alone.

  307. Then he sat back in his chair,

  308. still silent.

  309. The host watched all this

  310. in quiet fascination.

  311. As the one lone ember's flame diminished,

  312. there was a momentary glow,

  313. and then its fire was no more.

  314. Soon,

  315. it was cold

  316. and dead.

  317. Not a word had been spoken

  318. since the initial greeting.

  319. Just before the pastor was ready to leave,

  320. he picked up the cold,

  321. dead ember

  322. and placed it back

  323. in the middle of the fire.

  324. Immediately,

  325. it began to glow once more

  326. with the light and warmth

  327. of the burning coals around it.

  328. As the pastor reached the door to leave,

  329. his host said,

  330. Thank you so much for your visit,

  331. and especially for the fiery sermon.

  332. I shall be back in church next Sunday.

  333. We need one another.

  334. We need to be preaching the gospel

  335. to one another

  336. that our hearts would stay warm to it.

  337. And note that they were not just together,

  338. but in verse 14,

  339. they were together with one accord.

  340. This is modeled for us,

  341. the type of unity that they had,

  342. even before the Spirit of God

  343. is poured out on the people of God.

  344. They are so concerned

  345. with the mission of God in the world,

  346. the purpose of God in the world,

  347. that they're together,

  348. unified around that,

  349. just that teaching they're unified around.

  350. It's better.

  351. It's higher for us today.

  352. Later, Paul writes to the Ephesians,

    Ephesians 4:1–6

  353. chapter 4, verse 1 through 6,

  354. I therefore,

  355. a prisoner for the Lord,

  356. urge you to walk in a manner

  357. worthy of the calling

  358. to which you have been called,

  359. with all humility and gentleness,

  360. with patience,

  361. bearing with one another in love,

  362. eager to maintain

  363. the unity of the Spirit.

  364. Not create,

  365. but to maintain,

  366. which is a work,

  367. it's a discipline,

  368. but it's a maintenance

  369. of the unity of the Spirit

  370. in the bond of peace,

  371. which already exists in Christ.

  372. There is one body

  373. and one Spirit,

  374. just as you were called to the hope,

  375. one hope that belongs to your call.

  376. One Lord,

  377. one faith,

  378. one baptism,

  379. one God and Father of all

  380. who is over all,

  381. and through all,

  382. and in all.

  383. So this is a discipline for us.

  384. It's not a thing

  385. that just happens naturally.

  386. We are to work

  387. to maintain

  388. the unity

  389. of the Spirit.

  390. It's a discipline.

  391. You've got to pick it up

  392. and you've got to practice it.

  393. And you've got to do this

  394. day in

  395. and day out.

  396. I know

  397. that church

  398. can be so

  399. frustrating.

  400. You know how I know that?

  401. Because I know you guys.

  402. I'm not immune to that.

  403. I'm not unaware

  404. of the challenges

  405. that face you

  406. in your involvement

  407. with the church.

  408. The church

  409. is a magnificent

  410. mess.

  411. It's a mess

  412. because it's made of people.

  413. And it's magnificent

  414. because it is made of people

  415. who have been recipients

  416. of God's grace

  417. and who are growing

  418. in God's grace.

  419. None of us have arrived.

  420. None of us are perfect.

  421. But if we are the church,

  422. we are pictures

  423. of God's redemptive

  424. purpose.

  425. I can look at you

  426. and I can see Christ

  427. because I see Him

  428. at work

  429. amongst you.

  430. The existence

  431. of the church

  432. is a miracle.

  433. And it should be viewed

  434. as such.

  435. The fact that

  436. any of us care

  437. at all

  438. about the things of God

  439. this morning

  440. is a miracle.

  441. We do not love

  442. the things of God

  443. or the work of God

  444. apart from

  445. His intervention.

  446. On the front

  447. of your bulletin

  448. there's a quotation

  449. from Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  450. We must cease

  451. to think of the church

  452. as a gathering

  453. of institutions

  454. and organizations

  455. and we must get back

  456. to the notion

  457. that we are

  458. the people

  459. of God.

  460. If you go to

  461. your favorite restaurant

  462. and you're treated rudely

  463. and the food

  464. isn't cooked well,

  465. go someplace else.

  466. I encourage it.

  467. I love the free market.

  468. It put bad businesses

  469. out of business.

  470. That is not

  471. the church.

  472. We're a people

  473. called together

  474. by God's grace

  475. for His glory

  476. and we are in

  477. process.

  478. We need

  479. to love

  480. one another

  481. in that process.

  482. Don't expect

  483. perfection

  484. from me

  485. or anyone else

  486. in this congregation

  487. because you will

  488. always be sadly

  489. disappointed.

  490. So they were

  491. obedient

  492. and they were

  493. together

  494. and thirdly,

  495. they were

  496. prayerful.

  497. They were together

  498. and they were,

  499. verse 14,

  500. devoting

  501. themselves

  502. to prayer.

  503. The Greek word

  504. for devoting

  505. is a very

  506. strong

  507. word.

  508. Here in ESV,

  509. which I'm preaching

  510. from,

  511. it simply says

  512. devoting.

  513. The New American

  514. Standard Bible

  515. renders this

  516. continually

  517. devoting.

  518. The verb has

  519. a continual

  520. action.

  521. I would add

  522. to it

  523. continually

  524. and fervently

  525. devoting

  526. themselves

  527. to prayer.

