  1. We are back in the book of Acts after a six week break for the Advent season and New Year's.

  2. We're back at our verse by verse exposition. I'm excited for that. I hope that you are as well.

  3. Get to Acts chapter 14. Take something, your finger, your ribbon marker.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  4. Maybe there's a way to save it on your device if that's the way you're doing it.

  5. Mark Acts chapter 14. There's a bit of a typo on your bulletin, which was not Andy's fault.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  6. It's my fault because I decided late yesterday afternoon that we're going to look at Acts chapter 14 all together.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  7. Not all today, but we're going to look at it in its entirety across the coming weeks.

  8. And so it's going to be the text for today is Acts chapter 14 and we're going to address some points and move on.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  9. But before we do that, I want us to look at Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  10. Mark Acts chapter 14. I want you to go back to Acts chapter 1 with me.

Acts 14 chapter mention Acts 1 chapter mention

  11. There's some other places I want you to turn as well.

  12. Because it's important for us to remember, right, it's been some time since the first start of our study in Acts, right?

  13. When we started in Acts chapter 1, it's been some time.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  14. So time has passed.

  15. And I want to remind you that the book of Acts is Luke's second volume.

  16. First, he wrote the Gospel of Luke, which is his account of Jesus' earthly ministry.

  17. The book of Acts is Luke's account of Jesus' heavenly ministry.

  18. So the Gospel of Luke, Luke's earthly ministry.

  19. The book of Acts, Luke's account of Jesus' heavenly ministry.

  20. It's most commonly known as the Acts of the Apostles.

  21. I think it would more aptly be called the Acts of the Risen Jesus Christ.

  22. Jesus acts as our risen Savior by the agency of the Holy Spirit in the lives of his followers.

  23. And that's what Luke is recording for us here.

  24. In the book of Acts, we see the repetition of the phrases full of the Holy Spirit

  25. and filled with the Holy Spirit throughout Luke's record.

  26. Let me give you some examples if you're taking notes.

  27. It's chapter 2, verse 4.

  28. Chapter 4, verse 8, and verse 31.

  29. Chapter 5, verse 3.

  30. Chapter 6, verse 3, and verse 5.

  31. Chapter 7, verse 55.

  32. Chapter 9, verse 17.

  33. Chapter 11, verse 24.

  34. Chapter 13, verse 9 is bringing us up to where we are.

  35. And there are some more places beyond our text today.

  36. But then at the very end of chapter 13, in verse 52, Luke writes this.

  37. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  38. I suggest to you this morning that we carry that knowledge,

  39. that Luke intends for us to carry that as he's pinning this record,

  40. that they were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit into this next account.

  41. So fix that in your mind, right?

  42. The disciples filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit

  43. as we are progressing into chapter 14.

  44. But before we get there, before we get into chapter 14 this morning,

  45. I would like to ask and answer two questions concerning

  46. being filled or being full of the Holy Spirit

  47. by way of reminder for those of you who were with us

  48. when we began our study of Acts

  49. and to catch up those of you who were not.

  50. Okay, so you're in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  51. The very first question,

  52. what is the baptism of the Holy Spirit

  53. that Jesus promises in chapter 1, verse 5?

  54. Beginning in verse 4, we can read,

  55. and while staying with them, he, this is Jesus,

  56. ordered them, the disciples,

  57. not to depart from Jerusalem,

  58. but to wait for the promise of the Father,

  59. which he said, you heard from me,

  60. for John baptized with water,

  61. but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit

  62. not many days from now.

  63. So what is this baptism of the Holy Spirit

  64. that Jesus promises in chapter 1, verse 5?

  65. To answer that question,

  66. let's look at how this phrase is used in the New Testament.

  67. In its entirety, it's only used seven times

  68. in the New Testament.

  69. It occurs four times as the prediction

  70. of John the Baptist concerning Jesus, the Christ.

  71. So four of those seven times,

  72. one example, Matthew 3, verse 11.

    Matthew 3:11

  73. John the baptizer said,

  74. I baptize you with water for repentance,

  75. but he who is coming after me

  76. is mightier than I,

  77. whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.

  78. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

  79. You can find similar predictions made by John the Baptist,

  80. Mark 1, 8, Luke 3, 16, John 1, 33.

  81. So in each of the gospel accounts,

  82. John says something to this effect,

  83. four of the seven times.

  84. The next two passages refer directly

  85. to the day of Pentecost.

  86. So speaking in both forward tense, Acts 1, 5, right?

  87. Jesus says, this is going to happen.

  88. You will be baptized.

  89. And then Acts 11, verse 16,

    Acts 11:16

  90. Peter refers back to this promise that Christ made,

  91. Acts 1, verse 5.

    Acts 1:5

  92. I hope you're tracking me right now.

  93. Peter says this,

  94. and I remembered the word of the Lord,

  95. how he said,

  96. John baptized with water,

  97. but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  98. The only other reference,

  99. so we've taken care of six of the seven,

  100. the only other reference,

  101. and it is a variation of this statement.

  102. It's found in the New Testament,

  103. 1 Corinthians 12, verses 12 and 13.

    1 Corinthians 12:12

  104. After Paul has spoken about various spiritual gifts,

  105. he says,

  106. For just as the body is one and has many members,

  107. and all the members of the body,

  108. though many,

  109. are one body,

  110. so it is with Christ.

  111. For in one Spirit,

  112. we were all baptized into one body.

  113. Jews or Greeks,

  114. slaves or free,

  115. and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

  116. The Spirit, right?

  117. 1 Corinthians 12, 12 and 13.

  118. The Spirit was the element

  119. in which the Corinthian believers,

  120. Paul's saying believers everywhere,

  121. have been baptized in the Spirit

  122. as the element they were baptized into, right?

  123. Which moved them positionally into the church.

  124. I encourage you to look at 1 Corinthians 12, 12 and 13

  125. with that in mind later on, right?

  126. The Spirit was the element

  127. in which they were baptized,

  128. and that baptism moved them positionally

  129. into the church.

  130. They were baptized in the Spirit

  131. and found themselves in the church.

  132. This is confirmed in other places.

  133. Paul says in Romans 8 and 9,

  134. anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ

  135. does not belong to Him.

  136. So, to be baptized in the Holy Spirit

  137. is to be regenerate.

  138. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit

  139. is to be regenerate.

  140. If you have believed in Christ,

  141. you've been made a new creation.

  142. And this is baptism in the Holy Spirit.

  143. With that said,

  144. I do not believe that disciples were converted

  145. at this point in Acts chapter 2, right?

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  146. We come to the beginning of Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  147. in the day of Pentecost.

  148. Because they'd already given many evidences

  149. of repentance and faith.

