    1 John 3 chapter mention

  2. 1 John chapter 3.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  3. Before we settle into it, I want to share with you this morning an emotion that I'm feeling.

  4. And I feel a mix of emotions on every Sunday morning.

  5. There's always an excitement.

  6. We've been preparing for six days and it's here and God's people are together and I'm

  7. expecting that God will work.

  8. I feel the emotion of just sheer exhaustion because of the six days leading up to and

  9. it's here and suddenly the service is rushed along to this point.

  10. I always feel a manner of timidity, a weightiness to coming and opening up God's Word and doing

  11. by grace my very best to teach it to you with accuracy.

  12. This morning, I'm also angry.

  13. And I believe that my anger is a righteous anger, which is a rarity for me.

  14. Very few times I could say that that would be the case, but I believe that it is a righteous

  15. anger and it's not an anger aimed at you.

  16. It is an anger aimed at a local prominent pastor that I often speak of in a great deal of ambiguity.

  17. I speak in generalizations, hoping for your sake that you'll hear the truth and you'll be

  18. discerning as you hear things coming from this particular pastor.

  19. I believe that this pastor is a brother.

  20. I think he's in the faith.

  21. Therefore, I love him.

  22. He's part of our family.

  23. I am concerned for him.

  24. I am praying for him.

  25. I hope you'll do the same.

  26. But this morning, I'm angry at him.

  27. I think he's crossed a line.

  28. And as such, I think it's appropriate to begin to call him by name.

  29. You need to be aware of what's in our backyard.

  30. Some of you may have come out of the ministry of this particular pastor.

  31. And I don't mean any offense to you in the process of speaking about him.

  32. Most of us, I would presume, know people who are currently part of the ministry of this pastor.

  33. I know many people who are many phone calls I need to make in the coming weeks as a result of what's happening in the life of this ministry.

  34. The pastor I'm speaking of is Andy Stanley.

  35. And the ministry I'm speaking of is North Point Ministries.

  36. Six churches, I think.

  37. Massive mega church in our backyard.

  38. The reason I think it's important to call it by name and to talk about it is because I love you.

  39. And I love the people under his leadership.

  40. And I think it would be irresponsible to not talk about it by name.

  41. Now, most of you who have been around for a while know that I'm not a big fan of their ministry model.

  42. The idea of attractional church and building the church for the lost.

  43. I believe that the Bible teaches us that the church gathering is primarily for the believer.

  44. Certainly, we want to minister to the lost as they come in amongst us.

  45. But it's primarily for the believer to be equipped in order to go and to serve the lost.

  46. We are gathered to go.

  47. This is not the way they've arranged themselves.

  48. Not a fan of the ministry model.

  49. But I wouldn't want to harp on them by name for that reason.

  50. In practice, they have functionally denied the sufficiency of Scripture.

  51. But now, Andy Stanley is drawing into question the inerrancy and quite possibly the inspiration of Scripture.

  52. In an interview with Russell Moore, who's the president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention,

  53. Russell asked him a very strange question, but asked him,

  54. If he were the Pope of Evangelicalism, what would he do?

  55. What would he change?

  56. The first thing that crossed my mind was that first I'd do away with having a Pope of Evangelicalism.

  57. Not what he said.

  58. But he said instead,

  59. I would ask that pastors get the spotlight off the Bible and back on the resurrection of Jesus.

  60. A couple of weeks later, in a sermon entitled,

  61. The Bible Told Me So,

  62. he addresses what he calls deconversion.

  63. And just the idea of deconversion,

  64. that someone could have been converted at one point,

  65. regenerated,

  66. and then deregenerated,

  67. is in and of itself a dangerous idea,

  68. an entirely unbiblical idea.

  69. But I think he's referring to those who grow up in the church and then leave the church.

  70. There are dramatic statistics,

  71. particularly about college students,

  72. as high as 85% of college students who profess faith in Jesus Christ through high school,

  73. when they leave and go in their freshman year,

  74. 85% no longer claim to follow Christ.

  75. I think that's what he means by deconversion,

  76. but it's certainly a scary way to talk about it.

  77. He says that it's not ample to say,

  78. Jesus loves me,

  79. this I know,

  80. for the Bible tells me so.

  81. And he apologizes to people who were sent to college with a frail,

  82. I quote,

  83. frail version of our faith.

  84. He says,

  85. if the Bible is the foundation of our faith,

  86. as the Bible goes,

  87. so goes our faith.

  88. And then he gives examples that he states as fact of scientific evidence that contradicts the Scripture.

  89. Things like,

  90. there is no scientific evidence for a worldwide flood.

  91. Or,

  92. what if the ruins of Jericho are excavated and we never see evidence that the walls fell down?

  93. This is called evidential apologetics,

  94. and I would suggest to you that it's not the way that we approach the Bible.

  95. If the Bible is the foundation of our faith,

  96. as the Bible goes,

  97. so goes our faith.

  98. He questions the infallibility,

  99. and therefore,

  100. the very inspiration of the Scriptures.

  101. If God is true,

  102. and if God wrote the Bible,

  103. then the Bible is true.

  104. And I would suggest to you that it is the foundation of our faith,

  105. that faith comes from hearing,

  106. and hearing from the Word of God.

  107. He says that in the first century,

  108. believers didn't copy down the Scripture because they believed that it was inspired,

  109. but because they believed that it was true,

  110. that they took it simply as historical record,

  111. and they knew that the apostles penned it,

  112. so they took it as simply a true historical account,

  113. and it had not yet been canonized,

  114. and so they didn't believe that it was a Word from God,

  115. but just simply an account of Jesus and His resurrection.

  116. He concludes to say,

  117. we should rather think,

  118. Jesus loves me,

  119. this I know because Matthew,

  120. Mark,

  121. Luke,

  122. and John

  123. tells me so.

  124. which seems like circular logic to me.

  125. But I believe what he's saying is that

  126. let's not be too concerned about whether or not the Bible is inspired.

  127. Let's not be too concerned if it's actually the Word of God,

  128. if it actually has authority,

  129. but rather,

  130. let's look at what men who knew Jesus had to say,

  131. which is part of what we do

  132. as we look at the Scripture.

  133. But he neglects altogether

  134. that one of the apostles saw

  135. what we now see as our canon as Scripture.

  136. 2 Peter 3,

    2 Peter 3:15

  137. verses 15 and 16,

  138. Peter writes,

  139. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation,

  140. just as our beloved brother Paul

  141. also wrote to you

  142. according to the wisdom given him,

  143. as he does in all his letters

  144. when he speaks in them of these matters.

