  1. Good morning. Open up your Bibles to Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  2. So I appreciate your prayers.

  3. As most of you know, I have some pretty serious respiratory problems,

  4. ! and I am pretty short of breath this morning for various reasons.

  5. So I'm going to obey a really good rule of preaching,

  6. which is for the preacher to take comfort in the message that he's about to say.

  7. So what I'm about to say from God's Word is even kind of what's encouraging me and sustaining me right now.

  8. But I'm also going to disobey another preaching rule, which is read the whole text before you start.

  9. But because this is a long text, I'm going to save myself the breath and just sort of walk through it with you.

  10. A lot of Reformed pastors are like, no, read the text first.

  11. But I'm just going to just walk through it with you, scene by scene, step by step.

  12. Because it's a narrative, and because it is a narrative, it's pretty easy to do that.

  13. So just join me in a word of prayer together.

  14. Father, we gather together this morning only for you.

  15. And I pray that if our hearts are divided, thinking about other things,

  16. that you would convict us of that and bring us to a right understanding of yourself and the gathering of your people.

  17. Just give us eyes to see, ears to hear this morning.

  18. And I pray that you would have your way.

  19. And Christ would be seen.

  20. In his name, amen.

  21. So we're in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  22. And Nathan did a really good introduction to last week about going,

  23. Paul and some other of the apostles going into Europe and kind of landing in Macedonia.

  24. So I'm going to try my best not to go over to some of the same ground.

  25. But those of you who know me know I can't resist sometimes because there's so much awesome history in all of this.

  26. But I just have this picture, you know, like of Paul and Silas and some of the other apostles just sailing over,

  27. you know, in a boat, like ready to invade Europe with the gospel, sailing across the Aegean Sea.

  28. In the Aegean Sea, you've seen a ton of invasions.

  29. The Greek invasion of Troy, the Persian invasion of Greece, the Roman invasion of Carthage.

  30. All happened like right there.

  31. Now, this is like the greatest of them all.

  32. Now, this is Christ sending his people to invade like the pagan land of Europe.

  33. I just love it.

  34. So it's this idea of our Jesus, the Jesus that we love kind of clashing into the world of Greek mythology and Rome

  35. and just ready to take it down.

  36. So I love that.

  37. Just a picture of him invading Europe, not with natural weapons,

  38. but really the weapons of prayer, the gospel, the word of God, sacrificial love is what his weapons are invading this.

  39. And why is this a big deal?

  40. So I'll tell you, for not all of us in here, but for most of us,

  41. I would dare to say that most of us come from a European descent.

  42. Most of our ancestors were from Europe in some way or another.

  43. Not all.

  44. But I want you to see this as grace.

  45. Why?

  46. You ever stop and ask yourself, why didn't the gospel not go east instead of west?

  47. And this means that, like, the people that most of us descend from heard the gospel, our ancestors.

  48. And then ever since then, a lot of the time, it's been moving west.

  49. It came from Europe to America to South America.

  50. Now it's wheeling back around and hitting Asia again.

  51. But God and his providence for some reason chose to comport the gospel message through Greco-Roman culture.

  52. And at this time, the Roman Empire was in three, arguably four continents at the time, including Africa, Asia, and Europe.

  53. And now Paul taking the gospel to Europe.

  54. And as Nathan mentioned last week, it kind of started in Philippi, a Roman colony in the heart of Macedonia.

  55. And as he said last week, and again, I'll spare you all this, it was Philip of Macedon II, Alexander the Great's father,

  56. who the city was named after.

  57. And it was very much about as Roman as you can get.

  58. In Philippi had an amphitheater, a forum, an acropolis, which is like a fortified hill, an agora, a marketplace.

  59. So it was like a very picturesque.

  60. They called it the Little Rome.

  61. So it looked very much like that.

  62. And settled by a lot of soldiers that had been discharged from service after the battle from Octavian or Caesar Augustus against, you know, Anthony and his baby cakes, Cleopatra.

  63. After that, like a lot of them, went and lived in Philippi.

  64. So there was a lot of strong Roman people in this area.

  65. And as he said last week, there probably wasn't enough Jews there to actually even form a synagogue.

  66. So that's why we saw them going to the river to pray and to gather.

  67. And through his mercy, God saved Lydia and some others that were there with her.

  68. And so this is a great setup.

  69. So they just kind of stay there and they're kind of continuing their ministry in Philippi.

  70. And this is where we'll get into our text.

  71. Just join me and look at verse 16.

  72. Excuse me.

  73. So, sorry.

  74. We're going to break this up in like three different scenes, if you would, of a story.

  75. But scene one is we're going to see in verse 16 through 24.

  76. Scene one is the predicament.

  77. There's so many predicaments that we face.

  78. So this is the predicament, 16 through 24.

  79. It says,

  80. And she kept doing this for many days.

  81. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, that's my favorite Bible word, by the way,

  82. hacked off, perturbed, turned around and said to the spirit, so not the girl, the spirit,

  83. and said,

  84. I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.

  85. And it came out that very hour.

  86. So great news, right?

  87. I mean, like deliverance.

  88. An amazing thing.

  89. Nope.

  90. Bad news for Paul and Silas.

  91. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone,

  92. they seized Paul and Silas,

  93. dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.

  94. And when they had brought them to the magistrates,

  95. they said,

  96. These men are Jews,

  97. and they are disturbing our city.

  98. They advocate customs that are not lawful for us Romans,

  99. as Romans to accept our practice.

  100. The crowd joined in the attack,

  101. in attacking them.

  102. Excuse me.

  103. And the magistrates tore their garments off of them,

  104. and gave them orders to be beaten with rods.

  105. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them,

  106. they threw them into the prison,

  107. ordering the jailer to keep them safely.

  108. Having received this order,

  109. he put them in the inner prison,

  110. and fastened their feet in the stocks.

  111. So, you have Paul and Silas just sort of going about their daily routine.

  112. They're there to love.

  113. They're there to serve.

  114. They're there to deliver the gospel message in a peaceful manner.

  115. They're there with God's direction.

  116. God sent them there, if you remember that.

  117. He sent them to this area.

  118. They're there with His authority,

  119. His power.

  120. They mean no harm, only good.

  121. And they're on their way.

  122. You know, they just get up in the morning,

  123. on their way over to the river,

  124. to spend some time in prayer together.

  125. You know, birds chirping, sun shining.

  126. You know, a great, great morning to be alive.

  127. And on the way, they meet this slave girl,

  128. who was possessed by a demon, more likely.

  129. And this slave girl,

  130. the word for divination here,

  131. is the word python.