  150. We find ourselves in this interesting

  151. in-between time

  152. with the way in which God is working

  153. in the world by His Spirit.

  154. I think it's important to remember

  155. that we are observing the transition,

  156. Acts chapter 1 and Acts chapter 2,

Acts 1 chapter mention Acts 2 chapter mention

  157. between two economies of the Holy Spirit.

  158. It's moving from one way of functioning

  159. to another way of functioning.

  160. So, I do not think that the promise

  161. in 1.5

  162. that the disciples will be baptized

  163. with the Holy Spirit

  164. not many days from now,

  165. and the fact

  166. that they were all filled

  167. with the Holy Spirit

  168. in chapter 2, verse 4.

  169. So, if you look at chapter 2, verse 4,

  170. are synonymous.

  171. Baptized in the Spirit

  172. and filled with the Spirit

  173. are not synonymous,

  174. but rather that they both happened.

  175. Right?

  176. Chapter 2, verse 4,

  177. they were baptized

  178. and filled.

  179. Baptized into the church,

  180. unified by the gift of the Spirit,

  181. and they were filled

  182. with the Holy Spirit.

  183. And then we see the results of that

  184. as they speak on the day of Pentecost

  185. in many tongues.

  186. Okay?

  187. So, I hope you're with me.

  188. What does it mean?

  189. What is meant by the promise of Jesus

  190. that they will be baptized

  191. with the Spirit?

  192. This thing happens to them.

  193. They're unified.

  194. They're drawn into the church together.

  195. But this is not

  196. the same as being filled with the Spirit.

  197. Right?

  198. We're not like so many these days.

  199. Right?

  200. Not recognizing that we're saved

  201. unless we do some

  202. externally miraculous thing.

  203. Right?

  204. If we have believed in Christ,

  205. that is the miracle

  206. that finds us in the church.

  207. Right?

  208. That is the baptism of the Spirit.

  209. We have been changed.

  210. Therefore, we believe.

  211. Right?

  212. This is the baptism of the Spirit.

  213. Right?

  214. Second question.

  215. What is meant by

  216. they were all filled

  217. with the Holy Spirit?

  218. In chapter 2, verse 4.

  219. Okay?

  220. So, not synonymous with baptized.

  221. Baptism of the Spirit

  222. is to be regenerate.

  223. Right?

  224. To be called gods in Christ.

  225. So, what is meant by

  226. they were filled

  227. with the Holy Spirit?

  228. In chapter 2, verse 4.

  229. The primary role

  230. of the Spirit of God

  231. is the exaltation

  232. of Jesus Christ

  233. in the salvation

  234. and perfection

  235. of His church.

  236. This is the primary role.

  237. He does this in many ways.

  238. But the primary role

  239. of the Spirit of God

  240. is the exaltation

  241. of Jesus Christ

  242. in the salvation

  243. and perfection

  244. of His church.

  245. Let me give you

  246. one textual proof.

  247. If you'd like to go there

  248. with me,

  249. you're welcome to.

  250. Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  251. beginning in verse 14.

  252. Paul writes

  253. to the Ephesian believers,

  254. For this reason

  255. I bow my knees

  256. before the Father,

  257. from whom every family

  258. in heaven

  259. and on earth is named,

  260. that according

  261. to the riches

  262. of His glory

  263. He may grant you

  264. to be strengthened

  265. with power

  266. through His Spirit

  267. in your inner being.

  268. Why?

  269. Verse 17.

  270. Why?

  271. Why is Paul praying

  272. that they would be strengthened

  273. by the power of the Spirit?

  274. Verse 17.

  275. So that Christ

  276. may dwell in your hearts

  277. through faith,

  278. that you being rooted

  279. and grounded in love

  280. may have strength

  281. to comprehend

  282. with all the saints

  283. what is the breadth

  284. and length

  285. and height and depth,

  286. and to know

  287. the love of Christ

  288. that surpasses knowledge,

  289. that you may be filled

  290. with all the fullness

  291. of God.

  292. So Paul's prayer,

  293. my summary,

  294. Paul's prayer

  295. is that they would be

  296. strengthened with power

  297. through the Spirit of God

  298. so that Christ

  299. would be exalted

  300. in their hearts,

  301. that they would comprehend

  302. the sacrifice

  303. that He made

  304. on their behalf.

  305. The Spirit of God

  306. is often called

  307. the shy spirit.

  308. His job is not

  309. to exalt Himself.

  310. His job is to exalt

  311. the risen Christ.

  312. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  313. one of the

  314. old dead guys

  315. that we love,

  316. wrote this,

  317. of this text,

  318. the Spirit does not

  319. glorify Himself,

  320. He glorifies the Son.

  321. This is,

  322. to me,

  323. one of the most amazing

  324. and remarkable things

  325. about the biblical doctrine

  326. of the Holy Spirit.

  327. The Holy Spirit

  328. seems to hide Himself

  329. and to conceal Himself.

  330. He is always,

  331. as it were,

  332. putting the focus

  333. on the Son.

  334. And that is why

  335. I believe,

  336. and I believe profoundly,

  337. that the best test

  338. of all

  339. as to whether we have

  340. received the Spirit

  341. is to ask ourselves,

  342. what do we think of?

  343. And what do we know

  344. about the Son?

  345. Is the Son real to us?

  346. That is the work

  347. of the Spirit.

  348. He is glorified

  349. indirectly.

  350. He is always

  351. pointing us

  352. to the Son.

  353. And so,

  354. you see how easily

  355. we go astray

  356. and become heretical

  357. if we concentrate

  358. over much

  359. and in an unscriptural manner

  360. upon the Spirit Himself.

  361. Yes,

  362. we must realize

  363. that He dwells within us,

  364. but His work

  365. in dwelling within us

  366. is to glorify the Son

  367. and to bring to us

  368. that blessed knowledge

  369. of the Son

  370. and His wondrous love

  371. to us.

  372. It is He

  373. who strengthens us

  374. with the might

  375. in the inner man

  376. that we may know

  377. this love,

  378. this love

  379. of Christ.

  380. So,

  381. the primary role

  382. of the Spirit of God

  383. is the exaltation

  384. of Jesus Christ

  385. in the salvation

  386. and perfection

  387. of His church.

  388. And,

  389. the primary means

  390. that He uses

  391. to accomplish this

  392. is the Word of God

  393. believed and spoken

  394. by the people of God.

  395. The primary way

  396. that the Spirit of God

  397. does this work

  398. of the salvation

  399. and perfection

  400. of the church

  401. of Jesus Christ

  402. is the Word of God

  403. believed and spoken

  404. by the people

  405. of God.