  145. So Paul,

  146. in all of his letters,

  147. speaks with wisdom

  148. about the patience of God toward us

  149. and the salvation that's found in Christ.

  150. That's me reversing the logic of Peter's writing.

  151. Then he says,

  152. verse 16,

  153. of all Paul's letters,

  154. there are some things in them

  155. that are hard to understand,

  156. which the ignorant

  157. and unstable

  158. twist to their own destruction

  159. as they do,

  160. if you're looking at it,

  161. the other Scriptures.

  162. So apparently the early church,

  163. at very least,

  164. Peter was already viewing

  165. the writing of Paul as Scripture,

  166. understood it to be inspired,

  167. as Paul says,

  168. breathed out by God.

  169. I apologize

  170. if you were sent to college

  171. without an unshakable confidence

  172. in the inspiration

  173. and therefore the infallibility

  174. and authority of our Bible,

  175. which is indeed the foundation

  176. of our faith.

  177. it's my hope,

  178. if you're a college student here

  179. and you have any misgiving

  180. about the value of it,

  181. I'm going to assume that

  182. because you're here,

  183. you probably don't,

  184. but if you do,

  185. that we so show you Christ

  186. in the Scripture

  187. that it becomes extremely

  188. precious to you,

  189. that you would be a person

  190. of the Word,

  191. that you would put theology

  192. above all of your other studies

  193. and would have a confidence

  194. in who Christ is

  195. because God has spoken to us

  196. about Him

  197. by His Word.

  198. Romans 10, 17 again,

  199. so faith comes from hearing

  200. and hearing

  201. through the Word of Christ.

  202. Ephesians 2, verse 13,

    Ephesians 2:13

  203. Paul says,

  204. but now in Christ Jesus,

  205. you who were once far off

  206. have been brought near

  207. by the blood of Christ.

  208. And then he goes down

  209. into verse 19 and 20,

  210. so then you were no longer

  211. strangers and aliens,

  212. but you are fellow citizens

  213. with the saints

  214. and members of the household of God

  215. built on the foundation,

  216. hang on for it,

  217. built on the foundation

  218. of the apostles and prophets.

  219. He is talking about

  220. the revelation of God

  221. through the apostles

  222. and the prophets.

  223. Christ Jesus Himself

  224. being the cornerstone.

  225. Many attractional churches

  226. teach a neutered gospel.

  227. Many preachers these days

  228. teach a subversive prosperity gospel.

  229. Jesus died on a cross

  230. that you might glory in Him

  231. and He in you forever.

  232. Not so that you can pick up

  233. weekly life lessons

  234. to live a more fulfilled life now.

  235. That is not what the Christian faith

  236. is about.

  237. Not about andeisms.

  238. It's about God revealed

  239. in the scripture.

  240. There is no crown without the cross.

  241. There is no glory without suffering.

  242. You cannot follow Christ

  243. without giving Him your all.

  244. He expects nothing less.

  245. He expects nothing less.

  246. With all that in mind,

  247. we ask that you pray for Andy Stanley.

  248. Join me in that.

  249. Pray for those under his leadership.

  250. Pray for those across this nation

  251. that look to Him for their cues

  252. on how they ought to lead successful ministry.

  253. I don't doubt his motivation

  254. in what he's trying to do.

  255. I believe he's a Christian.

  256. I believe he desperately wants people

  257. to come to faith in Christ,

  258. but he's doing it wrongly.

  259. Preach the truth

  260. to your friends

  261. and your family.

  262. Pray that he would come

  263. to an understanding of the truth,

  264. what an influence he could have

  265. if he would open the scripture

  266. to his people.

  267. And with all that,

  268. I'll remind you that, beloved,

  269. this is God's word to us.

  270. It was written for His glory

  271. and our good.

  272. We would all do well

  273. to listen to it

  274. in order to believe its promises

  275. and obey its commands.

  276. 1 John 3,

    1 John 3:1–10

  277. verses 1-10

  278. is our text for today.

  279. See what kind of love

  280. the Father has given to us

  281. that we should be called

  282. children of God.

  283. And so we are.

  284. The reason why the world

  285. does not know us

  286. is that it did not know Him.

  287. Beloved,

  288. we are God's children now.

  289. And what will be

  290. has not yet appeared,

  291. but we know

  292. that when He appears,

  293. we shall be like Him

  294. because we shall see Him

  295. as He is.

  296. And everyone who thus hopes in Him

  297. purifies himself

  298. as He is pure.

  299. Everyone who makes

  300. a practice of sinning

  301. also practices lawlessness.

  302. Sin is lawlessness.

  303. You know that He appeared

  304. in order to take away sins,

  305. and in Him

  306. there is no sin.

  307. No one who abides in Him

  308. keeps on sinning.

  309. No one who keeps on sinning

  310. has either seen Him

  311. or known Him.

  312. Little children,

  313. let no one deceive you.

  314. Whoever practices righteousness

  315. is righteous

  316. as He is righteous.

  317. Whoever makes a practice

  318. of sinning

  319. is of the devil,

  320. for the devil has been sinning

  321. from the beginning.

  322. The reason the Son of God

  323. appeared

  324. was to destroy

  325. the works of the devil.

  326. No one born of God

  327. makes a practice of sinning,

  328. for God's seed

  329. abides in Him,

  330. and He cannot keep on sinning

  331. because He has been born

  332. of God.

  333. By this it is evident,

  334. who are the children of God

  335. and who are the children

  336. of the devil?

  337. Whoever does not practice

  338. righteousness

  339. is not of God,

  340. nor is the one

  341. who does not love

  342. his brother.

  343. Now, over the past three weeks,

  344. we've been considering

  345. the Christian life,

  346. and we've been framing it up

  347. beginning with

  348. our gospel identity,

  349. and you're seeing that

  350. as the new logo

  351. for our church,

  352. the single tree

  353. in a circle.

  354. And the summary statement

  355. that we've been using

  356. for gospel identity

  357. is simply this,

  358. by grace alone

  359. through faith alone,

  360. and the personal work

  361. of Jesus Christ alone,

  362. we are justified before God,

  363. forgiven and adopted by Him.

  364. So that's who we are

  365. in Christ.

  366. And then we said

  367. this gospel identity

  368. is our great motivation

  369. for worship.

  370. So we're accepted by God

  371. in Christ,

  372. so we live how He wants us to

  373. in all things.

  374. This is worship.

  375. Have experienced the mercies

  376. of God to us

  377. in Christ.

  378. We live for Him,

  379. and we're using

  380. the biblical metaphor.

  381. Being good trees,

  382. we bear good fruit.

