  1. Over the past two weeks, we have looked at the brief life and ministry of Stephen, who is this very important transitionary character in Luke's record and life.

  2. The intensive work of the gospel is about to go forth here in the history that's recorded for us by Luke. The teaching of the apostles has been filling all of Jerusalem. Peter's been the primary character in the narrative. We're soon to see the shift from Peter to Paul as Paul begins to take the gospel to the Gentiles.

  3. It leaves the wall, it goes out of the gate, and that hinges here on Stephen. The last two weeks, we've looked at Stephen's arrest and his inquiry. Chapter 6, verse 8 through 7, verse 1.

  4. And you'll recall at the beginning of chapter 6, there's an issue that arises in the church. The widows of the Hellenists, that is the Greek-speaking Jews, are not being served, and so the first deacons are called, and Stephen is amongst them.

  5. Not long after this, we see, beginning in verse 8, that Stephen has a broadening ministry, not the service of tables, but he's also doing great wonders and signs among the people.

  6. And we understand, as we are good students of the Scripture, that any time biblical signs and wonders are being done, they're accompanied by the preaching of the gospel.

  7. We see this as a consistent pattern in the life of Christ. We see this as a consistent pattern throughout the book of Acts.

  8. And although it's not recorded here by Luke, it's proper to assume that. And we can see, beginning in verse 9, that this commotion begins between Stephen and some of the synagogues of the freedmen, the Cyrenians, the Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia.

  9. These would all have been Hellenist Jewish populations. These were all Greek-speaking Jews.

  10. And they dispute with him, not about the things he was doing, but about the things he was saying.

  11. And they, unable to dispute with him and withstand his wisdom, they raise up false witnesses,

  12. and they bring him before the council, the Sanhedrin, the religious ruling Jews of the day.

  13. And the question is asked of him, chapter 7, verse 1, are these things so?

  14. What is the high priest referring to?

  15. The charges that are made against him, made in these three pairs, beginning in verse 11, and then in verse 13, and in verse 14.

  16. They're repeated and expanded upon.

  17. And the initial accusation made in verse 11 is that Stephen is speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God,

  18. or irreverent words against Moses and God.

  19. And as we look in verse 13 and verse 14, we saw that he explains to us what this means.

  20. To speak blasphemous words against Moses is to speak against the law and the customs that were handed down by Moses.

  21. And to speak blasphemous words against God is to speak against the temple.

  22. So the high priest asks the question, are these things so?

  23. Defend yourself, Stephen.

  24. What do you have to say of these accusations?

  25. And we're going to look at his response and the result of his response this morning.

  26. And before we get into our text, I want to remind you, I've asked you over the last two weeks to keep two general lessons in mind as we look at the life and ministry of Stephen.

  27. Number one, a life given in service to God is a life that is not wasted.

  28. I've shown you that God uses Stephen and the persecution that arises as a result of Stephen's life and ministry to spread the gospel across continents in the next generation.

  29. And we're a result.

  30. Those of us who are found in Christ now are a result of the life and ministry of Stephen.

  31. So a life given in service to God is a life that is not wasted.

  32. And secondly, the significance of such a life cannot be measured by its short-term gains, its breadth, or its length.

  33. This very short ministry, this ministry that doesn't seem to yield much fruit, ends in Stephen's martyrdom, has such great reach and effect.

  34. God uses it in such mighty ways.

  35. And as we consider our own lives beloved, we need to be thinking, is our life given in service to God the way Stephen's was?

  36. And have we been measuring the way in which we give our lives to God in terms of short-term gains, breadth, or length?

  37. So I'm going to read the text this morning.

  38. Our text will be Acts 7, verse 2 through 60.

    Acts 7:2–60

  39. Yes, verse 2 through 60.

  40. And there's a temptation at this point to not read the text.

  41. There's a temptation just to highlight some things throughout the text.

  42. And many faithful preachers have done that.

  43. And I find that to be an acceptable practice.

  44. I'm not suggesting if you have a favorite preacher who doesn't read the entire text to you that he's wrong in doing so.

  45. But I feel compelled to read the entire text to you because the power that the Spirit wields in our lives comes from the Scripture

  46. and true things that I may say about the Scripture, but it's the Word of God that needs to be saturating our meetings together.

  47. So I think it's important for us to actually open the text and actually read the text and consider it before I begin to make comments about it.

  48. Yes, I timed myself.

  49. It takes about seven minutes to read the text.

  50. That's not too long.

  51. Let me ask, you know, I'll try to read it well for you.

  52. I'm reading from the ESV.

  53. You may find if you don't have an ESV, it's hard to follow along.

  54. You might want to just listen.

  55. If you have an ESV, it may help for you to follow along.

  56. But let me ask that you try to clear your mind and engage in what's actually happening.

  57. So here's Stephen standing before the Sanhedrin.

  58. They would have sat in a semicircle around him.

  59. Seventy men, high rulers of the day, dressed in their fancy garb.

  60. This was the Supreme Court of the day.

  61. The high priest sitting behind him.

  62. He's asked this question.

  63. These accusations have been made.

  64. Are these things so?

  65. And Stephen says, and he doesn't really defend himself.

  66. I don't want to say that at the outset.

  67. He doesn't really give a defense, but he launches into this speech.

  68. So let's listen carefully as I read.

  69. Beginning in verse 2, and Stephen said,

  70. Brothers and fathers, hear me.

  71. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran

  72. and said to him,

  73. Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land I will show you.

