  1. Thank you, Wes and company, for teaching us new old songs and for leading us consistently with old songs.

  2. ! Interestingly, there's this distinguishing factor between old songs and new songs and new songs have words in them.

  3. ! But there are some good writers in them.

  4. We sang a song this morning by a friend named Matt Papa.

  5. That is a good new song that sounds like an old song because it's rich and deep.

  6. Thank you guys for all the work you do in that.

  7. Acts chapter 14. Last week we began a study of chapter 14 of Luke's second volume.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  8. His first volume is the Gospel according to Luke.

  9. Are you familiar with that, I believe?

  10. This is his second volume of work.

  11. It's most commonly referred to as the Acts of the Apostles.

  12. We so often just call it Acts, but your Bible probably says in the front, the Acts of the Apostles.

  13. And I don't think that's entirely wrong, but I do think it would be more aptly called the Acts of the Risen Jesus Christ.

  14. Luke's first account is the Acts, the Acts of the Risen Jesus Christ.

  15. When Jesus ascended, he sent the promised Holy Spirit that abides in all of those who call on his name.

  16. And he acts by the agency of that Spirit in the lives of his followers.

  17. So as we observe the Apostles, first Peter as the primary character, now Paul as the primary character.

  18. We see Jesus Christ himself working in and through the lives of his people.

  19. Throughout the book of Acts, we see the repetition of the phrases full of the Holy Spirit and filled with the Holy Spirit throughout Luke's record.

  20. And at the very end of chapter 13 in verse 52, you'll note it says,

  21. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

  22. I think that Luke intends for this to be a bridge for us from the activity in chapter 13 into the activity in chapter 14.

  23. And I asserted the following to you last week, if you were here, of course.

  24. Folks, the primary role of the Spirit of God is the exaltation of Jesus Christ in the salvation and perfection of his church.

  25. I'll repeat that for you.

  26. The primary role of the Spirit of God is the exaltation of Jesus Christ.

  27. It's not the Spirit doesn't glorify himself.

  28. The Spirit glorifies Jesus Christ.

  29. The exaltation of Jesus Christ in the salvation and perfection of his church.

  30. and the primary means that he uses to accomplish this,

  31. so the Spirit is working for the exaltation of Jesus Christ

  32. and the salvation and perfection of his people,

  33. the primary means he uses to accomplish this

  34. is the word of God believed and spoken by the people of God.

  35. For the sake of time this morning,

  36. I will not be able to reestablish my proof for that statement.

  37. We spent most of last Sunday doing that.

  38. But I do not want you just to take my word for it.

  39. Please ever take anybody's word for something.

  40. Such a vast, massive statement such as

  41. the primary role of the Spirit of God is the exaltation of Jesus Christ

  42. and the salvation and perfection of his church.

  43. And the primary means that he uses to accomplish this

  44. is the word of God believed and spoken by the people of God.

  45. It's essentially a summary statement of the person

  46. and the work of the Spirit of God

  47. don't just take my word for it.

  48. Study the Scripture.

  49. Go back on our church's website and listen to last week's sermon

  50. when I make the case for that from the Bible itself.

  51. I really believe this will serve you well.

  52. If you're a follower of Jesus Christ,

  53. you need to give careful consideration

  54. to what it means to be filled by the Spirit.

  55. There's much teaching out there about what that means.

  56. There's much erroneous teaching.

  57. There's much contradictory teaching

  58. about what it means to be filled with the Spirit.

  59. If we are followers of Jesus Christ,

  60. he's been given to us as a gift.

  61. And so we need to understand what that means.

  62. Do not neglect the third person of the Trinity

  63. as a worshiper of God,

  64. nor the empowerment that the Spirit of God brings.

  65. Your life will be more fulfilled,

  66. will be more set on purpose

  67. if you'll understand the empowerment

  68. that the Holy Spirit brings.

  69. Our text today and into next Sunday as well

  70. serves this end

  71. by giving us a picture

  72. of what it looks like

  73. to be filled with the Spirit.

  74. So these activities that Paul and Barnabas are about,

  75. the things that we can observe from this text,

  76. are the result of

  77. them being filled by the Spirit.

  78. So what does it look like

  79. to be filled with Spirit?

  80. It's not exhaustive,

  81. but it gives us some clues.

  82. It gives us some filters

  83. to run our own life through

  84. and to understand better

  85. what it means

  86. to be filled with the Spirit.

  87. So,

  88. I'm going to read all of Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  89. This is our text.

  90. Last week,

  91. this week,

  92. next week I believe we'll finish it.

  93. So follow along with me.

  94. Acts chapter 14,

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  95. beginning in verse 1.

  96. Now at Iconium,

  97. they entered together

  98. into the Jewish synagogue

  99. and spoke in such a way

  100. that a great number

  101. of both Jews and Greeks believed.

  102. But the unbelieving Jews

  103. stirred up the Gentiles

  104. and poisoned their minds

  105. against the brothers.

  106. So they remained for a long time,

  107. speaking boldly for the Lord,

  108. who bore witness

  109. to the word of His grace,

  110. granting signs and wonders

  111. to be done by their hands.

  112. But the people of the city

  113. were divided.

  114. Some sided with the Jews

  115. and some with the apostles.

  116. When an attempt was made

  117. by both Gentiles and Jews

  118. with their rulers

  119. to mistreat them

  120. and to stone them,

  121. they learned of it

  122. and fled to Lystra and Derbe,

  123. cities of Lyakonoa,

  124. excuse me,

  125. Lithuania,

  126. and to the surrounding country.

  127. And there they continued

  128. to preach the gospel.

  129. Now at Lystra,

  130. there was a man sitting

  131. who could not use his feet.

  132. He was crippled from birth

  133. and had never walked.

  134. He listened to Paul speaking

  135. and Paul,

  136. looking intently at him

  137. and seeing that he had faith

  138. to be made well,

  139. said in a loud voice,

  140. stand upright on your feet.

  141. And he sprang up

  142. and began walking.

  143. And when the crowd saw

  144. what Paul had done,

  145. they lifted up their voices,

  146. saying in Lithuanian,

  147. the gods have come down to us

  148. in the likeness of men.

  149. Barnabas they called Zeus

  150. and Paul Hermes

  151. because he was the chief speaker.

  152. And the priest of Zeus,

  153. whose temple was at the entrance

  154. to the city,

  155. brought oxen and garlands

  156. to the gates

  157. and wanted to offer sacrifice

  158. with the crowds.

  159. But when the apostles,

  160. Barnabas and Paul,

  161. heard of it,

  162. they tore their garments

  163. and rushed out into the crowd,

  164. crying out,

  165. men,

  166. why are you doing these things?

  167. We also are men

  168. of like nature with you

  169. and we bring you good news

  170. that you should turn

  171. from these vain things

  172. to a living God

  173. who made the heaven

  174. and the earth

  175. and the sea

  176. and all that is in them.

  177. In past generations,

  178. he allowed all the nations

  179. to walk in their own ways.

  180. Yet he did not leave himself

  181. without witness,

  182. for he did good

  183. by giving you rains from heaven

  184. and fruitful seasons,

  185. satisfying your hearts

  186. with food and gladness.

  187. Even with these words,

  188. they scarcely restrained

  189. the people

  190. from offering sacrifice

  191. to them.

  192. But Jews came from Antioch

  193. and Iconium

  194. and having persuaded

  195. the crowds,

  196. they stoned Paul

  197. and dragged him out

  198. of the city,

  199. supposing that he was dead.

