  1. I had a break. I think we were in Acts like three weeks ago, maybe, or something like that. I can't quite remember.

  2. But I appreciate you being patient with me. I got pretty sick a couple weeks ago. I should say three weeks ago.

  3. I feel like I've been sick for over a month, really, and just kind of out of the game.

  4. So thanks for all your prayers. I really, really am grateful.

  5. Kathleen and I had a really great week at UAB Hospital, to be honest.

  6. It was really a good time together, even though I wasn't feeling good.

  7. And during that time, whenever I go to the hospital, whenever I go back to Birmingham, it's a lot of memories of death,

  8. a lot of memories of wrestling with whether or not I was going to live or die, and contemplating eternity and all of that.

  9. So I come back definitely renewed with a hope that I will live for eternity and not just what we see right here.

  10. Because what we see here is fleeting. It's short. It doesn't last.

  11. And so I kind of come even with a lot of that in thinking about our text today.

  12. So just join me in a word of prayer.

  13. Father, this is your time to work amongst the hearts of your people who are gathered.

  14. And I just ask that our mind's attention and our heart's affection will be placed completely on you.

  15. God, just protect us from the heart of your heart.

  16. Not what happened before this time or not what's going to happen after this time.

  17. That you would free us of all distractions.

  18. God, just protect this time.

  19. And may your word encourage, challenge, convict, and build up the body of Christ.

  20. In his name, amen.

  21. Amen.

  22. So we're in Acts 15.

  23. And typical good preaching rules, just to read the text first.

  24. And then we'll dive into it.

  25. So I'm going to just rewind a little bit though.

  26. Just so you know what's been going on before we dive in.

  27. But thus far, really, in Acts, if you look at chapter 14,

  28. you see that Paul and Barnabas have kind of gone into the Gentile world.

  29. And they're preaching the gospel to non-Jews.

  30. Like the people in the Roman Empire, Greeks, and others.

  31. And the gospel is taking effect in people's hearts.

  32. People are coming to Christ.

  33. People are surrendering all they have to the gospel.

  34. And it hasn't really come easy.

  35. They've suffered persecution.

  36. Paul is even stoned, even to the point of death at one point.

  37. And so let's just start at verse 27 of chapter 14.

  38. Then we'll go down to 15.

  39. So it says,

  40. When they arrived, they gathered the church together

  41. and declared all that God had done with them,

  42. and how he opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

  43. And they remained no little time with the disciples.

  44. So that's sort of the backdrop,

  45. is the gospel is going forward to the Gentiles,

  46. and people are coming to Christ.

  47. So, in chapter 15, we're going to see a kind of a hiccup,

  48. I guess you could say, to the whole mission going to the Gentiles.

  49. All right, starting in chapter 15, verse 1.

  50. But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers,

  51. Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses,

  52. you cannot be saved.

  53. And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them,

  54. Paul and Barnabas and some others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem

  55. to the apostles and the elders about this question.

  56. So being sent on their way by the church,

  57. they passed by Phoenicia and Samaria,

  58. describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles

  59. and brought great joy to all the brothers.

  60. And when they came to Jerusalem,

  61. they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders,

  62. and they declared all that God had done with them.

  63. But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees

  64. rose up and said,

  65. it is necessary to circumcise them in order to keep the laws of Moses.

  66. The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter.

  67. And after there had been much debate,

  68. Peter stood up and said to them,

  69. Brothers,

  70. you know that in the early days God made a choice among you

  71. that by the mouth of the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

  72. And God, who knows the heart,

  73. bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did.

  74. And he made no distinction between us and them,

  75. having cleansed their hearts by faith.

  76. Now, therefore,

  77. why are you putting God to the test

  78. by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples

  79. that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

  80. But we believe that we will be saved

  81. through the grace of our Lord Jesus,

  82. just as they will.

  83. And the assembly fell silent.

  84. And they listened to Barnabas and Paul

  85. as they related what signs and wonders

  86. God had done through them among the Gentiles.

  87. After they finished speaking,

  88. James replied,

  89. Brothers, listen to me.

  90. Simeon, that's a form of Peter's name,

  91. has related how God first visited the Gentiles

  92. to take from them a people for his name.

  93. And with this, the words of the prophet agreed,

  94. just as it was written,

  95. After this, I will return

  96. and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen.

  97. I will rebuild its ruins

  98. and I will restore it.

  99. And the remnant of mankind

  100. may seek the Lord.

  101. And all the Gentiles who are called by my name,

  102. says the Lord who makes these things

  103. known from old.

  104. Therefore, my judgment

  105. is that we should not trouble

  106. those of the Gentiles who turn to God,

  107. but should write to them

  108. to abstain from the things

  109. polluted by idols,

  110. from sexual immorality

  111. and from things that have been strangled

  112. and from blood.

  113. The ancient,

  114. excuse me,

  115. for from ancient generations,

  116. Moses has had in every city

  117. those who proclaim him.

  118. For he is,

  119. excuse me,

  120. for he is read every Sabbath

  121. in the city of God.

  122. So,

  123. we're going to unpack all this slowly,

  124. kind of scene by scene.

  125. But this is a

  126. kind of known church-wide

  127. as the Council of Jerusalem.

  128. 48 or 49 A.D.

  129. probably.

  130. And it was between

  131. the apostles

  132. and some other church elders,

  133. kind of against the backdrop

  134. of the Pharisees

  135. and what we would say

  136. as the Judaizers.

  137. And I just kind of want to

  138. take a moment and say,

  139. I challenge you to

  140. to read church history,

  141. particularly looking at

  142. councils of the church

  143. throughout the ages.

  144. Some well-known ones

  145. that particularly reform people

  146. kind of hold very close.

  147. Council of Nicaea

  148. in 325 A.D.

  149. That was when

  150. they condemned

  151. the Arian heresy.

  152. So,

  153. Jesus isn't fully God.

  154. That was the heresy

  155. and they universally

  156. condemned that.

  157. Jesus is fully God

  158. but also fully man.

  159. The Council of Carthage

  160. in 418 A.D.

  161. That's when

  162. St. Augustine

  163. and some other

  164. church leaders

  165. condemned

  166. Pelagius

  167. for saying

  168. that man was born

  169. with a clean slate.

  170. Man was born sinless.

  171. So,

  172. that was universally

  173. condemned.

  174. And then also

  175. to a lot of people

  176. in 1618

  177. the Senate of Dort

  178. which condemned

  179. Arminianism.

  180. So,

  181. a lot of

  182. big councils

  183. out there

  184. but

  185. but why,

  186. right?

  187. Tell me why I should care.

  188. Why should I even

  189. look at or read

  190. these things?

  191. Well,

  192. look on your

  193. your church bulletin

  194. if you have it

  195. and

  196. this is a pretty

  197. great statement

  198. that R.C.

  199. Spurl made

  200. just about

  201. looking at our history,

  202. looking at our

  203. tradition,

  204. looking at church

  205. councils

  206. and so

  207. this is why

  208. you should care.

  209. This is what I said.

  210. Although tradition

  211. does not rule

  212. our interpretation

  213. of scripture,

  214. it does guide it.

  215. If upon reading

  216. a particular passage

  217. you have come up

  218. with an interpretation

  219. that has escaped

  220. the notice

  221. of every other

  222. Christian

  223. for 2,000 years

  224. or has been

  225. championed

  226. by universally

  227. recognized

  228. heretics,

  229. chances are

  230. pretty good

  231. that you have

  232. better abandoned

  233. your interpretation.