  383. And I've been suggesting

  384. to you all along the way

  385. that the bearing

  386. of good fruit

  387. requires activity

  388. on our part.

  389. It requires effort

  390. on our part.

  391. And so we're talking

  392. about four areas

  393. of Christian living,

  394. and they are as follows.

  395. First,

  396. our gospel conviction.

  397. Right?

  398. Knowing God

  399. through His word

  400. and prayer.

  401. Two weeks ago,

  402. we talked about that.

  403. Last week,

  404. we talked about gospel community.

  405. Loving the church

  406. in varying means

  407. of fellowship

  408. and service.

  409. This week,

  410. we'll talk about

  411. gospel character.

  412. And then finally,

  413. next week,

  414. gospel commission.

  415. And Lord willing,

  416. we'll be back

  417. in our verse-by-verse

  418. exposition of Acts

  419. following that.

  420. The summary statement

  421. for this morning is

  422. being justified

  423. before God,

  424. forgiven and adopted

  425. by Him.

  426. We worship Him

  427. through gospel character,

  428. conforming to Christ

  429. both in private

  430. and in public.

  431. Now,

  432. John starts out

  433. chapter 3

  434. making the point

  435. we've been making

  436. all along

  437. that who we are

  438. is a work of God.

  439. God has established it.

  440. So being justified

  441. before God,

  442. we're forgiven

  443. and adopted

  444. by Him.

  445. And you can see that

  446. running through

  447. the first three verses

  448. of 1 John chapter 3.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  449. But draw your attention

  450. specifically to

  451. verse 3.

  452. Everyone who thus

  453. hopes in Him.

  454. And he's referring back

  455. to what he has said

  456. that as God's children,

  457. we do not yet look

  458. like Christ

  459. being perfect,

  460. but we will one day

  461. look like Christ

  462. because we shall see Him

  463. as He is.

  464. When He returns,

  465. we'll be glorified

  466. and perfected

  467. at that time.

  468. But,

  469. he says in verse 3,

  470. and everyone

  471. who thus hopes

  472. in Him,

  473. so in the future

  474. perfection,

  475. which we call

  476. glorification,

  477. purifies himself

  478. as He,

  479. Christ,

  480. is pure.

  481. So by faith

  482. that we're justified

  483. before God

  484. and the debt

  485. of our sin

  486. is canceled

  487. before Him.

  488. And we are granted

  489. the righteousness

  490. of Christ.

  491. We are both forgiven

  492. and adopted.

  493. Paul writes in Romans 8.1,

  494. there is therefore

  495. now no condemnation

  496. for those

  497. who are in

  498. Christ

  499. Jesus.

  500. So,

  501. because we're

  502. beloved,

  503. because we're

  504. children of God,

  505. we're going to live

  506. a certain way.

  507. So don't mistake me

  508. saying that we live

  509. a certain way

  510. and therefore

  511. we're children of God.

  512. We're children of God,

  513. therefore,

  514. we live a certain way.

  515. We give evidence

  516. to who we are

  517. by the way

  518. we live.

  519. And John goes on

  520. to say this

  521. in no uncertain terms.

  522. I hope that it was

  523. a little scathing

  524. for you, right,

  525. to read

  526. from the authoritative

  527. Word

  528. of God.

  529. How it is

  530. that the person

  531. who claims

  532. to be a follower

  533. of Christ

  534. looks.

  535. Verse 4

  536. and down through

  537. verse 10.

  538. If we are

  539. justified before God,

  540. forgiven and adopted

  541. by Him,

  542. we worship Him

  543. through our

  544. character.

  545. We are being

  546. conformed

  547. to Christ.

  548. We have not

  549. arrived there yet

  550. perfectly,

  551. which I will

  552. show you in a moment,

  553. but we are

  554. pressing on

  555. in holiness

  556. toward

  557. Christ's

  558. likeness.

  559. If you are

  560. of God,

  561. it's the point

  562. that John is making,

  563. you will

  564. not

  565. make a

  566. practice

  567. of sinning.

  568. If you are

  569. a child

  570. of God,

  571. you will

  572. practice

  573. righteousness.

  574. You will be

  575. on

  576. God's

  577. highway.

  578. The Greek

  579. word for

  580. practice

  581. simply means

  582. to do

  583. or make.

  584. You hope

  585. it would be

  586. kind of complex

  587. and we could

  588. unravel it

  589. and go,

  590. oh,

  591. now we

  592. understand

  593. what

  594. practicing

  595. means.

  596. John's

  597. not pulling

  598. any punches

  599. here.

  600. He's simply

  601. saying that

  602. you will

  603. not be

  604. characterized

  605. by sin.

  606. You will

  607. rather be

  608. characterized

  609. by

  610. righteousness.

  611. And beloved,

  612. the beautiful

  613. precious

  614. doctrine

  615. of regeneration

  616. is so

  617. being lost

  618. in the life

  619. of our

  620. churches.

  621. If you

  622. are in

  623. Christ,

  624. you have

  625. been

  626. made

  627. new.

  628. You are

  629. no longer

  630. your old

  631. self.

  632. You carry

  633. that baggage

  634. of yourself

  635. around,

  636. but you

  637. have been

  638. made

  639. new.

  640. And so

  641. many of

  642. us act

  643. as if

  644. we've

  645. not been

  646. set free

  647. from the

  648. bondage

  649. of sin.

  650. We are

  651. free from

  652. it.

  653. We've

  654. been given

  655. power to

  656. live to

  657. God.

  658. And not

  659. to

  660. ourselves.

  661. You can

  662. think of

  663. gospel

  664. character

  665. as

  666. obedience

  667. in all

  668. things.

  669. And we

  670. talk about

  671. these areas

  672. of Christian

  673. living.

  674. I get

  675. that this

  676. one kind

  677. of becomes

  678. a catch

  679. all.

  680. We intend

  681. for it to

  682. be a catch

  683. all,

  684. but I

  685. think so

  686. often,

  687. I'm seeing

  688. particularly

  689. with young

  690. people who

  691. have a

  692. high view

  693. of God

  694. and of

  695. God's

  696. sovereignty.

  697. Praise the

  698. Lord for

  699. that.

  700. Recognizing

  701. that God

  702. works in

  703. us to

  704. accomplish

  705. His

  706. goodwill.

  707. Also

  708. being lazy.

  709. Just

  710. expecting that

  711. at some

  712. point that

  713. there will

  714. be enough

  715. compulsion

  716. in you

  717. that you're

  718. going to

  719. begin to

  720. do the

  721. things that

  722. God wants

  723. you to

  724. do.