  200. But when the disciples

  201. gathered about him,

  202. he rose up

  203. and entered the city

  204. and on the next day

  205. he went on with Barnabas

  206. to Derbe.

  207. When they had preached

  208. the gospel to that city

  209. and had made many disciples,

  210. they returned to Lystra

  211. and to Iconium

  212. and to Antioch,

  213. strengthening the souls

  214. of the disciples,

  215. encouraging them

  216. to continue in the faith

  217. and saying that

  218. through many tribulations

  219. we must enter

  220. the kingdom of God.

  221. When they had appointed

  222. elders for them

  223. in every church

  224. with prayer and fasting,

  225. they committed them

  226. to the Lord

  227. in whom they had believed.

  228. Then they passed

  229. through Pisidia

  230. and came to Pamphylia.

  231. When they had spoken

  232. the word in Perga,

  233. they went down to Italia

  234. and from there

  235. they sailed to Antioch

  236. where they had been

  237. committed to the grace

  238. of God

  239. for the work

  240. that they had fulfilled.

  241. And when they arrived,

  242. they gathered

  243. the church together.

  244. They declared

  245. all that God

  246. had done with them

  247. and how he had opened

  248. a door of faith

  249. to the Gentiles

  250. and they remained

  251. no little time

  252. with the disciples.

  253. Beloved,

  254. this is God's word

  255. to us.

  256. It was written

  257. for his glory

  258. and our good

  259. and we would all

  260. do well

  261. to listen to it

  262. in order to believe

  263. its promises

  264. and obey its commands.

  265. Now,

  266. the structure

  267. for our study

  268. of Acts chapter 14,

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  269. I wrote around

  270. seven points.

  271. I'm going to give

  272. those to you

  273. but we will repeat them

  274. so please don't

  275. be in a panic

  276. if you're a note taker.

  277. The person who is

  278. filled with the Spirit,

  279. number one,

  280. is fruitful.

  281. Number two,

  282. is opposed.

  283. Number three,

  284. speaks boldly.

  285. Number four,

  286. acts humbly.

  287. Number five,

  288. develops disciples.

  289. Number six,

  290. is committed.

  291. And number seven,

  292. loves fellowship.

  293. Now,

  294. last week,

  295. we managed to make it

  296. through the first point.

  297. I had intended to get

  298. through the first four.

  299. We made it through

  300. the first one

  301. and that is

  302. that the person

  303. who is filled

  304. with the Spirit

  305. is fruitful

  306. and by that,

  307. I mean

  308. that the person

  309. who is filled

  310. with the Spirit

  311. is multiplied,

  312. is a multiplier

  313. of disciples

  314. of Jesus Christ

  315. as they proclaim

  316. the gospel

  317. of Jesus Christ.

  318. I mean it in the

  319. Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4:20

  320. verse 20 sense

  321. in the good soil sense.

  322. Those who are of

  323. good soil

  324. bear much fruit.

  325. So,

  326. they're reproducing

  327. the person

  328. who is filled

  329. with the Holy Spirit.

  330. And again,

  331. I would encourage you

  332. to go back

  333. and listen

  334. to that sermon.

  335. Today,

  336. I'm going to work

  337. to present

  338. the next three points

  339. and then we'll finish

  340. next Sunday

  341. with point five,

  342. six,

  343. and seven.

  344. This morning,

  345. it's quite possible

  346. that I'm going to

  347. present these three points

  348. to you

  349. with a great amount

  350. of brevity.

  351. We'll see.

  352. Of course,

  353. as we always do,

  354. on Monday

  355. of this week,

  356. I was playing

  357. with my boys

  358. in a tree,

  359. which is just a thing

  360. you shouldn't do

  361. when you're about

  362. to turn 37.

  363. And I took a short

  364. but very hard fall

  365. out of said tree

  366. and I'm pretty sure

  367. I cracked two ribs.

  368. So,

  369. it's been a very painful week.

  370. You may note me already

  371. getting short of breath.

  372. It's because I'm trying

  373. to breathe and talk

  374. at the same time

  375. and it's a little hard

  376. right now to do that.

  377. A community group

  378. on Tuesday,

  379. I set my coffee down

  380. to my right

  381. and I was trying

  382. to reach for it

  383. and I couldn't quite

  384. reach for it.

  385. And we're talking

  386. and I'm trying to reach

  387. for my coffee

  388. and I tried to cross over

  389. with my other arm

  390. and I couldn't quite get it

  391. and pretty soon

  392. I noticed that everybody

  393. was kind of chuckling

  394. at me

  395. and we had stopped talking

  396. and Phil,

  397. bless him,

  398. was sitting close by

  399. and said,

  400. do you want me

  401. to get your coffee

  402. for you?

  403. Yes, please.

  404. I'm feeling much better

  405. this morning

  406. but my head,

  407. to be entirely honest,

  408. has not been in

  409. points two,

  410. three,

  411. and four

  412. of this text

  413. very much

  414. this week.

  415. Praise the Lord

  416. and His providence.

  417. Last week,

  418. I prepared to preach

  419. through point four,

  420. only made it

  421. through point one

  422. and then fell out

  423. of a tree.

  424. So here I am

  425. with my notes

  426. essentially from last week.

  427. And so we'll get into this

  428. and just see how the Lord

  429. blesses our time together.

  430. I pray that He will.

  431. So,

  432. our first point for today,

  433. point number two,

  434. the person who is filled

  435. with the Spirit

  436. is opposed.

  437. If you've been with us

  438. during our study of Acts,

  439. this should be no surprise

  440. to you.

  441. The gospel of Jesus Christ

  442. has been

  443. and will be

  444. accepted by many

  445. and has been

  446. and will be

  447. rejected by many.

  448. And that rejection

  449. takes many forms.

  450. It often takes the form

  451. of direct opposition.

  452. Beloved,

  453. we should never forget

  454. that our Lord

  455. was crucified.

  456. God,

  457. the one whom we say

  458. we follow,

  459. who sets an example

  460. for us

  461. in all of the ways

  462. that we're meant

  463. to conduct our lives,

  464. Himself

  465. was persecuted.

  466. He was opposed

  467. to the point

  468. of death.

  469. Jesus said in

  470. John chapter 15,

    John 15:20

  471. verse 20,

  472. Remember the word

  473. that I have said

  474. to you,

  475. a servant

  476. is not greater

  477. than his master.

  478. If they persecute me,

  479. they will also

  480. persecute you.

  481. If they kept my word,

  482. they will also

  483. keep yours.

  484. And we have witnessed

  485. this reality

  486. in the book

  487. of Acts.

  488. Jesus is now

  489. ascended.

  490. He has sent

  491. the Holy Spirit.

  492. He's extended Himself

  493. into the people

  494. of God.

  495. And we have observed

  496. together

  497. this opposition

  498. to the gospel

  499. of Christ.

  500. Many accepting,

  501. many following Jesus,

  502. many rejecting.

  503. Chapter 4 of Acts,

  504. Peter and John

  505. are arrested

  506. for preaching

  507. in the temple.

  508. Remember,

  509. they stand trial

  510. in front of the Sanhedrin.

  511. In chapter 6,

  512. Stephen,

  513. a deacon of the church,

  514. is arrested

  515. for contending

  516. for the faith

  517. with proselytes

  518. from the synagogues

  519. in Jerusalem.

  520. In chapter 7,

  521. Stephen is the

  522. first Christian martyr.

