  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  2. Acts chapter 16, our text for this morning is verses 1-5.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  3. ! Before we read this morning's text, let me remind you where we are in Luke's second narrative.

  4. We've got the Gospel according to Luke, and then this book we call the Acts of the Apostles most often.

  5. I like to call it the Acts of the Risen Jesus Christ.

  6. We see that Jesus is working by the agency of the Holy Spirit in the lives of His disciples for the expansion of His church.

  7. Beloved, this is our history. It's a wonderful thing to get to spend such a vast amount of time.

  8. It's going to be probably, I think, about two years that we'll be in the book of Acts.

  9. Considering this early church, these are our brethren.

  10. At the end of chapter 14, we saw Paul and Barnabas complete their first missionary journey,

  11. returning to Antioch, where they were commissioned in the first place.

  12. At the beginning of chapter 15, false teaching reaches Antioch.

  13. People travel to Antioch, preaching this, Acts chapter 15, verse 1,

    Acts 15:1

  14. But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers,

  15. Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.

  16. So, Paul and Barnabas are sent to Jerusalem to seek clarity from the other apostles.

  17. These teachers, these false teachers have traveled from that region,

  18. So they go to make sure that they haven't erred in teaching that you must not be circumcised to be saved.

  19. So they're sent to Jerusalem to seek clarity.

  20. At what's often called the Jerusalem Council,

  21. the apostles and elders in Jerusalem decidedly affirm

  22. that all that is necessary for salvation is faith in Jesus.

  23. And then they give some further instruction in the form of a letter.

  24. And Clay came and spoke to us both about the decision they made,

  25. as well as the letter and the deliverance of it.

  26. You can see in Acts chapter 15, verse 29, the further instruction.

    Acts 15:29

  27. Abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols,

  28. and from blood, and from what has been strangled,

  29. and from sexual immorality.

  30. And so we find in this further instruction,

  31. three cultural considerations.

  32. These were matters of offense to the Jews.

  33. Food sacrificed to idols, and blood, and from animals that had been strangled.

  34. These would have been things that would have been offensive to a Jewish culture.

  35. So three cultural considerations, and one moral obligation,

  36. that is abstain from sexual immorality.

  37. So this is the decision that's been made.

  38. The letter goes back to Antioch,

  39. and after some time,

  40. Paul and Barnabas decide to retrace their first missionary route

  41. to check on the churches established on their first journey.

  42. We see that at the very end of chapter 15, beginning in verse 36.

  43. But conflict, in the form of a sharp disagreement,

  44. arises between them about whether or not to take John Mark along with them,

  45. which results in their parting ways.

  46. Now we noted last week that the good result of this,

  47. what I would suggest, sinful conflict,

  48. was missionary multiplication.

  49. The one band of missionaries

  50. has now turned into two bands of missionaries

  51. as Barnabas goes west with John Mark

  52. to the island of Cyprus,

  53. and Paul heads north with Silas.

  54. Now Silas was one of the leaders of the church in Jerusalem.

  55. He was both a Jew and a Roman citizen,

  56. so like Paul,

  57. he had the protection of the empire

  58. and could get entrance into the Jewish synagogues.

  59. Silas was a perfect partner for Paul's second missionary journey,

  60. but Paul, and I'm going to guess,

  61. say likely due to his division with Barnabas,

  62. now seems to have a mind toward multiplication.

  63. What happens when Silas and I part ways?

  64. What would come of that?

  65. So he seems to have a mind now toward multiplication.

  66. And so we see at the beginning of Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16:1–5

  67. verses 1 through 5,

  68. this bridge in our story.

  69. Beloved,

  70. this is God's Word to us.

  71. It was written for His glory and our good.

  72. We would all do well to listen to it

  73. in order to believe its promises

  74. and obey its commands.

  75. His promises are sure and His commands are good.

  76. Beginning in verse 1,

  77. Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra.

  78. A disciple was there named Timothy,

  79. the son of a Jewish woman

  80. who was a believer,

  81. but his father was a Greek.

  82. He was well spoken of by the brothers

  83. at Lystra and Iconium.

  84. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him,

  85. and he took him and circusized him

  86. because of the Jews who were in those places,

  87. for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

  88. As they went on their way through the cities,

  89. they delivered to them for observance

  90. the decisions that had been reached

  91. by the apostles and elders

  92. who were in Jerusalem.

  93. So the churches were strengthened in the faith,

  94. and they increased in numbers daily.

  95. Now this morning, I just have two points.

  96. One, the first point we'll spend some time on,

  97. and the second will be very brief.

  98. The two points are,

  99. number one,

  100. the freedom to circumcise Timothy.

  101. And number two,

  102. the effect of circumcising Timothy.

  103. But before we get to those two points,

  104. let's first spend a little time

  105. on some textual explanations.

  106. We'll look at the first two verses.

  107. Now for your sake,

  108. on the back of the bulletin,

  109. I asked Andy this week

  110. to put a map of Paul's

  111. second missionary journey.

  112. I don't know if you're like me,

  113. but it really helps me

  114. to be able to wrap my mind

  115. a bit around what's going on.

  116. I asked Andy to do this yesterday,

  117. and he did a great job

  118. of finding a map

  119. that the kids would enjoy coloring.

  120. We think that it's in Italian.

  121. So if you're looking at the odd spellings

  122. across the map,

  123. I think you're smart enough

  124. to figure out the locations,

  125. but we're pretty sure

  126. it's an Italian map

  127. of these locations,

  128. which is why you may see

  129. some spellings a tad different,

  130. like check out Jerusalem

  131. down at the bottom.

  132. Gerusalemme is what it looks like.

  133. So anyway,

  134. that's what's happening here.

