  1. If you would, would you please open your Bibles and turn to Acts chapter 12.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. I got to preach on Acts chapter 10 a little bit over a month ago.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  4. And before we kind of go into where Nathan brought us last week and where we are right

  5. now, I definitely want to draw attention to something that David said in his prayer.

  6. David was praying that we would be participating in the service through our worship, through

  7. the music, through our prayers, through the preaching, through the receiving of the word,

  8. through our giving.

  9. So, painting the picture that all of this is worship, not just the music that was played.

  10. Even as you're listening right now, like you're honoring God in the way that you receive this,

  11. in the way that you ask God and you're praying for Him to show you what you need to see about

  12. this text.

  13. So, all of this is worship.

  14. I need your prayers while I preach.

  15. I am so, I'm not infallible like God's word is.

  16. Thankfully, God chooses to use us.

  17. And so, I take that very seriously.

  18. But, please pray for me during this time.

  19. Be praying for other people here that are bringing completely different stories into the service

  20. who need to hear God's word.

  21. And God's word pierces us like an arrow.

  22. So, and each person needs to hear this in a way that God is kind of preparing their hearts for.

  23. So, be praying for me.

  24. Be praying for each other.

  25. Be remembering that all of this is worship.

  26. It's not just the music on the stage.

  27. So, with that, let's kind of talk about where we've been in Acts so far.

  28. Last week, Nathan preached on finishing up Acts 11.

  29. And we kind of have seen a lot of really big pivotal things happen in Acts so far.

  30. We've seen the church grow from just a very, very small number, a couple hundred people,

  31. to thousands of people being added daily.

  32. And it just, it's crazy.

  33. And so, then we're seeing persecution come.

  34. We see Stephen martyred.

  35. And then we have this other big event with the Gentiles being brought in.

  36. And we talked about that in Acts 10.

  37. So, there's a lot of really big events.

  38. The church is growing.

  39. Gentiles are being added into the church, which to us doesn't seem like a big deal.

  40. But if you're a first century Jew, that's a huge deal.

  41. And now, what we've been doing, where we were last week,

  42. is we were kind of talking about Paul and Barnabas.

  43. And they're in Antioch.

  44. So, now what the author of Acts, Luke, is doing is he's bringing us back into Jerusalem.

  45. And if you remember, where we left in Jerusalem was Stephen being martyred.

  46. So, we're coming back to persecution.

  47. And you're going to see that persecution is this really, really big theme of Acts.

  48. And we're going to kind of hit it over and over and over again.

  49. And something that you're going to see, if you're noticing,

  50. is that where there's persecution, there's going to be gospel growth and gospel sharing.

  51. Where there's gospel sharing, there's going to be persecution.

  52. It's not so much a cause and effect, but think of it as two sides of the same coin.

  53. If you see persecution, you're going to see gospel growth.

  54. When you see gospel growth, gospel proclamation, you will see persecution.

  55. And we know that persecution will come to the believer.

  56. The text that we're going to look at this morning is 2 Timothy 3.12,

  57. which says that all who desire to live a godly life will be persecuted,

  58. which is not an easy thing to hear.

  59. We also know that Satan is the enemy of the gospel.

  60. We have an enemy, and it's not our neighbors or those who disagree with us politically.

  61. It is a spiritual enemy whose desire is to stifle the gospel

  62. and keep the believer apart from God.

  63. We see that it's in Ephesians where Paul is saying,

  64. hey, our struggle is not against flesh and blood.

  65. So it's not against people, but it's against these principalities.

  66. It's against these authorities of the spiritual world.

  67. And so we know that Satan is the enemy of the gospel,

  68. and Satan's drive, his goal, is to silence the believer,

  69. to silence the proclamation of the gospel,

  70. to keep the believer away from God.

  71. So the question that I'm asking, that I'm posing to you this morning is,

  72. it's not will you respond to persecution,

  73. but how.

  74. How will you respond to persecution when it comes?

  75. So with that, we're going to read Acts 12, verses 1 through 19,

    Acts 12:1–19

  76. and then we're going to pray real quick,

  77. and then we're going to go right into it.

  78. Starting in verse 1.

  79. About that time, Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church.

  80. He killed James the brother of John with the sword,

  81. and when he saw that it pleased the Jews,

  82. he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

  83. This was during the days of unleavened bread.

  84. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison,

  85. delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him,

  86. intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.

  87. So Peter was kept in prison,

  88. but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

  89. Now when Herod was about to bring him out on that very night,

  90. Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,

  91. bound with chains,

  92. and centuries before the door were guarding the prison.

  93. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him,

  94. and a light shone in the cell.

  95. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying,

  96. Get up quickly.

  97. And the chains fell off of his hands.

  98. And the angel said to him,

  99. Dress yourself and put on your sandals.

  100. And he did so.

  101. And he said to him,

  102. Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.

  103. And he went out and followed him.

  104. He did not know what was being done by the angel was real,

  105. but thought he was seeing a vision.

  106. When they had passed the first and the second guard,

  107. they came to the iron gate, leading into the city.

  108. It opened for them of its own accord,

  109. and they went out and went along one street.

  110. And immediately the angel left him.

  111. When Peter came to himself, he said,

  112. Now I am sure the Lord has sent his angel

  113. and rescued me from the hands of Herod

  114. and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.

  115. When he realized this,

  116. he went to the house of Mary,

  117. the mother of John,

  118. whose other name was Mark,

  119. where many were gathered together and were praying.

  120. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway,

  121. a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.

  122. Recognizing Peter's voice in her joy,

  123. she did not open the gate,

  124. but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate.

  125. They said to her,

  126. You are out of your mind.

  127. But she kept insisting that it was so.

  128. And they kept saying,

  129. It is his angel.

  130. But Peter continued knocking.

  131. And when they opened,

  132. they saw him,

  133. and they were amazed.

  134. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent,

  135. he described to them

  136. how the Lord had brought him out of prison.

  137. And he said to them,

  138. Tell these things to James and to the brothers.

  139. Then he departed and went to another place.

  140. Now when day came,

  141. there was no little disturbance among the soldiers

  142. over what became of Peter.

  143. And after Herod searched for him and did not find him,

  144. he examined the sentries

  145. in order that they should be put to death.

  146. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea

  147. and spent time there.

  148. Pray with me real quickly.

  149. Heavenly Father,

  150. thank you for your word.

  151. Thank you for giving it to us

  152. that you speak to us through your word.

  153. No other text can do that, God.

  154. Only your word can.

  155. Only your word can speak to us

  156. in a unique way

  157. that convicts us,

  158. that encourages us.

