  1. Alright, please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  2. ! After a week off with a commissioning service, it's good to be back into our verse-by-verse exposition of Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  3. Our text for this morning is verse 26 through verse 40.

  4. Before I read this on our behalf, let me remind you that this is God's Word,

  5. that it was written for His glory and our good,

  6. that we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  7. Now, as I read the text this morning, I'm going to stop and just make a couple of notes.

  8. For our benefit of understanding the text, I don't need to go back and do it at a later time.

  9. I am going to try to keep my comments brief.

  10. I think that's maybe a laughable statement on my part at this point.

  11. But I am going to try, at very least, because we do have some other matters to get to in our service today.

  12. But let me ask that we just quiet our hearts and our minds for a moment

  13. as we hear what God would say to us from His Word, beginning in verse 26.

  14. Now, an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  15. Rise and go toward the south, to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  16. This is a desert place.

  17. Now, this is the road that would have run from Jerusalem to Egypt.

  18. And there were two roads in this day that did so.

  19. One ran along the coast and the other through the desert.

  20. That's why Luke includes that insertion.

  21. This is a desert place.

  22. And that was to say that this was the least traveled path.

  23. An unlikely place to encounter another traveler.

  24. Verse 27.

  25. And he, being Philip, rose and went.

  26. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,

  27. who was in charge of all her treasure.

  28. Now, in this day, Ethiopia was a larger kingdom than the modern-day country of Ethiopia.

  29. And it expanded just south of Egypt.

  30. So you think the journey from Israel to Egypt, Ethiopia being just south of this.

  31. The queen that this Ethiopian eunuch is a servant of, they call here Candace.

  32. This is not a proper name, but more like a title, like Caesar or Pharaoh.

  33. And he held a very powerful position.

  34. He was like the secretary of the treasury.

  35. And he had come to Jerusalem to worship.

  36. Last part of verse 27.

  37. Verse 28.

  38. And was returning, seated in his chariot.

  39. And he was reading the prophet Isaiah.

  40. And the Spirit said to Philip,

  41. Go over and join this chariot.

  42. So Philip ran to him and heard him reading.

  43. It was customary in this day to read aloud.

  44. He was reading Isaiah the prophet and asked,

  45. Do you understand what you are reading?

  46. And I picture this caravan traveling down the road and Philip running up to it,

  47. hearing him as he's running to it,

  48. and calling out to him,

  49. Do you understand what you're reading?

  50. And the caravan comes to a screeching halt.

  51. Verse 31.

  52. And he said,

  53. How can I unless someone guides me?

  54. And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

  55. Now, the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this.

  56. Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,

  57. and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,

  58. so he opens not his mouth.

  59. In his humiliation, justice was denied him.

  60. Who can describe his generation?

  61. For his life is taken away from the earth.

  62. And this is from Isaiah 53, verse 7 and 8.

    Isaiah 53:7

  63. Verse 34.

  64. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  65. About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this?

  66. About himself or about someone else?

  67. Then Philip opened his mouth,

  68. and beginning with this scripture,

  69. he told him the good news about Jesus.

  70. And as they were going along the road,

  71. they came to some water.

  72. And the eunuch said,

  73. See, here is water.

  74. What prevents me from being baptized?

  75. And he commanded the chariot to stop,

  76. and they both went down into the water,

  77. Philip and the eunuch,

  78. and he baptized him.

  79. And when they came up out of the water,

  80. the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away,

  81. and the eunuch saw him no more,

  82. and went on his way rejoicing.

  83. But Philip found himself at Azotus,

  84. and as he passed through,

  85. he preached the gospel to all the towns

  86. until he came to Caesarea.

  87. Now, just as an interesting aside,

  88. there's some debate about whether

  89. Philip is Philip the Apostle,

  90. or Philip the Deacon,

  91. chosen amongst the men in chapter 6.

  92. I will argue that he is Philip the Deacon,

  93. because in Acts chapter 21,

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  94. Paul visits his house in Caesarea.

  95. And there he's called Philip the Evangelist,

  96. not Philip the Apostle.

  97. So either he travels from Azotus to Caesarea,

  98. where his home already was,

  99. preaching the gospel as he goes,

  100. or he arrives there and decides

  101. it's a good place to settle.

  102. And that's where he stays and establishes a home.

  103. He's married.

  104. He has four daughters,

  105. Acts 21 tells us.

  106. Now, as we look at this text this morning,

  107. the structure for our study

  108. will be as follows.

  109. Number one, and I'll repeat these for you.

  110. Number one, the means of God's saving grace.

  111. Number two, the recipient of God's saving grace.

  112. And number three, the signs of God's saving grace.

  113. Or if you prefer, the evidences of God's saving grace.

  114. This morning, we have the privilege

  115. of observing the ethnic diversity

  116. of God's saving grace.

  117. Now, we timed out doing baptisms

  118. to this text this morning.

