  6. It is our normal habit and I think the most healthy way of preaching here at Christ of the Church of Dahlonega

  7. for us to do verse by verse exposition.

  8. And I want you to not confuse that with expository preaching generally speaking.

  9. You'll hear many defenses for expository preaching and I would stand with those defenses to be sure.

  10. But what we can tend to do is to think that if we're not doing a verse by verse exposition

  11. that we've abandoned expository preaching altogether.

  12. And preaching that's not expository is not preaching at all.

  13. Expository preaching is simply this.

  14. It works to bring forth for your benefit, glory of God, for your good, what the Bible says.

  15. So it may be concerning a specific text.

  16. Expository preaching can be done with a chapter of the Bible.

  17. It can be done with a book of the Bible.

  18. Expository preaching can also explore a theme of the Bible as well.

  19. So, again, we think verse by verse exposition is the best general habit for us as a church.

  20. But from time to time, we think there's a great deal of value in stopping, considering something together,

  21. a particular topic together and trying to take a look at, not in an exhaustive form,

  22. but what the Bible may have to say about that given topic.

  23. Throughout history, many faithful preachers have held different views on such things.

  24. I'll give you just two quick ones.

  25. Jonathan Edwards was a verse-by-verse expositor, even to a fault.

  26. There was a period of time, this church in New England, he was dismissed from for a couple of years.

  27. And when he came back, he picked up in the verse he left off.

  28. And I think Calvin did the same thing in Geneva when he was kicked out of Geneva for a while.

  29. Came back, and he was in, like, Deuteronomy.

  30. Came back to the very verse that he had left off there.

  31. Charles Spurgeon, who's one of my favorite preachers,

  32. thought that it quenched the Spirit of God to not consider each week

  33. what text the church may have needed exposited for that week.

  34. And so, we try to step in the middle of that.

  35. We try to come into the midst of that, trying to preach verse by verse.

  36. It's good for you to have big, full understandings of books of the Bible,

  37. but also to be sensitive in the midst of the coming and going of our church

  38. and what's happening in the life of our church to, at times, step away from that study.

  39. So, we've been in the book of Acts.

  40. I'm not even sure where we are.

  41. I think we may have finished chapter 17.

  42. We're in chapter 17, or we finished it.

  43. I should remember that from just last week.

  44. But we're going to take some time to talk this morning a bit about music.

  45. Musical worship.

  46. And I want you to know that my intention for doing this

  47. is not to make this church seem better than other churches.

  48. It's not my goal in what we're doing.

  49. It's not to defend the way that we do music together,

  50. but rather to equip you to understand that we don't just have a preference for music,

  51. but that there are theological, there are biblical underpinnings

  52. to the why of the way we do music.

  53. We may carry it out in particular ways that could change,

  54. but there's reason behind what we do.

  55. And I became aware of this.

  56. I mentioned to you a few weeks ago at a community group

  57. that there were some questions asked, and they were good, honest questions.

  58. And I know some of those people are here.

  59. I'm not diminishing you in any way in that conversation,

  60. but I realized that we hadn't taught on this in quite some time.

  61. It had been a long time since we had ever mentioned the why of what we do

  62. when we do music together.

  63. And I began to think about since this church started January 1 of 2009,

  64. so a little over eight years ago.

  65. You're going to get, I think you're going to get a kick out of this.

  66. Since then, right now, there are only six people

  67. that were part of that original beginning.

  68. There are six people.

  69. Myself and my wife, Wes and Liz, you saw on stage, Liz with the mandolin,

  70. and Sid and Ruth, who I don't think are here this morning with us,

  71. but most of you know Sid and Ruth.

  72. Six.

  73. So we have this big turnaround.

  74. And I will say that largely 95% of that is not unhealthy turnaround.

  75. I haven't across the years run people off all the time,

  76. but we live in kind of a transitionary town.

  77. A lot of our congregation across the years has been college students.

  78. One of the wonderful things about that is we've been able to equip

  79. and send out countless people across the years.

  80. And it's a wonderful privilege that we have as a church,

  81. and I think we should pick it up and seize it as such,

  82. to build into people good biblical founding

  83. for the way they should live their lives in the world

  84. and the way they should be involved with

  85. and the way a church should meet together.

  86. So we have the ability to have influence in really broad ways because of that.

  87. So it's important for you to understand then the why.

  88. So you can go find healthy churches,

  89. and you can bring health to churches and communities.

  90. So that's the aim.

  91. That's what we're trying to accomplish this morning as we start,

  92. and we're going to kind of do this across.

  93. I'm going to call it a series, but we're not going to do it in series.

  94. Series in that it'll jump months, but in order.

  95. And we're going to call it this.

  96. You ready?

  97. Why we do what we do,

  98. and why we do what we do the way we do what we do.

  99. So why we do what we do,

  100. and why we do what we do the way we do what we do.

  101. Okay?

  102. And this morning, music.

  103. Right?

  104. This morning, music.

  105. Now, before I get into this,

  106. I want to commend just two resources to you really quickly.

  107. If you want to know more about this,

  108. a wonderful book by a man named Bob Coughlin called Worship Matters.

  109. Really, really great read.

  110. My only complaint about this book,

  111. as he uses a term for music leaders that I don't particularly like,

  112. which I'm going to talk about in just a moment.

  113. He actually makes a case against using such a term,

  114. and then he continues to use the term.

  115. Drove me crazy, Wes.

  116. Drove Wes crazy as well.

  117. Drove me absolutely nuts this week.

  118. Secondly, put out by Grace to You,

  119. which is the ministry John MacArthur is most related to.

  120. Master's Seminary.

  121. Hymns of Grace.

  122. It's a hymnal.

  123. You guys haven't touched one of these in a long time, have you?

  124. We typically are using screens now

  125. because we can introduce new songs more quickly.

  126. If we were to do a hymnal in our church,

  127. this would be the one.

  128. We buy a bunch of copies of this.

  129. It's a wonderful, wonderful hymnal.

  130. It has a bunch of wonderful, rich, true,

  131. well-vetted songs and resources in it.

  132. So if you have an interest in having something like that in your home,

  133. Hymns of Grace would be a really great one for you to pick up.

  134. Okay, so music, specifically music together.

  135. So when we gather together as a church,

  136. why do we engage in musical worship?

  137. And why do we engage in musical worship the way we engage in musical worship?

  138. Why do we do what we do?

  139. And why do we do what we do the way we do what we do?

  140. I practiced that this week.

  141. I want to begin with an aside

  142. concerning our language concerning music in the church.

  143. For far too long,

  144. the music sung in church has been referred to as

  145. quote-unquote worship.

  146. And the individual leading the music as

  147. quote-unquote the worship leader.

  148. Music,

  149. rightly sung in our church gatherings,

  150. or even possibly outside of our church gatherings,

  151. but music rightly sung certainly is worship.

  152. It is.

  153. Music sung together is worship,

  154. but it is not the totality of worship.

  155. And the individual leading music

  156. is certainly leading us in worship,

  157. but not in the totality of worship.

  158. To call our singing together worship,

  159. and the individual leading the music as the worship leader suggests.

  160. This is why this matters.

  161. It suggests

  162. that our worship of God is reduced

  163. to a bit of time

  164. during a service.

  165. So not even the whole service,

  166. but a bit of time during a service on Sunday morning.

  167. And it excludes our prayers together,

  168. and our scripture reading together,

  169. and our preaching together.

  170. This is participatory as well.

  171. I'm speaking,

  172. and I hope you're engaged in listening.

  173. And this,

  174. all that we do together in a worship service

  175. is all worship.

  176. But it even goes beyond that.

  177. It goes outside the doors of here.

  178. We're meant to have lives

  179. that are given to worship.

  180. Paul stated in Romans 12, verse 1.

    Romans 12:1

  181. He says,

  182. I appeal to you, therefore,

  183. based on the first 11 chapters,

  184. his great treatise on the Christian faith.

  185. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers,

  186. by the mercies of God,

  187. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  188. holy and acceptable to God,

  189. which is your spiritual worship.

  190. And the English word,

  191. translated from the Greek here, body,

  192. it's a good word to be translated.

