    Acts 13 chapter mention

  2. Acts chapter 13, our text for today is verse 13 through verse 43.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  3. There is much talk today in the church concerning vision for the church.

  4. And that term is typically used, thinking of casting compelling dreams for the life of an organization.

  5. And most talk of vision casting begins with a reference to a particular verse,

  6. or I should say the first half of a particular verse, which is Proverbs 29.18.

  7. Most often quoted from the King James Version, where there is no vision, the people perish.

  8. You may be familiar with this.

  9. Rick Warren, who is the pastor of Saddleback Church in California and author of The Purpose Driven Life and other books that start with purpose driven.

  10. If you are a good Christian this morning, you may be wearing your purpose driven life boxers.

  11. said,

  12. My imagination influences my aspiration.

  13. In other words, your dreams determine your destiny.

  14. To accomplish anything, you must first have a mission, a goal, a hope, a vision.

  15. And then he quotes the first half of 29.18 from the King James Version.

  16. And without a vision, the people perish.

  17. Bill Hybels, the pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois, one of the largest attended churches in America,

  18. averages 24,000 in attendance each Sunday, wrote this.

  19. Proverbs 29.18 says,

  20. Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained.

  21. He's getting closer.

  22. They can't focus.

  23. Can't reach their goal.

  24. Can't follow their dream.

  25. An older translation says,

  26. Without vision, the people perish.

  27. I've seen it with my own eyes.

  28. Without vision,

  29. people lose the vitality that makes them feel alive.

  30. The foreword to Andy Stanley's book,

  31. Making Vision Stick,

  32. reads as follows.

  33. Noted author and pastor Andy Stanley points out

  34. that if followers don't get the vision,

  35. it's because the leaders haven't delivered it.

  36. He reveals the three reasons vision doesn't stick,

  37. and then he delivers three ways to make vision stick,

  38. to make you a leader worth following.

  39. So we have to ask the question,

  40. is this fair use of Proverbs 29.18?

  41. And it is not.

  42. Proverbs 29.18 in the English Standard Version of the Bible

  43. and pretty much every other version of the Bible

  44. reads more like this,

  45. where there is no prophetic vision,

  46. the people cast off restraint.

  47. And the rest of the verse reads,

  48. But blessed is he who keeps the law.

  49. In fact, the last part of the King James Version,

  50. and let me say to you

  51. that the King James Version of the Bible

  52. is a good translation of the Bible.

  53. It gets much of it very, very right.

  54. But it's interesting that none of these men

  55. or anybody who references Proverbs 29.18 this way

  56. preaches from the King James Version,

  57. nor would suggest that you study from the King James Version.

  58. But even the King James Version,

  59. the rest of verse 18 says,

  60. But he that keepeth the law happy is he.

  61. And to rightly understand Proverbs 29.18 is to see

  62. that the Hebrew word for vision,

  63. more closely got at with the ESV translation,

  64. prophetic vision,

  65. means a word from God.

  66. So without a word from God,

  67. the people cast off restraint.

  68. Without a word from God to give guidance to the people of God,

  69. the people of God throw off restraint.

  70. They don't know where to go.

  71. They don't know what to do.

  72. And we know that's what it means

  73. because the rest of the verse says,

  74. But blessed, happy is he who keeps the what?

  75. The law, right?

  76. That's been given by the word of God.

  77. And so, what people need is the Scripture.

  78. What people need is the prophetic vision.

  79. People need to see Christ.

  80. Christ needs to be proclaimed to them by the Bible.

  81. That's why here we preach the Bible.

  82. And we do that humbly.

  83. And we do it by grace.

  84. It is with great fear and trembling

  85. that I even attempt to tell you what this book means.

  86. But we do that.

  87. We labor in that because we love you.

  88. Because we want what is best for you.

  89. We want your blessedness.

  90. Hear me.

  91. I don't want you to follow me.

  92. Don't follow me.

  93. Follow Christ.

  94. I'm only any good as a leader

  95. if I point you to Him.

  96. And how do we do this?

  97. We do it with the Bible.

  98. Today's text is Luke's first account

  99. of Paul's preaching.

  100. It is not the first time that Paul has preached.

  101. He's been preaching now for years.

  102. But it is the first record of his preaching.

  103. And it is Bible preaching.

  104. I want you to see that this morning.

  105. See the example in Paul the preacher.

  106. He preached the Bible.

  107. So again, our text is Acts 13.

  108. Verses 13-43.

  109. Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos

  110. and came to Perga in Pamphylia.

  111. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

  112. But they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia.

  113. And on the Sabbath day, they went into the synagogue and sat down.

  114. After the reading from the law and the prophets,

  115. the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them saying,

  116. Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.

  117. So Paul stood up and motioning with his hands said,

  118. Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.

  119. The God of this people, Israel, chose our fathers

  120. and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt.

  121. And with uplifted arm, he led them out of it.

  122. And for about 40 years, he put up with them in the wilderness.

  123. And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan,

  124. he gave them their land as an inheritance.

  125. All this took about 450 years.

  126. And after that, he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

  127. Then they asked for a king.

  128. And God gave them Saul, the son of Kish,

  129. a man of the tribe of Benjamin for 40 years.

  130. And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king,

  131. of whom he testified and said,

  132. I have found in David, the son of Jesse,

  133. a man after my heart who will do all my will.

  134. Of this man's offspring,

  135. God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.

  136. Before his coming,

  137. John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance

  138. to all the people of Israel.

  139. And as John was finishing his course, he said,

  140. What do you suppose that I am?

  141. I am not he.

  142. No, but behold, after me one is coming,

  143. the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.

  144. Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham,

  145. and those among you who fear God,

  146. to us has been sent the message of this salvation.

  147. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers,

  148. because they did not recognize him,

  149. nor understand the utterances of the prophets,

  150. which are read every Sabbath,

  151. fulfilled them by condemning him.

  152. And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death,

  153. they asked Pilate to have him executed.

  154. And when they had carried out all that was written of him,

  155. they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

  156. But God raised him from the dead.

  157. And for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him

  158. from Galilee to Jerusalem,

  159. who were now his witnesses to the people.

