  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  2. While you're getting there, as we open up the only infallible book that exists,

  3. ! Let me speak a bit of a caution to you, which is probably not a caution so much for you as it may be for those that you know.

  4. The Scriptures are the only infallible text we have in any book or any language.

  5. It's only true in that it's consistent with the Scriptures.

  6. There are many books produced these days, Christian literature, that is not true and is not consistent with the book, the good book.

  7. One such book is a book called The Shack.

  8. It sold 20 million copies, written by a man named William Paul Young.

  9. And you all may know that a movie was just produced based on the book.

  10. And whether you think that The Shack is just a bit of allegory that tells a good story, speaks of some of the good quality about God,

  11. or whether you find it to be an altogether heretical departure from orthodoxy,

  12. some of the unintended consequence of people who claim to follow Jesus buying and going to see such material,

  13. is that it gives a guy like William Paul Young a voice in our culture.

  14. He recently released a book called Lies We Believe About God,

  15. where he says this of Christ's death.

  16. Who originated the cross?

  17. If God did, then we worship a cosmic abuser,

  18. who in divine wisdom created a means to torture human beings in the most painful and abhorrent manner.

  19. Frankly, it is often this very cruel and monstrous God that the atheist refuses to acknowledge

  20. or grant credibility in any sense.

  21. And rightly so.

  22. Better know God at all than this one.

  23. And so, we must be careful,

  24. both about what we consume and about what others around us consume.

  25. Because a Christianity without the cross is a Christianity without Christ.

  26. And there's no Christianity at all.

  27. Atheists reject the God of the Bible

  28. because the Spirit of God has not illuminated Him to them.

  29. Not because it's untrue.

  30. And so with that in mind, we come to our text today,

  31. which has nothing to do with the shack at all.

  32. But it's the truth.

  33. And our text, as I said, is Acts chapter 16, verses 11 through 15.

    Acts 16:11–15

  34. We're blessed, beloved, this morning to continue our study of Luke's second account of Jesus' ministry.

  35. The book of Acts is a record of Jesus' ascended ministry

  36. through the agency of the Holy Spirit in the lives of His church.

  37. This morning, we find ourselves observing a portion of Paul's second missionary journey.

  38. Last week, we saw that Paul and Silas and Timothy and now Luke

  39. were guided by the Spirit of Jesus.

  40. That's verse 7 of chapter 16.

  41. Guided by the Spirit of Jesus in no uncertain terms to depart from Macedonia.

  42. Luke states in verse 10 of chapter 16 that immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia,

  43. concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

  44. And it is with this intention of theirs that we come to our text for today.

  45. Beloved, this is God's Word to us.

  46. It was written for His glory and our good.

  47. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  48. I begin reading in verse 11.

  49. So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace,

  50. and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi,

  51. which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.

  52. We remained in this city some days.

  53. And on the Sabbath day, we went outside the gate to the riverside,

  54. where we supposed there was a place of prayer.

  55. And we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.

  56. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia,

  57. from the city of Thyatira,

  58. a seller of purple goods,

  59. who was a worshiper of God.

  60. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.

  61. And after she was baptized, and her household as well,

  62. she urged us, saying,

  63. If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,

  64. come to my house and stay.

  65. And she prevailed upon us.

  66. After Jesus' resurrection, before His ascension,

  67. He stated the following to the disciples in Matthew 28, verses 18-20.

    Matthew 28:18–20

  68. He said,

  69. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

  70. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  71. baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  72. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  73. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  74. In similar form, Jesus stated in Acts 1, verse 8,

    Acts 1:8

  75. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.

  76. You will be My witnesses in Jerusalem,

  77. and in all Judea and Samaria,

  78. and to the end of the earth.

  79. From these two texts,

  80. we can see that Jesus' promise of presence from Matthew 28-20,

  81. I am with you always,

  82. is fulfilled by the Holy Spirit,

  83. and is accompanied by power,

  84. which is the all authority in heaven and on earth

  85. that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 28-18.

  86. And the aim of Jesus' presence and power

  87. in the lives of His disciples

  88. is the making of disciples

  89. by being His witnesses

  90. to all nations,

  91. to the end of the earth,

  92. and everywhere in between.

  93. So the scene in today's text

  94. is a picture of this work,

  95. the presence and the power of the Spirit of Jesus

  96. aimed at gospel mission.

  97. That's why I will arrange our study

  98. of Acts 16, verses 11-15

    Acts 16:11–15

  99. on the following three points.

  100. And of course, I'll come back to these,

  101. but this will be the outline today.

  102. Number one,

  103. the Spirit of Jesus' mission strategy.

  104. The Spirit of Jesus' mission strategy.

  105. Number two,

  106. the Spirit of Jesus' mission power.

  107. And number three,

  108. the Spirit of Jesus' mission result.