  193. I wouldn't pick on any of our Bible translators

  194. in this case,

  195. but it has a grander meaning

  196. in the original language.

  197. I like the word being.

  198. God means for all of our lives

  199. to be committed to his praise.

  200. Everything that we do,

  201. it's all worship.

  202. So I have a real problem

  203. with this over-reduction of the idea.

  204. So it's musical worship.

  205. It is worship.

  206. But it's a part.

  207. It's part of our worship,

  208. both together and as individuals

  209. in the world.

  210. So we will never call the music here,

  211. quote-unquote, worship,

  212. or the individual leading the music,

  213. the, quote-unquote, worship leader,

  214. because it is confusing.

  215. Now some will say,

  216. and I've done this,

  217. brought a little correction.

  218. What are you talking about?

  219. Some will say,

  220. well, you know what I mean

  221. when being corrected.

  222. But the problem, beloved,

  223. is that words have meaning.

  224. And you don't just get to

  225. willy-nilly change the meaning of words.

  226. You can't be so cavalier

  227. with your use of words,

  228. because my response will be,

  229. no, I do not know what you mean.

  230. And as the children learned this morning,

  231. the heart is where the words of the mouth grow.

  232. So we need to be careful about

  233. the words that we use

  234. and what we're communicating

  235. when we use those words.

  236. This is why we will speak in terms

  237. of musical worship

  238. and why we call Wes our

  239. Pastor for Worship Arts.

  240. It's not a bad title.

  241. I think he came up with it.

  242. It's good.

  243. I like it.

  244. Now the subject of musical worship

  245. in churches has been

  246. a highly contested one

  247. in my lifetime.

  248. For many of you,

  249. this may be true.

  250. Some have called it

  251. the worship wars,

  252. where churches began

  253. to try to pick up new ideas

  254. of the way that we worship God

  255. in music.

  256. And some wanted to stay

  257. very entrenched in the ways

  258. they like to engage

  259. in worshiping God in music.

  260. And these worship wars

  261. have had much heat

  262. with little to no light.

  263. Meaning they were very much

  264. fueled by preference

  265. and fueled very little

  266. by the Bible.

  267. The current solution

  268. seems to be

  269. for small churches

  270. to work to serve

  271. a particular demographic.

  272. So church planters

  273. will actually look

  274. at demographic studies

  275. and they'll figure out

  276. the general population

  277. of an area

  278. and they'll figure out

  279. the favorite style of music

  280. for that population

  281. in an area

  282. and they'll try to find

  283. somebody who can

  284. meet that need,

  285. who can present that style.

  286. And they'll say to anybody else

  287. who doesn't like the style,

  288. sorry,

  289. we only do one style here.

  290. For the large church,

  291. the solution seems to be

  292. to cater to every demographic

  293. with multiple services.

  294. You see,

  295. most large churches

  296. will have multiple services

  297. and they will contain within them

  298. multiple styles of music.

  299. So you've got your

  300. contemporary service

  301. and you've got your

  302. traditional service

  303. and you've got your

  304. blended service.

  305. And sometimes these

  306. even happen at the same time

  307. on the same campus,

  308. just in different locations.

  309. Beloved,

  310. none of this

  311. is good

  312. for your faith

  313. or for the community

  314. of faith.

  315. It is not proper

  316. for a church

  317. to serve preference

  318. over purpose

  319. in the way that we gather.

  320. It is not healthy

  321. for the church

  322. to meet felt needs

  323. over real needs

  324. at the expense

  325. of real needs.

  326. To promulgate

  327. consumerism

  328. in the worship

  329. of our God.

  330. So,

  331. Wes and I,

  332. in the very early days

  333. of Christ Family Church,

  334. we were a musician

  335. becoming a pastor

  336. and a teacher

  337. becoming a pastor

  338. and by God's grace,

  339. hear me say that,

  340. Wes and I

  341. are not better

  342. than anyone else.

  343. By God's grace,

  344. we picked up,

  345. and I wish I could

  346. trace the contours

  347. of how we

  348. so came to love

  349. the doctrine of Scripture

  350. called the sufficiency

  351. of Scripture.

  352. But we came to love it

  353. and we came to see

  354. that if we were to

  355. lead a church well,

  356. we must do it

  357. by the Word of God.

  358. We must do it

  359. by His instruction.

  360. And then if it's sufficient,

  361. then it contains

  362. within it

  363. all the instruction

  364. that we need.

  365. And then by grace,

  366. we picked it up

  367. and we began asking

  368. questions

  369. and finding answers

  370. from God's

  371. own Word.

  372. We picked up a principle

  373. that was employed

  374. by the Reformers

  375. and the Puritans

  376. called the regulative

  377. principle of worship.

  378. And that was

  379. if we couldn't find

  380. prescribed in the Scripture

  381. worship of God

  382. in a particular way,

  383. then we wouldn't do it.

  384. And we would just

  385. simply do

  386. the thing

  387. that God

  388. prescribed for us

  389. to do.

  390. And we have,

  391. over the past

  392. eight years,

  393. put that in place.

  394. It has been

  395. our prayer

  396. that we would be

  397. faithful to the Bible.

  398. Not just Wes and I.

  399. We have had other elders

  400. in the life of our church

  401. as well.

  402. We have pressed at this.

  403. Let's do

  404. the worship of God

  405. in God's way

  406. and let's trust

  407. that He'll build a church

  408. and He'll reach

  409. our community

  410. as a result.

  411. So that's where we're at.

  412. That's why I want to

  413. loop you back in, right?

  414. Some of you are new here,

  415. so I want you to understand

  416. what we've learned

  417. and why we practice

  418. music the way

  419. that we do.

  420. So let's begin our study

  421. with Colossians 3.16.

  422. Colossians 3.16.

  423. Beloved,

  424. this is God's Word

  425. to us.

  426. It was written

  427. for His glory

  428. and for our good

  429. and we would all do well

  430. to listen to it

  431. this morning

  432. in order to believe

  433. its promises

  434. and obey

  435. its commands.

  436. Paul writes,

  437. verse 16,

  438. Colossians 3,

  439. let the Word of Christ

  440. dwell in you richly,

  441. teaching

  442. and admonishing

  443. one another

  444. in all wisdom,

  445. singing psalms

  446. and hymns

  447. and spiritual songs

  448. with thankfulness

  449. in your hearts

  450. to God.

  451. Now turn to

  452. Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  453. verses 18 and 19,

  454. Paul writes,

  455. and do not get drunk

  456. with wine

  457. for that is debauchery,

  458. but be filled

  459. with the Spirit,

  460. addressing one another

  461. in psalms

  462. and hymns

  463. and spiritual songs,

  464. singing and making

  465. melody to the Lord

  466. with your heart.

  467. So why

  468. do we do

  469. what we do?

  470. Why do we sing

  471. together

  472. when we gather?

  473. Well,

  474. it's because the Bible

  475. commands it

  476. for God's glory

  477. and for our good.

  478. You can see two places

  479. that I've read to you

  480. just already this morning.

  481. Colossians 3,

  482. 16,

  483. Ephesians 5,

  484. 18 and 19.

  485. There's instruction

  486. here for the singing

  487. together.

  488. Psalm 33,

  489. 3 says,

  490. Sing to Him

  491. a new song.

  492. Place skillfully

  493. on the strings.

  494. I like this,

  495. with loud shouts.

  496. Psalm 47,

  497. 6,

  498. Sing praises

  499. to God.

  500. Sing praises.

  501. Sing praises

  502. to our King.

  503. Sing praises.

  504. The Bible contains

  505. over 400

  506. references

  507. to singing

  508. and 50

  509. direct commands

  510. to sing.

  511. In fact,

  512. the longest book

  513. of the Bible

  514. by verse count,

  515. at least,

  516. I know that you want

  517. to contend with me

  518. on that maybe,

  519. by verse count,

  520. the longest book

  521. of the Bible

  522. is the Psalms,

  523. which is a book

  524. of songs,

  525. every single

  526. one of them.

  527. Further,

  528. we have

  529. the example

  530. of Jesus

  531. in Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:30

  532. verse 30,

  533. with the apostles,

  534. and when they had

  535. sung a hymn,

  536. they went out

  537. to the Mount of Olives.

