  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word. Turn with me to the book of Ephesians, chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  2. I ask also at the same time that you take out the handout that was given to you on the way in.

  3. I hope it was that we managed to pull that off.

  4. If not, it's okay. That won't be detrimental to your study.

  5. The intention there is to give you a summary statement for the sermon today

  6. that you might mark it up, take a pen out and write, write additional notes.

  7. I would encourage you to take the text that I provided for you,

  8. not because I don't want you to have a copy of God's Word open in front of you.

  9. I don't want to remove things from their context.

  10. It's not what we're trying to accomplish by handing this printed out to you,

  11. but I want you to be able to mark on it.

  12. I want you to have the same translation that I'm using, which is the ESV,

  13. which is not an inspired translation.

  14. It's just a good one.

  15. It's okay if you have another, but this way you'll have those words there in front of you.

  16. If you're new to our fellowship, we typically do verse-by-verse exposition,

  17. and we have been as of late working through the book of Acts.

  18. This has been the great labor in front of us.

  19. We are on the cusp of starting chapter 11,

  20. but because we have just started as a church another church,

  21. we've multiplied into two congregations.

  22. Christ Family Church has become Christ Family Church Dahlonega.

  23. Welcome.

  24. And Christ Family Church Oakwood meeting really kind of flowery branch,

  25. but we're calling it CFC Oakwood,

  26. and they're meeting this morning even now.

  27. And we thought it would be good to take some time to focus and refocus,

  28. make sure that we're all on the same page,

  29. and we're all moving forward together into this next year.

  30. Just as a precursor to this,

  31. I really don't enjoy topical preaching.

  32. I enjoy preaching.

  33. I enjoy teaching things systematically,

  34. or having you at least understand things systematically.

  35. But it is a real work,

  36. because we come to a topic like gospel identity.

  37. Who are we in Christ?

  38. And there is so much to say.

  39. Even just listening to the three songs that we've sung,

  40. there's different things I'm going,

  41. oh, we could talk about that,

  42. and we could talk about it.

  43. And my head is starting to rewrite the sermon that I've already written.

  44. So I'll do my best this morning.

  45. We're going to look at Ephesians 1, verses 3-14.

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  46. And I know for some of you, that really gets you excited.

  47. Ephesians 1.

  48. We are not going to look at it in every bit of detail.

  49. And if that dramatically disappoints you,

  50. then I would suggest you care a bit too much about soteriology.

  51. Possibly.

  52. Possibly.

  53. But before I read it,

  54. let me start by reading to you the summary statement for this morning

  55. about our gospel identity,

  56. which reads as follows,

  57. By grace alone, through faith alone,

  58. in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone,

  59. we are justified before God,

  60. forgiven and adopted by Him.

  61. This gospel identity is our great motivation for worship.

  62. Now Ephesians 1, the word of the Lord,

  63. beginning in verse 3.

  64. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  65. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  66. even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,

  67. that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  68. In love He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ,

  69. according to the purpose of His will,

  70. to the praise of His glorious grace,

  71. with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.

  72. In Him we have redemption through His blood,

  73. the forgiveness of our trespasses,

  74. according to the riches of His grace,

  75. which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight,

  76. making known to us the mystery of His will,

  77. according to His purpose,

  78. which He set forth in Christ

  79. as a plan for the fullness of time

  80. to unite all things in Him,

  81. things in heaven and things on earth.

  82. In Him we have obtained an inheritance,

  83. having been predestined according to the purpose of Him

  84. who works all things according to the counsel of His will,

  85. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ

  86. might be to the praise of His glory.

  87. In Him you also,

  88. when you heard the word of truth,

  89. the gospel of your salvation,

  90. and believed in Him,

  91. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  92. who is the guarantee of our inheritance

  93. until we acquire possession of it,

  94. to the praise of His glory.

  95. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  96. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  97. We would all do well to listen to it

  98. in order to believe its promises

  99. and obey its commands.

  100. Now, before I break down the summary statement,

  101. I want to just take a few moments to look at verse 3.

  102. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

  103. who has blessed us in Christ

  104. with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.

  105. And you see this word root here being blessed.

  106. Blessed, blessed, and blessing.

  107. And I want to just point out to us very quickly

  108. that just in verse 3,

  109. we note that there is a blesser,

  110. the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  111. You will note that I read that word,

  112. blessed.

  113. I say blessed be.

  114. Not blessed be, but blessed be.

  115. And then when we get to who has blessed,

  116. we tend to read that differently.

  117. And the reason for that

  118. is because they are not the same Greek word.

  119. It's important to note this.

  120. The Greek word here translated,

  121. blessed be,

  122. is eulogio,

  123. which means blessed one or praised one.

  124. We get the word eulogy from this Greek word.

  125. A word of commendation.

  126. Typically, you think of a eulogy

  127. being preached at a funeral.

  128. All of the praise that's given to the person

  129. that has passed.

  130. All of the reasons that we love this person

  131. and the reasons that we will miss this person.

  132. Here, Paul is not communicating

  133. that God needs our blessing,

  134. but that He is already the blessed one.

  135. He is worthy of praise.

  136. He is worthy of honor.

  137. And He is the blesser.

  138. He has blessed us in Christ.

  139. So who are those who are blessed?

  140. Here meaning joyful, enriched.

  141. Those who are in Christ.

  142. Those who have believed in Christ

  143. are blessed by God.

  144. Apart from faith in Christ,

  145. a person is in a grievous state.

  146. Romans 3.23-26 reads,

  147. All have sinned and fall short

  148. of the glory of God.

  149. There's no one exempt from this.

  150. Everybody in the world

  151. is the condition of man.

  152. Apart from Christ,

  153. all have sinned.

  154. They all fall short.

  155. They all fail to measure up

  156. to the holiness required of God

  157. on our behalf to be pleasing before Him.

  158. And this puts us in this grievous state

  159. because God hates sin.

  160. And because God hates sinners,

  161. they are an affront to His character.

  162. The person who is in the state of sin

  163. openly and willingly rejects God as king.

  164. Good king.

  165. Given to us a good word

  166. and we disregard it.

  167. And we have it as our own.

  168. It's a saying that God hates sin

  169. but loves the sinner.

  170. And that's so true in part,

  171. but it's not completely true.

  172. Let me show you why.

  173. Psalm 11.5 says,

  174. The Lord tests the righteous,

  175. but His soul hates the wicked

  176. and the one who loves violence.

