  1. Good morning, everyone. I wish that I could say that Nathan not being here today is the reason that I'm up here.

  2. ! But that wouldn't be a sufficient excuse per se. I asked Nathan a couple months ago if he would allow me the privilege of preaching the Word of God again.

  3. And as the week drew near, work was insanely busy. And even as the days drew near to today, I feared quite a bit about my preparation, it not being sufficient.

  4. And I was really just afraid. So I had to go to Nathan and just seek counsel from him about this.

  5. And he just continued to encourage me to rest on the Lord and lean on the Lord, because ultimately every man that comes up here in the pulpit has to find a sufficiency in Christ to preach his Word.

  6. And my hope is that you'll bear witness of that today. And my hope is that I will bear witness of that today as well.

  7. Let me go ahead and just open us up in prayer and we'll dive into the Word together.

  8. Father, we praise you for this morning bringing together your children, brothers, sisters, families, husbands, and wives to hear the preaching of your Word.

  9. I pray that that would happen today, that it would be heard in this building.

  10. And I pray that it would also be heard in all of the other congregations that are gathering on this Sunday morning, Lord.

  11. I pray that this would be true.

  12. I pray that you would have us all understand what it means to see your young and early church and how that applies to us today,

  13. even as your church continues to grow and spread throughout all of the world.

  14. So let that be true today, Lord.

  15. And we ask this in your name, Christ. Amen.

  16. So open up with me to Acts.

  17. As most of you know, we have been going through the book of Acts since the beginning of the year.

  18. And this book can be, the title of the book can be somewhat misleading.

  19. For example, in my version it says, The Acts of the Apostles.

  20. It is true that this is a story, it's a written account written by Luke,

  21. about what the apostles were doing after the ascension of Jesus Christ.

  22. But I think, and others have mentioned this, that it's sufficient to say that this was the act of the Holy Spirit.

  23. After Christ ascended, he said that he was going to send a helper.

  24. And so only a couple of days later, when the disciples are gathering together, he sends the Holy Spirit to them.

  25. And they begin proclaiming the word of God all throughout Jerusalem and eventually into Samaria.

  26. And we're going to bear witnesses of that as you continue to come on Sundays,

  27. as you continue to meet on Wednesday nights to discuss these things.

  28. You're going to see that take place and unfold.

  29. And that's going to lead us all the way up to where we are today.

  30. Two thousand years later, you've all heard the gospel of Jesus Christ preached and proclaimed to you in some way or another.

  31. So it's incredible to see that continuation of the church after this book concludes.

  32. It's not the Acts of the Apostles, it is the Acts of the Spirit that's done that.

  33. So here we are in Acts 6.1.

  34. We kind of get to see a young child beginning to walk for the first time is how I like to imagine this.

  35. It's the growth of the church or the organization of the church.

  36. It is like a living, breathing organism, as I've heard it described.

  37. It becomes mature.

  38. It's understanding some of its faults and failures, how it can fine-tune itself by listening to the Spirit to serve others

  39. and to preach the gospel louder and throughout other places.

  40. And so what we're going to witness here in this text is a division that arises amongst the early church in Jerusalem

  41. and how the Spirit allows them to approach that and reconcile it.

  42. So read with me in Acts 6.1.

  43. Now at this time, while the disciples were increasing in number,

  44. a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Jews

  45. because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.

  46. So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said,

  47. It is not desirable for us to neglect the Word of God in order to serve tables.

  48. Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation,

  49. full of the Spirit and of wisdom,

  50. whom we may be put in charge of this task.

  51. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.

  52. The statement found approval with the whole congregation,

  53. and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

  54. and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolás,

  55. a proselyte from Antioch.

  56. And these they brought before the apostles,

  57. and after praying, they laid their hands on them.

  58. The Word of God kept on spreading,

  59. and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem,

  60. and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

  61. So I want to just lay out and brief the characters that you see here in this part.

  62. And we've got the disciples.

  63. It's referring to all the Jews that have now become Christians in Jerusalem.

  64. But we see two distinctions of Jews.

  65. We see the Hellenistic Jews mentioned here and the native Hebrews.

  66. Something I learned several weeks ago in Cog

  67. was that these Hellenists were actually from the Despora,

  68. which is the region outside of Jerusalem.

  69. They had come to Jerusalem during Pentecost.

  70. And at the time, they were heavily influenced by Greeks.

  71. They all spoke Greek.

  72. They partook in their culture.

  73. They partook in their art.

  74. All of these things that were very foreign to the native Hebrews.

  75. And then, other characters that we see,

  76. we've got the Twelve Apostles.

  77. So when you see the Twelve, it's referencing the Twelve Apostles.

  78. And then eventually, the Seven Appointed Deacons.

  79. And I'll get into that a little bit more.

  80. As I continue through this,

  81. I'm going to give you just kind of a line-by-line,

  82. verse-by-verse exposition.

  83. That's how a lot of us like to do it here.

  84. And there are six observances that I want you to make

  85. as I'm going through this.

  86. And you can write these down.

  87. I'm not going to be going back and forth to these.

  88. I just really want you to listen to the text

  89. and find these as I'm preaching on it.

  90. But these six observations

  91. are the success of the church thus far.

  92. So what have we seen?

  93. What successes in the church have we seen

  94. up to this point in Acts 6.1?

  95. What I call Satan's third attack on the church.

  96. Number three, the obedience of the apostles.

  97. Number four, the spirit solution.

  98. Five, the call to service.

  99. And then six, the result.

  100. And I'll go ahead and give that one away.

  101. But it's a reconciled and powerful church

  102. that we're going to see in Acts 6.7.

  103. So as we go into Acts 6.1,

  104. we see at this time,

  105. while the disciples were increasing in number,

  106. we believe this time is in a reference

  107. to only a couple of months

  108. since the ascension of Jesus Christ.

  109. When it says increasing in number,

  110. the word that they actually use for that is plethora.

  111. And that's obviously where we get the word plethora.

  112. It means a great many or a multitude of people.

  113. And the estimates of this are upwards of 20,000 people.

  114. Some even say that it could be up to 30,000 individuals

  115. that have come to know Christ

  116. through the preaching of the apostles

  117. and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

  118. And it says,

  119. A complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews

  120. against the native Jews

  121. because their widows were being overlooked in the daily food.

  122. This complaint that arises,

  123. this is an attack by Satan,

  124. is what I believe it to be,

  125. because we've seen that already happen

  126. a couple of times in the church.

  127. John's preached on it.

  128. Nathan has preached on it.

  129. We saw the persecution of John and Peter

  130. and later the other apostles when they were beat.

  131. That's what I believe to be the first.

  132. Then we see sin that divides the church and the giving.

  133. We see Ananias and Sapphira,

  134. how they're struck down by God.

  135. And then eventually we see this,

  136. this dysfunction,

  137. this disunity coming up in the church.

  138. And this is all an attempt by Satan

  139. to stop the growth of the church.

  140. That's what he was always trying to do.

  141. He was always trying to stop the Word of God

  142. from being spoken.