  119. I could not have possibly timed out

  120. the preaching of this text

  121. for some of the things that are happening

  122. in our country today.

  123. We have to look at the ethnic diversity

  124. of God's saving grace.

  125. He reaches across all ethnic barriers.

  126. God has always had a gracious purpose

  127. for all mankind.

  128. All mankind having rejected God's righteous rule,

  129. all deserving of damnation,

  130. all deserving of His wrath.

  131. He has always had a gracious purpose.

  132. Beloved, we should rejoice in that this morning.

  133. As I look across the room,

  134. I don't know if there are many

  135. or any ethnic Jews here this morning.

  136. I think we're all from a latitude

  137. a little higher than where Israel is located.

  138. Most of us.

  139. We're all beneficiaries of God

  140. having a gracious purpose for all mankind.

  141. For extending His mercy

  142. beyond the borders of ethnic Israel.

  143. He has never intended to only have a saving relationship

  144. with ethnic Israel.

  145. The presentation of this reality begins

  146. with the Abrahamic covenant

  147. in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:1–3

  148. verses 1 through 3.

  149. The promise I've been talking about

  150. with the children in the Big Picture Story Bible,

  151. the promise that's going to be fulfilled in Christ,

  152. starts with that promise

  153. that God makes to Abraham

  154. who becomes Abraham.

  155. He says in Genesis 12, verse 1,

    Genesis 12:1

  156. The Lord said to Abraham,

  157. Go from your country and your kindred

  158. and your father's house

  159. to the land I will show you.

  160. And I will make of you a great nation.

  161. And I will bless you and make your name great

  162. so that you will be a blessing.

  163. I will bless those who bless you

  164. and him who dishonors you I will curse.

  165. And in you,

  166. all the families of the earth

  167. shall be blessed.

  168. We're the wonderful recipients

  169. of that promise

  170. made to Abraham on that day.

  171. And how did God intend to bless

  172. all the families of the earth

  173. in Abraham?

  174. With the saving grace,

  175. grace that comes through a descendant of Abraham,

  176. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  177. Now let me remind you

  178. or catch you up

  179. if you haven't been with us,

  180. a bit of a summary of Acts to this point.

  181. If you want to flip,

  182. you can look at chapter 1.

  183. Jesus ascends.

  184. This is after he spent 40 days

  185. with the apostles.

  186. He ascends and he leaves a command

  187. for them to stay in Jerusalem

  188. and wait for the Spirit.

  189. Stay until the Spirit of God comes.

  190. Chapter 2, this happens.

  191. Ten days later,

  192. on the day of Pentecost,

  193. they receive the Spirit.

  194. They preach in various known languages.

  195. And as the people are amazed by it

  196. and confused by it,

  197. they say,

  198. what does this mean?

  199. And in the rest of chapter 2,

  200. Peter preaches.

  201. Many are saved.

  202. Thousands come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  203. And we get a bit of a taste

  204. of the fellowship of the church

  205. at the end of chapter 2.

  206. The way in which they loved each other

  207. and the way in which they had favor

  208. with the people in Jerusalem.

  209. In chapter 3,

  210. God orchestrates yet another stage

  211. for Peter to preach the Gospel on

  212. through the healing of a lame beggar.

  213. Peter and John going up to the temple

  214. just to pray,

  215. heal a lame beggar,

  216. and a crowd gathers.

  217. And once again,

  218. the Gospel is preached.

  219. Many respond in faith.

  220. But as a result of this,

  221. chapters 4 and 5,

  222. Peter and John are arrested

  223. and persecution begins in Jerusalem

  224. of the Christian faith.

  225. They're charged not to speak anymore

  226. in the name of Christ.

  227. Chapter 5, we see the arrest of the apostles.

  228. This time they're now beaten,

  229. charged again,

  230. and released.

  231. Chapter 6,

  232. the unity of the church

  233. is not functioning so well any longer.

  234. And there's some complaints arising.

  235. And so some deacons are selected

  236. to help serve food.

  237. And one of those deacons,

  238. a man named Stephen,

  239. is boldly proclaiming the Gospel.

  240. And he's debating in the synagogues.

  241. And he is arrested.

  242. He has a very brief trial

  243. in which he gives a rather rousing speech.

  244. I encourage you to read in chapter 7

  245. if you're not familiar with this.

  246. And then he's martyred.

  247. He's taken outside the city

  248. and he's stoned to death.

  249. And this is Stephen's speech.

  250. Stephen's martyrdom

  251. becomes this moment

  252. where the Gospel goes

  253. out of the walls of Jerusalem

  254. and to the nations.

  255. It begins at this point

  256. in the church's history.

  257. The persecution ramps up

  258. in chapter 8.

  259. And as a result,

  260. the church there in Jerusalem

  261. is scattered.