  234. Is it really good?

  235. There's no new

  236. truth,

  237. there's no new

  238. gospel,

  239. there's no new

  240. things added

  241. to what we believe.

  242. It's been passed

  243. down throughout

  244. the ages.

  245. So if you

  246. come up with

  247. something completely

  248. new that has

  249. that no one's

  250. noticed before

  251. or has been

  252. universally condemned

  253. by the church,

  254. there's reason

  255. to fear.

  256. So this is

  257. one of the

  258. earliest,

  259. really,

  260. church councils

  261. we see

  262. and it seems

  263. to be by those

  264. who are on the

  265. fringe of the church

  266. and not necessarily

  267. mainstream.

  268. And so

  269. for history people

  270. you could just say

  271. this is

  272. the Jerusalem

  273. council,

  274. the Magna Carta

  275. of the Christian

  276. church.

  277. For people

  278. of a more

  279. competitive nature

  280. you could say

  281. this is

  282. the apostles

  283. versus the

  284. Judaizers.

  285. And then

  286. one of my

  287. favorites

  288. for you

  289. really,

  290. really nerdy

  291. theological

  292. Puritan

  293. types,

  294. this is

  295. the title

  296. of the message,

  297. man's fallen

  298. tendency

  299. to add

  300. or improve

  301. upon the grace

  302. of God

  303. in order to

  304. prepare himself

  305. there unto

  306. the final judgment.

  307. If you like

  308. that title,

  309. personally I like

  310. that one.

  311. To improve

  312. upon the grace

  313. of God

  314. in order to

  315. prepare yourself

  316. unto the final

  317. judgment.

  318. so,

  319. again,

  320. I'm going to

  321. tell you why

  322. you should

  323. care.

  324. Because

  325. if you knew

  326. that you were

  327. about to

  328. go through

  329. physical death

  330. and then

  331. spiritually

  332. entering

  333. to eternity

  334. and to

  335. the judgment,

  336. what are you

  337. placing your

  338. hope in?

  339. It's all

  340. cool and

  341. theological

  342. just on

  343. paper,

  344. but deep

  345. down

  346. you're going

  347. to want

  348. to hope

  349. in something

  350. that's true

  351. and secure

  352. that gives

  353. your soul

  354. peace and

  355. not in the

  356. back of your

  357. mind is

  358. saying,

  359. I hope

  360. I did

  361. what I

  362. had to

  363. do.

  364. I hope

  365. that I

  366. did all

  367. the good

  368. things I

  369. could do

  370. and that I

  371. believed all

  372. the right

  373. things.

  374. Where is

  375. your hope

  376. going to

  377. be?

  378. Is it

  379. going to

  380. be in

  381. your own

  382. goodness

  383. and your

  384. works

  385. or is

  386. it going

  387. to be

  388. in the

  389. finished,

  390. completed,

  391. work of

  392. Jesus

  393. Christ?

  394. So there's

  395. three points

  396. and then we'll

  397. get into some

  398. more application

  399. later.

  400. But I'm

  401. kind of doing

  402. this as a

  403. scene one,

  404. scene two,

  405. scene three

  406. of all this.

  407. But in

  408. verses one

  409. through five

  410. you see the

  411. first point

  412. which is

  413. scene one,

  414. the dissension.

  415. So this is

  416. the problem

  417. that's going

  418. on.

  419. And as I

  420. said before,

  421. Paul and

  422. Barnabas have

  423. been out

  424. in the

  425. Gentile

  426. world

  427. preaching

  428. the gospel.

  429. People have

  430. been coming

  431. to faith.

  432. Great

  433. things are

  434. happening.

  435. They have

  436. pressed on

  437. regardless of

  438. persecution or

  439. any other

  440. thing.

  441. And now

  442. all that

  443. they've done

  444. is being

  445. called into

  446. question by

  447. those who

  448. hold to the

  449. law of

  450. Moses.

  451. So these

  452. are Jews

  453. who say,

  454. yeah,

  455. like Jesus,

  456. he was the

  457. Messiah,

  458. amen,

  459. but we

  460. have to

  461. keep all

  462. the old

  463. stuff as

  464. well if

  465. we're going

  466. to continue

  467. to do

  468. this.

  469. And we

  470. have to

  471. instruct

  472. the Gentiles

  473. to also

  474. observe all

  475. these things.

  476. So their

  477. mission was

  478. being called

  479. them to

  480. question.

  481. And so

  482. I guess in

  483. the early

  484. days you

  485. could say

  486. that you

  487. might think

  488. that the

  489. biggest threats

  490. to the

  491. church were

  492. from the

  493. outside,

  494. physical

  495. persecution,

  496. but really

  497. I'm fully

  498. convinced that

  499. the greater

  500. threats,

  501. the greater

  502. dangers come

  503. from within

  504. the church

  505. by way of

  506. false teaching.

  507. It destroys

  508. it from the

  509. inside out.

  510. In 2 Peter

    2 Peter 2 chapter mention

  511. chapter 2,

  512. Peter says,

  513. just as there

  514. will be false

  515. teachers among

  516. you who will

  517. secretly bring

  518. in destructive

  519. heresies,

  520. even denying

  521. the master

  522. who bought

  523. them,

  524. bringing upon

  525. themselves

  526. swift

  527. destruction.

  528. And among

  529. these destructive

  530. heresies,

  531. the longest

  532. living one,

  533. the longest

  534. living heresy

  535. ever, and it

  536. comes in so

  537. many different

  538. forms,

  539. religions,

  540. traditions,

  541. cultural

  542. ideals,

  543. it's the

  544. heresy that

  545. you can

  546. achieve the

  547. right standing

  548. and salvation

  549. with God

  550. by your

  551. own merit,

  552. by how you

  553. work,

  554. by how good

  555. you are,

  556. by the good

  557. things that

  558. you do,

  559. because it

  560. is within our

  561. fallen nature,

  562. it is the

  563. hardest thing

  564. for a fallen

  565. man to

  566. admit that

  567. he needs

  568. the grace

  569. of God.

  570. We are so

  571. works-driven

  572. in all that we

  573. do, all of you

  574. are, no matter

  575. what you do.

  576. You do it in

  577. school, you do it

  578. in sports, you

  579. do it in

  580. friendships and

  581. relationships, you

  582. feel like you

  583. have to earn, you

  584. feel like people

  585. have to pay you

  586. back, it's a

  587. merited-based

  588. thing, you feel

  589. like you're loved

  590. by people based

  591. on your own

  592. goodness a lot

  593. of the time.

  594. It's in us, it's

  595. in our deepest

  596. part to think

  597. that we can

  598. achieve this, and

  599. it carries into

  600. the spiritual realm,

  601. like we can do

  602. enough good in

  603. order to be

  604. right before God.

  605. that's in us

  606. very deeply, and

  607. I love how it

  608. kind of says

  609. there was no

  610. small dissension

  611. and debate, like

  612. they were ticked

  613. that these guys

  614. were saying this

  615. stuff, and so

  616. they kind of

  617. went right at

  618. them, and so

  619. what is the

  620. dissension, like

  621. what is the

  622. question?

  623. And so you

  624. see that in

  625. verse 1 and

  626. in verse 5,

  627. these Jews

  628. were saying,

  629. unless you are

  630. circumcised

  631. according to the

  632. custom of Moses,

  633. you cannot be

  634. saved.

