  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  2. But as a church, if we don't, each time we gather together, celebrate and learn more about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we're failing at the task put before us as God's people gather together.

  3. It's also good for a church to keep a schedule.

  4. And here, Christ's Only Church, we love verse by verse exposition.

  5. We want to get in deep into the scripture.

  6. We want to understand all that it has to say to us as God's inspired word.

  7. From time to time, I prove myself more clever than you might think.

  8. And both gets to happen on the same day.

  9. So we've been working through the book of Acts.

  10. And we have in Acts chapter 3 verses 1 through 19, the second sermon that Peter preaches.

    Acts 3:1–19

  11. And he talks about the resurrection.

  12. There was great labor on the part of the disciples, which we'll talk more about soon, to prove that the resurrection was a reality.

  13. That this message that they were preaching, that this person that they claimed to follow was indeed alive.

  14. So this morning we have before us a short story, an event that happens, and then a sermon preached by Peter, which we will look at the first part of that sermon together.

  15. So I'm going to read to us Acts 3 verses 1 through 19.

    Acts 3:1–19

  16. Before I do, let me remind you, this is God's word written to us for his glory and our good.

  17. We would all do well to listen to it, set aside the distraction and the fray of the morning in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  18. Acts chapter 3, beginning in verse 1.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  19. Now, Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

  20. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the beautiful gate, to ask alms of those entering the temple.

  21. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.

  22. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, look at us.

  23. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

  24. But Peter said, I have no silver and gold, but what I do have, I give to you.

  25. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.

  26. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up.

  27. And immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.

  28. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

  29. And all the people saw him walking and praising God and recognized him as the one who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple asking for alms.

  30. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what happened to him.

  31. While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's.

  32. And when Peter saw it, he addressed the people, men of Israel, why do you wonder at this?

  33. Or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?

  34. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers glorified his servant Jesus,

  35. whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him.

  36. But you denied the holy and righteous one and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.

  37. And you killed the author of life whom God raised from the dead.

  38. To this we are witnesses.

  39. And his name, by faith in his name, has made this man strong whom you see and know.

  40. And the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

  41. And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance as did also your rulers.

  42. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.

  43. Repent, therefore, and turn back that your sins may be blotted out.

  44. Repent, therefore, and turn back that your sins may be blotted out.

  45. Now, church, we have before us quite a bit of text this morning.

  46. And whether we have much to cover or little, it's always helpful to have some outline to hang the text on top of.

  47. Right?

  48. To help us get our minds into it and to rightly understand it.

  49. There are many different ways you could outline a text, especially as robust as this one.

  50. But I've decided to do it this morning in three points.

  51. I'm going to give them to you in advance.

  52. If you're taking notes, give you some framework in which to think.

  53. So we're going to look at these 19 verses in this way.

  54. First, the confirmation of Peter's preaching.

  55. First, the confirmation of Peter's preaching.

  56. Second, the content of Peter's preaching.

  57. What was the message that was being preached?

  58. The content of Peter's preaching.

  59. And third, the call of Peter's preaching.

  60. So first, the confirmation of Peter's preaching.

  61. We see in Acts 3, 1 through 11, a miracle performed.

  62. Peter performs a miracle by the power of God in order to give confirmation to his message.

  63. This is why miracles have always been performed.

  64. This was the ministry of Jesus walking around healing.

  65. We read a story to the children just a moment ago about Jesus, the miracle man.

  66. The point of the miracles was to say to the people who were witnessing these things,

  67. listen to what I have to say to you.

  68. Surely, he came and he brought healing.

  69. He brought restoration.

  70. And those things are wonderful in this life.

  71. What Jesus ultimately came to do was to preach the gospel of the coming of the kingdom.

  72. That we might have eternal restoration.

  73. Temporal versus the eternal.

  74. The greater miracle.

  75. That by faith in Christ, we are brought to restored relationship with God.

  76. That our hearts are changed.

  77. That we no longer live for ourselves, but that we now live for Him.

  78. This is the purpose of miracles.

  79. And it happens here with Peter.

  80. In verses 1 through 11, we see Peter and John, his old friend.

  81. They owned a fishing business before they were called to be apostles.

  82. Going to the temple at the hour of prayer.

  83. These two were particularly close to Christ.

  84. Peter and John, along with John's brother James, were kind of part of the inner circle

  85. that Jesus spent some of the most intimate moments of His ministry with.

  86. Here we see them still together.

  87. These are the only two that followed Jesus to the high priest's house after His arrest.

  88. Their response to the arrest and crucifixion of Christ were dramatically different.

  89. They part ways.

  90. We can observe in Luke's narrative, his first narrative, John at the foot of the cross,

  91. being asked by Jesus to care for His mother.

  92. And we can read of Peter's three-fold denial of Jesus.

  93. Here we see them now reunited as the first disciples to visit the empty tomb after the resurrection.

  94. Imagine the amount of hopelessness they must have experienced at the crucifixion of Christ.

  95. Whether at the foot of that cross or off denying Jesus.

  96. This hopelessness.

  97. But they're the first two at the report of the women to run to see the empty tomb.

  98. And now we see them with such great boldness, giving leadership to the church.

  99. We see these two traveling and ministering together through much of the beginning of Acts.

  100. And here we see them going together to pray.

  101. And they're going up to the temple.

  102. Everything in Jerusalem goes up to the temple on the temple mount.

  103. It's always higher than everything else.

  104. So if you're going to the temple, you're always going up to the temple.

  105. The temple would be used for quite some time in the early church for the gathering of Christians.

  106. It was still a place of the worship of God.

  107. Now they're rightly understanding what that worship is to look like.

  108. That it's to happen through Jesus Christ.

  109. But they're still gathering at this place in order to do that.

  110. And they're able to do this until persecution arises.

  111. And the Jews begin to prohibit them from meeting at the temple.

  112. The temple was the obvious place to attend, to reason with Jews concerning Jesus.

  113. Those who had covenant promise of God to fully comprehend and to understand who the Messiah was.

  114. This was the obvious place to go.

  115. People who had come to worship God being told by the apostles how to worship God rightly.

  116. We see this incredibly often in the ministry of Paul when he goes to a new city.

  117. He starts at the temple in that city.

  118. A place where people were coming together in order to worship God.

  119. And they're doing so at the hour of prayer.

  120. So the ninth hour, the clarification is here by Luke.

  121. It's 3 p.m.

  122. The Jews counted the hours from sunrise.

  123. So 6 a.m. would have been the first hour.

  124. Noon would have been the sixth hour.

  125. The ninth hour is 3 p.m. in the afternoon.

  126. And this is significant for the narrative because this was also the time that the evening sacrifice began.

  127. The temple crowds would have been at their very height at this time.

  128. So they're going to pray without a plan.

  129. They're just going to pray.

  130. They're walking in and they encounter a man.

  131. This is the setting that Peter and John walk into.

  132. 2 p.m.