  538. We have the example

  539. of heaven

  540. in the book

  541. of Revelation

  542. many,

  543. many times.

  544. You know what book

  545. has more songs

  546. in it than any other book

  547. except the book

  548. of Psalms?

  549. The book of Revelation,

  550. right?

  551. This vision that John

  552. has of heaven.

  553. Lots of singing

  554. in heaven.

  555. One example,

  556. Revelation 15,

    Revelation 15:2

  557. verses 2 and 3.

  558. And I saw what appeared

  559. to be a sea of glass

  560. mingled with fire,

  561. and also those

  562. who had conquered

  563. the beast

  564. and its image

  565. and the number

  566. of its name

  567. standing beside

  568. the sea of glass

  569. with harps of God

  570. in their hands.

  571. And they sing

  572. the song of Moses,

  573. the servant of God,

  574. and the song

  575. of the Lamb,

  576. saying,

  577. Great and amazing

  578. are your deeds,

  579. O Lord God,

  580. the Almighty,

  581. just and true

  582. are your ways,

  583. O King of the nations.

  584. And we have the example

  585. of Paul and Silas

  586. in the Philippian jail.

  587. Not long ago,

  588. we studied this together

  589. on the Lord's Day.

  590. Acts 16,

    Acts 16:25

  591. verse 25.

  592. About midnight,

  593. Paul and Silas

  594. were praying,

  595. remember they're

  596. in the Philippian jail,

  597. and singing hymns

  598. to God.

  599. James says in James 5.13,

  600. Is anyone cheerful?

  601. Let him sing praise.

  602. The Bible is full

  603. of this type of instruction.

  604. John Calvin once wrote,

  605. I think many people

  606. are sold a very staunch view

  607. of Calvin,

  608. but he said wonderful things

  609. like this.

  610. wherever faith is lively,

  611. holy rejoicing

  612. will follow.

  613. So,

  614. we should sing

  615. when we are gathered.

  616. We should.

  617. We're instructed to do so.

  618. We should sing

  619. when we are gathered.

  620. And we're told,

  621. both in Ephesians 5

  622. and Colossians 3,

  623. to sing psalms

  624. and hymns

  625. and spiritual songs.

  626. Now,

  627. there is no need

  628. in overcomplicating

  629. what these three things are.

  630. We don't need to set these

  631. on a scale

  632. and make sure we're doing

  633. 33 and a third percent

  634. of each

  635. of the following things.

  636. But there were types

  637. of music,

  638. and Paul's referencing

  639. those specific types,

  640. and I think it's valuable

  641. for us to pull those up

  642. and use those types

  643. as well here.

  644. So,

  645. Psalms are pretty obvious

  646. what the Psalms were.

  647. Those are the songs

  648. of the Bible,

  649. and we should sing

  650. from God's song book.

  651. We find some challenge

  652. with that, though,

  653. in the 21st century

  654. English-speaking culture

  655. in which we live

  656. because those songs

  657. were written in Hebrew

  658. and they rhymed most often,

  659. but they rhymed in Hebrew

  660. and they don't tend

  661. to rhyme in English,

  662. so it becomes difficult,

  663. right,

  664. to sing a song as such.

  665. But lots of our songs

  666. reference the Psalms

  667. and pull text

  668. from the Psalms.

  669. And Wes does a good job,

  670. and I think he works hard

  671. at trying to sing

  672. Psalms to you,

  673. particularly during

  674. the offering

  675. or the Lord's Supper

  676. when you're not expected

  677. to sing with necessarily

  678. because they're often

  679. difficult to sing.

  680. They can be hard songs

  681. to sing as they don't rhyme

  682. and you're trying

  683. to make the near rhymes

  684. work out,

  685. etc.

  686. But we should want

  687. to sing such songs

  688. and be Scripture-rich

  689. in our singing.

  690. Just before I came up

  691. to preach during

  692. the offering time,

  693. Wes mentioned

  694. understanding what

  695. we are about to do

  696. from the rising of the sun

  697. is based on Psalm 113.

  698. We're also instructed

  699. to sing hymns,

  700. and there's all kinds

  701. of talk of hymology,

  702. like what makes a hymn,

  703. but most simply,

  704. a hymn is a song

  705. to or about God

  706. and what He has done.

  707. To or about God

  708. and what He has done.

  709. Two examples

  710. that would be,

  711. I think, well known.

  712. How Great Thou Art

  713. and Holy, Holy, Holy,

  714. which we sang

  715. just a few moments ago

  716. would be considered hymns.

  717. Just because it's in a hymnal

  718. doesn't necessarily

  719. make it a hymn.

  720. We're also instructed

  721. to sing spiritual songs,

  722. and these are most

  723. often understood

  724. to be kind of

  725. reflexive of hymns.

  726. So, spiritual songs

  727. are songs

  728. to or about us,

  729. but I'd add

  730. that there are songs

  731. to or about us

  732. in relation to

  733. who God is

  734. and what He has done.

  735. So, what is the effect

  736. of God's work

  737. in the world?

  738. And we sing a lot of songs

  739. that would be categorized

  740. as spiritual songs.

  741. Songs like

  742. Amazing Grace

  743. and it is well.

  744. Let's speak of the

  745. human experience

  746. of God's goodness

  747. and grace

  748. and mercy

  749. to mankind.

  750. So, we should sing together.

  751. Why should we sing together?

  752. The Bible instructs it,

  753. but why does the Bible

  754. instruct it?

  755. For God's glory,

  756. for our good,

  757. humans are wired

  758. to give

  759. and receive

  760. through song.

  761. And this is still

  762. a bit of a mystery to me.

  763. I want to spend more time

  764. considering

  765. why that is.

  766. And it may not be

  767. a thing that I can answer,

  768. but we are wired

  769. to love music.

  770. Musicians have been

  771. wildly popular

  772. for good and for bad

  773. throughout history.

  774. Every movement,

  775. every uprising,

  776. every cultural expression

  777. has its music.

  778. Consider that.

  779. It's true.

  780. There's always a rally cry

  781. that's driven by music.

  782. We seem to be

  783. musical beings.

  784. Some people will say

  785. that they don't like music,

  786. but they do.

  787. They do.

  788. You could find the thing

  789. that would cause them

  790. to tap their foot

  791. or to bob their head.

  792. There's something

  793. that will do that.

  794. For a person.

  795. So,

  796. when we sing,

  797. when we are gathered,

  798. it is our hope

  799. that our feelings

  800. catch up

  801. to the truth

  802. we believe.

  803. Right?

  804. And we should

  805. feel the truth.

  806. Right?

  807. Feelings don't define truth,

  808. but we want to feel

  809. the truth,

  810. and music helps us

  811. to do that.

  812. I have to tell you

  813. that I know

  814. that as a group of people

  815. we're typically drawn

  816. to similar things,

  817. and I know that

  818. that's often

  819. an adherence to the Bible,

  820. maybe even a staunchness

  821. in our teaching

  822. of the Bible,

  823. but I wish you guys

  824. would be more expressive

  825. sometimes.

  826. It's okay to move

  827. the music.

  828. Guys,

  829. don't stand in the back

  830. of the room

  831. with your arms folded.

  832. Consider the words.

  833. Right?

  834. Consider the words

  835. and have it move you

  836. to praise.

  837. Jonathan Edwards wrote

  838. in Religious Affections,

  839. the duty of singing praises

  840. to God

  841. seems to be appointed

  842. wholly

  843. to excite

  844. and express

  845. religious affections.

  846. No other reason

  847. can be assigned

  848. why we should

  849. express ourselves

  850. to God

  851. in verse

  852. and to do it

  853. with music

  854. but only

  855. that such

  856. is our nature

  857. and frame.

  858. He's saying

  859. we were made for that.

  860. Right?

  861. Such is our nature

  862. and frame

  863. that these things

  864. have a tendency

  865. to move

  866. our affections.

  867. And so that's

  868. why we sing

  869. together.

  870. That's why

  871. it's important

  872. that we sing together

  873. when we're gathered.

