  1. I'm so thankful to be back, and I hope you've come this morning to hear the Word of God and to submit yourself to it.

  2. We've been worshiping through song and through music, but just a reminder that we really believe here that you also worship God by listening to His Word and by heeding to what it says and being encouraged by it and obedient to it.

  3. And I'm worshiping along with you. We are here for this and not for any other reason to make ourselves known or to make anything else known but Jesus known.

  4. And so just join me again just in a word of prayer.

  5. Father, we love you. We thank you for the chance to gather this morning.

  6. We thank you for the redemption that we have in Jesus, and I pray that you would fight off all distractions and things like what we might eat later or who we might hang out with later,

  7. what we might do after this is over, but you would allow us to be all here, Lord, and to hear your Word and that you would be lifted up.

  8. In Christ's name, amen.

  9. So we're returning to the book of Acts this morning.

  10. We find ourselves in chapter 8, so go ahead and turn in your Bibles to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  11. And in case you're new on the scene, and just sort of a reminder, I'm not going to give you a big overview of Acts,

  12. but just to remember that this is like the second book that Luke wrote.

  13. We have the Gospel of Luke, and then he wrote this as an account of the early history of the church and the Acts of the Apostles.

  14. And so Christ has resurrected.

  15. He has commissioned His disciples to go out and to make disciples.

  16. And then they literally watch Him ascend into heaven, and He empowers them to go out and to plant the church.

  17. The Holy Spirit comes.

  18. And so the apostles have been preaching the Gospel, making disciples in Jerusalem for the most part,

  19. in just the area of Jerusalem.

  20. So the Gospel hasn't quite gone out of the city yet in some ways,

  21. other than some others that have might have taken it out there.

  22. And two weeks ago, we looked at the martyrdom of Stephen, the first martyr of the church.

  23. Nathan preached on that.

  24. And just as a quick recap, he was arrested by the Jewish council for preaching the Gospel

  25. and for doing miracles in the name of Jesus.

  26. And so they bring him in front of this very intimidating council,

  27. and they ask him to basically give an account for what he's doing,

  28. whereon Stephen goes on to give this incredible explanation and exposition of the Old Testament.

  29. Like he walks literally through the Old Testament

  30. and says that the message that he wants them to see was all these Old Testament prophets

  31. and messengers from God, they were pointing to the Messiah,

  32. the Messiah that you just killed.

  33. And you're no different than the people who killed the prophets.

  34. You've ignored them, you've put them aside, and you're just as guilty.

  35. You've killed the Messiah.

  36. And then he offers them no repentance.

  37. It's just almost like an act of judgment.

  38. And then they're outraged.

  39. Obviously, they're very, very angry.

  40. And without even obeying the law of the day,

  41. they drag Stephen out and they stone him to death.

  42. And so, just interesting, the stoning that takes place,

  43. where we read it just in the previous chapter,

  44. that he was put to death.

  45. It's a very vivid word.

  46. It's a medical word that means like destruction.

  47. It reveals that like Stephen just wasn't killed quietly,

  48. it means that he was literally destroyed by these men.

  49. It wasn't an easy death, in other words.

  50. And very vivid word.

  51. It was horrific.

  52. It was utterly terrible as the stones fell on him

  53. and pretty much just mangled him to the ground.

  54. And he was the first martyr.

  55. And if you remember the very beginning of the book of Acts,

  56. when Jesus is commissioning his disciples,

  57. he says,

  58. You will be my witnesses.

  59. You will be my witnesses.

  60. And just as a reminder,

  61. the word witness that he uses is the word martyr,

  62. which means martyr.

  63. Like, you will be my martyrs,

  64. is what Jesus tells them.

  65. You will go out.

  66. You will die.

  67. You will be persecuted and executed and imprisoned for my namesake.

  68. So how would you like to get that commission?

  69. Many of us in our flesh would probably run from that.

  70. But they saw it as an honor to carry the name of Jesus.

  71. So Stephen became the first witness, really, in the church.

  72. And this execution, this martyrdom kind of sparks a large-scale persecution from the Jews in Jerusalem,

  73. from the leading Jews in Jerusalem.

  74. And it lasts for the next four chapters in the book of Acts.

  75. It's not necessarily from Rome.

  76. It's from the Jews.

  77. And so it just carries on.

  78. Stephen was the first.

  79. And so it goes on.

  80. And if we read,

  81. starting in our text today,

  82. in chapter 8,

  83. we're just going to go verses 1 through 25.

  84. So just follow along.

  85. This is just a story.

  86. So this is easy just to follow.

  87. And starting in verse 1 of chapter 8,

  88. it says,

  89. So just so you know,

  90. this word,

  91. devout men,

  92. it probably doesn't refer to other believers.

  93. It refers to probably,

  94. this is a term used for pious Jews,

  95. that probably spells that a lot of the Jews,

  96. some Jews there probably thought that the death and the execution of Stephen was wrong and unjust.

  97. And so they took Stephen's body away to bury it.

  98. In verse 3,

  99. But Saul was ravaging the church and entering house after house.

  100. He dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.

  101. Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word.

  102. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ.

  103. And the crowds with one accord pay attention to what was being said by Philip.

  104. And when they heard him,

  105. they saw the signs that he did.

  106. For unclean spirits crying out with a loud voice came out of many who had them.

  107. And many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.

  108. So there was much joy in that city.

  109. But there was a man named Simon who was previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria,

  110. saying that he himself was somebody great.

  111. They all paid attention to him for the least to the greatest,

  112. saying,

  113. This man is the power of God that is called great.

  114. And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic.

  115. But when they believed Philip,

  116. as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God in the name of Jesus Christ,

  117. they were baptized,

  118. they were baptized,

  119. both men and women.

