  1. Good morning, and I just want to express my joy and my happiness to be here with you guys.

  2. ! Advent season really does minister a lot to my heart every year.

  3. And as a special blessing to me getting a chance to come and share and preach God's Word to you this morning.

  4. You know, as we've already defined, I hope most of you can walk away from the Advent season knowing what Advent actually is.

  5. But just, if you're new in the scene, just know that Advent is just a Latin word for meaning either the coming or the arrival of an important person or an important event.

  6. And in our context, there's no greater person than Christ the Messiah, no greater event than Him coming to the earth to come and dwell, walk among us, and to be our Savior.

  7. So, as Nathan already pointed out, today's focus is focused on the Advent of peace.

  8. So, peace that is coming to us.

  9. But also, Advent also has another meaning.

  10. It's not just we look back at Christ's first arrival when He came and came among us, baby in the manger.

  11. But also, the coming or the arrival of Him coming back again to rescue us and to finally bring this dark world to an end and usher in the new heaven and the new earth coming to rescue us.

  12. So, that's kind of a double meaning there.

  13. We have a coming that we look back at and a coming that we are looking forward to in Advent.

  14. But just by way of introduction, today we're talking about peace.

  15. And in my own life, this has been a quest, a looking for what can I find peace in.

  16. So, just know that this is a very personal message for me as well.

  17. This ministered a lot to my heart.

  18. Well, let's just go to the Lord one more time.

  19. And I just want to just ask Him, Father, please, this morning, I pray that You would use me, a man with many flaws, many sins, imperfect.

  20. I pray that You would be delighted to work through this broken vessel to minister to Your people this morning.

  21. And God, I pray that Your Spirit would communicate the Word to our hearts, to our souls, to our minds, Lord.

  22. That people here would be moved to greater love for You.

  23. That they would know the peace of Christ that He has brought us.

  24. In Christ's name, amen.

  25. So, as you look around the world and you see the people in it, your friends, your co-workers, on the news, wherever it is,

  26. and just stop and just look even at your own life, you'll see that there is a search for peace.

  27. And no one can find it.

  28. It's peace, you know, how we define things sometimes by looking at the opposite.

  29. So, if we wanted to say the opposite of joy is sorrow or sadness, so the opposite of peace is anxiety.

  30. And the word, at least, is used a lot in the Scripture for the word anxiety.

  31. It means to be like inwardly torn apart, shredded apart by outward things that are happening or inward,

  32. that are causing you just to be devastated in your soul, to be torn and ripped to shreds by circumstances that are around you.

  33. It's a suffering of your soul and your heart that when you go through things in life and you can't cope with it,

  34. you can't deal with it, you're feeling crushed and you're feeling ripped apart.

  35. And I have been there even this week, and I know that you also have experienced that.

  36. So, the people around us, and even you, you may have, people search for peace in all sorts of different things.

  37. A big one, people search for peace in money and financial security.

  38. They think, if I have enough money, I can deal with any kind of problem that comes my way.

  39. But, as we know, that's not certain.

  40. Things can happen where you can lose pretty much everything you have.

  41. You never can have enough to feel safe and secure.

  42. And another thing people look to is relationships, whether good or bad relationships,

  43. thinking that this man or this woman or this friend can help me deal with anything going on in my life,

  44. and I'm going to look to them to give me the peace that I need.

  45. But, as we know, we're all broken, and we let each other down.

  46. I can't give anybody peace.

  47. We're not a reliable source of peace at all.

  48. People will fail because people are broken and people have sinned.

  49. And others look for peace, like just in vacations, escapes.

  50. I used to have a habit of doing this many years ago.

  51. So, just think, if I just go here, leave this physical location, and go somewhere I want,

  52. my son and my stuff won't follow me there.

  53. Not true at all.

  54. You are you wherever you go.

  55. And so, the stuff that you bring there continues to eat at you and gnaw at you,

  56. even while you're in a different location.

  57. And then you come back, and you're more stressed out than when you left

  58. because you've been looking for it in the wrong place.

  59. Other people look for it in health.

  60. They want to take care of their bodies.

  61. They want to look good.

  62. They either just want to say, if I think that people can look at me and say,

  63. I look good, we get approval from man, I'll have peace.

  64. Or just, I want to take care of myself because I'm scared of getting sick.

  65. I'm scared of dying.

  66. But, you know what?

  67. You can't maintain it forever.

  68. And things happen.

  69. You can do whatever you want to do.

  70. But, eventually, we all are wearing out.

  71. We all are fading.

  72. And I think a big one that a lot of people look to is this idea of,

  73. I can have peace if I can get in a routine, if I can plan well enough,

  74. where I know everything is coming at me, nothing is going to catch me off guard,

  75. and if something is just kind of thrown in the middle of that,

  76. and your routine or your schedule is thrown off, you're thrown off.

  77. And you don't even know how to cope with change.

  78. And knowing that, like, nothing, plans aren't certain, life catches us off guard.

  79. So true spiritual peace is just lost for many of us.

  80. We can't grasp it no matter what we do.

  81. It just eludes us.

  82. So, why can't we be at peace with ourselves?

  83. Why can't we be at peace with those around us?

  84. Why is it always something going on in here that's, like, tearing us apart, ripping us to shreds?

  85. And you may find that to be the case with you this morning.

  86. So, what's burdening your soul?

  87. What is it that you're anxious about that's tearing you apart?

  88. So, Christmas time, the holiday season, is a time for a lot of people to try to regain that peace.

  89. And it can be done in a good way, which is what we're trying to do,

  90. but also, for most people who are without Christ and in the world,

  91. they do it in a lot of false, superficial, shallow ways that never, ever actually bring peace.