  159. And we pray that you would do those things this morning,

  160. that you would use me,

  161. God, a sinner,

  162. that you would use me to proclaim your truth,

  163. that there would be clarity this morning,

  164. that we would all walk away

  165. encouraged, convicted,

  166. and changed by your word.

  167. We ask this in Christ's name.

  168. Amen.

  169. Okay, so,

  170. if you're taking notes,

  171. one of the first things that we're saying right now

  172. is that persecution will come to the believer.

  173. Persecution will come to the believer.

  174. That is seen in Acts chapter 12,

    Acts 12:1–2

  175. verses 1 through 2.

  176. If you're looking at a text,

  177. you can see about that time,

  178. Herod the king laid violent hands

  179. on some who belonged to the church.

  180. He killed James,

  181. the brother of John,

  182. with the sword,

  183. and when he saw that it pleased the Jews,

  184. he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

  185. So,

  186. I want to take like a quick second

  187. and just do a little bit of character clarification,

  188. because if you're looking at the text,

  189. it might be a little confusing who's who.

  190. Okay, so James,

  191. not the author of James.

  192. Okay,

  193. you remember,

  194. if you recall,

  195. Jesus is walking alongside the Sea of Galilee,

  196. and he calls two men.

  197. Do you remember their names?

  198. It's James and John.

  199. They're brothers.

  200. That's the James that we're talking about.

  201. So, this is,

  202. while Stephen was the first martyr of the gospel,

  203. this is the first apostle who's been martyred.

  204. This is not James, brother of Jesus.

  205. Okay,

  206. that's the James who wrote the book of James.

  207. Okay,

  208. second thing,

  209. his brother is John.

  210. Later on in the story,

  211. they talk about John Mark.

  212. That's not James' brother.

  213. Okay,

  214. next thing I need to say,

  215. when Peter asks about,

  216. let's see,

  217. verse 17,

  218. he says,

  219. tell these things to James.

  220. It's not the James that just died.

  221. So,

  222. he knows.

  223. He's talking about James,

  224. Justice,

  225. brother of Jesus,

  226. who's now going to start kind of leading the church in Jerusalem.

  227. Second thing is Herod.

  228. There's a lot of Herods.

  229. Okay,

  230. there's Herod,

  231. the one that tried to kill baby Jesus.

  232. That's not the Herod we're talking about.

  233. There's the Herod that questioned Jesus.

  234. That's Herod Antipas.

  235. Okay,

  236. that's not the one that we're talking about here.

  237. Herod Agrippa,

  238. that's the one we're talking about.

  239. He's the one who we're going to continue on with the story later on.

  240. Okay,

  241. so,

  242. the couple things that we see here in the text.

  243. Do you guys notice that James just kind of gets persecuted and killed with no trial?

  244. Like,

  245. there's nothing that happens.

  246. There's no,

  247. there's no,

  248. like,

  249. he goes before a public forum.

  250. There's no,

  251. there's nothing.

  252. It's just James is,

  253. at least that's the way that Luke describes it in the text,

  254. is James is just killed.

  255. Out of nowhere.

  256. And then,

  257. you'll see what Herod does,

  258. is he kind of waits to see what the Jews are going to react to it.

  259. So,

  260. he kills James.

  261. Herod is kind of looking for the applause of man in this.

  262. And he sees,

  263. okay,

  264. well,

  265. how are the Jews going to react to this?

  266. And they react favorably.

  267. And he's like,

  268. okay,

  269. I'm going to kill Peter next.

  270. So,

  271. he throws Peter in prison.

  272. Again,

  273. no trial.

  274. Think about that.

  275. That's you.

  276. I mean,

  277. no trial here.

  278. And you're just,

  279. there's no one to say,

  280. no,

  281. no,

  282. no,

  283. this guy,

  284. he's a good man.

  285. He should not die.

  286. There's no one to do that.

  287. If you were thrown in prison,

  288. you would have friends who'd be able to come to your call,

  289. and they would be able to voice their opinion for you,

  290. and vouch for you,

  291. and say,

  292. no,

  293. this is a good woman.

  294. This is a good man.

  295. That does not happen to James or Peter.

  296. They don't get that opportunity.

  297. So,

  298. it's so,

  299. it's so incredibly unjust.

  300. And so,

  301. Peter's next in line,

  302. and the thing that,

  303. the reason why he hasn't been executed yet,

  304. is so that Passover can be honored.

  305. There's this really tragic irony in upholding the law,

  306. and upholding these feasts,

  307. so that once those are done,

  308. then we can kill our guy.

  309. So,

  310. again,

  311. Peter's next in line to die,

  312. and the only thing that's waiting on that,

  313. is Herod's approval,

  314. and the Passover being completed.

  315. And so,

  316. like James and Peter,

  317. we're going to be persecuted just the same.

  318. It's going to look differently,

  319. and there's reasons why I would say,

  320. we too will be persecuted.

  321. The first reason is that Jesus is our master.

  322. This is huge to get.

  323. John 15,

  324. 20.

  325. So,

  326. Jesus is talking to his disciples,

  327. and he says,

  328. remember the word that I said to you,

  329. a servant is not greater than his master.

  330. If they persecuted me,

  331. they will persecute you.

  332. If they kept my word,

  333. they will also keep yours.

  334. Okay,

  335. this is worth turning to,

  336. 2 Timothy 3.12.

  337. Okay,

  338. so,

  339. Paul is writing this verse,

  340. not from the comfort of freedom,

  341. and the comfort of a library somewhere,

  342. or a study.

  343. Paul is writing this in chains,

  344. knowing that his execution is near.

  345. So,

  346. Paul is writing this text,

  347. and he says in verse 12,

  348. indeed,

  349. all who desire to live a godly life in Christ,

  350. will be persecuted,

  351. while evil people and imposters will go on from bad to worse,

  352. deceiving,

  353. and being deceived.

  354. So,

  355. that's huge to get,

  356. because Peter,

  357. Paul is not saying that from theory.

  358. He's saying that from personal experience.

  359. And,

  360. so,

  361. again,

  362. the first reason is that Jesus is our master.

  363. We're identifying with Christ,

  364. we will be persecuted.

  365. The second reason is that

  366. we're foreign to the world.

  367. Peter kind of exhorts his writers over and over again,

  368. saying,

  369. hey,

  370. you guys are strangers and exiles.

  371. And then we see that theme with Paul where he says,

  372. hey,

  373. you're to be in the world,

  374. but not of the world.

  375. So,

  376. saying that

  377. this earth is not our home.

  378. The ways of the world are not our ways.

  379. We are called out of this world.

  380. We are called out of sin,

  381. and we're called strangers and exiles.