  635. Then in verse

  636. 5, it is

  637. necessary to

  638. circumcise them,

  639. the Gentiles, and

  640. to order them to

  641. keep the law of

  642. Moses.

  643. So that was a

  644. huge point of

  645. contention in the

  646. early church, and

  647. that is simply,

  648. how much does a

  649. Gentile convert to

  650. Christ, how much

  651. of the law of

  652. Moses did they

  653. need to obey?

  654. Because Gentiles

  655. are sort of

  656. newcomers, right?

  657. Israel were the

  658. people that God

  659. had shown himself

  660. to, and given

  661. his law to.

  662. So this is a

  663. big deal.

  664. Should Gentile

  665. believers submit

  666. to all the

  667. requirements of

  668. the law of

  669. Moses given to

  670. the Jewish

  671. nation, especially

  672. circumcision, in

  673. order to be a

  674. part of the

  675. church?

  676. You get asked

  677. that question

  678. today.

  679. I can't tell

  680. you how many

  681. times on the

  682. college campus

  683. you get asked

  684. a question by

  685. either a, you

  686. know, an

  687. unbeliever who

  688. will say, well,

  689. what about

  690. Leviticus?

  691. What about all

  692. those laws in

  693. there?

  694. You say you

  695. believe the

  696. Bible literally,

  697. so what about,

  698. are you supposed

  699. to do this,

  700. this, and this,

  701. and this?

  702. So it's

  703. applicable very

  704. much to

  705. everyone here.

  706. How much of

  707. the law are we

  708. supposed to

  709. follow?

  710. So the Jewish

  711. law, I'm going

  712. to get into that

  713. more next week.

  714. I'm just going

  715. to talk about

  716. the law, and

  717. so give you a

  718. one-on-one on

  719. the law, but

  720. very simple, you

  721. know, glazing

  722. over it, there

  723. are moral laws,

  724. that's the Ten

  725. Commandments, that

  726. is like, tells us

  727. what sin is and

  728. how to honor God.

  729. Those are actually

  730. still in effect for

  731. us today as

  732. believers, those

  733. have not been done

  734. away with at all.

  735. Other ones are a

  736. more ceremonial

  737. nature, circumcision,

  738. rituals, festivals,

  739. purity and cleansing

  740. that they had to do,

  741. the way that they

  742. dressed.

  743. I love when I get

  744. asked the question

  745. about tattoos, like

  746. I love that question.

  747. So, like, so what

  748. do you do about

  749. that, right?

  750. So there's these

  751. things that God

  752. gave the nation of

  753. Israel to act like

  754. and to do, to set

  755. themselves apart from

  756. other nations.

  757. So circumcision,

  758. though, seems to be

  759. the biggest one, a

  760. big one.

  761. And that comes

  762. from, really,

  763. Genesis 17, 9-14.

  764. And circumcision

  765. was an outward sign

  766. that you belong to

  767. the people of God.

  768. And it also was an

  769. outward expression that

  770. you were devoted to

  771. keeping the law of

  772. Moses.

  773. But, I'll just go

  774. ahead and throw this

  775. out there.

  776. Circumcision, in its

  777. truest form, was an

  778. outward expression of

  779. an inward need.

  780. it was saying, like,

  781. I need God to

  782. circumcise my heart.

  783. What Daniel just

  784. read a little while

  785. ago is a perfect

  786. picture of that.

  787. We need new hearts.

  788. God has to take out

  789. our heart of stone

  790. and put in a heart

  791. of flesh so that we

  792. can walk in a way

  793. that pleases God.

  794. So that's really what

  795. circumcision was.

  796. But these guys saw it

  797. as, like, a cultic

  798. right to be

  799. circumcised, to have

  800. male converts who are

  801. Gentile go through

  802. this process.

  803. So, here's the

  804. danger.

  805. Here's the two

  806. points of contention.

  807. Okay?

  808. Number one, it's

  809. dangerous to the

  810. gospel, the true

  811. gospel, because they

  812. were arguing that

  813. Gentiles had to do

  814. all this stuff in

  815. order to be made

  816. right with God.

  817. So, therefore, it is

  818. a works-based

  819. righteousness and

  820. salvation.

  821. So, the true

  822. essence of the

  823. gospel is being

  824. threatened.

  825. Secondly, a big

  826. one, the church's

  827. unity.

  828. The church's unity

  829. is being threatened.

  830. So, Gentiles have

  831. to adhere to all

  832. of the Mosaic

  833. law.

  834. That means that

  835. they have to leave

  836. their own communities

  837. and leave the

  838. Gentiles to be

  839. separated from

  840. them.

  841. They wouldn't be

  842. able to eat with

  843. them, to have

  844. fellowship with

  845. them, because they

  846. would be considered

  847. ceremonially unclean

  848. by Jewish law.

  849. And even taking the

  850. Lord's Supper, they

  851. wouldn't have been

  852. able to do that

  853. with their fellow

  854. Gentiles who

  855. believed.

  856. So, just for further

  857. reading on that, look

  858. at Romans, you don't

  859. got to turn there, but

  860. just write Romans 2,

  861. 25 through 29, for

  862. just some more

  863. reading on just the

  864. law itself.

  865. So, false teaching

  866. was threatening the

  867. gospel itself and the

  868. church's unity.

  869. So, this is a big

  870. deal.

  871. And the attitude of

  872. the Judaizers seems

  873. to be like self-appointed

  874. leaders.

  875. Seems to be haughty.

  876. Seems to be superior.

  877. We are holier than you

  878. guys.

  879. And so, we're going to

  880. come down here and

  881. inform you, you

  882. ignorant Gentiles, that

  883. that's great you have

  884. Jesus, but you also

  885. need this other stuff

  886. in order to rightly

  887. honor God.

  888. Like, your faith is

  889. not sufficient.

  890. You have to have

  891. this plus.

  892. And in their minds,

  893. you've got to think

  894. about where they're

  895. coming from.

  896. They're like, we're

  897. the Jews.

  898. Like, we are the

  899. people that God has

  900. disclosed himself to

  901. for thousands of

  902. years.

  903. Like, he's given us

  904. his laws, given us

  905. his statutes.

  906. And even when Jesus

  907. was here, he was a

  908. Jew, and he upheld

  909. the law of Moses.

  910. But he did it to

  911. fulfill it.

  912. Insert that.

  913. But surely, right,

  914. they must be

  915. thinking, it's God's

  916. will for us to go

  917. and educate and

  918. teach these ignorant

  919. Gentiles about all

  920. the stuff that they

  921. don't know in order

  922. to make them more

  923. holy, acceptable,

  924. and devoted to God.

  925. Yeah, Jesus is good,

  926. but you need plus

  927. the Mosaic law to be

  928. right before God.

  929. So, big deal.

  930. So, this didn't go

  931. without opposition,

  932. as we see.

  933. The apostles, I love

  934. that, like it says,

  935. that Paul and

  936. Barnabas had no small

  937. dissension and debate

  938. with them.

  939. So, they're like,

  940. whoa, if you think

  941. you're going to go and

  942. corrupt them, think

  943. again.

  944. We're going to go to

  945. Jerusalem, we're going

  946. to sort this out.

  947. So, that's where they

  948. go.

  949. They're going to go

  950. deal with this.

