    Acts 18 chapter mention

  3. Acts chapter 18 in our text for this morning will be verses 1-23.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  4. ! This is Luke's second narrative account of Jesus' life.

  5. His first is the Gospel according to Luke, which is about Jesus' earthly ministry.

  6. His second is the book we're studying this morning and have been for quite some time,

  7. often called the Acts of the Apostles, which I like to call the Acts of the Risen and Ascended Jesus.

  8. It was written that we might witness the working of Jesus by the agency of the Holy Spirit in the lives of His church.

  9. In today's text, we will note the conclusion of the Apostle Paul's second missionary journey.

  10. But first we're going to see his arrival and ministry in the city of Corinth.

  11. He has traveled now down through Macedonia.

  12. He's in Europe now.

  13. From Philippi to Thessalonica and then to Berea.

  14. He has been beaten and imprisoned.

  15. He has escaped a mob riot and he has been chased out of the region.

  16. He has gone further south to Athens where he sees gospel fruit, but it seems not much.

  17. And in verse 1 of chapter 18, Luke records for us,

  18. after this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.

  19. Corinth was on the land bridge that connects the Peloponnesian Peninsula with mainland Greece.

  20. I'd encourage you to look at that.

  21. You may even have a map in the back of your copy of God's Word that would show you this little island,

  22. this little bridge, this little land bridge between the two.

  23. Not an island, a land bridge.

  24. It was, therefore, in a very strategic location as the city of Corinth had two ports,

  25. one on the east coast, the other on the west.

  26. In order to save a 200-mile journey around the peninsula,

  27. many ships were taken out at one port, and I found this so fascinating as an aside,

  28. and rolled on logs for four miles through the city to be put in the other port.

  29. This was easier.

  30. This was more efficient than sailing all the way around the peninsula.

  31. Also of interesting note, in AD 67, so beyond the time of our text today,

  32. Nero began a canal that was not completed until 1893.

  33. Now if you look at a modern map, you'll see a canal that cuts across that land bridge.

  34. The town of Corinth was a transient town.

  35. Lots of sailors, lots of tradesmen,

  36. very little stability in the town,

  37. and as such it was full of vice.

  38. What comes to my mind when I think of Corinth is

  39. what happens in Corinth stays in Corinth.

  40. People coming and going all the time and living licentiously as a result.

  41. 1,500 feet above the city of Corinth was the Acropolis,

  42. where the temple of Aphrodite was.

  43. Each evening the temple's 1,000 priestesses,

  44. who were ritual prostitutes,

  45. would descend the mountain into the city for the quote-unquote worship of Aphrodite.

  46. Corinth surpassed other Greek cities in wickedness,

  47. and that's saying a lot.

  48. It actually became the phrase,

  49. to Corinthianize,

  50. was common in this day,

  51. which meant to practice whoredom,

  52. to Corinthianize.

  53. It was a dark and depressing city.

  54. And we find Paul there discouraged.

  55. As he reflects upon his time in Corinth,

  56. when writing to the church there in 1 Corinthians 2.3,

  57. he says,

  58. and I was with you in weakness,

  59. and in fear,

  60. and much trembling.

  61. I was not encouraged,

  62. I was discouraged when I came to you.

  63. Do you ever feel discouraged in your faith?

  64. Has your labor in the gospel ever been or felt fruitless?

  65. I know that our common discouragement shared amongst our church

  66. comes because we see so many people come,

  67. but then also so many people go.

  68. Those of us who stay here can often feel discouraged

  69. as we send people out.

  70. But beloved, this should not be so.

  71. We are positioned in a place,

  72. in a unique way,

  73. to minister far and wide the Word of the Lord.

  74. We have seen this across the past eight years.

  75. We gather and go each week here in this area.

  76. And we gather in Dahlonega.

  77. And we go to the ends of the earth.

  78. Is that an encouraging reality?

  79. Or a discouraging one?

  80. Saying goodbye to people that we love

  81. will always be bittersweet.

  82. It should never not be.

  83. Have some element of bitter to it.

  84. It's hard to say goodbye

  85. to people that we know and love

  86. and share our lives with.

  87. But I contend with you today

  88. that it ultimately ought to be sweet.

  89. It ought to be an encouragement

  90. to our souls to see people sent forth.

  91. And this is going to get tested.

  92. It's been tested in the past.

  93. We've sent a lot of people out from this place.

  94. I noted to you last week

  95. that if you take our start date,

  96. we just honestly,

  97. we kind of picked a random date.

  98. When do we actually exist as we exist?

  99. We said January 1 of 2009.

  100. And you come to the present day,

  101. there are only six people

  102. who are original members of our church

  103. that have had an uninterrupted time here.

  104. Only six.

  105. Across eight years.

  106. And that's not been because of turmoil.

  107. And I know a lot of you are fresh

  108. and new to the life of our church.

  109. We've had a very good and growing congregation.

  110. We haven't had massive upheavals and upsets.

  111. And all of a sudden,

  112. we're one number

  113. and then we're half that number

  114. because people got upset

  115. and got in clubs

  116. and took off.

  117. We've never had any kind of controversy like that.

  118. But people have come

  119. and they have been trained up,

  120. we hope, by grace.

  121. And then they've gone.

  122. Gone off to other places.

  123. We've seen people go all over the world.

  124. We've seen people spread across the southeast.

  125. Last year,

  126. we had the great blessing

  127. of starting another church

  128. in Oakwood, Georgia.

  129. And I don't know about you guys,

  130. but when we get together all together

  131. at things like the picnic yesterday,

  132. I feel that loss a little more.

  133. Like I recognize how much I miss

  134. some of those people

  135. when I see them again.

  136. Like, ah,

  137. it was so good

  138. when I got to see you every week

  139. and now it seems to be only

  140. a couple times a year.

  141. We recently sent out

  142. Ash and Janine Harris.

  143. Ash took a job

  144. in Boone, North Carolina.

  145. I mentioned earlier,

  146. Oziama,

  147. Obele,

  148. going to Brazil soon.

  149. Kirby and Leanna White

  150. are going to soon be leaving

  151. in just a couple of weeks,

  152. going to Washington State

  153. where Kirby is from.

  154. Michael and Lauren Shealy

  155. are moving.

  156. He's being commissioned

  157. and stationed.

  158. They're moving to Columbus, Georgia.

  159. Daniel and Carly Walker

  160. are going back to Madison County

  161. at least for a season.

  162. We don't know how long

  163. at this point,

  164. but they will be gone

  165. for a bit of time.

  166. And Phillip and Natalie Akins

  167. are going to Canton

  168. for jobs there.

  169. And I may have missed somebody.

  170. I really tried not to,

  171. but I may have missed

  172. someone who will be leaving us

  173. probably for good.

  174. There are countless others.

  175. College students,

  176. many of you are going to be gone

  177. after this Sunday.

  178. And the summer will be

  179. a little bit more quiet

  180. without you here

  181. and you will be missed.

  182. I'm becoming further

  183. and further convinced

  184. that faithful gospel ministry

  185. leaves much room

  186. for discouragement.

  187. But,

  188. I want to be encouraged

  189. in the midst

  190. of faithful gospel ministry.

  191. So join me in our text

  192. for today

  193. to that end.

  194. That is where we're aiming

  195. to be encouraged

  196. in the midst

  197. of faithful gospel ministry.

  198. Beloved,

  199. this is God's word to us.

  200. It was written for His glory

  201. and for our good.

  202. And we would all do well

  203. to listen to it

  204. in order to believe

  205. its promises

  206. and obey its commands.

  207. Begin reading in verse 1.

  208. After this,

  209. Paul left Athens

  210. and went to Corinth.