  132. And so, it was a picture of,

  133. you ever heard of the, in Greek mythology,

  134. the oracle, the Delphic oracle,

  135. where a lot of the Greek kings and Greek generals

  136. would send their people to find out

  137. they were going to have victory or defeat in battle.

  138. So, she was from this area.

  139. And python really was the name of this dragon

  140. or serpent that guarded the Delphi oracle.

  141. And, at least in Greek mythology,

  142. the god Apollo had come and slain this dragon

  143. or slain this snake.

  144. And now he spoke through the Delphi oracle.

  145. So, it was seen as a,

  146. she had a spirit of prophecy.

  147. But make no mistake,

  148. this is a deep, dark,

  149. ancient, pagan, demonic practice

  150. that she was involved with.

  151. It's this idea of soothsaying,

  152. fortune-telling.

  153. I want you to know, guys,

  154. that stuff's real, okay?

  155. It's real, but it's not of the Lord at all.

  156. This girl had this deep history.

  157. And she was the new age lady ahead of her time.

  158. She would have a 1-800 number today.

  159. So, you should know, though,

  160. if you're curious,

  161. God's people have been forbidden

  162. to deal with that kind of stuff.

  163. Deuteronomy 18, verse 10,

    Deuteronomy 18:10

  164. 1 Samuel 28, 8.

  165. Yet, know that she has this real,

  166. deep, dark, spiritual connection.

  167. And that spirit in her

  168. recognizes that these are servants of the light.

  169. They weren't going around and saying this.

  170. They weren't wearing Christian t-shirts

  171. saying we're the apostles and we're here.

  172. This spirit recognized who they were.

  173. She had this spiritual connection.

  174. These men are servants of the Most High God

  175. who proclaim to you the way of salvation.

  176. Isn't that awesome?

  177. That dark, demonic spirit in her saw that

  178. and was saying that?

  179. She's like,

  180. If you think I'm awesome

  181. and my spiritual connections are great,

  182. don't.

  183. These men have the real answer.

  184. These men have the way of salvation

  185. and they're proclaiming it to you now.

  186. So, this wasn't a really quick,

  187. short introduction.

  188. It says she kept doing this for many days.

  189. So, all day Monday, all day Tuesday,

  190. all day Wednesday, on and on.

  191. And then finally,

  192. it says that Paul became greatly annoyed.

  193. So, hacked off.

  194. He was just like,

  195. Yes, we are servants of the Most High God,

  196. but please just stop with the announcement.

  197. And, kind of turns around

  198. and just says to her,

  199. Like, come out.

  200. Commanded the Spirit in the name of Jesus Christ

  201. to come out.

  202. So, and she was delivered.

  203. So, that's great.

  204. I mean, awesome.

  205. But at least you would think

  206. all these great things are happening.

  207. But then, turns around

  208. and these slave girl's owners,

  209. who've been making money off of her,

  210. seek greedy and brutal vengeance

  211. against Paul and Silas.

  212. So, they were exploiting her.

  213. Using her.

  214. Isn't it interesting?

  215. Stop and think about this.

  216. Isn't it interesting throughout

  217. the book of Acts particularly,

  218. but the Bible in general,

  219. that the desire for money,

  220. success, profit,

  221. always is working against the gospel.

  222. You ever notice that?

  223. Simon the Magician

  224. in chapter 8.

  225. Demetrius the Silversmith

  226. in chapter 19.

  227. Isn't that interesting?

  228. This is another example.

  229. The gospel is hurting their means

  230. of making a lot of money

  231. in a sinful manner.

  232. So, they seek this vengeance on them.

  233. It says they drag them

  234. into the marketplace

  235. before the rulers

  236. and before the magistrates.

  237. So, in Roman law,

  238. like magistrates are put there

  239. to carry out civil authority.

  240. They were kind of like

  241. the arm of Caesar

  242. in the Roman provinces.

  243. And there was two usually

  244. assigned to each province

  245. at this time

  246. in the first century A.D.

  247. And they,

  248. these men lied.

  249. They lied.

  250. They bore false witness

  251. against Paul and Silas.

  252. They said,

  253. these Jews

  254. are disturbing us.

  255. That word disturbing

  256. means to cause an uproar,

  257. like to cause exceedingly

  258. great trouble, chaos.

  259. Is that what they're really doing?

  260. Not at all.

  261. And they're advocating customs,

  262. not lawful for us Romans

  263. to accept.

  264. So, understand that

  265. in some degree,

  266. Jews had kind of

  267. already gained a reputation,

  268. at least in the Roman Empire,

  269. for people who don't want

  270. to submit to the law of Caesar,

  271. the rule of Caesar.

  272. Not long after this,

  273. Emperor Claudius,

  274. he expelled all the Jews

  275. from Rome.

  276. That's in history books.

  277. It's actually interesting

  278. that soon in Acts,

  279. like you actually see

  280. that Luke says

  281. that same thing.

  282. Priscilla and Aquila

  283. were kicked out of Rome

  284. because they were Jews.

  285. And,

  286. basically saying,

  287. these punks

  288. aren't from around here.

  289. They're bringing trouble,

  290. this nonsense,

  291. from Jerusalem.

  292. And they're saying

  293. all this stuff

  294. against Rome.

  295. And really,

  296. that's not what they're doing

  297. at all.

  298. So then this unruly crowd

  299. kind of joins in,

  300. like, yeah,

  301. like they're here

  302. disturbing us.

  303. And they kind of

  304. join in the attack.

  305. You ever just try

  306. to go the extra mile

  307. to love somebody

  308. and to, like,

  309. really sacrifice yourself

  310. for their well-being,

  311. then all of a sudden

  312. they're, like,

  313. coming at you with knives

  314. and hating you?

  315. So it doesn't stop there.

  316. This fake trial

  317. results in severe punishment.

  318. So,

  319. you ever thought about this?

  320. I think about

  321. Christ

  322. and some of the other

  323. apostles that we see

  324. going through this kind of,

  325. we tend to overlook this.

  326. Do you know how intimidating

  327. like an angry crowd

  328. can be when they're

  329. coming at you,

  330. stripping you down,

  331. yelling at you,

  332. beating you down?

  333. It's a scary,

  334. traumatizing thing.

  335. That's,

  336. don't overlook that.

  337. So they had that happen.

  338. But then they were

  339. beaten with rods.

  340. What is that about?

  341. So throughout

  342. the Roman Empire,

  343. magistrates

  344. were followed around

  345. by these little attendants

  346. who carried these

  347. bundles of sticks.

  348. And

  349. to kind of

  350. serve as a

  351. picture of their

  352. authority from Rome.

  353. And they would

  354. beat people

  355. with them.

  356. So they were,

  357. they took the wooden rods

  358. and inflicted

  359. not just

  360. a couple,

  361. a brief spanking,

  362. but like

  363. severe blows.