  160. And we bring you the good news

  161. that what God promised to the fathers,

  162. this he has fulfilled to us, their children,

  163. by raising Jesus.

  164. As also it is written in the second Psalm,

  165. You are my son, today I have begotten you.

  166. And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead,

  167. no more to return to corruption,

  168. he has spoken in this way,

  169. I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.

  170. Therefore, he says also in another Psalm,

  171. You will not let your holy one see corruption.

  172. For David, after he had served the purpose of God

  173. in his own generation,

  174. fell asleep and was laid with his fathers

  175. and saw corruption.

  176. But he whom God raised up did not see corruption.

  177. Let it be known to you, therefore, brothers,

  178. that through this man forgiveness of sins

  179. is proclaimed to you.

  180. And by him, everyone who believes is freed

  181. from everything from which you could not be freed

  182. by the law of Moses.

  183. Beware, therefore,

  184. lest what is said in the prophets should come about.

  185. Look, you scoffers,

  186. be astounded and perish,

  187. for I am doing a work in your days,

  188. a work that you will not believe,

  189. even if one tells it to you.

  190. As they went out,

  191. the people begged that these things

  192. might be told them the next Sabbath.

  193. And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up,

  194. many Jews and devout converts to Judaism

  195. followed Paul and Bartimaeus,

  196. who, as they spoke with them,

  197. urged them to continue in the grace of God.

  198. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  199. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  200. We would all do well to listen to it

  201. in order to believe its promises

  202. and obey its commands.

  203. And so Paul, given the opportunity in the synagogue,

  204. preaches Christ.

  205. He preaches Jesus Christ.

  206. And we're going to cover that in three sub-points.

  207. Paul preaches Jesus Christ

  208. as the culmination of human history,

  209. as the fulfillment of prophecy,

  210. and as the justifier of the sinner.

  211. Now we see that Paul and his companions,

  212. this is Barnabas and John Mark,

  213. have now left the island of Cyprus.

  214. And I lost control up here.

  215. If you don't mind getting that next slide for me, Adam,

  216. just so you can see.

  217. I'm a visual learner,

  218. so I like to see the map.

  219. You recall at the beginning of verse 13,

  220. they traveled from Antioch down here,

  221. bottom right corner just above the speaker,

  222. to Seleucia,

  223. then down to Salamis.

  224. They traveled all about the island of Cyprus

  225. preaching the gospel of God.

  226. They went to Paphos,

  227. where they were able to speak the gospel

  228. to the governor and he believed.

  229. They've now left from there.

  230. They've gone to Pamphylia.

  231. You can see it up on the coast there.

  232. To Perga.

  233. And then on to Antioch,

  234. not to be confused with Antioch of Syria,

  235. but Antioch,

  236. Pisidia,

  237. a common name of cities in that day.

  238. Gainesville, right?

  239. This is Antioch.

  240. Pisidia is where they are eventually heading.

  241. So you can see that John Mark leaves them.

  242. Luke does not tell us ever exactly why,

  243. although we get some evidence later on

  244. as there's a dispute between Barnabas and Paul

  245. about whether or not John Mark should go with them.

  246. If you recall this, Paul really doesn't want them to go

  247. because he had left them.

  248. And the assumption that's made is that he left

  249. because the journey that they're about to take

  250. is an extremely dangerous one.

  251. So you're going to make this journey from Perga to Antioch,

  252. which was about 100 miles,

  253. had two really, really hard river crossings,

  254. rivers that often flooded,

  255. had lots of rapids in them.

  256. They weren't taking boats across.

  257. They also had to travel across the Taurus Mountains.

  258. The path actually went up on the cliff sides,

  259. very treacherous.

  260. And this area was known for bandits

  261. that lived in the area and would ransack people.

  262. In fact, a bunch of the Roman conquerors

  263. had a great deal of problem with these bandits in this area.

  264. It was kind of a stronghold still,

  265. even against Rome,

  266. and they liked to ransack Roman travelers.

  267. I don't think that they were honorable men at all,

  268. but in my mind, I think of Robin Hood a little.

  269. When I think of these men,

  270. it was a dangerous, dangerous place for them to travel.

  271. And so likely, that's why.

  272. Likely, that's why John Mark turned around,

  273. said, I'm not for the danger that's about to happen,

  274. and went back to Jerusalem.

  275. But Paul and Barnabas, they press on.

  276. Paul's comments in 2 Corinthians 11,

  277. the first part of 26,

  278. are likely concerning this route.

  279. He says,

  280. On frequent journeys,

  281. in danger from rivers,

  282. danger from robbers,

  283. he goes on in verse 26,

  284. but likely, this crossing,

  285. which he did a multitude of times,

  286. is what he's referring to,

  287. the rivers and the danger from the robbers.

  288. They arrive in Antioch of Pisidia,

  289. and on the Sabbath day,

  290. they go into the synagogue,

  291. and they sit down.

  292. They go and join the worship in the synagogue

  293. on the Sabbath day.

  294. And we're going to see this as Paul's persistent habit.

  295. When he goes to a new place,

  296. to a new city,

  297. the very first thing that he does

  298. is he goes to the synagogue.

  299. And we should ask the question,

  300. why?

  301. Why is it that he does this thing?

  302. I think it's twofold, the reasoning.

  303. Number one,

  304. he started with the people

  305. who had a knowledge

  306. of the God he was talking about.

  307. They had the Old Testament Scriptures.

  308. They believed in God Creator.

  309. They believed they were the people of God.

  310. And it gave them a starting point

  311. to continue to tell that Gospel story to them.

  312. To see the fulfillment

  313. of all of those things,

  314. human history,

  315. prophecy,

  316. in Christ.

  317. But also,

  318. I think he loved his people.

  319. He had a concern for Jews.

  320. The Jews had been dispersed

  321. all across this area.

  322. There were Jews living

  323. in all of these places

  324. as well as people

  325. who had converted to Judaism.

  326. And he's concerned for them.

  327. He wants to seek their good

  328. in these places.