  135. So you've got,

  136. the island of Cyprus

  137. is not labeled on this map,

  138. but it's out there

  139. just up in that far right-hand corner,

  140. high right-hand corner

  141. of the Mediterranean Sea.

  142. This is the place

  143. that Barnabas was from.

  144. This is the place

  145. that the missionary journey

  146. of Paul and Barnabas

  147. started out.

  148. They crossed over

  149. and went to the island of Cyprus.

  150. And then from the western coast of Cyprus

  151. headed north

  152. into the region

  153. where they finally

  154. ended their missionary journey

  155. and circled back down and around.

  156. This time, though,

  157. Barnabas heads to Cyprus.

  158. Paul and Silas head north

  159. and then hook a hard left

  160. to head their way

  161. to Derbe and Lystra.

  162. So that gives you some idea

  163. of where they are.

  164. If you think of the first missionary journey

  165. as going clockwise,

  166. they're going now counterclockwise.

  167. back the other way.

  168. And it's possible,

  169. it's probable,

  170. they do this

  171. so that they could pick up Timothy.

  172. Paul now having this mind

  173. toward multiplication,

  174. picking up Timothy

  175. to accompany them

  176. on the rest of that journey.

  177. We find out a little bit

  178. about Timothy in this text.

  179. Timothy was a believer in Christ.

  180. The text says he was a disciple.

  181. In the Greek term for disciple,

  182. there simply means believer.

  183. In fact, other places in the text.

  184. Referring to his mother,

  185. believer is the exact same Greek word.

  186. Likely converted

  187. on Paul and Barnabas' first trip.

  188. So when they traveled

  189. into this region before,

  190. it's been a couple of years now,

  191. it was likely when he was converted.

  192. We don't know that for sure.

  193. Certainly Christian ministry

  194. has been going on

  195. in this community

  196. since Paul and Barnabas' departure.

  197. But it's likely

  198. that that was the case

  199. because in Paul's first letter to Timothy,

  200. he writes,

  201. 1 Timothy 1-2,

  202. to Timothy,

  203. my true child in the faith.

  204. We can't know for sure

  205. that that's the case.

  206. Certainly Paul played

  207. a very fatherly role in his life.

  208. But it's likely

  209. that he was the one

  210. that proclaimed the gospel to him

  211. and Timothy came into the faith family

  212. as a result of his tutelage of him.

  213. We also find out

  214. that Timothy's mother

  215. was a believer.

  216. Her name was Eunice.

  217. We see in our text

  218. the son of a Jewish woman

  219. who was a believer.

  220. We find out in 2 Timothy 1-5,

  221. her name is Eunice,

  222. as well as the fact

  223. that his grandmother

  224. was also a believer.

  225. 2 Timothy 1-5,

  226. Paul writes,

  227. I am reminded

  228. of your sincere faith,

  229. a faith that dwelt first

  230. in your grandmother Lois

  231. and in your mother Eunice,

  232. and now I am sure

  233. dwells in you as well.

  234. We also find out

  235. that his father

  236. was not a believer in Christ

  237. and that he was likely dead.

  238. So we get a little phrase

  239. in verse 1,

  240. but his father was a Greek.

  241. The conjunction, but,

  242. refers both to Eunice's ethnicity

  243. and her faith.

  244. So you could read it this way,

  245. but his father was not a believer

  246. and his father was not a Jew.

  247. It refers to both things.

  248. Not a believer

  249. and not a Jew.

  250. His father was a Greek.

  251. And the imperfect form

  252. of the verb was,

  253. rather than the present tense

  254. of the verb,

  255. suggests that he was dead.

  256. He's already moved off the scene.

  257. So Timothy, as a young man,

  258. does not have a father,

  259. and Paul, in some sense,

  260. adopts him

  261. and takes him on this journey.

  262. We also find out

  263. in verse 2

  264. that Timothy

  265. was faithful.

  266. Verse 2 says,

  267. he was well spoken of

  268. by the brothers

  269. at Lystra

  270. and Diconium.

  271. Luke records this for us

  272. in the specific way

  273. to say of the brothers,

  274. because the brothers

  275. are speaking well

  276. of a man

  277. because he's a brother,

  278. not because he was

  279. good at some particular skill.

  280. Like his bow staff skills

  281. were not excellent,

  282. and so he was spoken

  283. well of.

  284. But he was a man

  285. full of faith.

  286. The brothers

  287. considered him faithful.

  288. And because

  289. Timothy's father

  290. was Greek,

  291. he had not allowed

  292. Timothy to be circumcised.

  293. It's likely that his mom

  294. and his grandmother

  295. would have wanted him

  296. to be circumcised,

  297. but his father

  298. prevented this

  299. from happening,

  300. which brings us

  301. to our first point

  302. from our text

  303. this morning.

  304. Number one,

  305. the freedom

  306. to circumcise

  307. Timothy.

  308. So we see in verse 3,

  309. Paul wanted Timothy

  310. to go along with him,

  311. this faithful follower

  312. of Jesus,

  313. to go along with him.

  314. And he takes him

  315. and he circumcises him.

  316. It seems that Paul

  317. actually performs

  318. a circumcision,

  319. although we can't

  320. be too sure.

  321. He takes him

  322. and he circumcises him

  323. because of the Jews

  324. who were in those places,

  325. for they all knew

  326. that his father

  327. was a Greek.

  328. That is,

  329. they all knew

  330. that he was not

  331. circumcised.

  332. So these Jews

  333. would have been aware

  334. of this fact

  335. that he had not

  336. been circumcised

  337. on the basis

  338. of who his father was.

  339. And this fact

  340. is what causes Paul

  341. to circumcise him.

