  1. All right, very good. Please take your copy of God's Word out and turn to the book of Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today will be Acts chapter 4, verses 14 through 22.

    Acts 4:14–22

  3. But before we read the text and get into it, I'd like to begin by reminding you where we are in our text and what we have considered together in the past weeks.

  4. If you have been here, if you have not been here, I hope this will serve you well by catching you up to where we are in our text as well.

  5. Beginning three weeks ago on Easter Sunday, we started into chapter 3 and we saw the healing of a lame beggar.

  6. This figure at the temple that sat always at the beautiful gate and Peter and John going up at the hour of prayer.

  7. It must be three o'clock in the afternoon to pray, encounter this man, and he's miraculously healed.

  8. And in so doing, God orchestrates the setting of a stage for Peter's second sermon.

  9. So we look also at the beginning of Peter's second sermon in which he exalts Jesus as the Christ by speaking of him with five different titles.

  10. And those titles are, and you can look there at the beginning of chapter 3 and spot these, God's servant, Jesus, which means salvation comes from the Lord.

  11. Peter refers to him as the holy and righteous one, the author of life and the Christ, the Messiah, the anointed one.

  12. So he exalts Jesus Christ in his preaching.

  13. Secondly, he indicts his listeners, this crowd that has gathered because of the healing of this lame man.

  14. He indicts them.

  15. He points out their guilt, beginning in verse 13 of chapter 3 and then 14 and 15.

  16. See the phrases, you delivered, you denied, you killed.

  17. And he's addressing specifically their misconception about who Jesus is.

  18. The following week, we concluded our study of Peter's second sermon.

  19. So this is two weeks ago now.

  20. And we saw the conclusion of his outline.

  21. So first, he exalts Jesus Christ.

  22. Second, he indicts his listeners.

  23. And third, he calls his listeners to repentance.

  24. Verse 19 of chapter 3, repent, therefore, and turn again.

  25. And he speaks of the restoration that accompanies repentance.

  26. If you are a disciple of Christ, then you are commanded, not merely suggested, but you are commanded to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  27. None of us are outside of this.

  28. This isn't just a sermon to observe for pastors only.

  29. But all of us as disciples of Christ are commanded to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  30. And we should follow this very same outline with some consideration to our particular listeners and those listeners' particular context.

  31. For example, the gospel, if we're to present it in its entirety, and I'm saying this to you because I think many people believe they're presenting the gospel to their friends and their co-workers.

  32. But what they're really doing is they're having a spiritual conversation.

  33. They're not actually presenting the gospel.

  34. They're not giving all of the information necessary for someone to come to believing faith in Christ.

  35. And in its simplest form, and there's much to be said about this, needs to be God, man, Christ, repentance.

  36. You heard me say to the kids this morning, ask your parents about God and ask your parents about yourself.

  37. That conversation rightly leads us to speaking of Christ.

  38. And as these little ones grow older, they need to be called to repent.

  39. Well, that's what Peter's doing here.

  40. He's using that format, God, man, Christ, repentance.

  41. But he's being sensitive to the listener's context.

  42. This is a Jewish audience.

  43. They believed in the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God that had created the world.

  44. They believed that He was holy and that He had a holy standard for them to live by.

  45. They were aware of the law and they were also aware of their transgression of that law.

  46. They knew that they needed a sacrifice for that.

  47. And so Peter's able to come in the midst of that understanding of God and man and speak of Christ and then call them to repentance.

  48. So being sensitive to that, you can see God, man, Christ, repentance, even in his outline.

  49. And as he exalts Jesus, indicts the listeners, calls them guilty and calls them to repentance.

  50. Now, last week, we began to study chapter 4, verses 1 through 31.

  51. So it's kind of our larger, broader text over these past two weeks and now into next week as well.

  52. And in that, at the beginning of it, we observe the arrest of Peter and John as a result of their preaching,

  53. their overnight imprisonment, and the beginning of their trial before the Sanhedrin.

  54. In verses 8 through 12 of chapter 4, we read and considered Peter's third sermon where he follows the exact same outline.

  55. So this is number three, one on the day of Pentecost, second following the healing of the lame man,

  56. and now the next day, his third sermon as recorded in the book of Acts.

  57. Again, exaltation of Jesus Christ, the indictment of his listeners, now the Sanhedrin, the religious rulers, the court of Israel,

  58. and then calling those listeners to repentance.

  59. And, last week, I spoke to you of the normalcy of Christian persecution.

  60. The normalcy of it.

  61. Christian persecution should not be a foreign concept to us.

  62. Christian persecution should not be a foreign concept to us.

  63. Persecution has been and still is the norm for the Christian church in the world.

  64. Always has been and still is.

  65. Broadly speaking, we looked at the statistics.

  66. More Christians are suffering for the sake of the gospel in the world right now than are not.

  67. But, the fact that this is not the case for the American church is not a factor of our political environment.

  68. It is not a factor of our political environment that we don't suffer in that way,

  69. that we're not persecuted because of the gospel.

  70. Let me show you a bit more what I mean.

  71. The persecution, hear this carefully,

  72. The persecution of the citizens of God's kingdom always accompanies the coming of God's kingdom.

  73. They're carried along together.

  74. It's not optional.

  75. Let this sink.

  76. 2 Timothy 3.12

  77. I read this to you last week.

  78. You need to hear these words and they need to resonate.

  79. They need to bounce around inside of your head.

  80. Paul, at the end of his life, he had suffered much.

  81. He had certainly been persecuted.

  82. He would be finally martyred not long after the writing of this second letter to Timothy 3.12.

  83. And he said,

  84. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  85. Stages book.

  86. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  87. All will be persecuted.

  88. Don't let American religious freedom numb you to this reality.

  89. Now, many places in the world and throughout history, what was experienced as persecution was persecution of the body.

  90. That's not a present reality where we live today.

  91. And I'm not suggesting that it should be.

  92. Please don't seek to go out and be beat up for your faith.

  93. It may happen.

  94. It's very possible.

  95. Certainly, we don't receive systematic persecution.

  96. Right.

  97. The state is not persecuting Christians, throwing us in prison for the preaching of the gospel.

  98. But there is and there should exist amongst us a persecution of the ego.

  99. If you preach the good news of Jesus Christ boldly, you might lose your reputation, your status, your position, your job.

  100. People might think that you're strange or narrow minded or judgmental.

  101. They might label you unloving.

  102. A difficult one for many of us.

  103. People may just not like you.

  104. I like to be liked by people, but they may not like me if I begin to exalt Christ and indict them for their sin against a holy God and call them to repentance.

  105. It's the ultimately loving thing I can do for them, but they may not appreciate it.

  106. So it's the it's the ego that has the potential of being assaulted here in the U.S.

  107. If we're to boldly declare the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  108. Some have suggested that the fear of persecution against the ego is a more stifling tool of the devil because it is not so clear an injustice as an assault against the body.

  109. So catch what I'm saying.

  110. I think I'm tracking with this idea that it's it's more stifling because an injustice against the body.

  111. So let's say a man rushed the stage right now because I'm declaring the good news of Jesus Christ in my preaching and just clocked me in the face.

  112. I believe I would tend to go, well, hey, suffering for righteousness sake.

  113. Right.

  114. How clear the injustice is on his part to attack me physically for simply declaring the truth as I understand it.

  115. But it seems that it's subliminally restrictive when I'm afraid that that guy just might not like me.

  116. He might cross his arms and walk out of here and never return.

  117. He might speak poorly of me in the community and I entertain this thought in the back of my head and it could.

  118. It has the potential to cause me to shrink back when I should push forward.

  119. I will say to you honestly, in the times that I have shrunk back, when I should have pressed forward, when I haven't been bold as I should have been.