  406. So,

  407. now,

  408. we are one time

  409. baptized

  410. in the Holy Spirit,

  411. but it is possible

  412. as a follower

  413. of Jesus

  414. to be full

  415. of the Spirit

  416. or to not

  417. be full

  418. of the Spirit.

  419. This can be

  420. an ongoing

  421. fluctuation

  422. in the life

  423. of a believer.

  424. We have the Spirit,

  425. but it is possible

  426. to be filled

  427. or full

  428. of the Spirit

  429. or to not be filled

  430. or full

  431. of the Spirit.

  432. This is why

  433. Paul exhorts

  434. the Ephesian believers

  435. to be filled

  436. with the Spirit

  437. in Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  438. So,

  439. please do turn there

  440. with me.

  441. Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  442. You're going to need

  443. another bookmark

  444. or another finger.

  445. Some fancy Bibles

  446. have multiple

  447. ribbon markers.

  448. Hebrews.

  449. So,

  450. Paul is giving

  451. exhortation,

  452. a strong command

  453. to the Ephesian

  454. believers here.

  455. Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  456. beginning in verse 18.

  457. He says,

  458. and do not

  459. get drunk

  460. with wine,

  461. for that is

  462. debauchery,

  463. but be filled

  464. with the Spirit.

  465. There's a command

  466. given here.

  467. Be filled

  468. with the Spirit.

  469. And I would suggest

  470. to you

  471. that therefore

  472. there's some activity

  473. on our part

  474. in the work

  475. of sanctification

  476. that Paul says

  477. to us,

  478. be filled.

  479. We should be

  480. able to be filled

  481. with the Spirit.

  482. And there's going

  483. to be some things

  484. that are going

  485. to result from this,

  486. right?

  487. Verse 19

  488. through 25.

  489. I'm going to fly

  490. through it really quickly.

  491. Addressing one another.

  492. Being filled

  493. with the Spirit

  494. means we will

  495. address one another

  496. in psalms and hymns

  497. and spiritual songs,

  498. singing and making

  499. melody to the Lord

  500. with your heart,

  501. giving thanks

  502. always and for

  503. everything to God

  504. the Father

  505. in the name

  506. of our Lord

  507. Jesus Christ.

  508. Verse 21.

  509. Submitting to one another

  510. out of reverence

  511. for Christ.

  512. Wives,

  513. submit to your own

  514. husbands as to the Lord.

  515. For the husband

  516. is the head of the wife,

  517. even as Christ

  518. is the head of the church,

  519. his body,

  520. and is himself

  521. its Savior.

  522. Verse 24.

  523. Now as the church

  524. submits to Christ,

  525. so also wives

  526. should submit in everything

  527. to their husbands.

  528. Husbands,

  529. love your wives

  530. as Christ loved the church

  531. and gave himself

  532. up for her.

  533. And it goes on.

  534. So there's these outflows,

  535. these results

  536. of being filled

  537. with the Spirit.

  538. Christian living.

  539. We do the things.

  540. We're obedient

  541. to the high calling

  542. of God

  543. in Christ

  544. that's laid out

  545. for us in the Scripture.

  546. We're able to do

  547. these things

  548. because we are,

  549. in fact,

  550. filled with the Spirit.

  551. But it's still

  552. a little abstract

  553. at that point,

  554. is it not?

  555. Like,

  556. so what does it mean?

  557. How is it that

  558. I'm filled

  559. with the Spirit?

  560. Keep your finger

  561. in Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  562. It's going to get

  563. challenging now,

  564. I know.

  565. And turn to Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  566. chapter 3.

  567. There's a parallel text

  568. in Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  569. to Ephesians 5,

  570. 18 through 25.

  571. Beginning in verse 16.

  572. This is shorter.

  573. Beginning in verse 16.

  574. And I'm going to pick up

  575. halfway through it.

  576. You may track my logic

  577. if you're paying

  578. careful attention.

  579. But halfway through,

  580. Paul says,

  581. teaching

  582. and admonishing

  583. one another

  584. in all wisdom,

  585. singing,

  586. this should sound familiar,

  587. psalms and hymns

  588. and spiritual songs,

  589. with thankfulness

  590. in your hearts

  591. to God.

  592. And whatever you do

  593. in word or deed,

  594. do everything

  595. in the name

  596. of the Lord Jesus,

  597. giving thanks

  598. to God the Father

  599. through Him.

  600. Wives submit

  601. to your husbands

  602. as is fitting

  603. in the Lord.

  604. Husbands,

  605. love your wives

  606. and do not be harsh

  607. with them.

  608. So parallel thing,

  609. he's walking through

  610. the same things,

  611. the same results

  612. of what it means

  613. in Ephesians chapter 5

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  614. to be filled

  615. with the Spirit.

  616. Right?

  617. Are you tracking me?

  618. You can flip back and forth.

  619. I'm okay with that

  620. if I hear flipping.

  621. Right?

  622. Notice the parallels

  623. between the two.

  624. But there's a difference.

  625. In Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  626. the beginning of verse 16,

  627. he says something different

  628. than be filled

  629. with the Spirit.

  630. What does he say?

  631. Let the Word of Christ

  632. dwell in you richly.

  633. So,

  634. take from this,

  635. from these two texts,

  636. that to be filled

  637. with the Spirit

  638. is to let the Word of Christ

  639. dwell in us

  640. richly.

  641. And there's a lot

  642. of meditation

  643. that could happen

  644. on that.

  645. What does it mean

  646. for the Word of God

  647. to dwell in me richly?

  648. Certainly,

  649. it starts with

  650. reading the Word of God.

  651. Okay?

  652. We're not going to go

  653. too much beyond that today.

  654. Right?

  655. But reading it,

  656. picking it up regularly,

  657. knowing the Word of God

  658. is a starting point

  659. for letting the Word of God

  660. dwell in you

  661. richly.

  662. Now,

  663. if that's just far

  664. too abstract for you,

  665. right?

  666. If you go,

  667. oh,

  668. come on,

  669. Nathan.

  670. You're drawing

  671. some major connections

  672. between the two.

  673. I defend

  674. they're good connections.

  675. But it helps,

  676. I think,

  677. to go to another text.

  678. So,

  679. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  680. You'll want to go there too.

  681. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  682. verses 5 through 9.

  683. And I'll apologize to you

  684. if I'm moving too fast for you,

  685. but I know how long my notes are.

  686. So,

  687. you don't know that,

  688. I know that,

  689. but I'm trying to push,

  690. push back to Acts chapter 14

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  691. and to the text itself today.

  692. I think this is so important,

  693. though,

  694. as we walk into Acts 14,

  695. right?

  696. They're filled with the Spirit.

  697. What happens,

  698. right?

  699. Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  700. Paul and Barnabas go

  701. and they're filled with the Spirit.

  702. What happens?

  703. What's the result of them

  704. being filled with the Spirit?