  74. Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran.

  75. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.

  76. Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length,

  77. but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

  78. And God spoke to this effect, that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others

  79. who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

  80. But I will judge the nation that they serve, said God,

  81. and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.

  82. And he gave him the covenant of circumcision.

  83. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day.

  84. And Isaac became the father of Jacob and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

  85. And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt.

  86. But God was with him and rescued him out of all his afflictions

  87. and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt,

  88. who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.

  89. Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan and great affliction,

  90. and our fathers could find no food.

  91. But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt,

  92. he sent out our fathers on their first visit.

  93. And on the second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers,

  94. and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.

  95. And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his kindred,

  96. seventy-five persons in all.

  97. And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers.

  98. And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver

  99. from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

  100. But at the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham,

  101. the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

  102. until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph.

  103. He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants

  104. so they would not be kept alive.

  105. At this time, Moses was born, and he was beautiful in God's sight.

  106. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house.

  107. And when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.

  108. And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians,

  109. and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

  110. When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers,

  111. the children of Israel.

  112. And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man

  113. and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.

  114. He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving him salvation by his hand,

  115. but they did not understand.

  116. And on the following day, he appeared to them as they were quarreling

  117. and tried to reconcile them, saying,

  118. Men, you are brothers.

  119. Why do you wrong each other?

  120. But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying,

  121. Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

  122. Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?

  123. At this retort, Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian,

  124. where he became the father of two sons.

  125. Now, when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai

  126. in a flame of fire in a bush.

  127. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight.

  128. And as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord.

  129. I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.

  130. And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.

  131. Then the Lord said to him,

  132. Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

  133. I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt,

  134. and I have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them.

  135. And now, come, I will send you to Egypt.

  136. This Moses, whom they rejected, saying,

  137. Who made you a ruler and a judge?

  138. This man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

  139. This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea

  140. and in the wilderness for forty years.

  141. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites,

  142. God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

  143. This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai.

  144. And with our fathers, he received living oracles to give us.

  145. Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside,

  146. and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,

  147. saying to Aaron,

  148. Make for us gods who will go before us.

  149. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt,

  150. we do not know what has become of him.

  151. And they made a calf in those days,

  152. and offered a sacrifice to the idol,

  153. and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.

  154. But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven,

  155. as it is written in the book of the prophets.

  156. Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices during the forty years in the wilderness,

  157. O house of Israel?

  158. You took up the tent of Moloch,

  159. and the star of your God, Raphon,

  160. the images that you made to worship,

  161. and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.

  162. Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness,

  163. just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it,

  164. according to the pattern that he had seen.

  165. Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua,

  166. and they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers.

  167. So it was until the days of David,

  168. who found favor in the sight of God,

  169. and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

  170. But it was Solomon who built a house for him.

  171. Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands,

  172. as the prophet says,

  173. Heaven is my throne,

  174. and the earth is my footstool.

  175. What kind of house will you build for me,

  176. said the Lord,

  177. or what is the place of my rest?

  178. Did not my hand make all these things?

  179. You stiff-necked people,

  180. uncircumcised in heart and ears,

  181. you always resist the Holy Spirit.

  182. As your fathers did,

  183. so do you.

  184. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute?

  185. And they killed those who announced beforehand

  186. the coming of the righteous one,

  187. whom you have now betrayed and murdered.

  188. You who received the law as delivered by angels,

  189. and did not keep it.

  190. Now when they heard these things,

  191. they were enraged,

  192. and they ground their teeth at him.

  193. But he, full of the Holy Spirit,

  194. gazed into heaven,

  195. and saw the glory of God,

  196. and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

  197. And he said,

  198. Behold, I see the heavens opened,

  199. and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.

  200. But they cried out with a loud voice,

  201. and stopped their ears,

  202. and rushed together at him.

  203. Then they cast him out of the city,

  204. and stoned him.

  205. And the witnesses laid down their garments

  206. at the feet of a young man named Saul.

  207. And as they were stoning Stephen,

  208. he called out,

  209. Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

  210. And falling to his knees,

  211. he cried out with a loud voice,

  212. Lord, do not hold this sin against them.

  213. And when he had said this,

  214. he fell asleep.

  215. Beloved, this is God's Word to us.

  216. It was written for His glory,

  217. and for our good.

  218. We would all do well to listen to it,

  219. in order to believe its promises,

  220. and obey its commands.

  221. Now, there's a lot before us.

  222. I certainly can't,

  223. and won't deal with this verse by verse this morning.

  224. We'll try to take it thematically.

  225. And I want to use kind of a simple structure

  226. for such a large text.

  227. I'd like you to hear that structure in advance.

  228. You may not be able to write this down just yet,

  229. but I want you to hear it

  230. just so you know where we're headed.