  133. Seeing this opportunity to display the loving kindness of God as they see this man.

  134. Verse 2.

  135. A man who is lame from birth.

  136. Luke records this for us to indicate that his case was hopeless.

  137. His inability to walk was not an issue that could be remedied by a doctor or with time.

  138. It wasn't that he had hurt himself and he needed some healing.

  139. He was lame from birth.

  140. It also indicates that he'd been lame for a very long time and that he had known nothing else.

  141. This man had never stood on his own legs.

  142. He had never walked.

  143. He's hopeless.

  144. He has to be carried, the text tells us.

  145. Carried and laid daily in this place.

  146. The imperfect tense of the verb translated was being carried along with the phrase they laid daily at the gate of the temple.

  147. That is called the beautiful gate.

  148. The beautiful gate is recorded by Luke to show us that this man was a permanent fixture at this location.

  149. For his livelihood, he was brought every single day to this place and sat there in order to collect alms or donations to the poor.

  150. Everyone, everyone who frequented this place would have been familiar with this man.

  151. It was a strategic location where he was at, right?

  152. To make this livelihood, begging for money as people came to express their piety at the temple.

  153. This was what they were coming to do, to make sacrifice for God.

  154. In Jewish tradition, it was a wonderful thing to give publicly.

  155. So I'm sure the man did well in this place, receiving alms from those who would pass by.

  156. And in expectance of that, you see in verse 3 and 4 and 5, he looks to these men, Peter and John, to give him alms.

  157. And as Peter says to him, look at us.

  158. They fix their gaze on him.

  159. Peter and John looking at him.

  160. Him looking back at them.

  161. What he expects is something from them.

  162. He received something to be sure, but not the alms that he was expecting.

  163. I think most of us have had some experience with the poor.

  164. Have taken a trip to Atlanta where somebody might be hanging out to Panhandle.

  165. And consider the way in which you encounter those people walking down the sidewalk.

  166. Somebody sitting on the side of the road that you're pretty confident is going to ask for money from you.

  167. Or when you pull up on the off-ramp at the light and there's the guy with the sign and he's walking.

  168. And you go, oh gosh, oh gosh, just don't look.

  169. If you don't look, he won't walk right up to the door because I never carry cash.

  170. And I don't think he's swiping credit cards.

  171. This feels awkward.

  172. I can't look at him in the face.

  173. Recognize that what's happening here is people are doing this as they're walking in.

  174. Even as some are giving to them, they're giving what they give and they walk on.

  175. But Peter and John have compassion for him as a person and they look at him.

  176. It's significant that Luke records this for us.

  177. They see him as more than that outward appearance.

  178. This man broken and lame, begging for money.

  179. They see him as an eternal soul.

  180. And they seek to grant him that which will be best for his soul.

  181. Make eye contact with him.

  182. And Peter says to him, verse 6,

  183. I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you.

  184. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.

  185. Takes him by the right hand.

  186. Raises him up.

  187. Immediately.

  188. Immediately.

  189. The way God works.

  190. Miracles.

  191. Immediately.

  192. His feet and ankles were made strong.

  193. We see he leaps up.

  194. Peter supplied by God's power.

  195. Ultimately what the man really needed.

  196. Now, get this.

  197. You've got to read between the lines, right?

  198. He stood up and he walked.

  199. It was a good thing.

  200. It was a valuable thing.

  201. It was a temporary restoration.

  202. But what he ultimately needed was to have his affections turned toward God.

  203. Not sitting outside the temple expecting to receive money, but rather going in for the worship of God.

  204. And we see this begin to happen.

  205. Verses 8 through 11.

  206. Leaping up, he stood and began to walk.

  207. He entered the temple with him, walking and leaping and praising God.

  208. All the people saw him walking and praising God and recognized him as the one.

  209. Right?

  210. The one who sat, this permanent fixture, who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple.

  211. They'd seen him so many times.

  212. They knew this was the man that sat there at the beautiful gate asking for alms.

  213. Here he is now.

  214. All our lives, sitting in this spot.

  215. Here he is now, walking and leaping and praising God for what has happened.

  216. And they're filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

  217. I think we'd feel the same.

  218. God sets out this introduction to Peter's sermon and their attention is caught.

  219. But, as carefully as I try to craft some form of introduction for a sermon,

  220. I'm never going to get your attention the way this grabbed these people's attention.

  221. None of you jumping around, leaping and praising God,

  222. would capture the attention the way this man, who's been here for so long and is now restored, did.

  223. And he's clinging to Peter and John, which isn't to say that he couldn't walk,

  224. but he's desperate holding on to them.

  225. These men who have spoken into his life and he's become restored.

  226. He's treasuring them.

  227. He wants to be around them.

  228. He doesn't want to lose them in the crowd as these people astounded run together in the portico called Solomon's.

  229. Now, this was the porch that surrounded the court of the Gentiles.

  230. It was a large, expansive place.

  231. This was the same place that Jesus gave the good shepherd discord.

  232. So, to set that scene for you.

  233. This is the very place where Jesus stood and spoke of himself as the good shepherd.

  234. This miracle is setting up this great stage for Peter's message.

  235. Peter and John, going to the temple to pray, have now interceded by God's power and healed a man.

  236. And now Peter's about to preach his second sermon.

  237. Prepared.

  238. Knowing the word of God.

  239. Filled with the spirit of God.

  240. His stage is set for him.

  241. And he speaks.

  242. This miracle gives confirmation to this message that's about to be spoken.

  243. These people are astounded by it.

  244. They're drawn together.

  245. Their attention is fixed.

  246. As if God cries out to them in the miracle.

  247. Listen to the message to be preached in your hearing.

  248. So, there's a confirmation of Peter's preaching.

  249. Second, and the major part of our text, our time today, is the content of Peter's preaching.

  250. Verses 12 through 18 of chapter 3.

  251. The content of Peter's preaching.

  252. Now, before he really gets into the mix of it,

  253. verse 12 says that when Peter saw it,

  254. this clamoring crowd,

  255. their astonishment at what had happened,

  256. when he saw this,

  257. he addressed the people.

  258. He responded to the people.

  259. Some of your translations may say.

  260. It's a very common way in which a speech began in Greek.

  261. This introductory statement.

  262. He addressed the people.

  263. Men of Israel,

  264. why do you wonder at this?

  265. Or why do you stare at us?

  266. As though by our own power or piety,

  267. we have made him walk.

  268. Peter clears the air with two questions.

  269. He begins by saying,

  270. men of Israel,

  271. which is a term of respect.

  272. He's saying to them,

  273. listen to me,

  274. men of Israel,

  275. devout Jewish followers.

  276. It's a beginning of a harsh exhortation on their part,

  277. a rebuke even.

