  1. In our continued study of Acts, we have come to Acts 3 and our text for today will be verses 19 through 26.

  2. ! Last week, we looked together at Peter's second sermon, the beginning of it at very least, and we ended at verse 19.

  3. And we saw that like his first sermon, which we see in chapter 2 of Acts, this sermon was preceded by a miracle.

  4. The first time by the disciples speaking in many different languages, this time the healing of a lame beggar.

  5. And these miracles were meant to give confirmation to the message that was about to be preached.

  6. God sets the stage. In fact, we see in this sermon that Peter and John are headed to the temple to pray.

  7. Verse 1 of chapter 3, his intention was not to go to the temple to preach.

  8. They encounter this man and this miracle is performed and a great crowd gathers to them.

  9. Now, this sermon that he preaches follows the same format of his first sermon.

  10. And, beloved, it's important for us to remember as we observe the Apostle Peter, who was such a high point in redemptive history,

  11. such a man to carry the gospel to these people that we are all called to be preachers of the gospel of Christ

  12. amongst our neighbors and our co-workers and our classmates.

  13. And so we need to pay attention to the content of these sermons.

  14. Same format.

  15. He first exalts Christ.

  16. He second, indicts his listeners, calls them guilty.

  17. And he third, calls his listeners to repent.

  18. Last week, as we looked at the beginning of Paul's, excuse me, Peter's second sermon,

  19. he exalts Christ through five names given to Jesus.

  20. First, his servant and then the name itself, Jesus.

  21. Verse 13.

  22. He calls him the holy and righteous one.

  23. Verse 14.

  24. The author of life.

  25. Verse 15.

  26. And Christ.

  27. Verse 18.

  28. 18.

  29. And all of these names are meant to draw his Jewish listeners' minds to all of the things that the Old Testament had to say about who the Messiah,

  30. the anointed one of God, was to be.

  31. This is what they longed for.

  32. They were waiting for this Messiah.

  33. And they wanted him to come and they wanted him to establish his kingdom as the Old Testament had promised.

  34. They wanted him to deliver them from Roman rule, which the Old Testament had not promised.

  35. They wanted another David to restore the glory of Israel.

  36. And the kingdom comes in a much, much different way than they expected.

  37. And they rejected Christ as the Messiah.

  38. They didn't meet.

  39. He didn't meet their expectations.

  40. And so Peter goes on to indict the listeners.

  41. Verse 13.

  42. Speaking of Christ, Peter says to them,

  43. Whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to release him.

  44. Pilate was going to let him go, but you denied him in the presence of Pilate.

  45. Again, verse 14.

  46. But you denied the holy and righteous one.

  47. Verse 15.

  48. And you killed the author of life.

  49. You didn't understand Jesus to be who he is.

  50. And you had him put to death.

  51. And then he goes on to call his listeners to repent.

  52. And we just touched on that last week.

  53. We ended with verse 19.

  54. Repent, therefore, and turn back that your sins may be blotted out.

  55. And he goes on then to expand on this call of repentance as the summary of his sermon on this day.

  56. So this morning we're going to pick up at verse 19.

  57. And we're going to observe together the necessity and the nature of repentance in this conclusion of Peter second sermon.

  58. So I'll begin reading in verse 19.

  59. But before I do, we remind you, this is God's word to us.

  60. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  61. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  62. Verse 19.

  63. Verse 19.

  64. Repent, therefore, and turn back that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send the Christ appointed for you.

  65. Jesus, who heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

  66. Moses said, the Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

  67. You shall listen to him and whatever he tells you.

  68. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.

  69. And all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him also proclaimed these days.

  70. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, and in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

  71. God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

  72. Now, as we look this morning at the necessity nature of repentance, I'll frame our study in the following ways.

  73. Number one, four prompters toward repentance.

  74. Four prompters toward repentance.

  75. How does God work to bring about repentance in his people?

  76. And secondly, four results of repentance.

  77. What are the blessings that accompany repentance?

  78. So four prompters, four results.

  79. But before we get to those particulars, it must be said that all people everywhere are called to repent.

  80. As we consider repentance this morning, as we talk about what it means and what marks it, how it is that it comes to pass.

  81. You need to sit and you need to consider.

  82. Have you ever repented?

  83. Have you ever truly been sorrowful for your sin and turned away from it and turned to Christ?

  84. Have you ever truly embraced him for the salvation of your soul?

  85. And secondly, if you have, if you're found in Christ, do you need now to repent?

  86. The Christian life is a life of repentance.

  87. Beloved, we go on repenting, turning from sin and turning to Christ, embracing him in greater and greater degrees.

  88. So have you ever and do you need now to repent?

  89. God's design is that all people repent.

  90. Acts 1730.

  91. Paul preaches the times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

  92. The core message of Jesus is preaching revolves around three commands, just three.

  93. They all revolve around these three.

  94. Number one, repent of your sins.

  95. We're talking about this morning.

  96. Repent of your sins.

  97. The second and third are love each other and your neighbor and go and make disciples.

  98. We could say we could sum that up to say, repent of your sins and lovingly help others do the same.

  99. Repent of your sins.

  100. Love each other and your neighbor.

  101. Go and make disciples.

  102. This is what Jesus came and preached.

  103. The very beginning of Mark's gospel, chapter one, verse 15.

  104. Jesus begins his ministry by saying the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  105. Repent, repent and believe in the gospel.

  106. But what does it mean to repent?

  107. There could be many misconceptions about this.

  108. Verse 19, Peter says to them, repent, therefore, and turn back.

  109. The Greek word here translated repent literally means, simply means to change one's mind or purpose.

  110. Repentance.

  111. The repentance is a turning away from sin, recognizing the way in which it grieves the Lord, turning away from it and turning toward Christ.

  112. Placing faith in his person and his work, recognizing that you need his righteousness and you need him to take the punishment of God for your sin.