  120. Even Simon himself believed.

  121. And after being baptized,

  122. he continued with Philip.

  123. And seeing signs and great miracles performed,

  124. he was amazed.

  125. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God,

  126. they sent Peter and John,

  127. who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

  128. For he had not yet fallen on any of them,

  129. but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  130. Then they laid their hands on them,

  131. and they received the Holy Spirit.

  132. Now when Simon saw the Spirit had been given throughout the laying on of hands of the apostles' hands,

  133. he offered them money,

  134. saying,

  135. Give me this power also,

  136. so that anyone whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.

  137. But Peter said to him,

  138. May your silver perish with you,

  139. because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money.

  140. You have neither part nor lot in this matter,

  141. for your heart is not in the right before God.

  142. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours,

  143. and pray that the Lord, if possible,

  144. the intent of your heart may be forgiven you.

  145. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness,

  146. and in the bond of iniquity.

  147. And Simon answered,

  148. Pray for me to the Lord,

  149. that none of what you have said may come upon me.

  150. Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord,

  151. they returned to Jerusalem,

  152. preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.

  153. And that's our text today.

  154. And so, hopefully,

  155. we will be able to pull some good things out of this,

  156. and to apply to our lives today.

  157. But this persecution that started,

  158. it eventually ended up spreading the gospel.

  159. And that's what we have to see here.

  160. So we're going to kind of take a bird's eye view,

  161. and see the big picture is that persecution started,

  162. and because of that, the gospel moved out beyond Jerusalem.

  163. And then, it zooms in closer to the life of Philip,

  164. who wasn't an apostle, but a deacon,

  165. one of the deacons chosen in the previous chapters and acts,

  166. like Stephen was.

  167. And he was the first one, actually,

  168. in the scripture to be called an evangelist.

  169. In chapter 21, he's called Philip an evangelist.

  170. So as the persecution arose in Jerusalem,

  171. the gospel was taken out.

  172. So, to the Samaritans,

  173. and then later on in this chapter,

  174. that Nathan will get to eventually,

  175. an Ethiopian.

  176. So one of the first African converts.

  177. So praise God.

  178. And so that's what we're working with.

  179. So there's four things that we're going to look at today

  180. in the text.

  181. But the first one, number one,

  182. is that God uses persecution

  183. to spread the gospel.

  184. And you see that in the first four verses

  185. of this chapter.

  186. So what do you think at this point?

  187. If persecution started

  188. and you were being arrested,

  189. beaten, thrown in prison

  190. for the sake of Christ,

  191. what would you do?

  192. Would you panic and say,

  193. oh man, our religious freedom

  194. has been taken away,

  195. so we better be quiet

  196. and not talk about Jesus anymore.

  197. We better lay low

  198. and hopefully not be recognized

  199. by the authorities.

  200. What would be your reaction?

  201. Well, that didn't silence him.

  202. This didn't stop it.

  203. It actually fueled it.

  204. And so we see that

  205. in the verses

  206. they were scattered

  207. and they went about preaching the word.

  208. So, really cool.

  209. I've always said this

  210. to a lot of the college students,

  211. but I think that so many of us

  212. feel we use the term

  213. of the generation

  214. that I don't really like,

  215. but the word awkward.

  216. It's like a most overkill word

  217. in our language today.

  218. So, just try to use that

  219. in a good way.

  220. But, a lot of us think

  221. that it's awkward

  222. to share the gospel

  223. because it's become a method

  224. or a gimmick

  225. and you've divorced it

  226. from your real life.

  227. It's not just something

  228. that flows out of your life.

  229. It's something that

  230. you pull apart

  231. and say,

  232. I've got to do this method

  233. or this gimmick.

  234. It's not a natural outflow

  235. of your language

  236. and your life.

  237. But this implies,

  238. the Greek here,

  239. is the idea

  240. that they went gossiping

  241. the good news.

  242. Just happening

  243. in the natural way

  244. that conversations unfold.

  245. So, a small little narrative.

  246. There's this man

  247. and he shows up

  248. in Galilee, for example.

  249. And, like,

  250. everyone knows everybody

  251. and he comes up and says,

  252. hey, why are you here?

  253. We don't recognize you.

  254. And he says,

  255. I've come from Jerusalem

  256. with my family.

  257. Did you hear about

  258. what happened in Jerusalem?

  259. I know there's a lot of stuff

  260. going on about Jesus of Nazareth

  261. and that he might be alive

  262. and all that.

  263. And then the man says,

  264. well, he actually is alive.

  265. He's been seen.

  266. And Stephen was killed,

  267. one of our brothers.

  268. And this has started

  269. a persecution.

  270. So, if it was up to me,

  271. I would have just stayed

  272. and died with Stephen.

  273. But I had to think about

  274. my wife and my children.

  275. And so we fled

  276. and now we're here.

  277. So, you're willing

  278. to die for this?

  279. You actually believe this?

  280. And yes, I am.

  281. And here's why I believe that.

  282. And so,

  283. this is just the natural way

  284. the conversation unfolds.

  285. They went about gossiping

  286. the good news of Christ

  287. in just natural ways.

  288. So,

  289. question for us.

  290. Why didn't Operation

  291. Search and Destroy

  292. Christians succeed?

  293. Plenty of other movements

  294. throughout history

  295. have gotten a lot of hype

  296. and a lot of startup,

  297. but then they died.

  298. Many, many,

  299. actually.

  300. And so,

  301. why not this?

  302. Why did this little group

  303. of followers

  304. from a dead carpenter

  305. from Galilee,

  306. why did it not die out?