  278. He padded them up and he built some equity.

  279. Men of Israel.

  280. But it also serves to remind them

  281. that they were God's covenant people.

  282. They were Jews.

  283. These are Jewish people gathering at the temple in Jerusalem.

  284. They had the scripture.

  285. They were taught it from a very early age.

  286. And they should have had the answer

  287. to these questions that Peter asks.

  288. Two of them.

  289. First,

  290. why do you wonder at this?

  291. Why do you wonder at this?

  292. They knew God to be a miracle working God.

  293. Their history was wrought with stories

  294. of God's miracle working amongst them as a people.

  295. Many of the Psalms that they would have recited and sung

  296. go through the process of remembering

  297. the way in which God's people were delivered from Egypt

  298. and the miracles that happened to make this happen.

  299. They knew that God was a miracle working God.

  300. They had all kinds of knowledge of God's miraculous power.

  301. Father,

  302. they would have been familiar with passages like

  303. Isaiah 35,

  304. 5 and 6,

  305. which speaks of healings marking the beginning

  306. of the messianic age.

  307. Verse 5,

  308. Isaiah 35,

  309. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened

  310. and the ears of the deaf unstopped.

  311. Then shall the lame man leap like a deer

  312. and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.

  313. How familiar there.

  314. If they were paying attention to their scriptures,

  315. they would have seen the miracle working of Jesus

  316. and now the following miracle working of the apostles

  317. by the power of God

  318. as this inauguration of the messianic age.

  319. Paying attention.

  320. Why do you wonder at this?

  321. Of course this is happening.

  322. This is what Peter is expressing.

  323. And he also says,

  324. Why do you stare at us

  325. as though by our own power or piety

  326. we have made him walk?

  327. It wasn't us to do this thing.

  328. Don't praise us.

  329. We're merely under shepherds of the great shepherd.

  330. Remember where they're standing

  331. when Peter's saying this.

  332. They couldn't have had the power

  333. or the piety to do this

  334. apart from the work of God through them.

  335. And this miracle creates

  336. a conundrum for the Jews.

  337. They believed that God works miracles.

  338. They knew this of their history.

  339. They saw it in their holy text.

  340. They had put Jesus Christ to death

  341. because he claimed to be God.

  342. And here are his followers

  343. performing miracles

  344. in the name of Jesus Christ.

  345. It puts them in a very tough spot.

  346. And he's setting this up.

  347. He's clearing the air

  348. to say to them,

  349. of course this is happening

  350. because Jesus is God.

  351. And he's going to say in a moment,

  352. and you killed him.

  353. And you killed him.

  354. After asking these two clarifying questions,

  355. Peter begins to preach.

  356. And what is the primary context

  357. of a sermon?

  358. The primary context,

  359. if it has a theme to it,

  360. it's the exaltation of Jesus Christ.

  361. The exaltation of Jesus Christ.

  362. It's showing who Jesus is.

  363. It's teaching about his person

  364. and his work.

  365. Presenting the right answer

  366. in his preaching

  367. to the most important question

  368. anyone will ever answer

  369. in their life.

  370. Who is Jesus?

  371. Who is Jesus?

  372. And I don't know so many of you

  373. this morning

  374. as I'm looking around.

  375. We have a lot of guests

  376. and I'm thankful for that.

  377. Who is Jesus?

  378. He said some astounding things.

  379. Claimed to do

  380. some incredible things.

  381. We didn't walk with him,

  382. but we have an account of it.

  383. And it puts you in a spot

  384. to consider

  385. he can't just be a good teacher.

  386. If he's just a good teacher,

  387. he said nutty,

  388. nutty things.

  389. He called himself

  390. God.

  391. He forgave sin.

  392. He told people

  393. they had to eat his flesh

  394. and drink his blood.

  395. So he either was

  396. just a liar

  397. or he was a lunatic,

  398. absolutely insane man

  399. or he is in fact

  400. who he says he is

  401. and he's Lord

  402. of heaven and earth.

  403. You need to answer

  404. that question.

  405. It's the most important question.

  406. And Peter's presenting

  407. to them

  408. the right answer.

  409. The proper aim

  410. of all preaching.

  411. And don't hear preaching

  412. as I'm saying that this morning

  413. is what I'm doing right now,

  414. although it does fall

  415. under that category.

  416. I would call this

  417. a subset of preaching.

  418. Speaking the good news

  419. of Jesus Christ

  420. to anyone who will hear.

  421. So whether it's from a pulpit

  422. or over a cup of coffee,

  423. we're all meant to preach

  424. the good news of Jesus Christ.

  425. If you are a disciple of Christ,

  426. you must preach

  427. the good news

  428. of Jesus Christ.

  429. A Christian life

  430. devoid of preaching

  431. the good news

  432. is no Christian life at all.

  433. We are ambassadors

  434. for Christ.

  435. We are sent out

  436. as His chosen ones

  437. to spread the aroma

  438. of Him everywhere.

  439. prayer.

  440. This is the task

  441. put before us.

  442. So it's important

  443. that we see the way

  444. in which we ought to preach.

  445. That affects the way

  446. I preach now

  447. and what I'm doing.

  448. It also affects

  449. the way we function

  450. and talk to

  451. our neighbors

  452. and our co-workers

  453. and beyond.

  454. An example of this,

  455. Acts 8.4.

  456. The persecution

  457. comes on the church

  458. and there's these

  459. very harmonious days.

  460. The church is being gathered

  461. and gathered

  462. and gathered

  463. in Jerusalem

  464. and the persecution

  465. comes and they're scattered.

  466. Acts 8.4 says,

  467. Now those who are scattered

  468. went about

  469. preaching the word.

  470. It's an interesting

  471. Greek word used here

  472. for preaching.

  473. It's not in the

  474. negative connotation of it

  475. but can mean

  476. that they gossiped it

  477. everywhere.

  478. It means they spoke it

  479. any time they had a chance.

  480. Someone was willing to listen

  481. and they told it to them.

  482. Everywhere they could go

  483. on the byways

  484. on the way home

  485. when they got home

  486. when they re-engaged

  487. in their jobs

  488. in their hometown.

  489. The job of the church

  490. is to make Jesus known

  491. by the power

  492. of the Holy Spirit

  493. to the glory

  494. of God the Father.

  495. That is our job.

  496. The job of the church

  497. is to make Jesus known

  498. by the power

  499. of the Holy Spirit

  500. to the glory

  501. of God the Father.

  502. We are to preach

  503. the good news

  504. of Jesus Christ.

  505. This is why

  506. Christ's family church exists

  507. to glorify God

  508. by experiencing,

  509. proclaiming,

  510. and displaying

  511. the supremacy

  512. of Jesus Christ

  513. in all things

  514. to all peoples.

  515. It is not the job

  516. of the church

  517. to create separate environments

  518. for people to make friends.

  519. It's not the job.

  520. As a local popular pastor

  521. recently suggested,

  522. it's not the job.

