  1. Well, I'm glad to be here with you this morning, and I am thankful that it is Easter Sunday.

  2. I am also thankful that as followers of Jesus Christ, that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ the other 364 days of the year.

  3. I'm thankful that we don't have to dig deep into our catalog of songs to sing songs about the resurrection.

  4. I'm thankful for its ongoing and ever-present implication in my life.

  5. Jesus is alive, and I have life in Him as a result.

  6. This morning, we're going to continue our study of Acts in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  7. I'm glad that a year ago on this Sunday, we were in Mark chapter 16, which the resurrection story of Mark's telling is there.

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  8. In our text today, Paul speaks of the resurrection, and he speaks of the resurrection as the affirmation of gospel truth.

  9. And so as we gather today as the church, let me assert to you that the gathering of the church is for the Christian.

  10. This primarily is for those followers of Jesus Christ in order to be equipped to go out there and to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

  11. As you've heard me say, we are gathered in order to go.

  12. And this morning, the burden for me is that you would see in the life of Paul the way in which he deals with the Athenians,

  13. and he shares this good news of Jesus Christ.

  14. Give an affirmation by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  15. Because as followers of Jesus, you are His marketing plan.

  16. You are meant to go out and to be light in a dark world.

  17. Now, even as I say this, I am thankful that there are many churches gathered today that will have people sitting in their crowds that have not heard the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  18. I am thankful today that there are many pastors who typically don't preach the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  19. who are having to wrestle with all of the implications of the resurrection.

  20. And I pray that they are pouring forth gospel truth to a people that desperately need to hear it.

  21. But I want you to understand why and to appreciate why we celebrate the resurrection of Christ every single day,

  22. and certainly on the Lord's Day when we gather together.

  23. It is empowering for our living.

  24. Don't leave here and wait until next year to consider the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus.

  25. Amen.

  26. Amen.

  27. Before I preach from Acts chapter 17, I want to pause and I want to pray.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  28. And I want you to join me in praying for this morning and what it means in our community and beyond.

  29. And then we'll turn to the text.

  30. So join me in a word of prayer this morning.

  31. Father God, I praise you this morning that you are the creator and the sustainer of this world.

  32. That you are sovereign.

  33. That your providence never fails at any point.

  34. You are always reigning over all things.

  35. I praise you for your gospel truth.

  36. I thank you that as we pray to you, we are praying to you clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  37. That you are hearing our prayers and you are pleased with us because you are pleased with him.

  38. I praise you this morning, Father, that you have a church.

  39. Jesus is building it.

  40. He's drawing people to himself.

  41. And I pray that that would be the case in so many gathered groups this morning.

  42. That the gospel would be preached.

  43. Sin would be addressed.

  44. The need for repentance would be poured out.

  45. That people would turn and believe in Christ.

  46. I pray, Father, that men this morning who may not even themselves know what the gospel is,

  47. will preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  48. That we would have pastors this morning come to faith in Jesus because they have to open the word and deal with the text.

  49. I pray that countless people will know that today,

  50. that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is not firstly about them,

  51. but it's firstly about you.

  52. That they would know that they would know that they would get caught up in you bringing about the bright and proper praise that is due you this morning.

  53. Father, we know that we cannot schedule a revival.

  54. There's no tent large enough to rent.

  55. And no personality persuasive enough to bring about a working of your spirit.

  56. We know that for true revival to happen, you must visit us in a special way.

  57. I would ask that you do that this morning across our communities.

  58. Even now, as I'm sure, at 1120, men are opening up your word and speaking from it.

  59. Save souls this morning, Father.

  60. Do that in our midst.

  61. Equip us for the going out.

  62. Help us to see that we are meant to be your billboards,

  63. displaying your grace and mercy.

  64. And I pray all of this in Christ's name.

  65. Amen.

  66. Okay.

  67. My head is clear now, I think.

  68. So the book of Acts.

  69. You've heard me call the book of Acts,

  70. the Acts of the risen and ascended Jesus.

  71. That he is now still active, right,

  72. by the agency of the Holy Spirit in the life of his church.

  73. And we exist still as part of this telling of the story.

  74. But we get to step back, right?

  75. Luke, for our benefit,

  76. pinning down what happened in the life of the early church.

  77. So we're going to continue our study by looking at Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17:16–34

  78. verses 16 through 34.

  79. So if you're not already there,

  80. please take your copy of God's word and join me.

  81. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  82. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  83. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  84. and obey its commands.

  85. And I'll begin reading in verse 16 of Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  86. Now, while Paul was waiting for them at Athens,

  87. his spirit was provoked within him

  88. as he saw that the city was full of idols.

  89. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons

  90. and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.

  91. Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him.

  92. And some said,

  93. what does this babbler wish to say?

  94. Others said,

  95. he seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities

  96. because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.

  97. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus saying,

  98. may we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting

  99. for you bring some strange things to our ears.

  100. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.

  101. Now, all the Athenians and the foreigners who live there

  102. would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.

  103. So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus said,

  104. men of Athens,

  105. I perceive that in every way you are very religious.

  106. For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship,

  107. I found also an altar with this inscription to the unknown God.

  108. What therefore you worship as unknown,

  109. this I proclaim to you.

  110. The God who made the world and everything in it,

  111. being Lord of heaven and earth,

  112. does not live in temples made by man,

  113. nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything,

  114. since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.

  115. And he made from one man every nation of mankind

  116. to live on all the face of the earth,

  117. having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

  118. that they should seek God

  119. and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.

  120. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,

  121. for in him we live and move and have our being,

  122. as even some of your own poets have said,

  123. for we are indeed his offspring.

  124. Being then God's offspring,

  125. we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone,

  126. an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

  127. The times of ignorance God overlooked,

  128. but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

  129. because he has fixed the day on which he will judge the world in righteousness

  130. by a man whom he has appointed.

  131. And of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.

  132. Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead,

  133. some mocked,

  134. but others said,

  135. we will hear you again about this.

  136. So Paul went out from their midst,

  137. but some men joined him and believed,

  138. among whom also were Dionysius,

  139. the Areopagite,

  140. and a woman named Damaris,

  141. and others with them.