  951. It's just an issue

  952. that's too big for

  953. just a small local

  954. congregation to figure

  955. out.

  956. So, this is a

  957. church-wide thing.

  958. So, that's what,

  959. that's the problem.

  960. That's the dissension.

  961. That's the question

  962. that's being asked.

  963. I'm going to tell you

  964. why you should care

  965. later if you don't

  966. already care.

  967. But then let's just

  968. move into scene two.

  969. Scene two is the

  970. discussion.

  971. So, the dissension

  972. and now the discussion.

  973. And that's seen

  974. in verses six

  975. through eighteen.

  976. So, just sort of

  977. setting the scene.

  978. It says the apostles

  979. and the elders.

  980. So, they're providing

  981. like the main

  982. opposition, the main

  983. debate in leadership

  984. over the council.

  985. But I want you to

  986. kind of see this.

  987. Okay?

  988. This is why we are

  989. a elder-led, but we

  990. are also congregational

  991. here at Christ's

  992. Family.

  993. But if you look at

  994. verse twenty-two,

  995. it says that the

  996. whole church was

  997. present for this

  998. momentous occasion,

  999. and they also gave

  1000. consent to the

  1001. final outcome.

  1002. It wasn't like,

  1003. we're just these

  1004. humble people down

  1005. here and we have

  1006. to rely on these

  1007. apostles to be like

  1008. a direct connection

  1009. to God.

  1010. So, it was a

  1011. church-wide thing

  1012. that was consented

  1013. to.

  1014. So, whenever there

  1015. is a serious

  1016. spiritual, doctrinal

  1017. issue under

  1018. consideration,

  1019. congregation,

  1020. okay?

  1021. How should we

  1022. deal with it?

  1023. Think about it,

  1024. just here in our

  1025. own congregation.

  1026. Our example is

  1027. right here in our

  1028. text.

  1029. Look at verse

  1030. seven.

  1031. It says,

  1032. after there was

  1033. much debate.

  1034. So, important

  1035. decisions are not

  1036. decided by haunches

  1037. we have,

  1038. feelings,

  1039. our opinions.

  1040. They are decided

  1041. by prayer,

  1042. humility,

  1043. wisdom,

  1044. careful logic,

  1045. and reason from

  1046. the scriptures.

  1047. That happens

  1048. right here.

  1049. They use the

  1050. scripture to back

  1051. up what they're

  1052. trying to say.

  1053. So, the first

  1054. guy to kind of

  1055. weigh in is

  1056. Peter.

  1057. So, if I could

  1058. think I have some

  1059. guys on my team,

  1060. I would want Peter

1061. on my team and I

  1062. would want Paul

  1063. on my team.

  1064. And I think that

  1065. would be probably

  1066. it in regard to

  1067. dealing with, in

  1068. terms of how much

  1069. of the Jewish law

  1070. do we have to

  1071. obey.

  1072. I just wish I

  1073. could have been

  1074. there, but this

  1075. is a big deal.

  1076. So, Peter kind of

  1077. weighs in.

  1078. And he says,

  1079. like in the early

  1080. days, probably

  1081. referring to when

  1082. he was used to

  1083. go to the house

  1084. of Cornelius and

  1085. to take the gospel

  1086. to the Gentiles.

  1087. But I'm going to

  1088. show you, just

  1089. with Peter, three

  1090. arguments that he

  1091. kind of uses to

  1092. say, no

  1093. circumcision for

  1094. the Gentiles, no

  1095. mosaic law for

  1096. the Gentiles.

  1097. So, you see the

  1098. first argument in

  1099. verse 8.

  1100. And he's saying

  1101. that like God

  1102. has given approval

  1103. of the faith of

  1104. the Gentiles, who

  1105. placed their faith

  1106. in Christ by

  1107. giving them the

  1108. Holy Spirit.

  1109. So, they received

  1110. the Holy Spirit

  1111. without being

  1112. circumcised and

  1113. without the

  1114. mosaic law.

  1115. So, he was

  1116. saying, they

  1117. didn't do those

  1118. things.

  1119. And God

  1120. himself, through

  1121. the power of

  1122. the gospel,

  1123. regenerated their

  1124. hearts and gave

  1125. them the Holy

  1126. Spirit.

  1127. Maybe today, you

  1128. might compare it to

  1129. people in the

  1130. church and say,

  1131. you have to be

  1132. baptized in

  1133. order to have,

  1134. in water, in

  1135. order to have

  1136. the Holy Spirit,

  1137. or at

  1138. conversion.

  1139. So, that's

  1140. his first

  1141. argument.

  1142. God gave

  1143. them the Holy

  1144. Spirit.

  1145. Argument 2

  1146. is in

  1147. verse 9.

  1148. And he's

  1149. referring to

  1150. the reality

  1151. that God

  1152. had cleansed

  1153. their hearts

  1154. by faith,

  1155. not by

  1156. works of

  1157. the law

  1158. or by

  1159. circumcision.

  1160. He might

  1161. have even

  1162. had a memory

  1163. of Cornelius

  1164. again when God

  1165. spoke to him

  1166. in that vision

  1167. and said,

  1168. hey, what

  1169. God has

  1170. called clean,

  1171. do not

  1172. call common.

  1173. God has

  1174. cleaned them,

  1175. so don't look

  1176. on them and

  1177. say that your

  1178. faith is not

  1179. good enough and

  1180. that you are

  1181. still unclean.

  1182. That Spirit-born

  1183. faith.

  1184. Okay?

  1185. God had

  1186. cleansed them.

  1187. The third

  1188. argument in

  1189. verse 10,

  1190. and I love

  1191. this because he

  1192. just kind of

  1193. poses a rhetorical

  1194. question,

  1195. kind of like

  1196. revealing that no

  1197. human being can

  1198. keep the law

  1199. of God

  1200. perfectly.

  1201. perfectly.

  1202. So, again,

  1203. the law,

  1204. we're going to

  1205. give you a quick

  1206. rundown next

  1207. week, but I

  1208. hope it was

  1209. more appropriate

  1210. for next week.

  1211. But Peter says

  1212. in regard to

  1213. the Mosaic

  1214. Law, like,

  1215. why in the

  1216. world are we

  1217. Jews trying to

  1218. place such a

  1219. heavy burden,

  1220. a heavy yoke,

  1221. on the shoulders

  1222. of the Gentiles

  1223. when none of

  1224. our forefathers,

  1225. and we,

  1226. cannot carry it?

  1227. Like, are you

  1228. crazy?

  1229. We cannot

  1230. place this

  1231. burden on

  1232. them.

  1233. And the

  1234. metaphor,

  1235. just look at

  1236. the word in

  1237. the verse

  1238. yoke,

  1239. it's like this

  1240. heavy burden,

  1241. something that

  1242. an oxen would

  1243. carry.

  1244. It refers to

  1245. the law,

  1246. not just

  1247. circumcision,

  1248. but the

  1249. entire Mosaic

  1250. Law.

  1251. Paul refers to

  1252. the law as a

  1253. yoke of

  1254. slavery.

  1255. And by

  1256. speaking of

  1257. the law as

  1258. an unbearable

  1259. yoke,

  1260. Peter is not

  1261. denying that the

  1262. law is still a

  1263. good thing.

  1264. It's a good

  1265. thing, because it

  1266. tells us what

  1267. dishonors God and

  1268. what pleases God.

