  1. All of Acts 10 this morning.

  2. So, kind of after talking to Nathan, it became pretty clear that really, it would be really hard to divide this up.

  3. ! It would be best if we just preached all the way through it.

  4. And as you look at the text, as you're glancing over it, you see that there's so much there.

  5. And especially if you're familiar with the Bible, too, you know that there's a lot of the weeds there that you can really easily get lost in.

  6. Because we're talking about some really, really complex topics this morning.

  7. And there's probably about six little mini sermons in there that you really could use as a springboard to talk about so many different things.

  8. So, how do you make just one concise sermon?

  9. That's the thing that I've been praying about this week and that I've been thinking about in this morning is,

  10. I want this to be clear. I want there to be clarity.

  11. I want us to walk away with an understanding of the text and for us to be changed by the Lord.

  12. As I was looking through some of the commentaries on this text, I came upon this quote by R.C. Spirrell.

  13. So, he says,

  14. So, now there's no pressure on me or any pressure on you.

  15. We can kind of look at this text and discern what is God teaching the original people that were reading this text?

  16. What is he teaching the people that were going through this story?

  17. And then what is he teaching us right now?

  18. Is that text relevant to our situation right now?

  19. And I would say an overwhelming yes.

  20. So, the way that I'm going to do this, I just, after looking through a lot of the commentaries and looking over this text,

  21. there's not, I can't really present this sermon to you in this really clever way of this happened and this happened and this happened.

  22. So, what I'm going to really do is I'm just going to walk through the text with you this morning.

  23. I meant that, that I don't have clever bullet points.

  24. I'm just not that clever.

  25. But, the text is really powerful and so what we're going to do is we're going to walk through it together

  26. and we're going to explain some of the things that God's doing here.

  27. So, but the, kind of the theme, if you're taking notes,

  28. the thing that I want you to be thinking about as we're going through this text together is

  29. how does God relentlessly pursue sinners of every kind?

  30. How does he do it in this text?

  31. How has he been doing it in Acts?

  32. How has he been doing that so far in the times that we've been talking as community groups?

  33. So, how does God relentlessly pursue sinners of every kind?

  34. So, with that, I do want to take a second and just pray and ask the Lord that he would give clarity,

  35. that he would allow our hearts to understand this text.

  36. If you've been bringing, whatever it is that you brought in,

  37. whatever it is that you're about to leave and go towards this morning,

  38. I believe that God has something to say to us from his text and that that is extremely relevant

  39. and that we pay attention to that.

  40. So, let me just pray for us real quickly.

  41. Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your word.

  42. Thank you that we get to meet in public this morning without fear,

  43. without shame, that God, the majority of the people in this room have a copy of your word.

  44. And we know that those pages, these words have been fought over and then have died over these words.

  45. And that you've preserved this text so that we can look at it, God.

  46. This is not just another story.

  47. This is not just another piece of wisdom literature.

  48. But it is your word, Lord.

  49. We believe it is from you.

  50. So, Lord, would you speak to us through your text this morning?

  51. God, the man or woman who feels alienated from you this morning, who feels hopeless,

  52. God, would you bring them in?

  53. Or would you make this message clear for those of us that have grown cold to the gospel,

  54. have grown apathetic to it, Lord?

  55. I pray that you would wake our hearts up to it, God.

  56. We love you.

  57. Please give me clarity as I preach this morning.

  58. God, I just pray out with David that the words in my mouth and the meditations in my heart

  59. would be pleasing and acceptable in your sight.

  60. We ask this in your name.

  61. Amen.

  62. Okay.

  63. So, what has God been doing so far in Acts?

  64. I'm not going to spend 20 minutes going over that because we've been talking about it for the past couple of months.

  65. But just to paint the picture so that we all understand what God has been doing.

  66. Let's kind of look at it really, really quickly.

  67. So, Jesus, before he's crucified, he promised the Holy Spirit.

  68. He says, hey, it's better that I leave and that the Holy Spirit come than it would be for me to stay.

  69. Which is kind of an insane statement because I know that if you've read that, you've kind of thought to yourself,

  70. like, I would much rather have Jesus around here in the flesh.

  71. But we learn, we soon learn why he says those things.

  72. So, he says that.

  73. He's crucified.

  74. He's resurrected.

  75. And then he's ascended.

  76. And then right after he ascends to heaven, there's this insane event that happens called Pentecost.

  77. And that happens in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  78. Then after that, we see these massive conversions.

  79. We see Acts chapter 2, verse 41.

    Acts 2:41

  80. We see, like, 3,000 people coming in one day.

  81. We see Peter preach a sermon and 5,000 people come.

  82. And we keep seeing the Lord add day after day to their number.

  83. So, we see these massive conversions despite persecution, right?

  84. Like, we've kind of started getting to that a little bit more as far as Stephen was persecuted.

  85. But we still see the church growing.

  86. And then we see these wonders and signs.

  87. We see people being healed.

  88. We see people being resurrected from the dead.

  89. So, just imagine this picture if you're kind of in the early church.

  90. Like, all these things that are happening.

  91. You've seen, like, your world's kind of been changed over the past year or so.

  92. So, and then the text that we talked about last week that Clay preached on, he talked about healing.

  93. And this situation in Acts 9, verses 32 through the end about Peter healing someone and then raising someone from the dead.

    Acts 9:32

  94. So, if you haven't gotten a chance to listen to that sermon, I really, really recommend it.

  95. Clay talks about, does God still heal today?

  96. If he does, why does he?

  97. And if he chooses not to heal in certain circumstances, why does he not?

  98. So, I would really recommend going back and listening to that.

  99. But if you've listened to all those things that I just talked about, 95% of those things really pertain to Jews only, right?

  100. Pentecost, mostly Jews.

  101. The massive conversions, we see Paul or Saul as Jewish.

  102. We see all these things.

  103. And the trend that's kind of going throughout them is Jews.

  104. We do see Peter go to the Samaritans.

  105. And the Samaritans are kind of, they're not quite Gentiles, but they're not quite Jews.

  106. They're kind of in between.

  107. So, with the exception of, does anyone know what would be the exception to that list?

  108. Someone that wouldn't be a Jew.

  109. The Ethiopian, right?

  110. So, we had that story where the Ethiopian was converted.

  111. And then he goes back.

  112. That's kind of the catch point, is that he goes back to Ethiopia.

  113. He doesn't stay with the church and fellowship with the church.

  114. So, we see that 95% of the things that I just listed really pertains to Jews only.

  115. So, let's pick it up in chapter 10 at verse 1 and see that this story, that narrative, that list is about to change.

  116. Let me rip some more.

  117. So, starting in verse 1.

  118. At Caesarea, there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian cohort.

  119. A devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.

  120. About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him,

  121. Cornelius.

  122. And he stared at him in terror and said, What is it, Lord?

  123. And he said to him, Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.

  124. And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter.

  125. He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.

  126. When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him.

  127. And having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

  128. So just as a pause there, we're going to get through the rest of the text, but I want to take a moment and kind of talk about who is this Cornelius guy.

  129. Clay found a way to slip himself into my sermon, so I have to give him credit about what does it mean to be a Roman centurion of the Italian cohort.

  130. And I say that because Clay is our history buff.

  131. And so what does this mean for Cornelius to be Roman and the Italian cohort?

  132. So it's most likely that he would be comparable to a captain in the Roman army.

  133. And he is Roman with a capital R.

  134. So think about that for a second.

  135. He's from the Italian cohort.

  136. That would mean that his origins are from Italy.

  137. He's not someone who was kind of drafted into the Roman army because as the Roman army spans their reach, they're going to take over new lands, right?

  138. And they're going to bring people into their army.

  139. So, and but they would be considered Roman at that point, but they're not from Rome.

  140. And so Cornelius is from Rome.

  141. Okay, what are the other things that we see about him?

  142. We see that he's a devout man.

  143. In verse 2, he fears God with all his household.

  144. He gave alms generously.

  145. And he prays.

  146. Okay, so this word you'll see in verse 2.

  147. Look, it says a devout man who fears God.

  148. That is actually a term, like a label, not just describing him necessarily with just a kind of a bunch of random adjectives.

  149. So, there's a couple of labels that the Bible gives to different groups of people that are in this geographic area.

  150. So, there's Jews.

  151. There would be Gentiles.

  152. There would be Samaritans, which we talked about earlier, which is kind of they, I don't know if this is an offensive term, but like half-breeds, you know what I mean?

  153. Between Jews and Gentiles.

  154. And then there were God-fears.

  155. And God-fears were Gentiles who conformed to the Judaic law and the customs.

  156. So, that means that Cornelius probably got to see all the gods of the Roman Empire and then decided that he most likely, or that he agreed with most of the Jewish God.

  157. So, that meant that he worshipped God of the Torah and that he, but the only difference would be that he wasn't circumcised.