  874. I was challenged

  875. this week by Wes

  876. that maybe

  877. my community group,

  878. we don't sing

  879. at my community group,

  880. maybe we should.

  881. I don't know

  882. if we have any musical talent

  883. in our community group.

  884. It doesn't matter.

  885. It doesn't matter.

  886. As long as I don't

  887. have to lead it.

  888. So that's why

  889. we do what we do.

  890. But why do we do

  891. what we do

  892. the way we do

  893. what we do?

  894. You may have noticed

  895. that our church

  896. does music

  897. a little different

  898. than many churches.

  899. Not all,

  900. but many churches

  901. of our day.

  902. Colossians 3.16

  903. and Ephesians 5.18

  904. and 19

  905. show us

  906. that our singing

  907. together

  908. is the result

  909. of the outflow

  910. of being filled

  911. with the Spirit

  912. and letting

  913. the Word of Christ

  914. dwell in you richly.

  915. If you diagram

  916. the Greek language out,

  917. right,

  918. this instruction

  919. by Paul

  920. to not be

  921. drunk with wine,

  922. that's debauchery,

  923. but rather be

  924. filled with the Spirit

  925. and his instruction

  926. to let the Word of Christ

  927. dwell in you richly

  928. has things

  929. that define

  930. what that looks like

  931. beyond it.

  932. And there's lists

  933. and there's a lot

  934. of parallel

  935. between those texts.

  936. That parallel

  937. is incredibly

  938. striking

  939. between much

  940. of Colossians 3

  941. and Ephesians 5.

  942. They both have

  943. Paul as their author

  944. which allows

  945. for an incredible

  946. connection

  947. to be drawn

  948. from them.

  949. If you've been here

  950. with us

  951. in our study

  952. of Acts,

  953. I've made this

  954. connection for you

  955. as we've been

  956. looking at

  957. what it means

  958. to be filled

  959. with the Spirit.

  960. You see

  961. this connection

  962. between the two

  963. being filled

  964. with the Spirit

  965. and letting

  966. the Word of Christ

  967. dwell in you richly.

  968. He's using

  969. these phrases

  970. interchangeably.

  971. Study the text.

  972. You've got all

  973. of these things

  974. that are the same

  975. but these two phrases

  976. he swaps out

  977. in these cases.

  978. So,

  979. we're being filled

  980. with the Spirit.

  981. We're letting

  982. the Word of Christ

  983. dwell in us richly.

  984. And I'm going to

  985. wrap back to

  986. what it means

  987. to be filled

  988. with the Spirit

  989. but let's talk

  990. for a moment

  991. about letting

  992. the Word of Christ

  993. dwell in you richly.

  994. The word

  995. dwell in the

  996. original language

  997. means to

  998. take up residence,

  999. to inhabit.

  1000. So,

  1001. the Word of Christ,

  1002. the Scripture

  1003. is meant to

  1004. inhabit us

  1005. richly

  1006. in abundance.

  1007. Let the Word

  1008. of Christ

  1009. fill you.

  1010. Change your

  1011. very being

  1012. from the inside

  1013. out.

  1014. And to do that,

  1015. we're to

  1016. read

  1017. and we're to

  1018. meditate

  1019. on the Scripture

  1020. and we're to

  1021. memorize

  1022. the Scripture

  1023. and we're to

  1024. speak the Scripture

  1025. to one another

  1026. and we're to

  1027. preach and

  1028. listen to

  1029. preaching

  1030. and we're to

  1031. sing songs

  1032. to one another.

  1033. So, you can see

  1034. that letting

  1035. the Word of Christ

  1036. dwell in you richly

  1037. looks like

  1038. picking it up,

  1039. taking it up

  1040. within us,

  1041. having it fill us

  1042. to overflowing.

  1043. It creates

  1044. activity,

  1045. obedience in us

  1046. is the same

  1047. as being

  1048. filled

  1049. with the Spirit.

  1050. In case this

  1051. connection between

  1052. Colossians and

  1053. Ephesians is too

  1054. vague for you,

  1055. we bring you to

  1056. another text,

  1057. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8:5

  1058. verse 5.

  1059. Paul writes

  1060. there,

  1061. those who live

  1062. according to

  1063. the flesh

  1064. set their

  1065. minds

  1066. on the

  1067. things

  1068. of the

  1069. flesh.

  1070. But those

  1071. who live

  1072. according to

  1073. the Spirit,

  1074. who are

  1075. filled with

  1076. the Spirit,

  1077. set their

  1078. minds

  1079. on the

  1080. things

  1081. of the

  1082. Spirit.

  1083. What are

  1084. the things

  1085. of the

  1086. Spirit

  1087. but the

  1088. book He

  1089. inspired?

  1090. The book,

  1091. the way in

  1092. which He

  1093. works out

  1094. and the

  1095. tool that He

  1096. uses to

  1097. work in

  1098. to us.

  1099. Paul wrote

  1100. in Galatians

    Galatians 5:16

  1101. chapter 5

  1102. verse 16,

  1103. walk by

  1104. the Spirit

  1105. and you

  1106. will not

  1107. gratify

  1108. the desires

  1109. of the

  1110. flesh.

  1111. So having

  1112. the Word

  1113. of God

  1114. dwell in

  1115. us richly

  1116. is to be

  1117. filled with

  1118. the Spirit

  1119. and produces

  1120. in us

  1121. good and

  1122. proper

  1123. praise.

  1124. Proper

  1125. worship of

  1126. God is

  1127. Spirit-filled

  1128. worship of

  1129. God,

  1130. which is

  1131. mindful

  1132. worship

  1133. of God.

  1134. Our

  1135. singing

  1136. together

  1137. must be

  1138. head

  1139. and heart.

  1140. Too much

  1141. singing in

  1142. church these

  1143. days

  1144. divorces

  1145. thinking from

  1146. it

  1147. all together.

  1148. And we're

  1149. to do this,

  1150. right?

  1151. We're to be

  1152. teaching and

  1153. admonishing

  1154. one another

  1155. in all

  1156. wisdom,

  1157. addressing

  1158. one another.

  1159. And I don't

  1160. think the

  1161. teaching and

  1162. admonishing one

  1163. another in

  1164. Colossians 3.16

  1165. doesn't also

  1166. include

  1167. speaking to

  1168. one another.

  1169. But it

  1170. certainly

  1171. includes

  1172. singing

  1173. psalms and

  1174. hymns and

  1175. spiritual songs.

  1176. I think that's

  1177. more clear for

  1178. us in

  1179. Ephesians 5.19.

  1180. We're meant to be

  1181. addressing one

  1182. another.

  1183. That's the way

  1184. in which he's

  1185. suggesting that

  1186. we teach

  1187. and admonish.

  1188. And teaching

  1189. and admonishing,

  1190. teaching is the

  1191. positive way in

  1192. which we should

  1193. walk and

  1194. admonishing is

  1195. the correction,

  1196. is the warning

  1197. away from

  1198. walking in

  1199. the wrong

  1200. way.

  1201. John Owen

  1202. once said,

  1203. a Puritan

  1204. pastor,

  1205. it's on your

  1206. bulletin,

  1207. we must not

  1208. allow ourselves

  1209. to be satisfied

  1210. with vague

  1211. ideas of the

  1212. love of Christ

  1213. which present

  1214. nothing of

  1215. his glory

  1216. to our

  1217. minds.

  1218. I find

  1219. that songs

  1220. are improving,

  1221. like pop

  1222. Christian songs

  1223. are getting a

  1224. little better,

  1225. not much,

  1226. but a little

  1227. better.

  1228. But in my

  1229. teen years

  1230. into early

  1231. college years,

  1232. so many

  1233. of the new

  1234. songs,

  1235. you could have

  1236. replaced

  1237. Jesus with

  1238. your girlfriend's

  1239. name and it

  1240. would have

  1241. still made

  1242. sense.

  1243. vague ideas

  1244. of the love

  1245. of Christ

  1246. which present

  1247. nothing of

  1248. his glory

  1249. to our

  1250. minds.

  1251. Christ,

  1252. prophet,

  1253. priest,

  1254. king.

