  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of Acts chapter 6.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  2. Our text for this morning will be Acts chapter 6, verse 8 through Acts chapter 7, verse 1.

    Acts 6:8 Acts 7:1

  3. And while you're getting there, let me just express to you that it's very good to be back with you this morning.

  4. The whole family took last week off just as we've struggled with our new little one.

  5. If you don't know my family, we have a brand new baby boy in addition to our other two.

  6. And Silas has been a bit more challenging than the others.

  7. We've had our what in the world do we do moments with him, but we're mostly filled with joy.

  8. Sam's here with him somewhere.

  9. I think she's already. Oh, she's here in the room.

  10. How about that for now? She's here in the room.

  11. That's the fussing you're hearing over there.

  12. It's also very good to be back preaching with you again as I'm coming off a preaching break.

  13. I just want to remind you guys why we're doing that, why I'm taking these times of stepping away,

  14. not from my job in total, but from preaching itself.

  15. And they're twofold.

  16. Number one, we want you to want to come and hear the Word of God preached.

  17. Simply that.

  18. The truth proclaimed.

  19. And not necessarily by a particular person.

  20. And I don't think that that happens here.

  21. It's not that I have some strange disillusionment that I'm being worshipped in any way whatsoever.

  22. But we want to get ahead of that kind of thing.

  23. We don't want you to show up and think,

  24. Ah, not Nathan.

  25. Please don't ever think that.

  26. Praise God for the Word of God preached.

  27. The truth is proclaimed here.

  28. And I praise God for the depth of talent we have in that regard.

  29. The second reason is simply that we need to let other people exercise gifting.

  30. I'm certainly glad to get up here week in and week out.

  31. It does grow tiring at times.

  32. But primarily, we need to let other men get into the process and work that gifting out

  33. and have the chance to share what God is working into them with you.

  34. And so, you're going to see breaks like that periodically across the rest of the year.

  35. But all that said, I'm glad to be back.

  36. I'm glad also to be back,

  37. to begin this period of time of study and preaching on your behalf

  38. with a very important transitionary character in the book of Acts.

  39. Come to the life and ministry of Stephen.

  40. Peter has been the primary character up to this point in Luke's narrative.

  41. Continuing forward, we will observe the ministry of Peter in chapters 10, 11, and 12.

  42. And then his presence at the Jerusalem Council in chapter 15.

  43. But the focus is beginning now to shift away from Peter as the primary narrative character to Paul.

  44. We meet him first as Saul at the very end of chapter 7 and on into chapter 8.

  45. And we see this shift through the end of the book then as Paul is the central figure in Luke's narrative.

  46. So, we have this record of Stephen's ministry and it's a short one.

  47. And rightly so, because his ministry is brief.

  48. He is selected to serve as a deacon in order to serve the tables of the Greek-speaking Jewish widows

  49. at the beginning of chapter 6.

  50. And his ministry ends at the end of chapter 7.

  51. He expands his ministry as a deacon to that of a preacher and an apologist.

  52. And the Lord sees fit to end Stephen's ministry by making him the first martyr of the Christian church.

  53. I appreciated this summary by Charles Spurgeon as I appreciate so much of his preaching and writing.

  54. And I put it on the front of the bulletin for you to follow along.

  55. He preached, Stephen the deacon became Stephen the preacher.

  56. This holy man not only used such gifts as he had in one department,

  57. but having abilities for a more spiritual form of service,

  58. he laid them at once upon the altar of Christ.

  59. Nor is this all.

  60. He had a higher promotion yet.

  61. When he had thus become Stephen the wise apologist and brave defender of the faith,

  62. he did not stop there, but he mounted to the highest rank of the Christian army.

  63. He gained the peerless dignity, the foremost nobility, the brightest glory.

  64. I mean the martyr's name and honor.

  65. Stephen the deacon is first Stephen the preacher.

  66. And afterwards, Stephen, God's faithful and true witness,

  67. laying down his life so that he may seal his testimony with his blood.

  68. So we have the opportunity to look at the life and ministry of Stephen, however brief.

  69. And we're going to do so across the next two weeks.

  70. Today, I'd like to look at his arrest and inquiry.

  71. And the next Lord's Day, we'll look at Stephen's response and his death.

  72. And over the next two weeks, I want us to keep in mind two general lessons,

  73. general and broad lessons that we can learn from Stephen's life and ministry.

  74. Number one, a life given in service to God is a life that is not wasted.

  75. As we come to the conclusion of Stephen's life next week,

  76. we'll see that God sovereignly uses Stephen's martyrdom for the explosive expansion of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  77. His death is the catalyst that sets off so much gospel reach and response.

  78. A life given in service to God is a life that is not wasted.

  79. And secondly, the significance of such a life given to God cannot be measured by its short-term gains,

  80. its breadth, or its length.

  81. The significance of a life given in service to God cannot be measured by its short-term gains,

  82. its breadth, or its length.

  83. So with those two things in mind, let's look at our text this morning.

  84. Acts chapter 6, beginning in verse 8 through chapter 7, verse 1.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  85. And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

  86. Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the freedmen, as it was called,

  87. and of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians,

  88. and of those from Cilicia and Asia,

  89. rose up and disputed with Stephen.

  90. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking.

  91. Then they secretly instigated men who said,

  92. We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.

  93. And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes,

  94. and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council.

  95. And they set up false witnesses who said,

  96. This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law.

  97. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place

  98. and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.

  99. And gazing at him,

  100. all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

  101. And the high priest said,

  102. Are these things so?

  103. Beloved,

  104. this is God's word to us.

  105. It was written for his glory and our good.

  106. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  107. and obey its commands.

  108. Now, our text this morning,

  109. I would like to look at in two ways.

  110. Number one,

  111. the details of Stephen's arrest.

  112. And number two,

  113. the Stephen who was arrested.

  114. The details of Stephen's arrest.

  115. And number two,

  116. the Stephen who was arrested.

  117. So number one,

  118. the details of Stephen's arrest.

  119. We begin out here,

  120. after him coming off,

  121. we get this explanation of him being called as a deacon,

  122. this early church that's meeting in Jerusalem

  123. for the sake of serving the tables of the widows,

  124. of the Hellenist Jews,

  125. that Stephen is not only serving tables.

  126. He is also preaching.

  127. We have a deacon here who preaches.

  128. And some have supposed

  129. that the calling of these men

  130. at the beginning of Acts chapter 6

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  131. were not the calling of deacons,

  132. was not the institution of that office,

  133. but rather the institution of the office of elder.

  134. Because Stephen was preaching.

  135. Elders must be able to teach.

  136. That's a qualification that's given for an elder.

  137. But that does not mean

  138. that no one else can have that qualification.

  139. In fact,

  140. deacons and all believers,

  141. whether or not they hold an office in the church,

  142. whether or not they are especially gifted

  143. to teach in a setting like this,

  144. are to be

  145. preachers of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  146. Don't miss that.

