  1. If you will please take out your copy of God's Word, I hope you have it here with you today.

  2. and turn or swipe your way to Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  3. Our text for today is Acts chapter 13, verses 44 through 52.

    Acts 13:44–52

  4. And while you're getting there, thank the band for leading us well in music.

  5. This morning, Liz, you may or may not have noticed, I hope you've noticed, she's very pregnant, seven months.

  6. And she was dizzy, and she said, I don't know if I can sing this morning.

  7. And I said, please sing that song particularly.

  8. I don't know if I had anything to do with her getting up and singing or not,

  9. but she decided to sit on a stool, which I'm really, really thankful for.

  10. And I'm thankful that Wes, in giving leadership to the band, sees his ministry not as separate from ministry of preaching the Word,

  11. but he sees it as the same, and that is that he ministers to us the Word of God in song.

  12. It's a wonderful thing that we should treasure together.

  13. So Acts chapter 13, but before we get to this week's text, I want to remind you what happened in last week's text.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  14. After proclaiming the gospel on the island of Cyprus, Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark sailed northwest back to the mainland.

  15. At this point, John Mark leaves his companions and returns to Jerusalem.

  16. We don't know exactly why, but it was probably because the danger of the journey that was ahead of them and the likelihood of further persecution.

  17. Paul and Barnabas then go from the coast and travel 100 miles north through the Taurus Mountains to Antioch in Pisidia,

  18. which is not to be confused with the Antioch that they were originally commissioned from.

  19. There's lots of Antiochs in the area that's now modern Turkey in that day.

  20. In Antioch in Pisidia, they attend the synagogue on the Sabbath where they are asked to speak,

  21. probably because Paul was an understudy of the well-known rabbi Gamaliel.

  22. So they likely knew who he was or he had told them who he had studied underneath,

  23. and he's asked to speak to address the congregation on that day.

  24. Next, we observe the first and longest of Paul's sermons in which Paul preaches Jesus Christ.

  25. Let me clarify that statement, the recorded of his sermons.

  26. Luke records it here for us.

  27. Paul preaches Christ as the culmination of human history, as the fulfillment of prophecy,

  28. and as the justifier of the sinner.

  29. And he calls his listeners to believe in this message, the gospel that he is preaching to them.

  30. Verse 42 and 43 of Acts 13 reads, was kind of the summary of last week's text.

  31. As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.

  32. And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas,

  33. who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

  34. So we see a favorable response to the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  35. and they've asked him to come back the following week.

  36. Would have been a Saturday to preach more.

  37. And this brings us to our text today, beginning in verse 44 and through the end of the chapter.

  38. The next Sabbath, almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.

  39. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.

  40. And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying,

  41. It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you,

  42. since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life.

  43. Behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

  44. For so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

  45. I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

  46. And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord,

  47. and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

  48. And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.

  49. But the Jews, inside of the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city,

  50. stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.

  51. But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.

  52. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  53. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  54. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  55. We would all do well to listen to it this morning in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  56. So we see Paul and Barnabas return to the synagogue on the next Sabbath, verse 44.

  57. And this amazing thing that almost, Luke records for us, the whole city gathered to hear.

  58. Isn't this a wonderful work of God that almost the whole city gathered?

  59. There were no flyers mailed out.

  60. There's no promise of entertainment whatsoever.

  61. But simply to hear the word of the Lord.

  62. What a work of God to bring together a city in this way.

  63. Not to be entertained, but to hear the gospel preached.

  64. Luke does not record for us what was said by Paul.

  65. But we do know that Paul speaks.

  66. We know this because verse 45 tells us that Paul spoke.

  67. The Jews were responding to what he had said.

  68. And I think it's proper to presume that he spoke as he did the week before.

  69. I am sure that Paul spoke to them of the crucified and resurrected Christ.

  70. I am sure now having an audience gathered that is both Jew and Gentile.

  71. He spoke to them of a sovereign ruler of heaven and earth who created all things.

  72. Who set up a standard in the garden.

  73. A single rule that Adam transgressed and brought sin to all of mankind.

  74. I am sure that he spoke to them of the law.

  75. Which laid out for them a standard by which God would be pleased.

  76. And then expressed our complete and utter inability to keep that law.

  77. I am sure that he told them of the great separation that existed between them and God.

  78. Because of their sinfulness.

  79. Which would have pressed upon him the necessity of preaching good news.

  80. After telling them the bad news.

  81. The good news of Christ.

  82. Come to earth.

  83. Taking the form of a man.

  84. Fully God.

  85. Fully man.

  86. Living a perfect life.

  87. Obtaining the righteousness of God that the law requires.

  88. So that by faith in him we could have that righteousness.

  89. But not just that.

  90. Dying the death of a sinner on the cross.

  91. Bearing in his body the wrath that was due them and us for their sin.

  92. Then in there Jesus was resurrected.

  93. And is seated with the Father now.

  94. Wes mentioned earlier.

  95. Making intercession for us.

  96. Because he's alive we can have life.

  97. I'm sure that Paul proclaimed the gospel once again.

  98. It was his call.

  99. As it is ours.

  100. To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  101. 1 Corinthians 9.

  102. Verse 16.

  103. Paul says.

  104. For if I preach the gospel.

  105. That gives me no ground for boasting.

  106. For necessity is laid upon me.

  107. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel.