  1269. It was a gift

  1270. from God, but

  1271. it was not

  1272. intended to

  1273. be the means by

  1274. which you were

  1275. made right with

  1276. God.

  1277. It's to expose

  1278. the reality that

  1279. you can't be made

  1280. right with God

  1281. according to your

  1282. own works.

  1283. you can't keep

  1284. the law

  1285. perfectly.

  1286. The law

  1287. itself never

  1288. provides people

  1289. with the spiritual

  1290. power to keep

  1291. it.

  1292. We need

  1293. something else

  1294. in order to

  1295. keep the law.

  1296. It's what Daniel

  1297. read earlier.

  1298. It's like we

  1299. need God to

  1300. change our

  1301. hearts.

  1302. We need to be

  1303. born again.

  1304. We need to be

  1305. regenerated by

  1306. the power of

  1307. the Spirit to

  1308. keep the law

  1309. perfectly.

  1310. So, that's

  1311. what he's trying

  1312. to say.

  1313. This law was

  1314. to show you

  1315. that you

  1316. can't do

  1317. it.

  1318. It was to

  1319. point you

  1320. to the

  1321. Savior who

  1322. could do

  1323. it.

  1324. You need

  1325. deliverance.

  1326. You need

  1327. the Savior.

  1328. So, then he

  1329. kind of wraps

  1330. up in verse

  1331. 11 with that

  1332. closing, kind

  1333. of going back

  1334. to the thesis

  1335. here.

  1336. He kind of

  1337. closes and

  1338. he says,

  1339. but we

  1340. believe that

  1341. we will be

  1342. saved through

  1343. the grace of

  1344. the Lord

  1345. Jesus just as

  1346. they will.

  1347. the only

  1348. means of

  1349. salvation for

  1350. both Jew

  1351. and Gentile

  1352. comes only

  1353. as a gift

  1354. of God

  1355. by his

  1356. grace.

  1357. And the

  1358. connecting

  1359. point of

  1360. that is

  1361. our faith,

  1362. our complete

  1363. trust in

  1364. the Savior

  1365. to save

  1366. us.

  1367. So, that's

  1368. Peter.

  1369. Then he

  1370. does a

  1371. mic drop

  1372. and everybody's

  1373. quiet.

  1374. And then

  1375. Paul and

  1376. Barnabas

  1377. stand up

  1378. and they

  1379. speak out

  1380. in defense

  1381. of God's

  1382. work through

  1383. them and

  1384. the Gentiles.

  1385. Look at

  1386. the verses.

  1387. They related

  1388. what signs

  1389. and wonders

  1390. God had

  1391. done through

  1392. them among

  1393. the Gentiles.

  1394. So, he

  1395. had given

  1396. them great

  1397. success in

  1398. their mission

  1399. to the

  1400. Gentiles.

  1401. And I

  1402. want to be

  1403. clear here.

  1404. Paul and

  1405. Barnabas

  1406. aren't using

  1407. experience to

  1408. prove what

  1409. happened or

  1410. to prove

  1411. something true.

  1412. They're just

  1413. trying to say

  1414. like, this

  1415. happened and

  1416. we experienced

  1417. it because

  1418. God said

  1419. it would.

  1420. He promised

  1421. that this

  1422. would happen

  1423. and now

  1424. we're seeing

  1425. it.

  1426. He's not

  1427. saying, well,

  1428. these good

  1429. things happen

  1430. so it must

  1431. be true.

  1432. They're saying,

  1433. he's saying,

  1434. God promised

  1435. these things

  1436. would happen

  1437. and now we

  1438. see them

  1439. and God

  1440. is true.

  1441. Big difference.

  1442. So, that's

  1443. what they

  1444. kind of say.

  1445. We saw

  1446. God work

  1447. among us.

  1448. He did

  1449. wonders

  1450. among the

  1451. Gentiles.

  1452. And then

  1453. lastly,

  1454. James

  1455. stands up.

  1456. And this

  1457. is James,

  1458. the brother

  1459. of Jesus.

  1460. He kind

  1461. of weighs

  1462. in on the

  1463. argument.

  1464. And he

  1465. says, well,

  1466. you heard

  1467. Peter, you

  1468. heard Paul

  1469. and Barnabas,

  1470. but I want

  1471. to tell you

  1472. that what

  1473. they just

  1474. said is

  1475. supported

  1476. heavily by

  1477. Scripture.

  1478. That's kind

  1479. of what he

  1480. stands up

  1481. and says

  1482. here.

  1483. And he

  1484. refers to

  1485. the prophets

  1486. in verse

  1487. 15.

  1488. And he

  1489. really could

  1490. appeal to

  1491. many,

  1492. many,

  1493. many Old

  1494. Testament

  1495. texts that

  1496. defend the

  1497. inclusion of

  1498. the Gentiles

  1499. and the

  1500. people of

  1501. God.

  1502. Isaiah

  1503. 45,

  1504. 21 is

  1505. one verse.

  1506. Isaiah

  1507. 45,

  1508. 21.

  1509. But James

  1510. refers to

  1511. Amos 9,

  1512. 11 through

  1513. 12,

  1514. the prophet

  1515. Amos.

  1516. And Amos

  1517. is speaking

  1518. of a time

  1519. when God

  1520. would include

  1521. the Gentiles

  1522. called by

  1523. his name.

  1524. If you

  1525. were called

  1526. by God's

  1527. name,

  1528. it implies

  1529. relationship.

  1530. It implies

  1531. salvation.

  1532. And he's

  1533. saying that

  1534. the Gentiles

  1535. will be

  1536. included

  1537. in the

  1538. people of

  1539. God.

  1540. They will

  1541. be included

  1542. in the

  1543. rebuilding

  1544. of the

  1545. house of

  1546. David.

  1547. Pretty

  1548. awesome.

  1549. So this

  1550. was foretold.

  1551. So he

  1552. kind of

  1553. is saying,

  1554. you know,

  1555. I concur

  1556. with them,

  1557. but I

  1558. just want

  1559. you to

  1560. know that

  1561. God is

  1562. always

  1563. foretold

  1564. this.

  1565. He was

  1566. going to

  1567. do it,

  1568. and now

  1569. we're

  1570. seeing it.

  1571. It's

  1572. happening

  1573. right now.

  1574. So that's

  1575. the,

  1576. you know,

  1577. the discussion,

  1578. the debate.

  1579. Brings us

  1580. to the

  1581. third thing,

  1582. scene three,

  1583. is the

  1584. decree,

  1585. the decree,

  1586. or he

  1587. could say

  1588. the decision.

  1589. So what's

  1590. the outcome

  1591. here?

  1592. That's

  1593. verse 19

  1594. through 21.

  1595. So here's

  1596. the final

  1597. decree.

  1598. How much

  1599. of the

  1600. law,

  1601. the

  1602. mosaic

  1603. law,

  1604. does a

  1605. Gentile

  1606. believer

  1607. have to

  1608. obey to

  1609. be saved?

  1610. Does he

  1611. have to be

  1612. circumcised?

  1613. And the

  1614. answer is

  1615. a resounding

  1616. no.

  1617. Keeping

  1618. the

  1619. mosaic

  1620. law,

  1621. rituals,

  1622. sacrifices,

  1623. customs,

  1624. are not

  1625. required of

  1626. a Gentile

  1627. believer to

  1628. be a part

  1629. of the

  1630. church.

