  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of Acts, chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  2. Acts, chapter 13. It's good to be back with you today.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  3. If you were here with us last Sunday, you know that I had a bit of a stomach flu and was out.

  4. Or maybe you didn't know I had a stomach flu, but I had a stomach flu and was out.

  5. And it's good to be with you, both not to be doing what I was doing last Sunday morning,

  6. and to be here to open God's Word and to consider its truth to us this morning.

  7. Our text for today is Acts 13, verses 4 through 12.

    Acts 13:4–12

  8. But there are a few things I think need to be noted from the beginning of Acts 13,

  9. and so we're going to look at and read together verses 1 through 12.

  10. And we've come to a fairly pivotal place in the book of Acts,

  11. transitioning from the gospel being proclaimed primarily in Jerusalem,

  12. and it moving outward from this place.

  13. The story is going, its main character being Peter is kind of setting,

  14. and its main character being Paul is rising.

  15. And it's where we find ourselves in a couple of chapters here,

  16. this action that's taking place.

  17. And at the beginning of chapter 13, into verse 4,

  18. we see Barnabas and Paul commissioned for the very first missionary journey.

  19. And so we read, beginning in verse 1,

  20. Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers,

  21. Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger,

  22. Lucius of Cyrene,

  23. Menaion, a lifelong friend of Herod the Tetrarch,

  24. and Saul.

  25. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting,

  26. the Holy Spirit said,

  27. Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.

  28. Then after fasting and praying,

  29. they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

  30. So being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  31. they went down to Seleucia,

  32. and from there sailed to Cyprus.

  33. When they arrived at Salamis,

  34. they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews,

  35. and they had John to assist them.

  36. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos,

  37. they came upon a certain magician,

  38. a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

  39. He was with the proconsul,

  40. Sergius Paulus,

  41. a man of intelligence,

  42. who summoned Barnabas and Saul

  43. and sought to hear the word of God.

  44. But Elimas the magician,

  45. for that is the meaning of his name,

  46. opposed them,

  47. seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

  48. But Saul,

  49. who was also called Paul,

  50. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  51. looked intently at him and said,

  52. You son of the devil,

  53. you enemy of all righteousness,

  54. full of all deceit and villainy,

  55. will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?

  56. And now behold,

  57. the hand of the Lord is upon you,

  58. and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.

  59. Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him,

  60. and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.

  61. Then the proconsul believed,

  62. when he saw what had occurred,

  63. for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

  64. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  65. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  66. We would all do well to listen to it

  67. in order to believe its promises

  68. and obey its commands.

  69. Now before we get into the story itself,

  70. let's get to the stage just a little bit.

  71. And maybe you're not like me,

  72. but I'm a very visual learner,

  73. and so I like to understand where they are

  74. and where they're traveling from

  75. and where they're traveling to.

  76. So we'll see if we can pull this off

  77. and get a map up on the screen for you there.

  78. I did do that for my iPad, if you're wondering,

  79. which is pretty amazing.

  80. So they are currently in Antioch, right?

  81. We see the church forming at the end of chapter 11 in Antioch.

  82. The gospel has gone forward because of a dispersion,

  83. because of the persecution that's arisen in Jerusalem.

  84. So the gospel has gone out.

  85. People have gone about gossiping the word of God.

  86. We see at the last part of chapter 11

  87. that primarily the gospel is being preached to Jews.

  88. But here in chapter 11,

  89. we see that some disciples begin to preach the gospel to Gentiles,

  90. and this church in Antioch is formed.

  91. Now Antioch is about 300 miles north of Jerusalem.

  92. Now you can see it way over on the far right-hand side of the screen there.

  93. Yes, I'm doing that for my iPad.

  94. Isn't that fun?

  95. So they're in Antioch, the church in Antioch.

  96. You recall that Barnabas, needing some help,

  97. went and found Paul, brought Paul with him,

  98. and they remained in Antioch,

  99. and they're teaching in Antioch right at the end of chapter 11.

  100. So they travel from Antioch to Seleucia,

  101. about 16 miles, right?

  102. And go down from Antioch to Seleucia,

  103. to the coast about 16 miles,

  104. and they sail to Salamis on the island of Cyprus.

  105. Now Cyprus is where Barnabas is from.

  106. We find that out in Acts 4, verse 36.

    Acts 4:36

  107. Barnabas' name is Joseph,

  108. but he's also called Barnabas the son of encouragement by the church.

  109. And so Paul and Barnabas are commissioned to go back to Barnabas' hometown.

  110. They land on Salamis about 130 miles from Seleucia to Salamis,

  111. this journey in the Mediterranean.

  112. They land on Salamis,

  113. and they travel all over the island of Cyprus,

  114. what the text tells us.

  115. So they go all about the island of Cyprus.

  116. Exactly what that looks like, I don't know,

  117. but it's definitely not a straight arrow from Salamis to Paphos, right?

  118. They're traveling all about the island of Cyprus

  119. until they arrive at Paphos.

  120. Paphos is the capital of Cyprus,

  121. and there we see in our text that the gospel is preached to the proconsul,

  122. which would have been like the governor,

  123. the Roman appointed governor of the island of Cyprus.

  124. So he's the ruler of Cyprus,

  125. and he's located in this coastal city of Paphos.

  126. Now Cyprus in this day was an incredibly corrupt place.

  127. It was a vile place,

  128. and this is a common theme in the history of the world.

  129. Places that the gospel goes or places that need the gospel.

  130. It was the place in Paphos,

  131. the temple for the worship of Venus existed there.

  132. The Roman Greek god of love was here.

  133. Lots of temple worship,

  134. prostitutes,

  135. a vile, vile place

  136. where they go for this very first time

  137. in their missionary journey

  138. to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  139. Now, there is so much that can be said of this morning's text.

  140. But I want to set our minds on just one thing this morning,

  141. which we'll consider with three supporting points.

  142. But just one primary thing that we need to consider

  143. in order to warm our hearts this morning.

  144. Note from Luke's account of Barnabas and Saul

  145. on the island of Cyprus,

  146. God's pursuit of his praise.

  147. This is the thing.

  148. This is what I want to focus our attention on this morning from our text.

  149. God's pursuit of God's praise.

  150. Now, this runs thematically all throughout the Scripture.

  151. In fact, we could spend weeks upon weeks

  152. showing you systematically

  153. that God is zealous for his own glory,

  154. for his own worship,

  155. for people to pay attention to him,

  156. to know him and know him for who he is

  157. and exalt him for who he is.