  120. My concern was that I would get lumped in with other Christians.

  121. It seems to me often that Christians that make the popular media are crazy.

  122. And so often I go, that's not me.

  123. Like, oh, please don't associate me with that guy or that lady.

  124. I don't want to be associated with them.

  125. I don't want to be seen as weird like them.

  126. So I think I'm tracking on this idea that possibly this is the case.

  127. But all the same, persecution of one kind or another should be the normative experience of the Christian life.

  128. Should be normative, beloved.

  129. Should be coming together on Sunday, having experienced the hostility of the world throughout the week.

  130. That's why this should be such a refreshing time to be together because we look around at each other and we go, we're not crazy.

  131. Everyone in this room believes what I believe.

  132. And this is so charging.

  133. We sing songs about it.

  134. We hear the preaching of it.

  135. And we go back out into our week ready once again to bear reproach for the sake of the gospel.

  136. I'll give you just a quick example.

  137. And this is kind of off the wall, but I thought of it this morning while we were singing.

  138. So if you track with me.

  139. Normally, day to day, I normally wear a pair of like trail running shoes and a little bit of the soles coming off of one of them.

  140. It's a piece I can just glue back on really easily, but I just haven't done it yet.

  141. And it's been doing that for about two weeks.

  142. So it's a little flat.

  143. So you catch them.

  144. If you can catch it, it's coming from forward.

  145. So when I shuffle my foot on the ground, it catches and does a little like boop with my foot.

  146. Picturing that in your mind.

  147. So I started walking different.

  148. And this morning, I realized I'm not wearing those shoes, but I was also picking that foot up a little bit higher.

  149. As I walked, I was doing a little more like lifting, not shuffling my feet, as I often do.

  150. Because I had adjusted to a new norm.

  151. And the problem is that we have a culture in our churches where we don't boldly proclaim the gospel everywhere we go.

  152. And so therefore, we don't bear the reproach of Christ.

  153. And it's normative.

  154. It's normal that we don't do these things.

  155. Rather than it being abnormal that we don't do these things.

  156. That you come amongst a group of believers and you go, really?

  157. All of you this week suffering for the sake of the gospel?

  158. What's wrong with me?

  159. And we're silent about it.

  160. Right?

  161. We don't go, look what the scripture has to say about this.

  162. We very conveniently take 2 Timothy 3.12 and we go, well, maybe someday.

  163. Could possibly be a thing that would happen.

  164. We should be willing to do it.

  165. He gives us no space for that type of interpretation, beloved.

  166. If you don't like what I'm saying, your problem is with him.

  167. Paul, the spirit of God that inspired him to say, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  168. The kingdom of God comes about accompanied by persecution.

  169. And because it should be a reality, we begin to prepare for it.

  170. It is my hope.

  171. It is my prayer that we leave here today ready to go out and boldly proclaim the gospel and that you will be persecuted for that.

  172. I hope it would be wonderful if each and every one of you, every single person you encountered, was favorable to the message of the gospel.

  173. Already found in Christ or saying, tell me more.

  174. I've been waiting my whole life to meet a person that would preach this good news to me.

  175. But if you're propagating the gospel widely, I'm also confident that that will not be the case.

  176. Right?

  177. Will be persecuted.

  178. To some people, they will want to shut you down as quickly as they can.

  179. They don't want to hear it.

  180. So we began to consider in these first one through thirty one, seven ways to honor God in the midst of persecution.

  181. I promise I'm going to get to our text through this long introduction.

  182. Seven ways to honor God in the midst of persecution.

  183. Or if you prefer, seven ways to handle persecution.

  184. We looked at the first three last week.

  185. The first one was to be expendable.

  186. Right?

  187. And this is implied in the text.

  188. Look at verse four of chapter four.

  189. It's implied, but I believe it's there.

  190. I don't think I'm taking liberty with the text at all.

  191. Verse four.

  192. After their arrest, Luke records the arrest and imprisonment.

  193. But many of those who had heard the word believed.

  194. And the number of the men came to about five thousand.

  195. Right?

  196. I talked a little bit last week about the varying ways we could count the number of the church in that day.

  197. But it's a massive, massive number.

  198. Be expendable.

  199. Hold your life loosely for the sake of others.

  200. Don't be so concerned about the way people view you because they're dying.

  201. Be willing to be ridiculed for the sake of others.

  202. Consider this.

  203. If you're in Christ, it's possible that you picked up a copy of God's word and you read the scripture for yourself.

  204. You read the gospel in the scripture.

  205. But more likely, someone shared the gospel with you.

  206. Someone taught you the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  207. And by the inworking of the spirit and God's grace, you responded in faith.

  208. Someone was willing to bear the reproach of Christ for you.

  209. They were willing to do so.

  210. Fortunately, you responded favorably.

  211. You didn't take him out back and beat him up.

  212. But you were not likely the only person that that good news was preached to.

  213. The person that taught you the gospel was likely teaching other people the gospel as well.

  214. And that person probably met with opposition to the message of Christ.

  215. Someone was willing to bear reproach for you.

  216. Hold loosely to your life.

  217. Be expendable.

  218. Secondly, we looked at being filled with the spirit.

  219. We see that in verse 8, that Peter was filled with the spirit.

  220. And I certainly can't talk about this at length.

  221. Many Sundays.

  222. We ask that question, what does it mean to be filled with the spirit?

  223. And I've been saying to you and establishing for you that it is not this extra spiritual experience.

  224. It's not this second normative Christian experience where you reach a whole new plateau and plane.

  225. It's not a thing that's meant to be sought in the midst of a service by a certain set of incantations or meditation.

  226. It's not nearly that complex.

  227. If you're in Christ, you have been baptized in the spirit.

  228. One time thing.

  229. Being in Christ, you have the spirit of God.

  230. And you can be filled with him or not.

  231. It's a matter of walking in obedience or not.

  232. If you want to hear more about this, Acts 2, 1 through 12, the second sermon, you can find it online.

  233. I talk about it a bit more.

  234. But just quickly, in order for you to study this yourself, I want you to look in Ephesians 5, Colossians 3, Romans 8.

  235. Feel free to talk to me about it more as well.

  236. But be filled with the spirit.

  237. Have the word of God saturate you deeply.

  238. Ephesians 5, Colossians 3, these parallel passages.

  239. And have it come out of you.

  240. Have it so worked into you that it comes out of you.

  241. Romans 8.

  242. Set your mind on the things of the spirit and you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh.

  243. Thirdly, be bold.

  244. Be bold.

  245. What a great deal of boldness on Peter's part in front of these men.

  246. This is a big deal.

  247. Again, God orchestrating the miracle itself to bring them to being able to preach in front of this great crowd at the temple.