  92. It's the whole, you know, it's the Christmas spirit.

  93. Cheer up.

  94. It'll all be okay.

  95. Be happy.

  96. You know, this is the time when we just, usually we're mean and cool to each other,

  97. but it's Christmas time, so let's be nice to each other and let's have peace together.

  98. And it's sort of, you know, epitomized a lot of the stuff you see on TV,

  99. in the movies you watch that are very, you know, warm, cuddly, cozy.

  100. But, you know what?

  101. Like, that stuff may be, you know, I'm not trying to hate on that,

  102. but at the same time, what I'm saying is, that's not reality.

  103. Like, we live in an awful, broken, sinful world.

  104. And to kind of look to the world and say,

  105. with this this shallow, warm, sentimental, you know, cheer up, it's Christmas, it's time to be happy,

  106. it's about absurd as like sending a Hallmark card to a starving village in Asia

  107. and saying, we hope you feel better because it's Christmas.

  108. You know, it doesn't fix anything.

  109. It's not real.

  110. We have to have something that's not man-made and superficial

  111. that can heal the broken world that we live in.

  112. And so, we can't look to just what the world looks to at Christmastime.

  113. More junk, more gifts, more party, more whatever.

  114. It's not going to bring the peace that we need.

  115. And so, but on the other hand, we can use this time,

  116. the holiday time, the Christmastime,

  117. to elevate our thoughts to a higher place

  118. for the real meaning of what Christmas is.

  119. But let's kind of create the problem.

  120. So, we're starting to create the problem,

  121. and then we're going to solve it, hopefully.

  122. God's going to solve it through His Word.

  123. But why do we have no peace?

  124. Why don't any of those things work, right?

  125. Why don't they work?

  126. Well, the simple answer is that

  127. we can't have any spiritual peace within ourselves or in the world

  128. because we have a spiritual problem,

  129. a spiritual condition.

  130. And the reality is that we have sinned

  131. and turned away against the God of peace.

  132. And because of that, you will never have peace in yourself.

  133. Because we are at odds with God Himself,

  134. we'll never, ever have peace.

  135. You can't have peace when God is your enemy,

  136. when you have set yourself up against Him.

  137. And the Scripture says

  138. that all of us have sinned against God.

  139. Every one of us.

  140. We have chosen to love,

  141. to give our lives to things that aren't worthy.

  142. We have kind of either directly or indirectly

  143. said to God,

  144. You're not worthy of us loving.

  145. You're not worthy of our obedience in our lives.

  146. And we're going to do what we want to do

  147. and try to find what only You can give us

  148. through all these things that You have created

  149. in the world.

  150. And that's what it is.

  151. All of us have fallen.

  152. Our souls were meant to know God,

  153. to worship Him,

  154. to have a relationship with the God of peace.

  155. Right?

  156. The peace of God.

  157. But sin has turned us against Him.

  158. In James 4, verses 4-5,

    James 4:4–5

  159. I'll just read this to you.

  160. James says,

  161. You adulterous people,

  162. do you not know that friendship

  163. with the world is enmity with God?

  164. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of this world

  165. makes himself an enemy of God.

  166. Or do you not suppose that it is no purpose?

  167. The Scripture says,

  168. He yearns jealously over the Spirit

  169. that He has made to dwell in us.

  170. So this is just a picture of spiritual unfaithfulness to God,

  171. having these strong affections

  172. for the things in the creation

  173. and not the Creator.

  174. Paul says,

  175. Because they, like being mankind,

  176. exchanged the truth about God for a lie.

  177. They exchanged it.

  178. And we worshiped and served the creature

  179. rather than the Creator

  180. who is blessed forever.

  181. And this word that he talks about,

  182. don't love the world here,

  183. like if you love the world,

  184. you make yourself an enemy of God,

  185. it means like a very strong

  186. or immodest attachment to something.

  187. And that's what we've done.

  188. We've taken things in this world

  189. and we've like loved them far more than they deserve.

  190. And we haven't given that love to the Creator.

  191. And so that's why,

  192. and God deserves it.

  193. He deserves it.

  194. He is the Creator.

  195. He made you.

  196. He even sustains you at this very moment.

  197. Every good thing you have

  198. is from Him and Him alone.

  199. your health,

  200. your money,

  201. your clothes,

  202. everything you have

  203. is a gift from God

  204. to help you see that He is good.

  205. But still,

  206. we credit that to ourselves.

  207. And we think that it's us sustaining us.

  208. And we ignore

  209. or either blatantly push Him away.

  210. And so,

  211. because sin has made us at war with God,

  212. we will never have peace.

  213. You cannot ever have

  214. any inward spiritual peace

  215. when God is set against you.

  216. Isaiah,

  217. 57, 20-21,

  218. you just might want to write this down,

  219. but listen to this.

  220. It says,

  221. The wicked

  222. are like the tossing of the sea,

  223. for it cannot be quiet,

  224. and its waters toss up mire and dirt.

  225. There is no peace,

  226. says my God,

  227. for the wicked.

  228. That's a picture of the world.

  229. It's being tossed and tossed

  230. and no quiet,

  231. no peace.

  232. And it says,

  233. there's no peace.

  234. God says,

  235. there's no peace for the wicked,

  236. no peace for those

  237. who are set against Him.

  238. You can't.

  239. So,

  240. that's creating the problem.

  241. We don't have peace

  242. because we are at war with God.