  177. The person who has not placed their faith in Christ

  178. is in a grievous state

  179. because the wrath of God

  180. is being stored up for them.

  181. Beloved, we must understand this.

  182. I hear on a regular basis

  183. about people who come and visit

  184. and why they won't come back.

  185. And some of you might find yourselves

  186. in that place this morning.

  187. One of my favorite complaints

  188. is that I don't make people

  189. feel good about themselves.

  190. building up your self-esteem.

  191. Be damned if you'll be damned.

  192. Care about your souls.

  193. This is a weighty thing that we do.

  194. Considering the truth of God

  195. and what it means for our lives

  196. matters.

  197. Doctrine matters.

  198. The truth opened up to you.

  199. This is why I say every Sunday,

  200. this is God's Word to us.

  201. You would do well to listen to it.

  202. Believe His promises.

  203. Obey His commands.

  204. You must understand

  205. that God hates sin.

  206. And God hates sinners.

  207. He will punish sinners.

  208. But the wonderful truth of the Gospel

  209. is that at the same time,

  210. God loves sinners.

  211. Praise Him.

  212. I was loved by God

  213. and saved by God

  214. as a sinner.

  215. So the statement,

  216. God hates sin but loves the sinner

  217. is partially true.

  218. It should say,

  219. God hates sin and hates the sinner

  220. and loves the sinner.

  221. And it's a difficult thing

  222. for us to comprehend that

  223. because we're not God.

  224. God.

  225. And we fail so often

  226. to understand God

  227. by His revealed Word

  228. because we want to put ourselves

  229. in His shoe.

  230. How dare we?

  231. We can't possibly understand

  232. how it is that God

  233. can both hate and love

  234. at the very same time,

  235. but He does.

  236. And there's a beautiful picture

  237. of this.

  238. The great high point of redemption,

  239. the cross of Christ.

  240. where He loves us

  241. as He hates us.

  242. He pours out His wrath

  243. on Jesus.

  244. The hatred towards us.

  245. Jesus takes us.

  246. Propitiation.

  247. He takes on our sin

  248. and He pours His wrath

  249. out on it.

  250. It's a great loving act

  251. on His part.

  252. Verse 24.

  253. Romans 3.

  254. And are justified

  255. by His grace as a gift

  256. through the redemption

  257. that is in Christ Jesus,

  258. whom God put forward

  259. as a propitiation,

  260. a blood sacrifice replacement

  261. to be received by faith.

  262. This was to show

  263. God's righteousness,

  264. God's perfection,

  265. because in His divine forbearance,

  266. He had passed over

  267. former sins.

  268. It was to show His righteousness

  269. at the present time

  270. so that He might be just

  271. punishing sin in Christ

  272. and the justifier

  273. of the one who has faith

  274. in Jesus.

  275. If you have believed in Christ,

  276. you are saved by God

  277. from God to God.

  278. God is the blesser.

  279. Those who have placed faith

  280. in Christ are the blessed.

  281. What is the blessing?

  282. Paul here writes

  283. that we're blessed

  284. with every spiritual blessing

  285. in the heavenly places.

  286. And there's much

  287. that could be said

  288. at this point.

  289. But the idea of it being

  290. a spiritual blessing

  291. speaks not to the extent

  292. of the blessing

  293. or the particular outworking

  294. of the blessing.

  295. Paul's not here

  296. talking about spiritual

  297. gifting in its entirety.

  298. What he's speaking to

  299. is the source

  300. of the blessing.

  301. It comes from God Himself.

  302. We are blessed spiritually

  303. because God is Spirit

  304. and has given us blessing.

  305. Not only that,

  306. but He's given us

  307. every spiritual blessing.

  308. We have all the power

  309. that we need

  310. to love as we should,

  311. to have peace and joy,

  312. to find contentment,

  313. to be obedient in all things,

  314. etc., etc., etc.

  315. And He has blessed us

  316. with every spiritual blessing

  317. in the heavenly places

  318. which refers to the domain

  319. of God.

  320. Not just future blessing,

  321. although future blessing

  322. is included in this,

  323. but present blessing now

  324. as those of us

  325. who have placed faith in Christ

  326. are part of God's kingdom.

  327. If you have believed in Christ,

  328. you are blessed in Christ

  329. with a new identity.

  330. A gospel identity.

  331. which I have summarized

  332. with a portion of today's

  333. summary statement,

  334. the middle portion of it,

  335. we are justified before God,

  336. forgiven,

  337. and adopted by Him.

  338. And I'll speak at length

  339. to the portion

  340. of the summary statement,

  341. but let's take the statement

  342. in its written order

  343. and ask the question first,

  344. what is the cause

  345. of our gospel identity?

  346. If you have placed faith

  347. in the personal work

  348. of Jesus Christ,

  349. you are justified before God,

  350. forgiven and adopted by Him,

  351. but what is the cause

  352. of this gospel identity?

  353. The first part of our statement,

  354. by grace alone,

  355. through faith alone,

  356. in the personal work

  357. of Jesus Christ alone.

  358. Beloved, we undoubtedly

  359. must believe in Christ.

  360. I like the clarification.

  361. You have heard me

  362. or you will hear me

  363. if you stick around,

  364. in the person and work

  365. of Jesus Christ.

  366. I think my head's tallied

  367. at least a dozen times.

  368. I've said it already

  369. this morning.

  370. In the person

  371. and the work,

  372. to believe that Jesus

  373. is who He said He was,

  374. that He is the Son of God,

  375. and that He lived

  376. a perfect life,

  377. that He died a sinner's death,

  378. that He was raised

  379. on the third day,

  380. that He's ascended

  381. and seated with the Father.

  382. We must believe these things.

  383. When we say we must believe

  384. in Christ,

  385. it means that we believe

  386. all of those things.

  387. It doesn't mean

  388. that we believe

  389. that Jesus was a good teacher,

  390. but that He was the Son of God.

  391. That we place our faith in Him

  392. for the remediation of our sin.

  393. Not just that we believe

  394. that He could be our buddy.

  395. There's specifics about

  396. what we must believe

  397. about Christ

  398. to be saved by Him.

  399. But undoubtedly,

  400. we must believe.

  401. Paul writes in Romans 10.9,

  402. if you confess with your mouth

  403. that Jesus is Lord

  404. and believe in your heart

  405. that God raised Him

  406. from the dead work,

  407. you will be saved.

  408. Our text this morning

  409. confirms this.

  410. You can look at verse 12

  411. and verse 13.