  158. I'm sorry, I'm trying to say that right.

  159. So, the only difference would be that he's not circumcised.

  160. He worships God.

  161. He gives alms.

  162. We see that he's devout, but he's not circumcised.

  163. And then he prays.

  164. So, this is kind of a, this is a really good description of Cornelius, right?

  165. Like, if you're reading this and you're looking at Cornelius, this is a good guy, right?

  166. He does all those things.

  167. Like, how many of you would like to be described in that way?

  168. That's a good description.

  169. You're devout.

  170. You fear God.

  171. You give alms.

  172. You pray continuously.

  173. And we find out that God hears his prayers.

  174. So, Cornelius is a good guy.

  175. But I want to ask the question, is Cornelius saved?

  176. Is he forgiven?

  177. Is he clean in the eyes of God?

  178. I mean, and what do you say?

  179. Like, he, there are all those things that we just listed.

  180. He sounds like a really, really good guy.

  181. Like, he does everything right.

  182. And even, I can hear the objection of someone saying, wait, are you suggesting that he's not saved?

  183. Like, look at all the things that he does.

  184. Look, let's look at, or so what, are you saying that you're better than him?

  185. Are you saying that Mother Teresa, if, with all the good things that she did, that if she didn't believe in Christ, that she's not saved?

  186. This is the question that you're going to get when you talk to other people about the gospel.

  187. Because Cornelius, on paper, looks like a really, really good guy.

  188. But we learn that he is later on referred to as not saved.

  189. And so that's the offense of the gospel that our, the offense of the gospel is that even our best works,

  190. the things that we do that you might volunteer at the homeless shelter out of the goodness of your heart,

  191. you might not cuss, you might not drink, you might not be as bad as someone else.

  192. But the offense of the gospel is that our best deeds, our best things that we do, apart from God,

  193. are like filthy rags before him.

  194. That it doesn't matter, that God's not saying like, God's not impressed with Cornelius' record.

  195. That in the eyes of God of being considered holy.

  196. And I'm going to, I will say Cornelius is a good guy.

  197. He's a moral guy.

  198. But in terms of holiness, Cornelius is not.

  199. And so you would say, how do you know that?

  200. If you turn one page over to the left or to the right, you're going to see in verse 14,

  201. Peter is later on recounting this story.

  202. And this is a little bit of a giveaway, but he says in verse 13,

  203. Peter's recounting this story of what I'm about to talk about with Cornelius.

  204. And he says, and he told us how he had, how Cornelius had seen this angel stand in his house and say,

  205. Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter.

  206. He will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.

  207. So despite Cornelius' good-looking resume, he's not in the eyes of God forgiven.

  208. He's not saved.

  209. There's something missing.

  210. So that tells us that to be righteous before God requires more than attending a church service.

  211. It requires more than being a good person.

  212. It requires more than giving your money away to the poor.

  213. It requires more than even just praying to God.

  214. That is a huge statement.

  215. There's another problem with Cornelius.

  216. Cornelius is a God-fear, but he is still a Gentile.

  217. In that he is unclean according to the Jewish law.

  218. So, what do I mean by that?

  219. Surely, if you know anything about Jewish traditions and Jewish customs,

  220. you knew that they followed a very strict dietary law.

  221. That's kind of the thing, the problem that Jesus keeps running into as he's talking to the Pharisees,

  222. is these laws that they have that Moses set up in the Old Testament.

  223. So, for reference, what I'm talking about there is specifically Leviticus 11 when it comes down to food.

  224. So, in Leviticus 11, God is laying out this law to Moses,

  225. and he's telling him all the foods that you can and cannot eat.

  226. He says, hey, like, you can't eat a pig.

  227. You can't eat a rock badger.

  228. You can't eat the things that are crawling on the ground, swarming bees.

  229. He lists off all of these different animals that they cannot eat.

  230. So, they've got dietary laws.

  231. The next thing is circumcision.

  232. So, Cornelius is neither of those things.

  233. So, in the eyes of the Jewish law, Cornelius is not clean.

  234. Now, see, the Jews actually used these verses in Leviticus as justification

  235. to put in bigger divide between them and the Gentiles,

  236. just to kind of understand what's going on in that culture

  237. and what that divide actually looks like.

  238. I found a quote from a rabbi in the Talmud,

  239. which is when we're talking about the Old Testament combined with rabbinic law,

  240. which is things that they kind of added on to the Old Testament laws.

  241. This rabbi said this about a Gentile.

  242. He said,

  243. When a Jew has a Gentile in his clutches,

  244. another Jew may go to the same Gentile,

  245. lend him money, and in turn deceive him,

  246. so that the Gentile shall be ruined.

  247. For the property of a Gentile, according to our law, belongs to no one.

  248. And the first Jew that passes it has full right to seize it.

  249. So, that's kind of the animosity and the divide that we're talking about here.

  250. And is that from God? No.

  251. I want to make that clear.

  252. God sets up these dietary laws to set his people apart,

  253. and the Jewish people ran with that even further

  254. and came up with things like what I just said.

  255. So, what's the point about the food?

  256. Have you ever wondered about that?

  257. Like, why did God say,

  258. You can't eat these foods.

  259. You must have your cloth of these different strands.

  260. You can't have tattoos.

  261. Like, all those Levitical laws,

  262. not the Mosaic law,

  263. not the laws of the Ten Commandments.

  264. But, have you ever wondered,

  265. What was the point of why God did all that?

  266. And are those things still in place today?

  267. And a lot of people would say,

  268. It's for health reasons,

  269. as far as circumcision and food goes.

  270. And there might be some legitimacy to that.

  271. But the bigger thing that I want you to get

  272. is that God was setting his people apart.

  273. So, turn with me to Leviticus 11,

  274. just so you can kind of see with your own eyes.

  275. And then look down at verse 43.

  276. Okay.

  277. So, what's the point of all these laws?

  278. What's the point of all these rules?

  279. And so, in Leviticus 11,

  280. God very clearly points it out.

  281. Okay, this is okay.

  282. This is not okay.

  283. Here's why this is not okay.

  284. Here's this is okay.

  285. This is not okay to eat.

  286. So, he keeps going.

  287. It's very, very specific.

  288. And then in verse 43 of Leviticus 11,

  289. it says,

  290. You shall not make yourselves

  291. detestable with any swarming thing that swarms,

  292. and you shall not defile yourselves with them

  293. and become unclean through them.

  294. So, here it is.

  295. Verse 44.

  296. For I am the Lord your God.

  297. Consecrate yourselves, therefore,

  298. and be holy, for I am holy.

  299. You shall not defile yourselves

  300. with any swarming thing that crawls on the ground.

  301. So, you get that 44 at the very beginning

  302. where he says,

  303. For.

  304. So, it's basically like God's saying,

  305. For this reason.

  306. He just listed off all these animals,

  307. and now God's saying,

  308. Do you want to know why I'm saying this?

  309. This is why.

  310. I'm saying that you can be set apart

  311. so that the other nations could look

  312. at the nation of God in Israel

  313. and see that they dressed differently,

  314. that they ate differently,

  315. that all their customs were different,

  316. but those things were meant to be

  317. a shadow of how God was making them holy

  318. and set apart as a people.

  319. So, this reflects to us something

  320. about the nature of God,

  321. that God has a concern for holiness.

  322. These strict laws,

  323. they point out to God how,

  324. they point us out

  325. how God has a big concern

  326. about his people being set apart

  327. and being different.

  328. So, going back to Cornelius,

  329. he is not those things.

  330. He's not circumcised.

  331. It's unlikely that he prescribed

  332. to the Jewish dietary law.

  333. So, if you are Peter,

  334. if you're a Jew,

  335. if you're looking at Cornelius,

  336. let's just be honest,

  337. even though he's got this good record,

  338. he's unclean, right?

  339. Like, he's not clean before God.

  340. And that even came down to the fact

  341. that, like, a Jew would not touch

  342. the glass of a Gentile

  343. after he had put it to his mouth

  344. because it was then,

  345. at that point,

  346. considered unclean.

  347. So, isn't Cornelius hopeless

  348. in the eyes of a law?

  349. Like, what hope is there for Cornelius?

  350. What hope is there for this man

  351. to be saved, to be forgiven?

  352. Is there any hope for him?

  353. In the eyes of a law or the Jew,

  354. there's no hope for him, right?

  355. There is this barrier

  356. that's separating Cornelius

  357. from being forgiven

  358. and being a son of God.

  359. And with that,

  360. we need to talk about how

  361. we're similar to Cornelius

  362. in that same spot.

  363. There is a barrier

  364. between us and God.

  365. The fact that

  366. if you are in Christ right now,

  367. at one point,

  368. you were considered unclean.

  369. You were considered unforgiven.

  370. Or if you're not a believer today,

  371. you stand in that spot

  372. where God looks at us

  373. and we're not clean before Him

  374. because God's standard

  375. is holiness and righteousness.