  243. And mankind

  244. who has set himself

  245. against God.

  246. But,

  247. what we can do

  248. at this Christmas time

  249. is,

  250. is use this

  251. as a chance

  252. just to elevate our souls

  253. to a higher place.

  254. If we use this

  255. to focus on the true meaning

  256. of Christmas

  257. and, I guess,

  258. rediscover it,

  259. refresh it,

  260. and allow it to play out

  261. into the rest of our life,

  262. not just Christmas,

  263. but this is an opportunity

  264. to hit reset.

  265. But,

  266. throughout the ages,

  267. we celebrate that God

  268. is a God of salvation,

  269. that He has worked

  270. through the ages

  271. to bring salvation

  272. to us.

  273. Thousands of years

  274. before it actually

  275. came to us.

  276. It was spoken

  277. by the prophet Isaiah

  278. 700 years or so

  279. before Christ came.

  280. He told of the Prince

  281. of Peace

  282. that would come,

  283. first bringing peace

  284. to individuals

  285. and then to the nations,

  286. that His government

  287. would be established

  288. forever.

  289. It says,

  290. Isaiah 9,

  291. 6-7,

  292. For to us a child

  293. is born,

  294. to us a son

  295. is given,

  296. and the government

  297. shall be on His shoulders,

  298. and His name

  299. shall be called

  300. Wonderful Counselor,

  301. Mighty God,

  302. Everlasting Father,

  303. Prince of Peace.

  304. And that's what we celebrate,

  305. is the first coming

  306. of the Prince of Peace,

  307. and how He would bring

  308. peace to our souls

  309. and then to the nations.

  310. So,

  311. what is it?

  312. I mean,

  313. just stop and pause.

  314. What is it that's making

  315. you anxious today?

  316. It could be several things.

  317. Guys,

  318. don't lie.

  319. You're anxious

  320. about stuff too.

  321. Being stoic

  322. and acting like you're tough

  323. doesn't change it.

  324. You still are being

  325. torn apart in here

  326. whether you show it or not.

  327. And there are some things

  328. you can have no control over.

  329. So,

  330. I beg you this morning

  331. just to really let God's Word

  332. just minister to your soul

  333. that we would find that peace.

  334. So,

  335. let's just start with

  336. a good definition

  337. of peace.

  338. I guess when we're talking

  339. about it just biblically,

  340. it does mean like

  341. just the word

  342. an inner calm

  343. or an inner tranquility

  344. of the soul,

  345. a quietness of the soul.

  346. and

  347. I'll give you

  348. just a definition

  349. of what that looks like.

  350. But here's

  351. our definition.

  352. Peace is the inner confidence

  353. and trust

  354. in God's wise,

  355. sovereign control

  356. of our lives

  357. resulting from being

  358. restored to Him

  359. through Jesus Christ.

  360. Peace is the inner confidence

  361. and trust

  362. in God's wise,

  363. sovereign control

  364. of our lives

  365. resulting from being

  366. restored to Him

  367. through Jesus Christ.

  368. So,

  369. we can have peace

  370. through Jesus Christ.

  371. And that's kind of

  372. where we're going today.

  373. The Old Testament word

  374. for that is just

  375. shalom,

  376. meaning

  377. a complete peace,

  378. an inner contentment,

  379. completeness,

  380. wholeness,

  381. harmony.

  382. So,

  383. three things

  384. we're going to look at today.

  385. Now I invite you

  386. just to open your Bibles

  387. to a well-known passage,

  388. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  389. Very familiar

  390. just in the,

  391. what we would refer to

  392. in some ways

  393. as the Christmas story.

  394. Luke 2.

  395. Let's go to verse 8.

  396. So,

  397. the three things

  398. that we're going to look at.

  399. Number one,

  400. because God brought

  401. peace to us.

  402. These are reasons

  403. we can have peace.

  404. Excuse me.

  405. Like,

  406. why can we have peace?

  407. Okay.

  408. Because God brought

  409. peace to us.

  410. That's number one.

  411. Because God brought

  412. peace to us.

  413. Look at Luke 2,

    Luke 2:8

  414. verse 8.

  415. And in the same region

  416. there were shepherds

  417. out in the field

  418. keeping watch

  419. over their flocks

  420. by night.

  421. And an angel

  422. of the Lord

  423. appeared to them

  424. and the glory

  425. of the Lord

  426. shone around them.

  427. And they were filled

  428. with great fear.

  429. And the angel

  430. said to them,

  431. Fear not,

  432. for behold,

  433. I bring you

  434. good news,

  435. gospel,

  436. right,

  437. of great joy

  438. that will be

  439. for all people.

  440. For unto you

  441. is born this day

  442. in the city of David

  443. a Savior

  444. who is Christ the Lord.

  445. And this will be

  446. a sign for you.

  447. You will find a baby

  448. wrapped in swallowing clothes

  449. and lying in a manger.

  450. And suddenly

  451. there was with the angel

  452. a multitude

  453. of the heavenly hosts

  454. praising God

  455. and saying,

  456. Glory to God

  457. and the highest

  458. and on earth

  459. peace among those

  460. with whom

  461. He is pleased.

  462. So there are some,

  463. you know,

  464. this is kind of

  465. one of those

  466. cliche phrases

  467. that you hear

  468. at Christmas

  469. and most people

  470. don't even know

  471. where it comes from

  472. or what it means

  473. but it's like,

  474. hey man,

  475. it's peace on earth,

  476. good will toward men.

  477. And it's,

  478. that's true

  479. but look what the verse says,

  480. among those

  481. with whom He is pleased.