  108. I believe that Luke does not record for us the specifics of what Paul said.

  109. Because he intends for us to focus on the characters of this account.

  110. And their responses to Paul's gospel proclamation.

  111. So for the sake of your soul today.

  112. I want to draw your attention by making five observations of the text today.

  113. And I'll try to move through them quickly.

  114. I'm going to listen for you real quick.

  115. I'll readdress them.

  116. Because you won't be able to get these out.

  117. In pen.

  118. In the time I say them.

  119. So.

  120. They are.

  121. Number one.

  122. The persecution that accompanies gospel proclamation.

  123. Number two.

  124. The responsibility of mankind to respond to the gospel.

  125. Number three.

  126. The sovereignty of God and the salvation of his people.

  127. Number four.

  128. The evangelistic fervor of God's people.

  129. And number five.

  130. The unwavering commitment of Paul toward the Gentiles.

  131. So number one.

  132. First observation.

  133. The persecution that accompanies gospel proclamation.

  134. I hear you, Silas.

  135. He's saying data.

  136. I just want to point that out.

  137. The persecution that accompanies gospel proclamation.

  138. So the week before.

  139. They're very pleased.

  140. The Jews are.

  141. They're very pleased to have Paul proclaim the gospel to them.

  142. But when the Jews see the crowds.

  143. When it's no longer this elitist thing for them alone to hear this gospel proclamation.

  144. But almost an entire city is gathered now to hear what it is that Paul has to say.

  145. When they see the popularity of the message of Jesus Christ.

  146. They're filled with jealousy.

  147. Because it would seem that their elitist mindset.

  148. That they have been God's people for all of ages.

  149. Their special in some way was getting destroyed.

  150. And it made them jealous.

  151. Seeking the applause of men.

  152. They failed to seek the approval of God.

  153. And they begin to contradict what was spoken by Paul.

  154. They revile him.

  155. In the Greek, they blaspheme.

  156. They slander.

  157. They malign.

  158. They defame Paul.

  159. It's not just an emotion that they're feeling toward him.

  160. It's an action that's taking place.

  161. It's as the crowd is gathered.

  162. And as he's proclaiming the gospel.

  163. They're trying to discredit him at every turn.

  164. Verse 50 goes on and expands upon what goes beyond just this meeting.

  165. The Jews incited devout women and leading men.

  166. And they stirred up a persecution.

  167. We don't know the exact nature of it.

  168. But likely they wanted to cause them physical harm.

  169. And so Paul and Barnabas are driven out of the district.

  170. I will not grow tired of saying to this generation in this place where we live.

  171. Us in this place.

  172. Gospel proclamation and persecution are mutually inclusive.

  173. We're going to see this time and time and time again in the book of Acts.

  174. They are mutually inclusive, beloved.

  175. And persecution is going to take different shapes in different places.

  176. A couple of weeks ago we spent some devoted time praying for the persecuted church.

  177. And when we said that we meant the persecuted church abroad that's persecuted physically.

  178. Imprisoned.

  179. Beaten.

  180. Killed.

  181. For their faith.

  182. We don't want to belittle that.

  183. We don't want to make small the sacrifice of many believers around the world.

  184. But we are deluded if we think that we are devoid of such a thing because we're Americans.

  185. The world does not like the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  186. And if we are proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, we will experience pushback from it.

  187. Gospel proclamation and persecution are mutually inclusive.

  188. Jesus, our Lord, was crucified.

  189. He says in John chapter 15, verses 18 through 21,

    John 15:18–21

  190. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  191. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

  192. But because you were not of the world, but I chose you out of the world,

  193. therefore the world hates you.

  194. Verse 18 is conditional.

  195. Verse 19 is not.

  196. I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

  197. Remember the word that I said to you.

  198. A servant is not greater than his master.

  199. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  200. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  201. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

  202. What Jesus spoke to the apostles was already proving true.

  203. In Acts chapter 3, Peter and John are arrested for preaching Christ.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  204. They stand trial in chapter 4 and are charged to speak no more to anyone in the name of Jesus.

  205. In chapter 6, a deacon named Stephen is falsely accused, arrested.

  206. And in chapter 7, serves the kingdom of God as the first Christian martyr when he is stoned to death.

  207. We can read of a great persecution that arises in Jerusalem in chapter 8,

  208. which causes the church to scatter and the gospel message with them.

