  1. First of all, thank you guys, because that was very powerful musical worship this morning.

  2. As always, I love that part of our morning when we get to sing together to the Lord.

  3. ! It's a very comforting and a wonderful time.

  4. It's an honor and a privilege to be with you this morning.

  5. And I would ask for you to open up your Bibles, if you have them with you, to Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  6. Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  7. As I've been asked to preach from Acts chapter 5, verses 12 through 42,

    Acts 5:12–42

  8. as we continue our verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Acts.

  9. Just by way of review, as we took a week off from the book of Acts,

  10. for those of you who have not been with us, guests, or if you've just missed some weekends,

  11. through the book of Acts, we have seen the start of the Christian church.

  12. We have seen the disciples go out as they start to preach the gospel, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  13. And we also see beginning of persecution of the church.

  14. In chapter 4, we see, after the apostles heal a crippled man,

  15. that they are arrested as persecution starts,

  16. and they are put before the Sanhedrin, the Senate Council of Israel,

  17. and they are charged not to preach anymore in the name of Jesus.

  18. The week before last, we saw Ananias and Sapphira who lie to the Holy Spirit,

  19. and therefore God pronounces judgment upon them,

  20. and they are killed for their lying to the Holy Spirit.

  21. And that is where we pick up as news of this activity spreads throughout the nation of Israel,

  22. throughout the city of Jerusalem.

  23. And we pick up in verse 12 of chapter 5,

  24. and God's Word reads, beginning in verse 12,

  25. Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles,

  26. and they were all together in Solomon's portico.

  27. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem.

  28. And more than ever, believers were added to the Lord,

  29. multitudes of both men and women,

  30. so that they even carried out the sick into the streets,

  31. and laid them on cots and mats,

  32. that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.

  33. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem,

  34. bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits,

  35. and they were all healed.

  36. But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him,

  37. that is, the party of the Sadducees,

  38. and filled with jealousy, they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.

  39. But during the night, an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors

  40. and brought them out and said,

  41. Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.

  42. And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.

  43. Now when the high priest came and those who were with him,

  44. they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel,

  45. and sent to the prison to have them brought.

  46. When the officers came, they did not find them in the prison,

  47. so they returned and reported,

  48. We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors,

  49. but when we opened them, we found no one inside.

  50. Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priest heard these words,

  51. they were greatly perplexed about them,

  52. wondering what this would come to,

  53. and someone came and told them,

  54. Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.

  55. Then the captain with the officers went and brought them,

  56. but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

  57. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council,

  58. and the high priest questioned them, saying,

  59. We strictly charged you not to teach in this name.

  60. Yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching,

  61. and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.

  62. But Peter and the apostles answered,

  63. We must obey God rather than men.

  64. The God of our fathers raised Jesus,

  65. whom you killed by hanging him on a tree.

  66. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior,

  67. to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sin.

  68. And we are witnesses to these things,

  69. and so is the Holy Spirit,

  70. whom God has given to those who obey him.

  71. When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

  72. But a Pharisee in the council,

  73. named Gamaliel,

  74. a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people,

  75. stood up and gave orders to put the man outside for a little while.

  76. And he said to the men,

  77. Men of Israel,

  78. take care what you are about to do with these men.

  79. For before these days Theodos rose up,

  80. claiming to be somebody,

  81. and a number of men, about 400, joined him.

  82. He was killed,

  83. and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.

  84. After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census,

  85. and drew away some of the people after him.

  86. He too perished,

  87. and all who followed him were scattered.

  88. So in the present case I tell you,

  89. keep away from these men,

  90. and let them alone.

  91. For if this plan or this undertaking is of man,

  92. it will fail.

  93. But if it is of God,

  94. you will not be able to overthrow them.

  95. You might even be found opposing God.

  96. So they took his advice.

  97. And when they had called in the apostles,

  98. they beat them and charged them

  99. not to speak in the name of Jesus,

  100. and let them go.

  101. Then they left the presence of the council,

  102. rejoicing that they were counted worthy

  103. to suffer dishonor for the name.

  104. And every day in the temple,

  105. and from house to house,

  106. they did not cease teaching

  107. and preaching

  108. that Christ is Jesus.

  109. In his book entitled,

  110. Do Not Waste Your Life,

  111. Pastor John Piper writes,

  112. and I quote,

  113. If our single,

  114. all-embracing passion

  115. is to make much of Christ

  116. in this life and death,

  117. and if the life that magnifies him the most

  118. is the life of costly love,

  119. then life is risk,

  120. and risk is right.

  121. To run from it is to waste your life.

  122. He goes on,

  123. and he says,

  124. I define risk very simply

  125. as an action that exposes you

  126. to the possibility of loss or injury.

  127. If you take a risk,

  128. you can lose money,

  129. you can lose face,

  130. you can lose health,

  131. or even your life.

  132. And what's worse,

  133. if you take a risk,

  134. you may endanger other people,

  135. and not just yourself.

  136. Their lives may be at stake.

  137. Will a wise and loving person

  138. then ever take a risk?

  139. Is it wise to expose yourself to loss?

  140. Is it loving to endanger others?

  141. Is losing life the same as wasting it?

  142. He answers,

  143. It depends.

  144. Of course,

  145. you can throw your life away

  146. in a hundred sinful ways

  147. and die as a result.

  148. In that case,

  149. losing life and wasting it

  150. would be the same.

  151. But losing life

  152. is not always the same as wasting it.

  153. What if the circumstances are such

  154. that not taking a risk

  155. will result in loss and injury?

  156. It may not be wise to play it safe.

  157. And what if a successful risk

  158. would bring great benefit to many people?

  159. And its failure would bring harm

  160. only to yourself.

  161. It may not be loving to choose comfort

  162. or security when something great

  163. may be achieved for the cause of Christ

  164. and for the good of others.

  165. Close quote.

  166. And brothers and sisters,

  167. we are here this morning,

  168. many of us,

  169. if not all of us,

  170. having been born again

  171. by the Spirit of God

  172. and by the grace of God

  173. through the blessing

  174. of the fruits

  175. of the work,

  176. of the risk

  177. that many godly men and women

  178. have taken for the cause of Christ

  179. in the last 2,000 years.

  180. Men and women

  181. who fully embody

  182. the very essence of that quote

  183. by John Piper.

  184. Men and women

  185. who have risked everything

  186. and who have paid

  187. the ultimate price

  188. and have lost their lives

  189. at the hands of enemies

  190. of the gospel.

  191. All so that

  192. the message

  193. which was

  194. at first

  195. handed down to them

  196. would continue

  197. to spread

  198. so that wretched sinners

  199. in their generation

  200. and generations to come

  201. could know

  202. and come to understand

  203. the most prized,

  204. the most worthy,

  205. the most beautiful

  206. type of knowledge

  207. that any human being

  208. can ever possibly attain to

  209. in this life.