  113. It's weightier than just a simple intellectual decision.

  114. And decisionism runs rampant in our churches these days.

  115. A presentation is made to you.

  116. You are pressed to a decision.

  117. And I hope that the majority of those who are pushed in this way do come to faith.

  118. I'm afraid that's not the case.

  119. We need to repent properly in order to be saved and to repent and to not then change the way in which you live.

  120. It's not repentance at all.

  121. John McArthur says this.

  122. I quoted it to you last week.

  123. Repentance is a change of mind that results in a change in behavior.

  124. And this little phrase in the beginning of verse 19, turn back, adds to that meaning.

  125. Repent, therefore, and turn back.

  126. Turn back to what?

  127. Back to God.

  128. Back to the creator.

  129. Right?

  130. To live in a way that pleases him.

  131. Some translations render that phrase be converted.

  132. And the Greek word can mean that.

  133. And I've read many cases this week suggesting that that's the proper identifier for it to be converted.

  134. But we know that God is the one who converts.

  135. That God is the one who changes hearts.

  136. That sends his spirit into the body of men in order to believe.

  137. And the verb is an active verb.

  138. I heard a preacher I respect deeply this week say that it's a passive verb.

  139. And I thought, how fascinating.

  140. If you don't know what that means, if it's active, the...

  141. Excuse me, my brain just blanked out on my grammatical language.

  142. Not the object.

  143. The person acting.

  144. Let me just say it that way.

  145. The person acting in the sentence...

  146. Don't yell it out at me because it'll get my brain all frazzled.

  147. The person acting in the sentence...

  148. If it's active, they're the one doing the action.

  149. If it's passive, the action is being done to them.

  150. Okay?

  151. You catching that?

  152. So again, pastor I deeply respect said that it's a passive verb,

  153. which would mean that the activity is being done to the individual.

  154. In that case, I think converted would be the proper way.

  155. But it's not.

  156. It's an active verb.

  157. And I wrestle with that.

  158. I won't bore you with the detail of it.

  159. But it is, in fact, active.

  160. So I think turn back is a better way to understand this.

  161. And what Peter's trying to say to them is that you must repent.

  162. You must show sorrow.

  163. You must be apologetic for your sin.

  164. And he's bounding on to that.

  165. He's adding to that extra meaning to say that we have to turn to God.

  166. Repentance is a change of mind that results in a change in behavior.

  167. And it's illustrated beautifully in a parable that Jesus taught in Matthew chapter 21.

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  168. This is verses 28 through 31.

  169. Jesus said,

  170. A man had two sons.

  171. And he went to the first and said,

  172. Son, go and work in the vineyard today.

  173. And he answered the son,

  174. I will not.

  175. But afterward,

  176. he changed his mind and went.

  177. And he went to the other son and said the same.

  178. And he answered,

  179. I go, sir,

  180. but did not go.

  181. Which of the two did the will of his father?

  182. They said the first.

  183. Jesus said to them,

  184. Truly, I say to you,

  185. the tax collectors and the prostitutes,

  186. go into the kingdom of God before you.

  187. What he's saying to them is those who recognize their sin,

  188. who are not self-righteous,

  189. righteous,

  190. who initially say to God,

  191. I will not.

  192. But afterward,

  193. change their mind and their behavior

  194. are the ones who are accepted into the kingdom.

  195. The first son not only had a change of mind,

  196. but a change in action.

  197. Repentance is a redirecting of one's life

  198. in light of the grievous nature of their sin

  199. and the goodness of God to them in Christ.

  200. So the call this morning from Peter's sermon

  201. is for all people everywhere to repent.

  202. And there are four prompters,

  203. at least four prompters toward repentance.

  204. Four ways in which God works to bring about repentance.

  205. The first one is knowledge of the truth.

  206. Knowledge of the truth.

  207. The knowledge of God's revealed truth

  208. is meant to lead people to repentance.

  209. It serves to that great end.

  210. That truth is given to us in the Bible.

  211. God's revealed truth.

  212. Do you recall the story of the rich man and Lazarus?

  213. The rich man is suffering in hell

  214. and requests of Father Abraham

  215. that Lazarus be sent to preach to his brothers.

  216. Remember this story?

  217. What did Jesus say?

  218. Happens in the story.

  219. Luke chapter 16, verses 27 to 31.

    Luke 16:27–31

  220. And he, Jesus said,

  221. excuse me, not, I'm sorry.

  222. The rich man said,

  223. and he said,

  224. then I beg you, Father,

  225. to send him to my father's house.

  226. For I have five brothers

  227. so that he may warn them

  228. lest they also come into this place of torment.

  229. But Abraham said,

  230. Jesus is telling the story,

  231. they have Moses and the prophets.

  232. He's saying if they have the scripture,

  233. let them hear them.

  234. And he said,

  235. the rich man,

  236. no, Father Abraham,

  237. but if someone goes to them from the dead,

  238. they will repent.

  239. He said to him,

  240. if they do not hear Moses and the prophets,

  241. neither will they be convinced

  242. if someone should rise from the dead.

  243. The truth of God

  244. is all that's necessary

  245. to bring people to repentance.

  246. Repentance, right?

  247. Worked in them by the Spirit of God.

  248. Peter's called to them,

  249. repent, therefore,

  250. and turn back, right?

  251. Why?

  252. The therefore, right?

  253. You hear it asked.

  254. What is the therefore?

  255. Therefore,

  256. why should they repent?

  257. In light of the truth

  258. that Peter has just preached to them, right?

  259. He's exposed their sin.

  260. He's indicted them for killing Christ.

  261. For having an improper understanding

  262. of the Son of God.

  263. The knowledge of the truth

  264. is meant to expose our sinfulness

  265. in order to drive us

  266. to our knees in repentance.

  267. In our text,

  268. Peter is calling to his listeners

  269. to repent for the very first time.

  270. But as I said before,

  271. repentance does not cease

  272. when we are saved.

  273. Beloved,

  274. the truth still works in us

  275. to drive us to repentance.

  276. The Christian life

  277. is a life of repentance.

  278. We continue to repent

  279. because we continue to sin.

  280. Someone thinks they've ceased sinning.

  281. They're a liar.

  282. They need to repent of that.

  283. The front of your bulletin,

  284. Spurgeon quote,

  285. the true penitent

  286. repents of sin against God,

  287. and he would do so

  288. even if there were no punishment.