  705. Okay,

  706. so Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:5–9

  707. verses 5 through 9.

  708. So,

  709. right at the outset here,

  710. Paul is drawing this dichotomy,

  711. right?

  712. You're in one of these two categories,

  713. right?

  714. If you live according to the flesh,

  715. you set your mind on things of the flesh.

  716. If you live according to the Spirit,

  717. you set your mind

  718. on the things of the Spirit.

  719. Verse 6.

  720. For to set the mind on the flesh is death,

  721. but to set the mind on the Spirit

  722. is life and peace.

  723. For the mind that is set on the flesh

  724. is hostile toward God,

  725. for it does not submit to God's law.

  726. Indeed,

  727. it cannot.

  728. Those who are in the flesh

  729. cannot please God.

  730. So,

  731. stated rather strongly in the negative,

  732. right?

  733. The person who is not a follower of Jesus Christ,

  734. does not have the Spirit of God,

  735. cannot set their mind on the things of God,

  736. right?

  737. And the result of that

  738. is that they cannot keep the law.

  739. They're incapable of doing that,

  740. and they cannot please God.

  741. So,

  742. what is the adverse,

  743. right?

  744. If you took this

  745. and stated in the positive,

  746. then,

  747. those who are in Christ,

  748. who have the Spirit of God,

  749. who set their minds

  750. on the things of the Spirit,

  751. can keep the law,

  752. can be obedient,

  753. and therefore please God.

  754. So,

  755. are you catching the connection here?

  756. The Christian life

  757. is a very mindful life.

  758. Our minds are constantly active,

  759. set on the things of the Spirit.

  760. But what are the things of the Spirit?

  761. The book that he inspired,

  762. the closed canon,

  763. that he gave us this text.

  764. He set on mine.

  765. So,

  766. are you with me now?

  767. Does Romans 8,

  768. 5 and 9 cap that off for you?

  769. I hope it does.

  770. I hope it does.

  771. I don't have time to convince you further.

  772. So,

  773. the primary role

  774. of the Spirit of God

  775. is the exaltation of Jesus Christ

  776. and the salvation

  777. and perfection of his church.

  778. And the primary means

  779. that he uses to accomplish this

  780. is the Word of God

  781. believed and spoken

  782. by the people of God.

  783. I'll email that to you

  784. if you want it later.

  785. There's a wonderful quote.

  786. I've used it multiple times

  787. since we started studying Acts,

  788. but I'm going to read it to you

  789. one more time.

  790. Dan Phillips,

  791. who is a contemporary pastor,

  792. said this,

  793. Show me a person

  794. obsessed with the Holy Spirit

  795. and his gifts,

  796. real or imagined,

  797. and I will show you

  798. a person not filled

  799. with the Holy Spirit.

  800. Show me a person

  801. focused on the person

  802. and work of Jesus Christ,

  803. never tiring of learning about him,

  804. thinking about him,

  805. boasting of him,

  806. speaking about and for and to him,

  807. thrilled and entranced

  808. with his perfections and beauty,

  809. finding ways to serve

  810. and exalt him,

  811. tirelessly exploring ways

  812. to spend and be spent for him,

  813. growing in character

  814. to be more and more like him,

  815. and I will show you

  816. a person who is filled

  817. with the Holy Spirit.

  818. Recall Acts chapter 13,

    Acts 13:52

  819. verse 52,

  820. and the disciples were filled

  821. with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  822. And yes, you can take your fingers

  823. out of all those spots,

  824. and let's observe an episode

  825. in Jesus' heavenly ministry

  826. by the agency of the Holy Spirit

  827. in the lives of his followers.

  828. Beginning in verse 1

  829. of Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  830. Now at Iconium,

  831. they entered together

  832. into the Jewish synagogue

  833. and spoke in such a way

  834. that a great number

  835. of both Jews and Greeks believed.

  836. But the unbelieving Jews

  837. stirred up the Gentiles

  838. and poisoned their minds

  839. against the brothers.

  840. So they remained for a long time,

  841. speaking boldly for the Lord,

  842. who bore witness

  843. to the word of his grace,

  844. granting signs and wonders

  845. to be done by their hands.

  846. But the people of the city

  847. were divided.

  848. Some sided with the Jews

  849. and some with the apostles.

  850. When an attempt was made

  851. by both Gentiles and Jews

  852. with their rulers

  853. to mistreat them

  854. and to stone them,

  855. they learned of it

  856. and fled to Lystra

  857. and Derbe,

  858. cities of Lycaania

  859. and to the surrounding country.

  860. And there they continued

  861. to preach the gospel.

  862. Now at Lystra,

  863. there was a man sitting

  864. who could not use his feet.

  865. He was crippled from birth

  866. and had never walked.

  867. He listened to Paul speaking

  868. and Paul,

  869. looking intently at him

  870. and seeing that he had faith

  871. to be met well,

  872. said in a loud voice,

  873. stand upright on your feet.

  874. And he sprang up

  875. and began walking.

  876. When the crowd saw

  877. what Paul had done,

  878. they lifted up their voices,

  879. saying in Lycauanian,

  880. the gods have come down to us

  881. in the likeness of men.

  882. Barnabas they called Zeus

  883. and Paul Hermes

  884. because he was the chief speaker.

  885. And the priest of Zeus,

  886. whose temple was at the entrance

  887. to the city,

  888. brought oxen and garlands

  889. to the gates

  890. and wanted to offer sacrifice

  891. with the crowds.

  892. But when the apostles Barnabas

  893. and Paul heard of it,

  894. they tore their garments

  895. and rushed out into the crowd,

  896. crying out,

  897. Men, why are you doing these things?

  898. We also are men

  899. of like nature with you.

  900. And we bring you good news

  901. that you should turn

  902. from these vain things

  903. to a living God

  904. who made the heaven

  905. and the earth

  906. and the sea

  907. and all that is in them.

  908. In past generations,

  909. he allowed all the nations

  910. to walk in their own ways.

  911. Yet he did not leave himself

  912. without witness,

  913. for he did good

  914. by giving you rains from heaven

  915. and fruitful seasons,

  916. satisfying your hearts

  917. with food and gladness.

  918. Even with these words,

  919. they scarcely restrain the people

  920. from offering sacrifice to them.

  921. But Jews came from Antioch

  922. and Iconium

  923. and having persuaded the crowds,

  924. they stoned Paul

  925. and dragged him out of the city,

  926. supposing that he was dead.

  927. But when the disciples

  928. gathered about him,

  929. he rose up

  930. and entered the city

  931. and on the next day

  932. he went on with Barnabas

  933. to Derbe.