  725. And it's

  726. so often

  727. framed up

  728. as feeling.

  729. You don't

  730. feel like

  731. doing certain

  732. things.

  733. I teach

  734. my kids

  735. to be

  736. obedient.

  737. I train

  738. them.

  739. I show

  740. them how

  741. it is

  742. they're

  743. to be

  744. obedient.

  745. I discipline

  746. them when

  747. they're not

  748. obedient.

  749. If all

  750. you caught

  751. Judah down

  752. here talking

  753. about the

  754. rod,

  755. it's like

  756. a spanking.

  757. A lot

  758. like a

  759. spanking.

  760. Showing

  761. them the

  762. way that

  763. they should

  764. go.

  765. And it

  766. is never

  767. an excuse

  768. for one

  769. of my

  770. sons to

  771. say to

  772. me,

  773. I don't

  774. really feel

  775. like being

  776. obedient.

  777. There's not

  778. a compulsion

  779. in me

  780. to be

  781. obedient.

  782. How do

  783. I help

  784. my children

  785. to walk

  786. in the

  787. ways they

  788. should go?

  789. I tell

  790. them what

  791. they should

  792. do or

  793. shouldn't

  794. do,

  795. and I

  796. bring

  797. correction

  798. when they

  799. need it.

  800. The Lord

  801. deals with

  802. us in

  803. the exact

  804. same

  805. way.

  806. You've

  807. been given

  808. command,

  809. right and

  810. good for

  811. you,

  812. command.

  813. You have

  814. a heavenly

  815. Father that's

  816. perfect in

  817. all of His

  818. command,

  819. who loves

  820. you immensely

  821. and wants

  822. the very

  823. best

  824. for you.

  825. You should

  826. listen,

  827. and you

  828. should do

  829. the things

  830. that He's

  831. asked you

  832. to do or

  833. not asked

  834. you to

  835. do.

  836. Many people

  837. misunderstand

  838. that sin

  839. has two

  840. sides to

  841. it,

  842. both sins

  843. of omission

  844. and sins

  845. of commission.

  846. Omission are

  847. the things

  848. that we're

  849. not doing

  850. what God

  851. has commanded

  852. us to do.

  853. We're sinning

  854. because we're

  855. not doing

  856. what God

  857. has commanded

  858. us to do,

  859. and sins

  860. of commission

  861. are doing

  862. what God

  863. has commanded

  864. us not

  865. to do.

  866. Many of

  867. you probably

  868. grew up

  869. in churches

  870. where the

  871. pastor liked

  872. to rattle

  873. off the

  874. top three

  875. drinking,

  876. smoking,

  877. cursing,

  878. which in

  879. their proper

  880. context may

  881. or may not

  882. be sinful.

  883. All three

  884. of those,

  885. let's lift

  886. off some of

  887. the other

  888. ones that

  889. are almost

  890. definitely

  891. sinful in

  892. every case.

  893. We feel

  894. like if we

  895. just had the

  896. list and

  897. we're avoiding

  898. certain activity,

  899. then we're

  900. living to God.

  901. Not so,

  902. beloved,

  903. sins of

  904. omission

  905. and sins

  906. of commission.

  907. God's

  908. children

  909. recognize

  910. we have

  911. a loving

  912. Father,

  913. and we

  914. obey

  915. because

  916. He loves

  917. us.

  918. Now,

  919. is John

  920. suggesting

  921. that we

  922. must be

  923. perfectly

  924. righteous?

  925. No.

  926. He is

  927. not.

  928. Back up

  929. a couple

  930. of chapters

  931. to 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  932. chapter 1.

  933. Once again,

  934. strong language,

  935. verses 5

  936. through 10.

  937. Beginning

  938. of verse 5,

  939. this is the

  940. message that

  941. we have

  942. heard from

  943. Him and

  944. proclaimed to

  945. you that

  946. God is

  947. light and

  948. in Him is

  949. no darkness

  950. at all.

  951. God is

  952. perfect,

  953. God is

  954. holy.

  955. If we say

  956. we have

  957. fellowship

  958. with Him

  959. while we

  960. walk in

  961. darkness,

  962. practice

  963. sin,

  964. we lie

  965. and do

  966. not

  967. practice

  968. the

  969. truth.

  970. But if

  971. we walk

  972. in the

  973. light as

  974. He is

  975. in the

  976. light,

  977. we have

  978. fellowship

  979. with one

  980. another,

  981. and the

  982. blood of

  983. Jesus'

  984. Son cleanses

  985. us from

  986. all sin.

  987. Verse 8.

  988. Here we go.

  989. If we say

  990. we have

  991. no sin,

  992. if we say

  993. we're

  994. perfect,

  995. if we say

  996. we've

  997. arrived,

  998. we deceive

  999. ourselves,

  1000. and the

  1001. truth is

  1002. not in

  1003. us.

  1004. If we

  1005. confess

  1006. our sins,

  1007. He is

  1008. faithful and

  1009. just to

  1010. forgive us

  1011. our sins

  1012. and to

  1013. cleanse us

  1014. from all

  1015. unrighteousness.

  1016. If we

  1017. say we

  1018. have not

  1019. sinned,

  1020. we make

  1021. Him a

  1022. liar,

  1023. and His

  1024. word is

  1025. not in

  1026. us.

  1027. So very

  1028. clearly John

  1029. is saying

  1030. that there

  1031. should be

  1032. a practice,

  1033. there should

  1034. be a

  1035. trend,

  1036. a trajectory

  1037. of our

  1038. lives.

  1039. Not

  1040. perfect,

  1041. but pressing

  1042. toward

  1043. perfection.

  1044. Verse 3,

  1045. once again,

  1046. of chapter 3,

  1047. and everyone

  1048. who thus

  1049. hopes in

  1050. Him,

  1051. in the

  1052. future

  1053. glory,

  1054. in the

  1055. future

  1056. perfection,

  1057. purifies

  1058. Himself

  1059. as He

  1060. is pure.

  1061. John's not

  1062. saying we

  1063. must be

  1064. perfect,

  1065. he's saying

  1066. pay careful

  1067. attention to

  1068. the pattern

  1069. of your

  1070. life.

  1071. A biblical

  1072. view of

  1073. sanctification is

  1074. called progressive

  1075. sanctification.

  1076. It means that

  1077. as we're

  1078. working,

  1079. God is

  1080. working in

  1081. us and

  1082. He's

  1083. moving us

  1084. bit by

  1085. bit,

  1086. degree by

  1087. degree,

  1088. one degree

  1089. of glory

  1090. to another

  1091. degree of

  1092. glory,

  1093. further up.