  342. But why?

  343. Why?

  344. Paul was an ardent

  345. defender

  346. of salvation

  347. by grace alone,

  348. through faith alone,

  349. in Christ alone.

  350. He stood firm on that.

  351. There were no works.

  352. His whole trip

  353. to Jerusalem,

  354. the whole Jerusalem

  355. council thing

  356. was about him

  357. affirming what he

  358. had been teaching

  359. Gentile believers.

  360. Listen to some of his words

  361. to the Galatian believers.

  362. This is a group,

  363. a church,

  364. who were beginning

  365. to believe the false

  366. teaching that they

  367. must be circumcised

  368. to be saved.

  369. This is some years later

  370. when Paul writes

  371. his letter to the

  372. Galatian church.

  373. Join me, if you will,

  374. in the book of Galatians.

  375. I think you'll appreciate

  376. being there

  377. and seeing these texts.

  378. Remembering that Paul

  379. was a defender

  380. of salvation

  381. by grace alone,

  382. through faith alone,

  383. in Christ alone.

  384. And the question before us is,

  385. so why did he

  386. circumcise

  387. Timothy?

  388. So let's start

  389. in Galatians chapter 2,

    Galatians 2:15

  390. verses 15 and 16.

  391. So the scene is,

  392. what was often called

  393. the Judaizers,

  394. have come into

  395. the Galatian church

  396. and they've led

  397. them astray

  398. saying,

  399. oh no, no,

  400. believing in Jesus

  401. is good,

  402. but you must also

  403. be circumcised

  404. to be saved.

  405. And Paul writes,

  406. we ourselves

  407. are Jews

  408. by birth

  409. and not

  410. Gentile sinners.

  411. Yet we know

  412. that a person

  413. is not justified,

  414. found right before God,

  415. by works of the law,

  416. but through

  417. faith in Jesus Christ.

  418. So,

  419. we also,

  420. right,

  421. these people

  422. being Jews

  423. by birth,

  424. we also have

  425. believed in

  426. Christ Jesus

  427. in order

  428. to be justified

  429. by faith in Christ

  430. and not

  431. by works

  432. of the law.

  433. Because by works

  434. of the law,

  435. no one

  436. will be

  437. justified,

  438. right?

  439. So justification

  440. comes

  441. by grace alone

  442. through faith alone

  443. in Jesus Christ

  444. alone.

  445. Further,

  446. Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3:1–3

  447. verses 1 through 3.

  448. Paul writes,

  449. oh foolish Galatians,

  450. who has bewitched you?

  451. It was before your eyes

  452. that Jesus Christ

  453. was publicly

  454. portrayed

  455. as crucified.

  456. Let me ask you

  457. only this.

  458. Did you receive

  459. the Spirit

  460. by works

  461. of the law

  462. or by hearing

  463. with faith?

  464. Are you so foolish?

  465. Having begun

  466. by the Spirit,

  467. are you now

  468. being perfected

  469. by the flesh?

  470. Again,

  471. this defense

  472. against them

  473. altering their

  474. physical being

  475. to be found

  476. right before God.

  477. Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5:1

  478. verse 1.

  479. Paul writes,

  480. for freedom

  481. Christ has set us free.

  482. Stand firm,

  483. therefore,

  484. and do not

  485. submit again

  486. to a yoke

  487. of slavery.

  488. Strong language,

  489. right?

  490. It's for freedom

  491. that Christ

  492. has set us free.

  493. Stand firm,

  494. therefore.

  495. He's saying

  496. refuse

  497. to be circumcised

  498. because if you are

  499. thinking that you'll be saved,

  500. you're submitting yourself

  501. again

  502. to a yoke

  503. of slavery.

  504. Paul

  505. had gone so far

  506. as refusing

  507. to have Titus

  508. circumcised.

  509. If you turn back

  510. a few pages now

  511. to Galatians chapter 2,

    Galatians 2:1

  512. verse 1.

  513. Paul is telling

  514. the story

  515. of traveling

  516. to Jerusalem,

  517. to the Jerusalem council

  518. that we have learned

  519. about in chapter 15.

  520. So he's now,

  521. many years later,

  522. he's recounting

  523. what he did

  524. that's recorded

  525. by Luke

  526. in Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  527. So Galatians chapter 2,

    Galatians 2:1–5

  528. verses 1 through 5,

  529. he says,

  530. Then after 14 years

  531. I went up again

  532. to Jerusalem

  533. with Barnabas,

  534. taking Titus

  535. along with me.

  536. That's that trip

  537. beginning of chapter 15.

  538. I went up

  539. because of a revelation

  540. and set before them,

  541. though privately

  542. before those

  543. who seemed influential,

  544. the gospel

  545. that I proclaim

  546. among the Gentiles

  547. in order to make sure

  548. I was not running

  549. or had not run

  550. in vain.

  551. So I talked about that

  552. briefly a minute ago.

  553. He's preaching

  554. a gospel

  555. of justification

  556. or salvation

  557. by grace alone

  558. through faith alone

  559. in Christ alone.

  560. This is what he's preaching.

  561. And because these

  562. Judaizers have come

  563. from Judea

  564. and made their way

  565. to Antioch,

  566. he wants to make sure

  567. that the message

  568. that they're preaching

  569. didn't come from

  570. the apostles

  571. and the elders

  572. in Jerusalem.

  573. He wants to go

  574. affirm that.

  575. Have I screwed this up?

  576. Am I preaching

  577. the right and true

  578. gospel?

  579. The answer to that

  580. is yes.

  581. But verse 3,

  582. he says,

  583. But even Titus,

  584. who was with me,

  585. was not forced

  586. to be circumcised,

  587. though he was

  588. a Greek.

  589. So Titus,

  590. they refused

  591. to circumcise Titus.