  523. In chapter 8,

  524. a great persecution

  525. begins.

  526. You may remember

  527. that it's Paul,

  528. then called Saul,

  529. who leads that charge.

  530. And the church

  531. in Jerusalem

  532. is scattered abroad.

  533. God flings open

  534. the gate

  535. for the gospel

  536. to go forth

  537. to the nations

  538. of the world.

  539. In chapter 12,

  540. James is martyred

  541. and Peter is imprisoned.

  542. Once again,

  543. miraculously released.

  544. chapter 13,

  545. Paul and Barnabas

  546. are opposed

  547. by a false prophet

  548. named Elimus

  549. on the island of Cyprus.

  550. And at Antioch

  551. in Pisidia,

  552. Paul and Barnabas

  553. are driven

  554. out of the district.

  555. You can see that

  556. in chapter 13,

  557. verse 50.

  558. They're driven

  559. out of the district

  560. and then we see

  561. that the disciples

  562. were filled with joy

  563. and with the Holy Spirit.

  564. And so,

  565. we find ourselves

  566. in chapter 14

  567. in the city of Iconium.

  568. Unbelieving Jews,

  569. verse 2,

  570. stirring up the Gentiles

  571. and poisoning their minds

  572. or it could be translated

  573. embittering their minds

  574. against the brothers,

  575. setting them against them.

  576. And then in verse 4,

  577. we see of chapter 14

  578. that the people are divided,

  579. some siding with the Jews

  580. and some with the apostles,

  581. some rejecting

  582. and some accepting

  583. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  584. And then in verse 5,

  585. we see that there's

  586. an attempt made

  587. to stone them,

  588. to take them out

  589. and to throw rocks at them

  590. until they die.

  591. And we see the prudence,

  592. not the cowardice,

  593. but the prudence

  594. of Paul and Barnabas

  595. as they flee

  596. to Lystra and Derbe,

  597. the city of Lithuania

  598. and to the surrounding country.

  599. Right?

  600. So opposition.

  601. Right?

  602. They're met with opposition.

  603. Acceptance,

  604. but also opposition

  605. as they preach

  606. the good news of Jesus.

  607. And then in Lystra,

  608. so they go out from there.

  609. Verse 19 you see,

  610. but Jews from Antioch

  611. and Iconium

  612. have followed him now

  613. and they've persuaded

  614. the crowds

  615. and they go through

  616. with this act

  617. of stoning Paul

  618. and they drag him

  619. out of the city

  620. supposing that he was dead.

  621. Now,

  622. I don't want to spend

  623. any time

  624. except for this little bit

  625. that I'm going to.

  626. Some would suggest

  627. that Paul was in fact dead

  628. and that he was raised

  629. from the dead.

  630. I don't think so,

  631. but that's okay if you do.

  632. I think that he was

  633. so beaten down,

  634. so stoned

  635. to the point of death

  636. that he seemed dead

  637. and that then God

  638. gives him the strength

  639. to get back up

  640. in verse 20 we see.

  641. So he's stoned here.

  642. Great opposition,

  643. a persecution

  644. against the gospel

  645. of Jesus Christ.

  646. After being stoned,

  647. the disciples come around.

  648. He gets up.

  649. What do they go do?

  650. Immediately they go off

  651. to Derbe

  652. to preach the gospel.

  653. Verse 21,

  654. they preach the gospel

  655. in that city,

  656. being Derbe,

  657. and made many disciples.

  658. What do they do?

  659. They return.

  660. This is fascinating to me.

  661. They return to Lystra

  662. and to Iconium

  663. and to Antioch,

  664. the places where

  665. all of these things

  666. had happened.

  667. And they strengthen

  668. the souls of the disciples,

  669. encouraging them

  670. to continue in the faith

  671. and saying,

  672. the primary way

  673. in which they're

  674. encouraging them

  675. to continue in the faith,

  676. strengthening their souls,

  677. that through many

  678. tribulations

  679. we must enter

  680. the kingdom of God.

  681. This is the way

  682. they're saying

  683. into the kingdom of God,

  684. to be hated

  685. like our Savior.

  686. Many will accept

  687. but many will reject.

  688. Paul writes later

  689. in his pastoral epistle

  690. to Timothy,

  691. a young pastor,

  692. 2 Timothy 3,

    2 Timothy 3:12

  693. verse 12,

  694. Indeed,

  695. all who desire

  696. to live a godly life

  697. in Christ Jesus

  698. will be persecuted.

  699. Our religious freedom

  700. will spare us

  701. some types of persecution.

  702. American Christian,

  703. this is true.

  704. Some types of persecution.

  705. Praise God for that.

  706. I am thankful

  707. for our religious freedom.

  708. I am thankful

  709. for the way

  710. in which we're allowed

  711. to gather this morning.

  712. This is not

  713. 5.30 a.m.

  714. underground,

  715. in the dark,

  716. sneaking in, right?

  717. That's a good thing.

  718. It's a blessed thing

  719. that we're able to do this.

  720. Our religious freedom

  721. will spare us

  722. from some types

  723. of persecution.

  724. But our religious freedom

  725. does not stay

  726. the promises of God.

  727. Those who desire

  728. to live godly

  729. in Christ Jesus

  730. will be persecuted.

  731. If we are filled

  732. with the Spirit,

  733. if we're seeking

  734. out opportunities

  735. to share the gospel

  736. of Jesus Christ,

  737. and we are in fact

  738. sharing the gospel

  739. of Jesus Christ,

  740. some will accept it

  741. and some will reject it.

  742. And that rejection

  743. will take the form

  744. of opposition.

  745. Why will the gospel

  746. be opposed by some?

  747. Why will it be opposed

  748. by some?

  749. The very hardness

  750. of their own hearts.

  751. Some people do not

  752. want to hear

  753. that they are

  754. self-worshippers,

  755. that they are

  756. enemies of God,

  757. that they have turned

  758. from Him

  759. and in every way

  760. said they hate Him.

  761. They don't want

  762. to hear it, right?

  763. Your preaching

  764. brings condemnation

  765. on them

  766. and they do not

  767. want to hear it.

  768. They do not want

  769. to give things up

  770. for the sake

  771. of following Jesus.

  772. They are very happy

  773. with the way

  774. their life is going.

  775. To forsake

  776. their own being

  777. for the sake

  778. of following Christ.

  779. They don't want

  780. to hear that message.

  781. Paul writes

  782. in 2 Corinthians 2,

    2 Corinthians 2:14–16

  783. verses 14-16,

  784. But thanks be to God

  785. who in Christ

  786. always leads us

  787. in triumphal procession

  788. and through us

  789. spreads the fragrance

  790. of the knowledge

  791. of Him everywhere.

  792. I think that's

  793. a wonderful metaphor.

  794. The fragrance

  795. of the knowledge

  796. of Him

  797. everywhere.

  798. Verse 15,

  799. For we are the aroma

  800. of Christ

  801. to God

  802. among those

  803. who are being saved

  804. and among those

  805. who are perishing.

  806. We are ambassadors

  807. for Christ.

  808. And Paul's using

  809. this metaphor

  810. of spreading

  811. fragrance of knowledge

  812. being the aroma

  813. of Christ

  814. both to those

  815. who are being saved

  816. and to those

  817. who are perishing.

  818. We're presenting

  819. Jesus Christ

  820. to those

  821. who believe

  822. in Him

  823. and Jesus Christ

  824. to those

  825. who will reject Him.