  523. The job of the church

  524. is to exalt Jesus Christ.

  525. That's what you need

  526. this morning.

  527. You need that more

  528. than you need friends.

  529. You need friends,

  530. but you need Christ

  531. exalted in your life

  532. more than that.

  533. John 3, 14 and 15,

  534. Jesus says,

  535. And as Moses

  536. lifted up the serpent

  537. in the wilderness,

  538. so must the Son of Man

  539. be lifted up,

  540. that whoever believes

  541. in Him

  542. may have eternal life.

  543. Whether you are found

  544. in Christ this morning

  545. or not,

  546. you need Christ

  547. exalted before you.

  548. That we might look at Him,

  549. place believing faith

  550. in Him for the first time,

  551. or continue to place

  552. believing faith in Him.

  553. I need a fresh vision

  554. of Jesus Christ

  555. moment by moment

  556. by moment in my day.

  557. I need the gospel

  558. to run through my veins.

  559. No doctrine stays alive

  560. in the mind.

  561. It must be fed.

  562. Christian,

  563. if you're not in your scripture,

  564. you're not in Christian fellowship,

  565. you're not having Christ

  566. held up before you

  567. as often as possible,

  568. your heart will grow cold.

  569. You might find yourself

  570. in that place this morning.

  571. You might find yourself

  572. a fickle believer,

  573. nominal at best.

  574. Behold,

  575. Christ.

  576. That's what Peter's doing

  577. for us this morning.

  578. I hope in some

  579. explanation of the text,

  580. I hope that for you.

  581. If you're not found in Christ,

  582. if you haven't placed

  583. believing faith in Him,

  584. you may have had some

  585. walk the aisle,

  586. prayer prayer experience.

  587. That's possible to do that

  588. and not have placed

  589. believing faith

  590. in Jesus Christ.

  591. You believe in Jesus Christ

  592. and He will change you

  593. He will reorient your life.

  594. You won't look the way

  595. you used to look.

  596. You'll begin to look different

  597. by one degree

  598. and another.

  599. You'll begin to love things

  600. that you used to hate.

  601. You'll begin to hate things

  602. that you used to love.

  603. There's a measure to that,

  604. an evidencing of fruit.

  605. Examine your life.

  606. See where your heart is.

  607. Repent

  608. and believe.

  609. So Peter begins to exalt

  610. Jesus Christ

  611. and he does so by using

  612. five different names for him.

  613. Five different names

  614. is the way I'm

  615. structuring point two.

  616. Five different names

  617. for him.

  618. I want to point out to you

  619. that his first sermon

  620. as recorded in chapter two

  621. on the day of Pentecost

  622. is a citation and explanation

  623. of three different

  624. Old Testament texts.

  625. It's very scripture rich.

  626. This first one.

  627. We don't see him citing

  628. specific scripture

  629. in this case

  630. but I just want you to know

  631. to a Jewish audience

  632. these titles that he's pulling out

  633. to describe Jesus Christ

  634. would have accessed

  635. for their minds

  636. a multitude of scriptures

  637. that would have said these things.

  638. I want to show you some of them.

  639. Remember he's speaking

  640. to a particular audience

  641. that would have heard

  642. these titles

  643. and they would have been

  644. very significant

  645. to them.

  646. So he was bringing forth

  647. the scripture

  648. to give explanation

  649. to exalt Jesus Christ.

  650. Okay.

  651. So number one.

  652. He calls him God's servant.

  653. God's servant.

  654. Verse 13.

  655. He begins

  656. the God of Abraham

  657. the God of Isaac

  658. and the God of Jacob

  659. the God of our fathers.

  660. He's saying

  661. don't be confused

  662. about the God

  663. I'm speaking about.

  664. Jewish audience.

  665. Do not be confused.

  666. This is God the Father.

  667. This is the God

  668. of Abraham

  669. of Isaac

  670. of Jacob

  671. of Moses

  672. glorified

  673. his servant.

  674. He calls Jesus

  675. God's servant.

  676. Now you may not be familiar

  677. with this

  678. but they were

  679. that this is a commonly used

  680. Old Testament designation

  681. for the Messiah.

  682. This promised one

  683. the anointed one

  684. that would come

  685. to God's people.

  686. It's most famously

  687. tied to

  688. predictions

  689. of Christ's

  690. suffering.

  691. Now I want you to

  692. turn to one of those

  693. with me

  694. as we consider

  695. the suffering

  696. and death

  697. of Jesus Christ

  698. in Isaiah chapter 52.

    Isaiah 52 chapter mention

  699. 2.

  700. I'm going to

  701. the end of the chapter

  702. to verse 13

  703. and then I'm going

  704. to read Isaiah 53

  705. along with that.

  706. If you don't know

  707. this

  708. chapter verses

  709. are not inspired.

  710. It's good for us

  711. to sometimes

  712. look beyond.

  713. So we're going to

  714. begin in 52.13

  715. and read through 53.

  716. Now

  717. what you need to be

  718. considering as I'm

  719. reading this to you

  720. is the speaking

  721. of Christ.

  722. Verse 13 says

  723. behold

  724. my servant.

  725. It's God speaking

  726. behold

  727. my servant.

  728. And this is a

  729. description

  730. this is a prediction

  731. of what was

  732. going to happen

  733. and what did

  734. happen to

  735. Jesus Christ.

  736. This was

  737. Jesus Christ

  738. suffering

  739. on the cross

  740. on our behalf.

  741. Both the

  742. physical suffering

  743. as well as the

  744. spiritual suffering

  745. as God pours

  746. his wrath out.

  747. As God

  748. turns his face away

  749. from the perfect

  750. union they had

  751. from eternity past

  752. as he punishes

  753. in Christ

  754. as a just God

  755. having to punish

  756. sin he punishes

  757. our sin

  758. in Jesus.

  759. Listen carefully.

  760. Behold

  761. my servant

  762. shall act wisely.

  763. He shall be

  764. high and

  765. lifted up

  766. and shall be

  767. exalted.

  768. As many were

  769. astonished at you

  770. his appearance

  771. was so marred

  772. beyond human

  773. semblance

  774. and his form

  775. beyond that

  776. of the children

  777. of mankind.

  778. So shall he

  779. sprinkle many

  780. nations.

  781. Kings shall

  782. shut their mouths

  783. because of him

  784. for that which

  785. has not been

  786. told them

  787. they see

  788. and that which

  789. they have not

  790. heard

  791. they understand.

  792. Who has

  793. believed what

  794. he has heard

  795. from us

  796. and to whom

  797. has the arm

  798. of the Lord

  799. been revealed?

  800. For he grew up

  801. before him

  802. like a young

  803. plant

  804. and like a root

  805. out of dry

  806. ground.

  807. He had no

  808. form of majesty

  809. that we should

  810. look at him

  811. and no beauty

  812. that we should

  813. desire him.