  528. This was

  529. the major

  530. part of

  531. their activity

  532. in this

  533. time of

  534. waiting.

  535. What were

  536. they praying

  537. for?

  538. Some have

  539. suggested the

  540. Spirit

  541. and that

  542. that becomes

  543. part of the

  544. equation for

  545. us as

  546. Christians.

  547. A second

  548. baptism and

  549. we must pray

  550. that God

  551. would give

  552. us the

  553. Spirit.

  554. We are

  555. granted the

  556. Spirit of

  557. God when

  558. we place

  559. faith in

  560. Christ.

  561. And they

  562. were not

  563. told to

  564. pray for

  565. the Spirit.

  566. They were

  567. told to

  568. wait for

  569. the Spirit.

  570. So what

  571. were they

  572. praying?

  573. And we

  574. cannot know

  575. for sure.

  576. We see

  577. some evidence

  578. that they

  579. certainly

  580. asked the

  581. Lord who

  582. should replace

  583. Judas.

  584. That's

  585. evidence of

  586. a specific

  587. thing that

  588. they prayed

  589. for.

  590. We don't

  591. know with

  592. confidence,

  593. but I

  594. suggest that

  595. they were

  596. praying the

  597. way that

  598. they were

  599. taught to

  600. pray.

  601. They asked

  602. the Lord,

  603. how should

  604. we pray?

  605. He said

  606. to them in

  607. Matthew 6,

  608. 9-13,

  609. Our Father

  610. in heaven,

  611. hallowed be

  612. your name.

  613. Your kingdom

  614. come,

  615. your will be

  616. done on

  617. earth as

  618. it is in

  619. heaven.

  620. Give us

  621. this day

  622. our daily

  623. bread and

  624. forgive us

  625. our debts

  626. as we

  627. also have

  628. forgiven

  629. our debtors.

  630. And lead

  631. us not

  632. into temptation,

  633. but deliver

  634. us from

  635. evil.

  636. Jesus was

  637. teaching them

  638. how they

  639. should pray.

  640. He wasn't

  641. saying pray

  642. this,

  643. He was

  644. saying pray

  645. like this.

  646. Which doesn't

  647. make praying

  648. the Lord's

  649. prayer wrong

  650. if your

  651. heart is

  652. in it

  653. and you

  654. desire

  655. these things

  656. to come

  657. to bear.

  658. But what

  659. He was

  660. giving for

  661. them was

  662. a pattern

  663. of how

  664. they should

  665. pray.

  666. These are

  667. the things

  668. you should

  669. be concerned

  670. about and

  671. lifting up

  672. to me.

  673. If we

  674. don't view

  675. this this

  676. way,

  677. it's possible

  678. what,

  679. did they

  680. just recant

  681. this thing

  682. over and

  683. over and

  684. over again?

  685. I don't

  686. believe so.

  687. I believe

  688. they were

  689. praying

  690. things in

  691. the will

  692. of the

  693. Father as

  694. outlined by

  695. the Lord's

  696. prayer.

  697. They were

  698. continually

  699. and fervently

  700. devoting

  701. themselves to

  702. pray for

  703. the things

  704. of God.

  705. That His

  706. kingdom come,

  707. that He bring

  708. about holiness

  709. in their lives,

  710. that they be

  711. able to

  712. resist evil.

  713. And rightly

  714. so,

  715. as they were

  716. the people

  717. of God.

  718. They were

  719. a church.

  720. Again,

  721. on the front

  722. of your

  723. bulletin,

  724. another Spurgeon

  725. quotation,

  726. the condition

  727. of the church

  728. may be very

  729. accurately gauged

  730. by its prayer

  731. meetings.

  732. Let this

  733. sink into

  734. you.

  735. The condition

  736. of the church

  737. may be very

  738. accurately gauged

  739. by its prayer

  740. meetings.

  741. So is the

  742. prayer meeting

  743. a grace-o-meter,

  744. and from it

  745. we may judge

  746. of the amount

  747. of divine

  748. working among

  749. a people.

  750. If God

  751. be near a

  752. church,

  753. it must

  754. pray.

  755. And if He

  756. be not there,

  757. one of the

  758. first tokens

  759. of His

  760. absence

  761. will be

  762. a slothfulness

  763. in prayer.

  764. Why do the

  765. people of

  766. God

  767. pray?

  768. The people

  769. of God

  770. pray because

  771. they desire

  772. with their

  773. very being

  774. all that

  775. they are,

  776. all that

  777. they want,

  778. is to see

  779. the purposes

  780. of God

  781. accomplished.

  782. And they

  783. know that

  784. this will

  785. not happen

  786. apart from

  787. the power

  788. of God.

  789. I'll say that

  790. to you again.

  791. The people

  792. of God

  793. pray because

  794. they desire

  795. to see the

  796. purposes of

  797. God

  798. accomplished,

  799. and they

  800. know that

  801. this will

  802. not happen

  803. apart from

  804. the power

  805. of God.

  806. There's a

  807. thing that

  808. we want to

  809. see done,

  810. and we know

  811. it cannot

  812. be done

  813. unless God

  814. does it.

  815. And He gives

  816. to us the

  817. tool of

  818. prayer.

  819. He uses

  820. His people

  821. because He

  822. loves us

  823. to accomplish

  824. His will.

  825. So He moves

  826. us to pray

  827. that He will

  828. act.