  934. When they had preached

  935. the gospel to that city

  936. and had made many disciples,

  937. they returned to Lystra

  938. and to Iconium

  939. and to Antioch,

  940. strengthening the souls

  941. of the disciples,

  942. encouraging them

  943. to continue in the faith

  944. and saying that

  945. through many tribulations

  946. we must enter

  947. the kingdom of God.

  948. When they had appointed elders

  949. for them in every church

  950. with prayer and fasting,

  951. they committed them

  952. to the Lord

  953. in whom they had believed.

  954. Then they passed through Pisidia

  955. and came to Pamphylia.

  956. When they had spoken the word

  957. in Perga,

  958. they went down to Italia

  959. and from there

  960. they sailed to Antioch

  961. where they had been commended

  962. to the grace of God

  963. for the work

  964. that they had fulfilled.

  965. And when they arrived

  966. and gathered the church together,

  967. they declared all that God

  968. had done with them

  969. and how he had opened

  970. a door of faith

  971. to the Gentiles

  972. and they remained

  973. no little time

  974. with the disciples.

  975. Beloved,

  976. this is God's word to us

  977. written for his glory

  978. and our good.

  979. We would all do well

  980. to listen to it

  981. in order to believe

  982. its promises

  983. and obey its commands.

  984. Our study in this chapter

  985. is going to be structured

  986. along the following

  987. seven points.

  988. I'm going to do my very best

  989. to get through

  990. the first three this morning,

  991. although that's looking

  992. dismal already.

  993. If I'm unable

  994. in a very MacArthurian way,

  995. MacArthurian, yep,

  996. that works.

  997. I'm going to roll

  998. the points I can't make

  999. into next week

  1000. and maybe the week

  1001. after that.

  1002. But this will be

  1003. the structure

  1004. for our study

  1005. of Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

1006. The person who is filled

  1007. with the Spirit,

  1008. number one,

  1009. is fruitful.

  1010. Number two,

  1011. is opposed.

  1012. Number three,

  1013. speaks boldly.

  1014. Number four,

  1015. acts humbly.

  1016. Number five,

  1017. develops disciples.

  1018. Number six,

  1019. is committed.

  1020. And number seven,

  1021. loves fellowship.

  1022. So seven points.

1023. Let's start with the first one.

1024. The person who is filled

  1025. with the Spirit

  1026. is fruitful.

1027. On your bulletin this morning,

  1028. it was included

  1029. a Charles Spurgeon quote.

  1030. Spurgeon once said,

  1031. there will never be

  1032. any mighty work

  1033. come from us

  1034. unless there is first

  1035. a mighty work

  1036. in us.

  1037. No man truly labors

  1038. for souls

  1039. unless the Holy Spirit

  1040. has first worked

  1041. mightily in him.

1042. Now as soon as I say,

1043. the person who is filled

  1044. with the Spirit

  1045. is fruitful,

  1046. if you're a good student

  1047. of the Bible,

  1048. you may think

  1049. that I am preaching

  1050. from the wrong text.

  1051. You may think,

  1052. wait a minute,

1053. this is not Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5:22–24

  1054. verses 22 through 24

  1055. which says,

1056. the fruit of the Spirit

  1057. is love,

  1058. joy,

  1059. peace,

  1060. patience,

  1061. kindness,

  1062. goodness,

  1063. faithfulness,

  1064. gentleness,

  1065. self-control.

  1066. Against such things,

  1067. there is no law.

  1068. I'm essentially saying

  1069. the fruit is different

  1070. than these fruits.

1071. Why am I able to do that?

  1072. In Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  1073. Paul talks about fruits

  1074. that are motivational fruits.

  1075. Fruits that generate activity.

1076. He goes on in verse 24

  1077. of Galatians 5,

  1078. and those who belong

  1079. to Christ Jesus

  1080. have crucified the flesh

  1081. with its passions

  1082. and desires.

  1083. desires.

1084. So the fruit of the Spirit

  1085. are these replacement

  1086. passions and desires.

  1087. And those passions

  1088. and desires

  1089. generate work.

  1090. Things that we do

  1091. as a result

  1092. of these passions

  1093. and desires.

  1094. So when I say

  1095. the person

1096. who is filled with the Spirit

  1097. is fruitful,

1098. I mean in the Mark

    Mark 4:20

  1099. chapter 4,

  1100. verse 20 sense,

  1101. parable of the sower.

1102. But those that were sown

  1103. on the good soil

  1104. are the ones

  1105. who hear the Word

  1106. and accept it

  1107. and bear fruit

  1108. thirtyfold

  1109. and sixtyfold

  1110. and a hundredfold.

  1111. God intends to save

  1112. His people

1113. and He uses the proclamation

  1114. of His Word

  1115. to accomplish this.

  1116. Due to being filled

  1117. with the Spirit,

  1118. Paul and Barnabas

  1119. are fruitful

  1120. in their ministry.

  1121. They see conversions.

  1122. Right?

  1123. Verse 1.

1124. We see the very evidence

  1125. of this right

  1126. in the first verse

  1127. that they speak

  1128. in such a way

  1129. that a great number

  1130. of both Jews

  1131. and Greeks

  1132. believed.

  1133. And the temptation

  1134. at this point

  1135. is to quickly say

  1136. what is this way

  1137. that they spoke in?

  1138. Right?

1139. What is this such a way

  1140. that they spoke in?

  1141. And to falsely think

1142. that it was some methodology

  1143. on their part

  1144. to see people

  1145. converted to Christ.

1146. There are a lot of people

  1147. these days

1148. that teach lots of methods

  1149. to share the gospel

  1150. of Jesus Christ.

  1151. But beloved,

1152. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1153. is the power

  1154. of salvation.

  1155. We preach the gospel.

  1156. The Spirit of God

  1157. uses the gospel

  1158. to bring about those

  1159. He intends

  1160. to believe.

  1161. We can be sure

  1162. that Paul

  1163. didn't do

  1164. some fancy thing.

  1165. There were no

  1166. parlor tricks.

  1167. Even as he pleaded

  1168. with them

  1169. to place their faith

  1170. in Christ

1171. and he writes a bit of this

  1172. to the Corinthian church

  1173. in 1 Corinthians 2

    1 Corinthians 2:1–5

  1174. verses 1-5.

  1175. He says,

1176. And when I came to you,

  1177. brothers,

  1178. did not come proclaiming

  1179. to you the testimony

1180. of God with lofty speech

  1181. or wisdom,

1182. for I decided to do

  1183. nothing among you

  1184. except Jesus Christ

  1185. and Him crucified.

1186. And I was with you

  1187. in weakness

  1188. and in fear

  1189. and much trembling

  1190. and my speech

  1191. and my message

  1192. were not in plausible

  1193. words of wisdom

  1194. but in demonstration

  1195. of the Spirit

  1196. and of power.