  158. This is what it means for him to seek his praise.

  159. And for us as humans,

  160. I think very readily we can say,

  161. but isn't it wrong to be self-centered?

  162. And as humans, absolutely yes.

  163. But you are not God.

  164. It is right and proper that God seeks his own praise.

  165. God is the most glorious,

  166. the most wonderful thing that we could possibly possess.

  167. And if God were to say,

  168. no, no, don't look at me.

  169. Pay attention to the creation around you.

  170. If he were to veil himself as the creator,

  171. it would be unloving toward us.

  172. It would be ungracious toward us.

  173. We need to behold God.

  174. So he is zealous for his own praise.

  175. In 1 Peter 2, verse 9,

    1 Peter 2:9

  176. Peter writes to those who are the elect exiles

  177. of the dispersion,

  178. going out of the gospel of Christ

  179. because of persecution,

  180. in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia,

  181. and Bithynia, verse 9,

  182. he writes,

  183. You are a chosen race,

  184. a royal priesthood,

  185. a holy nation,

  186. a people for his own possession.

  187. So you are a people set apart, right?

  188. For what purpose?

  189. Verse 9 tells us

  190. that you may proclaim

  191. the excellencies of him

  192. who called you out of darkness

  193. into his marvelous light.

  194. Because of the reality,

  195. the saving grace of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  196. you have been set apart

  197. that you might proclaim

  198. the excellencies of him

  199. who saved you in this way.

  200. It is the work of the church

  201. of Jesus Christ

  202. to make God known.

  203. One Old Testament reference

  204. in Ezekiel 36, verses 22 and 23.

    Ezekiel 36:22

  205. God tells Israel

  206. that the reason that he will deliver them

  207. from captivity,

  208. from their exile in Babylon

  209. and later Persia,

  210. is for the sake of the praise of his name.

  211. Listen to the language very carefully

  212. what he says.

  213. God speaks to Israel

  214. through the prophet Ezekiel.

  215. Therefore, say to the house of Israel,

  216. Thus says the Lord God,

  217. It is not for your sake,

  218. O house of Israel,

  219. that I am about to act,

  220. but for the sake of my holy name.

  221. So I'm going to bring you back from exile.

  222. I'm going to deliver you from captivity.

  223. But it's really not for your sake.

  224. It's for my sake.

  225. It's for the sake of my holy name,

  226. which you have profaned

  227. among the nations to which you came.

  228. And I will vindicate the holiness

  229. of my great name,

  230. which has been profaned among the nations,

  231. and which you have profaned among them.

  232. And the nations will know

  233. that I am the Lord,

  234. declares the Lord God,

  235. when through you

  236. I vindicate my holiness

  237. before their eyes.

  238. Because of my goodness to you,

  239. my name will be made known.

  240. So God pursues His own praise.

  241. He is zealous for it.

  242. And we see that in our text, right?

  243. Well, the focus can often be

  244. simply about Paul and Barnabas

  245. and their helper,

  246. John Mark, we see in verse 5.

  247. But Paul and Barnabas in verse 4

  248. are sent out by whom?

  249. God.

  250. By the work of the Holy Spirit.

  251. In verse 9,

  252. we see Paul with this scathing indictment

  253. of Elimus the magician.

  254. He's filled with whom?

  255. The Holy Spirit.

  256. Verse 11,

  257. he tells Elimus

  258. that the hand of the Lord

  259. is upon him.

  260. Right?

  261. And God blinds Elimus.

  262. The point is

  263. that it's ultimately

  264. and it's finally

  265. God's pursuit.

  266. It is His purpose in the world.

  267. It is His ministry

  268. that He would be known

  269. and worshipped.

  270. So as we set our minds

  271. on the glorious reality,

  272. that God is zealous for His praise,

  273. we'll do so with three points

  274. concerning God's pursuit.

  275. Number one,

  276. and I'll run back through these,

  277. but number one,

  278. the beneficiaries

  279. of God's pursuit

  280. of His praise.

  281. Number two,

  282. the means of God's pursuit

  283. of His praise.

  284. And number three,

  285. the persistence

  286. of God's pursuit

  287. of His praise.

  288. So number one,

  289. the beneficiaries

  290. of God's pursuit

  291. of His praise.

  292. Beloved,

  293. the gospel is not

  294. man-centered.

  295. It is altogether

  296. God-centered.

  297. But aren't we

  298. the great beneficiaries

  299. of that pursuit?

  300. Isn't it wonderful

  301. that as God calls

  302. attention to Himself,

  303. He does so

  304. by the redemption

  305. of a people.

  306. And we are those people.

  307. How wonderful

  308. that we get to be

  309. the wonderful side product

  310. of what God is doing

  311. to make His name known.

  312. So the beneficiaries,

  313. namely,

  314. the church.

  315. Paul,

  316. Barnabas,

  317. and John Mark

  318. as a helper

  319. are sent to carry

  320. the Word of God

  321. to whom?

  322. To the people

  323. of God.

  324. They go to an island

  325. called Cyprus

  326. to call together

  327. God's people

  328. for the praise

  329. of His name.

  330. Can we know

  331. from this text

  332. that the Cyprus

  333. and that is the

  334. correct use,

  335. I looked it up,

  336. responded favorably

  337. to the proclamation

  338. of the gospel?

  339. Can we know

  340. that the Cyprus

  341. responded favorably

  342. to the proclamation

  343. of the gospel?

  344. We know one did

  345. for sure

  346. from our text

  347. this morning,

  348. the proconsul.

  349. We know for a fact

  350. that he did.

  351. In fact,

  352. Sergius Paulus

  353. believed.

  354. He was astonished

  355. at the teaching

  356. of the Lord.

  357. But can we know

  358. from the text?

  359. We can't.

  360. But there is a place

  361. that we can know from.

  362. So turn a couple pages

  363. over to Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  364. We don't know the number,

  365. but we can know

  366. that there was

  367. a favorable response

  368. to the gospel

  369. because of this passage.

  370. Beginning in verse 36,

  371. Acts 15,

    Acts 15:36

  372. verse 36.

  373. And after some days,

  374. Paul said to Barnabas,

  375. Let us return

  376. and visit the brothers

  377. in every city

  378. where we proclaim

  379. the word of the Lord

  380. and see how they are.

  381. So there's the premise.

  382. We need to go on a journey.

  383. We need to go back

  384. and visit those

  385. who believed

  386. in the cities.

  387. Let's see how they're doing.

  388. Let's go back around

  389. and let's visit.