  109. Well, before we consider the text

  110. arranged on those three points,

  111. let's understand the geography

  112. and the anthropology of the text.

  113. That is to say,

  114. the where and the who of the text.

  115. And this is in verse 11 and verse 12.

  116. They set sail from Troas.

  117. They make a voyage to Samothrace,

  118. the following day to Neopolis,

  119. then to Philippi,

  120. which is a district of Macedonia

  121. and a Roman colony.

  122. I don't know if it helps you.

  123. I like knowing where in the world

  124. we are talking about.

  125. So I don't know if that map is still,

  126. hey, it's up there already.

  127. That's fantastic.

  128. I was told last week

  129. that this got a little bit confusing,

  130. and so I apologize if it is.

  131. I don't have a laser pointer.

  132. I need to get one.

  133. If you'll note the region labeled here Asia,

  134. recall that the Spirit of God

  135. has moved this missionary company across Asia

  136. to not preach the gospel there.

  137. They're pressing on in this Macedonian call.

  138. And so from the port city of Troas

  139. up in the northwest corner there of Asia,

  140. from the port city of Troas,

  141. they sail to a little island

  142. right up in the now northeast corner

  143. of the Aegean Sea called Samothrace.

  144. It's in weird gray all-cap letters there.

  145. Little island of Samothrace.

  146. They stay there overnight,

  147. likely to avoid the danger of sailing at nighttime.

  148. We're not really sure.

  149. And the next day they sail on.

  150. Again, we're moving up

  151. in this northwestern fashion to Neopolis,

  152. Neopolis,

  153. and then just ten miles inland

  154. to Philippi.

  155. Now, Philippi was a leading city

  156. of the district of Macedonia,

  157. and it was a Roman colony.

  158. It was named after Philip II of Macedon,

  159. which was Alexander the Great's father.

  160. It was the far eastern terminus,

  161. the end of the great Roman highway

  162. known as the Via Ignatia,

  163. or the Ignatian Highway.

  164. So Philippi was an important hub

  165. for the spread of the gospel westward.

  166. And this is where they've been taken to, right?

  167. We see them speeding their way along

  168. to the city of Philippi.

  169. And it's here in Philippi

  170. that they remained for some days

  171. and where we can learn something

  172. of the spirit of Jesus' mission strategy,

  173. which is our first point.

  174. You can take that map down

  175. if you'd like, Natalie.

  176. Verse 13,

  177. we read that on the Sabbath day,

  178. they go outside the gate

  179. to the riverside

  180. where they supposed

  181. there was a place of prayer.

  182. And they sit down

  183. and they speak to the women

  184. who had come together.

  185. We have observed

  186. that it was Paul's habit

  187. to visit the local synagogue

  188. on the Sabbath

  189. in order to persuade the Jews

  190. that the promise of a Messiah

  191. had been fulfilled in Jesus.

  192. Now recall,

  193. there are still Jews

  194. scattered all over the place

  195. back from Babylonian captivity.

  196. Not every Jew had returned.

  197. Right now,

  198. we have descendants of those Jews

  199. living all over the place.

  200. And in many cities,

  201. there was a synagogue.

  202. And it was a strategic place to go

  203. because these are people

  204. who worshipped

  205. the God of the Old Testament.

  206. Right?

  207. They knew about the promise

  208. of a coming Messiah.

  209. So it was a wonderful starting place

  210. for Paul to preach the gospel.

  211. But we see here,

  212. in Philippi,

  213. there's a very small

  214. Jewish population

  215. and no synagogue.

  216. We can know this

  217. because in order to establish

  218. a synagogue,

  219. a city had to have

  220. ten Jewish men

  221. who were the heads

  222. of households.

  223. That doesn't seem to exist here.

  224. In the city of Philippi,

  225. there is no synagogue.

  226. When a synagogue

  227. could not be established,

  228. a place of prayer

  229. would be formed

  230. outside,

  231. near a sea,

  232. or a river.

  233. So when able to find

  234. a synagogue within the city,

  235. this is why we see

  236. Paul and his companions

  237. heading outside the gate

  238. to the riverside

  239. where we supposed

  240. there was a place of prayer.

  241. This is why.

  242. They couldn't find a synagogue,

  243. so it made sense

  244. that they would go

  245. outside the gate

  246. along the river

  247. to find this place.

  248. of prayer.

  249. Now when speaking

  250. of the spirit

  251. of Jesus' mission strategy,

  252. let me be clear here,

  253. I do not mean to speak

  254. to his strategy

  255. in its entirety.

  256. You can get very lost

  257. if you think

  258. this is the entirety

  259. of Jesus' mission strategy

  260. on earth.

  261. But simply to show you this,

  262. the spirit of Jesus

  263. exalts the person

  264. and work of Jesus Christ

  265. in unexpected places

  266. to unexpected people.

  267. So this is part

  268. of his mission strategy.