  1255. Paul writes

  1256. in 1 Corinthians

  1257. 14-15,

  1258. I will sing

  1259. praise with

  1260. my spirit,

  1261. but I will

  1262. sing with

  1263. my mind

  1264. also.

  1265. John 4-23,

  1266. Jesus said,

  1267. but the hour

  1268. is coming

  1269. and is now

  1270. here when

  1271. true worshipers

  1272. will worship

  1273. the Father

  1274. in spirit

  1275. and truth.

  1276. For the

  1277. Father is

  1278. seeking such

  1279. people to

  1280. worship him.

  1281. Jesus does

  1282. not say in

  1283. spirit and

  1284. emotional

  1285. expression.

  1286. Truth must

  1287. be central

  1288. to our

  1289. worship of

  1290. our God.

  1291. So,

  1292. we,

  1293. and really,

  1294. maybe we

  1295. a bunch of

  1296. years ago,

  1297. but we

  1298. now,

  1299. I really

  1300. mean Wes,

  1301. as he

  1302. handles music

  1303. for our

  1304. church so

  1305. well,

  1306. use three

  1307. parameters in

  1308. considering new

  1309. music.

  1310. So,

  1311. Wes uses

  1312. three parameters

  1313. in considering

  1314. new music,

  1315. which I

  1316. appreciate.

  1317. And they

  1318. are truth,

  1319. depth,

  1320. and singability.

  1321. The truth,

  1322. is the song

  1323. true?

  1324. And when I

  1325. say new

  1326. songs,

  1327. I don't

  1328. just mean

  1329. newly produced

  1330. songs,

  1331. I mean new

  1332. songs for

  1333. our congregation.

  1334. So,

  1335. maybe a

  1336. very,

  1337. very old

  1338. song,

  1339. but that

  1340. may be

  1341. new to

  1342. us.

  1343. These are

  1344. all getting

  1345. run through

  1346. these filters.

  1347. Is the

  1348. song true?

  1349. Is it

  1350. biblically

  1351. true,

  1352. objectively

  1353. true?

  1354. Does it

  1355. contain within

  1356. it any

  1357. error?

  1358. Or,

  1359. and or,

  1360. is it as

  1361. precise as

  1362. it should be?

  1363. Does it

  1364. properly present

  1365. doctrine to

  1366. us so that

  1367. as we sing

  1368. we can pick

  1369. those things

  1370. up and we

  1371. can have

  1372. them for

  1373. ourselves and

  1374. have it

  1375. shape us?

  1376. I'll give you

  1377. an example of

  1378. some lyrical

  1379. changes that

  1380. Wes made.

  1381. Some of you,

  1382. especially new

  1383. to us,

  1384. may have

  1385. experienced the

  1386. awkwardness of

  1387. singing the

  1388. song as it

  1389. was written

  1390. and being

  1391. totally thrown

  1392. off because we

  1393. sang it

  1394. differently,

  1395. How Deep

  1396. the Father's

  1397. Love for

  1398. Us,

  1399. which is a

  1400. wonderful song,

  1401. a spiritual

  1402. song we would

  1403. suggest here.

  1404. We sing,

  1405. it was his

  1406. love that

  1407. held him

  1408. there,

  1409. speaking of

  1410. Christ on

  1411. the cross,

  1412. but it was

  1413. written,

  1414. it was my

  1415. sin that

  1416. held him

  1417. there.

  1418. And I

  1419. wouldn't,

  1420. you know,

  1421. contend,

  1422. and I don't

  1423. think Wes

  1424. would either,

  1425. with the

  1426. author of

  1427. the song,

  1428. I think the

  1429. general idea

  1430. of what he

  1431. was trying to

  1432. communicate there

  1433. is proper,

  1434. right?

  1435. He was

  1436. suffering for

  1437. our sin,

  1438. that's the

  1439. suggestion of

  1440. that line.

  1441. But it also

  1442. seems to go a

  1443. little further

  1444. to maybe make

  1445. someone believe

  1446. that we had

  1447. in our

  1448. sinfulness the

  1449. power to put

  1450. Christ on the

  1451. cross,

  1452. that our sin

  1453. actually placed

  1454. him there and

  1455. held him there

  1456. and that he

  1457. wasn't powerful

  1458. over it.

  1459. And so I

  1460. think changing

  1461. it to it was

  1462. his love that

  1463. held him here

  1464. is a more

  1465. precise way to

  1466. think about what

  1467. Jesus was doing

  1468. for us on the

  1469. cross.

  1470. In John 10,

  1471. 18,

  1472. Jesus says,

  1473. no one takes

  1474. my life for

  1475. me,

  1476. but I lay it

  1477. down of my

  1478. own accord.

  1479. And so those

  1480. types of things

  1481. are being

  1482. considered the

  1483. truthfulness of

  1484. a song.

  1485. And I will

  1486. suggest to you

  1487. even to the

  1488. degree that

  1489. sometimes I'll

  1490. misunderstand what

  1491. a song is

  1492. saying.

  1493. And I'll ask

  1494. Wes,

  1495. like,

  1496. hey,

  1497. I'm not sure

  1498. about because,

  1499. and he'll

  1500. explain to me

  1501. exactly what it

  1502. means.

  1503. No,

  1504. that's not

  1505. what he's

  1506. saying.

  1507. If you pay

  1508. attention to,

  1509. I'll go,

  1510. oh,

  1511. yeah,

  1512. yeah.

  1513. Sometimes I

  1514. check out

  1515. there.

  1516. You're right.

  1517. It's a very

  1518. good and true

  1519. song.

  1520. So truth is

  1521. one of the

  1522. filters that we

  1523. run through.

  1524. Secondly,

  1525. depth.

  1526. Right?

  1527. Depth.

  1528. Does a song

  1529. merely skip a

  1530. stone off the

  1531. surface of the

  1532. truth,

  1533. or does it

  1534. sink deep

  1535. into it?

  1536. Does a song

  1537. teach us

  1538. something about

  1539. God and

  1540. his work,

  1541. or is a

  1542. song content

  1543. rich?

  1544. We only have

  1545. so much time

  1546. together,

  1547. but you only

  1548. have so much

  1549. capacity in your

  1550. brain to hang

  1551. on to

  1552. information.

  1553. So what do

  1554. we do with

  1555. the time that

  1556. we're together?

  1557. Our song

  1558. should be

  1559. deep,

  1560. which means

  1561. most often

  1562. that our

  1563. songs are

  1564. wordy.

  1565. So you

  1566. have a

  1567. friend who

  1568. asks you,

  1569. why so

  1570. many words

  1571. in your

  1572. song?

  1573. I feel

  1574. like I

  1575. worship God

  1576. better with

  1577. less words.

  1578. Because you

  1579. need truth.

  1580. Right?

  1581. Because we

  1582. want to meet

  1583. real need,

  1584. not felt

  1585. need.

  1586. We don't

  1587. want you

  1588. zoning out.

  1589. We want you

  1590. paying attention.

  1591. We put it on

  1592. the screen.

  1593. You'll note

  1594. that we don't

  1595. put a line

  1596. at a time

  1597. on the screen.

  1598. And that's

  1599. in part for

  1600. the sanity

  1601. of the person

  1602. sitting in the

  1603. back to try

  1604. to keep up.

  1605. It's in part

  1606. because we

  1607. don't have

  1608. close-up of

  1609. Wes's hands

  1610. playing the

  1611. guitar with

  1612. the person

  1613. in all black

  1614. clothes running

  1615. around him

  1616. with the

  1617. camera.

  1618. But it's

  1619. primarily

  1620. because we

  1621. want you to

  1622. look at the

  1623. words,

  1624. to see them,

  1625. to see the

  1626. verse.

  1627. And we put as

  1628. much as we

  1629. can up there,

  1630. the verse

  1631. so you can

  1632. actually go,

  1633. oh,

  1634. what does that

  1635. word mean?

  1636. That's an

  1637. old word,

  1638. I think.

  1639. What does it

  1640. mean?

  1641. Write it down.

  1642. Look it up.

  1643. Be informed

  1644. by this music.

  1645. Our songs

  1646. should have

  1647. depth.

  1648. We get,

  1649. Wes,

  1650. five songs.