  390. Now,

  391. Barnabas agrees.

  392. We don't see that

  393. in Luke's record,

  394. but he says,

  395. verse 37,

  396. Now Barnabas

  397. wanted to take with them,

  398. so he agrees,

  399. let's go,

  400. John called Mark.

  401. Verse 38,

  402. But Paul thought best

  403. not to take with them

  404. one who had withdrawn

  405. from them in Pamphylia

  406. and had not gone with them

  407. to the work.

  408. Now,

  409. just to give you some frame,

  410. we're going to talk about this

  411. in some coming weeks,

  412. but John Mark,

  413. after they left the island,

  414. he got scared

  415. and he turned around

  416. and he ran.

  417. He went back to Jerusalem.

  418. So Paul and Barnabas

  419. get in a fight over this,

  420. right?

  421. Paul doesn't want to take

  422. John Mark,

  423. the coward,

  424. with him,

  425. and Barnabas,

  426. who's his cousin,

  427. still wants to take.

  428. He's ready to give him

  429. a second chance

  430. at this point.

  431. This is this division

  432. that happens.

  433. Acts 13,

  434. 13 records this.

  435. Now Paul and his companions

  436. set sail from Paphos

  437. and came to Perga

  438. in Pamphylia,

  439. and John left them

  440. and returned

  441. to Jerusalem.

  442. Right?

  443. Verse 39 of Acts 15,

  444. And there arose

  445. a sharp disagreement

  446. that they separated

  447. from each other.

  448. Barnabas took Mark,

  449. this is John Mark,

  450. Barnabas took Mark

  451. with him

  452. and sailed away

  453. to where?

  454. to Cyprus.

  455. But Paul chose Silas

  456. and departed,

  457. having been commended

  458. by the brothers

  459. to the grace of the Lord,

  460. and he went through Syria

  461. and Cilicia,

  462. strengthening the churches.

  463. Okay?

  464. So they go separate ways,

  465. but the very premise

  466. of what they're going

  467. to go do,

  468. right?

  469. They've agreed together,

  470. we need to go back

  471. to the cities

  472. where we preach the gospel

  473. and people responded

  474. to the gospel,

  475. and let's see how they're doing.

  476. They go separate ways.

  477. Barnabas goes back

  478. to Cyprus.

  479. Not home to lounge,

  480. but to check on the brothers

  481. to see how,

  482. in fact,

  483. they're doing.

  484. So people did respond favorably

  485. as they've traveled

  486. throughout the island

  487. to the grace of God

  488. in the gospel

  489. of Jesus Christ.

  490. Right?

  491. And this is

  492. the wonderful reality

  493. of God's pursuit

  494. of his own praise,

  495. that there are beneficiaries

  496. of that pursuit,

  497. namely,

  498. the church.

  499. So we can see

  500. the beneficiaries

  501. of God's pursuit

  502. of his praise

  503. in our text this morning.

  504. Secondly,

  505. let's look at the means

  506. of God's pursuit

  507. of his praise.

  508. God is pursuing

  509. his praise.

  510. How does he do it?

  511. How does he do it?

  512. First,

  513. with his people.

  514. God pursues

  515. his praise

  516. with his people.

  517. God uses his people

  518. to proclaim

  519. the gospel message

  520. to his people.

  521. Verse 4,

  522. So being sent out

  523. by the Holy Spirit,

  524. they went,

  525. verse 5,

  526. and proclaimed

  527. the word

  528. of God.

  529. Now,

  530. I think it's important,

  531. I think it's helpful

  532. to note

  533. the timeline here

  534. of the early church.

  535. The year

  536. that Barnabas

  537. and Saul

  538. slash Paul

  539. are sent to Cyprus

  540. is A.D. 47.

  541. And we can know that

  542. because of the death

  543. of Herod in chapter 12.

  544. This is a historical fact

  545. that we know.

  546. So it's A.D. 47.

  547. Now,

  548. exactly the time frame

  549. since the resurrection

  550. of Christ,

  551. we can't be completely

  552. sure of.

  553. There's much debate

  554. out there about it.

  555. The range would be

  556. between 14

  557. and 20 years.

  558. I think that's what

  559. you've got to wrap

  560. your mind around

  561. is that it's been

  562. some time

  563. since Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  564. to Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  565. We didn't just speed

  566. through six months.

  567. It's been quite an

  568. expanse of time,

  569. the building of the church

  570. in this region

  571. and then beyond.

  572. Between 14

  573. and 20 years,

  574. there's a lot of debate

  575. about when Jesus died.

  576. It ranges from

  577. A.D. 27

  578. to A.D. 33.

  579. Now,

  580. I'm going to argue

  581. for 14 years,

  582. but I'm not going

  583. to this morning.

  584. I'm going to suggest

  585. that Jesus was crucified

  586. in A.D. 33,

  587. but it doesn't really matter

  588. this morning

  589. or maybe at all.

  590. the point being

  591. that a big bunch

  592. of time

  593. has gone by.

  594. The church in Antioch

  595. has existed

  596. for at least

  597. a year.

  598. There's been

  599. a period of time

  600. that they have been,

  601. Barnabas and Saul

  602. have been with them.

  603. Remember Barnabas

  604. and Saul in chapter 12

  605. are sent back

  606. to Jerusalem

  607. and the picture

  608. in Luke's narrative

  609. jumps back

  610. to Jerusalem as well.

  611. So they've been there

  612. and they've now returned

  613. back to Antioch.

  614. And notice

  615. what they're doing

  616. in the meantime.

  617. So not yet commissioned.

  618. Saul has been in Tarsus.

  619. Barnabas goes and gets them.

  620. They go to the church

  621. in Antioch.

  622. They remain with them.

  623. They're teaching them.

  624. They take this trip

  625. to Jerusalem

  626. to deliver some

  627. financial support there.

  628. They're back in Antioch.

  629. And what are they doing

  630. in verse 2?

  631. They're worshiping

  632. the Lord

  633. and they're fasting.

  634. They're gathered together

  635. as the church

  636. in fellowship

  637. together.

  638. They're about the work

  639. of Christian ministry

  640. where they are.

  641. And while they're doing this

  642. the Holy Spirit says

  643. they're together

  644. remember

  645. set apart for me

  646. Barnabas

  647. and Saul

  648. for the work

  649. to which

  650. I have called them.

  651. So there is a calling.

  652. In this case

  653. it's an audible calling.

  654. The Spirit speaks to them.

  655. We don't know exactly

  656. how He does so.

  657. but Luke records it

  658. as audible

  659. speaking to them.

  660. I want you to see

  661. that Paul

  662. and Barnabas

  663. did not have

  664. individual experiences.