  289. When he is forgiven,

  290. he repents of sin

  291. more than ever,

  292. for he sees more clearly than ever

  293. the wickedness of offending

  294. so gracious of God.

  295. The idea he's presenting to us there

  296. is that those of us

  297. who have repented once,

  298. who have believed in Christ,

  299. and have seen God's gracious work

  300. in our lives,

  301. repent all the more

  302. because we pursue holiness,

  303. because we cast off sin,

  304. but we pursue holiness

  305. as a grateful response

  306. to what he's done for us.

  307. The Christian life

  308. is also a life

  309. of bringing about repentance

  310. in others

  311. by the proclamation

  312. of that same truth.

  313. Peter is doing so here.

  314. He's been using the Scripture,

  315. although he hasn't directly cited it,

  316. but all of these names

  317. of Christ,

  318. all of these names

  319. that are given to Jesus

  320. draw his listeners' minds

  321. to the text,

  322. constantly drawing them back

  323. to the Scripture

  324. that they had in that day.

  325. Paul says in Romans 1.16,

  326. For I am not ashamed

  327. of the Gospel,

  328. for it is the power of God

  329. for salvation

  330. to everyone who believes,

  331. to the Jew first,

  332. and also to the Greek.

  333. Right?

  334. I'm not ashamed

  335. of the preached message,

  336. the truth of Christ.

  337. And we are to share that truth.

  338. Whatever may come,

  339. Jesus suffered and died

  340. to bring about repentance.

  341. Maybe one of the great problems

  342. with the church

  343. in America today

  344. is that we're afraid

  345. of what may come

  346. if we preach

  347. the truth.

  348. We don't want to suffer

  349. like Christ.

  350. I read a statistic this week

  351. that the average

  352. conversion ratio

  353. in Southern Baptist churches

  354. is 86 members

  355. to one baptism

  356. per year.

  357. This is the average.

  358. It's shameful.

  359. John 13.16,

  360. Jesus said,

  361. Truly, truly,

  362. I say to you,

  363. a servant is not greater

  364. than his master,

  365. nor is a messenger

  366. greater

  367. than the one

  368. who sent him.

  369. At the end

  370. of Peter's

  371. second sermon,

  372. you guys know

  373. what happens

  374. to these two?

  375. Peter and John

  376. arrested

  377. and put in jail

  378. overnight.

  379. Last Monday evening,

  380. I was helping the boys

  381. get ready for bed.

  382. They were in their room

  383. and I'm down on my knees

  384. helping Judah

  385. get his pajama pants on.

  386. And Judah says,

  387. and it was so precious

  388. when he said it

  389. until I realized

  390. what he meant,

  391. Dad,

  392. I want to be like Jesus.

  393. My heart began to melt.

  394. And then he said,

  395. I want to be able

  396. to walk on water.

  397. Okay.

  398. Okay,

  399. so Judah's my,

  400. if you don't know,

  401. Judah's my

  402. just-turned-four-year-old.

  403. Kate is my

  404. almost-six-year-old

  405. going on 15.

  406. And he says,

  407. no, Judah,

  408. you don't want

  409. to be like Jesus.

  410. Jesus was nailed

  411. to a cross

  412. for our sins.

  413. to which Judah

  414. kind of pensively

  415. looked off

  416. into the corner

  417. of the room

  418. and he said,

  419. I kind of want

  420. to be like Jesus.

  421. And then he said,

  422. I want to walk

  423. on water.

  424. And the whole thing

  425. was so precious

  426. and cute

  427. and enjoyable

  428. in the moment.

  429. but then I

  430. very quickly realized

  431. how often

  432. I act that way.

  433. I kind of,

  434. I kind of want

  435. to be like Jesus.

  436. I kind of want

  437. the benefit

  438. and the blessing

  439. of being like Jesus

  440. apart from the suffering.

  441. Beloved,

  442. the benefit

  443. and the blessing

  444. does not come

  445. without the suffering.

  446. those who want

  447. to live godly

  448. in Christ Jesus

  449. will be persecuted.

  450. A second prompter

  451. for repentance

  452. is sorrow

  453. for sin.

  454. Sorrow for sin.

  455. God brings about

  456. and uses sorrow

  457. for sin

  458. to lead people

  459. to repentance.

  460. Listen to this.

  461. Paul writing

  462. 2 Corinthians 7

    2 Corinthians 7:9

  463. verses 9 and 10

  464. as it is,

  465. I rejoice

  466. not because you

  467. were grieved

  468. or sorrowful,

  469. but because

  470. you were grieved

  471. into repenting.

  472. For you felt

  473. a godly grief,

  474. that is a

  475. God-given grief,

  476. so that you

  477. suffered no loss

  478. through us.

  479. For godly grief

  480. produces a repentance

  481. that leads

  482. to salvation

  483. without regret.

  484. Whereas

  485. worldly grief

  486. grief

  487. produces

  488. death.

  489. So the sea

  490. is drawing

  491. a difference

  492. here for us.

  493. There's a godly grief

  494. that leads

  495. to repentance.

  496. That's the kind

  497. of sorrow

  498. we want to

  499. experience

  500. for our sin.

  501. Whereas

  502. there's a

  503. worldly grief

  504. that produces

  505. death.

  506. It just

  507. keeps up for us

  508. guilt

  509. and it's never

  510. solved.

  511. And we have

  512. to be very

  513. careful,

  514. friends,

  515. that we don't

  516. equate sorrow

  517. with repentance.

  518. That you merely

  519. feel bad

  520. about your sin

  521. and you assume

  522. that that is

  523. repentance.

  524. Godly sorrow

  525. produces

  526. repentance.

  527. Godly sorrow

  528. drives you

  529. to your knees

  530. at the cross

  531. of Jesus Christ.

  532. Godly sorrow

  533. that produces

  534. godly repentance

  535. turns us

  536. away

  537. from our

  538. sin.

  539. Have you

  540. ever been

  541. grieved by

  542. your sin

  543. only to

  544. quickly commit

  545. the same

  546. sin again?

  547. In quick

  548. succession,

  549. the same

  550. thing over

  551. and over

  552. and over

  553. and over

  554. again?