  1197. So the way

  1198. that he came

  1199. and can we not

  1200. come alongside Paul

  1201. and say,

  1202. yes,

  1203. I feel the same

  1204. weakness

  1205. and fear

  1206. and trembling

  1207. in the mission

  1208. of God

  1209. in my life.

  1210. Paul didn't try

  1211. to dress that up.

  1212. He just spoke

  1213. the Gospel

  1214. in demonstration

  1215. of the Spirit

  1216. and of power.

  1217. And then he says

  1218. in verse 5

  1219. of 1 Corinthians 2,

  1220. so that your faith

  1221. might not rest

  1222. in the wisdom

  1223. of men

  1224. but in the power

  1225. of God.

  1226. There are many

  1227. preachers today

  1228. who think

  1229. that if they craft

  1230. the perfect sermon

  1231. it will generate

  1232. results.

  1233. And it will

  1234. of a certain kind.

  1235. I am deeply aware

  1236. and I don't always

  1237. function out of this

  1238. reality

1239. but I am deeply aware

  1240. that if I preach

  1241. the Gospel

  1242. of Jesus Christ,

  1243. God will change

  1244. people's hearts.

  1245. I with Paul

  1246. say of Romans

  1247. 1.16,

1248. for I am not ashamed

  1249. of the Gospel

1250. for it is the power

  1251. of God for salvation

  1252. to everyone

  1253. who believes.

  1254. So the,

  1255. such a way

  1256. that Paul

  1257. and Barnabas

  1258. are speaking

  1259. is that they are

  1260. filled

  1261. with the Spirit

  1262. and they are fruitful.

  1263. They are fruitful

  1264. at Iconium.

  1265. We can see

  1266. that the,

  1267. first that these

  1268. great number

  1269. of Jews

  1270. and Greeks

  1271. believe

  1272. and then when

  1273. an attempt

  1274. was made

  1275. by both Gentiles

  1276. and Jews

  1277. is verse 5

  1278. to mistreat them

  1279. and to stone them.

  1280. They learn of it.

  1281. This is not

  1282. a matter of cowardice.

  1283. This is a matter

  1284. of prudence.

  1285. And they flee

  1286. to a region,

  1287. Lystra,

  1288. Derbe,

  1289. cities of Lycaonia.

  1290. Verse 7 says,

  1291. and there

  1292. they continued

  1293. to preach

  1294. the Gospel.

  1295. They continue

  1296. to preach

  1297. and they continue

  1298. to be fruitful.

  1299. In Lystra,

  1300. after Paul

  1301. is stoned

  1302. and presumed

  1303. dead,

  1304. which Luke

  1305. mentions in

  1306. such passing

  1307. way,

  1308. verse 20,

  1309. but when the

  1310. disciples gathered

  1311. around him.

  1312. This is new

  1313. territory.

  1314. Remember,

  1315. beloved,

  1316. Paul and Barnabas

  1317. go to Lystra.

  1318. There they are

  1319. proclaiming the

  1320. Gospel of Jesus

  1321. Christ.

  1322. We get no

  1323. record of converts.

  1324. converts.

  1325. The story about

  1326. them being praised

  1327. as Zeus

  1328. and Hermes.

  1329. But when

  1330. he's stoned

  1331. and drug out

  1332. of the city,

  1333. there's a group

  1334. of disciples

  1335. that gather

  1336. around him.

  1337. Followers of

  1338. Jesus are there

  1339. gathered around

  1340. him when he

  1341. stands back up.

  1342. So there's

  1343. fruit in Lystra.

  1344. There's also

  1345. fruit in Derbe.

  1346. When they had

  1347. preached the Gospel

  1348. to that city,

  1349. this is verse 21,

  1350. and had made

  1351. many disciples.

  1352. So the person

  1353. who was filled

  1354. with the Spirit

  1355. is fruitful.

  1356. But you may

  1357. not be fruitful

  1358. in exactly

  1359. the same

  1360. measure.

  1361. I am not

  1362. this morning

  1363. suggesting

  1364. that if your

  1365. life doesn't

  1366. look like the

  1367. life of Paul

  1368. and Barnabas

  1369. on their first

  1370. missionary journey,

  1371. that you were

  1372. not Spirit-filled.

  1373. It's not what

  1374. I'm suggesting

  1375. this morning.

  1376. But what I am

  1377. suggesting is that

  1378. the person who

  1379. is filled with

  1380. the Spirit

  1381. will be used

  1382. by God

  1383. for the exaltation

  1384. of Jesus Christ.

  1385. And that,

  1386. in some measure,

  1387. this means you

  1388. will make

  1389. disciples of

  1390. Jesus Christ.

  1391. This means there

  1392. needs to be

  1393. the evidencing

  1394. of the Spirit

  1395. of God

  1396. filling your life.

  1397. You need to be

  1398. seeing people

  1399. come to faith

  1400. in some measure.

  1401. Remember Mark

  1402. 4.20.

1403. I read it to you

  1404. a bit ago.

  1405. Those that were

  1406. sown on the good

  1407. soil.

  1408. Beloved,

  1409. are you good soil?

  1410. are the ones

  1411. who hear the Word

  1412. and accept it

  1413. and bear fruit.

  1414. We're given

  1415. some categories.

  1416. I don't think

  1417. they're meant

  1418. to be strict

  1419. categories.

  1420. 30-fold

  1421. and 60-fold

  1422. and 100-fold.

  1423. Paul and Barnabas

  1424. certainly are

  1425. our 100-fold

  1426. category.

  1427. We need,

  1428. as followers

  1429. of Jesus Christ,

  1430. to fall

  1431. somewhere

  1432. in there.

  1433. People who are

  1434. filled with the Spirit

  1435. will be fruitful.

  1436. Now,

  1437. let's talk

1438. in the bit of time

  1439. I have left

  1440. about the external

  1441. miracles found

  1442. in our text.

  1443. There's a couple

  1444. things that happen

  1445. that are rather

  1446. amazing things

  1447. that happen.

  1448. Verse 3,

  1449. we see that signs

  1450. and wonders

  1451. are done by the

  1452. hands of Paul

  1453. and Barnabas.

  1454. Beginning in

  1455. verse 8,

  1456. there's a man

  1457. who's been crippled

  1458. since birth.

  1459. That's significant

  1460. and he's never

  1461. been able to walk.

  1462. It's not just

1463. that he has a sprain

  1464. and they give him

  1465. a little word

  1466. and he has enough

  1467. gumption to get up

1468. and walk on the sprain.

1469. His feet are messed up.

  1470. He's never been able

  1471. to walk

  1472. and because of

  1473. what Paul says

  1474. to him,

1475. God works in his life,

1476. he's able to spring up.