  329. Romans 9, verses 1-3

    Romans 9:1–3

  330. is some evidence of this.

  331. Paul writes,

  332. I am speaking the truth in Christ.

  333. I am not lying.

  334. My conscience bears me witness

  335. in the Holy Spirit

  336. that I have great sorrow

  337. and unceasing anguish

  338. in my heart.

  339. For I could wish

  340. that I myself were accursed

  341. and cut off from Christ

  342. for the sake of my brothers,

  343. my kinsmen,

  344. according to the flesh.

  345. He had this deep heart felt

  346. to the degree

  347. that he would prefer

  348. to be cut off

  349. from Christ

  350. in order that they might

  351. know Christ.

  352. And so we're going to see this

  353. as a habit of his.

  354. He's going to go first

  355. to the synagogue

  356. and first speak

  357. to the Jews

  358. and those who have converted

  359. to Judaism

  360. before he speaks more broadly

  361. in each community.

  362. And as would have been common

  363. in the synagogue,

  364. there's a reading

  365. from the Law and the Prophets.

  366. And the Law and the Prophets

  367. was a common phrase

  368. used to speak

  369. of the Scriptures

  370. in that day.

  371. This would have been

  372. our Old Testament.

  373. Jesus confirms this

  374. as our Old Testament.

  375. We have it as 49 books.

  376. The Old Testament,

  377. boy, if I get this wrong,

  378. I'm going to feel horrible

  379. this morning.

  380. My brain's suddenly

  381. freaking out on me.

  382. They had it as fewer books

  383. because some of the books

  384. that we have divided up,

  385. 1 and 2 Samuel,

  386. for example,

  387. was the book of Samuel

  388. for them.

  389. So fewer books for them,

  390. but still the same text

  391. that we have today

  392. as our Christian Old Testament.

  393. They would have read

  394. somewhere from this text,

  395. the Law and the Prophets.

  396. And we see that they asked

  397. Paul and or Barnabas

  398. to speak.

  399. Now this isn't because

  400. they were guests.

  401. This isn't because

  402. they were like random individuals.

  403. We don't ask,

  404. if I've never seen your face before,

  405. I go,

  406. hey, would you like to talk

  407. this morning?

  408. Likely they had gotten

  409. to know them a bit.

  410. There was a little bit

  411. of conversation happening

  412. beforehand.

  413. And because Paul

  414. was an understudy

  415. of the well-known

  416. rabbi Gamaliel,

  417. they would have been

  418. interested to hear

  419. what he had to say.

  420. He had studied underneath.

  421. It's like he had been

  422. to the best seminary

  423. in the land.

  424. So maybe if we had

  425. a guest on a Sunday morning

  426. that I knew

  427. had a PhD

  428. from Southern Seminary.

  429. I'm like,

  430. hey, you want to talk

  431. this morning?

  432. Because I'm good.

  433. You want to get up here?

  434. I'd prefer to hear

  435. what you have to say.

  436. So something like this happens

  437. and they ask

  438. if they'd like to do so

  439. and Paul seizes

  440. the opportunity.

  441. Sees it as something

  442. that's orchestrated by God

  443. for the sake of the people,

  444. his hearers,

  445. and he seizes the opportunity.

  446. And he gives to them

  447. across our text

  448. three exhortations.

  449. And I'm kind of

  450. setting the stage.

  451. Three exhortations.

  452. Verse 16,

  453. he says,

  454. listen.

  455. Tell them to listen.

  456. He stands up.

  457. He motions with his hand.

  458. This is why I speak

  459. with my hands.

  460. He motions with his hand,

  461. men of Israel

  462. and you who fear God.

  463. So those who are Jewish

  464. and those who have been

  465. converted to Judaism,

  466. proselytites,

  467. listen.

  468. The things I'm about to say

  469. matter.

  470. They are important.

  471. And I love here

  472. that Paul doesn't tell them

  473. a poem

  474. or share a joke

  475. to get their attention.

  476. He just says,

  477. listen,

  478. and launches into a sermon.

  479. In fact,

  480. interestingly,

  481. this is the longest

  482. recorded sermon

  483. that Paul preaches,

  484. which doesn't mean

  485. that he didn't preach

  486. more and longer,

  487. but this is the longest one

  488. that Luke records.

  489. So he says,

  490. listen,

  491. and he gets into it.

  492. He also exhorts them

  493. to beware.

  494. Verse 40,

  495. beware,

  496. therefore,

  497. in light of everything

  498. that I've said,

  499. beware,

  500. lest what is said

  501. in the prophets

  502. should come about.

  503. We'll talk more about that

  504. in just a bit.

  505. But he tells them

  506. to listen.

  507. He tells them to beware.

  508. And then implied,

  509. verse 38 and 39,

  510. he exhorts them to believe.

  511. Let it be known to you,

  512. therefore,

  513. brothers,

  514. that through this man

  515. forgiveness of sins

  516. is proclaimed to you,

  517. and by him

  518. everyone who believes

  519. is freed

  520. from everything

  521. from which you could not

  522. be freed

  523. by the law of Moses.

  524. So he exhorts them,

  525. and I'm exhorting you

  526. this morning

  527. to listen

  528. to the words of Paul,

  529. to beware,

  530. and to believe.

  531. The backdoor main outline,

  532. Jesus Christ

  533. as the culmination

  534. of human history.

  535. And we see this

  536. in verses 17

  537. through 22.

  538. And while I can't,

  539. we don't have time

  540. this morning

  541. to walk through

  542. these things line by line,

  543. or to develop it,

  544. oh, like,

  545. this morning I wanted

  546. to talk about covenants

  547. so much.

  548. We're not going to talk

  549. about covenants at all.

  550. There's just not enough time.

  551. There's so much to be said

  552. from these verses.

  553. But we see

  554. Paul preaching Christ

  555. as the culmination

  556. of human history,

  557. the high point,

  558. the climactic point

  559. of human history

  560. as he summarizes

  561. the grace of God

  562. toward his people

  563. from Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  564. through the book

  565. of 1 Samuel

  566. in six verses.