  210. That is,

  211. the knowledge of Christ

  212. and the truth

  213. and the very fountain of truth

  214. from which all truth

  215. and every good

  216. and perfect thing

  217. springs up from,

  218. including the truth

  219. and the only way

  220. that sinners

  221. can ever come

  222. to a point

  223. where they can have

  224. peace with God.

  225. The gospel,

  226. brothers and sisters,

  227. is and has been

  228. a message

  229. that has been

  230. passed down to us

  231. and has been

  232. entrusted to us

  233. and looking back

  234. it has been

  235. a road

  236. filled and stained

  237. with much blood,

  238. sweat and tears

  239. but make no mistake

  240. about it

  241. that that is exactly

  242. how it was meant

  243. to be.

  244. Tribulation

  245. and persecution

  246. comes as a result

  247. of living a godly life

  248. for it was the first

  249. born among many brethren,

  250. the Lord Jesus Christ himself,

  251. who promised his disciples

  252. that tribulation

  253. would come to them

  254. while in this world,

  255. John 16, 33.

  256. And also in John 15, 20,

  257. he tells them,

  258. if they persecuted me,

  259. they will also persecute you.

  260. And the apostle Paul

  261. also affirms this

  262. as he emphatically states

  263. in 2 Timothy 3, 12,

  264. and we've heard it before,

  265. indeed,

  266. all who desire

  267. to live a godly life

  268. in Christ Jesus

  269. will be persecuted.

  270. And so in our text

  271. this morning,

  272. we will be looking

  273. at some truths

  274. behind these

  275. foundational affirmations

  276. and extract some

  277. applications for ourselves

  278. for it is my prayer

  279. this morning

  280. that every one of us

  281. would come

  282. to live a life

  283. of risk

  284. in faith

  285. in order that

  286. we may live our lives

  287. without wasting them.

  288. So I have divided

  289. this text into

  290. four headings,

  291. but we are only

  292. going to cover

  293. two of them.

  294. But let me give you

  295. all four

  296. and you can go back

  297. and consider the last

  298. two throughout your week.

  299. The four headings

  300. are, number one,

  301. the obedience

  302. of the apostles.

  303. Number two,

  304. the root cause

  305. of persecution.

  306. Number three,

  307. the proper perspective

  308. on persecution.

  309. And number four,

  310. the root of Christian

  311. confidence.

  312. So for our first heading,

  313. notice the obedience

  314. of the apostles.

  315. Beginning in verse 12

  316. through verse 16,

  317. we read,

  318. Now many signs and wonders

  319. were regularly done

  320. among the people

  321. by the hands of the apostles,

  322. and they were all together

  323. in Solomon's portico.

  324. None of the rest

  325. dared join them,

  326. but the people

  327. held them in high esteem.

  328. And more than ever,

  329. believers were added

  330. to the Lord,

  331. multitudes of both men

  332. and women,

  333. so that they even

  334. carried out the sick

  335. into the streets

  336. and laid them

  337. on cots and mats

  338. that as Peter came by,

  339. at least his shadow

  340. might fall on some of them.

  341. The people also gathered

  342. from the towns

  343. around Jerusalem,

  344. bringing the sick

  345. and those afflicted

  346. with unclean spirits,

  347. and they were all healed.

  348. Here,

  349. we see the apostles

  350. obeying and fulfilling

  351. that command

  352. of our Lord

  353. in Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18–20

  354. verses 18 through 20,

  355. when standing before

  356. his disciples

  357. after the resurrection,

  358. he commands them,

  359. saying,

  360. All authority

  361. has been given

  362. unto me

  363. on heaven and on earth.

  364. Go therefore

  365. and make disciples

  366. of all nations,

  367. baptizing them

  368. in the name of the Father

  369. and of the Son

  370. and of the Holy Spirit,

  371. teaching them

  372. to observe

  373. all that I have commanded

  374. you.

  375. We see in verse 12

  376. that the apostles

  377. were together

  378. in Solomon's portico,

  379. which it was

  380. on the eastern side

  381. of the temple

  382. in Jerusalem,

  383. and we see many signs

  384. and wonders

  385. are regularly done

  386. by them.

  387. The sick are being healed,

  388. those who are demon-possessed

  389. are being cleansed,

  390. and the news

  391. of this activity

  392. spreads like wildfire.

  393. We see in verse 16

  394. that the people

  395. from towns

  396. all around Jerusalem

  397. were going to them

  398. and were also being healed.

  399. Some of these healings

  400. appear to have

  401. unusually miraculous

  402. types of healings.

  403. As we see in verse 15,

  404. it states that

  405. some of the sick people

  406. were laid on cots

  407. and mats on the street

  408. hoping that Peter's shadow

  409. might fall on them

  410. so they could be healed.

  411. Now, some commentators

  412. say here

  413. that this verse

  414. does not teach

  415. that people were actually healed

  416. by the falling

  417. of Peter's shadow

  418. upon them

  419. and try to make arguments

  420. to that end.

  421. However, I have no problem

  422. believing that people

  423. were healed

  424. in this manner,

  425. and I do believe

  426. that that is the very purpose

  427. of the very mentioning

  428. of that text

  429. in that chapter.

  430. Elsewhere in the book of Acts,

  431. we see other miraculous healings

  432. through interesting objects.

  433. For example,

  434. in Acts 19,

  435. we see people healed

  436. by handkerchiefs

  437. and aprons

  438. that had simply touched

  439. the skin of the Apostle Paul

  440. and then taken

  441. to heal the sick.

  442. However,

  443. I don't think

  444. it really matters

  445. whether or not

  446. people were actually healed

  447. by Peter's shadow,

  448. and I believe

  449. it is rather inconsequential

  450. for our main purpose

  451. in our text this morning.

  452. Although we are told

  453. that all these people

  454. were being healed,

  455. and many signs and wonders

  456. were done

  457. among the people.

  458. But the question

  459. that I believe

  460. we should be asking

  461. is to what end?

  462. For what purpose?

  463. What did these healings accomplish?

  464. And how do these healings

  465. align with the Apostles' mission?

  466. The Great Commission.

  467. I think that there is certainly

  468. an amazement factor

  469. for us 21st century Christians

  470. when we read about

  471. incredible miracles

  472. and supernatural works

  473. of God in our Bibles,

  474. and we certainly believe them

  475. if we believe that God is

  476. and that He is

  477. who He says He is.

  478. But let me ask you

  479. this question.

  480. How many of you,

  481. like me,

  482. often,

  483. when you read

  484. of these wonders,

  485. think to yourself,

  486. God,

  487. I wish I could witness

  488. something

  489. of this magnitude.

  490. Something of this

  491. type of miracle.

  492. This power of yours

  493. in person

  494. today.

  495. And while I certainly

  496. believe that God

  497. is still doing miracles,

  498. I would agree

  499. with a cessationist

  500. point of view

  501. that miracles of this kind,

  502. ministries of healing

  503. of the kind

  504. that we see

  505. with the Apostles,

  506. ceased with the last

  507. of the Apostles

  508. in the first century.