  143. In order to do this,

  144. he tried to put Jesus Christ up on a cross,

  145. but that was a plan all along,

  146. is that he had to go to the cross.

  147. He had to be crucified.

  148. He had to bear the wrath of God.

  149. Satan thinks that it's his plan,

  150. but it wasn't,

  151. hence the reason he rose from the dead.

  152. So this is just another effort.

  153. Now that Christ has ascended,

  154. he says to himself,

  155. how can I divide this church?

  156. How can I break it up?

  157. How can I make them less powerful than they are?

  158. And we're going to see that result,

  159. what happens from that.

  160. On the part of the Hellenistic Jews

  161. against the native Hebrews,

  162. now as I said,

  163. prior to knowing Christ,

  164. these Hellenists were more Greek

  165. than they were Jews.

  166. Obviously this caused a great amount of division

  167. when they came back to Jerusalem

  168. to worship during Pentecost.

  169. They tried to bring all of these foreign,

  170. just foreign cultures with them.

  171. So there were already divisions

  172. between these Jews

  173. prior to them being unified in Christ.

  174. As a matter of fact,

  175. the Hellenists were known

  176. for wanting to translate

  177. the Old Testament into Greek.

  178. And the native Hebrews said,

  179. no, this is specifically written in Hebrew.

  180. This is what it should be.

  181. This is what it should remain.

  182. But that's how much they wanted

  183. to somewhat be a part

  184. of the Jewish culture.

  185. And there was division because of that.

  186. So this is why I believe

  187. Satan chose these two groups of people

  188. originally to attack and divide

  189. because they already had

  190. dysfunction amongst them

  191. prior to coming to know the Lord.

  192. So he simply says,

  193. I'm just going to wedge myself back in there

  194. and I'm going to divide them once again.

  195. That didn't work despite his best efforts.

  196. They complained.

  197. They griped.

  198. They said,

  199. our widows are being overlooked

  200. in the daily serving of food.

  201. And I thought to myself,

  202. I said, well, how is that happening?

  203. I just tried to put myself

  204. in the shoes of the apostles

  205. or the people complaining.

  206. And I read some things,

  207. listened to things,

  208. couldn't really understand

  209. about how this conflict

  210. is coming about.

  211. How were people being overlooked?

  212. And you would say,

  213. well, there's 12 apostles,

  214. there's 20,000 people.

  215. Obviously, it'd be pretty easy

  216. to overlook a group of people.

  217. But we can see up to this point

  218. that thousands of people

  219. are being served

  220. by the hands of the apostles.

  221. And this is just a theory of my own,

  222. so you can take it for what it is.

  223. But it's quite possible

  224. that in their gatherings,

  225. in the servings of the tables,

  226. they would have the men

  227. come up and get the food

  228. that was sufficient for their families,

  229. that was sufficient for their wives,

  230. that was sufficient for their children.

  231. And the apostles would hand them out to them.

  232. They'd hand them out

  233. to all the men that came up.

  234. Well, if you've got a group of widows,

  235. that's the point,

  236. is they don't have any young men

  237. or any men

  238. that are able to come up

  239. and represent them.

  240. So that's a possibility.

  241. That is a theory

  242. of the reason why

  243. they could have been overlooked.

  244. And the fact is

  245. that they spoke Greek,

  246. so it's not like they could come up

  247. and tell the Aramaics,

  248. the ones who spoke Aramaic,

  249. that they were being neglected,

  250. that they were not having food,

  251. et cetera,

  252. or that they needed food.

  253. So, hence they're overlooked.

  254. As some of you may remember,

  255. I think John mentioned this last week,

  256. or maybe a couple weeks earlier

  257. from someone else,

  258. but one of the duties

  259. of the Christian church

  260. that we're going to see

  261. as it grows

  262. is James says this

  263. in James 1.27.

  264. He says,

  265. Pure and undefiled religion

  266. in the sight of our God and Father

  267. is this,

  268. to visit orphans and widows

  269. in their distress.

  270. And so that's a very simple duty.

  271. I think the apostles knew this,

  272. that it was their duty

  273. to be serving widows

  274. who could not be served

  275. in the home by men.

  276. But when they're being neglected,

  277. obviously the church is failing

  278. to perform one of its functions.

  279. So when they came together

  280. and complained

  281. to the apostles,

  282. the apostles said to them,

  283. they summoned the congregation

  284. and the disciples

  285. and said,

  286. It is not desirable

  287. for us to neglect

  288. the word of God

  289. in order to serve tables.

  290. And that word that they use

  291. for serve

  292. is diakone.

  293. And I'm going to explain that

  294. a little bit later.

  295. But that means to serve

  296. or to be a servant of.

  297. That's where we eventually

  298. get the word deacon from.

  299. And that's something

  300. I'm going to be talking about

  301. a little bit today.

  302. But when I first read this,

  303. and it says,

  304. It is not desirable

  305. for us to neglect

  306. the word of God

  307. in order to serve tables.

  308. I said to myself,

  309. Who are you as the apostles

  310. who think that you're too high

  311. to serve the low,

  312. to serve the widows,

  313. to serve the needy?

  314. That's where my flesh went.

  315. I've learned

  316. from constantly reading scripture

  317. that my flesh

  318. is much more critical

  319. than my spirit is

  320. because it wants to find

  321. a lot of faults

  322. in the word of God.

  323. So,

  324. when I asked myself though,

  325. when I prayed

  326. and I said,

  327. What do they mean by this?

  328. They're simply saying

  329. that it is their duty.

  330. They were ordained

  331. to preach

  332. and minister

  333. the word of God.

  334. That up to this point,

  335. they were able to serve

  336. maybe 10,

  337. maybe 15,000 people,

  338. but eventually

  339. it became too many

  340. to serve on a weekly basis.

  341. So they had to choose

  342. one or the other.

  343. They said,

  344. We can either continue

  345. preaching the word of God

  346. or we can serve the tables.

  347. They said,

  348. It is not desirable

  349. for us to neglect

  350. the word of God

  351. in order to serve tables.

  352. And what I mean

  353. by that ordination

  354. that they have,

  355. that duty that they had

  356. to preach the word of God,

  357. we see it a couple of times.

  358. We see it at the very beginning

  359. of Acts.

  360. And I want you guys

  361. to turn here with me.

  362. Turn to Acts 1.

  363. 1.

  364. I'm going to read through 2

  365. and then I'm going to skip

  366. to verse 8.

  367. It says,

  368. Verse 8,

  369. And that's his direct decree

  370. to the apostles,

  371. that they would be witnesses

  372. of the word of God

  373. and what they've witnessed

  374. in Jesus Christ

  375. throughout Jerusalem

  376. and the rest of the world.

  377. It's also,

  378. I'm not going to make you turn here,

  379. but it's also an echo

  380. of what Luke also recorded

  381. in Luke 24, 44 through 48.

  382. What we see in Matthew,

  383. Matthew 28, 18 through 20.

  384. All of you are familiar

  385. with the Great Commission.

  386. This is a parallel text

  387. of where he's commissioning them

  388. to go out

  389. and be ministers of the word.