  231. Now, structure will be in four parts.

  232. First, Stephen's brief history of Israel.

  233. Second, Stephen's conclusion from Israel's history.

  234. Third, God's approval of Stephen's conclusion.

  235. And fourth, the council's reaction to Stephen's conclusion.

  236. So Stephen begins in this speech,

  237. not really a defense as you'll soon see,

  238. but in this speech to give a brief history of Israel.

  239. And that is the major portion of our text,

  240. verse 2 through 50.

  241. And just as an aside,

  242. I find it really astounding

  243. that he's standing before the religious elite of the day

  244. and he repeats to them their history.

  245. But he does so to make a point,

  246. as we'll see in his conclusion.

  247. He begins in verse 2 by saying,

  248. Brothers and fathers, hear me.

  249. And I want to note this

  250. because it's the candor of the way in which he's speaking

  251. and the heart that follows along with it.

  252. Stephen shows in this,

  253. by calling them brothers,

  254. his solidarity with them.

  255. He recognizes that he himself is also a Jew,

  256. that this is his history that he is about to speak.

  257. And he also shows them respect

  258. in calling them fathers.

  259. And this sets the tone for what he's about to say.

  260. And he goes through a number of characters,

  261. kind of high points in Israel's history.

  262. And he begins with Abraham in verses 2 through 8.

  263. And in speaking about Abraham,

  264. Stephen emphasizes the divine work

  265. of bringing Israel to be

  266. and to be in the land

  267. in which they're currently dwelling at this time.

  268. He emphasizes the fact

  269. that while Abraham was the means,

  270. that God was accomplishing his ends

  271. through the life of Abraham.

  272. Let me draw your attention to verse 4.

  273. Abraham's commanded to go to the land.

  274. Verse 4 says,

  275. Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans

  276. and lived in Haran,

  277. which is about halfway to where he was supposed to go.

  278. And after his father died,

  279. look at the way that Luke records this,

  280. the words of Stephen,

  281. and God removed him from there

  282. into this land in which you are now living.

  283. Stephen recognized that God was sovereign

  284. over redemptive history,

  285. over the history of Israel themselves.

  286. He emphasizes this as he speaks

  287. about Abraham to begin with.

  288. He then moves on to Joseph.

  289. I promise we're going to move quickly

  290. through these characters.

  291. Verses 9 through 16,

  292. in which Stephen expresses

  293. his understanding in God's sovereignty

  294. and bringing about Israel's movement

  295. to Egypt.

  296. The fulfillment of this promise

  297. that was given to Abraham,

  298. that there would be a people

  299. that would rule over them.

  300. Verse 9,

  301. And the patriarchs,

  302. jealous of Joseph,

  303. sold him to Egypt,

  304. but God was with him

  305. and rescued him

  306. out of all his afflictions

  307. and gave him favor

  308. and wisdom

  309. before Pharaoh.

  310. Sold into slavery,

  311. later put into a jail,

  312. sees visions and dreams,

  313. interprets things for Pharaoh,

  314. and he's put in charge

  315. of the whole land

  316. and in the process

  317. of gathering in

  318. and preparing for this famine

  319. that was going to come.

  320. This is the way in which

  321. God brings

  322. and brings about the promise

  323. that the great nation

  324. that he's bringing forth

  325. in Abraham

  326. would be ruled over

  327. in a foreign place.

  328. Stephen then spends

  329. the majority of his speech

  330. on Moses.

  331. Remember the accusation

  332. made against him

  333. that he's blaspheming

  334. against Moses.

  335. Verses 17 through 44.

  336. He speaks of God's work

  337. in Israel's increase

  338. and the slavery.

  339. Verse 17.

  340. But as the time

  341. of the promise

  342. drew near

  343. which God had granted

  344. to Abraham,

  345. the people increased

  346. and multiplied in Egypt.

  347. We read about that

  348. this morning

  349. to the children

  350. until there arose

  351. over Egypt

  352. another king

  353. who did not know Joseph,

  354. who didn't have

  355. favorable opinions

  356. of Joseph

  357. and his people.

  358. Stephen expresses

  359. his understanding

  360. in God's selection

  361. of Moses

  362. to redeem the people

  363. from their slavery.

  364. The first part of verse 20.

  365. At this time,

  366. Moses was born

  367. and he was beautiful

  368. in God's sight.

  369. Verse 35.

  370. This Moses

  371. whom they rejected

  372. saying,

  373. who made you a ruler

  374. and a judge?

  375. This man God sent

  376. as both ruler

  377. and redeemer

  378. by the hand of the angel

  379. who appeared to him

  380. in the bush.

  381. This man led them out

  382. performing wonders

  383. and signs in Egypt

  384. and at the Red Sea

  385. and in the wilderness

  386. for 40 years.

  387. This is the Moses

  388. who said to the Israelites,

  389. God,

  390. speaking of Christ,

  391. will raise up for you

  392. a prophet

  393. like me

  394. from your brothers.

  395. So Stephen is very aware

  396. of God's selection

  397. and use

  398. of Moses.

  399. Stephen

  400. emphasizes

  401. Israel's rejection

  402. of God.

  403. Beginning in verse

  404. 39.