  209. In chapter 12, the apostle James is killed by Herod, and Peter is imprisoned, then miraculously set free.

  210. At the beginning of chapter 13, Paul and Barnabas are opposed by a magician named Elimus on the island of Cyprus.

  211. And now, at the end of chapter 13, the theme remains, and it will continue on.

  212. Gospel proclamation and persecution are mutually inclusive.

  213. If you do not suffer in the name of Christ, then you are not following him.

  214. If someone is not offended, if someone doesn't call you names, if someone doesn't want to spend time with you,

  215. if you don't lose a job or are passed over for a promotion,

  216. if your grade suffers in a particular class, then you're not following Christ.

  217. It's going to take many shapes and forms.

  218. I don't want you to make anything I just said absolute, and I certainly don't want you to go seek it.

  219. But if you are proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  220. some people will treasure that, some people will listen to the words that you say,

  221. and some will hate you for it.

  222. Verse 19, John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  223. If you are of the world, the world will love you as its own.

  224. Beloved, if you are in Christ, and you are living as the world lives,

  225. the world will love you.

  226. But if you don't live as the world lives, but because you are not of the world,

  227. but I chose you out of the world, the world will hate you.

  228. Secondly, the responsibility of mankind to respond to the gospel.

  229. The responsibility of mankind to respond to the gospel.

  230. People are accountable to their decisions to accept or reject the gospel message.

  231. You'll note in our text today that the crowd is divided along ethnic lines.

  232. I find that fascinating.

  233. Who's to know if there's not some mixture here, I suppose?

  234. Acts 13, we see Jews and converts to Judaism, known as proselytes.

  235. Last week I said proselytites seven times, and Wes pointed it out to me afterwards.

  236. Proselytes, converts to Judaism.

  237. Seem to be favorably following the encouragement in verse 43,

  238. is that they would continue in the grace of God.

  239. But Luke makes the record here, the Jews hated the gospel message,

  240. and the Gentiles responded favorably to it.

  241. One group accepted, the other group rejected.

  242. Luke simply records the Jews were jealous in verse 45,

  243. and that the Gentiles were rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord.

  244. Note what Paul and Barnabas say to their Jewish listeners.

  245. Verse 46,

  246. Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying it was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first.

  247. Since you thrusted aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life,

  248. behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

  249. Paul and Barnabas say to the Jews that they are condemning themselves by judging themselves unworthy

  250. by rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  251. If men are damned, it will only be because of their rejection of God and His ways.

  252. John 3, verse 18,

    John 3:18

  253. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,

  254. but whoever does not believe is condemned already,

  255. because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

  256. John 5, verse 40,

    John 5:40

  257. Jesus says,

  258. You refuse to come to me that you may have life.

  259. If you do not know Jesus Christ this morning,

  260. do not respond as the Jews did,

  261. thinking that they were pleasers of God,

  262. but being condemned for their rejection of Jesus.

  263. Be like the Gentiles.

  264. Rejoice and glorify God,

  265. for this can be the day of your salvation.

  266. Verse 48,

  267. When the Gentiles heard this,

  268. they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord.

  269. The gospel of Jesus Christ preached to them,

  270. and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

  271. Let's bring us to our third observation.

  272. So, second observation,

  273. mankind is responsible for their response to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  274. But thirdly,

  275. the sovereignty of God in the salvation of His people.

  276. Oh, this is a good one.

  277. And we could talk a long time about this.

  278. And as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

  279. Now, the Greek word for appointed means to inscribe or to enroll.

  280. To inscribe or to enroll.

  281. To write down a name.

  282. Psalm 69, verse 28.

    Psalms 69:28

  283. The psalmist says,

  284. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living.

  285. Let them not be enrolled among the righteous.

  286. Revelation 13, 8.

  287. All who dwell on earth will worship the beast.

  288. Everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world

  289. in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.

  290. So, there's an unrolling happening.

  291. And there's an unrolling that's happening before the foundation of the world.

  292. Ephesians 1, 4.

  293. God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.

  294. That we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  295. Now, many will take this phrase,

  296. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed,

  297. and try to flip it around on us.

  298. They would say, rather,

  299. As many as believed were appointed to eternal life.

  300. They'll give us some complex explanation of God

  301. and the way that God exists outside of time,

  302. which I certainly agree with.

  303. However, we don't simply look at the plain meaning of the text.

  304. The Greek does not allow us just to take it and flop it around.

  305. Right?

  306. Luke recorded, in this way,

  307. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

  308. There's a cause, and there's an effect.

  309. They were appointed, therefore, they believed.

  310. Beware of those who want to use exegetical tricks

  311. to do exegetical somersaults with a text

  312. to suit their purpose.

  313. There's an apparent paradox, right, presented here.

  314. I was going to read you a long J.I. Packer quote,

  315. but I forgot the book downstairs that it was in,

  316. so I'm not going to.

  317. If you know who J.I. Packer is,

  318. he's a contemporary theologian.

