  1. This is the Sunday that many call Palm Sunday, Sunday for preparation of the coming week, looking toward Good Friday, the celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

  2. ! If you've been here long, it may not surprise you that we're going to continue our verse-by-verse exposition today in the book of Acts.

  3. But that's not because we don't find that there's value at times in taking some moments to prepare for things like Easter Sunday, that there's not value in stepping away from the normal plan at holidays.

  4. Praise the Lord. Last year, we were able to be in the Gospel of Mark and actually preach the resurrection on Easter Sunday from Mark. The timing worked out wonderfully in that way.

  5. Praise the Lord. If we stay on schedule in Acts, that next Sunday I'll be able to continue to preach in Acts on the resurrection because Paul's defense at the Oropagus, he brings up the resurrection and I can preach it from there.

  6. So that's a wonderful thing and in part the reason that we're going to stay in Acts chapter 17 this morning.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  7. Also, though, just as a maybe interesting side note to you, and as we established last year, that Palm Sunday was not a thing. It's actually Palm Monday.

  8. There's no such thing as Silent Wednesday. If you ever care to have fun with that, I'd love to walk you through that timeline and show you that Jesus entered into Jerusalem on a Monday.

  9. And then we see all of the activity that hastens to his crucifixion Friday and then his glorious resurrection on Sunday of the following week.

  10. Before this morning, our text is Acts chapter 17, verses 10 through 15.

    Acts 17:10–15

  11. Before I read this, let me remind you, beloved, this is God's Word to us.

  12. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  13. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  14. And I'll begin reading in verse 10.

  15. The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea.

  16. And when they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

  17. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica.

  18. They received the word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

  19. Many of them, therefore, believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men.

  20. But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also,

  21. they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.

  22. Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea,

  23. but Silas and Timothy remained there.

  24. Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens.

  25. And after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

  26. So last week, we looked at Paul and his missionary band's visit to the city of Thessalonica.

  27. They're now in Macedonia.

  28. They've crossed the Aegean Sea.

  29. They're in for the first time.

  30. And Europe, as we know it, the gospel has gone forth into that place.

  31. And we structured our study last week of the first nine verses of Acts chapter 17 around four points.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  32. And those points were as follows.

  33. Gospel courage.

  34. Number two, gospel clarity.

  35. Number three, gospel conversion.

  36. And number four, gospel conflict.

  37. Now, many of those points could be reiterated today.

  38. And I will reiterate them in brief.

  39. Paul and his companions repeat the same activity with similar results as they saw in Thessalonica.

  40. The texts are often taught together.

  41. They parallel one another in many ways.

  42. Note in our text today, number one, gospel courage.

  43. Courage.

  44. In verse 10, we see that the brothers, these are the brothers in Thessalonica,

  45. immediately send Paul and Silas away by night to Berea.

  46. There is no reason to believe that they did so out of fear.

  47. But rather, it is right to assume that they did not want the advance of the gospel to be hindered by their arrest.

  48. So they travel to Berea.

  49. They leave behind those believers they've trained in Thessalonica to continue the advance of the gospel.

  50. We see in 1 Thessalonians chapter 1 that they certainly do this by the power of the Spirit and by the Word of God.

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  51. And they move on to Berea.

  52. Berea is a less significant town than Thessalonica.

  53. It's about 45 miles southwest.

  54. It's off the Ignatian Way, which is that Roman highway we've been talking about in weeks past.

  55. And we can rightly assume that they did not escape Thessalonica out of fear

  56. because we see a repeat of their exact courageous action back in Thessalonica.

  57. What do they do?

  58. And when they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

  59. Luke's not very explicit here, but I like to apply a little pastoral imagination to the text

  60. to say that when they arrived, they traveled through the night,

  61. and the first thing they did is went to the Jewish synagogue.

  62. Maybe not, but I like to conject in that direction.

  63. They went immediately into the Jewish synagogue and once again with great courage preached the gospel.

  64. So we see again this idea of gospel clarity in our text.

  65. Verse 11, right?

  66. We see that these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica.

  67. They received the Word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

  68. We know that Paul and his companions preached the gospel because the text says they received the Word.

  69. Well, what Word, right?

  70. We want to look at our text in its greater context.

  71. Luke has been writing.

  72. His pen has barely picked up off the page, even though it's been a whole week for us.

  73. So what was the Word, right?

  74. The very same Word that he preached to the Thessalonians.

  75. Look back in chapter 17, verse 2 and 3.

  76. He reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

  77. explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead,

  78. and saying, this Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ.

  79. And so he's now in another synagogue, and he's once again speaking to Jewish worshipers of God,

  80. as well as what would have been referred to as God-fearers, Gentiles, Greeks, our text says,

  81. who would have been coming to the synagogue to try to walk in the ways of God.

  82. And Paul is pointing out to them the insufficiency of the sacrificial system.

  83. For them to be found righteous before Christ, the sacrificial system did not cut it.

  84. It was meant to point to something greater.

  85. All of the religious practice, all of the things prescribed by God for them to do,

  86. was meant to point them to a more perfect sacrifice.

  87. They were meant to look to the Christ.

  88. Paul is likely correcting their misconceptions about who the Christ was.

  89. The common belief in this day by Jews was that Jesus, the Messiah, the one who would come,

  90. would be a deliverer in a political sense.

  91. Would deliver them from Roman rule and restore Jerusalem back to its former glory.

  92. And so he's correcting that thinking all along.

  93. And he's saying to them, this Jesus, this humble Jesus,

  94. the one who came and suffered and died, is the Christ.

  95. He's pointing them rightly to the gospel of Jesus.

  96. And there's a result from that.

  97. We see, thirdly, gospel conversions.

  98. Because of their receiving of the word and their careful study of the scripture,

  99. Luke records for us,

  100. many of them therefore believe, this is verse 12,

  101. with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men.

  102. So both the Jews and some Greeks believed.

  103. As is most often the case,

  104. when the gospel, courageously proclaimed with clarity,

  105. empowered by the Spirit, will yield conversions,

  106. will see people turn from their wicked ways

  107. and turn to righteousness in Christ.

  108. But not for everyone.

  109. Some will reject the gospel.

  110. And we see this as well in our text.

  111. Gospel conflict.

  112. Please don't think this is a ten minute sermon.

  113. I'm wrapping up from last week into this one.

  114. And then we're going to draw back into it.

  115. So gospel conflict we see as well.

  116. So the very same Jews in Thessalonica

  117. that were stirring up a crowd,

  118. that were bringing about persecution,

  119. that were seeking to arrest Paul and his companions,

  120. that did arrest Jason who was housing him.

  121. The very same Thessalonians.

  122. Because of the jealousy produced within them,

  123. they hear that the gospel is being proclaimed also at Berea,

  124. and they come there and they do the very same thing.

  125. So once again, not because they're fearful,

  126. but because they don't want to impede the gospel going forth,

  127. Paul now is sent off,

  128. while Silas and Timothy remain behind.

  129. They stay there to continue to instruct in the gospel.

  130. And Paul is sent off.

  131. Persecution.

  132. I have posited this to you across our entire study of the book of Acts

  133. and for many years before that.

  134. Persecution is the norm for the devoted follower of Christ.

  135. It is not the exception.

  136. Persecution.

  137. It will take various forms,

  138. in various places,

  139. at various times.

  140. We are not likely to be imprisoned for our faith.

  141. We're probably really doing something unfaithful if we're imprisoned

  142. in the frame of our faith.

  143. We will not be imprisoned in the U.S.,

  144. at least not for now.

  145. But persecution is still to be normative

  146. for the devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

  147. So in brief, we can see much of the same activity

  148. and much of the same response, right?

  149. It's like a repeat of what happened in Thessalonica.

  150. But there is one extremely striking difference

  151. between these two towns.

  152. And it's a difference which is worth our noting at some length.

  153. So please let me draw your attention back to verse 11.

  154. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica.

  155. They received the word with all eagerness,

  156. examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

  157. Luke records, for our benefit,

  158. that the Berean Jews were more noble than the Thessalonian Jews.

  159. Why?

  160. First, let's take a look at the word here translated,

  161. more noble.

  162. That's a single word in the Greek.

  163. The word is,

  164. I've got to get ready for the pronunciation,

  165. eugenesteroi,

  166. I believe.

  167. In a couple of other translations,

  168. well-known translations,

  169. the New American Standard Bible

  170. translates that word,

  171. more noble-minded.

  172. The NIV translates it,

  173. of more noble character.

  174. And the Holman Christian Standard Bible,

  175. which is Lifeways New translation,

  176. it's a good one,

  177. says more open-minded.

  178. Now the ESV translators

  179. have done well to just translate the word,

  180. more noble.