  405. It speaks that

  406. the fathers refused

  407. to obey

  408. the commands of God

  409. given to Moses.

  410. They thrust Moses aside

  411. and their hearts

  412. they turned to Egypt.

  413. You recall that they

  414. made a golden calf.

  415. Moses has not been up

  416. on Mount Sinai

  417. for very long

  418. but they're very worried

  419. about what has happened

  420. to him.

  421. So they make a calf

  422. and they worship

  423. that calf.

  424. Verse 42 says,

  425. but God turned away

  426. and He gave them over

  427. to their worship,

  428. the host of heaven,

  429. as it is written

  430. in the book of Prophets.

  431. This is Amos 5,

  432. 25-27.

  433. Did you bring me

  434. slain beasts

  435. and sacrifices

  436. during the forty years

  437. in the wilderness,

  438. O house of Israel?

  439. You took up the tent

  440. of Moloch,

  441. a false god,

  442. and the star of your god,

  443. Raphon,

  444. a false god,

  445. the images that you made

  446. to worship

  447. and I will send you

  448. into exile

  449. beyond Babylon.

  450. And so you see

  451. that Stephen

  452. in his speaking

  453. of Israel's rejection

  454. of God

  455. as their rebellious activity

  456. that that continues on,

  457. right?

  458. All the way

  459. to the prediction

  460. of Amos

  461. that they would go

  462. into exile

  463. in Babylon.

  464. It happened

  465. in the forty years

  466. in the wilderness

  467. and it was still happening.

  468. He briefly speaks

  469. about Joshua

  470. and David

  471. and Solomon.

  472. A little rapid fire

  473. verses we get

  474. in verses 45

  475. and 50

  476. to speak about

  477. God's dwelling place.

  478. The tabernacle

  479. that God had instructed

  480. them to build,

  481. a place where

  482. His Shekinah glory

  483. could exist,

  484. later became

  485. a temple

  486. dreamed up by David,

  487. accomplished by

  488. Solomon.

  489. But then he's

  490. very quick to say,

  491. speak the words

  492. of the Lord

  493. from Isaiah 66,

  494. 1 and 2.

  495. God says,

  496. heaven is my throne

  497. and the earth

  498. is my footstool.

  499. What kind of house

  500. will you build for me,

  501. says the Lord,

  502. or what is the place

  503. of my rest?

  504. Did not my hand

  505. make all these things?

  506. And what he's saying

  507. is that I'm not limited

  508. to this temple,

  509. this place.

  510. You remember

  511. the accusation made,

  512. right?

  513. You were blaspheming

  514. against the temple

  515. itself.

  516. So he sweeps

  517. through the high points

  518. of their history,

  519. making these clear points.

  520. God has been in control.

  521. God has been moving.

  522. God has been establishing.

  523. God has been commanding.

  524. And Israel

  525. has been

  526. rebellious.

  527. So you have to read this.

  528. I'm coming at it,

  529. you know,

  530. from the beginning,

  531. but you have to read it

  532. from his conclusion.

  533. They become enraged

  534. with the things

  535. that he is saying to them.

  536. They're furious with them.

  537. And why?

  538. Because it concludes

  539. this historical sweep

  540. in verse 51

  541. through 53.

  542. He's been driving

  543. to this place

  544. as he's been speaking

  545. all along.

  546. You stiff-nicked people,

  547. uncircumcised

  548. in hearts and ears,

  549. you always resist

  550. the Holy Spirit.

  551. As your fathers did,

  552. so do you.

  553. Which of the prophets

  554. did your fathers

  555. not persecute?

  556. And they killed

  557. those who announced

  558. beforehand the coming

  559. of the righteous one.

  560. Think just recently

  561. of John the Baptist

  562. in our study of Mark.

  563. Whom you,

  564. the righteous one,

  565. have now betrayed

  566. and murdered.

  567. You who received the law

  568. as delivered by angels

  569. and did not keep it.

  570. So remember these accusations

  571. that are made against him.

  572. 611.

  573. Blasphemous words

  574. against Moses and God.

  575. Stephen's conclusion

  576. is to say

  577. it is not I

  578. who have offended God,

  579. but you.

  580. What a defense.

  581. The accusation

  582. you're making against me

  583. is not true,

  584. but it is true of you.

  585. It is not I

  586. who have spoken

  587. against Moses,

  588. but you

  589. and your disobedience

  590. and your failure

  591. to keep the law.

  592. It is you

  593. that has blasphemed

  594. the law

  595. and Moses.

  596. He calls them

  597. stiff-necked people,

  598. which is a reference

  599. to Exodus 33,

  600. 1-6.

  601. And I'd appreciate it

  602. if you'd turn there

  603. quickly with me.

  604. The second book

  605. of your Old Testament,

  606. Exodus 33.

  607. And I'm doing this for you.

  608. I want you to see

  609. the conclusion.

  610. I want you to really

  611. wrap your mind

  612. around the accusation

  613. that he's making

  614. against these religious

  615. elites.

  616. Exodus 33,

    Exodus 33:1–6

  617. verses 1-6.

  618. This is immediately

  619. following

  620. chapter 32,

  621. Israel

  622. worshiping

  623. the golden calf.