  376. And Cornelius,

  377. it doesn't matter how good he is,

  378. he falls short of that record

  379. because he's not.

  380. He's not righteous

  381. and he's not holy.

  382. And Cornelius,

  383. at this point,

  384. in his own power,

  385. he's hopeless to change.

  386. How does the Bible

  387. describe an unbeliever?

  388. Think about it for a second.

  389. Think about those verses

  390. that you've thought about

  391. where the Bible said,

  392. hey, you were this at one point

  393. before you were in Christ.

  394. How does the Bible describe that?

  395. Surely some of you

  396. are thinking about Ephesians 2, right?

  397. Where it says,

  398. you were dead

  399. in your transgressions and sins.

  400. in the sins in which

  401. you once walked,

  402. following the course of this world,

  403. following the prince

  404. of the power of the air,

  405. the spirit that is now at work

  406. in the sons of disobedience,

  407. among whom we all once lived

  408. in the passions of our flesh,

  409. carrying out the desires

  410. of the body and the mind,

  411. and were by nature

  412. children of wrath

  413. like the rest of mankind.

  414. God describes us as dead.

  415. So, a dead man can't get up

  416. and change his behavior.

  417. A dead man can't get up

  418. to take a pill

  419. to become healthier.

  420. A dead man is dead.

  421. So, what hope

  422. is there for a dead man?

  423. And maybe that's a state

  424. that we need to remind ourselves of

  425. is that for the unbeliever,

  426. there is no hope

  427. in and of yourself

  428. to change.

  429. Do you remember that time

  430. when you were an unbeliever

  431. or if you still are

  432. where there was things

  433. that you saw about your life

  434. and you felt hopeless

  435. to change those things entirely?

  436. They seem too big.

  437. Even as believers right now,

  438. we still see some of those things

  439. in our lives.

  440. It's like,

  441. I just can't overcome this sin.

  442. I just can't get past this.

  443. I've tried and I've tried

  444. and I've tried

  445. and I can't do it.

  446. It makes me think of

  447. the story that

  448. when I worked,

  449. I still worked there,

  450. but I worked at a

  451. drug and alcohol

  452. treatment center.

  453. It's a 30-day treatment center

  454. where someone,

  455. people fly in

  456. all over the country

  457. and people that are struggling

  458. with different drugs

  459. and alcohol come there.

  460. They live there for 30 days

  461. and then they kind of

  462. go through a rehabilitation process

  463. and then they leave.

  464. And I remember working there

  465. and listening to this story

  466. about this one guy

  467. who was kind of a little bit

  468. of a troublemaker

  469. and he wasn't necessarily

  470. following all the rules

  471. and he was kind of on the line

  472. of whether he was going

  473. to be allowed to stay

  474. because the administration

  475. can make decisions like,

  476. hey, this guy's no good

  477. for this program.

  478. He needs to come back

  479. when he's ready.

  480. And I remember talking to him

  481. and kind of like thinking,

  482. maybe I can get a chance

  483. to just talk to this guy

  484. and just convince him like,

  485. hey man,

  486. this program's going to

  487. save your life.

  488. Like, you go back out

  489. and you could,

  490. this addiction could kill you.

  491. And me just thinking,

  492. all right,

  493. maybe I can say something

  494. to this guy.

  495. And I remember him walking up

  496. and I was talking to him

  497. and I was asking him

  498. how treatment was going

  499. and I said,

  500. what are you going to do

  501. when you leave?

  502. Are you going to go

  503. to an intensive outpatient?

  504. Are you going to go

  505. to sober living?

  506. Like, what are you going to do?

  507. And the guy was like,

  508. he looked at me in the eyes

  509. and he said,

  510. I'm going to go back

  511. to drinking.

  512. Are you kidding me?

  513. Like, I know I have a problem

  514. and I know I'm going to go

  515. right back to the bottle

  516. as soon as I leave.

  517. So I'm just here

  518. to do my time

  519. and do this program

  520. and leave.

  521. And I remember like hearing that

  522. and just the hopelessness

  523. kind of sank in to my heart

  524. and thinking about

  525. what hope is for this guy.

  526. He's pretty much

  527. all but given up on this.

  528. So how is God

  529. going to relentlessly pursue

  530. that attic at Black Bear?

  531. How is God going to

  532. relentlessly pursue

  533. this guy Cornelius

  534. who again,

  535. though his best efforts

  536. still fall short

  537. of God's standard

  538. of holiness

  539. and righteousness.

  540. How is God going

  541. to relentlessly pursue you

  542. if you might still be

  543. living in your sin?

  544. You might be not

  545. as bad as the next guy

  546. but your best actions

  547. still fall short

  548. of God's standard.

  549. And then an even bigger question

  550. is how is Jesus' commandment

  551. at the very end?

  552. What did he say

  553. at the very end

  554. of Matthew 28?

  555. He says,

  556. go and make disciples

  557. of just Jews.

  558. He says,

  559. go and make disciples

  560. of all nations.

  561. So how is that

  562. going to happen

  563. when there's this divide

  564. when Cornelius

  565. is unclean

  566. in the eyes of the law

  567. and the Jews?

  568. So let's pick it up

  569. back in verse 9.

  570. The next day

  571. as they were on their journey

  572. and approaching the city

  573. Peter went up

  574. on the housetop

  575. about the sixth hour

  576. to pray

  577. and he became hungry

  578. and wanted something to eat

  579. but while they were preparing it

  580. he fell into a trance

  581. and saw the heavens opened

  582. and something like

  583. a great sheet descending

  584. being let down

  585. by its four corners

  586. upon the earth.

  587. In it were all kinds

  588. of animals

  589. and reptiles

  590. and birds of the air

  591. and there came

  592. a voice to him

  593. rise Peter

  594. kill and eat.

  595. But Peter said

  596. by no means Lord

  597. for I have never eaten

  598. anything that is common

  599. or unclean.

  600. And the voice came to him

  601. again a second time

  602. what God has made clean

  603. do not call common.

  604. This happened three times

  605. and the thing was taken up

  606. at once to heaven.

  607. Now while Peter

  608. was inwardly perplexed

  609. as to what the vision

  610. that he had seen

  611. might mean

  612. behold the men

  613. who were sent

  614. by Cornelius

  615. having made inquiry

  616. for Simon's house

  617. stood at the gate

  618. and called out

  619. to ask

  620. whether Simon

  621. who was called

  622. Peter

  623. was lodging there.

  624. And while Peter

  625. was pondering the vision

  626. the spirit said to him

  627. behold

  628. three men

  629. are looking for you

  630. rise

  631. and go down

  632. and accompany them

  633. without hesitation

  634. for I have sent them.

  635. And Peter went down

  636. to the men

  637. and said

  638. I'm the one

  639. you are looking for

  640. what is the reason

  641. for your coming?

  642. And they said

  643. Cornelius

  644. a centurion

  645. an upright

  646. and God-fearing man

  647. who is well spoken

  648. of by the whole

  649. Jewish nation

  650. was directed

  651. by a holy angel

  652. to send for you

  653. to come to his house

  654. and hear what you

  655. have to say.

  656. So he invited them

  657. to be his guests.

  658. The next day

  659. he rose

  660. and went away

  661. with them

  662. and some of the brothers

  663. from Joppa

  664. accompanied him

  665. and on the following day

  666. they entered Caesarea.

  667. Cornelius was expecting them

  668. and had called together

  669. his relatives

  670. and close friends.

  671. When Peter entered

  672. Cornelius met him

  673. and fell down

  674. at his feet

  675. and worshipped him.