  307. Because

  308. God,

  309. it's God's mission

  310. to take Christ

  311. to the ends

  312. of the earth.

  313. It's God's mission

  314. to take the gospel

  315. to all the nations.

  316. This isn't a mission

  317. of man.

  318. It's a mission

  319. of God.

  320. As it said,

  321. as the rabbi

  322. pointed out

  323. in Acts 5,

  324. as they were talking

  325. about what to do

  326. with all these Christians,

  327. he says,

  328. in the present age,

  329. I tell you,

  330. keep away from these men

  331. and let them alone.

  332. For if this is a plan

  333. or undertaking of man,

  334. it will fail.

  335. But if it is of God,

  336. you will not be able

  337. to overthrow them.

  338. You might even be found

  339. opposing God.

  340. This idea that

  341. if man started this,

  342. it will fail.

  343. But if God started it,

  344. you won't be able

  345. to stop it.

  346. And you might even

  347. be found opposing God.

  348. Robert Coleman

  349. wrote the classic book,

  350. Master Plan of Evangelism.

  351. Listen to what he wrote.

  352. He said,

  353. World evangelism

  354. is the divinely ordered

  355. goal for us all.

  356. Not only is it attainable,

  357. it is inevitable.

  358. Whether or not

  359. we believe it,

  360. one day the gospel

  361. of the kingdom

  362. will be heard

  363. to the ends

  364. of the earth.

  365. The God of the universe

  366. will not be defeated

  367. in his purpose.

  368. Any activity

  369. not in step

  370. with God's design

  371. for humanity

  372. is destined

  373. to futility.

  374. The sooner we realize this

  375. and align our way

  376. with his,

  377. the sooner

  378. we will be relevant

  379. to eternity.

  380. He's saying

  381. it is inevitable.

  382. God's mission

  383. will accomplish

  384. what it set out to do

  385. and it won't be stopped.

  386. So our suffering

  387. is inevitable

  388. to reach the world

  389. but our mission

  390. is unstoppable.

  391. I want to just,

  392. there's several examples

  393. today.

  394. In 1985,

  395. there was a Bulgarian

  396. pastor,

  397. Horacio Kosevic.

  398. He was arrested

  399. for preaching

  400. the gospel

  401. in his church.

  402. I understand Romania

  403. is under the control

  404. of communist Russia

  405. at the time

  406. and communism

  407. is seeking to put out

  408. the gospel flame.

  409. So he was in prison

  410. for just about a year

  411. and while he was there,

  412. he shared Christ

  413. with the other prisoners,

  414. he shared Christ

  415. with his interrogators

  416. and his torturers

  417. and many came to believe

  418. in Christ

  419. while he was in prison.

  420. And this is something

  421. that he said,

  422. both prisoners

  423. and jailers

  424. asked many questions

  425. and it turned out

  426. that we had more

  427. fruitful ministry

  428. there in prison

  429. than we ever could have had

  430. inside a church.

  431. God was better served

  432. by our presence

  433. in the prison

  434. than if we had been free.

  435. And that's just

  436. how God works.

  437. He works

  438. through persecution

  439. to accomplish

  440. his will

  441. and it's something

  442. that can't be stopped.

  443. So,

  444. the message here,

  445. okay,

  446. is not just

  447. that God

  448. often turns

  449. our setbacks

  450. into victories.

  451. The message

  452. for us

  453. also

  454. is that sometimes

  455. our freedom,

  456. our safety,

  457. our comfort,

  458. our prosperity

  459. can often

  460. cause tremendous

  461. sluggishness

  462. and apathy

  463. to the gospel mission.

  464. Obviously,

  465. I'm not ungrateful

  466. for the liberty

  467. and the freedom

  468. we have.

  469. Most of you

  470. know me,

  471. know I have

  472. a family

  473. that have shed

  474. blood for this country

  475. and many friends

  476. that are today,

  477. so I'm grateful

  478. to live where we live

  479. and to have

  480. the religious liberty

  481. we do.

  482. But at the same time,

  483. often,

  484. a lot of the stuff

  485. that we think,

  486. like prosperity,

  487. wealth,

  488. we think those things

  489. will kind of speed

  490. the gospel mission.

  491. And sometimes it does,

  492. but more than often

  493. it doesn't.

  494. It actually,

  495. the very thing we think

  496. will help it

  497. ends up creating

  498. lethargy

  499. and weakness

  500. and apathy

  501. and a preoccupation

  502. with our comfort

  503. and our ease

  504. rather than

  505. going and taking

  506. the gospel forward.

  507. So millions

  508. of our brothers

  509. and sisters

  510. around the world

  511. still suffer like this.

  512. Just open your eyes.

  513. Like,

  514. it's everywhere.

  515. North Korea,

  516. China,

  517. North Africa,

  518. Middle East,

  519. India,

  520. Pakistan.

  521. Just open your eyes.

  522. Like,

  523. these are places

  524. where even today

  525. they're being killed

  526. in prison,

  527. persecuted

  528. by their family,

  529. by their neighbors.

  530. And this isn't

  531. impersonal to me either.

  532. A lot of my,

  533. I have a few friends

  534. that are in some

  535. very hard places

  536. right now.

  537. My friend,

  538. also,

  539. who some of you

  540. have met,

  541. he's from Kyrgyzstan.

  542. He's,

  543. I won't tell you

  544. where he is right now,

  545. but I'll just tell you

  546. he's in Central Asia,

  547. so figure out

  548. where he is.

  549. But,

  550. he came here

  551. many years ago

  552. and he spoke to

  553. a large group

  554. of college students

  555. right here

  556. and he said,

  557. you know,

  558. here in America

  559. when you become

  560. a Christian,

  561. you walk an aisle,

  562. you pray a prayer,

  563. you take a seat

  564. and you just

  565. attend things.