  269. Unexpected places

  270. to unexpected people.

  271. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:27

  272. verse 27,

  273. God chose what is foolish

  274. in the world

  275. to shame the wise.

  276. God chose what is weak

  277. in the world

  278. to shame the strong.

  279. Paul and his companions

  280. shared the gospel

  281. of Jesus Christ

  282. with women.

  283. Not only was the Jewish community

  284. too small

  285. for a synagogue

  286. to exist,

  287. but the only people

  288. in attendance

  289. at the place of prayer

  290. were women

  291. who in this day

  292. were considered

  293. second class citizens.

  294. Let this text serve you

  295. if anybody ever makes a claim

  296. that Christianity

  297. is oppressive to women.

  298. Let this text serve you.

  299. Here we see Paul

  300. having seen a vision

  301. of a Macedonian man

  302. asking for help,

  303. sharing instead

  304. with anyone

  305. who would listen.

  306. The Pharisees of Paul's day

  307. would have found this

  308. atrocious.

  309. The Pharisees of Paul's day

  310. would not teach women

  311. and in their prayers

  312. they would regularly

  313. thank God

  314. that they were neither

  315. Gentiles,

  316. slaves,

  317. or women.

  318. Very oppressive.

  319. Now Paul never denied

  320. the uniqueness

  321. of God's good creation

  322. of the genders.

  323. In fact,

  324. he makes much defense

  325. of that

  326. in other texts.

  327. But stated in Galatians 3,

    Galatians 3:28

  328. verse 28,

  329. Paul says this,

  330. there is neither Jew

  331. nor Greek,

  332. there is neither slave

  333. nor free,

  334. there is no male

  335. and female.

  336. For you are all one

  337. in Christ Jesus.

  338. Paul affirms

  339. that while male

  340. and female

  341. are different

  342. in design,

  343. before God

  344. we are positionally

  345. the same.

  346. in Christ

  347. we are Christians.

  348. Christianity,

  349. properly applied,

  350. lifts women up

  351. and maximizes

  352. their God-ordered

  353. femininity.

  354. Beloved females,

  355. !

  356. I think

  357. feminism

  358. is never

  359. your servant.

  360. A God-ordered

  361. gender equality,

  362. God-ordered,

  363. found positionally

  364. in Christ

  365. before God

  366. the same

  367. but meant

  368. to serve

  369. different roles

  370. and be fulfilled

  371. in those roles

  372. is

  373. to your benefit.

  374. So we see

  375. Paul and his companions

  376. sit down

  377. and speak to the women

  378. who had come together.

  379. But what

  380. do they say?

  381. What do they say?

  382. Luke's very brief account

  383. just says

  384. that they spoke

  385. to the women.

  386. As evidenced later

  387. in the text

  388. by Lydia's

  389. belief,

  390. they shared

  391. the good news

  392. of Jesus

  393. with them.

  394. This is the content

  395. of their

  396. conversation.

  397. They spoke

  398. to the women

  399. of the Creator God

  400. and His good

  401. law,

  402. which they were

  403. likely aware of

  404. as they were

  405. gathering in a place

  406. of prayer.

  407. They spoke to them

  408. of their failure

  409. to keep the law

  410. and the punishment

  411. due them

  412. accordingly.

  413. They spoke to them

  414. of Jesus'

  415. perfect keeping

  416. of that law

  417. and of His

  418. atoning sacrifice

  419. on the cross.

  420. They spoke to them

  421. of Jesus'

  422. resurrection

  423. and His

  424. subsequent ascension

  425. and of their

  426. need for repentance

  427. and belief.

  428. They shared

  429. the good news

  430. of Jesus

  431. Christ

  432. in an unexpected

  433. place

  434. to unexpected

  435. people.

  436. people.

  437. So we see,

  438. number one,

  439. the Spirit

  440. of Jesus'

  441. mission

  442. strategy,

  443. the gospel

  444. spoken

  445. in unexpected

  446. places

  447. to unexpected

  448. people.

  449. Now let's look

  450. at the second

  451. point,

  452. the Spirit

  453. of Jesus'

  454. mission

  455. power.

  456. The Spirit

  457. of Jesus'

  458. mission

  459. power.

  460. Verse 14,

  461. we see that

  462. one who

  463. heard us

  464. was a woman

  465. named Lydia

  466. from the city

  467. of Thyatira,

  468. a seller of

  469. purple goods

  470. who was a

  471. worshiper of

  472. God.

  473. The Lord

  474. opened her

  475. heart to pay

  476. attention to

  477. what was said

  478. by Paul.

  479. Luke records

  480. for us the

  481. conversion

  482. of the first

  483. European

  484. Christian,

  485. a woman

  486. called

  487. Lydia

  488. who was

  489. from the

  490. city of

  491. Thyatira

  492. which was

  493. in the

  494. province

  495. of

  496. Lydia.

  497. It's likely

  498. that she

  499. is called

  500. Lydia

  501. for that

  502. reason.