  1631. the only

  1632. part of

  1633. the law

  1634. that's

  1635. really

  1636. valid,

  1637. which we'll

  1638. get into

  1639. next week,

  1640. is the

  1641. moral law.

  1642. And the

  1643. next few

  1644. verses are

  1645. evidence of

  1646. that,

  1647. to keep

  1648. the moral

  1649. law.

  1650. But God

  1651. has clearly

  1652. chosen to

  1653. include people

  1654. of all

  1655. nations in

  1656. the church.

  1657. So the

  1658. old restrictions

  1659. that set

  1660. Israel apart

  1661. don't apply

  1662. anymore.

  1663. Only by

  1664. faith and

  1665. trusting in

  1666. Christ.

  1667. So I'm

  1668. just going to

  1669. read to you

  1670. Acts 13,

  1671. 28,

  1672. real fast.

  1673. It says,

  1674. Let it be

  1675. known to

  1676. you,

  1677. therefore,

  1678. brothers,

  1679. that through

  1680. this man

  1681. Jesus,

  1682. forgiveness

  1683. of sins

  1684. is proclaimed

  1685. to you,

  1686. and by

  1687. him everyone

  1688. who believes

  1689. or has

  1690. faith is

  1691. set free

  1692. from everything

  1693. from which

  1694. you could

  1695. not be

  1696. free by

  1697. the law

  1698. of Moses.

  1699. Couldn't

  1700. happen.

  1701. So,

  1702. James goes

  1703. on,

  1704. and he

  1705. proposes a

  1706. solution.

  1707. So,

  1708. we know

  1709. that Jews

  1710. and Gentiles

  1711. are going

  1712. to come

  1713. into contact

  1714. with each

  1715. other.

  1716. So what

  1717. do we

  1718. tell them?

  1719. How do we

  1720. move forward

  1721. without saying

  1722. you have to

  1723. keep the

  1724. whole Mosaic

  1725. law?

  1726. What do we

  1727. tell them?

  1728. How does

  1729. the mission

  1730. go forward?

  1731. And so,

  1732. that's what

  1733. we'll get

  1734. into a lot

  1735. more next

  1736. week.

  1737. But he

  1738. kind of has

  1739. a condition.

  1740. It's like,

  1741. this is what

  1742. we need to

  1743. do.

  1744. This is what

  1745. we need to

  1746. tell the

  1747. people out

  1748. there in

  1749. order to

  1750. interact with

  1751. one another.

  1752. other.

  1753. So he

  1754. humbly

  1755. offers a

  1756. suggestion

  1757. for the

  1758. fellowship of

  1759. Jews and

  1760. Gentiles.

  1761. And this

  1762. letter goes

  1763. out to all

  1764. the different

  1765. churches as

  1766. the gospel

  1767. goes forward.

  1768. So,

  1769. that's kind of

  1770. unpacking our

  1771. text.

  1772. So,

  1773. some application.

  1774. question.

  1775. Why should

  1776. you care?

  1777. Okay?

  1778. There's a few

  1779. things I have

  1780. for you.

  1781. But one is,

  1782. in a room

  1783. this size,

  1784. I can

  1785. guarantee

  1786. that there

  1787. are some

  1788. of you

  1789. here who

  1790. are still

  1791. convinced

  1792. that you

  1793. will be

  1794. made right

  1795. with God,

  1796. that you

  1797. will be

  1798. saved by

  1799. your own

  1800. goodness and

  1801. by your

  1802. own works.

  1803. You're

  1804. convinced,

  1805. like you're

  1806. even not

  1807. liking what

  1808. I'm saying

  1809. right now.

  1810. You really

  1811. are convinced

  1812. that as long

  1813. as your good

  1814. deeds outweigh

  1815. your bad

  1816. deeds,

  1817. or as long

  1818. as you go

  1819. to enough

  1820. religious

  1821. events,

  1822. that you

  1823. try to do

  1824. good to all

  1825. people,

  1826. that you're

  1827. moral,

  1828. that you

  1829. will be

  1830. okay before

  1831. God one

  1832. day.

  1833. If you've

  1834. been baptized,

  1835. if you take

  1836. the Lord's

  1837. Supper,

  1838. if you're

  1839. just a good

  1840. person,

  1841. then God

  1842. will accept

  1843. you.

  1844. No.

  1845. You need

  1846. to hear

  1847. this short

  1848. verse,

  1849. Romans 3,

    Romans 3:20

  1850. verse 20.

  1851. Listen to

  1852. this.

  1853. For by the

  1854. works of

  1855. the law,

  1856. you can

  1857. insert good

  1858. deeds or

  1859. goodness,

  1860. for by the

  1861. works of

  1862. the law,

  1863. no human

  1864. being will

  1865. be justified

  1866. in God's

  1867. sight.

  1868. You will

  1869. not be made

  1870. right with

  1871. God at

  1872. all by how

  1873. good you

  1874. are.

  1875. Because the

  1876. Bible says

  1877. you are

  1878. rotten.

  1879. Jesus says

  1880. you are a

  1881. slave to

  1882. sin.

  1883. You may

  1884. be good

  1885. compared to

  1886. a lot of

  1887. other people

  1888. in this

  1889. world,

  1890. but you're

  1891. not compared

  1892. to God.

  1893. God is

  1894. perfect.

  1895. He is

  1896. holy.

  1897. He is

  1898. flawless.

  1899. He can't

  1900. abide

  1901. evil.

  1902. Some of

  1903. you may

  1904. be in

  1905. the group

  1906. of the

  1907. Pharisees.

  1908. What

  1909. other

  1910. churchy

  1911. laws

  1912. have you

  1913. added to

  1914. the

  1915. gospel?

  1916. He can't

  1917. be a

  1918. Christian

  1919. if he

  1920. has a

  1921. beer.

  1922. He can't

  1923. be a

  1924. Christian

  1925. if he

  1926. has a

  1927. cigar.

  1928. He can't

  1929. be a

  1930. Christian

  1931. if he

  1932. doesn't

  1933. wear a

  1934. suit and

  1935. tie.

  1936. Or you

  1937. can flip it

  1938. the other

  1939. way around

  1940. very easily.

  1941. What other

  1942. laws have

  1943. you added?

  1944. It's very

  1945. dangerous.

  1946. The gospel

  1947. of Jesus

  1948. plus this

  1949. is not

  1950. the gospel.

  1951. It's

  1952. adulterated.

  1953. It's not

  1954. pure.

  1955. Some of

  1956. you are

  1957. the older

  1958. brother who

  1959. is angry

  1960. at the

  1961. father who

  1962. gives

  1963. salvation to

  1964. unworthy

  1965. prodigals.

  1966. does that

  1967. bother you

  1968. that God

  1969. gives

  1970. salvation

  1971. to

  1972. unworthy

  1973. people?

  1974. Do you

  1975. think,

  1976. oh no,

  1977. well,

  1978. I've been

  1979. good so I

  1980. deserve it?

  1981. You don't.

  1982. For by the

  1983. works of the

  1984. law,

  1985. no human

  1986. being will

  1987. be justified

  1988. in God's

  1989. sight.

  1990. Your

  1991. righteous deeds

  1992. are filthy

  1993. rags

  1994. before God.

  1995. So abandon

  1996. it.

  1997. Give it up.

  1998. Lay it all

  1999. down and

  2000. only come

  2001. to God

  2002. on God's

  2003. terms,

  2004. which is

  2005. by faith

  2006. in Christ

  2007. alone.