  382. So,

  383. the world will see that we are,

  384. we don't go with everything that the world goes with.

  385. So,

  386. that we're foreign to the world.

  387. It's not a question of,

  388. like I said earlier,

  389. it's not a question of will we respond to persecution,

  390. but how will we respond to persecution?

  391. Because of these reasons,

  392. Jesus is our master,

  393. we're strangers and exiles to the world.

  394. We're going to appear different,

  395. because we've been called out of darkness,

  396. so we no longer look like that darkness.

  397. So,

  398. how are we going to respond?

  399. The first thing is that,

  400. we can kind of look at,

  401. the reaction of the church.

  402. The church is persecuted,

  403. and it doesn't shrink back,

  404. but instead it goes forth of a message even more,

  405. and it proclaims it even more.

  406. It's that two sides of the same coin.

  407. There's persecution,

  408. there's going to be gospel proclamation,

  409. and the church doesn't shrink back from that gospel proclamation,

  410. and so,

  411. as people who will be persecuted,

  412. we respond by,

  413. not being surprised,

  414. when it comes.

  415. The church isn't shocked by it.

  416. And if they are,

  417. Luke doesn't add that into the story.

  418. It makes it very clear,

  419. that the church,

  420. responds to James being killed unjustly,

  421. out of nowhere,

  422. with no trial,

  423. and Peter being next in line,

  424. they respond with prayer,

  425. they're not surprised,

  426. they're not going,

  427. and creating a mob,

  428. and demanding justice.

  429. They're counting it all joy.

  430. And then they're praying.

  431. We're going to get into that in a minute,

  432. but that's the church's response.

  433. Do you see that?

  434. Like,

  435. it's so important to see.

  436. Okay,

  437. persecution comes,

  438. the church prays.

  439. That's the church's response.

  440. Not surprised.

  441. Yes,

  442. grieved.

  443. I don't want to,

  444. I don't want to understate that,

  445. that the church is some machine,

  446. that is so godly,

  447. and so holy,

  448. that when one of their own gets killed,

  449. or someone doesn't get healed,

  450. they're immediately like,

  451. well,

  452. God is good,

  453. we're just going to pray,

  454. and that's what we're going to do.

  455. Like,

  456. no,

  457. I'm sure,

  458. like,

  459. by no means do I believe,

  460. that the church was not mourning James' death,

  461. and they weren't crying out.

  462. Like,

  463. I absolutely believe that.

  464. So,

  465. church is not mechanical in that.

  466. But,

  467. it isn't surprised,

  468. and they respond in prayer,

  469. grief,

  470. and in prayer.

  471. The thing that I want to ask is,

  472. okay,

  473. so what if we aren't seeing persecution in our lives?

  474. This is a big question.

  475. We're,

  476. we're seeing the type of persecution here,

  477. where someone's being executed,

  478. and thrown in jail,

  479. wrongly.

  480. So,

  481. we're not seeing that.

  482. We're sharing the gospel,

  483. but we're not seeing ourselves be thrown in jail.

  484. And thankfully,

  485. our,

  486. our government protects us in that way.

  487. But,

  488. nonetheless,

  489. the promise is true.

  490. Right?

  491. The promise is true,

  492. that all who desire to live a godly life,

  493. will be persecuted.

  494. There is not,

  495. this,

  496. explanation that he gives,

  497. saying like,

  498. unless you're living,

  499. in a country that allows you to share the gospel.

  500. No,

  501. no,

  502. he's just saying,

  503. hey,

  504. all who desire to live a godly life,

  505. will be persecuted.

  506. So,

  507. what if we don't see that though?

  508. What if you're looking around,

  509. you're saying,

  510. well,

  511. we're not seeing that.

  512. Again,

  513. I'm not saying it's going to look exactly like the way it's looking in Acts.

  514. At least in this country,

  515. it won't.

  516. For now.

  517. But,

  518. I want to give a couple reasons,

  519. why I don't think we see persecution happen all the time.

  520. And,

  521. the first reason is that there are spiritual forces at work.

  522. So,

  523. like we said earlier,

  524. again,

  525. our struggle is not against flesh and blood,

  526. but it's against these spiritual forces.

  527. And so,

  528. Satan is happy to not persecute us,

  529. if it means that we enjoy our luxuries more than we do share the gospel.

  530. So,

  531. it's a particular challenge that we face in the West.

  532. Because we have all of our comforts,

  533. and we do have these freedoms and these liberties that allow us to not have to worry about gathering this morning and reading the Bible.

  534. But,

  535. Satan doesn't see a need for us to be persecuted if we're already doing what he wants us to do, which is silence.

  536. Which,

  537. if we're not proclaiming the gospel boldly.

  538. And,

  539. again,

  540. comforts are a blessing.

  541. Material things in and of themselves are not evil.

  542. But,

  543. they can be a distraction,

  544. right?

  545. Like,

  546. they can be a distraction from us knowing why we're here,

  547. getting caught up,

  548. getting caught up in everything that is happening in our season of life.

  549. Whether it is,

  550. like,

  551. you're in college.

  552. Like,

  553. things that Satan wants you to focus on,

  554. which is your schoolwork.

  555. And,

  556. making sure that you get through that.

  557. Making sure that you get the grades that you need.

  558. And,

  559. there's so many different stages.

  560. I mean,

  561. that we could kind of go on and on and on about.

  562. But,

  563. I'm just saying that our comforts can be a blessing,

  564. but they can be a distraction.

  565. And,

  566. I think that we can be Christians who are over-medicated by luxury.

  567. Remember,

  568. all who strive to live a godly life will be persecuted.

  569. We will be persecuted.

  570. It'll look differently,

  571. but we will be persecuted.

  572. So,

  573. the first reason we're saying that there's spiritual forces at work.

  574. The second,

  575. and this is also the third reason,

  576. so you're going to have to listen to both.

  577. The second reason is that,

  578. second and third is that,

  579. we either aren't striving to live godly lives,

  580. or,

  581. we aren't people who have God in our lives.

  582. So,

  583. we either aren't striving to live godly lives,

  584. or,

  585. we aren't people who have God in our lives.

  586. So,

  587. I hope that you're catching my heart,

  588. and what I'm saying with that.

  589. So,

  590. I think that,

  591. what's really happened is that we have,

  592. we hear that,

  593. we hear that phrase,

  594. that,

  595. that verse,

  596. all who desire to live a godly life,

  597. will be persecuted.

  598. And,

  599. we've redefined the word godly,

  600. to suit our lifestyles,

  601. to mean something different than what Paul is talking about here.

  602. And remember,

  603. it's two sides of the same coin.