  262. And the Gospel goes forth.

  263. I've said to you that Stephen's martyrdom

  264. is the hinge that the gates swing on.

  265. And now the Gospel has expanded outward.

  266. Acts 1.8.

  267. Jesus says this to the disciples.

  268. You will receive power

  269. when the Holy Spirit has come upon you

  270. and you will be my witnesses

  271. in Jerusalem

  272. and in all Judea

  273. and Samaria

  274. and to the end of the earth.

  275. You will find it interesting

  276. that to this time

  277. and in this world,

  278. to the Romans,

  279. Ethiopia was the end of the earth.

  280. They had not yet traveled

  281. beyond that place.

  282. And I'm not suggesting

  283. that the Ethiopian eunuch

  284. coming to faith in Christ

  285. is the fulfillment of Acts 1.8.

  286. But in their thinking,

  287. boy, has the Gospel gone out.

  288. So let's look first

  289. at the means of God's saving grace.

  290. How is it that God works

  291. His purpose in the world?

  292. How is it that God brings about

  293. the salvation of His people?

  294. Now hear me,

  295. this is a work of God.

  296. It's wholly a work of God.

  297. But He uses means.

  298. And we can see all of those means

  299. at play in this text.

  300. So the first mean

  301. that God uses

  302. is that third part of the Trinity

  303. we call the Holy Spirit.

  304. The Spirit.

  305. We can see God's divine orchestration

  306. in saving the Ethiopian eunuch.

  307. What a divine encounter this is

  308. that Philip has.

  309. And it's given to him

  310. by instruction.

  311. An angel of the Lord

  312. says to Philip,

  313. rise and go toward the south

  314. to the road that goes down

  315. from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  316. Beloved, if you were given

  317. this command,

  318. you would say,

  319. why in the world

  320. would I go do such a thing?

  321. There's no reason for me

  322. to go to this place.

  323. It's a desert place.

  324. No one will be there.

  325. Verse 29,

  326. the Spirit says to Philip

  327. as the Ethiopian eunuch

  328. is going by,

  329. go over and join this chariot.

  330. We even see the spirits

  331. working in the eunuch's baptism.

  332. Going along.

  333. Presumably being discipled by Philip.

  334. Having responded in faith to Christ.

  335. He's now teaching him

  336. how it is that he should be obedient

  337. to that faith.

  338. Now that you've believed in Christ,

  339. you should be baptized.

  340. And just then they roll past

  341. a body of water.

  342. The eunuch says,

  343. what's stopping me

  344. from being baptized

  345. even now?

  346. And once he's baptized,

  347. the Spirit,

  348. this is verse 39,

  349. the Spirit of the Lord

  350. carries Philip away.

  351. We don't know exactly

  352. what that means,

  353. but it would seem

  354. that he snatched him.

  355. He's gone.

  356. And he reappears

  357. in another place.

  358. So the Spirit of God

  359. is used by God

  360. as part of the Trinity

  361. to bring about

  362. the salvation

  363. of his people.

  364. Beloved,

  365. all of us

  366. who have responded

  367. in faith to Christ

  368. have experienced

  369. this same miracle.

  370. Maybe not in the same way.

  371. I've never traveled

  372. a desert road

  373. in a chariot

  374. and had a man

  375. meet me,

  376. baptize me,

  377. and then disappear.

  378. But all the same,

  379. it's just as miraculous.

  380. We should rejoice

  381. in the great way

  382. that God orchestrated

  383. our salvation.

  384. The second meaning

  385. of God's saving grace

  386. is a servant.

  387. With the Spirit,

  388. we have a servant.

  389. God employs

  390. the obedience

  391. of his servants

  392. in the salvation

  393. of his people.

  394. God employs

  395. the obedience

  396. of his servants

  397. in the salvation

  398. of his people.

  399. If you have been

  400. around CFC much,

  401. you have heard me say

  402. that God does not

  403. need you.

  404. Don't belittle God

  405. by thinking

  406. that you're so important

  407. that he needs you

  408. to bring about

  409. the salvation

  410. of his people.

  411. But because he loves you,

  412. he uses you

  413. in that process.

  414. He wants you

  415. to experience

  416. his goodness

  417. in his saving work.

  418. And so he uses you

  419. to accomplish

  420. that very thing.

  421. So he uses a servant.

  422. In this case,

  423. it's Philip.

  424. And Philip is obedient.

  425. Verse 27 says,

  426. And he rose

  427. and went.

  428. Luke doesn't record

  429. any hesitation

  430. on his part.

  431. He's commanded to go.

  432. And he goes.

  433. In verse 30,

  434. I love,

  435. as he's told to go

  436. join the chariot,

  437. Philip runs to him.

  438. That's where I get

  439. this picture in my mind

  440. that he had to catch up

  441. to what was happening.

  442. But Philip runs to him.

  443. Here's what's happening.

  444. He's reading from the Scripture

  445. and he engages him immediately.