  624. This is what happens

  625. on the very heels

  626. of that event.

  627. The Lord says to Moses,

  628. verse 1,

  629. Depart,

  630. go up from here,

  631. you and the whole people

  632. whom you have brought

  633. up out of the land of Egypt,

  634. to the land of which

  635. I swore to Abraham,

  636. Isaac,

  637. and Jacob,

  638. saying,

  639. To your offspring

  640. I will give it.

  641. So go ahead,

  642. pick up.

  643. You're in the desert

  644. of Sinai,

  645. pick up and take off.

  646. Go to the place

  647. that I promised you.

  648. Verse 2,

  649. I will send an angel

  650. before you,

  651. and I will drive

  652. out the Canaanites,

  653. the Amorites,

  654. the Hittites,

  655. the Perizzites,

  656. the Hivites,

  657. and the Jebusites.

  658. Go up to a land

  659. flowing with milk and honey,

  660. but I will not go up

  661. among you,

  662. lest I consume you

  663. on the way,

  664. for you are a stiff-necked

  665. people.

  666. Now,

  667. what that means

  668. is that there are people

  669. who are not willing

  670. to bow

  671. to the will of God.

  672. So what he's saying to them is,

  673. you have been so disobedient.

  674. I have redeemed you.

  675. I have led you out.

  676. I have taken you from slavery

  677. and brought you

  678. to this place.

  679. I've called your servant Moses

  680. up onto the mountain.

  681. I have given him the law.

  682. And you have turned

  683. and you have worshipped

  684. a golden calf.

  685. I better stay behind

  686. because if you guys

  687. keep up with this

  688. and I'm with you,

  689. I'm going to consume you

  690. with fire, right?

  691. You will die.

  692. I cannot go with you.

  693. Verse 4,

  694. When the people

  695. heard this disastrous word,

  696. they mourned,

  697. and no one put on

  698. its ornaments,

  699. which means they didn't

  700. adorn themselves,

  701. they weren't joyful.

  702. For the Lord had said

  703. to Moses,

  704. Say to the people of Israel,

  705. You are a stiff-necked people.

  706. If for a single moment

  707. I should go up among you,

  708. I would consume you.

  709. So now take off

  710. your ornaments

  711. that I may know

  712. what to do with you.

  713. Therefore the people

  714. of Israel stripped

  715. themselves of their ornaments

  716. from Mount Horeb onward.

  717. It's significant

  718. that Stephen accuses

  719. these men

  720. of being stiff-necked people.

  721. He's saying,

  722. You are just like

  723. your forefathers

  724. who worshipped wrongly.

  725. They worshipped the golden calf

  726. in the desert of Sinai.

  727. He goes on to say

  728. that they're uncircumcised

  729. in hearts and ears.

  730. Their flesh had been

  731. circumcised as Jews,

  732. but they weren't clean

  733. before God.

  734. He's saying to them

  735. that you are as unclean

  736. as the Gentiles.

  737. You have no part

  738. in the things of God.

  739. He says that they

  740. always resisted

  741. the Holy Spirit.

  742. They've never been obedient

  743. just as their fathers.

  744. All of the messengers of God,

  745. the prophets of God,

  746. were persecuted

  747. by you and your fathers.

  748. Killed the ones

  749. that announced

  750. the righteous one.

  751. Now you have killed

  752. the righteous one.

  753. You received the law,

  754. but you have never

  755. kept the law.

  756. It's a massive accusation.

  757. A bold accusation.

  758. We spoke last week

  759. and the week before

  760. about Stephen's courage

  761. before these people.

  762. A spirit-filled courage

  763. to speak such words

  764. to them.

  765. Now,

  766. beginning in verse 54,

  767. we're going to see

  768. God's approval

  769. of Stephen's conclusion.

  770. So he comes to this conclusion.

  771. He gives this speech.

  772. History of Israel.

  773. He comes to this conclusion.

  774. You are wicked.

  775. Just as Israel has been wicked.

  776. You need Christ.

  777. But you killed Him.

  778. Now,

  779. when they heard these things,

  780. they were enraged.

  781. And they ground

  782. their teeth at Him.

  783. I don't know that I've ever

  784. been that mad.

  785. They ground their teeth

  786. at Him.

  787. But verse 55,

  788. but he,

  789. full of the Holy Spirit,

  790. gets a vision.

  791. He gazes into heaven

  792. and he sees the glory of God

  793. and Jesus standing

  794. at the right hand of God.

  795. And verse 56,

  796. he makes that known to them.

  797. So he sees it,

  798. verse 55,

  799. and verse 56,

  800. and he said,

  801. Behold,

  802. I see the heavens opened

  803. and the Son of Man

  804. standing at the right hand

  805. of God.

  806. Now,

  807. there are 17

  808. New Testament

  809. references

  810. to Jesus being

  811. at God's right hand.

  812. The right hand

  813. is the place

  814. of honor

  815. next to the King.

  816. It's the place

  817. of authority.

  818. Jesus is seen

  819. 17 times

  820. at the right hand

  821. of the Father.

  822. We should be familiar

  823. with this.