  567. It's a sweeping summary

  568. of Jewish history

  569. in six verses.

  570. And in the midst of that,

  571. what Paul is doing

  572. is he's highlighting

  573. God's gracious work

  574. toward his people.

  575. God's gracious work

  576. toward his people.

  577. Note with me,

  578. if you will,

  579. the way in which

  580. he tells the story.

  581. Who is acting?

  582. What is the main character?

  583. Certainly we have Israel,

  584. God's people,

  585. in his summary.

  586. But who's the main character?

  587. It's God.

  588. Verse 17,

  589. the God of this people,

  590. Israel,

  591. chose,

  592. God chose our fathers

  593. and made the people great

  594. during their stay

  595. in the land of Egypt.

  596. He did it.

  597. He accomplished it

  598. through human means.

  599. They were doing things

  600. to be prolific

  601. and grow in numbers.

  602. But he did it.

  603. And with uplifted arm,

  604. he led them out of it.

  605. God delivered them

  606. from Egypt.

  607. And for 40 years,

  608. he put up with them

  609. in the wilderness

  610. and all of their unbelief

  611. and all of their wickedness.

  612. He put up with them

  613. graciously.

  614. Verse 19,

  615. after destroying

  616. seven nations,

  617. this is God.

  618. God destroyed seven nations.

  619. He used the army

  620. to do so,

  621. but it was God

  622. that did it.

  623. He gave them their land

  624. as an inheritance.

  625. All this took

  626. 450 years.

  627. And after that,

  628. again,

  629. God gave them judges

  630. until Samuel the prophet.

  631. Judges entered the scene

  632. from time to time

  633. as it was necessary.

  634. As the people of God

  635. needed some special intervention,

  636. he brought along the judges.

  637. Samuel was the last one,

  638. also a prophet.

  639. The people of God

  640. asked for a king.

  641. They wanted to be

  642. like other people.

  643. They didn't want to be

  644. in a theocracy any longer.

  645. They wanted to be ruled.

  646. I would suggest

  647. as a judgment,

  648. God gave them

  649. exactly what they asked for.

  650. He gave them Saul.

  651. And when he had removed him,

  652. verse 22,

  653. God removed Saul.

  654. He raised up another king.

  655. And that is David.

  656. So see how Paul's

  657. walking through

  658. and emphasizing

  659. God's gracious work.

  660. And he's leading his listeners

  661. to the culmination,

  662. this climactic point

  663. of all of these events.

  664. Right?

  665. He's taking them to David

  666. and he's getting their minds

  667. to rest for a moment

  668. on David

  669. who was so revered.

  670. He was the king.

  671. This was the high point

  672. in Jewish history

  673. at the time.

  674. It had never been better

  675. for the Jews

  676. than when David

  677. was king.

  678. But he's pressing on

  679. beyond that

  680. in the rest of our text.

  681. God's gracious work

  682. finds its high point

  683. in the life,

  684. death,

  685. and resurrection

  686. of Jesus Christ.

  687. It doesn't stop

  688. with David.

  689. Right?

  690. It wasn't the best

  691. it will ever be

  692. in David.

  693. It finds its high point

  694. in the life,

  695. death,

  696. and resurrection

  697. of Jesus Christ.

  698. All roads

  699. lead to Golgotha

  700. and they emanate

  701. from it.

  702. We'll see it that way.

  703. All roads lead to Golgotha,

  704. the life,

  705. the death,

  706. and the resurrection

  707. of Jesus Christ

  708. and they all emanate

  709. back out from it.

  710. We're part of that story today.

  711. Praise the Lord

  712. that human history

  713. has meaning

  714. and it has bearing

  715. because of Christ.

  716. Come Lord Jesus

  717. before January.

  718. Second,

  719. we see Paul

  720. preach Jesus Christ

  721. as the fulfillment

  722. of prophecy.

  723. There's so much

  724. in here.

  725. There's a lot

  726. to be said.

  727. I'm going to say

  728. a little about it.

  729. Verses 23

  730. through 37.

  731. Paul points out

  732. that the Jews

  733. in Jerusalem

  734. were used by God

  735. to fulfill

  736. the prophecy

  737. of Scripture.

  738. Common questions

  739. that would have been asked

  740. abroad

  741. by adherents

  742. to Judaism.

  743. Those who were looking

  744. to the Messiah,

  745. they understood

  746. that the Scripture

  747. taught this coming

  748. of a Messiah.

  749. They most often

  750. misunderstood it.

  751. They thought

  752. that the Messiah

  753. was going to come

  754. and deliver them

  755. from Roman rule.

  756. We know now

  757. that that's not the case.

  758. Jesus Christ came

  759. and delivered us

  760. from the rule

  761. of the dominion

  762. of darkness.

  763. A much bigger thing

  764. was happening

  765. than just a deliverance

  766. from Roman oppression.

  767. So they misunderstood it

  768. but they were looking

  769. to this Messiah

  770. and they would have wondered

  771. how is it

  772. if this Jesus

  773. was the Messiah

  774. how is it

  775. that he was killed?

  776. That doesn't make

  777. any sense to us.

  778. So he shows

  779. that the way

  780. in which he was killed

  781. was a fulfillment

  782. of the prophecy.

  783. Verse 27

  784. for those who live

  785. in Jerusalem

  786. and their rulers

  787. because they did not

  788. recognize him

  789. nor understand

  790. the utterances

  791. of the prophets

  792. which are read

  793. every Sabbath.

  794. So they didn't get it.

  795. They didn't know

  796. who Jesus was

  797. and because of that

  798. they fulfilled them

  799. by condemning him.

  800. The last part

  801. of verse 27.

  802. They fulfilled

  803. the prophecy

  804. concerning the Christ

  805. by condemning him.

  806. And though they found him

  807. no guilt worthy of death

  808. they asked Pilate

  809. to have him executed.