  446. Do you understand

  447. what you are reading?

  448. Philip likely is a very humble man,

  449. not a man of great education,

  450. not a man of great training.

  451. And here's this man,

  452. the secretary of the treasurer

  453. for Ethiopia.

  454. Picture that he's likely

  455. in a large caravan

  456. with soldiers protecting him.

  457. He's traveled a great distance.

  458. And Philip,

  459. emboldened by the Spirit,

  460. runs up and yells out,

  461. Do you understand

  462. what you are reading?

  463. And then he's used by God

  464. to explain the Scripture to him

  465. to present the good news

  466. of Jesus Christ.

  467. Beloved,

  468. in the same way

  469. we're to be used by God,

  470. we're to be obedient.

  471. Let me point out to you

  472. that Philip begins

  473. by asking a simple,

  474. pointed question.

  475. He just asks a question.

  476. Let me say,

  477. for those of you

  478. who have such a discomfort

  479. in sharing the Gospel,

  480. I wish that wasn't true.

  481. I wish that it worked

  482. in your heart

  483. in such a way

  484. that it had to bubble out.

  485. You had to speak about it.

  486. You just were looking

  487. for every possible opportunity

  488. to share the good news

  489. of Jesus Christ.

  490. But I know that sometimes

  491. it's uncomfortable.

  492. I know that sometimes

  493. we have to push in

  494. to those conversations.

  495. Let me just encourage you

  496. to ask pointed questions.

  497. Ask people what they believe

  498. and press at them

  499. to defend what they believe.

  500. A week ago today,

  501. Sunday afternoon,

  502. we did an Independence Day thing

  503. with Sam's family

  504. and she has a cousin

  505. and her husband

  506. that are spiritual.

  507. They often seem confused

  508. about what they believe.

  509. And I got into a question

  510. with her cousin Bonnie

  511. and she used the term

  512. I'm Catholic.

  513. Catholic-ish

  514. is what she was saying.

  515. I'm Catholic.

  516. And I just said,

  517. that is a fascinating term.

  518. I want to know

  519. what you mean by that.

  520. And so she told me

  521. and she launched into it

  522. and I just continued

  523. to ask her questions.

  524. I just kept saying,

  525. but do you believe?

  526. But what about?

  527. And I quoted the scripture to her

  528. and I just continued.

  529. And praise the Lord

  530. at the end of that.

  531. I do actually think

  532. that she's in the faith.

  533. I think she properly believes

  534. that her justification

  535. is found in Christ alone.

  536. But in the midst of that,

  537. her husband sat with us

  538. and he listened to everything

  539. that we had to say.

  540. At the end of this,

  541. he thanked me

  542. for the conversation that we had.

  543. I've got all kinds of plans

  544. for things to give them

  545. and literature

  546. to pile up on them.

  547. But it was just simple,

  548. pointed questions.

  549. Just ask questions.

  550. You see Philip do that here.

  551. And then in verse 40,

  552. after he's snatched away

  553. from this place,

  554. he finds himself in Azotus,

  555. he continues to preach the gospel.

  556. He goes to all the towns

  557. the way Luke records it,

  558. which I love that phrasing

  559. until he came to Caesarea.

  560. So we have the Spirit,

  561. we have a servant,

  562. and we have the Scripture.

  563. And we have the Scripture.

  564. And recall that the eunuch

  565. is returning from Jerusalem.

  566. He's traveled this great distance

  567. to Jerusalem to worship the Lord.

  568. He's returning.

  569. He's reading the prophet Isaiah.

  570. He's reading it out loud,

  571. which was customary to do so.

  572. And he reads from Isaiah 53.

  573. It's verse 7 and 8.

  574. Like a sheep who was led to the slaughter,

  575. and like a lamb before its shears,

  576. is silent,

  577. so he opens not his mouth.

  578. In his humiliation,

  579. justice was denied him.

  580. Who can describe his generation?

  581. For his life is taken away

  582. from the earth.

  583. And what does Philip do?

  584. Verse 35.

  585. He opens his mouth.

  586. He doesn't launch into

  587. a philosophical debate with him.

  588. He begins with this Scripture,

  589. and he tells him the good news

  590. about Jesus.

  591. Beloved,

  592. our preaching of the Gospel,

  593. the means that God uses,

  594. right,

  595. is the good news of Jesus Christ

  596. found in the Scripture.

  597. That doesn't mean you have to quote it exactly,

  598. although I would encourage you to do so.

  599. But you need to speak the Bible to people,

  600. the Word of God to people.

  601. Ephesians 6.17,

  602. Paul encourages us to take up

  603. the sword of the Spirit,

  604. which is the Word of God.

  605. This is the tool

  606. that the Spirit of God wields

  607. to bring people to faith

  608. in Jesus Christ.

  609. The way in which God displays

  610. His gracious,

  611. saving work

  612. is using the Scripture.