  390. But someone pointed this out

  391. to me recently.

  392. It's not just,

  393. this commission was not just

  394. found here in the New Testament.

  395. It was not just found

  396. in the Gospels.

  397. It was not just found in Acts.

  398. But it's also a reference

  399. to something in the Old Testament.

  400. St. Augustine said

  401. that the new is the old concealed

  402. and the old is the new revealed.

  403. That means that what we see

  404. in the Old Testament

  405. is a concealing

  406. of what we now see

  407. in the New Testament

  408. and vice versa.

  409. What we see in the New Testament

  410. is revealed to us

  411. of what was spoken of

  412. in the Old Testament.

  413. So turn with me

  414. to Numbers 8, 14.

  415. I'll give you all

  416. some time to get there.

  417. I'm going to read through verse 22.

  418. And I want you to see

  419. the parallels between

  420. the Jesus ordaining

  421. and blessing

  422. the original apostles

  423. and what we see

  424. the Lord's commandment

  425. for the Levites

  426. here in the early church.

  427. If you will.

  428. Thus you shall separate

  429. the Levites

  430. from among the sons of Israel

  431. and the Levites

  432. shall be mine.

  433. Then after that

  434. the Levites

  435. may go

  436. and to serve

  437. the tent of meeting.

  438. But you shall cleanse them

  439. and present them

  440. as a way of offering

  441. for they are wholly

  442. given to me

  443. from among the sons

  444. of Israel.

  445. I have taken them

  446. for myself

  447. instead of every first issue

  448. of the womb.

  449. The firstborn

  450. of all the sons of Israel.

  451. For every firstborn

  452. among the sons of Israel

  453. is mine

  454. among the men

  455. and among the animals

  456. and on the day

  457. that I struck down

  458. all the firstborn

  459. in the land of Egypt

  460. I sanctified them

  461. for myself

  462. but I have taken

  463. the Levites

  464. instead of every firstborn

  465. among the sons of Israel.

  466. I have given

  467. the Levites

  468. as a gift to Aaron

  469. and to his sons

  470. from among the sons

  471. of Israel

  472. to perform the service

  473. of the sons of Israel

  474. at the tent of meeting

  475. and to make atonement

  476. on behalf

  477. of the sons of Israel

  478. so that there will be

  479. no plague

  480. among the sons of Israel

  481. by their coming near

  482. to the sanctuary.

  483. Thus did Moses

  484. and Aaron

  485. and all the congregation

  486. of the sons

  487. of Israel

  488. to the Levites

  489. according to all

  490. that the Lord

  491. had commanded Moses

  492. concerning the Levites

  493. so the sons of Israel

  494. did to them.

  495. The Levites too

  496. purified themselves

  497. from sin

  498. and washed their clothes

  499. and Aaron presented them

  500. as a way of offering

  501. before the Lord.

  502. Aaron also made atonement

  503. for them

  504. to cleanse them.

  505. Then after the Levites

  506. went in to perform

  507. their service

  508. in the tent of meeting

  509. before Aaron

  510. and before his sons

  511. just as the Lord

  512. had commanded Moses

  513. concerning the Levites

  514. so they did to them.

  515. This is where he sets aside

  516. people,

  517. priests,

  518. holy priests

  519. to take care

  520. of the sacrifices

  521. that constantly

  522. had to be made

  523. for the sins of Israel

  524. but this is also

  525. the people

  526. that he chose

  527. to minister

  528. the word of God

  529. to his people

  530. and eventually

  531. God himself

  532. ordains the prophets

  533. to do the same

  534. to speak about

  535. the coming

  536. of the Christ.

  537. These are the men

  538. that are set aside

  539. and it's the same

  540. for the apostles

  541. in this era

  542. that they were set aside

  543. to minister

  544. and to preach

  545. the word of God

  546. and they said that.

  547. We can't neglect

  548. the word of God.

  549. This is of the utmost importance.

  550. So their solution

  551. is therefore brethren

  552. select from among you

  553. seven men

  554. of good reputation

  555. full of the spirit

  556. and of wisdom

  557. whom we may put

  558. in charge

  559. of the task.

  560. And this goes back

  561. to that word

  562. that I used

  563. for serve

  564. earlier.

  565. It's diakone.

  566. It means to serve.

  567. It means a servant of.

  568. That's what they're looking for.

  569. They're looking for servants.

  570. People who know

  571. how to serve

  572. these widows

  573. that are being neglected.

  574. So there are

  575. six qualifications

  576. that I could come out of

  577. or that I could pull

  578. out of this text.

  579. for these men.

  580. The original deacons.

  581. They say

  582. select from among you.

  583. So that means

  584. the people

  585. that were bringing

  586. the complaints to them

  587. they're saying

  588. well what we want you to do

  589. is we want you guys

  590. to get together

  591. talk to one another

  592. nominate

  593. seven individuals

  594. that you believe

  595. can best serve you.

  596. The reason

  597. they had to be among them

  598. is because they spoke

  599. their language

  600. they knew their culture

  601. they knew what

  602. their needs were

  603. which even obviously

  604. the apostles

  605. had a hard time

  606. doing that.

  607. They were still men

  608. nonetheless

  609. but it was best

  610. that they found

  611. someone who was

  612. similar to them

  613. people within

  614. their community.

  615. Another qualification

  616. and I want you all

  617. to take this loosely

  618. and I'll explain why

  619. is he says

  620. seven men.

  621. In this time

  622. they were looking

  623. for men

  624. to serve the widows.