  1651. Seven if you

  1652. include those

  1653. that people

  1654. don't participate

  1655. in.

  1656. Wes's ministry

  1657. here at our

  1658. church is the

  1659. same as my

  1660. ministry.

  1661. He just uses

  1662. a different

  1663. vehicle to

  1664. deliver it.

  1665. It's ministry

  1666. of the word.

  1667. We're united

  1668. in what we

  1669. do.

  1670. Wes's job

  1671. isn't to

  1672. make you

  1673. feel,

  1674. my job

  1675. to make

  1676. you think.

  1677. I'm going

  1678. to minister

  1679. the word

  1680. of God

  1681. to you.

  1682. And then

  1683. thirdly,

  1684. singability.

  1685. Is a

  1686. song

  1687. congregational?

  1688. Is a

  1689. song

  1690. congregational?

  1691. I love

  1692. concerts.

  1693. I really

  1694. appreciate

  1695. going to

  1696. concerts,

  1697. especially

  1698. skilled

  1699. musicians,

  1700. watching them

  1701. perform the

  1702. music that

  1703. you can hear

  1704. on the

  1705. album is

  1706. an

  1707. incredible

  1708. thing to

  1709. do.

  1710. I love

  1711. a good

  1712. rock show.

  1713. Like,

  1714. make me

  1715. not be

  1716. able to

  1717. hear things

  1718. afterwards.

  1719. I love

  1720. that kind

  1721. of big

  1722. production,

  1723. big experience,

  1724. blinding with

  1725. lights,

  1726. throw smoke,

  1727. where'd that

  1728. guy come

  1729. from?

  1730. I don't

  1731. know.

  1732. He's on

  1733. top of

  1734. the

  1735. speaker stack.

  1736. that's

  1737. not what

  1738. we're

  1739. called to

  1740. do.

  1741. We

  1742. sing

  1743. congregationally

  1744. so we

  1745. have light.

  1746. You can

  1747. see each

  1748. other.

  1749. We don't

  1750. bring the

  1751. lights down.

  1752. You need

  1753. to see the

  1754. people who

  1755. are around

  1756. you.

  1757. Hello,

  1758. beloved.

  1759. Hello,

  1760. church.

  1761. We gather

  1762. to be

  1763. together,

  1764. not separate

  1765. from one

  1766. another.

  1767. Put you in

  1768. isolation

  1769. chambers and

  1770. put your

  1771. earbuds in so

  1772. that you

  1773. can't

  1774. distract it

  1775. by anybody

  1776. else.

  1777. You need

  1778. the people

  1779. around you

  1780. to sing

  1781. off key

  1782. and to

  1783. sing loud

  1784. off key

  1785. because they

  1786. love Jesus.

  1787. That your

  1788. affections would

  1789. be inflamed

  1790. for him as

  1791. well.

  1792. We need

  1793. that.

  1794. I missed

  1795. this morning.

  1796. Almost every

  1797. morning I

  1798. get you guys,

  1799. the sound

  1800. bounces out of

  1801. this corner

  1802. and I stand

  1803. in the back.

  1804. That's why I

  1805. stand back

  1806. there.

  1807. It's not

  1808. because I'm

  1809. trying to

  1810. avoid you

  1811. guys.

  1812. It's because

  1813. the sound

  1814. goes back

  1815. to that

  1816. corner and

  1817. I can hear

  1818. everybody

  1819. singing.

  1820. There's a

  1821. big choir.

  1822. It so

  1823. warms my

  1824. heart before I

  1825. come up to

  1826. preach.

  1827. But I

  1828. missed this

  1829. morning Clay

  1830. who usually

  1831. stands back

  1832. there with

  1833. me and

  1834. sings alongside

  1835. me in his

  1836. gruff CF

  1837. caused voice

  1838. because I

  1839. know he

  1840. believes the

  1841. truth and

  1842. it helps me

  1843. believe the

  1844. truth and

  1845. it builds

  1846. me up.

  1847. It spurs me

  1848. on to

  1849. sing songs

  1850. like that.

  1851. Let me

  1852. posit to you

  1853. that if

  1854. you're not

  1855. a singer,

  1856. you should

  1857. be because

  1858. the people

  1859. around you

  1860. need to

  1861. hear you

  1862. sing.

  1863. It takes

  1864. a little

  1865. practice.

  1866. I'm not a

  1867. good singer

  1868. but I

  1869. sing.

  1870. Sing.

  1871. We need to

  1872. be singing

  1873. to one

  1874. another.

  1875. The volume

  1876. level in

  1877. here needs

  1878. to be low

  1879. enough that

  1880. you can hear

  1881. people around

  1882. you.

  1883. We need to

  1884. be able to

  1885. hear each

  1886. other singing.

  1887. There's a

  1888. different way

  1889. to lead a

  1890. congregation

  1891. in singing

  1892. than to

  1893. put on

  1894. a concert.

  1895. Why?

  1896. Because Paul's

  1897. instruction is

  1898. that we're to

  1899. be teaching

  1900. and admonishing

  1901. one another.

  1902. that includes

  1903. the band

  1904. teaching and

  1905. admonishing

  1906. you but we

  1907. need to be

  1908. teaching and

  1909. admonishing

  1910. one another

  1911. and addressing

  1912. one another

  1913. as we sing

  1914. together.

  1915. Not only that

  1916. but we actually

  1917. need to be able

  1918. to sing it

  1919. and there's so

  1920. many songs

  1921. now that are

  1922. wonderful songs.

  1923. There are great

  1924. great great

  1925. songs written

  1926. by Christian

  1927. people that

  1928. will minister

  1929. to your soul

  1930. that you should

  1931. definitely listen

  1932. to by yourself

  1933. in a car

  1934. singing at the

  1935. top of your

  1936. lungs.

  1937. Do that.

  1938. They're so

  1939. hard to sing.

  1940. There's many

  1941. songs like this

  1942. like almost

  1943. every Christmas

  1944. song is that

  1945. way.

  1946. Difficult to

  1947. sing but good.

  1948. Oh so good.

  1949. Be ministered

  1950. to by those

  1951. songs but when

  1952. we come together

  1953. to sing there's

  1954. some songs we're

  1955. just not going to

  1956. do because they're

  1957. not singable.

  1958. Wonderful songs

  1959. but not singable.

  1960. Sometimes the

  1961. band will do a

  1962. song like during

  1963. the offering time

  1964. and also just say

  1965. you don't have to

  1966. sing this with us.

  1967. Like it's cool

  1968. because it's hard

  1969. to sing.

  1970. Does it have a

  1971. recognizable rhythm?

  1972. We all like those

  1973. songs.

  1974. Come on.

  1975. We know exactly.

  1976. We know what to

  1977. expect.

  1978. We know when it's

  1979. coming.

  1980. Does it have a

  1981. recognizable rhythm?

1982. Is it in a range

  1983. designed for the

  1984. average human being?

  1985. A lot of songs

  1986. are the chance for

  1987. a music leader to

  1988. show off how high

  1989. his voice can go.

  1990. Can it be played

  1991. well by our

  1992. musicians?

  1993. Is it stylistically

  1994. can they get

  1995. together on it

  1996. and play it?

  1997. That matters,

  1998. right?

  1999. That they can

  2000. actually perform

  2001. the song for us.

  2002. And I'm not saying

  2003. that style is the

  2004. question here.

  2005. And you've heard me

  2006. say if you've been

  2007. here for very long

2008. that if all we had

  2009. was a little old

  2010. lady and a piano,

  2011. that's how we do

  2012. music.

  2013. We're just fortunate

2014. to have a bunch of

  2015. musicians who do

  2016. their folk rocky

2017. kind of thing for us.

  2018. But the style itself

  2019. is never the point.

  2020. It's the content.

  2021. It's the content

  2022. that carries it that

  2023. is the point of

  2024. what we do together.

  2025. So I want to run a

  2026. couple songs through

  2027. that filter for you.

2028. I just want to give

2029. you an example to be

2030. able to look at this.

  2031. First, I'm going to

  2032. look at, super brief,

  2033. three songs from CCLI.