  566. He said,

  567. it's very easy.

  568. He said,

  569. but in Asia,

  570. if you're going

  571. to become a Christian

  572. first,

  573. you're going to be

  574. kicked out

  575. of your family,

  576. you'll be ostracized

  577. by your family,

  578. your community

  579. will also turn you out

  580. and not take you in,

  581. and the government

  582. will either

  583. imprison you

  584. or kill you

  585. or not allow you

  586. to work.

  587. And he's like,

  588. when someone says

  589. that they believe

  590. in Jesus

  591. and they want

  592. to follow Jesus,

  593. if they go through

  594. all of that

  595. and they're still

  596. trusting in Jesus,

  597. we know that

  598. they're a real Christian.

  599. That's like what he said.

  600. And that was just

  601. convicting to me.

  602. Never sell the gospel

  603. cheaply to anyone

  604. because it's costing

  605. many people their lives

  606. as it did in this time

  607. like Stephen and others.

  608. So,

  609. for example,

  610. this is a quote

  611. by Charles Spurgeon

  612. and one that's like

  613. been in my head

  614. for years and years.

  615. But he said,

  616. for the Christian,

  617. prosperity is much harder

  618. to bear

  619. than adversity.

  620. Many a man

  621. will pass through

  622. trouble and trial

  623. and praise God

  624. under it,

  625. who,

  626. when he who is

  627. tried with no trouble,

  628. will forget his God,

  629. decline in grace,

  630. and grow almost

  631. a worldling.

  632. Believe me,

  633. there is no such trial,

  634. no greater trial

  635. than no trial.

  636. And so,

  637. prosperity,

  638. you know,

  639. we want to be thankful

  640. for it,

  641. but if we're not

  642. using it for the

  643. advancement of the gospel

  644. and not being

  645. graciously thankful for it

  646. and using it for God's cause

  647. and we make it an idol,

  648. we put it on the throne,

  649. God will deal with us.

  650. So,

  651. we possess so much

  652. in this country

  653. that has dulled

  654. our senses

  655. to the things of God.

  656. In this Disneyland,

  657. literally,

  658. of a country sometimes,

  659. Satan has Christians

  660. focused on

  661. what they can't take

  662. out of this world

  663. instead of Christ

  664. being enough

  665. and storing up

  666. treasures for eternity.

  667. So,

  668. though persecution

  669. can have harmful

  670. physical effects,

  671. it's just a well-known fact

  672. that prosperity

  673. tends to,

  674. throughout the history,

  675. slow down the mission

  676. of Christ

  677. instead of speeding it up.

  678. So,

  679. let's not be that way.

  680. So,

  681. the point

  682. is not that we should

  683. just seek out

  684. physical persecution,

  685. but the point

  686. is that we should

  687. just be very careful

  688. and wary

  689. of how we use

  690. the wealth

  691. that God has given us

  692. to not allow it

  693. to control us,

  694. but for us

  695. to control it

  696. for the glory of God.

  697. So,

  698. that's the first one.

  699. It's persecution

  700. spreads,

  701. right,

  702. and the gospel

  703. goes out.

  704. So,

  705. God uses persecution

  706. to spread the gospel,

  707. number one.

  708. Number two,

  709. the gospel

  710. can save

  711. persecutors.

  712. This is verse

  713. one and three.

  714. We see that

  715. Saul was there,

  716. and most all of us

  717. know who this is,

  718. and he was approving.

  719. He was like,

  720. yes,

  721. do this,

  722. kill this guy,

  723. silence him.

  724. And then later on,

  725. he was ravaging the church,

  726. entering house,

  727. dragging people off,

  728. committing them to prison.

  729. This is Saul of Tarsus.

  730. So,

  731. in the midst

  732. of this persecution,

  733. we get a brief glimpse

  734. of the man

  735. who would

  736. become the apostle Paul.

  737. Saul of Tarsus,

  738. one of the most

  739. religious elite

  740. of the day.

  741. He was educated

  742. under the best,

  743. and he knew it all,

  744. and he was a Pharisee,

  745. the most religious zeal,

  746. but he was wrong.

  747. Just because you're

  748. religiously zeal,

  749. it doesn't mean you're right.

  750. And it says here

  751. that he was ravaging

  752. the church.

  753. And this is an idea

  754. of havoc.

  755. It literally means

  756. to exercise brutal,

  757. sadistic cruelty,

  758. is what this means.

  759. It wasn't like he was like,

  760. come on,

  761. you Christians.

  762. He was literally

  763. brutalizing these people.

  764. It's also used

  765. in ancient Greek literature

  766. of a wild boar

  767. being on a rampage

  768. and ravaging a vineyard,

  769. and the idea of an animal

  770. savagely tearing

  771. somebody apart.

  772. That's what this language

  773. is used for.

  774. This is what Saul

  775. is doing.

  776. And the church.

  777. The same word is here.

  778. So he was a scary man.

  779. He could say that he

  780. literally tore the church apart.

  781. Not a man you'd want

  782. to encounter.

  783. Yet, we know

  784. that as Saul

  785. set out to annihilate

  786. the church,

  787. to annihilate the Savior

  788. that he hates,

  789. he ends up meeting Jesus

  790. on the Damascus road,

  791. and he's graciously saved

  792. by the very man

  793. he set out to destroy,

  794. right?

  795. And after these great

  796. acts of evil,

  797. as we've always seen,

  798. free and willful

  799. acts of evil,

  800. God uses to serve

  801. his purpose

  802. every time.