  826. Verse 16,

  827. To one,

  828. a fragrance

  829. from death

  830. to death.

  831. Those who would

  832. reject the message

  833. of Jesus Christ.

  834. Dead people

  835. not accepting

  836. the message

  837. of Jesus Christ

  838. remaining dead

  839. people.

  840. To the other,

  841. a fragrance

  842. from life

  843. to life.

  844. And then Paul

  845. asked the question,

  846. Who is sufficient

  847. for these things?

  848. Surely we are not.

  849. We must be

  850. filled with the Spirit

  851. to present

  852. such a message.

  853. So the person

  854. who is filled

  855. with the Spirit

  856. is opposed,

  857. will meet

  858. opposition

  859. even as they're

  860. being fruitful.

  861. Thirdly,

  862. the person

  863. who is filled

  864. with the Spirit

  865. is bold.

  866. in the face

  867. of opposition,

  868. knowing full well

  869. that we will

  870. either meet it

  871. or we have

  872. already met.

  873. Opposition

  874. to the Gospel

  875. of Jesus Christ.

  876. The person

  877. who is filled

  878. with the Spirit

  879. is bold.

  880. I am

  881. in awe

  882. of the boldness

  883. of the early

  884. apostles.

  885. We just try

  886. to put ourselves

  887. in their shoes

  888. and walk

  889. through the situations

  890. that they're walking

  891. through.

  892. I fear

  893. that very few

  894. of us

  895. would have

  896. responded

  897. in the same

  898. way

  899. that they do

  900. in our text

  901. today.

  902. Man,

  903. I would like

  904. to say,

  905. oh,

  906. me too.

  907. I would have

  908. done the exact

  909. same thing.

  910. My suggestion

  911. is that if I'm

  912. filled with the Spirit,

  913. I would.

  914. If I have the Word

  915. of God

  916. richly dwelling

  917. in me,

  918. if my eyes

  919. are set

  920. on heavenly

  921. things,

  922. if I'm looking

  923. and living

  924. to eternity

  925. and I'm not

  926. concerned

  927. about the here

  928. and now

  929. that I would

  930. do this,

  931. so often,

  932. so often,

  933. I fear,

  934. I would have

  935. tucked tail

  936. and run.

  937. It's because

  938. of opposition

  939. in verse 3.

  940. They remained

  941. for a long

  942. time.

  943. Notice that.

  944. Verse 2,

  945. the unbelieving

  946. Jews stirred up

  947. the Gentiles

  948. and poisoned

  949. their minds

  950. against the apostles.

  951. And so,

  952. what's said

  953. in verse 3?

  954. So,

  955. they remained

  956. for a long

  957. time.

  958. In direct

  959. response

  960. to the

  961. unbelievers

  962. stirring up

  963. people,

  964. trying to

  965. change their

  966. minds and

  967. bitter them

  968. towards the

  969. gospel of

  970. Jesus Christ,

  971. Paul and

  972. Barnabas

  973. stay.

  974. And verse 3

  975. says,

  976. they spoke

  977. boldly

  978. for the Lord

  979. and the Lord

  980. bears witness

  981. to the word

  982. of His grace,

  983. granting signs

  984. and wonders

  985. to be done

  986. by their hands.

  987. They remain

  988. on in a

  989. hostile environment

  990. for the sake

  991. of the church

  992. of Jesus Christ.

  993. Then,

  994. because of

  995. further

  996. opposition,

  997. verse 7,

  998. so we know

  999. there's some

  1000. further opposition,

  1001. there's a plan

  1002. now to stone

  1003. them.

  1004. They learn

  1005. of this plan,

  1006. verse 5,

  1007. to mistreat

  1008. them and

  1009. to stone

  1010. them.

  1011. They learn

  1012. of it and

  1013. they flee.

  1014. Out of prudence

  1015. again,

  1016. not out of

  1017. cowardice.

  1018. It's time

  1019. to move on.

  1020. It's time

  1021. to go

  1022. to another

  1023. place.

  1024. A quick

  1025. side story

  1026. about one

  1027. of my

  1028. favorite

  1029. missionaries,

  1030. a guy

  1031. named

  1032. John G.

  1033. Patton,

  1034. was from

  1035. Scotland,

  1036. went to

  1037. a place,

  1038. in his

  1039. day was

  1040. called

  1041. the New

  1042. Hebrides,

  1043. a little

  1044. group of

  1045. islands

  1046. in the

  1047. South

  1048. Pacific.

  1049. It's

  1050. now called

  1051. Vanuatu.

  1052. So if you

  1053. have any

  1054. interest in

  1055. this,

  1056. look for

  1057. Vanuatu.

  1058. He went

  1059. to the

  1060. New

  1061. Hebrides

  1062. and the

  1063. people in

  1064. the New

  1065. Hebrides,

  1066. now Vanuatu,

  1067. were cannibals.

  1068. So he's

  1069. given all

  1070. this warning,

  1071. this wonderful

  1072. quote I've

  1073. read to you

  1074. some years

  1075. past,

  1076. an elder

  1077. of his

  1078. church,

  1079. trying to

  1080. convince him

  1081. not to

  1082. go,

  1083. because he'll

  1084. be eaten

  1085. by cannibals,

  1086. and he

  1087. says back

  1088. to him,

  1089. well someday

  1090. you'll be

  1091. eaten by

  1092. worms,

  1093. whether I'm

  1094. eaten by

  1095. cannibals or

  1096. you by

  1097. worms,

  1098. we'll both

  1099. find our

  1100. bodies in

  1101. the same

  1102. state.

  1103. Wonderful

  1104. quote.

  1105. He goes

  1106. to this

  1107. place,

  1108. loses his

  1109. wife and

  1110. his newborn

  1111. son to

  1112. disease,

  1113. I think it's

  1114. malaria,

  1115. early years

  1116. that he's

  1117. there.

  1118. He's on

  1119. this little

  1120. island,

  1121. has one

  1122. convert,

  1123. the man

  1124. who's

  1125. this

  1126. convert

  1127. will stand

  1128. over him

  1129. and protect

  1130. him with

  1131. a musket

  1132. while he's

  1133. studying,

  1134. so that as

  1135. these cannibals

  1136. come and try

  1137. to attack

  1138. him,

  1139. he's given

  1140. some warning,

  1141. shots go off

  1142. into the

  1143. jungle and

  1144. they run

  1145. back away.

  1146. There's

  1147. accounts of

  1148. him wrestling

  1149. with the

  1150. chief,

  1151. physically

  1152. wrestling with

  1153. the chief

  1154. of these

  1155. people and

  1156. lecturing him

  1157. for how

  1158. evil he is

  1159. for trying

  1160. to come

  1161. and eat

  1162. him.

  1163. And this

  1164. time on

  1165. this island

  1166. finally comes

  1167. to a head

  1168. where essentially

  1169. all the tribes

  1170. of this island

  1171. have decided,

  1172. they have decided,

  1173. they're going

  1174. to kill

  1175. and eat

  1176. John G.

  1177. Patton,

  1178. and he manages

  1179. to flee off

  1180. the island.

  1181. He manages

  1182. to get

  1183. passage from

  1184. a ship

  1185. off of the

  1186. island,

  1187. and he goes

  1188. home,

  1189. and at home

  1190. he is

  1191. chastised

  1192. for being

  1193. a coward.