  503. She was

  504. probably

  505. the woman

  506. from Lydia

  507. is the way

  508. she would

  509. have been

  510. known

  511. in Philippi

  512. and so

  513. she was

  514. called

  515. Lydia

  516. probably

  517. for that

  518. reason

  519. unless

  520. her

  521. parents

  522. were

  523. clever.

  524. I'm

  525. glad

  526. my

  527. parents

  528. didn't

  529. name

  530. me

  531. Gwinnett.

  532. She

  533. was a

  534. seller

  535. of

  536. purple

  537. goods

  538. and this

  539. is

  540. significant.

  541. Purple

  542. dye

  543. was made

  544. from

  545. the

  546. glands

  547. of

  548. a

  549. very

  550. particular

  551. shellfish

  552. or

  553. from

  554. the

  555. roots

  556. of

  557. a

  558. plant

  559. called

  560. the

  561. matter

  562. plant

  563. both

  564. which

  565. were

  566. very

  567. rare

  568. and

  569. therefore

  570. cloth

  571. that was

  572. purple

  573. was

  574. very

  575. expensive

  576. and

  577. as

  578. such

  579. purple

  580. garments

  581. were

  582. only

  583. worn

  584. by

  585. the

  586. extremely

  587. wealthy

  588. and

  589. this

  590. was

  591. likely

  592. a

  593. very

  594. lucrative

  595. business

  596. that

  597. Lydia

  598. was

  599. engaged

  600. in.

  601. She

  602. was

  603. doing

  604. well

  605. for

  606. herself.

  607. Verse 15

  608. tells us

  609. that she

  610. had a

  611. house

  612. large

  613. enough

  614. to

  615. host

  616. the

  617. missionary

  618. team.