  613. Recall, beloved,

  614. when Paul says in Romans 1.16,

  615. for I am not ashamed of the Gospel.

  616. Why?

  617. For the same reason,

  618. we should not be ashamed of the Gospel.

  619. Speak the truth of God

  620. to God's people from the Scripture,

  621. for it is the power of God

  622. for salvation

  623. to everyone who believes.

  624. The Jew first,

  625. and also the Greek,

  626. and the Ethiopian,

  627. and those of us

  628. from high latitudes

  629. of this planet.

  630. It's the Gospel message

  631. that God uses to save people.

  632. So we see these means of God

  633. saving grace.

  634. The Spirit,

  635. a servant,

  636. and the Scripture.

  637. Secondly,

  638. let's take a closer look

  639. at the recipient

  640. of God's saving grace.

  641. Let's take a closer look

  642. at the eunuch.

  643. There's some distinguishing things

  644. about him.

  645. First,

  646. that he's African.

  647. A wonderful thing.

  648. The first,

  649. to our knowledge,

  650. the first African convert.

  651. I would love to know,

  652. and there may be some sources

  653. out there

  654. that I have not had time

  655. to look at,

  656. but what happened

  657. as a result

  658. of this man

  659. taking the Gospel

  660. back to Ethiopia.

  661. The Gospel shatters

  662. all divides,

  663. real or imagined.

  664. It tears down

  665. dividing walls

  666. of ethnicity,

  667. culture,

  668. gender,

  669. and skin color.

  670. Praise God for that.

  671. He was an African.

  672. He was a seeker.

  673. Right?

  674. Remember,

  675. first,

  676. he's reading the Scripture.

  677. He's got a copy

  678. of the Scripture.

  679. He's obtained.

  680. He's reading the Scripture.

  681. Secondly,

  682. he's traveled

  683. this great distance.

  684. It's more than

  685. a thousand miles

  686. that he's journeyed.

  687. It'd be a week plus

  688. at least

  689. for this man

  690. to have traveled

  691. to Jerusalem

  692. for the worship of God.

  693. He's seeking God.

  694. Third,

  695. he's a eunuch.

  696. Do we all know

  697. what a eunuch is?

  698. I really don't want

  699. to tell you

  700. what a eunuch is.

  701. I'm going to tell you.

  702. A eunuch is a man

  703. whose male genitalia

  704. are removed

  705. either due to an accident,

  706. something happens

  707. and needs to be removed,

  708. or intentionally

  709. in order to serve

  710. in the role

  711. of a eunuch.

  712. This was most often done

  713. so that these men

  714. could serve

  715. in close relation

  716. to a queen

  717. because he was no threat

  718. to the throne.

  719. He wasn't going to

  720. bed the queen.

  721. So here we see

  722. this eunuch

  723. serves the queen

  724. in that very way

  725. that we see

  726. is called Candace.

  727. So it's an interesting thing

  728. about this man

  729. that's given to us.

  730. On first reading,

  731. it seems more significant

  732. to me that he's Ethiopian.

  733. That detail sticks out to me

  734. and jumps out at me,

  735. but Luke really goes after

  736. the fact that he's a eunuch.

  737. I mean,

  738. I feel like I could have done

  739. without the detail altogether,

  740. that it's not really

  741. that important to me.

  742. So why does Luke

  743. repeatedly simply

  744. call him a eunuch?

  745. He could have called him

  746. the Ethiopian

  747. or Candace's treasurer

  748. or many other

  749. defining factors

  750. about this man.

  751. But he simply

  752. calls him

  753. the eunuch.

  754. Notice verse 27,

  755. verse 34,

  756. verse 36,

  757. verse 38,

  758. and verse 39.

  759. He repeats that phrase.

  760. But I would encourage you

  761. when you're studying

  762. the Bible,

  763. which I hope you do

  764. on your own,

  765. and you see things

  766. like that,

  767. to pause and question it.

  768. Why?

  769. Why does Luke

  770. use that title

  771. for this man

  772. and use it so many times?

  773. He wants the reader

  774. to notice this man

  775. is a eunuch.

  776. We've got it, right?

  777. We've seen it.

  778. He's a eunuch.

  779. This man from Ethiopia

  780. serving this high position,

  781. he's a seeker,

  782. he's traveled all the way

  783. to Jerusalem,

  784. he's a student

  785. of the Bible,

  786. and he would have known

  787. and he would have experienced

  788. being in Jerusalem.

  789. He would have been denied

  790. access to temple worship.

  791. Deuteronomy 23,

  792. 1.

  793. You ready for some

  794. more uncomfortable language?

  795. No one whose testicles

  796. are crushed

  797. or whose male organ

  798. is cut off

  799. shall enter the assembly

  800. of the Lord.