  555. Then you

  556. didn't repent

  557. of it to

  558. begin with.

  559. You didn't

  560. turn away

  561. from it

  562. and turn

  563. to God.

  564. Now,

  565. I'm not

  566. suggesting that

  567. we have a

  568. huge list

  569. of all

  570. possible sins

  571. and we

  572. commit a

  573. sin and

  574. we repent

  575. of it

  576. and we

  577. check it

  578. off because

  579. we're never

  580. going to

  581. commit that

  582. one again.

  583. Things come

  584. up and cycle

  585. through our

  586. lives to be

  587. sure.

  588. But I

  589. watch so

  590. many people

  591. just so

  592. broken over

  593. their sin

  594. only to

  595. turn and

  596. do it

  597. again.

  598. Almost

  599. immediately

  600. to do

  601. it

  602. again.

  603. Many of

  604. you don't

  605. repent

  606. well

  607. or don't

  608. repent

  609. at all.

  610. sorrow for

  611. sin

  612. brings us

  613. to

  614. repentance.

  615. We have

  616. this weight

  617. that's placed

  618. upon us.

  619. If you

  620. properly

  621. understand

  622. your sin,

  623. this guilt

  624. that you

  625. bear.

  626. What does

  627. Peter say in

  628. the last part

  629. of verse

  630. 19?

  631. Repent,

  632. turn back,

  633. that your

  634. sins may

  635. be blotted

  636. out,

  637. that they

  638. may be

  639. erased.

  640. It's the

  641. first result

  642. and we'll

  643. discuss more

  644. of that

  645. momentarily.

  646. The third

  647. prompter is

  648. God's

  649. goodness.

  650. God's

  651. goodness is

  652. designed to

  653. lead people

  654. to repentance.

  655. I think

  656. that's caught

  657. up in that

  658. therefore of

  659. verse 19,

  660. repent

  661. therefore.

  662. Why should

  663. they repent?

  664. Because God

  665. is good and

  666. he offers to

  667. all people the

  668. opportunity

  669. to repent.

  670. You remember

  671. what Peter

  672. said in

  673. verse 17?

  674. And now

  675. brothers,

  676. I know

  677. after this

  678. great indictment,

  679. he said,

  680. I know

  681. that you

  682. acted in

  683. ignorance as

  684. did also

  685. your rulers.

  686. And in

  687. saying that

  688. he's not

  689. absolving

  690. them of

  691. their

  692. responsibility.

  693. Otherwise,

  694. he'd have

  695. no reason

  696. in verse

  697. 19 to

  698. call them

  699. to repent.

  700. He's not

  701. saying you

  702. were ignorant.

  703. Oh,

  704. well,

  705. he's just

  706. saying you

  707. acted

  708. foolishly.

  709. You wouldn't

  710. have done

  711. the thing

  712. that you

  713. did.

  714. If you

  715. had

  716. known

  717. who

  718. Jesus

  719. is,

  720. he's

  721. offering

  722. them

  723. the

  724. possibility

  725. of

  726. forgiveness.

  727. Correct

  728. your

  729. understanding

  730. about

  731. who

  732. Jesus

  733. is.

  734. Ask

  735. for

  736. forgiveness.

  737. Repent

  738. of putting

  739. the author

  740. of life

  741. to death.

  742. Paul

  743. Paul

  744. rebukes

  745. Israel

  746. for

  747. missing

  748. this

  749. point

  750. in

  751. Romans

  752. 2

  753. 4

  754. says,

  755. Or do

  756. you

  757. presume

  758. on the

  759. riches

  760. of his

  761. kindness

  762. and

  763. forbearance

  764. and patience

  765. not knowing

  766. that God's

  767. kindness

  768. is meant

  769. to lead

  770. you

  771. to

  772. repentance?

  773. We need

  774. to be

  775. very aware

  776. of our

  777. sin.

  778. We need

  779. to help

  780. others

  781. become

  782. very aware

  783. of their

  784. sin.

  785. And at

  786. the same

  787. time,

  788. we need

  789. to remember

  790. the goodness

  791. of God

  792. to us

  793. in Christ.

  794. Fourthly,

  795. fourth

  796. prompter,

  797. final

  798. judgment.

  799. The

  800. promise

  801. of final

  802. judgment

  803. should

  804. lead

  805. people

  806. to

  807. repentance.

  808. If the

  809. other

  810. prompters

  811. have yet

  812. to work,

  813. then the

  814. promise

  815. of eternal

  816. destruction

  817. needs

  818. to speak

  819. to you.

  820. There's

  821. a real

  822. place

  823. called

  824. hell,

  825. and it

  826. will be

  827. horrible.

  828. Verse

  829. 22 and

  830. 23,

  831. Moses said,

  832. The Lord

  833. God will

  834. raise up

  835. for you

  836. a prophet

  837. like me

  838. from your

  839. brothers.

  840. You

  841. shall

  842. listen to

  843. him

  844. in whatever

  845. he tells

  846. you,

  847. and it

  848. shall be

  849. that every

  850. soul

  851. who does

  852. not listen

  853. to Christ

  854. shall be

  855. destroyed

  856. from the

  857. people.

  858. Will die

  859. forever.

  860. Jesus

  861. will return

  862. and he

  863. will judge

  864. with

  865. finality

  866. and we

  867. need to

  868. preach

  869. about it.

  870. It's not

  871. a popular

  872. thing to

  873. preach about

  874. these days.

  875. We must

  876. warn people

  877. of the

  878. impending

  879. danger.

  880. It's

  881. coming.

  882. It's

  883. sure

  884. that it

  885. will be

  886. here.

  887. There's

  888. a promise

  889. of final

  890. judgment.

  891. People

  892. need to be

  893. aware of

  894. it in

  895. order to

  896. flee from

  897. it to

  898. Christ

  899. for their

  900. salvation.

  901. I

  902. previously

  903. read to

  904. you

  905. Acts

  906. 17

  907. 30.

  908. Paul's

  909. preaching

  910. the times

  911. of ignorance

  912. God

  913. overlooked,

  914. but now

  915. he commands

  916. all people

  917. everywhere

  918. to

  919. repent.