  619. She

  620. invited

  621. them

  622. to

  623. host

  624. them

  625. and

  626. she

  627. prevailed

  628. upon

  629. them

  630. convinced

  631. them

  632. to

  633. come

  634. and

  635. likely

  636. the

  637. church

  1110. us

  1111. helpless

  1386. away

  1387. from

  1388. the

  1389. Greek

  1390. word

  1391. baptizo

  1392. which

  1408. Bible

  1458. repeatedly

  1459. I've

  1460. seen

  1461. one

  1462. translator

  1463. suggest

  1464. that

  1472. baptizo

  1473. it's

  1486. was

  1487. probably

  1488. with

  1489. her

  1490. were

  1491. likely

  1492. immersed

  1493. in

  1494. the

  1495. river

  1496. dunked

  1497. under

  1498. in

  1499. the

  1500. river

  1501. now

  1502. it

  1503. is

  1504. texts

  1505. like

  1506. this

  1507. in

  1508. Acts

  1509. of

  1510. which

  1511. there

  1512. are

  1513. two

  1514. others

  1515. where

  1516. we

  1517. see

  1518. household

  1519. baptisms

  1520. that

  1521. are

  1522. most

  1523. often

  1524. used

  1525. by

  1526. our

  1527. brothers

  1528. who

  1529. are

  1530. paedo

  1531. baptists

  1532. this is a

  1533. fancy

  1534. word

  1535. paedo

  1536. baptists

  1537. are

  1538. those

  1539. who

  1540. baptize

  1541. infants

  1542. we

  1543. at

  1544. Christ

  1545. family

  1546. church

  1547. are

  1548. not

  1549. paedo

  1550. but

  1551. rather

  1552. credo

  1553. baptists

  1554. that's

  1555. our

  1556. fancy

  1557. word

  1558. we

  1559. get

  1560. to

  1561. own

  1562. which

  1563. means

  1564. that

  1565. we

  1566. only

  1567. baptize

  1568. people

  1569. who

  1570. have

  1571. professed

  1572. faith

  1573. in

  1574. Jesus

  1575. Christ

  1576. professed

  1577. faith

  1578. in

  1579. Jesus

  1580. Christ

  1581. now

  1582. I

  1583. don't

  1584. have

  1585. time

  1586. this

  1587. morning

  1588. or

  1589. likely

  1590. the

  1591. energy

  1592. for

  1593. a

  1594. large

  1595. treatment

  1596. of

  1597. the

  1598. topic

  1599. of

  1600. baptism

  1601. but

  1602. I

  1603. do

  1604. believe

  1605. that

  1606. it

  1607. is

  1608. important

  1609. that

  1610. you

  1611. hold

  1612. a

  1613. conviction

  1614. on

  1615. the

  1616. matter

  1617. and

  1618. understand

  1619. why

  1620. you

  1621. hold

  1622. said

  1623. conviction

  1624. it's

  1625. a

  1626. wonderful

  1627. thing

  1628. that

  1629. we

  1630. have

  1631. the

  1632. resource

  1633. of

  1634. Bible

  1635. translation

  1636. and

  1637. study

  1638. tools

  1639. at

  1640. our

  1641. disposal

  1642. I

  1643. commend

  1644. you

  1645. to

  1646. go

  1647. and

  1648. search

  1649. the

  1650. scriptures

  1651. right

  1652. believe

  1653. what you

  1654. believe

  1655. and

  1656. understand

  1657. what you

  1658. believe

  1659. don't

  1660. just

  1661. do it

  1662. because

  1663. you

  1664. know

  1665. that

  1666. I

  1667. think

  1668. that

  1669. credo

  1670. baptism

  1671. is the

  1672. proper

  1673. way

  1674. to go

  1675. I

  1676. also

  1677. want

  1678. you

  1679. to

  1680. understand

  1681. that

  1682. I

  1683. do

  1684. not

  1685. want

  1686. you

  1687. to

  1688. mistake

  1689. my

  1690. conviction

  1691. on

  1692. this

  1693. subject

  1694. or

  1695. any

  1696. other

  1697. as a

  1698. spirit

  1699. of

  1700. controversy

  1701. I

  1702. know

  1703. that

  1704. when

  1705. I

  1706. hold

  1707. beliefs

  1708. sometimes

  1709. I

  1710. am

  1711. passionate

  1712. about

  1713. the

  1714. beliefs

  1715. I

  1716. hold

  1717. it

  1718. is

  1719. never

  1720. my

  1721. intention

  1722. to

  1723. cause

  1724. controversy

  1725. in

  1726. our

  1727. community

  1728. I

  1729. know

  1730. many

  1731. pedo

  1732. baptists

  1733. who

  1734. are

  1735. faithful

  1736. brothers

  1737. and

  1738. friends

  1739. I

  1740. have

  1741. learned

  1742. much

  1743. from

  1744. pedo

  1745. baptist

  1746. scholars

  1747. I

  1748. have

  1749. a

  1750. great

  1751. commentary

  1752. on

  1753. the

  1754. book

  1755. of

  1756. acts

  1757. written

  1758. by

  1759. R.C.

  1760. Sproul

  1761. which

  1762. I

  1763. had

  1764. to

  1765. pretty

  1766. much

  1767. entirely

  1768. ignore

  1769. for

  1770. this

  1771. section

  1772. but

  1773. I

  1774. have

  1775. learned

  1776. much

  1777. from

  1778. his

  1779. writing

  1780. very

  1781. much

  1782. appreciate

  1783. the

  1784. contribution

  1785. of

  1786. pedo

  1787. baptist

  1788. scholars