  2008. Some of

  2009. you,

  2010. kind of

  2011. stepping it

  2012. down a

  2013. tiny notch

  2014. from there,

  2015. some of

  2016. you may

  2017. have a

  2018. partial trust

  2019. in your

  2020. own goodness

  2021. and behavior,

  2022. just as a

  2023. little extra

  2024. security,

  2025. just in case

  2026. you fear

  2027. that your

  2028. faith is

  2029. not going

  2030. to be

  2031. enough.

  2032. I hope

  2033. it is,

  2034. but in

  2035. case it's

  2036. not,

  2037. I'm going

  2038. to go to

  2039. church every

  2040. Sunday.

  2041. I'm going

  2042. to feed

  2043. the poor.

  2044. I'm going

  2045. to be

  2046. nice to

  2047. everyone

  2048. around

  2049. me.

  2050. You may

  2051. have a

  2052. partial trust

  2053. in your

  2054. own goodness

  2055. and you're

  2056. afraid that

  2057. your just

  2058. plain,

  2059. naked faith

  2060. in Christ

  2061. is not

  2062. enough.

  2063. Turn to,

  2064. I finally

  2065. said it,

  2066. turn to

  2067. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  2068. chapter 2

  2069. verse 8.

  2070. I just want

  2071. to use a

  2072. very familiar

  2073. text.

  2074. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  2075. 2

  2076. verse 8.

  2077. This is

  2078. good for

  2079. everything

  2080. we've

  2081. said so

  2082. far,

  2083. but if

  2084. you're

  2085. afraid that

  2086. you're

  2087. afraid to

  2088. come before

  2089. the throne

  2090. of God

  2091. one day,

  2092. the just

  2093. faith

  2094. alone,

  2095. and you

  2096. feel like

  2097. you have

  2098. to have

  2099. some other

  2100. good stuff

  2101. piled on

  2102. it,

  2103. chapter 2

  2104. verse 8,

  2105. for by

  2106. grace you

  2107. have been

  2108. saved through

  2109. faith.

  2110. All right?

  2111. So let's

  2112. look at

  2113. this.

  2114. Grace,

  2115. why has

  2116. this happened?

  2117. Because of

  2118. the sheer

  2119. undeserved,

  2120. unmerited

  2121. favor of

  2122. God.

  2123. He decided

  2124. it out of

  2125. his own

  2126. goodness,

  2127. though you

  2128. don't deserve

  2129. it.

  2130. For by

  2131. grace you

  2132. have been

  2133. saved.

  2134. Saved from

  2135. what?

  2136. The wrath

  2137. of God,

  2138. the judgment

  2139. of God.

  2140. That's what

  2141. you've been

  2142. saved from.

  2143. And what

  2144. was that

  2145. instrument?

  2146. That connected

  2147. you to

  2148. the Savior?

  2149. Faith.

  2150. Faith.

  2151. Trust and

  2152. confidence in

  2153. the body

  2154. of Christ

  2155. that was

  2156. destroyed on

  2157. the cross.

  2158. And then

  2159. his resurrection.

  2160. For by

  2161. grace you

  2162. have been

  2163. saved through

  2164. faith.

  2165. And he

  2166. says,

  2167. and this

  2168. is not

  2169. your own

  2170. doing,

  2171. it is the

  2172. gift of

  2173. God,

  2174. not a

  2175. result of

  2176. works,

  2177. so that

  2178. no one

  2179. may boast.

  2180. So if

  2181. you think

  2182. that your

  2183. works are

  2184. what saves

  2185. you and

  2186. makes you

  2187. right before

  2188. God,

  2189. you could

  2190. boast before

  2191. God like,

  2192. look how

  2193. good I

  2194. did,

  2195. look how

  2196. terrible

  2197. this guy

  2198. did.

  2199. I have

  2200. more than

  2201. he did,

  2202. and God

  2203. says that

  2204. he will

  2205. not share

  2206. his glory

  2207. with any

  2208. of you.

  2209. He will

  2210. not.

  2211. He is the

  2212. only Savior.

  2213. He's giving

  2214. you no

  2215. grounds to

  2216. boast.

  2217. Right?

  2218. So where

  2219. does good

  2220. works come

  2221. in?

  2222. Verse 10,

  2223. for we

  2224. are his

  2225. workmanship,

  2226. created in

  2227. Christ Jesus

  2228. for good

  2229. works,

  2230. which God

  2231. prepared

  2232. beforehand

  2233. that we

  2234. should walk

  2235. in them.

  2236. So that

  2237. is a

  2238. purpose that

  2239. we do

  2240. as believers.

  2241. We do

  2242. good works

  2243. out of an

  2244. overflow of

  2245. our thankfulness

  2246. and goodness

  2247. towards God,

  2248. not because

  2249. it saves us.

  2250. He just

  2251. says it's

  2252. not a

  2253. result of

  2254. this.

  2255. true faith,

  2256. true belief,

  2257. is not

  2258. just,

  2259. oh yeah,

  2260. I know

  2261. that.

  2262. I get

  2263. it.

  2264. It's such

  2265. a deeply

  2266. hearted

  2267. conviction

  2268. that it

  2269. changes how

  2270. you live.

  2271. It's not

  2272. just,

  2273. I ascend

  2274. to this

  2275. and I

  2276. understand

  2277. it.

  2278. I believe

  2279. this so

  2280. deep in

  2281. my soul

  2282. that it's

  2283. going to

  2284. affect how

  2285. I live

  2286. out here.

  2287. That's

  2288. what real

  2289. faith is.

  2290. That's

  2291. how the

  2292. Bible uses

  2293. the term.

  2294. Some of

  2295. you are

  2296. timid and

  2297. confused.

  2298. You don't

  2299. really know

  2300. what to

  2301. kind of

  2302. think of

  2303. all this.

  2304. But if

  2305. you've been

  2306. told that

  2307. your faith

  2308. in Christ

  2309. alone isn't

  2310. enough,

  2311. that you

  2312. just feel

  2313. the weight

  2314. of your

  2315. sin,

  2316. you're like,

  2317. I can't

  2318. be made

  2319. right with

  2320. God.

  2321. I stink

  2322. at this.

  2323. I break

  2324. the rules

  2325. all the

  2326. time.

  2327. I break

  2328. my own

  2329. rules.

  2330. I can't

  2331. much less

  2332. keep God's

  2333. rules.

  2334. And you

  2335. feel that

  2336. burden,

  2337. that yoke

  2338. crushing

  2339. you down.

  2340. I can't

  2341. do it.

  2342. Well,

  2343. let it

  2344. go.

  2345. And simply

  2346. place faith

  2347. in Christ.

  2348. When Peter

  2349. calls the

  2350. law a yoke,

  2351. he probably

  2352. is referring

  2353. to what

  2354. Jesus said

  2355. about it.

  2356. Turn to

  2357. Matthew 11.

  2358. It's the

  2359. last place

  2360. you've got to

  2361. turn to

  2362. Matthew 11.

  2363. Matthew 11,

    Matthew 11:28

  2364. verse 28.

  2365. And this

  2366. is what

  2367. Jesus is

  2368. referring to

  2369. when he

  2370. uses this

  2371. verse.

  2372. He's referring

  2373. to the

  2374. law.

  2375. So do you

  2376. feel that?