  248. And now the Sanhedrin.

  249. Now these religious elite, this ruling party, right?

  250. In cahoots with the Romans.

  251. And they're sitting in front of this group, 71, 70 men plus the high priest.

  252. No way they could have called this audience together on their own, right?

  253. This was a work of God.

  254. And here, Peter, the one we read this morning, denying Christ three times before his crucifixion.

  255. Now, having seen the resurrected Christ, is bold.

  256. Man, this was a group to stand in front of.

  257. It would have been frightening to be standing in front of these men.

  258. The closest equivalent I can draw to it is maybe a joint session of Congress and the Supreme Court.

  259. And then we'll just toss the president in the mix, all sitting in a big half circle asking you questions.

  260. Right?

  261. And you're meant to respond.

  262. And boy, does he respond with great boldness.

  263. Verse 11, this Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.

  264. And he's citing from Psalm 118, 22, which says the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

  265. Peter does not remove the offense of the gospel.

  266. In fear, he doesn't shrink back.

  267. He presses forward.

  268. He speaks the truth.

  269. He boldly indicts them.

  270. He's saying to them, you are fulfilling Psalm 118, 22.

  271. You, you're the builders.

  272. You've rejected the cornerstone on which the whole temple of God is built.

  273. He presses forward instead of shrinking back.

  274. He goes on to say, verse 12, there is salvation in no one else.

  275. Now, remember, these men are saying to him, they're concerned about the teaching of Jesus.

  276. These men were integral to the crucifixion of Christ.

  277. These men hated Jesus.

  278. And he says, there is salvation in no one else.

  279. For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

  280. If you don't hang all of your hope of salvation in the personal work of Jesus Christ, you will be destroyed.

  281. And opponents to this will say, how very narrow.

  282. Why couldn't God make many, many ways?

  283. But the question we should be asking is, why did God make a way at all?

  284. Praise God forevermore than he made a way.

  285. And he made a specific way.

  286. And it's in faith in the personal work of Jesus Christ.

  287. So those were last weeks.

  288. We're caught up now.

  289. This week, I'm just going to address one additional point from the seven.

  290. Because the structure of the text lends itself to that.

  291. And you've all been so very gracious.

  292. As I've been taking huge bites out of these narratives.

  293. And we have a members meeting following the service.

  294. So we're just going to add one.

  295. So in the seven ways to honor God in the midst of persecution,

  296. the one we'll add today is number four.

  297. Be obedient.

  298. Be obedient.

  299. Okay.

  300. My text for this morning is verse 14 to 22.

  301. But I would like to begin reading in verse one.

  302. So Acts four.

  303. One through 22.

  304. And as they were speaking to the people,

  305. the priest and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them

  306. greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people

  307. and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

  308. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day,

  309. for it was already evening.

  310. But many of those who had heard the word believed,

  311. and the number of the men came to about 5,000.

  312. On the next day,

  313. their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem

  314. with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander,

  315. all who were of the high priestly family.

  316. And when they had set them in the midst,

  317. they inquired,

  318. by what power or by what name do you do this?

  319. Then Peter,

  320. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  321. said to them,

  322. rulers of the people and elders,

  323. if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man,

  324. by what means this man has been healed?

  325. Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel

  326. that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  327. whom you crucified,

  328. whom God raised from the dead,

  329. by him this man is standing before you well.

  330. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you,

  331. the builders,

  332. which has become the cornerstone.

  333. And there is salvation in no one else,

  334. for there is no other name under heaven

  335. given among men by which we must be saved.

  336. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John

  337. and perceived that they were uneducated,

  338. common men,

  339. they were astonished,

  340. and they recognized they had been with Jesus.

  341. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them,

  342. they had nothing to say in opposition.

  343. But when they had commanded them to leave the council,

  344. they conferred with one another,

  345. saying,

  346. what shall we do with these men?

  347. For that a notable sign has been performed through them

  348. is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  349. and we cannot deny it.

  350. But in order that it may spread no further among the people,

  351. let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.

  352. So they called them and charged them not to speak

  353. or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

  354. But Peter and John answered them,

  355. whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you

  356. rather than to God,

  357. you must judge.

  358. For we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.

  359. And when they had further threatened them,

  360. they let them go,

  361. finding no way to punish them because of the people.

  362. For all were praising God for what had happened.

  363. For the man on whom the sign of healing was performed

  364. was more than forty years old.

  365. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  366. It was written for his glory and our good.

  367. And we would all do well to listen to it

  368. in order to believe its promises

  369. and obey its commands.

  370. All right, beginning in verse 14.

  371. Now, remembering that they're before the Sanhedrin,

  372. these 71 men,

  373. this highly intimidating situation.

  374. Recognize that's where they are

  375. and that it was customary

  376. to assess claims of miracles.

  377. If miracles occurred in this day,

  378. it was normative that the Sanhedrin

  379. would call together

  380. the people who were supposedly responsible for it

  381. and assess the claim of it.

  382. They knew that God was a miracle-working God.

  383. And if someone was to come and perform a miracle,

  384. it was possible

  385. that they were sent on behalf of God,

  386. that they were a prophet of God.

  387. This is likely the reason that the man was with them.

  388. You see that in verse 14.

  389. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them,

  390. he didn't wander his own way into this meeting.

  391. He was brought in

  392. and he was there with them to be assessed.

  393. But remember,

  394. this is not ultimately

  395. why Peter and John are on trial.

  396. So this is the normative thing that would be going on.

  397. Like, miracles have been performed.

  398. People are saying there's a miracle that's happened.

  399. And we need to get together.

  400. We need to gather everyone together.

  401. The Sanhedrin, we need to gather together.

  402. And we need to check this out

  403. to see if it's a true claim or not.

  404. And we know that's not the primary reason.

  405. Back in the beginning of chapter 4.

  406. Remember, they were annoyed.

  407. They were greatly annoyed with them.

  408. And they seized them.

  409. And they arrested them.

  410. They were annoyed with them for three reasons.

  411. They were teaching.

  412. It's not a thing that common men did.

  413. In verse 13, we saw that they were uneducated,

  414. common men.

  415. They weren't trained in their rabbinical schools.

  416. And they didn't have these clout

  417. of a professional theologian.

  418. They were amazed by Jesus as well

  419. when He came into synagogues

  420. and into the temple.

  421. And He spoke as one with authority.

  422. That's what they're referencing.

  423. One who had been granted authority to.

  424. Rather than just speaking what God had said

  425. in His Word.

  426. They were teaching.

  427. Second part of verse 2

  428. because they were teaching the people.

  429. They were teaching about Jesus.

  430. They were proclaiming in Jesus.

  431. This one that they had put to death.

  432. That they had deemed a false prophet

  433. and killed.

  434. And they were teaching about resurrection.

  435. The Sanhedrin was made up

  436. primarily,

  437. not in entirety,

  438. but primarily

  439. of Sadducees.

  440. And Sadducees were a sect of Judaism

  441. that did not believe

  442. in the resurrection from the dead.

  443. I didn't think that was a possible thing.

  444. So, they're teaching.

  445. They're teaching about Jesus.

  446. And they're teaching about resurrection.

  447. That Jesus Himself was raised

  448. from the dead.

  449. So, they're greatly annoyed with this.

  450. They're greatly annoyed.

  451. But they have nothing to say

  452. in opposition.

  453. Here's the man standing before them.

  454. We find out at the end of our text,

  455. verse 22,

  456. that this man had been crippled

  457. for 40 years.

  458. From birth for 40 years,

  459. he was a figure at the temple.

  460. Always was at the beautiful gate.

  461. They themselves would have seen them.

  462. So, here he is standing with them

  463. and they're seeing.

  464. They're saying,

  465. yes, that's the guy.

  466. And they've healed him.

  467. And they're saying to us

  468. that they healed him

  469. in the name of Jesus Christ.

  470. So, they have nothing to say.

  471. So, what do they do?

  472. They, in verse 15 and on into 16,

  473. they took a recess.

  474. They sent him out

  475. and took a recess.

  476. They conferred amongst each other

  477. to figure out what in the world

  478. they should do.