  181. It's the most straightforward understanding

  182. of that word,

  183. eugenesteroi,

  184. the root of which is eugeness,

  185. which means well-born.

  186. It's the word that the English word eugenics

  187. is derived from.

  188. Sounds familiar to you.

  189. While I believe that the ESV translators

  190. are more faithful to the Greek language

  191. in this case,

  192. I think that the New American Standard Bible translators

  193. are more faithful to the meaning

  194. of the word,

  195. more noble-minded.

  196. And we can gather that

  197. as we look to the reason why.

  198. Luke tells us why

  199. he's calling them more noble.

  200. And NASB translators expand that idea

  201. to be more noble-minded.

  202. And the rest of verse 11.

  203. The Bereans were more noble

  204. than those in Thessalonica

  205. for two reasons.

  206. Number one,

  207. they received the word

  208. with all eagerness.

  209. They received it with eagerness.

  210. They were teachable.

  211. They weren't closed off

  212. to the idea of something new,

  213. some explanation of

  214. the word of God.

  215. They weren't so trapped

  216. in their form of thinking

  217. about who the Messiah was

  218. that they weren't willing

  219. to hear an alternative explanation.

  220. It is a great mark

  221. of the Christian to be humble.

  222. And a great mark of humility

  223. is teachability.

  224. To hear a case made.

  225. And hear a case made from the Bible.

  226. And to receive it with eagerness.

  227. Not blindly,

  228. to our second point,

  229. but to receive it.

  230. To hear what someone may have to say

  231. to us from the Bible.

  232. They were pleased

  233. to have a case made to them

  234. from the Scripture

  235. as Paul surely did

  236. just as we saw him do

  237. in Thessalonica.

  238. So they were more noble,

  239. more noble-minded

  240. because they received the word

  241. with all eagerness.

  242. And secondly,

  243. because they examined

  244. the Scriptures

  245. to see if these things were so.

  246. Not just that they examined them,

  247. but they examined the Scriptures

  248. daily

  249. to see if these things were so.

  250. They were diligent

  251. to test

  252. anything

  253. that was taught

  254. against,

  255. tested against

  256. the revelation

  257. of God.

  258. It's like they held up

  259. the Holy Writ

  260. and they held up

  261. this teaching

  262. that Paul brought to them

  263. to see if the things

  264. lined up together.

  265. They examined it

  266. very carefully

  267. to see if what Paul

  268. was saying

  269. was so.

  270. Beloved,

  271. the exhortation

  272. this morning for us

  273. is that we

  274. should be like

  275. the Bereans.

  276. We should diligently

  277. examine

  278. every teaching,

  279. hold it up

  280. against the Scripture

  281. to see

  282. if it

  283. is so.

  284. I am thankful

  285. for a church

  286. that does this

  287. for me.

  288. My teaching

  289. is not

  290. above

  291. this kind

  292. of scrutiny.

  293. No one's is.

  294. The Word of God

  295. is authoritative.

  296. It is His

  297. Word.

  298. And I can only

  299. speak with authority

  300. insofar

  301. as I speak

  302. consistent

  303. with the Word

  304. of God.

  305. I tell you

  306. what it

  307. says.

  308. I need you

  309. to function

  310. as a

  311. God-fearing,

  312. Bible-loving

  313. congregation.

  314. so that if

  315. I err,

  316. you will be

  317. quick to catch

  318. me.

  319. It is my

  320. desire to be

  321. both true

  322. and consistent,

  323. but if pressed

  324. to it,

  325. I will choose

  326. truth over

  327. consistency.

  328. I am glad

  329. to get up here

  330. if I have

  331. erred and said

  332. I screwed

  333. it up.

  334. I've been

  335. shown my

  336. error.

  337. I taught

  338. improperly

  339. and I need

  340. to make

  341. correction.

  342. But,

  343. bring me

  344. correction

  345. with Scripture

  346. and plain

  347. logic.

  348. You've got to

  349. do somersaults

  350. to convince me

  351. of something.

  352. I don't want

  353. to hear it.

  354. Bring me

  355. correction with

  356. Scripture

  357. and plain

  358. logic.

  359. If you come

  360. to me and

  361. you say,

  362. I don't feel

  363. like what you

  364. said is true,

  365. I will go

  366. figure out

  367. why you

  368. feel that

  369. way.

  370. And then

  371. let's talk.

  372. Scripture

  373. and plain

  374. logic.

  375. Your feelings

  376. do not

  377. define the

  378. truth and

  379. neither do

  380. mine.

  381. I want to

  382. give you a

  383. good example

  384. of this.

  385. If you've

  386. been here

  387. for a while,

  388. you have

  389. heard me

  390. talk about

  391. this already,

  392. but it's

  393. too good

  394. not to

  395. talk about

  396. again.

  397. I'm going

  398. to read

  399. to you

  400. from the

  401. biography

  402. written by

  403. A.T.

  404. Pearson

  405. of George

  406. Mueller.

  407. It's called

  408. George

  409. Mueller of

  410. Bristol.

  411. Don't buy

  412. this copy.

  413. It's a

  414. horrible

  415. printing of

  416. it.

  417. But the

  418. book is

  419. wonderful.

  420. This just

  421. happens to

  422. do with

  423. believers

  424. baptism,

  425. but that's

  426. not the

  427. primary

  428. point of

  429. what I'm

  430. reading to

  431. you here.

  432. But George

  433. Mueller serving

  434. as a

  435. pastor was

  436. corrected,

  437. and this is

  438. wonderful.

  439. He says,

  440. while at

  441. Sidmouth

  442. preaching

  443. in April

  444. 1830,

  445. three

  446. believing

  447. sisters

  448. held in

  449. his

  450. presence

  451. a

  452. conversation

  453. about

  454. believers

  455. baptism,

  456. which

  457. proved the

  458. suggestion

  459. of another

  460. important step

  461. in his

  462. life,

  463. which has

  464. a wider

  465. bearing

  466. than at

  467. first is

  468. apparent.

  469. They

  470. naturally

  471. asked his

  472. opinion on

  473. the subject

  474. about which

  475. they were

  476. talking,

  477. and he

  478. replied that,

  479. having been

  480. baptized as a

  481. child,

  482. he saw no

  483. need of being

  484. baptized again.

  485. being further

  486. asked if he

  487. had ever yet

  488. prayerfully searched

  489. the word of

  490. God as to

  491. its testimony

  492. in this

  493. matter,

  494. he frankly

  495. confessed that

  496. he had not.

  497. He's a

  498. pastor,

  499. they say,

  500. they're talking

  501. about believers

  502. baptism,

  503. what do you

  504. think,

  505. Pastor Mueller?

  506. And he

  507. says,

  508. having been

  509. baptized as

  510. a child,

  511. I see no

  512. need to be

  513. baptized as

  514. an adult,

  515. and one

  516. of them

  517. says,

  518. have you

  519. ever

  520. prayerfully

  521. searched

  522. the word

  523. of God

  524. for that?

  525. And he

  526. said,

  527. nope.

  528. At

  529. once,

  530. with

  531. unmistakable

  532. plainness of

  533. speech,

  534. and with

  535. rare fidelity,

  536. one of

  537. these sisters

  538. in Christ

  539. promptly

  540. said,

  541. I entreat

  542. you then,

  543. never again

  544. to speak

  545. any more

  546. about it

  547. till you

  548. have done

  549. so.

  550. Isn't

  551. that wonderful?

  552. A bit

  553. later on,

  554. and again,

  555. I commend

  556. this particular

  557. book to you.

  558. A.T.

  559. Pearson was a

  560. pastor and

  561. just a

  562. wonderful

  563. writer.

  564. He says,

  565. what radical

  566. reforms would

  567. be made in

  568. modern worship,

  569. teaching,

  570. and practice?

  571. In the

  572. whole conduct

  573. of disciples

  574. and the

  575. administration

  576. of the

  577. church of

  578. God,

  579. if the

  580. one final

  581. criterion

  582. of all

  583. judgment

  584. were,

  585. what do

  586. the

  587. scriptures

  588. teach?

  589. Recently,

  590. at a

  591. community

  592. group meeting,

  593. I had some

  594. questions asked

  595. of me about

  596. why we do

  597. music the

  598. way we do

  599. music here.

  600. things.

  601. And it

  602. made me

  603. realize that

  604. time is

  605. flying by for

  606. me incredibly

  607. quick because

  608. with these

  609. particular people,

  610. I felt like I

  611. had preached

  612. on that

  613. matter,

  614. but then

  615. realized it's

  616. been half a

  617. decade ago

  618. that we

  619. preached on

  620. why we do

  621. music the

  622. way we do

  623. music.

  624. Everything we

  625. do here,

  626. at least in

  627. our best

  628. attempt,

  629. has an

  630. undergirding of

  631. scripture for

  632. why we do

  633. things,

  634. the way we

  635. do things.