  211. And he found a Jew

  212. named Aquila,

  213. a native of Pontus,

  214. recently come from Italy

  215. with his wife Priscilla

  216. because Claudius

  217. had commanded

  218. all the Jews

  219. to leave Rome.

  220. And he went to see them.

  221. And because he was

  222. of the same trade,

  223. he stayed with them

  224. and worked,

  225. for they were tent makers

  226. by trade.

  227. And he reasoned

  228. in the synagogue

  229. every Sabbath

  230. and tried to persuade

  231. Jews and Greeks.

  232. When Silas and Timothy

  233. arrived from Macedonia,

  234. Paul was occupied

  235. with the word,

  236. testifying to the Jews

  237. that the Christ

  238. was Jesus.

  239. And when they opposed

  240. and reviled him,

  241. he shook out his garments

  242. and said to them,

  243. your blood be on your own heads.

  244. I am innocent.

  245. From now on,

  246. I will go to the Gentiles.

  247. And he left there

  248. and went to the house

  249. of a man named Titius Justice,

  250. a worshiper of God.

  251. His house was next door

  252. to the synagogue.

  253. Crispus,

  254. the ruler of the synagogue,

  255. believed in the Lord

  256. together with his entire household.

  257. And many of the Corinthians

  258. hearing Paul believed

  259. and were baptized.

  260. And the Lord said to Paul

  261. one night in a vision,

  262. Do not be afraid,

  263. but go on speaking

  264. and do not be silent,

  265. for I am with you

  266. and no one will attack you

  267. to harm you,

  268. for I have many in this city

  269. who are my people.

  270. And he stayed a year

  271. and six months

  272. teaching the word of God

  273. among them.

  274. But when Galio

  275. was proconsul of Achaia,

  276. the Jews made a united attack

  277. on Paul

  278. and brought him

  279. before the tribunal,

  280. saying,

  281. this man is persuading people

  282. to worship God

  283. contrary to the law.

  284. But when Paul

  285. was about to open his mouth,

  286. Galio said to the Jews,

  287. If it were a matter

  288. of wrongdoing

  289. or vicious crime,

  290. O Jews,

  291. I would have reason

  292. to accept your complaint.

  293. But since it is a matter

  294. of questions

  295. about words and names

  296. and your own law,

  297. see to it yourselves.

  298. I refuse to be a judge

  299. of these things.

  300. And he drove them

  301. from the tribunal.

  302. And they all seized

  303. Sosthenes,

  304. the ruler of the synagogue,

  305. and beat him

  306. in front of the tribunal.

  307. But Galio paid no attention

  308. to any of this.

  309. After this,

  310. Paul stayed many days longer

  311. and then took leave

  312. of the brothers

  313. and set sail for Syria

  314. and with him

  315. Priscilla and Aquila.

  316. At Kincray,

  317. he had cut his hair

  318. for he was under a vow.

  319. And they came to Ephesus

  320. and he left them there,

  321. but he himself

  322. went into the synagogue

  323. and reasoned

  324. with the Jews.

  325. When they asked him

  326. to stay for a longer period,

  327. he declined.

  328. But on taking leave of them,

  329. he said,

  330. I will return to you

  331. if God wills.

  332. And he set sail

  333. from Ephesus.

  334. When he had landed

  335. at Caesarea,

  336. he went up

  337. and greeted the church

  338. and then went down

  339. to Antioch.

  340. After spending

  341. some time there,

  342. he departed

  343. and went from one place

  344. to the next

  345. through the region

  346. of Galatia

  347. and Phrygia,

  348. strengthening

  349. all the disciples.

  350. Now,

  351. that is a lot of text,

  352. right?

  353. And the information

  354. comes at us

  355. almost in a rapid-fire sense.

  356. And so,

  357. I understand

  358. if you're already going

  359. why

  360. verses 1-23.

  361. So it's my hope

  362. to wrap it together

  363. for you

  364. thematically

  365. by helping us

  366. consider

  367. five ways

  368. that God

  369. encourages

  370. the souls

  371. of His discouraged

  372. servants.

  373. Five ways

  374. that God

  375. encourages

  376. the souls

  377. of His

  378. discouraged

  379. servants.

  380. And I'm going

  381. to give those

  382. five to you

  383. and then we'll

  384. take them

  385. one at a time.

  386. So number one,

  387. God encourages

  388. the souls

  389. of His

  390. discouraged

  391. servants

  392. number one

  393. with new

  394. partners.

  395. Number two

  396. with provision.

  397. Number three

  398. with His

  399. presence.

  400. Number four

  401. with protection.

  402. I guess they all

  403. start with P's.

  404. Number five,

  405. with purpose.

  406. In so many ways

  407. I'm not a good

  408. Baptist,

  409. but in that way

  410. I am.

  411. I like to

  412. alliterate.

  413. So firstly,

  414. God encourages

  415. the souls

  416. of His

  417. discouraged

  418. servants

  419. with new

  420. partners.

  421. We see Him

  422. in this new

  423. city

  424. by Himself.

  425. He does not

  426. have

  427. Silas and

  428. Timothy.

  429. His missionary

  430. band has been

  431. split up for

  432. various

  433. circumstances.

  434. And we find

  435. Him by

  436. Himself,

  437. but He

  438. seeks out,

  439. it would

  440. seem,

  441. He finds

  442. a Jew

  443. named

  444. Aquila,

  445. a native of

  446. Pontus,

  447. and his

  448. wife

  449. Priscilla.

  450. And He

  451. joins

  452. Himself

  453. to them.

  454. They are

  455. also

  456. tent makers

  457. by trade

  458. and He

  459. stays with

  460. them and

  461. He works

  462. with them.

  463. And the

  464. Bible does not

  465. tell us of

  466. the conversion

  467. of Aquila

  468. and Priscilla,

  469. but they

  470. were likely

  471. already

  472. Christians

  473. at this

  474. point,

  475. having come

  476. from the

  477. church that

  478. already existed

  479. in Rome.

  480. We can

  481. fail as we

  482. study Acts

  483. to remember

  484. that the

  485. Gospel was

  486. not just

  487. going forth

  488. into the

  489. world on a

  490. single front.

  491. It wasn't

  492. just Paul

  493. and his

  494. missionary

  495. band that

  496. was preaching

  497. the good

  498. news of

  499. Jesus Christ.

  500. But followers

  501. of Jesus

  502. Christ were

  503. doing what

  504. followers of

  505. Jesus Christ

  506. do.

  507. They were

  508. taking the

  509. message of

  510. God's saving

  511. work to

  512. all people.

  513. Luke's

  514. narrative is

  515. primarily about

  516. the Apostle

  517. Paul's ministry

  518. as it should

  519. be and as it

  520. serves us

  521. well, but the

  522. Gospel is

  523. going forth.

  524. And so it's

  525. likely that this

  526. couple have

  527. already become

  528. part of the

  529. church in

  530. Rome before

  531. ever meeting

  532. Paul.

  533. Likely.

  534. We don't

  535. know for

  536. sure, but

  537. likely.

  538. And God

  539. in His

  540. gracious

  541. providence

  542. brings new

  543. partners in

  544. the Gospel

  545. to Corinth

  546. ahead of

  547. Paul.

  548. Catch that.

  549. Before Paul

  550. ever gets

  551. there, Aquila

  552. and Priscilla

  553. are there.

  554. Brought there,

  555. partners of the

  556. same trade,

  557. they give him

  558. a place to

  559. stay,

  560. they give

  561. him a

  562. livelihood

  563. upon his

  564. arrival.