  604. Persecution,

  605. and gospel proclamation.

  606. They go hand in hand.

  607. It's not a cause and effect,

  608. but what we're saying is,

  609. if there is one,

  610. there will be the other.

  611. I'm saying,

  612. yes,

  613. if you share the gospel at work,

  614. it's possible you might get passed over for a promotion.

  615. It's possible that,

  616. if you share the gospel at work,

  617. you might lose your job.

  618. It's possible that,

  619. if you share the gospel with your friends,

  620. that you might face social isolation.

  621. You might get passed over for things.

  622. It's possible that,

  623. you might share the gospel with your classmates,

  624. and suffer for it grade-wise.

  625. It's going to take different forms,

  626. but I'm saying that there is a cost to sharing the gospel.

  627. And when there is gospel proclamation,

  628. there is persecution.

  629. I am saying that it's possible that you could share the gospel,

  630. and not be persecuted,

  631. and not experience hardship.

  632. I'm saying it's possible.

  633. I just don't think that it's likely.

  634. I would be hard,

  635. you would be hard-pressed to find someone who is boldly proclaiming the gospel,

  636. and is not experiencing any problems with that.

  637. And here's the thing.

  638. We will bear fruit.

  639. If we're believers,

  640. and we've been changed,

  641. we will bear fruit.

  642. And to some,

  643. that'll taste like a peach.

  644. But to others,

  645. it'll taste like a lime.

  646. And the gospel will be a cold glass of water

  647. to someone who's in need of refreshing,

  648. and whose soul is weary,

  649. and they're thinking about spiritual things.

  650. It will be a cold glass of water to them.

  651. But to those who have no desire for it,

  652. who reject it,

  653. it will be a glass of vinegar.

  654. It's a polarizing effect.

  655. So what I'm saying is,

  656. if we're seeing little to no polarizing effect with our words,

  657. we're looking less and less like our Lord,

  658. and that should make us pause.

  659. And that should make us wonder

  660. if we actually do know and are communing with God.

  661. That should make us pause.

  662. That should make us ask,

  663. all right, God,

  664. am I desiring to live a godly life

  665. the way that you have defined that in the Bible?

  666. Okay, next thing that we're saying

  667. is that prayers should be made by the church.

  668. We've talked about persecution,

  669. and we're saying,

  670. okay, prayers will be made by the church.

  671. You see that as the response from the church

  672. that this event happens to.

  673. Look at verse 5 and 12.

  674. Verse 5,

  675. So James has been killed.

  676. Peter's thrown in prison,

  677. and he's scheduled to be executed by the end of the day,

  678. and the church is praying in response.

  679. Interestingly enough,

  680. there's one person who's not praying.

  681. Did you notice that?

  682. The guy who's about to die is not praying.

  683. He's, like, sleeping.

  684. And it's like,

  685. I feel like we've been here before.

  686. Something big is about to happen,

  687. and someone should be praying,

  688. and it's always Peter,

  689. and he's sleeping.

  690. It's like,

  691. he either, like,

  692. is the most relaxed guy in the world

  693. who's just not worried.

  694. He's like,

  695. God's sovereign in this,

  696. or that dude just loves him some sleep.

  697. Which I can identify with.

  698. The other interesting thing,

  699. just as a little side note,

  700. do you notice that,

  701. okay,

  702. the church is praying for Peter's release,

  703. but when Peter is actually released,

  704. they're surprised.

  705. Like,

  706. it's either,

  707. again,

  708. they were either surprised,

  709. like,

  710. they didn't think that what was going to happen

  711. was going to happen,

  712. or it didn't happen the way they thought

  713. it was going to happen.

  714. It's like,

  715. it's really,

  716. really odd.

  717. I'm not trying to critique the church too much there,

  718. but it's like,

  719. what?

  720. So,

  721. so Luke,

  722. the author,

  723. he takes significant time

  724. to talk about prayer in the story.

  725. Like,

  726. why,

  727. why did he go so much into this,

  728. why did he go into that story of,

  729. like,

  730. Peter shows up,

  731. the church is praying,

  732. and then the servant girl goes,

  733. and they're like,

  734. and she's like,

  735. hey,

  736. it's Peter.

  737. And they're like,

  738. no,

  739. no,

  740. it's not,

  741. and they keep praying.

  742. Like,

  743. why does,

  744. why does Luke go into that story?

  745. I think he goes into that

  746. to show,

  747. to talk,

  748. to make a significant point

  749. to talk about prayer.

  750. So,

  751. because of that,

  752. I'm saying that we should be praying collectively.

  753. That's what the church is doing in this instance.

  754. So,

  755. individual prayer should be happening,

  756. yes.

  757. But that should already be going on.

  758. And group prayer should be a knee-jerk reaction

  759. like it is here.

  760. And again,

  761. that's why Luke attaches that

  762. to this text.

  763. He's trying to make this point.

  764. They're persecuted.

  765. They're thrown in jail.

  766. Something like,

  767. unjustly,

  768. prayer's happening.

  769. Again,

  770. not mechanically,

  771. but it is a knee-jerk reaction.

  772. And it's important to remember

  773. that God uses man's prayers

  774. as a vehicle,

  775. as a means to accomplish his will.

  776. Does he need us?

  777. No.

  778. He's totally sovereign,

  779. entirely in control,

  780. but he uses our prayers

  781. as a vehicle,

  782. as a means.

  783. If you recall,

  784. Acts 10,

  785. you could flip over one page,

  786. and you could see that in verse 4,

  787. Cornelius,

  788. who's the centurion,

  789. he's praying to God.

  790. Listen to the way

  791. that God describes his prayers.

  792. He says,

  793. Cornelius is praying,

  794. and then this angel appears,

  795. and in verse 4 it says,

  796. and he stared at him in terror,

  797. and he said,

  798. what is it, Lord?

  799. And he said to him,

  800. your prayers and your alms

  801. have ascended

  802. as a memorial before God.

  803. That phrasing,

  804. another version says it's,

  805. your prayers have ascended

  806. as a fragrant offering to God.

  807. So it's like God,

  808. it's like you smelling something

  809. really, really delicious,

  810. and it's like,

  811. oh man,

  812. that gets me going,

  813. I love that.

  814. And that's Cornelius' prayers

  815. in this instance,

  816. and that's what we're saying

  817. with this text,

  818. is that our prayers,

  819. they please God.

  820. Our prayers please God.

  821. God uses them as a means,

  822. and they please him.

  823. But praying collectively

  824. is not a knee-jerk reaction for us,

  825. if we're honest.