  482. So this idea

  483. that like,

  484. it's not just this,

  485. this weird,

  486. you know,

  487. peace floating out there

  488. that we lay hold of,

  489. it's come to us

  490. only by God.

  491. And it is going to be

  492. on those

  493. with whom He is pleased.

  494. Those who will come

  495. to know the Messiah.

  496. So this is like

  497. the dawning of peace.

  498. Okay?

  499. So if I said a minute ago,

  500. God was our,

  501. if you're without Christ,

  502. like God is our,

  503. He is your enemy.

  504. But He has brought

  505. peace to us.

  506. And so,

  507. you should know

  508. like a really,

  509. you know,

  510. the well-known

  511. Christmas tradition

  512. of kissing

  513. under the mistletoe

  514. comes from the old,

  515. you know,

  516. ancient Celtic,

  517. Scottish,

  518. Irish tradition

  519. of when

  520. they would come together

  521. under the mistletoe

  522. to make peace.

  523. Like enemies

  524. would come over

  525. and be together

  526. and make peace

  527. under the mistletoe.

  528. And they would lay down

  529. their weapons

  530. and they would come

  531. to talk about peace.

  532. So that's why

  533. it's kind of a symbol of that.

  534. But God

  535. has brought peace to us

  536. by meeting under

  537. a different tree

  538. and saying,

  539. come and meet with me

  540. here to have peace

  541. with me.

  542. It says

  543. in Colossians

    Colossians 1:20

  544. chapter 1,

  545. verse 20,

  546. through Him,

  547. Christ,

  548. He reconciled

  549. all things to Himself,

  550. whether on earth

  551. or in heaven,

  552. making peace

  553. by the blood

  554. of His cross.

  555. Alright?

  556. So His offer is,

  557. though you have

  558. rejected Me,

  559. though you have

  560. rebelled against Me,

  561. though you have

  562. loved things

  563. that are not

  564. even worthy

  565. to be compared to Me,

  566. I am offering you,

  567. I am offering a chance

  568. with this arriving Messiah,

  569. this King,

  570. to have peace.

  571. So glory to God

  572. on the highest

  573. and on earth,

  574. peace among those

  575. who He has pleased.

  576. Christ.

  577. So,

  578. it's not just

  579. this random thing,

  580. it is an offer,

  581. like,

  582. you want peace with Me?

  583. You come

  584. through My Son.

  585. He is the Messiah,

  586. I am sending

  587. to save you

  588. from your sin

  589. and restore

  590. peace

  591. between us.

  592. So,

  593. there's like this offer

  594. in Psalm 2,

  595. is a messianic prophecy

  596. about the Messiah.

  597. It's about the coming

  598. of Christ

  599. and it's this idea

  600. that Christ

  601. is coming to the earth

  602. and this is what it says

  603. in verse 12.

  604. It's saying to the kings

  605. of the earth,

  606. it says,

  607. kiss the Son,

  608. lest He be angry

  609. and you perish

  610. in the way,

  611. for His wrath

  612. is quickly kindled,

  613. but blessed are those

  614. who take refuge in Him.

  615. So,

  616. this is the offer.

  617. God has brought peace

  618. to us,

  619. we celebrate that

  620. at Christmas

  621. that He came

  622. and condescended

  623. to be with us.

  624. So,

  625. that is good news.

  626. That's good news

  627. because God

  628. has brought peace

  629. to us.

  630. And secondly,

  631. the Bible talks about

  632. peace with God.

  633. Okay,

  634. so,

  635. we can have peace,

  636. number two,

  637. because we can have

  638. peace with God.

  639. Because we can have

  640. peace with God.

  641. Look at Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  642. There's just a couple

  643. more places

  644. for you to look,

  645. so,

  646. it's more topical today.

  647. Romans 5,

  648. go to verse,

  649. let's see,

  650. go to verse 1.

  651. So,

  652. why can we have

  653. peace?

  654. Because we can have

  655. peace with God.

  656. Look at Romans 5,

    Romans 5:1

  657. verse 1,

  658. it says,

  659. therefore,

  660. since we have been

  661. justified by faith,

  662. we have peace

  663. with God

  664. through

  665. our Lord Jesus.

  666. go down to verse 6.

  667. I've let you do

  668. the whole section,

  669. but we don't have time.

  670. Look at verse 6.

  671. It says,

  672. for while we were

  673. still weak,

  674. at the right time,

  675. Christ died

  676. for the ungodly.

  677. For one will scarcely

  678. die for a righteous

  679. person,

  680. though perhaps

  681. for a good person

  682. one might dare

  683. even to die.

  684. But God shows

  685. His love for us

  686. in that while we were

  687. still sinners,

  688. Christ died

  689. for us.

  690. since therefore

  691. we have now

  692. been justified

  693. by His blood,

  694. much more

  695. shall we be saved

  696. by Him

  697. from the wrath

  698. of God.

  699. For if while

  700. we were enemies,

  701. we were reconciled

  702. to God

  703. by the death

  704. of His Son,

  705. much more

  706. now that we are

  707. reconciled

  708. shall we be saved

  709. by His life.

  710. More than that,

  711. we also rejoice

  712. in God

  713. through our Lord

  714. Jesus Christ

  715. through whom

  716. we have now

  717. received reconciliation.

  718. Ah, man.

  719. This is so good.

  720. Don't let this passage

  721. be familiar to you.

  722. So the Bible

  723. uses words

  724. in this passage

  725. that describe us

  726. before we were

  727. in Christ.

  728. Okay?

  729. So God does not

  730. help those

  731. who help themselves.