  824. Four of those

  825. 17 verses

  826. describe Him

  827. simply as

  828. at God's right hand.

  829. We don't know

  830. exactly

  831. the position

  832. of His session.

  833. That's the old word

  834. for this.

  835. His being

  836. at the right hand

  837. of the Father.

  838. His session.

  839. Four verses

  840. simply at God's

  841. right hand.

  842. 11

  843. describe Him

  844. as seated.

  845. And this is meant

  846. to show

  847. the completed work.

  848. He's not active.

  849. He's seated.

  850. He's currently

  851. sitting.

  852. You'll hear us say that

  853. here on Sunday mornings

  854. often.

  855. Jesus seated

  856. at the right hand

  857. of God.

  858. Interceding even now

  859. for us.

  860. 11 verses

  861. describe Him

  862. as seated.

  863. And then we have

  864. two.

  865. Right here together.

  866. Verse 55

  867. and verse 56

  868. describing Him

  869. as standing.

  870. But why?

  871. Now some have suggested

  872. that He is standing

  873. giving Stephen

  874. a standing ovation.

  875. That He's standing

  876. in approval

  877. over what is happening.

  878. Stephen's the first

  879. Christian martyr.

  880. Some have suggested

  881. that He's standing

  882. in order to

  883. welcome Stephen

  884. knowing that He's

  885. about to be

  886. martyr.

  887. And I think these

  888. are all fantastic thoughts.

  889. You may be familiar

  890. with them.

  891. You may have heard

  892. this.

  893. They're fantastic

  894. but they're not

  895. exegetically faithful

  896. to go,

  897. huh,

  898. standing?

  899. How interesting.

  900. I wonder why.

  901. Oh,

  902. well,

  903. Stephen,

  904. a man approved.

  905. Right?

  906. Full of the Holy Spirit.

  907. But if you look carefully

  908. at the very next verse

  909. after He says this,

  910. they are even more furious.

  911. You notice verse 57?

  912. They cry out

  913. with a loud voice

  914. and they stop their ears.

  915. Literally,

  916. they put their hands

  917. over their ears

  918. because they did not

  919. want to hear Him

  920. say anything else.

  921. Why is this

  922. so enraging to them?

  923. So think about that.

  924. Think about the accusation

  925. He's already made.

  926. Right?

  927. Verse 51 through 53.

  928. He's made this accusation.

  929. They're mad.

  930. He sees a vision.

  931. He shares the vision.

  932. They get even more mad.

  933. And then we know

  934. that He's martyred

  935. as a result.

  936. That's your context.

  937. Right?

  938. If we're going to be

  939. faithful,

  940. studying the Word,

  941. the context helps us.

  942. you may recall

  943. just up in verse 49,

  944. He quotes from Isaiah 66,

  945. 1 and 2.

  946. God says,

  947. Heaven is my throne

  948. and the earth

  949. is my footstool.

  950. Does that ring any

  951. little flags going off,

  952. bells going off,

  953. anybody's footstool?

  954. Footstool?

  955. Where else do we hear

  956. that type of thing?

  957. How about Psalm 110.

  958. 1?

  959. Not too much earlier.

  960. Not too much time earlier

  961. in the book of Acts.

  962. Peter's used this reference

  963. on the day of Pentecost.

  964. Chapter 2,

  965. verse 34 and 35.

  966. Psalm 110.

  967. 1.

  968. The Lord says to my Lord,

  969. God says to Christ,

  970. sit at my right hand

  971. until I make your enemies

  972. your footstool.

  973. There's some clue here.

  974. Okay.

  975. Alright.

  976. What's going on?

  977. Who are these listeners?

  978. What would have been

  979. their understanding

  980. of the Scripture?

  981. Would this have been

  982. significant to them

  983. that Jesus is standing

  984. at the right hand of God?

  985. They would have been familiar

  986. with Psalms like Psalm 68.

  987. 1.

  988. God shall arise.

  989. His enemies shall be scattered

  990. and those who hate Him

  991. shall flee before Him.

  992. God will stand up.

  993. And when God stands up,

  994. His enemies will scatter.

  995. God will stand up.

  996. And Isaiah 3.

  997. Verse 13.

  998. The Lord has taken His place

  999. to contend.

1000. He stands to judge the peoples.

1001. So the vision that Stephen sees here

1002. is a continuation of his indictment.

  1003. His in turn accusation

  1004. to these men

  1005. who are before him.

1006. These men who have now heard

  1007. the Gospel preached

  1008. in multiple ways

  1009. and at multiple times.

  1010. He's saying to them,

  1011. you wicked Israelites.

  1012. You who killed Christ

1013. and will not now believe

1014. in Him as your risen Savior

  1015. and Lord.

  1016. He will stand

  1017. and He will judge.

  1018. It's a much different picture

  1019. than a standing ovation,

  1020. isn't it?

  1021. It's being painted

  1022. of our Lord.

  1023. Prophet, priest, king

  1024. coming judge.

  1025. To judge Him.

1026. This is why they are so enraged.

1027. He's heaping up accusation on them.

1028. This is why they cry out

  1029. with a loud voice.