  803. And this is a great example.

  804. So Christ saved this man

  805. and made him

  806. to be the Apostle Paul.

  807. Made him a lover

  808. of men.

  809. A lover of Christ.

  810. One of the most

  811. radical conversions ever.

  812. So, just briefly,

  813. hold your hand here,

  814. but look at 1 Timothy

  815. real quick.

  816. This story is coming up soon,

  817. so I don't want to spend

  818. too much time on it,

  819. but in Acts 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  820. chapter 1.

  821. Before I read this,

  822. 1 Timothy, chapter 1,

    1 Timothy 1:12

  823. verse 12.

  824. Before I read this,

  825. I just want to ask you

  826. a question.

  827. Do you feel like,

  828. I know there's people

  829. here who do,

  830. because in a room

  831. this size,

  832. there is no way

  833. at all

  834. that Christ

  835. could save me

  836. and forgive me

  837. for the things

  838. I have done

  839. in my life.

  840. I have felt

  841. that way before.

  842. I would be ashamed

  843. even if people

  844. knew what I have done.

  845. And the fact that

  846. this person

  847. can just take away

  848. my sin,

  849. that's just an

  850. overwhelming thought.

  851. I just don't think

  852. it's possible.

  853. Well, this man

  854. we're reading about

  855. literally was going out

  856. and ripping Christians

  857. apart and hated Jesus.

  858. And yet,

  859. he found mercy

  860. in Christ.

  861. 1 Timothy 1, 12.

  862. Read this.

  863. This is Paul,

  864. the very man we read

  865. about writing this

  866. years later

  867. after he was converted.

  868. He says,

  869. I thank him

  870. who has given me strength,

  871. Christ Jesus,

  872. our Lord,

  873. because he judged me

  874. faithful,

  875. appointing me

  876. to his service.

  877. Though formerly,

  878. listen to this,

  879. I was a blasphemer

  880. and persecutor

  881. and an insolent

  882. opponent.

  883. But I received mercy

  884. because I acted

  885. ignorantly in unbelief.

  886. And the grace

  887. of our Lord

  888. overflowed for me

  889. with the faith

  890. and love

  891. that are in Christ Jesus.

  892. Here it is.

  893. The saying is trustworthy

  894. and deserving

  895. of full acceptance

  896. that Christ Jesus

  897. came into the world

  898. to save sinners

  899. of whom I

  900. am the foremost.

  901. But I received mercy

  902. for this reason

  903. that in me

  904. as the foremost,

  905. Jesus Christ

  906. might display

  907. his perfect patience

  908. as an example

  909. to those who believe

  910. in him

  911. to eternal life.

  912. You hear that?

  913. He's like,

  914. Jesus saved me

  915. so that in the future

  916. people like here today

  917. can look at Paul

  918. and be like,

  919. if God has the grace

  920. and power to save

  921. a man like that,

  922. I can also be saved.

  923. That's what this

  924. is saying.

  925. To the king of ages,

  926. immortal,

  927. invisible,

  928. the only God

  929. be honor and glory

  930. forever and ever.

  931. Amen.

  932. So listen,

  933. there's no matter

  934. what you've done,

  935. you're not beyond

  936. the tidal wave

  937. of God's grace

  938. to overtake you today.

  939. In Isaiah,

  940. it says,

  941. Behold,

  942. the Lord's hand

  943. is not shortened

  944. that he cannot save

  945. or his ear so dull

  946. that he cannot hear.

  947. God can do it.

  948. Alright?

  949. So throw yourself

  950. at Christ.

  951. Come to him.

  952. Alright?

  953. Number three,

  954. moving through

  955. number two,

  956. number three,

  957. the gospel can save

  958. outcasts.

  959. The gospel can save

  960. outcasts.

  961. And we see this

  962. when Philip takes

  963. the gospel

  964. to the Samaritans,

  965. even just down

  966. in verses five

  967. through eight.

  968. So,

  969. most of you

  970. Bible people

  971. out here,

  972. you know the Samaritans

  973. are,

  974. so I won't give you

  975. a long,

  976. boring history lesson

  977. on how they became

  978. Samaritans,

  979. but just so you know,

  980. they were like

  981. half-breed Jews

  982. because hundreds

  983. of years before

  984. when the Assyrians

  985. conquered this area,

  986. they put Gentiles

  987. there who began

  988. to intermarry

  989. and mix with

  990. the remaining

  991. Jewish population

  992. that was there.

  993. And so,

  994. Jews looked at them

  995. as half-breeds,

  996. unclean,

  997. we don't want to

  998. associate with them,

  999. we don't like them,

  1000. and so,

  1001. they had their own

  1002. little form,

  1003. I guess,

  1004. of like Judaism,

  1005. they had their own

  1006. temple,

  1007. that they worshipped

  1008. that,

  1009. but it wasn't

  1010. really the truth,

  1011. it was sort of

  1012. a mix of a lot

  1013. of different things,

  1014. it really wasn't

  1015. the worship

  1016. of the real God.

  1017. And so,

  1018. Jews who hated

  1019. them,

  1020. right,

  1021. Philip goes

  1022. and he brings

  1023. the gospel to them,

  1024. the Samaritans,

  1025. the outcasts

  1026. of their society,

  1027. really,

  1028. and he followed

  1029. the footsteps

  1030. of Jesus,

  1031. really,

  1032. because Jesus

  1033. was also the one

  1034. who brought the gospel

  1035. to these people

  1036. in himself.

  1037. and what happens,

  1038. you see there,

  1039. there was much joy

  1040. in that city

  1041. because of what

  1042. happened.