  920. Hear what

  921. Paul goes

  922. on to say

  923. in verse

  924. 31,

  925. because God

  926. has fixed

  927. a day on

  928. which he

  929. will judge

  930. the world

  931. in righteousness

  932. by a man

  933. whom he

  934. has appointed

  935. and of

  936. this he

  937. has given

  938. assurance to

  939. all by

  940. raising him

  941. from the

  942. dead.

  943. God's

  944. overlooked

  945. times of

  946. ignorance.

  947. He's

  948. freely

  949. offering

  950. repentance.

  951. He's

  952. commanding

  953. it that we

  954. would repent

  955. because

  956. judgment

  957. is coming.

  958. It's coming

  959. in Christ.

  960. Christ will

  961. be the

  962. righteous

  963. judge and

  964. he's given

  965. his assurance

  966. of this

  967. by raising

  968. him

  969. from the

  970. dead.

  971. The day

  972. will come

  973. when repentance

  974. will no longer

  975. be an option.

  976. Repent.

  977. Repent.

  978. So those

  979. are at least

  980. four prompters

  981. that God

  982. uses to bring

  983. about repentance

  984. in his people.

  985. Next,

  986. four results

  987. of repentance.

  988. I'm going to

  989. speed up,

  990. so if you're

  991. taking notes,

  992. try to keep

  993. with me.

  994. Number one,

  995. sins

  996. erased.

  997. Still looking

  998. at verse

  999. 19,

  1000. that your

  1001. sins may

  1002. be blotted

  1003. out,

  1004. blotted

  1005. out,

  1006. erased.

  1007. There is

  1008. no longer

  1009. a record

  1010. of the

  1011. wrong you

  1012. committed

  1013. against

  1014. God.

  1015. It's been

  1016. stricken

  1017. from the

  1018. record.

  1019. Godly

  1020. repentance

  1021. accomplishes

  1022. this.

  1023. The book

  1024. of Revelation

  1025. speaks of

  1026. the wrath

  1027. of God

  1028. being stored

  1029. up for

  1030. those who

  1031. don't place

  1032. believing

  1033. faith in

  1034. him and

  1035. that all

  1036. of the

  1037. wrong

  1038. things,

  1039. all of

  1040. the sins

  1041. that they

  1042. have committed

  1043. have been

  1044. recorded in

  1045. books.

  1046. But not

  1047. us,

  1048. beloved.

  1049. If we've

  1050. placed faith

  1051. in Christ,

  1052. it's been

  1053. erased.

  1054. Those things

  1055. have been

  1056. taken out

  1057. of those

  1058. books.

  1059. We'll stand

  1060. before him

  1061. in the

  1062. righteousness

  1063. of Jesus,

  1064. whole and

  1065. perfect

  1066. before him.

  1067. it's a

  1068. precious

  1069. thing to

  1070. consider

  1071. that our

  1072. sins are

  1073. erased.

  1074. God says

  1075. in Isaiah

  1076. 43-25,

  1077. I am

  1078. he who

  1079. blots out

  1080. your

  1081. transgressions

  1082. for my

  1083. own sake

  1084. and I

  1085. will not

  1086. remember

  1087. your sins.

  1088. And later

  1089. in Isaiah

  1090. 44-22,

  1091. I have

  1092. blotted out

  1093. your

  1094. transgressions

  1095. like a

  1096. cloud and

  1097. your sins

  1098. like mist.

  1099. I take that

  1100. to mean

  1101. that it was

  1102. easy for

  1103. him to

  1104. do.

  1105. He was

  1106. able to

  1107. cast it

  1108. away,

  1109. return

  1110. to me

  1111. for I

  1112. have

  1113. redeemed

  1114. you.

  1115. In this

  1116. day,

  1117. the writing

  1118. was done

  1119. on papyrus.

  1120. Ink was

  1121. incredibly

  1122. fragile.

  1123. I'll

  1124. bear you

  1125. the boring

  1126. details of

  1127. that,

  1128. but it was

  1129. very easy

  1130. to wet

  1131. something

  1132. and wipe

  1133. out.

  1134. This idea

  1135. of things

  1136. being blotted

  1137. out is a

  1138. precious thing

  1139. for them

  1140. to understand.

  1141. Paul writes

  1142. in Colossians

    Colossians 2:13

  1143. chapter 2,

  1144. verse 13

  1145. and 14,

  1146. and you

  1147. who were

  1148. dead in

  1149. your

  1150. trespasses

  1151. and the

  1152. uncircumcision

  1153. of your

  1154. flesh,

  1155. God made

  1156. alive

  1157. together

  1158. with him,

  1159. having

  1160. forgiven

  1161. us all

  1162. our

  1163. trespasses

  1164. by

  1165. canceling

  1166. the record

  1167. of debt.

  1168. That same

  1169. language,

  1170. canceling,

  1171. blotting out

  1172. the record

  1173. of debt

  1174. that stood

  1175. against us

  1176. with its

  1177. legal demands.

  1178. This he

  1179. set aside,

  1180. nailing it

  1181. to the

  1182. cross.

  1183. Beloved,

  1184. it's this

  1185. result of

  1186. repentance,

  1187. true,

  1188. God-given

  1189. repentance,

  1190. that gives

  1191. us such

  1192. motivation

  1193. to repent

  1194. again,

  1195. to know

  1196. that we

  1197. are complete

  1198. in Christ,

  1199. that we

  1200. don't now

  1201. work for

  1202. perfection.

  1203. We have

  1204. Christ's

  1205. perfection.

  1206. Our

  1207. obedience

  1208. is a

  1209. response

  1210. to

  1211. that

  1212. perfection

  1213. granted

  1214. to us.

  1215. Some of you

  1216. just need to

  1217. let that

  1218. sink.

  1219. You're

  1220. forgiven

  1221. in Christ.

  1222. Stop

  1223. acting

  1224. like you're

  1225. not.

  1226. Stop

  1227. acting as

  1228. if he

  1229. needs to

  1230. get back

  1231. up on

  1232. the cross

  1233. and die

  1234. for today's

  1235. sins.