  412. I underline these

  413. with squiggly marks

  414. on my page.

  415. So that we who were the first

  416. to what?

  417. Hope in Christ.

  418. There's a work on our part.

  419. We hoped in Christ.

  420. In verse 13,

  421. in Him you also,

  422. when you heard the word of truth,

  423. the gospel of your salvation,

  424. and believed in Him.

  425. So something happens.

  426. Something takes place

  427. in our conversion.

  428. We place faith

  429. in the person and work

  430. of Jesus Christ.

  431. So you could say

  432. that our faith is the cause

  433. of our gospel identity.

  434. That would be accurate.

  435. Our faith is the cause

  436. of our gospel identity,

  437. but what is the cause

  438. of our faith?

  439. What made dead people

  440. who were bent against

  441. the worship of God

  442. suddenly decide

  443. to worship God?

  444. Our text this morning

  445. speaks to this.

  446. I don't intend at this moment

  447. to make a complex

  448. soteriological argument.

  449. If you don't know

  450. what soteriology is,

  451. that's probably okay.

  452. It's the study

  453. of the doctrines

  454. of salvation.

  455. I hope you're familiar

  456. with the doctrines

  457. of salvation though.

  458. I don't care to work out

  459. all the intricacies

  460. of such doctrines,

  461. precious though they are,

  462. but for the sake

  463. of your understanding

  464. of your gospel identity.

  465. If you've placed faith

  466. in Christ,

  467. person and work,

  468. you need to see

  469. that God is the cause

  470. of your faith.

  471. It's very important

  472. to see the way

  473. in which God brings

  474. things about faith

  475. in the life

  476. of a believer.

  477. I don't want

  478. to get into

  479. a debate about this.

  480. These doctrines

  481. are taught to you

  482. to give you

  483. a pillow

  484. to rest your head on

  485. and I want to show you

  486. why.

  487. Note with me

  488. some phrases

  489. and some verses

  490. in our text.

  491. I put these in parentheses

  492. if you're marking

  493. yours up.

  494. verse 4,

  495. He,

  496. being God,

  497. chose us

  498. in Him,

  499. being Jesus Christ,

  500. when?

  501. Before the foundation

  502. of the world.

  503. Don't make this

  504. too complex, beloved.

  505. Paul's not trying

  506. to pull some

  507. semantical tricks

  508. on us here.

  509. Read it as it reads.

  510. It's the doctrine

  511. of the clarity

  512. of Scripture.

  513. He chose us in Him

  514. before the foundation

  515. of the world.

  516. Before all of this

  517. came to be,

  518. before original sin,

  519. there was a plan

  520. in place.

  521. Christ was always

  522. plan A.

  523. Never a plan B.

  524. And God chose us

  525. in Christ

  526. before the foundation

  527. of the world.

  528. Very last part

  529. of verse 4

  530. and verse 5.

  531. I don't understand

  532. why the numbers

  533. fall this way.

  534. In love,

  535. He predestined

  536. us

  537. according

  538. to the purpose

  539. of His will.

  540. Again,

  541. according to His purpose

  542. in verse 9.

  543. Verse 11.

  544. Having been

  545. predestined

  546. according

  547. to the purpose

  548. of Him

  549. who works

  550. all things

  551. according

  552. to the counsel

  553. of His will.

  554. It's very difficult

  555. to get around this.

  556. And I know

  557. that for some of you,

  558. your brains

  559. are racing out

  560. implications.

  561. Stop.

  562. Calm down

  563. for a minute

  564. and look at

  565. what Paul's

  566. trying to

  567. communicate to us.

  568. He's simply

  569. trying to say

  570. that our faith

  571. was brought about

  572. by God.

  573. Why is that

  574. going to be important?

  575. I'll tell you

  576. momentarily.

  577. Don't get away

  578. from this.

  579. The word

  580. predestined

  581. is such a scary

  582. word this day.

  583. But I'll tell you

  584. what it means.

  585. In Greek,

  586. it means

  587. decided beforehand

  588. or predetermined.

  589. Paul's statement

  590. in verse 4

  591. so beautifully

  592. defines the word

  593. for us.

  594. Chose us in Him

  595. before the foundation

  596. of the world.

  597. Predetermined.

  598. Decided beforehand

  599. that we would

  600. believe in Christ.

  601. So what is the cause

  602. of our gospel identity?

  603. Ultimately,

  604. God.

  605. Specifically,

  606. God's grace to us.

  607. In His loving kindness,

  608. He brought about

  609. faith in us.

  610. If you look just

  611. a little further on

  612. in Ephesians 2,

  613. beginning in verse 8,

  614. Paul says,

  615. For by grace

  616. you have been saved

  617. through faith.

  618. And this is not

  619. your own doing.

  620. Paul's referring here

  621. to the faith,

  622. not to the grace.

  623. And this is not

  624. your own doing.

  625. It is the gift

  626. of God.

  627. Not a result

  628. of works.

  629. Why?

  630. So that no one

  631. may boast.

  632. Oh, proud me,

  633. I have faith.

  634. Oh, poor pitiful me,

  635. I would not have faith

  636. apart from Christ.

  637. Oh, Christ

  638. is to be praised.

  639. Why is this doctrine

  640. important to your

  641. understanding

  642. of your gospel identity?

  643. It's important

  644. because your identity

  645. is secure.

  646. It was wrought

  647. by God.

  648. He brought it about

  649. and He will not

  650. change His mind.

  651. God made you

  652. and He will keep you.

  653. Numbers 23, 19.

  654. God is not man

  655. that He should lie

  656. or of son of man

  657. that He should change

  658. His mind.

  659. Has He said

  660. and will He not do it?

  661. Or has He spoken

  662. and will He not

  663. fulfill it?

  664. Paul says in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:29

  665. verse 29 and 30,

  666. for those whom He foredo,

  667. He also predestined

  668. to be conformed

  669. to the image of a son

  670. in order that He might

  671. be the firstborn

  672. or preeminent

  673. among many brothers.

  674. And those whom He predestined,

  675. He also called.

  676. And those whom He called,

  677. He also justified.

  678. And those whom He justified,

  679. He also glorified.

  680. Future tense,

  681. one day we will be made

  682. entirely perfect

  683. and be in His presence

  684. forever.

  685. So who has brought about

  686. this gospel identity

  687. that we're speaking about today?

  688. It's God, beloved.

  689. You may not know this,

  690. but I call you beloved.

  691. I'm hoping that I'm referring

  692. to everyone in the room.