  1094. And that

  1095. doesn't mean

  1096. that if you

  1097. zoom in on

  1098. any moment

  1099. of your

  1100. life that

  1101. you're moving

  1102. upward at

  1103. that moment.

  1104. You could

  1105. zoom in on

  1106. a single day

  1107. of my life

  1108. and it

  1109. would look

  1110. like my

  1111. heartbeat.

  1112. But as we

  1113. back away,

  1114. I can say to

  1115. you that I

  1116. sin.

  1117. I sin

  1118. grievously

  1119. still before

  1120. God.

  1121. But if I

  1122. step back

  1123. and I look

  1124. at the way

  1125. in which

  1126. God is

  1127. working in

  1128. me,

  1129. I can see

  1130. that I

  1131. hate sin

  1132. more than

  1133. I did

  1134. yesterday.

  1135. And I

  1136. love

  1137. righteousness

  1138. more than

  1139. I did

  1140. yesterday.

  1141. I desire

  1142. to please

  1143. my Father.

  1144. I am

  1145. moved by

  1146. His great

  1147. love for

  1148. me.

  1149. I recognize

  1150. who I am

  1151. in Him

  1152. and I

  1153. press on.

  1154. Grieved

  1155. by my sin,

  1156. I repent

  1157. and I turn

  1158. back to

  1159. the Lord.

  1160. I press

  1161. to know

  1162. Him in

  1163. obedience.

  1164. So our

  1165. sanctification

  1166. is

  1167. progressive.

  1168. I do

  1169. not expect

  1170. perfect

  1171. obedience

  1172. from my

  1173. sons.

  1174. I hope

  1175. for it.

  1176. I really

  1177. hope for

  1178. it.

  1179. But I

  1180. don't expect

  1181. it.

  1182. In fact,

  1183. I expect

  1184. the opposite

  1185. to be

  1186. true and

  1187. I bring

  1188. correction

  1189. when that

  1190. happens.

  1191. But never

  1192. is it

  1193. okay.

  1194. I say,

  1195. son,

  1196. why did

  1197. you not

  1198. do the

  1199. thing I

  1200. asked you

  1201. to do?

  1202. And they

  1203. go,

  1204. you're

  1205. going to

  1206. feel like

  1207. it.

  1208. The

  1209. retribution

  1210. is

  1211. swift.

  1212. So John

  1213. is saying

  1214. pay careful

  1215. attention

  1216. to the

  1217. pattern

  1218. of your

  1219. life.

  1220. Jesus

  1221. tells us

  1222. how to

  1223. recognize

  1224. the

  1225. regenerate

  1226. in Matthew

  1227. 7,

  1228. 17 and

  1229. 18.

  1230. So every

  1231. healthy tree

  1232. bears good

  1233. fruit,

  1234. but the

  1235. diseased

  1236. tree bears

  1237. bad fruit.

  1238. Apples

  1239. don't grow

  1240. on pear

  1241. trees.

  1242. A healthy

  1243. tree cannot

  1244. bear bad

  1245. fruit,

  1246. nor can

  1247. a diseased

  1248. tree bear

  1249. good fruit.

  1250. He's talking

  1251. about pattern

  1252. of our

  1253. life.

  1254. Peter

  1255. exhorts us

  1256. to the

  1257. activity of

  1258. self-examination

  1259. in 2 Peter

    2 Peter 1:10

  1260. chapter 1

  1261. verse 10.

  1262. He says,

  1263. therefore,

  1264. brothers,

  1265. be all the

  1266. more diligent

  1267. to confirm

  1268. your calling

  1269. and election.

  1270. For if you

  1271. practice these

  1272. qualities,

  1273. you will

  1274. never fail.

  1275. And these

  1276. qualities he's

  1277. referred to

  1278. previously in

  1279. chapter 1,

  1280. faith,

  1281. virtue,

  1282. knowledge,

  1283. self-control,

  1284. steadfastness,

  1285. godliness,

  1286. brotherly affection,

  1287. and love.

  1288. So he's

  1289. given us a

  1290. list of

  1291. qualities,

  1292. and he's

  1293. saying,

  1294. pick these

  1295. qualities up

  1296. and roll

  1297. them around,

  1298. meditate on

  1299. them.

  1300. Are these

  1301. characteristic

  1302. of your

  1303. life?

  1304. Faith,

  1305. virtue,

  1306. knowledge,

  1307. self-control,

  1308. steadfastness,

  1309. godliness,

  1310. brotherly affection,

  1311. love.

  1312. Peter says to

  1313. us,

  1314. don't flip to

  1315. the front of

  1316. your Bible and

  1317. write down the

  1318. date you

  1319. walked down

  1320. an aisle.

  1321. He says be

  1322. diligent to

  1323. confirm your

  1324. calling and

  1325. election by

  1326. these qualities.

  1327. Verse 10,

  1328. 1 John 3,

  1329. by this it

  1330. is evident.

  1331. By what?

  1332. A date?

  1333. A particular

  1334. activity?

  1335. The characteristic

  1336. of your life?

  1337. By this it is

  1338. evident who

  1339. are the

  1340. children of

  1341. God and

  1342. who are

  1343. the children

  1344. of the

  1345. devil.

  1346. Whoever does

  1347. not practice

  1348. righteousness is

  1349. not from

  1350. God,

  1351. nor is the

  1352. one who

  1353. does not

  1354. love his

  1355. brother.

  1356. And I love

  1357. as John is

  1358. about to launch

  1359. into a

  1360. wonderful chapter

  1361. on love,

  1362. he mentions it,

  1363. Peter mentions it,

  1364. in chapter 1,

  1365. love is the

  1366. most defining

  1367. characteristic of

  1368. the Christian

  1369. person.

  1370. Jesus says in

  1371. John 13,

  1372. 35,

  1373. by this all

  1374. people will

  1375. know that you

  1376. are my

  1377. disciples if

  1378. you have

  1379. love for

  1380. one another.

  1381. God,

  1382. I never want

  1383. to stand up

  1384. here and

  1385. cause you to

  1386. doubt your

  1387. salvation unless

  1388. that's the

  1389. very thing you

  1390. need.

  1391. I care about

  1392. your souls

  1393. deeply.

  1394. I know many

  1395. of you this

  1396. room very well,

  1397. some of you I

  1398. don't know at

  1399. all, I'm seeing

  1400. faces I've never

  1401. seen before,

  1402. but I see you

  1403. as eternal and I

  1404. care about you

  1405. immensely.