  592. In one case

  593. with Timothy,

  594. Timothy is circumcised.

  595. In the other case,

  596. Titus is withheld

  597. from him.

  598. He was not forced

  599. to be circumcised.

  600. Verse 4,

  601. Yet because a false

  602. brother secretly

  603. brought in,

  604. who slipped in

  605. to spy out

  606. our freedom

  607. that we have

  608. in Christ Jesus

  609. so that they might

  610. bring us into slavery,

  611. to them we did not

  612. yield in submission

  613. even for a moment

  614. so that the truth

  615. of the gospel

  616. might be preserved

  617. for you.

  618. So men have come in

  619. and they're teaching,

  620. you must be circumcised

  621. to be saved.

  622. Works of the law

  623. justify you

  624. before God.

  625. And Paul,

  626. I'm assuming

  627. Barnabas and Titus

  628. and many others

  629. in the church,

  630. refused for Titus

  631. to be circumcised.

  632. They stood their ground.

  633. They did the very thing

  634. that he encouraged

  635. them to do

  636. in Galatians 5.1.

  637. Stand firm,

  638. therefore,

  639. and do not submit

  640. again to a yoke

  641. of slavery.

  642. So that's the scene.

  643. This is that Paul.

  644. So why

  645. did Paul

  646. have Timothy

  647. circumcised?

  648. Wouldn't it have been

  649. better to prove

  650. that salvation

  651. is by grace alone,

  652. through faith alone,

  653. and Christ alone

  654. by making Timothy

  655. a case study?

  656. He could have

  657. traveled the region

  658. and said,

  659. point proven.

  660. This is Timothy.

  661. You may not know it,

  662. but he's not circumcised.

  663. To make the very case?

  664. Paul doesn't seem

  665. to think so.

  666. And so we find

  667. an example here

  668. of Christian liberty

  669. being exercised

  670. properly.

  671. Freedom in Christ

  672. properly being exercised.

  673. Timothy

  674. was free

  675. not

  676. to be circumcised.

  677. But for the sake

  678. of the souls

  679. of Jews

  680. in the region,

  681. he was.

  682. False teachers

  683. would have had

  684. Titus circumcised

  685. for his salvation,

  686. and Paul refused

  687. such a thing.

  688. But for the unbelieving

  689. Jews

  690. of the region,

  691. Timothy's uncircumcision

  692. would have proven

  693. to be a barrier

  694. for the understanding

  695. of the gospel

  696. of grace.

  697. They wouldn't have

  698. even wanted to hear

  699. what they had to say

  700. traveling around

  701. with a man

  702. whose father

  703. was a Greek

  704. who was uncircumcised.

  705. It would have been

  706. a stumbling block

  707. for them

  708. to hear

  709. the gospel

  710. of Christ.

  711. While Paul

  712. was sent

  713. by God

  714. as the apostle

  715. to the Gentiles,

  716. he maintained

  717. in the midst

  718. of all of his

  719. missionary journeying,

  720. he maintained

  721. an unwavering

  722. commitment

  723. to the Jewish

  724. people.

  725. Listen to his words

  726. from Romans 9,

    Romans 9:1–3

  727. verses 1-3.

  728. I am speaking

  729. the truth in Christ.

  730. I am not lying.

  731. My conscience

  732. bears me witness

  733. in the Holy Spirit.

  734. It's great,

  735. like he's loading

  736. that up, right?

  737. I'm speaking

  738. the truth in Christ.

  739. I am not lying.

  740. My conscience

  741. bears me witness

  742. in the Holy Spirit.

  743. He's saying,

  744. I am telling you

  745. the truth,

  746. verse 2,

  747. that I have great sorrow

  748. and unceasing anguish

  749. in my heart,

  750. for I could wish

  751. that I myself

  752. were accursed

  753. and cut off

  754. from Christ

  755. for the sake

  756. of my brothers,

  757. my kinsmen,

  758. according to the flesh.

  759. Oh, beloved,

  760. that we would have

  761. a heart for people

  762. like that.

  763. That we would gladly

  764. give up our position

  765. in the kingdom

  766. that others

  767. might have

  768. a standing,

  769. a right standing

  770. with the Lord.

  771. So,

  772. Timothy

  773. exercises his freedom

  774. by giving up

  775. a little thing

  776. for the sake

  777. of others.

  778. By giving up

  779. a little thing

  780. for the sake

  781. of others.

  782. Now,

  783. a little thing,

  784. of course I'm speaking

  785. relatively here.

  786. It feels pretty weighty

  787. to me,

  788. what Timothy

  789. was willing

  790. to do

  791. for the sake

  792. of others.

  793. And so,

  794. I want to just

  795. take you to an

  796. Old Testament example

  797. of this

  798. so that we don't

  799. have to talk

  800. about the anatomy

  801. of what happened,

  802. but to show you

  803. the extent

  804. of what happened.

  805. So,

  806. turn to Genesis

    Genesis 34 chapter mention

  807. chapter 34.

  808. This is one of my

  809. favorite Old Testament

  810. Bible stories.

  811. I can't tell you

  812. all that it means

  813. because I don't

  814. know.

  815. But this one

  816. rivals the

  817. she-bears,

  818. if you're familiar

  819. with the

  820. she-bear story.

  821. Two things

  822. I want you to get

  823. from this.

  824. I am actually

  825. going to read it

  826. because it's always

  827. good when there's

  828. a long story

  829. to summarize it.

  830. I think it's

  831. best summarized here.

  832. I want you to

  833. appreciate the

  834. Old Testament.

  835. If you're not

  836. an Old Testament

  837. reader,

  838. I hope you just

  839. go,

  840. whoa,

  841. what?

  842. And you appreciate

  843. that,

  844. so it's like a

  845. side hope

  846. for this.