  2034. CCLI is the Christian

  2035. Copyright Licensing

  2036. International.

2037. It's the way all of the

  2038. contemporary Christian

  2039. artists get paid for

  2040. their music that's

  2041. performed each and

  2042. every Sunday.

2043. We keep track of it

2044. and they get a payment.

2045. I'm really glad we do

2046. lots of songs that are

  2047. public domain.

2048. So I just looked in

  2049. the top 20.

2050. So these are three of

2051. the most, dare I say,

  2052. performed songs on

  2053. Sunday mornings.

2054. And I want to point out

  2055. some things to you

  2056. about them.

  2057. They're not all bad.

  2058. They're not all bad.

  2059. They're not all bad.

  2060. But reasons why we

  2061. would never sing these

  2062. songs on a Sunday

  2063. morning.

2064. The first one is called

  2065. Good, Good Father by

  2066. Chris Tomlin.

  2067. Familiar with this song?

  2068. Flip on radio, you'll

  2069. hear it.

  2070. This is number one,

  2071. Good, Good Father by

  2072. Chris Tomlin.

  2073. It's not a bad song.

2074. It's got some good stuff

  2075. in it.

2076. And I want to point out

  2077. one little thing that

  2078. irks me about it.

2079. But let me read the

  2080. lyrics to you.

  2081. I thought about having

2082. them put up on the

  2083. screen, but I don't

  2084. actually think you need

  2085. them on the screen.

2086. This is how the song

  2087. goes.

  2088. I've heard a thousand

  2089. stories of what they

  2090. think you're like, but

  2091. I've heard the tender

2092. whispers of love in the

  2093. dead of night.

2094. And you tell me that

  2095. you're pleased and that

  2096. I'm never alone.

  2097. You're a good, good

  2098. father.

  2099. It's who you are.

  2100. It's who you are.

  2101. It's who you are.

2102. And I'm loved by you.

  2103. It's who I am.

  2104. It's who I am.

  2105. It's who I am.

  2106. I've seen many

  2107. searching for answers

2108. far and wide, but I

  2109. know we're all

  2110. searching for answers

  2111. only you provide.

  2112. Because you know just

2113. what we need before we

  2114. say a word.

  2115. You're a good, good

  2116. father.

  2117. It's who you are.

  2118. It's who you are.

  2119. It's who you are.

2120. And I'm loved by you.

  2121. It's who I am.

  2122. It's who I am.

  2123. It's who I am.

  2124. Because you are

  2125. perfect in all your

  2126. ways.

  2127. Repeat that five

  2128. times.

  2129. Oh, it's love so

  2130. undeniable.

  2131. I can hardly speak.

  2132. Here comes the thing

  2133. I don't like.

  2134. Peace so

  2135. unexplainable.

  2136. I can hardly

  2137. think.

  2138. As you call me

  2139. deeper still,

  2140. as you call me

  2141. deeper still,

  2142. as you call me

  2143. deeper still,

  2144. into love,

  2145. love, love.

  2146. You're a good,

  2147. good father.

  2148. It's who you are.

  2149. It's who you are.

  2150. It's who you are.

2151. And I'm loved by you.

  2152. It's who I am.

  2153. It's who I am.

  2154. It's who I am.

  2155. Repeat four more times.

  2156. Okay?

  2157. So,

  2158. the only thing

  2159. that I find

  2160. I'm uncomfortable

  2161. with is that

  2162. I can hardly think,

  2163. right?

  2164. And I can get

  2165. the thrust

  2166. of what he was

  2167. trying to say there

  2168. and even be

  2169. okay with that.

  2170. So, right,

  2171. there's not like,

  2172. it's not like,

  2173. oh, my word,

  2174. right?

2175. The heresy of the song.

  2176. It's not that.

  2177. It's not.

  2178. It's not.

  2179. But if we were

  2180. just to scale out

  2181. some of,

  2182. you know,

  2183. truth,

  2184. depth,

  2185. singability,

  2186. I listened to a recording

  2187. of it this week.

  2188. I think it's pretty singable.

  2189. I'd give him an A

  2190. on singability.

2191. I think you can hang.

  2192. I think Tomlin

2193. does a pretty good job

  2194. of writing songs

  2195. that way,

  2196. maybe even intentionally so.

  2197. Truth,

  2198. I'd give him a B.

  2199. I think

  2200. because of that

  2201. one little error,

  2202. bugs me particularly

  2203. a bit.

  2204. And I'm the one

  2205. giving the grade,

  2206. so I'm allowed to.

  2207. For depth,

  2208. though,

  2209. I'm going to give it a D

  2210. because here's the summary.

  2211. And it's good truth,

  2212. right?

  2213. It's good truth

  2214. and it's good things

  2215. to consider.

  2216. But again,

  2217. I'm saying like,

2218. are we going to spend

  2219. six minutes

2220. of our very short time

  2221. together,

  2222. our longer time

  2223. this morning together

  2224. on this?

  2225. Is this what we're

  2226. going to do?

  2227. Summary of this song.

  2228. You're a good father

  2229. and you love me.

  2230. Good father

  2231. and you love me.

  2232. Again,

  2233. good truths,

  2234. right?

  2235. But why

  2236. and how?

  2237. To what degree?

  2238. Important things

  2239. for us to be

  2240. considering.

  2241. Next song,

2242. I'm not going to read

  2243. the lyrics of these

  2244. next two.

  2245. The next song

  2246. is called

  2247. Holy Spirit

  2248. by Brian and Katie

  2249. Torwalt.

  2250. These are Jesus culture

  2251. folks,

  2252. a couple from

  2253. Jesus culture.

  2254. this song,

  2255. just of interesting

  2256. note,

  2257. is typically

  2258. performed,

  2259. I found a bunch

  2260. of YouTube

  2261. recordings of this

  2262. song.

  2263. The shortest one

  2264. I found was

  2265. nine minutes.

  2266. The longest one

  2267. I found was

  2268. 18 minutes.

  2269. This song

  2270. and I just,

  2271. it doesn't say

  2272. nearly enough

  2273. for 18 minutes.

  2274. There's just,

  2275. there's just not

  2276. that much in it.

  2277. Now again,

  2278. the song itself

  2279. doesn't,

  2280. doesn't air.

  2281. There's nothing

  2282. in there that I

  2283. went,

  2284. ooh,

  2285. that's not good

  2286. for God's,

  2287. God's people

  2288. to hear.

  2289. Singability,

  2290. an A.

  2291. Depth,

  2292. depth,

  2293. a D.

  2294. Again,

  2295. it's not a lot

  2296. of strong substance.

  2297. It's about the

  2298. Holy Spirit

  2299. and God's presence

  2300. being the world.

  2301. But for truth,

  2302. I give it a D

  2303. because

  2304. Jesus culture,

  2305. as well as

  2306. Hillsong United,

  2307. the other song,

  2308. I actually graded

  2309. these the same.

  2310. Hillsong United

  2311. has a song

  2312. out called

  2313. Oceans.

  2314. It's a really

  2315. pretty song.

  2316. It's really,

  2317. really pretty.

  2318. I like the song.

  2319. But both

  2320. Hillsong United

  2321. and Jesus culture

  2322. are part of a

  2323. movement called

  2324. the Word of Faith

  2325. movement.

  2326. It's the prosperity

  2327. gospel dressed up

  2328. in different language.

  2329. It's very

  2330. extra biblical

  2331. and very dangerous.

  2332. Both of these,

  2333. we'll call them

  2334. bands,

  2335. Hillsong United

  2336. and Jesus Culture

  2337. support ministries

  2338. of Word of Faith

  2339. teachers.

  2340. That's also called

  2341. the New Apostolic

  2342. Reformation.

2343. If you want to go

  2344. look some of this

  2345. stuff up,

  2346. you'll go,

  2347. whoa,

  2348. they're teaching

  2349. what?

  2350. And this is like

  2351. the soft entry

  2352. to it because

  2353. their songs are

  2354. never astoundingly

  2355. erroneous,

  2356. but you get

  2357. introduced to the

  2358. teaching of

  2359. the men that

  2360. then come to

  2361. stage afterwards

  2362. and it's

  2363. horrible,

  2364. heretical,

  2365. dangerous teaching

  2366. that you're getting

  2367. introduced to.