  1789. to

  1790. Christianity

  1791. and

  1792. while

  1793. I

  1794. believe

  1795. that

  1796. my

  1797. understanding

  1798. my

  1799. case

  1800. my

  1801. belief

  1802. in

  1803. credo

  1804. baptism

  1805. is

  1806. biblical

  1807. and

  1808. that

  1809. it's

  1810. clear

  1811. and

  1812. nowhere

  1813. expressly

  1814. commands

  1815. in the

  1816. Bible

  1817. that

  1818. infant

  1819. baptism

  1820. should

  1821. be

  1822. practiced

  1823. nor

  1824. does

  1825. it

  1826. anywhere

  1827. expressly

  1828. forbid

  1829. it

  1830. so

  1831. the

  1832. point

  1833. is

  1834. we

  1835. should

  1836. be

  1837. charitable

  1838. we

  1839. should

  1840. be

  1841. charitable

  1842. I

  1843. don't

  1844. find

  1845. it

  1846. to

  1847. be

  1848. a

  1849. particularly

  1850. great

  1851. thing

  1852. but

  1853. some

  1854. people

  1855. do

  1856. is

  1857. what

  1858. I'm

  1859. suggesting

  1860. so

  1861. let's

  1862. hold

  1863. our

  1864. convictions

  1865. and

  1866. let's

  1867. contend

  1868. for the

  1869. truth

  1870. while

  1871. appreciating

  1872. the

  1873. truths

  1874. that

  1875. we

  1876. hold

  1877. in

  1878. common

  1879. with

  1880. our

  1881. paedo-baptist

  1882. brothers

  1883. right

  1884. more

  1885. central

  1886. truths

  1887. that

  1888. we

  1889. hold

  1890. in

  1891. common

  1892. particularly

  1893. and

  1894. probably

  1895. especially

  1896. Presbyterians

  1897. of the

  1898. conservative

  1899. kind

  1900. PCA

  1901. if

  1902. somebody

  1903. says

  1904. they're

  1905. Presbyterian

  1906. ask

  1907. them

  1908. PCA

  1909. or

  1910. PCUSA

  1911. PCA

  1912. Presbyterians

  1913. are much

  1914. like us

  1915. in our

  1916. beliefs

  1917. we have

  1918. a wonderful

  1919. PCA

  1920. congregation

  1921. here in

  1922. Dahlonega

  1923. which I

  1924. am

  1925. very

  1926. thankful

  1927. exists

  1928. and I'm

  1929. glad to

  1930. partner

  1931. with them

  1932. in this

  1933. community

  1934. for the

  1935. gospel

  1936. we can

  1937. unite

  1938. in

  1939. salvation

  1940. by grace

  1941. alone

  1942. through

  1943. faith

  1944. alone

  1945. in

  1946. Christ

  1947. alone

  1948. we

  1949. can

  1950. unite

  1951. in

  1952. the

  1953. fact

  1954. that

  1955. baptism

  1956. does

  1957. not

  1958. save

  1959. you

  1960. some

  1961. hesitate

  1962. to call

  1963. them

  1964. even

  1965. denominations

  1966. non-Christian

  1967. denominations

  1968. believe that

  1969. baptism

  1970. does

  1971. save

  1972. you

  1973. not

  1974. most

  1975. of

  1976. the

  1977. people

  1978. we

  1979. know

  1980. that

  1981. practice

  1982. pedo-baptism

  1983. baptism

  1984. does

  1985. not

  1986. save

  1987. you

  1988. but

  1989. is

  1990. rather

  1991. a sign

  1992. of

  1993. God's

  1994. promise

  1995. particulars

  1996. of which

  1997. vary

  1998. amongst

  1999. us

  2000. but

  2001. all

  2002. the

  2003. same

  2004. we

  2005. agree

  2006. that

  2007. baptism

  2008. is

  2009. not

  2010. salvific

  2011. on

  2012. your

  2013. bulletin

  2014. I

  2015. included

  2016. as I

  2017. like

  2018. to

  2019. do

  2020. a

  2021. Charles

  2022. Spurgeon

  2023. quote

  2024. I'm

  2025. very

  2026. pleased

  2027. to

  2028. agree

  2029. with

  2030. Spurgeon

  2031. concerning

  2032. baptism

  2033. but

  2034. if I

  2035. play that

  2036. game

  2037. the

  2038. pedo-baptists

  2039. get

  2040. Whitfield

  2041. and

  2042. Baxter

  2043. and

  2044. Flavel

  2045. and

  2046. Edwards

  2047. and

  2048. Chalmers

  2049. and

  2050. Brainerd

  2051. and a

  2052. lot

  2053. of

  2054. others

  2055. so I

  2056. digress

  2057. Spurgeon

  2058. said this

  2059. a man

  2060. who

  2061. knows

  2062. that

  2063. he

  2064. is

  2065. saved

  2066. by

  2067. believing

  2068. in

  2069. Christ

  2070. does

  2071. not

  2072. when

  2073. he

  2074. is

  2075. baptized

  2076. lift

  2077. his

  2078. baptism

  2079. into

  2080. a

  2081. saving

  2082. ordinance

  2083. that's

  2084. the primary

  2085. point

  2086. of

  2087. the

  2088. quote

  2089. in

  2090. fact

  2091. he

  2092. is

  2093. the

  2094. very

  2095. best

  2096. protester

  2097. against

  2098. that

  2099. mistake

  2100. because

  2101. he

  2102. holds

  2103. that

  2104. he

  2105. has

  2106. no

  2107. right

  2108. to

  2109. be

  2110. baptized

  2111. until

  2112. he

  2113. is

  2114. saved

  2115. the

  2116. point