  147. And what a great encouragement that is to us

  148. that Stephen,

  149. chosen to be a deacon,

  150. I will argue,

  151. to serve the physical needs of the church,

  152. was also a preacher.

  153. Stephen, the deacon, preached.

  154. If you're looking at the text carefully,

  155. you might be saying,

  156. on what basis do I come to the conclusion

  157. that he's preaching?

  158. Because it doesn't actually say explicitly

  159. that he preached.

  160. But recall that we have noted

  161. in our study of Mark,

  162. if you've been with us for quite a while,

  163. seen the record of Jesus' ministry,

  164. and in our study of Acts so far,

  165. that signs and wonders

  166. were always intended to validate

  167. the message of the gospel.

  168. The preaching of the good news of Jesus Christ

  169. always accompanied signs and wonders

  170. being performed.

  171. Signs and wonders were meant

  172. to cause people to take notice

  173. of the preaching.

  174. God uses the preaching of the gospel

  175. to work the greatest of miracles.

  176. And beloved, we cannot miss this.

  177. God is still in the business

  178. of working miracles

  179. in that He changes hard hearts

  180. to ones that beat for Him.

  181. There is no greater miracle

  182. that has further reach

  183. than hearts changed

  184. toward God.

  185. So, the fact that Stephen

  186. is performing great wonders

  187. and signs

  188. necessitates that he was also

  189. preaching.

  190. So, first,

  191. I come to a conclusion from that.

  192. Second, I come to it

  193. because of the way

  194. in which he's opposed.

  195. Note the opposition

  196. that comes to him for this.

  197. He's not opposed

  198. because he's working miracles.

  199. Verse 9

  200. speaks of

  201. a select group of men

  202. from a variety

  203. of the Jerusalem

  204. synagogues.

  205. We see,

  206. then,

  207. some of those

  208. who belong to the synagogue.

  209. I take that to mean

  210. that those who

  211. were versed

  212. in debate,

  213. those who were of

  214. high training

  215. from each of these synagogues,

  216. the synagogues

  217. of the freedmen,

  218. we get this

  219. parenthetical by Luke

  220. as it was called,

  221. and of the Cyrenians

  222. and of the Alexandrians

  223. and of those from

  224. Cilicia and Asia

  225. rose up

  226. and disputed

  227. with Stephen.

  228. These are a select

  229. group of men

  230. from a variety

  231. of the Jerusalem

  232. synagogues.

  233. You could think of

  234. synagogues

  235. in this day

  236. while the primary

  237. worship of the day

  238. in Jerusalem

  239. happened at the temple,

  240. synagogues were

  241. much like seminaries,

  242. places of

  243. theological

  244. training.

  245. And there were

  246. no less than

  247. 480 synagogues

  248. in Jerusalem

  249. in these days.

  250. And they had them

  251. of all kinds

  252. of variety.

  253. These five

  254. are all synagogues

  255. of Greek-speaking Jews.

  256. Now, if you missed

  257. last week,

  258. the Hellenists,

  259. the Greek-speaking Jews,

  260. were those

  261. who either

  262. were already living

  263. in Gentile lands

  264. from the dispersion,

  265. therefore they spoke

  266. Greek as a primary

  267. language,

  268. right?

  269. And they were being

  270. brought back in

  271. or they had started

  272. there and moved

  273. back in

  274. and there was

  275. kind of a bit

  276. of a class separation

  277. as a result

  278. of this.

  279. So,

  280. we find that

  281. Stephen's primary

  282. ministry is to

  283. the Greek-speaking

  284. Jewish widows

  285. and therefore

  286. he's being opposed

  287. by Greek-speaking

  288. Jews.

  289. The synagogue

  290. of the freedmen,

  291. the freedmen,

  292. were made up

  293. of descendants

  294. of Jewish slaves

  295. that were captured

  296. by Pompey

  297. in 63 B.C.

  298. and taken to Rome.

  299. They were later

  300. granted their freedom,

  301. therefore the name

  302. Freedmen,

  303. and they formed

  304. a Jewish community

  305. living there

  306. in Rome.

  307. But this is a synagogue

  308. located in Jerusalem

  309. of these people

  310. who would travel

  311. to Jerusalem

  312. in order to be

  313. educated in

  314. theology.

  315. The synagogues

  316. of the Cyrenians

  317. and the Alexandrians,

  318. both major cities

  319. of northern Africa

  320. which had large

  321. Jewish populations.

  322. Again,

  323. a synagogue

  324. in Jerusalem

  325. for these people.

  326. The synagogues

  327. of Cilicia

  328. and Asia

  329. in much the same way

  330. were Roman provinces

  331. in Asia Minor.

  332. Of interest

  333. at this point,

  334. the Apostle Paul

  335. was from Tarsus,

  336. which is a town

  337. in Cilicia.

  338. Recall

  339. that he was a student

  340. of Gamaliel,

  341. which we've seen

  342. previously in chapter 5.

  343. And he was likely

  344. part of the debate

  345. that's going on.

  346. He's likely one

  347. of the people

  348. standing here

  349. and opposing.

  350. He's likely one

  351. of the people

  352. that helps

  353. recruit liars

  354. to bring false charge

  355. against Stephen

  356. as we see him

  357. at the end

  358. of chapter 7

  359. standing,

  360. residing over

  361. Stephen's

  362. martyrdom.

  363. So there's

  364. this opposition

  365. and it's coming

  366. against teaching.

  367. Verse 10 says,

  368. but they could not

  369. withstand the wisdom

  370. and the spirit

  371. with which he was speaking.

  372. They were unable

  373. to handle him

  374. in a debate.

  375. They were unable

  376. to best the power

  377. of God

  378. at work

  379. within him.

  380. They were incapable

  381. without the illumination

  382. of the spirit of God

  383. to fully comprehend

  384. the scriptures.

  385. They've been trained

  386. in it.

  387. Masterfully trained.

  388. Stephen is likely

  389. a lay person

  390. but he has

  391. the spirit of God

  392. and the power of God

  393. at work within him

  394. to help him understand

  395. this book

  396. that had been taught

  397. to him

  398. from a child.

  399. And he lays it out

  400. for them

  401. and they're unable

  402. to debate with him

  403. and so what do they do?

  404. They turn

  405. to deception.

  406. They have no other

  407. way to stand up

  408. against him

  409. and so

  410. they turn

  411. to deception

  412. and they bring up

  413. these false charges

  414. in secret

  415. and hidden places.

  416. They instigate men.

  417. They recruit false witness

  418. against him

  419. and they make these charges

  420. against Stephen

  421. in three pairs.

  422. And we see them

  423. in verse 11

  424. and verse 13

  425. and verse 14.