  636. And it

  637. caused me to

  638. realize,

  639. and then talking

  640. with the

  641. elders of our

  642. church to

  643. realize that

  644. we need to

  645. repeat and

  646. talk about

  647. some things

  648. again and

  649. explain why so

  650. that you

  651. understand.

  652. I think for a

  653. lot of you,

  654. music is an

  655. example.

  656. You just enjoy

  657. the way music

  658. is done here,

  659. but you don't

  660. really know the

  661. why behind why

  662. we do music

  663. or anything

  664. else.

  665. Verse by

  666. verse exposition

  667. as another

  668. example in

  669. our church.

  670. And the

  671. answer, we

  672. hope, and I

  673. don't know that

  674. we do this for

  675. perfection, but

  676. we're trying, we

  677. hope, is because

  678. the Bible says

  679. such and such

  680. about such a

  681. thing.

  682. And so we're

  683. going to, in

  684. the years coming,

  685. probably years,

  686. take some time,

  687. pause from time

  688. to time, from

  689. verse by verse

  690. exposition, and

  691. do like a

  692. series across

  693. time called

  694. Why We Do

  695. What We Do.

  696. And fingers

  697. crossed, Wes

  698. is going to

  699. help us produce

  700. some short

  701. videos with

  702. the same, so

  703. you can go

  704. back and

  705. reference those

  706. things, and

  707. that's a big

  708. project in and

  709. of itself.

  710. But we want

  711. you to understand

  712. that as a

  713. church, we

  714. stand on the

  715. foundation of

  716. scripture.

  717. And if you

  718. can show me

  719. that something

  720. we're doing is

  721. an error,

  722. right, again,

  723. by the Bible

  724. and by plain

  725. logging, we

  726. will get it

  727. out of our

  728. meeting together

  729. and our conduct

  730. together as a

  731. church.

  732. We believe

  733. that the

  734. revelation of

  735. God is

  736. absolutely

  737. foundational to

  738. the way we

  739. function together.

  740. It's for your

  741. good, it's for

  742. our good, it's

  743. for our

  744. community's good

  745. that we do

  746. so.

  747. We live in an

  748. epistemologically

  749. schismed society,

  750. right?

  751. No one seems to

  752. be able to

  753. arrive at the

  754. truth, much

  755. less how the

  756. truth should be

  757. arrived at,

  758. right?

  759. the New York

  760. Times just

  761. recently put out

  762. an article

  763. specifically in

  764. regards to our

  765. president, but

  766. is the truth

  767. dead?

  768. Seems to be,

  769. not in specific

  770. to our

  771. president, but

  772. just generally

  773. speaking, right?

  774. We don't seem

  775. to know what the

  776. truth is or how

  777. to arrive at it.

  778. Some of you in

  779. my hearing this

  780. morning are

  781. modernists.

  782. It's from

  783. modernist thinking

  784. that we get

  785. things like the

  786. scientific method,

  787. modernists want

  788. to measure

  789. things out, to

  790. see the concrete

  791. evidence for,

  792. something we can

  793. quantify to say,

  794. and this is what

  795. works.

  796. This is the way

  797. that we ought

  798. to go.

  799. Some of you in

  800. my hearing this

  801. morning are

  802. postmodernists.

  803. I tend to fall

  804. into that category.

  805. That category is

  806. getting smaller and

  807. smaller as our

  808. church moves on.

  809. postmodernists tend

  810. to believe that

  811. the truth is

  812. defined by your

  813. own experience of

  814. the truth.

  815. So I experience

  816. something to be

  817. true, therefore it

  818. is true, and

  819. nobody can debate

  820. that with me.

  821. And most of you

  822. in my hearing this

  823. morning are

  824. post-postmodernists.

  825. You need a much

  826. more creative name

  827. than that, but

  828. you're currently

  829. being called

  830. post-postmodernists.

  831. And here's the

  832. frightening result of

  833. postmodernity.

  834. is that post-postmodernists

  835. tend to believe that

  836. the truth cannot be

  837. arrived at at all.

  838. Even your own

  839. experience of the

  840. truth may not be

  841. true.

  842. How can I possibly

  843. know?

  844. And all of these

  845. have some strengths

  846. and some weaknesses

  847. to be sure.

  848. I'm not trying to

  849. dismiss any of them

  850. entirely, but any

  851. one of these

  852. epistemological views

  853. needs to be

  854. anchored in the

  855. unfailing reality

  856. that the Bible

  857. is God's

  858. word and

  859. therefore is

  860. entirely true

  861. and contains

  862. within it

  863. everything we

  864. need to know

  865. concerning the

  866. worship of God.

  867. Like, we need

  868. to believe in

  869. revelation.

  870. I have to

  871. believe in

  872. something outside

  873. of myself.

  874. I know myself

  875. too well to

  876. think that I

  877. can arrive as

  878. a postmodern

  879. thinker at the

  880. truth for

  881. myself.

  882. I need to

  883. believe that

  884. God has spoken

  885. and that I

  886. have those very

  887. words for my

  888. benefit.

  889. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:16

  890. chapter 3

  891. verse 16

  892. and 17

  893. Paul writes,

  894. all scripture

  895. is breathed

  896. out by God.

  897. This idea of

  898. being breathed

  899. out is expired

  900. by God.

  901. Him as the

  902. very source,

  903. His very

  904. breath.

  905. We often talk

  906. in the Bible

  907. of being inspired,

  908. spoken into

  909. men who

  910. penned it.

  911. Paul is

  912. upping that

  913. idea by

  914. saying it's

  915. actually breathed

  916. out.

  917. He is the

  918. very source

  919. of it.

  920. It's breathed

  921. out by God

  922. and it's

  923. profitable.

  924. It's profitable

  925. for teaching,

  926. for reproof,

  927. for correction,

  928. and for training

  929. in righteousness.

  930. That the man

  931. of God may be

  932. complete,

  933. equipped for

  934. every good

  935. work.

  936. We need to

  937. believe in

  938. these scriptures.

  939. On your

  940. bulletin this

  941. morning, the

  942. historical quote

  943. for you,

  944. Martin Lloyd

  945. Jones said,

  946. there can be

  947. no doubt

  948. whatsoever that

  949. all the

  950. troubles in

  951. the church

  952. today and

  953. most of

  954. the troubles

  955. in the

  956. world are

  957. due to a

  958. departure from

  959. the authority

  960. of the

  961. Bible.

  962. Now, for

  963. your benefit,

  964. I hope,

  965. we're still

  966. talking about

  967. the Bereans,

  968. we're talking

  969. about how we

  970. should be like

  971. the Bereans,

  972. but I want to

  973. put up on the

  974. screen for you

  975. article one of

  976. our church's

  977. statement of

  978. faith, which

  979. is on the

  980. scriptures.

  981. So there it

  982. is for you,

  983. for you to

  984. interact with it

  985. visually as I

  986. read it to

  987. you.

  988. We believe

  989. that the

  990. Holy Bible

  991. was written

  992. by men,

  993. divinely

  994. inspired,

  995. and is a

  996. perfect treasure

  997. of heavenly

  998. instruction.

  999. That it has

  1000. gods for its

  1001. author,

  1002. he expired it,

  1003. salvation for

  1004. its end,

  1005. and truth

  1006. without any

  1007. mixture of

  1008. error for

  1009. its matter.

  1010. That it

  1011. reveals the

  1012. principles by

  1013. which God

  1014. will judge

  1015. us and

  1016. therefore is

  1017. and shall

  1018. remain to

  1019. the end of

  1020. the world

  1021. the true

  1022. center of

  1023. Christian union

  1024. and the

  1025. supreme

  1026. standard by

  1027. which all

  1028. human conduct,

  1029. creeds,

  1030. and opinions

  1031. should be

  1032. tried.

  1033. It's a

  1034. beautiful

  1035. statement,

  1036. isn't it?

  1037. We didn't

  1038. write it.

  1039. It's from the

  1040. New Hampshire

  1041. confession.

  1042. It is the

  1043. great standard

  1044. by which all

  1045. other truths

  1046. are tried.

  1047. And isn't

  1048. that what the

  1049. Bereans are

  1050. doing?

  1051. Searching the

  1052. scriptures

  1053. diligently to

  1054. that end.

  1055. This statement

  1056. speaks to the

  1057. authority,

  1058. the inerrancy,

  1059. the clarity,

  1060. the necessity,

  1061. and the

  1062. sufficiency of

  1063. the scriptures.

  1064. These are all

  1065. extremely important

  1066. Bible doctrines

  1067. or doctrines

  1068. of the

  1069. Bible.

  1070. What do we

  1071. believe is

  1072. true of

  1073. what we

  1074. call our

  1075. scripture?