  142. Now this morning our study of this text

  143. will be structured in the following way.

  144. Number one,

  145. mankind's need to philosophize.

  146. You could say mankind's need for philosophy.

  147. That spelling is more comfortable for you.

  148. Number two,

  149. mankind's need to know who God is.

  150. And number three,

  151. mankind's need to know what God has said.

  152. How are those for your three Easter morning points?

  153. Mankind's need to philosophize.

  154. Mankind's need to know who God is.

  155. Mankind's need to know what God has said.

  156. So Paul has traveled from Berea to Athens.

  157. You can look back previously in chapter 17

  158. and read more about that

  159. if you have not been with us the past couple of weeks.

  160. Up in the region of Macedonia,

  161. he's no longer there now.

  162. He's traveled far south on the peninsula,

  163. and he is waiting for Silas and Timothy to rejoin him.

  164. You may recall that as he leaves Berea,

  165. he gives a command.

  166. He leaves Silas and Timothy behind,

  167. but he gives a command for them to come and join him.

  168. Verse 16,

  169. while he was waiting for them at Athens,

  170. his spirit is provoked within him

  171. as he sees this city that is full of all these graven images,

  172. all of these idols, right?

  173. Things that have been crafted out of stone and wood and gold

  174. that are set up all over the city of Athens.

  175. And he's moved by the idolatry of the city.

  176. Quite possibly by zeal for the glory of the one true God

  177. and by compassion for the occupants of the city.

  178. However, it was that his spirit was provoked within him.

  179. He immediately turns and he reasons in the synagogue with the Jews

  180. and the devout persons and in the marketplace every day

  181. with those who happen to be there.

  182. So as was his custom,

  183. as we noted in verse 2 of chapter 17,

  184. Paul goes to the synagogue

  185. and on the Sabbath to share the gospel with his countrymen

  186. and to the God-fearing Gentiles.

  187. Again, another phrase for people who were not Jewish in bloodline,

  188. but people who were pursuing God through Judaism.

  189. Devout persons.

  190. These were God-fearing Gentiles.

  191. People familiar with the scripture of their day,

  192. our Old Testament.

  193. So on the Sabbath, he's with these people,

  194. his countrymen and the God-fearing Gentiles,

  195. sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

  196. And he spends his weekdays sharing the gospel

  197. with anyone who would listen in the marketplace.

  198. Now, don't imagine him here wandering about a Kroger

  199. looking for people to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  200. The marketplace would have been the center of city life in Athens,

  201. where goods were traded as well as ideas.

  202. And it is here that this drama begins to unfold

  203. as he encounters two of the prominent philosophies of the day.

  204. So this brings us to our first point,

  205. mankind's need to philosophize.

  206. Now, some will frame philosophy as inherently evil.

  207. Right?

  208. You tell somebody that you're a philosophy major,

  209. they will just assume that there's no way

  210. you're learning anything true whatsoever,

  211. which in large part is true.

  212. But philosophy itself is not evil.

  213. Certainly some philosophies are.

  214. Most, if not all philosophies, are flawed in some sense.

  215. In some way, they err.

  216. But philosophy is simply the study of theories of knowledge,

  217. reality, and or existence.

  218. Theories of knowledge, reality, and or existence.

  219. Throughout history, mankind has philosophized.

  220. Because as cognitive beings,

  221. we have an innate desire to understand our place in the world.

  222. We're not merely walking through the world with impulse.

  223. Right?

  224. Not merely ingrained responses to the environment around us.

  225. But we're thinking beings.

  226. And as thinking beings,

  227. we want to understand where it is that we fit in the world around us.

  228. All people sense that there is purpose beyond themselves.

  229. That an intelligent world has an intelligent designer of one sort or another.

  230. Let me insert a parenthetical at this point.

  231. Some will deny the truth of intelligent design.

  232. That would be to say that the world in which we live

  233. is the result of billions and billions of years of happenstances.

  234. We just happen to find ourselves in the place that we are.

  235. Enter the atheist.

  236. But even the most, let me suggest to you,

  237. devout atheist,

  238. when he is honest with himself,

  239. knows there must be something greater than he.

  240. Paul speaks to the fact that men are aware of God's existence

  241. and furthers my argument by telling us in Romans 1,

    Romans 1:18–20

  242. verses 18-20,

  243. that not only do they know that God exists,

  244. but they deny his existence because of their sinfulness.

  245. I read Romans 1, beginning in verse 18,

  246. for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  247. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  248. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  249. For what can be known about God is plain to them

  250. because God has shown it to them.

  251. For his invisible attributes,

  252. namely his eternal power and divine nature,

  253. have been clearly perceived ever since the creation of the world

  254. in the things that have been made.

  255. So they are without excuse.

  256. John says the same,

  257. but with an application to the knowledge of a revealed Savior,

  258. Jesus Christ,

  259. with an analogy of light and dark.

  260. John 1, verses 1-5.

    John 1:1–5

  261. John writes,

  262. In the beginning was the Word,

  263. and the Word was with God,

  264. and the Word was God.

  265. He was in the beginning with God.

  266. All things were made through him,

  267. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  268. In him was life,

  269. and the life was the light of men.

  270. The light shines in the darkness,

  271. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  272. So Jesus Christ,

  273. and John's telling,

  274. is the light of the world.

  275. And John continues this analogy in chapter 3,

  276. verses 19 and 20,

  277. where he writes,

  278. And this is the judgment.

  279. The light,

  280. here,

  281. Jesus Christ there,

  282. the light has come into the world.

  283. And people love the darkness

  284. rather than the light

  285. because their works were evil.

  286. For everyone who does wicked things

  287. hates the light

  288. and does not come to the light,

  289. lest his works should be exposed.

  290. What is the wickedness of mankind

  291. to invent all various forms of philosophy

  292. that suggest that we are not accountable

  293. to a holy God?

  294. We need to explain the why

  295. of why we're here.

  296. Why?

  297. Why do we exist?

  298. Why are we here?

  299. And it is the very wickedness of man

  300. that devises all types of explanations

  301. that exclude a God

  302. who is holy

  303. and places requirements on us.