  2117. is

  2118. that

  2119. Lydia

  2120. who

  2121. for

  2122. obvious

  2123. reasons

  2124. was

  2125. not

  2126. circumcised

  2127. had

  2128. never

  2129. been

  2130. baptized

  2131. and

  2132. upon

  2133. placing

  2134. her

  2135. faith

  2136. in

  2137. Christ

  2138. she

  2139. was

  2140. this

  2141. is

  2142. the

  2143. point

  2144. it's

  2145. the

  2146. driving

  2147. point

  2148. right

  2149. the

  2150. paedo

  2151. Baptist

  2152. argument

  2153. that

  2154. her

  2155. household

  2156. was

  2157. baptized

  2158. because

  2159. of

  2160. her

  2161. faith

  2162. does

  2163. not

  2164. hold

  2165. water

  2166. pun

  2167. intended

  2168. for

  2169. me

  2170. because

  2171. it

  2172. assumes

  2173. that

  2174. her

  2175. household

  2176. included

  2177. infants

  2178. doesn't

  2179. it

  2180. have

  2181. to

  2182. assume

  2183. that

  2184. we

  2185. can

  2186. just

  2187. as

  2188. easily

  2189. and I

  2190. believe

  2191. more

  2192. biblically

  2193. assume

  2194. that

  2195. there

  2196. were

  2197. not

  2198. infants

  2199. and

  2200. that

  2201. those

  2202. of

  2203. her

  2204. household

  2205. who

  2206. were

  2207. baptized

  2208. did

  2209. so

  2210. as

  2211. a

  2212. result

  2213. of

  2214. faith

  2215. in

  2216. Jesus

  2217. baptism

  2218. has

  2219. always

  2220. been

  2221. used

  2222. as

  2223. a

  2224. sign

  2225. of

  2226. repentance

  2227. John

  2228. the

  2229. baptizer

  2230. come

  2231. John

  2232. the

  2233. baptist

  2234. baptism

  2235. was

  2236. exactly

  2237. that

  2238. Paul

  2239. states

  2240. this

  2241. in

  2242. Acts

    Acts 19:4

  2243. chapter

  2244. 19

  2245. verse

  2246. 4

  2247. he

  2248. says

  2249. John

  2250. baptized

  2251. with

  2252. the

  2253. baptism

  2254. of

  2255. repentance

  2256. and

  2257. Peter

  2258. said

  2259. in

  2260. his

  2261. sermon

  2262. on

  2263. the

  2264. day

  2265. of

  2266. Pentecost

  2267. in

  2268. response

  2269. to

  2270. the

  2271. question

  2272. asked

  2273. in

  2274. Acts

    Acts 2:37

  2275. chapter

  2276. 2

  2277. verse

  2278. 37

  2279. brothers

  2280. what

  2281. shall

  2282. we

  2283. do

  2284. he

  2285. had

  2286. preached

  2287. the

  2288. gospel

  2289. and

  2290. the

  2291. crowd

  2292. cried

  2293. out

  2294. brothers

  2295. what

  2296. shall

  2297. we

  2298. do

  2299. in

  2300. Acts

  2301. 2

  2302. and

  2303. be

  2304. baptized

  2305. Jesus

  2306. himself

  2307. who

  2308. was

  2309. circumcised

  2310. was

  2311. also

  2312. baptized

  2313. in

  2314. Matthew

  2315. 3

  2316. 15

  2317. he

  2318. says

  2319. thus

  2320. it is

  2321. fitting

  2322. for

  2323. us

  2324. to

  2325. fulfill

  2326. all

  2327. righteousness

  2328. so

  2329. Lydia

  2330. believed

  2331. and

  2332. her

  2333. household

  2334. as

  2335. well

  2336. I

  2337. would

  2338. argue

  2339. believed

  2340. and

  2341. they

  2342. were

  2343. baptized

  2344. the

  2345. spirit

  2346. of

  2347. Jesus

  2348. worked

  2349. obedience

  2350. in

  2351. them

  2352. to

  2353. be

  2354. baptized

  2355. so

  2356. we

  2357. can

  2358. see

  2359. the

  2360. spirit

  2361. of

  2362. Jesus

  2363. mission

  2364. strategy

  2365. gospel

  2366. proclamation

  2367. in

  2368. unlikely

  2369. places

  2370. to

  2371. unlikely

  2372. people

  2373. praise

  2374. God

  2375. I

  2376. find

  2377. myself

  2378. in

  2379. that

  2380. category

  2381. we

  2382. can

  2383. see

  2384. the

  2385. spirit

  2386. of

  2387. Jesus

  2388. mission

  2389. power

  2390. opening

  2391. the

  2392. hearts

  2393. of

  2394. Lydia

  2395. and

  2396. her

  2397. family

  2398. opening

  2399. my

  2400. heart

  2401. to

  2402. believe

  2403. the

  2404. gospel

  2405. of

  2406. Jesus

  2407. Christ

  2408. and

  2409. we

  2410. can

  2411. see

  2412. the

  2413. spirit

  2414. of

  2415. Jesus

  2416. mission

  2417. result

  2418. obedience

  2419. the

  2420. immediate

  2421. obedience

  2422. of

  2423. baptism

  2424. to

  2425. a

  2426. response

  2427. of

  2428. faith

  2429. so

  2430. what

  2431. does

  2432. it

  2433. all

  2434. mean

  2435. for

  2436. us

  2437. what

  2438. is

  2439. the

  2440. application

  2441. of

  2442. the

  2443. text

  2444. for

  2445. today

  2446. first

  2447. if

  2448. you

  2449. have

  2450. repented

  2451. and

  2452. believed

  2453. in

  2454. Jesus

  2455. Christ

  2456. rejoice

  2457. !