  625. They didn't have

  626. the husbands

  627. as I mentioned

  628. they didn't have

  629. the sons

  630. so they needed

  631. men to step up

  632. and serve these widows

  633. but that doesn't

  634. necessarily mean

  635. that deacons

  636. from this day forward

  637. had to be men

  638. and there is

  639. lots of evidence

  640. for that in the

  641. New Testament.

  642. We see that with Phoebe

  643. I think in

  644. Romans 16.1

  645. we also see

  646. a description

  647. of what a deacon

  648. should be

  649. what they should look like

  650. and I'm going to go to there

  651. I'm going to have everybody

  652. go to there

  653. in a little bit

  654. that's in 1 Timothy

  655. so I think

  656. that there is

  657. sufficient evidence

  658. to say that

  659. women can also

  660. be deacons

  661. in many cases

  662. and the more

  663. struggles that the church

  664. has

  665. as it's growing

  666. you're going to find

  667. things that

  668. really only women

  669. can confront

  670. and serve

  671. they can serve

  672. a lot better

  673. in some ways

  674. to men

  675. you'll notice here

  676. that we don't have

  677. men throwing

  678. baby showers

  679. for people

  680. it's because

  681. women are best

  682. qualified for

  683. something like that

  684. they're better

  685. to serve

  686. in that role

  687. another

  688. observation is

  689. they had to be

  690. of good reputation

  691. and here I want you

  692. to go ahead

  693. and turn

  694. to 1 Timothy 3

  695. I'm going to start us

  696. off in 7

  697. where Paul

  698. is actually

  699. telling Timothy

  700. what the leaders

  701. and the elders

  702. and the deacons

  703. need to look like

  704. in the church

  705. so in verse 7

  706. he's actually

  707. describing

  708. the overseers

  709. kind of the elders

  710. however

  711. he uses

  712. the same word

  713. here

  714. that Luke uses

  715. for good reputation

  716. he says in verse 7

  717. and I'm going to read

  718. all the way through 13

  719. and he must have

  720. a good reputation

  721. with those

  722. outside the church

  723. so that he will not

  724. fall into reproach

  725. and the snare

  726. of the devil

  727. deacons likewise

  728. must be then

  729. of dignity

  730. not double tongued

  731. or addicted

  732. to much wine

  733. or fond of

  734. sordid gain

  735. but holding to

  736. the mystery of the faith

  737. with a clear conscience

  738. these men must also

  739. first be tested

  740. then let them

  741. serve as deacons

  742. if they are

  743. beyond reproach

  744. women

  745. must likewise

  746. be dignified

  747. not malicious

  748. gossips

  749. but temperate

  750. faithful

  751. in all things

  752. deacons must be

  753. husbands of only one wife

  754. and good managers

  755. of their children

  756. and their households

  757. for those who have

  758. served well as deacons

  759. obtain for themselves

  760. a high standing

  761. and great confidence

  762. in the faith

  763. that is in Christ Jesus

  764. so we see there

  765. what Paul lays out

  766. is the specific

  767. qualifications

  768. of the deacons

  769. but he's only going off

  770. of what he saw

  771. in the original church

  772. the early church

  773. that was set aside

  774. by the twelve apostles

  775. the next qualification

  776. the fifth one

  777. is that they must be

  778. full of the spirit

  779. they must be proven

  780. to have the Holy Spirit

  781. within them

  782. and third

  783. fifthly

  784. sorry

  785. yeah fifth

  786. and of wisdom

  787. they must have wisdom

  788. and they must also

  789. be leaders

  790. and I pull that from

  791. that they may be

  792. put in charge

  793. of this task

  794. they weren't looking

  795. for someone

  796. who just simply

  797. had a good reputation

  798. they weren't looking

  799. for just Greeks

  800. for Hellenist Jews

  801. they were looking

  802. for men

  803. who could step up

  804. as leaders

  805. to serve the church

  806. and then they go back

  807. to what they originally said

  808. the apostles do

  809. they said

  810. but we will devote

  811. ourselves to prayer

  812. and to the ministry

  813. of the word

  814. this I believe

  815. to be the crux

  816. of this portion

  817. of the text

  818. or of this text

  819. is that the apostles

  820. are remaining obedient

  821. to what they were

  822. originally called to do

  823. and they're not deviating

  824. from that

  825. despite the dysfunction

  826. that they're seeing

  827. in the church

  828. the two things

  829. that they mention here

  830. are prayer

  831. and the ministry

  832. of the word

  833. Jesus prays upwards

  834. of or at least

  835. what we see recorded

  836. in the gospels

  837. upwards of 30 times

  838. throughout his ministry

  839. that's not including

  840. parallel texts

  841. so that's single

  842. accounts of what we have

  843. of Jesus praying

  844. and we know that

  845. John says

  846. he didn't even record

  847. he didn't record

  848. anywhere near

  849. what he witnessed

  850. Jesus do

  851. in his three years

  852. of ministry with him

  853. so there's no telling

  854. how many times

  855. Jesus prayed it daily

  856. by himself

  857. and with others

  858. that was constant

  859. and so the apostles

  860. eleven of which

  861. are the original

  862. disciples of Jesus Christ

  863. they're just simply

  864. copying that

  865. they're mimicking that

  866. because they know

  867. that it has been fruitful

  868. they know that they

  869. need to call upon

  870. the Lord

  871. so they do that

  872. they say we can't

  873. neglect that

  874. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  875. says this about prayer