  304. Why?

  305. Because mankind is evil,

  306. and mankind wants to continue

  307. in its evil ways.

  308. Mankind needs to explain its existence,

  309. and so often prefers to do so

  310. in a way that preserves its freedom to live

  311. in any way that culture deems as valuable.

  312. And Paul here encounters adherence

  313. to two such prominent philosophies.

  314. These are two of the three most popular schools

  315. of philosophy in Greece in this day,

  316. the Epicureans and the Stoics.

  317. Epicurean philosophy taught

  318. that pleasure and the avoidance of pain

  319. are the chief end of man.

  320. Sound familiar, Americans?

  321. They did not deny the existence of gods.

  322. Pantheistic, this culture.

  323. But believed they were distant

  324. and did not interfere

  325. or were concerned at all

  326. with the affairs of man.

  327. So they were functionally then atheists.

  328. The Epicurean philosophers

  329. were functionally atheists.

  330. Sure, gods exist,

  331. but they don't care.

  332. They're not intervening at all

  333. in what we're doing,

  334. and the high chief end of man

  335. is pleasure and comfort.

  336. Stoic philosophers, on the other hand,

  337. taught that self-mastery

  338. was the chief end of man.

  339. Self-mastery.

  340. Being indifferent to both pleasure and pain,

  341. being entirely cerebral

  342. and feeling nothing

  343. was the highest value.

  344. Being able to walk through

  345. whatever came your way in life,

  346. right,

  347. as a thinker

  348. and not a feeler at all.

  349. They were pantheists

  350. and believed that the gods

  351. tested their devotion

  352. with both pleasure and pain.

  353. So the gods were delving out

  354. the circumstances of the world

  355. and it was their job

  356. to respond with nothing,

  357. to not respond really at all

  358. to both pleasure and pain

  359. in the world.

  360. So,

  361. the Stoic believed

  362. that you could enjoy nothing.

  363. The Epicurean believed

  364. that you should enjoy

  365. the temporal,

  366. those things that they could

  367. touch and feel

  368. and have experience of.

  369. Christians believed

  370. that our highest joy

  371. is found in God,

  372. the one true God

  373. as revealed by Jesus

  374. and His work on the cross.

  375. Now, at this point,

  376. I want to be clear

  377. that Christianity

  378. is not a philosophy.

  379. Christianity

  380. is not a theory.

  381. Christianity

  382. is a reality.

  383. It's based in truth.

  384. To be clear,

  385. when you philosophize

  386. with people,

  387. don't present Christianity

  388. as a philosophy of life,

  389. not a theory.

  390. Our highest good,

  391. our highest aim

  392. is joy in God.

  393. The Westminster Shorter Catechism

  394. asks the question,

  395. what is the chief end of man?

  396. If you're a good Reformed Baptist,

  397. you know the answer.

  398. It's man's chief end

  399. is to glorify God

  400. and to enjoy Him forever.

  401. Now, these two

  402. extremely different philosophies,

  403. Epicureanism and Stoicism,

  404. were united in their contempt

  405. for false teaching.

  406. Someone said,

  407. this is the last part of verse 18,

  408. what does this babbler wish to say?

  409. The word babbler

  410. from the Greek

  411. literally translates,

  412. and I think ESV did well

  413. to say babbler,

  414. it literally translates,

  415. seed picker.

  416. John B. Polhill

  417. in the New American Commentary

  418. on Acts

  419. says this,

  420. the word evoked

  421. images of a bird

  422. pecking indiscriminately

  423. at seeds

  424. in a barnyard.

  425. Not a kind thing

  426. they said of Paul.

  427. It referred to

  428. a dilettante,

  429. someone who picked up

  430. scraps of ideas

  431. here and there

  432. and passed them off

  433. as profundity

  434. with no depth

  435. of understanding

  436. at all.

  437. You know people like that?

  438. Look at your Facebook feed

  439. and call somebody

  440. a seed picker

  441. from time to time.

  442. It's an insult

  443. and it was intended

  444. as an insult here

  445. to call Paul

  446. a babbler.

  447. Others said,

  448. verse 18 tells us,

  449. he seems to be

  450. a preacher

  451. of foreign divinities.

  452. This shows

  453. that they weren't

  454. paying attention

  455. to him really

  456. at all.

  457. The word translated

  458. divinities

  459. is plural

  460. in the Greek

  461. so they seem

  462. to just misunderstand

  463. him altogether.

  464. Many scholars

  465. have postulated

  466. that they misunderstood

  467. Paul

  468. and thought

  469. that he was

  470. teaching them

  471. about a God

  472. named Jesus

  473. and a God

  474. named

  475. resurrection

  476. in the Greek

  477. anastasis.

  478. So Jesus

  479. and anastasis,

  480. these foreign

  481. divinities,

  482. they didn't seem

  483. to be paying

  484. attention at all.

  485. Paul.

  486. Now,

  487. whether or not

  488. they had

  489. exactly what

  490. they were thinking

  491. cannot be known

  492. for sure

  493. from our text,

  494. but I think

  495. we can imagine

  496. that Paul did

  497. not speak

  498. about Jesus

  499. without also

  500. speaking

  501. of his resurrection.

  502. The two were

  503. always being

  504. carried along

  505. together.

  506. Paul said

  507. in Romans

    Romans 1:4

  508. chapter 1

  509. verse 4,

  510. he being

  511. Christ

  512. was declared

  513. to be

  514. the son

  515. of God

  516. in power

  517. according

  518. to the spirit

  519. of holiness

  520. by his

  521. resurrection

  522. from the dead.

  523. Jesus

  524. Christ

  525. our Lord.

  526. The affirmation

  527. that all

  528. that Jesus

  529. said he was

  530. was true.

  531. The two

  532. schools of

  533. philosophy

  534. had contempt

  535. for what Paul

  536. was preaching

  537. so they

  538. took him

  539. and they

  540. brought him

  541. to the

  542. Areopagus

  543. verse 19.

  544. Now the

  545. Areopagus

  546. was a

  547. court.