  814. He was

  815. despised

  816. and rejected

  817. by men

  818. a man of

  819. sorrows

  820. and acquainted

  821. with grief

  822. and as one

  823. from whom

  824. men hide

  825. their faces

  826. he was

  827. despised

  828. and we

  829. esteemed

  830. him not.

  831. Surely

  832. he has

  833. borne

  834. our griefs

  835. and carried

  836. our sorrows

  837. yet we

  838. esteemed

  839. him stricken

  840. smitten

  841. by God

  842. and afflicted.

  843. But he

  844. was pierced

  845. for our

  846. transgressions.

  847. He was

  848. crushed

  849. for our

  850. iniquities.

  851. Upon him

  852. was the

  853. chastisement

  854. that brought

  855. us peace

  856. and with

  857. his wounds

  858. we are

  859. healed.

  860. All we

  861. like sheep

  862. have gone

  863. astray.

  864. We have

  865. turned

  866. everyone

  867. to his

  868. own way

  869. and the

  870. Lord

  871. has laid

  872. on him

  873. the iniquity

  874. of us

  875. all.

  876. He was

  877. oppressed

  878. and he

  879. was afflicted

  880. yet he

  881. opened

  882. not his

  883. mouth

  884. like a

  885. lamb

  886. that is

  887. led to

  888. the

  889. slaughter

  890. and like

  891. a sheep

  892. that before

  893. its shears

  894. is silent

  895. so he

  896. opened

  897. not his

  898. mouth.

  899. By

  900. oppression

  901. and judgment

  902. he was

  903. taken

  904. away

  905. and as

  906. for his

  907. generation

  908. who

  909. considered

  910. that he

  911. was cut

  912. off

  913. out of

  914. the land

  915. of the

  916. living

  917. stricken

  918. for the

  919. transgression

  920. of my

  921. people.

  922. And they

  923. made his

  924. grave

  925. with the

  926. wicked

  927. and with

  928. a rich

  929. man

  930. in his

  931. death

  932. although he

  933. had done

  934. no violence

  935. and there

  936. was no

  937. deceit

  938. in his

  939. mouth.

  940. Yet it

  941. was the

  942. will of

  943. the

  944. Lord

  945. to

  946. crush

  947. him.

  948. He

  949. has

  950. put

  951. him

  952. to

  953. grief.

  954. When his

  955. soul

  956. makes

  957. an offering

  958. for guilt

  959. he shall

  960. see

  961. his

  962. offspring.

  963. That's

  964. the

  965. church.

  966. He

  967. shall

  968. prolong

  969. his

  970. days.

  971. The

  972. will

  973. of

  974. the

  975. Lord

  976. shall

  977. prosper

  978. in

  979. his

  980. hand.

  981. Out of

  982. the

  983. anguish

  984. of his

  985. soul

  986. he

  987. shall

  988. see

  989. and

  990. be

  991. satisfied.

  992. By

  993. his

  994. knowledge

  995. shall

  996. the

  997. righteous

  998. one

  999. my

  1000. servant

  1001. make

  1002. many

  1003. to be

  1004. accounted

  1005. righteous

  1006. and he

  1007. shall

  1008. bear

  1009. their

  1010. iniquities.

  1011. Therefore

  1012. I

  1013. will

  1014. divide

  1015. him

  1016. a

  1017. portion

  1018. with

  1019. the

  1020. many

  1021. and he

  1022. shall

  1023. divide

  1024. the

  1025. spoil

  1026. with

  1027. the

  1028. strong

  1029. because

  1030. he

  1031. poured

  1032. out

  1033. his

  1034. soul

  1035. to

  1036. death

  1037. and

  1038. was

  1039. numbered

  1040. with

  1041. the

  1042. transgressors

  1043. yet he

  1044. bore

  1045. the sin

  1046. of

  1047. many

  1048. and

  1049. makes

  1050. intercession

  1051. for

  1052. the

  1053. transgressors.

  1054. This

  1055. is

  1056. Jesus

  1057. God's

  1058. servant.

  1059. Jesus

  1060. himself

  1061. said

  1062. in Mark

  1063. 10

  1064. 45

  1065. for

  1066. even

  1067. the

  1068. son

  1069. of

  1070. man

  1071. came

  1072. not

  1073. to

  1074. be

  1075. served

  1076. but

  1077. to

  1078. serve

  1079. and

  1080. to

  1081. as a

  1082. ransom

  1083. for

  1084. many.

  1085. So

  1086. Peter

  1087. says

  1088. before

  1089. this

  1090. Jewish

  1091. audience

  1092. that

  1093. our

  1094. God

  1095. the

  1096. God

  1097. of

  1098. our

  1099. forefathers

  1100. has

  1101. glorified

  1102. his

  1103. servant

  1104. who

  1105. is

  1106. Jesus.

  1107. Number

  1108. two

  1109. he

  1110. calls

  1111. him

  1112. Jesus

  1113. he

  1114. has

  1115. glorified

  1116. his

  1117. servant

  1118. Jesus

  1119. whom

  1120. you

  1121. delivered

  1122. over

  1123. and

  1124. denied

  1125. in the

  1126. presence

  1127. of

  1128. Pilate

  1129. when

  1130. he

  1131. had

  1132. decided

  1133. to

  1134. release

  1135. him.

  1136. The

  1137. name

  1138. Jesus

  1139. is

  1140. the

  1141. Greek

  1142. form

  1143. of

  1144. the

  1145. Hebrew

  1146. name

  1147. Joshua

  1148. which

  1149. means

  1150. the

  1151. Lord

  1152. is

  1153. salvation.

  1154. You

  1155. may

  1156. recall

  1157. in a

  1158. dream

  1159. an

  1160. angel

  1161. told

  1162. Joseph

  1163. Jesus'

  1164. father

  1165. what

  1166. his

  1167. son's

  1168. name

  1169. was

  1170. to

  1171. be.