  565. And the

  566. way in which

  567. they arrive

  568. there, Luke

  569. records for

  570. us because of

  571. the command

  572. of Claudius

  573. that all

  574. the Jews

  575. had to leave

  576. Rome.

  577. That decree

  578. is mentioned

  579. here in this

  580. text and

  581. one other

  582. place in

  583. all recorded

  584. history by

  585. a Roman

  586. historian named

  587. Suetonus,

  588. I think,

  589. who wrote

  590. 70 years

  591. after the

  592. fact the

  593. following.

  594. As the

  595. Jews were

  596. indulging in

  597. constant

  598. riots at

  599. the instigation

  600. of

  601. Crestus,

  602. Claudius

  603. banished them

  604. from Rome.

  605. It's just one

  606. sentence,

  607. this one

  608. mention of

  609. this thing

  610. that happened

  611. by this

  612. Roman historian

  613. Suetonus.

  614. Now,

  615. the word

  616. he uses

  617. here,

  618. Crestus,

  619. a name,

  620. a formal

  621. name,

  622. Crestus,

  623. is just

  624. one letter

  625. variation from

  626. the Latin

  627. for Christ

  628. Christus.

  629. So many

  630. presume that

  631. what was

  632. happening in

  633. Rome was

  634. because of

  635. the preaching

  636. of the

  637. gospel,

  638. Jews were

  639. doing what

  640. so many

  641. Jews seem

  642. to do

  643. in this

  644. day.

  645. They were

  646. getting

  647. furious

  648. about the

  649. preaching

  650. of the

  651. good news

  652. of Jesus

  653. Christ and

  654. were rioting

  655. as a result.

  656. And what

  657. Suetonus

  658. has understood

  659. some years

  660. later,

  661. hearing the

  662. telling,

  663. he keeps

  664. hearing this

  665. name,

  666. that there

  667. was a

  668. man there

  669. that was

  670. causing

  671. all of

  672. this.

  673. Now,

  674. that is

  675. still

  676. possible.

  677. There was

  678. actually a

  679. guy named

  680. Crestus

  681. causing the

  682. Jews to

  683. riot in

  684. Rome.

  685. But I

  686. think more

  687. likely,

  688. he just

  689. made a

  690. mistake in

  691. the hearing

  692. of the

  693. word and

  694. recorded it

  695. as

  696. Crestus.

  697. So,

  698. probably,

  699. the Jews

  700. are in an

  701. uproar all

  702. the time

  703. because of

  704. the preaching

  705. of the

  706. good news

  707. of Jesus

  708. Christ.

  709. And Claudius

  710. sends them

  711. away from

  712. Rome.

  713. And that's

  714. how

  715. Aquila and

  716. Priscilla find

  717. themselves in

  718. Corinth to

  719. become new

  720. partners in

  721. gospel ministry

  722. with Paul.

  723. And they also

  724. become partners

  725. with them in

  726. their living

  727. situation and

  728. in their

  729. livelihood.

  730. The text

  731. says that they

  732. are tent

  733. makers.

  734. If you're

  735. familiar with

  736. the life of

  737. Paul,

  738. you've probably

  739. heard him

  740. spoken of as

  741. a tent

  742. maker,

  743. we can

  744. tend to

  745. use that

  746. term of

  747. bivocational

  748. ministers,

  749. that they're

  750. tent makers,

  751. they do some

  752. other work to

  753. earn their

  754. livelihood than

  755. just preaching

  756. the gospel.

  757. But interestingly,

  758. the Greek word

  759. used for

  760. tent makers

  761. could also

  762. refer to

  763. leather

  764. workers.

  765. It could

  766. also be

  767. leather

  768. workers.

  769. And I

  770. always had

  771. this picture

  772. in my

  773. mind of

  774. Paul with

  775. canvas,

  776. sewing canvas

  777. tents,

  778. but tents in

  779. this day were

  780. made from

  781. animal skin.

  782. They were

  783. made from

  784. leather.

  785. So likely

  786. they made

  787. tents,

  788. but they

  789. also may

  790. have made

  791. many other

  792. things.

  793. Maybe in

  794. Corinth all

  795. the rage

  796. was to

  797. have an

  798. original

  799. Priscilla

  800. purse.

  801. A Paul

  802. belt,

  803. something like

  804. that.

  805. But this is

  806. the work

  807. that they're

  808. doing when

  809. they're

  810. there.

  811. You'll also

  812. note that

  813. Priscilla and

  814. Aquila go

  815. with him.

  816. So verse

  817. 18,

  818. after a year

  819. and a half

  820. and in

  821. this trial,

  822. Paul stays

  823. many days

  824. longer.

  825. Luke records,

  826. we don't know

  827. exactly how

  828. long,

  829. but many

  830. days longer

  831. than he

  832. takes leave

  833. of the

  834. brothers and

  835. sets sails

  836. for Syria

  837. and with

  838. him go

  839. Priscilla

  840. and Aquila.

  841. And then in

  842. verse 19,

  843. when they

  844. come to

  845. Ephesus,

  846. he leaves

  847. them there

  848. and along

  849. with Apollos,

  850. they become

  851. the beginning

  852. of the church

  853. there at

  854. Ephesus.

  855. So they

  856. become partners

  857. with him,

  858. new partners

  859. with him

  860. in gospel

  861. ministry.

  862. Beloved,

  863. this is

  864. God's

  865. church.

  866. It belongs

  867. to him.

  868. Christ's

  869. family church

  870. at Dahlonega

  871. is his.

  872. And if you

  873. are a follower

  874. of Jesus Christ,

  875. you are

  876. God's

  877. children.

  878. And he

  879. will not

  880. leave us

  881. alone.

  882. Partners in

  883. ministry

  884. will go.

  885. They will.

  886. I think

  887. if we're

  888. doing

  889. faithful

  890. ministry,

  891. if we're

  892. looking out

  893. to the

  894. world,

  895. partners in

  896. ministry

  897. will go.

  898. But they

  899. will also

  900. come.

  901. They will

  902. also come.

  903. We have

  904. new opportunity

  905. for new

  906. relationship

  907. and new

  908. investment.

  909. And those

  910. who come

  911. are of great

  912. benefit to

  913. us in

  914. that way.

  915. Paul writes

  916. to the

  917. Philippian

  918. church in

  919. chapter 1

  920. verses 3

  921. through 5

  922. of Philippians.

  923. I thank

  924. my God

  925. in all

  926. my remembrance

  927. of you.

  928. Always in

  929. every prayer

  930. of mine

  931. for you

  932. all making

  933. my prayer

  934. with joy.

  935. Why?

  936. Because of

  937. your partnership

  938. in the

  939. gospel.

  940. From the

  941. first day

  942. when he

  943. came to

  944. them,

  945. when they

  946. became

  947. believers,

  948. until

  949. now.

  950. And so

  951. here's Paul

  952. from a

  953. distance

  954. writing a

  955. letter to

  956. the

  957. Philippian

  958. church,

  959. thanking

  960. God,

  961. praising

  962. him for

  963. the

  964. partnership

  965. they

  966. still

  967. had.

  968. So God

  969. encourages

  970. the souls

  971. of his

  972. discouraged

  973. servants

  974. with new

  975. partners.

  976. Secondly,

  977. he does

  978. so with

  979. provision,

  980. and just

  981. as a

  982. side

  983. alliterated

  984. point,

  985. with provision

  986. from old

  987. partners.

  988. believers.

  989. We see

  990. in the

  991. first part

  992. of verse

  993. 5 that

  994. Silas and

  995. Timothy

  996. arrive from

  997. Macedonia.

  998. You may

  999. recall that

  1000. when Paul

  1001. was in

  1002. Athens,

  1003. he was

  1004. waiting for

  1005. Silas and

  1006. Timothy to

  1007. rejoin him

  1008. as he had

  1009. left them in

  1010. Berea with

  1011. orders to

  1012. come to

  1013. him as

  1014. soon as

  1015. possible.