  1406. Be diligent to

  1407. examine yourself,

  1408. make sure that

  1409. you are in the

  1410. faith, and if

  1411. you will not

  1412. repent and

  1413. believe, place

  1414. your hope in the

  1415. righteousness of

  1416. Christ that he

  1417. would grant it

  1418. to you.

  1419. So we are to

  1420. measure out

  1421. our lives.

  1422. Jesus is our

  1423. great example.

  1424. We are to

  1425. conform to

  1426. him.

  1427. And certainly

  1428. as we see love

  1429. as the most

  1430. defining characteristic

  1431. of the Christian

  1432. persons, he is

  1433. the high example

  1434. of love.

  1435. As Jesus'

  1436. hands and his

  1437. feet were pounded

  1438. onto a cross,

  1439. and as he hung

  1440. for our sins,

  1441. experiencing so

  1442. much more than

  1443. we could possibly

  1444. imagine the

  1445. physical anguish

  1446. of hanging on

  1447. that cross, he

  1448. bore God's

  1449. wrath on our

  1450. behalf.

  1451. Wes and Liz

  1452. sang for us

  1453. this morning how

  1454. deep the

  1455. Father's love

  1456. for us.

  1457. And I love

  1458. that they

  1459. worked so

  1460. hard at

  1461. being so

  1462. precise, even

  1463. at the expense

  1464. of changing

  1465. lyrics.

  1466. There's a line,

  1467. I think it's in

  1468. the second

  1469. verse, it

  1470. says, it

  1471. was my

  1472. sin that

  1473. held him

  1474. there, Jesus

  1475. on the cross.

  1476. And I don't

  1477. think that's

  1478. entirely inaccurate

  1479. to say that,

  1480. but I like that

  1481. they changed the

  1482. lyric to it.

  1483. It was his

  1484. love that

  1485. held him

  1486. there.

  1487. Jesus

  1488. restrained

  1489. all the

  1490. power of

  1491. heaven to

  1492. come and

  1493. pluck him

  1494. off that

  1495. cross.

  1496. He set

  1497. them at

  1498. bay that

  1499. he might

  1500. die for

  1501. us.

  1502. Two quotes

  1503. from Charles

  1504. Spurgeon for

  1505. you, I

  1506. think they're

  1507. both on

  1508. your bulletin.

  1509. The Christian

  1510. should take

  1511. nothing short

  1512. of Christ

  1513. for his

  1514. model.

  1515. Beloved, do

  1516. not compare

  1517. yourself to

  1518. one of your

  1519. Christian friends

  1520. that you look

  1521. up to.

  1522. Do not

  1523. compare

  1524. yourself to

  1525. a Christian

  1526. celebrity.

  1527. Please don't

  1528. compare yourself

  1529. to me.

  1530. Hold up

  1531. Christ as

  1532. your example

  1533. and let's

  1534. press together

  1535. towards him.

  1536. Aim at the

  1537. highest conceivable

  1538. degree of

  1539. holiness.

  1540. And though you

  1541. will not be

  1542. perfect, never

  1543. excuse yourselves

  1544. because you

  1545. are not.

  1546. So as those

  1547. who have been

  1548. redeemed by

  1549. Christ, we

  1550. worship him

  1551. through gospel

  1552. character, conforming

  1553. to him, both

  1554. in private and

  1555. in public.

  1556. If you are in

  1557. Christ, you

  1558. will desire to

  1559. worship him in

  1560. all matters of

  1561. your life.

  1562. Your concern is

  1563. not the approval

  1564. of man, but the

  1565. approval of God.

  1566. God.

  1567. He wants all of

  1568. you because he

  1569. loves you and

  1570. because he knows

  1571. what is good for

  1572. you.

  1573. That includes the

  1574. thoughts in your

  1575. mind and the

  1576. feelings that you

  1577. feel and the

  1578. motivations behind

  1579. your activity.

  1580. Don't merely dress

  1581. yourself up and

  1582. look righteous on

  1583. the outside.

  1584. The Pharisees

  1585. were condemned

  1586. for that, for

  1587. being whitewashed

  1588. tombs, but

  1589. inside dead.

  1590. Be introspective.

  1591. Know yourself.

  1592. Know why you

  1593. do what you

  1594. do.

  1595. Why you think

  1596. what you think.

  1597. Why you feel

  1598. what you feel and

  1599. bring all of

  1600. that into

  1601. conformity with

  1602. Christ.

  1603. Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  1604. chapter 22.

  1605. A lawyer, in

  1606. order to trick

  1607. Jesus, asks him

  1608. in verse 36,

  1609. Teacher, which

  1610. is the greatest

  1611. commandment in

  1612. the law?

  1613. And Jesus

  1614. replies, you

  1615. shall love the

  1616. Lord your God

  1617. with all your

  1618. heart and with

  1619. all your soul and

  1620. with all your

  1621. mind.

  1622. All of you.

  1623. Every bit of

  1624. you.

  1625. Verse 38, this

  1626. is the great and

  1627. first commandment

  1628. and a second is

  1629. like it.

  1630. You shall love

  1631. your neighbor as

  1632. yourself.

  1633. On these two

  1634. commandments

  1635. depend or

  1636. hang all the

  1637. law and the

  1638. prophets.

  1639. They're all

  1640. fulfilled in

  1641. these two

  1642. commandments.

  1643. Give all of

  1644. yourself to God

  1645. and give all of

  1646. yourself to your

  1647. neighbors.

  1648. Our identity

  1649. permeates all

  1650. that we are and

  1651. therefore all

  1652. that we do.

  1653. Beloved, I am

  1654. not Nathan who

  1655. is a husband

  1656. and a father.

  1657. I used to

  1658. use things like

  1659. rock climber and

  1660. whitewater paddler

  1661. but I don't do

  1662. those things anymore

  1663. because I'm

  1664. getting old.

  1665. A hunter.

  1666. I do some

  1667. hunting now.

  1668. Oh, and a

  1669. Christian.

  1670. Oh, and on

  1671. Sundays I like to

  1672. participate with

  1673. the church.

  1674. church.

  1675. I am a Christian

  1676. who is named

  1677. Nathan.

  1678. Who is a

  1679. husband and a

  1680. father and a

  1681. pastor.

  1682. The list goes

  1683. on.

  1684. And it

  1685. permeates every

  1686. bit of who I

  1687. am.

  1688. Includes all of

  1689. it.

  1690. Thoughts,

  1691. feelings,

  1692. desires,

  1693. motivations,

  1694. concerns,

  1695. as well as

  1696. our activity.