  364. Inflicted many blows

  365. upon Paul and Silas.

  366. So it couldn't get worse,

  367. right?

  368. But it did.

  369. After that,

  370. they threw them

  371. into the prison

  372. and ordered the jailer

  373. to keep them safely.

  374. Put them in the

  375. inner prison,

  376. so not just

  377. the nice,

  378. you know,

  379. prison with bed

  380. and breakfast.

  381. They're like the

  382. inner dungeon,

  383. the dark,

  384. cold,

  385. wet,

  386. damp place

  387. where the rats are.

  388. and fastened

  389. them in the

  390. stocks.

  391. So very

  392. uncomfortable,

  393. painful.

  394. So wow,

  395. like some swift,

  396. harsh

  397. justice,

  398. but a

  399. travesty of

  400. justice,

  401. injustice.

  402. So,

  403. think about this

  404. later on,

  405. like Paul says

  406. in 1 Thessalonians,

  407. we were shamefully

  408. treated

  409. in Philippi.

  410. So imagine

  411. just sitting there

  412. in the stocks

  413. and in the cold,

  414. the dark dungeon,

  415. just kind of

  416. the shock

  417. wearing off a little bit

  418. and just sort of

  419. sitting there

  420. dealing with that.

  421. So in their place

  422. right now,

  423. what would you be

  424. thinking?

  425. What would be

  426. crossing your mind?

  427. How are you

  428. processing that

  429. sitting there

  430. in that dungeon?

  431. Many of us

  432. will be saying,

  433. why,

  434. oh Lord?

  435. God,

  436. can we just

  437. kind of step back

  438. and review the day?

  439. Like we came here

  440. with the best

  441. of intentions

  442. to love people,

  443. to serve them,

  444. to give them the gospel,

  445. to lay our lives down.

  446. You know,

  447. you used us

  448. to bring salvation

  449. to Lydia

  450. and her household.

  451. You used us

  452. to deliver

  453. to a slave girl

  454. from demonic oppression.

  455. Now we don't even

  456. have anything

  457. but the clothes

  458. on our backs.

  459. And now that's

  460. been taken

  461. even away from us.

  462. In case you

  463. haven't noticed,

  464. things down here

  465. have gotten

  466. really,

  467. really rough.

  468. So where are you?

  469. What is going on?

  470. We are here

  471. on your behalf.

  472. What is happening?

  473. We've been falsely

  474. accused.

  475. We've been arrested.

  476. We've been beaten

  477. with our eyes.

  478. Thrown into the dungeon.

  479. Now we're cold

  480. and naked

  481. and lonely.

  482. Why is this happening?

  483. Ever been there?

  484. So suddenly,

  485. this great God

  486. that we sing about

  487. and that we proclaim

  488. isn't so great anymore.

  489. We've shrunk him down

  490. to almost a little God

  491. and we put him

  492. across the table

  493. and we say,

  494. you owe me

  495. an explanation

  496. and this isn't right

  497. and you need to fix it.

  498. But arrogantly,

  499. we seek to bring him

  500. down on our level.

  501. Not many places

  502. to turn today,

  503. but keep your hand

  504. there in Acts.

  505. Turn to Psalm 44.

  506. Psalm 44.

  507. And so I want you

  508. to know

  509. that

  510. when you're going

  511. through

  512. suffering,

  513. when you're going

  514. through

  515. difficult times

  516. that you don't

  517. understand,

  518. I want you to know

  519. it's okay

  520. to ask God

  521. why.

  522. Okay?

  523. But also be aware

  524. that

  525. it's really

  526. the spirit

  527. or the manner

  528. in which we ask him

  529. why.

  530. Alright?

  531. So,

  532. this kind of stuff

  533. is all over

  534. in the scripture,

  535. particularly in the Psalms.

  536. But,

  537. even in the Psalms,

  538. you see

  539. this

  540. unshakable confidence

  541. that even though

  542. I don't understand

  543. and I'm asking you

  544. why,

  545. I recognize

  546. that you are still there

  547. even though

  548. I can't feel you there.

  549. And I'm putting

  550. my trust in you.

  551. So it's a humble asking,

  552. not an arrogant,

  553. angry,

  554. bitter asking.

  555. So Psalm 44.

  556. Look down at verse

  557. 14

  558. and just picture

  559. Paul and Silas.

  560. Picture

  561. your life.

  562. So you have made us

  563. a byword

  564. among the nations,

  565. a laughing stock

  566. among the peoples.

  567. all the day long

  568. and shame

  569. and shame

  570. has covered my face

  571. at the sound

  572. of the taunter

  573. and the reviler,

  574. at the sight

  575. of the enemy

  576. and the avenger.

  577. all of this

  578. has come upon us

  579. though we

  580. have not forgotten

  581. you

  582. and we have not

  583. been false

  584. to your covenant.

  585. Our hearts

  586. have not turned

  587. back

  588. nor have our

  589. steps departed

  590. from your way.

  591. So they're saying

  592. like we've

  593. trusted you,

  594. we've followed you,

  595. we're here,

  596. we haven't left

  597. yet you have

  598. broken us

  599. in the place

  600. of jackals

  601. and covered us

  602. with the shadow

  603. of death.

  604. Jump ahead

  605. to verse 23.

  606. Awake.

  607. Why are you

  608. sleeping,

  609. O Lord?

  610. Browse yourself.

  611. Do not reject

  612. us forever.

  613. Why do you

  614. hide your face?

  615. Why do you

  616. forget our

  617. affliction

  618. and oppression?

  619. For our soul

  620. is bowed down

  621. in the dust.

  622. Our belly

  623. clings to the ground.

  624. So here it is.

  625. Rise up,

  626. come to our help,

  627. redeem us

  628. for the sake

  629. of your

  630. steadfast love.

  631. So even though

  632. they don't understand,

  633. they're asking why,

  634. at the very end

  635. they say,

  636. redeem us

  637. for the sake

  638. of your

  639. steadfast love.

  640. Rise up

  641. and come

  642. and help us.

  643. So,

  644. we've all been there,

  645. some more than others,

  646. and you will

  647. before you breathe

  648. your last.

  649. You'll ask why.

  650. So,

  651. this leads

  652. to the second scene,

  653. number two,

  654. scene two,

  655. the deliverance.

  656. Back in Acts,

  657. back in Acts 16.

  658. You see this

  659. in verse 25

  660. through 34.

  661. So,

  662. about midnight,

  663. Paul and Silas

  664. were praying,

  665. and he's like,

  666. yeah,

  667. I'll be praying too,

  668. like God,

  669. get me out of this,

  670. here's how you're

  671. going to fix it.