  810. And when they had carried out

  811. this verse 29

  812. when they had carried out

  813. all that was written

  814. of him

  815. when they had carried it out

  816. all that was written

  817. of him

  818. all the things

  819. that were meant

  820. to come to death

  821. the very specific way

  822. in which he was meant

  823. to die

  824. they took him down

  825. from the tree

  826. and they laid him

  827. in a tomb.

  828. Paul points out

  829. that the Jews

  830. in Jerusalem

  831. were used by God

  832. to fulfill

  833. the prophecy

  834. of scripture.

  835. Paul tells them

  836. then the good news

  837. of a resurrected Christ.

  838. This is how

  839. the Messiah

  840. could have been killed.

  841. He's no longer dead.

  842. He's not dead

  843. anymore.

  844. Verse 30

  845. But

  846. God

  847. my favorite conjunction

  848. love it when the scriptures say

  849. but

  850. God

  851. God intervening

  852. God working graciously

  853. amongst his people

  854. but God

  855. raised him

  856. from the dead.

  857. Praise the Lord.

  858. And for many days

  859. he appeared to those

  860. who had come up with him

  861. from Galilee

  862. to Jerusalem

  863. the apostles

  864. who were now

  865. his witnesses

  866. to the people.

  867. We have this evidencing

  868. he did in fact

  869. raise from the dead.

  870. He was with

  871. the apostles

  872. and they are his witnesses

  873. to the people.

  874. And we

  875. bring you

  876. the good news

  877. the euangelion.

  878. We now bring

  879. the good news

  880. Jesus Christ

  881. the gospel

  882. that what God

  883. promised

  884. to the fathers

  885. has come to pass.

  886. Paul references

  887. in this section

  888. of our text

  889. three well known

  890. and well respected

  891. prophets.

  892. He knows his audience.

  893. He's speaking to a people

  894. who knew

  895. these men.

  896. The Old Testament

  897. David

  898. David the king

  899. also a prophet

  900. writer of many of the Psalms

  901. and Isaiah

  902. the prophet

  903. prophet of hope

  904. who preached Christ

  905. long before Christ

  906. was on the scene.

  907. He also references

  908. another prophet

  909. that they would have known

  910. John the Baptist.

  911. That's who he's talking about

  912. when he talks about John

  913. offering a baptism

  914. of repentance.

  915. I like

  916. some people like to call him

  917. John the Baptizer

  918. because he wasn't the first Baptist.

  919. He didn't start

  920. the Southern Baptist denomination.

  921. He was John who baptized.

  922. And they would have known of him.

  923. They would have heard of him.

  924. People had been traveling

  925. for miles

  926. and miles

  927. and miles

  928. to come and be baptized

  929. by John.

  930. Likely some of the people

  931. in this congregation

  932. had been baptized

  933. by John.

  934. And so Paul references him.

  935. He uses things

  936. that John said

  937. to say

  938. I'm not the Christ.

  939. The Christ is coming.

  940. I'm not even worthy

  941. to untie

  942. his

  943. sandals.

  944. He shows

  945. how all of these prophets

  946. were pointing

  947. to Jesus.

  948. And he does so

  949. in the fulfillment

  950. of three prophetic promises

  951. concerning the resurrection

  952. of Christ.

  953. This is the primary thing

  954. he's driving us to.

  955. He's pointing us to.

  956. Verse 30 again.

  957. But God

  958. raised him

  959. from the dead.

  960. They killed him

  961. in the fulfillment

  962. of what was written

  963. but God

  964. raised him

  965. from the dead

  966. as it was

  967. written.

  968. It's essentially

  969. what he's going on

  970. to say.

  971. He shows

  972. how they're all

  973. pointing to Christ

  974. in the fulfillment

  975. of three prophetic promises

  976. concerning the resurrection

  977. of Christ.

  978. Verse 33.

  979. God

  980. raised up

  981. Jesus.

  982. He has fulfilled

  983. to us

  984. their children

  985. by raising

  986. Jesus.

  987. As also it is written

  988. in the second psalm

  989. you are my son

  990. today

  991. I have

  992. begotten you.

  993. This is

  994. Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2:7

  995. verse 7.

  996. I love that Clay read

  997. I don't know if he knew

  998. that that was

  999. in this chapter

  1000. today or not

  1001. but it's wonderful

  1002. that he read it

  1003. either way.

  1004. Psalm chapter 2

    Psalms 2:7

  1005. verse 7.

  1006. You are my son

  1007. today

  1008. I have

  1009. begotten you.

  1010. God the Father

  1011. talking to God

  1012. the Son

  1013. predicts not only

  1014. Christ's incarnation

  1015. but also

  1016. his resurrection

  1017. which magnified

  1018. Jesus'

  1019. sonship.

  1020. He is the Son

  1021. forever.

  1022. God raised up

  1023. Jesus.

  1024. God raised up

  1025. Jesus with

  1026. finality.

  1027. Verse 34.

  1028. And as

  1029. for the fact

  1030. that he raised

  1031. him from the dead

  1032. no more

  1033. to return

  1034. to corruption

  1035. he has spoken

  1036. in this way.

  1037. This is an

  1038. interesting one.

  1039. For the fact

  1040. that he raised

  1041. him from the dead

  1042. no more to return

  1043. to corruption

  1044. he has spoken

  1045. in this way

  1046. I will give you

  1047. the holy

  1048. and sure blessings

  1049. of David.

  1050. How do those

  1051. two things

  1052. relate?

  1053. Isaiah 55.3

  1054. I will give you

  1055. the holy and sure

  1056. blessings

  1057. of David.

  1058. Paul is saying

  1059. that God

  1060. had said that

  1061. in regards

  1062. to the fact

  1063. that he raised

  1064. Jesus from the dead

  1065. no more to return

  1066. to corruption.

  1067. So he has been

  1068. raised from the dead

  1069. he won't go back

  1070. to being dead

  1071. he won't be corrupted

  1072. by that they mean

  1073. decayed

  1074. he won't be thrown

  1075. in as many

  1076. crucified people

  1077. were into a

  1078. mass pit

1079. he was put in a

  1080. tomb

  1081. but he was raised

  1082. he didn't see

  1083. corruption

  1084. he was raised

  1085. from the dead

  1086. how do those

  1087. things connect?