  509. However,

  510. my goal is not to teach

  511. on cessationism,

  512. but I want us to look

  513. at the big picture

  514. of this text.

  515. So,

  516. to look at what

  517. the greater miracle

  518. is in the text

  519. that we still see

  520. to this day,

  521. but I think we often

  522. overlook and perhaps

  523. even undervalue

  524. that miracle

  525. which we still see

  526. to this day

  527. which is greater

  528. than healing miracles

  529. of the type.

  530. And so,

  531. like I said,

  532. sometimes I read

  533. this stuff

  534. and I think to myself,

  535. God,

  536. I would just love

  537. to see some miracles

  538. like this.

  539. To see such a display

  540. of your power.

  541. And I say that

  542. without realizing

  543. that I have seen

  544. supernatural works

  545. of God,

  546. of this magnitude

  547. and power

  548. multiple times

  549. and have heard

  550. of many more

  551. even then.

  552. And what do I mean

  553. by that?

  554. I'll answer

  555. with this question.

  556. Again,

  557. to what end

  558. were these signs

  559. and wonders done?

  560. Salvation.

  561. Salvation by regeneration

  562. through the preaching

  563. of the gospel.

  564. The purpose

  565. of signs and wonders

  566. was to validate

  567. and authenticate

  568. the apostles

  569. as true ambassadors

  570. of God.

  571. who were preaching

  572. the true counsel

  573. of God,

  574. the gospel.

  575. In Acts 2.22,

  576. Peter says,

  577. Men of Israel,

  578. hear these words.

  579. Jesus of Nazareth,

  580. a man attested

  581. to you

  582. by God

  583. with mighty works

  584. and wonders,

  585. signs that God

  586. did through him

  587. in your midst.

  588. Miracles

  589. were done

  590. to bear witness

  591. to God

  592. to the end

  593. that people

  594. might believe

  595. and repent.

  596. In John 20,

    John 20:30

  597. verses 30 and 31,

  598. John says,

  599. Now Jesus did

  600. many other signs

  601. in the presence

  602. of the disciples,

  603. which are not

  604. written in this book,

  605. but these are written

  606. so that you may believe

  607. that Jesus is the Christ,

  608. the Son of God,

  609. and that by believing

  610. you may have life

  611. in his name.

  612. Christ did not commission

  613. the apostles

  614. to go and simply provide

  615. temporary pain relief,

  616. to make a few fevers

  617. go away

  618. or to heal

  619. some broken bones,

  620. but rather

  621. to preach the gospel

  622. and make disciples

  623. so that people

  624. may have salvation,

  625. peace with God.

  626. And to that end,

  627. they were obedient

  628. and preached

  629. as they were commanded.

  630. And the fruit

  631. of their labor

  632. is seen in verse 14

  633. of our text

  634. where we read,

  635. And more than ever,

  636. believers

  637. were added to the Lord,

  638. multitudes of both men

  639. and women.

  640. And that,

  641. brothers and sisters,

  642. is what I mean

  643. by the miraculous work

  644. of God

  645. that we ought not to fail,

  646. ought not fail

  647. to see

  648. and stand

  649. in awe

  650. and worship

  651. if you truly

  652. understand

  653. the level

  654. of your sin

  655. and extent

  656. of God's holiness

  657. and that in regeneration

  658. God takes you,

  659. his enemy,

  660. takes your heart

  661. of stone,

  662. gives your heart

  663. of flesh,

  664. imputes Christ's

  665. righteousness to you,

  666. adopts you,

  667. makes you

  668. an heir

  669. of Christ's

  670. inheritance,

  671. calls you a friend,

  672. a son,

  673. or daughter,

  674. all by his grace

  675. for his glory,

  676. no amount

  677. of miraculously

  678. healed bones

  679. could ever

  680. outweigh

  681. the miraculous

  682. salvation

  683. of one soul.

  684. I love how

  685. Paul Washer

  686. puts it,

  687. he says,

  688. and I'm somewhat

  689. paraphrasing,

  690. but he says

  691. that regeneration

  692. is a greater display

  693. of God's power

  694. than his work

  695. of creation

  696. because

  697. he created

  698. the world

  699. ex nihilo,

  700. meaning out of

  701. nothing,

  702. but in regeneration

  703. he makes something

  704. holy out of a pile

  705. of depraved,

  706. sinful,

  707. God-hating humanity.

  708. So if these people

  709. in our text

  710. would have been healed

  711. but not saved,

  712. they would have

  713. simply gone to hell

  714. healthy.

  715. So Christians,

  716. be in awe

  717. and give thanks

  718. that you have

  719. to look no further

  720. than these walls

  721. of this building

  722. to see a miraculous,

  723. powerful work of God.

  724. No further

  725. than these walls.

  726. Now we see on down

  727. in our text

  728. that the apostles

  729. are arrested

  730. and put in jail

  731. and in verses 19

  732. through 21

  733. we read,

  734. but during the night

  735. an angel of the Lord

  736. opened the prison doors

  737. and brought them out

  738. and said,

  739. go and stand

  740. in the temple

  741. and speak to the people

  742. all the words

  743. of this life.

  744. And when they heard this

  745. they entered the temple

  746. at daybreak

  747. and began to teach.

  748. The angel tells them

  749. to go and speak

  750. all the words

  751. of this life,

  752. meaning go and preach

  753. the gospel.

  754. And they continue

  755. in their obedience

  756. by continuing

  757. to preach.

  758. And once again

  759. we see that they are

  760. detained and brought

  761. before the Sanhedrin again.

  762. Now the first time

  763. that they were arrested

  764. as I mentioned earlier

  765. was in chapter 4.

  766. And in chapter 4

  767. verses 1 to 3

  768. we read,

  769. and as they were

  770. speaking to the people

  771. the priest

  772. and the captains

  773. of the temple

  774. and the Sadducees

  775. came upon them

  776. greatly annoyed

  777. because they were

  778. teaching the people

  779. and proclaiming

  780. in Jesus

  781. the resurrection

  782. from the dead.

  783. And they arrested them.

  784. Did you hear that?

  785. They were greatly

  786. annoyed because

  787. they were teaching

  788. the people

  789. and proclaiming

  790. in Jesus

  791. the resurrection

  792. of the dead.

  793. The Sanhedrin

  794. was not annoyed

  795. at them for healing.

  796. They were fine

  797. with the healing.

  798. I can assure you

  799. that they were okay

  800. with no longer

  801. having dirty

  802. crippled beggars

  803. being laid

  804. at the temple gate

  805. daily.

  806. So in verse 18

  807. of chapter 4

  808. we read,

  809. so they called

  810. them and charged

  811. them not to speak

  812. or teach

  813. at all

  814. in the name

  815. of Jesus.

  816. They never

  817. charged them

  818. to stop healing.