  847. But then I also

  848. want you to know

  849. that what Timothy

  850. did as an adult

  851. man was kind

  852. of a big deal.

  853. So,

  854. beginning in

  855. verse 1

  856. of chapter 34,

  857. now Dinah,

  858. the daughter of

  859. Leah,

  860. whom she had

  861. borne to Jacob,

  862. went out to see

  863. the women of

  864. the land.

  865. And when Shechem,

  866. the son of Hamor,

  867. the Hivite,

  868. the prince of the

  869. land,

  870. saw her,

  871. he seized her

  872. and lay with her

  873. and humiliated her.

  874. He raped her.

  875. Verse 3,

  876. And his soul was

  877. drawn to Dinah,

  878. the daughter of

  879. Jacob.

  880. He loved the

  881. young woman and

  882. spoke tenderly to

  883. her.

  884. So Shechem spoke

  885. to his father,

  886. Hamor,

  887. saying,

  888. Get me this girl

  889. for my wife.

  890. Now Jacob heard

  891. that he had

  892. defiled his

  893. daughter Dinah,

  894. but his sons

  895. were with his

  896. livestock in the

  897. field,

  898. so Jacob held

  899. his peace

  900. until they came.

  901. Adult sons.

  902. And Hamor,

  903. the father of

  904. Shechem,

  905. went out to

  906. Jacob to speak

  907. with him.

  908. The sons of

  909. Jacob had come

  910. in from the

  911. field as soon

  912. as they heard

  913. of it,

  914. and the men

  915. were indignant

  916. and very angry

  917. because he had

  918. done an outrageous

  919. thing in Israel

  920. by lying with

  921. Jacob's daughter,

  922. for such a

  923. thing must not

  924. be done.

  925. But Hamor spoke

  926. with him,

  927. saying,

  928. The soul of my

  929. son Shechem

  930. longs for your

  931. daughter.

  932. Please give her

  933. to him to be

  934. his wife.

  935. Make marriages

  936. with us.

  937. Give your

  938. daughters to us

  939. and take our

  940. daughters for

  941. yourselves.

  942. You shall dwell

  943. with us and the

  944. land shall be

  945. open to you.

  946. Shechem also

  947. said to her

  948. father and to

  949. her brothers,

  950. Let me find

  951. favor in your

  952. eyes and

  953. whatever you

  954. say to me

  955. I will give.

  956. Ask me for

  957. as great a

  958. bride price as

  959. gift as you

  960. will and I

  961. will give you

  962. whatever you

  963. say to me.

  964. Only give me

  965. the young

  966. woman to be

  967. my wife.

  968. The sons of

  969. Jacob answered

  970. Shechem and

  971. his father

  972. Hamor deceitfully

  973. because he had

  974. defiled their

  975. sister Dinah.

  976. This is where

  977. it gets really

  978. good.

  979. They said to

  980. them,

  981. We cannot do

  982. this thing to

  983. give you our

  984. sister to one

  985. who is uncircumcised

  986. for that would be

  987. a disgrace to us.

  988. Only on this

  989. condition will we

  990. agree with you

  991. that you will

  992. become as we

  993. are by every

  994. male among you

  995. being circumcised.

  996. Then we will

  997. give our

  998. daughters to you

  999. and we will

  1000. take your

  1001. daughters to

  1002. ourselves.

  1003. We will dwell

  1004. with you and

  1005. become one

  1006. people.

  1007. But if you

  1008. will not listen

  1009. to us and

  1010. be circumcised,

  1011. we will take

  1012. our daughter and

  1013. we will be

  1014. gone.

  1015. So they asked

  1016. the entire

  1017. city, like

  1018. Hamor and

  1019. his son rule

  1020. over to be

  1021. circumcised,

  1022. all the males.

  1023. All right,

  1024. verse 18.

  1025. Their words

  1026. pleased Hamor and

  1027. Hamor's son

  1028. Shechem.

  1029. And the

  1030. young man did

  1031. not delay to

  1032. do the thing

  1033. because he was

  1034. delighted.

  1035. I love that,

  1036. to do the

  1037. thing, because

  1038. he delighted in

  1039. Jacob's daughter.

  1040. Now he was the

  1041. most honored of

  1042. all his father's

  1043. house.

  1044. So Hamor and

  1045. his son Shechem

  1046. came to the

  1047. gate of their

  1048. city and spoke

  1049. to the men of

  1050. their city,

  1051. saying,

  1052. These men are

  1053. at peace with

  1054. us.

  1055. Let them dwell

  1056. in the land

  1057. and trade in

  1058. it.

  1059. For behold,

  1060. the land is

  1061. large enough for

  1062. them.

  1063. Let us take

  1064. their daughters

  1065. as wives and

  1066. let us give

  1067. them our

  1068. daughters.

  1069. Only on this

  1070. condition will the

  1071. men agree to

  1072. dwell with us

  1073. to become one

  1074. people, when

  1075. every male among

  1076. us is circumcised

  1077. as they are

  1078. circumcised.

  1079. Will not their

  1080. livestock, their

  1081. property, and all

  1082. their beasts be

  1083. ours?

  1084. Only let us agree

  1085. with them and

  1086. they will dwell

  1087. with us.

  1088. And all who

  1089. went out of the

  1090. gate of his

  1091. city listened to

  1092. Hamor and his

  1093. son Shechem, and

  1094. every male was

  1095. circumcised, all

  1096. who went out of

  1097. the gate of his

  1098. city.

  1099. And here's the

  1100. punchline.

  1101. On the third

  1102. day, when they

  1103. were sore, two

  1104. of the sons of

  1105. Jacob, Simeon and

  1106. Levi, Dinah's

  1107. brothers, took

  1108. their swords and

  1109. came against the

  1110. city while it

  1111. felt secure and

  1112. killed all the

  1113. males.