  876. he says

  877. prayer is beyond

  878. any question

  879. of the highest

  880. activity of the

  881. human soul

  882. man is at his

  883. greatest and highest

  884. when upon his knees

  885. he comes face to face

  886. with God

  887. that's absolutely

  888. what the apostles

  889. of this time

  890. understood

  891. that everything

  892. that was happening

  893. within the church

  894. in Jerusalem

  895. was not on their

  896. own accord

  897. it was by them

  898. calling out to God

  899. saying we want this

  900. to happen

  901. we know that you

  902. desire for this

  903. to happen

  904. so please make it

  905. happen

  906. and then we see

  907. the ministry of the

  908. word

  909. or preaching

  910. that's how that can

  911. be also translated

  912. again

  913. this is simply

  914. mimicking what

  915. Jesus Christ did

  916. if you think that

  917. these were the first

  918. preachers

  919. of the word

  920. then you're wrong

  921. turn with me to

  922. Matthew 23

  923. or Matthew 4

  924. yeah

  925. Matthew 4

  926. I'm going to start

  927. in verse 23

  928. and read through

  929. verse

  930. chapter 5

  931. verse 2

  932. Jesus was going

  933. throughout all

  934. Galilee

  935. teaching in their

  936. synagogues

  937. and proclaiming

  938. the gospel

  939. of the kingdom

  940. and healing

  941. every kind of

  942. disease

  943. and every kind

  944. of sickness

  945. among the people

  946. the news about him

  947. spread throughout

  948. all Syria

  949. and they brought

  950. to him

  951. all who were ill

  952. those suffering

  953. with various diseases

  954. and pains

  955. demonics

  956. epiletics

  957. paralytics

  958. and he healed

  959. them

  960. large crowds

  961. followed him

  962. from Galilee

  963. and the

  964. Decapolis

  965. and Jerusalem

  966. and Judea

  967. and from beyond

  968. the Jordan

  969. when Jesus

  970. saw the crowds

  971. he went up

  972. on the mountain

  973. and after he

  974. sat down

  975. his disciples

  976. came to him

  977. he opened

  978. his mouth

  979. and began

  980. to teach them

  981. it can't be

  982. any more clear

  983. than that

  984. Matthew

  985. even wants

  986. to tell you

  987. that he had

  988. to open

  989. his mouth

  990. to preach

  991. the word

  992. some of you

  993. may know

  994. that right

  995. after this

  996. he goes

  997. into what's

  998. known as

  999. the sermon

  1000. on the mount

  1001. every religious

  1002. scholar

  1003. whether they

  1004. study

  1005. Christianity

  1006. or something

  1007. else

  1008. or all

  1009. religions

  1010. they are

  1011. all familiar

  1012. with the

  1013. sermon

  1014. on the mount

  1015. it's considered

  1016. one of the

  1017. greatest sermons

  1018. ever preached

  1019. Jesus knew

  1020. that if he

  1021. called everybody

  1022. together by

  1023. healing

  1024. if he healed

  1025. a few people

  1026. word would get

  1027. out

  1028. everybody would

  1029. come to be

  1030. healed

  1031. he said

  1032. I'm not here

  1033. to heal

  1034. everybody

  1035. physically

  1036. I'm here

  1037. to save

  1038. their soul

  1039. I'm here

  1040. to tell them

  1041. how to get

  1042. to God

  1043. he concludes

  1044. that sermon

  1045. or he comes

  1046. close to

  1047. near the

  1048. conclusion

  1049. of that

  1050. sermon

  1051. on the mount

  1052. tells them

  1053. that you

  1054. have two

  1055. options

  1056. you can

  1057. go through

  1058. the narrow

  1059. gate

  1060. that path

  1061. is hard

  1062. it's on

  1063. the narrow

  1064. way

  1065. or

  1066. you can go

  1067. through

  1068. the broad

  1069. gate

  1070. via the

  1071. broad way

  1072. that everybody

  1073. else goes

  1074. to

  1075. only one

  1076. of them

  1077. reaches

  1078. to God

  1079. the other

  1080. will lead

  1081. you to

  1082. hell

  1083. that's what

  1084. he preaches

  1085. to these

  1086. people

  1087. who are

  1088. sick

  1089. who are

  1090. dying

  1091. who are

  1092. needy

  1093. who are

  1094. poor

  1095. so all

  1096. we see

  1097. the apostles

  1098. doing is

  1099. the exact

  1100. same thing

  1101. Jesus also

  1102. tells the

  1103. people why

  1104. it is that

  1105. he preaches

  1106. the word

  1107. of God

  1108. and why

  1109. they need

  1110. to truly

  1111. understand

  1112. the word

  1113. of God

  1114. he says

  1115. this

  1116. and you

  1117. don't have

  1118. to turn

  1119. here

  1120. he says

  1121. this in

  1122. John

  1123. 539

  1124. many of you

  1125. I'm sure

  1126. are familiar

  1127. with this

  1128. text

  1129. he says

  1130. you search

  1131. the scriptures

  1132. so that in

  1133. them you think

  1134. that you have

  1135. eternal life

  1136. it is there

  1137. that they

  1138. testify about

  1139. me

  1140. the scriptures

  1141. testify about

  1142. me

  1143. the Christ

  1144. and you are

  1145. unwilling

  1146. to come to

  1147. me

  1148. so that you

  1149. may have

  1150. life

  1151. there

  1152. there's a

  1153. record

  1154. I can't

  1155. remember

  1156. in which

  1157. gospel

  1158. it is

  1159. there's

  1160. a record

  1161. of eight

  1162. lepers

  1163. that come

  1164. to be

  1165. healed

  1166. by Jesus

  1167. so that's

  1168. eight individuals

  1169. who need

  1170. physical healing

  1171. only one

  1172. of them

  1173. comes back

  1174. one of the

  1175. eight

  1176. comes back

  1177. and praises

  1178. Christ

  1179. because of

  1180. what he's

  1181. done

  1182. has faith

  1183. in him

  1184. that he

  1185. is the

  1186. Messiah

  1187. so it's

  1188. obvious that

  1189. Jesus Christ

  1190. was not

  1191. there just

  1192. to serve

  1193. people with

  1194. their physical

  1195. needs

  1196. nor are

  1197. the

  1198. apostles

  1199. they need

  1200. to be

  1201. constantly

  1202. devoting

  1203. themselves

  1204. to the

  1205. word

  1206. Paul

  1207. echoes

  1208. this

  1209. charge

  1210. and the

  1211. reason

  1212. for it

  1213. in Romans

  1214. 10

  1215. I want

  1216. you to

  1217. go there

  1218. with me

  1219. I'm going

  1220. to read

  1221. Romans 10

  1222. 1-4

  1223. and I'm

  1224. going to

  1225. skip to

  1226. 14

  1227. I know

  1228. that I've

  1229. done that

  1230. a couple

  1231. of times

  1232. skipping

  1233. in between

  1234. but what's

  1235. in between

  1236. there is

  1237. just as

  1238. fruitful

  1239. I promise

  1240. you

  1241. but just

  1242. for the

  1243. sake

  1244. of time

  1245. Paul

  1246. says

  1247. brethren

  1248. my heart's

  1249. desire

  1250. and my

  1251. prayer

  1252. to God

  1253. for them

  1254. is for

  1255. their

  1256. salvation

  1257. for I

  1258. testify

  1259. about them

  1260. that they

  1261. have a

  1262. zeal

  1263. for God

  1264. but not

  1265. in accordance

  1266. with knowledge

  1267. for not

  1268. knowing about

  1269. God's

  1270. righteousness

  1271. and seeking

  1272. to establish

  1273. their own

  1274. they did

  1275. not subject

  1276. themselves

  1277. to the

  1278. righteousness

  1279. of God

  1280. for Christ

  1281. is the

  1282. end of

  1283. the law

  1284. for righteousness

  1285. to everyone

  1286. who believes

  1287. verse 14

  1288. how then

  1289. will they

  1290. call on

  1291. him

  1292. in whom

  1293. they have

  1294. not

  1295. believed

  1296. how

  1297. will

  1298. they

  1299. believe

  1300. in

  1301. him

  1302. whom

  1303. they

  1304. have

  1305. not

  1306. heard

  1307. and

  1308. how

  1309. will

  1310. they

  1311. hear

  1312. without

  1313. a

  1314. preacher

  1315. and

  1316. how

  1317. will

  1318. they

  1319. preach

  1320. unless

  1321. they

  1322. are

  1323. sent

  1324. just

  1325. as

  1326. it

  1327. is

  1328. written

  1329. how

  1330. beautiful

  1331. are

  1332. the

  1333. feet

  1334. of

  1335. those

  1336. who

  1337. bring

  1338. good

  1339. news

  1340. of

  1341. good

  1342. things

  1343. however

  1344. they

  1345. did

  1346. not

  1347. all

  1348. heed

  1349. the

  1350. good

  1351. news

  1352. for

  1353. Isaiah

  1354. says

  1355. Lord

  1356. who

  1357. has

  1358. believed

  1359. our

  1360. report

  1361. so

  1362. faith

  1363. comes

  1364. from

  1365. hearing

  1366. and

  1367. hearing

  1368. by

  1369. the

  1370. word

  1371. of

  1372. Christ

  1373. it's

  1374. right

  1375. there

  1376. that's

  1377. why

  1378. I

  1379. believe

  1380. it

  1381. is

  1382. of

  1383. the

  1384. utmost

  1385. importance

  1386. that

  1387. these

  1388. men

  1389. do

  1390. not

  1391. stop

  1392. what

  1393. they're

  1394. doing

  1395. to

  1396. serve

  1397. the

  1398. tables

  1399. doesn't

  1400. mean

  1401. that

  1402. the

  1403. serving

  1404. of

  1405. the

  1406. tables

  1407. is

  1408. not

  1409. important

  1410. they

  1411. knew

  1412. that

  1413. it

  1414. was

  1415. if

  1416. they've

  1417. stopped

  1418. fulfilling

  1419. the

  1420. reason

  1421. that

  1422. they're

  1423. preaching

  1424. if

  1425. they

  1426. stopped

  1427. serving

  1428. others

  1429. like

  1430. Christ

  1431. served

  1432. others

  1433. what's

  1434. the

  1435. point

  1436. they're

  1437. wasting

  1438. their

  1439. time

  1440. so

  1441. back

  1442. to

  1443. Acts

  1444. the

  1445. statement

  1446. found

  1447. approval

  1448. with

  1449. the

  1450. congregation

  1451. this

  1452. is a

  1453. great

  1454. thing

  1455. because

  1456. now

  1457. they're

  1458. getting

  1459. to see

  1460. reconciliation

  1461. right

  1462. before

  1463. them

  1464. those

  1465. who

  1466. were

  1467. complaining

  1468. they're

  1469. told

  1470. this

  1471. by

  1472. the

  1473. apostles

  1474. and

  1475. they

  1476. say

  1477. okay

  1478. yeah

  1479. this

  1480. makes

  1481. sense

  1482. and

  1483. they

  1484. chose

  1485. the

  1486. seven

  1487. they

  1488. chose

  1489. Stephen

  1490. a man

  1491. full

  1492. of the

  1493. Holy

  1494. Spirit

  1495. even

  1496. though

  1497. it

  1498. says

  1499. that

  1500. Stephen

  1501. specifically

  1502. is

  1503. full

  1504. of the

  1505. !