  829. And that is

  830. why the

  831. people of

  832. God

  833. pray.

  834. Beloved, we

  835. have opportunities

  836. to gather

  837. and pray

  838. corporately.

  839. Your personal

  840. prayer life is

  841. of vital

  842. importance to

  843. you.

  844. What this

  845. old saint

  846. called closet

  847. prayer, that

  848. quiet time,

  849. you and the

  850. Lord praying

  851. together.

  852. And I

  853. encourage that.

  854. But now,

  855. in this text,

  856. I want to

  857. encourage corporate

  858. prayer.

  859. We pray in

  860. our community

  861. outreach group

  862. meetings.

  863. If you're not

  864. part of one,

  865. you should be.

  866. We have

  867. prayer meetings

  868. every Sunday

  869. morning at

  870. nine o'clock.

  871. That's not

  872. early.

  873. Six a.m.

  874. is early.

  875. Nine a.m.

  876. is not

  877. early.

  878. You can get

  879. up and make

  880. it to this.

  881. Come and

  882. join God's

  883. people in

  884. prayer.

  885. Form prayer

  886. meetings.

  887. Do it

  888. any time.

  889. I don't care

  890. when it

  891. happens.

  892. You just

  893. can't pull

  894. it off on

  895. Sunday

  896. morning?

  897. Find another

  898. time that

  899. you can get

  900. a group of

  901. people together

  902. and pray

  903. that God

  904. would accomplish

  905. His purposes

  906. in our

  907. world.

  908. You recall

  909. that after

  910. Jesus cleared

  911. the temple

  912. of money

  913. changers,

  914. He reminded

  915. the people

  916. in Matthew

  917. 21-13,

  918. My house

  919. shall be

  920. called a

  921. house of

  922. prayer.

  923. And He

  924. was not

  925. referring to

  926. this building

  927. or any

  928. other.

  929. He was

  930. saying,

  931. My people

  932. will be a

  933. people who

  934. pray.

  935. So they

  936. were obedient.

  937. They were

  938. together.

  939. They were

  940. prayerful.

  941. And fourthly,

  942. they were

  943. scripturally

  944. concerned,

  945. or scriptural

  946. if you

  947. prefer.

  948. They were

  949. concerned about

  950. what it was

  951. the Scriptures

  952. had to say.

  953. They had

  954. already turned

  955. their attention

  956. to the Old

  957. Testament

  958. text.

  959. Beginning

  960. in verse

  961. 16,

  962. Peter stands

  963. up and

  964. makes a

  965. speech

  966. amongst

  967. the 120

  968. who are

  969. gathered

  970. there.

  971. Brothers,

  972. the Scripture

  973. had to

  974. be

  975. fulfilled.

  976. There's

  977. an element

  978. of which

  979. it has

  980. already

  981. been

  982. fulfilled.

  983. Judas

  984. has

  985. already

  986. betrayed

  987. Christ.

  988. And there

  989. is an

  990. action

  991. that's

  992. about

  993. to

  994. take

  995. place

  996. where

  997. it

  998. will

  999. continue

  1000. to be

  1001. fulfilled.

  1002. It

  1003. has

  1004. to be

  1005. fulfilled.

  1006. God

  1007. does

  1008. not

  1009. lie.

  1010. Everything

  1011. that the

  1012. Scripture

  1013. says

  1014. will

  1015. come

  1016. to

  1017. pass

  1018. will

  1019. come

  1020. to

  1021. pass.

  1022. And

  1023. they're

  1024. concerned

  1025. about

  1026. this.

  1027. Which

  1028. the

  1029. Holy

  1030. Spirit

  1031. spoke

  1032. before

  1033. him

  1034. by

  1035. the

  1036. mouth

  1037. !

  1038. concerning

  1039. Judas

  1040. who

  1041. became

  1042. a

  1043. guide

  1044. to

  1045. those

  1046. who

  1047. arrested

  1048. Jesus.

  1049. For

  1050. he

  1051. was

  1052. numbered

  1053. among

  1054. us

  1055. and

  1056. was

  1057. allotted

  1058. to

  1059. share

  1060. in

  1061. his

  1062. ministry.

  1063. Now

  1064. this

  1065. man

  1066. acquired

  1067. a field

  1068. with

  1069. reward

  1070. of

  1071. his

  1072. wickedness

  1073. and

  1074. falling

  1075. headlong

  1076. he

  1077. burst

  1078. open

  1079. in the

  1080. middle

  1081. and

  1082. all

  1083. of

  1084. his

  1085. bowels

  1086. gushed

  1087. out.

  1088. And

  1089. it

  1090. became

  1091. known

  1092. to

  1093. all

  1094. the

  1095. inhabitants

  1096. a

  1097. lot

  1098. about

  1099. the

  1100. particular

  1101. nature

  1102. of

  1103. the

  1104. way

  1105. that

  1106. Judas

  1107. died

  1108. but

  1109. he

  1110. died

  1111. horribly.