  1016. That's

  1017. what he

  1018. was there

  1019. doing,

  1020. and then

  1021. as Paul

  1022. does,

  1023. as he's

  1024. waiting,

  1025. he went

  1026. about

  1027. preaching

  1028. the good

  1029. news of

  1030. Christ.

  1031. You can

  1032. see Acts

  1033. 17,

  1034. 15,

  1035. and 16

  1036. about that.

  1037. Now Luke

  1038. does not

  1039. record for

  1040. us that

  1041. Silas and

  1042. Timothy ever

  1043. found Paul

  1044. in Athens,

  1045. but many

  1046. have suggested

  1047. that they

  1048. did and

  1049. were sent

  1050. back into

  1051. Macedonia so

  1052. they would

  1053. have gone

  1054. north once

  1055. again to

  1056. Paul before

  1057. they joined

  1058. him in

  1059. Corinth.

  1060. So he

  1061. meets up

  1062. with them

  1063. in Athens,

  1064. he sends

  1065. them back

  1066. out,

  1067. he goes

  1068. on to

  1069. Corinth,

  1070. and then

  1071. they later

  1072. rejoin him.

  1073. I tend

  1074. to agree,

  1075. and here's

  1076. why.

  1077. In 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 3:1

  1078. 3,

  1079. verses 1 and

  1080. 2,

  1081. Paul writes,

  1082. Therefore,

  1083. when we

  1084. could bear

  1085. it no

  1086. longer,

  1087. we were

  1088. willing to

  1089. be left

  1090. behind at

  1091. Athens

  1092. alone,

  1093. and we

  1094. sent

  1095. Timothy,

  1096. our brother

  1097. and God's

  1098. co-worker in

  1099. the gospel of

  1100. Christ,

  1101. to establish

  1102. and exhort

  1103. you in

  1104. your faith.

  1105. So I

  1106. think,

  1107. therefore,

  1108. when we

  1109. could bear

  1110. it no

  1111. longer,

  1112. as Paul

  1113. and Silas

  1114. and Timothy,

  1115. and then

  1116. we were

  1117. willing to

  1118. be left

  1119. behind at

  1120. Athens

  1121. alone,

  1122. as Paul

  1123. and Silas,

  1124. because they

  1125. sent Timothy

  1126. to the

  1127. Thessalonians.

  1128. Are you

  1129. catching that?

  1130. So at

  1131. very least

  1132. we can

  1133. see that

  1134. it's

  1135. probable,

  1136. it's very

  1137. likely,

  1138. that Timothy

  1139. left them

  1140. in Athens,

  1141. and then Silas

  1142. may have

  1143. also been

  1144. sent

  1145. somewhere.

  1146. But either

  1147. way,

  1148. they come

  1149. and they

  1150. find him.

  1151. They find

  1152. him coming

  1153. from Macedonia,

  1154. they find

  1155. him.

  1156. And when

  1157. they find

  1158. him,

  1159. midway

  1160. through

  1161. verse 5,

  1162. Luke

  1163. records,

  1164. in the

  1165. ESV,

  1166. Paul was

  1167. occupied

  1168. with the

  1169. Word,

  1170. testifying to

  1171. the Jews

  1172. that the

  1173. Christ

  1174. was

  1175. Jesus.

  1176. So we've

  1177. seen him

  1178. earlier in

  1179. the text,

  1180. right?

  1181. He seems

  1182. to be

  1183. working

  1184. during the

  1185. week and

  1186. attending

  1187. the synagogue

  1188. on the

  1189. weekends,

  1190. on the

  1191. Sabbath,

  1192. our

  1193. Saturday.

  1194. But here,

  1195. Paul's

  1196. occupied with

  1197. the Word.

  1198. Acts 18.5

  1199. in the

  1200. NASB

  1201. translation

  1202. says this,

  1203. but when

  1204. Silas and

  1205. Timothy came

  1206. down from

  1207. Macedonia,

  1208. Paul began

  1209. devoting

  1210. himself

  1211. completely

  1212. to the

  1213. Word.

  1214. And I

  1215. think that's

  1216. a better

  1217. rendering of

  1218. the middle

  1219. part of

  1220. verse 5.

  1221. That is to

  1222. say,

  1223. when Silas

  1224. and Timothy

  1225. came and

  1226. joined Paul,

  1227. he began

  1228. to be

  1229. occupied,

  1230. meaning,

  1231. he spent

  1232. all week

  1233. long.

  1234. He was

  1235. able to

  1236. set aside

  1237. tent making

  1238. for the

  1239. sake of

  1240. spending

  1241. more time

  1242. in gospel

  1243. proclamation.

  1244. A bit

  1245. of a

  1246. proof to

  1247. this,

  1248. 2 Corinthians

  1249. 11.9

  1250. And when

  1251. I was

  1252. with you,

  1253. this is

  1254. Paul,

  1255. when I

  1256. was with

  1257. you and

  1258. was in

  1259. need,

  1260. I did

  1261. not burden

  1262. anyone,

  1263. for the

  1264. brothers who

  1265. came from

  1266. Macedonia

  1267. supplied my

  1268. need.

  1269. I think

  1270. he's

  1271. referring to

  1272. Silas and

  1273. Timothy when

  1274. they come

  1275. from

  1276. Macedonia,

  1277. so I

  1278. refrained

  1279. and will

  1280. refrain from

  1281. burdening you

  1282. in any way.

  1283. So they

  1284. bring this

  1285. provision to

  1286. him which

  1287. enables him

  1288. to no longer

  1289. be a tent

  1290. maker but

  1291. to devote

  1292. himself fully

  1293. to gospel

  1294. proclamation,

  1295. at least for

  1296. this frame

  1297. of his

  1298. ministry.

  1299. God

  1300. provides

  1301. for his

  1302. own.

  1303. God cares

  1304. for his

  1305. people and

  1306. this should

  1307. greatly

  1308. encourage our

  1309. souls.

  1310. God

  1311. cares,

  1312. beloved,

  1313. about every

  1314. tiny little

  1315. detail of

  1316. your little

  1317. life.

  1318. In

  1319. Matthew

    Matthew 10:29

  1320. chapter 10

  1321. verse 29,

  1322. Jesus says,

  1323. as recorded

  1324. by Matthew,

  1325. are not

  1326. two sparrows

  1327. sold for a

  1328. penny,

  1329. and not

  1330. one of

  1331. them will

  1332. fall to

  1333. the ground

  1334. apart from

  1335. your father.

  1336. So even

  1337. this very

  1338. cheap bird,

  1339. which would

  1340. have been

  1341. the poor

  1342. person's

  1343. sacrifice at

  1344. the temple,

  1345. two sparrows

  1346. sold for a

  1347. penny are

  1348. precious in

  1349. God's sight,

  1350. and yet we're

  1351. more precious

  1352. than those

  1353. two sparrows.

  1354. Luke,

  1355. however,

  1356. records the

  1357. same speaking

  1358. by Jesus.

  1359. in this

  1360. way,

  1361. Luke

    Luke 12:6

  1362. chapter 12

  1363. verse 6,

  1364. are not

  1365. five sparrows

  1366. sold for

  1367. two pennies,

  1368. and not

  1369. one of

  1370. them is

  1371. forgotten

  1372. before God.

  1373. So in

  1374. one text we

  1375. see that

  1376. two sparrows

  1377. are sold

  1378. for a

  1379. penny,

  1380. and in

  1381. another text

  1382. we've got

  1383. five for

  1384. two pennies,

  1385. which seems

  1386. to confuse

  1387. the price

  1388. of sparrows.