  1076. And I want

  1077. to go through

  1078. those with

  1079. you.

  1080. Authority,

  1081. inerrancy,

  1082. clarity,

  1083. necessity,

  1084. sufficiency.

  1085. I just want

  1086. to lay out

  1087. some definitions

  1088. for you.

  1089. You will

  1090. not have

  1091. time to

  1092. write these

  1093. down,

  1094. but I am

  1095. taking these

  1096. directly from

  1097. Wayne Grudem's

  1098. Systematic Theology.

  1099. I figured it would

  1100. be best for

  1101. me to give

  1102. you someone

  1103. else's definition

  1104. you can go

  1105. to and study

  1106. more on

  1107. Wayne Grudem's

  1108. Systematic Theology.

  1109. It's a

  1110. wonderful book

  1111. which I would

  1112. have to lift

  1113. like this

  1114. this morning

  1115. to show

  1116. to you.

  1117. I've got a

  1118. copy you

  1119. can borrow

  1120. if you would

  1121. like to.

  1122. So the

  1123. authority of

  1124. scripture means

  1125. that all the

  1126. words in

  1127. scripture are

  1128. God's words

  1129. in such a

  1130. way that to

  1131. disbelieve or

  1132. disobey any

  1133. word of the

  1134. scripture is to

  1135. disbelieve or

  1136. disobey God.

  1137. They're God's

  1138. very words.

  1139. He has spoken

  1140. to us.

  1141. So they have

  1142. authority.

  1143. The Bible has

  1144. authority because

  1145. God has spoken

  1146. them.

  1147. To disbelieve

  1148. or disobey

  1149. is to

  1150. disbelieve or

  1151. disobey

  1152. God

  1153. himself.

  1154. The children

  1155. are memorizing

  1156. Psalm 1.

  1157. You would do

  1158. well to join

  1159. with us in

  1160. memorizing

  1161. Psalm 1.

  1162. If you

  1163. memorize no

  1164. other scripture

  1165. this year,

  1166. which I

  1167. encourage you

  1168. to do so,

  1169. but at least

  1170. participate.

  1171. Don't check

  1172. out when I'm

  1173. down here

  1174. reciting with

  1175. some level

  1176. of proficiency.

  1177. Psalm 1

  1178. which says

  1179. this,

  1180. Blessed is

  1181. the man

  1182. who walks

  1183. not in the

  1184. counsel of

  1185. the wicked,

  1186. nor stands

  1187. in the way

  1188. of sinners,

  1189. nor sits

  1190. in the seat

  1191. of scoffers,

  1192. but his

  1193. delight is

  1194. in the law

  1195. of the Lord,

  1196. and on his

  1197. law he

  1198. meditates

  1199. day and

  1200. night.

  1201. He is like

  1202. a tree

  1203. planted by

  1204. streams of

  1205. water that

  1206. yields its

  1207. fruit in

  1208. its season,

  1209. and its

  1210. leaf does

  1211. not wither.

  1212. In all

  1213. that he

  1214. does,

  1215. he prospers.

  1216. The wicked

  1217. are not so,

  1218. but are like

  1219. chaff that the

  1220. wind drives

  1221. away.

  1222. Therefore the

  1223. wicked will

  1224. not stand

  1225. in the

  1226. judgment,

  1227. nor sinners

  1228. in the

  1229. congregation

  1230. of the

  1231. righteous.

  1232. For the

  1233. Lord knows

  1234. the way

  1235. of the

  1236. righteous,

  1237. but the

  1238. way of

  1239. the wicked

  1240. will perish.

  1241. It was

  1242. laid before

  1243. us in

  1244. Psalm 1

  1245. a choice

  1246. to be

  1247. made.

  1248. It's

  1249. binary

  1250. in

  1251. nature.

  1252. You'll

  1253. find

  1254. yourself

  1255. wicked,

  1256. you're

  1257. way not

  1258. prospering,

  1259. final judgment

  1260. being yours,

  1261. or you'll

  1262. find yourself

  1263. prospering,

  1264. being righteous,

  1265. by doing

  1266. what?

  1267. Meditating

  1268. in the

  1269. law of

  1270. God.

  1271. We get

  1272. such

  1273. clear,

  1274. more

  1275. beautiful

  1276. gospel

  1277. understanding

  1278. of this

  1279. when we

  1280. know that

  1281. we are

  1282. found

  1283. righteous

  1284. in

  1285. Christ.

  1286. And that

  1287. being found

  1288. righteous,

  1289. being accepted

  1290. by God

  1291. in Christ,

  1292. what we

  1293. now do

  1294. is we

  1295. turn to

  1296. Him

  1297. in

  1298. His

  1299. Word.

  1300. We look

  1301. for the

  1302. good

  1303. instruction

  1304. of our

  1305. loving

  1306. Father.

  1307. Beloved,

  1308. this is

  1309. God's

  1310. Word for

  1311. us,

  1312. written

  1313. for His

  1314. glory

  1315. and for

  1316. our

  1317. good.

  1318. We would

  1319. all do

  1320. well to

  1321. listen to

  1322. it,

  1323. to believe

  1324. its promises,

  1325. and obey

  1326. its commands.

  1327. I mentioned

  1328. to you

  1329. earlier in

  1330. our

  1331. announcements,

  1332. talking about

  1333. having a

  1334. Bible-centered,

  1335. gospel-saturated

  1336. counseling center

  1337. in our

  1338. area.

  1339. Our

  1340. church needs

  1341. this,

  1342. our community

  1343. needs this,

  1344. because most

  1345. of our

  1346. problems,

  1347. most of

  1348. them are

  1349. spiritual

  1350. problems,

  1351. and they

  1352. need a

  1353. gospel

  1354. answer.

  1355. We need

  1356. to pick

  1357. up the

  1358. Word and

  1359. be instructed

  1360. by it,

  1361. and meditate

  1362. on it,

  1363. and memorize

  1364. it,

  1365. and apply

  1366. it to

  1367. all the

  1368. intricacies,

  1369. all the

  1370. little

  1371. challenges

  1372. of our

  1373. life.

  1374. The

  1375. Bible

  1376. speaks to

  1377. every

  1378. single

  1379. one of

  1380. them.

  1381. Spiritual

  1382. problems

  1383. always

  1384. have

  1385. gospel

  1386. answers.

  1387. So that's

  1388. the authority

  1389. of the

  1390. Scripture.

  1391. The

  1392. inerrancy

  1393. of Scripture

  1394. is the

  1395. next one.

  1396. The

  1397. inerrancy

  1398. of Scripture

  1399. means that

  1400. Scripture

  1401. in the

  1402. original

  1403. manuscripts,

  1404. we're

  1405. removing

  1406. translation

  1407. problems,

  1408. right?

  1409. Not

  1410. inspired,

  1411. right?

  1412. The

  1413. ESV,

  1414. not

  1415. inspired.

  1416. The

  1417. NASB,

  1418. not

  1419. inspired.

  1420. I get

  1421. some

  1422. debates

  1423. with

  1424. people

  1425. about

  1426. those

  1427. two

  1428. translations.

  1429. It's a

  1430. little

  1431. fun.

  1432. The

  1433. King

  1434. James

  1435. Version,

  1436. not

  1437. inspired.

  1438. The

  1439. original

  1440. manuscript,

  1441. okay?

  1442. The

  1443. inerrancy

  1444. of Scripture

  1445. means that

  1446. Scripture

  1447. in the

  1448. original

  1449. manuscripts

  1450. does not

  1451. affirm

  1452. anything

  1453. that is

  1454. contrary

  1455. to

  1456. fact.

  1457. Proverbs

  1458. 35,

  1459. 35,

  1460. every

  1461. word of

  1462. God

  1463. proves

  1464. true.

  1465. He is

  1466. a shield

  1467. to those

  1468. who take

  1469. refuge

  1470. in Him.

  1471. The

  1472. clarity

  1473. of Scripture.

  1474. The

  1475. clarity

  1476. of Scripture

  1477. means that

  1478. the Bible

  1479. is written

  1480. in such

  1481. a way

  1482. that its

  1483. teachings

  1484. are able

  1485. to be

  1486. understood

  1487. by all

  1488. who will

  1489. read it,

  1490. seeking

  1491. God's

  1492. help,

  1493. and being

  1494. willing

  1495. to follow

  1496. it.

  1497. I'll read

  1498. that one

  1499. again to

  1500. you.

  1501. The

  1502. clarity

  1503. of Scripture

  1504. means,

  1505. and I hope

  1506. this is a

  1507. comfort to

  1508. some of

  1509. you who

  1510. are daunted

  1511. by the

  1512. study of

  1513. the Bible.