  1114. They killed

  1115. Hamor and his

  1116. son Shechem with

  1117. a sword and took

  1118. Dinah out of

  1119. Shechem's house and

  1120. went away.

  1121. I don't know

  1122. what it means.

  1123. But, a bunch of

  1124. men who had been

  1125. circumcised, adult

  1126. men who had been

  1127. circumcised, were

  1128. slain by two guys.

  1129. It could not have

  1130. been pleasant.

  1131. So Timothy gives

  1132. this up for the

  1133. sake of others.

  1134. Are you with me?

  1135. Like, Paul says,

1136. hey, I want you to

  1137. come with me, but

  1138. there's this thing I

  1139. need you to do.

  1140. And Timothy lays

  1141. that down.

  1142. For the sake of

  1143. others.

  1144. He was free to

  1145. say no.

  1146. He could have

  1147. refused.

  1148. The gospel allowed

  1149. that of him.

  1150. But he was

  1151. willing to do

  1152. this for others.

  1153. Beloved, the

  1154. grace of God

  1155. to us is free,

  1156. or else it would

  1157. not be grace at

  1158. all.

  1159. But the call to

  1160. follow Christ is a

  1161. costly call.

  1162. He requires all

  1163. of us.

  1164. Every bit of

  1165. us.

  1166. Timothy's

  1167. sacrifice was a

  1168. little thing.

  1169. But it was

  1170. only little in

  1171. comparison to the

  1172. eternal state of

  1173. unbelieving Jews.

  1174. Paul makes

  1175. sacrifice as well

  1176. in the same and

  1177. many various

  1178. ways.

  1179. You can read

  1180. about this in

  1181. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9:19–22

  1182. chapter 9

  1183. verses 19

  1184. through 22.

  1185. Paul said

  1186. this,

  1187. verse 19

  1188. for though I

  1189. am free from

  1190. all, I have

  1191. made myself a

  1192. servant to

  1193. all that I

  1194. might win more

  1195. of them.

  1196. You see what he's

  1197. saying?

  1198. Even though the

  1199. regulations that

  1200. people want to

  1201. place on me, the

  1202. rules that they

  1203. want to follow, I'm

  1204. free from those

  1205. things, but yet I

  1206. submit myself to

  1207. them that I might

  1208. win more of

  1209. them.

  1210. Verse 20,

  1211. to the Jews I

  1212. became as a

  1213. Jew in order to

  1214. win Jews.

  1215. To those under

  1216. the law I

  1217. became as one

  1218. under the law,

  1219. though not being

  1220. myself under the

  1221. law, that I

  1222. might win those

  1223. under the law.

  1224. To those outside

  1225. the law I became

  1226. as one outside

  1227. the law, not

  1228. being outside the

  1229. law of God, but

  1230. under the law

  1231. of Christ, that I

  1232. might win those

  1233. outside the law.

  1234. to the weak I

  1235. became weak, that

  1236. I might win the

  1237. weak.

  1238. I become all

  1239. things to all

  1240. people, that by

  1241. all means I

  1242. might save some.

  1243. So what Paul is

  1244. saying is for the

  1245. sake of weaker

  1246. faith people, we

  1247. make decisions, we

  1248. practice our

  1249. Christian liberty in

  1250. a way that's good

  1251. for their soul.

  1252. There are many

  1253. examples.

  1254. You can go

  1255. almost an endless

  1256. list of gray

  1257. areas that we

  1258. have to navigate

  1259. as followers of

  1260. Jesus Christ.

  1261. I just want to

  1262. give you two in

  1263. brief.

  1264. The first one is

  1265. the matter of

  1266. alcohol.

  1267. Much talked about

  1268. in Southern

  1269. Baptist denomination.

  1270. There's always a

  1271. new article, there's

  1272. always some new

  1273. motion being

  1274. passed.

  1275. You almost can't

  1276. go to a Southern

  1277. Baptist meeting

  1278. without some talk

  1279. of just saying

  1280. no,

  1281. to alcohol.

  1282. alcohol.

  1283. The Bible doesn't

  1284. do that to us.

  1285. It doesn't do

  1286. that.

  1287. It doesn't place

1288. that as a law on

  1289. us.

  1290. So those of you

  1291. who are under

  1292. 21, this is not

  1293. permission to drink.

  1294. Obey the law of

  1295. our land.

1296. But for those of you

  1297. who are over, you

  1298. have the freedom to

  1299. drink.

  1300. Alcoholic beverages,

  1301. right?

  1302. Not to become drunk,

  1303. but to drink.

  1304. This is permissive.

  1305. And there are many

1306. people in our age that

  1307. in order to practice

  1308. their Christian liberty,

1309. make a real big deal

  1310. about a drinking

  1311. alcohol, right?

  1312. As if they're trying

  1313. to show how glorious

  1314. the gospel is because

  1315. they get to drink

  1316. lots of beer.

  1317. Ridiculous.

1318. And in fact, I think

1319. a lot of the strong

  1320. response within the

  1321. Southern Baptist

  1322. Convention against

  1323. alcohol is because

  1324. of those idiots.

  1325. I know someone who

  1326. has stated, and I

  1327. hope he's grown past

  1328. this, but that his

  1329. mission is to redeem

  1330. beer drinking.

  1331. What does that mean?

  1332. What does that even

  1333. mean redeem beer

  1334. drinking?

  1335. So we're given

  1336. permission, but oh,

  1337. we should be careful

  1338. about the how.

  1339. There are many people

1340. who will sit in rows

  1341. in our churches who

  1342. would be offended by

  1343. me even suggesting

  1344. that it's okay, who

  1345. would say, I can't

  1346. even listen to this

  1347. guy.