  819. So why the

  820. hostility

  821. and the opposition

  822. to the apostles?

  823. Let's examine

  824. this in our

  825. second point

  826. which I've

  827. entitled

  828. The Root Cause

  829. of Persecution.

  830. The Root Cause

  831. of Persecution

  832. as we read

  833. in verses 17

  834. through 33

  835. of our chapter,

  836. chapter 5.

  837. But the high

  838. priest rose up

  839. and all who

  840. were with him

  841. that is the party

  842. of the Sadducees

  843. and being filled

  844. with jealousy

  845. they arrested

  846. the apostles

  847. and put them

  848. in the public

  849. prison.

  850. But during the

  851. night an angel

  852. of the Lord

  853. opened the prison

  854. doors and brought

  855. them out and said

  856. go and stand

  857. in the temple

  858. and speak to the

  859. people all the

  860. words of this life.

  861. And when they

  862. heard this

  863. they entered

  864. the temple

  865. at daybreak

  866. and began to

  867. teach.

  868. Now when the high

  869. priest came

  870. and those who

  871. were with him

  872. they called

  873. together the

  874. council,

  875. all the

  876. center of the

  877. people of

  878. Israel

  879. and sent

  880. to the

  881. prison to

  882. have them

  883. brought.

  884. But when the

  885. officers came

  886. they did not

  887. find them in

  888. the prison

  889. so they

  890. returned and

  891. reported we

  892. found the

  893. prison securely

  894. locked and the

  895. guards standing

  896. at the doors

  897. but when we

  898. opened them

  899. we found no

  900. one inside.

  901. Now when the

  902. captain of the

  903. temple and the

  904. chief priest heard

  905. these words they

  906. were greatly

  907. perplexed about

  908. them wondering

  909. what this would

  910. come to.

  911. And someone

  912. came and told

  913. them look the

  914. men whom you

  915. put in prison

  916. are standing in

  917. the temple and

  918. teaching the

  919. people.

  920. Then the

  921. captain with the

  922. officers went

  923. but not by

  924. force for they

  925. were afraid of

  926. being stoned by

  927. the people.

  928. And when they

  929. had brought

  930. them they set

  931. them before the

  932. council and the

  933. high priest and

  934. the high priest

  935. questioned them

  936. saying we

  937. strictly charged

  938. you not to

  939. teach in this

  940. name yet here

  941. you have filled

  942. Jerusalem with

  943. your teaching and

  944. you intend to

  945. bring this man's

  946. blood upon us.

  947. But Peter and

  948. the apostles

  949. answered we must

  950. obey God rather

  951. than men.

  952. The God of our

  953. fathers raised

  954. Jesus whom you

  955. killed by hanging

  956. him on a tree.

  957. God exalted

  958. him at his

  959. right hand as

  960. leader and

  961. savior to give

  962. repentance to

  963. Israel and

  964. forgiveness of

  965. sins and we

  966. are witnesses to

  967. these things and

  968. so is the Holy

  969. Spirit whom God

  970. has given to

  971. those who

  972. obey him.

  973. When they

  974. heard this they

  975. were enraged and

  976. wanted to kill

  977. them.

  978. Now I really want

  979. to take some time

  980. this morning to

  981. examine with you the

  982. root cause of

  983. persecution and we

  984. will do so first by

  985. starting with a

  986. general cause of

  987. persecution specific

  988. to our text and

  989. then by digging

  990. deeper into the

  991. issue and looking

  992. at a broader more

  993. foundational cause of

  994. persecution.

  995. So where does

  996. persecution come

  997. from and why

  998. should we Christians

  999. in a church service

  1000. in beautiful and

  1001. peaceful quiet

  1002. Dahlonega expect

  1003. persecution in our

  1004. lives.

  1005. us.

  1006. Let's start by

  1007. looking at the

  1008. general cause of

  1009. persecution in our

  1010. text.

  1011. After the apostles

  1012. are brought before

  1013. the senate and

  1014. questioned by the

  1015. Sanhedrin Peter

  1016. preaches to them and

  1017. we read in verse

  1018. 33 when they heard

  1019. this they were

  1020. enraged and wanted

  1021. to kill them.

  1022. But where does that

  1023. hatred and desire to

  1024. kill come from?

  1025. I think to better

  1026. understand this scene

  1027. it's beneficial for

1028. us to have a broader

  1029. understanding of the

  1030. historical context

  1031. politically around

  1032. this time.

1033. And so I also want

  1034. to take some time

  1035. this morning to

  1036. even navigate above

  1037. and away from our

  1038. text as we take

1039. sort of if you would

  1040. in a bird's eye

1041. view of some of the

  1042. history of the Jews.

1043. So to start let us

  1044. understand first the

  1045. Sanhedrin.

  1046. You may remember

  1047. Nathan telling us

  1048. that they were like

  1049. the Supreme Court

  1050. of Israel.

  1051. It comprised of 70

  1052. members plus the

  1053. high priest.

  1054. The members were

  1055. mostly if not

  1056. completely made up of

  1057. the two major

  1058. parties.

  1059. Those being the

  1060. Pharisees and the

  1061. Sadducees.

  1062. The Pharisees were

  1063. the more conservative

  1064. of the two.

  1065. The Sadducees were

  1066. the liberals.

1067. At this point in time

  1068. the high priest was

  1069. under Sadducean

  1070. control.

  1071. The Sadducees were

  1072. wealthy aristocrats.

  1073. They were the elite

  1074. class per se.

  1075. They also believed

  1076. only in the first

  1077. five books of the

  1078. Old Testament as

  1079. being authoritative.

  1080. They did not believe

  1081. in the resurrection

  1082. of the dead.

  1083. They did not believe

  1084. in angels.

  1085. They did not believe

  1086. in the sovereignty

1087. of God or in his

  1088. providential work

  1089. in the world.

  1090. They stressed the

  1091. libertarian free will

  1092. of man.

  1093. They denied most

  1094. things supernatural.

  1095. And we could say

  1096. that they practiced

  1097. religion more so

  1098. as political

  1099. opportunists.

  1100. So understanding

  1101. them, we read

  1102. back in verse 17

  1103. of chapter 5,

  1104. But the high priest

  1105. rose up and all

  1106. who were with him,

  1107. that is the party

  1108. of the Sadducees,

  1109. and filled with

  1110. jealousy.

  1111. They were filled

  1112. with jealousy.

  1113. But why jealousy?

  1114. What were they

  1115. jealous about?

  1116. And how does this

  1117. emotion, this

  1118. jealousy, lead to

  1119. persecution and a

  1120. desire to kill?

  1121. Well, it's interesting

  1122. to note that jealousy

  1123. throughout the Bible,

1124. when put in a list

  1125. of sinful practices,

  1126. is always paired up

  1127. with things like

  1128. strife, malice,

  1129. hate, hostility,

  1130. etc.