  1088. And I believe

  1089. they connect

  1090. because a dead

  1091. Christ could not

  1092. have been the

  1093. assurance of

  1094. promises made

  1095. to David

  1096. a king to rule

  1097. forevermore

  1098. it wouldn't make

  1099. sense that it

  1100. would be that

  1101. and his life

  1102. now is the

  1103. assurance of

  1104. that promise

  1105. the fact that

  1106. Jesus is alive

  1107. today and he

  1108. will no longer

  1109. return to corruption

  1110. is the assurance

  1111. of the promises

  1112. that God gave

  1113. to David

  1114. that he would

  1115. in the lineage

  1116. of David

  1117. raise up

  1118. a king

  1119. who would rule

  1120. forevermore

  1121. over his people

  1122. third

  1123. God did not

  1124. allow Jesus

  1125. to see

  1126. decay

  1127. mention that

  1128. to some length

  1129. right

  1130. he was raised

  1131. from the dead

  1132. after three days

  1133. verse 35

  1134. and 37

  1135. or excuse me

  1136. through 37

  1137. therefore he says

  1138. in another psalm

  1139. you will not let

  1140. your holy one

  1141. see corruption

  1142. that's psalm

  1143. 16

  1144. 10

  1145. and then he

  1146. uses a little

  1147. logic for us

  1148. right

  1149. who is it that

  1150. God is talking

  1151. concerning

  1152. right

  1153. as David writes

  1154. this prophetic

  1155. psalm

  1156. you will not let

  1157. your holy one

  1158. see corruption

  1159. well it's Christ

  1160. because

  1161. verse 36

  1162. for David

  1163. after he served

  1164. the purpose of God

  1165. in his own generation

  1166. fell asleep

  1167. and was laid

  1168. with his fathers

  1169. and saw corruption

  1170. right

  1171. David decayed

  1172. he died

  1173. he decayed

  1174. he didn't live

  1175. forever

  1176. on earth

  1177. verse 37

  1178. but he whom

  1179. God raised up

  1180. did not

  1181. see corruption

  1182. so these are

  1183. the ways

  1184. in which

  1185. Paul drives

  1186. that Jesus

  1187. is the fulfillment

  1188. of these prophecies

  1189. he is in fact

  1190. the Christ

  1191. the one that you've

  1192. been waiting

  1193. for

1194. why does all that matter

  1195. like what's

  1196. what's the point

  1197. what is it that

  1198. we gain from

  1199. Jesus being

  1200. the Christ

  1201. well thirdly

  1202. Paul preaches

  1203. Jesus Christ

  1204. as the justifier

  1205. of the sinner

  1206. verses 38

  1207. through 41

  1208. this is really

  1209. the main point

  1210. the crux

  1211. of what

  1212. he has to say

  1213. to us today

  1214. let it be known

  1215. to you therefore

  1216. for everything

  1217. that we've said

  1218. about Jesus

  1219. being the Christ

  1220. brothers

  1221. that through

  1222. this man

  1223. forgiveness

  1224. of sins

  1225. is proclaimed

  1226. to you

  1227. and by him

  1228. everyone who

  1229. believes

  1230. is freed

  1231. from everything

  1232. from which

  1233. you could not

  1234. be freed

  1235. by the law

  1236. of Bovisus

  1237. now in the ESV

  1238. freed

  1239. could be rendered

  1240. justified

  1241. I like that better

  1242. I like the word

  1243. justified

  1244. better

  1245. justified

1246. should not be for you

  1247. a high churchy word

  1248. you need to understand

  1249. what it means

  1250. the biblical word

  1251. you should understand

  1252. what it means

  1253. in simplest of terms

  1254. to be justified

  1255. would be like

  1256. standing for a judge

  1257. guilty of something

  1258. and being dismissed

  1259. of that charge

  1260. being let go

  1261. you're no longer guilty

  1262. there's no guilt

  1263. found with you

  1264. at all

  1265. in a broader way

  1266. in a more biblical

  1267. way

1268. if we believed in Christ

1269. not only has the debt

  1270. of our sin

  1271. been cancelled

  1272. but we've also been

  1273. granted his righteousness

  1274. and both are necessary

1275. for us to be saved

  1276. we have to not

  1277. be guilty

  1278. of transgressing

  1279. the law

1280. but we also have to

  1281. have kept the law

  1282. perfectly

  1283. there's two sides there

  1284. which is why Jesus

  1285. came and lived

  1286. that's why he didn't

  1287. just come

  1288. die

  1289. he came and lived

  1290. a perfect life

  1291. he amassed righteousness

  1292. he never sinned

1293. so that we could have

  1294. his sinlessness

  1295. it's often called

  1296. his act of obedience

  1297. right

  1298. it's very important

  1299. he died

1300. bore the wrath of God

  1301. for our sin

  1302. took

  1303. God never just says

  1304. eh

  1305. I'm just going to

  1306. overlook sin

  1307. can't do that

  1308. as a just God

  1309. he can't do it

1310. he has to punish sin

  1311. he punished our sin

  1312. in Christ

  1313. so that the record

  1314. could be cancelled

  1315. the two sides

  1316. that's what it means

  1317. to be justified

  1318. that's why I think

  1319. freed is kind of

  1320. a weak word

  1321. when you think

  1322. of all

  1323. of that

  1324. right

  1325. let it be known

  1326. to you therefore

  1327. brothers

  1328. that through this

  1329. man forgiveness

  1330. is proclaimed

  1331. to you

  1332. and by him

  1333. everyone who

  1334. believes

  1335. is justified

  1336. from everything

  1337. from which you

  1338. could not be

  1339. justified

  1340. by the law

  1341. of Moses

  1342. Paul's listeners

  1343. were very aware

  1344. of this

  1345. they knew the law

  1346. and they knew

  1347. their inability

  1348. to keep the law

  1349. Paul writes later

  1350. in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