  672. They were praying

  673. and singing hymns

  674. to God,

  675. and the prisoners

  676. were listening

  677. to them,

  678. and suddenly

  679. there was a great

  680. earthquake.

  681. Wow,

  682. amazing timing.

  683. So,

  684. the foundation

  685. of the prisons

  686. were shaken,

  687. and immediately

  688. all the doors

  689. were opened,

  690. and everyone's bonds

  691. were unfastened.

  692. And when the jailer

  693. woke and saw

  694. the prison doors

  695. were open,

  696. he drew his sword

  697. and was about

  698. to kill himself,

  699. supposing that

  700. the prisoners

  701. had escaped.

  702. Sorry.

  703. But Paul cried

  704. with a loud voice,

  705. do not harm

  706. yourself,

  707. for we are all

  708. here.

  709. And the jailer

  710. called for lights

  711. and rushed in

  712. with trembling

  713. and with fear.

  714. He fell down

  715. before Paul

  716. and Silas.

  717. Then he brought

  718. them out

  719. and said,

  720. sirs,

  721. what must I do

  722. to be saved?

  723. And they said,

  724. believe in the

  725. Lord Jesus

  726. and you shall

  727. be saved,

  728. you and your

  729. household.

  730. And they spoke

  731. the word of the

  732. Lord to him

  733. and to all

  734. who were in

  735. his house.

  736. And he took

  737. them in the same

  738. hour that night

  739. and washed

  740. their wombs,

  741. and he was

  742. baptized at once,

  743. he and his

  744. family.

  745. Then he brought

  746. them up into

  747. the house

  748. and set food

  749. before them,

  750. and he rejoiced

  751. with his

  752. entire household

  753. that he

  754. believed in

  755. God.

  756. So deliverance,

  757. double meaning

  758. deliverance,

  759. not just Paul

  760. and Silas,

  761. physical

  762. deliverance,

  763. but this

  764. man's and his

  765. family's deliverance

  766. from the

  767. slavery and

  768. death of sin.

  769. So they

  770. praised him

  771. in their

  772. pain,

  773. right?

  774. There's no

  775. guarantee they

  776. were going to

  777. get out of

  778. there.

  779. They pretty

  780. much set

  781. themselves

  782. ready to

  783. die.

  784. They just

  785. went through

  786. all that

  787. oppressive

  788. stuff,

  789. and then about

  790. midnight,

  791. so I almost

  792. just don't

  793. want to

  794. overlook that.

  795. Think about

  796. how Luke

  797. could be

  798. saying about

  799. midnight,

  800. you know,

  801. that dark

  802. hour when

  803. the adrenaline

  804. is worn

  805. off and

  806. you're just

  807. sitting there

  808. dealing with

  809. reality,

  810. you're thinking

  811. over just what

  812. happened.

  813. praying,

  814. probably

  815. getting me

  816. out of

  817. this,

  818. but no,

  819. they were

  820. praying and

  821. singing hymns

  822. to God,

  823. right?

  824. Amid their

  825. suffering,

  826. our brothers,

  827. Paul and

  828. Silas,

  829. experienced this

  830. overwhelming

  831. presence of

  832. the Holy

  833. Spirit in

  834. their lives

  835. with this

  836. great joy

  837. that's

  838. inexpressible.

  839. Remember when

  840. Paul was

  841. writing to the

  842. Philippians many

  843. years later?

  844. Peter, I

  845. wonder if

  846. he even

  847. thought about

  848. this experience

  849. as he wrote

  850. to them.

  851. Can you just

  852. hear him

  853. praying?

  854. It's been a

  855. painful day,

  856. Lord, but we

  857. rejoice in

  858. you, O

  859. !

  860. Lord, because

  861. you are not

  862. far, you are

  863. near, so we

  864. will not be

  865. anxious for

  866. anything, but

  867. in everything.

  868. We will turn to

  869. you in prayer

  870. and rejoice at

  871. all times and be

  872. thankful.

  873. And now your

  874. peace is

  875. flooding our

  876. souls.

  877. Sound familiar?

  878. Philippians 4,

  879. 4 through 7.

  880. So, I

  881. believe that

  882. happened and

  883. that just

  884. kind of erupted

  885. into praise.

  886. It erupted

  887. into glory to

  888. God.

  889. And then this

  890. supernatural

  891. earthquake

  892. happened and

  893. their chains

  894. fell off.

  895. So, quick

  896. break and run

  897. for it, right?

  898. Nope.

  899. They stayed

  900. there.

  901. and they

  902. called this

  903. Macedonian

  904. jailer in who

  905. was about to

  906. kill himself

  907. because his

  908. punishment would

  909. have been

  910. death.

  911. So, he

  912. thinks, I'm

  913. in trouble

  914. either way.

  915. I need to

  916. go ahead and

  917. take my life

  918. which had been

  919. seen as an

  920. honorable thing

  921. to do in

  922. that culture

  923. instead of

  924. bearing the

  925. shame.

  926. And they

  927. stop him and

  928. say, wait,

  929. stop.

  930. We're all

  931. here.

  932. Don't harm

  933. yourself.

  934. So, this

  935. proud jailer

  936. came in with

  937. just fear and

  938. trembling, of

  939. course, right?

  940. And he took

  941. them out to

  942. his house and

  943. then he

  944. asked the

  945. question, sir,

  946. what must I

  947. do to be

  948. saved?

  949. Not, well,

  950. become a member

  951. of the church,

  952. be baptized,

  953. and sign a

  954. card, and

  955. you're good for

  956. the rest of

  957. eternity, but

  958. and go get

  959. busy doing

  960. things for

  961. Jesus, but

  962. believe in the

  963. Lord Jesus and

  964. you'll be saved.

  965. God's

  966. strong,

  967. overwhelming,

  968. powerful belief

  969. and faith that

  970. changes how you

  971. live, not just

  972. an acknowledgement,

  973. but a deep

  974. belief in your

  975. heart that

  976. changes how you

  977. live.

  978. And so, he

  979. believed, he

  980. gave his life to

  981. Christ.

  982. The jailer

  983. washed their

  984. wombs.

  985. One of the

  986. early church

  987. fathers said,

  988. the jailer

  989. washed and

  990. was washed.

  991. He washed

  992. them from

  993. their stripes

  994. and was

  995. himself washed

  996. from his

  997. sins.

  998. The whole

  999. family ended

  1000. up believing

  1001. in the gospel

  1002. and they

  1003. rejoiced.

  1004. This really

  1005. is a cool

  1006. word that's

  1007. actually not

  1008. used in other

  1009. Greek literature

  1010. at all this

  1011. time.