  1043. So,

  1044. that shows us

  1045. that no matter

  1046. who you are,

  1047. if you feel

  1048. ostracized,

  1049. if you feel

  1050. outcast,

  1051. Christ is also

  1052. there for you,

  1053. to bring you

  1054. into the people

  1055. of God.

  1056. And so,

  1057. a brief note

  1058. inside of this,

1059. because it's in our text,

1060. but it's not the main

  1061. focus,

  1062. what's going on here

  1063. when it says,

  1064. you know,

  1065. they believe

  1066. and they are baptized,

  1067. but they didn't receive

  1068. the Holy Spirit yet,

  1069. because that seems

  1070. to be inconsistent

  1071. with what we believe

  1072. about baptism.

  1073. We believe here

  1074. that like when

  1075. the Holy Spirit

  1076. comes and regenerates

  1077. you,

  1078. causes you to be

  1079. born again,

1080. when you hear the gospel

  1081. that he takes up

  1082. residence in you,

  1083. so,

  1084. which Nathan

  1085. will be speaking

  1086. about pretty soon

  1087. in the next part

  1088. of our chapter.

  1089. So,

  1090. why did this happen?

  1091. Well,

  1092. this seems to be

  1093. a very unique case

  1094. in the early church

  1095. where God,

  1096. in his wisdom,

  1097. chose to withhold

1098. the giving of the Spirit

  1099. until the apostles arrived,

1100. so that there could be

  1101. unity between the Jewish

  1102. church in Jerusalem

  1103. and the Samaritans.

  1104. And,

  1105. why though?

  1106. Like,

  1107. why is that important?

  1108. If this hadn't happened,

  1109. the Samaritans

  1110. might have continued

  1111. to think that they

  1112. were operating

  1113. spiritually apart from

  1114. the Jews in Jerusalem.

  1115. Or,

  1116. the believers in Jerusalem

  1117. might have not really

  1118. accepted them

  1119. as brothers and sisters

  1120. either.

  1121. So,

  1122. the Spirit had fallen

  1123. immediately when they

  1124. received Christ.

  1125. There had been no

  1126. connection between the two.

  1127. And so,

  1128. by the coming of

  1129. Peter and John

  1130. and the giving

  1131. of the Spirit,

  1132. the Jewish believers

  1133. are linked

  1134. with the Samaritan

  1135. believers.

  1136. believers.

  1137. So,

  1138. now there's not

  1139. two separate churches

  1140. but one church,

  1141. one covenant

  1142. member family

  1143. all together,

  1144. Jew and Gentile.

  1145. So,

  1146. that division

  1147. and that hatred

  1148. was healed

  1149. because of the gospel.

  1150. But,

  1151. it also established

  1152. the apostolic authority

  1153. of Peter and John

  1154. as the apostles.

  1155. They came

  1156. and they did this.

  1157. Jesus gave them

  1158. that authority

  1159. to do that.

  1160. So,

  1161. this healed

  1162. that division

  1163. that was there

  1164. so there wasn't

  1165. two separate things

  1166. going on.

  1167. So,

  1168. come talk to me

  1169. later more about that

1170. if you want to know more

  1171. but we'll stop there

  1172. just to keep moving

  1173. forward.

  1174. So,

  1175. last thing,

  1176. number four,

  1177. the gospel

  1178. can be misunderstood

  1179. as it goes forward.

  1180. So,

  1181. this is verse 9

  1182. through 11,

  1183. 18 through 24.

  1184. We get a picture

  1185. of this man

  1186. called Simon,

  1187. the magician

  1188. and he was called

  1189. the great one

  1190. and he was amazed

  1191. by the people

  1192. of Samaria.

  1193. He's just the word

  1194. sorcery here

  1195. which means

  1196. just magic

  1197. and it's just

  1198. sort of a religion

  1199. that came from

  1200. the Medo-Persian

  1201. empire,

  1202. sort of a combination

  1203. of astrology,

  1204. horoscope,

  1205. science mixed

  1206. with,

  1207. you know,

  1208. just superstition,

  1209. spells,

  1210. charms,

  1211. incantations.

  1212. Like,

  1213. if he had had

  1214. a 1-800 number

  1215. back then,

  1216. he would have

  1217. been the guy

  1218. to call.

  1219. So,

  1220. it seems like

  1221. he believed.

  1222. It says he believed.

  1223. Right?

  1224. Then later on,

  1225. Peter gives this

  1226. huge indictment

  1227. against him.

  1228. Peter responds

  1229. to him by saying,

  1230. like,

  1231. may your silver

  1232. perish with you.

  1233. It's almost

  1234. as if he's saying

  1235. to hell with you

  1236. and your silver

  1237. because you thought

  1238. you could obtain

  1239. the grace,

  1240. the gift of God

  1241. with money.

  1242. So,

  1243. Simon mistook

  1244. Jesus

1245. as a bill of goods,

  1246. a cheap commodity

  1247. that he could add

  1248. the tricks

  1249. to his repertoire

  1250. that he had

  1251. already.

  1252. You can't buy

  1253. the grace of God.

  1254. You have to come

  1255. and lay down

  1256. all your pride

  1257. and all the stuff

  1258. that you think

  1259. you can do

  1260. to impress God.

1261. You have to lay it down

  1262. and come to God

  1263. in God's way,

  1264. which is only

  1265. through Christ,

  1266. by grace,

  1267. through faith.

  1268. So,

  1269. he was only

  1270. obsessed

  1271. with the supernatural.

  1272. He thought this

1273. would be a cool way

  1274. for him to add

  1275. some tricks

  1276. to the show

  1277. he put on.