  801. Not only is he not

  802. ethnically Jewish,

  803. he's an Ethiopian,

  804. but he's an outcast

  805. from temple worship

  806. by God's own design.

  807. Deuteronomy 23, 1.

  808. So Luke's telling us

  809. he's a eunuch,

  810. he's a eunuch,

  811. he's a eunuch, right?

  812. And if we're familiar

  813. with this reality,

  814. Deuteronomy 23, 1,

  815. it's significant

  816. that he's reading

  817. in the book of Isaiah.

  818. In fact,

  819. he might have been reading

  820. in the book of Isaiah,

  821. right?

  822. He quotes from Isaiah 53,

  823. it's this last

  824. of four songs

  825. of the suffering servant.

  826. Those of us who are in Christ

  827. are very aware

  828. of who these are talking about.

  829. He's not.

  830. Is he talking about,

  831. is the prophet

  832. talking about himself?

  833. Prophets were hated.

  834. Is he talking about himself

  835. or is he talking about

  836. someone else?

  837. And so,

  838. he was likely familiar

  839. just a couple of chapters later

  840. and I want you to turn there

  841. with me to Isaiah 56.

  842. So try to place yourself

  843. in his shoes,

  844. at least in his feelings.

  845. He's not ethically Jewish.

  846. He's an Ethiopian.

  847. He's a eunuch.

  848. He's been forbidden

  849. from temple worship.

  850. And he picks up

  851. a copy of Isaiah

  852. and he reads

  853. chapter 56,

  854. beginning in verse 3.

  855. Let not the foreigner

  856. who has joined himself

  857. to the Lord say,

  858. The Lord will surely

  859. separate me

  860. from His people.

  861. And let not the eunuch say,

  862. Behold,

  863. I am a dry tree.

  864. For thus says the Lord,

  865. To the eunuchs

  866. who keep my Sabbaths,

  867. who choose the things

  868. that please me

  869. and hold fast my covenant,

  870. I will give in my house

  871. and within my walls

  872. a monument and a name

  873. better than sons

  874. and daughters.

  875. I will give them

  876. an everlasting name

  877. that shall not

  878. be cut off.

  879. And so he finds

  880. in Isaiah 56

  881. this beautiful promise

  882. and as he backs up

  883. and he's reading

  884. Isaiah 53

  885. and trying to understand

  886. how these things

  887. come to pass,

  888. he reads a song

  889. of the suffering servant.

  890. And so we ask the question,

  891. Who is the suffering servant?

  892. Is it the prophet

  893. or is it someone else?

  894. And Philip says to him,

  895. It is Jesus,

  896. the Christ.

  897. Isn't that incredible?

  898. Wonderful to know

  899. the broader context

  900. of the Scripture itself.

  901. This recipient of God's

  902. saving grace.

  903. And for those of us

  904. who are in Christ,

  905. we just should be astounded

  906. by this.

  907. We should just have

  908. our hearts warmed

  909. by the great deal of love

  910. that God pours out

  911. for people of all kinds.

  912. The outcasts.

  913. He brings them in.

  914. Many of us

  915. have felt that

  916. and rejoice in the fact

  917. that we've been brought in.

  918. If anyone in this room

  919. is not in Christ,

  920. an Ethiopian eunuch

  921. was saved by God.

  922. You are not beyond

  923. His mercy.

  924. So the means of God's

  925. saving grace.

  926. Secondly,

  927. the recipient of God's

  928. saving grace.

  929. And third,

  930. and lastly,

  931. the signs of God's

  932. saving grace

  933. or the evidences

  934. of God's saving grace.

  935. And there's three

  936. found in our text.

  937. Number one,

  938. there is a response

  939. to the gospel,

  940. to the good news

  941. preached.

  942. There's a response.

  943. response.

  944. And we see that.

  945. We get a hint of that

  946. in the fact

  947. that the eunuch

  948. wants to be baptized.

  949. Philip has gone on

  950. to explain to him

  951. what ought to now happen

  952. because he's placed faith

  953. in Jesus Christ.

  954. Now,

  955. just quickly,

  956. group participation.

  957. How many of your translations

  958. have a verse 37?

  959. And you noticed

  960. when I read it

  961. that I jumped over.

  962. Anybody?

  963. Anybody?

  964. Man, we have great translations.

  965. Good for you.

  966. Oh, we got one.

  967. Sometimes it'll be

  968. in a parenthesis

  969. with an explanation,

  970. a little parenthetical

  971. or bracketed.

  972. Verse 37

  973. will likely say

  974. something like this.

  975. And Philip said,

  976. this is a response

  977. to verse 36,

  978. See, here is water.

  979. What prevents me

  980. from being baptized?

  981. Verse 37.

  982. And Philip said,

  983. If you believe

  984. with all your heart,

  985. you may.

  986. And he answered and said,

  987. I believe that Jesus Christ

  988. is the Son of God.