  676. But Peter lifted him up

  677. saying

  678. stand up

  679. I too am a man

  680. and as he talked

  681. with him

  682. he went in

  683. and found

  684. many persons gathered

  685. and he said to them

  686. you yourselves

  687. know how unlawful

  688. it is for a Jew

  689. to associate with

  690. or to visit anyone

  691. of another nation

  692. but God

  693. has shown me

  694. that I should not

  695. call any person

  696. common or unclean

  697. so when I was sent for

  698. I came without objection

  699. I asked them

  700. why you sent for me

  701. and Cornelius said

  702. four days ago

  703. about this hour

  704. I was praying in my house

  705. at the ninth hour

  706. and behold

  707. a man stood before me

  708. in bright clothing

  709. and said

  710. Cornelius your prayer

  711. has been heard

  712. and your alms

  713. have been remembered

  714. before God

  715. send therefore

  716. to Joppa

  717. and ask for Simon

  718. who is called Peter

  719. he is lodging

  720. in the house

  721. of Simon a tanner

  722. by the sea

  723. so I sent for you

  724. at once

  725. and you have been

  726. kind enough to come

  727. now therefore

  728. we are all here

  729. in the presence of God

  730. to hear all that you

  731. have been commanded

  732. by the Lord

  733. okay

  734. so

  735. real quick

  736. let's look at

  737. Peter's first response

  738. what does he say

  739. he says

  740. so he has this vision

  741. these sheets come down

  742. all animals

  743. of every kind

  744. come down

  745. and it says

  746. rise

  747. kill and eat Peter

  748. and his first response

  749. is by no means Lord

  750. so

  751. let's not jump

  752. on Peter

  753. too quickly

  754. and say

  755. like hey

  756. how dare you

  757. respond to God

  758. like that

  759. Peter's response

  760. is actually

  761. really similar

  762. to the prophet

  763. Daniel

  764. if you think

  765. about it

  766. he objected

  767. to the dietary

  768. he objected

  769. to the food

  770. that he was being

  771. served and said

  772. no I have to

  773. observe my customs

  774. because this food

  775. that you're feeding

  776. me here in Babylon

  777. is unclean

  778. but it's interesting

  779. though

  780. like you and I

  781. have read the rest

  782. of the story

  783. we know what's coming

  784. we know that God's

  785. not just talking

  786. about food

  787. right

  788. we know that God

  789. wasn't just

  790. taking bacon off

  791. the list of things

  792. not to eat

  793. but Peter

  794. if you think

  795. so Peter had

  796. been with Jesus

  797. he had been with

  798. the resurrected Jesus

  799. he had seen

  800. Pentecost come

  801. he had been

  802. preaching to

  803. Samaritans

  804. he had probably

  805. heard the story

  806. about the Ethiopian

  807. eunuch

  808. right

  809. like he's probably

  810. heard all these

  811. things but he

  812. still doesn't

  813. get it

  814. he still doesn't

  815. get that

  816. that through

  817. Christ's work

  818. that divide

  819. is gone

  820. that now

  821. the only thing

  822. that makes us

  823. clean or unclean

  824. in God's sight

  825. is whether we

  826. have believing

  827. faith

  828. in Jesus

  829. he still doesn't

  830. get it

  831. isn't that

  832. interesting

  833. like this is

  834. a thick-headed

  835. dude

  836. but everyone

  837. else is probably

  838. like that

  839. in that same

  840. spot

  841. we see that

  842. because of

  843. all the other

  844. responses

  845. Peter had been

  846. with the

  847. resurrected Jesus

  848. but he still

  849. didn't get it

  850. so what

  851. changed

  852. why is it

  853. that God

  854. is saying

  855. hey you can

  856. eat all these

  857. foods now

  858. doesn't that

  859. seem a little

  860. bit like God

  861. is flip-flopping

  862. right

  863. doesn't it

  864. seem a little

  865. bit like that

  866. doesn't it

  867. seem like God's

  868. changing his

  869. mind

  870. so I would

  871. say no

  872. and here's

  873. why

  874. you know

  875. he said yes

  876. and that's the

  877. end of the

  878. sermon

  879. but no

  880. so

  881. so what

  882. changed

  883. obviously

  884. something

  885. changed

  886. so let me

  887. just as a

  888. little example

  889. so let's

  890. say there

  891. is a father

  892. who has a

  893. five-year-old

  894. son

  895. and his son

  896. is standing

  897. on a cross

  898. from the

  899. street

  900. and it's

  901. a busy

  902. intersection

  903. and his son

  904. is about to

  905. cross the

  906. street

  907. and his father

  908. says don't

  909. know don't

  910. cross

  911. why because

  912. he's five

  913. years old

  914. and that would

  915. be irresponsible

  916. of his dad

  917. to just let

  918. his son cross

  919. this really

  920. busy intersection

  921. okay so

  922. then let's

  923. go forward

  924. ten years

  925. and now his

  926. son is 15

  927. and he's

  928. standing across

  929. the other

  930. side of the

  931. street and

  932. his son and

  933. his dad says

  934. hey like come

  935. on over to

  936. me now

  937. and so then

  938. the son

  939. crosses the

  940. busy intersection

  941. did the

  942. father flip

  943. flop

  944. no you

  945. would just

  946. say the

  947. situation

  948. changed

  949. the son

  950. grew up

  951. things have

  952. changed

  953. things are

  954. different now

  955. and so now

  956. it is appropriate

  957. for his son

  958. to cross the

  959. street

  960. in a similar

  961. way

  962. God is not

  963. changing his

  964. mind but the

  965. fulfillment of

  966. the law has

  967. come and

  968. things have

  969. changed

  970. so if you

  971. have your

  972. ESV Bible

  973. look at

  974. verse 15

  975. so it says

  976. and the voice

  977. came to him

  978. a second time

  979. what God has

  980. made clean

  981. do not call

  982. common

  983. so we're

  984. actually kind

  985. of at a

  986. loss for our

  987. ESV translation

  988. the NASB

  989. renders this

  990. what God

  991. has cleansed

  992. no longer

  993. call unclean

  994. so God

  995. is changing

  996. things

  997. did he change

  998. it right at

  999. that moment

  1000. no

  1001. the truth

  1002. is that

  1003. he changed

  1004. it with

  1005. Jesus

  1006. and the

  1007. thing is

  1008. that we

  1009. can

  1010. if you're

  1011. really

  1012. thinking

  1013. about it

  1014. Jesus

  1015. was saying

  1016. this the

  1017. whole time

  1018. flip over

  1019. to Mark

  1020. starting in

  1021. chapter 2

  1022. chapter 2

  1023. okay so

  1024. the point

  1025. that I'm

  1026. getting at

  1027. in this

  1028. text is

  1029. that I'm

  1030. saying that

  1031. it kind

  1032. of appears

  1033. a little

  1034. bit like

  1035. Jesus is

  1036. disregarding

  1037. a lot

  1038. of laws

  1039. like that's

  1040. kind of

  1041. what is

  1042. the friction

  1043. between him

  1044. and the

  1045. Pharisees

  1046. a lot

  1047. of the

  1048. times

  1049. so we're

  1050. not going

  1051. to read

  1052. all these

  1053. verses

  1054. but I'm

  1055. just going

  1056. to have

  1057. you

  1058. follow me

  1059. here

  1060. so

  1061. this

  1062. in chapter

  1063. 2

  1064. at the

  1065. very end

  1066. of 23

  1067. he's

  1068. going

  1069. through

  1070. and his

  1071. disciples

  1072. are walking

  1073. through a

  1074. grain field

  1075. and they're

  1076. picking grain

  1077. and they're

  1078. eating it

  1079. and the

  1080. Pharisees

  1081. have an

  1082. issue

  1083. with that

  1084. and they're

  1085. like why

  1086. are you

  1087. guys eating

  1088. on the

  1089. Sabbath

  1090. they had

  1091. very strict

  1092. rules

  1093. about what

  1094. you could

  1095. and could

  1096. not do

  1097. on the

  1098. Sabbath

  1099. how far

  1100. you could

  1101. walk

  1102. what kind

  1103. of work

  1104. you could

  1105. do

  1106. in order

  1107. to keep

  1108. the

  1109. Sabbath

  1110. day

  1111. holy

  1112. and

  1113. Jesus

  1114. gives them

  1115. this example

  1116. of don't

  1117. you know

  1118. the story

  1119. of when

  1120. David

  1121. did this

  1122. when David

  1123. ate

  1124. the bread

  1125. of the

  1126. priest

  1127. and then

  1128. the verse

  1129. that I want

  1130. to draw your

  1131. attention to

  1132. is verse

  1133. 27

  1134. and he says

  1135. for the

  1136. Sabbath

  1137. so the

  1138. son of

  1139. man

  1140. is Lord

  1141. even of

  1142. the

  1143. Sabbath

  1144. and then

  1145. keep looking

  1146. at verse

  1147. chapter 3

  1148. there's this

  1149. situation

  1150. where this

  1151. guy has

  1152. this

  1153. withered

  1154. hand

  1155. and

  1156. Jesus

  1157. is about

  1158. to heal

  1159. this man

  1160. with withered

  1161. hand

  1162. but he

  1163. knows

  1164. what the