  1012. It's not

  1013. mentioned

  1014. anywhere.

  1015. So it's

  1016. this idea

  1017. of deep

  1018. spiritual joy.

  1019. They

  1020. rejoiced.

  1021. Wow.

  1022. was then

  1023. scene three.

  1024. Number three,

  1025. the outcome,

  1026. verse 35

  1027. through 40,

  1028. the rest of

  1029. our story.

  1030. But when it

  1031. was day,

  1032. the magistrates

  1033. sent the

  1034. police,

  1035. that's an

  1036. American word,

  1037. sent the

  1038. police,

  1039. the popo,

  1040. let those

  1041. men go.

  1042. And the

  1043. jailer reported

  1044. these words to

  1045. Paul saying,

  1046. the magistrates

  1047. have sent to

  1048. let you go.

  1049. So they

  1050. actually went

  1051. back to the

  1052. prison,

  1053. right?

  1054. They sent to

  1055. let you go.

  1056. Therefore,

  1057. come out now

  1058. and go in

  1059. peace.

  1060. But Paul

  1061. said to

  1062. them,

  1063. they have

  1064. beaten us

  1065. publicly,

  1066. uncondemned,

  1067. men who are

  1068. Roman citizens

  1069. and have

  1070. thrown us

  1071. into the

  1072. prison.

  1073. And now

  1074. do they

  1075. throw us

  1076. out secretly?

  1077. No.

  1078. Let them

  1079. come themselves

  1080. and take us

  1081. out.

  1082. And the

  1083. police reported

  1084. these words

  1085. to the

  1086. magistrate.

  1087. And they

  1088. were afraid.

  1089. Yeah.

  1090. When they

  1091. heard that

  1092. they were

  1093. Roman citizens,

  1094. so they

  1095. came and

  1096. apologized to

  1097. them and

  1098. took them

  1099. out and

  1100. asked them

  1101. to leave

  1102. the city.

  1103. So they

  1104. went out

  1105. of the

  1106. prison,

  1107. visited

  1108. Lydia,

  1109. and when

  1110. they had

  1111. seen the

  1112. brothers,

  1113. they were

  1114. encouraged.

  1115. They

  1116. encouraged

  1117. them and

  1118. then

  1119. departed.

  1120. So the

  1121. magistrates

  1122. had a chance

  1123. to kind of

  1124. reflect on

  1125. what happened

  1126. and they

  1127. were in

  1128. serious

  1129. trouble.

  1130. So they

  1131. secretly

  1132. ordered the

  1133. release of

  1134. Paul and

  1135. Silas.

  1136. and why

  1137. Paul responded

  1138. this way,

  1139. we don't

  1140. exactly know.

  1141. Maybe they

  1142. thought,

  1143. the magistrates

  1144. thought,

  1145. they've

  1146. suffered

  1147. enough,

  1148. let's just

  1149. let them

  1150. go.

  1151. But it

  1152. seems like

  1153. they were

  1154. scared when

  1155. they found

  1156. out they

  1157. were Roman

  1158. citizens.

  1159. And that

  1160. terrified them.

  1161. So they

  1162. were just

  1163. like, hey,

  1164. just tell

  1165. them to

  1166. go.

  1167. Tell

  1168. them no

  1169. hard

  1170. feelings.

  1171. keep

  1172. this on

  1173. the down

  1174. low.

  1175. Kind of

  1176. go out

  1177. the back

  1178. door,

  1179. please.

  1180. We're

  1181. cool,

  1182. right?

  1183. Just that.

  1184. But Paul

  1185. says, no.

  1186. Let them

  1187. come

  1188. themselves

  1189. and walk

  1190. us out.

  1191. And I

  1192. want to

  1193. point this

  1194. out.

  1195. I don't

  1196. think this

  1197. was because

  1198. Paul was

  1199. angry and

  1200. seeking

  1201. vengeance on

  1202. them.

  1203. I think

  1204. he was

  1205. really

  1206. worried

  1207. about how

  1208. the church

  1209. and

  1210. believers

  1211. would be

  1212. perceived

  1213. in the

  1214. Roman

  1215. world.

  1216. He

  1217. wanted to

  1218. make

  1219. sure

  1220. that.

  1221. They

  1222. were

  1223. seen as

  1224. good

  1225. citizens,

  1226. as

  1227. people

  1228. submissive

  1229. to the

  1230. authorities,

  1231. not

  1232. troublemakers.

  1233. And so

  1234. he was

  1235. like, no,

  1236. you tell

  1237. them to

  1238. come and

  1239. walk us

  1240. out so

  1241. that everyone

  1242. will know

  1243. that we

  1244. were not

  1245. guilty of

  1246. the crimes

  1247. that we

  1248. were accused

  1249. of.

  1250. But Roman

  1251. law could

  1252. have permitted

  1253. Paul to

  1254. really

  1255. seriously

  1256. bring down

  1257. the system

  1258. on these

  1259. men.

  1260. Law during

  1261. the first

  1262. century protected

  1263. them from

  1264. punishment,

  1265. from

  1266. execution,

  1267. or even

  1268. torture without

  1269. trial.

  1270. So they

  1271. had even

  1272. the right

  1273. to appeal

  1274. to a

  1275. higher court

  1276. in Rome

  1277. itself,

  1278. which he

  1279. does do

  1280. later on.

  1281. Paul says

  1282. that he

  1283. was born

  1284. a citizen,

  1285. right?

  1286. So he

  1287. carried this

  1288. with him.

  1289. He wasn't

  1290. just a Jew,

  1291. but he was

  1292. a Roman

  1293. citizen.

  1294. So though

  1295. many believers,

  1296. right,

  1297. they didn't

  1298. want them to be,

  1299. many Jews were

  1300. considered as

  1301. troublemakers,

  1302. he didn't want

  1303. that stench

  1304. kind of carrying

  1305. !

  1306. on to the

  1307. believers in

  1308. the empire.

  1309. So that's

  1310. why I really

  1311. think that he

  1312. decided to

  1313. just kind of

  1314. let it go,

  1315. but not let

  1316. it go.

  1317. So exercise

  1318. your rights

  1319. as citizens

  1320. in America

  1321. underneath the

  1322. kingdom of

  1323. God,

  1324. underneath

  1325. mercy.

  1326. Don't just

  1327. say,

  1328. it's my

  1329. rights,

  1330. I'm going

  1331. to do it

  1332. anyway.

  1333. Think about

  1334. God's

  1335. purposes.

  1336. And then we

  1337. see the

  1338. church was

  1339. strengthened,

  1340. right?

  1341. Of course.

  1342. What a heck

  1343. of a story

  1344. that would

  1345. have been.