  1112. I

  1113. also

  1114. want

  1115. to

  1116. say

  1117. that

  1118. this

  1119. account

  1120. Luke's

  1121. account

  1122. in

  1123. Acts

  1124. does

  1125. not

  1126. contradict

  1127. Matthew's

  1128. account

  1129. in

  1130. 27.5

  1131. although

  1132. it

  1133. seems

  1134. to

  1135. on

  1136. the

  1137. surface

  1138. 27.5

  1139. says

  1140. in

  1141. throwing

  1142. down

  1143. the

  1144. pieces

  1145. of

  1146. silver

  1147. into

  1148. the

  1149. temple

  1150. he

  1151. departed

  1152. and

  1153. he

  1154. went

  1155. and

  1156. hanged

  1157. himself.

  1158. So

  1159. these

  1160. two

  1161. separate

  1162. accounts

  1163. we

  1164. need

  1165. to

  1166. reconcile

  1167. is that

  1168. he

  1169. hung

  1170. himself

  1171. poorly

  1172. so

  1173. that

  1174. he

  1175. did

  1176. in

  1177. fact

  1178. hang

  1179. himself

  1180. but

  1181. he

  1182. did

  1183. so

  1184. in

  1185. a

  1186. rather

  1187. shoddy

  1188. manner

  1189. maybe

  1190. the

  1191. knot

  1192. broke

  1193. or

  1194. he

  1195. picked

  1196. a

  1197. bad

  1198. branch

  1199. from

  1200. which

  1201. to

  1202. hang

  1203. himself

  1204. MacArthur

  1205. suggests

  1206. that

  1207. he

  1208. hung

  1209. himself

  1210. on

  1211. the

  1212. edge

  1213. of

  1214. a

  1215. cliff

  1216. so

  1217. that

  1218. when

  1219. whatever

  1220. failed

  1221. in

  1222. the

  1223. system

  1224. failed

  1225. he

  1226. actually

  1227. fell

  1228. off

  1229. the

  1230. side

  1231. of

  1232. a

  1233. cliff

  1234. and

  1235. he

  1236. cites

  1237. a

  1238. relief

  1239. in

  1240. a

  1241. cathedral

  1242. who

  1243. knows

  1244. if

  1245. this

  1246. is

  1247. true

  1248. or

  1249. not

  1250. but

  1251. it

  1252. would

  1253. seem

  1254. that

  1255. quite

  1256. possibly

  1257. if

  1258. we're

  1259. going to

  1260. reconcile

  1261. these

  1262. two

  1263. that

  1264. he

  1265. hung

  1266. himself

  1267. poorly

  1268. and

  1269. therefore

  1270. fell

  1271. when

  1272. he

  1273. was

  1274. hung

  1275. he

  1276. fell

  1277. and

  1278. was

  1279. split

  1280. in

  1281. half

  1282. so

  1283. that

  1284. his

  1285. entrails

  1286. became

  1287. his

  1288. X

  1289. trails

  1290. sometimes

  1291. I don't

  1292. think

  1293. before

  1294. I

  1295. talk

  1296. and

  1297. tradition

  1298. holds

  1299. that

  1300. the

  1301. authorities

  1302. use

  1303. the

  1304. money

  1305. to

  1306. buy

  1307. a

  1308. field

  1309. in

  1310. which

  1311. Judas

  1312. was

  1313. buried

  1314. so

  1315. the

  1316. field

  1317. was

  1318. purchased

  1319. by

  1320. him

  1321. because

  1322. it

  1323. was

  1324. purchased

  1325. by

  1326. the

  1327. money

  1328. that

  1329. he

  1330. was

  1331. given

  1332. for

  1333. the

  1334. betrayal

  1335. so

  1336. he

  1337. tosses

  1338. the

  1339. money

  1340. back

  1341. they

  1342. go

  1343. and

  1344. buy

  1345. him

  1346. a

  1347. field

  1348. and

  1349. he's

  1350. buried

  1351. there

  1352. in

  1353. that

  1354. field

  1355. and

  1356. so

  1357. that's

  1358. how

  1359. we

  1360. reconcile

  1361. these

  1362. two

  1363. So

  1364. !

  1365. Luke's

  1366. !