  1348. I'm sorry.

1349. All I know is to

  1350. preach the Bible.

  1351. But we ought not

  1352. rub things in other

  1353. people's faces because

  1354. we can.

  1355. You are practicing your

  1356. Christian liberty in not

  1357. drinking as well.

  1358. In deciding that a

  1359. circumstance is not the

  1360. best circumstance for

  1361. such a thing.

  1362. We're deciding altogether

  1363. that you may not.

  1364. And so we practice

  1365. Christian liberty in many

  1366. varied ways, but it's

  1367. always aimed, rightly

  1368. practiced, at gospel

  1369. proclamation, at gospel

  1370. advancement.

1371. So we don't feel like

  1372. someone has their thumb

  1373. down on us because

  1374. they're weaker in the

  1375. faith than we are.

1376. But we pick that up and

1377. we accept it for the sake

  1378. of their soul.

1379. The way I dress on Sunday

  1380. is much simpler, much

  1381. less complicated, right?

  1382. Topic.

1383. I have the freedom to

  1384. preach in flip-flops and

  1385. shorts and a t-shirt.

1386. God does not look at what

  1387. I'm wearing on a Sunday

  1388. morning and then empower

  1389. my preaching because I'm

  1390. wearing a jacket or a tie

  1391. occasionally with my

  1392. shirt's tucked in.

1393. I could be much more

  1394. comfortable on a Sunday

  1395. morning.

1396. I have the freedom to do

1397. that, but I am legitimately

  1398. concerned that someone

1399. comes in amongst us and

1400. can't even hear the words

1401. coming out of my mouth

1402. because they see me as

  1403. disrespectful to the

  1404. position that I hold.

1405. We live in a culture that

  1406. thinks in those terms.

1407. We live in a culture where

1408. many people grew up in

  1409. churches where the pastor

1410. always had on a suit.

  1411. Usually an ill-fitting

1412. suit because he doesn't get

1413. paid enough to buy nice

  1414. suits.

  1415. I would wear a suit every

  1416. Sunday morning for the

  1417. sake of your soul.

1418. And I hate wearing suits,

1419. but I would do it for the

1420. sake of your soul because I

  1421. don't think that this is a

  1422. crowd that typically cares

  1423. about such a thing.

  1424. I don't.

1425. If I began to think that

1426. that was the case, I

  1427. definitely would.

  1428. So we consider, we

  1429. practice liberty, and I'm

  1430. not practicing my liberty

  1431. when I put on a jacket

  1432. Sunday morning.

1433. Did you guys notice I have

1434. one jacket I wear on

  1435. Sundays?

  1436. Because I like it.

  1437. But I'm practicing my

  1438. Christian liberty when I

  1439. put it on.

  1440. Right?

  1441. I've been set free.

1442. I've been set free from the

  1443. law.

1444. So putting on this jacket

1445. is a practice of liberty,

1446. not a neglect of Christian

  1447. liberty.

  1448. So, Paul circumcises

  1449. Timothy for this reason,

1450. for the sake of people's

1451. souls, so that Timothy would

1452. not be a stumbling block in

1453. their traveling and in their

  1454. entrance into the

  1455. synagogues.

1456. Timothy would not have been

  1457. allowed in the synagogues

  1458. having been uncircumcised.

1459. So he's able now to

  1460. participate fully in that

  1461. tradition and share the

  1462. gospel with people.

  1463. So he circumcises

1464. Timothy and then verse 4

1465. says they went on their

1466. way through the cities and

1467. it's so fascinating that the

1468. way Luke records this, that

  1469. what they're doing is they're

  1470. delivering to them for

  1471. observance the decisions that

1472. have been reached by the

1473. apostles and elders who were

  1474. in Jerusalem.

1475. The thing they're going and

1476. doing is teaching all of the

  1477. churches that they don't

  1478. have to be circumcised.

1479. It's the very thing that

  1480. they're teaching them.

  1481. Hey, don't be circumcised,

  1482. but be culturally sensitive.

1483. Wasn't that the drive of that

  1484. message?

  1485. Remember, abstain from what

  1486. has been sacrificed to

1487. idols and from blood and

  1488. from what has been

  1489. strangled and from sexual

  1490. immorality.

  1491. These cultural considerations,

1492. matters of offense to the

1493. Jews and this one moral

  1494. obligation.

1495. You see, Paul understands the

  1496. spirit of the letter.

1497. Paul doesn't accept it as

1498. just a mere list, a new law,

  1499. but he understands the

  1500. spirit of the letter.

1501. And he applies this idea of

  1502. cultural consideration of not

1503. being stumbling blocks for the

1504. Jews to the very matter that the

1505. letter sought to unburden the

  1506. Gentile believers from.

1507. He takes along a young man who

1508. will be a leader in the church and

1509. a missionary companion for him and

1510. has him circumcised to aid in

1511. bringing people to faith in Christ.

1512. On your bulletin, the quote from A.W.

1513. Tozer, who was a 20th century pastor and

  1514. author, he said this,

1515. Be hard on yourself and easy on others.

1516. Carry your own cross, but never lay one on

  1517. the back of another.

1518. Paul preached in delivering this message

  1519. for observance.

1520. Paul preached salvation by grace alone,

1521. through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.

1522. And all of that lived out in love.

1523. It becomes the grateful response to what

1524. God has done for us in Christ,

1525. that we then turn and love others.

1526. And we lay down our own will for the sake of

  1527. others.

1528. So this is the freedom that was exercised in

  1529. the circumcision of Timothy.

1530. And then second and brief, the effect of

  1531. circumcising Timothy.