  1194. This man

  1195. goes to

  1196. this place,

  1197. gives of his

  1198. life to go

  1199. to this place,

  1200. loses his

  1201. family in

  1202. this place,

  1203. and I would

  1204. suggest,

  1205. out of an

  1206. act of

  1207. prudence,

  1208. leaves the

  1209. island,

  1210. goes back

  1211. home where

  1212. he goes

  1213. and recruits

  1214. and then

  1215. goes back

  1216. to Vanuatu,

  1217. the New

  1218. Hebrides,

  1219. and he's

  1220. said,

  1221. you should

  1222. have stayed

  1223. and been

  1224. a martyr

  1225. for the

  1226. cause.

  1227. It wasn't

  1228. cowardice that

  1229. caused him

  1230. to run,

  1231. it's certainly

  1232. not cowardice

  1233. that causes

  1234. them to run

  1235. here,

  1236. but rather

  1237. prudence,

  1238. because what

  1239. do they go

  1240. do?

  1241. Verse 7,

  1242. John G.

  1243. Patton goes

  1244. home,

  1245. recruits

  1246. missionaries,

  1247. goes back.

  1248. What do they

  1249. do?

  1250. They continue

  1251. to preach

  1252. the gospel.

  1253. They don't

  1254. cease preaching

  1255. the gospel

  1256. because of a

  1257. threat against

  1258. them,

  1259. they continue,

  1260. they just

  1261. go to another

  1262. place,

  1263. and they

  1264. continue to

  1265. preach the

  1266. gospel.

  1267. We've seen

  1268. this boldness

  1269. other place

  1270. in the book

  1271. of Acts.

  1272. Peter and

  1273. John,

  1274. before the

  1275. Sanhedrin,

  1276. in chapter

  1277. 4,

  1278. I mentioned

  1279. to you

  1280. earlier,

  1281. they're

  1282. charged not

  1283. to speak

  1284. or teach

  1285. in the name

  1286. of Jesus.

  1287. Now,

  1288. the Sanhedrin

  1289. was the

  1290. high Jewish

  1291. court,

  1292. right?

  1293. This would

  1294. have been

  1295. a big

  1296. deal.

  1297. 71 men,

  1298. it's a big

  1299. deal that

  1300. you're standing

  1301. in front

  1302. of this

  1303. group.

  1304. They're

  1305. charged not

  1306. to speak

  1307. or teach

  1308. the name

  1309. of Jesus

  1310. in Acts

    Acts 4:19

  1311. 4,

  1312. verse 19

  1313. and 20,

  1314. but Peter

  1315. and John

  1316. answered

  1317. them,

  1318. whether it

  1319. is right

  1320. in the sight

  1321. of God

  1322. to listen

  1323. to you

  1324. rather than

  1325. to God,

  1326. you must

  1327. judge,

  1328. for we

  1329. cannot but

  1330. speak of

  1331. what we

  1332. have seen

  1333. and heard.

  1334. What boldness

  1335. when they

  1336. are released

  1337. and they

  1338. rejoin their

  1339. fellow disciples

  1340. later in

  1341. chapter 4,

  1342. they pray

  1343. together.

  1344. And they

  1345. do not

  1346. pray that

  1347. the opposition

  1348. will stop.

  1349. Why?

  1350. Because they

  1351. know that

  1352. this is the

  1353. way that

  1354. the kingdom

  1355. of God

  1356. is coming.

  1357. Because they're

  1358. aware that

  1359. the promises

  1360. that Jesus

  1361. made to

  1362. them,

  1363. that they're

  1364. not greater

  1365. than the

  1366. Master.

  1367. They know

  1368. full well

  1369. that the

  1370. world hated

  1371. him and

  1372. therefore the

  1373. world would

  1374. hate them

  1375. as well.

  1376. They don't

  1377. pray that

  1378. the opposition

  1379. will stop.

  1380. What do

  1381. they pray

  1382. for?

  1383. Further

  1384. boldness.

  1385. Further

  1386. boldness

  1387. in the light

  1388. of opposition

  1389. that we

  1390. would be

  1391. more

  1392. bold.

  1393. And they

  1394. granted it

  1395. and they

  1396. speak the

  1397. gospel at

  1398. the end

  1399. of chapter

  1400. 4 with

  1401. even greater

  1402. boldness.

  1403. Look at

  1404. verse 20

  1405. in chapter

  1406. 14 of

  1407. Acts.

  1408. because of

  1409. more

  1410. opposition.

  1411. Because of

  1412. more

  1413. opposition.

  1414. Paul,

  1415. Barnabas,

  1416. Paul's

  1417. stoned,

  1418. rises up,

  1419. goes to

  1420. the city

  1421. of Derbe.

  1422. When they

  1423. preached the

  1424. gospel of

  1425. that city,

  1426. made many

  1427. disciples,

  1428. they return.

  1429. And this

  1430. just astounds

  1431. me.

  1432. They return

  1433. to Lystra,

  1434. to Iconium,

  1435. and Antioch.

  1436. These are

  1437. the three

  1438. cities they

  1439. had just

  1440. been in.

  1441. And these

  1442. are the

  1443. people from

  1444. these cities

  1445. that had

  1446. stoned Paul.

  1447. They presumed

  1448. to death.

  1449. And they

  1450. went back

  1451. in great

  1452. boldness,

  1453. strengthening

  1454. the soul

  1455. of the

  1456. disciple,

  1457. encouraging

  1458. them to

  1459. continue

  1460. the faith,

  1461. and saying

  1462. that through

  1463. many

  1464. tribulations

  1465. we must

  1466. enter the

  1467. kingdom of

  1468. God.

  1469. What gives

  1470. the people

  1471. of God

  1472. such

  1473. boldness

  1474. in the

  1475. face of

  1476. such

  1477. opposition?

  1478. This is

  1479. no light

  1480. thing.

  1481. This is

  1482. not your

  1483. friends in

  1484. your psychology

  1485. class making

  1486. fun of you

  1487. for being a

  1488. follower of

  1489. Jesus.

  1490. And you

  1491. know you

  1492. got to go

  1493. back on

  1494. Thursday after

  1495. that hard

  1496. Tuesday class

  1497. where they

  1498. thought you

  1499. were a

  1500. weirdo for

  1501. believing the

  1502. truth of

  1503. the Bible.

  1504. This is

  1505. hard opposition.

  1506. Pursued,

  1507. stoned to

  1508. death,

  1509. presumably,

  1510. dragged outside

  1511. and left

  1512. for dead.

  1513. He goes

  1514. back to the

  1515. same places.

  1516. What gives

  1517. boldness?

  1518. Men,

  1519. such

  1520. boldness.

  1521. If you've

  1522. got the

  1523. theme in

  1524. your head,

  1525. they're

  1526. filled with

  1527. the Spirit.

  1528. They're

  1529. filled with

  1530. the Spirit.

  1531. What does

  1532. it mean to

  1533. be filled

  1534. with the

  1535. Spirit?

  1536. What is

  1537. it producing

  1538. in us?

  1539. How is

  1540. it?

  1541. Is this a

  1542. magical feeling

  1543. they have that

  1544. they're going

  1545. to go back

  1546. into these

  1547. places?

  1548. Say to

  1549. you,

  1550. no,

  1551. it's not.

  1552. It's that

  1553. the Word of

  1554. Christ dwells

  1555. in them

  1556. richly.

  1557. The Spirit

  1558. of God

  1559. is using

  1560. the truth

  1561. of God

  1562. to compel

  1563. them to

  1564. go back

  1565. to these

  1566. places.