  426. Verse 11

  427. blasphemous words

  428. against Moses

  429. and God.

  430. Stephen is speaking

  431. these blasphemous words

  432. against Moses

  433. and God.

  434. Verse 13

  435. He won't stop

  436. speaking words

  437. against this

  438. holy place

  439. and the law.

  440. And verse 14

  441. this

  442. Jesus of Nazareth

  443. will destroy

  444. this place

  445. and will change

  446. the customs

  447. that Moses

  448. delivered

  449. to us.

  450. And the way

  451. these accusations

  452. are brought

  453. the pairs

  454. expand

  455. on the original

  456. accusation

  457. that Stephen

  458. is against

  459. Moses

  460. and against

  461. God.

  462. That is

  463. they go on

  464. to make these

  465. accusations

  466. to say

  467. to speak

  468. blasphemous words

  469. against Moses

  470. is to speak

  471. against the law

  472. and the customs

  473. handed down

  474. by Moses.

  475. And to speak

  476. blasphemous words

  477. against God

  478. is to speak

  479. against

  480. the temple.

  481. Now

  482. these charges

  483. weren't

  484. altogether

  485. false.

  486. Stephen

  487. was certainly

  488. not being

  489. blasphemous

  490. but he was

  491. preaching

  492. the gospel.

  493. So he was

  494. teaching

  495. that righteousness

  496. could not

  497. be found

  498. in the law

  499. or in the

  500. traditions

  501. and that temple

  502. worship

  503. would never

  504. atone

  505. for sin.

  506. He was teaching

  507. that these

  508. things

  509. were a shadow

  510. of the thing

  511. that has

  512. come

  513. in Christ.

  514. Stephen

  515. was preaching

  516. the gospel.

  517. He was

  518. speaking of

  519. the person

  520. and work

  521. of Jesus

  522. Christ.

  523. And that's

  524. why it's

  525. so offensive

  526. to them.

  527. We've said

  528. this in

  529. previous weeks

  530. that went

  531. against the

  532. world system

  533. which their

  534. religion was

  535. a part of.

  536. It flew

  537. in the face

  538. of it.

  539. And they

  540. could not

  541. have him

  542. tear down

  543. their

  544. religious

  545. worship.

  546. Stephen

  547. preached

  548. that people

  549. must believe

  550. in the

  551. person

  552. and work

  553. of Jesus

  554. Christ.

  555. And I don't

  556. know if you've

  557. been noticing

  558. me across

  559. the last

  560. month saying

  561. that often

  562. that phrasing

  563. person and

  564. work

  565. of Jesus

  566. Christ

  567. because beloved

  568. it's not

  569. enough to

  570. believe in

  571. one and

  572. not the

  573. other.

  574. We must

  575. believe that

  576. Jesus is

  577. who he said

  578. he is.

  579. That he is

  580. the son of

  581. God.

  582. That he is

  583. the Messiah

  584. the chosen

  585. one of

  586. God.

  587. The one

  588. who was

  589. sent to

  590. take away

  591. the sins

  592. of the

  593. world.

  594. We also

  595. must believe

  596. in his

  597. work.

  598. We must

  599. understand that

  600. he lived a

  601. perfect life.

  602. That he

  603. fulfilled the

  604. law in

  605. himself.

  606. That he

  607. has

  608. righteousness

  609. that's

  610. granted to

  611. us by

  612. faith.

  613. We put

  614. on his

  615. righteousness

  616. and that

  617. his

  618. sacrificial

  619. death

  620. paid the

  621. penalty for

  622. our sin.

  623. Both are

  624. important.

  625. The person

  626. and the

  627. work.

  628. We must

  629. believe that

  630. Jesus is

  631. the Christ

  632. and that

  633. his active

  634. and passive

  635. obedience has

  636. brought us

  637. into right

  638. relationship

  639. with God.

  640. And this

  641. is the

  642. gospel that

  643. Stephen is

  644. preaching.

  645. This is the

  646. offense to

  647. the world

  648. system in

  649. which he

  650. lived.

  651. Now, the

  652. story of

  653. Stephen is

  654. used by

  655. Luke.

  656. And I

  657. don't mean

  658. that he

  659. makes the

  660. story up or

  661. that he

  662. conveniently

  663. puts the

  664. story in

  665. this place.

  666. But under

  667. inspiration,

  668. Luke writes

  669. this account

  670. and uses

  671. the story

  672. for a

  673. very important

  674. transition in

  675. the book of

  676. Acts.

  677. I want to

  678. show you

  679. that.

  680. At this

  681. point in

  682. the story,

  683. God is

  684. about to

  685. turn loose

  686. the church.

  687. The beginning

  688. of chapter

  689. 8,

  690. persecution

  691. ramps up

  692. and the

  693. church is

  694. scattered.

  695. God is

  696. going to

  697. take the

  698. gospel of

  699. Jesus Christ

  700. in a

  701. single

  702. generation

  703. across

  704. three

  705. continents.

  706. The

  707. gospel goes

  708. forth in

  709. a radical

  710. way and

  711. it's about

  712. to happen

  713. right here

  714. on the

  715. cusp of

  716. that.

  717. And here

  718. the story

  719. of Stephen

  720. is this

  721. transition

  722. between the

  723. two.

  724. The

  725. gospel is

  726. going to

  727. go from

  728. Jerusalem

  729. to the

  730. world.

  731. At the

  732. beginning

  733. of chapter

  734. 8.

  735. In

  736. Acts 3,

  737. chapters 3

  738. through 5,

  739. we see the

  740. effect of the

  741. gospel as

  742. it's spreading

  743. throughout

  744. Jerusalem.

  745. Like the

  746. teaching is

  747. everywhere,

  748. like many,

  749. many thousands,

  750. possibly tens

  751. of thousands

  752. have converted

  753. to faith in

  754. Jesus Christ.

  755. It's spreading

  756. even in the

  757. face of

  758. opposition,

  759. even in the

  760. face of

  761. the arrest

  762. and the

  763. beating of

  764. the apostles.

  765. The gospel

  766. is going

  767. forth

  768. throughout

  769. Jerusalem.

  770. The

  771. primary

  772. message

  773. of their

  774. preaching

  775. is that

  776. God's

  777. blessing

  778. is found

  779. in

  780. Jesus,

  781. not in

  782. temple

  783. worship.

  784. Beginning

  785. after

  786. temple

  787. worship,

  788. right?

  789. As a

  790. shadow

  791. of a

  792. former

  793. thing.

  794. God's

  795. blessing

  796. is

  797. ultimately

  798. found

  799. in

  800. Christ.

  801. Now,

  802. in Acts

  803. 6 and

  804. 7,

  805. the life

  806. and ministry

  807. of Stephen,

  808. the proclamation

  809. of the

  810. gospel leads

  811. to Stephen's

  812. trial and

  813. his death.