  826. I think that individual prayer

  827. sometimes can be,

  828. and that most of us,

  829. our reaction is to pray,

  830. and that's good,

  831. but I don't want to leave out

  832. this piece of collective,

  833. group-wide prayer.

  834. Often it's not a knee-jerk reaction.

  835. The thing is that group-wide prayer,

  836. if you have noticed,

  837. if you are,

  838. is anyone here like a,

  839. like you love to people-watch sometimes,

  840. you love to notice trends

  841. and like the way that people do things

  842. and just the interesting things

  843. that go on during prayer.

  844. Have you noticed that it's awkward sometimes

  845. that we're easily distracted,

  846. and we feel pressure to impress

  847. in our prayers?

  848. It can feel forced, right?

  849. Like our group prayer,

  850. when we say like,

  851. okay, let's get together

  852. and let's pray,

  853. if you've been in your community groups,

  854. like you've probably experienced

  855. some difficulty in group prayer.

  856. Like it doesn't just flow like water,

  857. it's just,

  858. sometimes it's difficult

  859. and it's not as easy

  860. as you would hope it would be.

  861. And I think that reveals something

  862. about our view of God in prayer.

  863. Sometimes we view prayer

  864. as like a ceremony or a ritual

  865. that we have to go about.

  866. There's these certain rules

  867. that make up prayer.

  868. So what I'm talking about

  869. with the people-watching thing,

  870. some things that I thought about,

  871. like the rules that kind of affect prayer,

  872. here are the rules of prayer

  873. that I've noticed.

  874. If you're going to pray,

  875. you must always announce,

  876. all right, let's pray now.

  877. Again, none of these,

  878. I'm not critiquing them

  879. and saying they're really, really terrible.

  880. It's just showing something about like,

  881. I feel like we can all identify

  882. with different rules.

  883. So there's the,

  884. we have to announce

  885. that we have to pray,

  886. that we're going to pray.

  887. It's not like if someone

  888. was sharing something with me

  889. and I was like,

  890. man, that's really, really good.

  891. God, like what do you,

  892. like we want you to accomplish it.

  893. Like we couldn't just go into that necessarily.

  894. It would be like,

  895. okay, like let's all gather together

  896. and let's pray right now.

  897. Sometimes you'll get in that time

  898. where it's like,

  899. if we're going to pray,

  900. we're going to pray to the left

  901. and you're going to pray

  902. for the person to your left

  903. and they're going to pray

  904. and we're going to complete

  905. the circle here.

  906. And then the other thing is,

  907. if you've ever gotten in a situation

  908. where you're in a group

  909. and everyone's prayed

  910. but two people,

  911. it's like this unspoken agreement

  912. between that person and you

  913. that like,

  914. I won't have to pray

  915. if you don't pray

  916. and then we'll wait.

  917. We'll wait this thing out.

  918. We will like go through the storm here

  919. and then someone,

  920. someone else will say amen

  921. and so amen signals

  922. the end of our prayer time.

  923. It's like this unspoken agreement

  924. and it's just like,

  925. that's just human nature.

  926. Like that's okay.

  927. I'm not critiquing it

  928. and saying like that's the worst thing

  929. in the world.

  930. I'm just saying that sometimes,

  931. and I feel like other people

  932. can share more rules

  933. but it seems like there are rules to prayer

  934. which again is,

  935. I think it's reflecting something

  936. about our view of prayer.

  937. We view prayer

  938. as a ritual or a ceremony

  939. with certain rules

  940. rather than commuting

  941. with the Almighty.

  942. Hardly can we say

  943. prayer is a knee-jerk reaction.

  944. When was the last time,

  945. just as a gauge,

  946. when was the last time

  947. we prayed for more than 30 minutes?

  948. When was the last time

  949. that we cried out in prayer

  950. and showed emotion in our prayers?

  951. When was the last time

  952. that we did that?

  953. And I don't want to come down too hard

  954. but I do want to say

  955. I think this is a muscle

  956. that you have to work out.

  957. Just like anything.

  958. Like someone needed to show you

  959. how to read your Bible.

  960. Someone needed to show you

  961. how to share the gospel.

  962. And just like that,

  963. learning how to pray collectively

  964. is not an easy thing

  965. and we need,

  966. it's a muscle

  967. that we have to work out.

  968. So how do we do that?

  969. I have a really complicated plan

  970. for how we do that.

  971. We just start doing it.

  972. It's not something

  973. that we need to overthink.

  974. As you leave here,

  975. like are you praying right now?

  976. As you leave today,

  977. as you go over your meals,

  978. like are you thinking about

  979. how do we pray?

  980. How do we ask God

  981. that He would transform our hearts?

  982. It starts with,

  983. what about the one-on-one encounters?

  984. What about with the

  985. quarter group discipleships?

  986. Like are you making prayer a focus?

  987. I have noticed that

  988. in the times that I've discipled guys,

  989. prayer has not been a focus.

  990. It's been something that we do

  991. at the very, very end of our meeting.

  992. It is not the focus of it.

  993. And I feel like in some ways,

  994. I've failed certain guys

  995. by not showing them

  996. how important prayer is.

  997. By not letting that be a major focus.

  998. I let the content

  999. that we're going through

  1000. be the main focus.

1001. And at the very end,

1002. we have like a quick little prayer.

  1003. But rarely have I

1004. like gotten with these guys

1005. and be like, hey, like,

  1006. let's cry out together.

1007. Let's really labor for the people

1008. that we are praying for

1009. and we want to see changed

  1010. and transformed.

  1011. So it starts there.

1012. It starts in your core groups.

1013. It starts in your community groups.

1014. And it's just something that

  1015. we sometimes,

1016. and this isn't for every case,

1017. but sometimes we have to

1018. act our way into right thinking

1019. rather than think our way

  1020. into right acting.

  1021. And with that,

1022. we should be praying expectantly.

  1023. Right?

  1024. The church, again,

  1025. the thing is that

  1026. they are praying,

  1027. but they,

  1028. it's like there's some disconnect.

  1029. Again, it's either

  1030. they were praying

  1031. and things didn't happen

  1032. the way they thought

1033. they were going to happen

  1034. or they didn't,

1035. or they just didn't think

1036. it was going to happen at all.

  1037. There's something

  1038. that's a little bit off

  1039. in the church here

  1040. in chapter,

  1041. or verse 12 of chapter 12.

1042. So this verse that came to mind

  1043. is James 1, 5.

1044. And if you want to turn there

  1045. real quick,

1046. it'll be one of the last ones

  1047. that you'll turn to.

  1048. So,

  1049. starting in verse 5,

  1050. James is talking about

  1051. praying for wisdom here,

  1052. but the principle

  1053. is still the same.