  665. They didn't come off

  666. a hill

  667. and report to the church

  668. we feel called

  669. to missions.

  670. The church is together

  671. and they confirm

  672. together

  673. that the Spirit of God

  674. commissioned

  675. Paul and Barnabas

  676. to go to the island

  677. of Cyprus.

  678. What do they do?

  679. Verse 3

  680. they continue fasting

  681. and they pray

  682. and they lay their hands

  683. on them

  684. and they send them off.

  685. They're sent out

  686. by the local church.

  687. It grieves me today

  688. that there's so much

  689. personal experience

  690. in Christianity.

  691. There's so much

  692. feeling called

  693. to a particular thing

  694. without any examination.

  695. There are so many

  696. young people

  697. who want to do

  698. world missions

  699. who don't do

  700. mission at home.

  701. You're not reaching

  702. people here

  703. you will not reach

  704. people in China

  705. or India

  706. or wherever.

  707. Because you know what?

  708. Stuff's harder over there.

  709. You have to do

  710. laundry

  711. by hand.

  712. It's not all romantic.

  713. You still have to go

  714. live your life

  715. and if you're not

  716. willing to pour it out

  717. for the sake of Christ

  718. where you are

  719. with your roommates

  720. and your co-workers

  721. and your classmates

  722. you won't do it.

  723. Abroad.

  724. It starts

  725. now

  726. on your bulletin.

  727. Before I read that

  728. I've heard a lot

  729. in churches

  730. that we all have

  731. a responsibility

  732. to mission.

  733. You're either to go

  734. or you're to send.

  735. And I get the call.

  736. It's a foreign mission call.

  737. I get that.

  738. I get that.

  739. But I don't like

  740. the notion

  741. of labeling people

  742. missionary

  743. because it seems

  744. to suggest

  745. that everyone else

  746. is not.

  747. I love this Spurgeon quote.

  748. Every Christian here

  749. is either a missionary

  750. or an imposter.

  751. God uses

  752. in the pursuit

  753. of His praise

  754. His people.

  755. And beloved,

  756. if we are zealous

  757. for the praise of God

  758. as He is,

  759. as we should be

  760. because of His work

  761. for us

  762. in Christ,

  763. we should want to go.

  764. It should be

  765. the driving passion

  766. of our lives

  767. to make Him known,

  768. to have other people

  769. experience

  770. the goodness of God

  771. in the personal work

  772. of Jesus Christ.

  773. He uses His people.

  774. He'll use you

  775. if you'll avail yourself

  776. to that.

  777. He also uses His Word.

  778. What did Barnabas

  779. and Paul

  780. and John Mark do

  781. when they arrived

  782. on Cyprus?

  783. They did not put on plays.

  784. They didn't come up

  785. with lots of clever analogy.

  786. They proclaimed

  787. the Word of God.

  788. They preached God

  789. as good creator

  790. and sustainer

  791. of the universe.

  792. They preached sin,

  793. death,

  794. and eternal judgment.

  795. They preached the life,

  796. death,

  797. and resurrection

  798. of Jesus Christ.

  799. God's people

  800. are saved

  801. by hearing

  802. the Word of God.

  803. And I don't simply mean

  804. reading the text.

  805. Although I would

  806. strongly suggest

  807. that that's a great place

  808. to start.

  809. We can story

  810. the Word of God too.

  811. We can explain

  812. the Word of God

  813. to people.

  814. We can tell

  815. this big, big, big story.

  816. Some of you may have

  817. come to faith

  818. not by the actual text

  819. being read,

  820. but by somebody

  821. telling you

  822. the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  823. Just simply sharing

  824. with you

  825. that story.

  826. Provided it is

  827. founded in the truth,

  828. it has

  829. saving power.

  830. So God's people

  831. are saved

  832. by hearing

  833. the Word of God

  834. and then by grace,

  835. through faith,

  836. in the personal work

  837. of Jesus Christ,

  838. they are snatched

  839. from the clutches

  840. of sin and death

  841. for the praise

  842. of His name.

  843. Just in passing,

  844. tomorrow,

  845. 499 years ago,

  846. the Protestant Reformation

  847. began

  848. in a place called

  849. Wittenberg, Germany.

  850. in order to

  851. recapture

  852. these truths

  853. for the church.

  854. They hadn't been lost,

  855. but they were largely

  856. forgotten.

  857. I'd encourage you

  858. tomorrow

  859. not to celebrate

  860. Halloween,

  861. but instead

  862. to celebrate

  863. Reformation Day.

  864. All types of costumes

  865. abound

  866. from

  867. such a thing.

  868. Five Latin phrases

  869. emerged

  870. from the Reformation

  871. to summarize

  872. its basic

  873. theological principles,

  874. and these phrases

  875. are still useful

  876. to us.

  877. I don't use Latin

  878. to sound smart.

  879. I really want you

  880. to know that.

  881. It's good

  882. to have

  883. phrasing in our mind

  884. that we wouldn't

  885. use normally,

  886. I think,

  887. to help us remember

  888. deep theological

  889. truths.

  890. So I'm just going to

  891. rattle them off to you.

  892. You can look these up.

  893. The solas.

  894. Solas,

  895. Latin for

  896. alone,

  897. and you've got

  898. things that follow.

  899. So,

  900. sola scriptura.

  901. The Word of God

  902. alone

  903. tells us

  904. that we are saved

  905. sola gratia

  906. by grace alone,

  907. sola fide

  908. through faith alone,

  909. solas Christus

  910. in the person

  911. and work

  912. of Christ alone,

  913. sola

  914. Deo

  915. Gloria

  916. to the glory

  917. of God

  918. alone.

  919. The Wi-Fi password

  920. is hidden amongst

  921. those Latin phrases

  922. if you want to get

  923. on our Wi-Fi.

  924. Sola scriptura.

  925. Like the Word of God

  926. alone tells us

  927. that we are saved

  928. by grace alone,

  929. through faith alone,

  930. in the personal work

  931. of Jesus Christ alone,

  932. to the glory

  933. of God

  934. alone.

  935. Glorious,

  936. glorious

  937. truths.

  938. Ephesians 2,

  939. 8 and 9,

  940. for by grace

  941. you have been saved

  942. through faith.

  943. And this is not

  944. your own doing,

  945. it is the gift

  946. of God,

  947. not a result

  948. of works

  949. that no one

  950. may boast.

  951. Faith comes

  952. from hearing

  953. and hearing

  954. from the Word

  955. of God.

  956. God births

  957. in us faith.

  958. There's nothing

  959. we can do

  960. to earn

  961. the favor

  962. of God,

  963. but praise

  964. the Lord

  965. in Christ

  966. He is pleased

  967. with us.