  1346. We're like

  1347. chilling at

  1348. Lydia's house

  1349. and Paul

  1350. and Silas

  1351. come,

  1352. you know,

  1353. really looking

  1354. rough,

  1355. and they

  1356. encouraged the

  1357. brothers.

  1358. And what a

  1359. story that

  1360. would have

  1361. been to

  1362. share with

  1363. the brothers.

  1364. So some

  1365. application from

  1366. our story.

  1367. When life

  1368. trials come,

  1369. and we're

  1370. tempted to

  1371. ask,

  1372. you know,

  1373. like,

  1374. why?

  1375. Oh,

  1376. Lord.

  1377. You've got

  1378. to remember

  1379. that we

  1380. are the

  1381. most finite,

  1382. short-sighted

  1383. creatures

  1384. imaginable.

  1385. We cannot

  1386. see tomorrow.

  1387. And

  1388. very limited

  1389. perspective.

  1390. And we're

  1391. tempted to

  1392. believe in

  1393. those moments

  1394. that God

  1395. is not

  1396. sovereign and

  1397. He's not

  1398. good.

  1399. Right?

  1400. I hope

  1401. you follow

  1402. my analogy

  1403. here.

  1404. But life

  1405. to us is

  1406. like,

  1407. most of

  1408. you,

  1409. some of

  1410. you may

  1411. know what

  1412. a mosaic

  1413. is.

  1414. It's like

  1415. a big

  1416. picture that's

  1417. made up of

  1418. a lot of

  1419. different smaller

  1420. pictures.

  1421. So when you

  1422. stand back,

  1423. you see

  1424. the whole

  1425. deal.

  1426. And life

  1427. is like

  1428. that to

  1429. us.

  1430. We have

  1431. these little

  1432. snapshots,

  1433. these glimpses

  1434. in the moment

  1435. that don't make

  1436. sense.

  1437. like, I

  1438. don't make any

  1439. sense of

  1440. what I have

  1441. right here

  1442. at all.

  1443. And in

  1444. those difficult

  1445. moments where

  1446. you have

  1447. those snapshots,

  1448. you have to

  1449. believe that

  1450. they do

  1451. fit into

  1452. God's

  1453. bigger picture.

  1454. And He's

  1455. always doing

  1456. that.

  1457. He's always

  1458. moving and

  1459. creating this

  1460. beautiful mosaic

  1461. that testifies of

  1462. His glory and

  1463. His grace.

  1464. So in moments

  1465. of doubt,

  1466. remember God's

  1467. providence,

  1468. that He works

  1469. all things,

  1470. all things,

  1471. after the

  1472. counsel of

  1473. His will.

  1474. Ephesians

  1475. 1.11.

  1476. It says of

  1477. Jesus in

  1478. Hebrews 1.3,

  1479. He upholds the

  1480. universe by

  1481. the word of

  1482. His power.

  1483. So this

  1484. stuff did not

  1485. just happen

  1486. when God was

  1487. gone or on

  1488. vacation.

  1489. He ordained

  1490. it.

  1491. He allowed

  1492. it.

  1493. And we

  1494. always can't

  1495. just see it,

  1496. but just

  1497. remember the

  1498. word providence.

  1499. If you're

  1500. looking for a

  1501. good definition,

  1502. Puritan

  1503. pastor Ezekiel

  1504. Hopkins said,

  1505. Providence is

  1506. an act of

  1507. God,

  1508. whereby according

  1509. to His

  1510. eternal and

  1511. most wise

  1512. counsel,

  1513. preserves and

  1514. governs all

  1515. things,

  1516. and directs

  1517. them to all

  1518. their ends,

  1519. but chiefly to

  1520. His own

  1521. glory.

  1522. So know

  1523. that life is

  1524. not about

  1525. you.

  1526. It's not.

  1527. It's not

  1528. about me.

  1529. When you

  1530. really ponder

  1531. who you are

  1532. before God,

  1533. you will

  1534. realize you

  1535. have no

  1536. rights at

  1537. all.

  1538. And anything

  1539. you have is

  1540. only by His

  1541. goodness,

  1542. only by His

  1543. grace.

  1544. That keeps

  1545. me from

  1546. asking why

  1547. a lot of

  1548. the time,

  1549. because I

  1550. know I

  1551. deserve far

  1552. worse than

  1553. I have

  1554. gotten,

  1555. infinitely

  1556. worse.

  1557. So know

  1558. that when

  1559. you're living

  1560. in that

  1561. little picture

  1562. that God

  1563. is directing

  1564. all things

  1565. toward their

  1566. ends,

  1567. but chiefly

  1568. to the

  1569. glory of

  1570. His name.

  1571. so some

  1572. things,

  1573. maybe another

  1574. message on

  1575. this another

  1576. time,

  1577. kind of,

  1578. we could do

  1579. a whole

  1580. message on

  1581. what are

  1582. those things

  1583. that God

  1584. is always

  1585. doing,

  1586. no matter

  1587. what,

  1588. no matter

  1589. how,

  1590. what your

  1591. situation

  1592. looks like,

  1593. what is He

  1594. always doing,

  1595. we could have

  1596. a whole message

  1597. on that,

  1598. but just from

  1599. our story,

  1600. here's one

  1601. thing,

  1602. God is

  1603. always seeking

  1604. to receive

  1605. praise in

  1606. dark places.

  1607. Very easy

  1608. to praise God

  1609. right here,

  1610. and seeing

  1611. His excellence,

  1612. but when we

  1613. go through

  1614. dark places

  1615. and trials,

  1616. His supreme

  1617. worthiness is

  1618. really seen

  1619. in those moments

  1620. when we praise

  1621. Him and we

  1622. trust Him,

  1623. and we're

  1624. saying to

  1625. everyone around

  1626. us that this

  1627. isn't what's

  1628. controlling me,

  1629. God is

  1630. controlling me,

  1631. and I want

  1632. to show all

  1633. creation that

  1634. He reigns,

  1635. that He's

  1636. sovereign in

  1637. this moment,

  1638. and so when

  1639. you see Paul

  1640. and Silas

  1641. doing that,

  1642. they're praying

  1643. and seeing

  1644. hymns to

  1645. God,

  1646. who do you

  1647. think is

  1648. getting the

  1649. glory for

  1650. that?

  1651. Because all

  1652. the men,

  1653. it says the

  1654. men in the

  1655. jail were

  1656. listening to

  1657. them,

  1658. like what is

  1659. that about

  1660. down there?

  1661. Crazy.

  1662. So often we

  1663. look at God

  1664. and we want

  1665. Him to change

  1666. our what?

  1667. Our

  1668. circumstances,

  1669. circumstances,

  1670. but what's

  1671. cool is God

  1672. is often more

  1673. focused on

  1674. changing us

  1675. in the midst

  1676. of the

  1677. circumstances.