  1506. Spirit

  1507. we've

  1508. got

  1509. to

  1510. go

  1511. back

  1512. to

  1513. the

  1514. qualifications

  1515. of

  1516. what

  1517. they

  1518. say

  1519. that

  1520. they

  1521. need

  1522. to

  1523. have

  1524. all

  1525. of

  1526. these

  1527. were

  1528. full

  1529. of

  1530. the

  1531. Spirit

  1532. but

  1533. I

  1534. believe

  1535. the

  1536. reason

  1537. that

  1538. Luke

  1539. emphasizes

  1540. Stephen

  1541. is

  1542. full

  1543. of

  1544. the

  1545. Spirit

  1546. is

  1547. because

  1548. what

  1549. we're

  1550. going

  1551. to

  1552. see

  1553. in

  1554. the

  1555. next

  1556. few

  1557. chapters

  1558. or

  1559. the

  1560. next

  1561. chapter

  1562. or two

  1563. as

  1564. we go

  1565. on

  1566. through

  1567. the

  1568. study

  1569. of

  1570. Acts

  1571. you're

  1572. going to

  1573. see

  1574. that

  1575. you

  1576. see

  1577. the

  1578. goes

  1579. on

  1580. to

  1581. save

  1582. an

  1583. Ethiopian

  1584. or

  1585. brings

  1586. the

  1587. Ethiopian

  1588. to

  1589. salvation

  1590. the

  1591. other

  1592. five

  1593. I

  1594. already

  1595. read

  1596. those

  1597. names

  1598. to

  1599. you

  1600. I'm

  1601. not

  1602. going

  1603. to

  1604. do

  1605. it

  1606. again

  1607. however

  1608. we

  1609. don't

  1610. see

  1611. them

  1612. mentioned

  1613. anymore

  1614. in

  1615. the

  1616. book

  1617. of

  1618. Acts

  1619. I

  1620. don't

  1621. know

  1622. the

  1623. reason

  1624. for

  1625. that

  1626. I

  1627. didn't

  1628. take

  1629. the

  1630. time

  1631. to

  1632. speculate

  1633. so

  1634. it's

  1635. probably

  1636. not

  1637. that

  1638. important

  1639. and

  1640. these

  1641. they

  1642. brought

  1643. before

  1644. the

  1645. apostles

  1646. and

  1647. after

  1648. praying

  1649. they

  1650. laid

  1651. hands

  1652. on

  1653. them

  1654. so

  1655. when

  1656. they

  1657. nominated

  1658. these

  1659. men

  1660. they

  1661. took

  1662. them

  1663. back

  1664. to

  1665. the

  1666. apostles

  1667. knowing

  1668. that

  1669. these

  1670. apostles

  1671. needed

  1672. to

  1673. approve

  1674. they

  1675. needed

  1676. to

  1677. see

  1678. that

  1679. these

  1680. men

  1681. had

  1682. those

  1683. six

  1684. qualifications

  1685. of

  1686. the

  1687. deacons

  1688. they

  1689. needed

  1690. to

  1691. know

  1692. that

  1693. these

  1694. men

  1695. were

  1696. capable

  1697. of

  1698. serving

  1699. the

  1700. widows

  1701. so

  1702. when

  1703. it

  1704. says

  1705. they

  1706. laid

  1707. hands

  1708. on

  1709. them

  1710. we

  1711. see

  1712. that

  1713. a

  1714. couple

  1715. of

  1716. times

  1717. we

  1718. see

  1719. that

  1720. both

  1721. healing

  1722. that's

  1723. when

  1724. hands

  1725. were

  1726. laid

  1727. on

  1728. people

  1729. sometimes

  1730. it

  1731. was

  1732. for

  1733. prayer

  1734. in

  1735. this

  1736. case

  1737. it's

  1738. really

  1739. the

  1740. leaders

  1741. what

  1742. I

  1743. see

  1744. is

  1745. kind

  1746. of

  1747. the

  1748. knighting

  1749. the

  1750. deacons

  1751. saying

  1752. they

  1753. laid

  1754. hands

  1755. on

  1756. them

  1757. I'm

  1758. sure

  1759. they

  1760. prayed

  1761. over

  1762. them

  1763. and

  1764. they

  1765. blessed

  1766. them

  1767. to

  1768. go

  1769. back

  1770. out

  1771. and

  1772. serve

  1773. the

  1774. widows

  1775. and

  1776. then

  1777. we

  1778. have

  1779. the

  1780. result

  1781. of

  1782. this

  1783. reconciliation

  1784. this

  1785. coming

  1786. together

  1787. of

  1788. the

  1789. church

  1790. this

  1791. agreement

  1792. that

  1793. they

  1794. have

  1795. the

  1796. election

  1797. of

  1798. these

  1799. seven

  1800. deacons

  1801. we

  1802. have

  1803. the

  1804. word

  1805. of

  1806. God

  1807. kept

  1808. on

  1809. spreading

  1810. and

  1811. the

  1812. number

  1813. of

  1814. the

  1815. disciples

  1816. continued

  1817. to

  1818. increase

  1819. greatly

  1820. in

  1821. Jerusalem

  1822. and

  1823. a

  1824. great

  1825. many

  1826. of

  1827. the

  1828. priests

  1829. were

  1830. becoming

  1831. obedient

  1832. to

  1833. the

  1834. faith

  1835. so

  1836. the

  1837. ESV

  1838. I

  1839. think

  1840. says

  1841. that

  1842. the

  1843. word

  1844. of

  1845. God

  1846. was

  1847. increasing

  1848. in

  1849. the

  1850. NSB

  1851. it

  1852. does

  1853. say

  1854. the

  1855. word

  1856. of

  1857. God

  1858. kept

  1859. spreading

  1860. because

  1861. people

  1862. kept

  1863. preaching

  1864. it

  1865. kept

  1866. spreading

  1867. because

  1868. people

  1869. kept

  1870. talking

  1871. about

  1872. it

  1873. twelve

  1874. apostles

  1875. were not

  1876. the only

  1877. ones

  1878. that were

  1879. preaching

  1880. the word

  1881. of God

  1882. were ministering

  1883. the word

  1884. of God

  1885. those

  1886. who were

  1887. being

  1888. healed

  1889. would go

  1890. back

  1891. to

  1892. Samaria

  1893. and tell

  1894. everyone

  1895. you've

  1896. got to

  1897. know

  1898. about

  1899. this

  1900. Christ

  1901. he's

  1902. come

  1903. believe

  1904. it or

  1905. not

  1906. the

  1907. Jews

  1908. crucified

  1909. him

  1910. but

  1911. he

  1912. rose

  1913. again

  1914. from

  1915. the

  1916. dead

  1917. and so

  1918. the result

  1919. of the

  1920. word

  1921. of God

  1922. spreading