1054. He says in verse 5,

1055. If any of you lacks wisdom,

  1056. let him ask God

1057. who gives generously to all

  1058. without reproach,

1059. and it will be given him.

1060. But let him ask in faith

  1061. with no doubting,

1062. for the one who doubts

1063. is like a wave of the sea

  1064. that is driven

1065. and tossed by the wind.

  1066. For that person

  1067. must not suppose

  1068. that he will receive

  1069. anything from the Lord.

  1070. He is a double-minded man,

1071. unstable in all his ways.

  1072. So,

1073. James is touching on this point

  1074. of like,

  1075. hey,

1076. not doubting when you pray,

  1077. believing,

  1078. praying expectantly.

  1079. How often is it

1080. that we pray for something,

  1081. whether it's healing

  1082. or a job

  1083. or an opportunity

  1084. to share the gospel,

1085. and then it doesn't happen,

  1086. and it's like

  1087. we're the first ones,

1088. God's like the first one

  1089. that we do blame.

  1090. We're like,

  1091. oh,

  1092. like why,

  1093. or question,

1094. or just get frustrated with,

  1095. like,

  1096. God,

1097. why didn't you do that?

  1098. But,

1099. when God does answer that prayer,

  1100. it's almost like

  1101. we write it off

1102. as like it was going

  1103. to happen anyways.

  1104. Like,

  1105. I mean,

  1106. I interviewed,

  1107. well,

  1108. like I prepared

  1109. for that interview.

  1110. And we're like,

  1111. no,

  1112. like,

  1113. I mean,

  1114. like the doctors knew

  1115. what they were doing.

  1116. They're like,

  1117. they're great doctors.

  1118. And like,

  1119. we thank God,

1120. we like throw up a prayer to God

  1121. and like,

  1122. thank you.

  1123. But it's not like

  1124. it consumes us like,

  1125. oh my gosh,

1126. we prayed that this person

  1127. would be healed

1128. and God used the doctors

  1129. and he was healed.

  1130. Like,

1131. so we were the first ones

  1132. to blame God,

1133. but when he does answer

  1134. our prayers,

  1135. like we often like

  1136. skirt that joy.

  1137. the other thing

  1138. that I thought

  1139. was something

  1140. that we kind of

  1141. might struggle with

  1142. a little bit more

  1143. in the reform camp

1144. and I have to say this

  1145. very,

  1146. very carefully

  1147. and I ask you

  1148. to hear my heart

  1149. in this.

  1150. So,

  1151. we know about

  1152. the sovereignty

  1153. of God.

  1154. We know that God

  1155. is good,

1156. that he doesn't need us,

1157. that he's going to do

1158. what he's going to do

  1159. and that he uses

  1160. our prayers.

  1161. We have a tendency

  1162. to keep ourselves

  1163. from truly praying

  1164. expectantly

  1165. in this way.

  1166. And again,

1167. hear my heart in this.

  1168. I think that

  1169. we know that God

  1170. is not the God

  1171. of the wealth

  1172. and prosperity gospel

  1173. and we know that

  1174. just because he doesn't

1175. give us what we ask

  1176. for in prayer,

  1177. we know that he's

  1178. still good.

  1179. But,

  1180. and we know that

  1181. it's right for Jesus

1182. to pray in the garden,

  1183. hey,

  1184. let this cut past

  1185. before me,

  1186. but your will,

  1187. not my.

  1188. Right?

  1189. So,

  1190. we get that concept

  1191. that Jesus is saying,

  1192. hey,

  1193. I really want this

  1194. to happen,

1195. but it's not my will,

  1196. I'm submitting

  1197. to your will.

  1198. And I think that

  1199. where we hurt ourselves

  1200. when it comes to

  1201. praying expectantly

  1202. is that anytime

1203. that we pray for something,

  1204. again,

  1205. a job interview,

  1206. healing,

  1207. gospel sharing,

1208. we will ask for that

  1209. and then we'll always

  1210. follow that up with,

1211. but if it's your will,

  1212. God,

  1213. like,

  1214. if that's what you

  1215. want to happen,

  1216. then make that happen.

  1217. And,

  1218. again,

  1219. while I'm saying

  1220. that that's right,

  1221. because we're so quick

  1222. to follow it up,

  1223. I think that

  1224. if we're not careful,

1225. it can be a subtle way

  1226. for us to insulate

  1227. ourselves from pain,

  1228. that

  1229. when God doesn't

  1230. answer the prayer

  1231. the way that we

  1232. want him to,

  1233. it's almost like

  1234. we already protected

  1235. ourselves,

  1236. we saw that happening

  1237. two or three steps

  1238. down the line

  1239. and we were like,

1240. but if it's your will

1241. to not let that happen,

1242. then let me be okay

  1243. with it.

  1244. And,

  1245. again,

  1246. I'm not saying

  1247. that's wrong,

  1248. I'm not saying

  1249. that's bad,

  1250. I'm just saying

  1251. it is something

  1252. that can subtly

  1253. keep us from

  1254. praying expectantly.

  1255. It's good and

  1256. biblical to say

  1257. this,

  1258. but while it can

  1259. soften the blow

  1260. of our disappointment,

  1261. it can also

  1262. stifle our praise

  1263. for when God

  1264. does answer

  1265. our prayers.

  1266. Do you see that?

  1267. Like,

  1268. it's super,

  1269. super subtle,

  1270. and I'm not saying

  1271. don't pray for God's

  1272. will to be done,

  1273. I'm just saying

  1274. it's something

  1275. that we need

  1276. to be on guard

  1277. for.

  1278. Like,

  1279. okay,

  1280. when I pray this,

  1281. when I say,

  1282. let your will be

  1283. done,

  1284. am I insulating

  1285. myself from pain

  1286. in case you don't

  1287. give that to me?

  1288. Because I think

  1289. that that hurts us

  1290. again in the way

  1291. that we praise God

  1292. when he does come

  1293. through with those

  1294. things.

  1295. I'm not suggesting

  1296. that we adopt

1297. a name it and claim

  1298. it mentality

  1299. when it comes to

  1300. prayer,

  1301. that's not what

  1302. I'm suggesting.

  1303. I'm saying that

  1304. we pray expectantly

  1305. knowing that God

  1306. hears.

  1307. We don't need to

  1308. pray harder,

  1309. you don't need to

  1310. pray louder.

  1311. We pray expectantly

  1312. knowing that,

  1313. we pray expectantly

  1314. so that our praise

  1315. or our hurt

  1316. are not stifled.

  1317. We let God

  1318. work through that.

  1319. Even in the painful

  1320. moments,

  1321. we still let God

  1322. work through that.