  968. Last week's

  969. bulletin

  970. I would have

  971. used,

  972. I'm going to use it,

  973. George Whitfield

  974. once said,

  975. works,

  976. works,

  977. a man

  978. get to heaven

  979. by works,

  980. I would assume

  981. think of climbing

  982. to the moon

  983. on a rope

  984. of sand.

  985. Now some

  986. in the proclamation

  987. of the gospel

  988. will respond

  989. favorably to it.

  990. Sadly,

  991. others will not.

  992. Favorably

  993. in our text,

  994. the church

  995. referenced in Acts 15,

  996. right,

  997. that they're

  998. proclaiming to here

  999. in Acts 13,

  1000. right,

  1001. the proconsul,

  1002. we see him

  1003. respond favorably

  1004. to the gospel.

  1005. Now there's a

  1006. character in our text

  1007. that responds

  1008. unfavorably.

  1009. He's called

  1010. two names,

  1011. the first,

  1012. Bar-Jesus,

  1013. and the second,

  1014. Elimus.

  1015. Now Bar-Jesus

  1016. simply means

  1017. son of Joshua.

  1018. It's not that

  1019. complex,

  1020. in fact,

  1021. Jesus was a really

  1022. common name

  1023. of the day,

  1024. Yeshua,

  1025. Joshua,

  1026. right?

  1027. Verse 6 says

  1028. that he was a

  1029. Jewish,

  1030. Jewish descent,

  1031. false prophet.

  1032. Just a few

  1033. verses later,

  1034. verse 8,

  1035. he is called

  1036. Elimus,

  1037. which was his

  1038. Roman name.

  1039. It seemed that

  1040. many people had

  1041. both in this case.

  1042. This is the text

  1043. where we see

  1044. Saul,

  1045. also called

  1046. Paul.

  1047. Some people have

  1048. the notion that

  1049. Saul was his

  1050. pre-conversion name

  1051. and Paul was his

  1052. post-conversion name,

  1053. as God throughout

  1054. biblical history

  1055. has renamed people

  1056. at times.

  1057. Not the case here.

  1058. Saul was his

  1059. Jewish name,

  1060. Paul was his

  1061. Roman name.

  1062. And here he

  1063. finds himself

  1064. on a largely

  1065. Gentile island,

  1066. primarily Gentile

  1067. island,

  1068. preaching the

  1069. gospel,

  1070. likely using,

  1071. instead of his

  1072. Jewish name,

  1073. his Roman name,

  1074. simply to become

  1075. all things to all

  1076. people,

  1077. to relate more

  1078. closely to them.

  1079. Interestingly,

  1080. in our text,

  1081. the pro-consul's

  1082. name is what?

  1083. Sergius

  1084. Paulus.

  1085. His name is

  1086. Paul.

  1087. And I just

  1088. would imagine

  1089. that Saul

  1090. meets him

  1091. and goes,

  1092. hey,

  1093. my name is

  1094. Paul too.

  1095. I have something

  1096. I want to share

  1097. with you.

  1098. We have more

  1099. in common

  1100. than you know.

  1101. So some will

  1102. respond favorably,

  1103. some will

  1104. respond unfavorably.

  1105. And how do we

  1106. make sense of this?

  1107. There's much

  1108. effort today

  1109. to convince

  1110. people that

  1111. Jesus is the

  1112. way,

  1113. the truth,

  1114. and the life.

  1115. And I would

  1116. definitely argue

  1117. that we should

  1118. plead the case

  1119. of Christ to

  1120. people,

  1121. that we need

  1122. to employ

  1123. apologetics,

  1124. that we want

  1125. to argue

  1126. for Christ.

  1127. But at the

  1128. end of it all,

  1129. it's going to be

  1130. faith birthed

  1131. in people that

  1132. will bring them

  1133. to saving faith

  1134. in Jesus Christ.

  1135. Now turn with me

  1136. if you will

  1137. to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1138. chapter 4.

  1139. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:1–6

  1140. chapter 4

  1141. verses 1

  1142. through 6.

  1143. This text,

  1144. Paul writing,

  1145. helps us understand

  1146. why their

  1147. proclamation was

  1148. received favorably

  1149. by some,

  1150. but not by

  1151. Elimus.

  1152. Why did the

  1153. proconsul believe,

  1154. but Elimus

  1155. did not?

  1156. Verse 1,

  1157. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1158. chapter 4.

  1159. Therefore,

  1160. having this

  1161. ministry by

  1162. the mercy

  1163. of God,

  1164. we do not

  1165. lose heart.

  1166. He's talking

  1167. about proclaiming

  1168. the gospel.

  1169. Some people

  1170. will respond,

  1171. some people

  1172. will not.

  1173. We do not

  1174. lose heart.

  1175. Why?

  1176. But we

  1177. have renounced

  1178. disgraceful,

  1179. underhanded

  1180. ways.

  1181. We refuse

  1182. to practice

  1183. cunning,

  1184. or to

  1185. tamper

  1186. with God's

  1187. word,

  1188. but by

  1189. the

  1190. open

  1191. statement

  1192. of the

  1193. truth.

  1194. So you

  1195. see what

  1196. he's saying?

  1197. We don't

  1198. lose heart

  1199. because we

  1200. have not

  1201. been

  1202. deceitful,

  1203. we've not

  1204. been cunning,

  1205. we have not

  1206. tampered with

  1207. God's word,

  1208. but by the

  1209. open statement

  1210. of the

  1211. truth,

  1212. we would

  1213. commend

  1214. ourselves

  1215. to

  1216. everyone's

  1217. conscience

  1218. in the

  1219. sight of

  1220. God.

  1221. And even

  1222. if our

  1223. gospel is

  1224. veiled,

  1225. it is

  1226. veiled to

  1227. those

  1228. who are

  1229. perishing.

  1230. So if

  1231. people don't

  1232. understand it,

  1233. if it's

  1234. veiled,

  1235. it's hidden

  1236. from them,

  1237. it's hidden

  1238. from those

  1239. who are

  1240. perishing.

  1241. In their

  1242. case,

  1243. the God

  1244. of this

  1245. world has

  1246. blinded the

  1247. minds of

  1248. the unbelievers

  1249. to keep

  1250. them from

  1251. seeing the

  1252. light of

  1253. the gospel

  1254. of the

  1255. glory of

  1256. Christ,

  1257. who is

  1258. the image

  1259. of God.