  1131. Always put together

  1132. side by side.

1133. And we see this both

  1134. in narrative

  1135. illustrations throughout

  1136. the Bible and also

  1137. in epistolic

  1138. exhortations.

  1139. So, for example,

  1140. a narrative

  1141. illustration, we see

  1142. in Genesis 37

  1143. that Joseph, he is

  1144. given a robe of

  1145. many colors.

  1146. And in verse 4

  1147. of Genesis 37,

  1148. we read that his

  1149. brothers hated him

  1150. and could not even

  1151. speak to him

  1152. peacefully.

1153. Then down in verse 11,

  1154. it says that they

  1155. were jealous of

  1156. Joseph, and we know

  1157. the result of that

  1158. jealousy.

  1159. In that case,

  1160. they sell their own

  1161. brother into slavery.

  1162. As far as

  1163. exhortative examples,

  1164. we see in the

  1165. epistles, here are a

  1166. few, and listen to

  1167. how they are grouped

  1168. in this list.

1169. You do not have to

  1170. turn here.

  1171. I'm going to move

  1172. through this pretty

  1173. quick.

  1174. The first one,

  1175. Galatians 5, 19

  1176. through 21, it says,

1177. Now the works of the

  1178. flesh are evident,

  1179. sexual immorality,

  1180. impurity, sensuality,

  1181. idolatry, sorcery,

  1182. enmity, strife,

  1183. jealousy, fits of

  1184. anger, rivalries,

  1185. dissensions, division,

  1186. envy, drunkenness,

  1187. orgies, and things

  1188. like these.

  1189. 2 Corinthians 12, 20.

  1190. Perhaps there may be

  1191. quarreling, jealousy,

  1192. anger, hostility,

  1193. slander, gossip,

  1194. conceit, and disorder

  1195. among you.

  1196. Also Romans 13,

  1197. 13 through 14,

  1198. and I'm going to

  1199. skip that one,

  1200. but James 3, 14

  1201. through 16.

  1202. If you would,

  1203. turn to that one

  1204. with me.

  1205. James 3, 14

  1206. through 16.

  1207. James 3, 14

  1208. through 16.

  1209. James 3, 14

  1210. 13 through 16.

  1211. We read,

1212. But if you have bitter jealousy

1213. and selfish ambition in your hearts,

1214. do not boast and be false to the truth.

1215. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above,

1216. but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

1217. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,

1218. there will be disorder in every vile practice.

  1219. Did you hear that?

  1220. Every vile practice.

  1221. Jealousy and self-ambition.

1222. This was the heart of the Sanhedrin.

1223. And what were they jealous of?

1224. Were they jealous that they were losing popularity to the apostles?

  1225. I don't think so.

1226. This was the great Sanhedrin.

  1227. They were ambitious, power-hungry,

  1228. prideful men

1229. who had the law on their side

1230. and the power to judge and control.

1231. They were not afraid or threatened by the apostles.

1232. And how can I say that?

  1233. Two reasons.

1234. The first one I would say is an educated guess.

1235. What I mean by that is,

1236. can you imagine how arrogant and prideful these men were?

  1237. Here stands before them,

  1238. the disciples of Jesus,

1239. a man whom in their minds,

1240. only days after he had been welcomed into the city of Jerusalem by the people,

1241. as if he was a king,

  1242. they, the Sanhedrin,

1243. managed to turn the entire nation against him.

  1244. Right?

1245. To the point where those who were on Monday

  1246. screaming out,

1247. Hosanna, blessed be the name of the Lord,

1248. by Friday they had changed their chance to crucify him.

1249. They, the Sanhedrin, were proud.

1250. And I think that in their minds,

1251. they took credit for all that.

1252. They managed to change the people's minds in a matter of hours.

  1253. They were proud.

  1254. They felt strong.

1255. And here before them stood mere followers of a leader that they had already done away with.

1256. They were not scared of the apostles and they were not scared of the people.

1257. Now we read in verse 26 that the captain of the police and his men were scared of the people,

  1258. but not the Sanhedrin.

1259. They were not scared of the people or the apostles.

1260. They were corrupt and smart politicians.

1261. They knew how to play the people.

1262. They knew how to get what they wanted.

1263. Now my second reason is from scripture.

1264. Because scripture tells me that they didn't even fear God.

1265. And if they didn't fear God,

1266. I don't think they feared his messengers.

1267. But I do believe that their jealousy towards the apostles stemmed from fear.

1268. Fear of the Roman Empire.

1269. Now why do I say that?

1270. This is where I want to navigate above and away from our text

1271. and quickly brush over about 600 years worth of history, of Jewish history.

  1272. So bear with me.

1273. But I'm doing this because I want you to get a better feel for what the apostles were standing up against

1274. as they stood before that council of 71 politicians.

1275. And I hope that this doesn't feel too out of the way from our text, from our context.

1276. And I promise you that I believe it has its purpose well within our text this morning.

1277. So the history of the Jews, and I'm going to try to move kind of quickly here.

1278. So you may not want to write notes.

1279. You may just want to sit and listen so you get a good picture.

1280. But if you want to write notes, it's up to you.

1281. So the history of the Jews is filled with a lot of war and violence.

1282. And starting in about 589 B.C., which is a little over 600 years before Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

1283. where we find ourselves this morning,

1284. the Babylonian Empire under King Nebuchadnezzar invaded Jerusalem,

1285. destroyed the temple, killed many Jews, and took thousands captive.

1286. We read about this in Jeremiah 52.

1287. And this is the same King Nebuchadnezzar who we read of in the book of Daniel

1288. who gets the dream of a great statue of a man who Daniel interprets for us as prophecy in the book of Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

1289. The interpretation is given in Daniel chapter 2 that the statue represents five kingdoms.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

1290. The first one, Daniel says, to King Nebuchadnezzar represents him in the Babylonian Empire.

1291. Now throughout the rest of the book of Daniel, the other kingdoms are described,

1292. and Daniel lays out with such specific detail the course of events with world powers to come.

1293. And it's just exciting to see the veracity of God's word through the course of history,

1294. as prophesied in the Old Testament, hundreds of years before any of this came to pass.

1295. Now, after being under Babylonian rule for some time,

1296. the Jews came under Persian rule after Cyrus the Great defeated the Babylonian Empire.

1297. And at the start of the intertestamental period,

1298. we find the Jews under Persian rule, which is the second of the five kingdoms.

1299. Now, in the intertestamental period, which is the 400 years between the closing of the Old Testament

1300. and the beginning of the New Testament,

1301. which is also referred to as the 400 years of silence,

1302. because God no longer spoke to his people in those 400 years,

1303. God continues, however, to sovereignly and providentially direct the course of history in the making.

1304. And so in these 400 years, the rest of the remaining empires of the prophesied dream

1305. from Daniel chapter 2 are described and identified except for the fifth one.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

1306. Now, for about 200 years, the Jews continued under Persian rule.

1307. They were allowed to rebuild the temple and had religious freedom.

1308. Around 330 BC, the Persian Empire fell to the Greek Empire,

1309. which was the third of the five kingdoms under Alexander the Great.