  1278. Peter says,

  1279. you have no,

  1280. you neither part

  1281. nor lot

  1282. in this matter

  1283. for your heart

  1284. is not right

  1285. before God.

  1286. You have no share

  1287. in this.

  1288. Your heart

  1289. is crooked.

  1290. So,

  1291. then he calls

  1292. him,

  1293. repent,

  1294. right?

  1295. Repent of this

  1296. wickedness.

  1297. Maybe,

  1298. perhaps,

  1299. God may forgive

  1300. you.

  1301. And so,

  1302. repent,

  1303. we are familiar

  1304. with this term,

  1305. to turn away

  1306. from your sin,

  1307. to change

  1308. the thinking

  1309. about why

  1310. you do what

  1311. you do.

  1312. It's not just

  1313. changing your

  1314. actions,

  1315. so follow me

  1316. on this.

  1317. It's not just

  1318. changing your

  1319. thinking,

  1320. it's just changing

  1321. your feelings

  1322. towards that

  1323. action as well.

  1324. So,

  1325. example,

  1326. it's not just

  1327. saying,

  1328. stop acting

  1329. prideful,

  1330. it's saying,

  1331. hate your pride,

  1332. because not only

  1333. does it destroy

  1334. you and hurt

  1335. others,

  1336. but it dishonors

  1337. God.

  1338. So,

  1339. it's not just,

  1340. okay,

  1341. I need to come

  1342. across like I'm

  1343. not prideful,

  1344. you need to

  1345. hate and despise

  1346. your pride,

  1347. because it

  1348. dishonors the

  1349. Lord and it

  1350. hurts other

  1351. people.

  1352. That's what

  1353. he's saying,

  1354. repent,

  1355. turn away

  1356. from your

  1357. sin,

  1358. you're rotten,

  1359. you're twisted,

  1360. you're enslaved,

  1361. that's what

  1362. Peter tells

  1363. him.

  1364. And so,

  1365. then he says,

  1366. well,

  1367. may none of

  1368. this happen

  1369. to me,

  1370. we don't

  1371. really know

  1372. what happened

  1373. to him,

  1374. but,

  1375. just an

  1376. example,

  1377. that there

  1378. is in the

  1379. scripture,

  1380. a believing

  1381. that is not

  1382. real believing,

  1383. a faith that

  1384. is not real

  1385. faith.

  1386. we see in

  1387. Luke 18,

  1388. or Luke 8,

  1389. that is sort

  1390. of a picture of

  1391. the parable of the

  1392. soils where the

  1393. gospel goes out,

  1394. and Jesus says,

  1395. the ones on the

  1396. rock are those

  1397. who when they

  1398. heard the word,

  1399. receive it with joy,

  1400. but then they have

  1401. no root,

  1402. they believe for a

  1403. little while,

  1404. and in time of

  1405. temptation,

  1406. they fall away.

  1407. So it seems like

  1408. something good is

  1409. going on,

  1410. but then when trials

  1411. come,

  1412. temptation come,

  1413. they fall away,

  1414. it's not real.

  1415. So is your

  1416. faith in Christ

  1417. real?

  1418. Are you sure

  1419. of it?

  1420. Are you trusting

  1421. Christ,

  1422. loving Christ?

  1423. So in conclusion,

  1424. here's just a few

  1425. things,

  1426. like there is a

  1427. very strong

  1428. warning,

  1429. scattered throughout

  1430. the Old Testament

  1431. and New Testament,

  1432. that there are a

  1433. lot of people who

  1434. think that they are

  1435. right with God,

  1436. and they're not.

  1437. There are people who

  1438. genuinely think they

  1439. have Christ,

  1440. and they don't.

  1441. Jesus said that on

  1442. the judgment day,

  1443. many people are

  1444. going to come to

  1445. him and say,

  1446. Lord, Lord,

  1447. we did this in

  1448. your name,

  1449. we did this for

  1450. you,

  1451. and he will say,

  1452. I will declare to

  1453. them,

  1454. depart from me,

  1455. you worker of

  1456. lawlessness,

  1457. I never knew you.

  1458. Very scary words.

1459. So how can you be

  1460. sure,

  1461. you can be sure,

  1462. that your faith is

  1463. real in Christ.

  1464. Luke's warning here

1465. is that there is a

  1466. faith that is not

  1467. saved.

  1468. Make sure you don't

  1469. have that faith,

  1470. that you have the

  1471. real faith.

  1472. Come to Jesus on

  1473. his terms,

  1474. not your terms,

  1475. for your heart is

  1476. not right before

  1477. God.

  1478. Right?

  1479. Make sure your

  1480. faith is real,

  1481. and stop playing

  1482. games with God.

  1483. Repent of your

  1484. sin,

  1485. change the way you

  1486. think about these

  1487. things,

  1488. and submit to God.

  1489. You can't buy this

  1490. with money,

  1491. you can't buy this

  1492. by good works.

  1493. It's the free

  1494. grace of God.

  1495. This is a free

  1496. offer of salvation

  1497. in Christ,

  1498. and the last thing

1499. we're going to look at,

  1500. just turn to Isaiah

  1501. 55 real quick.

  1502. If Simon had read

  1503. this, it might

  1504. have helped him,

  1505. but Isaiah 55,

  1506. the very opposite

  1507. of buying the

  1508. grace of God,

  1509. there's a picture

  1510. here.

  1511. A call to repent

  1512. of our sins,

  1513. renounce it,

  1514. and turn to God,

  1515. and to lay down

  1516. your sin,

  1517. and lay hold

  1518. of Christ.

  1519. Isaiah 55,

    Isaiah 55:1

  1520. verse 1,

  1521. this is an invitation

  1522. from God.