  1389. I suggest

  1390. to you

  1391. that if you

  1392. were a poor

  1393. person and

  1394. you went to

  1395. the temple

  1396. and you

  1397. bought four

  1398. for two

  1399. pennies,

  1400. they threw

  1401. in an odd

  1402. sparrow.

  1403. And beloved,

  1404. you and I

  1405. are the odd

  1406. sparrow.

  1407. God cares

  1408. for us.

  1409. So God

  1410. encourages the

  1411. souls of His

  1412. discouraged

  1413. servants with

  1414. new partners

  1415. and with

  1416. provision

  1417. coming by

  1418. the hand of

  1419. old partners.

  1420. And He also,

  1421. and most

  1422. importantly,

  1423. encourages the

  1424. souls of His

  1425. discouraged

  1426. servants with

  1427. His presence.

  1428. With His

  1429. presence.

  1430. Paul seems

  1431. to be so

  1432. discouraged at

  1433. this point that

  1434. God visits

  1435. him in a

  1436. vision.

  1437. In a very

  1438. special way,

  1439. he comes

  1440. alongside

  1441. Paul in a

  1442. vision in

  1443. verse 9.

  1444. And he says,

  1445. do not be

  1446. afraid, but

  1447. go on speaking

  1448. and do not

  1449. be silent,

  1450. why?

  1451. For I

  1452. am with

  1453. you.

  1454. For I am

  1455. with you.

  1456. Jesus made

  1457. this very

  1458. promise to

  1459. the apostles

  1460. in Matthew

    Matthew 28:18–20

  1461. chapter 28,

  1462. verses 18

  1463. through 20.

  1464. And Jesus

  1465. came and

  1466. said to

  1467. them,

  1468. all authority

  1469. in heaven and

  1470. on earth has

  1471. been given

  1472. to me.

  1473. Go therefore

  1474. and make

  1475. disciples of

  1476. all nations,

  1477. baptizing them

  1478. in the name

  1479. of the Father

  1480. and of the

  1481. Son and of the

  1482. Holy Spirit,

  1483. teaching them

  1484. to observe

  1485. all that I

  1486. have commanded

  1487. you.

  1488. There's the

  1489. great commission,

  1490. the command

  1491. given to all

  1492. followers of

  1493. Jesus Christ,

  1494. and he ends

  1495. it this way,

  1496. and behold,

  1497. I am with

  1498. you always

  1499. to the end

  1500. of the age.

  1501. And we do

  1502. not want to

  1503. forget that

  1504. that wonderful

  1505. promise at the

  1506. end of verse

  1507. 20 is coupled

  1508. with Jesus'

  1509. proclamation at

  1510. the beginning of

  1511. verse 18.

  1512. all authority

  1513. in heaven and

  1514. on earth has

  1515. been given

  1516. to me.

  1517. So we have

  1518. the all-powerful

  1519. ascended Jesus

  1520. Christ with

  1521. us always.

  1522. How is it that

  1523. God's presence

  1524. is with us?

  1525. Jesus, who is

  1526. God, says to

  1527. the apostles,

  1528. I am with you

  1529. always.

  1530. And to Paul,

  1531. for I am

  1532. with you.

  1533. And he says

  1534. the same to

  1535. all his people.

  1536. But how?

  1537. How?

  1538. How is this

  1539. accomplished?

  1540. Right?

  1541. How is the

  1542. presence of

  1543. Christ experienced

  1544. by his people?

  1545. In 2 Corinthians

  1546. 13-14, Paul

  1547. writes this to

  1548. the Corinthian

  1549. believers,

  1550. the grace of

  1551. the Lord Jesus

  1552. Christ and the

  1553. love of God

  1554. and the

  1555. fellowship of

  1556. the Holy Spirit

  1557. be with you

  1558. all.

  1559. This is a

  1560. classic

  1561. Trinitarian

  1562. text where we

  1563. see all of

  1564. the persons of

  1565. the Godhead

  1566. in a single

  1567. verse.

  1568. But today,

  1569. note the

  1570. phrase,

  1571. be with you.

  1572. How is it?

  1573. How is it

  1574. that all of

  1575. these aspects

  1576. of who God

  1577. is,

  1578. is with us?

  1579. It's by the

  1580. fellowship of

  1581. the Holy Spirit.

  1582. If you are a

  1583. follower of Jesus

  1584. Christ,

  1585. if you are

  1586. regenerate,

  1587. you are such

  1588. because the

  1589. very Spirit of

  1590. God dwells

  1591. within you.

  1592. and He uses

  1593. a tool to

  1594. accomplish His

  1595. purposes in

  1596. our life.

  1597. It's His

  1598. Word.

  1599. I cannot say

  1600. it to you

  1601. enough.

  1602. I will not

  1603. grow tired of

  1604. saying,

  1605. God's Word

  1606. is authoritative.

  1607. It's powerful.

  1608. It's inerrant.

  1609. It is sufficient

  1610. for our living.

  1611. We live in an

  1612. age where the

  1613. Word of God is

  1614. being altogether

  1615. thrown out.

  1616. I have met

  1617. across the past

  1618. couple of weeks

  1619. people who

  1620. profess to

  1621. follow Jesus

  1622. Christ who

  1623. have no

  1624. familiarity with

  1625. the Bible

  1626. whatsoever.

  1627. Just in

  1628. talking with

  1629. them about

  1630. what the

  1631. Gospel even

  1632. is.

  1633. Regular

  1634. attenders of

  1635. churches in

  1636. our area that

  1637. have no

  1638. idea.

  1639. I attended

  1640. a meeting of

  1641. our association

  1642. of churches

  1643. this past

  1644. week that

  1645. lasted three

  1646. and a half

  1647. hours and the

  1648. Bible was not

  1649. referenced once.

  1650. a group of

  1651. pastors,

  1652. me and the

  1653. Association of

  1654. Missionaries,

  1655. the only ones

  1656. with Bibles on

  1657. our table ready

  1658. to use them.

  1659. And as a note,

  1660. I didn't get a

  1661. chance.

  1662. I was asked to

  1663. pray so I packed

  1664. a lot of

  1665. scripture into my

  1666. prayer at the

  1667. end.

  1668. Altogether in

  1669. some cases,

  1670. just entirely

  1671. dismissed it.

  1672. But beloved,

  1673. if we want to

  1674. experience the

  1675. presence of God,

  1676. the Spirit of

  1677. God is with us

  1678. and He's going

  1679. to use the

  1680. Word to help

  1681. us to do

  1682. so.

  1683. And I hope

  1684. as a Christian

  1685. you have spent

  1686. time in God's

  1687. Word, that you

  1688. have been changed

  1689. by it and that

  1690. you have felt

  1691. that presence

  1692. in it.

  1693. God speaks to

  1694. me through

  1695. His Word.

  1696. As I take it

  1697. up and as I

  1698. read it, I see

  1699. and savor His

  1700. goodness.

  1701. He speaks

  1702. into me.

  1703. The Bible

  1704. reads me,

  1705. exposes my

  1706. sinfulness,

  1707. leads me in

  1708. obedience.

  1709. obedience.

  1710. I can be

  1711. close to

  1712. God because

  1713. I have

  1714. His Word.

  1715. Martin Lloyd

  1716. Jones said

  1717. this, and I

  1718. just wanted to

  1719. include, I

  1720. put this on

  1721. your bulletin,

  1722. Andy, thank

  1723. you for making

  1724. it fit, because

  1725. this is often

  1726. the way I feel

  1727. as I meet

  1728. with God in

  1729. His Word.

  1730. Analogy by

  1731. the great

  1732. Dr. Lloyd

  1733. Jones, a man

  1734. and his little

  1735. child are walking

  1736. down the road and

  1737. they are walking

  1738. hand in hand.