1532. It's not really an entirely fair second point

1533. because the effect we see in verse 5 is not

1534. just because Timothy is circumcised.

1535. So I hope you'll catch what I'm trying to say.

1536. Paul's missionary troop is traveling about.

  1537. They're delivering a message.

  1538. It's a gospel message.

1539. And the gospel preached and practiced

  1540. always results in fruit.

1541. The gospel preached and practiced

  1542. always results in fruit.

1543. Verse 5, so because of, right?

1544. Not just because of Timothy's circumcision,

1545. but because of his circumcision

1546. and the message being preached.

1547. So, the churches were strengthened in the faith

1548. and they increased in numbers daily.

1549. So the gospel preached and practiced

  1550. always results in fruit.

  1551. The fruit of what?

1552. The fruit of increased faith.

1553. The church is being built up in faith.

1554. And the fruit of new faith.

  1555. Faith.

1556. They're increasing in numbers as well.

1557. Not only are they growing in their depth,

1558. but they're also growing in their breadth.

1559. as the gospel is both preached and practiced.

1560. I hope it's becoming familiar to you.

1561. There it is up on the screen.

1562. The vision statement of our church,

1563. which is not unique for our church,

  1564. shouldn't be anyway,

1565. that our church exists to glorify God,

  1566. to magnify His name,

  1567. by experiencing,

  1568. proclaiming,

1569. and displaying the supremacy of Jesus Christ

  1570. in all things,

  1571. to all peoples.

1572. And that derives at the very point

  1573. that I'm making now.

1574. That we both know that Jesus Christ is supreme

  1575. to anything else,

1576. to anything we might be able to do

  1577. under Christian liberty.

  1578. Christ is better.

1579. And all that I have should be leveraged

1580. to have more of Him.

  1581. To experience Him deeper.

1582. To be known by Him greater.

1583. All of this should be leveraged

  1584. at that very point.

1585. That we would know Christ as supreme

  1586. in our experience.

1587. And that will move us,

1588. it will drive us out

1589. to both say that to be true

1590. and to live it to be true as well.

  1591. Practiced and preached.

1592. And I am so challenged

1593. by verses like verse 5 of chapter 16.

1594. As they're doing these very simple things,

  1595. traveling around,

  1596. preaching the gospel,

  1597. Timothy is now circumcised,

1598. and they're strengthened in the faith,

1599. and they increased in numbers daily.

  1600. What a phenomenal thing

1601. to have happen in the life of our church.

1602. So here's some simple application for you.

  1603. First,

  1604. are you saved

  1605. by grace alone,

  1606. through faith alone,

  1607. in Jesus Christ alone?

  1608. beloved,

1609. I fear that we live in a day and age

1610. where people have been sold

  1611. a cheap grace gospel,

  1612. a crossless Christianity,

  1613. Christianity,

  1614. and a crossless Christianity,

  1615. it's a Christless Christianity,

1616. and it's not Christianity at all.

1617. That you have been told,

  1618. growing up,

  1619. young,

  1620. likely,

  1621. possibly,

  1622. in churches,

  1623. that simply,

  1624. going through some motions,

  1625. taking some steps,

  1626. doing a few things,

  1627. repeat after me,

  1628. sign a card,

  1629. get dunked in water,

  1630. and you're a follower of Jesus.

1631. And all of those things

1632. may have been part of your story

  1633. of coming to faith

  1634. in Jesus Christ,

1635. but I fear that there are

  1636. countless people

  1637. who believe they're Christians

1638. and are not Christians at all.

1639. So you have to ask yourself

  1640. an honest question.

  1641. When I think about

  1642. why it is I'm a Christian,

1643. is that because of things

  1644. that I did

1645. or because God saved me

  1646. by His grace?

  1647. The picture is,

1648. those of you who like

  1649. good rap music,

  1650. Shilin,

1651. we're not drowning in the ocean,

1652. and God throws us a rope,

1653. and we reach out and grab it.

1654. The picture is that we are dead

1655. on the bottom of the ocean,

  1656. and Christ leaps in,

  1657. and He swims down,

1658. and He pulls us up,

  1659. and He breathes life

  1660. in our lungs, right?

1661. As that's your experience, right?

1662. I was a wretched enemy of God,

1663. and God woke me up

  1664. in Christ.

  1665. He saved me.

1666. Are you saved by grace alone

  1667. through faith alone

  1668. in Jesus Christ alone?

  1669. Is your righteousness

  1670. in Christ's person

  1671. and work

  1672. or in your working?

  1673. Secondly,

1674. if you are saved by grace alone

  1675. through faith alone

  1676. in Jesus Christ alone,

  1677. I hope you have a confidence

  1678. of that this morning.

1679. What might God be requiring of you

  1680. in order that some

  1681. might be saved?

1682. How could God be suggesting to you

1683. that you reorient your life

  1684. so that some

  1685. might be saved?

1686. Is there anything you can think of now

1687. that you would be unwilling

  1688. to give up?

  1689. Anything.

  1690. Would you be unwilling

  1691. to give up

1692. in order to see the church

  1693. strengthened in the faith

  1694. and increasing

  1695. in numbers

  1696. daily?

1697. I would suggest to you

  1698. that there are things

  1699. like that.

  1700. That if you would

  1701. ask God

  1702. to search your heart

  1703. and take some time

  1704. to consider

  1705. what you might

  1706. hold on to

  1707. that's not Jesus,

  1708. things that you worship

  1709. instead of Him,

1710. and if you would by grace

  1711. let those things go,

  1712. we would see

  1713. things begin to happen.

  1714. The church strengthened,

  1715. increasing in numbers

  1716. daily.

  1717. Wouldn't that be

  1718. a wonderful blessing?

  1719. Let's pray together.