  1567. Truths

  1568. like this.

  1569. January 1st

  1570. this year,

  1571. this was at

  1572. least part of

  1573. the text

  1574. that I preached

  1575. on.

  1576. Truths

  1577. like this,

  1578. Paul writes

  1579. Romans 8

  1580. 35-39,

  1581. Who shall

  1582. separate us

  1583. from the

  1584. love of

  1585. Christ?

  1586. Shall

  1587. tribulation

  1588. or distress

  1589. or persecution

  1590. or famine

  1591. or nakedness

  1592. or danger

  1593. or sword?

  1594. As it is

  1595. written,

  1596. for your

  1597. sake we

  1598. are being

  1599. killed all

  1600. the day

  1601. long.

  1602. We are

  1603. regarded as

  1604. sheep to

  1605. be slaughtered.

  1606. It's these

  1607. types of

  1608. truths,

  1609. right?

  1610. Who can

  1611. separate us

  1612. from the

  1613. love of

  1614. Christ?

  1615. And because

  1616. Christ loves

  1617. us, we

  1618. love what

  1619. Christ loves.

  1620. And he

  1621. loves the

  1622. believers in

  1623. Lystra and

  1624. Iconium and

  1625. Antioch.

  1626. So we're

  1627. going to go

  1628. back and

  1629. we're going

  1630. to strengthen

  1631. them.

  1632. This is

  1633. what's

  1634. compelling

  1635. them to

  1636. go back.

  1637. Verse 37

  1638. of Romans

  1639. 8,

  1640. No, in

  1641. all these

  1642. things we

  1643. are more

  1644. than conquerors

  1645. through him

  1646. who loved

  1647. us.

  1648. For I am

  1649. sure that

  1650. neither death

  1651. nor life

  1652. nor angels

  1653. nor rulers

  1654. nor things

  1655. present nor

  1656. things to

  1657. come nor

  1658. powers nor

  1659. height nor

  1660. depth nor

  1661. anything else

  1662. in all

  1663. creation will

  1664. be able to

  1665. separate us

  1666. from the

  1667. love of

  1668. God in

  1669. Christ Jesus

  1670. our Lord.

  1671. Beloved,

  1672. we need to be

  1673. compelled by

  1674. the truth of

  1675. who God is

  1676. to us in

  1677. Christ to

  1678. great boldness

  1679. in the face

  1680. of opposition.

  1681. So the

  1682. person who

  1683. is filled

  1684. with the

  1685. Spirit

  1686. is bold.

  1687. Fourthly,

  1688. and lastly,

  1689. the person who

  1690. is filled

  1691. with the

  1692. Spirit

  1693. acts

  1694. humbly

  1695. or is

  1696. humble,

  1697. if you

  1698. prefer.

  1699. Apparently I

  1700. do because I

  1701. changed my

  1702. notes halfway

  1703. through.

  1704. The person

  1705. who is filled

  1706. with the

  1707. Spirit

  1708. acts

  1709. humbly

  1710. or is

  1711. humble.

  1712. And there's

  1713. this really

  1714. kind of

  1715. amazing

  1716. account of

  1717. what happens

  1718. in Lystra.

  1719. A different

  1720. thing here

  1721. than happens

  1722. in other

  1723. places where

  1724. the gospel

  1725. is proclaimed.

  1726. They go to

  1727. Lystra and

  1728. they're preaching

  1729. the gospel of

  1730. Jesus Christ

  1731. as they're

  1732. going along

  1733. and they

  1734. encounter a

  1735. man.

  1736. A man who's

  1737. been crippled

  1738. from birth

  1739. the point

  1740. of Luke's

  1741. account is

  1742. that this

  1743. man was

  1744. never able

  1745. to walk.

  1746. It wasn't

  1747. some show

  1748. that they

  1749. put on.

  1750. He genuinely

  1751. was not

  1752. able to

  1753. walk.

  1754. From birth

  1755. he was

  1756. crippled.

  1757. By the

  1758. miraculous

  1759. power of

  1760. God,

  1761. he's raised

  1762. up to

  1763. walk again.

  1764. All of

  1765. this,

  1766. I talked

  1767. about this

  1768. a lot

  1769. last week,

  1770. is done

  1771. to affirm

  1772. the message

  1773. of Jesus

  1774. Christ.

  1775. It's always

  1776. meant to

  1777. exalt

  1778. Jesus Christ,

  1779. miracles of

  1780. this nature.

  1781. But there's

  1782. this peculiar

  1783. response from

  1784. the people

  1785. in Lystra.

  1786. When the

  1787. crowd saw

  1788. what Paul

  1789. had done,

  1790. they lifted

  1791. up their

  1792. voices,

  1793. saying in

  1794. Lithuanian,

  1795. the gods

  1796. have come

  1797. down to

  1798. us in

  1799. the likeness

  1800. of men.

  1801. We see

  1802. that they

  1803. call Barnabas

  1804. Zeus and

  1805. Paul Hermes

  1806. because he

  1807. was the

  1808. chief speaker.

  1809. And the

  1810. priest of

  1811. Zeus,

  1812. whose temple

  1813. was at

  1814. the entrance

  1815. to the

  1816. city,

  1817. this is

  1818. verse 13,

  1819. brought out

  1820. oxen and

  1821. garlands to

  1822. the gates

  1823. and wanted

  1824. to offer

  1825. sacrifice

  1826. with the

  1827. crowds.

  1828. So the

  1829. result of

  1830. Paul's

  1831. healing,

  1832. we must

  1833. understand,

  1834. was rooted

  1835. in a

  1836. local folklore.

  1837. So this

  1838. odd response

  1839. was rooted

  1840. in a

  1841. local folklore.

  1842. For them,

  1843. it wasn't

  1844. odd at all.

  1845. In John

  1846. MacArthur's

  1847. commentary on

  1848. this text,

  1849. he wrote

  1850. this,

  1851. there was

  1852. a tradition

  1853. in Lystra

  1854. that the

  1855. gods,

  1856. Zeus and

  1857. Hermes,

  1858. once came

  1859. to earth

  1860. incognito.

  1861. When they

  1862. arrived at

  1863. Lystra and

  1864. asked for

  1865. food and

  1866. lodging,

  1867. everyone

  1868. refused

  1869. them.

  1870. Finally,

  1871. an old

  1872. peasant named

  1873. Philemon and

  1874. his wife

  1875. Bacchus took

  1876. them in.

  1877. Their

  1878. inhospitable

  1879. neighbors were

  1880. drowned in a

  1881. flood sent by

  1882. the vengeful

  1883. gods.

  1884. Philemon and

  1885. Bacchus,

  1886. however,

  1887. saw their

  1888. humble cottage

  1889. turned into a

  1890. magnificent temple

  1891. where they

  1892. served as

  1893. priests and

  1894. priestess.

  1895. So this is

  1896. the folklore

  1897. of the town.

  1898. And here

  1899. come these

  1900. two men,

  1901. Barnabas and

  1902. Paul,

  1903. performing this

  1904. miracle.

  1905. This man who

  1906. could not walk

  1907. is now able to

  1908. walk.

  1909. And this is

  1910. why they

  1911. responded in

  1912. that way.

  1913. Barnabas likely

  1914. gets to be

  1915. Zeus because

  1916. his stature was

  1917. probably one of

  1918. greater prominence.