  1678. So look to

  1679. God when that

  1680. stuff happens,

  1681. take your eyes

  1682. off the

  1683. circumstances,

  1684. and He

  1685. either will

  1686. choose to

  1687. calm the

  1688. circumstances,

  1689. or He'll

  1690. calm you in

  1691. the midst

  1692. of the

  1693. circumstances,

  1694. usually what

  1695. He likes to

  1696. do.

  1697. So as we

  1698. praise God,

  1699. He changes

  1700. us, He

  1701. fills our

  1702. souls with

  1703. hope,

  1704. with joy,

  1705. with peace.

  1706. Just a few

  1707. more things

  1708. for you.

  1709. In those

  1710. little

  1711. snapshots,

  1712. God is

  1713. always seeking

  1714. to save

  1715. the lost

  1716. and bring

  1717. them to

  1718. salvation.

  1719. This might

  1720. be heavy

  1721. for some

  1722. of you.

  1723. God is

  1724. committed

  1725. to bring

  1726. salvation

  1727. to His

  1728. people no

  1729. matter what

  1730. it takes.

  1731. And He's

  1732. providentially,

  1733. He places

  1734. His people

  1735. in places

  1736. of suffering

  1737. and death

  1738. in order

  1739. to call

  1740. lost souls

  1741. into His

  1742. fold.

  1743. A Bulgarian

  1744. pastor in

  1745. 1985 was

  1746. arrested and

  1747. imprisoned by

  1748. the communists

  1749. for preaching

  1750. to his

  1751. congregation.

  1752. His first

  1753. name was

  1754. Heristero.

  1755. This is

  1756. something he

  1757. said.

  1758. So when

  1759. they threw

  1760. him in

  1761. jail,

  1762. this often

  1763. happens to

  1764. believers.

  1765. They're

  1766. thrown in

  1767. jail and

  1768. they become

  1769. such a

  1770. nuisance

  1771. to the

  1772. jailers

  1773. and the

  1774. people in

  1775. there because

  1776. they continue

  1777. preaching the

  1778. gospel to

  1779. the jailers,

  1780. to those who

  1781. are holding

  1782. them captive

  1783. as well as

  1784. to the

  1785. prisoners.

  1786. And he

  1787. said this,

  1788. both prisoners

  1789. and jailers

  1790. asked many

  1791. questions and

  1792. it turned out

  1793. that we had

  1794. a more fruitful

  1795. ministry there

  1796. in prison than

  1797. we ever could

  1798. have had just

  1799. inside church

  1800. walls.

  1801. God was

  1802. better served

  1803. by our

  1804. presence in

  1805. prison than

  1806. if we had

  1807. been free.

  1808. I mean,

  1809. do we think

  1810. that way?

  1811. Let's see

  1812. what I do

  1813. with this

  1814. thing.

  1815. It's

  1816. sitting there

  1817. somewhere.

  1818. On your

  1819. bulletin,

  1820. there's a

  1821. quote by my

  1822. man,

  1823. Sinclair,

  1824. !

  1825. In

  1826. relationship to

  1827. this,

  1828. he said,

  1829. God doesn't

  1830. exist for

  1831. you and

  1832. for me.

  1833. Hear that.

  1834. But rather

  1835. God exists to

  1836. fulfill his

  1837. own glorious

  1838. purposes.

  1839. It is so

  1840. true in

  1841. scripture and

  1842. in the lives

  1843. of the

  1844. Christians of

  1845. whom we

  1846. read in

  1847. history that

  1848. what we see

  1849. God doing

  1850. is not just

  1851. for their

  1852. benefit,

  1853. but because

  1854. he wanted

  1855. to work in

  1856. them and

  1857. through them

  1858. for others.

  1859. And that's

  1860. what we see

  1861. here.

  1862. God will

  1863. even allow

  1864. death to

  1865. come to

  1866. someone who

  1867. belongs to

  1868. him if it

  1869. means reaching

  1870. others for

  1871. salvation.

  1872. If you think

  1873. that sounds

  1874. harsh, then

  1875. you need to

  1876. contemplate the

  1877. cross because

  1878. he allowed the

  1879. one he loved

  1880. the most to

  1881. go to the

  1882. smallest little

  1883. picture and

  1884. die on the

  1885. cross in

  1886. order to

  1887. bring you

  1888. and I

  1889. into salvation.

  1890. He is

  1891. dedicated to

  1892. saving his

  1893. people in

  1894. the hardest

  1895. and most

  1896. dreadful

  1897. places.

  1898. Jesus said

  1899. this in

  1900. John 6

    John 6:37

  1901. verse 37,

  1902. all the

  1903. father gives

  1904. to me will

  1905. come to

  1906. me.

  1907. Whoever

  1908. comes to

  1909. me I

  1910. will never

  1911. cast out

  1912. for I

  1913. have come

  1914. down from

  1915. heaven not

  1916. to do my

  1917. own will but

  1918. the will of

  1919. him who sent

  1920. me.

  1921. And there it

  1922. is, this is

  1923. the will of

  1924. him who sent

  1925. me that I

  1926. should lose

  1927. nothing of

  1928. all that he

  1929. has given

  1930. me but

  1931. raised it up

  1932. on the last

  1933. day.

  1934. So Jesus

  1935. has come to

  1936. save his

  1937. people and he

  1938. will do it.

  1939. God is

  1940. always seeking

  1941. to do

  1942. good to

  1943. his people.

  1944. So God

  1945. isn't committed

  1946. to what you

  1947. want or you

  1948. think you

  1949. need.

  1950. He's committed

  1951. to giving you

  1952. only what is

  1953. good which

  1954. means what's

  1955. best for

  1956. you in

  1957. every situation.

  1958. So he's

  1959. not really as

  1960. concerned with

  1961. our temporal

  1962. joy or

  1963. our temporal

  1964. blessings.

  1965. He's more

  1966. focused on

  1967. eternity which

  1968. makes this

  1969. realm look

  1970. ridiculous.

  1971. And we know

  1972. our famous

  1973. Romans 8

  1974. 28, don't

  1975. let that

  1976. verse become

  1977. too familiar

  1978. to you.

  1979. We know

  1980. that for

  1981. those who

  1982. love God

  1983. all things

  1984. work together.

  1985. That working

  1986. together and

  1987. just, they

  1988. just work

  1989. out.

  1990. It means

  1991. that God

  1992. is working

  1993. providentially,

  1994. sovereignly,

  1995. working those

  1996. things for

  1997. their good.

  1998. Right?

  1999. For those who

  2000. are called

  2001. according to

  2002. his purpose,

  2003. not our

  2004. purpose.