  319. When you're in good company,

  320. if the paradox tears at your mind a bit,

  321. ask me later, I'll read the quote to you.

  322. This apparent paradox is apparent contradiction,

  323. although it's not one at all,

  324. but the apparent one of man's responsibility

  325. and God's sovereignty.

  326. We can see here Paul and Barnabas saying to the Jews,

  327. right,

  328. you've rejected,

  329. you've dismissed,

  330. you've counted yourselves unworthy.

  331. But then Luke records for us

  332. that as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

  333. The Scripture teaches both things, beloved.

  334. Man is ultimately responsible

  335. and God is fully sovereign.

  336. If you have a problem

  337. with the doctrine of election,

  338. your problem is not with me

  339. or with a denomination

  340. or a historical figure.

  341. The problem is with the Scripture

  342. and therefore the God

  343. of the Scripture.

  344. If you have a problem

  345. with the doctrine of election,

  346. I want to very humbly

  347. and lovingly encourage you not to.

  348. It will benefit your soul

  349. to take up the promises of the Bible

  350. and they are sure

  351. because of God's sure purpose.

  352. The doctrine of election

  353. is always taught in the Scripture

  354. to give us a pillow

  355. to rest our heads upon.

  356. That is why it is taught, right,

  357. to those who are in Christ

  358. to know that we did nothing

  359. to find ourselves in Him

  360. and therefore we can do nothing

  361. to find ourselves outside of Him.

  362. He saves.

  363. He has worked.

  364. We're the recipients

  365. of this grand blessing.

  366. This is why it's taught

  367. a pillow to rest our heads upon

  368. and I like to say

  369. and never a rock

  370. to bash somebody over the head with.

  371. I believe here that Luke

  372. means to help us understand

  373. the broad rejection

  374. and the broad acceptance

  375. of Paul's gospel message

  376. by making this statement.

  377. Why?

  378. What is going on

  379. in redemptive history

  380. that Paul is preaching

  381. this gospel message

  382. and it seems a whole ethnicity

  383. rejects it

  384. and a whole ethnicity

  385. in this city receives it?

  386. What is happening here?

  387. And Luke simply says,

  388. and as many were appointed

  389. to eternal life,

  390. believed.

  391. God is at work.

  392. God is sovereignly

  393. making His plans

  394. come to pass.

  395. As God's people,

  396. we should treasure

  397. such doctrine.

  398. It is precious to us

  399. in so many ways.

  400. I want to take you

  401. to a place

  402. and show you

  403. just some of

  404. why I love

  405. the doctrine of election

  406. and I want you to turn

  407. there with me

  408. to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  409. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  410. is a grand chapter

  411. of the scripture.

  412. If you're not familiar,

  413. when I say turn to Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  414. and your mind doesn't start racing

  415. with wonderful things

  416. from Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  417. you need to study

  418. this chapter.

  419. Your assignment this week

  420. is to read Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  421. every day this week

  422. and just consider

  423. all that is given to us

  424. in Christ.

  425. I'll give you a couple of examples.

  426. It starts out,

  427. chapter 8 verse 1,

  428. there is therefore now

  429. no condemnation

  430. for those

  431. who are in Christ Jesus.

  432. No condemnation for us.

  433. We don't have to bear

  434. the guilt of sin

  435. any longer.

  436. We've been set free from it

  437. because we are

  438. in Christ.

  439. Praise God.

  440. Verse 15,

  441. for you do not receive

  442. the spirit of slavery

  443. to fall back into fear,

  444. but you have received

  445. the spirit of adoption

  446. as sons

  447. by whom we cry

  448. Abba,

  449. Father.

  450. We have God

  451. as our Father

  452. because we've been adopted

  453. as sons.

  454. Ladies,

  455. that's for you too.

  456. That's a promise for you

  457. with all of the privileges

  458. that came for sonship

  459. in this day.

  460. All of the blessing

  461. that comes with being

  462. the son of a father.

  463. We've been adopted

  464. as sons.

  465. Verse 18,

  466. for I consider

  467. that the sufferings

  468. of this present time

  469. are not even worthy

  470. to compare

  471. with the glory

  472. that is to be revealed

  473. to us.

  474. Right?

  475. Precious.

  476. Precious promises.

  477. Down to verse 28.

  478. Familiar to you,

  479. I hope.

  480. And we're going to read

  481. through the end of the chapter

  482. because I can't not

  483. at this point.

  484. And we know

  485. that for those

  486. who love God,

  487. all things work together

  488. for good.

  489. What a promise that is.

  490. Right?

  491. All things,

  492. everything we're walking

  493. through in this life,

  494. all of the troubles

  495. of this life

  496. are aimed

  497. and are good

  498. for those who are called

  499. according to His purpose.

  500. For those whom He foreknew,

  501. He also predestined

  502. to be conformed

  503. to the image of His Son

  504. in order that He might be

  505. the firstborn

  506. among many brothers.