  1923. is the

  1924. number

  1925. of

  1926. disciples

  1927. continued

  1928. to

  1929. increase

  1930. greatly

  1931. in

  1932. Jerusalem

  1933. and a

  1934. great

  1935. many

  1936. of the

  1937. priests

  1938. were

  1939. becoming

  1940. obedient

  1941. to the

  1942. faith

  1943. it's

  1944. obvious

  1945. that

  1946. Satan's

  1947. efforts

  1948. were

  1949. throtted

  1950. here

  1951. everybody

  1952. came

  1953. together

  1954. and they

  1955. went

  1956. back

  1957. out

  1958. and we

  1959. see that

  1960. word

  1961. used

  1962. again

  1963. that

  1964. pletheno

  1965. where

  1966. we

  1967. get

  1968. plethora

  1969. continued

  1970. to

  1971. increase

  1972. greatly

  1973. a great

  1974. multitude

  1975. of

  1976. people

  1977. more

  1978. than

  1979. 20,000

  1980. people

  1981. were

  1982. coming

  1983. to

  1984. know

  1985. Christ

  1986. that's

  1987. a

  1988. wonderful

  1989. thing

  1990. when you

  1991. see

  1992. the

  1993. obedience

  1994. of the

  1995. apostles

  1996. and the

  1997. service

  1998. of the

  1999. deacons

  2000. together

  2001. what I

  2002. want to

  2003. exhort

  2004. or

  2005. challenge

  2006. this

  2007. body

  2008. to do

  2009. with

  2010. that

  2011. is

  2012. that

  2013. some

  2014. of

  2015. you

  2016. know

  2017. that

  2018. we're

  2019. going

  2020. to be

  2021. multiplying

  2022. and

  2023. creating

  2024. a new

  2025. body

  2026. here

  2027. pretty

  2028. soon

  2029. an

  2030. extension

  2031. or a

  2032. branch

  2033. of

  2034. Christ's

  2035. family

  2036. in

  2037. flowery

  2038. branch

  2039. I think

  2040. it's in

  2041. flowery

  2042. branch

  2043. or is it

  2044. in

  2045. Gainesville

  2046. Oakwood

  2047. right in

  2048. between

  2049. so as

  2050. we go

  2051. and do

  2052. that

  2053. these

  2054. are the

  2055. two

  2056. things

  2057. that you

  2058. cannot

  2059. neglect

  2060. it's

  2061. the

  2062. preaching

  2063. of the

  2064. word

  2065. and

  2066. prayer

  2067. it's

  2068. designated

  2069. for men

  2070. to be

  2071. doing

  2072. praying

  2073. faithfully

  2074. and often

  2075. and then

  2076. the service

  2077. to those

  2078. people

  2079. that are

  2080. coming

  2081. coming to

  2082. hear the

  2083. word of

  2084. God

  2085. they're

  2086. not

  2087. going to

  2088. be

  2089. saved

  2090. they're

  2091. not

  2092. going to

  2093. know

  2094. who the

  2095. Christ

  2096. is

  2097. unless

  2098. they

  2099. hear

  2100. it

  2101. when

  2102. you

  2103. think

  2104. about

  2105. who

  2106. can

  2107. serve

  2108. I

  2109. guarantee

  2110. you

  2111. almost

  2112. everybody

  2113. in this

  2114. room

  2115. everybody

  2116. I

  2117. believe

  2118. has

  2119. something

  2120. to give

  2121. to the

  2122. body

  2123. we saw

  2124. this in

  2125. the early

  2126. church

  2127. I think

  2128. Daniel preached

  2129. on this

  2130. that they're

  2131. coming together

  2132. they're selling

  2133. all their

  2134. possessions

  2135. or they're

  2136. giving

  2137. they're

  2138. divvying

  2139. out all

  2140. their

  2141. possessions

  2142. to whoever

  2143. had

  2144. need

  2145. so when

  2146. that happens

  2147. there's a

  2148. great service

  2149. that's going

  2150. on to these

  2151. people that

  2152. are in

  2153. need

  2154. and we're

  2155. able to be

  2156. those people

  2157. too

  2158. I want to

  2159. read to you

  2160. from a quote

  2161. or a quote

  2162. from

  2163. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  2164. from a book

  2165. that several

  2166. of us have

  2167. been reading

  2168. called

  2169. Life Together

  2170. he says

  2171. that the church

  2172. does not need

  2173. brilliant

  2174. personalities

  2175. but faithful

  2176. servants

  2177. of Jesus

  2178. and the

  2179. brethren

  2180. those who

  2181. are seeking

  2182. to serve

  2183. Christ

  2184. and those

  2185. who are

  2186. seeking

  2187. to serve

  2188. their

  2189. brothers

  2190. around

  2191. them

  2192. this is

  2193. what

  2194. Christ

  2195. says

  2196. love

  2197. your

  2198. brothers

  2199. as you

  2200. love

  2201. yourself

  2202. that's

  2203. all that

  2204. we need

  2205. to do

  2206. we don't

  2207. need to

  2208. have

  2209. programs

  2210. if it

  2211. ends up

  2212. being

  2213. ten of

  2214. you guys

  2215. in a

  2216. room

  2217. in Oakwood

  2218. be

  2219. faithful

  2220. to preach

  2221. the word

  2222. of God

  2223. be

  2224. faithful

  2225. to know

  2226. the needs

  2227. of those

  2228. there

  2229. and serve

  2230. them

  2231. now we're

  2232. kind of

  2233. hindered

  2234. here

  2235. in my

  2236. opinion

  2237. that we

  2238. don't have

  2239. a lot

  2240. of diversity

  2241. in this

  2242. church

  2243. and when I

  2244. say diversity

  2245. I mean

  2246. different

  2247. ethnicities

  2248. you're going

  2249. to look

  2250. around you

  2251. the majority

  2252. of us

  2253. I'm going

  2254. to be so

  2255. bold to say

  2256. all of us

  2257. are white

  2258. Caucasians

  2259. that doesn't

  2260. mean that you

  2261. come from

  2262. the same

  2263. types of

  2264. backgrounds

  2265. some of

  2266. you

  2267. many of

  2268. you

  2269. come from

  2270. broken

  2271. homes

  2272. many of

  2273. you come

  2274. from poor

  2275. homes

  2276. it's

  2277. absolutely

  2278. true

  2279. but when

  2280. you get

  2281. amongst a