  1323. We still wrestle

  1324. through that.

  1325. We don't numb

  1326. ourselves so that

  1327. it doesn't hurt

  1328. as bad.

  1329. So let's pray

  1330. expecting God

  1331. to work in power

  1332. because power

  1333. will be displayed

  1334. by God

  1335. for his church.

  1336. So this is my

  1337. kind of last

  1338. and final point

  1339. is that power

  1340. will be displayed

  1341. by God

  1342. for his church.

  1343. How?

  1344. We're saying it's

  1345. for God's purposes.

  1346. There is this

  1347. interesting detail

  1348. where James is killed

  1349. but not Peter.

  1350. There's much rejoicing

  1351. over the fact

  1352. that Peter

  1353. is released

  1354. miraculously

  1355. but that miracle

  1356. didn't come to James

  1357. and God saw that

  1358. it was good

  1359. for that to happen.

  1360. There were different

  1361. outcomes

  1362. for different men.

  1363. One got to come

  1364. home and one didn't.

  1365. But God is good

  1366. in both situations.

  1367. God is glorified

  1368. in the martyrdom

  1369. of James

  1370. and in the release

  1371. of Peter.

  1372. Could he have

  1373. released James?

  1374. Absolutely.

  1375. 100%.

  1376. Like none of us

  1377. are doubting that.

  1378. God uses it

  1379. for his purposes.

  1380. We see that

  1381. Peter's released.

  1382. He encourages

  1383. the church.

  1384. He reminds them

  1385. of God's sovereignty

  1386. and God's

  1387. continued plan

  1388. to use Peter

  1389. to advance

  1390. the gospel.

  1391. And the other

  1392. thing that's great

  1393. about God's power

  1394. being displayed

  1395. by God

  1396. for his church

  1397. is that God

  1398. does this

  1399. because of us

  1400. but also

  1401. in spite of us.

  1402. So,

  1403. their prayers,

  1404. God uses those prayers.

  1405. Those are

  1406. the means,

  1407. the vehicle

  1408. that God

  1409. accomplishes

  1410. his purposes.

  1411. But,

  1412. Peter's sleeping

  1413. and the church

  1414. isn't praying

  1415. completely expectantly.

1416. You know what I mean?

  1417. Like those are the

  1418. two things

  1419. that are a little

  1420. off about the situation

  1421. but God still

  1422. answers their prayers.

  1423. So,

  1424. God works

  1425. because of our prayers

  1426. but also in spite

  1427. of our prayers.

  1428. Like he does,

  1429. he is sovereign,

  1430. he is good.

  1431. He doesn't need

  1432. our prayers

  1433. but he invites us

  1434. in to have

  1435. them be the means,

  1436. that vehicle

  1437. that drives his will.

  1438. And then this is

  1439. the why.

  1440. Why does God

  1441. use his power

  1442. to be displayed

  1443. for the church?

  1444. This is

  1445. the biggest point,

  1446. guys.

  1447. God is entirely

  1448. devoted to

  1449. the advancing

  1450. of the gospel.

  1451. He is relentless

  1452. in it.

  1453. Nothing

  1454. will keep

  1455. the gospel

  1456. from being advanced.

  1457. Okay,

  1458. the miracle

  1459. is awesome

  1460. but there's

  1461. a bigger purpose

  1462. to it

  1463. and I don't want

  1464. to say

  1465. don't pay attention

  1466. to the miracle

  1467. because just stop

1468. and think for a second

  1469. like the insanity

  1470. of this miracle.

  1471. The fact that

  1472. Peter is guarding,

  1473. so what would have

  1474. happened is

  1475. he has a

  1476. chain around

  1477. one leg

  1478. and a chain

  1479. around the other

  1480. and those are

  1481. both connected

  1482. to guards

  1483. and there are

  1484. two guards

  1485. guarding the doors

  1486. and there's

  1487. four of these

  1488. four man groups

  1489. and they take

  1490. different shifts.

  1491. So it's like

  1492. you would think

  1493. that they were

  1494. guarding the most

  1495. valuable man

  1496. in the world

  1497. or the most

  1498. violent man

  1499. in the world

  1500. but they're

  1501. guarding Peter

  1502. who's done

  1503. no violence.

  1504. It's an odd

  1505. thing but

  1506. nevertheless

  1507. it's almost

  1508. it's almost

  1509. like God

  1510. uses that

  1511. uses man's

  1512. attempts

  1513. to prevent

  1514. Peter from

  1515. escaping

  1516. just to show

  1517. how big

  1518. and powerful

  1519. God is.

  1520. Nothing

  1521. stands in

  1522. God's way.

  1523. He suspends

  1524. his own

  1525. laws of

  1526. physics.

  1527. The laws

  1528. that he

  1529. created

  1530. he suspends

  1531. them.

  1532. He says

  1533. you will not

  1534. hold this man

  1535. any longer

  1536. and the chains

  1537. fall off of him.

  1538. He shines

  1539. this light

  1540. in the cell

  1541. and it wakes

  1542. up Peter

  1543. after touching

  1544. him

  1545. but not

  1546. the guards.

  1547. He walks

  1548. through the gate

  1549. the gate

  1550. opens for him

  1551. he walks

  1552. out of the city.

  1553. Like this

  1554. is a big deal

  1555. like God

  1556. suspends

  1557. all of these

  1558. things

  1559. all these

  1560. things

  1561. that would

  1562. be impossible

  1563. for the sake

  1564. of God

  1565. building up

  1566. his church

  1567. and advancing

  1568. the gospel.

  1569. That is the

  1570. point of this

  1571. miracle here.

  1572. It's not

  1573. just to say

  1574. oh that was

  1575. super cool

  1576. and I think

  1577. that God's

  1578. neat

  1579. and isn't

  1580. he powerful

  1581. no it's

  1582. to say God's

  1583. relentless

  1584. in his pursuit

  1585. of the gospel

  1586. and he will

  1587. accomplish it

  1588. and he's

  1589. using Peter.

  1590. The physical

  1591. properties

  1592. bend their

  1593. knees

  1594. to God's

  1595. purposes.

  1596. God is

  1597. entirely

  1598. about

  1599. the

  1600. proclamation

  1601. of the gospel

  1602. entirely.

  1603. So in

  1604. closing thoughts

  1605. I believe

  1606. that Luke

  1607. wrote this

  1608. text

  1609. to encourage

  1610. the church

  1611. to remain

  1612. steadfast

  1613. steadfast

  1614. under persecution

  1615. steadfast

  1616. in prayer

  1617. because of

  1618. our belief

  1619. in God's

  1620. power.