  1260. For what

  1261. we proclaim

  1262. is not

  1263. ourselves,

  1264. but Jesus

  1265. Christ

  1266. as Lord,

  1267. with ourselves

  1268. as your

  1269. servants

  1270. for Jesus

  1271. sake.

  1272. For God

  1273. who said,

  1274. let light

  1275. shine out

  1276. of darkness,

  1277. who created

  1278. light,

  1279. the light

  1280. of the

  1281. world,

  1282. he said,

  1283. let light

  1284. shine out

  1285. of darkness,

  1286. has shown

  1287. in our

  1288. hearts to

  1289. give the

  1290. light of

  1291. the knowledge

  1292. of the

  1293. glory of

  1294. God in

  1295. the face

  1296. of Jesus

  1297. Christ.

  1298. So they

  1299. preach,

  1300. they preach

  1301. the good

  1302. news,

  1303. they proclaim

  1304. the truth,

  1305. and they

  1306. understand that

  1307. some will

  1308. respond favorably

  1309. and some

  1310. will not.

  1311. But yet

  1312. they keep

  1313. preaching.

  1314. A man

  1315. one time

  1316. asked Charles

  1317. Spurgeon

  1318. why,

  1319. if some

  1320. people were

  1321. elect,

  1322. he preached

  1323. the gospel

  1324. at all,

  1325. and he

  1326. said,

  1327. if there

  1328. were a

  1329. yellow stripe

  1330. on the

  1331. elect's

  1332. back,

  1333. I would

  1334. simply go

  1335. around lifting

  1336. up their

  1337. shirt tails.

  1338. But since

  1339. there are

  1340. not,

  1341. we preach

  1342. the gospel.

  1343. Verse 12,

  1344. right,

  1345. the proconsul

  1346. believes.

  1347. The gospel,

  1348. the glory

  1349. of God,

  1350. and the

  1351. face of

  1352. Jesus Christ

  1353. is not

  1354. hidden from

  1355. him.

  1356. It says,

  1357. when he saw

  1358. what had

  1359. occurred,

  1360. so he sees

  1361. this thing

  1362. happen to

  1363. Elymas,

  1364. right,

  1365. does he

  1366. believe because

  1367. of what he

  1368. saw happen

  1369. to Elymas?

  1370. I'd suggest

  1371. not,

  1372. for he

  1373. was astonished

  1374. not at what

  1375. happened to

  1376. Elymas at

  1377. the teaching

  1378. of the

  1379. Lord,

  1380. at the

  1381. word of

  1382. God

  1383. proclaimed.

  1384. So,

  1385. God employs

  1386. means for

  1387. the pursuit

  1388. of his

  1389. praise.

  1390. His people,

  1391. his word,

  1392. and from

  1393. our text

  1394. today,

  1395. there are

  1396. some other

  1397. means,

  1398. but from

  1399. our text

  1400. today,

  1401. thirdly,

  1402. his

  1403. suffering.

  1404. As God

  1405. pursues

  1406. his praise,

  1407. he does

  1408. so with

  1409. his

  1410. suffering.

  1411. The

  1412. proclamation

  1413. of Jesus

  1414. Christ

  1415. and the

  1416. suffering

  1417. of Jesus

  1418. Christ,

  1419. they walk

  1420. hand in

  1421. hand.

  1422. They walk

  1423. hand in

  1424. hand.

  1425. If you

  1426. propagate the

  1427. word of

  1428. God,

  1429. if you

  1430. proclaim the

  1431. gospel of

  1432. Jesus Christ,

  1433. you will

  1434. be persecuted.

  1435. And we

  1436. often have

  1437. these really

  1438. big notions

  1439. of persecution

  1440. that are a

  1441. reality.

  1442. We see a

  1443. lot of it

  1444. in the

  1445. book of

  1446. Acts.

  1447. We see a

  1448. lot of it

  1449. in the

  1450. world today.

  1451. In fact,

  1452. next Sunday

  1453. is the

  1454. International

  1455. Day of

  1456. Prayer for

  1457. the

  1458. Persecuted

  1459. Church.

  1460. And we're

  1461. going to

  1462. take some

  1463. time to

  1464. do that

  1465. and consider

  1466. that together.

  1467. But I

  1468. fear sometimes

  1469. we think of

  1470. that as such

  1471. a far-off

  1472. thing.

  1473. Really,

  1474. the type of

  1475. persecution

  1476. we're talking

  1477. about next

  1478. Sunday is

  1479. beatings and

  1480. imprisonment and

  1481. martyrdom.

  1482. We need to

  1483. join in prayer

  1484. for churches

  1485. that are

  1486. experiencing that

  1487. around the

  1488. world.

  1489. Undoubtedly,

  1490. we shouldn't

  1491. think that we're

  1492. too much like

  1493. them.

  1494. However,

  1495. we also

  1496. shouldn't think

  1497. that we're

  1498. too different

  1499. from them.

  1500. Those who

  1501. desire to

  1502. live godly in

  1503. Christ Jesus

  1504. will be

  1505. persecuted.

  1506. If you're

  1507. not feeling

  1508. any pushback

  1509. from the

  1510. world,

  1511. you're not

  1512. proclaiming the

  1513. gospel of

  1514. Jesus Christ

  1515. as you

  1516. should.

  1517. The two

  1518. walk hand

  1519. in hand.

  1520. They are

  1521. mutually

  1522. inclusive.

  1523. They're

  1524. mutually

  1525. inclusive.

  1526. We're not

  1527. saved from

  1528. persecution

  1529. because we're

  1530. Americans.

  1531. Christians.

  1532. But

  1533. Elimus the

  1534. magician,

  1535. verse 8,

  1536. for that's

  1537. the meaning

  1538. of his

  1539. name.

  1540. Elimus

  1541. means

  1542. Greek,

  1543. wise,

  1544. or magical.

  1545. Opposed

  1546. them.

  1547. The Greek

  1548. word for

  1549. opposed is

  1550. a little

  1551. stronger

  1552. than we

  1553. may think.

  1554. He

  1555. resisted

  1556. or he

  1557. was hostile

  1558. toward this

  1559. message.

  1560. And what

  1561. did he

  1562. seek to

  1563. do?

  1564. He

  1565. sought

  1566. to turn

  1567. the

  1568. proconsul

  1569. away from

  1570. the

  1571. faith.

  1572. This

  1573. is a

  1574. picture

  1575. of

  1576. persecution

  1577. the way

  1578. we may

  1579. experience

  1580. it

  1581. today.