  1172. Matthew

  1173. 1

  1174. 21

  1175. records

  1176. us

  1177. for

  1178. this

  1179. says

  1180. she

  1181. being

  1182. Mary

  1183. will

  1184. bear

  1185. a

  1186. son

  1187. and

  1188. you

  1189. shall

  1190. call

  1191. his

  1192. name

  1193. Jesus

  1194. for

  1195. he

  1196. will

  1519. too

  1520. often

  1521. the

  1522. gospel

  1523. gets

  1524. kind

  1525. of

  1526. half

  1527. preached

  1528. and

  1529. that

  1530. is

  1538. He

  1539. took

  1540. away

  1541. our

  1543. but

  1544. that

  1545. only

  1546. brings

  1547. us

  1548. up

  1549. to

  1550. neutral

  1551. we

  1552. also

  1553. need

  1554. his

  1555. righteousness

  1556. it's

  1557. called

  1558. double

  1559. imputation

  1560. he lived

  1561. a perfect

  1562. life

  1563. we need

  1564. both

  1565. that's why

  1566. I say

  1567. all the

  1568. time

  1569. we need

  1570. to

  1571. believe

  1572. in

  1573. Jesus

  1574. person

  1575. and

  1576. his

  1577. work

  1578. both

  1579. are

  1580. true

  1581. his

  1582. active

  1583. and

  1584. passive

  1585. obedience

  1586. his

  1587. life

  1588. lived

  1589. to

  1590. God

  1591. and

  1592. for

  1593. God

  1594. perfectly

  1595. as

  1596. well

  1597. as

  1598. his

  1599. death

  1600. we

  1601. need

  1602. both

  1603. things

  1604. he

  1605. accomplished

  1606. both

  1607. things

  1608. if

  1609. we

  1610. believe

  1611. in

  1614. Corinthians

  1615. 5

  1621. God

  1622. made

  1624. Christ

  1625. to

  1627. sin

  1628. who

  1629. knew

  1632. so

  1633. that

  1634. in

  1636. we

  1637. might

  1638. become

  1639. the

  1643. Jesus

  1644. righteousness

  1649. Jesus

  1650. by

  1651. Peter

  1653. called

  1654. the

  1674. whom

  1675. God

  1676. raised

  1677. from

  1678. the

  1680. and

  1681. to

  1682. this

  1683. we

  1684. are

  1685. witnesses

  1686. !

  1687. may

  1688. say

  1689. the

  1690. prince

  1691. of

  1692. life

  1693. ruling

  1694. over

  1695. life

  1696. he's

  1697. the

  1698. creator

  1699. of

  1700. all

  1701. things

  1702. created

  1703. as well

  1704. as

  1735. I

  1736. think

  1737. helps

  1738. us

  1739. understand

  1740. what

  1741. it

  1742. means

  1743. Peter

  1744. says

  1745. the

  1746. author

  1747. of

  1749. Paul

  1750. writes

  1751. he

  1768. for

  1769. by

  1770. him

  1771. all

  1791. all

  1792. things

  1793. were

  1794. created

  1795. through

  1796. him

  1797. and

  1798. for

  1799. him

  1800. and

  1801. he

  1802. is

  1803. before

  1804. all

  1806. and

  1807. in

  1808. him

  1809. all

  1810. things

  1811. hold

  1812. together

  1813. and

  1824. he

  1825. is

  1826. the

  1827. beginning

  1828. !

  1829. the

  1830. author

  1831. of

  1832. life

  1833. put

  1834. to

  1835. death

  1836. but

  1837. God

  1838. raised

  1839. him

  1840. from

  1841. the

  1842. dead

  1843. worked

  1844. the

  1845. great

  1846. miracle

  1847. of

  1848. resurrection

  1849. and

  1850. brought

  1851. him

  1852. back

  1853. to

  1855. and

  1856. again

  1857. this

  1858. juxtaposition

  1859. set

  1861. here

  1862. the

  1876. raised

  1877. again

  1878. to

  1879. life

  1880. how

  1881. foolish

  1882. it

  1883. would

  1884. be

  1885. to

  1886. call

  1887. him

  1888. the

  1889. author

  1890. of

  1892. if

  1893. he

  1894. were

  1897. if

  1898. he

  1900. live

  1901. and

  1902. reign

  1903. even

  1904. now

  1905. and

  1906. you

  1907. got

  1908. to

  1909. note

  1910. with

  1911. the

  1912. apostles

  1913. the

  1914. timidity

  1915. that existed

  1916. with him

  1917. but

  1918. now

  1919. the

  1920. great

  1921. boldness

  1922. right

  1923. he

  1924. says

  1925. to

  1926. this

  1927. the

  1929. of

  1930. team

  1931. we

  1932. are

  1933. witnesses

  1934. !

  1935. What

  1936. brings

  1937. about

  1938. this

  1939. great

  1940. boldness

  1941. in

  1942. them?

  1943. The

  1944. risen

  1945. !

  1946. Savior!

  1947. He's

  1948. alive!