1310. After Alexander's death, his generals divided his empire into two,

1311. and two dynasties came out of that, the Ptolemies and the Seleucids.

1312. Judea first initially fell under Ptolemic rule for about 100 years.

1313. The Jews were economically oppressed,

1314. but had fairly good religious freedom under the Ptolemies.

1315. The Jews at this time also were exposed to Hellenism.

1316. Hellenism spread, which was Greek culture, but they still had religious freedom.

1317. Then for the next 57 years, Judea came under Seleucid rule,

  1318. under Antiochus Epiphanes,

1319. and that level of freedom drastically, drastically changed.

1320. Antiochus placed the high priest of his choosing,

1321. a man by the name of Jason, possibly a Greek,

1322. not even a Jewish man, or at the least a Greek supporter.

1323. He then issues a decree that all nations under his rule

1324. should abandon their own customs and become one people.

1325. He launched a fierce attack against the Jews,

1326. plundered Jerusalem and set many buildings on fire,

1327. had any copies of the Old Testament that he could find burned,

1328. forced Jews to eat pork,

1329. prevented them from observing the Sabbath,

1330. prevented the circumcision of boys,

1331. to the point that they would go around and check,

1332. and if any boy was found to be circumcised,

1333. the mother would be killed,

1334. the child would be killed,

1335. and the child would then be hung around the neck of the mother.

1336. Pagan worship exploded in Jerusalem at this time.

1337. Antiochus even had the title,

  1338. Theos Antiochus Theos Epiphanes,

  1339. inscribed on the currency,

1340. which translates to Antiochus, God Manifest.

1341. All this led to a 24-year war

1342. led by a Jew named Judah Maccabee.

1343. The war was called the Maccabean Revolt.

1344. The Jews won and gained their freedom.

1345. The Maccabees then established the Hasmonian dynasty in Israel.

1346. The Jews had peace that lasted for a very short time,

1347. and the Seleucid Empire once again attacked Jerusalem,

  1348. and this was around 129 B.C.

  1349. At this point,

1350. leadership of the Hasmonian dynasty had changed

1351. due to the first leader of the Hasmonian dynasty

1352. being assassinated by his own son-in-law.

1353. In a short period of time of about 37 years,

1354. the Hasmonian dynasty had four different kings.

1355. The fourth one, Alexander Gennas,

  1356. by that point,

1357. Hellenism had spread deep into the Hasmonian kingdom,

1358. which was the very thing that they fought against.

1359. King Alexander Gennas took upon himself

1360. both office of king and priest,

  1361. high priest,

1362. and the conservative political party at the time,

  1363. the Pharisees,

1364. demanded that he choose either or.

1365. The king refused and sided with

1366. and was supported by the Sadducees.

  1367. Shortly after,

1368. a disagreement during the Feast of Tabernacles

  1369. led the king,

  1370. Alexander Gennas,

  1371. to have 6,000 Jews

1372. massacred in the temple courtyard.

1373. This event was a cause to the start

  1374. of a six-year civil war

  1375. in Jerusalem,

  1376. within Judea,

1377. where 50,000 Judeans were killed.

1378. And Josephus writes that this Sadduceean king,

  1379. Alexander,

  1380. had 800 Pharisees

  1381. arrested

1382. and then had their wives and children's throats

1383. cut in front of them

1384. right before executing them as well.

  1385. After Alexander died,

1386. his wife became queen of Judea.

  1387. After she died,

  1388. her son,

  1389. Heracanus,

  1390. became the rightful heir

  1391. of the Hasmonian kingdom.

1392. And he was in favor of the Pharisees.

  1393. However,

  1394. his little brother,

  1395. Aristobulus,

  1396. who was more popular

1397. and was in favor of the Sadducees,

1398. rebelled against his big brother.

1399. In yet another civil war,

1400. Heracanus surrendered for the time being

  1401. and Aristobulus became king.

  1402. Now,

1403. when we get to around 65 to 63 BC,

1404. the fourth kingdom of Daniel's prophecy,

1405. the one that is successor to the Greek Empire,

1406. comes to the scene as the Roman Republic,

1407. soon to become the Roman Empire.

  1408. So,

1409. the Romans conquer the Greeks

  1410. and around this time,

  1411. Heracanus starts another,

  1412. another civil war,

1413. to try to get his kingdom back

  1414. from his little brother.

  1415. Now,

1416. there were so many moving pieces here

  1417. and true conspiracies

  1418. that led

1419. to this continued civil war

  1420. between these Jewish brothers.

1421. But for the sake of time,

1422. I'm going to have to skip all those details.

  1423. However,

  1424. the two brothers

1425. both ended up going to General Pompey,

  1426. a Roman military general

  1427. who just months earlier

  1428. had marched into Syria,

  1429. overpowered their kingdom

1430. and made it into a Roman province.

1431. Pompey originally sided with Aristobulus,

  1432. the younger brother,

1433. which led to a crushing defeat

  1434. of Heracanus' allies' army.

  1435. But then,

  1436. Pompey changes his mind,

1437. decides that he wants to take over Judea,

  1438. and thought that Heracanus,

  1439. the older brother,

1440. would instead be easier to control

  1441. than Aristobulus.

  1442. So,

  1443. Pompey changes sides

1444. and backs Heracanus now instead.

1445. Pompey then fights against Aristobulus,

1446. and Aristobulus surrenders to Pompey.

  1447. And in 63 BC,

  1448. Pompey marched into Jerusalem,

1449. where he met more opposition

  1450. from the Sadducees.

  1451. And after a several-month siege,

1452. which resulted in a good bit

  1453. of death and destruction,

1454. and as Josephus puts it,

  1455. 12,000 Jews were slaughtered,

1456. with only a few Roman troops being killed.

1457. The Jews lost their short-lived independence

1458. and came under the rule

  1459. of the Roman Republic.

1460. Pompey reinstalled Heracanus as high priest.

  1461. Now,

1462. within the Roman Republic at this time,

1463. there was also a lot of instability.

1464. After his victory in Jerusalem,

  1465. Pompey returns to Rome,

  1466. and the first triumvirate

  1467. was established

  1468. by three men

  1469. who became

  1470. the most powerful men

  1471. in the Republic.

1472. Pompey being one of them,

  1473. Marcus Crassus,

  1474. and Julius Caesar.

  1475. Not long after,

1476. there was a civil war

  1477. which broke out

  1478. between Caesar and Pompey.

  1479. And the whole Heracanus

  1480. and Aristobulus thing

  1481. surfaced again

  1482. because Caesar

1483. wanted to restore the kingdom

  1484. to Aristobulus,

  1485. the little brother.

  1486. Pompey's people,

  1487. knowing this,

  1488. then had Aristobulus

  1489. killed.