1351. for by works of the law

  1352. no human being

  1353. will be justified

  1354. in God's sight

  1355. since through the law

  1356. comes knowledge

  1357. of sin

  1358. but now

  1359. the righteousness

  1360. of God

  1361. has been manifested

  1362. apart from the law

  1363. although the law

  1364. and the prophets

  1365. bear witness to it

  1366. the point we're making

  1367. right

  1368. point two

  1369. our need of

  1370. Christ

  1371. verse 22

  1372. Romans 3

  1373. the righteousness

  1374. of God

  1375. through faith

  1376. in Jesus Christ

  1377. for all who believes

1378. for there is no distinction

  1379. Galatians 3

  1380. 10

  1381. for all who rely

1382. on works of the law

  1383. are under a curse

  1384. for it is written

  1385. right

  1386. as listeners would have

  1387. been aware of

  1388. Deuteronomy 27

  1389. 26

  1390. cursed

  1391. be everyone

  1392. who does not abide

  1393. by all things

  1394. written in the book

  1395. of the law

  1396. and do them

  1397. never able to gain

  1398. favor with God

  1399. by our works

  1400. it's the beautiful thing

  1401. about the Christian religion

  1402. different from

  1403. every other

  1404. religion

  1405. and of course

1406. I would suggest to you

1407. it's the only true religion

  1408. that we now

  1409. having been justified

  1410. are obedient

  1411. as a gracious response

1412. to what God has done

  1413. for us in Christ

  1414. right

  1415. we're obedient now

  1416. we keep the law

  1417. now because

  1418. we've been freed

  1419. from the penalty

  1420. of not being able

  1421. to keep the law

  1422. it's a gracious response

  1423. to that

  1424. not that we're driving

  1425. we're trying

  1426. we're trying

  1427. we're trying

  1428. to gain God's favor

  1429. right

  1430. by faith in Christ

  1431. we are justified

  1432. John Bunyan

  1433. familiar with

  1434. the old Puritan

  1435. John Bunyan

  1436. wrote a wonderful book

  1437. called

  1438. The Pilgrim's Progress

1439. and you have to read it

  1440. if you're a believer

  1441. trade in your

  1442. purpose driven life boxers

  1443. for a copy

  1444. of The Pilgrim's Progress

  1445. and read this book

  1446. and in the book

  1447. it's about

  1448. a man named Christian

  1449. who's going on a journey

  1450. to the celestial city

  1451. it's an allegory

  1452. of the Christian life

  1453. and he has a

  1454. a co-patriot

  1455. with him

  1456. along the way

  1457. by the name

  1458. of Faithful

  1459. and there's a point

  1460. at which they meet

  1461. and Faithful is

  1462. recounting his story

  1463. of his journey

  1464. so far

  1465. he's encountering

  1466. some of the same

  1467. things that Christian

  1468. has encountered

  1469. and he's telling

  1470. his story

  1471. I love this

  1472. where he speaks

  1473. of encountering

  1474. Moses

  1475. so this is Faithful

  1476. speaking to Christian

  1477. about Moses

  1478. so soon as

  1479. the man

  1480. overtook me

  1481. Moses

1482. it was but a word

  1483. and a blow

1484. for down he knocked me

  1485. and laid me

  1486. for dead

  1487. but when I was a little

  1488. come to myself again

  1489. I asked him

  1490. wherefore

  1491. why

  1492. he served me

  1493. so

  1494. he said

  1495. because of my

  1496. secret inclining

  1497. to Adam

  1498. the first

  1499. because you're a human

  1500. born in sin

  1501. and with that

  1502. he struck me

  1503. another deadly blow

  1504. on the breast

  1505. and beat me

  1506. down backward

  1507. so I lay

  1508. at his foot

  1509. as dead

  1510. as before

  1511. so when I came

  1512. to myself again

  1513. I cried him

  1514. mercy

  1515. but he said

  1516. I know not

  1517. how to show

  1518. mercy

  1519. and with that

  1520. he knocked me

  1521. down again

  1522. so you see

  1523. what he's saying

  1524. the law of Moses

  1525. right

  1526. the purpose

  1527. that it served

  1528. was to convince

  1529. of our sinfulness

  1530. right

  1531. it doesn't know

  1532. how to show mercy

  1533. right

  1534. it's just law

  1535. like here's the standard

  1536. keep it

1537. but we can keep it

  1538. we can keep it

  1539. we need another way

  1540. in Christ

  1541. and Bunyan

  1542. writes on

  1543. he had doubtless

1544. made an end of me

  1545. but that one

  1546. came by

  1547. speaking of Christ

  1548. and bid him

  1549. forbear

  1550. stop

  1551. right

  1552. it's wonderful

  1553. it's wonderful

  1554. so he tells them

  1555. right

  1556. believe

  1557. this is the gospel

  1558. of Jesus Christ

  1559. you can be justified

  1560. from your lawlessness

  1561. in a way

1562. that the law of Moses

  1563. could never

  1564. have done

  1565. for you

  1566. and he warns them

  1567. he says

  1568. beware

  1569. therefore

  1570. lest what is said

  1571. in the prophets

  1572. should come about

  1573. and he references

  1574. Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 1:5

  1575. chapter 1

  1576. verse 5

  1577. it's a very

  1578. interesting

  1579. reference

  1580. to make

  1581. his point

  1582. Habakkuk 1

  1583. 5

  1584. foretells

  1585. of the destruction

  1586. of Judah

  1587. by the Chaldeans

  1588. and the Chaldeans

  1589. if you care

  1590. about such a thing

  1591. are the southern

  1592. Babylonians

  1593. right

  1594. southern people

  1595. are always

  1596. the nastiest people

  1597. aren't they

  1598. he raises up

  1599. Habakkuk 1

  1600. 5

  1601. says

  1602. a people

  1603. an evil people

  1604. as a judgment

  1605. against

  1606. wicked