  1739. And the child

  1740. knows that he

  1741. is the child of

  1742. his father and

  1743. he knows that his

  1744. father loves him

  1745. and he rejoices in

  1746. that and he is

  1747. happy in it.

  1748. There is no

  1749. uncertainty about

  1750. it all, but

  1751. suddenly the

  1752. father, moved

  1753. by some impulse,

  1754. takes hold of

  1755. the child and

  1756. picks him up,

  1757. carries him in

  1758. his arm,

  1759. kisses him,

  1760. embraces him,

  1761. showers his love

  1762. upon him, and

  1763. then he puts

  1764. him down again

  1765. and they go on

  1766. walking together.

  1767. We need that

  1768. experience and

  1769. it is waiting for

  1770. us by the power

  1771. of the Spirit

  1772. in His Word.

  1773. Take it up and

  1774. read.

  1775. Whoever comes

  1776. and whoever

  1777. goes,

  1778. Jesus is with

  1779. us and Jesus

  1780. is enough.

  1781. God encourages

  1782. the souls of

  1783. His discouraged

  1784. servants with

  1785. new partners,

  1786. with provision,

  1787. with His

  1788. presence,

  1789. and with

  1790. protection.

  1791. In the same

  1792. vision,

  1793. middle part of

  1794. verse 10,

  1795. Jesus says

  1796. to Paul,

  1797. and no one

  1798. will attack you

  1799. to harm you.

  1800. Luke tells us

  1801. that Paul is

  1802. able to

  1803. minister for a

  1804. year and a

  1805. half without

  1806. harm, which is a

  1807. pretty astounding

  1808. thing in the

  1809. ministry of Paul.

  1810. That does not

  1811. mean that Paul

  1812. didn't experience

  1813. conflict.

  1814. He has set up

  1815. camp, and I love

  1816. that he did,

  1817. right next door to

  1818. the synagogue.

  1819. The Jews didn't

  1820. want to hear him

  1821. anymore.

  1822. He said,

  1823. I'm going to go

  1824. to the Gentiles,

  1825. and he went

  1826. right next door to

  1827. the synagogue

  1828. itself.

  1829. I am confident

  1830. that across this

  1831. year and a half,

  1832. people just didn't

  1833. go, yeah,

  1834. yeah, Paul,

  1835. let's ignore him

  1836. for a while.

  1837. They are still

  1838. upset at him,

  1839. but he does not

  1840. receive harm.

  1841. And Luke records

  1842. a specific conflict

  1843. for our benefit.

  1844. This story about

  1845. Galio and the

  1846. Jews bringing Paul

  1847. before Galio is

  1848. to make that

  1849. point.

  1850. Like, Jesus made

  1851. a promise to him

  1852. that he wouldn't

  1853. be harmed and

  1854. kept that promise,

  1855. and here's an

  1856. occasion that that

  1857. happened.

  1858. So, Galio was

  1859. the proconsul of

  1860. Achaia, young in

  1861. that position,

  1862. some have

  1863. supposed the

  1864. Jews made a

  1865. united attack on

  1866. Paul because

  1867. Galio was young.

  1868. They knew they

  1869. didn't have a

  1870. legitimate claim

  1871. against Paul,

  1872. and so they

  1873. thought that they

  1874. could wrap him

  1875. up in a power

  1876. trip and get him

  1877. to deliver some

  1878. kind of judgment

  1879. against Paul.

  1880. And the charge

  1881. they brought,

  1882. verse 13,

  1883. is this man is

  1884. persuading people

  1885. to worship God

  1886. contrary to the

  1887. law.

  1888. And other

  1889. times,

  1890. the trial

  1891. and execution

  1892. of our Lord

  1893. and Savior,

  1894. Rome got

  1895. involved in a

  1896. way Rome

  1897. should not

  1898. have gotten

  1899. involved.

  1900. But by God's

  1901. providence,

  1902. they did,

  1903. and in this

  1904. case,

  1905. by God's

  1906. providence,

  1907. they didn't.

  1908. Galio stayed

  1909. out of it.

  1910. If we're a

  1911. matter of

  1912. wrongdoing or

  1913. vicious crime,

  1914. oh Jews,

  1915. I would have

  1916. reason to

  1917. accept your

  1918. complaint.

  1919. But he

  1920. dismisses it

  1921. rather.

  1922. By God's

  1923. grace,

  1924. Galio issues

  1925. a summary

  1926. judgment and

  1927. just throws

  1928. the case

  1929. out.

  1930. From his

  1931. perspective,

  1932. the issue

  1933. was merely

  1934. an issue

  1935. of semantics.

  1936. Clearly

  1937. not.

  1938. Paul is

  1939. saying the

  1940. one way

  1941. to worship

  1942. the true

  1943. and living

  1944. God is

  1945. through the

  1946. personal work

  1947. of Jesus

  1948. Christ.

  1949. It wasn't

  1950. just a matter

  1951. of semantics,

  1952. but from

  1953. Galio's

  1954. perspective,

  1955. it was.

  1956. Eh,

  1957. the God

  1958. of the Jews.

  1959. Worship

  1960. him however

  1961. you want

  1962. to.

  1963. He viewed

  1964. their charge

  1965. as a

  1966. theological

  1967. debate and

  1968. not as a

  1969. matter of

  1970. judicial

  1971. concern.

  1972. I love

  1973. that Luke

  1974. records for

  1975. us as

  1976. Paul stands

  1977. trial so

  1978. many times.

  1979. We're going

  1980. to see a

  1981. lot of

  1982. Paul standing

  1983. trial in

  1984. the coming

  1985. chapters of

  1986. Acts.

  1987. But in

  1988. verse 14,

  1989. he says,

  1990. but when

  1991. Paul was

  1992. about to

  1993. open his

  1994. mouth,

  1995. he got

  1996. interrupted.

  1997. He didn't

  1998. have to

  1999. say anything

  2000. and the

  2001. charges were

  2002. dismissed.

  2003. Now,

  2004. does

  2005. following

  2006. Jesus Christ

  2007. mean that

  2008. we'll never

  2009. come to

  2010. any harm?

  2011. Absolutely

  2012. not.

  2013. Those who

  2014. desire to

  2015. live godly

  2016. in Christ

  2017. Jesus will

  2018. be persecuted

  2019. in some

  2020. measure.

  2021. People are

  2022. going to

  2023. dislike the

  2024. message of

  2025. Jesus Christ.

  2026. So,

  2027. Paul certainly

  2028. didn't avoid

  2029. harm in

  2030. other cases.

  2031. He had been

  2032. harmed up to

  2033. this point.

  2034. He will be

  2035. harmed beyond

  2036. this point.

  2037. But at

  2038. this time,

  2039. a way that

  2040. God encourages

  2041. him as he

  2042. protects him.

  2043. And we

  2044. can see

  2045. that as

  2046. the Jews

  2047. are very

  2048. unhappy

  2049. with this

  2050. dismissal

  2051. of the

  2052. charges that

  2053. they brought,

  2054. they turn,

  2055. and I think

  2056. it's right to

  2057. understand this,

  2058. we see they

  2059. all seized.