  1367. account

  1368. doesn't

  1369. contradict

  1370. then

  1371. but rather

  1372. it just

  1373. augments

  1374. Matthew's

  1375. account

  1376. verse 20

  1377. for it is

  1378. written in

  1379. the book

  1380. of Psalms

  1381. may his

  1382. camp

  1383. become

  1384. desolate

  1385. and let

  1386. there be

  1387. no one

  1388. to dwell

  1389. in it

  1390. and let

  1391. another

  1392. take

  1393. his

  1394. office

  1395. So

  1396. Peter

  1397. cites

  1398. from

  1399. Psalm

  1400. three

  1401. different

  1402. times

  1403. Psalm

  1404. 55

  1405. 12

  1406. 15

  1407. predicts

  1408. the

  1409. betrayal

  1410. Psalm

  1411. 69

  1412. 25

  1413. tells

  1414. of his

  1415. removal

  1416. from

  1417. his

  1418. apostolic

  1419. office

  1420. and

  1421. Psalm

  1422. 109

  1423. 8

  1424. promises

  1425. his

  1426. replacement

  1427. and that's

  1428. where they

  1429. find

  1430. themselves

  1431. so they

  1432. knew

  1433. what the

  1434. scripture

  1435. said

  1436. concerning

  1437. Judas

  1438. that his

  1439. betrayal

  1440. removal

  1441. and need

  1442. for

  1443. replacement

  1444. had to

  1445. be

  1446. fulfilled

  1447. so they

  1448. set about

  1449. the work

  1450. of doing

  1451. that

  1452. let me

  1453. ask

  1454. how aware

  1455. are we

  1456. of the

  1457. predictions

  1458. and promises

  1459. of God

  1460. in the

  1461. scripture

  1462. how much

  1463. time do we

  1464. set forth

  1465. to understand

  1466. the promises

  1467. of God

  1468. in the

  1469. scripture

  1470. I ask

  1471. again

  1472. what would

  1473. we

  1474. have

  1475. done

  1476. with

  1477. those

  1478. ten

  1479. days

  1480. I

  1481. hope

  1482. the

  1483. answer

  1484. would be

  1485. that we

  1486. would be

  1487. here

  1488. and we

  1489. would be

  1490. looking

  1491. we'd be

  1492. waiting

  1493. but looking

  1494. to the

  1495. scripture

  1496. what needs

  1497. to be

  1498. done

  1499. how can

  1500. we better

  1501. equip

  1502. ourselves

  1503. in

  1504. the

  1505. waiting

  1506. do

  1507. do we

  1508. do we

  1509. believe

  1510. that the

  1511. Bible

  1512. is a

  1513. sufficient

  1514. guide

  1515. for faith

  1516. and practice

  1517. and beloved

  1518. if we do

  1519. if we truly

  1520. believe that

  1521. that's true

  1522. we will

  1523. treat it

  1524. much

  1525. differently

  1526. than I

  1527. fear we

  1528. so often

  1529. do

  1530. it's a

  1531. precious

  1532. book

  1533. a precious

  1534. book to

  1535. be read

  1536. and believed

  1537. we don't want

  1538. to be an

  1539. illiterate

  1540. people

  1541. you remember

  1542. one of our

  1543. goals for

  1544. this study

  1545. of the

  1546. book of

  1547. Acts

  1548. is to

  1549. better

  1550. love

  1551. and understand

  1552. the

  1553. scripture

  1554. so they

  1555. were

  1556. scripturally

  1557. concerned

  1558. and then

  1559. fifthly

  1560. and lastly

  1561. they were

  1562. submissive

  1563. to

  1564. apostolic

  1565. authority

  1566. they were

  1567. submissive

  1568. to

  1569. apostolic

  1570. authority

  1571. so this

  1572. issue

  1573. is before

  1574. them

  1575. that they

  1576. need to

  1577. replace

  1578. Judas

  1579. the

  1580. scripture

  1581. has said

  1582. that he

  1583. needs

  1584. to be

  1585. replaced

  1586. and let

  1587. me

  1588. remind

  1589. you

  1590. that at

  1591. this

  1592. time

  1593. there

  1594. are

  1595. only

  1596. in this

  1597. text

  1598. there

  1599. are

  1600. eleven

  1601. by the

  1602. end

  1603. of the

  1604. text

  1605. there

  1606. are

  1607. twelve

  1608. who

  1609. are

  1610. considered

  1611. apostles

  1612. the rest

  1613. of the

  1614. people

  1615. there

  1616. are

  1617. not

  1618. at

  1619. this

  1620. point

  1621. in

  1622. time

  1623. they're

  1624. considered

  1625. to be

  1626. disciples

  1627. of

  1628. Jesus

  1629. Christ

  1630. there's

  1631. a

  1632. distinction

  1633. made

  1634. there

  1635. and so

  1636. as Peter

  1637. stands

  1638. up

  1639. and

  1640. states

  1641. this

  1642. case

  1643. they

  1644. are

  1645. submitting

  1646. to

  1647. his

  1648. authority

  1649. !

  1650. in

  1651. addition

  1652. to

  1653. that

  1654. they're

  1655. submitting

  1656. themselves

  1657. to

  1658. this

  1659. laid

  1660. out

  1661. criteria

  1662. for

  1663. apostleship

  1664. here

  1665. in our

  1666. text

  1667. so

  1668. verse

  1669. twenty

  1670. one

  1671. so

  1672. one

  1673. of the

  1674. men

  1675. who

  1676. have

  1677. accompanied

  1678. us

  1679. during

  1680. all

  1681. the

  1682. times

  1683. the

  1684. Lord

  1685. Jesus

  1686. went

  1687. in

  1688. and

  1689. out

  1690. among

  1691. us

  1692. beginning

  1693. from

  1694. the

  1695. baptism

  1696. of

  1697. John

  1698. until

  1699. the

  1700. day

  1701. when

  1702. he

  1703. was

  1704. taken

  1705. up

  1706. from

  1707. us

  1708. one

  1709. of

  1710. these

  1711. men

  1712. must

  1713. become

  1714. with

  1715. us

  1716. a

  1717. witness

  1718. to

  1719. his

  1720. resurrection

  1721. so

  1722. there's

  1723. criteria

  1724. laid

  1725. out

  1726. by

  1727. Peter

  1728. here

  1729. for

  1730. apostleship

  1731. Firstly

  1732. they must

  1733. have been

  1734. part

  1735. of the

  1736. band

  1737. of

  1738. disciples

  1739. from

  1740. the

  1741. beginning

  1742. of

  1743. Jesus'

  1744. ministry

  1745. that's

  1746. what

  1747. he's

  1748. referring

  1749. to

  1750. when

  1751. he

  1752. talks

  1753. about

  1754. the

  1755. baptism

  1756. of

  1757. John

  1758. and

  1759. remained

  1760. with

  1761. Jesus

  1762. to

  1763. the

  1764. end

  1765. of

  1766. his

  1767. ministry

  1768. he

  1769. didn't

  1770. get

  1771. to

  1772. be

  1773. one

  1774. of

  1775. the

  1776. disciples

  1777. that

  1778. are

  1779. recorded

  1780. that

  1781. blanked

  1782. out

  1783. on

  1784. him

  1785. he

  1786. talks

  1787. about

  1788. eating

  1789. !