  1697. Paul writes a

  1698. very curious

  1699. thing in 1

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  1700. Corinthians 10

  1701. verse 31.

  1702. So whether you

  1703. eat or drink

  1704. or whatever

  1705. you do,

  1706. do all to the

  1707. glory of God.

  1708. Paul here

  1709. suggests that we

  1710. can work and

  1711. recreate and

  1712. rest to the

  1713. glory of God.

  1714. That you can

  1715. drive your car,

  1716. mow your lawn,

  1717. do the dishes,

  1718. fold the laundry,

  1719. and change diapers

  1720. to the glory of

  1721. God.

  1722. I'm still working

  1723. on the last.

  1724. How?

  1725. How is all of

  1726. life aimed at

  1727. Him?

  1728. I think we

  1729. could talk at

  1730. length about

  1731. this, but in

  1732. brief this

  1733. morning,

  1734. Colossians 3.17,

  1735. Paul says,

  1736. and whatever

  1737. you do,

  1738. in word or

  1739. deed,

  1740. do everything

  1741. in the name

  1742. of the Lord

  1743. Jesus,

  1744. giving thanks

  1745. to God the

  1746. Father through

  1747. Him.

  1748. So I think in

  1749. the simplest

  1750. way, as we

  1751. consider how

  1752. is it that we

  1753. can bring all

  1754. of our life

  1755. into conformity

  1756. with Christ,

  1757. we can worship

  1758. God with all

  1759. that we do,

  1760. even in the

  1761. mundane things

  1762. of life,

  1763. that we have

  1764. the proper

  1765. attitude.

  1766. We have the

  1767. right motivation,

  1768. and that is

  1769. that we are

  1770. thankful for

  1771. the redemptive

  1772. work of

  1773. Christ.

  1774. We recognize

  1775. that we have

  1776. our very being

  1777. because of

  1778. Him,

  1779. and it is for

  1780. Him that we

  1781. exist,

  1782. even doing the

  1783. mundane things

  1784. of life.

  1785. When we're called

  1786. to follow Christ,

  1787. we are not called

  1788. to stop brushing

  1789. our teeth.

  1790. God's

  1791. God's

  1792. God's

  1793. God's

  1794. God's

  1795. God's

  1796. God's

  1797. glory.

  1798. We've talked

  1799. the last couple

  1800. of weeks about

  1801. the member

  1802. health survey

  1803. that we sent

  1804. out at the

  1805. end of the

  1806. summer.

  1807. I may have

  1808. been misreporting

  1809. how many

  1810. responses we

  1811. had of all

  1812. the members

  1813. of our

  1814. church.

  1815. We had 64

  1816. responses

  1817. total.

  1818. And there

  1819. were two

  1820. questions that I

  1821. want to share

  1822. the responses

  1823. to with you.

  1824. I keep calling

  1825. them questions,

  1826. their statements

  1827. with agreeance

  1828. or disagreeance

  1829. answers.

  1830. So the first

  1831. statement,

  1832. number 17,

  1833. I have grown

  1834. in holiness

  1835. over the past

  1836. year.

  1837. You get the

  1838. drive of that

  1839. question,

  1840. what we're

  1841. trying to get

  1842. at.

  1843. Do you

  1844. perceive that

  1845. you have

  1846. grown in

  1847. holiness over

  1848. the past

  1849. year?

  1850. Are you,

  1851. in fact,

  1852. being

  1853. sanctified?

  1854. And by

  1855. and large,

  1856. most people

  1857. in our

  1858. congregation

  1859. said they

  1860. agree or

  1861. strongly

  1862. agree.

  1863. Praise the

  1864. Lord.

  1865. I can

  1866. understand

  1867. being in

  1868. the agree

  1869. category.

  1870. Strongly

  1871. agree is

  1872. pretty strong,

  1873. right?

  1874. Some of you

  1875. would never

  1876. answer strongly

  1877. agree.

  1878. But a

  1879. good high

  1880. percentage

  1881. agree or

  1882. strongly

  1883. agree.

  1884. Four members

  1885. of our

  1886. church said

  1887. disagree.

  1888. They have

  1889. not grown in

  1890. holiness over

  1891. the past

  1892. year.

  1893. Fourteen

  1894. said,

  1895. I'm not

  1896. sure.

  1897. I don't

  1898. know if I

  1899. have or

  1900. haven't.

  1901. So 18

  1902. people of

  1903. these 64

  1904. members of

  1905. our church

  1906. see no

  1907. upper

  1908. trajectory.

  1909. Does that

  1910. mean they're

  1911. outside the

  1912. faith?

  1913. Not

  1914. necessarily.

  1915. They very

  1916. well could

  1917. be and

  1918. they're just

  1919. having a

  1920. bad year.

  1921. We've got to

  1922. zoom to the

  1923. right spot

  1924. in that

  1925. diagram of

  1926. their trajectory

  1927. toward

  1928. holiness.

  1929. But they

  1930. may also

  1931. need to

  1932. really

  1933. consider,

  1934. do they

  1935. practice

  1936. sin?

  1937. Are they

  1938. characterized

  1939. by

  1940. sinfulness?

  1941. Or are

  1942. they

  1943. characterized

  1944. by

  1945. righteousness?

  1946. Maybe a

  1947. bit more

  1948. telling.

  1949. Statement

  1950. 18,

  1951. I do

  1952. not

  1953. commit

  1954. any

  1955. particular

  1956. sin

  1957. habitually.

  1958. Let's

  1959. cycle back

  1960. through the

  1961. same thing.

  1962. Which I

  1963. would suggest

  1964. to you is a

  1965. sign that

  1966. there's no

  1967. real repentance

  1968. for that

  1969. sin at

  1970. least.

  1971. A little

  1972. more

  1973. telling.

  1974. Five

  1975. people

  1976. strongly

  1977. disagreed

  1978. with that

  1979. statement.

  1980. 18,

  1981. disagreed.

  1982. 12,

  1983. weren't

  1984. sure.

  1985. 35 total

  1986. people that

  1987. responded to

  1988. the survey

  1989. that are

  1990. members of

  1991. our church,

  1992. 54.7%

  1993. seem to

  1994. be a

  1995. particular

  1996. sin.

  1997. The same

  1998. thing over

  1999. and over

  2000. and over

  2001. and over.

  2002. If you

  2003. find yourself

  2004. in that

  2005. number as

  2006. members of

  2007. our church

  2008. or if you're

  2009. a non-member

  2010. and you

  2011. find yourself

  2012. relating to

  2013. that,

  2014. you need

  2015. to consider

  2016. carefully

  2017. weigh the

  2018. position of

  2019. your soul.