  507. And those whom He predestined,

  508. He also called.

  509. And those whom He called,

  510. He also justified.

  511. And those whom He justified,

  512. He also glorified.

  513. Paul gives to us here

  514. in brief

  515. kind of what's called

  516. an ordo salutis.

  517. Right?

  518. The order of salvation.

  519. How did this all come to pass?

  520. And he's anchoring us

  521. in this reality

  522. that we have been chosen

  523. in Christ.

  524. Why?

  525. What do we do with this?

  526. Right?

  527. I'm making the point to you

  528. that this is a pillow

  529. to rest our heads on.

  530. Right?

  531. Rest easy, beloved.

  532. Verse 21.

  533. What then shall we say

  534. to these things?

  535. If God is for us,

  536. who can be against us?

  537. He who did not spare

  538. His own Son

  539. but gave Him up for us all,

  540. how will He not also

  541. with Him graciously

  542. give us all things?

  543. Who shall bring any charge

  544. against God's elect?

  545. It is God who justifies

  546. who is to condemn.

  547. Christ Jesus

  548. is the one who died

  549. more than that

  550. who was raised,

  551. who is at the right hand of God,

  552. who indeed

  553. is interceding for us.

  554. Who shall separate us

  555. from the love of Christ?

  556. Shall tribulation

  557. or distress

  558. or persecution

  559. or famine

  560. or nakedness

  561. or danger

  562. or sword?

  563. As it is written,

  564. for your sake

  565. we are being killed

  566. all the day long.

  567. We are regarded as sheep

  568. to be slaughtered.

  569. No, in all these things

  570. we are more than conquerors

  571. through Him

  572. who loved us.

  573. For I am sure

  574. that neither death

  575. nor life

  576. nor angels

  577. nor rulers

  578. nor things present

  579. nor things to come

  580. nor powers

  581. nor height

  582. nor depth

  583. nor anything else

  584. in all creation

  585. and put yourself

  586. in that category as well

  587. and you

  588. will be able

  589. to separate us

  590. from the love of God

  591. in Christ Jesus

  592. our Lord.

  593. It's beautiful, right?

  594. all of the goodness

  595. of God to us

  596. in Christ.

  597. And what happens

  598. at this point

  599. in Paul's letter?

  600. Remember that the chapter break

  601. is not inspired.

  602. He goes on to lament

  603. that there are those

  604. that are of His flesh,

  605. right?

  606. The Jews

  607. that do not believe.

  608. He goes right on to say,

  609. right,

  610. in light of God's

  611. elective purposes

  612. there are people

  613. who will not respond

  614. favorably to the gospel

  615. of Jesus Christ.

  616. He is broken over that.

  617. He wishes that

  618. He Himself

  619. could be accursed,

  620. cut off from Christ

  621. for the sake of them.

  622. That's verse 3.

  623. So in the midst

  624. of all of this

  625. speaking about election,

  626. Paul is not cold

  627. about it.

  628. Right?

  629. At all.

  630. Right?

  631. He's broken over it.

  632. He wants His brethren

  633. to know Christ.

  634. Verses 16-18.

  635. So that depends

  636. not on human will

  637. or exertion,

  638. but on God

  639. who has mercy.

  640. For the Scripture

  641. says to Pharaoh,

  642. for this very purpose

  643. I have raised you up

  644. that I might show

  645. my power in you

  646. and that my name

  647. might be proclaimed

  648. in all the earth.

  649. So then He has mercy

  650. on whomever He wills

  651. and He hardens

  652. whomever He wills.

  653. Beloved,

  654. this is difficult stuff

  655. to understand.

  656. Right?

  657. My mind is too little

  658. to entirely comprehend

  659. the great

  660. chasm

  661. that seems to exist

  662. but seeing the responsibility

  663. of man

  664. and the sovereignty

  665. of God.

  666. How do we reconcile

  667. these two things?

  668. I don't know

  669. that we actually can,

  670. but the Scripture

  671. teaches us to it

  672. for our benefit.

  673. You cannot have

  674. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  675. without Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  676. You just can't do it.

  677. You can't claim

  678. all of the promises

  679. of God to you

  680. in Christ

  681. without grasping

  682. hold of rightly

  683. the doctrine

  684. of election.

  685. So humbly

  686. and lovingly

  687. work through it,

  688. wrestle with it,

  689. study the Scripture,

  690. ask hard questions,

  691. and then embrace it.

  692. It's a glorious,

  693. glorious truth

  694. and it's meant

  695. to give us rest

  696. as God's people.

  697. Note fourthly,

  698. and I love that Luke

  699. did this,

  700. the evangelistic fervor

  701. of God's people

  702. in verse 49.

  703. Right after saying this,

  704. stating this massive

  705. elective truth,

  706. all who were appointed

  707. to eternal life

  708. believed.

  709. And then what happens?

  710. If the doctrine

  711. of election

  712. has ever slowed

  713. the advance of the Gospel

  714. is because it

  715. wasn't understood.