  814. The opposition

  815. to the

  816. gospel,

  817. even as

  818. it's

  819. gone

  820. forth

  821. before

  822. this

  823. in

  824. Jerusalem,

  825. right?

  826. In the

  827. face of

  828. opposition,

  829. the opposition

  830. cranks way

  831. up.

  832. We see

  833. the first

  834. martyrdom,

  835. the first

  836. death for

  837. the cause

  838. of Christ.

  839. Leads to

  840. his trial

  841. and to

  842. his death.

  843. And the

  844. primary

  845. message of

  846. Stephen's

  847. preaching

  848. is that

  849. God has

  850. never been

  851. limited

  852. by the

  853. temple.

  854. Always

  855. try to

  856. contain

  857. him in

  858. a house,

  859. put him

  860. in a

  861. container,

  862. but it's

  863. never been

  864. limited to

  865. that.

  866. His influence

  867. has gone

  868. forth far,

  869. far,

  870. far beyond.

  871. So,

  872. look to

  873. Jesus for

  874. God's

  875. blessing.

  876. And we're

  877. going to

  878. see,

  879. beginning in

  880. Acts chapter

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  881. 8,

  882. through the

  883. end of the

  884. book,

  885. through chapter

  886. 28,

  887. that the

  888. effect of

  889. the gospel

  890. is that it

  891. spreads

  892. beyond

  893. Jerusalem,

  894. goes beyond

  895. the Jewish

  896. population,

  897. that in

  898. Abraham,

  899. all the

  900. peoples of

  901. the earth

  902. might be

  903. blessed.

  904. And the

  905. primary

  906. message of

  907. the gospel,

  908. God's

  909. blessing is

  910. for all

  911. who will

  912. believe in

  913. Jesus Christ.

  914. And so,

  915. that's where

  916. we stand

  917. in this

  918. gap.

  919. And that's

  920. why the

  921. offense of

  922. him speaking

  923. against the

  924. temple is

  925. so massive

  926. at this

  927. point.

  928. It's a

  929. tipping point

  930. for them.

  931. We're not

  932. going to see

  933. a lot of

  934. conversation

  935. about the

  936. temple

  937. beyond this,

  938. but that's

  939. why it

  940. brings this

  941. whole event

  942. and the

  943. first martyrdom

  944. to such a

  945. head in

  946. this.

  947. And then

  948. just note,

  949. just as I'm

  950. kind of

  951. walking through

  952. the passage,

  953. verse 15

  954. and 7-1,

  955. and gazing

  956. at him,

  957. all who

  958. sat in

  959. the council

  960. saw that

  961. his face

  962. was like

  963. the face

  964. of an

  965. angel.

  966. This

  967. picture of

  968. gazing,

  969. some of

  970. your

  971. translations

  972. might say

  973. staring,

  974. would be a

  975. good word

  976. for it.

  977. It's not

  978. a kind

  979. gazing,

  980. right?

  981. They're

  982. set him

  983. in the

  984. midst of

  985. the council

  986. and they're

  987. staring him

  988. down.

  989. They see

  990. that his

  991. face was

  992. like the

  993. face of

  994. an angel.

  995. Take that

  996. to mean

  997. that his

  998. face was

  999. illuminated.

  1000. And the

  1001. high priest

  1002. said,

  1003. of these

  1004. accusations,

  1005. are these

  1006. things so?

  1007. And next

  1008. week we'll

  1009. see him

  1010. launch into

  1011. his,

  1012. it's not

  1013. much of a

  1014. defense.

  1015. He kind of

  1016. instigates

  1017. himself,

  1018. but his

  1019. speech following

  1020. that question,

  1021. are these

  1022. things so?

  1023. So those are

  1024. the events.

  1025. This is the

  1026. things that

  1027. happened in

  1028. his arrest.

  1029. Let's look at

  1030. secondly now,

  1031. the Stephen

  1032. who was

  1033. arrested.

  1034. What kind

  1035. of man

  1036. was Stephen?

  1037. What was

  1038. his quality?

  1039. He is

  1040. certainly a

  1041. saint that

  1042. we should

  1043. emulate.

  1044. We need to

  1045. observe this

  1046. brief little

  1047. record,

  1048. the life and

  1049. ministry of

  1050. Stephen.

  1051. We would

  1052. all do

  1053. well to

  1054. look like

  1055. Stephen.

  1056. And I think

  1057. even a better

  1058. question would

  1059. be how was

  1060. the gospel

  1061. of Jesus

  1062. Christ shaping

  1063. him.

  1064. Beloved,

  1065. if you are

  1066. in Christ,

  1067. if you are

  1068. indeed in

  1069. Christ,

  1070. you are

  1071. being changed

  1072. one degree

  1073. of glory

  1074. to another.

  1075. We're getting

  1076. a little

  1077. better.

  1078. There's

  1079. sanctification,

  1080. right?

  1081. It's what that

  1082. process is

  1083. called.

  1084. We're improving

  1085. bit by bit.

  1086. And it doesn't

  1087. always feel like

  1088. that in a day.

  1089. I know that,

  1090. and I'm there

  1091. with you in

  1092. that.

  1093. It doesn't

  1094. always feel

  1095. that way in

  1096. a week or

  1097. maybe even

  1098. in a month

  1099. or possibly

  1100. in a year.

  1101. But if we

  1102. zoom way

  1103. back,

  1104. we take

  1105. God's

  1106. perspective

  1107. on our

  1108. lives,

  1109. our trajectory

  1110. is toward

  1111. holiness.

  1112. It's away

  1113. from sinfulness

  1114. and it's

  1115. toward holiness.

  1116. This process

  1117. is called

  1118. sanctification.

  1119. The biblical

  1120. view of

  1121. sanctification,

  1122. and I

  1123. unapologetically

  1124. say that,

  1125. the biblical

  1126. view of

  1127. sanctification

  1128. is called

  1129. progressive

  1130. sanctification.

  1131. It means that

  1132. we continue

  1133. to plod

  1134. that course.

  1135. We continue

  1136. to move

  1137. in that

  1138. direction,

  1139. to look

  1140. more like

  1141. Christ.

  1142. And it is

  1143. taught in

  1144. the scriptures

  1145. as a

  1146. synergistic

  1147. process.

  1148. And by that

  1149. I mean

  1150. that both

  1151. God and

  1152. us are

  1153. involved in

  1154. this process.

  1155. We're both

  1156. involved.

  1157. That's what

  1158. the scripture

  1159. teaches.

  1160. At times,

  1161. it really

  1162. seems to be

  1163. an apparent

  1164. paradox.

  1165. You've heard

  1166. that phrase

  1167. before.

  1168. A paradox

  1169. is a

  1170. statement

  1171. that is,

  1172. at least

  1173. it seems

  1174. to be on

  1175. the surface,

  1176. self-contradictory.