  1477. Verse 10,

  1478. and begin walking.

  1479. So these rather

  1480. externally miraculous

  1481. things happen.

  1482. There are a wide

  1483. variety of views

  1484. out there

  1485. these days

  1486. about how

  1487. that functions

  1488. now.

  1489. If we're now

  1490. filled with the Spirit,

1491. do we have the power

  1492. as God's people

  1493. to do this?

  1494. The question at hand.

1495. Do I have the power

  1496. to say to somebody

  1497. with a lifelong ailment,

  1498. it's healed?

  1499. And there's a spectrum.

  1500. There's from one end

  1501. something called

  1502. cessationism,

1503. which would be to say

  1504. that all gifts

  1505. of healing

  1506. and tongues

  1507. have completely ceased.

  1508. The other end

  1509. of that spectrum

  1510. is called continuationism.

  1511. Active.

  1512. Those gifts

  1513. are still active.

  1514. And there's a lot

  1515. of people that fall

  1516. somewhere in between

  1517. those two.

1518. I'm going to tell you

  1519. that I'm a little more

  1520. towards this

  1521. cessationist spot.

  1522. I don't know

  1523. that I'm quite

  1524. planting my feet

  1525. in that camp

  1526. because I don't think

  1527. we have really clear

  1528. biblical evidence

  1529. that those gifts

  1530. have in fact stopped.

  1531. I don't think

  1532. there's any like

  1533. clear explicit

  1534. biblical evidence

  1535. that just says

  1536. no more.

  1537. God never works

  1538. in that way

  1539. any longer

  1540. through the lives

  1541. of his people.

  1542. I do have a problem

  1543. with the far

  1544. other end of it.

  1545. And I've kind of

  1546. hinted at that

  1547. along the way.

  1548. People and denominations

  1549. that exalt the Spirit

  1550. above Christ

  1551. is troubling to me.

  1552. It's very troubling

  1553. to me.

1554. We also need to note

  1555. going on here

  1556. and for our day

  1557. that there are

  1558. external miracles

  1559. happening in our text.

  1560. People,

  1561. signs and wonders,

  1562. they're able to see

  1563. these things happen.

  1564. There's a man

  1565. who's now able

  1566. to walk.

  1567. But more than that,

  1568. more importantly

  1569. than that,

  1570. there are internal

  1571. miracles happening.

  1572. The many people,

  1573. not counted specifically

  1574. in this text,

  1575. that have believed.

  1576. They've become regenerate.

  1577. They've received

  1578. the baptism

  1579. of the Holy Spirit.

  1580. They were once

  1581. enemies of God.

  1582. They now have become

  1583. his friends.

  1584. This is an incredibly

  1585. miraculous thing

  1586. and it still happens

  1587. in our day.

  1588. I hope that you

  1589. have your heart

1590. warmed on a regular basis

  1591. by seeing people

  1592. come to faith

  1593. in Christ.

  1594. It's miraculous.

  1595. People so set

  1596. against the God

  1597. of heaven and earth

  1598. suddenly turned

  1599. toward him.

  1600. It's extremely

  1601. heartwarming.

  1602. So,

  1603. miracles do still

  1604. happen,

  1605. undoubtedly.

  1606. Internal miracles,

  1607. which I would say

  1608. we should rejoice for

  1609. because they have

  1610. eternal significance

  1611. primarily.

  1612. So,

1613. let me say a few

  1614. things about miracles.

  1615. Okay?

  1616. So,

  1617. wherever you fall

  1618. on this spectrum,

1619. I want to give you

  1620. some tools to help

  1621. you filter through

  1622. supposed or possibly

  1623. real miracles

  1624. in our day.

  1625. Okay?

  1626. Miracles

  1627. are always used,

  1628. always used,

  1629. to confirm

  1630. the message

  1631. of Jesus Christ.

  1632. There is never

  1633. a time in the

  1634. scripture that a

  1635. miracle happens

  1636. and the gospel is

  1637. not also being

  1638. preached.

  1639. Right?

  1640. Or the miracle

  1641. happens to set the

  1642. stage for the gospel

  1643. to be preached.

  1644. Never a time.

  1645. And in fact,

  1646. they're very,

  1647. very careful

  1648. to note that

  1649. for us.

  1650. So,

  1651. if you watch

  1652. some YouTube video

  1653. of a bunch of

  1654. high school kids

  1655. praying for someone

  1656. who suddenly just

  1657. feels a little better,

1658. that pain in my knee

  1659. is gone,

  1660. and the video cuts,

  1661. they never talk

  1662. about Christ.

  1663. They might pray

  1664. in His name,

  1665. but they never share

1666. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1667. with people.

  1668. Be wary

  1669. of things

  1670. like that.

  1671. Miracles are

  1672. always used

  1673. to confirm

  1674. the message

  1675. of Jesus Christ.

  1676. This is why

  1677. Jesus performed

  1678. miracles Himself

  1679. by His hands.

  1680. John 10,

  1681. 37,

  1682. 38.

  1683. Jesus says,

  1684. I am not doing,

1685. if I am not doing

  1686. the works of my

  1687. Father,

  1688. then do not

  1689. believe Me.

1690. But if I do them,

  1691. even though you

  1692. do not believe Me,

  1693. believe the works.

  1694. Works are meant

  1695. to draw your attention

  1696. that you may know

  1697. and understand

  1698. that the Father

  1699. is in Me

  1700. and I am in

  1701. the Father.

  1702. The fact that

  1703. Jesus was performing

  1704. miracles was to

  1705. draw attention

  1706. that He was from

  1707. the Father

  1708. and the message

  1709. He was speaking

  1710. was true.

  1711. This is why

  1712. Jesus continued

  1713. to perform miracles

  1714. by the agency

  1715. of the Holy Spirit

  1716. in the lives

  1717. of His followers.

  1718. Again,

  1719. look at verse 3,

  1720. chapter 14.

  1721. So they remained

  1722. for a long time.

1723. What does it say next?

  1724. Speaking boldly

  1725. for the Lord.

1726. And what does God do?

  1727. Christ,

  1728. working in them

  1729. by the agency

  1730. of the Spirit

  1731. who bore witness

  1732. to the word

  1733. of His grace

  1734. granting signs

  1735. and wonders

  1736. to be done

  1737. by their hands.

  1738. Confirms the message

  1739. of Jesus Christ

  1740. that they're proclaiming.

  1741. Before the man

  1742. in Lystra

  1743. is healed,

  1744. Luke records

  1745. in verse 7,

  1746. and there they

  1747. continue to

  1748. preach the gospel.