  1919. The text tells us

  1920. Paul Hermes because

  1921. Hermes was the

  1922. messenger of the

  1923. gods and he's the

  1924. chief speaker.

  1925. There's some

  1926. extra-biblical

  1927. accounts which

  1928. likely could be

  1929. believed,

  1930. some descriptions

  1931. of Paul.

  1932. Paul was kind

  1933. of an odd,

  1934. short-balled,

  1935. unibrowed man.

  1936. Not a pleasant

  1937. looking man at

  1938. all.

  1939. So Barnabas gets

  1940. the honor of

  1941. Zeus in this

  1942. case.

  1943. Because the

  1944. people were

  1945. speaking

  1946. Likuanian,

  1947. this is important,

  1948. Luke reports

  1949. this for us,

  1950. because of this,

  1951. Paul and

  1952. Barnabas had no

  1953. idea what was

  1954. going on.

  1955. That's why he

  1956. records that for

  1957. us.

  1958. They're not

  1959. sure what's

  1960. happening.

  1961. Why all the

  1962. hubbub about

  1963. this healing?

  1964. Verse 14,

  1965. Luke writes,

  1966. but when the

  1967. apostles Barnabas

  1968. and Paul heard

  1969. of it.

  1970. So now people are

  1971. speaking to them

  1972. in a language that

  1973. they understand.

  1974. They understand

  1975. what's happening.

  1976. They think that

  1977. we're Zeus and

  1978. Hermes.

  1979. They tear their

  1980. garments and they

  1981. rush out into the

  1982. crowd crying out.

  1983. Tearing their

  1984. garments was a

  1985. common sign of

  1986. revulsion at

  1987. blasphemy.

  1988. It's a strong

  1989. sign to tear your

  1990. garments because

  1991. you were so

  1992. betraying the

  1993. name of God.

  1994. So they're

  1995. extremely humble.

  1996. That's the point.

  1997. They're extremely

  1998. humble.

  1999. 1 Peter 5,

  2000. 5 and 6,

  2001. Peter writes,

  2002. close yourselves

  2003. all of you with

  2004. humility toward

  2005. one another.

  2006. For God

  2007. opposes the

  2008. proud,

  2009. but gives

  2010. grace to the

  2011. humble.

  2012. Humble yourselves

  2013. therefore into the

  2014. mighty hands of

  2015. God so that the

  2016. proper time he

  2017. may exalt you.

  2018. Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  2019. the last will be

  2020. first and the

  2021. first will be

  2022. last.

  2023. They're able to

  2024. perform this

  2025. miracle, this

  2026. external miracle of

  2027. raising this guy

  2028. up who was

  2029. unable to walk.

  2030. Great power is

  2031. displayed and

  2032. with power always

  2033. comes the

  2034. temptation to

  2035. pride.

  2036. God.

  2037. You've got a

  2038. whole city

  2039. now, throngs of

  2040. people wanting to

  2041. worship and praise

  2042. you for this thing

  2043. you did.

  2044. But they instead,

  2045. in their humility,

  2046. turn the attention

  2047. back to the

  2048. Lord God

  2049. Almighty.

  2050. We are men

  2051. just like you.

  2052. Let's worship the

  2053. true God

  2054. who has been

  2055. gracious to you

  2056. and now is

  2057. especially gracious

  2058. to you

  2059. in Christ.

  2060. With power,

  2061. beloved,

  2062. always comes the

  2063. temptation to

  2064. pride.

  2065. And we must,

  2066. if we're filled

  2067. with the Spirit,

  2068. be humble.

  2069. I wonder if

  2070. some of our

  2071. church leaders

  2072. today,

  2073. given the same

  2074. situation,

  2075. may have taken

  2076. the name of

  2077. Zeus or the

  2078. name of

  2079. Hermes in order

  2080. to show the

  2081. people Christ

  2082. with good

  2083. intention.

  2084. Well, if they

  2085. think I'm

  2086. Zeus,

  2087. I can speak

  2088. as Zeus,

  2089. but lead them

  2090. to Jesus.

  2091. If they would

  2092. have allowed

  2093. for the

  2094. blasphemy

  2095. in order to

  2096. give them a

  2097. larger stage

  2098. for the

  2099. gospel and

  2100. in the process

  2101. forsake the

  2102. gospel altogether.

  2103. I fear that's

  2104. true.

  2105. The person

  2106. who is filled

  2107. with the

  2108. Spirit is

  2109. humble.

  2110. They are not

  2111. self-seeking

  2112. or self-promoting.

  2113. I want to

  2114. give you two

  2115. examples in

  2116. the positive.

  2117. Guys I like

  2118. to call the

  2119. Johns.

  2120. John MacArthur

  2121. and John

  2122. Piper.

  2123. I'm going to

  2124. read you a

  2125. quote that's

  2126. on your

  2127. bulletin from

  2128. Jonathan Edwards.

  2129. These are the

  2130. three I call

  2131. the Johns.

  2132. Both John

  2133. MacArthur and

  2134. John Piper have

  2135. widespread

  2136. ministries.

  2137. They are

  2138. accessed

  2139. millions of

  2140. times.

  2141. I love that

  2142. when I type

  2143. into a

  2144. Google search

  2145. D-E-S

  2146. that Desiring

  2147. God pops up

  2148. first.

  2149. Isn't that

  2150. amazing that

  2151. it's so

  2152. searched,

  2153. sought out,

  2154. right?

  2155. This is a

  2156. ministry of

  2157. John Piper

  2158. that we're

  2159. able to

  2160. access this

  2161. so quickly.

  2162. But you

  2163. note that

  2164. both of

  2165. these men,

  2166. prominent

  2167. pastors,

  2168. preach week

  2169. in and week

  2170. out,

  2171. conference

  2172. speakers,

  2173. that they

  2174. are pastors

  2175. of churches

  2176. and they run

  2177. ministries that

  2178. are not

  2179. called

  2180. John

  2181. MacArthur

  2182. ministries

  2183. or John

  2184. Piper

  2185. ministries,

  2186. right?

  2187. You've got

  2188. John

  2189. MacArthur

  2190. has grace

  2191. to you,

  2192. John

  2193. Piper

  2194. Desiring

  2195. God,

  2196. and they

  2197. have lots

  2198. of resource

  2199. and writers

  2200. and people

  2201. that are

  2202. partnering

  2203. with them

  2204. in those

  2205. efforts.

  2206. Both of

  2207. them give

  2208. away an

  2209. astounding

  2210. amount of

  2211. material every

  2212. year.

  2213. I was about

  2214. to say

  2215. countless,

  2216. but I'm

  2217. sure they

  2218. keep record

  2219. of that,

  2220. and you

  2221. could probably

  2222. access that

  2223. record,

  2224. right?

  2225. They give

  2226. away an

  2227. amount that

  2228. I'm not

  2229. counting,

  2230. lots and

  2231. lots and

  2232. lots of

  2233. free

  2234. resources.

  2235. You can

  2236. download most

  2237. of John

  2238. Piper's

  2239. books in

  2240. PDF form

  2241. for free.

  2242. Access this

  2243. information,

  2244. recorded sermons,

  2245. just giving

  2246. it away for

  2247. the sake of

  2248. the kingdom

  2249. of God.

  2250. Both of

  2251. these men

  2252. have PhDs.

  2253. I don't

  2254. remember how

  2255. many PhDs

  2256. they have

  2257. between them.

  2258. It's more

  2259. than two,

  2260. right?