  1236. His work

  1237. was complete.

  1238. If you

  1239. believed in

  1240. him,

  1241. he already

  1242. bore

  1243. the wrath

  1244. of God

  1245. for anything

  1246. you have

  1247. done and

  1248. will ever

  1249. do.

  1250. It doesn't

  1251. become a

  1252. license for

  1253. us to

  1254. sin.

  1255. If you

  1256. think that's

  1257. the case,

  1258. oh, I'm

  1259. forgiven in

  1260. Christ,

  1261. then you're

  1262. not a

  1263. Christian.

  1264. You haven't

  1265. understood your

  1266. sin and the

  1267. great offense

  1268. that it is.

  1269. You haven't

  1270. really understood

  1271. and appreciated

  1272. the sacrifice

  1273. that he made

  1274. on your

  1275. behalf and

  1276. all of the

  1277. blessings that

  1278. he's poured

  1279. out on you.

  1280. If you

  1281. understand that,

  1282. you respond

  1283. in obedience.

  1284. Our failure

  1285. even to

  1286. respond in

  1287. obedience in

  1288. the day-to-day,

  1289. in the moment-by-moment

  1290. is because we

  1291. so readily

  1292. forget the

  1293. truth of

  1294. how good

  1295. God has

  1296. been to

  1297. us in

  1298. Christ.

  1299. We fail

  1300. to believe

  1301. that reality

  1302. and it's

  1303. out of that

  1304. that we're

  1305. responding in

  1306. our flesh.

  1307. And our

  1308. new self

  1309. has been

  1310. delivered,

  1311. has been

  1312. given

  1313. freedom from

  1314. our sin.

  1315. Paul writes

  1316. in Romans 8.1,

  1317. there's therefore

  1318. now no

  1319. condemnation

  1320. for those

  1321. who are in

  1322. Christ Jesus.

  1323. What a

  1324. precious result

  1325. of repentance.

  1326. Our sins

  1327. are blotted

  1328. out.

  1329. Secondly,

  1330. the coming

  1331. of the

  1332. kingdom

  1333. of God.

  1334. The coming

  1335. of the

  1336. kingdom

  1337. of God.

  1338. Peter says,

  1339. repent therefore

  1340. and turn

  1341. again,

  1342. verse 20,

  1343. that times

  1344. of refreshing

  1345. may come

  1346. from the

  1347. presence of

  1348. the Lord

  1349. and that

  1350. he may

  1351. send the

  1352. Christ

  1353. appointed

  1354. for you

  1355. Jesus

  1356. whom

  1357. heaven

  1358. must

  1359. receive

  1360. until

  1361. a time

  1362. for

  1363. restoring

  1364. all

  1365. the

  1366. things.

  1367. The

  1368. kingdom

  1369. of God

  1370. was

  1371. inaugurated

  1372. began

  1373. by the

  1374. life,

  1375. death,

  1376. resurrection

  1377. and ascension

  1378. of Jesus

  1379. Christ.

  1380. Christ

  1381. came to

  1382. earth

  1383. as a

  1384. baby,

  1385. took on

  1386. human

  1387. form.

  1388. The

  1389. kingdom

  1390. of God

  1391. was set

  1392. into

  1393. motion

  1394. here.

  1395. The

  1396. kingdom

  1397. of God

  1398. will be

  1399. consummated

  1400. by Jesus

  1401. Christ's

  1402. return.

  1403. There's

  1404. elements,

  1405. aspects of

  1406. the kingdom

  1407. that are

  1408. now and

  1409. aspects that

  1410. are not

  1411. yet.

  1412. We live

  1413. between

  1414. those

  1415. two

  1416. times.

  1417. And

  1418. with

  1419. this

  1420. text,

  1421. at this

  1422. point,

  1423. a great

  1424. eschatological

  1425. debate,

  1426. eschatology

  1427. is a

  1428. study of

  1429. end times,

  1430. could

  1431. ensue.

  1432. But I'm

  1433. just going

  1434. to avoid

  1435. it this

  1436. morning for

  1437. two reasons.

  1438. Many

  1439. suggest that

  1440. here,

  1441. Peter's

  1442. specifically

  1443. referring to

  1444. the

  1445. millennial

  1446. reign of

  1447. Christ.

  1448. I'm not

  1449. exactly sure

  1450. what to

  1451. think of

  1452. the meaning

  1453. of verses

  1454. 20 to

  1455. 21,

  1456. and I

  1457. also haven't

  1458. quite settled

  1459. in on my

  1460. eschatological

  1461. view.

  1462. When is

  1463. the

  1464. millennial

  1465. reign of

  1466. Christ?

  1467. I think

  1468. it's now.

  1469. Many in

  1470. our vein

  1471. of

  1472. Christianity

  1473. think it's

  1474. not happened

  1475. yet.

  1476. It's a

  1477. thing that

  1478. will come.

  1479. But I'm

  1480. not positive.

  1481. I've poured

  1482. the concrete

  1483. and I'm

  1484. standing in

  1485. it, but

  1486. it just

  1487. hasn't set

  1488. up yet.

  1489. I can

  1490. always jump

  1491. back out

  1492. of it

  1493. again.

  1494. I'm not

  1495. standing

  1496. firm as

  1497. an

  1498. amillennialist.

  1499. I'm just

  1500. not exactly

  1501. sure.

  1502. And

  1503. secondly,

  1504. I don't

  1505. really think

  1506. it's the

  1507. pressing

  1508. matter of

  1509. the text.

  1510. I think

  1511. it's the

  1512. main point.

  1513. I don't

  1514. think it's

  1515. really what

  1516. Peter is

  1517. trying to

  1518. drive at.

  1519. And I

  1520. could be

  1521. wrong,

  1522. depending on

  1523. your

  1524. eschatological

  1525. view.

  1526. You just

  1527. have to

  1528. forgive me

  1529. for that.

  1530. What I am

  1531. sure of,

  1532. what I'm

  1533. confident of,

  1534. is that there

  1535. are present

  1536. day implications

  1537. of the

  1538. kingdom.