  548. It was

  549. named

  550. for the

  551. place

  552. that it

  553. had

  554. once

  555. convened

  556. and this

  557. day

  558. they

  559. probably

  560. didn't

  561. still

  562. meet

  563. up

  564. on

  565. this

  566. rock

  567. outcropping.

  568. Maybe

  569. they did.

  570. Some may

  571. want to

  572. contend with

  573. me on

  574. that.

  575. It

  576. doesn't

  577. matter.

  578. It was

  579. named

  580. after the

  581. place

  582. where they

  583. met.

  584. But you

  585. need to

  586. see this

  587. as a

  588. court

  589. that's

  590. convened

  591. to hear

  592. what Paul

  593. would have

  594. to say.

  595. And there

  596. Paul is

  597. informally

  598. asked to

  599. give an

  600. account

  601. of his

  602. teaching.

  603. And they

  604. ask him

  605. in this

  606. way.

  607. Last

  608. part of

  609. verse

  610. 19

  611. and 20.

  612. May we

  613. know

  614. what this

  615. new

  616. teaching

  617. is that

  618. you are

  619. presenting.

  620. For you

  621. bring some

  622. strange

  623. things to

  624. our ears.

  625. We wish

  626. to know

  627. therefore

  628. what these

  629. things

  630. mean.

  631. And as

  632. an apparent

  633. parenthetical

  634. I would

  635. suggest

  636. an explanation

  637. of what

  638. they asked

  639. him in

  640. verse 19

  641. and 20.

  642. Luke

  643. adds,

  644. now all

  645. the Athenians

  646. and the

  647. foreigners

  648. who lived

  649. there would

  650. spend their

  651. time in

  652. nothing except

  653. telling or

  654. hearing something

  655. new.

  656. And you have

  657. to read that

  658. as an

  659. indictment

  660. on them.

  661. They obviously

  662. did other

  663. things than

  664. hear tellings

  665. of new

  666. things.

  667. But he's

  668. characterizing

  669. them as

  670. saying they

  671. were just

  672. people who

  673. were interested

  674. in whatever

  675. anybody had

  676. to say

  677. about anything.

  678. So on

  679. the surface

  680. it seems like

  681. there's this

  682. genuine interest

  683. in what

  684. Paul had

  685. to say.

  686. But it's

  687. more likely

  688. simply a

  689. new teaching.

  690. They just

  691. want to

  692. know what

  693. is this

  694. new thing

  695. that you're

  696. going to

  697. teach us.

  698. And it

  699. is the

  700. interaction

  701. of Paul

  702. and the

  703. market

  704. with the

  705. Epiducurean

  706. and Stoic

  707. philosophers

  708. that has

  709. set the

  710. stage for

  711. him to

  712. correct the

  713. thinking of

  714. the Athenians

  715. and for so

  716. many in

  717. our day.

  718. And he

  719. starts doing

  720. that with

  721. an observation.

  722. he begins,

  723. he sees this

  724. little crack

  725. in the

  726. door and

  727. he uses

  728. this to

  729. press the

  730. door open

  731. for gospel

  732. presentation.

  733. So Paul

  734. stands in the

  735. midst of the

  736. Areopagus,

  737. in the midst

  738. of this

  739. court that's

  740. convened.

  741. Men of

  742. Athens,

  743. I perceive

  744. that in

  745. every way

  746. you are

  747. very

  748. religious.

  749. You are

  750. philosophers.

  751. for as I

  752. passed along

  753. and observed

  754. the object

  755. of your

  756. worship,

  757. I found

  758. also an

  759. altar with

  760. this

  761. inscription

  762. to the

  763. unknown

  764. God.

  765. And he

  766. sees this

  767. as that

  768. crack and

  769. he flings

  770. it open.

  771. What

  772. therefore you

  773. worship as

  774. unknown,

  775. this I

  776. proclaim to

  777. you.

  778. And he

  779. starts off

  780. into this

  781. gospel

  782. presentation,

  783. which we'll

  784. look at

  785. more in

  786. just a

  787. moment.

  788. But let

  789. me stop

  790. at that

  791. point.

  792. Mankind's

  793. need to

  794. philosophize and

  795. give you some

  796. application here.

  797. We won't

  798. have much

  799. application

  800. later,

  801. so let

  802. me give

  803. this to

  804. you here.

  805. Number

  806. one,

  807. people need

  808. to explain

  809. their

  810. existence.

  811. People need

  812. to explain

  813. their

  814. existence.

  815. You can

  816. get into

  817. many wonderful

  818. conversations

  819. with people

  820. if you

  821. merely ask

  822. them hard

  823. questions about

  824. the nature

  825. of their

  826. existence and

  827. listen to

  828. their answers.

  829. Just ask

  830. people,

  831. why do you

  832. think we're

  833. here?

  834. What happens

  835. after we're

  836. here?

  837. Ask people

  838. questions,

  839. because the

  840. reality of it

  841. is that very

  842. few people

  843. really know.

  844. they'll

  845. philosophize.

  846. They'll

  847. have some

  848. theory.

  849. Talking about

  850. unsaved

  851. people.

  852. They'll

  853. have some

  854. theory of

  855. this, but

  856. they don't

  857. really know.

  858. Be willing to

  859. philosophize with

  860. them.

  861. Be willing to

  862. understand where

  863. they're coming

  864. from and seek

  865. opportunities to

  866. kindly, graciously

  867. punch holes in

  868. their argument.

  869. them.

  870. You'll find it's

  871. not that

  872. difficult to

  873. do.

  874. People stand

  875. on very

  876. shaky ground

  877. as they

  878. theorize about

  879. the world and

  880. its existence.

  881. Paul teaches

  882. us in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  883. chapter 1 that

  884. people are

  885. very, very

  886. aware that

  887. there is a

  888. God who

  889. created the

  890. world, and

  891. all of the

  892. bucking we

  893. see against

  894. recognizing that

  895. is because

  896. people want to

  897. walk in

  898. their sin.