  1177. The scripture

  1178. doesn't conflict

  1179. with itself,

  1180. so it's an

  1181. apparent paradox.

  1182. It's not,

  1183. but it seems

  1184. to be.

  1185. And many

  1186. people have

  1187. tried to

  1188. wrestle through

  1189. the logic

  1190. of these

  1191. things,

  1192. and many

  1193. heresies

  1194. have arisen

  1195. from it.

  1196. If not

  1197. heresies,

  1198. at very

  1199. least,

  1200. erroneous

  1201. teaching on

  1202. the matter.

  1203. There are

  1204. some things

  1205. that are

  1206. very difficult

  1207. for our

  1208. minds to

  1209. reconcile.

  1210. So we

  1211. step back

  1212. away from

  1213. the scripture,

  1214. and rather

  1215. than standing

  1216. over it

  1217. in judgment,

  1218. we stand

  1219. underneath it

  1220. and let it

  1221. speak to us.

  1222. Why has

  1223. God revealed

  1224. himself to

  1225. us?

  1226. Why has

  1227. he shown

  1228. us the

  1229. process of

  1230. sanctification

  1231. in this

  1232. way?

  1233. The way

  1234. that the

  1235. gospel works

  1236. in to

  1237. us holiness.

  1238. I can't give

  1239. you all the

  1240. answers to that.

  1241. I don't know

  1242. that I have

  1243. all the answers

  1244. or that I

  1245. have the

  1246. time this

  1247. morning,

  1248. but I

  1249. appreciate

  1250. that the

  1251. scripture

  1252. itself doesn't

  1253. always try to

  1254. wrestle it

  1255. out.

  1256. There's a

  1257. wonderful

  1258. example of

  1259. this if

  1260. you'd like

  1261. to see

  1262. it,

  1263. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1264. chapter 2.

  1265. Paul states

  1266. the one and

  1267. the other

  1268. side by

  1269. side.

  1270. Now let me

  1271. just sum up,

  1272. if you're

  1273. turning there,

  1274. what I mean

  1275. by this.

  1276. We are being

  1277. perfected by

  1278. the power of

  1279. God and the

  1280. gospel of

  1281. Jesus Christ

  1282. through the

  1283. working of

  1284. the Spirit

  1285. in our

  1286. lives.

  1287. We would

  1288. of course

  1289. give all

  1290. glory and

  1291. honor to

  1292. Christ in

  1293. the process

  1294. of that.

  1295. We don't

  1296. take the

  1297. ownership

  1298. for that

  1299. kind of

  1300. thing,

  1301. but you

  1302. were not

  1303. made perfect

  1304. by sitting

  1305. around.

  1306. It doesn't

  1307. happen.

  1308. You don't

  1309. sit on your

  1310. hands and

  1311. go,

  1312. well,

  1313. God said

  1314. he's going

  1315. to do it.

  1316. Just waiting.

  1317. I promise

  1318. you that God

  1319. will never

  1320. animate you

  1321. in the morning

  1322. and cause

  1323. you to swing

  1324. your legs out

  1325. of bed and

  1326. cause you to

  1327. pick up the

  1328. scripture in a

  1329. way that you're

  1330. not part of

  1331. your faculty,

  1332. right?

  1333. That you go and

  1334. you open it and

  1335. you begin to read

  1336. it and you go,

  1337. what is happening

  1338. to me?

  1339. I don't even

  1340. know what's

  1341. going on right

  1342. now.

  1343. But I will

  1344. say when you

  1345. wake up in the

  1346. morning and you

  1347. swing your legs

  1348. out of bed and

  1349. you go and you

  1350. open the scripture

  1351. and you begin to

  1352. read it,

  1353. that God has

  1354. worked in you

  1355. for this very

  1356. thing to happen.

  1357. You get the

  1358. apparent paradox

  1359. in play.

  1360. So listen to what

  1361. Paul says,

  1362. Philippians chapter

  1363. verse 12,

  1364. man's responsibility,

  1365. verse 13,

  1366. God's empowering

  1367. work.

  1368. Therefore,

  1369. my beloved,

  1370. as you have

  1371. always obeyed,

  1372. so now,

  1373. not only as in

  1374. my presence,

  1375. but much more

  1376. in my absence,

  1377. work out your

  1378. own salvation

  1379. with fear and

  1380. trembling.

  1381. Why?

  1382. For it is God

  1383. who works in

  1384. you,

  1385. both to will

  1386. and to work

  1387. for his good

  1388. pleasure.

  1389. Verse 12,

  1390. you work,

  1391. verse 13,

  1392. God works.

  1393. So how is it

  1394. that he does

  1395. this?

  1396. And this takes

  1397. place in our

  1398. lives in four

  1399. broad areas,

  1400. and I promise

  1401. I'm coming back

  1402. to Stephen,

  1403. because it's

  1404. working in

  1405. Stephen's life,

  1406. in four broad

  1407. areas.

  1408. We could classify

  1409. these in many

  1410. different ways.

  1411. There's a lot of

  1412. wonderful books

  1413. on it that

  1414. classify what's

  1415. often called

  1416. the means of

  1417. grace.

  1418. I like to call

  1419. them habits

  1420. of grace,

  1421. because we play

  1422. apart in

  1423. these things.

  1424. So there's

  1425. other ways to

  1426. categorize this.

  1427. I'm going to

  1428. categorize it in

  1429. four broad areas,

  1430. and we're going

  1431. to talk about

  1432. this a lot

  1433. in the coming

  1434. year.

  1435. And those four

  1436. areas are

  1437. gospel conviction,

  1438. gospel character,

  1439. gospel community,

  1440. and gospel

  1441. commission.

  1442. You've already

  1443. got to memorize,

  1444. because they all

  1445. start with C.

  1446. Gospel conviction,

  1447. character,

  1448. community,

  1449. and mission.

  1450. These are means

  1451. of grace,

  1452. or habits of

  1453. grace, as I

  1454. prefer.

  1455. Things that we

  1456. are involved in,

  1457. and God uses

  1458. them to bring

  1459. about holiness

  1460. in us.

  1461. And so I want

  1462. to look at

  1463. Stephen and see

  1464. how the gospel

  1465. was at work

  1466. in these ways.

  1467. So number one,

  1468. gospel conviction.

  1469. Let's back up

  1470. in our text just

  1471. a little bit to

  1472. Acts 6, 5.

  1473. The disciples

  1474. are presented

  1475. with this solution

  1476. to the issue

  1477. of the tables

  1478. not being served,

  1479. and it pleases

  1480. them, and they

  1481. choose Stephen,

  1482. a man full of

  1483. faith,

  1484. and of the

  1485. Holy Spirit.

  1486. The response

  1487. that Stephen

  1488. gives to the

  1489. council in

  1490. chapter 7,

  1491. the full speech

  1492. that he gives

  1493. shows that

  1494. he had faith

  1495. that God

  1496. ruled history.