  2282. group of

  2283. people

  2284. like those

  2285. in Oakwood

  2286. and Gainesville

  2287. they come

  2288. from those

  2289. same

  2290. backgrounds

  2291. but they

  2292. also have

  2293. something

  2294. that the

  2295. Hellenist

  2296. Jews

  2297. had

  2298. they have

  2299. a different

  2300. language

  2301. they have

  2302. a totally

  2303. different

  2304. culture

  2305. those are

  2306. the ones

  2307. that I'm

  2308. hoping

  2309. that we're

  2310. able to

  2311. reach

  2312. with the

  2313. gospel

  2314. of Jesus

  2315. Christ

  2316. you

  2317. have to

  2318. be

  2319. faithful

  2320. we

  2321. have to

  2322. be

  2323. faithful

  2324. to

  2325. serve

  2326. them

  2327. I want

  2328. to close

  2329. with

  2330. a

  2331. passage

  2332. from

  2333. 1 Corinthians

  2334. 13

  2335. I'll take

  2336. that back

  2337. 1 Corinthians

  2338. 12

  2339. there's

  2340. great

  2341. application

  2342. that goes

  2343. on

  2344. into

  2345. chapter

  2346. 13

  2347. and I'm

  2348. sure that

  2349. everybody

  2350. in here

  2351. that's

  2352. been

  2353. married

  2354. or

  2355. is

  2356. married

  2357. in a

  2358. ceremony

  2359. has heard

  2360. this

  2361. verse

  2362. but

  2363. that's

  2364. one

  2365. of the

  2366. reasons

  2367. I'm

  2368. not

  2369. going

  2370. to

  2371. read

  2372. it

  2373. instead

  2374. I'm

  2375. going

  2376. to read

  2377. the

  2378. context

  2379. and that's

  2380. prior

  2381. to that

  2382. so

  2383. in

  2384. chapter

  2385. 12

  2386. verse

  2387. 14

  2388. listen

  2389. carefully

  2390. so this

  2391. applies

  2392. to

  2393. everyone

  2394. everyone

  2395. that's

  2396. in this

  2397. room

  2398. if you

  2399. are

  2400. serving

  2401. Christ

  2402. if you

  2403. know

  2404. Christ

  2405. if you

  2406. confess

  2407. with your

  2408. mouth

  2409. and believe

  2410. in your

  2411. heart

  2412. that Jesus

  2413. Christ

  2414. is Lord

  2415. all of

  2416. you

  2417. are one

  2418. of these

  2419. members

  2420. of the

  2421. body

  2422. for the

  2423. body

  2424. is not

  2425. one

  2426. member

  2427. but

  2428. many

  2429. if

  2430. the

  2431. foot

  2432. says

  2433. because

  2434. I

  2435. am

  2436. not

  2437. a

  2438. hand

  2439. I

  2440. am

  2441. not

  2442. a

  2443. part

  2444. of

  2445. the

  2446. body

  2447. it

  2448. is

  2449. not

  2450. for

  2451. this

  2452. reason

  2453. any

  2454. the

  2455. less

  2456. a

  2457. part

  2458. of

  2459. the

  2460. body

  2461. and

  2462. if

  2463. the

  2464. ear

  2465. says

  2466. because

  2467. I

  2468. am

  2469. not

  2470. an

  2471. eye

  2472. I

  2473. am

  2474. not

  2475. a

  2476. part

  2477. of

  2478. the

  2479. body

  2480. it

  2481. is

  2482. not

  2483. for

  2484. this

  2485. reason

  2486. !

  2487. any

  2488. the

  2489. !

  2490. less

  2491. a

  2492. part

  2493. of

  2494. the

  2495. !

  2496. If

  2497. the

  2498. whole

  2499. body

  2500. were

  2501. an

  2502. eye

  2503. where

  2504. would

  2505. the

  2506. hearing

  2507. be?

  2508. If

  2509. the

  2510. whole

  2511. were

  2512. hearing

  2513. where

  2514. would

  2515. the

  2516. sense

  2517. of

  2518. smell

  2519. be?

  2520. But

  2521. now

  2522. God

  2523. has

  2524. placed

  2525. the

  2526. members

  2527. each

  2528. one

  2529. of

  2530. them

  2531. in

  2532. the

  2533. body

  2534. just

  2535. as

  2536. he

  2537. desired

  2538. if

  2539. they

  2540. were

  2541. all

  2542. one

  2543. member

  2544. where

  2545. would

  2546. the

  2547. body

  2548. be?

  2549. But

  2550. now

  2551. there

  2552. are

  2553. many

  2554. members

  2555. but

  2556. one

  2557. body

  2558. and

  2559. the

  2560. eye

  2561. cannot

  2562. say

  2563. to

  2564. the

  2565. hand

  2566. I

  2567. have

  2568. no

  2569. need

  2570. of

  2571. you

  2572. on

  2573. the

  2574. contrary

  2575. it

  2576. is

  2577. much

  2578. truer

  2579. that

  2580. the

  2581. members

  2582. of

  2583. the

  2584. body

  2585. which

  2586. seem

  2587. to

  2588. be

  2589. weaker

  2590. are

  2591. necessary

  2592. and

  2593. those

  2594. members

  2595. of

  2596. the

  2597. body

  2598. which

  2599. we

  2600. deem

  2601. less

  2602. honorable

  2603. on

  2604. these

  2605. we

  2606. bestow

  2607. more

  2608. abundant

  2609. honor

  2610. and

  2611. are

  2612. less

  2613. presentable

  2614. and

  2615. our

  2616. less

  2617. presentable

  2618. members

  2619. become

  2620. much

  2621. more

  2622. presentable

  2623. whereas

  2624. our

  2625. more

  2626. presentable

  2627. members

  2628. have

  2629. no

  2630. need

  2631. of

  2632. it

  2633. but

  2634. God

  2635. has

  2636. so

  2637. composed

  2638. more

  2639. abundant

  2640. honor

  2641. to

  2642. that

  2643. member

  2644. which

  2645. lacked

  2646. so

  2647. that

  2648. there

  2649. may

  2650. be

  2651. no

  2652. division

  2653. in the

  2654. body

  2655. that

  2656. the

  2657. members

  2658. may

  2659. have

  2660. the

  2661. same

  2662. care

  2663. for

  2664. one

  2665. another

  2666. and

  2667. if

  2668. one

  2669. member

  2670. suffers

  2671. all

  2672. the

  2673. members

  2674. suffer

  2675. with

  2676. it

  2677. if

  2678. one

  2679. member

  2680. is

  2681. honored

  2682. all

  2683. the

  2684. members

  2685. rejoice

  2686. with

  2687. it

  2688. let

  2689. !

  2690. let

  2691. me

  2692. pray

  2693. to