  899. Work with

  900. them to

  901. point this

  902. out and

  903. show them

  904. Christ.

  905. Two, if

  906. the atheist

  907. tries to

  908. tell you

  909. that he

  910. believes that

  911. he is the

  912. result of

  913. billions of

  914. years of

  915. happenstance,

  916. tell him

  917. that he

  918. is the

  919. evidence of

  920. a designer.

  921. Tell the

  922. atheist it

  923. says,

  924. right,

  925. I am

  926. cosmic

  927. stardust

  928. brought

  929. together

  930. across

  931. billions of

  932. years,

  933. say to

  934. that person,

  935. you are

  936. too precious

  937. for me to

  938. believe such

  939. a thing.

  940. I am

  941. looking at

  942. you, and

  943. I am too

  944. amazed by

  945. you to

  946. think that

  947. you are an

  948. accident in

  949. the world.

  950. Tell him

  951. that he is

  952. fearfully and

  953. wonderfully made

  954. by a creator

  955. who loves

  956. him.

  957. Obviously,

  958. I have

  959. characterized all

  960. atheists as

  961. males, but

  962. you get the

  963. point.

  964. And because

  965. he is

  966. fearfully and

  967. wonderfully made,

  968. that is why

  969. you are

  970. concerned about

  971. his world

  972. view.

  973. You can't

  974. possibly believe

  975. that you are

  976. an accident.

  977. Thirdly,

  978. and I hope

  979. obviously, but

  980. it is too

  981. often not,

  982. preach the

  983. gospel of

  984. Jesus Christ.

  985. Note that in

  986. our text so

  987. far, Paul is

  988. in Athens

  989. waiting for

  990. Silas and

  991. Timothy.

  992. This is why

  993. he has gone

  994. to Athens.

  995. He has come

  996. away from

  997. Berea and

  998. the persecution

  999. that was there

  1000. in Macedonia.

  1001. He is out of

  1002. the region of

  1003. Macedonia now.

  1004. And what does

  1005. Paul do to

  1006. pass the time?

  1007. He shares

  1008. the good news

  1009. of our

  1010. resurrected

  1011. Savior with

  1012. anyone who

  1013. would listen.

  1014. And this

  1015. brings us to

  1016. our second

  1017. point.

  1018. Mankind's

  1019. need to know

  1020. who God

  1021. is.

  1022. And I am

  1023. going to

  1024. start speeding

  1025. up.

  1026. In response

  1027. to the

  1028. popular

  1029. philosophies

  1030. of the

  1031. day,

  1032. Paul tells

  1033. the Areopagus

  1034. who God

  1035. is.

  1036. For our

  1037. benefit, let's

  1038. consider what

  1039. Paul said in

  1040. four titles.

  1041. God is the

  1042. creator,

  1043. the king,

  1044. the sustainer,

  1045. and the

  1046. revealer.

  1047. And let's

  1048. work through

  1049. these quickly

  1050. together.

  1051. Number one,

  1052. God is the

  1053. creator.

  1054. He says in

  1055. the first part

  1056. verse 24,

  1057. the God

  1058. who made

  1059. the world

  1060. and everything

  1061. in it.

  1062. He's destroying

  1063. pantheism at

  1064. this point.

  1065. The God,

  1066. singular,

  1067. right?

  1068. The articles

  1069. in the

  1070. Greek,

  1071. the God

  1072. who made

  1073. everything

  1074. in the

  1075. world.

  1076. Genesis

  1077. 1-1,

  1078. in the

  1079. beginning,

  1080. God created

  1081. the heavens

  1082. and the

  1083. earth.

  1084. Goes

  1085. further in

  1086. our

  1087. understanding

  1088. now as

  1089. New Testament

  1090. followers

  1091. of God.

  1092. And we

  1093. have the

  1094. revelation

  1095. of Jesus

  1096. Christ.

  1097. John writes

  1098. in Revelation

  1099. 4-11,

  1100. Worthy

  1101. are you,

  1102. our Lord

  1103. and God,

  1104. to receive

  1105. glory and

  1106. honor and

  1107. power,

  1108. for you

  1109. created all

  1110. things,

  1111. and by

  1112. your will

  1113. they existed

  1114. and were

  1115. created.

  1116. Paul writes

  1117. in Colossians

  1118. 1-16,

  1119. For by

  1120. him,

  1121. being Jesus,

  1122. all things

  1123. were created

  1124. in heaven

  1125. and on

  1126. earth,

  1127. visible and

  1128. invisible,

  1129. whether thrones

  1130. or dominions

  1131. or rulers

  1132. or authorities,

  1133. all things

  1134. were created

  1135. through him

  1136. and for

  1137. him.

  1138. This is

  1139. our God,

  1140. creator of

  1141. heaven and

  1142. earth.

  1143. Secondly,

  1144. God is the

  1145. king.

  1146. The last

  1147. part of

  1148. verse 24,

  1149. being Lord

  1150. of heaven

  1151. and earth.

  1152. He does not

  1153. live in

  1154. temples made

  1155. by man.

  1156. And also,

  1157. verse 26,

  1158. And he

  1159. made from

  1160. one man

  1161. every nation

  1162. of mankind

  1163. to live on

  1164. all the face

  1165. of the earth,

  1166. having determined

  1167. allotted

  1168. periods and

  1169. the boundaries

  1170. of their

  1171. dwelling

  1172. place.

  1173. Psalm 103,

    Psalms 103:19

  1174. verse 19,

  1175. The Lord

  1176. has established

  1177. his throne

  1178. in the heavens

  1179. and his

  1180. kingdom rules

  1181. over all.

  1182. Paul again

  1183. gives this

  1184. application to

  1185. Jesus Christ,

  1186. 1 Timothy 6,

  1187. 15.

  1188. Jesus Christ,

  1189. who is the

  1190. blessed and

  1191. only sovereign,

  1192. the king of

  1193. kings and

  1194. lord of

  1195. lords.

  1196. Rules over

  1197. all things.

  1198. Third,

  1199. God is the

  1200. sustainer.

  1201. He created

  1202. it,

  1203. he rules

  1204. over it,

  1205. and he

  1206. sustains it.