  1030. They stop their ears.

1031. Remember, these are the older men,

  1032. the esteemed men,

  1033. the well-dressed men,

  1034. the wealthy men.

1035. They fly into a rage

  1036. at this accusation.

  1037. This is God's approval.

  1038. Stephen's conclusion.

  1039. The council's reaction

  1040. to Stephen's conclusion.

  1041. Verse 57.

  1042. I've mentioned already.

1043. Cry out with a loud voice.

  1044. They stop their ears.

1045. They rush together at Him.

  1046. Luke simply records

  1047. verse 58.

  1048. Then they cast Him

  1049. out of the city

  1050. and stoned Him.

  1051. We get the introduction

  1052. of Paul,

  1053. now known as Saul,

1054. likely one of the witnesses.

  1055. It was tradition

  1056. that the witnesses

  1057. in a trial

  1058. would be the first

  1059. to throw stones.

  1060. They lay their garments

  1061. at the feet

  1062. of a young man

  1063. named Saul.

  1064. Saul.

  1065. And then we picture

1066. the way in which Stephen dies.

  1067. As they're stoning Stephen,

  1068. he calls out

  1069. in much the way

1070. that Christ did to God,

  1071. Lord Jesus,

  1072. receive my spirit.

1073. Looking to the greater joy

1074. that he was going to have

  1075. being with Christ forever

1076. and falling to his knees,

1077. he's cried out with a loud voice,

  1078. Lord,

  1079. do not hold

  1080. this sin

  1081. against them.

  1082. Repeating the words

  1083. of Christ

  1084. on the cross.

1085. And when he had said this,

  1086. he fell asleep

  1087. and thus we are

  1088. witnesses

  1089. to the first

  1090. Christian

  1091. martyrdom.

1092. And just as they had killed

  1093. the prophets before,

  1094. the ruling Jews

  1095. now

  1096. murder

  1097. Stephen.

1098. And it is a great

  1099. injustice.

  1100. And they kill Stephen

  1101. by the traditional way

  1102. that Jews would have

  1103. executed

  1104. a death

  1105. sentence.

1106. But they didn't do it

  1107. in the proper manner.

  1108. He's stoned,

  1109. it would seem,

  1110. that a great group

  1111. of men

  1112. standing around him

  1113. hurling rocks at him.

1114. The way that it was

  1115. meant to be done

  1116. is he was actually

  1117. meant to be thrown

  1118. off a cliff.

1119. And if that didn't kill him,

1120. a huge stone was supposed

  1121. to be thrown

  1122. from the cliff.

1123. And if that didn't kill him,

  1124. then smaller stones.

  1125. They're so angry.

  1126. They're not even going

1127. to wait to do it

  1128. properly.

  1129. They simply take him

  1130. outside of the city

1131. and begin to beat him

  1132. with rocks.

  1133. It's a major injustice

  1134. even by their standard

  1135. and certainly by ours

  1136. as we know him

1137. to be a follower of God,

  1138. a man

  1139. whose message

  1140. should have been

  1141. heeded

  1142. and listened to.

  1143. After this,

  1144. this great persecution

  1145. that arises,

1146. it goes forth from there.

1147. We're going to look at that

  1148. in some coming weeks.

  1149. The church is scattered.

  1150. God uses the death

  1151. of Stephen

  1152. in such a magnificent

  1153. way.

  1154. So what's the application

  1155. for us this morning?

1156. You fall into two categories

  1157. this morning.

  1158. You either have placed

  1159. believing faith

  1160. in Jesus Christ

  1161. or you have not.

  1162. And I'm always concerned

  1163. that in the place

  1164. that we live

  1165. and in the day

  1166. that we live

  1167. that there are many

1168. who think that they have

  1169. and haven't.

  1170. Beloved,

  1171. if you've placed

  1172. believing faith

  1173. in the personal work

  1174. of Jesus Christ,

  1175. you have been changed.

  1176. You are not different

  1177. in degree.

  1178. You are now different

  1179. in kind.

  1180. Enemy of God

  1181. now a friend.

  1182. Able to worship him.

  1183. Able to not sin.

  1184. Your life will be

  1185. progressing in holiness.

  1186. You will be able

  1187. to put off sin

  1188. and put on righteousness

  1189. by the empowering work

  1190. of the Spirit.

  1191. Your life will change.

1192. You need to ask yourself

  1193. this morning

  1194. which category

  1195. you fall into.

  1196. For those

  1197. who have not placed

  1198. believing faith

  1199. in Jesus Christ,

1200. I want you to hear

  1201. two points of application

  1202. from this text.

  1203. Number one,

  1204. encouragement.

  1205. God is long-suffering.

  1206. This major history

  1207. that's laid out

  1208. in these high points

  1209. by Stephen.

  1210. God is patient.

  1211. God is patient.

  1212. God is patient

  1213. with his people.

1214. Peter puts that this way

  1215. in 2 Peter 3.9,

1216. The Lord is not slow

  1217. to fulfill his promise

  1218. as some count slowness.

  1219. but is patient

  1220. towards you.

  1221. Not wishing that

  1222. any should perish

  1223. but that all

  1224. should reach repentance.

  1225. Be encouraged

  1226. that God is patient

  1227. with you.