  693. When I say beloved,

  694. I'm referring to Christians.

  695. Jesus calls His own Son,

  696. God calls His own Son,

  697. Jesus, beloved.

  698. And that's a title

  699. passed on to us,

  700. loved in Christ.

  701. Adopted sons and daughters

  702. of the Most High.

  703. So what is our gospel identity?

  704. Again, here we are,

  705. middle of the phrase,

  706. we are justified before God,

  707. forgiven and adopted by Him.

  708. We are justified before God.

  709. To be justified before God

  710. means to be declared righteous

  711. before God as our judge.

  712. It's a courtroom term.

  713. Standing before a judge

  714. and the judge not only

  715. dismisses our offense,

  716. our sin has been forgiven,

  717. but also declares us perfect.

  718. There's two sides to justification.

  719. Right?

  720. Verse 4 says that we should be holy

  721. and blameless before Him.

  722. If you are in Christ,

  723. if you have believed in Him,

  724. you stand before God justified.

  725. And there's really not another great word

  726. for this word.

  727. Two sides of the coin.

  728. Debt canceled

  729. and a deposit has been made.

  730. Christ took your sin.

  731. The debt has been canceled.

  732. Christ gave you His righteousness.

  733. You're seen as perfect before God.

  734. We are justified, beloved.

  735. Important, important doctrine

  736. to understand who we are.

  737. We've been forgiven.

  738. Verse 7,

  739. in Him we have redemption

  740. through His blood,

  741. the forgiveness of our trespasses.

  742. We have been adopted.

  743. Verse 5,

  744. He predestined us for adoption

  745. as sons through Jesus Christ.

  746. And ladies,

  747. it's okay that Paul is using this terminology

  748. because culturally,

  749. you want to be a son.

  750. Sons got inheritance.

  751. Sons took over the Father's place.

  752. Women at this time

  753. had very little rights to inheritance.

  754. Very little.

  755. They needed to marry into family

  756. to have those things.

  757. So, to call you a son of God

  758. is not a gender offense

  759. in this way.

  760. We've been adopted as sons

  761. through Jesus Christ.

  762. And I fear in my own mind

  763. and sometimes then

  764. in your minds

  765. that here as we

  766. hold high God

  767. and we present Him

  768. as sovereign King,

  769. as ruler,

  770. as creator and sustainer,

  771. which He is,

  772. all of those things

  773. that we sometimes forget

  774. to call Him Father.

  775. And as we talk about Christ

  776. as the prophet,

  777. priest,

  778. and king,

  779. supreme in all things,

  780. we forget to call Him

  781. friend.

  782. Our relationship is

  783. deep and intimate

  784. with the Lord of the universe.

  785. And this is an astounding reality.

  786. J.I. Packer,

  787. in his work entitled

  788. Knowing God,

  789. which you should read,

  790. wrote the following,

  791. that justification

  792. by which we mean

  793. God's forgiveness

  794. of the past

  795. together with His acceptance

  796. for the future

  797. is the primary

  798. and fundamental blessing

  799. of the gospel

  800. is not in question.

  801. Justification

  802. is the primary blessing

  803. because it meets

  804. our primary spiritual need.

  805. We all stand by nature

  806. under God's judgment.

  807. His law condemns us.

  808. Guilt gnaws at us,

  809. making us restless,

  810. miserable,

  811. and in our lucid moments

  812. afraid.

  813. We have no peace

  814. in ourselves

  815. because we have no peace

  816. with our Maker.

  817. So we need the forgiveness

  818. of our sins

  819. and assurance

  820. of a restored relationship

  821. with God

  822. more than we need

  823. anything else

  824. in the world.

  825. And this,

  826. the gospel offers us

  827. before it offers us

  828. anything else.

  829. But contrast this now

  830. with adoption.

  831. Adoption is a family idea

  832. conceived in terms of love,

  833. and viewing God

  834. as Father.

  835. In adoption,

  836. God takes us

  837. into His family

  838. and fellowship.

  839. He establishes us

  840. as His children

  841. and heirs.

  842. Closeness,

  843. affection,

  844. and generosity

  845. are at the heart

  846. of the relationship.

  847. To be right with the God,

  848. the judge,

  849. is a great thing.

  850. But to be loved

  851. and cared for by God,

  852. the Father,

  853. is greater.

  854. this is who we are

  855. in Christ.

  856. Accepted by God

  857. and drawn into

  858. a familial relationship

  859. with Him.

  860. And beloved,

  861. this is based

  862. in His work

  863. before the foundation

  864. of the world

  865. that we might have faith

  866. and believe

  867. in the personal work

  868. of Jesus Christ.

  869. I hope that even

  870. if that's a strange doctrine

  871. to you,

  872. that you could see

  873. the beauty of it.

  874. I hope to say,

  875. I can rest in that.

  876. That in the midst

  877. of all of the best

  878. that I am,

  879. I am God's

  880. in Christ.

  881. That's our gospel identity.

  882. That's what He's done

  883. on our behalf.

  884. And it should rightly

  885. have some effect

  886. in our lives.

  887. If you are Christ's,

  888. you don't have the option

  889. from to be merely

  890. your Savior

  891. and not also

  892. your Lord.

  893. He said,

  894. those who love me

  895. keep my commandments.

  896. It becomes the natural

  897. response

  898. of the heart

  899. that's been turned

  900. to God in Christ

  901. to follow Him.

  902. To be His disciples.

  903. And far too long,

  904. we've had presented

  905. in America

  906. a complacent Christianity

  907. that says,

  908. it's just okay

  909. that you show up

  910. and you consume.

  911. We're just happy

  912. you're here.

  913. We're happy you're here

  914. because we want you

  915. to be engaged

  916. in obedience

  917. to Christ

  918. in the world.

  919. It's good for the world

  920. and it's good for you.

  921. How dare we not

  922. press obedience

  923. on the people of God?

  924. How dare we not

  925. show them

  926. the great joy

  927. that's found in Christ

  928. and obedience

  929. to Him?

  930. We won't be doing

  931. that here anymore.

  932. You're either

  933. going to get caught up

  934. in the mission of God

  935. because you're His

  936. or you're going to get

  937. really uncomfortable

  938. around here.

  939. What is

  940. the effect

  941. of our gospel

  942. identity?

  943. Last sentence

  944. of our summary statement.

  945. This gospel identity

  946. is our great motivation

  947. for worship.