  1539. I'm positive

  1540. with that.

  1541. There's a

  1542. now element

  1543. to the

  1544. kingdom of

  1545. God.

  1546. And we

  1547. can be

  1548. sure that

  1549. Peter is

  1550. saying that

  1551. we should

  1552. repent so

  1553. that refreshing

  1554. will come.

  1555. The burden

  1556. of your

  1557. sin will be

  1558. lifted from

  1559. your back.

  1560. I know that

  1561. many people in

  1562. here like to

  1563. go backpacking

  1564. and probably

  1565. in your first

  1566. time out

  1567. backpacking,

  1568. you packed

  1569. way too

  1570. much.

  1571. I know my

  1572. first backpack

  1573. was much,

  1574. much larger

  1575. than it needed

  1576. to be and so

  1577. I filled it.

  1578. Why not?

  1579. You could

  1580. take as

  1581. much as

  1582. you wanted

  1583. to with

  1584. you.

  1585. Do you

  1586. remember those

  1587. times when

  1588. you get

  1589. into camp

  1590. for the

  1591. evening and

  1592. you've been

  1593. sludging along

  1594. all day and

  1595. you drop that

  1596. 40, 50, 60

  1597. pounds off of

  1598. your back and

  1599. you've been

  1600. going hard all

  1601. day and you

  1602. feel like you

  1603. can fly?

  1604. You drop that

  1605. weight off?

  1606. Just the

  1607. relief that

  1608. that is?

  1609. My mind

  1610. goes to the

  1611. story of

  1612. Pilgrim

  1613. Christian and

  1614. Pilgrim's

  1615. Progress.

  1616. You've not

  1617. read that.

  1618. You need to

  1619. read it.

  1620. He's got this

  1621. burden that's

  1622. been lashed on

  1623. his back and

  1624. that's the

  1625. weight of

  1626. his sin.

  1627. He comes to

  1628. the cross and

  1629. it falls away,

  1630. falls off his

  1631. back and he's

  1632. so joyous.

  1633. There's a

  1634. refreshing that

  1635. comes by having

  1636. the burden of

  1637. our sins lifted

  1638. from us in

  1639. repentance.

  1640. Repent so that

  1641. you have the

  1642. presence of the

  1643. Lord with you.

  1644. Repent that

  1645. one day you

  1646. will have Christ

  1647. in full measure

  1648. at his return.

  1649. These are

  1650. real things

  1651. and present

  1652. things and

  1653. future things

  1654. that drive us

  1655. to repentance.

  1656. It's a result

  1657. of our

  1658. repentance.

  1659. Third,

  1660. result of

  1661. repentance,

  1662. deliverance

  1663. from destruction.

  1664. Deliverance from

  1665. destruction.

  1666. We have the

  1667. promise of

  1668. final judgment

  1669. drives us to

  1670. repentance.

  1671. prophets.

  1672. We're delivered

  1673. from that

  1674. final judgment

  1675. and the

  1676. destruction that

  1677. follows.

  1678. Peter begins to

  1679. use the Old

  1680. Testament prophets

  1681. to speak to

  1682. the minds of

  1683. his Jewish

  1684. audience.

  1685. We had got to

  1686. do a little

  1687. studying at this

  1688. point, but they

  1689. had it.

  1690. It was readily

  1691. running around

  1692. inside their

  1693. minds.

  1694. The last part of

  1695. verse 21,

  1696. about which God

  1697. spoke by the

  1698. mouth of his

  1699. holy prophets

  1700. long ago.

  1701. And he starts

  1702. by using their

  1703. very earliest

  1704. and most

  1705. revered prophet

  1706. to do so.

  1707. Verses 22

  1708. and 23.

  1709. Moses said,

  1710. The Lord God

  1711. will raise up

  1712. for you a

  1713. prophet like

  1714. me from your

  1715. brothers.

  1716. You shall

  1717. listen to him

  1718. in whatever he

  1719. tells you.

  1720. And it shall

  1721. be that every

  1722. soul who does

  1723. not listen to

  1724. that prophet

  1725. shall be

  1726. destroyed from

  1727. the people.

  1728. Peter quotes

  1729. Moses from

  1730. Deuteronomy

  1731. 1815 and

  1732. 1819 here.

  1733. And it's

  1734. phrased,

  1735. A prophet

  1736. like me,

  1737. God will

  1738. raise up

  1739. for you a

  1740. prophet like

  1741. me,

  1742. was understood

  1743. in this time

  1744. by the Jews,

  1745. rightly so,

  1746. to be the

  1747. Messiah.

  1748. They knew

  1749. exactly who

  1750. Peter was

  1751. talking about

  1752. when he

  1753. quotes Moses

  1754. from Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  1755. chapter 18.

  1756. This one that

  1757. you killed is

  1758. the one that

  1759. Moses was

  1760. speaking about.

  1761. If you don't

  1762. listen to him,

  1763. if you don't

  1764. repent,

  1765. then destruction

  1766. is certainly

  1767. yours.

  1768. But if you

  1769. do,

  1770. if you do

  1771. call or

  1772. respond to

  1773. the call

  1774. of repentance,

  1775. you'll be

  1776. delivered from

  1777. that destruction.

  1778. And then

  1779. lastly,

  1780. blessing will

  1781. be realized.

  1782. Verses 24

  1783. to 26.

  1784. And all the

  1785. prophets,

  1786. the rest of

  1787. them,

  1788. all the rest

  1789. of the

  1790. prophets from

  1791. Samuel,

  1792. the prophet

  1793. who followed

  1794. Moses and

  1795. those who

  1796. came after

  1797. him,

  1798. all of them

  1799. also proclaimed

  1800. these days.

  1801. you are the

  1802. sons of

  1803. the prophet

  1804. and of

  1805. the covenant

  1806. that God

  1807. made with

  1808. your fathers

  1809. saying to

  1810. Abraham,

  1811. and in

  1812. your offspring

  1813. shall all

  1814. the families

  1815. of the earth

  1816. be blessed.