  732. This says

  733. you were weak

  734. and you were helpless.

  735. You couldn't do

  736. anything

  737. to improve

  738. your condition.

  739. It used these

  740. words.

  741. Weak,

  742. helpless,

  743. ungodly,

  744. sinners,

  745. enemies.

  746. Those are

  747. descriptions of us

  748. before we are

  749. in Christ.

  750. And you see

  751. how Christ

  752. came

  753. and brought a

  754. remedy

  755. to each one

  756. of those things.

  757. Each one of them.

  758. so it's a chance

  759. to celebrate

  760. that God

  761. has sent

  762. His Son

  763. in order

  764. that we might

  765. not have

  766. strife with Him

  767. but have

  768. peace with Him.

  769. So our souls

  770. can have peace

  771. if you look

  772. in this passage

  773. knowing that

  774. His sacrifice

  775. and His shedding

  776. of His blood

  777. on the cross

  778. would save us

  779. from the wrath

  780. of God.

  781. That should bring

  782. peace to your soul

  783. knowing that the

  784. Savior

  785. has come

  786. to take away

  787. the wrath of God

  788. on your behalf

  789. so we can have

  790. peace

  791. because of faith

  792. and trust

  793. and confidence

  794. in His blood

  795. we can be

  796. justified,

  797. made right

  798. with God.

  799. Because right now

  800. in God's eyes

  801. like in a legal sense

  802. we are guilty,

  803. we are unrighteous

  804. but because of

  805. Christ now

  806. He can look at us

  807. and see the perfect

  808. life of His Son

  809. on us

  810. and He can say

  811. righteous,

  812. justified.

  813. We can be made

  814. right with God

  815. in that sense

  816. because of what

  817. Christ has done.

  818. We can have

  819. that inner serenity

  820. of the soul

  821. that comes from

  822. being justified

  823. in God's sight

  824. and that

  825. because we were

  826. separated,

  827. we were enemies

  828. of God,

  829. now we can have

  830. fellowship with God

  831. instead of like

  832. being at odds

  833. with Him

  834. we can be

  835. sons and daughters

  836. we can have

  837. a restored

  838. relationship

  839. with Him

  840. reconciled

  841. completely

  842. by the blood

  843. of His Son

  844. and we can have

  845. that.

  846. So real spiritual

  847. peace comes

  848. with the reality

  849. of knowing

  850. that we've experienced

  851. a divine pardon

  852. from God

  853. that He has

  854. paid for our sins

  855. in Christ

  856. and that because of that

  857. we can now be

  858. reconciled,

  859. restored back

  860. to God.

  861. We can know

  862. again the God

  863. of peace.

  864. Alright?

  865. That quietness

  866. of the soul.

  867. So the first question

  868. is if you're looking

  869. for peace today

  870. and you don't have

  871. the Messiah

  872. in your life,

  873. you don't have Christ,

  874. know that it's just

  875. going to be a vain

  876. pursuit until you

  877. reach this point

  878. to where you come

  879. to Christ

  880. to be your

  881. Savior,

  882. your Savior

  883. and your Messiah.

  884. Alright?

  885. So that's

  886. the third thing.

  887. It has to start there.

  888. But the Bible

  889. talks about peace

  890. with God

  891. but the Bible

  892. also talks about

  893. the peace

  894. of God.

  895. So this is

  896. the third thing.

  897. Because we can

  898. have the peace

  899. of God.

  900. Number three,

  901. because we can

  902. have the peace

  903. of God.

  904. So go to this

  905. very familiar passage,

  906. Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  907. This is going to

  908. start working out

  909. a little bit,

  910. at least practically,

  911. how this comes about.

  912. Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  913. Go to verse 4.

  914. So I just kind of

  915. want to,

  916. as a side note,

  917. I kind of want

  918. to say this.

  919. I think it would

  920. be helpful,

  921. maybe,

  922. to have a right

  923. understanding of

  924. God here.

  925. Because when God

  926. gives us something,

  927. He doesn't just

  928. dispense it to us.

  929. Meaning that He

  930. has a lot of peace

  931. and then He just

  932. says,

  933. here's some peace.

  934. He kind of

  935. gives it to us.

  936. Or here's some love

  937. and He's going to

  938. dish it out,

  939. you know,

  940. dispense it.

  941. It's not that.

  942. It's God gives us

  943. Himself.

  944. He gives us

  945. not just things,

  946. but He gives us

  947. Himself.

  948. And when He gives us

  949. Himself,

  950. like in Him

  951. is all the grace

  952. we need,

  953. all the peace

  954. we need.

  955. It's His presence.

  956. He doesn't give us

  957. something outside

  958. of Him.

  959. So,

  960. just know that.

  961. It's not like He's

  962. up there just

  963. dishing out pie

  964. from the sky.

  965. So,

  966. He gives us Himself

  967. in the Gospel.

  968. So,

  969. look at Philippians 4

  970. and we're talking

  971. about because we

  972. can have the peace

  973. of God.

  974. Verse 4,

  975. Paul says,

  976. rejoice in the Lord

  977. always.

  978. Again,

  979. I will say rejoice.

  980. Let your reasonableness

  981. be known to everyone.

  982. The Lord is at hand.

  983. Do not be anxious

  984. about anything,

  985. but in everything

  986. by prayer

  987. and supplication

  988. with thanksgiving.

  989. Let your requests

  990. be made known to God

  991. and the peace of God

  992. which surpasses

  993. all understanding

  994. will guard your hearts

  995. and minds

  996. in Christ Jesus.