  479. Verse 16,

  480. What shall we do with these men?

  481. For that a notable sign

  482. has been performed through them

  483. is evident

  484. to all the inhabitants

  485. of Jerusalem.

  486. It's evident to everyone.

  487. Many thousands

  488. had witnessed the man healed.

  489. We see that there

  490. at the many who believed

  491. at the preaching of Peter.

  492. Many thousands

  493. had witnessed the man healed

  494. and the news of his healing

  495. had spread.

  496. All the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  497. the city was abuzz

  498. with this miracle.

  499. miracle.

  500. They couldn't deny it.

  501. There were too many witnesses.

  502. It's not that they didn't

  503. want to deny it.

  504. They would have gladly

  505. just dismissed it.

  506. They would have gladly

  507. just said,

  508. this didn't happen at all.

  509. This affirms the case

  510. against us.

  511. We could just deny it,

  512. but we can't.

  513. Because if we do,

  514. we'll lose power.

  515. Everyone will think

  516. we're crazy.

  517. The Sadducees also

  518. could not deny

  519. the resurrection.

  520. We're going to see this

  521. throughout the book of Acts

  522. when the apostles

  523. stand in these councils

  524. before the Sadducees.

  525. They would have loved

  526. to have denied

  527. the resurrection

  528. to present the proof

  529. that the resurrection

  530. had not happened.

  531. But they don't.

  532. They never do.

  533. They never bring it up

  534. because they couldn't.

  535. It was impossible

  536. for them to do so.

  537. This is a bit of a side note,

  538. but a commentary

  539. on this text

  540. by F.F. Bruce,

  541. who was a 20th century

  542. Scottish Bible scholar

  543. I commend to you.

  544. He wrote,

  545. it is particularly striking

  546. that neither on this

  547. nor on any other

  548. subsequent occasion

  549. did the Sanhedrin

  550. take any serious action

  551. to disprove

  552. the apostles'

  553. central affirmation,

  554. the resurrection

  555. of Jesus.

  556. Had it seemed possible

  557. to refute them

  558. on this point,

  559. how readily

  560. would the Sanhedrin

  561. have seized the opportunity?

  562. Had they succeeded,

  563. how quickly and completely

  564. the new movement

  565. would have collapsed?

  566. So they can't.

  567. They can't go after that.

  568. They're not even here

  569. able to go after

  570. the fact that a miracle

  571. had been performed.

  572. And Peter is saying

  573. it happened in the name

  574. of Christ.

  575. And so,

  576. what do they do?

  577. Verse 17

  578. into 18.

  579. But in order that it

  580. may spread

  581. no further

  582. among the people.

  583. Let's restrict it

  584. to Jerusalem,

  585. the city of Jerusalem.

  586. Let's squelch

  587. the rumor

  588. that someone

  589. was healed

  590. by the power

  591. of Christ.

  592. Let us warn them

  593. to speak no more

  594. to anyone

  595. in this name.

  596. So they did.

  597. They called them in,

  598. charged them not

  599. to speak or teach

  600. at all

  601. in the name

  602. of Jesus.

  603. These men

  604. were not concerned

  605. with the truth.

  606. What opportunity

  607. they had

  608. before them

  609. to witness

  610. their miracle

  611. working God

  612. performing a miracle

  613. in their midst.

  614. even being offered

  615. the opportunity

  616. to repent.

  617. Chapter 4,

  618. verse 12.

  619. To turn from their sin

  620. and turn back to God.

  621. But they were not

  622. concerned with the truth.

  623. They were concerned

  624. with their power

  625. and the holding of it.

  626. They were wealthy men

  627. because of the positions

  628. that they held.

  629. If the people

  630. were convinced

  631. that Jesus was the Messiah,

  632. the Sanhedrin

  633. would certainly

  634. have been held

  635. culpable

  636. for his death.

  637. He just wanted it

  638. dismissed,

  639. swept under

  640. the rug.

  641. The sooner the movement

  642. could die,

  643. the better for them.

  644. So they command them,

  645. don't speak anymore

  646. in this name.

  647. I think it's of

  648. interesting note

  649. at this point

  650. to see.

  651. We're going to see

  652. again in the book

  653. of Acts,

  654. again and again

  655. and again.

  656. The apostles

  657. had to be commanded

  658. to stop speaking

  659. of Jesus.

  660. Jesus.

  661. And today we have

  662. to command people

  663. to speak of Jesus.

  664. They were so enthralled

  665. with who he was

  666. to them.

  667. They loved him

  668. so immensely

  669. that they wouldn't

  670. shut up.

  671. At the threat

  672. of their life,

  673. they would not

  674. be quiet.

  675. And we see some

  676. of that in the

  677. response,

  678. verse 19 and 20.

  679. Peter and John

  680. answered them.

  681. So Peter's preached

  682. this sermon before,

  683. but now Peter

  684. and John,

  685. and I don't want

  686. you to picture this

  687. as like the creepy

  688. talking at the exact

  689. same time,

  690. but I think what Luke's

  691. trying to communicate

  692. is that they were

  693. unified in their

  694. obstinance.

  695. They were both

  696. equally bold.

  697. One of them spoke up,

  698. we're not sure which,

  699. likely Peter.

  700. Peter talked all the time.

  701. They said,

  702. whether it is right

  703. in the sight of God

  704. to listen to you

  705. rather than to God,

  706. you must judge.

  707. He's saying to them,

  708. you guys decide,

  709. should we listen to you

  710. or should we listen

  711. to God?

  712. I love what John

  713. MacArthur said of this

  714. position that he puts

  715. them in by saying this.

  716. He says,

  717. by such an appeal

  718. to the divine judge,

  719. the apostles impaled

  720. the Sanhedrin

  721. on the horns

  722. of a dilemma.

  723. He sets them up

  724. for failure.

  725. Either they have

  726. to deny God

  727. or they have

  728. to deny themselves

  729. as proper judges

  730. over Israel.

  731. Peter and John

  732. spoke on behalf

  733. of God

  734. in Jesus Christ.

  735. They put the Sanhedrin

  736. in a position

  737. to worship

  738. their own power

  739. or the God

  740. of all power.

  741. And sadly,

  742. the Sanhedrin

  743. chose the former.

  744. verse 20,

  745. for we cannot

  746. but speak

  747. of what we have

  748. seen

  749. and heard.

  750. So compelling

  751. and so moving

  752. to them.

  753. The good news

  754. of the gospel

  755. of Jesus Christ

  756. and the effect

  757. that it had had

  758. on them.

  759. They couldn't help

  760. but speak

  761. about it.

  762. And here they stand,

  763. verse 19 and 20,

  764. boldly before

  765. their government.

  766. These men

  767. had Christ

  768. put to death.

  769. Little help

  770. from the Romans,

  771. of course.

  772. But had Christ

  773. put to death

  774. and here they stand

  775. in defiance

  776. of their government.

  777. Now a note on that.

  778. We're told in the scripture

  779. to obey our government.

  780. Are we not?

  781. Peter himself

  782. writes in 1 Peter 2,

  783. 13-17.

  784. I'll shorten it

  785. for the sake of time.

  786. Through 15.

  787. Be subject

  788. for the Lord's sake

  789. to every human institution,

  790. whether it be

  791. to the emperor

  792. as supreme

  793. or to governors

  794. as sent by him

  795. to punish

  796. those who do evil

  797. and to praise

  798. those who do good.

  799. 14.

  800. 13 and 14.

  801. Be subject

  802. for the Lord

  803. to every human institution,

  804. whether it be

  805. to the emperor

  806. as supreme

  807. or to governors

  808. as sent by him

  809. to punish

  810. those who do evil

  811. and to praise

  812. those who do good.