  2377. Do you feel

  2378. like you're

  2379. not good

  2380. enough?

  2381. That you're

  2382. being crushed

  2383. by trying

  2384. to live up

  2385. to God's

  2386. standard?

  2387. And you're

  2388. afraid to

  2389. face him

  2390. on the

  2391. judgment?

  2392. Well,

  2393. listen to

  2394. what Jesus

  2395. says.

  2396. Verse 28.

  2397. He says,

  2398. Come to

  2399. me,

  2400. all who

  2401. labor and

  2402. are heavy

  2403. laden,

  2404. and I

  2405. will give

  2406. you rest.

  2407. Take my

  2408. yoke upon

  2409. you and

  2410. learn from

  2411. me, for I

  2412. am gentle

  2413. and lowly

  2414. in heart,

  2415. and you

  2416. will find

  2417. rest for

  2418. your souls.

  2419. For my

  2420. yoke is

  2421. easy and

  2422. my burden

  2423. is light.

  2424. He's

  2425. saying,

  2426. give it

  2427. to me

  2428. and you

  2429. take mine

  2430. because I'm

  2431. the only

  2432. one that

  2433. can keep

  2434. the law

  2435. and I

  2436. kept it

  2437. perfectly.

  2438. Allow me

  2439. to take

  2440. that,

  2441. you,

  2442. and I

  2443. will give

  2444. you mine.

  2445. It's an

  2446. invitation.

  2447. God always

  2448. favors the

  2449. weak and

  2450. the despairing,

  2451. the burden.

  2452. Blessed are

  2453. the poor in

  2454. spirit.

  2455. Blessed are

  2456. those who

  2457. hunger and

  2458. thirst for

  2459. righteousness.

  2460. Those of

  2461. you who are

  2462. bankrupt

  2463. spiritually,

  2464. come to

  2465. Jesus and

  2466. he will

  2467. carry your

  2468. burden.

  2469. Okay?

  2470. So two

  2471. others.

  2472. There are

  2473. some of you

  2474. here who

  2475. are relying

  2476. on your

  2477. own goodness

  2478. and I'm

  2479. guilty of

  2480. this one.

  2481. Okay?

  2482. Some of

  2483. you who

  2484. are relying

  2485. on your

  2486. own goodness

  2487. to possibly

  2488. earn a

  2489. greater favor

  2490. with God.

  2491. Like you

  2492. know God

  2493. loves you.

  2494. You know

  2495. God has

  2496. saved you

  2497. by his

  2498. grace,

  2499. but you

  2500. just think,

  2501. you know,

  2502. if I'm

  2503. just a little

  2504. better than

  2505. the average

  2506. Christian,

  2507. if I just

  2508. try hard,

  2509. God will

  2510. give me a

  2511. little extra

  2512. favor,

  2513. a little

  2514. extra love.

  2515. I'll be the

  2516. favorite and

  2517. he'll give me

  2518. something I

  2519. really desire.

  2520. So do you

  2521. seek to

  2522. earn God's

  2523. approval through

  2524. your own

  2525. efforts?

  2526. And you

  2527. kind of said

  2528. to yourself,

  2529. I know he

  2530. loves me,

  2531. but if I

  2532. work extra

  2533. hard and

  2534. don't sin as

  2535. much as some

  2536. others do,

  2537. he'll love me

  2538. even more.

  2539. Or do you

  2540. rely on a

  2541. strict list of

  2542. do's and

  2543. don'ts to,

  2544. on the

  2545. daily flow

  2546. to gain

  2547. higher approval

  2548. from God?

  2549. Listen,

  2550. like,

  2551. if that's

  2552. how you

  2553. feel,

  2554. just hear

  2555. these words

  2556. echo in

  2557. your head.

  2558. Don't look

  2559. any further

  2560. than the

  2561. cross for

  2562. any evidence

  2563. that God

  2564. loves you.

  2565. If he's

  2566. given his

  2567. own son

  2568. for you,

  2569. if he's

  2570. given you

  2571. his son,

  2572. like,

  2573. what else

  2574. could he

  2575. give to

  2576. prove that

  2577. he loves

  2578. you?

  2579. And if

  2580. he gives

  2581. you something

  2582. good,

  2583. it's because

  2584. he's good,

  2585. not because

  2586. you deserve

  2587. it.

  2588. Jesus said,

  2589. if you

  2590. who are

  2591. evil,

  2592. give good

  2593. gifts to

  2594. your children,

  2595. how much

  2596. more will

  2597. your father

  2598. give you

  2599. all good

  2600. things,

  2601. right?

  2602. Trust in

  2603. his goodness.

  2604. Don't think

  2605. it's going to

  2606. gain you a

  2607. higher favor

  2608. with God.

  2609. And then,

  2610. if your

  2611. heart's kind

  2612. of right this

  2613. morning,

  2614. if mine

  2615. really hasn't

  2616. been,

  2617. in regard

  2618. to some

  2619. of this,

  2620. it's the

  2621. people here

  2622. who are

  2623. rejoicing in

  2624. the true

  2625. gospel and

  2626. the true

  2627. Savior.

  2628. You're at

  2629. that piece.

  2630. You've

  2631. said,

  2632. I boast

  2633. of nothing

  2634. I've done

  2635. before the

  2636. throne.

  2637. I only

  2638. have the

  2639. righteousness

  2640. of Christ

  2641. to come

  2642. before the

  2643. throne of

  2644. God on

  2645. the final

  2646. judgments.

  2647. I will

  2648. plead what

  2649. Jesus has

  2650. done and

  2651. not what I

  2652. have done

  2653. before the

  2654. throne one

  2655. day.

  2656. I will

  2657. trust in

  2658. his merits.

  2659. That's

  2660. the only

  2661. place to

  2662. be.

  2663. We have

  2664. to fight

  2665. to be

  2666. there even

  2667. as believers

  2668. because you're

  2669. going to be

  2670. convinced on

  2671. a daily

  2672. basis that

  2673. God's going

  2674. to love you

  2675. by how good

  2676. you are and

  2677. how much you

  2678. read your

  2679. Bible or how

  2680. much you pray

  2681. or anything.

  2682. You're going to

  2683. think,

  2684. I've done all

  2685. these things so

  2686. God must be

  2687. really pleased

  2688. with me today.

  2689. His love

  2690. doesn't go like

  2691. this.

  2692. It's steady.

  2693. It's constant.

  2694. He's faithful

  2695. to us.

  2696. So, next

  2697. week we're

  2698. going to

  2699. unpack this

  2700. peculiar

  2701. letter that

  2702. still applies

  2703. really for

  2704. us today.

  2705. And what

  2706. should we,

  2707. as most of

  2708. us Gentile

  2709. believers,

  2710. what should

  2711. we follow?

  2712. What should

  2713. we think

  2714. about moving

  2715. forward as

  2716. a church?

  2717. So, let's

  2718. trust in the

  2719. undeserved

  2720. favor of God

  2721. and his grace

  2722. alone, only in

  2723. the true

  2724. Savior.

  2725. And when

  2726. you close

  2727. your eyes

  2728. one day

  2729. and final

  2730. death, that's

  2731. where your

  2732. hope's got to

  2733. be.

  2734. Because you're

  2735. never going to

  2736. be good enough.

  2737. You're never

  2738. going to do

  2739. enough good.

  2740. Only in

  2741. Christ.

  2742. Just pray with

  2743. me.