1490. Heracanus and his closest ally,

  1491. Antipater,

  1492. were ready to fight

  1493. with Pompey

  1494. against Caesar.

  1495. However,

  1496. when Pompey was killed,

  1497. they switched sides

  1498. and helped Caesar.

  1499. Caesar then became

  1500. the sole dictator

  1501. of the Republic.

  1502. Caesar,

  1503. thankful for the help

  1504. of Heracanus and Antipater,

  1505. allowed Heracanus

  1506. to remain high priest

  1507. and gave Antipater

  1508. rule of Judea

  1509. by making him

  1510. procurator of Judea.

1511. Now, one of Antipater's sons

  1512. is known to you

  1513. as King Herod,

  1514. who was later appointed

  1515. king of the Jews

  1516. by the Romans

  1517. and was the one

1518. who had all the young boys

  1519. murdered at the time

1520. of the birth of Jesus.

  1521. Now, Julius Caesar

  1522. is assassinated

  1523. and his adopted son

  1524. and heir,

  1525. Octavian,

  1526. joins forces

  1527. with Mark Antony

  1528. in what was called

  1529. the Second Triumvirate.

  1530. Now, not long after,

  1531. they turned

  1532. against one another

1533. in yet another civil war.

  1534. Octavian won the war

  1535. and became Augustus,

  1536. the first emperor

  1537. and founder

  1538. of the Roman Empire.

  1539. Jesus was born

1540. during the reign of Augustus.

  1541. So you can see

  1542. there was much war

  1543. surrounding

  1544. and even within Judea

  1545. up to this point

  1546. and even more

  1547. that I don't have time

  1548. to get into.

1549. So why am I telling you

  1550. all this?

  1551. A few reasons.

  1552. First, history is important.

1553. Also, I hope it gives you

  1554. a better picture,

  1555. but more importantly,

  1556. related to our text

  1557. this morning

  1558. to answer the question,

  1559. why were the Sanhedrin

1560. afraid of the Roman Empire?

  1561. Now, here's where

1562. I was going with all this.

  1563. In 63 BC,

1564. the year that the Romans

  1565. took over Judea,

  1566. perhaps the most powerful

  1567. man in Rome

  1568. was a man

1569. by the name of Cicero,

  1570. being that he was

  1571. the highest elected official

  1572. official of the Republic

1573. along with one other guy.

1574. The Romans had a law

  1575. that is referred to

1576. as the Edict of Religio Licita,

  1577. which means the Edict

  1578. of Permitted Religion.

1579. Listen to what Cicero writes

  1580. around this time

  1581. in his book entitled

  1582. On the Laws.

  1583. He writes,

  1584. and I quote,

  1585. Close quote.

  1586. Close quote.

1587. Now, a few years later,

  1588. listen to what Gaius

  1589. Macenus,

  1590. Emperor Augustus' advisor,

  1591. said to Augustus,

1592. probably within a few years

  1593. of Jesus' birth.

  1594. He tells him,

  1595. Honor the gods

  1596. in every way

  1597. according to the usage

  1598. of your ancestors

  1599. and compel others

  1600. to worship them.

  1601. Hate and punish

  1602. those who introduce

  1603. strange gods,

1604. not only for the sake

  1605. of the gods,

  1606. but because those

  1607. who introduce

  1608. new gods

  1609. engage a multitude

  1610. of persons

  1611. in foreign laws

  1612. and customs.

  1613. From hence

  1614. arise unions

  1615. bound by oaths

  1616. and confederacies

  1617. and associations.

  1618. Things dangerous

  1619. to a monarchy.

  1620. Close quote.

1621. Now, let me wrap up

1622. this bird's eye view thing

1623. and show you from Scripture

  1624. why I've said

  1625. what I've said.

1626. Turn to John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  1627. for me.

  1628. This is a text

  1629. that Pastor Vodibach

  1630. pointed out for me

  1631. and we'll show you

1632. how all of this history

  1633. comes together

  1634. in our text

  1635. in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1636. this morning.

  1637. John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  1638. This is right after

  1639. the raising of Lazarus

  1640. and look at

  1641. verse 45

  1642. verses 45

  1643. through 48.

  1644. So,

  1645. John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  1646. starting in verse 45

  1647. we read

  1648. Many of the Jews

  1649. therefore

  1650. who had come

  1651. with Mary

  1652. and had seen

  1653. what he did

  1654. believed in him.

  1655. But some of them

  1656. went to the Pharisees

  1657. and told them

  1658. what Jesus had done.

  1659. So the chief priests

  1660. and the Pharisees

  1661. gathered the council

  1662. and said

1663. what are we to do?

  1664. For this man

  1665. performs many signs.

  1666. If we let him

  1667. go on like this

  1668. everyone will believe

  1669. in him

  1670. and the Romans

  1671. will come

  1672. and take away

  1673. both our place

  1674. and our nation.

  1675. Do you see that?

  1676. Jesus

  1677. and then the apostles

  1678. were preaching

  1679. Christianity

  1680. a new religion

  1681. that was not

  1682. sanctioned

  1683. and officially

  1684. brought in

  1685. by Rome.

  1686. And because Rome

  1687. saw new religions

1688. as the rise of unions

  1689. bound by oaths

  1690. and confederacies

  1691. and associations

  1692. things dangerous

  1693. to a monarchy

  1694. the great Sanhedrin

  1695. wealthy

  1696. and power hungry

  1697. was scared

  1698. that the preaching

  1699. of a new religion

  1700. would bring about

  1701. the wrath

  1702. not of God

1703. but of the Roman Empire

  1704. and take their power

  1705. and wealth

  1706. away from them.

  1707. Brothers

  1708. the love of money

  1709. is a root

  1710. of all kinds

  1711. of evil

  1712. but the root

  1713. of all kinds

  1714. of evil

  1715. including the root

  1716. of persecution

  1717. is idolatry

  1718. a violation

  1719. of the first

  1720. and second commandments.

  1721. The apostles

  1722. here were preaching

  1723. against the Sanhedrin

  1724. sin

  1725. so you now have

  1726. I hope

  1727. you now have

  1728. a better picture

  1729. of what they were

  1730. standing up against.

  1731. They all knew

  1732. the Roman stance

  1733. on their religion

  1734. very well.

  1735. The apostles

  1736. likely knew

  1737. very well

  1738. that this was

  1739. what they were

  1740. standing up against.

  1741. They knew the risk.

  1742. These men

  1743. had crucified

  1744. their Lord

  1745. out of their own

  1746. greed and idolatry

  1747. and even so much

  1748. blood

  1749. had been spilled

  1750. in the very ground

  1751. upon which they

  1752. stood to be tried

  1753. yet they trusted

  1754. and were obedient

  1755. and they preached

  1756. the truth

  1757. in love

  1758. and they put

  1759. the mirror

  1760. of God's law

  1761. in front

  1762. of the court's

  1763. face

  1764. and called

  1765. them out

  1766. on their sin.