  1621. Steadfast

  1622. in prayer

  1623. that we'll

  1624. believe that

  1625. God will

  1626. hear our

  1627. prayers

  1628. and he

  1629. will

  1630. accomplish

  1631. his will.

  1632. And it's

  1633. easy to look

  1634. inward

  1635. I believe

  1636. it's easy

  1637. to look

  1638. inward

  1639. and be a

  1640. little bit

  1641. discouraged

  1642. or maybe

  1643. be discouraged

  1644. or maybe see

  1645. this as an

  1646. indictment

  1647. on our

  1648. lack of

  1649. prayer

  1650. or our

  1651. lack of

  1652. belief

  1653. sometimes

  1654. or our

  1655. lack to

  1656. proclaim

  1657. the gospel

  1658. when we

  1659. really need

  1660. to

  1661. because we're

  1662. afraid of

  1663. uncomfortable

  1664. situations

  1665. because

  1666. a million

  1667. different

  1668. reasons

  1669. it's easy

  1670. to look

  1671. in that

  1672. and especially

  1673. for myself

  1674. I know

  1675. that I

  1676. fail so

  1677. much of

  1678. this

  1679. like I

  1680. am not

  1681. the greatest

  1682. of this

  1683. I'm in

  1684. that group

  1685. I'm in

  1686. that camp

  1687. where I'm

  1688. saying guys

  1689. I've

  1690. redefined

  1691. godliness

  1692. to mean

  1693. something

  1694. different

  1695. to mean

  1696. something more

  1697. palatable

  1698. for me

  1699. something

  1700. that's a

  1701. little bit

  1702. more

  1703. comfortable

  1704. for me

  1705. so that

  1706. I can

  1707. still say

  1708. that I

  1709. am my

  1710. own

  1711. instead

  1712. of saying

  1713. I'm

  1714. gods

  1715. and I'm

  1716. bought

  1717. with a

  1718. price

  1719. and it's

  1720. no longer

  1721. me

  1722. but it's

  1723. Christ

  1724. like I

  1725. want to

  1726. avoid

  1727. that

  1728. and I

  1729. fail at

  1730. this

  1731. so please

  1732. please

  1733. hear me

  1734. but

  1735. in that

  1736. even though

  1737. it's easy

  1738. to be

  1739. discouraged

  1740. the message

  1741. is not

  1742. try harder

  1743. the message

  1744. is not

  1745. pray louder

  1746. pray more

  1747. or that

  1748. you need to

  1749. believe more

  1750. or that

  1751. your faith

  1752. is little

  1753. that's not

  1754. the message

  1755. that we're

  1756. saying

  1757. it would

  1758. be a

  1759. travesty

  1760. to believe

  1761. that

  1762. to get

  1763. that out

  1764. of this

  1765. message

  1766. that okay

  1767. we need

  1768. to go

  1769. home

  1770. we need

  1771. to pray

  1772. more

  1773. and we need

  1774. to be

  1775. more godly

  1776. and we need

  1777. to share

  1778. the gospel

  1779. more

  1780. and like

  1781. hoo-ha-hoo

  1782. let's go

  1783. like that's

  1784. not the

  1785. message

  1786. and it

  1787. would be

  1788. like a

  1789. travesty

  1790. for us

  1791. to go

  1792. in that

  1793. direction

  1794. instead

  1795. what we're

  1796. saying

  1797. is that

  1798. god's

  1799. power

  1800. his

  1801. message

  1802. centers

  1803. on

  1804. himself

  1805. nothing

  1806. will

  1807. stand

  1808. in god's

  1809. will

  1810. nothing

  1811. will

  1812. stand

  1813. in god's

  1814. way

  1815. of the

  1816. gospel

  1817. and that's

  1818. not dependent

  1819. upon us

  1820. at all

  1821. it's not

  1822. dependent

  1823. upon how

  1824. good we

  1825. are

  1826. but

  1827. god

  1828. invites

  1829. us

  1830. to be

  1831. a part

  1832. of that

  1833. so here's

  1834. what i'm

  1835. saying that

  1836. the messages

  1837. of this

  1838. to you

  1839. that we

  1840. go home

  1841. with this

  1842. is that

  1843. remind

  1844. yourself

  1845. of that

  1846. daily

  1847. remind

  1848. yourself

  1849. of that

  1850. right now

  1851. remind

  1852. yourself

  1853. of that

  1854. as we're

  1855. about to

  1856. take the

  1857. lord's

  1858. supper

  1859. remind

  1860. yourself

  1861. of what

  1862. christ

  1863. has done

  1864. for us

  1865. and how

  1866. god

  1867. has

  1868. redeemed

  1869. us

  1870. from

  1871. darkness

  1872. and

  1873. taken

  1874. us

  1875. into

  1876. light

  1877. and

  1878. jesus

  1879. is

  1880. our

  1881. master

  1882. and

  1883. we

  1884. are

  1885. formed

  1886. the

  1887. world

  1888. that's

  1889. what

  1890. we

  1891. remind

  1892. !

  1893. ourselves

  1894. of

  1895. !

  1896. not

  1897. try

  1898. harder

  1899. you need

  1900. to pray

  1901. more

  1902. you need

  1903. to believe

  1904. more

  1905. it's

  1906. believing

  1907. that god

  1908. will accomplish

  1909. his purposes

  1910. and reminding

  1911. ourselves

  1912. of that

  1913. and then

  1914. reminding

  1915. each other

  1916. of that

  1917. in your

  1918. core

  1919. groups

  1920. reminding

  1921. each other

  1922. of that

  1923. in your

  1924. community

  1925. groups

  1926. that god

  1927. is relentless

  1928. about his

  1929. pursuit of the

  1930. gospel

  1931. and he

  1932. uses us

  1933. and we

  1934. get to be

  1935. a part

  1936. of that

  1937. that

  1938. is what

  1939. i want

  1940. us to hear

  1941. out of this

  1942. i want

  1943. us to hear

  1944. that

  1945. god

  1946. invites

  1947. our

  1948. prayers

  1949. in

  1950. persecution

  1951. will

  1952. come

  1953. and it

  1954. should

  1955. come

  1956. if

  1957. there's

  1958. gospel

  1959. proclamation

  1960. there's

  1961. going to

  1962. be

  1963. persecution

  1964. but it's

  1965. all

  1966. relying

  1967. on

  1968. it's

  1969. all

  1970. hinging

  1971. on

  1972. god's

  1973. power

  1974. believing

  1975. that god

  1976. will

  1977. accomplish

  1978. what

  1979. he

  1980. desires

  1981. to

  1982. accomplish

  1983. let's

  1984. pray