  1749. It's in the midst

  1750. of them preaching

  1751. the gospel

  1752. and this man

  1753. hears the gospel

  1754. that Paul sees him,

  1755. sees that he has

  1756. faith to be healed

  1757. and heals him.

  1758. Be wary

  1759. of any ministry

  1760. who makes it

  1761. their aim

  1762. to perform

  1763. external miracles,

  1764. that that is

  1765. their ministry.

  1766. If they gather

  1767. together and say,

  1768. let's go out

  1769. on the street

  1770. and perform miracles

  1771. today.

  1772. The apostles

  1773. never sought

  1774. to perform miracles.

  1775. There's never

  1776. this stated intention.

  1777. It's time, guys.

1778. This part of our ministry

  1779. where we go

  1780. and perform miracles,

  1781. it just happens.

  1782. Along the way,

1783. being filled with the Spirit,

  1784. they do these miraculous

  1785. things for the sake

  1786. of the proclamation

  1787. of the gospel.

  1788. The apostles were

  1789. always preaching

  1790. the gospel

  1791. when a miracle

  1792. was performed

  1793. or followed the miracles

  1794. with gospel proclamation

  1795. when one was

  1796. performed.

  1797. Suppose that

  1798. external miracles

  1799. performed by individuals

  1800. who do not

  1801. preach the gospel

  1802. of Jesus Christ.

  1803. You can name

  1804. some of those people.

  1805. Benny Hinn

  1806. does not preach

  1807. the gospel

  1808. of Jesus Christ

  1809. yet claims

  1810. to perform miracles.

  1811. In our backyard,

  1812. beloved,

  1813. Jensen Franklin

  1814. does not preach

  1815. the gospel

  1816. of Jesus Christ.

  1817. He preaches

  1818. a prosperity gospel

  1819. and yet

  1820. claims to perform

  1821. miracles.

  1822. It's damnable

1823. to do such a thing.

  1824. It's misleading

1825. to do such a thing

  1826. and it should

  1827. make us angry.

1828. We ought to be offended

  1829. that God

  1830. is offended.

  1831. The third part

  1832. of the Trinity

  1833. that lives within us

  1834. is claimed,

  1835. he's paraded about

  1836. in a way

  1837. that is not

  1838. consistent

  1839. with what the Bible

  1840. says he does.

  1841. Primary work,

  1842. always about

  1843. the exaltation

  1844. of Jesus Christ.

1845. So what those men do

  1846. may be spiritual

  1847. in nature,

1848. but I can promise you

  1849. that it is not

  1850. the work

  1851. of the Holy Spirit.

  1852. Very, very cautious

  1853. and warn people

  1854. that you know

  1855. and love

  1856. of the same.

  1857. Well, I made it

  1858. through point one.

  1859. John MacArthur

1860. would be so proud of me.

1861. Okay, so I'm going to

  1862. conclude this morning.

  1863. with some questions

  1864. for your further

  1865. consideration.

  1866. Number one,

  1867. do you have

  1868. the Spirit of God?

  1869. If you recall

  1870. the terminology

  1871. Jesus and Paul used,

  1872. have you been

  1873. baptized

  1874. in the Spirit?

  1875. Do you have

  1876. the Spirit of God?

  1877. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  1878. talked about,

  1879. I read that long

  1880. quotation to you,

  1881. what do we think,

  1882. what do we know,

1883. is Jesus real to us?

  1884. It's a great evidence

1885. that the Spirit of God

1886. is working in our life.

  1887. Don't wait

  1888. to speak

  1889. in some other language.

  1890. What do you know

  1891. to be true

  1892. of Christ?

  1893. And how is it

1894. that the Spirit of God

  1895. is working in you?

  1896. Last week,

  1897. I read this quote

  1898. from Charles Spurgeon.

  1899. If you can sin

1900. and not weep over it,

1901. you are an heir of hell.

1902. If you can go into sin

  1903. and afterwards

  1904. feel satisfied

  1905. to have done so,

1906. you are on the road

  1907. to destruction.

  1908. If there are no

  1909. prickings of conscience,

  1910. no inward torments,

  1911. no bleeding wounds,

1912. if you have no throbs

  1913. and heavings

  1914. of a bosom

  1915. that cannot rest,

  1916. if your soul

  1917. never feels filled

  1918. with wormwood

  1919. and gall,

  1920. when you know

1921. that you have done evil,

  1922. you are no child

  1923. of God.

  1924. Do you have

  1925. the Spirit of God?

  1926. Are you being moved

  1927. toward holiness?

  1928. Second question,

1929. if you have the Spirit,

1930. and I hope that all of you

  1931. can with confidence

  1932. say, yes, I do.

1933. Jesus is real to me

  1934. and he's working

  1935. obedience in me.

1936. If you have the Spirit,

  1937. are you filled

  1938. with the Spirit?

1939. Do you find in yourself

  1940. any failing

  1941. in this matter?

  1942. I wrote matters,

1943. so I got to one,

  1944. in this matter

  1945. of fruitfulness.

  1946. repentance.

  1947. Repent

  1948. and believe.

  1949. Repent

  1950. and believe

  1951. that you are loved

  1952. by God

  1953. in Christ.

  1954. Confess

  1955. your failing,

  1956. confess

  1957. your sinfulness,

  1958. and believe

  1959. that the promises

  1960. of Scripture

  1961. are true.

  1962. There is therefore

  1963. now no condemnation

  1964. for those

  1965. who are

  1966. in Christ Jesus.

  1967. What a great motivation,

  1968. beloved,

  1969. to pick ourselves up

  1970. when we have failed

  1971. and to press on

  1972. into holiness.

  1973. Third question,

  1974. why are you not

  1975. filled with the Spirit?

  1976. Why are you not

  1977. filled with the Spirit?

  1978. Same question,

  1979. stated a different way,

  1980. a little more priming.

1981. Does the Word of Christ

  1982. dwell in you richly?

1983. Does the Word of Christ

  1984. dwell in you richly?

  1985. If not,

  1986. if you're not

  1987. picking up the Bible

  1988. in a way

1989. that you're taking it up

  1990. inside yourself

  1991. and that it dwells

  1992. within you,

  1993. what do you value

  1994. over Jesus Christ

  1995. and the Word

  1996. that testifies

  1997. of Him?

  1998. What do you

  1999. treasure more

  2000. than Jesus

  2001. and this book

  2002. that tells us

  2003. about Him?

  2004. We see the face

  2005. of Christ

  2006. in the Scripture,

  2007. and there's a slew,

  2008. many, many things

  2009. that could fall

  2010. into this category

2011. and you would do well

  2012. to search your heart

  2013. and ask God

  2014. to expose those things

  2015. that you place

  2016. in higher importance

  2017. than Jesus

  2018. and His Word.

  2019. Let's pray together.