  1790. Notice

  1791. that

  1792. none

  1793. of

  1794. Jesus'

  1795. brothers

  1796. are

  1797. asked

  1798. to

  1799. be

  1800. apostles

  1801. Secondly

  1802. they must

  1803. have

  1804. been

  1805. an

  1806. eyewitness

  1807. to

  1808. the

  1809. resurrection

  1810. at

  1811. the

  1812. end

  1813. of

  1814. verse

  1815. 22

  1816. one

  1817. of

  1818. these

  1819. men

  1820. must

  1821. become

  1822. with

  1823. us

  1824. a

  1825. witness

  1826. to

  1827. his

  1828. resurrection

  1829. they

  1830. must

  1831. have

  1832. actually

  1833. seen

  1834. him

  1835. physically

  1836. post

  1837. resurrection

  1838. and

  1839. thirdly

  1840. they

  1841. must

  1842. have

  1843. been

  1844. commissioned

  1845. by

  1846. God

  1847. Jesus

  1848. selected

  1849. the

  1850. twelve

  1851. Judas

  1852. departs

  1853. from

  1854. his

  1855. office

  1856. Matthias

  1857. chosen

  1858. through

  1859. the

  1860. casting

  1861. of

  1862. lots

  1863. verse

  1864. 23

  1865. they

  1866. put

  1867. forward

  1868. two

  1869. they

  1870. selected

  1871. two

  1872. men

  1873. who

  1874. fit

  1875. these

  1876. criteria

  1877. there

  1878. may

  1879. have

  1880. been

  1881. more

  1882. there

  1883. but

  1884. the

  1885. apostles

  1886. selected

  1887. two

  1888. they

  1889. thought

  1890. were

  1891. worthy

  1892. of

  1893. the

  1894. office

  1895. Joseph

  1896. called

  1897. Barsabbas

  1898. who

  1899. was

  1900. also

  1901. called

  1902. Justice

  1903. and

  1904. Matthias

  1905. and

  1906. they

  1907. prayed

  1908. and

  1909. said

  1910. you

  1911. Lord

  1912. who

  1913. know

  1914. the

  1915. hearts

  1916. of

  1917. all

  1918. show

  1919. which

  1920. one

  1921. of

  1922. these

  1923. two

  1924. you

  1925. have

  1926. chosen

  1927. to

  1928. take

  1929. the

  1930. place

  1931. in

  1932. this

  1933. ministry

  1934. and

  1935. apostleship

  1936. from

  1937. which

  1938. Judas

  1939. turned

  1940. aside

  1941. to

  1942. go

  1943. to

  1944. his

  1945. own

  1946. place

  1947. and

  1948. they

  1949. cast

  1950. lots

  1951. for

  1952. them

  1953. and

  1954. the

  1955. lot

  1956. fell

  1957. on

  1958. Matthias

  1959. and

  1960. he

  1961. was

  1962. numbered

  1963. with

  1964. the

  1965. eleven

  1966. apostles

  1967. now

  1968. this

  1969. morning

  1970. for

  1971. time

  1972. and

  1973. because

  1974. I'm

  1975. just

  1976. not

  1977. sure

  1978. lots

  1979. and

  1980. it

  1981. made

  1982. me

  1983. uncomfortable

  1984. I

  1985. wasn't

  1986. so

  1987. sure

  1988. about

  1989. it

  1990. but

  1991. historically

  1992. we should

  1993. understand

  1994. why

  1995. they

  1996. did

  1997. it

  1998. here

  1999. and

  2000. R.C.

  2001. Sproul

  2002. wrote

  2003. this

  2004. concerning

  2005. it

  2006. in

  2007. choosing

  2008. lots

  2009. they

  2010. were

  2011. following

  2012. an

  2013. ancient

  2014. tradition

  2015. in

  2016. the

  2017. Old

  2018. Testament

  2019. involving

  2020. the

  2021. use

  2022. of

  2023. the

  2024. urim

  2025. and

  2026. thumim

  2027. which

  2028. were

  2029. symbols

  2030. on

  2031. the

  2032. breastplate

  2033. When

  2034. Old

  2035. Testament

  2036. priests

  2037. were

  2038. unable

  2039. to

  2040. discern

  2041. the

  2042. will

  2043. of

  2044. God

  2045. they

  2046. prayerfully

  2047. cast

  2048. lots

  2049. the

  2050. outcome

  2051. of

  2052. which

  2053. was

  2054. determined

  2055. by

  2056. the

  2057. providence

  2058. of

  2059. God

  2060. so

  2061. the

  2062. apostles

  2063. used

  2064. this

  2065. old

  2066. practice

  2067. which

  2068. they

  2069. still

  2070. believed

  2071. and

  2072. apparently

  2073. it

  2074. was

  2075. otherwise

  2076. I

  2077. believe

  2078. God

  2079. would

  2080. have

  2081. intervened

  2082. in

  2083. the

  2084. process

  2085. an

  2086. appropriate

  2087. practice

  2088. in

  2089. this

  2090. case

  2091. and

  2092. this

  2093. is

  2094. the

  2095. way

  2096. that

  2097. God

  2098. showed

  2099. them

  2100. whether

  2101. they

  2102. should

  2103. select

  2104. between

  2105. these

  2106. two

  2107. men

  2108. Joseph

  2109. called

  2110. Barsabbas

  2111. also

  2112. Justice