  1207. Verse 25,

  1208. Nor is he

  1209. served by

  1210. human hands

  1211. as though he

  1212. needed anything,

  1213. since he

  1214. himself gives

  1215. to all mankind

  1216. life and

  1217. breath and

  1218. everything.

  1219. The idols

  1220. of the day

  1221. were objects

  1222. and they

  1223. needed things

  1224. brought to

  1225. them for

  1226. their sustenance.

  1227. The worship

  1228. of the day

  1229. was about

  1230. appeasing and

  1231. bringing to

  1232. the idol.

  1233. But God,

  1234. the one true

  1235. God,

  1236. is the

  1237. sustainer of

  1238. all things.

  1239. Psalm 104,

    Psalms 104:14

  1240. verse 14 and

  1241. 15,

  1242. You cause the

  1243. grass to grow

  1244. for the livestock

  1245. and plants

  1246. for man to

  1247. cultivate,

  1248. that he may

  1249. bring forth

  1250. food from

  1251. the earth,

  1252. and wine to

  1253. gladden the

  1254. heart of man,

  1255. oil to make

  1256. his face shine,

  1257. and bread to

  1258. strengthen man's

  1259. heart.

  1260. The writer of

  1261. Hebrews gives

  1262. this application

  1263. to Christ.

  1264. Chapter 1,

  1265. the first part

  1266. of verse 3,

  1267. He's the

  1268. radiance of

  1269. the glory of

  1270. God and the

  1271. exact imprint

  1272. of His nature,

  1273. and He

  1274. upholds the

  1275. universe by

  1276. the word of

  1277. His power.

  1278. God, in

  1279. Christ, made

  1280. all things,

  1281. rules over

  1282. all things,

  1283. sustains all

  1284. things, and

  1285. He is also,

  1286. fourthly, the

  1287. revealer,

  1288. reveals all

  1289. things.

  1290. Verse 27,

  1291. 28, and

  1292. 29, that

  1293. they, all

  1294. these things He's

  1295. done to reveal

  1296. Himself, that

  1297. they should

  1298. seek God, and

  1299. perhaps feel

  1300. their way toward

  1301. Him and find

  1302. Him, that He is

  1303. actually not far

  1304. from each one

  1305. of us.

  1306. And at this

  1307. point, Paul

  1308. quotes from some

  1309. of their very own

  1310. poets and

  1311. literature.

  1312. These would not

  1313. have been a

  1314. people that were

  1315. familiar with the

  1316. Old Testament

  1317. scriptures, and

  1318. so he uses two

  1319. separate ones.

  1320. In Him, we

  1321. live and move

  1322. and have our

  1323. being, and

  1324. for we are

  1325. indeed His

  1326. offspring.

  1327. And he makes

  1328. the point from

  1329. this poet, being

  1330. then God's

  1331. offspring, we

  1332. shouldn't think

  1333. that this divine

  1334. being is like

  1335. gold or silver

  1336. or stone, an

  1337. image formed

  1338. by man.

  1339. So he looks

  1340. back up to

  1341. God being the

  1342. creator of

  1343. the world.

  1344. By the

  1345. natural revelation

  1346. of God in

  1347. nature, previously

  1348. mentioned in

  1349. Romans 1,

    Romans 1:18–20

  1350. verses 18-20,

  1351. and by the

  1352. conscience of

  1353. man, God

  1354. can be known.

  1355. God can be

  1356. known by His

  1357. revelation in

  1358. nature and in

  1359. the consciences

  1360. of men, not

  1361. salvifically, but

  1362. sought after.

  1363. All the

  1364. religions of the

  1365. world are trying

  1366. to find their

  1367. way to God.

  1368. They have

  1369. enough, enough

  1370. information to

  1371. seek after God.

  1372. They need the

  1373. gospel to be

  1374. saved.

  1375. But as

  1376. such, men

  1377. are without

  1378. excuse.

  1379. Romans 2,

    Romans 2:14–15

  1380. verses 14-15.

  1381. For when

  1382. Gentiles, just

  1383. those outside

  1384. of Judaism,

  1385. who do not

  1386. have the

  1387. law, by

  1388. nature do

  1389. what the

  1390. law requires.

  1391. Sharing your

  1392. faith with

  1393. somebody who

  1394. wants to

  1395. have entirely

  1396. relativistic

  1397. moralism,

  1398. ask them

  1399. objective

  1400. questions.

  1401. If morality

  1402. is relative,

  1403. can I kill

  1404. you now?

  1405. And is that

  1406. okay with

  1407. you?

  1408. And the

  1409. right mind

  1410. says no.

  1411. Where does

  1412. that come

  1413. from?

  1414. Where does

  1415. it come

  1416. from?

  1417. That there

  1418. are parameters

  1419. that we

  1420. place upon

  1421. ourselves.

  1422. Paul explains

  1423. it to us

  1424. here.

  1425. It's in our

  1426. nature.

  1427. Right?

  1428. We do what the

  1429. law requires.

  1430. They're a law

  1431. to themselves.

  1432. even though

  1433. they don't

  1434. have the

  1435. law,

  1436. they show

  1437. that the

  1438. work of the

  1439. law is

  1440. written on

  1441. their hearts

  1442. while their

  1443. conscience also

  1444. bears witness

  1445. and their

  1446. conflicting

  1447. thoughts

  1448. accuse or

  1449. even

  1450. excuse them.

  1451. mankind

  1452. cannot stop

  1453. merely at

  1454. knowing who

  1455. God is.

  1456. Certainly

  1457. mankind needs

  1458. to know

  1459. who God

  1460. is.

  1461. We must

  1462. also know

  1463. what God

  1464. has said.

  1465. If God

  1466. is to be

  1467. sought after,

  1468. how is it

  1469. that he

  1470. is found?

  1471. So our

  1472. third point,

  1473. mankind needs

  1474. to know

  1475. what God

  1476. has said.

  1477. Because there

  1478. is a God

  1479. who is the

  1480. creator,

  1481. the king,

  1482. the sustainer,

  1483. and the

  1484. revealer,

  1485. and because

  1486. he has

  1487. spoken,

  1488. we need to

  1489. heed his

  1490. words.