  2005. Fourthly,

  2006. and I think

  2007. lastly,

  2008. God is

  2009. always seeking

  2010. to point

  2011. to Christ.

  2012. Right?

  2013. Not just

  2014. in terms of

  2015. salvation, but

  2016. he wants to

  2017. show Christ

  2018. in all that

  2019. he does.

  2020. So Christ

  2021. went into

  2022. the smallest

  2023. snapshot of

  2024. life on the

  2025. cross, and

  2026. he cried out

  2027. to his

  2028. father, right?

  2029. Even Jesus

  2030. did this.

  2031. My God,

  2032. my God,

  2033. why have

  2034. you forsaken

  2035. me?

  2036. Yet,

  2037. he trusted

  2038. the sovereign

  2039. plan of

  2040. his father,

  2041. and in

  2042. that darkest

  2043. hour, he

  2044. said,

  2045. Father,

  2046. into your

  2047. hands I

  2048. commit my

  2049. spirit.

  2050. Yet,

  2051. as is the

  2052. story of

  2053. history and

  2054. the story

  2055. of the

  2056. scripture,

  2057. we see

  2058. what man

  2059. devises for

  2060. evil.

  2061. God uses

  2062. it for

  2063. good.

  2064. Genesis

    Genesis 50:20

  2065. 50,

  2066. verse 20.

  2067. Ah,

  2068. this is such

  2069. a good,

  2070. I don't want

  2071. to get into

  2072. this too

  2073. much,

  2074. but this

  2075. is Joseph

  2076. talking to

  2077. his brothers,

  2078. but he

  2079. said,

  2080. what you

  2081. meant,

  2082. what you

  2083. designed,

  2084. what you

  2085. meant for

  2086. evil against

  2087. me,

  2088. God meant

  2089. it for

  2090. good.

  2091. Alright,

  2092. I want to

  2093. just explain

  2094. this just

  2095. briefly.

  2096. There's a lot

  2097. of talk out

  2098. there in

  2099. the church,

  2100. and by some

  2101. well-amending

  2102. people,

  2103. so I don't

  2104. want to,

  2105. I'm not

  2106. trying to

  2107. hate on

  2108. this,

  2109. I'm just

  2110. trying to

  2111. say that

  2112. right thinking

  2113. will change

  2114. how right

  2115. thinking about

  2116. God,

  2117. right thinking

  2118. about life

  2119. is important,

  2120. so it

  2121. doesn't just

  2122. mean,

  2123. think about

  2124. when a tragedy

  2125. happens,

  2126. what do you

  2127. hear on the

  2128. radio,

  2129. what do you

  2130. hear in the

  2131. news,

  2132. God didn't

  2133. want this

  2134. to happen,

  2135. but whoops,

  2136. like it

  2137. happened,

  2138. and now he

  2139. can come

  2140. around and

  2141. clean it up

  2142. and just

  2143. make something

  2144. good for

  2145. it,

  2146. we've kind

  2147. of heard

  2148. that,

  2149. right,

  2150. and it

  2151. sounds right,

  2152. but was God

  2153. caught off guard,

  2154. was he asleep,

  2155. like,

  2156. is he now

  2157. rushing to the

  2158. scene of an

  2159. accident,

  2160. trying to

  2161. clean it up

  2162. and hopefully

  2163. make something

  2164. good out of

  2165. it,

  2166. no,

  2167. and like this

  2168. text here

  2169. in Genesis

    Genesis 50:20

  2170. 50 verse 20,

  2171. what you

  2172. meant for

  2173. evil,

  2174. like you

  2175. willfully

  2176. did this

  2177. for evil,

  2178. God

  2179. meant it

  2180. for good,

  2181. so last

  2182. night,

  2183. I was looking

  2184. up how to

  2185. pronounce this

  2186. Hebrew word,

  2187. and Kathleen

  2188. was like,

  2189. what is that,

  2190. because it

  2191. was like,

  2192. saying it

  2193. to me,

  2194. kashab,

  2195. the word

  2196. meant,

  2197. God

  2198. meant it,

  2199. it means

  2200. to plan,

  2201. devise,

  2202. calculate,

  2203. imagine,

  2204. or invent,

  2205. so it

  2206. doesn't mean

  2207. that God

  2208. was like,

  2209. oh shoot,

  2210. let me clean

  2211. this up,

  2212. it meant

  2213. that he

  2214. sovereignly

  2215. designed that

  2216. evil action

  2217. to work

  2218. against itself

  2219. for good,

  2220. and so you

  2221. see in

  2222. scripture the

  2223. willful,

  2224. sinful actions

  2225. of men playing

  2226. right into

  2227. what God

  2228. wanted

  2229. every single

  2230. time,

  2231. great reason

  2232. to praise

  2233. him,

  2234. Piper says,

  2235. people lift up

  2236. their hand

  2237. to rebel

  2238. against the

  2239. most high,

  2240. only to find

  2241. that their

  2242. rebellion is

  2243. in the

  2244. unwitting

  2245. service of

  2246. the wonderful

  2247. designs of

  2248. God,

  2249. even sin

  2250. cannot frustrate

  2251. the purposes

  2252. of the

  2253. almighty,

  2254. if you

  2255. think about

  2256. it,

  2257. most vividly,

  2258. most seen

  2259. clearly at

  2260. the cross,

  2261. right,

  2262. Peter says

  2263. early in

  2264. Acts,

  2265. this Christ,

  2266. he was

  2267. delivered up

  2268. according to

  2269. the predetermined,

  2270. definite plan

  2271. of God,

  2272. right,

  2273. these evil

  2274. men crucified

  2275. him,

  2276. but it was

  2277. according to

  2278. the predestined

  2279. plan of

  2280. God,

  2281. so you can't

  2282. fight God,

  2283. who just

  2284. turn your

  2285. own traps

  2286. on you,

  2287. every single

  2288. time,

  2289. plan A,

  2290. not plan B,

  2291. so keep

  2292. in mind,

  2293. just those

  2294. things that

  2295. God is

  2296. always seeking

  2297. to get

  2298. praise in

  2299. dark places,

  2300. he's always

  2301. seeking to

  2302. save the

  2303. lost and

  2304. bring them

  2305. to salvation,

  2306. he's always

  2307. seeking to

  2308. do the

  2309. best,

  2310. the good

  2311. to his

  2312. people,

  2313. and God

  2314. is always

  2315. seeking to

  2316. point to

  2317. Christ,

  2318. so let's

  2319. just ponder

  2320. that,

  2321. reality,

  2322. let's pray

  2323. together,

  2324. and continue

  2325. to worship

  2326. God.