  2113. and

  2114. Matthias

  2115. and

  2116. the

  2117. lot

  2118. falls

  2119. let me

  2120. say

  2121. that

  2122. we

  2123. often

  2124. use

  2125. the

  2126. term

  2127. disciple

  2128. and

  2129. capital

  2130. A

  2131. apostle

  2132. the

  2133. office

  2134. of

  2135. apostle

  2136. interchangeably

  2137. in

  2138. referring

  2139. to

  2140. the

  2141. twelve

  2142. we

  2143. preach

  2144. through

  2145. Mark's

  2146. gospel

  2147. and

  2148. I

  2149. believe

  2150. I

  2151. did

  2152. that

  2153. a

  2154. lot

  2155. I'm

  2156. guilty

  2157. of

  2158. doing

  2159. so

  2160. just

  2161. interchanging

  2162. disciple

  2163. apostle

  2164. back

  2165. and

  2166. forth

  2167. but

  2168. this

  2169. can

  2170. be

  2171. a

  2172. mistake

  2173. it's

  2174. possible

  2175. that

  2176. this

  2177. is

  2178. a

  2179. mistake

  2180. disciple

  2181. the

  2182. Greek

  2183. for it

  2184. simply

  2185. means

  2186. a

  2187. student

  2188. or a

  2189. learner

  2190. the

  2191. idea

  2192. of

  2193. apostle

  2194. uppercase

  2195. is

  2196. much

  2197. weightier

  2198. an

  2199. apostle

  2200. uppercase

  2201. Greek

  2202. was an

  2203. ambassador

  2204. commissioned

  2205. by a

  2206. king

  2207. so

  2208. it has

  2209. a

  2210. greater

  2211. deal

  2212. of

  2213. weight

  2214. to it

  2215. so

  2216. all

  2217. of

  2218. the

  2219. capital

  2220. A

  2221. apostles

  2222. were

  2223. disciples

  2224. but

  2225. not

  2226. all

  2235. apostles

  2236. so

  2237. you

  2238. hear

  2239. me

  2240. clearly

  2241. there

  2242. now

  2243. there

  2244. is

  2245. a

  2246. sense

  2247. of

  2248. which

  2249. we

  2250. now

  2251. as

  2252. Christians

  2253. are

  2254. ambassadors

  2255. for

  2256. Christ

  2257. we've

  2258. been

  2259. made

  2260. ministers

  2261. of

  2262. reconciliation

  2263. there

  2264. is an

  2265. apostolic

  2266. sense

  2267. to what

  2268. we do

  2269. but we

  2270. are not

  2271. and never

  2272. will be

  2274. today

  2275. capital

  2276. A

  2277. apostles

  2278. okay

  2279. so

  2280. here's

  2281. these

  2282. criteria

  2283. I've

  2284. laid out

  2285. for you

  2286. the

  2287. three

  2288. find

  2289. them

  2290. here

  2291. in

  2292. this

  2293. text

  2294. what

  2295. about

  2296. Paul

  2297. the

  2298. thirteenth

  2299. we

  2300. refer

  2301. to

  2302. Paul

  2303. as

  2304. an

  2305. apostle

  2306. capital

  2307. A

  2308. as

  2309. he

  2310. does

  2311. so

  2312. himself

  2313. in

  2314. fact

  2315. he

  2316. takes

  2317. great

  2318. labor

  2319. and

  2320. Luke

  2321. takes

  2322. great

  2323. labor

  2324. a number

  2325. of

  2326. times

  2327. in

  2328. Acts

  2329. to

  2330. present

  2331. him

  2332. as

  2333. an

  2334. apostle

  2335. capital

  2336. A

  2337. for

  2338. the

  2339. sake

  2340. of

  2341. his

  2342. apostolic

  2343. authority

  2344. to speak

  2345. on behalf

  2346. of

  2347. God

  2348. amongst

  2349. the

  2350. churches

  2351. of

  2352. the

  2353. Gentiles

  2354. one

  2355. example

  2356. him

  2357. stating

  2358. this

  2359. Galatians

  2360. 1

  2361. 1

  2362. Paul

  2363. an

  2364. apostle

  2365. capital

  2366. A

  2367. not

  2368. from

  2369. men

  2370. nor

  2371. through

  2372. man

  2373. but

  2374. through

  2375. Jesus

  2376. Christ

  2377. and

  2378. God

  2379. the

  2380. Father

  2381. who

  2382. raised

  2383. him

  2384. from

  2385. the

  2386. dead

  2387. Paul

  2388. did

  2389. not

  2390. possess

  2391. the

  2392. first

  2393. two

  2394. criteria

  2395. he

  2396. had

  2397. not

  2398. been

  2399. with

  2400. Jesus

  2401. through

  2402. the

  2403. entirety

  2404. of

  2405. his

  2406. ministry

  2407. in

  2408. fact

  2409. he

  2410. had

  2411. not

  2412. been

  2413. with

  2414. Jesus

  2415. during

  2416. any

  2417. of

  2418. his

  2419. earthly

  2420. ministry

  2421. and

  2422. he

  2423. had

  2424. not

  2425. been

  2426. an

  2427. eyewitness

  2428. to

  2429. the

  2430. resurrection

  2431. he

  2432. had

  2433. not

  2434. seen

  2435. Jesus

  2436. post

  2437. resurrection

  2438. pre

  2439. ascension

  2440. he

  2441. sees a

  2442. vision

  2443. of him

  2444. on the

  2445. road