  1514. The

  1515. clarity

  1516. of Scripture

  1517. means that

  1518. the Bible

  1519. is written

  1520. in such

  1521. a way

  1522. that its

  1523. teachings

  1524. are able

  1525. to be

  1526. understood

  1527. by all

  1528. who will

  1529. read it,

  1530. seeking

  1531. God's

  1532. help,

  1533. and being

  1534. willing

  1535. to follow

  1536. it.

  1537. Psalm

  1538. 19,

  1539. 7 reads,

  1540. The

  1541. law of

  1542. the Lord

  1543. is perfect,

  1544. reviving

  1545. the soul.

  1546. The

  1547. testimony

  1548. of the

  1549. Lord

  1550. is sure,

  1551. making

  1552. wise

  1553. the

  1554. simple.

  1555. I am

  1556. so

  1557. encouraged

  1558. by the

  1559. doctrine

  1560. of

  1561. the

  1562. clarity

  1563. of

  1564. Scripture.

  1565. It

  1566. presses

  1567. me

  1568. to

  1569. teach

  1570. the

  1571. Bible

  1572. to

  1573. my

  1574. children.

  1575. It

  1576. amazes

  1577. me

  1578. already

  1579. some of

  1580. the

  1581. concepts

  1582. that

  1583. they

  1584. are

  1585. wrapping

  1586. their

  1587. minds

  1588. around,

  1589. that I

  1590. am

  1591. fumbling

  1592. through.

  1593. How do I

  1594. teach this

  1595. to a

  1596. five-year-old?

  1597. That they

  1598. seem to be

  1599. already

  1600. picking up

  1601. some of

  1602. these

  1603. glorious

  1604. truths.

  1605. it

  1606. means

  1607. that the

  1608. person

  1609. who

  1610. has

  1611. just

  1612. come

  1613. out

  1614. from

  1615. underneath

  1616. a

  1617. bridge

  1618. in

  1619. Atlanta

  1620. and

  1621. is

  1622. still

  1623. going

  1624. through

  1625. drug

  1626. addiction

  1627. withdrawals

  1628. can pick

  1629. up the

  1630. Bible

  1631. and have

  1632. it

  1633. speak

  1634. to his

  1635. heart

  1636. and he

  1637. can

  1638. respond

  1639. in

  1640. faith

  1641. to it.

  1642. Now,

  1643. as we

  1644. consider

  1645. the

  1646. clarity

  1647. of

  1648. Scripture,

  1649. some of

  1650. your

  1651. minds

  1652. may

  1653. think,

  1654. then why

  1655. do

  1656. so many

  1657. people

  1658. think

  1659. so

  1660. many

  1661. different

  1662. things

  1663. about

  1664. the

  1665. Bible?

  1666. Simply,

  1667. we could

  1668. take a

  1669. bunch of

  1670. the

  1671. errors

  1672. of

  1673. the

  1674. Bible

  1675. and

  1676. just

  1677. say

  1678. they're

  1679. errors.

  1680. People

  1681. don't

  1682. translate

  1683. the

  1684. Bible.

  1685. They

  1686. don't

  1687. understand

  1688. it.

  1689. They

  1690. may

  1691. not

  1692. be

  1693. in

  1694. the

  1695. faith.

  1696. They're

  1697. not

  1698. faithful

  1699. readers

  1700. of

  1701. their

  1702. Bible.

  1703. They're

  1704. not

  1705. obedient

  1706. to

  1707. the

  1708. call

  1709. of

  1710. the

  1711. Bible.

  1712. But

  1713. some

  1714. of

  1715. the

  1716. nuances,

  1717. some

  1718. of

  1719. us

  1720. denominationally

  1721. !

  1722. We're

  1723. so

  1724. close

  1725. in

  1726. so

  1727. many

  1728. ways,

  1729. yet

  1730. one

  1731. thing,

  1732. and

  1733. our

  1734. translative

  1735. errors

  1736. are

  1737. ours,

  1738. not

  1739. the

  1740. Bible's.

  1741. So

  1742. the

  1743. problem

  1744. is that

  1745. we're

  1746. humans,

  1747. and

  1748. we're

  1749. working

  1750. out

  1751. some

  1752. of

  1753. the

  1754. complexities

  1755. of

  1756. the

  1757. Scripture,

  1758. but

  1759. still the

  1760. clarity

  1761. of

  1762. Scripture

  1763. as a

  1764. doctrine

  1765. stands.

  1766. We

  1767. can

  1768. know

  1769. how

  1770. it

  1771. is

  1772. where

  1773. to

  1774. be

  1775. saved,

  1776. how

  1777. it

  1778. is

  1779. where

  1780. to

  1781. follow

  1782. God.

  1783. The

  1784. necessity

  1785. of

  1786. Scripture.

  1787. The

  1788. necessity

  1789. of

  1790. Scripture

  1791. means that

  1792. the Bible

  1793. is

  1794. necessary

  1795. for

  1796. knowing

  1797. the

  1798. gospel,

  1799. for

  1800. maintaining

  1801. spiritual

  1802. life,

  1803. and for

  1804. knowing

  1805. God's

  1806. will,

  1807. but

  1808. is not

  1809. necessary

  1810. for

  1811. knowing

  1812. that

  1813. God

  1814. exists,

  1815. or for

  1816. knowing

  1817. something

  1818. about

  1819. God's

  1820. character

  1821. and

  1822. moral

  1823. laws.

  1824. These

  1825. things

  1826. can be

  1827. observed

  1828. in the

  1829. world

  1830. around

  1831. us,

  1832. but

  1833. it

  1834. is

  1835. necessary

  1836. for

  1837. knowing

  1838. the

  1839. gospel,

  1840. for

  1841. maintaining

  1842. spiritual

  1843. life,

  1844. and for

  1845. knowing

  1846. God's

  1847. will.

  1848. So

  1849. for

  1850. practices

  1851. of

  1852. faith,

  1853. the

  1854. Bible

  1855. is

  1856. necessary.

  1857. Romans

  1858. 10,

  1859. 17,

  1860. so faith

  1861. comes from

  1862. hearing,

  1863. and hearing

  1864. through the

  1865. word of

  1866. Christ,

  1867. either spoken

  1868. or picked

  1869. up and

  1870. read.

  1871. This is the

  1872. way that

  1873. faith is

  1874. produced in

  1875. us,

  1876. both saving

  1877. faith and

  1878. continuing

  1879. faith.

  1880. Scripture

  1881. is necessary

  1882. for that.

  1883. The

  1884. sufficiency

  1885. of Scripture,

  1886. this is one

  1887. of my

  1888. favorites,

  1889. the

  1890. sufficiency

  1891. of Scripture

  1892. means

  1893. that

  1894. Scripture

  1895. contained

  1896. all the

  1897. words of

  1898. God

  1899. He

  1900. intended

  1901. His

  1902. people

  1903. to

  1904. have

  1905. at

  1906. each

  1907. stage

  1908. of

  1909. redemptive

  1910. history,

  1911. and that

  1912. it now

  1913. contains

  1914. all the

  1915. words of

  1916. God

  1917. we need

  1918. for

  1919. salvation,

  1920. for

  1921. trusting

  1922. Him

  1923. perfectly,

  1924. and for

  1925. obeying

  1926. Him

  1927. perfectly.

  1928. So,

  1929. the

  1930. revelation

  1931. unfolded

  1932. to

  1933. God's

  1934. people,

  1935. and it

  1936. was

  1937. sufficient

  1938. at

  1939. each

  1940. of

  1941. those

  1942. stages

  1943. of

  1944. its

  1945. unfolding,

  1946. as it

  1947. was

  1948. delivered

  1949. across

  1950. time.

  1951. But now,

  1952. we find

  1953. ourselves

  1954. with a

  1955. clothed

  1956. canon,

  1957. right?

  1958. The

  1959. Scriptures

  1960. have been

  1961. clothed,

  1962. 66

  1963. books,

  1964. this is

  1965. the

  1966. canonized

  1967. Bible

  1968. of the

  1969. Christian

  1970. church,

  1971. I'm

  1972. going to

  1973. make a

  1974. case

  1975. for that

  1976. to you

  1977. in brief

  1978. in a

  1979. moment.

  1980. But this

  1981. is ours,

  1982. we pick

  1983. it up,

  1984. it gives

  1985. us

  1986. everything

  1987. we need,

  1988. it's

  1989. sufficient

  1990. in every

  1991. way for

  1992. salvation,

  1993. for trusting

  1994. Him

  1995. perfectly,

  1996. and for

  1997. God.

  1998. And beloved,

  1999. I say too

  2000. often in

  2001. our church

  2002. leadership,

  2003. and in our

  2004. church

  2005. membership,

  2006. in a

  2007. general way,

  2008. that this

  2009. just gets put

  2010. up on the

  2011. shelf as

  2012. another

  2013. book,

  2014. just gets

  2015. slid up

  2016. on the

  2017. shelf,

  2018. and there's

  2019. so many

  2020. books that

  2021. tell you

  2022. how things

  2023. ought to

  2024. be done,

  2025. what it

  2026. looks like

  2027. to follow

  2028. Christ,

  2029. and so

  2030. many of

  2031. those

  2032. err.