  948. Because of what God

  949. has done for us

  950. in Christ,

  951. we worship Him.

  952. I am not simply

  953. referring to

  954. congregational singing.

  955. I appreciate it.

  956. It's been said a few times

  957. already this morning.

  958. It's a poor nomenclature

  959. that we call

  960. singing in church

  961. worship.

  962. It is worship,

  963. but it's not all

  964. that worship is.

  965. I think that some people

  966. begin to think

  967. that that's the extent

  968. of it all.

  969. It's a type of worship.

  970. Musical worship.

  971. But worship,

  972. beloved,

  973. is all that we do.

  974. It extends into

  975. every aspect

  976. of our lives.

  977. It is sharing

  978. the gospel.

  979. It is showing up

  980. on Sunday morning

  981. and singing songs.

  982. It is listening

  983. to sermons preached.

  984. It is preaching sermons.

  985. But it is also

  986. washing dishes

  987. and changing diapers

  988. and vacuuming floors.

  989. All of those things

  990. in life

  991. are done

  992. to the honor

  993. and glory

  994. of God.

  995. This is also

  996. worshipped.

  997. Your purpose

  998. as a justified,

  999. redeemed,

  1000. and adopted person

  1001. is to live

  1002. as a holy person

  1003. in all things

1004. to the praise of God.

  1005. God.

1006. I say to my sons,

  1007. those of you

  1008. who don't know me,

1009. I have three sons now.

  1010. I have a six-year-old,

  1011. a four-year-old,

  1012. and an almost

  1013. four-month-old.

1014. So to the older two,

  1015. I say,

  1016. boys,

  1017. my sons

  1018. obey their father.

  1019. Are you acting

  1020. like my sons

  1021. right now?

  1022. And they go,

1023. well, you are my sons,

  1024. aren't you?

  1025. My sons

  1026. obey their father.

  1027. And when they're

  1028. punished,

  1029. when I discipline them,

  1030. I get a spanking

  1031. and they're sent

  1032. off to their room

1033. to lay in their bed.

  1034. We reconcile afterward

  1035. and I always say,

  1036. you're my son

  1037. and I love you

  1038. and that's why

  1039. I want you to

  1040. obey.

  1041. Your father is good

1042. and he cares about you.

  1043. He is concerned.

1044. And let me tell you

  1045. that I fail

  1046. so often at this,

  1047. but God never fails

  1048. to give us good

  1049. and right

  1050. and proper commandment

  1051. for us

  1052. to live

  1053. and flourish

  1054. under his

  1055. rule.

  1056. You hear me say

  1057. to the kids

  1058. on Sunday mornings,

  1059. I love you,

  1060. which is why

1061. I want to remind you

  1062. that God loves you,

  1063. which is why

  1064. he gave you

  1065. parents that love you,

  1066. which is why

  1067. you should

  1068. obey them.

  1069. We glorify God

  1070. when we act

  1071. in appropriate response

  1072. to who we are

  1073. in Christ.

  1074. We bring him

  1075. great honor.

1076. Not that he needs it

  1077. bestowed upon him,

  1078. but we show him

1079. for who he actually is

  1080. when we live

  1081. in accordance

  1082. with what he's

  1083. done for us

  1084. in Christ.

  1085. Note this

  1086. in our text.

  1087. Ephesians 1,

    Ephesians 1:6

  1088. verse 6,

  1089. you'll see the phrase.

  1090. I did a big scribbly

  1091. circle around these

  1092. phrases.

  1093. To the praise

  1094. of his glorious grace.

  1095. Verse 12,

  1096. to the praise

  1097. of his glory.

  1098. Verse 14,

  1099. to the praise

  1100. of his glory.

  1101. There are two types

  1102. of magnification.

  1103. This is a classic

  1104. John Piper.

  1105. Type of magnification

  1106. that a microscope does

  1107. where it makes something

  1108. very, very tiny.

  1109. It looks bigger

  1110. than it is.

  1111. Many people think

1112. of glory in that way.

  1113. Glorifying God

  1114. in that way.

1115. This is not the case

  1116. at all.

  1117. The type of magnifying

  1118. we do

  1119. is making something

  1120. that's huge

  1121. and massive

  1122. and far off

  1123. and distant

  1124. look much more

  1125. like it actually is.

  1126. And in obedience

  1127. we do this.

  1128. We magnify God

  1129. in that way.

  1130. We show him

  1131. to be king

  1132. and ruler

  1133. in our hearts.

  1134. In Matthew 7,

    Matthew 7:17

  1135. verses 17 and 18,

  1136. Jesus says,

  1137. So,

  1138. every healthy tree

  1139. bears good fruit.

  1140. But the diseased tree

  1141. bears bad fruit.

1142. Good trees bear good fruit.

  1143. Bad trees bear

  1144. bad fruit.

  1145. Verse 18,

  1146. A healthy tree

  1147. cannot bear bad fruit

1148. nor can a diseased tree

  1149. bear good fruit.

  1150. We are changed

  1151. by God

  1152. from a bad tree

  1153. only producing evil

  1154. to a good tree.

  1155. This reality

  1156. is the doctrine

  1157. of regeneration.

1158. This is the new birth.

  1159. We're not the same

  1160. anymore.

  1161. We're made new.

  1162. We're not changed

  1163. in degree.

  1164. We don't encounter Christ

  1165. and we're made

  1166. a little better.

  1167. We're changed

  1168. in kind.

  1169. Subliminally,

  1170. !

  1171. Subtly,

  1172. maybe not so much.

1173. The church has a new logo.

  1174. The astute amongst you

  1175. have noticed this.

1176. We had a bunch of trees

  1177. before.

  1178. It's a single tree now.

  1179. Mostly Facebook

  1180. and Instagram

  1181. that's forcing everything

  1182. into circles and squares

  1183. is causing this.

  1184. But,

1185. when you see this logo,

1186. I want you to think

  1187. good tree.

  1188. Who am I

  1189. in Christ?

  1190. In Christ,

  1191. I'm a good tree.

1192. What do good trees do?

  1193. Good trees produce

  1194. good fruit.

1195. On the front of your bulletin,

  1196. you'll see a

  1197. Spurgeon

  1198. quote.

  1199. I do this

  1200. because I want to

  1201. connect you to history.

1202. I want to connect you

  1203. to the church

  1204. that existed before.

  1205. These are

  1206. blessed brothers.

1207. We stand on their shoulders.

1208. They have so much wisdom.

  1209. And Spurgeon says things

1210. so much better than I do.