  1165. Pharisees

  1166. are thinking

  1167. they don't

  1168. want him

  1169. to heal

  1170. it

  1171. because

  1172. they think

  1173. that that's

  1174. something

  1175. blasphemous

  1176. that he's

  1177. doing

  1178. but instead

  1179. he does

  1180. heal

  1181. and they

  1182. get mad

  1183. and then

  1184. flip over

  1185. a couple

  1186. pages

  1187. to chapter

  1188. 7

  1189. now this

  1190. is the

  1191. kicker

  1192. that's so

  1193. important

  1194. to get

  1195. look at

  1196. chapter 7

  1197. verse 14

  1198. so

  1199. Jesus

  1200. says

  1201. and he

  1202. called the

  1203. people to

  1204. him again

  1205. and said

  1206. to them

  1207. hear me

  1208. all of

  1209. you

  1210. and

  1211. understand

  1212. there is

  1213. nothing

  1214. outside a

  1215. person

  1216. that by

  1217. going

  1218. into

  1219. him

  1220. can

  1221. defile

  1222. him

  1223. but the

  1224. things

  1225. that come

  1226. out of

  1227. a person

  1228. are what

  1229. defile

  1230. him

  1231. whoa

  1232. that's so

  1233. not in

  1234. line with

  1235. what we

  1236. just looked

  1237. at in

  1238. Leviticus

  1239. right

  1240. like that's

  1241. Jesus

  1242. don't you

  1243. don't you

  1244. know your

  1245. Old Testament

  1246. don't you

  1247. know that

  1248. yes it

  1249. is

  1250. what

  1251. defiles

  1252. a person

  1253. like

  1254. no no no

  1255. you're

  1256. wrong

  1257. like

  1258. you eat

  1259. these meats

  1260. you eat

  1261. these different

  1262. types of

  1263. animals

  1264. and that

  1265. defiles you

  1266. that makes

  1267. you unclean

  1268. in the eyes

  1269. of the law

  1270. so is

  1271. Jesus

  1272. seemingly

  1273. disregarding

  1274. these laws

  1275. it seems

  1276. like it

  1277. right

  1278. like if

  1279. you look

  1280. at it

  1281. first glance

  1282. and you

  1283. really look

  1284. at Leviticus

  1285. and you

  1286. look at

  1287. to now

  1288. it seems

  1289. like Jesus

  1290. is disregarding

  1291. this

  1292. so

  1293. how is

  1294. he not

  1295. how is it

  1296. that Jesus

  1297. is right

  1298. in what

  1299. he does

  1300. what

  1301. is the

  1302. point of

  1303. these laws

  1304. what is the

  1305. point of

  1306. these Leviticus

  1307. laws

  1308. what is the

  1309. point of

  1310. all these

  1311. laws

  1312. it's really

  1313. made pretty

  1314. clear

  1315. the disciples

  1316. seem to

  1317. get it

  1318. in Acts

  1319. you can

  1320. flip back

  1321. over to

  1322. Acts 10

  1323. where we're

  1324. going to

  1325. kind of

  1326. pick back

  1327. up there

  1328. but

  1329. earlier in

  1330. Acts 3

  1331. they quote

  1332. Moses

  1333. from Deuteronomy

  1334. and they

  1335. said

  1336. Moses

  1337. even said

  1338. this at

  1339. one point

  1340. Moses

  1341. even said

  1342. that the

  1343. Lord

  1344. God

  1345. will raise

  1346. up for

  1347. you a

  1348. prophet

  1349. like me

  1350. from your

  1351. brothers

  1352. you shall

  1353. listen to

  1354. him

  1355. in whatever

  1356. he tells

  1357. you

  1358. it shall

  1359. be that

  1360. every soul

  1361. who does

  1362. not listen

  1363. to that

  1364. prophet

  1365. shall be

  1366. destroyed

  1367. from the

  1368. people

  1369. so Moses

  1370. is actually

  1371. talking about

  1372. Jesus

  1373. he's talking

  1374. about how

  1375. Jesus is going

  1376. to be the

  1377. fulfillment

  1378. of all these

  1379. laws

  1380. so they're

  1381. pointing to

  1382. Jesus

  1383. so I guess

  1384. that begs another

  1385. question of

  1386. what's the

  1387. point of the

  1388. law

  1389. Romans 7

  1390. Paul talks

  1391. about the

  1392. law being

  1393. kind of like

  1394. a mirror to

  1395. you to show

  1396. you how

  1397. filthy you

  1398. are

  1399. Paul says

  1400. if I

  1401. didn't

  1402. have

  1403. the

  1404. law

  1405. I

  1406. wouldn't

  1407. know

  1408. that

  1409. I

  1410. was

  1411. in

  1412. sin

  1413. if

  1414. someone

  1415. didn't

  1416. say

  1417. hey

  1418. you can't

  1419. rob a

  1420. store

  1421. I

  1422. wouldn't

  1423. know

  1424. that

  1425. it's

  1426. wrong

  1427. to

  1428. not

  1429. rob

  1430. a

  1431. store

  1432. so

  1433. the

  1434. law

  1435. acts

  1436. as

  1437. a

  1438. mirror

  1439. the

  1440. most

  1441. the

  1442. big

  1443. point

  1444. here

  1445. is

  1446. that

  1447. Moses

  1448. and

  1449. the

  1450. prophets

  1451. they

  1452. all

  1453. are

  1454. pointing

  1455. to

  1456. an

  1457. event

  1458. they're

  1459. all

  1460. pointing

  1461. to

  1462. Jesus

  1463. is

  1464. coming

  1465. so when

  1466. Jesus

  1467. shows up

  1468. on the

  1469. scene

  1470. it's

  1471. like

  1472. the

  1473. Pharisees

  1474. like

  1475. they're

  1476. missing

  1477. it

  1478. they're

  1479. missing

  1480. the

  1481. thing

  1482. that

  1483. the

  1484. law

  1485. was

  1486. supposed

  1487. to

  1488. point

  1489. them

  1490. towards

  1491. Jesus

  1492. is

  1493. the

  1494. fulfillment

  1495. of all

  1496. these

  1497. things

  1498. if

  1499. you've

  1500. heard it

  1501. said

  1502. that

  1503. a

  1504. huge

  1505. point

  1506. of

  1507. the

  1508. law

  1509. was

  1510. to

  1511. show

  1512. us

  1513. how

  1514. we

  1515. couldn't

  1516. keep

  1517. it

  1518. that

  1519. that's

  1520. a

  1521. huge

  1522. purpose

  1523. of

  1524. the

  1525. Leviticus

  1526. law

  1527. all

  1528. these

  1529. rules

  1530. isn't

  1531. that

  1532. why

  1533. Jesus

  1534. says

  1535. hey

  1536. unless

  1537. your

  1538. righteousness

  1539. surpasses

  1540. that

  1541. of

  1542. the

  1543. scribes

  1544. and

  1545. Pharisees

  1546. the

  1547. guys

  1548. that

  1549. kept

  1550. all

  1551. these

  1552. rules

  1553. that

  1554. kept

  1555. all

  1556. the

  1557. dietary

  1558. laws

  1559. down

  1560. to

  1561. the

  1562. minute

  1563. details

  1564. and

  1565. Jesus

  1566. is

  1567. saying

  1568. you

  1569. have

  1570. to

  1571. are

  1572. hopeless

  1573. just

  1574. like

  1575. Cornelius

  1576. okay

  1577. so

  1578. what's

  1579. Peter's

  1580. second

  1581. response

  1582. so

  1583. Peter

  1584. hears

  1585. this

  1586. he soon

  1587. realized

  1588. this is

  1589. about

  1590. more

  1591. than

  1592. food

  1593. that

  1594. God's

  1595. doing

  1596. here

  1597. and

  1598. his

  1599. response

  1600. is

  1601. complete

  1602. obedience

  1603. he

  1604. understands

  1605. that

  1606. this

  1607. vision

  1608. is

  1609. more

  1610. than

  1611. about

  1612. food

  1613. we

  1614. see

  1615. that

  1616. in

  1617. verse

  1618. 28

  1619. he

  1620. says

  1621. you

  1622. yourselves

  1623. know

  1624. how

  1625. unlawful

  1626. it is

  1627. for a

  1628. Jew

  1629. to

  1630. associate

  1631. with

  1632. or

  1633. to

  1634. visit

  1635. anyone

  1636. of

  1637. another

  1638. nation

  1639. but

  1640. God

  1641. has

  1642. shown

  1643. me

  1644. that

  1645. I

  1646. should

  1647. not

  1648. call

  1649. any

  1650. person

  1651. common

  1652. or

  1653. unclean

  1654. which

  1655. is

  1656. a little

  1657. weird

  1658. because

  1659. that

  1660. vision

  1661. was

  1662. about

  1663. foods

  1664. but

  1665. Peter

  1666. is

  1667. smart

  1668. enough

  1669. to

  1670. make

  1671. the

  1672. connection

  1673. oh

  1674. you're

  1675. not

  1676. just

  1677. talking

  1678. about

  1679. food

  1680. right

  1681. now

  1682. you're

  1683. talking

  1684. about

  1685. all

  1686. people

  1687. so

  1688. what

  1689. does

  1690. he

  1691. do

  1692. he

  1693. does

  1694. two

  1695. things

  1696. that

  1697. would

  1698. be

  1699. in

  1700. violation

  1701. of

  1702. Jewish

  1703. law

  1704. verse

  1705. 23

  1706. so

  1707. he

  1708. invited

  1709. them

  1710. in

  1711. to

  1712. be

  1713. his

  1714. guests

  1715. these

  1716. are

  1717. Gentiles

  1718. and

  1719. Jews

  1720. are

  1721. not

  1722. supposed

  1723. to

  1724. house

  1725. Gentiles

  1726. inside

  1727. their

  1728. home

  1729. the

  1730. next

  1731. thing

  1732. that

  1733. we

  1734. see

  1735. is

  1736. that

  1737. he

  1738. walks

  1739. with

  1740. them

  1741. from

  1742. Joppa

  1743. where

  1744. Peter

  1745. is

  1746. to

  1747. Caesarea

  1748. which

  1749. is

  1750. about

  1751. 40

  1752. miles

  1753. and

  1754. that's

  1755. not

  1756. something

  1757. a

  1758. Jewish

  1759. person

  1760. is

  1761. supposed

  1762. to

  1763. do

  1764. with

  1765. a

  1766. Gentile

  1767. so

  1768. Peter

  1769. gets

  1770. that

  1771. he

  1772. has

  1773. to

  1774. be

  1775. completely

  1776. !