  716. I would argue

  717. historically

  718. that it never has,

  719. but if it ever has,

  720. it just wasn't rightly

  721. understood.

  722. Understanding God's

  723. purpose

  724. for His people

  725. in the world

  726. has historically

  727. driven people

  728. out

  729. to share the Gospel

  730. of Jesus Christ.

  731. I've shared this

  732. with you before,

  733. but you may not

  734. have heard it.

  735. When speaking

  736. of election,

  737. many people think

  738. of the name

  739. John Calvin.

  740. And for some people

  741. that name

  742. is a dirty word.

  743. Calvin,

  744. when he was in Geneva,

  745. pastored a church

  746. and he led,

  747. was the overseer

  748. of a seminary.

  749. And his seminary

  750. became known

  751. as the School of Death

  752. because as he gave

  753. pastors that were

  754. fleeing persecution

  755. from all over Europe

  756. that came to Geneva

  757. to learn more about God,

  758. as he taught them

  759. the doctrine of election

  760. and many other doctrines,

  761. not just this one,

  762. but many other doctrines,

  763. they were driven

  764. by a passion

  765. for God's glorious purpose

  766. with their people

  767. to go back home

  768. and most of them

  769. were martyred.

  770. It became known

  771. as Calvin's

  772. School of Death.

  773. Properly understanding

  774. God's purpose

  775. in the world

  776. drives evangelism.

  777. So note the evangelistic

  778. fervor of God's people,

  779. verse 49,

  780. and the word of the Lord

  781. was spreading

  782. throughout the whole region.

  783. Right?

  784. Different words

  785. have been used

  786. in this text.

  787. District,

  788. they're driven

  789. out of the district

  790. the word of God

  791. was spreading

  792. throughout the whole region.

  793. This is a much broader place.

  794. The region is much bigger

  795. than the district.

  796. So the gospel's

  797. going forth

  798. far and wide.

  799. Paul and Barnabas

  800. have not been driven

  801. out of the district

  802. yet.

  803. Right?

  804. It's safe to say

  805. that they're

  806. still in this place

  807. and maybe that

  808. they're part

  809. of the spread

  810. of it

  811. to the whole region.

  812. But it would be

  813. wrong to assume

  814. that they were

  815. the only proponents

  816. of that spread.

  817. They have come

  818. to a new place,

  819. a place that has not

  820. heard the gospel

  821. of Jesus Christ yet.

  822. They preach the gospel

  823. of Jesus Christ.

  824. People are converted.

  825. Right?

  826. Gentiles in large numbers

  827. embrace the truth

  828. of Christ.

  829. And we see

  830. that the word of the Lord

  831. spreads

  832. throughout the whole region.

  833. Right?

  834. Far and wide.

  835. The gospel

  836. is being proclaimed.

  837. Right?

  838. Being a follower

  839. of Jesus Christ

  840. necessitates

  841. that we be gospel

  842. preachers.

  843. Jesus made a promise

  844. in Acts 1.8.

  845. He said

  846. to the apostles,

  847. but you will receive

  848. power when the Holy Spirit

  849. has come upon you

  850. and you will be

  851. my witnesses

  852. in Jerusalem

  853. and in all Judea

  854. and Samaria.

  855. And here's where

  856. we find ourselves

  857. in the story

  858. and to the end

  859. of the earth.

  860. The gospel proclamation

  861. has now gone

  862. outside of the borders

  863. of Samaria.

  864. It's gone beyond

  865. that place

  866. and they're filling

  867. in the gaps

  868. all along

  869. as newcomers

  870. to Jesus Christ

  871. or sharing

  872. the gospel

  873. of Jesus Christ

  874. with those

  875. that they know.

  876. But it has now

  877. gone beyond that

  878. in the work

  879. of Paul

  880. and Barnabas.

  881. Right?

  882. That promise

  883. was being fulfilled

  884. and it is still

  885. now being

  886. fulfilled.

  887. We are

  888. followers

  889. of Christ.

  890. We are Gentiles

  891. saved by grace.

  892. I don't know

  893. that there's anybody

  894. in here of Jewish descent.

  895. If you are,

  896. you're also saved

  897. by grace.

  898. I'm a Gentile.

  899. Right?

  900. Saved by grace.

  901. Praise God.

  902. And understanding

  903. rightly that salvation

  904. drives evangelistic effort.

  905. Fifth thing

  906. I want you to notice

  907. and in closing

  908. we'll go through

  909. this really quick.

  910. The unwavering

  911. commitment of Paul

  912. toward the Gentiles.

  913. The unwavering

  914. commitment of Paul

  915. toward the Gentiles.

  916. You have to remember

  917. as we consider

  918. Paul's ministry

  919. that he was

  920. of Jewish descent.

  921. He prized

  922. highly that.