  997. So,

  998. if you look at that,

  999. we see this idea

1000. of the peace of God,

  1001. this inner calm

  1002. quietness

  1003. of the soul

  1004. that Christ has promised

  1005. to believers.

  1006. Right?

  1007. If you'd all

  1008. looked on your bulletin,

  1009. there's a quote

  1010. by a Puritan.

  1011. One of my,

1012. one of the ones I think

1013. is one of my favorite

  1014. to read,

  1015. Thomas Watson.

  1016. They have a way

  1017. of saying things

  1018. that are so profound

1019. in a very simple way,

1020. in a very like deep way.

  1021. Thomas Watson said,

  1022. God sweetens outward pain

  1023. with inward peace.

  1024. It's true.

  1025. Very true.

  1026. And let's talk about

1027. this peace of God now.

  1028. That inner confidence,

  1029. right?

  1030. This inner tranquility

  1031. we can have.

1032. If you look at this,

  1033. we can talk about

  1034. the peace of God

  1035. and that comes again

  1036. through Christ.

  1037. Christ promised

  1038. that His presence

  1039. with us

  1040. would bring peace.

  1041. Many times

  1042. throughout the life

  1043. of Christ,

  1044. He would look

  1045. to His followers

  1046. and He would say

  1047. stuff like this,

  1048. like in John 14,

    John 14:25

  1049. verse 25.

  1050. He's like,

  1051. these things I've said

  1052. to you

  1053. while I've still

  1054. been with you,

  1055. but the Helper,

  1056. the Holy Spirit,

  1057. whom the Father

1058. will send in My name,

  1059. He will teach you

  1060. all these things

  1061. and bring to remembrance

1062. all that I have said

  1063. to you.

1064. And this is what He says.

  1065. He's like,

  1066. peace I leave you.

1067. My peace I give to you.

1068. Not as the world gives

  1069. do I give.

  1070. Let not your hearts

  1071. be troubled,

  1072. neither let them

  1073. be afraid.

  1074. He's like,

1075. I'm going to give you

  1076. this peace that is

  1077. unlike anything

  1078. this world has

  1079. to offer you.

  1080. And I'm giving it

  1081. to you.

  1082. So,

  1083. I just,

1084. this is one of my

  1085. favorites.

  1086. This is kind of

  1087. looking into this

  1088. passage in terms

  1089. of like,

  1090. what is the peace

  1091. of God?

  1092. What is it?

  1093. Jonathan Edwards,

  1094. another early

  1095. American Puritan.

  1096. I used to have

  1097. a shirt that said

  1098. Jonathan Edwards

  1099. is my homeboy

  1100. that someone

  1101. bought for me.

  1102. Jesus can't be

  1103. the homeboy,

  1104. but Jonathan Edwards

  1105. is like,

  1106. that's okay.

  1107. So,

1108. this is what he said

  1109. about the peace

  1110. of Christ.

  1111. Listen to this.

  1112. Christ's peace

  1113. is a virtuous

  1114. peace,

  1115. and a holy

  1116. peace.

  1117. The peace

  1118. that the saints

  1119. enjoy in Christ

  1120. is not only

  1121. their comfort,

  1122. but it also

  1123. is a part of

  1124. their beauty

  1125. and their dignity.

  1126. They are virtues

  1127. of graces

  1128. that God has

  1129. given to us

  1130. by his spirit.

  1131. Christ's peace

  1132. is an unfailing

  1133. and eternal

  1134. peace.

  1135. It is everlasting,

  1136. everlasting,

  1137. is what no time

  1138. or change

  1139. can destroy.

  1140. The fountain

  1141. of his comfort

  1142. shall never

  1143. be diminished.

  1144. His comfort

  1145. and joy

  1146. is a living

  1147. spring to the soul.

  1148. And that's

  1149. what we're talking

  1150. about.

  1151. The peace

  1152. of God

  1153. that surpasses

  1154. all understanding.

  1155. So,

  1156. let's look at

  1157. this passage.

  1158. He's saying,

  1159. don't be anxious.

  1160. Why?

  1161. How do we deal

  1162. with it?

  1163. When you face

  1164. anxiety,

  1165. what do you do?

  1166. A lot of people

1167. try to block it out

  1168. and they try to

  1169. focus on this idea

1170. that if I can just

  1171. expel these negative

  1172. thoughts and just

  1173. think positively

  1174. about things,

  1175. it'll just be okay.

  1176. But the problem

  1177. there is,

  1178. like,

  1179. you're not facing

  1180. the reality.

  1181. Like,

  1182. there is hard

  1183. stuff going on

  1184. around you.

  1185. You can't ignore it.

  1186. You can't just say,

  1187. I'm just not going

1188. to think about it now.

  1189. I'm going to put

  1190. my mind here

  1191. on these other things.

  1192. because those

  1193. overcoming facts

  1194. are going to be

  1195. there when you

  1196. come out of that.

  1197. And Paul is saying,

  1198. like,

  1199. I've learned,

  1200. I've learned this,

  1201. that when this

  1202. stuff happens,

1203. I can look at it

  1204. and I can smile

  1205. because of what

  1206. he's going to teach

  1207. us here.

  1208. Here's some things

  1209. in this passage.

  1210. If you look,

  1211. it says,

  1212. rejoice in the Lord

  1213. always.

  1214. I will say again,

  1215. rejoice.

  1216. Let your reasonableness

  1217. be known to everyone.

  1218. All right,

  1219. so anxiety

  1220. causes you

  1221. to be unreasonable.