  1491. Paul says

  1492. in the beginning

  1493. of verse 30,

  1494. the times

  1495. of ignorance

  1496. God

  1497. overlooked.

  1498. That is to

  1499. say that in

  1500. times past,

  1501. God did

  1502. not always

  1503. bring particular

  1504. judgment against

  1505. nations that

  1506. did not know

  1507. him.

  1508. He didn't

  1509. always bring

  1510. the specific

  1511. judgment.

  1512. He did at

  1513. times with

  1514. some nations,

  1515. but not

  1516. always.

  1517. He overlooked

  1518. times of

  1519. ignorance,

  1520. although generally

  1521. there is always

  1522. consequence for

  1523. sin.

  1524. That is what

  1525. Paul is

  1526. suggesting here.

  1527. Athenians,

  1528. God has not

  1529. brought a

  1530. special judgment

  1531. down on you

  1532. yet.

  1533. In times

  1534. past,

  1535. he's overlooked

  1536. your ignorance

  1537. ignorance.

  1538. But now,

  1539. verse 30,

  1540. but now,

  1541. he commands

  1542. all people

  1543. everywhere

  1544. to repent.

  1545. All people

  1546. everywhere

  1547. to repent.

  1548. Why?

  1549. Verse 31,

  1550. because he has

  1551. fixed a day

  1552. on which he

  1553. will judge the

  1554. world in

  1555. righteousness

  1556. by a man

  1557. who he

  1558. has appointed.

  1559. God

  1560. Paul is saying

  1561. that a day

  1562. is coming

  1563. soon that

  1564. the world

  1565. will be

  1566. judged

  1567. in comparison

  1568. to a man

  1569. who kept

  1570. the law

  1571. without

  1572. deviation,

  1573. the man

  1574. Jesus Christ.

  1575. The Christ's

  1576. perfection

  1577. and mankind's

  1578. imperfection will

  1579. be held up

  1580. to one

  1581. another.

  1582. We will be

  1583. judged by

  1584. the man

  1585. that God

  1586. has appointed.

  1587. For the

  1588. Athenians and

  1589. for us,

  1590. to stand in the

  1591. day of judgment,

1592. that is to be not

  1593. wiped out,

  1594. to stand in

  1595. the day of

  1596. judgment,

  1597. we must be

  1598. found in

  1599. Christ.

  1600. We must have

  1601. his righteousness

  1602. so that when

  1603. we're held up

  1604. to him,

  1605. we line up.

  1606. We're seen

  1607. as righteous,

  1608. possessing it

  1609. by faith

  1610. in his person

  1611. and his work.

  1612. We must believe

  1613. in who Christ

  1614. is and what

  1615. he has done

  1616. on our behalf

  1617. to be found

  1618. in him.

  1619. Not only will

  1620. we be judged

  1621. in comparison

  1622. to Jesus,

  1623. but God

  1624. has granted

  1625. judgment

  1626. to him.

  1627. will also

  1628. be judged

  1629. by

  1630. Jesus.

  1631. John chapter

    John 5:22–27

  1632. 5,

  1633. verses 22

  1634. through 27.

  1635. For the

  1636. Father judges

  1637. no one,

  1638. but has given

  1639. all judgment

  1640. to the Son,

  1641. that all may

  1642. honor the Son

  1643. just as they

  1644. honor the Father.

  1645. Whoever does

  1646. not honor the

  1647. Son does not

  1648. honor the Father

  1649. who sent him.

  1650. Truly,

  1651. truly,

  1652. I say to you,

  1653. whoever hears

  1654. my words and

  1655. believes him

  1656. who sent me

  1657. has eternal

  1658. life.

  1659. he does not

  1660. come into

  1661. judgment,

  1662. but has passed

  1663. from death

  1664. to life.

  1665. Truly,

  1666. truly,

  1667. I say to you,

  1668. an hour is coming

  1669. and is now here

  1670. when the dead

  1671. will hear the voice

1672. of the Son of God

  1673. and those who hear

  1674. will live.

  1675. For as the Father

  1676. has life in himself,

  1677. so he has granted

  1678. the Son also

  1679. to have life

  1680. in himself,

  1681. and he has given

  1682. him authority

  1683. to execute

  1684. judgment

  1685. judgment

  1686. because he is

  1687. the Son

  1688. of Man.

  1689. And I mentioned

  1690. just kind of

  1691. as an aside

  1692. when I was reading

  1693. a story to the

  1694. children this morning

  1695. in that book,

  1696. Jesus is on a

  1697. horse

  1698. and he says,

  1699. come on,

  1700. friends,

  1701. come in.

  1702. Before that scene

  1703. takes place,

  1704. he's on a horse

  1705. and on his thighs

  1706. are emblazoned

  1707. King of King

  1708. and Lord of Lords

1709. and he has a tongue

  1710. like a sword

  1711. and he comes back

  1712. and he's splattered

  1713. in blood

  1714. because he judges

  1715. the Lord.

  1716. That's a judgment

  1717. I want to escape.

  1718. And the rest of

  1719. verse 31,

  1720. and of this

  1721. he has given

  1722. assurance,

  1723. God has given

  1724. assurance to all

  1725. by raising

  1726. Jesus

  1727. from the dead.

  1728. The good news

  1729. of the gospel

  1730. rises or falls

  1731. on the fact

  1732. of Jesus'

  1733. resurrection.

  1734. many churches

  1735. this morning,

  1736. to their benefit,

  1737. it's a good thing,

  1738. are apologetically

  1739. proving that the

  1740. resurrection actually

  1741. happened.

  1742. That's a good thing.

  1743. It's a good exercise

  1744. for your faith.

  1745. I'm not doing that

  1746. this morning,

  1747. but for your benefit,

  1748. if you're not too

  1749. sure about the

  1750. surety of

  1751. the resurrection,

  1752. spend some time.

  1753. There's lots of

  1754. resources.

  1755. Come to me.

  1756. I'll talk with you

  1757. about it for a

  1758. really long time.