  923. We see in the book

  924. of Galatians

  925. oh my gosh

  926. my brain

  927. Philippians

  928. he tears down

  929. counts things

  930. as rubbish

  931. that he once

  932. treasured.

  933. He had studied

  934. to be a Jew

  935. a zealous Jew

  936. a Jew among Jews

  937. right?

  938. And here he is

  939. going to his people

  940. and they are

  941. wholeheartedly

  942. almost rejecting

  943. the gospel

  944. of Jesus Christ.

  945. and he has

  946. set his attention

  947. now to a people

  948. that by his

  949. upbringing

  950. would have been

  951. inferior in

  952. every way.

  953. The Jews

  954. were very

  955. proud.

  956. This nationalism

  957. even as they

  958. had been scattered

  959. and recollected

  960. and scattered

  961. again

  962. a very

  963. very proud

  964. people

  965. a minority

  966. in most places

  967. trying to stand

  968. firm against

  969. the oppression

  970. of Rome

  971. and the

  972. dissolving

  973. of their

  974. culture.

  975. and this

  976. is who

  977. God

  978. calls

  979. Paul

  980. to reach

  981. a people

  982. that in

  983. his

  984. mind

  985. would

  986. have

  987. been

  988. and

  989. ceased

  990. to be

  991. inferior.

  992. He sees

  993. these as

  994. people

  995. desperately

  996. needing

  997. the gospel

  998. of Christ.

  999. Verse 46

  1000. we've

  1001. touched on it

  1002. a few times

  1003. it was necessary

  1004. that the word

  1005. of God

  1006. be spoken

  1007. first to

  1008. you

  1009. since you

  1010. thrust it

  1011. aside

  1012. and judge

  1013. yourselves

  1014. unworthy

  1015. of return

  1016. behold

  1017. we are

  1018. turning

  1019. to the

  1020. Gentiles

  1021. in the

  1022. verse 47

  1023. for so

  1024. the Lord

  1025. has commanded

  1026. us

  1027. saying

  1028. I have

  1029. made you

  1030. a light

  1031. for the

  1032. Gentiles

  1033. that you

  1034. may bring

  1035. salvation

  1036. to the

  1037. ends

  1038. of the

  1039. earth.

  1040. Now you

  1041. might scratch

  1042. your head

  1043. there and

  1044. say but

  1045. wait a

  1046. second

  1047. is there

  1048. a record

  1049. of God

  1050. saying

  1051. to Paul

  1052. I have

  1053. made you

  1054. a light

  1055. for the

  1056. Gentiles

  1057. that you

  1058. may bring

  1059. salvation

  1060. to the

  1061. earth.

  1062. No

  1063. not directly

  1064. not explicitly

  1065. to Paul

  1066. but what Paul

  1067. is doing

  1068. is citing

  1069. Isaiah

  1070. 49

  1071. 6

  1072. chapter 49

  1073. verse 6

  1074. which says

  1075. it is too

  1076. light a thing

  1077. that you

  1078. should be

  1079. my servant

  1080. to raise

  1081. up the

  1082. tribes of

  1083. Jacob

  1084. and to

  1085. bring back

  1086. the

  1087. preserved

  1088. of Israel

  1089. I will

  1090. make you

  1091. as a

  1092. light

  1093. for the

  1094. nations

  1095. that my

  1096. salvation

  1097. may reach

  1098. to the

  1099. end

  1100. of the

  1101. earth.

  1102. Paul is

  1103. interpreting

  1104. for us

  1105. Old Testament

  1106. promises

  1107. that God's

  1108. people would

  1109. take the

  1110. good news

  1111. of Jesus

  1112. Christ

  1113. now

  1114. understood

  1115. to the

  1116. ends

  1117. of the

  1118. earth.

  1119. In many

  1120. places in

  1121. scripture

  1122. God speaks

  1123. of his

  1124. global

  1125. intention

  1126. for his

  1127. glory

  1128. to be

  1129. made

  1130. known.

  1131. I'll

  1132. just give

  1133. you one

  1134. other

  1135. example

  1136. this

  1137. morning

  1138. for the

  1139. sake

  1140. of

  1141. time.

  1142. Psalm

  1143. 96

  1144. 3

  1145. the

  1146. psalmist

  1147. commands

  1148. declare

  1149. his

  1150. glory

  1151. among

  1152. the

  1153. nations

  1154. his

  1155. marvelous

  1156. works

  1157. among

  1158. all

  1159. the

  1160. peoples.

  1161. The

  1162. notion

  1163. that God

  1164. was not

  1165. for the

  1166. nations

  1167. was a

  1168. sentiment

  1169. unique

  1170. to the

  1171. Jews

  1172. of this

  1173. time.

  1174. They had

  1175. developed

  1176. as I

  1177. said

  1178. a

  1179. superiority

  1180. complex

  1181. as God's

  1182. people.

  1183. They looked

  1184. down their

  1185. noses

  1186. at everyone

  1187. else.