  1497. He believed

  1498. in God's

  1499. sovereign rule.

  1500. Now, I know

  1501. we haven't read

  1502. the text,

  1503. but we're going

  1504. to get there

  1505. next week.

  1506. I encourage

  1507. you to read

  1508. it this week

  1509. and see that

  1510. Stephen had

  1511. faith.

  1512. He believed

  1513. that God

  1514. ruled history.

  1515. He believed

  1516. in a sovereign

  1517. plan.

  1518. He could say

  1519. with Paul,

  1520. as Paul says

  1521. in Romans 14,

  1522. 8,

  1523. for if we live,

  1524. we live to

  1525. the Lord,

  1526. and if we die,

  1527. we die to

  1528. the Lord.

  1529. So then,

  1530. whether we live

  1531. or whether we

  1532. die,

  1533. we are the

  1534. Lord.

  1535. And he had

  1536. this conviction

  1537. of that that

  1538. allowed him

  1539. to press into.

  1540. Remember,

  1541. he's going

  1542. around doing

  1543. signs and

  1544. wonders,

  1545. and he's

  1546. preaching the

  1547. gospel of

  1548. Jesus Christ

  1549. already in the

  1550. face of

  1551. opposition.

  1552. He already

  1553. knows that

  1554. it's happening.

  1555. We've already

  1556. had Peter

  1557. and John

  1558. arrested.

  1559. We've already

  1560. had the

  1561. apostles arrested

  1562. And flogged!

  1563. They're being

  1564. told,

  1565. do not speak

  1566. in the name

  1567. of Christ.

  1568. And this

  1569. man of

  1570. conviction,

  1571. trusting in

  1572. the Lord's

  1573. sovereign rule,

  1574. presses on

  1575. in to

  1576. these things.

  1577. Stephen had

  1578. faith that

  1579. Jesus was

  1580. the fulfillment

  1581. of messianic

  1582. prophecy.

  1583. He believed,

  1584. was convicted

  1585. that Jesus

  1586. was,

  1587. is,

  1588. the Christ.

  1589. Acts 7,

  1590. 52,

  1591. the end of

  1592. his speech.

  1593. Which of

  1594. the prophets

  1595. did your

  1596. fathers not

  1597. persecute?

  1598. And they

  1599. killed those

  1600. who announced

  1601. beforehand the

  1602. coming of

  1603. the righteous

  1604. one,

  1605. whom you

  1606. have now

  1607. betrayed and

  1608. murdered.

  1609. He knew that

  1610. Jesus is

  1611. the Christ.

  1612. He was

  1613. convicted of

  1614. that.

  1615. Stephen believed

  1616. that Jesus

  1617. had risen and

  1618. was at the

  1619. right hand of

  1620. the Father,

  1621. and that he

  1622. would stand

  1623. and judge

  1624. the earth.

  1625. Again,

  1626. Acts 7,

    Acts 7:55

  1627. verse 55 and

  1628. 56,

  1629. full of the

  1630. Holy Spirit,

  1631. Stephen gazes

  1632. into heaven,

  1633. sees the

  1634. glory of God

  1635. and Jesus

  1636. standing at

  1637. the right hand

  1638. of God,

  1639. and he

  1640. says,

  1641. behold,

  1642. I see the

  1643. heavens opened

  1644. and the

  1645. Son of Man

  1646. standing at

  1647. the right

  1648. hand of

  1649. God.

  1650. He believed

  1651. in the

  1652. promises of

  1653. God found

  1654. in the

  1655. Scripture.

  1656. He was a

  1657. man of

  1658. conviction

  1659. because he

  1660. knew the

  1661. Scriptures

  1662. and he

  1663. believed them.

  1664. He knew

  1665. the Scriptures

  1666. and he

  1667. believed them.

  1668. Stephen was

  1669. also full

  1670. of the

  1671. Holy Spirit.

  1672. He was

  1673. filled up

  1674. with the

  1675. Holy Spirit.

  1676. And as we

  1677. have said

  1678. before,

  1679. the opportunity

  1680. for this

  1681. is not

  1682. unique

  1683. amongst

  1684. followers of

  1685. Christ.

  1686. We don't

  1687. have varying

  1688. classification

  1689. of Christian,

  1690. those who

  1691. are filled

  1692. and aren't

  1693. filled.

  1694. If you are

  1695. a believer

  1696. in Jesus

  1697. Christ,

  1698. you have

  1699. been baptized

  1700. in the

  1701. Spirit and

  1702. we all

  1703. have the

  1704. opportunity

  1705. to be

  1706. filled.

  1707. And it

  1708. should not

  1709. be a

  1710. rare

  1711. occurrence

  1712. or reserved

  1713. in any

  1714. way.

  1715. To be

  1716. filled

  1717. with the

  1718. Spirit is

  1719. to have

  1720. the Word

  1721. of Christ

  1722. dwell in

  1723. you richly

  1724. in a way

  1725. that brings

  1726. about

  1727. change.

  1728. Romans 8,

  1729. 3 and 4.

  1730. For God

  1731. is done

  1732. with the

  1733. law,

  1734. weakened by

  1735. the flesh,

  1736. could not

  1737. do by

  1738. sending

  1739. His own

  1740. Son in

  1741. the likeness

  1742. of sinful

  1743. flesh,

  1744. and for

  1745. sin He

  1746. condemned

  1747. sin in

  1748. the flesh,

  1749. in order

  1750. that the

  1751. righteous

  1752. requirement of

  1753. the law

  1754. might be

  1755. fulfilled in

  1756. us who

  1757. walk not

  1758. according to

  1759. the flesh,

  1760. but according

  1761. to the

  1762. Spirit.

  1763. The great

  1764. evidence of

  1765. being filled

  1766. with the

  1767. Spirit is

  1768. obedience.

  1769. Being so

  1770. captivated with

  1771. Christ that

  1772. we are

  1773. obedient to

  1774. His call.

  1775. It's

  1776. following

  1777. our Lord.

  1778. I've read

  1779. this to you

  1780. before,

  1781. I just love

  1782. it too much

  1783. not to read

  1784. it again.

  1785. I think this

  1786. may be number

  1787. three in the

  1788. book of Acts.