  813. Paul wrote

  814. something similar.

  815. Romans 13-1.

  816. Let every person

  817. be subject

  818. to the governing authorities

  819. for there is no authority

  820. except from God

  821. and those that exist

  822. have been instituted

  823. by God.

  824. So we're told

  825. the scripture

  826. to obey the government

  827. but

  828. not at the cost

  829. of disobeying God.

  830. So if any government

  831. in the world

  832. or if our government

  833. speaks in direct opposition

  834. to the command of God,

  835. we're freed from obeying

  836. that command

  837. in order to obey

  838. the command of God.

  839. And we see them doing that.

  840. This wonderful example

  841. of that here.

  842. Standing up to the Sanhedrin's

  843. command to no longer speak

  844. in the name of Christ.

  845. For we cannot but speak

  846. of what we have seen

  847. and heard.

  848. And the last part of the text,

  849. they further threatened them.

  850. They're bold in this proclamation.

  851. They threatened them

  852. a little bit more.

  853. Probably with the threat

  854. of imprisonment

  855. and possible death.

  856. Let them go.

  857. You'll find no way

  858. to punish them

  859. because of the people.

  860. Because they're afraid

  861. of what the people

  862. are going to say about them.

  863. They're afraid of losing power

  864. in the eyes of the people.

  865. Because they were all

  866. praising God

  867. for what had happened

  868. for the man on whom

  869. the sign of healing

  870. was performed

  871. was more than 40 years old.

  872. It was a very significant miracle.

  873. It was a massive, massive miracle.

  874. From birth,

  875. he couldn't walk.

  876. Now he can.

  877. This old man

  878. has been sitting,

  879. excuse me if you're over 40.

  880. It's a very significant miracle

  881. is the point.

  882. You've been crippled

  883. for a very long,

  884. long time.

  885. So the exhortation

  886. is to be obedient.

  887. Let me add to that.

  888. Be obedient at all costs.

  889. So here they are,

  890. Peter and John

  891. in unison saying,

  892. we know what you're telling us to do

  893. but we must obey God.

  894. We must speak

  895. of what we have seen

  896. and what we have heard.

  897. We must tell people

  898. of the only way

  899. to salvation.

  900. The cost is too high.

  901. The war is too precious.

  902. We must speak

  903. in the name of Christ.

  904. Be obedient at all costs.

  905. And what does that obedience

  906. look like in this context?

  907. It's boldness

  908. in the face of persecution.

  909. That's the way

  910. in which they were obedient.

  911. That's the way

  912. they're going to continue

  913. being obedient.

  914. In the rest of our text

  915. through verse 31

  916. next week,

  917. we're going to see them

  918. pray for even more boldness.

  919. Thank God for their boldness

  920. and they're going to pray

  921. for even more boldness.

  922. So obedience at all cost

  923. is boldness

  924. in the face

  925. both in the midst of

  926. and in the threat of

  927. persecution.

  928. So I want us to see

  929. two things quickly

  930. kind of in summary.

  931. First,

  932. the command of boldness

  933. in the face of persecution.

  934. This is obedience.

  935. The command of boldness

  936. in the face of persecution

  937. and the example of boldness

  938. in the face of persecution.

  939. The command of boldness

  940. in the face of persecution.

  941. We are,

  942. beloved Christians,

  943. disciples of Jesus Christ,

  944. to live and serve

  945. the lost world

  946. just as our Lord did.

  947. That is the point,

  948. the ultimate point

  949. of what we're doing

  950. together today.

  951. The exaltation of Jesus Christ,

  952. the glory of God

  953. in the salvation

  954. of His people.

  955. That's the work

  956. that we're about.

  957. We gather today

  958. not to feel good

  959. about ourselves.

  960. We didn't gather today

  961. to meet with friends.

  962. So I sure hope not.

  963. We gather today

  964. to worship the Lord,

  965. to be equipped,

  966. to be sent back out

  967. to the world.

  968. We're gathered to go.

  969. Gathered to go.

  970. Gathered to go.

  971. We shouldn't neglect gathering,

  972. but we also shouldn't neglect

  973. the going.

  974. We're to live and serve

  975. the lost world

  976. just as our Lord did.

  977. Mark 10, 45,

  978. Jesus says,

  979. For even the Son of Man

  980. came not to be served,

  981. but to serve

  982. and to give His life

  983. as a ransom from me.

  984. That's why Jesus came

  985. to the earth,

  986. to ransom the church

  987. to the glory of God.

  988. In 1 Timothy 1, 15,

  989. Paul states,

  990. Jesus Christ came into the world

  991. to save sinners.

  992. In John 20, 21,

  993. Jesus says,

  994. As the Father has sent me

  995. into the world

  996. to be a ransom for many,

  997. to save sinners,

  998. even so,

  999. I am sending you.

  1000. The book of Acts

  1001. is about that.

  1002. Jesus Christ exalted

1003. at the right hand of the Father

1004. sending the Spirit of God

  1005. to His people

  1006. so that He's multiplied

  1007. across the planet.

  1008. Hands and feet,

  1009. moving,

  1010. mouthpieces,

  1011. preaching

1012. the good news of Jesus Christ.

  1013. He has multiplied Himself.

  1014. He does that

  1015. even in our suffering.

1016. As the Father has sent me,

  1017. even so,

  1018. I am sending you.

  1019. You're familiar with Matthew 28,

  1020. 18-20?

1021. Jesus issues the marching orders

  1022. to the apostles

  1023. and the church.

1024. This is for each one of us,

  1025. beloved.

1026. All authority in heaven and earth

1027. has been given to me.

  1028. Go, therefore,

  1029. and make disciples

  1030. of all nations,

  1031. baptizing them

1032. in the name of the Father

  1033. and of the Son

  1034. and the Holy Spirit,

  1035. teaching them to observe

1036. all that I have commanded you,

  1037. and behold,

1038. I am with you always

1039. to the end of the age.

1040. This command for us to go

1041. is sandwiched on either side

  1042. by Christ's authority

  1043. and His presence,

  1044. power and presence

1045. on either side of us

  1046. to go and carry

  1047. the good news

  1048. to all nations,

  1049. raising up disciples.

1050. I hate that I have to say

  1051. disciples of Jesus Christ

1052. make disciples of Jesus Christ.

  1053. Duh.

1054. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

1055. This is to be the activity

  1056. of all of us.

  1057. The primary task

1058. of the disciple of Jesus Christ

  1059. is to propagate

1060. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1061. far and wide

1062. in order to make disciples.

1063. Do you share Paul's sentiment

  1064. that he expresses

  1065. in 1 Corinthians 9.16?

  1066. Do you share this?

1067. For if I preach the gospel,

1068. that gives me no ground

  1069. for boasting,

1070. for necessity is laid upon me.

  1071. Woe to me

1072. if I do not preach

  1073. the gospel.

  1074. This weekend

  1075. at the biblical counseling

  1076. and discipleship training

1077. that a number of us

  1078. from our church

  1079. participated in.

  1080. It's a wonderful thing.

1081. I'm going to encourage you

1082. to go to it next year.

  1083. One of the speakers

  1084. said multiple times

  1085. that a common question

  1086. he asks

  1087. counselees,

  1088. those he's counseling,

1089. and I really love this,

  1090. would you rather

  1091. glorify God

  1092. than breathe?

  1093. Would you rather

  1094. glorify God

  1095. than breathe?