  2060. Driven from

  2061. the tribunal,

  2062. verse 17,

  2063. and they all

  2064. seized

  2065. Sosthenes.

  2066. They all

  2067. being those

  2068. Jews who

  2069. had brought

  2070. this united

  2071. charge against

  2072. Paul.

  2073. Sosthenes,

  2074. we find out

  2075. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:1

  2076. chapter 1,

  2077. verses 1 and

  2078. 2,

  2079. is a follower

  2080. of Jesus

  2081. Christ.

  2082. When Paul

  2083. wrote that

  2084. letter,

  2085. he says,

  2086. Paul,

  2087. called by the

  2088. will of God

  2089. to be an

  2090. apostle of

  2091. Christ Jesus

  2092. and our

  2093. brother

  2094. Sosthenes

  2095. to the

  2096. church of

  2097. God that

  2098. is in

  2099. Corinth.

  2100. So,

  2101. either

  2102. A,

  2103. Sosthenes

  2104. was already

  2105. a Christian,

  2106. right?

  2107. Much like

  2108. Crispus,

  2109. who was the

  2110. prior leader

  2111. of the synagogue,

  2112. had become a

  2113. believer with

  2114. all of his

  2115. family.

  2116. Sosthenes

  2117. could have

  2118. also been a

  2119. follower of

  2120. Christ and

  2121. still there

  2122. in charge.

  2123. He's already

  2124. a Christian

  2125. and he's

  2126. persecuted,

  2127. physically harmed

  2128. for his

  2129. faith.

  2130. Or,

  2131. I prefer the

  2132. first one,

  2133. so you know,

  2134. but,

  2135. or,

  2136. he made the

  2137. case against

  2138. Paul poorly.

  2139. He was the

  2140. representative.

  2141. He was the

  2142. DA in this

  2143. case.

  2144. And he made

  2145. the case against

  2146. Paul poorly.

  2147. And it was later

  2148. that he became a

  2149. Christian and they

  2150. were furious with

  2151. him because he

  2152. didn't make the

  2153. case well and

  2154. therefore they

  2155. beat him.

  2156. Point being,

  2157. whether or not

  2158. we escape

  2159. harm,

  2160. the promise

  2161. that God is

  2162. always in

  2163. loving control

  2164. remains true.

  2165. He is with

  2166. us.

  2167. He is in

  2168. control.

  2169. Romans 8,

  2170. 31,

  2171. what then shall

  2172. we say to

  2173. these things?

  2174. If God is

  2175. for us,

  2176. who can be

  2177. against us?

  2178. So,

  2179. we see this

  2180. protection.

  2181. We pick up a

  2182. little bit more

  2183. about that

  2184. protection and

  2185. what it meant

  2186. to Paul,

  2187. I believe,

  2188. by looking at

  2189. verse 18.

  2190. After this,

  2191. Paul stayed,

  2192. it's after this

  2193. trial,

  2194. Paul stayed

  2195. many days

  2196. longer and

  2197. then took

  2198. leave of the

  2199. brothers that

  2200. sailed for

  2201. Syria and

  2202. with him

  2203. Priscilla and

  2204. Aquila.

  2205. At

  2206. King

  2207. Cray,

  2208. not very far

  2209. away,

  2210. they landed.

  2211. He had cut

  2212. his hair

  2213. for he was

  2214. under a vow.

  2215. He shaved

  2216. his head

  2217. for he was

  2218. under a vow.

  2219. And this vow

  2220. would have

  2221. been a

  2222. Nazarite vow.

  2223. You can read

  2224. about this if

  2225. you're interested

  2226. in it from

  2227. Numbers 6.

  2228. And this

  2229. term Nazarite

  2230. comes from the

  2231. Hebrew word for

  2232. consecrated

  2233. or separated.

  2234. And Jews

  2235. made vows

  2236. to God

  2237. to thank

  2238. him for

  2239. past blessing

  2240. or to

  2241. petition him

  2242. for future

  2243. blessing.

  2244. I think in

  2245. this case

  2246. to thank

  2247. him.

  2248. He's now,

  2249. he's past

  2250. this year and

  2251. a half time,

  2252. he's past

  2253. this trial,

  2254. and he has

  2255. made a vow

  2256. in order to

  2257. thank God

  2258. for his

  2259. good pleasure

  2260. in staying

  2261. harm from

  2262. him.

  2263. The criteria

  2264. for a

  2265. Nazarite vow

  2266. were as

  2267. follows.

  2268. The person

  2269. who made a

  2270. vow had

  2271. to abstain

  2272. from alcohol,

  2273. vinegar,

  2274. or any food

  2275. with grapes

  2276. in it.

  2277. They had

  2278. to allow

  2279. their hair

  2280. to grow

  2281. until the

  2282. period of

  2283. time set

  2284. forth in

  2285. the vow

  2286. was complete,

  2287. so it

  2288. might be

  2289. 30 days,

  2290. it might

  2291. be 60

  2292. days,

  2293. but they

  2294. couldn't

  2295. cut their

  2296. hair during

  2297. that time.

  2298. Some of

  2299. you may be

  2300. familiar with

  2301. Samson.

  2302. Samson had

  2303. made a

  2304. lifelong vow,

  2305. and he

  2306. didn't do

  2307. any of these

  2308. things for

  2309. his lifespan.

  2310. Third,

  2311. they couldn't

  2312. be made

  2313. unclean by

  2314. exposure to

  2315. a dead

  2316. body.

  2317. Not really

  2318. important at

  2319. the time.

  2320. They had

  2321. to avoid

  2322. dead people

  2323. as well.

  2324. At the

  2325. completion of

  2326. the vow,

  2327. the head

  2328. was to be

  2329. shaved,

  2330. and a series

  2331. of offerings

  2332. were to be

  2333. made.

  2334. There were

  2335. three offerings

  2336. that were to

  2337. be made,

  2338. and one of

  2339. those offerings,

  2340. the peace

  2341. offering,

  2342. the hair was

  2343. to be placed

  2344. on the same

  2345. offering fire

  2346. and burnt.

  2347. This is the

  2348. prescription found

  2349. in Numbers

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  2350. chapter 6.

  2351. Now, the

  2352. exact nature

  2353. of Paul's

  2354. vow is

  2355. obscure,

  2356. but as I

  2357. said before,

  2358. I think it

  2359. was likely

  2360. made for

  2361. that past

  2362. protection.

  2363. It was a

  2364. way that

  2365. he was

  2366. being thankful

  2367. for what

  2368. God had

  2369. done for

  2370. him.

  2371. And Paul

  2372. did not

  2373. see his

  2374. adherence

  2375. to Jewish

  2376. tradition

  2377. in contradiction

  2378. with his

  2379. faith in

  2380. Jesus Christ,

  2381. but in

  2382. this case,

  2383. practiced

  2384. the spirit

  2385. of this

  2386. tradition

  2387. as a matter

  2388. of thanking

  2389. God for

  2390. what he

  2391. had done.

  2392. Now,

  2393. of interesting

  2394. note,

  2395. and to

  2396. that point,

  2397. a Nazarite

  2398. was meant

  2399. to break

  2400. the vow,

  2401. end the

  2402. vow,

  2403. by shaving

  2404. their head

  2405. at the

  2406. temple.

  2407. Paul's not

  2408. at the

  2409. temple in

  2410. Jerusalem,

  2411. is he?

  2412. He's a

  2413. long way

  2414. from the

  2415. temple in

  2416. Jerusalem.

  2417. Paul seems

  2418. to be more

  2419. concerned with

  2420. the timing

  2421. of his

  2422. completion of

  2423. the vow

  2424. than the

  2425. location of

  2426. the completion

  2427. of his

  2428. bow.

  2429. So he

  2430. shaves

  2431. his head

  2432. before going

  2433. to Jerusalem.

  2434. Now,

  2435. how do I

  2436. know that

  2437. he went

  2438. to Jerusalem?