  1222. You ever notice that?

  1223. Like,

  1224. you can't even,

  1225. like,

  1226. think straight.

  1227. Your logic's gone.

  1228. And he's saying,

  1229. it shouldn't be

  1230. this way with you.

  1231. Let your reasonableness

  1232. be known to everyone

  1233. around you.

  1234. Why?

1235. The Lord is at hand,

  1236. meaning that

  1237. he is near you.

  1238. His presence

  1239. is with you

  1240. and in you.

  1241. He's not far away.

  1242. Allow his presence

1243. to come and bring you

  1244. this peace.

  1245. And he says,

  1246. don't be anxious

  1247. about anything,

  1248. but in everything,

  1249. by prayer

  1250. and supplication

  1251. with thanksgiving,

  1252. let your request

  1253. be made known

  1254. to God.

  1255. So,

  1256. going to God,

  1257. pouring out

  1258. your anxieties

  1259. and your burdens,

  1260. casting those on him

  1261. because he cares

  1262. for you.

  1263. And then,

  1264. this is a very

  1265. practical thing,

  1266. guys.

  1267. you have to put

  1268. your mind

  1269. on the truth.

  1270. You have to put

  1271. your mind on,

1272. if we say we believe

  1273. these things

  1274. theologically,

  1275. you need to know

  1276. they actually affect

  1277. how you live,

1278. if it's what you believe.

  1279. Like this idea

  1280. of the sovereignty

  1281. of God

  1282. and the goodness

  1283. of God,

  1284. like those aren't

  1285. just cool,

  1286. nerdy theological

  1287. topics.

  1288. They're supposed

  1289. to like penetrate

  1290. how you think

  1291. and how you live.

  1292. Years ago,

  1293. when I was going

  1294. through all my

  1295. physical stuff

  1296. with the transplant

  1297. and I wasn't

  1298. doing good,

  1299. I think,

  1300. I don't remember

  1301. this time,

  1302. I think I was

  1303. on life support,

  1304. wasn't doing good

  1305. in my recovery.

  1306. I had a very

  1307. dear friend of mine

  1308. who's a good

  1309. brother in the Lord,

  1310. but at the time,

  1311. I think,

  1312. at the time,

  1313. I think the sovereignty

  1314. of God was just

  1315. kind of a nerdy

  1316. topic for him.

  1317. So,

  1318. when this was

  1319. going on with me,

  1320. he was in panic.

  1321. He was like

  1322. freaking out,

  1323. like Clay's

  1324. going to die,

  1325. Clay's going to die,

  1326. you know.

  1327. But,

  1328. men like Nathan

  1329. and Wes,

  1330. who also were

  1331. grieved by what

  1332. was going on

  1333. with me,

  1334. they had a

  1335. greater confidence

  1336. that God was

  1337. in control.

  1338. Like they

  1339. allowed that truth

  1340. to work itself

  1341. into the reality

  1342. of what was

  1343. going on.

  1344. And so,

  1345. you have to put

1346. your mind on the truth.

  1347. If you look,

  1348. you know,

  1349. look later in

  1350. Philippians,

  1351. he says,

  1352. whatever is good,

  1353. whatever is true,

  1354. whatever is praiseworthy,

  1355. they put your mind

  1356. on these things,

  1357. right?

1358. And the God of peace

  1359. will be with you.

  1360. Right?

  1361. So,

  1362. we have to

  1363. stop looking at lies

  1364. and stop looking

  1365. at circumstances

1366. and look to the truth

  1367. and allow God

  1368. to use that

  1369. to minister

  1370. to our hearts

  1371. to believe.

  1372. Right?

  1373. So,

  1374. what we believe

  1375. has practical implications

  1376. for how we live.

  1377. Even the greatest

  1378. doctrines in the Bible

  1379. affect how you live.

  1380. right?

  1381. So,

1382. that's how we get it.

  1383. We,

  1384. if you look,

1385. go on at this passage,

  1386. it says,

  1387. the peace of God

  1388. which surpasses

  1389. all understanding

  1390. will guard

  1391. your hearts

  1392. and your minds

  1393. in Christ Jesus.

  1394. So,

  1395. you don't just get

  1396. peace by

  1397. ignoring circumstances.

  1398. You get peace

  1399. by knowing

  1400. and having this

  1401. awesome feeling

  1402. of being protected.

  1403. right?

  1404. If,

  1405. if there's something

1406. going on in your life

  1407. and you know

1408. that like the sovereign God

  1409. of the universe

  1410. is with you

  1411. and for you

  1412. and you feel protected

  1413. even if there's

  1414. crazy things

  1415. going on around you.

1416. That's just how it is.

  1417. That's how peace works.

  1418. Peace,

  1419. peace flourishes

  1420. !

  1421. Peace flourishes

  1422. in the midst of

  1423. suffering and chaos.

1424. It's not in the absence

  1425. of suffering

  1426. and chaos.

  1427. It,

  1428. it comes up.

  1429. So,

  1430. this word

  1431. says right here,

  1432. it says,

  1433. guard your hearts

  1434. and minds.

  1435. It's a great,

  1436. military term

  1437. used in this context

  1438. for the Roman army

  1439. and other things,

  1440. but it means

1441. to set a watch over,

  1442. to garrison over,

  1443. to guard.

  1444. And he's saying

  1445. the peace of God

  1446. will guard

  1447. your heart

  1448. and your mind

  1449. from anxiety,

  1450. from fear,

  1451. from worry.

  1452. It's setting a watch

  1453. over your mind

  1454. and your heart.