  1211. He wrote,

  1212. God works in man

  1213. a change so great

  1214. that no reformation

  1215. can even so much

  1216. as thoroughly imitate it.

  1217. So,

1218. no change a man can do

  1219. can even imitate

  1220. the change that God

1221. brings about in a man.

1222. It is an entire change.

1223. A change of the will

  1224. of the being

  1225. of the desires

  1226. of the hates

  1227. of the disliking

  1228. and of the likings.

  1229. In every respect,

  1230. the man becomes new

  1231. when divine grace

  1232. enters into his heart.

  1233. Our gospel identity

  1234. produces obedience,

1235. but we do not become

  1236. perfectly obedient,

  1237. do we?

1238. Oh, I wish we did.

  1239. We do not become

  1240. perfectly obedient.

1241. And I think we can

  1242. muse about the why

  1243. of that at length.

1244. I think one of the

  1245. primary reasons for it

1246. is that we still have

  1247. our flesh

1248. and we carry that around.

1249. And I have to tell you

  1250. that for me,

  1251. I sympathize deeply

  1252. with lost people

  1253. because I see

  1254. the vileness

  1255. of my sin.

  1256. I step back

  1257. into my old self-functioning

  1258. and I remember

  1259. how miserable

  1260. I was before Christ.

  1261. My heart goes out

  1262. to people who don't

  1263. know him

  1264. because I still

  1265. need him.

  1266. There's a concept,

  1267. a biblical concept,

  1268. first systematized

  1269. by Augustine

  1270. called the fourfold

  1271. state of man.

  1272. I think we have a slide

  1273. for this.

1274. It was later made popular

  1275. in a book entitled

  1276. Human Nature

  1277. in Its Fourfold State

  1278. by a man named

  1279. Thomas Boston.

  1280. He was a 17th century

  1281. Scottish pastor

  1282. and theologian.

1283. So this is a biblical concept.

1284. It's taught in the scriptures.

1285. I'm going to show it

  1286. to you in Latin.

  1287. And not again,

  1288. I'm not doing this.

  1289. I don't quote people

  1290. and do this

  1291. because I want you

1292. to think that I'm smart

  1293. because I'm not.

  1294. I steal everything

1295. that I present to you.

  1296. There's nothing new

  1297. under the sun.

  1298. I'm just a mockingbird.

  1299. For me,

  1300. Latin helps me

  1301. remember things.

1302. And that may not be

  1303. the case for you,

  1304. but getting phrases

1305. in my mind in Latin

  1306. helps me remember things.

1307. But in addition to that,

1308. I want you to be comfortable

1309. in some respect with Latin

  1310. because if you read

1311. the guys you should be reading,

  1312. the old dead guys,

1313. they do this a lot.

1314. They just throw Latin phrases

1315. into the mix of things.

1316. And you need to know

  1317. that it's Latin

1318. and you need to try

  1319. to start figuring out

  1320. what these things mean.

  1321. With no explanation,

  1322. they'll just use a Latin phrase

  1323. and keep on going.

1324. So I want you to get

  1325. comfortable around Latin.

1326. So you're going to see it

  1327. a bit more

  1328. in our meetings together.

1329. But the fourfold state of man

  1330. is a biblical concept,

  1331. systematic theology here

  1332. being brought together.

  1333. The very first state

1334. is the state of innocence.

1335. This is the pre-fall state.

1336. Only two people ever lived

  1337. in the pre-fall state,

  1338. the state of innocence,

  1339. Adam and Eve.

  1340. Adam and Eve.

  1341. And in that state,

  1342. they had

  1343. passe non pecare,

  1344. et passe pecare.

  1345. Right?

  1346. The power

  1347. not to sin,

  1348. passe non pecare,

  1349. and

1350. et the power to sin,

  1351. passe pecare.

  1352. They had both.

  1353. They could do either.

1354. And we see that picture.

  1355. Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  1356. into the beginning

  1357. of Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

1358. They commanded not to eat

  1359. of a tree.

1360. And what did they do?

1361. They eat of the tree.

1362. They didn't have to eat of the tree.

  1363. They had the power

  1364. to do either.

  1365. Passe non pecare,

  1366. et passe pecare.

  1367. And they immediately,

1368. and all that have followed them

  1369. at birth,

  1370. enter into

  1371. what's secondly called

  1372. the state of nature.

  1373. The state of nature.

  1374. The post-fall,

  1375. pre-conversion state.

1376. If you are not in Christ

  1377. this morning,

  1378. if you know people

1379. who are not in Christ,

1380. this is where they function.

  1381. And in this state,

  1382. people only have

  1383. the power

  1384. to sin.

  1385. Passe pecare.

1386. Even things that we would deem

  1387. as good activity

  1388. are not rightly motivated

  1389. by faith

1390. through the glory of God

  1391. and therefore

  1392. they're sin.

  1393. Passe pecare.

  1394. Thirdly,

1395. you have the state of grace.

  1396. The converted state.

  1397. If you're in Christ,

1398. this is where we find ourselves.

  1399. Gospel identity

1400. is what we're talking about.

1401. So this is where we land

  1402. in the third state,

  1403. the state of grace.

  1404. And we once again

  1405. return to

  1406. the nature

1407. of the state of innocence.

  1408. Passe non pecare

  1409. et passe pecare.

  1410. We have the power

  1411. not to sin.

  1412. Praise God

1413. by the work of the Spirit.

  1414. We're made new.

  1415. We have the power

  1416. not to sin.

  1417. And

  1418. we have the power

  1419. to sin.

  1420. We still choose

  1421. to be disobedient.

  1422. And then fourthly,

  1423. and praise God

  1424. for the fourth,

  1425. the eternal state,

  1426. the glorified state,

  1427. when we will

  1428. only have power

  1429. not to sin.

  1430. Passe non pecare.

1431. We long for that day.

  1432. Passe non pecare

  1433. is the truth.

  1434. So,

  1435. we find that living

  1436. as a holy person

1437. for the praise of God

1438. in the state of grace

  1439. takes effort.

  1440. Our salvation is monergistic.

  1441. It's a work of God.

  1442. God works.

  1443. We're saved.

  1444. Our sanctification,

  1445. the process of becoming

  1446. like Christ,

  1447. is a synergistic process.

  1448. We work

  1449. and God works.

1450. Wonderful proof text for this

  1451. is Philippians 2,

  1452. 12 and 13.