  2020. If you do

  2021. not have a

  2022. confidence that

  2023. you are in

  2024. Christ,

  2025. repent and

  2026. believe.

  2027. In closing,

  2028. I want to

  2029. read to you

  2030. from Colossians

    Colossians 3:5

  2031. chapter 3,

  2032. verse 5 and

  2033. 14.

  2034. And I want

  2035. you,

  2036. you can turn

  2037. there if you

  2038. would like,

  2039. you can just

  2040. close your eyes

  2041. and listen to

  2042. me as I

  2043. read it.

  2044. I want you

  2045. to consider

  2046. what characterizes

  2047. your life.

  2048. This list by

  2049. Paul of

  2050. things to

  2051. put to

  2052. death or

  2053. to put

  2054. off and

  2055. things to

  2056. put on.

  2057. Where do

  2058. you find

  2059. yourself moving

  2060. toward?

  2061. Some of you

  2062. might be

  2063. brand new

  2064. believers.

  2065. No one's

  2066. expecting

  2067. perfection of

  2068. you.

  2069. We're just

  2070. expecting

  2071. motion toward

  2072. God, away

  2073. from sin.

  2074. Beginning

  2075. in verse 5,

  2076. Paul writes,

  2077. put to death

  2078. therefore what

  2079. is earthly

  2080. in you.

  2081. sexual

  2082. immorality,

  2083. impurity,

  2084. passion,

  2085. evil desire,

  2086. and covetousness

  2087. which is

  2088. idolatry.

  2089. On account

  2090. of these,

  2091. the wrath of

  2092. God is

  2093. coming.

  2094. In these,

  2095. you too

  2096. once walked

  2097. when you

  2098. were living

  2099. in them.

  2100. But now

  2101. you must

  2102. put them

  2103. all away.

  2104. Anger,

  2105. wrath,

  2106. malice,

  2107. slander,

  2108. and obscene

  2109. talk from

  2110. your mouth.

  2111. Do not

  2112. lie to one

  2113. another,

  2114. seeing that

  2115. you have put

  2116. off the

  2117. old self

  2118. with its

  2119. practices

  2120. and have

  2121. put on

  2122. the new

  2123. self

  2124. which is

  2125. being renewed

  2126. in knowledge

  2127. after the

  2128. image of

  2129. its creator.

  2130. Here there

  2131. is not

  2132. Greek or

  2133. Jew,

  2134. circumcised

  2135. and uncircumcised,

  2136. barbarian,

  2137. Scythian,

  2138. slave,

  2139. free,

  2140. but Christ

  2141. is all

  2142. and in

  2143. all.

  2144. Put on

  2145. then,

  2146. as God's

  2147. chosen ones,

  2148. holy and

  2149. beloved,

  2150. compassionate

  2151. hearts,

  2152. kindness,

  2153. humility,

  2154. meekness,

  2155. and patience,

  2156. bearing with

  2157. one another,

  2158. and if one

  2159. has a complaint

  2160. against another,

  2161. forgiving each

  2162. other as the

  2163. Lord has

  2164. forgiven you,

  2165. so you also

  2166. must forgive.

  2167. And above all

  2168. these,

  2169. put on

  2170. love,

  2171. which binds

  2172. everything together

  2173. in perfect

  2174. harmony.

  2175. So how do we

  2176. put off

  2177. and put on?

  2178. Start with the

  2179. Scripture.

  2180. Start with

  2181. knowing God's

  2182. good commands

  2183. for us.

  2184. We're not

  2185. antinomians,

  2186. which means

  2187. without the

  2188. law.

  2189. We recognize

  2190. that God's

  2191. given us

  2192. instruction

  2193. and that we

  2194. should obey

  2195. God's good

  2196. instruction.

  2197. And we pray.

  2198. We turn that

  2199. to prayer

  2200. in desperation

  2201. that God

  2202. would move

  2203. and work

  2204. in us

  2205. as we

  2206. work.

  2207. This is our

  2208. gospel conviction.

  2209. We're in

  2210. fellowship with

  2211. other Christians

  2212. and accountable

  2213. to one another.

  2214. Gathering in

  2215. settings like

  2216. this,

  2217. but not just

  2218. this.

  2219. Sunday morning

  2220. sermons are

  2221. important,

  2222. but they're

  2223. not enough.

  2224. Gathering with

  2225. community groups

  2226. that you might

  2227. know people

  2228. and be known

  2229. and even

  2230. more centered

  2231. to that,

  2232. what we're

  2233. going to start

  2234. calling core

  2235. groups.

  2236. If you're

  2237. meeting with

  2238. a couple

  2239. of individuals

  2240. and you're

  2241. getting it

  2242. in,

  2243. you're

  2244. confessing

  2245. sin to

  2246. one another.

  2247. You're

  2248. really,

  2249. really known

  2250. by a couple

  2251. of guys

  2252. or a couple

  2253. of girls.

  2254. Fellowship,

  2255. gospel,

  2256. community.

  2257. Obedience.

  2258. You just

  2259. begin to do

  2260. the things

  2261. that God

  2262. has commanded

  2263. you to do.

  2264. If you are

  2265. His,

  2266. I can promise

  2267. you,

  2268. you will be

  2269. empowered for

  2270. that activity.

  2271. Get up

  2272. and start

  2273. doing it.

  2274. This is your

  2275. gospel character.

  2276. Next week we'll

  2277. talk about

  2278. gospel proclamation

  2279. which I would

  2280. suggest to you

  2281. is also a

  2282. defining characteristic

  2283. of who we

  2284. are in Christ

  2285. and that is

  2286. our gospel

  2287. commission.

  2288. I hope

  2289. this morning

  2290. my prayer

  2291. and as I'm

  2292. about to

  2293. pray

  2294. is that you

  2295. will recognize

  2296. that God

  2297. has given

  2298. to you

  2299. as His

  2300. child

  2301. a path

  2302. to walk.

  2303. And if you

  2304. are not

  2305. on that

  2306. path,

  2307. the answer

  2308. is to repent

  2309. and believe.

  2310. Whether you're

  2311. in the faith

  2312. or not,

  2313. if you are

  2314. righteous in

  2315. Christ,

  2316. you still

  2317. need to

  2318. repent

  2319. of that

  2320. sin

  2321. and get

  2322. back on

  2323. that path.

  2324. You may

  2325. find that

  2326. you're going

  2327. in the

  2328. opposite

  2329. direction

  2330. altogether.

  2331. Repent

  2332. and believe

  2333. in Christ.

  2334. Let's pray.

  2335. Thank you.