  1582. Simple

  1583. opposition

  1584. to the

  1585. message

  1586. of Jesus

  1587. Christ.

  1588. Seeking

  1589. to intervene

  1590. and turn

  1591. people

  1592. away

  1593. from

  1594. the

  1595. way

  1596. of

  1597. faith.

  1598. Listen to

  1599. what Paul

  1600. wrote in

  1601. Colossians

    Colossians 1:24

  1602. chapter 1

  1603. verse 24.

  1604. Now I

  1605. rejoice

  1606. in my

  1607. sufferings

  1608. for your

  1609. sake.

  1610. And in

  1611. my flesh,

  1612. peculiar

  1613. phrasing

  1614. here,

  1615. I am

  1616. filling

  1617. up what

  1618. is lacking

  1619. in

  1620. Christ's

  1621. afflictions

  1622. for the

  1623. sake of

  1624. his

  1625. body,

  1626. that is

  1627. the

  1628. church.

  1629. I am

  1630. filling

  1631. up what

  1632. is lacking

  1633. in

  1634. Christ's

  1635. afflictions

  1636. for the

  1637. sake of

  1638. his

  1639. body,

  1640. that is

  1641. the

  1642. church.

  1643. Is

  1644. Paul

  1645. suggesting

  1646. that

  1647. Christ's

  1648. suffering

  1649. wasn't

  1650. enough?

  1651. May it

  1652. never be.

  1653. Paul is

  1654. not saying

  1655. that Christ's

  1656. suffering was

  1657. lacking in

  1658. its power.

  1659. What he

  1660. is saying

  1661. is that

  1662. Christ's

  1663. suffering

  1664. needs to

  1665. be displayed

  1666. to those

  1667. who will

  1668. believe in

  1669. him.

  1670. Life,

  1671. death,

  1672. and

  1673. resurrection

  1674. is given

  1675. power as

  1676. we proclaim

  1677. the truth

  1678. of the

  1679. gospel as

  1680. we suffer

  1681. for their

  1682. sake.

  1683. Proclamation

  1684. and persecution

  1685. are mutually

  1686. inclusive.

  1687. inclusive.

  1688. People

  1689. around us

  1690. need to

  1691. see us

  1692. encounter

  1693. resistance

  1694. to the

  1695. glorious

  1696. truth of

  1697. the

  1698. gospel

  1699. and

  1700. press

  1701. through

  1702. it

  1703. all

  1704. the

  1705. same.

  1706. They

  1707. need to

  1708. hear us

  1709. continue

  1710. to preach

  1711. the word

  1712. of God

  1713. when people

  1714. don't like

  1715. us for

  1716. doing so.

  1717. When people

  1718. think us

  1719. strange,

  1720. when we

  1721. lose a

  1722. job because

  1723. of the

  1724. proclamation

  1725. of the

  1726. gospel,

  1727. people need

  1728. to see

  1729. us press

  1730. on

  1731. through that.

  1732. The two

  1733. things are

  1734. mutually

  1735. inclusive.

  1736. So we

  1737. see the

  1738. beneficiaries

  1739. of God's

  1740. pursuit of

  1741. his praise,

  1742. the church,

  1743. the means

  1744. of God's

  1745. pursuit of

  1746. his praise,

  1747. his people,

  1748. his word,

  1749. and his

  1750. suffering.

  1751. And finally,

  1752. we see the

  1753. persistence of

  1754. God's

  1755. pursuit of

  1756. his praise.

  1757. Praise God

  1758. that he is

  1759. persistent in

  1760. his pursuit

  1761. of his

  1762. praise.

  1763. God

  1764. intended

  1765. to save

  1766. the proconsul

  1767. and nothing

  1768. would stand

  1769. in his

  1770. way.

  1771. I hope

  1772. that's a

  1773. great

  1774. encouragement

  1775. to you

  1776. this morning.

  1777. God had

  1778. an intention

  1779. for the

  1780. governor

  1781. of Cyprus

  1782. and nothing

  1783. would stand

  1784. in his

  1785. way.

  1786. He created

  1787. a church

  1788. in Antioch,

  1789. he commissioned

  1790. missionaries

  1791. to Cyprus,

  1792. and he brought

  1793. them to

  1794. the proconsul,

  1795. Sergius

  1796. Paulus.

  1797. And in the

  1798. face of the

  1799. opposition of

  1800. Elimus,

  1801. catch this,

  1802. that in

  1803. verse 9,

  1804. Saul,

  1805. who's also

  1806. called Paul,

  1807. is filled

  1808. with the

  1809. Holy Spirit.

  1810. I would

  1811. not suggest

  1812. that anytime

  1813. somebody opposes

  1814. your proclamation

  1815. of the gospel,

  1816. that you call

  1817. them a son

  1818. of the devil.

  1819. I would

  1820. advise caution

  1821. in speaking

  1822. the way

  1823. that Paul

  1824. speaks here,

  1825. but Paul

  1826. certainly doesn't

  1827. seem to be

  1828. frightened at

  1829. all by this

  1830. man,

  1831. does he?

  1832. He's filled

  1833. with the

  1834. Holy Spirit,

  1835. moved by

  1836. the Spirit

  1837. to say

  1838. to him,

  1839. you son

  1840. of the

  1841. devil,

  1842. you enemy

  1843. of all

  1844. righteousness,

  1845. full of

  1846. deceit and

  1847. villainy,

  1848. will you

  1849. not stop

  1850. making crooked

  1851. the straight

  1852. paths of

  1853. the Lord?

  1854. What is

  1855. meant by

  1856. that,

  1857. making crooked

  1858. the straight

  1859. paths of

  1860. the Lord?

  1861. And we get

  1862. a little bit

  1863. of a hint

  1864. if you look

  1865. in verse

  1866. 8,

  1867. Luke records

  1868. that Elimus

  1869. was seeking

  1870. to turn

  1871. the proconsul

  1872. away from

  1873. the faith.

  1874. And the

  1875. Greek word

  1876. for making

  1877. crooked

  1878. and the

  1879. Greek word

  1880. for seeking

  1881. to turn,

  1882. it's a single

  1883. word and

  1884. it's the same

  1885. word.

  1886. So these two

  1887. correspond,

  1888. right?

  1889. Seeking to

  1890. turn and

  1891. making crooked

  1892. correspond,

  1893. which leads

  1894. me to believe

  1895. that also

  1896. the faith

  1897. and the

  1898. straight paths

  1899. of the

  1900. Lord

  1901. correspond.

  1902. So God

  1903. has straight

  1904. paths

  1905. leading to

  1906. faith.

  1907. And He

  1908. will not

  1909. allow them

  1910. to be made

  1911. crooked.