  2439. Well,

  2440. I don't.

  2441. I think I

  2442. know he

  2443. went to

  2444. Jerusalem.

  2445. Verse 22,

  2446. Luke records

  2447. this,

  2448. when he

  2449. had landed

  2450. at Caesarea,

  2451. which is

  2452. north of

  2453. Jerusalem,

  2454. he went

  2455. up and

  2456. greeted the

  2457. church,

  2458. and then

  2459. went down

  2460. to Antioch.

  2461. And always

  2462. in this day,

  2463. Jerusalem was

  2464. always up,

  2465. and everything

  2466. else was

  2467. always down.

  2468. So he

  2469. went south

  2470. to Jerusalem,

  2471. and then

  2472. he went

  2473. north to

  2474. Antioch,

  2475. but Luke

  2476. would have

  2477. recorded it,

  2478. he went

  2479. up to

  2480. Jerusalem,

  2481. and he

  2482. went down

  2483. to Antioch.

  2484. So he

  2485. likely took

  2486. his hair

  2487. with him,

  2488. and went

  2489. through some

  2490. practice there

  2491. in Jerusalem.

  2492. So,

  2493. God

  2494. encouraged the

  2495. souls of

  2496. his discouraged

  2497. servants

  2498. with protection.

  2499. And I

  2500. just wonder

  2501. how often

  2502. we lose

  2503. sight of

  2504. God's good

  2505. favor upon

  2506. us,

  2507. and the

  2508. ways in

  2509. which he

  2510. keeps us

  2511. safe and

  2512. prevents harm

  2513. for us.

  2514. And finally,

  2515. God encourages

  2516. the souls of

  2517. his discouraged

  2518. servants with

  2519. purpose.

  2520. With purpose.

  2521. In verse

  2522. six,

  2523. you see a

  2524. very,

  2525. seemingly

  2526. very fruitless

  2527. ministry at

  2528. the synagogue.

  2529. They opposed

  2530. and they

  2531. reviled him.

  2532. And when

  2533. that happened,

  2534. he did

  2535. something that

  2536. he doesn't

  2537. do in most

  2538. of the

  2539. synagogues

  2540. he goes

  2541. to.

  2542. He shakes

  2543. out his

  2544. garments,

  2545. which was

  2546. a sign

  2547. of judgment.

  2548. It was a

  2549. way of

  2550. saying,

  2551. I don't

  2552. even want

  2553. the dirt

  2554. I picked

  2555. up in

  2556. your presence

  2557. to go

  2558. with me.

  2559. You have

  2560. heard the

  2561. gospel message

  2562. and you

  2563. have not

  2564. responded

  2565. in faith.

  2566. It was a

  2567. sign of

  2568. judgment.

  2569. And the

  2570. language he

  2571. uses is

  2572. very strong

  2573. to that end.

  2574. Your blood

  2575. be on your

  2576. own heads.

  2577. I am

  2578. innocent.

  2579. From now

  2580. on,

  2581. I will go

  2582. to the

  2583. Gentiles.

  2584. And he

  2585. doesn't

  2586. mean that

  2587. in an

  2588. absolute

  2589. sense.

  2590. We know

  2591. that Paul

  2592. is the

  2593. apostle to

  2594. the

  2595. Gentiles.

  2596. He still

  2597. will make

  2598. a habit

  2599. of going

  2600. into the

  2601. synagogue

  2602. and preaching

  2603. the gospel

  2604. to the

  2605. Jews.

  2606. But he

  2607. means there

  2608. in that

  2609. city and

  2610. we see

  2611. him go

  2612. next door

  2613. to the

  2614. house of

  2615. Titius

  2616. Justice.

  2617. So even

  2618. after declaring

  2619. judgment

  2620. against the

  2621. Jews,

  2622. Jews were

  2623. converted.

  2624. God still

  2625. had a

  2626. purpose.

  2627. We see

  2628. in verse

  2629. 8,

  2630. Crispus the

  2631. ruler of

  2632. the synagogue,

  2633. which must

  2634. have just

  2635. enraged

  2636. the Jews,

  2637. believed in

  2638. the Lord

  2639. together with

  2640. his entire

  2641. household.

  2642. And they've

  2643. been adding

  2644. more to

  2645. the number.

  2646. And many

  2647. of the

  2648. Corinthians

  2649. hearing Paul

  2650. believed and

  2651. they were

  2652. baptized.

  2653. The very

  2654. last part of

  2655. the vision

  2656. that Paul

  2657. sees,

  2658. Jesus says

  2659. to him,

  2660. I have

  2661. many in

  2662. this city

  2663. who are

  2664. my people.

  2665. So the

  2666. encouragement

  2667. that he

  2668. brings to

  2669. Paul is

  2670. this renewed

  2671. vigor for

  2672. his purpose.

  2673. God has

  2674. good purpose

  2675. to save

  2676. people.

  2677. And he

  2678. reminds Paul

  2679. of this by

  2680. saying,

  2681. keep going,

  2682. don't be

  2683. afraid,

  2684. preach the

  2685. good news

  2686. of Jesus

  2687. Christ because

  2688. I have

  2689. many in

  2690. the city

  2691. who are

  2692. my people.

  2693. People will

  2694. respond by

  2695. my intervention

  2696. to the good

  2697. news of

  2698. the gospel.

  2699. So Paul is

  2700. able to

  2701. say this.

  2702. He writes

  2703. to the

  2704. Corinthian

  2705. believers in

  2706. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:1–5

  2707. chapter 2

  2708. verses 1

  2709. through 5

  2710. which I

  2711. read to

  2712. you

  2713. verse 3

  2714. previously.

  2715. He says,

  2716. And when I

  2717. came to

  2718. you,

  2719. brothers,

  2720. did not

  2721. come

  2722. proclaiming

  2723. to you

  2724. the testimony

  2725. of God

  2726. with lofty

  2727. speech or

  2728. wisdom which

  2729. they loved.

  2730. For I

  2731. decided to

  2732. do nothing

  2733. among you

  2734. except Jesus

  2735. Christ and

  2736. him crucified.

  2737. And I

  2738. was with

  2739. you in

  2740. weakness

  2741. and in

  2742. fear and

  2743. much trembling.

  2744. And my

  2745. speech and

  2746. my message

  2747. were not

  2748. implausible

  2749. words of

  2750. wisdom but

  2751. in demonstration

  2752. of the spirit

  2753. and of power

  2754. so that your

  2755. faith may not

  2756. rest in the

  2757. wisdom of

  2758. men but in

  2759. the power

  2760. of God.

  2761. And that

  2762. purpose that

  2763. God has given

  2764. to each and

  2765. every one of

  2766. us ought to

  2767. encourage us

  2768. when we are

  2769. discouraged.

  2770. The point of

  2771. our lives and

  2772. certainly the

  2773. point of the

  2774. life of this

  2775. church is not

  2776. that we get

  2777. together and

  2778. huddle together.

  2779. Not that we

  2780. create a safe

  2781. environment for

  2782. all of us to

  2783. feel like we're

  2784. not quite so

  2785. weird in.

  2786. But that we

  2787. might gather

  2788. together to be

  2789. fueled and

  2790. equipped in

  2791. order that we

  2792. would go.

  2793. That's why we

  2794. come together.

  2795. And some of

  2796. us are going to

  2797. go back to

  2798. campus or to

  2799. a job or to

  2800. our neighbor.

  2801. Some of us are

  2802. going to go much

  2803. much further.

  2804. We should

  2805. praise God for

  2806. every mile that

  2807. he covers with

  2808. the good news of

  2809. Jesus Christ using

  2810. us.

  2811. Beloved, our

  2812. time is brief.

  2813. And Jesus

  2814. Christ is coming

  2815. back.

  2816. Let us not be

  2817. discouraged in our