  1777. obedient

  1778. to

  1779. this

  1780. he

  1781. understands

  1782. that

  1783. his

  1784. way

  1785. of

  1786. doing

  1787. things

  1788. is

  1789. subservient

  1790. to

  1791. what

  1792. God

  1793. says

  1794. his

  1795. traditions

  1796. the

  1797. things

  1798. that

  1799. he

  1800. holds

  1801. close

  1802. he

  1803. lets

  1804. those

  1805. go

  1806. to

  1807. be

  1808. obedient

  1809. to

  1810. God

  1811. that's

  1812. his

  1813. response

  1814. to

  1815. outsiders

  1816. Peter

  1817. he

  1818. allows

  1819. his

  1820. reputation

  1821. to

  1822. be

  1823. tarnished

  1824. in the

  1825. eyes

  1826. of

  1827. other

  1828. people

  1829. because

  1830. he's

  1831. being

  1832. seen

  1833. with

  1834. Gentiles

  1835. he's

  1836. hosting

  1837. them

  1838. in

  1839. his

  1840. home

  1841. but

  1842. his

  1843. response

  1844. is

  1845. complete

  1846. obedience

  1847. what

  1848. is

  1849. our

  1850. response

  1851. to

  1852. in a

  1853. similar

  1854. way

  1855. to

  1856. those

  1857. what

  1858. we

  1859. would

  1860. consider

  1861. taboos

  1862. what

  1863. would

  1864. be

  1865. our

  1866. response

  1867. to

  1868. outsiders

  1869. college

  1870. students

  1871. what

  1872. is

  1873. your

  1874. response

  1875. towards

  1876. those

  1877. that

  1878. have

  1879. a

  1880. different

  1881. lifestyle

  1882. than

  1883. you

  1884. and

  1885. choose

  1886. to

  1887. party

  1888. and

  1889. drink

  1890. and

  1891. what

  1892. about

  1893. what's

  1894. your

  1895. response

  1896. towards

  1897. those

  1898. that

  1899. are

  1900. socially

  1901. awkward

  1902. that

  1903. aren't

  1904. inside

  1905. your

  1906. friend

  1907. group

  1908. we

  1909. see

  1910. God

  1911. relentlessly

  1912. pursuing

  1913. Cornelius

  1914. and even

  1915. more so

  1916. relentlessly

  1917. pursuing

  1918. Peter

  1919. to get

  1920. him

  1921. to

  1922. understand

  1923. God's

  1924. greater

  1925. purpose

  1926. here

  1927. and

  1928. Peter

  1929. submits

  1930. that

  1931. to

  1932. God

  1933. are

  1934. you

  1935. submitting

  1936. your

  1937. preferences

  1938. your

  1939. taboos

  1940. the

  1941. people

  1942. that

  1943. you

  1944. most

  1945. easily

  1946. jive

  1947. with

  1948. like

  1949. are

  1950. you

  1951. submitting

  1952. those

  1953. to

  1954. God

  1955. for

  1956. the

  1957. sake

  1958. of

  1959. pursuing

  1960. those

  1961. for

  1962. the

  1963. kingdom

  1964. what

  1965. about

  1966. parents

  1967. what about

  1968. those who

  1969. choose to

  1970. raise their

  1971. children

  1972. differently

  1973. than you

  1974. are you

  1975. letting go

  1976. of your

  1977. preferences

  1978. for the

  1979. kingdom

  1980. and glory

  1981. of God

  1982. are you

  1983. pursuing

  1984. those that

  1985. choose to

  1986. raise their

  1987. children

  1988. differently

  1989. than you

  1990. that have

  1991. a different

  1992. household

  1993. than you

  1994. that come

  1995. from broken

  1996. homes

  1997. and you're

  1998. not used

  1999. to that

  2000. in the

  2001. midst

  2002. of a

  2003. really

  2004. divided

  2005. political

  2006. season

  2007. what's

  2008. your

  2009. response

  2010. to those

  2011. that are

  2012. on the

  2013. opposite

  2014. end of

  2015. the

  2016. political

  2017. spectrum

  2018. than you

  2019. when you

  2020. read the

  2021. news

  2022. articles

  2023. and you

  2024. start to

  2025. get

  2026. frustrated

  2027. and your

  2028. blood

  2029. starts to

  2030. boil

  2031. are you

  2032. praying for

  2033. those people

  2034. when you

  2035. encounter

  2036. someone

  2037. are you

  2038. seeing

  2039. the bigger

  2040. purpose

  2041. here

  2042. that

  2043. God's

  2044. desire

  2045. is that

  2046. all

  2047. nations

  2048. and all

  2049. peoples

  2050. would be

  2051. sons

  2052. and daughters

  2053. the list

  2054. could go

  2055. on and

  2056. on and

  2057. on

  2058. okay

  2059. I'm

  2060. going to

  2061. wrap it

  2062. up I

  2063. promise

  2064. let's

  2065. look at

  2066. verse

  2067. 34

  2068. so

  2069. Peter

  2070. opened his

  2071. mouth and

  2072. said

  2073. truly I

  2074. understand

  2075. that God

  2076. shows no

  2077. partiality

  2078. but in

  2079. every nation

  2080. anyone who

  2081. fears him

  2082. and does

  2083. what is

  2084. right is

  2085. acceptable

  2086. to him

  2087. as for

  2088. the word

  2089. that he

  2090. sent to

  2091. Israel

  2092. preaching

  2093. good news

  2094. of peace

  2095. through

  2096. Jesus

  2097. Christ

  2098. he is

  2099. Lord of

  2100. all

  2101. you

  2102. yourselves

  2103. know

  2104. what

  2105. happened

  2106. throughout

  2107. all

  2108. Judea

  2109. beginning

  2110. from

  2111. Galilee

  2112. after

  2113. the

  2114. baptism

  2115. that

  2116. God

  2117. that

  2118. John

  2119. proclaimed

  2120. how

  2121. God

  2122. anointed

  2123. Jesus

  2124. of

  2125. Nazareth

  2126. with

  2127. the

  2128. Holy

  2129. Spirit

  2130. and

  2131. with

  2132. power

  2133. he

  2134. went

  2135. about

  2136. doing

  2137. good

  2138. and

  2139. healing

  2140. all

  2141. who

  2142. were

  2143. oppressed

  2144. !

  2145. by the

  2146. devil

  2147. for

  2148. God

  2149. is

  2150. with

  2151. him

  2152. and

  2153. we

  2154. are

  2155. witnesses

  2156. !

  2157. of

  2158. all

  2159. that

  2160. he

  2161. did

  2162. both

  2163. in

  2164. the

  2165. country

  2166. of

  2167. the

  2168. Jews

  2169. and

  2170. in

  2171. Jerusalem

  2172. they

  2173. put him

  2174. to

  2175. death

  2176. by

  2177. hanging

  2178. him

  2179. on

  2180. a

  2181. tree

  2182. but

  2183. God

  2184. raised

  2185. him

  2186. up

  2187. on

  2188. the

  2189. third

  2190. day

  2191. and

  2192. made

  2193. him

  2194. to

  2195. appear

  2196. not

  2197. to

  2198. all

  2199. the

  2200. people

  2201. but

  2202. to

  2203. us

  2204. who

  2205. have

  2206. been

  2207. chosen

  2208. by

  2209. God

  2210. as

  2211. witnesses

  2212. who

  2213. ate

  2214. and

  2215. drank

  2216. with

  2217. him

  2218. after

  2219. he

  2220. rose

  2221. from

  2222. the

  2223. dead

  2224. and

  2225. he

  2226. commanded

  2227. us

  2228. to

  2229. preach

  2230. to

  2231. the

  2232. people

  2233. and

  2234. testify

  2235. that

  2236. he

  2237. is

  2238. the

  2239. one

  2240. !

  2241. appointed

  2242. !

  2243. Is it

  2244. Peter's

  2245. personal

  2246. testimony?