  1949. We're

  1950. no

  1951. longer

  1952. heartbroken

  1953. We're

  1954. now

  1955. extolling

  1956. his

  1957. greatness

  1958. It's

  1959. also

  1960. the

  1961. reason

  1962. that

  1963. they

  1964. made

  1965. such

  1966. effort

  1967. such

  1968. labor

  1969. and

  1970. we're

  1971. going

  1972. to

  1973. see

  1974. it

  1975. again

  1976. and

  1977. again

  1978. and

  1980. in

  1981. the

  1992. Jesus

  1993. that

  1994. they

  1995. had

  1996. walked

  1997. with

  2030. I'm sure

  2031. there's

  2032. a lot

  2033. of

  2034. sermons

  2035. being

  2036. preached

  2037. on

  2038. this

  2039. text

  2040. this

  2041. morning

  2042. there's

  2043. this

  2044. debate

  2045. going

  2046. on

  2047. in

  2048. the

  2049. Corinthian

  2050. church

  2051. about

  2052. whether

  2053. or not

  2054. resurrection

  2055. is

  2056. even

  2057. a

  2058. possibility

  2059. if

  2060. it's

  2061. even

  2062. a

  2063. thing

  2064. at

  2065. all

  2066. and

  2067. Paul

  2068. writes

  2069. to them

  2070. for

  2071. if

  2072. the

  2073. dead

  2074. are

  2075. not

  2076. raised

  2077. not

  2078. even

  2079. Christ

  2080. has

  2081. been

  2082. raised

  2083. if

  2084. you

  2085. don't

  2086. think

  2087. there's

  2088. such

  2089. a

  2090. thing

  2091. as

  2092. resurrection

  2093. then

  2094. even

  2095. Christ

  2096. hasn't

  2097. been

  2098. raised

  2099. verse

  2100. 17

  2101. if

  2102. Christ

  2103. has

  2104. not

  2105. been

  2106. raised

  2107. your

  2108. faith

  2109. is

  2110. futile

  2111. and

  2112. you

  2113. are

  2114. still

  2115. in

  2116. your

  2117. sins

  2118. he

  2119. doesn't

  2120. have

  2121. power

  2122. over

  2123. death

  2124. he

  2125. can't

  2126. possibly

  2127. be

  2128. the

  2129. author

  2130. of

  2131. life

  2132. he

  2133. was

  2134. just

  2135. a

  2136. man

  2137. a

  2138. lunatic

  2139. to be

  2140. sure

  2141. if

  2142. he's

  2143. not

  2144. raised

  2145. verse

  2146. 18

  2147. then

  2148. those

  2149. also

  2150. who

  2151. have

  2152. fallen

  2153. asleep

  2154. in

  2155. Christ

  2156. have

  2157. perished

  2158. if

  2159. in

  2160. Christ

  2161. we

  2162. have

  2163. hope

  2164. in

  2165. this

  2166. life

  2167. only

  2168. we

  2169. are

  2170. of

  2171. all

  2172. people

  2173. most

  2174. to be

  2175. pitied

  2176. fools

  2177. we

  2178. are

  2179. fools

  2180. if

  2181. Christ

  2182. is

  2183. not

  2184. raised

  2185. praise

  2186. God

  2187. that

  2188. he

  2189. is

  2190. and

  2191. we

  2192. can

  2193. be

  2194. fools

  2195. for

  2196. him

  2197. right

  2198. still

  2199. think

  2200. I'm

  2201. a

  2202. fool

  2203. lastly

  2204. fifth

  2205. Christ

  2206. he

  2207. calls

  2208. him

  2209. Christ

  2210. verse

  2211. 18

  2212. but

  2213. what

  2214. God

  2215. foretold

  2216. by the

  2217. mouth

  2218. of all

  2219. the

  2220. prophets

  2221. that

  2222. his

  2223. Christ

  2224. would

  2225. suffer

  2226. he

  2227. thus

  2228. fulfilled

  2229. Christ

  2230. is

  2231. the

  2232. Greek

  2233. form

  2234. of

  2235. the

  2236. Hebrew

  2237. word

  2238. Messiah

  2239. which

  2240. simply

  2241. means

  2242. anointed

  2243. one

  2244. this

  2245. prediction

  2246. this

  2247. predictive

  2248. language

  2249. in the

  2250. Old Testament

  2251. scripture

  2252. this

  2253. was

  2254. the

  2255. one

  2256. the

  2257. Messiah

  2258. the

  2259. Christ

  2260. was

  2261. the

  2262. one

  2263. that

  2264. the

  2265. Jews

  2266. were

  2267. waiting

  2268. for

  2269. to

  2270. fulfill

  2271. these

  2272. promises

  2273. of

  2274. God

  2275. to

  2276. them

  2277. which

  2278. they

  2279. seemed

  2280. to

  2281. dramatically

  2282. misunderstand

  2283. at least

  2284. pretty

  2285. broadly

  2286. they

  2287. misunderstood

  2288. because

  2289. they

  2290. were

  2291. waiting

  2292. for

  2293. this

  2294. Messiah

  2295. to

  2296. come

  2297. !

  2298. They

  2299. thought

  2300. he

  2301. was

  2302. going

  2303. to

  2304. be

  2305. a

  2306. king

  2307. like

  2308. David

  2309. who

  2310. would

  2311. come

  2312. and

  2313. reign

  2314. in

  2315. the

  2316. earthly

  2317. realm

  2318. they

  2319. misunderstood

  2320. that

  2321. he

  2322. was

  2323. going

  2324. to

  2325. come

  2326. and

  2327. reign

  2328. in

  2329. the

  2330. heavenly

  2331. realm

  2332. that

  2333. he

  2334. was

  2335. going

  2336. to

  2337. bring

  2338. his

  2339. kingdom

  2340. in

  2341. the

  2342. hearts

  2343. of

  2344. men

  2345. this

  2346. is

  2347. the

  2348. Christ

  2349. though

  2350. this

  2351. is

  2352. the

  2353. fulfillment

  2354. of

  2355. that

  2356. it's

  2357. significant

  2358. in

  2359. verse

  2360. 18

  2361. that

  2362. Peter

  2363. says

  2364. this

  2365. this

  2366. !

  2367. Christ

  2368. the

  2369. one

  2370. that

  2371. was

  2372. spoken

  2373. of

  2374. beforehand

  2375. the

  2376. one

  2382. of

  2383. all

  2384. the

  2385. prophets

  2386. none

  2387. of

  2388. this

  2389. happened

  2390. apart

  2391. from

  2392. the

  2393. preordained

  2394. plan

  2395. of

  2396. God

  2397. God

  2398. has

  2399. been

  2400. part

  2401. of

  2402. God's

  2403. redemptive

  2404. purpose

  2405. to

  2407. together

  2408. to

  2409. himself

  2410. a

  2411. people

  2412. I

  2413. hope

  2414. you're

  2415. counted

  2416. in

  2417. that

  2418. number

  2419. this

  2420. morning

  2421. I

  2422. hope

  2423. you're

  2484. on

  2485. the

  2486. house

  2487. of

  2488. David

  2806. pitiful

  2807. you

  2808. you

  2809. acted

  2810. in

  2811. ignorance

  2812. so

  2813. thirdly

  2814. we see

  2815. the

  2816. call

  2817. of

  2818. Peter's

  2819. preaching

  2820. we're

  2821. getting

  2822. really

  2823. close

  2824. if

  2825. you're

  2826. wondering

  2827. !

  2828. verse

  2829. 19

  2830. repent

  2831. therefore

  2832. and

  2833. turn

  2834. back

  2835. that

  2836. your

  2837. sins

  2838. may

  2839. be

  2840. blotted

  2841. out

  2842. to

  2843. repent

  2844. is

  2845. to

  2846. change

  2847. one's

  2848. mind

  2849. or

  2850. purpose

  2851. but

  2852. it's

  2853. much

  2854. weightier

  2855. in the

  2856. original

  2857. text

  2858. it's

  2859. much

  2860. more

  2861. than

  2862. just

  2863. a

  2864. simple

  2865. intellectual

  2866. decision

  2867. I'm

  2868. saying

  2869. to

  2870. you

  2871. that

  2872. if

  2873. you

  2874. have

  2875. responded

  2876. in

  2877. faith

  2878. you

  2879. thought

  2880. if

  2881. you've

  2882. raised

  2883. a

  2884. hand

  2885. while

  2886. no

  2887. one

  2888. was

  2889. watching

  2890. because

  2891. you're

  2892. so

  2893. !

  2894. how

  2895. embarrassing

  2896. I need

  2897. to

  2898. follow

  2899. Jesus

  2900. and

  2901. you

  2902. tiptoed

  2903. down

  2904. an

  2905. aisle

  2906. and

  2907. you

  2908. were

  2909. taken

  2910. off

  2911. into

  2912. a

  2913. side

  2914. room

  2915. and

  2916. someone

  2917. said

  2918. to

  2919. you

  2920. write

  2921. this

  2922. date

  2923. in

  2924. your

  2925. Bible

  2926. now

  2927. you're

  2928. a

  2929. Christian

  2930. it's

  2931. hogwash

  2932. it's

  2933. absolute

  2934. insanity

  2935. and I'm

  2936. not saying

  2937. that you

  2938. can't

  2939. come

  2940. to

  2941. faith

  2942. in

  2943. Christ

  2944. through

  2945. that

  2946. type

  2947. of

  2948. invitation

  2949. I'm

  2950. not

  2951. suggesting

  2952. that

  2953. all

  2954. I

  2955. think

  2956. that

  2957. countless

  2958. !