  1453. Paul writes,

  1454. Therefore, my beloved,

1455. as you have always obeyed,

  1456. so now,

1457. not only as in my presence,

1458. but much more in my absence,

1459. work out your own salvation

  1460. with fear and trembling.

  1461. Verse 13,

  1462. for

  1463. this is the reason

1464. for the fear and trembling,

  1465. for

1466. it is God who works in you

  1467. both to will

  1468. and to work

  1469. for His good pleasure.

  1470. So,

  1471. you work,

  1472. God

  1473. works.

  1474. And too often, beloved,

  1475. those who

  1476. hold dear

  1477. the sovereignty of God,

  1478. those who understand

  1479. our need

  1480. of grace

  1481. become complacent

  1482. and lazy

  1483. as if we're waiting

  1484. to be compelled

  1485. to obedience,

  1486. animated,

  1487. I should even say

  1488. to obedience.

  1489. I hear so much

  1490. from you.

1491. This is what I want to do.

1492. I really desire to do.

1493. But then you don't do it.

1494. If the desire is genuine,

  1495. you will go.

1496. You will do the thing

  1497. that you said

  1498. you would do.

  1499. I think sometimes

1500. you desire me to think

1501. that you desire to do

1502. the things you're supposed to do.

  1503. we will be obedient

  1504. and it takes effort

  1505. on our part.

  1506. It takes work

  1507. on our part.

  1508. Our sanctification,

  1509. biblically,

  1510. biblical sanctification

  1511. is progressive.

  1512. We've got a slide

1513. for this one as well.

1514. You've heard me say this before.

1515. You can see it in picture now

  1516. because it's

  1517. going to astound you.

  1518. I know, right?

  1519. Yay for visuals.

1520. You need to see, right?

  1521. Moving towards holiness, right?

  1522. Away from unrighteousness,

  1523. towards righteousness.

  1524. Looking more like Christ.

  1525. Across time,

  1526. we progress.

  1527. We still sin, right?

  1528. There's downward spikes

  1529. in this.

  1530. But we keep working

  1531. our way upward

1532. by the grace of God

  1533. toward Christ's likeness.

  1534. longing one day

  1535. for glorification

  1536. where we will be

  1537. made perfect,

  1538. complete.

1539. That process will be over.

  1540. Progressive sanctification.

1541. And there are a lot

  1542. of erroneous views

  1543. on sanctification.

  1544. I don't have time

  1545. for it today,

  1546. but there are popular

  1547. erroneous views.

  1548. Methodism

  1549. is a dangerous one.

  1550. If you grew up

  1551. a Methodist,

1552. you may not even think

  1553. this way.

  1554. You may think

  1555. the proper biblical way

  1556. about sanctification,

  1557. but many Methodists

  1558. have a skewed version.

  1559. Wesleyan sanctification

  1560. is not biblical sanctification.

  1561. Tezik sanctification

  1562. is another one

1563. you need to watch out for.

  1564. And both of them

  1565. suggest that we have

  1566. spikes in our life

  1567. where we suddenly

  1568. become holy.

  1569. And then we live

  1570. that existence out.

  1571. I've never talked

  1572. to a Methodist,

  1573. for example,

  1574. that's ever said that

  1575. to me

  1576. and ever seemed

  1577. to believe that.

  1578. I've heard a tale

  1579. of some older Methodists

  1580. that have claimed

  1581. to be perfect

  1582. for decades.

  1583. They've reached

  1584. that point.

  1585. that point of perfection

  1586. and they've moved on

  1587. from there.

  1588. All the offense

  1589. to the Gospel

  1590. that that is.

  1591. Sanctification is

  1592. progressive

  1593. and it's synergistic.

  1594. And we're going

  1595. to begin talking

  1596. as a church

  1597. about four areas

  1598. of sanctification.

  1599. Four areas

  1600. of good fruit bearing

  1601. if you prefer.

  1602. Four areas

  1603. of Christian living.

  1604. and we're going

  1605. to talk about those

1606. in the next four weeks.

1607. I want it to be a thing

  1608. that you're talking

  1609. about together.

  1610. You can structure

  1611. all of your Christian

  1612. meetings around

  1613. these things

  1614. to be sure

  1615. that this activity

  1616. is happening

  1617. in one another's lives.

  1618. These things

  1619. are disciplines

  1620. of grace to us.

  1621. They're things

  1622. we must work at

  1623. and lean into.

  1624. They're places

  1625. that we experience Christ.

  1626. We're so motivated

  1627. and our joy

1628. when we get to be

  1629. caught up

  1630. in His work

  1631. in the world.

  1632. They matter.

  1633. And there's different

  1634. ways to structure this

  1635. but we're going to

  1636. structure it

  1637. in the following way.

  1638. Number one,

  1639. conviction.

1640. Those of you who are

  1641. members and got

  1642. the member health survey,

  1643. this has been subtly

  1644. getting interjected as well.

  1645. We asked you questions

  1646. based on these four

  1647. different areas

  1648. and we'll be talking

1649. about some of the results

  1650. of that survey

  1651. in the coming weeks.

  1652. Conviction.

  1653. What do we believe

  1654. to be true

  1655. about God,

  1656. about ourselves,

  1657. about Christ?

1658. How well do we know

  1659. the scripture

  1660. and how does that

  1661. turn us to prayer?

  1662. My suggestion is

  1663. that if we have

  1664. proper convictions

1665. we will pray a lot

  1666. and we'll pray properly.

  1667. So conviction.

  1668. Second,

  1669. community.

  1670. We've been given

  1671. to a community.

  1672. We've been saved

  1673. certainly as individuals

  1674. but we've been saved

  1675. as a people.

  1676. Community is a grace

  1677. to us.

  1678. Young people,

  1679. college students,

  1680. freshmen up here

  1681. don't neglect this grace.

  1682. Too many college students

  1683. have gone asunder

  1684. as a result.

  1685. A thirdly,

  1686. character.

  1687. Who are we supposed

1688. to be both in private

  1689. and in public

  1690. as a result?

  1691. What are the things

  1692. that characterize

  1693. the Christian?

  1694. And fourthly,

  1695. commission.

  1696. We cannot say

  1697. that we're disciples

  1698. of Jesus Christ

  1699. if we're not on

  1700. the mission of Christ,

  1701. the redemption

  1702. of His people

  1703. in the world.

  1704. And so we're going

  1705. to be pressing

  1706. at these things.