  2446. to

  2447. Damascus

  2448. but

  2449. he

  2450. didn't

  2451. see

  2452. him

  2453. in

  2454. the

  2455. flesh

  2456. post

  2457. resurrection

  2458. pre

  2459. ascension

  2460. however

  2461. he

  2462. did

  2463. possess

  2464. the

  2465. third

  2466. he

  2467. was

  2468. commissioned

  2469. by

  2470. God

  2471. by

  2472. Christ

  2473. himself

  2474. on

  2475. the

  2476. Damascus

  2477. road

  2478. and

  2479. told

  2480. to

  2481. go

  2482. take

  2483. the

  2484. gospel

  2485. to

  2486. the

  2487. Gentiles

  2488. so

  2489. those are

  2490. the criteria

  2491. for

  2492. Paul

  2493. right

  2494. why

  2495. can

  2496. no

  2497. one

  2498. today

  2499. if

  2500. those

  2501. are

  2502. the

  2503. criteria

  2504. he

  2505. meets

  2506. one

  2507. of

  2508. the

  2509. three

  2510. why

  2511. can

  2512. no

  2513. one

  2514. today

  2515. claim

  2516. to

  2517. be

  2518. an

  2519. apostle

  2520. why

  2521. can

  2522. I

  2523. not

  2524. come

  2525. to

  2526. you

  2527. and

  2528. say

  2529. I

  2530. had

  2531. a

  2532. vision

  2533. on

  2534. my

  2535. drive

  2536. from

  2537. here

  2538. to

  2539. my

  2540. house

  2541. Jesus

  2542. Christ

  2543. told

  2544. me

  2545. that

  2546. I

  2547. am

  2548. an

  2549. apostle

  2550. and

  2551. I

  2552. now

  2553. speak

  2554. !

  2555. on

  2556. behalf

  2557. of

  2558. God

  2559. and

  2560. be

  2561. very

  2562. very

  2563. very

  2564. wary

  2565. beloved

  2566. of

  2567. anyone

  2568. who

  2569. does

  2570. this

  2571. the

  2572. reason

  2573. is

  2574. because

  2575. Paul

  2576. was

  2577. confirmed

  2578. by

  2579. other

  2580. apostles

  2581. Galatians

    Galatians 2:1–10

  2582. chapter 2

  2583. verses 1

  2584. through 10

2585. I'm not going to go to the text or read the text but I want you to get these notes down and look at the text together

  2586. !

2587. Again here for the sake of time

2588. but I want you to note the following verse 2

2589. Paul did this to be sure that is received the confirmation that he was truly teaching and preaching the truth.

2590. So God tells him go to Jerusalem make sure get this confirmation from the elders.

2591. In verse 6 the elders in Jerusalem did not add anything or take anything away from the message that Paul taught or preached.

  2592. Verse 7

2593. the elders recognized that God had entrusted to Paul the preaching and teaching of the gospel to the Gentiles.

2594. And then in verse 9 James, John, and Peter confirmed God's call upon the life of Paul.

2595. So this is how Paul, a single person in history, gets around those first two requirements because he was confirmed his teaching and everything he was doing,

2596. his ministry to the Gentiles was confirmed by living, capital A apostles.

2597. He was confirmed by those with higher credentials

2598. and no men of that caliber are alive today.

2599. No capital A apostles live anymore.

  2600. Therefore,

2601. we can't be confirmed by them.

  2602. That's an impossibility now.

2603. And so capital A apostles

  2604. no longer exist.

  2605. So,

  2606. they were submissive

  2607. to apostolic authority

  2608. in the selection

  2609. of Matthias.

  2610. And further,

  2611. in Acts 2.42

2612. we see the church devoted to the teaching

  2613. of the apostles

  2614. as messengers,

2615. those who spoke with authority

  2616. on behalf

  2617. of Christ.

  2618. And today,

2619. because we don't have those men walking amongst us today,

2620. we have the canonized Scripture

  2621. before us.

  2622. This book,

  2623. God's 66 books

  2624. written for us,

2625. for His glory and our good,

2626. we should listen to it

2627. in order to believe His promises

  2628. and obey its commands.

  2629. We should devote ourselves

2630. to the study of it.

  2631. This is the right

  2632. and proper activity

  2633. of the church.

  2634. In the first chapter

2635. of the book of Acts,

  2636. before things

  2637. just blow up

  2638. in chapter 2

2639. in the most glorious way,

2640. we already gain a glimpse

  2641. of the work

  2642. of the early church

  2643. which sets forth

  2644. patterns

  2645. for us to observe

  2646. and to follow.

  2647. They were obedient.

  2648. They were together.

  2649. They were prayerful.

  2650. They were scripturally concerned

  2651. and they were submissive

  2652. to apostolic authority.

  2653. Let's pray together.