  1789. Dan Phillips,

  1790. a contemporary

  1791. pastor,

  1792. said this,

  1793. Show me a

  1794. person obsessed

  1795. with the

  1796. Holy Spirit

  1797. and His

  1798. gifts,

  1799. real or

  1800. imagined,

  1801. and I

  1802. will show

  1803. you a

  1804. person not

  1805. filled with

  1806. the Holy

  1807. Spirit.

  1808. Show me a

  1809. person focused

  1810. on the

  1811. personal work

  1812. of Jesus

  1813. Christ,

  1814. never tiring

  1815. of learning

  1816. about Him,

  1817. thinking about

  1818. Him,

  1819. boasting of

  1820. Him,

  1821. speaking about

  1822. and for

  1823. thrilled and

  1824. entranced with

  1825. His perfections

  1826. and beauty,

  1827. finding ways

  1828. to serve and

  1829. exalt Him,

  1830. tirelessly

  1831. exploring ways

  1832. to spend and

  1833. be spent for

  1834. Him,

  1835. growing in

  1836. character to

  1837. be more and

  1838. more like

  1839. Him,

  1840. and I will

  1841. show you a

  1842. person who

  1843. is filled

  1844. with the

  1845. Holy Spirit.

  1846. Not to be

  1847. the normative

  1848. part of our

  1849. Christian living,

  1850. that we be

  1851. people of

  1852. faith who

  1853. are filled

  1854. with the

  1855. Spirit of

  1856. God,

  1857. and we see

  1858. the evidencing

  1859. of that in

  1860. obedience.

  1861. We hold

  1862. our lives up

  1863. to the

  1864. Scripture,

  1865. and we go,

  1866. yes,

  1867. I find

  1868. myself in

  1869. this,

  1870. failing at

  1871. times,

  1872. but moving

  1873. progressively away

  1874. from my sin

  1875. and toward

  1876. holiness.

  1877. So what part

  1878. do we play

  1879. in gospel

  1880. conviction?

  1881. What's our

  1882. part?

  1883. If it's

  1884. synergistic,

  1885. right,

  1886. being perfected

  1887. by the

  1888. gospel,

  1889. what part

  1890. do we play?

  1891. We read,

  1892. and we study,

  1893. and we meditate

  1894. on the Word

  1895. of God.

  1896. Beloved,

  1897. we're to be a

  1898. people of the

  1899. Word.

  1900. We're to be

  1901. saturated by

  1902. this book,

  1903. and it's

  1904. not nearly as

  1905. difficult as

  1906. we all make

  1907. it out to

  1908. be.

  1909. We make

  1910. far too

  1911. many excuses

  1912. for our

  1913. biblical

  1914. illiteracy.

  1915. The number

  1916. one I hear

  1917. is time

  1918. management.

  1919. I just

  1920. need you to

  1921. pray for

  1922. time management.

  1923. Not what

  1924. you need

  1925. prayer for.

  1926. You need

  1927. prayer for

  1928. the idolatry

  1929. of your

  1930. heart.

  1931. It's a

  1932. worship issue.

  1933. The fact that

  1934. we don't take

  1935. this thing up

  1936. and read,

  1937. and I'm in

  1938. the boat

  1939. with you

  1940. guys,

  1941. right?

  1942. It's an

  1943. issue of

  1944. worship.

  1945. It's an

  1946. issue of

  1947. priority.

  1948. My old

  1949. self is an

  1950. idol factory.

  1951. I picture it

  1952. that way in

  1953. my mind,

  1954. little

  1955. smokestacks,

  1956. chukka,

  1957. chukka,

  1958. chukka,

  1959. chukka,

  1960. turning out,

  1961. new things

  1962. for me to

  1963. worship.

  1964. It takes

  1965. all these

  1966. varying forms

  1967. all the

  1968. time.

  1969. God has

  1970. built a

  1971. new wing,

  1972. right?

  1973. And it

  1974. produces

  1975. righteousness.

  1976. And he

  1977. is working

  1978. at destroying

  1979. that part

  1980. of the

  1981. factory that

  1982. I seem so

  1983. bent on

  1984. keeping

  1985. running.

  1986. And you

  1987. know why

  1988. we don't

  1989. get in

  1990. here and

  1991. read this

  1992. more often?

  1993. Because this

  1994. screws up

  1995. the idol

  1996. factory,

  1997. right?

  1998. It throws

  1999. wrenches

  2000. into the

  2001. idol factory.

  2002. It puts

  2003. the brakes

  2004. on that

  2005. production,

  2006. and it

  2007. messes with

  2008. our worship

  2009. of ourselves.

  2010. that's why

  2011. you don't

  2012. pick up the

  2013. word of

  2014. God.

  2015. That's why

  2016. you don't

  2017. read it

  2018. more.

  2019. It's an

  2020. issue of

  2021. worship.

  2022. Beloved,

  2023. we need to

  2024. be in

  2025. this book.

  2026. And I

  2027. know it

  2028. can be

  2029. daunting.

  2030. It's so

  2031. big and

  2032. there's so

  2033. much to

  2034. learn and

  2035. understand.

  2036. Don't

  2037. worry about

  2038. it.

  2039. Pick it

  2040. up today

  2041. and tomorrow

  2042. and the

  2043. next day

  2044. and you

  2045. will be

  2046. enriched

  2047. by it.

  2048. I can

  2049. promise

  2050. you

  2051. that.

  2052. Study it.

  2053. Study it

  2054. often.

  2055. Study it

  2056. well.

  2057. Read it

  2058. and let it

  2059. read you

  2060. and you

  2061. will be

  2062. changed

  2063. by it.

  2064. Gospel

  2065. conviction

  2066. produces

  2067. gospel

  2068. character.

  2069. It

  2070. produces

  2071. gospel

  2072. character.

  2073. Verse 8,

  2074. Stephen's

  2075. full of

  2076. grace and

  2077. power.

  2078. He's doing

  2079. these wonderful

  2080. works.

  2081. Verse 10,

  2082. this opposition

  2083. to him

  2084. couldn't

  2085. withstand

  2086. the wisdom

  2087. and the

  2088. spirit

  2089. with which

  2090. he was

  2091. speaking.

  2092. He's

  2093. full.

  2094. He's

  2095. amply

  2096. supplied

  2097. with

  2098. grace.

  2099. He's

  2100. amply

  2101. supplied

  2102. with

  2103. power.

  2104. He's

  2105. amply

  2106. supplied

  2107. with

  2108. wisdom.

  2109. Not in

  2110. a vacuum

  2111. but because

  2112. of the

  2113. spirit of

  2114. God

  2115. using

  2116. the

  2117. word

  2118. of

  2119. God

  2120. to

  2121. work

  2122. in

  2123. and

  2124. through

  2125. his

  2126. life.

  2127. And

  2128. he is

  2129. courageous.

  2130. Gospel

  2131. character.

  2132. Thing we

  2133. can note

  2134. of Stephen.

  2135. He is

  2136. courageous.

  2137. First for

  2138. preaching the

  2139. gospel at

  2140. all in

  2141. this

  2142. environment.

  2143. Knowing

  2144. full well

  2145. that there

  2146. was an

  2147. opposition

  2148. against

  2149. them.

  2150. Beloved,

  2151. we are

  2152. in the

  2153. same

  2154. place.