  989. And then verse 38.

  990. And he commands

  991. the chariot

  992. to stop.

  993. Now,

  994. the reason that it's not in,

  995. notice those little numbers

  996. as you're reading

  997. down through there,

  998. that it's not in many

  999. of your translations

1000. but it is in some

1001. or it is in there

  1002. with some brackets

  1003. and an explanation,

  1004. is because the earliest

  1005. and the most reliable

  1006. transcripts

  1007. do not include

  1008. verse 37.

  1009. Some later

  1010. copy of copy.

  1011. And translators

  1012. are very faithful

  1013. to the scripture.

  1014. They're very careful

  1015. about what they do

  1016. and don't include.

  1017. And I would argue

1018. that it should be omitted

  1019. because those earliest

  1020. and most reliable

  1021. transcripts

  1022. do not have

  1023. that verse in there.

  1024. But,

  1025. all the same,

  1026. all the same,

  1027. he must have made

  1028. some profession

  1029. of faith.

  1030. Baptism

  1031. is not salvific.

  1032. It's a symbol.

  1033. It's a picture.

1034. We're meant to see it

  1035. as that.

  1036. Something to rejoice in.

  1037. It's a beautiful thing

  1038. to do

  1039. but it's not salvific.

  1040. Simply being

  1041. dunked underwater

  1042. or sprinkled

  1043. or anything,

  1044. any nature of baptism

  1045. is not salvific.

  1046. Romans 10,

  1047. 9 and 10.

  1048. Paul says,

  1049. if you confess

  1050. with your mouth

  1051. that Jesus is Lord

1052. and believe in your heart

  1053. that God raised him

  1054. from the dead,

  1055. you will be saved.

  1056. For with the heart

  1057. one believes

  1058. and is justified

  1059. and with the mouth

  1060. one confesses

  1061. and is saved.

  1062. So,

  1063. a proper

  1064. sign of God's

  1065. saving grace

  1066. is a response.

  1067. A response

  1068. proclaiming

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. is the Christ,

  1071. believing in

  1072. his person

  1073. and

  1074. his work.

  1075. A second sign

  1076. of God's

  1077. saving grace

  1078. is obedience

  1079. to the gospel.

  1080. Response

  1081. to the gospel.

  1082. Obedience

  1083. to the gospel.

  1084. So,

  1085. what does he do?

  1086. He sees water.

  1087. Again,

  1088. I would argue

  1089. by the Spirit's

  1090. great orchestration,

  1091. he sees water

  1092. and he commands

  1093. the chariot to stop

  1094. and they both

  1095. went down

  1096. into the water.

  1097. Philip and the eunuch

  1098. and he baptized him

1099. and then he came up

  1100. out of the water.

  1101. So,

  1102. there's obedience

  1103. to the gospel

  1104. and we see that

  1105. on Philip's part

  1106. as well.

  1107. Matthew 28,

  1108. 18 through 20.

  1109. And Jesus came

  1110. and said to them,

  1111. people know this

  1112. as the Great Commission,

  1113. all authority

  1114. on heaven and earth

  1115. is given to me.

  1116. Go therefore

  1117. and make disciples

  1118. of all nations.

  1119. Here's Philip,

  1120. part of that process,

  1121. the Spirit of God

  1122. using him,

  1123. baptizing them

  1124. in the name

  1125. of the Father

  1126. and the Son

  1127. and the Holy Spirit.

  1128. Teachings to observe

1129. all that I've commanded you

  1130. and behold,

  1131. I'm with you always

1132. to the end of the age.

  1133. Philip is obedient

  1134. to the gospel.

  1135. This man professes

  1136. faith in Christ,

  1137. Philip says,

1138. you need to get baptized.

  1139. The man says,

  1140. there's water

  1141. and they do it.

  1142. There's obedience

  1143. on the eunuch's part.

  1144. Matthew 3,

  1145. 13 through 15.

  1146. Jesus,

  1147. the very beginning

  1148. of his ministry,

  1149. comes from Galilee

  1150. to the Jordan

  1151. to John.

  1152. The John we know

  1153. is John the Baptist.

  1154. There was not

  1155. a Baptist denomination

  1156. in that day.

  1157. Some will call him

  1158. John the Baptizer.

  1159. I appreciate that.

  1160. He comes to Jordan

  1161. to John

1162. to be baptized by him.

  1163. Jesus, right?

  1164. Righteous, perfect.

  1165. He comes to John

1166. to be baptized by him.

  1167. This was a baptism

  1168. of repentance, right?

1169. It was meant to be

  1170. a picture of that.

  1171. 14, Matthew 3.

  1172. John would have

  1173. prevented him saying,

1174. I need to be baptized

  1175. by you.

1176. And do you come to me?

  1177. But Jesus answered him.

  1178. So this is Jesus

  1179. in the Jewish faith,

  1180. a follower of God,

  1181. has not sinned.