  2033. Now,

  2034. I am a

  2035. reader of

  2036. books,

  2037. I love

  2038. books,

  2039. my goal

  2040. every year

  2041. is to read

  2042. 50 books,

  2043. which means

  2044. I think my

  2045. high score

  2046. is 32

  2047. right now,

  2048. I am not

  2049. on track to

  2050. meet that

  2051. this year,

  2052. but maybe

  2053. I'll be

  2054. able to

  2055. do some

  2056. catching up

  2057. this summer,

  2058. I love

  2059. to read,

  2060. the only

  2061. books worth

  2062. reading are

  2063. rich in

  2064. scripture,

  2065. they point

  2066. us back

  2067. to the

  2068. Bible,

  2069. they're just

  2070. helping us

  2071. better comprehend

  2072. what the

  2073. Bible has

  2074. to say,

  2075. right?

  2076. Topically,

  2077. specifically,

  2078. you pick up a

  2079. book on a

  2080. good topic,

  2081. and it's

  2082. pulling together

  2083. the scripture

  2084. for you,

  2085. and laying

  2086. out the

  2087. theme for

  2088. you,

  2089. as is

  2090. presented in

  2091. all of

  2092. the Bible.

  2093. But the

  2094. scripture

  2095. itself is

  2096. sufficient.

  2097. I am

  2098. thankful that

  2099. I,

  2100. and this is

  2101. not an

  2102. anti-seminary

  2103. pitch,

  2104. but I'm

  2105. thankful that

  2106. I didn't

  2107. go to

  2108. seminary,

  2109. because it

  2110. made me

  2111. really desperate

  2112. to know

  2113. what the

  2114. Bible said.

  2115. I just

  2116. had no

  2117. clue what

  2118. we were

  2119. doing when

  2120. we started

  2121. this,

  2122. but I

  2123. had this

  2124. great manual,

  2125. and it

  2126. had all

  2127. the answers

  2128. in it

  2129. for how

  2130. we needed

  2131. to conduct

  2132. ourselves

  2133. as a

  2134. church,

  2135. and for

  2136. myself as

  2137. a pastor.

  2138. So the

  2139. sufficiency of

  2140. scripture is

  2141. extremely

  2142. precious to

  2143. me.

  2144. Revelation

    Revelation 22:18

  2145. chapter 22,

  2146. verses 18

  2147. and 19,

  2148. this is the

  2149. very end

  2150. of the

  2151. canon,

  2152. the last

  2153. chapter of

  2154. the book

  2155. of Revelation.

  2156. I warn

  2157. everyone who

  2158. hears the

  2159. words of

  2160. the

  2161. prophecy

  2162. of this

  2163. book,

  2164. if anyone

  2165. adds to

  2166. them,

  2167. God will

  2168. add to

  2169. him the

  2170. plagues

  2171. described

  2172. in this

  2173. book.

  2174. And if

  2175. anyone

  2176. takes away

  2177. from the

  2178. words of

  2179. the book

  2180. of this

  2181. prophecy,

  2182. God will

  2183. take away

  2184. his share

  2185. in the

  2186. tree of

  2187. life and

  2188. in the

  2189. holy city,

  2190. which are

  2191. described

  2192. in this

  2193. book.

  2194. Now,

  2195. of course,

  2196. the primary

  2197. reference of

  2198. these two

  2199. verses is to

  2200. the book

  2201. of Revelation.

  2202. But its

  2203. placement at

  2204. the end of

  2205. the canon

  2206. I think

  2207. is incredibly

  2208. significant.

  2209. And the

  2210. placement of

  2211. these two

  2212. verses in

  2213. the last

  2214. chapter of

  2215. our

  2216. scripture is

  2217. significant.

  2218. And I

  2219. think that it

  2220. yields a

  2221. second application

  2222. to the

  2223. whole of

  2224. the Christian

  2225. Bible.

  2226. So the

  2227. Bereans

  2228. received the

  2229. word with

  2230. all eagerness,

  2231. right?

  2232. They were

  2233. teachable and

  2234. they were

  2235. examining the

  2236. scriptures daily

  2237. to see if

  2238. these things

  2239. were so.

  2240. So what

  2241. is Luke

  2242. referring to

  2243. when he

  2244. says the

  2245. scriptures?

  2246. They were

  2247. examining the

  2248. scriptures.

  2249. What does

  2250. he mean?

  2251. He is

  2252. referring to

  2253. the Jewish

  2254. canon,

  2255. right?

  2256. What is

  2257. called the

  2258. Tanakh.

  2259. If you're

  2260. meeting with

  2261. an unbelieving

  2262. Jew,

  2263. don't call it

  2264. the Old

  2265. Testament.

  2266. That's super

  2267. offensive to

  2268. them.

  2269. Call it the

  2270. Tanakh.

  2271. The 39

  2272. books of

  2273. our Old

  2274. Testament.

  2275. So it's our

  2276. Old Testament,

  2277. 39 books.

  2278. this is what

  2279. he's referring

  2280. to.

  2281. Turn with me,

  2282. if you will,

  2283. to your table

  2284. of contents

  2285. in your

  2286. copy of

  2287. God's

  2288. Word.

  2289. If you were

  2290. doing this

  2291. digitally,

  2292. I don't

  2293. know if

  2294. you have a

  2295. table of

  2296. contents on

  2297. your digital

  2298. Bible.

  2299. I'm not

  2300. sure.

  2301. sure.

  2302. I'm not

  2303. sure.

  2304. I'm not

  2305. sure.

  2306. I'm not

  2307. sure.

  2308. I'm not

  2309. sure.

  2310. I'm not

  2311. sure.

  2312. I'm not

  2313. sure.

  2314. I'm not

  2315. sure.

  2316. So you'll

  2317. see in your

  2318. table of

  2319. contents,

  2320. the Old

  2321. Testament,

  2322. the New

  2323. Testament,

  2324. the Old

  2325. Testament.

  2326. They're not

  2327. numbered for

  2328. you,

  2329. but there

  2330. are 39

  2331. books in

  2332. the Old

  2333. Testament.

  2334. If you do

  2335. a quick

  2336. count and

  2337. you have

  2338. more than

  2339. 39 books

  2340. in your

  2341. Old

  2342. Testament,

  2343. you need

  2344. to get a

  2345. new copy

  2346. of the

  2347. Bible,

  2348. it's possible,

  2349. it is possible

  2350. that you would

  2351. have a whole

  2352. set of books

  2353. we won't talk

  2354. about right

  2355. now,

  2356. but they

  2357. don't belong

  2358. in the

  2359. canon of

  2360. Christian

  2361. Scripture.

  2362. 39 is

  2363. going to

  2364. begin with

  2365. Genesis

  2366. and end

  2367. with the

  2368. book of

  2369. Malachi.

  2370. So that

  2371. should be

  2372. the way,

  2373. just out of

  2374. curiosity,

  2375. this is

  2376. getting very

  2377. lecturing,

  2378. I'm sorry,

  2379. anybody have

  2380. something that's

  2381. different?

  2382. Are you willing

  2383. to put your

  2384. hand up?

  2385. I'd probably

  2386. not,

  2387. I'd probably

  2388. just made

  2389. you unwilling

  2390. to put

  2391. your hand

  2392. up.

  2393. Okay,

  2394. come tell

  2395. me later

  2396. if you

  2397. do,

  2398. I'd love

  2399. to see

  2400. what you've

  2401. got going

  2402. on there.

  2403. Okay,

  2404. so this is

  2405. the order

  2406. of our

  2407. Old

  2408. Testament.

  2409. Many

  2410. people don't

  2411. know this,

  2412. it's not

  2413. chronological,

  2414. it's ordered

  2415. by types

  2416. of book,

  2417. and the

  2418. way we

  2419. got this

  2420. order was

  2421. from the

  2422. Septuagint,

  2423. which was

  2424. the Greek

  2425. translation of

  2426. the Old

  2427. Testament,

  2428. which is

  2429. carried into

  2430. our day

  2431. because in

  2432. the early

  2433. church,

  2434. they were

  2435. primarily

  2436. using the

  2437. Septuagint as

  2438. their copy of

  2439. the Old

  2440. Testament

  2441. scriptures.

  2442. So that's

  2443. why we end

  2444. up with

  2445. this order.