  1523. Come,

  1524. everyone who thirsts,

  1525. come to the waters,

1526. and he who has no

  1527. money,

  1528. come,

  1529. buy,

  1530. eat.

  1531. Come,

  1532. buy wine and milk

  1533. without money

  1534. and without price.

  1535. Why do you spend

  1536. your money for that

  1537. which is not bread,

1538. and your labor for that

  1539. which does not satisfy?

  1540. Listen diligently

  1541. to me,

1542. and eat what is good.

  1543. Delight yourselves

  1544. in rich food.

  1545. Incline your ear,

  1546. come to me.

  1547. Hear,

  1548. that your soul

  1549. may live.

1550. Jump down to verse 6.

  1551. Seek the Lord

1552. while he may be found.

  1553. Call upon him

  1554. while he is near.

  1555. Let the wicked

  1556. forsake his way,

  1557. and the unrighteous

  1558. man his thoughts.

  1559. Let him return

  1560. to the Lord.

  1561. Listen to this.

  1562. So that he may

  1563. have compassion on him,

  1564. and to our God,

  1565. for he will abundantly

  1566. part.

  1567. God is ready.

  1568. Come,

  1569. eat,

  1570. buy for free

  1571. from God.

  1572. Come to Christ.

1573. You're not coming to me.

1574. I have no supernatural power.

  1575. You're coming to Christ.

  1576. I'm only a messenger

  1577. to tell you

  1578. that God loves you,

  1579. Christ died for you,

1580. and that he will forgive you

  1581. and receive you now.

  1582. And so,

  1583. the last comfort

1584. that we can look at

  1585. from this

  1586. for those of us

  1587. who are in Christ

  1588. is that

  1589. our mission

  1590. to the world

  1591. is literally

  1592. unstoppable

  1593. because it is

  1594. God's purpose

  1595. to take the gospel

  1596. to all the nations.

  1597. And just a story

  1598. that I can't,

  1599. I really think

  1600. I'm just supposed

1601. to put it in here.

  1602. I was kind of

1603. holding it in my hand

  1604. lightly earlier.

  1605. But also,

  1606. during the communist regime,

  1607. there was a man

  1608. named Joseph Son,

  1609. another Romanian pastor.

  1610. I recommend this book.

  1611. It's called

  1612. Suffering,

  1613. Martyrdom,

  1614. and the rewards

  1615. in heaven.

  1616. But,

  1617. he was being interrogated.

  1618. He was in prison

  1619. for a long time.

  1620. And he was doing

  1621. the same thing,

  1622. loving,

  1623. speaking Christ

  1624. to the interrogators.

  1625. And this is something

1626. he wrote in the book.

  1627. He said,

  1628. during an early interrogation,

1629. I had told an officer

  1630. who was threatening

  1631. to kill me,

  1632. Sir,

  1633. let me explain

1634. how I see this issue.

  1635. Your supreme weapon

  1636. is killing.

  1637. My supreme weapon

  1638. is dying.

  1639. Here's how it works.

1640. You know that my sermons

  1641. are on tape

  1642. and they have spread

  1643. all over the country.

1644. And if you kill me,

  1645. those sermons

  1646. will be sprinkled

  1647. with my blood.

  1648. Everyone will know

1649. I died for my preaching.

  1650. And everyone who has

1651. a copy of that tape

  1652. will pick it up

  1653. and say,

1654. I better listen to this again

  1655. because this man

1656. sealed it with his very life.

  1657. So, Sir,

  1658. my sermons

  1659. will speak ten times

  1660. louder than before.

  1661. I will actually rejoice

  1662. in this supreme victory

  1663. if you kill me.

  1664. After I said this,

  1665. the interrogator

  1666. sent me home.

  1667. Another officer

  1668. who was interrogating

1669. a pastor friend of mine

  1670. told him,

1671. We know that Mr. Song

1672. would love to be a martyr,

1673. but we are not that foolish

1674. as to fulfill his wish.

  1675. I stopped to consider

  1676. the meaning

  1677. of that statement.

  1678. I remembered how

  1679. for many years

1680. I was afraid of dying.

  1681. I had kept a low profile

  1682. because I wanted

  1683. so badly to live

  1684. and I had wasted

  1685. my life

  1686. and inactivity.

  1687. But now

  1688. that I have placed

1689. my life on the altar

  1690. and decided

  1691. I was ready

  1692. to die

  1693. for the gospel,

  1694. they were telling me

  1695. that I,

1696. they would not kill me.

  1697. I could go wherever

1698. I wanted in the country

  1699. and preach

  1700. wherever I wanted

  1701. knowing I was safe.

1702. As long as I tried

  1703. to save my life,

  1704. I was losing it.

  1705. And now

  1706. I see dying

  1707. as gain.

  1708. You can't stop

  1709. a people

  1710. who believe that.

  1711. You let me live,

  1712. I'm going to preach

  1713. Christ everywhere.

  1714. Kill me?

  1715. That's what he says.

  1716. And the guy

  1717. obviously walked away

  1718. and set him free.

  1719. So,

  1720. this is God's mission

  1721. and that it's unstoppable

  1722. and we need to

  1723. throw ourselves into it.

  1724. We need to have

  1725. more confidence in this.

  1726. this is what

  1727. gives me courage

1728. to go on the campus

  1729. to hard places

  1730. and talk to people

  1731. who are either hostile

  1732. or crazy

  1733. because it's God's mission.

1734. What are they going to do?

  1735. Nothing.

  1736. They have nothing.

  1737. They speak wind, right?

1738. This is the word of God.

  1739. Throw yourself

1740. into the cause of God.

  1741. Let's pray together.

  1742. Let's pray together.