  2247. Is it

  2248. about

  2249. Peter

  2250. saying

  2251. I

  2252. denied

  2253. Jesus

  2254. and

  2255. he

  2256. restored

  2257. me?

  2258. Is it

  2259. about

  2260. how

  2261. I

  2262. once

  2263. was a

  2264. drunkard

  2265. and

  2266. then

  2267. I

  2268. came

  2269. to

  2270. Jesus

  2271. because

  2272. he

  2273. healed

  2274. me?

  2275. Or

  2276. is it

  2277. that

  2278. I

  2279. got

  2280. a

  2281. better

  2282. life

  2283. from

  2284. Jesus

  2285. and

  2286. I

  2287. found

  2288. my

  2289. happiness

  2290. in

  2291. Jesus?

  2292. That's

  2293. not

  2294. the

  2295. message

  2296. that

  2297. Peter

  2298. preaches.

  2299. I'm

  2300. not

  2301. saying

  2302. that

  2303. those

  2304. are

  2305. bad

  2306. messages.

  2307. !

  2308. But

  2309. when

  2310. Peter's

  2311. given

  2312. the

  2313. shot

  2314. by

  2315. Cornelius

  2316. he

  2317. says

  2318. hey

  2319. we're

  2320. all

  2321. here

  2322. my

  2323. whole

  2324. household

  2325. is

  2326. here

  2327. my

  2328. neighbors

  2329. are

  2330. here

  2331. my

  2332. co-workers

  2333. are

  2334. here

  2335. we

  2336. hear

  2337. there's

  2338. a

  2339. message

  2340. you

  2341. got

  2342. to

  2343. preach

  2344. Peter

  2345. understands

  2346. it's

  2347. go

  2348. time

  2349. and

  2350. he

  2351. doesn't

  2352. preach

  2353. his

  2354. testimony

  2355. he

  2356. doesn't

  2357. preach

  2358. how

  2359. God

  2360. has

  2361. given

  2362. him

  2363. a

  2364. better

  2365. life

  2366. though

  2367. some

  2368. of

  2369. those

  2370. things

  2371. may

  2372. or

  2373. may

  2374. not

  2375. be

  2376. true

  2377. but

  2378. he

  2379. preaches

  2380. the

  2381. life

  2382. the

  2383. death

  2384. and

  2385. the

  2386. resurrection

  2387. of

  2388. Jesus

  2389. that

  2390. is

  2391. crucial

  2392. to

  2393. understand

  2394. so

  2395. when

  2396. you're

  2397. given

  2398. that

  2399. moment

  2400. when

  2401. someone's

  2402. asking

  2403. you

  2404. what's

  2405. the

  2406. hope

  2407. that

  2408. you

  2409. have

  2410. what

  2411. makes

  2412. you

  2413. different

  2414. what

  2415. is

  2416. it

  2417. that

  2418. you

  2419. fall

  2420. back

  2421. on

  2422. again

  2423. personal

  2424. experience

  2425. is

  2426. great

  2427. I'm

  2428. not

  2429. saying

  2430. that's

  2431. a

  2432. bad

  2433. thing

  2434. but

  2435. I'm

  2436. saying

  2437. Peter

  2438. sees

  2439. this

  2440. as

  2441. an

  2442. opportunity

  2443. to

  2444. preach

  2445. the

  2446. gospel

  2447. so

  2448. that's

  2449. what

  2450. he

  2451. does

  2452. we

  2453. see

  2454. that

  2455. in

  2456. verse

  2457. 38

  2458. he

  2459. talks

  2460. about

  2461. how

  2462. God

  2463. anointed

  2464. Jesus

  2465. we

  2466. see

  2467. him

  2468. talking

  2469. about

  2470. his

  2471. life

  2472. how

  2473. he

  2474. was

  2475. perfect

  2476. how

  2477. he

  2478. healed

  2479. people

  2480. from

  2481. diseases

  2482. we

  2483. see

  2484. him

  2485. talk

  2486. about

  2487. his

  2488. death

  2489. we

  2490. see

  2491. him

  2492. talk

  2493. about

  2494. his

  2495. resurrection

  2496. in

  2497. verse

  2498. 40

  2499. and

  2500. then

  2501. there's

  2502. this

  2503. purpose

  2504. that's

  2505. big

  2506. for

  2507. us

  2508. to

  2509. understand

  2510. in

  2511. verse

  2512. 42

  2513. it

  2514. says

  2515. and

  2516. he

  2517. commanded

  2518. !

  2519. That's a whole

  2520. other sermon

  2521. right there

  2522. the message

  2523. that we're

  2524. preaching

  2525. is of

  2526. his

  2527. life

  2528. his

  2529. death

  2530. and

  2531. his

  2532. resurrection

  2533. and

  2534. for

  2535. what

  2536. purpose

  2537. because

  2538. he's

  2539. coming

  2540. to

  2541. judge

  2542. the

  2543. living

  2544. and

  2545. the

  2546. dead

  2547. every

  2548. single

  2549. person

  2550. that's

  2551. ever

  2552. existed

  2553. on

  2554. the

  2555. earth

  2556. God

  2557. will

  2558. be

  2559. the

  2560. judge

  2561. and

  2562. that

  2563. everyone

  2564. who

  2565. believes

  2566. in

  2567. his

  2568. name

  2569. would

  2570. receive

  2571. forgiveness

  2572. of

  2573. sins

  2574. Christians

  2575. like

  2576. that's

  2577. our

  2578. message

  2579. that's

  2580. the

  2581. gospel

  2582. message

  2583. that

  2584. we're

  2585. sharing

  2586. that

  2587. we're

  2588. carrying

  2589. to

  2590. our

  2591. co-workers

  2592. and to

  2593. our

  2594. friends

  2595. and our

  2596. family

  2597. okay

  2598. and then

  2599. finishing up

  2600. in verse

  2601. 44

  2602. while

  2603. Peter was

  2604. still saying

  2605. these things

  2606. the Holy

  2607. Spirit

  2608. fell on

  2609. all who

  2610. heard

  2611. the

  2612. word

  2613. and

  2614. the

  2615. believers

  2616. from

  2617. among

  2618. the

  2619. circumcised

  2620. who

  2621. had

  2622. come

  2623. with

  2624. Peter

  2625. were

  2626. amazed

  2627. because

  2628. the

  2629. gift

  2630. of

  2631. the

  2632. Holy

  2633. Spirit

  2634. was

  2635. poured

  2636. out

  2637. even

  2638. on

  2639. the

  2640. Gentiles

  2641. for

  2642. they

  2643. were

  2644. hearing

  2645. them

  2646. speaking

  2647. in

  2648. tongues

  2649. and

  2650. extolling

  2651. God

  2652. then

  2653. Peter

  2654. declared

  2655. can

  2656. anyone

  2657. withhold

  2658. water

  2659. from

  2660. baptizing

  2661. these

  2662. people

  2663. who

  2664. have

  2665. received

  2666. the

  2667. Holy

  2668. Spirit

  2669. just

  2670. as

  2671. we

  2672. have

  2673. and

  2674. he

  2675. commanded

  2676. them

  2677. to be

  2678. baptized

  2679. in the

  2680. name

  2681. of

  2682. Jesus

  2683. Christ

  2684. then

  2685. they

  2686. asked

  2687. him

  2688. to

  2689. remain

  2690. for

  2691. some

  2692. days

  2693. which

  2694. is

  2695. really

  2696. interesting

  2697. because

  2698. the

  2699. Holy

  2700. Spirit

  2701. interrupts

  2702. Peter's

  2703. message

  2704. !