  2155. You don't

  2156. experience

  2157. opposition to

  2158. the preaching

  2159. of the

  2160. gospel because

  2161. you're not

  2162. preaching

  2163. the gospel.

  2164. He sits

  2165. amongst this

  2166. council,

  2167. 70 men,

  2168. the high

  2169. court of

  2170. the day,

  2171. plus the

  2172. high priest,

  2173. and they

  2174. sit in a

  2175. semicircle

  2176. around him

  2177. and he

  2178. stands in

  2179. the midst

  2180. of him

  2181. and they

  2182. stare him

  2183. down.

  2184. Verse 15,

  2185. they're gazing

  2186. at him,

  2187. they're

  2188. staring

  2189. down.

  2190. Have you

  2191. ever been

  2192. in your

  2193. life in

  2194. a situation

  2195. where you're

  2196. being stared

  2197. at?

  2198. A wonderful

  2199. little example

  2200. of poor

  2201. Graham falling

  2202. off the

  2203. stage this

  2204. morning and

  2205. so embarrassed

  2206. because everybody,

  2207. at least he

  2208. thought everybody,

  2209. was looking at

  2210. him.

  2211. At the dinner

  2212. table sometimes,

  2213. my four-year-old

  2214. Judah will go,

  2215. why is everybody

  2216. staring at me?

  2217. And we'll go,

  2218. because you're

  2219. talking,

  2220. what's wrong

  2221. with you?

  2222. But he

  2223. suddenly gets

  2224. super self-conscious

  2225. and really,

  2226. and it's difficult

  2227. to stand up in

  2228. that kind of

  2229. environment,

  2230. right?

  2231. Everybody's

  2232. staring at you

  2233. and this is

  2234. such a higher

  2235. degree of that,

  2236. right?

  2237. He's on trial,

  2238. right?

  2239. They have been

  2240. warned.

  2241. We have already

  2242. seen that they

  2243. wanted to kill

  2244. the apostles.

  2245. And here he is

  2246. and he stands

  2247. amongst them

  2248. and when they

  2249. see his face,

  2250. he's not hiding

  2251. his face,

  2252. he's looking back

  2253. and his face

  2254. is shining

  2255. like the face

  2256. of an angel.

  2257. What courage!

  2258. And we'll get

  2259. into next week

  2260. his speech

  2261. and man,

  2262. is it good.

  2263. Right?

  2264. He holds

  2265. no punches.

  2266. Right?

  2267. This Stephen,

  2268. the deacon

  2269. of the church

  2270. standing before

  2271. the high religious

  2272. rulers of that

  2273. day and boy

  2274. does he go

  2275. for the jugular.

  2276. His face

  2277. is glowing

  2278. in the midst

  2279. of their stares.

  2280. And there's only

  2281. one other person

  2282. in biblical history

  2283. that this happens

  2284. to and that's

  2285. Moses in Exodus

  2286. 33.

  2287. Remember he asked

  2288. to see the glory

  2289. of God.

  2290. God says that

  2291. if you fully see

  2292. my glory,

  2293. you'll die.

  2294. So he lets him

  2295. see his back

  2296. and just that

  2297. causes his face

  2298. to shine for days.

  2299. The people of Israel

  2300. can't even look

  2301. at his face

  2302. it shines so bright

2303. so he wears a veil

  2304. but slowly over time

  2305. that fades away.

2306. I think the same thing

  2307. is happening here

  2308. with Stephen

  2309. and I'm reaching

  2310. a little bit

  2311. but I believe

  2312. that that's what's

  2313. going on

  2314. in this case

  2315. that he's shining

  2316. like one of God's

  2317. shining ones,

  2318. one of the angels.

  2319. in response

  2320. to this great

  2321. opposition

  2322. and this glaring

  2323. that they're doing

  2324. on his part

  2325. these men of darkness

  2326. they see a man

  2327. of light.

2328. I think it helps us

  2329. get some idea

  2330. about this.

  2331. Paul writes

  2332. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  2333. chapter 3

  2334. beginning of verse 7

  2335. now if the ministry

  2336. of death

  2337. carved in letters

  2338. on stones

  2339. we're talking about

  2340. the law

  2341. the law

  2342. brings death

  2343. convicts of sin

  2344. now if the ministry

  2345. of death

  2346. carved in letters

  2347. on stone

  2348. came with such glory

  2349. that the Israelites

  2350. could not gaze

  2351. at Moses' face

  2352. because of its glory

  2353. so the shining

  2354. the glory of God

2355. shining out of his face

  2356. they couldn't gaze

  2357. at his face

  2358. which was being brought

  2359. to an end

  2360. verse 8

  2361. will not the ministry

  2362. of the spirit

  2363. have even more

  2364. glory?

2365. For if there was glory

  2366. in the ministry

  2367. of condemnation

  2368. the ministry

  2369. of righteousness

  2370. must far

  2371. exceed it

  2372. in glory

  2373. indeed in this case

  2374. what once had glory

  2375. has come to have

  2376. no glory at all

  2377. because of the glory

  2378. that surpasses it

2379. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  2380. verse 11

2381. for if what was being

  2382. brought to an end

  2383. came with glory

  2384. much more

  2385. will what is

  2386. permanent

  2387. have glory

  2388. so Stephen

  2389. stands

  2390. as this man

  2391. of gospel

  2392. character

  2393. at the cusp

  2394. of the launching

  2395. out

  2396. of the gospel

  2397. of Jesus Christ

  2398. and I think

  2399. that's why

  2400. God

  2401. does the same

  2402. thing that he did

  2403. with Moses

  2404. in letting his

  2405. face shine

  2406. as well

  2407. in the same

  2408. way

  2409. so we see

  2410. gospel

  2411. conviction

  2412. and we see

  2413. gospel

  2414. character

  2415. in Stephen's

  2416. life

  2417. and for the

  2418. sake of time

  2419. we're going to

  2420. pick up the

  2421. last two

  2422. next week

  2423. but I'm going to

  2424. find a way

  2425. to do that

  2426. which would be

  2427. gospel community

  2428. and gospel

  2429. commission

  2430. beloved we need to

  2431. take careful note

  2432. of Stephen's

  2433. life

  2434. we need to ask

  2435. ourselves

  2436. what part

  2437. are we to play

  2438. in the

  2439. perfecting of our

  2440. lives lives

  2441. lived that are

  2442. not wasted

  2443. and are lived

  2444. for the kingdom

  2445. of God

  2446. for the glory

  2447. of God

  2448. the service

  2449. of the gospel

  2450. for the love

  2451. of others

  2452. around us

  2453. what do we need

  2454. to pick up

  2455. and do

  2456. what is our

  2457. part in

  2458. sanctification

  2459. that the gospel

  2460. might have

  2461. its effect

  2462. in us

  2463. and through

  2464. us

  2465. to those

  2466. around us

  2467. let's pray

  2468. together