  1767. Peter says

  1768. Jesus

  1769. whom you killed

  1770. and the Sanhedrin

  1771. hiding their guilt

  1772. say

  1773. you intend

  1774. to bring

  1775. this man's

  1776. blood

  1777. upon us.

  1778. For those of you

  1779. who don't know

  1780. I used to be

  1781. a police

  1782. canine officer

  1783. I had an awesome

  1784. mean looking

  1785. beautiful

  1786. German shepherd

  1787. and when we

  1788. did bite training

  1789. we always

  1790. trained the dogs

  1791. that if the

  1792. handler was

  1793. attacked

  1794. they were to

  1795. attack back

  1796. and that without

  1797. even the need

  1798. of a command

  1799. to bite

  1800. that's how they

  1801. were trained

  1802. it was partly

  1803. out of instinct

  1804. if the dog

  1805. sees his master

  1806. attacked

  1807. he will attack

  1808. the attacker

  1809. and that's kind

  1810. of what we see

  1811. with persecution

  1812. because

  1813. unregenerate

  1814. people

  1815. are slaves

  1816. to their

  1817. sin

  1818. their sin

  1819. is their

  1820. master

  1821. and just

  1822. like if you

  1823. mess with a

  1824. dog's master

  1825. you are likely

  1826. to get bit

  1827. if you mess

  1828. with someone's

  1829. sin

  1830. you are likely

  1831. to be

  1832. persecuted

  1833. and so that

  1834. brothers and

  1835. sisters

  1836. is the root

  1837. cause

  1838. of persecution

  1839. and the apostles

  1840. were obedient

  1841. godliness

  1842. was manifested

  1843. in that obedience

  1844. and persecution

  1845. necessarily

  1846. followed

  1847. for persecution

  1848. was birthed

  1849. out of an

  1850. idolatrous

  1851. heart

  1852. enslaved to

  1853. sin

  1854. and nothing

  1855. has changed

  1856. almost 2,000

  1857. years later

  1858. if you preach

  1859. the gospel

  1860. people may still

  1861. want to kill you

  1862. and while they

  1863. don't have the fear

  1864. of losing everything

  1865. to the roman empire

  1866. they do fear the

  1867. police

  1868. and losing

  1869. everything

  1870. by going to

  1871. prison

  1872. but what has

  1873. changed

  1874. is in the

  1875. political realm

  1876. the lord has

  1877. made our

  1878. field

  1879. so much

  1880. easier

  1881. to labor

  1882. in

  1883. he has

  1884. provided

  1885. so much

  1886. protection

  1887. for his

  1888. workers

  1889. in the

  1890. institution

  1891. of our

  1892. government

  1893. we can't

  1894. be flogged

  1895. or killed

  1896. for preaching

  1897. according to

  1898. the law

  1899. and we even

  1900. have the law

  1901. on our side

  1902. when it comes

  1903. to preaching

  1904. in our

  1905. right to

  1906. freedom

  1907. of speech

  1908. so our

  1909. field is

  1910. easier to

  1911. labor in

  1912. yet the

  1913. lord's

  1914. words

  1915. still ring

  1916. true

  1917. that the

  1918. harvest is

  1919. plentiful

  1920. but the

  1921. laborers

  1922. are few

  1923. now

  1924. kind of

  1925. out of

  1926. time

  1927. out of

  1928. time

  1929. so i

  1930. will leave

  1931. you with

  1932. this

  1933. i urge

  1934. all of

  1935. you

  1936. to examine

  1937. your hearts

  1938. we should

  1939. be bold

  1940. in our

  1941. proclamation

  1942. of the gospel

  1943. for our

  1944. field to

  1945. labor in

  1946. it's not a

  1947. particularly

  1948. painstakingly

  1949. arduous one

  1950. to labor

  1951. in

  1952. i agree

  1953. with what

  1954. nathan

  1955. said that

  1956. at the

  1957. very least

  1958. we should

  1959. be experiencing

  1960. persecution

  1961. in the

  1962. form of

  1963. persecution

  1964. of our

  1965. ego

  1966. but i

  1967. think nathan

  1968. would also

  1969. agree with

  1970. me that

  1971. your ego

  1972. should not

  1973. be primarily

  1974. persecuted by

  1975. others but

  1976. should be

  1977. primarily first

  1978. and foremost

  1979. persecuted by

  1980. yourselves

  1981. as you renew

  1982. your minds

  1983. as you die

  1984. to yourself

  1985. as you pick

  1986. up your cross

  1987. daily to

  1988. follow him

  1989. every one of

  1990. us christians

  1991. is called

  1992. to live

  1993. godly

  1994. lives

  1995. and to

  1996. boldly

  1997. proclaim

  1998. that which

  1999. we which

  2000. we have

  2001. been entrusted

  2002. with and

  2003. made ambassadors

  2004. of and if

  2005. we are obedient

  2006. to this call

  2007. then persecution

  2008. will in some

  2009. way necessarily

  2010. follow but do

  2011. understand that

  2012. persecution is

  2013. not the goal it

  2014. is simply a

  2015. byproduct of

  2016. godliness

  2017. may we all

  2018. be found

  2019. worthy to

  2020. suffer for

  2021. him who

  2022. suffered all

  2023. on our

  2024. behalf and

  2025. may we all

  2026. live our

  2027. lives without

  2028. wasting them

  2029. that is my

  2030. prayer this

  2031. morning and

  2032. i close with

  2033. this quote

  2034. from john

  2035. jawit

  2036. a british

  2037. preacher from

  2038. the early

  2039. 1900s

  2040. he says

  2041. it is

  2042. possible to

  2043. evade a

  2044. multitude of

  2045. sorrows by

  2046. the cultivation

  2047. of an

  2048. insignificant

  2049. life

  2050. indeed if

  2051. it be a

  2052. man's ambition

  2053. to avoid the

  2054. troubles of

  2055. life the

  2056. recipe is

  2057. perfectly

  2058. simple

  2059. let him

  2060. shed his

  2061. ambitions in

  2062. every direction

  2063. let him cut

  2064. the wings of

  2065. every soaring

  2066. purpose and

  2067. let him

  2068. assiduously

  2069. cultivate a

  2070. little life

  2071. with the

  2072. fewest

  2073. correspondences

  2074. and relations

  2075. by this means

  2076. a whole

  2077. continent of

  2078. afflictions will

  2079. be escaped and

  2080. will remain

  2081. unknown

  2082. but if we

  2083. follow the

  2084. way of

  2085. sacrificial life

  2086. and service

  2087. it may bring

  2088. us into a

  2089. fiery furnace

  2090. of suffering

  2091. but in the

  2092. midst of the

  2093. fire there

  2094. shall be one

  2095. like unto

  2096. the son of

  2097. God

  2098. let's pray