  2959. people

  2960. have

  2961. but

  2962. countless

  2963. numerous

  2964. multitudes

  2965. of people

  2966. have a

  2967. false

  2968. assurance

  2969. of their

  2970. salvation

  2971. there's

  2972. no

  2973. evidence

  2974. of their

  2975. heart

  2976. turned from

  2977. their

  2978. wickedness

  2979. and turned

  2980. to God

  2981. they

  2982. just

  2983. simply

  2984. walked

  2985. down

  2986. the

  2987. Nile

  2988. took

  2989. a

  2990. card

  2991. folded

  2992. it

  2993. in

  2994. their

  2995. back

  2996. pocket

  2997. I

  2998. grew

  2999. up

  3000. in

  3001. a

  3002. church

  3003. that

  3004. told

  3005. me

  3006. if

  3007. I

  3008. ever

  3009. doubted

  3010. my

  3011. salvation

  3012. to

  3013. look

  3014. at

  3015. the

  3016. date

  3017. in

  3018. the

  3019. front

  3020. of

  3021. my

  3022. Bible

  3023. this

  3024. is

  3025. not

  3026. biblical

  3027. there's

  3028. no

  3029. language

  3030. for

  3031. this

  3032. anywhere

  3033. in

  3034. the

  3035. scripture

  3036. how

  3037. do

  3038. we

  3039. to

  3040. be

  3041. assured

  3042. the

  3043. evidence

  3044. I

  3045. have

  3046. placed

  3047. believing

  3048. faith

  3049. in

  3050. Christ

  3051. I

  3052. me

  3053. apart

  3054. he's

  3055. working

  3056. righteousness

  3057. into

  3058. me

  3059. please

  3060. hear that

  3061. carefully

  3062. this

  3063. morning

  3064. we

  3065. live

  3066. in

  3067. a

  3068. culture

  3069. that

  3070. has

  3071. probably

  3072. counted

  3073. you

  3074. at

  3075. some

  3076. point

  3077. and

  3078. you're

  3079. not

  3080. a

  3081. believer

  3082. at

  3083. all

  3084. this

  3085. is

  3086. so

  3087. much

  3088. weightier

  3089. than

  3090. a

  3091. simple

  3092. intellectual

  3093. decision

  3094. John

  3095. MacArthur

  3096. said

  3097. in his

  3098. commentary

  3099. on this

  3100. text

  3101. repentance

  3102. is a

  3103. change

  3104. of

  3105. mind

  3106. that

  3107. results

  3108. in a

  3109. change

  3110. in

  3111. behavior

  3112. turn

  3113. back

  3114. this

  3115. additional

  3116. thing

  3117. that

  3118. Peter

  3119. says

  3120. repent

  3121. therefore

  3122. and

  3123. turn

  3124. back

  3125. adds

  3126. to

  3127. this

  3128. meaning

  3129. it

  3130. means

  3131. to

  3132. return

  3133. it's

  3134. used

  3135. frequently

  3136. to

  3137. speak

  3138. of

  3139. sinners

  3140. turning

  3141. to

  3142. God

  3143. and it

  3144. just

  3145. reinforces

  3146. that idea

  3147. of what

  3148. repentance

  3149. looks

  3150. like

  3151. it's

  3152. turning

  3153. away

  3154. from

  3155. your

  3156. sin

  3157. and

  3158. it's

  3159. turning

  3160. to

  3161. God

  3162. by

  3163. faith

  3164. in

  3165. Christ

  3166. repent

  3167. repent

  3168. and believe

  3169. the gospel

  3170. of Jesus

  3171. Christ

  3172. take up

  3173. this person

  3174. and work

  3175. this is the

  3176. language of the

  3177. scripture

  3178. this is the

  3179. language of the

  3180. scripture

  3181. this is the

  3182. call

  3183. of the

  3184. gospel

  3185. it's

  3186. Peter's

  3187. call

  3188. to those

  3189. who are

  3190. in his

  3191. hearing

  3192. repent

  3193. and turn

  3194. back

  3195. now there's

  3196. much talk

  3197. in the world

  3198. today about

  3199. calling

  3200. both for

  3201. believers

  3202. and

  3203. otherwise

  3204. people looking

  3205. for cosmic

  3206. signs

  3207. for what

  3208. they're

  3209. meant to be

  3210. doing

  3211. with their

  3212. lives

  3213. let me tell

  3214. you and

  3215. clarify this

  3216. for you

  3217. God calls

  3218. us to

  3219. two things

  3220. to two

  3221. things

  3222. first

  3223. repentance

  3224. here it is

  3225. in Peter's

  3226. preaching

  3227. all men

  3228. are called

  3229. to repent

  3230. and place

  3231. faith

  3232. in Jesus

  3233. Christ

  3234. Acts 17

  3235. 30

  3236. Paul says

  3237. the times

  3238. of ignorance

  3239. God

  3240. overlooked

  3241. but now

  3242. he commands

  3243. all people

  3244. everywhere

  3245. to repent

  3246. place faith

  3247. in Jesus

  3248. Christ

  3249. he's the

  3250. only way

  3251. of salvation

  3252. your destruction

  3253. is sure

  3254. your damnation

  3255. eternal

  3256. if you don't

  3257. believe

  3258. in Christ

  3259. secondly

  3260. the other

  3261. call

  3262. for all

  3263. of us

  3264. is to

  3265. preach

  3266. repentance

  3267. those who

  3268. have

  3269. repented

  3270. are to

  3271. preach

  3272. repentance

  3273. follow the

  3274. example

  3275. of Jesus

  3276. and Peter

  3277. and Paul

  3278. Acts 20

  3279. 20 and 21

  3280. Paul says

  3281. I did not

  3282. shrink

  3283. from declaring

  3284. to you

  3285. anything

  3286. that was

  3287. profitable

  3288. and teaching

  3289. you in

  3290. public

  3291. and from

  3292. house to

  3293. house

  3294. all kinds

  3295. of ways

  3296. I taught

  3297. to you

  3298. these things

  3299. testifying

  3300. both to

  3301. Jews

  3302. and to

  3303. Greeks

  3304. of repentance

  3305. toward God

  3306. and of

  3307. faith

  3308. in our

  3309. Lord Jesus

  3310. Christ

  3311. we're called

  3312. to believe

  3313. we're called

  3314. to bring

  3315. about belief

  3316. by the power

  3317. of God

  3318. in others

  3319. so we see

  3320. in our text

  3321. the confirmation

  3322. of Peter's

  3323. preaching

  3324. the content

  3325. of his

  3326. preaching

  3327. and the

  3328. call

  3329. of Peter's

  3330. preaching

  3331. let's pray

  3332. together

  3333. to

  3334. to

  3335. to

  3336. to

  3337. to

  3338. to

  3339. !