  1455. That's what the peace

  1456. of God does.

  1457. Isaiah chapter 26,

    Isaiah 26:3

  1458. verse 3.

1459. This is what he says

  1460. about God.

  1461. He says,

  1462. you keep him

  1463. in perfect peace

  1464. whose mind

  1465. is stayed on you

1466. because he trusts in you.

  1467. Trust in the Lord

  1468. forever,

  1469. for the God

  1470. is an everlasting rock.

  1471. So,

  1472. trials and suffering

  1473. and loss,

  1474. they're the breeding ground

  1475. of peace.

  1476. That's where peace happens.

  1477. That inner peace

  1478. happens knowing

1479. that Christ is with you

1480. and that he is in you.

  1481. Right?

1482. And he's going to guard

  1483. your heart

  1484. and your mind.

  1485. So,

  1486. the truth is,

  1487. though we,

  1488. our souls can be

  1489. healthy as ever

  1490. in the midst of

  1491. crazy circumstances.

  1492. Almost simultaneously,

  1493. right?

1494. A friend of mine said,

  1495. if you're going

  1496. through a storm

  1497. in life,

  1498. if God doesn't

  1499. calm the storm,

  1500. he'll calm you

  1501. in the middle

  1502. of the storm.

  1503. You know?

  1504. And that's very true.

  1505. Not just nice

  1506. and poetic,

  1507. but true.

  1508. Like,

  1509. I've been there.

  1510. You know,

  1511. so many opportunities.

  1512. I don't want to just

  1513. kind of give you

  1514. an extreme example,

  1515. but,

  1516. I mean,

  1517. I can have

  1518. the peace of God

  1519. riding down the road

  1520. feeling stressed out

  1521. by life.

  1522. Just normal circumstances.

  1523. But,

1524. but just so you know,

  1525. when fear

  1526. and death

  1527. and things like that

  1528. are knocking,

1529. it can also be there.

  1530. Third night

  1531. into my transplant,

  1532. I remember going

  1533. to a different unit

  1534. that's on my mind

  1535. because we're in

  1536. touch with somebody

  1537. right now,

  1538. going through this

  1539. at a hospital,

  1540. a lung transplant

  1541. patient.

  1542. But I was there

1543. and in a dark room

  1544. kind of glassed

  1545. around me

  1546. and I wasn't allowed

  1547. to have any visitors,

  1548. no one I knew

  1549. at the time.

  1550. And all the medicine

1551. was kind of hitting me

  1552. and I was just

  1553. a little delirious

  1554. and very,

  1555. very anxious

  1556. about what was

  1557. going on around me

  1558. and just kind of

  1559. like moved around,

  1560. tossed around a lot

1561. for those couple of days.

  1562. And in this room

  1563. just like around

1564. maybe two in the morning,

  1565. I just kind of

  1566. was just watching

  1567. the clock,

  1568. couldn't go to sleep,

  1569. just had like

  1570. 18 different

  1571. like attachments

  1572. on my body

  1573. and I just remember

  1574. quoting this scripture

  1575. to myself

1576. and the peace of God

  1577. is real

1578. not because I experienced it

  1579. but I experienced it

  1580. because it was real.

  1581. Alright?

1582. And He met me there

1583. and He guarded my heart

  1584. and my mind

1585. in the midst of that.

1586. And He gave me peace

  1587. in the midst of

  1588. when nothing good

1589. was going on around me

  1590. at all, you know.

  1591. You can have that.

  1592. Christ being with us.

  1593. He's come to us

  1594. and He's coming again.

  1595. And 2 Timothy 3

  1596. Paul says,

  1597. Now may the Lord

  1598. of peace Himself

  1599. continually grant you

  1600. peace in every circumstance.

1601. The Lord be with you.

  1602. So when His Spirit

  1603. is within us

  1604. like He promised,

  1605. the Helper,

  1606. the Holy Spirit

  1607. will come.

1608. He will work in you

1609. and He will remind you

  1610. of the truth

  1611. in those circumstances.

  1612. And He'll apply that

  1613. to your heart,

  1614. to your mind,

  1615. to your soul.

  1616. So look,

1617. it's not going to be easy.

  1618. This life's going to

  1619. get harder and harder.

  1620. Harder and harder.

  1621. John 15,

  1622. verse 33.

1623. I just want you to hear

  1624. the promise of God.

1625. This is something Jesus said.

1626. I just think it sums up

  1627. so much.

  1628. but I'm begging you

1629. to lay hold of Christ.

  1630. He'll give you this

1631. in the midst of everything

  1632. going on around you.

  1633. I've just seen

  1634. a very dear brother

1635. and a very dear sister

1636. walk through a hard time.

  1637. This is ministered

  1638. to their heart.

  1639. John 15,

  1640. verse 33.

  1641. He says,

1642. this is what Jesus says,

  1643. I've said these things

  1644. to you

  1645. that in me

  1646. you may have peace.

  1647. In the world

  1648. you will have

  1649. tribulation.

  1650. But take heart,

  1651. I have overcome

  1652. the world.

1653. So go to the Savior

  1654. and experience

  1655. the peace of God

  1656. that surpasses

  1657. all understanding.

  1658. And use this

  1659. Christmas season

  1660. as a chance

  1661. to refresh your mind

  1662. and refresh your heart.

  1663. Ask Him

  1664. to kick out

  1665. all these stupid things

  1666. that you're trying

  1667. to find peace in

  1668. that are not

1669. going to let you down.

  1670. And ask that Christ

  1671. replace those things.

  1672. So,

  1673. let's pray together.