  1228. Let this morning

  1229. be your time

  1230. of turning to him

1231. because of his great love,

  1232. his steadfastness

  1233. that he's shown you.

  1234. That that love

  1235. would compel you

1236. to love him in return

  1237. to believe in Christ

  1238. for the salvation

  1239. of your soul.

  1240. Second point of application

  1241. for those

  1242. who have not placed

  1243. believing faith in Christ

  1244. is a warning.

  1245. God will not

  1246. be patient

  1247. forever.

  1248. God will not

  1249. be patient

  1250. forever.

  1251. Christ will return

  1252. and he will

  1253. judge.

  1254. And I don't want

  1255. any of you

1256. to be in the category

  1257. of these men.

  1258. I don't want

  1259. any of you

  1260. to find yourself

  1261. at the

  1262. retribution

  1263. end of Christ's

  1264. judgment.

  1265. God will not

  1266. be patient

  1267. forever.

  1268. Notice here

  1269. that Stephen

  1270. filled with the Spirit

  1271. does not

  1272. offer repentance

  1273. to the council.

  1274. When he indicts them

  1275. he says

  1276. you are guilty

  1277. and Christ

  1278. will judge you

  1279. but he does not

  1280. offer them

  1281. repentance.

  1282. It had been

  1283. offered before.

  1284. I'm sure they had

  1285. heard the gospel

  1286. message in many ways

  1287. and at many times

  1288. specifically Peter

  1289. offers it to them

  1290. in Acts 4.12

  1291. He says

  1292. then there is

  1293. salvation in no one

  1294. else for there is

  1295. no other name

  1296. under heaven

  1297. given among men

  1298. by which

  1299. we must be

  1300. saved.

  1301. But it is not

  1302. offered

  1303. now.

  1304. You have not

  1305. placed believing

  1306. faith in Jesus

  1307. Christ.

  1308. Let today be the

  1309. day of your

  1310. salvation.

  1311. Believe that he

  1312. died on your

  1313. behalf.

  1314. That he is

  1315. raised at the

  1316. right hand of

  1317. the Father

  1318. seated for now

  1319. interceding for

  1320. you to stand

  1321. one day and

  1322. judge those who

  1323. don't believe

  1324. in him.

  1325. And for those

  1326. of you who

  1327. have placed

  1328. believing faith

  1329. in Christ

  1330. I remind you

  1331. of the general

  1332. lessons given

  1333. weeks ago

  1334. in two points

  1335. of application

  1336. salvation for

  1337. you.

  1338. Number one

  1339. a life given

  1340. in service to

  1341. God is a

  1342. life that is

  1343. not wasted.

  1344. We find our

  1345. great purpose

  1346. and our high

  1347. value in being

  1348. disciples of

  1349. Jesus Christ

  1350. and in giving

  1351. our lives the

  1352. way in which

  1353. he gave his

  1354. life.

  1355. Not specifically

  1356. necessarily to

  1357. die on a

  1358. cross but

  1359. emptying

  1360. ourselves for

  1361. the sake of

  1362. others for

  1363. the high purpose

  1364. of the glory

  1365. of God.

  1366. A life given

  1367. in service to

  1368. God is a

  1369. life that is

  1370. not wasted.

  1371. All the

  1372. activity of our

  1373. lives that's

  1374. not focused on

  1375. the kingdom is

  1376. wasted energy

  1377. and effort.

  1378. Turning to

  1379. dust.

  1380. The things that

  1381. we will build

  1382. that have

  1383. nothing to do

  1384. with the

  1385. kingdom will

  1386. one day

  1387. disappear.

  1388. Secondly,

  1389. the significance

  1390. of such a

  1391. life cannot be

  1392. measured by

  1393. its short-term

  1394. gains,

  1395. its breadth,

  1396. or its length.

  1397. So beloved,

  1398. I would just

  1399. encourage that

  1400. as you submit

  1401. yourself to the

  1402. will of the

  1403. Lord,

  1404. Lord.

  1405. Do not look

  1406. to others and

  1407. the significance

  1408. of what they're

  1409. doing,

  1410. the significance

  1411. of their

  1412. ministry,

  1413. the particular

  1414. positions that

  1415. they hold,

  1416. the acclaim

  1417. that they

  1418. receive.

  1419. There are many

  1420. followers of

  1421. Christ that are

  1422. getting their

  1423. glory now.

  1424. Put it off.

  1425. Invest in it

  1426. later.

  1427. Serve faithfully

  1428. Christ in all of

  1429. the spheres in

  1430. which you walk,

  1431. whether it be

  1432. here together

  1433. with us,

  1434. with the

  1435. church,

  1436. whether it

  1437. be at your

  1438. workplace as

  1439. you do the

  1440. daily grind for

  1441. the glory of

  1442. God.

  1443. and the

  1444. short-term

  1445. gain of

  1446. your boss.

  1447. Be with your

  1448. classmates,

  1449. your roommates,

  1450. your spouse.

  1451. Seek to lay

  1452. your life down

  1453. for the sake

  1454. of the kingdom.

  1455. Let's pray

  1456. together.

  1457. Let's pray.