  1759. Because if Jesus

  1760. was not raised,

  1761. then he was a

  1762. moral teacher

  1763. and a lunatic.

  1764. He said crazy

  1765. things if he

  1766. wasn't raised

  1767. from the dead.

  1768. If he wasn't

  1769. after the Son

  1770. of God,

  1771. he claimed to

  1772. be the Son

  1773. of God.

  1774. He claimed to

  1775. be from God.

  1776. He claimed to

  1777. forgive sin.

  1778. He was insane.

  1779. But if he was,

  1780. and he was,

  1781. praise God

  1782. the Son

  1783. that he was,

  1784. then he is all

  1785. that he claimed

  1786. to be.

  1787. Jesus Christ,

  1788. the Son of God,

  1789. who takes away

  1790. the sins of the

  1791. world by his

  1792. perfect life

  1793. and his perfect

  1794. death,

  1795. who is seated

  1796. now at the

  1797. right hand of

  1798. the Father

  1799. interceding

  1800. for us.

  1801. Acts 4.12,

  1802. Peter said,

  1803. and there is

  1804. salvation in

  1805. no one else,

  1806. for there is

  1807. no other name

  1808. under heaven

  1809. given among

  1810. men by which

  1811. we must be

  1812. saved.

  1813. Do you believe

  1814. this?

  1815. There are not

  1816. many ways

  1817. to heaven.

  1818. And there are

  1819. people who are

  1820. out there

  1821. dying,

  1822. thinking,

  1823. just thinking

  1824. they can earn

  1825. their way,

  1826. inventing some

  1827. God of their

  1828. own making,

  1829. some philosophy

  1830. that they hope

  1831. will find them

  1832. one day

  1833. in heaven

  1834. with God.

  1835. those philosophies,

  1836. those aired

  1837. philosophies are

  1838. damning to

  1839. them.

  1840. Who must,

  1841. must,

  1842. must,

  1843. must preach

  1844. the gospel

  1845. of Jesus

  1846. Christ?

  1847. Typically on

  1848. your bulletin,

  1849. I like to give

  1850. you a quotation

  1851. from an old

  1852. dead guy.

  1853. John Piper is

  1854. not,

  1855. at least not

  1856. dead.

  1857. He is old,

  1858. don't murmur,

  1859. it's fine.

  1860. He wouldn't be

  1861. offended by that.

  1862. I just thought

  1863. that this quotation

  1864. fits so well

  1865. here.

  1866. The best news

  1867. of the Christian

  1868. gospel is that

  1869. the supremely

  1870. glorious creator

  1871. of the universe

  1872. has acted in

  1873. Jesus Christ's

  1874. death and

  1875. resurrection

  1876. to remove

  1877. every obstacle

  1878. between us

  1879. and himself

  1880. so that we

  1881. may find

  1882. everlasting joy

  1883. in seeing

  1884. and savoring

  1885. his infinite

  1886. beauty.

  1887. We may have

  1888. that which

  1889. truly satisfies

  1890. the joy

  1891. that can be

  1892. ours.

  1893. What is the

  1894. chief end

  1895. of man?

  1896. To glorify

  1897. God and

  1898. enjoy him

  1899. forever.

  1900. So we've seen

  1901. the last couple

  1902. of verses,

  1903. 32,

  1904. 33,

  1905. and 34,

  1906. the mixed

  1907. responses,

  1908. which is pretty

  1909. typical in the

  1910. ministry of Paul

  1911. and it will be

  1912. in our

  1913. ministry as

  1914. well.

  1915. Some think

  1916. he's crazy,

  1917. they mock

  1918. him.

  1919. Some are

  1920. interested in

  1921. what he had

  1922. to say and

  1923. they want to

  1924. hear again

  1925. what he may

  1926. be teaching

  1927. and some

  1928. believe and

  1929. follow.

  1930. So this

  1931. morning,

  1932. just let me

  1933. ask,

  1934. are you one

  1935. who mocks?

  1936. Is it possible

  1937. that you found

  1938. yourself in

  1939. the meeting

  1940. of Christians

  1941. and you're a

  1942. mocker of the

  1943. resurrection of

  1944. Jesus Christ?

  1945. I saw a

  1946. stat this

  1947. week and I

  1948. didn't do a

  1949. lot of research

  1950. on where it

  1951. came from that

  1952. said that 25%

  1953. of professing

  1954. Christians don't

  1955. believe the

  1956. resurrection actually

  1957. happened.

  1958. They're not

  1959. Christians then.

  1960. They can claim to

  1961. be but they're

  1962. certainly not.

  1963. Do you think

  1964. you're in Christ

  1965. and you don't

  1966. believe he's

  1967. alive?

  1968. I pity you.

  1969. Repent and

  1970. believe.

  1971. Are you one

  1972. who would hear

  1973. more?

  1974. We want to

  1975. share more.

  1976. Boy, do we

  1977. love talking

  1978. about the

  1979. gospel around

  1980. here.

  1981. Just ask.

  1982. Ask anybody.

  1983. Certainly I'm

  1984. available.

  1985. I'd love to

  1986. speak more about

  1987. the gospel of

  1988. Christ with

  1989. you.

  1990. Are you one

  1991. who believes?

  1992. Just believing

  1993. in the resurrection

  1994. is the beginning

  1995. of a life lived

  1996. in service to

  1997. God.

  1998. You note,

  1999. Clay read

  2000. earlier,

  2001. Jesus appears

  2002. amongst the

  2003. disciples.

  2004. What does he

  2005. say?

  2006. Just as the

  2007. father sent

  2008. me, so am

  2009. I sending

  2010. you.

  2011. We're part

  2012. of all of

  2013. the gospel

  2014. implication.

  2015. We're now

  2016. with the

  2017. spirit of

  2018. Christ in

  2019. us,

  2020. displaying his

  2021. mercy to

  2022. the world

  2023. around us.

  2024. So be

  2025. active with

  2026. your family

  2027. and friends

  2028. and coworkers

  2029. and roommates

  2030. displaying the

  2031. glory of the

  2032. gospel.

  2033. Let's pray

  2034. together.