  1817. God,

  1818. having raised

  1819. up his

  1820. servant,

  1821. sent him

  1822. to you

  1823. first to

  1824. bless you

  1825. by turning

  1826. every one

  1827. of you

  1828. from your

  1829. wickedness.

  1830. I believe

  1831. what he's

  1832. saying is

  1833. that the

  1834. gospel has

  1835. come first

  1836. to the

  1837. Jews in

  1838. order that

  1839. the Jews

  1840. and their

  1841. believing

  1842. and their

  1843. going to

  1844. the ends

  1845. of the

  1846. earth

  1847. will carry

  1848. the gospel

  1849. forth.

  1850. The fulfillment

  1851. of this

  1852. promise to

  1853. Abraham

  1854. and in

  1855. your offspring

  1856. shall all

  1857. the families

  1858. of the

  1859. earth

  1860. be blessed.

  1861. We know

  1862. that that's

  1863. fulfilled

  1864. in Christ.

  1865. We have

  1866. in Luke

    Luke 24:45–47

  1867. chapter 24

  1868. verses 45

  1869. to 47

  1870. a record

  1871. of Jesus

  1872. amongst the

  1873. disciples

  1874. after his

  1875. resurrection.

  1876. He says,

  1877. it's recorded

  1878. this way,

  1879. then he opened

  1880. their minds

  1881. to understand

  1882. the scriptures

  1883. and said

  1884. to them,

  1885. thus it is

  1886. written that

  1887. the Christ

  1888. should suffer

  1889. and on the

  1890. third day

  1891. rise from

  1892. the dead

  1893. and that

  1894. repentance

  1895. and forgiveness

  1896. of sins

  1897. should be

  1898. proclaimed

  1899. in his

  1900. name

  1901. to all

  1902. nations

  1903. beginning

  1904. from Jerusalem.

  1905. And that's

  1906. what we see

  1907. happening here.

  1908. This blessing

  1909. being realized

  1910. in the formation

  1911. of the early

  1912. church.

  1913. The blessing

  1914. is realized

  1915. in Jerusalem

  1916. first.

  1917. In chapter 4

  1918. verse 4

  1919. we see that

  1920. 5,000 men

  1921. believe,

  1922. respond to

  1923. the gospel

  1924. call of

  1925. Peter.

  1926. It's presumed

  1927. when it's

  1928. recorded that

  1929. it's 5,000

  1930. men,

  1931. that there are

  1932. also women

  1933. and children

  1934. present who

  1935. also believe.

  1936. So a massive

  1937. number of

  1938. people respond

  1939. in faith to

  1940. Peter's second

  1941. sermon.

  1942. And very

  1943. soon the

  1944. expansive work

  1945. of the gospel

  1946. will begin.

  1947. Persecution

  1948. comes and they

  1949. are scattered.

  1950. Right?

  1951. Within a

  1952. generation we

  1953. see the gospel

  1954. on three

  1955. continents.

  1956. We're a

  1957. result of

  1958. that.

  1959. Everything

  1960. that's happening

  1961. here and

  1962. the gospel

  1963. beginning to

  1964. go forth and

  1965. the fulfillment

  1966. of these

  1967. promises begin

  1968. with the

  1969. repentance of

  1970. these people.

  1971. Coming to

  1972. faith and

  1973. launching out

  1974. the purposes

  1975. of God

  1976. in the world.

  1977. We live in

  1978. this day and

  1979. we're still

  1980. meant to be

  1981. about bringing

  1982. this about.

  1983. The repentance

  1984. of forgiveness

  1985. of sin should

  1986. be proclaimed

  1987. in His name

  1988. to all

  1989. nations.

  1990. It's where

  1991. we find

  1992. ourselves

  1993. today.

  1994. So in

  1995. Peter's second

  1996. sermon we

  1997. see Him

  1998. as we

  1999. should

  2000. exalt

  2001. Christ.

  2002. Indite

  2003. His

  2004. listeners

  2005. and call

  2006. His

  2007. listeners

  2008. to repent.

  2009. And so

  2010. what do we

  2011. do with

  2012. that?

  2013. It's just

  2014. for the joy

  2015. of sitting

  2016. here for

  2017. 45 minutes

  2018. to an hour

  2019. and listening

  2020. to me

  2021. ramble on

  2022. about a

  2023. text.

  2024. Is that

  2025. what the

  2026. point of

  2027. today was?

  2028. I hope

  2029. not.

  2030. For you,

  2031. what do you

  2032. leave here

  2033. and do

  2034. with the

  2035. preaching of

  2036. God's

  2037. Word?

  2038. Number one,

  2039. repent.

  2040. If you

  2041. never have,

  2042. do so

  2043. today.

  2044. Listen to

  2045. those

  2046. prompters

  2047. leading you

  2048. to the

  2049. goodness of

  2050. God to

  2051. you in

  2052. Christ.

  2053. Turn from

  2054. your sin

  2055. and turn

  2056. to Him.

  2057. If you

  2058. are found

  2059. in Christ,

  2060. if you

  2061. have

  2062. initially

  2063. repented,

  2064. consider

  2065. how else

  2066. you need

  2067. to repent.

  2068. Truly,

  2069. godly

  2070. repentance,

  2071. turning away

  2072. from sin,

  2073. pursuing

  2074. righteousness.

  2075. And secondly,

  2076. and maybe

  2077. primarily

  2078. be repentant

  2079. about this,

  2080. be about

  2081. the work

  2082. of seeing

  2083. others

  2084. repent.

  2085. We've been

  2086. commissioned

  2087. to carry

  2088. the goodness

  2089. of Jesus

  2090. Christ to

  2091. those who

  2092. are suffering

  2093. and dying

  2094. around us.

  2095. We should

  2096. go to the

  2097. ends of

  2098. the earth,

  2099. but we

  2100. don't have

  2101. to to

  2102. preach the

  2103. gospel.

  2104. Countless

  2105. people

  2106. around us

  2107. that need

  2108. the good

  2109. news of

  2110. Jesus Christ,

  2111. that need

  2112. to repent.

  2113. Let's pray

  2114. together.

  2115. Let's pray

  2116. together.

  2117. Let's pray

  2118. together.

  2119. Let's pray