  2446. But this was

  2447. not the order

  2448. of the canon

  2449. in Jesus'

  2450. day.

  2451. You may not

  2452. be aware of

  2453. that.

  2454. I wasn't

  2455. until some

  2456. years ago.

  2457. Jesus'

  2458. Bible,

  2459. Jesus'

  2460. Old Testament

  2461. was divided

  2462. up into

  2463. three sections.

  2464. Torah,

  2465. which was

  2466. the law,

  2467. Genesis,

  2468. Exodus,

  2469. Leviticus,

  2470. Numbers,

  2471. Deuteronomy,

  2472. the Nebaim,

  2473. which is the

  2474. prophets,

  2475. Joshua,

  2476. Judges,

  2477. 1 and 2 Samuel,

  2478. 1 and 2 Kings,

  2479. Isaiah,

  2480. Jeremiah,

  2481. Ezekiel,

  2482. and then the

  2483. minor prophets,

  2484. which were

  2485. treated as

  2486. one book,

  2487. which in

  2488. our Old

  2489. Testament are

  2490. twelve,

  2491. Hosea,

  2492. Joel,

  2493. Amos,

  2494. Obadiah,

  2495. Jonah,

  2496. Micah,

  2497. Nahum,

  2498. Habakkuk,

  2499. Zephaniah,

  2500. Haggai,

  2501. Zechariah,

  2502. Malachi,

  2503. okay,

  2504. and then

  2505. the Chetuvim,

  2506. or the

  2507. writings,

  2508. which is called

  2509. the writings,

  2510. and this is

  2511. in the order

  2512. that it would

  2513. have been,

  2514. Psalms,

  2515. Job,

  2516. Proverbs,

  2517. Ruth,

  2518. Song of

  2519. Solomon,

  2520. Ecclesiastics,

  2521. !

  2522. would have began

  2523. with Genesis,

  2524. and would have

  2525. ended with

  2526. 2 Chronicles,

  2527. okay,

  2528. you're tracking

  2529. my logic,

  2530. just a different

  2531. order,

  2532. same 39 books,

  2533. but in a different

  2534. order,

  2535. okay,

  2536. and here's where

  2537. it gets really

  2538. good,

  2539. turn to Luke

    Luke 11:49

  2540. chapter 11,

  2541. verse 49,

  2542. and the case

  2543. I'm making

  2544. in summary

  2545. is this was

  2546. the scriptures,

  2547. now our Old

  2548. Testament,

  2549. that the Bereans

  2550. used,

  2551. and this is why

  2552. we still use

  2553. these 39 books,

  2554. in a different

  2555. order,

  2556. right,

  2557. but that's okay,

  2558. that's not

  2559. significant,

  2560. but these are

  2561. the 39 that

  2562. are canonized

  2563. in our Old

  2564. Testament,

  2565. this is wonderful,

  2566. Luke 11,

    Luke 11:49–51

  2567. verse 49

  2568. through 51,

  2569. Jesus speaking,

  2570. therefore also

  2571. the wisdom

  2572. of God said,

  2573. I will send

  2574. them prophets

  2575. and apostles,

  2576. some of whom

  2577. they will kill

  2578. and persecute,

  2579. so that the

  2580. blood of all

  2581. the prophets

  2582. shed from the

  2583. foundation of

  2584. the world

  2585. may be charged

  2586. against this

  2587. generation,

  2588. here's the

  2589. significant

  2590. statement,

  2591. from the

  2592. blood of

  2593. Abel,

  2594. to the

  2595. blood of

  2596. Zechariah,

  2597. who perished

  2598. between the

  2599. altar and

  2600. the sanctuary,

  2601. yes,

  2602. I tell you,

  2603. it will be

  2604. required of

  2605. this generation,

  2606. so Jesus

  2607. references two

  2608. prophets who

  2609. were martyred,

  2610. right,

  2611. he starts with

  2612. Abel,

  2613. this is of

  2614. Cain and

  2615. Abel,

  2616. and it's

  2617. likely that

  2618. the explanation

  2619. of why he'd

  2620. be calling him

  2621. a prophet,

  2622. right,

  2623. would be

  2624. Genesis 4,

  2625. 10,

  2626. and the

  2627. Lord said,

  2628. what have

  2629. you done?

  2630. The voice

  2631. of your

  2632. brother's blood

  2633. is crying

  2634. to me

  2635. from the

  2636. ground,

  2637. right,

  2638. so there's

  2639. a proclamation

  2640. being made

  2641. against Cain

  2642. by the blood

  2643. of Abel,

  2644. right,

  2645. so it's likely

  2646. this is why

  2647. Jesus is

  2648. referring to

  2649. him as a

  2650. prophet,

  2651. Genesis 4,

    Genesis 4:10

  2652. verse 10,

  2653. okay,

  2654. chronologically,

  2655. the last

  2656. prophet martyred

  2657. was Uriah,

  2658. some 200 years

  2659. after the

  2660. Zechariah that

  2661. Jesus refers

  2662. to here,

  2663. chronologically,

  2664. it's Uriah,

  2665. you can read

  2666. about that in

  2667. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 26 chapter mention

  2668. 26,

  2669. right,

  2670. Jesus instead

  2671. talks about

  2672. Zechariah who's

  2673. different than

  2674. the prophet who

  2675. wrote the book

  2676. Zechariah,

  2677. it's a different

  2678. Zechariah,

  2679. in 2nd

  2680. Chronicles 24,

  2681. verse 20 and

  2682. 21,

  2683. then the spirit

  2684. of God

  2685. clothed

  2686. Zechariah the

  2687. son of

  2688. Jehoiada the

  2689. priest,

  2690. and he stood

  2691. above the people

  2692. and said to

  2693. them,

  2694. thus says God,

  2695. why do you

  2696. break the

  2697. commandments of

  2698. the Lord so

  2699. that you

  2700. cannot prosper?

  2701. Because you

  2702. have forsaken

  2703. the Lord,

  2704. he has forsaken

  2705. you,

  2706. but they

  2707. conspired against

  2708. him and by

  2709. command of the

  2710. king they

  2711. stoned him

  2712. with stones

  2713. in the court

  2714. of the house

  2715. of the Lord.

  2716. So Zechariah

  2717. is stoned to

  2718. death in 2nd

  2719. Chronicles 24,

  2720. verse 21.

  2721. So the

  2722. significance of

  2723. that is that

  2724. Jesus' Bible,

  2725. remember the

  2726. order is

  2727. different,

  2728. it starts with

  2729. the book of

  2730. Genesis,

  2731. it ends with

  2732. the book of

  2733. 2nd

  2734. Chronicles.

  2735. So he's not

  2736. speaking in a

  2737. timeline in

  2738. chronological terms,

  2739. he's speaking in

  2740. their Bible.

  2741. It would be like

  2742. if we said from

  2743. Genesis to

  2744. Revelation,

  2745. the entire book

  2746. is true,

  2747. right?

  2748. He's bookending

  2749. it, right,

  2750. for their

  2751. understanding and

  2752. we lose that

  2753. because we don't

  2754. have the Jewish

  2755. canon in that

  2756. order in our

  2757. hands any longer.

  2758. So Jesus'

  2759. scripture,

  2760. the scripture of

  2761. his day,

  2762. now our

  2763. Old Testament,

  2764. right?

  2765. It's why we

  2766. take it as the

  2767. Old Testament

  2768. Bible.

  2769. So that's

  2770. incredible,

  2771. right?

  2772. I mean,

  2773. it's an amazing

  2774. proof.

  2775. A Peculiar

  2776. Glory is a

  2777. John Piper book

  2778. you should read

  2779. if you're

  2780. interested.

  2781. You should

  2782. just read it,

  2783. whether you're

  2784. interested or

  2785. not,

  2786. it'd be good

  2787. for you to

  2788. do that.

  2789. Really wonderful

  2790. he makes that

  2791. case in longer

  2792. form than I

  2793. just did for

  2794. you, right?

  2795. So we have

  2796. the Old

  2797. Testament,

  2798. it was Jesus'

  2799. Old Testament,

  2800. that's good

  2801. enough for me,

  2802. not what of

  2803. the New Testament.

  2804. It gets a little

  2805. more complicated

  2806. and I can't

  2807. make the full

  2808. case to you

  2809. this morning,

  2810. both for the

  2811. sake of time

  2812. and preparation,

  2813. but in brief

  2814. I want to give

  2815. you this,

  2816. the additional

  2817. 27 books,

  2818. the 27 books

  2819. of our New

  2820. Testament,

  2821. right,

  2822. that we accept

  2823. into the canon,

  2824. right?

  2825. How do we

  2826. know,

  2827. right?