  1182. He's not become

  1183. regenerate at this point.

  1184. Right?

  1185. But Jesus says,

1186. let it be so now,

1187. for thus it is fitting

  1188. for us to fulfill

  1189. all righteousness.

  1190. And the text says,

  1191. then John consented.

  1192. Right?

  1193. Jesus, our Lord,

1194. set for us an example

  1195. in believer's baptism.

  1196. Right?

  1197. Professing faith

  1198. in Jesus Christ

  1199. and then being baptized

  1200. as a picture

  1201. of what has happened.

  1202. Right?

  1203. That we've been

  1204. laid to death,

  1205. our old self,

  1206. and that we've risen

1207. to have life in Him.

  1208. So there's obedience

  1209. on Philip's part,

  1210. on the eunuch's part.

  1211. And then they were

  1212. obedient to the method.

  1213. They were obedient

  1214. to the method.

  1215. Now hear this.

  1216. They would have had

  1217. water with them.

  1218. They were traveling

  1219. the desert road.

  1220. And they could have

  1221. maintained their momentum

  1222. and Philip could have

  1223. sprinkled the eunuch.

  1224. Right?

  1225. That could have happened.

  1226. Right?

1227. Lean your head back here.

  1228. Splash a little water

  1229. on your head.

  1230. But they stopped.

  1231. They saw water

  1232. and they stopped.

  1233. And the text says

  1234. that they went down

  1235. into the water

  1236. and then they came

  1237. up out

  1238. of the water.

  1239. water.

  1240. The Greek word

  1241. to baptize,

  1242. baptizo,

  1243. means to plunge

  1244. or immerse.

  1245. Some Greek scholars

  1246. who aren't Baptists,

  1247. I want to add.

  1248. Greek scholars,

  1249. not Baptists,

  1250. of different traditions

  1251. that don't do this

  1252. this way,

  1253. have rendered the word

  1254. to dunk repeatedly

  1255. or drown.

  1256. My addition

  1257. to that argument,

  1258. and I'm not upset

  1259. about it,

  1260. it doesn't matter,

  1261. I'm just telling you

  1262. why we go through

  1263. all the trouble

  1264. of filling this

  1265. giant cattle trough

  1266. with so much water

  1267. and cleaning up

  1268. afterwards.

  1269. It's meant to be

  1270. a picture of what's

  1271. happened.

  1272. We've been buried

  1273. with Christ

  1274. in his death

  1275. and we've been

  1276. raised to walk

  1277. in newness of life.

  1278. It pictures that

  1279. more clearly.

  1280. Tongue in cheek,

  1281. I've joked with you

  1282. that when we begin

  1283. to lay people

  1284. on the ground

  1285. when they die

  1286. and splash dirt

  1287. on their face,

  1288. and that's our method,

  1289. maybe we'll go

  1290. with that route.

  1291. But until then,

  1292. the picture is

  1293. so much clearer

  1294. and that's what people

  1295. are professing

  1296. when they're baptized.

  1297. I have placed

  1298. believing faith

  1299. in Jesus Christ.

  1300. I've been buried

1301. with him in his death,

  1302. I've been raised

  1303. with him,

  1304. I've been set free

  1305. from sin and guilt

1306. and all that accompanies it.

  1307. I've been reconciled

  1308. to God

  1309. in Christ.

  1310. So we see

  1311. response to the gospel,

  1312. obedience to the gospel,

  1313. and finally we see

  1314. rejoicing in the gospel.

  1315. The last part

  1316. of verse 39,

  1317. Philip's taken away

  1318. and the eunuch

  1319. saw him

  1320. no more,

  1321. which is just such

  1322. an interesting factual thing

  1323. that Luke records.

  1324. He's not astounded,

1325. he just doesn't see him anymore,

1326. and he went on his way

  1327. rejoicing.

1328. He goes on his way

  1329. rejoicing.

  1330. Beloved,

  1331. those who place

  1332. believing faith in Christ

  1333. will rejoice

  1334. for that renewal

  1335. in their lives.

  1336. Baptism

  1337. was an outer symbol

  1338. of an inner reality,

1339. and you can already see

1340. in the life of this man

  1341. who's reading from Isaiah,

  1342. and he's troubled

  1343. by the text,

1344. he gets an answer to it,

  1345. he responds in faith,

  1346. he's baptized,

  1347. and now he rejoices.

  1348. Romans 6, 3 and 4.

  1349. Paul says,

  1350. Do you not know

  1351. that all of us

  1352. who have been baptized

  1353. into Christ Jesus

  1354. were baptized

  1355. into his death?

  1356. We were buried,

  1357. therefore,

  1358. with him by baptism

  1359. into death

  1360. in order that,

  1361. just as Christ

1362. was raised from the dead

1363. by the glory of the Father,

  1364. we too might walk

  1365. in newness of life.

  1366. Let's pray together.