  1096. Because of what

  1097. he's done for you,

  1098. the way in which

  1099. he's expressed

  1100. is great love

  1101. for us.

  1102. Is that so precious

  1103. to you?

  1104. Christ must be

  1105. magnified in my life.

  1106. I'd rather do that

  1107. than breathe.

  1108. In John 15.8,

  1109. Jesus states,

1110. By this is my Father

  1111. glorified,

  1112. that you bear

  1113. much fruit,

1114. and so prove to be

  1115. my disciples.

  1116. And he says

  1117. in John 14.15,

  1118. If you love me,

  1119. you will keep

  1120. my commandments.

  1121. Now, beloved,

  1122. it's the normative

  1123. response.

  1124. It's the thing

  1125. that should be

  1126. happening.

  1127. We properly

  1128. treasure the gospel

  1129. as we should.

  1130. Really understand

  1131. our sin.

  1132. Really get

  1133. our depravity.

  1134. What we've been

  1135. saved from.

  1136. Eternal damnation.

  1137. Eternal separation

  1138. from him.

  1139. But because of what

1140. Christ did on our behalf,

  1141. we can have life

  1142. and life everlasting.

  1143. Love Christ

  1144. for that.

  1145. He should be

  1146. most pleasurable

  1147. for us.

  1148. We'll keep

  1149. his commandments.

  1150. But one follows

  1151. the other.

  1152. In front of your

  1153. bulletin,

  1154. you can see

  1155. just two quotes

  1156. I'll read.

  1157. Love is not

  1158. just a sentiment.

  1159. This is Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  1160. Love is not

  1161. just a sentiment.

  1162. Love is a great

  1163. controlling passion

  1164. and it always

  1165. expresses itself

  1166. in terms

  1167. of obedience.

  1168. He's speaking

1169. of our love of God

  1170. here.

  1171. It's of no value

1172. if I just tell my wife

  1173. Sam, I love you,

  1174. and I do nothing

  1175. to actually show her

  1176. and express to her

  1177. my love of her.

  1178. The same is true

  1179. of God.

  1180. You cannot just

  1181. say it.

  1182. There has to be

  1183. some outflow

  1184. of that.

1185. Who we are in Christ

  1186. produces this love

  1187. and produces

  1188. the work

  1189. we're meant to be

  1190. about.

  1191. Quote by Augustine

  1192. is a typo.

  1193. There should be

1194. an E at the end

  1195. of his name.

  1196. Augustine,

  1197. if you prefer.

  1198. Wicked men

  1199. obey from fear.

  1200. Good men

  1201. from love.

  1202. Good men

  1203. from love.

  1204. So we have a

  1205. command to boldness

  1206. in the face

  1207. of persecution.

  1208. Don't think

  1209. yourself exempt

  1210. from this.

  1211. It's for your

  1212. good.

  1213. Then we have

  1214. the example

  1215. of boldness

  1216. in the face

  1217. of persecution.

  1218. 1 Peter 2

  1219. 21.

  1220. Peter writes,

  1221. For to this

  1222. you have been

  1223. called,

  1224. because Christ

  1225. also suffered

  1226. for you.

  1227. He's talking

  1228. about suffering.

  1229. For to this

  1230. you have been

  1231. called,

  1232. because Christ

  1233. also suffered

  1234. for you,

  1235. leaving you

  1236. an example

  1237. so that you

  1238. might follow

  1239. in his steps.

  1240. Jesus Christ

  1241. is the great

  1242. example for us

  1243. of boldness

  1244. in the face

  1245. of persecution.

  1246. Turn with me

  1247. if you will

  1248. please in your

  1249. copy of God's

  1250. word to Matthew

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1251. chapter 26.

  1252. Amen.

  1253. I had every

  1254. intention of

  1255. this being

  1256. a short

  1257. sermon.

  1258. Hang with

  1259. me.

  1260. Matthew 26

  1261. beginning

  1262. in verse

  1263. 36.

  1264. It's a picture

  1265. of Jesus

  1266. in the garden

  1267. of Gethsemane

  1268. before the

  1269. eve of his

  1270. crucifixion.

  1271. It's the night

  1272. before.

  1273. Most of you

  1274. are probably

  1275. familiar with

  1276. the story.

  1277. Think about

  1278. him as an

  1279. example of

  1280. boldness in

  1281. the face

  1282. of persecution.

  1283. Find

  1284. yourself in

  1285. the garden

  1286. in this

  1287. place.

  1288. Verse 36

  1289. and Jesus

  1290. went with

  1291. them to a

  1292. place called

  1293. Gethsemane.

  1294. He said to

  1295. his disciples,

  1296. sit here while

  1297. I go over

  1298. there and

  1299. pray.

  1300. And taking

  1301. with him

  1302. Peter and

  1303. the two

  1304. sons of

  1305. Zebedee,

  1306. he began

  1307. to be

  1308. sorrowful

  1309. and troubled.

  1310. He's

  1311. anticipating

  1312. what's

  1313. coming the

  1314. next day.

  1315. Then he

  1316. said to

  1317. them,

  1318. my soul

  1319. is very

  1320. sorrowful,

  1321. even to

  1322. death,

  1323. remain here

  1324. and watch

  1325. with me.

  1326. And going

  1327. a little

  1328. farther,

  1329. he fell

  1330. on his

  1331. face and

  1332. prayed,

  1333. saying,

  1334. my

  1335. father,

  1336. if it

  1337. be

  1338. possible,

  1339. let

  1340. this

  1341. cup

  1342. pass

  1343. from

  1344. me.

  1345. Nevertheless,

  1346. not as

  1347. I will,

  1348. but as

  1349. you will.

  1350. He's

  1351. saying,

  1352. if it's at

  1353. all possible,

  1354. if there's

  1355. any other

  1356. way for

  1357. this to

  1358. be

  1359. accomplished,

  1360. this is

  1361. the way

  1362. we know

  1363. that this

  1364. had to

  1365. happen in

  1366. this way.

  1367. Jesus

  1368. himself

  1369. said,

  1370. if I

  1371. can avoid

  1372. the

  1373. persecution,

  1374. can we

  1375. do this

  1376. another way?

  1377. Is there

  1378. any other

  1379. way to

  1380. do it?

  1381. But I

  1382. prefer what

  1383. you will.

  1384. verse 40,

  1385. and he

  1386. came to

  1387. the

  1388. disciples

  1389. and he

  1390. found them

  1391. sleeping

  1392. and he

  1393. said to

  1394. Peter,

  1395. so could

  1396. you not

  1397. watch with

  1398. me one

  1399. hour?

  1400. Watch and

  1401. pray that

  1402. you may

  1403. not enter

  1404. into temptation.

  1405. The spirit

  1406. indeed is

  1407. willing,

  1408. but the

  1409. flesh is

  1410. weak.

  1411. Again,

  1412. for the

  1413. second time,

  1414. he went

  1415. away and

  1416. prayed,

  1417. my father,

  1418. if this

  1419. cannot pass

  1420. unless I

  1421. drink it,

  1422. we understand

  1423. that to be

  1424. the wrath

  1425. of God,

  1426. your will

  1427. be done.

  1428. If this

  1429. cannot pass

  1430. unless I

  1431. drink it,

  1432. your will

  1433. be done.

  1434. And again,

  1435. he came and

  1436. found them

  1437. sleeping,

  1438. for their

  1439. eyes were

  1440. heavy.

  1441. So leaving

  1442. them again,

  1443. he doesn't

  1444. even wake

  1445. them up

  1446. that time,

  1447. so leaving

  1448. them again,

  1449. he went

  1450. away and

  1451. prayed for

  1452. the third

  1453. time,

  1454. saying the

  1455. same words

  1456. again.