  2261. I've yet to

  2262. see a book

  2263. that says

  2264. Dr. John

  2265. MacArthur

  2266. on the cover

  2267. or Dr. John

  2268. Piper.

  2269. on the

  2270. cover.

  2271. Both of

  2272. them seem

  2273. to seek,

  2274. right?

  2275. To present

  2276. themselves

  2277. humble to

  2278. the world

  2279. around them,

  2280. not self-seeking,

  2281. not self-promoting,

  2282. rather than

  2283. the other,

  2284. the opposite

  2285. of that being

  2286. true.

  2287. I wonder,

  2288. right,

  2289. being filled

  2290. with the

  2291. Spirit would

  2292. dictate to

  2293. us in some

  2294. measure

  2295. as church

  2296. leadership

  2297. whether our

  2298. name ought to

  2299. be on a

  2300. sign at all

  2301. and certainly

  2302. how big

  2303. the font

  2304. might be.

  2305. On your

  2306. bulletin,

  2307. Jonathan Edwards

  2308. wrote this,

  2309. a truly

  2310. humble man

  2311. is sensible

  2312. of his

  2313. natural distance

  2314. from God,

  2315. of his

  2316. dependence

  2317. on him,

  2318. of the

  2319. insufficiency

  2320. of his own

  2321. power and

  2322. wisdom,

  2323. and that it

  2324. is by God's

  2325. power that

  2326. he is upheld

  2327. and provided

  2328. for,

  2329. and that he

  2330. needs God's

  2331. wisdom to

  2332. lead and

  2333. guide him,

  2334. and his

  2335. might to

  2336. enable him to

  2337. do what

  2338. he ought to

  2339. do for

  2340. him.

  2341. We are

  2342. utterly,

  2343. entirely

  2344. dependent on

  2345. God.

  2346. How is that

  2347. working in

  2348. us,

  2349. right?

  2350. By his

  2351. Spirit.

  2352. So the

  2353. person who

  2354. is filled

  2355. with the

  2356. Spirit of

  2357. God,

  2358. and we'll

  2359. jump back

  2360. to last

  2361. week,

  2362. number one

  2363. is fruitful

  2364. today,

  2365. number two

  2366. is opposed,

  2367. number three

  2368. is bold,

  2369. number four

  2370. is humble.

  2371. Now in

  2372. conclusion,

  2373. I want to

  2374. ask you

  2375. some questions,

  2376. and I want

  2377. to ask you

  2378. these questions,

  2379. there's a lot

  2380. of questions,

  2381. but I want

  2382. to ask them

  2383. to you

  2384. kind of

  2385. categorically,

  2386. following along

  2387. with the

  2388. points of

  2389. today.

  2390. So to

  2391. follow along

  2392. with point

  2393. two,

  2394. a series of

  2395. questions for

  2396. you.

  2397. What are you

  2398. afraid of

  2399. that prevents

  2400. you from

  2401. following Jesus

  2402. Christ?

  2403. What are you

  2404. afraid of that

  2405. prevents you from

  2406. following Jesus

  2407. Christ?

  2408. if you have

  2409. never followed

  2410. him,

  2411. if you've

  2412. never placed

  2413. believing faith

  2414. in Jesus

  2415. Christ,

  2416. what is it

  2417. that you

  2418. will not

  2419. give up

  2420. for his

  2421. sake?

  2422. And I

  2423. would encourage

  2424. you to run

  2425. through an

  2426. inventory of

  2427. things that

  2428. come to your

  2429. mind.

  2430. Anything in

  2431. your life,

  2432. a person,

  2433. a possession,

  2434. some experience,

  2435. that you would

  2436. not be willing

  2437. to give up,

  2438. to follow Christ,

  2439. for the very

  2440. first time,

  2441. or to follow

  2442. him in a

  2443. fresh new

  2444. way today.

  2445. What are you

  2446. afraid of that

  2447. prevents you

  2448. from following

  2449. Jesus Christ?

  2450. Is it really

  2451. worth what you

  2452. think it is?

  2453. If you are a

  2454. follower of

  2455. Jesus Christ,

  2456. are you

  2457. obedient to

  2458. the call of

  2459. Christ?

  2460. If you are a

  2461. follower of

  2462. Jesus Christ,

  2463. are you

  2464. obedient in

  2465. all things?

  2466. The task

  2467. that is given

  2468. to us,

  2469. beloved,

  2470. is to be

  2471. propagators of

  2472. the kingdom

  2473. of God.

  2474. We are to be

  2475. Jesus Christ's

  2476. ambassadors on

  2477. this earth.

  2478. This is the

  2479. only thing

  2480. that is worthwhile

  2481. to pursue,

  2482. and we can

  2483. pursue that in

  2484. many, many,

  2485. many ways.

  2486. We can pursue

  2487. that in good

  2488. fruitful work.

  2489. We can pursue

  2490. that as parents.

  2491. We can pursue

  2492. that as good

  2493. friends.

  2494. There are lots

  2495. of ways.

  2496. We can pursue

  2497. it in a

  2498. hobby.

  2499. There are

  2500. lots of ways

  2501. that we do

  2502. this, but

  2503. all should be

  2504. about the

  2505. advancement of

  2506. the kingdom

  2507. of God.

  2508. Are you

  2509. obedient in

  2510. all things,

  2511. and what are

  2512. you afraid to

  2513. give up if

  2514. you're not?

  2515. Secondly,

  2516. are you

  2517. bold?

  2518. Are you

  2519. bold?

  2520. What causes

  2521. you to shrink

  2522. back when you

  2523. should press

  2524. forward?

  2525. What is it

  2526. that stops

  2527. you from

  2528. pressing forward,

  2529. being bold for

  2530. the sake of

  2531. Christ,

  2532. when you

  2533. should?

  2534. Is it your

  2535. reputation?

  2536. Some level of

  2537. prominence you've

  2538. reached in a

  2539. position that you

  2540. have?

2541. Is it a job that

  2542. you hold that you

  2543. don't want to lose?

  2544. What's keeping you

  2545. from being bold for

  2546. the sake of Christ?

  2547. And number three,

  2548. are you humble?

  2549. Do you find

  2550. yourself humble?

  2551. Do you believe that

  2552. you have done

  2553. anything to be

  2554. accepted by God

  2555. in Christ this

  2556. morning?

  2557. Do you think

  2558. there's anything

  2559. that you do

  2560. that makes you

  2561. accepted by God

  2562. in Christ?

  2563. There's nothing,

  2564. absolutely nothing

  2565. that you have

  2566. done or are

  2567. doing or can

  2568. do to be

  2569. accepted by God

  2570. in Christ.

  2571. Beloved, the only

  2572. thing we can boast

  2573. in is the cross

  2574. of Christ.

  2575. we boast in

  2576. him, his

  2577. personhood, his

  2578. work, his

  2579. passive and his

  2580. active obedience,

  2581. perfect in every

  2582. way.

  2583. We sang about that

  2584. this morning, that

  2585. his righteousness

  2586. becomes our

  2587. righteousness, that

  2588. our just due

  2589. punishment was

  2590. punished in him

  2591. on the cross.

2592. So do you boast in

  2593. anything other

  2594. than the cross

  2595. of Jesus?

  2596. Jesus.

  2597. And then I'll

  2598. conclude with just

  2599. one overarching

  2600. question and pray

  2601. for us.

  2602. Are you filled

  2603. with the Spirit?

  2604. Let's pray

  2605. together.