  2705. it

  2706. seems

  2707. a little

  2708. rude

  2709. and

  2710. does

  2711. it

  2712. remind

  2713. you

  2714. of

  2715. any

  2716. event

  2717. that's

  2718. happened

  2719. maybe

  2720. a few

  2721. chapters

  2722. ago

  2723. does

  2724. it

  2725. remind

  2726. you

  2727. of

  2728. Pentecost

  2729. so

  2730. specifically

  2731. in this

  2732. text

  2733. that's

  2734. opening up

  2735. the can

  2736. of

  2737. the Holy

  2738. Spirit

  2739. being poured

  2740. out on

  2741. unbelievers

  2742. and

  2743. speaking in

  2744. tongues

  2745. that's a

  2746. whole other

  2747. conversation

  2748. but in

  2749. this text

  2750. specifically

  2751. what is

  2752. the point

  2753. of the Holy

  2754. Spirit

  2755. being poured

  2756. out on

  2757. this way

  2758. on the

  2759. Gentiles

  2760. doesn't it

  2761. confirm

  2762. something

  2763. to the

  2764. Jews

  2765. who think

  2766. that salvation

  2767. can't come

  2768. to the

  2769. Gentiles

  2770. unless

  2771. they're

  2772. circumcised

  2773. it reveals

  2774. to them

  2775. the Holy

  2776. Spirit

  2777. was poured

  2778. out on

  2779. them

  2780. after

  2781. what

  2782. after

  2783. they

  2784. just

  2785. heard

  2786. the

  2787. message

  2788. and

  2789. received

  2790. it

  2791. so

  2792. it's

  2793. undeniable

  2794. to these

  2795. witnessing

  2796. Jews

  2797. that the

  2798. Holy

  2799. Spirit

  2800. is

  2801. poured

  2802. out

  2803. that

  2804. it's

  2805. for

  2806. all

  2807. people

  2808. that

  2809. they

  2810. don't

  2811. need

  2812. to

  2813. clean

  2814. up

  2815. their

  2816. life

  2817. that

  2818. God

  2819. invites

  2820. them

  2821. exactly

  2822. where

  2823. they

  2824. are

  2825. you've

  2826. heard

  2827. it said

  2828. that God

  2829. accepts

  2830. you

  2831. just as

  2832. you are

  2833. that's

  2834. not

  2835. true

  2836. God

  2837. invites

  2838. you

  2839. exactly

  2840. where

  2841. you

  2842. are

  2843. and that's

  2844. what he

  2845. does

  2846. here

  2847. so

  2848. in summary

  2849. what does

  2850. this tell

  2851. us about

  2852. the heart

  2853. of God

  2854. we've

  2855. talked

  2856. about

  2857. how God

  2858. is

  2859. relentlessly

  2860. pursuing

  2861. sinners

  2862. of all

  2863. kinds

  2864. we're

  2865. seeing

  2866. here

  2867. that

  2868. God

  2869. relentlessly

  2870. pursues

  2871. sinners

  2872. of all

  2873. nations

  2874. gosh

  2875. this is

  2876. where

  2877. I said

  2878. earlier

  2879. that I

  2880. feel

  2881. like

  2882. you

  2883. could

  2884. have

  2885. six

  2886. different

  2887. sermons

  2888. talking

  2889. about

  2890. God

  2891. has

  2892. this

  2893. heart

  2894. for

  2895. the

  2896. nations

  2897. not

  2898. just

  2899. one

  2900. group

  2901. of

  2902. people

  2903. not

  2904. just

  2905. the

  2906. Jewish

  2907. people

  2908. not

  2909. just

  2910. Americans

  2911. not

  2912. just

  2913. people

  2914. that

  2915. align

  2916. with

  2917. western

  2918. thought

  2919. but

  2920. all

  2921. peoples

  2922. does

  2923. your

  2924. heart

  2925. ache

  2926. to

  2927. see

  2928. different

  2929. cultures

  2930. and

  2931. people

  2932. saved

  2933. gosh

  2934. it's

  2935. I

  2936. just

  2937. like

  2938. you

  2939. and

  2940. me

  2941. God

  2942. crosses

  2943. these

  2944. social

  2945. taboos

  2946. Peter

  2947. crosses

  2948. these

  2949. social

  2950. taboos

  2951. it's

  2952. some

  2953. people

  2954. will try

  2955. to

  2956. compare

  2957. this

  2958. divide

  2959. between

  2960. Jews

  2961. and

  2962. Gentiles

  2963. to

  2964. maybe

  2965. some

  2966. of

  2967. the

  2968. segregation

  2969. stuff

  2970. that

  2971. happened

  2972. here

  2973. in the

  2974. United

  2975. States

  2976. in the

  2977. 1960s

  2978. and

  2979. 70s

  2980. and

  2981. it's

  2982. not

  2983. comparable

  2984. I get

  2985. that there's

  2986. prejudice

  2987. there

  2988. but

  2989. this

  2990. was

  2991. something

  2992. that

  2993. was

  2994. established

  2995. by

  2996. God

  2997. early

  2998. in the

  2999. Old

  3000. Testament

  3001. and

  3002. then

  3003. God

  3004. abolishes

  3005. it

  3006. with

  3007. the

  3008. coming

  3009. of

  3010. Jesus

  3011. so

  3012. yes

  3013. there's

  3014. prejudice

  3015. that's

  3016. what's

  3017. common

  3018. with that

  3019. movement

  3020. or that

  3021. line of

  3022. thought

  3023. but

  3024. this is

  3025. not

  3026. comparable

  3027. and

  3028. I say

  3029. that

  3030. to

  3031. say

  3032. if

  3033. God

  3034. removed

  3035. the

  3036. divide

  3037. between

  3038. the

  3039. Jews

  3040. and

  3041. the

  3042. Gentiles

  3043. what

  3044. divide

  3045. are you

  3046. putting

  3047. up

  3048. right

  3049. now

  3050. between

  3051. you

  3052. and

  3053. another

  3054. people

  3055. group

  3056. someone

  3057. who's

  3058. of a

  3059. different

  3060. culture

  3061. someone

  3062. who's

  3063. of

  3064. different

  3065. traditions

  3066. are you

  3067. putting

  3068. that

  3069. if

  3070. God

  3071. hasn't

  3072. are you

  3073. doing

  3074. it

  3075. right

  3076. now

  3077. and

  3078. I'm

  3079. asking

  3080. do

  3081. we

  3082. mirror

  3083. this

  3084. God

  3085. has

  3086. this

  3087. relentless

  3088. pursuit

  3089. of

  3090. sinners

  3091. do

  3092. you

  3093. see

  3094. that

  3095. in

  3096. your

  3097. own

  3098. life

  3099. if

  3100. you

  3101. do

  3102. praise

  3103. God

  3104. and

  3105. ask

  3106. him

  3107. to

  3108. give

  3109. you

  3110. more

  3111. of

  3112. that

  3113. if

  3114. you

  3115. don't

  3116. fall

  3117. on

  3118. your

  3119. face

  3120. as

  3121. you

  3122. go

  3123. home

  3124. and

  3125. ask

  3126. God

  3127. to

  3128. give

  3129. you

  3130. a

  3131. heart

  3132. for

  3133. that

  3134. a

  3135. heart

  3136. that

  3137. that

  3138. relentlessly

  3139. proactively

  3140. pursues

  3141. that

  3142. doesn't

  3143. wait

  3144. for

  3145. them

  3146. to

  3147. come

  3148. to

  3149. us

  3150. but

  3151. that

  3152. goes

  3153. out

  3154. are

  3155. we

  3156. doing

  3157. that

  3158. in

  3159. Gainesville

  3160. in

  3161. Dahlonega

  3162. are

  3163. you

  3164. guys

  3165. doing

  3166. that

  3167. in

  3168. your

  3169. community

  3170. groups

  3171. are

  3172. you

  3173. guys

  3174. asking

  3175. those

  3176. questions

  3177. how

  3178. can

  3179. we

  3180. relentlessly

  3181. pursue

  3182. the

  3183. lost

  3184. around

  3185. us

  3186. just

  3187. like

  3188. God

  3189. do

  3190. we

  3191. mirror

  3192. that

  3193. what

  3194. about

  3195. even

  3196. here

  3197. this

  3198. morning

  3199. do

  3200. you

  3201. fall

  3202. back

  3203. into

  3204. your

  3205. clique

  3206. of

  3207. people

  3208. that

  3209. you

  3210. feel

  3211. !

  3212. comfortable

  3213. talking

  3214. to

  3215. there's

  3216. going

  3217. to be

  3218. a

  3219. time

  3220. when

  3221. we're

  3222. going

  3223. to

  3224. be

  3225. in

  3226. heaven

  3227. we're

  3228. going

  3229. to

  3230. have

  3231. all

  3232. the

  3233. fellowship

  3234. in the

  3235. world

  3236. to

  3237. talk

  3238. to

  3239. each

  3240. other

  3241. and

  3242. I

  3243. loved

  3244. how

  3245. Jerry

  3246. mentioned

  3247. that

  3248. a month

  3249. ago

  3250. about

  3251. one

  3252. of the

  3253. beautiful

  3254. things

  3255. about

  3256. Christians

  3257. is

  3258. the

  3259. fellowship

  3260. and

  3261. how

  3262. he

  3263. just

  3264. likes

  3265. to

  3266. sit

  3267. back

  3268. and watch

  3269. that

  3270. happen

  3271. and

  3272. that

  3273. needs

  3274. to

  3275. happen

  3276. but

  3277. we

  3278. also

  3279. need

  3280. to

  3281. have

  3282. this

  3283. point

  3284. where

  3285. we

  3286. are

  3287. relentlessly

  3288. pursuing

  3289. those

  3290. who

  3291. are

  3292. even

  3293. in

  3294. our

  3295. midst

  3296. today

  3297. so

  3298. I

  3299. pray

  3300. that

  3301. for us

  3302. I pray

  3303. that

  3304. for us

  3305. as a

  3306. church

  3307. that

  3308. we

  3309. would

  3310. be

  3311. marked

  3312. by

  3313. that

  3314. kind

  3315. of

  3316. relentless

  3317. pursuit

  3318. let's

  3319. pray