  2828. Too much to

  2829. say,

  2830. so let me

  2831. give you this

  2832. single affirmation

  2833. and commend

  2834. to you

  2835. some further

  2836. study on

  2837. it.

  2838. We accept

  2839. the canonicity

  2840. of the New

  2841. Testament,

  2842. right?

  2843. We accept

  2844. the 27 books

  2845. as the Word

  2846. of God

  2847. because of

  2848. their

  2849. apostolicity,

  2850. apostolicity,

  2851. right?

  2852. Not simply

  2853. meaning written

  2854. by an

  2855. apostle or

  2856. in close

  2857. association

  2858. with an

  2859. apostle,

  2860. although it

  2861. does mean

  2862. those things,

  2863. right?

  2864. The book

  2865. was either

  2866. written by

  2867. an apostle

  2868. or in

  2869. close

  2870. association

  2871. with an

  2872. apostle

  2873. like Luke,

  2874. right?

  2875. Wrote the

  2876. Gospel of

  2877. Luke and

  2878. the book

  2879. of Acts.

  2880. Not an

  2881. apostle,

  2882. but in

  2883. close

  2884. association.

  2885. Was getting

  2886. first-hand

  2887. information

  2888. from an

  2889. apostle.

  2890. But it

  2891. doesn't just

  2892. mean that,

  2893. but the

  2894. words of

  2895. God

  2896. written by

  2897. inspired

  2898. men.

  2899. So,

  2900. we're trying

  2901. to understand

  2902. how is it

  2903. that we

  2904. figure out

  2905. apostolicity?

  2906. Like,

  2907. how do we

  2908. know that

  2909. God inspired

  2910. these men

  2911. that wrote

  2912. these

  2913. books?

  2914. Paul writes

  2915. this in

  2916. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:11–13

  2917. chapter 2

  2918. verses 11

  2919. through 13.

  2920. For who

  2921. knows a

  2922. person's

  2923. thoughts

  2924. except the

  2925. spirit of

  2926. that person

  2927. which is

  2928. in him?

  2929. So,

  2930. also,

  2931. no one

  2932. comprehends

  2933. the thoughts

  2934. of God

  2935. except the

  2936. spirit of

  2937. God.

  2938. Now,

  2939. we have

  2940. received

  2941. not the

  2942. spirit of

  2943. the world,

  2944. but the

  2945. spirit who

  2946. is from

  2947. God,

  2948. that we

  2949. might

  2950. understand

  2951. the things

  2952. freely

  2953. given us

  2954. by

  2955. God.

  2956. So,

  2957. we,

  2958. he's talking

  2959. about the

  2960. apostles,

  2961. have received

  2962. the spirit

  2963. of God

  2964. so that

  2965. we can

  2966. understand

  2967. the things

  2968. given to

  2969. us by

  2970. God.

  2971. Verse 13,

  2972. and we

  2973. impart this,

  2974. we teach

  2975. this,

  2976. in words,

  2977. not taught

  2978. by human

  2979. wisdom,

  2980. but taught

  2981. by the

  2982. spirit,

  2983. interpreting

  2984. spiritual truths

  2985. to those

  2986. who are

  2987. spiritual.

  2988. spiritual.

  2989. So,

  2990. there's a

  2991. spiritual

  2992. activity

  2993. happening,

  2994. this double

  2995. miracle of

  2996. the inspiration

  2997. in the

  2998. writing as

  2999. well as

  3000. in the

  3001. understanding.

  3002. So,

  3003. how do we

  3004. know that

  3005. our New

  3006. Testament

  3007. canon is

  3008. the words

  3009. of God?

  3010. The process

  3011. of canonization

  3012. was governed

  3013. by

  3014. spiritual

  3015. reality

  3016. being

  3017. spiritually

  3018. discerned

  3019. by the

  3020. church.

  3021. Again,

  3022. I'm going to

  3023. read to you

  3024. from A Peculiar

  3025. Glory,

  3026. and just see

  3027. if you can

  3028. track me

  3029. here.

  3030. Michael Kruger

  3031. wrote a book

  3032. recently called

  3033. Canon Revisited,

  3034. Establishing the

  3035. Origins and

  3036. Authority of

  3037. the New

  3038. Testament

  3039. books,

  3040. wrote this,

  3041. The apostles

  3042. were mouthpieces

  3043. of Christ

  3044. and were given

  3045. the task of

  3046. delivering and

  3047. preserving this

  3048. redemptive

  3049. message,

  3050. which was

  3051. originally delivered

  3052. orally,

  3053. but eventually

  3054. was embodied

  3055. in a more

  3056. permanent

  3057. written form.

  3058. The New

  3059. Testament books

  3060. were considered

  3061. authoritative

  3062. not because

  3063. the church

  3064. declared them

  3065. to be so,

  3066. or even

  3067. because they

  3068. were written

  3069. directly by

  3070. an apostle,

  3071. but because

  3072. they were

  3073. understood

  3074. to bear

  3075. the essential

  3076. apostolic

  3077. deposit.

  3078. For this

  3079. reason,

  3080. Ritterbos,

  3081. who was a

  3082. Dutch

  3083. theologian,

  3084. died in

  3085. 2007,

  3086. is able to

  3087. assert,

  3088. and I love

  3089. this,

  3090. in its

  3091. redemptive

  3092. historical sense,

  3093. the canon

  3094. is not the

  3095. product of

  3096. the church,

  3097. rather,

  3098. the church

  3099. is the

  3100. product of

  3101. the canon.

  3102. Or as the

  3103. New Testament

  3104. scholar F.F.

  3105. Bruce said

  3106. a generation

  3107. earlier,

  3108. the New Testament

  3109. canon was not

  3110. demarcated by

  3111. the arbitrary

  3112. degree of any

  3113. church council.

  3114. When at last

  3115. a church council,

  3116. the Senate of

  3117. Hippo in

  3118. AD 393 listed

  3119. the 27 books

  3120. of the New

  3121. Testament,

  3122. it did not

  3123. confer upon

  3124. them any

  3125. authority which

  3126. they did not

  3127. already possess,

  3128. but simply

  3129. recorded their

  3130. previously

  3131. established

  3132. canonicity.

  3133. So the

  3134. letters of

  3135. the apostles

  3136. and those

  3137. who were

  3138. close to

  3139. the apostles

  3140. had been

  3141. active in

  3142. the lives

  3143. of the

  3144. church.

  3145. Here's Nathan's

  3146. simple summary

  3147. of everything

  3148. I just said.

  3149. It had

  3150. proved out

  3151. its God

  3152. inspiration.

  3153. It had been

  3154. at work

  3155. in the

  3156. church.

  3157. And Piper's

  3158. book,

  3159. A Peculiar

  3160. Glory,

  3161. is titled

  3162. That because

  3163. of the

  3164. way that

  3165. the scriptures

  3166. are affirmed

  3167. to those

  3168. who believe

  3169. in Christ.

  3170. That we

  3171. see it

  3172. living and

  3173. active in

  3174. our own

  3175. lives.

  3176. That we

  3177. pick it

  3178. up and

  3179. it causes

  3180. us to

  3181. magnify

  3182. this Jesus

  3183. who we

  3184. cannot

  3185. tangibly

  3186. touch and

  3187. see.

  3188. A Peculiar

  3189. Glory,

  3190. that this

  3191. book comes

  3192. to life

  3193. to those

  3194. who are

  3195. gods.

  3196. And so

  3197. we trust

  3198. that process

  3199. as much,

  3200. much later

  3201. New Testament

  3202. followers.

  3203. And so

  3204. we have

  3205. the closed

  3206. canon,

  3207. the 49

  3208. books of

  3209. the Old

  3210. Testaments

  3211. and 27

  3212. books of

  3213. the New

  3214. Testament.

  3215. And beloved,

  3216. we should

  3217. know them.

  3218. We should

  3219. read them

  3220. and we

  3221. should meditate

  3222. upon them

  3223. and we

  3224. should

  3225. memorize

  3226. them.

  3227. We should

  3228. have our

  3229. lives

  3230. and our

  3231. church

  3232. and our

  3233. community

  3234. and our

  3235. world

  3236. shaped by

  3237. them.

  3238. Let us

  3239. love

  3240. this

  3241. treasure.

  3242. This is

  3243. a gift.

  3244. It's been

  3245. so generously

  3246. given to

  3247. this generation.

  3248. We have

  3249. ample

  3250. resources

  3251. to know

  3252. God

  3253. by His

  3254. Word.

  3255. And let us

  3256. be like the

  3257. Bereans,

  3258. receiving the

  3259. Word with

  3260. all eagerness

  3261. and examining

  3262. the Scriptures

  3263. daily to see

  3264. if these

  3265. things are

  3266. so.

  3267. Let's pray

  3268. together.

  3269. Let's pray

  3270. together.