  1707. We're going to be

  1708. ramping up the expectations

  1709. on members

  1710. and just kind of

  1711. trying to draw

  1712. those of you

  1713. who aren't members

  1714. into what we're doing.

  1715. And we'll be talking

  1716. about these things

  1717. at length

  1718. in these four areas.

  1719. I really hope

  1720. in a year

  1721. you are just

  1722. sick and tired

  1723. of hearing about

  1724. the four C's

  1725. but that it's changed

  1726. the way you live

  1727. by grace.

  1728. What is happening

  1729. when we sin

  1730. is a failure

  1731. to remember

  1732. who we are?

  1733. Beloved,

  1734. it always goes

  1735. back to identity.

  1736. You have failed

  1737. to believe

  1738. in the moment

  1739. that you sin

  1740. the wondrous truth

  1741. of the Gospel.

  1742. You have forgotten

  1743. who you are.

  1744. My sons forget

  1745. that they're my sons

  1746. when they're disobedient.

  1747. The Gospel-centered Christian,

  1748. the person who's

  1749. recognizing

1750. who they are in Christ,

  1751. is humble

  1752. before God.

  1753. I am failing you

1754. if you leave this place

  1755. feeling good about yourself.

  1756. I don't want you

1757. to feel good about yourself

  1758. but I want you

1759. to feel good about Christ

1760. and then who you are in Him.

1761. Don't walk out of here

1762. with your head hung low

  1763. but recognize

  1764. who you once were

1765. and who you still tend to be

  1766. and praise God

1767. for what He's done for you

  1768. in Christ.

  1769. The Gospel-centered Christian

  1770. is humble before God,

  1771. recognize that they

1772. could do no good thing

  1773. to gain God's favor,

  1774. is motivated

  1775. by their Gospel identity

  1776. to obedience.

  1777. In their failures,

  1778. they repent quickly,

  1779. confess to the Lord

1780. and get back into the race,

1781. straining for what lies ahead.

  1782. The Gospel-centered Christian

1783. boasts only in the cross

  1784. of Jesus Christ.

  1785. Paul says,

  1786. Galatians 6.14,

1787. but far be it from me

1788. to boast except in the cross

1789. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1790. by which the world

1791. has been crucified to me

1792. and I to the world.

  1793. Gospel-centered Christianity,

  1794. right?

  1795. Recognizing our identity

1796. and working as a result

  1797. out of that.

1798. And as so many Christian doctrines

  1799. are this way,

  1800. there's a tight rope

  1801. to walk on

1802. and we try to get

  1803. right down the middle,

  1804. but there's always

1805. two ways to fall off.

1806. And I want to just expose you

  1807. to those two ways

1808. and I want to ask you

  1809. to consider

1810. if you fall into these,

1811. which one you fall into.

  1812. You do at times.

  1813. I'm assured.

  1814. The first

  1815. is the self-loving Christian.

  1816. Self-loving Christians.

  1817. Self-loving Christians

  1818. find themselves justified

  1819. by their obedience.

  1820. Find themselves justified

  1821. by works.

  1822. They're self-righteous.

  1823. They're always good enough.

  1824. They view God

  1825. as loving them

  1826. just as they are.

  1827. They view God

  1828. as properly loving them

  1829. as if He's saying,

  1830. why wouldn't I love you?

  1831. You're doing so good.

  1832. These people always have

  1833. an outward trapping

1834. of having it put together.

  1835. Never question

  1836. their own motivations

  1837. for why they do

1838. the things that they do.

1839. They believe that they deserve

  1840. God's grace,

  1841. which is an oxymoron.

  1842. The other side

  1843. of that tightrope

  1844. to fall off of

1845. and just knowing our church

  1846. most of us

  1847. find ourselves here

  1848. is the self-hating Christian.

  1849. Self-hating Christian

  1850. knows that they will

  1851. never be justified

  1852. by their obedience.

  1853. So,

1854. they try to be justified

  1855. by their penance.

1856. They know they can't ever

  1857. do enough work.

1858. They get that doctrine right.

  1859. But rather than placing

  1860. their identity in Christ

  1861. and His righteousness,

  1862. they seek to

  1863. beat themselves up

  1864. over their sin.

  1865. not true repentance,

  1866. but just penance.

  1867. Walking around

1868. with a head hung low,

  1869. not remembering

  1870. that they've been

  1871. forgiven and adopted.

  1872. They stand before God

  1873. justified in Christ.

  1874. Self-hating Christians

  1875. are never good enough.

  1876. They view God

  1877. as unable

  1878. to love someone

  1879. as wretched

  1880. as them.

  1881. There's two ways

  1882. to fall off

  1883. rather than coming

  1884. back to the center

  1885. saying that we're

1886. to be humble before Him.

  1887. No good

  1888. in and of myself.

  1889. Nothing I could do

  1890. to earn God's favor,

1891. but praise be to God

  1892. that in Christ

  1893. He has loved me.

  1894. He has justified me.

  1895. He has forgiven me.

  1896. He has adopted me.

  1897. I am His.

  1898. This is His work.

  1899. And I fail

  1900. to live for Him

  1901. as I ought,

  1902. but praise the Lord,

1903. my sins were wiped away

  1904. the cross of Calvary.

  1905. What a motivation

  1906. to act

  1907. and to move

1908. and to want to honor Him

1909. with the way that I live.

  1910. Confession

  1911. for the gospel-centered

  1912. Christian

  1913. goes quickly.

  1914. We repent,

  1915. we turn from sin,

  1916. and we move.

  1917. Oh, again.

  1918. Oh, this thing

  1919. that keeps coming up

  1920. in my heart.

1921. This thing that doesn't belong

1922. is not as it ought to be.

  1923. Lord, I confess,

1924. this is an offense to You.

  1925. I know that,

  1926. and I hate it.

1927. Help me to put it to death.

1928. Help me to live righteously

  1929. for You,

  1930. and then we go.

  1931. We act.

  1932. We do.

  1933. We're obedient.

  1934. So it comes back

  1935. to how we walk,

  1936. what we understand,

  1937. by grace alone

  1938. through faith alone.

1939. In the person and work

  1940. of Jesus Christ alone,

  1941. we are justified

  1942. before God.

  1943. Forgiven

  1944. and adopted by Him.

  1945. This gospel identity

  1946. is our great motivation

  1947. for worship,

  1948. and I look forward

  1949. to bringing out

  1950. the implications

  1951. of the way

  1952. that carries out

  1953. in our lives

1954. over the next four weeks.

  1955. Let's pray together.