  2368. So we'll never do

  2369. Jesus Culture

  2370. or Hillsong United

  2371. song knowingly,

  2372. I should probably

  2373. say,

  2374. because we don't

  2375. want to suggest

  2376. to you that we

  2377. think it's okay

  2378. that what they're

  2379. involved with

  2380. as a total

  2381. is good

  2382. because the truth

  2383. matters,

  2384. right?

  2385. Because the truth

  2386. matters.

  2387. Let me walk

  2388. through a song

  2389. that we do

  2390. sing together.

  2391. This song gets

  2392. A's across the

  2393. board.

  2394. It's a new

  2395. song,

  2396. right?

  2397. So we don't

  2398. sing all old

  2399. songs,

  2400. although a lot

  2401. of them feel

  2402. old because

  2403. they have words,

  2404. which is just

  2405. not a thing we

  2406. tend to like as

  2407. a culture,

  2408. it would seem.

  2409. Come behold the

  2410. wondrous mystery.

  2411. I think we're

  2412. going to sing it

  2413. this morning,

  2414. this afternoon,

  2415. together,

  2416. and I think

  2417. we have lyrics

  2418. on the screen.

  2419. Come behold

  2420. the wondrous

  2421. mystery.

  2422. In the

  2423. dawning of

  2424. the king,

  2425. he the theme

  2426. of heaven's

  2427. praises,

  2428. robed in

  2429. frail humanity.

  2430. In our

  2431. longing,

  2432. in our

  2433. darkness,

  2434. now the

  2435. light of

  2436. life has

  2437. come.

  2438. Look to

  2439. Christ who

  2440. condescended,

  2441. took on

  2442. flesh to

  2443. ransom us.

  2444. There is

  2445. more depth

  2446. in verse

  2447. one of

  2448. that song

  2449. than all

  2450. the three

  2451. songs previous

  2452. combined.

  2453. The writers

  2454. here speak

  2455. of the

  2456. incarnation

  2457. of Christ,

  2458. John 1,

  2459. 1-5,

  2460. the purpose

  2461. of his

  2462. incarnation,

  2463. Luke 19-10,

  2464. for the

  2465. Son of

  2466. Man came

  2467. to seek

  2468. and to

  2469. save

  2470. the lost.

  2471. Verse

  2472. 2,

  2473. come behold

  2474. the wondrous

  2475. mystery,

  2476. he the

  2477. perfect

  2478. Son of

  2479. Man,

  2480. in his

  2481. living,

  2482. in his

  2483. suffering,

  2484. never trace

  2485. nor stain

  2486. of sin.

  2487. See the

  2488. true and

  2489. better Adam

  2490. come to

  2491. save the

  2492. hell-bound

  2493. man,

  2494. Christ the

  2495. great and

  2496. sure fulfillment

  2497. of the

  2498. law,

  2499. in him we

  2500. stand.

  2501. It speaks

  2502. of the

  2503. judgment

  2504. of man,

  2505. the hell-bound

  2506. man,

  2507. the deprivacy

  2508. of man,

  2509. speaks of

  2510. the active

  2511. and passive

  2512. suffering of

  2513. Jesus Christ,

  2514. 2 Corinthians

  2515. 5,

  2516. 21,

  2517. for our

  2518. sake,

  2519. he made

  2520. him to

  2521. be sin

  2522. who knew

  2523. no sin,

  2524. so that in

  2525. him we

  2526. might become

  2527. the righteousness

  2528. of God.

  2529. Romans 5,

  2530. 17,

  2531. another.

  2532. Verse 3,

  2533. we're only

  2534. halfway in,

  2535. come behold

  2536. the wondrous

  2537. mystery,

  2538. Christ the

  2539. Lord upon

  2540. the tree,

  2541. in the

  2542. stead of

  2543. ruined

  2544. sinners,

  2545. that's to

  2546. say instead

  2547. of ruined

  2548. sinners,

  2549. in the

  2550. stead of

  2551. ruined

  2552. sinners,

  2553. hangs the

  2554. lamb in

  2555. victory.

  2556. See the

  2557. price of

  2558. our redemption,

  2559. see the

  2560. Father's

  2561. plan unfold,

  2562. bringing many

  2563. sons to

  2564. glory,

  2565. grace

  2566. unmeasured,

  2567. love

  2568. untold.

  2569. He speaks

  2570. of the

  2571. sovereignty of

  2572. God in

  2573. the suffering

  2574. of Christ,

  2575. speaks of

  2576. the

  2577. substitutionary

  2578. atonement

  2579. of Christ,

  2580. 1 Corinthians

  2581. 15,

  2582. 3,

  2583. Christ died

  2584. for our

  2585. sins in

  2586. accordance

  2587. with the

  2588. scriptures.

  2589. Verse 4,

  2590. come behold

  2591. the wondrous

  2592. mystery,

  2593. slain by

  2594. death the

  2595. God of

  2596. life,

  2597. but no

  2598. grave could

  2599. e'er

  2600. restrain

  2601. him,

  2602. praise the

  2603. Lord,

  2604. he is

  2605. alive.

  2606. What a

  2607. foretaste

  2608. of deliverance,

  2609. how

  2610. unwavering

  2611. our hope,

  2612. Christ in

  2613. power

  2614. resurrected

  2615. as we

  2616. will be

  2617. when he

  2618. comes.

  2619. What a

  2620. foretaste

  2621. of deliverance,

  2622. how unwavering

  2623. our hope,

  2624. Christ in

  2625. power

  2626. resurrected

  2627. as we

  2628. will be

  2629. when he

  2630. comes.

  2631. It speaks

  2632. of the

  2633. resurrection

  2634. of Christ,

  2635. our conquering

  2636. king.

  2637. 1 Corinthians

  2638. 15,

  2639. 4,

  2640. he was

  2641. buried,

  2642. he was

  2643. raised on

  2644. the third

  2645. day in

  2646. accordance

  2647. with the

  2648. scripture.

  2649. And it

  2650. also speaks

  2651. of the

  2652. glorification

  2653. of the

  2654. saints.

  2655. It turns

  2656. to us

  2657. and what

  2658. will one

  2659. day become

  2660. of us

  2661. that we

  2662. will have

  2663. resurrected

  2664. bodies,

  2665. Colossians

  2666. 3,

  2667. 4,

  2668. when Christ

  2669. who is

  2670. your life

  2671. appears,

  2672. then you

  2673. will also

  2674. appear with

  2675. him in

  2676. glory.

  2677. And so I

  2678. hope,

  2679. just in

  2680. brief,

  2681. right,

  2682. to give

  2683. you a

  2684. better

  2685. picture.

  2686. Sometimes I

  2687. know we

  2688. can sing

  2689. songs and

  2690. you can

  2691. just fly

  2692. past all

  2693. of the

  2694. meaning of

  2695. a song.

  2696. And that

  2697. was just

  2698. a few

  2699. of the

  2700. things,

  2701. packed full

  2702. of good,

  2703. rich truth,

  2704. which will

  2705. help the

  2706. word of

  2707. God dwell

  2708. in you

  2709. richly.

  2710. Which is

  2711. the same

  2712. thing as

  2713. walking by

  2714. the Spirit.

  2715. And if you

  2716. walk by

  2717. the Spirit,

  2718. you will

  2719. not fulfill

  2720. the desires

  2721. of the

  2722. flesh.

  2723. You'll be

  2724. pleasing to

  2725. God.

  2726. And you'll

  2727. worship him

  2728. with everything

  2729. that you

  2730. do.

  2731. Truth,

  2732. depth,

  2733. singability,

  2734. for the

  2735. glory of

  2736. God and

  2737. for the

  2738. good of

  2739. his people.

  2740. Let us

  2741. be a

  2742. people,

  2743. a church,

  2744. who sing

  2745. to one

  2746. another,

  2747. and who

  2748. know why

  2749. we sing

  2750. to one

  2751. another,

  2752. and who

  2753. know what

  2754. and how

  2755. we should

  2756. sing to

  2757. one another.

  2758. Let's pray

  2759. together.