  1188. The Jews

  1189. of Paul's

  1190. day

  1191. this is the

  1192. severity

  1193. of it

  1194. the Jews

  1195. of Paul's

  1196. day

  1197. took great

  1198. pains

  1199. not to

  1200. carry

  1201. Gentile

  1202. dust

  1203. into the

  1204. borders

  1205. of Israel.

  1206. Catch this

  1207. little important

  1208. detail for

  1209. some of the

  1210. rest of

  1211. our text.

  1212. They took

  1213. great pains

  1214. as they

  1215. traveled

  1216. through

  1217. Gentile

  1218. lands

  1219. before

  1220. they

  1221. entered

  1222. Israel

  1223. to

  1224. clean

  1225. up

  1226. to

  1227. get

  1228. all

  1229. of

  1230. the

  1231. dust

  1232. off

  1233. because

  1234. it

  1235. was

  1236. seen

  1237. as

  1238. defiled

  1239. because

  1240. Gentiles

  1241. lived there.

  1242. This was

  1243. their

  1244. disdain

  1245. for the

  1246. Gentiles.

  1247. But the

  1248. widespread

  1249. rejection of

  1250. the gospel

  1251. of Jesus

  1252. Christ

  1253. for the

  1254. Jews

  1255. served

  1256. as a

  1257. catalyst

  1258. for that

  1259. gospel

  1260. to go

  1261. to the

  1262. nations.

  1263. And note

  1264. what Paul

  1265. and Barnabas

  1266. do in

  1267. response to

  1268. being driven

  1269. out of

  1270. Antioch and

  1271. Pisidia

  1272. by the

  1273. Jews.

  1274. Verse 51,

  1275. but they

  1276. shook off

  1277. the dust

  1278. from their

  1279. feet

  1280. against

  1281. them

  1282. and went

  1283. to

  1284. Iconium.

  1285. There's the

  1286. significance

  1287. of this,

  1288. right?

  1289. This was to

  1290. suggest

  1291. that the

  1292. Jews in

  1293. Antioch and

  1294. Pisidia

  1295. were no

  1296. better

  1297. than

  1298. pagans.

  1299. And Paul

  1300. and Barnabas

  1301. didn't want to

  1302. take their

  1303. unbelief

  1304. with them.

  1305. That's

  1306. symbolic,

  1307. shaking the

  1308. dust

  1309. off.

  1310. The only

  1311. thing that

  1312. matters in

  1313. the end,

  1314. beloved,

  1315. is whether

  1316. or not we

  1317. are in

  1318. Christ.

  1319. Our

  1320. ethnic

  1321. descent

  1322. matters

  1323. not at

  1324. all.

  1325. And the

  1326. question to

  1327. ask you

  1328. primarily,

  1329. I know there's

  1330. some exceptions,

  1331. I praise God

  1332. for the

  1333. exceptions in

  1334. this room,

  1335. but primarily

  1336. white,

  1337. middle class

  1338. Americans

  1339. in this

  1340. room.

  1341. Is there

  1342. any ethnicity

  1343. that we

  1344. consider outside

  1345. the grace

  1346. of God?

  1347. Is there

  1348. any people

  1349. that you

  1350. would think,

  1351. oh, but

  1352. not to

  1353. them?

  1354. I'd suggest

  1355. that's the

  1356. very people

  1357. you should

  1358. carry the

  1359. gospel message

  1360. to.

  1361. Have it

  1362. rend your

  1363. heart.

  1364. You would

  1365. see that

  1366. people are

  1367. all in

  1368. the same

  1369. position

  1370. apart from

  1371. Christ,

  1372. damned

  1373. eternally

  1374. in desperate

  1375. need of a

  1376. Savior.

  1377. And so we

  1378. can observe

  1379. the

  1380. persecution

  1381. that

  1382. accompanies

  1383. gospel

  1384. proclamation

  1385. in this

  1386. text,

  1387. the

  1388. responsibility

  1389. of

  1390. mankind

  1391. to

  1392. respond

  1393. to

  1394. the

  1395. gospel,

  1396. the

  1397. sovereignty

  1398. of

  1399. God

  1400. in the

  1401. salvation

  1402. of

  1403. his

  1404. people,

  1405. the

  1406. evangelistic

  1407. fervor

  1408. of God's

  1409. people,

  1410. the

  1411. unwavering

  1412. commitment

  1413. of Paul

  1414. toward

  1415. the

  1416. Gentiles,

  1417. all in

  1418. these

  1419. few

  1420. verses.

  1421. What a

  1422. text.

  1423. And note

  1424. finally the

  1425. result of

  1426. these

  1427. observations.

  1428. Verse 52,

  1429. and the

  1430. disciples were

  1431. filled with

  1432. joy and

  1433. with the

  1434. Holy Spirit.

  1435. Let's pray

  1436. together.

  1437. Let's

  1438. pray together.