  1457. So three

  1458. times he

  1459. said,

  1460. is there

  1461. any other

  1462. way for

  1463. this to

  1464. happen?

  1465. I would

  1466. prefer to

  1467. avoid the

  1468. persecution,

  1469. but your

  1470. will be

  1471. done.

  1472. Then he

  1473. came to

  1474. the disciples

  1475. and said

  1476. to them,

  1477. sleep and

  1478. take your

  1479. rest later

  1480. on.

  1481. See,

  1482. the hour is

  1483. at hand,

  1484. and the

  1485. Son of

  1486. Man is

  1487. betrayed

  1488. into the

  1489. hands of

  1490. sinners.

  1491. Rise,

  1492. let us

  1493. be going.

  1494. See,

  1495. my betrayer

  1496. is at

  1497. hand.

  1498. So we

  1499. ask that

  1500. the Lord

  1501. would take

  1502. the persecution

  1503. from him.

  1504. He doesn't

  1505. do so,

  1506. and he

  1507. boldly

  1508. faces it.

  1509. The will

  1510. of God,

  1511. that the

  1512. people of

  1513. God are

  1514. persecuted

  1515. for the

  1516. sake of

  1517. the

  1518. gospel.

  1519. Jesus is

  1520. our great

  1521. example in

  1522. this.

  1523. Hebrews 12,

  1524. 1 and 2.

  1525. Therefore,

  1526. since we

  1527. are surrounded

  1528. by so

  1529. great a

  1530. cloud of

  1531. witnesses,

  1532. let us

  1533. also lay

  1534. aside every

  1535. weight and

  1536. sin which

  1537. clings so

  1538. closely,

  1539. and let us

  1540. run with

  1541. endurance the

  1542. race that

  1543. is set

  1544. before us.

  1545. This is

  1546. what I've

  1547. been talking

  1548. about.

  1549. This is

  1550. the race

  1551. set before

  1552. us,

  1553. this battle

  1554. that we're

  1555. in to

  1556. preach the

  1557. good news

  1558. to the

  1559. whole world.

  1560. Looking to

  1561. Jesus,

  1562. the founder

  1563. and perfecter

  1564. of our

  1565. faith,

  1566. who for

  1567. the joy

  1568. that was

  1569. set before

  1570. him,

  1571. endured the

  1572. cross,

  1573. despising the

  1574. shame,

  1575. and is

  1576. seated at

  1577. the right

  1578. hand of

  1579. the throne

  1580. of God.

  1581. So we see

  1582. Jesus looks

  1583. to the joy

  1584. that is

  1585. before him

  1586. and the

  1587. exaltation

  1588. of his

  1589. person at

  1590. the right

  1591. hand of

  1592. God in

  1593. order to

  1594. endure the

  1595. suffering that

  1596. will come.

  1597. He has an

  1598. eternal

  1599. mindset.

  1600. He has a

  1601. concern for

  1602. the will of

  1603. God and the

  1604. glory of

  1605. God.

  1606. And so he

  1607. suffers well.

  1608. He's obedient

  1609. at all

  1610. cost.

  1611. Jesus is

  1612. certainly the

  1613. greatest and

  1614. highest example

  1615. of this.

  1616. There are

  1617. lesser examples.

  1618. I want you to

  1619. be encouraged by

  1620. these things.

  1621. They can be of

  1622. massive encouragement

  1623. to us.

  1624. To know about

  1625. the persecution

  1626. that happens in

  1627. the world around

  1628. us makes me

  1629. being called

  1630. weird so

  1631. inconsequential.

  1632. people.

  1633. You familiar

  1634. with Voice of

  1635. the Martyrs?

  1636. You can

  1637. subscribe to

  1638. this for free.

  1639. This is a

  1640. cool organization.

  1641. Persecution.com

  1642. They'll send you a

  1643. deal like this.

  1644. I think it's

  1645. monthly that it

  1646. comes.

  1647. They tend to

  1648. stack up on my

  1649. desk and I

  1650. read them and

  1651. then go back.

  1652. I don't even

  1653. know where we're

  1654. at in the

  1655. April.

  1656. Monthly.

  1657. These will

  1658. come to you.

  1659. Great resources.

  1660. Great videos.

  1661. Pray for these

  1662. people.

  1663. I can guarantee

  1664. you they're

  1665. praying for us.

  1666. They pity us

  1667. for not

  1668. getting to

  1669. experience the

  1670. reproach of

  1671. Christ the

  1672. way they do.

  1673. Pray for

  1674. them.

  1675. Be encouraged

  1676. by them.

  1677. Another resource

  1678. I want to

  1679. commend to you

  1680. is Fox's

  1681. Book of

  1682. Martyrs.

  1683. Thumb through

  1684. these pages

  1685. and then try

  1686. to put American

  1687. Christianity in

  1688. the context of

  1689. the history of

  1690. the church.

  1691. Something's

  1692. really wrong

  1693. with us in

  1694. that way.

  1695. I want to

  1696. read one to

  1697. you quickly.

  1698. There were

  1699. ten systematic

  1700. persecutions

  1701. by the Roman

  1702. Empire.

  1703. This one

  1704. happens in

  1705. the seventh

  1706. systematic

  1707. persecution.

  1708. It's under

  1709. the emperor

  1710. Decius

  1711. and in

  1712. Asia under

  1713. the governor

  1714. Optimus.

  1715. It's

  1716. 80-249-251.

  1717. This took

  1718. place.

  1719. Short little

  1720. account.

  1721. Two quick

  1722. paragraphs.

  1723. A weak

  1725. Nicomachus

  1726. was brought

  1727. before Optimus

  1728. and ordered

  1729. to sacrifice

  1730. to the

  1731. pagan idols.

  1732. Nicomachus

  1733. replied,

  1734. I cannot

  1735. pay the

  1736. respect to

  1737. devils that

  1738. is due

  1739. only to

  1740. the

  1741. Almighty.

  1742. It's a good

  1743. start, right?

  1744. He was

  1745. immediately

  1746. placed on

  1747. the rack

  1748. and after

  1749. enduring his

  1750. torments for

  1751. only a short

  1752. time,

  1753. recanted his

  1754. faith in

  1755. Christ.

  1756. As soon as

  1757. he was freed

  1758. from the

  1759. rack,

  1760. he was seized

  1761. with a great

  1762. agony and

  1763. fell to the

  1764. ground and

  1765. died.

  1766. Okay, so

  1767. there's the

  1768. weak Christian

  1769. Nicomachus.

  1770. seeing what

  1771. seemed to be

  1772. a terrible

  1773. judgment,

  1774. Denisa,

  1775. a 16-year-old

  1776. girl who

  1777. was among

  1778. the observers

  1779. exclaimed,

  1780. are young

  1781. people in the

  1782. room?

  1783. Are you

  1784. hearing?

  1785. Denisa,

  1786. a 16-year-old

  1787. girl,

  1788. yells out,

  1789. Oh,

  1790. unhappy

  1791. wretch,

  1792. why would

  1793. you buy

  1794. a moment's

  1795. ease at

  1796. the expense

  1797. of a

  1798. miserable

  1799. eternity?

  1800. When

  1801. Optimus

  1802. heard this,

  1803. he called

  1804. her to

  1805. himself,

  1806. and when

  1807. Denisa

  1808. confessed that

  1809. she was a

  1810. Christian,

  1811. he had her

  1812. beheaded.