  1607. Israel

  1608. now this happened

  1609. like

  1610. you could say

  1611. Habakkuk 1

  1612. 5 was fulfilled

  1613. though

  1614. wasn't it

  1615. because in fact

  1616. the Chaldeans

  1617. did come

  1618. and they did

  1619. rout

  1620. through

  1621. Israel

  1622. and they did

  1623. bring destruction

  1624. to Judah

  1625. yes

  1626. but Paul

  1627. references it

  1628. here

  1629. for future

  1630. destruction

  1631. beware

  1632. lest the

  1633. final judgment

  1634. is what he's

  1635. using Habakkuk

  1636. 1 5

  1637. to say

  1638. be true

  1639. of you

  1640. that you

  1641. don't believe

  1642. in this

  1643. Christ

  1644. and that

  1645. you're

  1646. utterly

  1647. destroyed

  1648. for being

  1649. disobedient

  1650. to God

  1651. only by

  1652. faith in

  1653. Christ

  1654. one be

  1655. justified

  1656. before God

  1657. Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4:12

  1658. verse 12

  1659. Peter

  1660. another wonderful

  1661. sermon in the

  1662. book of Acts

  1663. preaching to the

  1664. council

  1665. the Sanhedrin

  1666. said in there

  1667. salvation

  1668. and no one

  1669. else

  1670. for there is

  1671. no other

  1672. name under

  1673. heaven given

  1674. among men

  1675. by which

  1676. we must be

  1677. saved

  1678. believe in

  1679. Christ

  1680. believe in

  1681. Christ

  1682. by faith in

  1683. Christ we are

  1684. set free

  1685. from the

  1686. condemnation

  1687. of the law

  1688. this date

  1689. November 13th

  1690. in the year

  1691. 354

  1692. Augustine

  1693. of Hippo

  1694. was born

  1695. so it's

  1696. fitting that

  1697. we quote

  1698. him today

  1699. Augustine

  1700. once wrote

  1701. thus

  1702. a good

  1703. man

  1704. though a

  1705. slave

  1706. is free

  1707. but a

  1708. wicked

  1709. man

  1710. though a

  1711. king

  1712. is a

  1713. slave

  1714. for he

  1715. serves

  1716. not one

  1717. man alone

  1718. but what

  1719. is worse

  1720. as many

  1721. masters

  1722. as he

  1723. has

  1724. vices

  1725. be set

  1726. free

  1727. in

  1728. Christ

  1729. from the

  1730. condemnation

  1731. of the

  1732. law

  1733. by believing

  1734. in him

  1735. and then we

  1736. see in the

  1737. concluding two

  1738. verses that

  1739. Paul's preaching

  1740. bears fruit

  1741. as they went

  1742. out the people

  1743. begged that

  1744. these things

  1745. might be told

  1746. them the

  1747. next sabbath

  1748. I would

  1749. someday love

  1750. for somebody

  1751. to beg me

  1752. to preach

  1753. next Sunday

  1754. I'm kidding

  1755. I think you

  1756. guys know

  1757. I'm coming

  1758. back

  1759. and after

  1760. the meeting

  1761. of the

  1762. synagogue

  1763. broke up

  1764. many Jews

  1765. and devout

  1766. converts

  1767. these are

  1768. these proselytites

  1769. to Judaism

  1770. followed Paul

  1771. and Barnabas

  1772. who as they

  1773. spoke with

  1774. them urged

  1775. them to

  1776. continue in

  1777. the grace

  1778. of God

  1779. so we see

  1780. some evidence

  1781. of people

  1782. turning to

  1783. the truth

  1784. of God

  1785. to what

  1786. degree we

  1787. don't know

  1788. but clearly

  1789. Paul and

  1790. Barnabas

  1791. see the

  1792. grace of

  1793. God

  1794. working in

  1795. them

  1796. that they're

  1797. hearing the

  1798. truth

  1799. they're at

  1800. least hungry

  1801. to hear more

  1802. of the truth

  1803. as they

  1804. follow them

  1805. along

  1806. so in

  1807. closing I

  1808. want to

  1809. remind you

  1810. of Paul's

  1811. three exhortations

  1812. verse 16

  1813. particularly for

  1814. those who

  1815. aren't in

  1816. Christ this

  1817. morning

  1818. listen

  1819. listen to

  1820. the good

  1821. news

  1822. of Jesus

  1823. Christ

  1824. your judgment

  1825. is sure

  1826. and it is

  1827. coming

  1828. beware

  1829. lest what

  1830. is said

  1831. in the

  1832. prophets

  1833. should come

  1834. about

  1835. and believe

  1836. believe

  1837. believe

  1838. through this

  1839. man

  1840. through

  1841. Christ

  1842. forgiveness

  1843. of sins

  1844. is

  1845. proclaimed

  1846. to you

  1847. everyone

  1848. who

  1849. believes

  1850. is justified

  1851. from

  1852. everything

  1853. that the

  1854. law of

  1855. Moses

  1856. could not

  1857. justify

  1858. us

  1859. from

  1860. and I

  1861. want to

  1862. add one

  1863. additional

  1864. exhortation

  1865. beyond our

  1866. text this

  1867. morning

  1868. and that

  1869. is that

  1870. you preach

  1871. like

  1872. Paul

  1873. preach

  1874. like

  1875. Paul

  1876. if you

  1877. are a

  1878. Christian

  1879. it has

  1880. been

  1881. granted

  1882. to you

  1883. the

  1884. privilege

  1885. of getting

  1886. to proclaim

  1887. the good

  1888. news

  1889. of Jesus

  1890. Christ

  1891. it does

  1892. not mean

  1893. necessarily

  1894. that you

  1895. will preach

  1896. like

  1897. this

  1898. on a

  1899. Sunday

  1900. morning

  1901. from a

  1902. stage

  1903. with a

  1904. lapel

  1905. mic

  1906. it doesn't

  1907. necessarily

  1908. mean that

  1909. but it

  1910. has been

  1911. given

  1912. to you

  1913. the task

  1914. of heralding

  1915. the coming

  1916. of Christ

  1917. speaking

  1918. the good

  1919. news

  1920. of Jesus

  1921. to people

  1922. do that

  1923. with the

  1924. Bible

  1925. preach

  1926. like

  1927. Paul

  1928. it's

  1929. what

  1930. people

  1931. desperately

  1932. need