  2458. of

  2459. your

  2460. sin

  2461. say

  2462. with

  2463. Paul

  2464. as he

  2465. does

  2466. in

  2467. 1st

  2468. Timothy

  2469. chapter

  2470. 1

  2471. verse

  2472. 15

  2473. the

  2474. saying

  2475. is

  2476. trustworthy

  2477. and deserving

  2478. a full

  2479. acceptance

  2480. that

  2481. Christ

  2482. Jesus

  2483. came into

  2484. the world

  2485. to save

  2486. sinners

  2487. of whom

  2488. I am

  2489. the

  2490. foremost

  2491. do you

  2492. believe that

  2493. to be

  2494. true of

  2495. yourself

  2496. you were

  2497. a wretched

  2498. wretched

  2499. sinner

  2500. Christ

  2501. came to

  2502. save

  2503. you

  2504. and

  2505. be

  2506. witnesses

  2507. to

  2508. that

  2509. mercy

  2510. that

  2511. God

  2512. saved

  2513. you

  2514. Paul

  2515. goes

  2516. on

  2517. to

  2518. say

  2519. in

  2520. verse

  2521. 16

  2522. of

  2523. 1st

  2524. Timothy

  2525. chapter

  2526. 1

  2527. but

  2528. I

  2529. received

  2530. mercy

  2531. for

  2532. this

  2533. reason

  2534. that

  2535. in

  2536. me

  2537. as

  2538. the

  2539. foremost

  2540. Jesus

  2541. Christ

  2542. might

  2543. display

  2544. his

  2545. perfect

  2546. patience

  2547. !

  2548. as an

  2549. example

  2550. to

  2551. those

  2552. who

  2553. were

  2554. to

  2555. believe

  2556. in

  2557. him

  2558. for

  2559. eternal

  2560. life!

  2561. This

  2562. is a

  2563. witness

  2564. to

  2565. Christ

  2566. that

  2567. our

  2568. world

  2569. needs

  2570. beloved

  2571. they

  2572. do

  2573. not

  2574. need

  2575. our

  2576. judgment

  2577. they

  2578. need

  2579. us

  2580. to

  2581. come

  2582. to

  2583. them

  2584. and

  2585. say

  2586. me

  2587. too

  2588. but

  2589. worse

  2590. but

  2591. God

  2592. in

  2593. his

  2594. mercy

  2595. showed

  2596. me

  2597. patience

  2598. and

  2599. he

  2600. saved

  2601. my

  2602. soul

  2603. and

  2604. he'll

  2605. do

  2606. the

  2607. same

  2608. for

  2609. you

  2610. secondly

  2611. if

  2612. you

  2613. have

  2614. not

  2615. repented

  2616. and

  2617. believed

  2618. if

  2619. you

  2620. find

  2621. in

  2622. yourself

  2623. an

  2624. inclination

  2625. to

  2626. pay

  2627. attention

  2628. in

  2629. any

  2630. measure

  2631. to

  2632. the

  2633. gospel

  2634. this

  2635. morning

  2636. praise

  2637. God

  2638. he

  2639. is

  2640. at

  2641. work

  2642. within

  2643. you

  2644. and

  2645. the

  2646. aim

  2647. of

  2648. his

  2649. work

  2650. within

  2651. you

  2652. is

  2653. repentance

  2654. and

  2655. believe

  2656. so

  2657. repent

  2658. and

  2659. believe

  2660. that

  2661. is

  2662. the

  2663. call

  2664. if

  2665. you're

  2666. attuning

  2667. at

  2668. all

  2669. to

  2670. the

  2671. great

  2672. truth

  2673. of

  2674. the

  2675. gospel

  2676. who

  2677. God

  2678. is

  2679. and

  2680. who

  2681. you

  2682. are

  2683. and

  2684. this

  2685. great

  2686. chasm

  2687. that

  2688. exists

  2689. between

  2690. you

  2691. and

  2692. the

  2693. solution

  2694. to

  2695. that

  2696. separation

  2697. found

  2698. in

  2699. the

  2700. personal

  2701. work

  2702. of

  2703. Jesus

  2704. Christ

  2705. turn

  2706. from

  2707. your

  2708. sins

  2709. !

  2710. Repentance

  2711. confess

  2712. it

  2713. before

  2714. him

  2715. turn

  2716. from

  2717. it

  2718. and

  2719. believe

  2720. in

  2721. the

  2722. satisfactory

  2723. substitutionary

  2724. atoning

  2725. sacrifice

  2726. of

  2727. Christ

  2728. the

  2729. cross

  2730. great

  2731. high

  2732. point

  2733. of

  2734. Jesus

  2735. our

  2736. God's

  2737. expression

  2738. of

  2739. love

  2740. to

  2741. the

  2742. world

  2743. turn

  2744. from

  2745. your

  2746. sin

  2747. to

  2748. Christ

  2749. thirdly

  2750. if

  2751. you

  2752. have

  2753. repented

  2754. and

  2755. believed

  2756. and

  2757. have

  2758. not

  2759. been

  2760. baptized

  2761. as a

  2762. believer

  2763. do

  2764. so

  2765. it's

  2766. a

  2767. matter

  2768. of

  2769. obedience

  2770. let's

  2771. pray

  2772. together