  1813. Are you

  1814. more like

  1815. Nicomachus

  1816. or Denisa?

  1817. Christian,

  1818. we are to

  1819. be obedient

  1820. no matter

  1821. the cost.

  1822. The companion

  1823. to the coming

  1824. of the kingdom

  1825. of God is

  1826. Christian

  1827. persecution.

  1828. The kingdom

  1829. of God

  1830. will come

  1831. with or

  1832. without you.

  1833. I pray that

  1834. you would

  1835. choose to

  1836. be a

  1837. minister of

  1838. reconciliation

  1839. and not

  1840. sit idly

  1841. by on

  1842. the sidelines.

  1843. Your

  1844. momentary

  1845. comfort is

  1846. not worth

  1847. trading for

  1848. the

  1849. astounding

  1850. joy you

  1851. can have

  1852. in Christ

  1853. even now

  1854. in the

  1855. midst of

  1856. such

  1857. suffering.

  1858. Remember

  1859. what Jesus

  1860. said in

  1861. John 15,

  1862. If the

  1863. world hates

  1864. you,

  1865. know that

  1866. it has

  1867. hated me

  1868. before it

  1869. hated you.

  1870. If you

  1871. were of

  1872. the world,

  1873. the world

  1874. would love

  1875. you as

  1876. its own.

  1877. But because

  1878. you were

  1879. not of

  1880. the world,

  1881. but I

  1882. chose you

  1883. out of

  1884. the world,

  1885. therefore

  1886. the world

  1887. hates you.

  1888. Remember

  1889. the word

  1890. that I

  1891. said to

  1892. you,

  1893. a servant

  1894. is not

  1895. greater

  1896. than his

  1897. master.

  1898. If they

  1899. persecuted

  1900. me,

  1901. they will

  1902. also

  1903. persecute

  1904. you.

  1905. If they

  1906. kept

  1907. my word,

  1908. they will

  1909. also keep

  1910. yours.

  1911. do

  1912. not

  1913. continue

  1914. to go

  1915. on from

  1916. this

  1917. day

  1918. willing

  1919. to be

  1920. complacent

  1921. and

  1922. comfortable.

  1923. Be

  1924. bold

  1925. for the

  1926. sake of

  1927. others,

  1928. the gospel

  1929. of Jesus

  1930. Christ,

  1931. the glory

  1932. of his

  1933. name,

  1934. and be

  1935. prepared.

  1936. You

  1937. will

  1938. be

  1939. persecuted.

  1940. If you

  1941. have not

  1942. placed

  1943. believing

  1944. faith

  1945. in

  1946. Jesus

  1947. Christ,

  1948. this

  1949. is

  1950. not

  1951. a

  1952. good

  1953. evangelistic

  1954. sermon.

  1955. you

  1956. need to

  1957. know,

  1958. though,

  1959. that there

  1960. are

  1961. people

  1962. in

  1963. this

  1964. room

  1965. that

  1966. are

  1967. willing

  1968. to

  1969. risk

  1970. everything.

  1971. And I

  1972. mean that.

  1973. I know

  1974. people in

  1975. this

  1976. room

  1977. who are

  1978. willing

  1979. to

  1980. risk

  1981. everything,

  1982. their

  1983. lives,

  1984. the

  1985. lives

  1986. of

  1987. their

  1988. families,

  1989. so that

  1990. you

  1991. would

  1992. repent

  1993. and

  1994. believe

  1995. in

  1996. Christ.

  1997. When

  1998. we

  1999. come

  2000. to

  2001. you

  2002. with

  2003. the

  2004. good

  2005. news

  2006. and

  2007. suffer

  2008. for

  2009. it,

  2010. or at

  2011. least

  2012. are

  2013. willing

  2014. to

  2015. suffer

  2016. for

  2017. it,

  2018. we

  2019. are

  2020. saying

  2021. in

  2022. me

  2023. behold

  2024. the

  2025. love

  2026. of

  2027. God.

  2028. I

  2029. care

  2030. about

  2031. you

  2032. deeply

  2033. and

  2034. as

  2035. I

  2036. sacrifice

  2037. to

  2038. come

  2039. to

  2040. you

  2041. and

  2042. preach

  2043. to

  2044. you

  2045. and

  2046. risk

  2047. my

  2048. reputation

  2049. or

  2050. my

  2051. status

  2052. or

  2053. my

  2054. position

  2055. or

  2056. my

  2057. job

  2058. behold

  2059. the

  2060. love

  2061. of

  2062. Christ.

  2063. Repent

  2064. and

  2065. believe.

  2066. It's

  2067. not very

  2068. evangelistic

  2069. in the

  2070. world's

  2071. terms,

  2072. I

  2073. should

  2074. say,

  2075. but

  2076. I'm

  2077. unwilling

  2078. to

  2079. neuter

  2080. the

  2081. gospel.

  2082. The

  2083. call to

  2084. follow

  2085. Jesus

  2086. is a

  2087. call to

  2088. die.

  2089. You

  2090. know

  2091. that.

  2092. Not

  2093. enough

  2094. churches

  2095. are

  2096. saying

  2097. that.

  2098. A

  2099. lot

  2100. of

  2101. churches

  2102. are

  2103. saying

  2104. the

  2105. risk

  2106. of

  2107. following

  2108. Jesus

  2109. is

  2110. that

  2111. someone

  2112. with

  2113. their

  2114. head

  2115. bowed

  2116. and

  2117. their

  2118. eyes

  2119. closed

  2120. might

  2121. peak.

  2122. That's

  2123. the

  2124. potential

  2125. risk

  2126. you

  2127. face.

  2128. Most

  2129. places

  2130. in the

  2131. world

  2132. to

  2133. follow

  2134. Jesus

  2135. means

  2136. to

  2137. be

  2138. disowned

  2139. by

  2140. your

  2141. family.

  2142. It

  2143. means

  2144. you

  2145. can't

  2146. go

  2147. to

  2148. university.

  2149. It

  2150. means

  2151. you

  2152. may

  2153. be

  2154. beaten

  2155. in

  2156. the

  2157. street

  2158. and

  2159. left

  2160. for

  2161. dead.

  2162. It

  2163. may

  2164. mean

  2165. you

  2166. are

  2167. imprisoned.

  2168. It

  2169. may

  2170. mean

  2171. you're

  2172. beheaded.

  2173. Horrible

  2174. atrocities.

  2175. It's

  2176. a call

  2177. to die.

  2178. It's

  2179. a call

  2180. to hold

  2181. our

  2182. lives

  2183. loosely.

  2184. It's

  2185. a call

  2186. to

  2187. give

  2188. them

  2189. up

  2190. for

  2191. the

  2192. !

  2193. of

  2194. our

  2195. king.

  2196. And

  2197. if

  2198. you

  2199. don't

  2200. find

  2201. Christ

  2202. precious

  2203. enough

  2204. to

  2205. give

  2206. up

  2207. everything

  2208. to

  2209. gain

  2210. him

  2211. then

  2212. you

  2213. don't

  2214. deserve

  2215. him.

  2216. Because

  2217. the

  2218. call

  2219. to

  2220. follow

  2221. Christ

  2222. is

  2223. a

  2224. call

  2225. to

  2226. die

  2227. but

  2228. it's

  2229. also

  2230. a

  2231. call

  2232. to

  2233. a

  2234. measurable

  2235. joy

  2236. in

  2237. him

  2238. here

  2239. and

  2240. forever

  2241. more.

  2242. Let's

  2243. pray

  2244. together.