  1912. He will

  1913. not allow

  1914. one of His

  1915. own to be

  1916. turned

  1917. from His

  1918. praise.

  1919. Praise Him

  1920. for that.

  1921. After Peter

  1922. proclaims that

  1923. Jesus is the

  1924. Christ in

  1925. Matthew 16,

  1926. 18,

  1927. Jesus says,

  1928. and I tell

  1929. you,

  1930. you are Peter,

  1931. and on this

  1932. rock,

  1933. He's talking

  1934. about the

  1935. proclamation

  1936. that Jesus

  1937. is the

  1938. Christ,

  1939. not on

  1940. Peter.

  1941. He's talking

  1942. about the

  1943. proclamation

  1944. on this

  1945. rock that

  1946. you have

  1947. said,

  1948. I am

  1949. the

  1950. Christ,

  1951. I will

  1952. build

  1953. my

  1954. church,

  1955. and the

  1956. gates of

  1957. hell shall

  1958. not prevail

  1959. against it.

  1960. They will

  1961. not stand

  1962. in opposition

  1963. to the

  1964. advance

  1965. of the

  1966. church.

  1967. So we

  1968. can see

  1969. God's

  1970. pursuit

  1971. of His

  1972. praise as

  1973. we observe

  1974. the

  1975. beneficiaries

  1976. of God's

  1977. pursuit

  1978. of His

  1979. praise,

  1980. the means

  1981. of God's

  1982. pursuit of

  1983. His

  1984. praise.

  1985. I'm saying

  1986. that a lot

  1987. and the

  1988. persistence

  1989. of God's

  1990. pursuit of

  1991. His

  1992. praise.

  1993. So what does

  1994. it mean for

  1995. us today?

  1996. We're looking

  1997. at it here,

  1998. life of the

  1999. early church,

  2000. 8047.

  2001. Does it mean

  2002. something for us

  2003. today?

  2004. It certainly

  2005. does.

  2006. It's God's

  2007. word to us.

  2008. What's the

  2009. application?

  2010. I've got three

  2011. and they're

  2012. quick.

  2013. number one,

  2014. if you

  2015. have placed

  2016. believing

  2017. faith in

  2018. Jesus

  2019. Christ,

  2020. then you

  2021. are a

  2022. beneficiary

  2023. of God's

  2024. pursuit

  2025. of His

  2026. praise.

  2027. You should

  2028. revel in

  2029. the fact

  2030. that this

  2031. is what

  2032. God is

  2033. set to.

  2034. A quick

  2035. unanimous

  2036. poem for

  2037. you,

  2038. which I

  2039. think pictures

  2040. this so

  2041. well.

  2042. Oh, how

  2043. long and

  2044. dark the

  2045. stairs I

  2046. trod,

  2047. with

  2048. stumbling

  2049. feet to

  2050. find my

  2051. God,

  2052. gaining a

  2053. foothold bit

  2054. by bit,

  2055. then slipping

  2056. back and

  2057. losing it.

  2058. There came a

  2059. certain time

  2060. when I

  2061. loosened my

  2062. hold and

  2063. fell thereby,

  2064. down to the

  2065. lowest step

  2066. my fall,

  2067. as if I

  2068. had not

  2069. climbed at

  2070. all.

  2071. And as I

  2072. lay despairing

  2073. there,

  2074. there came a

  2075. footfall on

  2076. the stairs,

  2077. and lo,

  2078. when hope

  2079. had ceased

  2080. to be,

  2081. my God

  2082. came down

  2083. the stairs

  2084. to me.

  2085. We are the

  2086. beneficiaries

  2087. of God's

  2088. pursuit of

  2089. His own

  2090. praise.

  2091. If you

  2092. have not

  2093. placed

  2094. believing

  2095. faith in

  2096. Christ,

  2097. then the

  2098. invitation is

  2099. before you

  2100. today.

  2101. I pray that

  2102. you find

  2103. yourself humble,

  2104. laying with

  2105. no hope,

  2106. at the foot

  2107. of those

  2108. stairs.

  2109. The invitation

  2110. of God

  2111. coming to

  2112. you that

  2113. you might

  2114. respond in

  2115. faith is

  2116. for you

  2117. today.

  2118. Will you

  2119. recognize your

  2120. rebellion against

  2121. a good and

  2122. glorious God?

  2123. Will you

  2124. recognize that

  2125. you are like

  2126. a cyprine?

  2127. Repent of

  2128. your sin and

  2129. place your

  2130. faith in the

  2131. personal work

  2132. of Christ

  2133. this day.

  2134. I want you to

  2135. be a

  2136. beneficiary of

  2137. God's pursuit

  2138. of His praise.

  2139. I want you

  2140. to praise

  2141. Him with

  2142. me forever.

  2143. Secondly,

  2144. if you are

  2145. a Christian,

  2146. God intends

  2147. to use you

  2148. as a means

  2149. in the pursuit

  2150. of His praise.

  2151. Are you

  2152. obedient to

  2153. the call of

  2154. God on

  2155. your life

  2156. here

  2157. now?

  2158. And will

  2159. you continue

  2160. to be obedient

  2161. in all

  2162. things

  2163. to all

  2164. peoples?

  2165. this is

  2166. your gospel

  2167. commission.

  2168. The disciple

  2169. of Jesus

  2170. Christ makes

  2171. disciples of

  2172. Jesus Christ.

  2173. Thirdly,

  2174. we can all

  2175. rejoice in

  2176. God's

  2177. persistence in

  2178. the pursuit

  2179. of His

  2180. praise.

  2181. We are a

  2182. part of a

  2183. story that

  2184. began a

  2185. long time

  2186. ago.

  2187. Began in

  2188. Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  2189. chapter 1.

  2190. It kicked

  2191. off in

  2192. Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  2193. chapter 3.

  2194. We are

  2195. part of

  2196. this huge

  2197. redemptive

  2198. story.

  2199. Barnabas,

  2200. Paul,

  2201. and John

  2202. Mark on

  2203. the island

  2204. of Cyprus

  2205. is just

  2206. one scene

  2207. in a much

  2208. larger

  2209. play.

  2210. God is

  2211. pursuing

  2212. and He

  2213. has made

  2214. us His

  2215. own.

  2216. Further,

  2217. we can be

  2218. emboldened

  2219. in our

  2220. gospel

  2221. proclamation

  2222. because

  2223. nothing

  2224. will stop

  2225. the salvation

  2226. of God's

  2227. people.

  2228. Let's pray

  2229. together.

  2230. Let's pray

  2231. together.

  2232. Let's pray

  2233. together.
