  1. Our main text will be in Acts 19, but I just want to reference the verse in Romans 1.

  2. So I'm really grateful for the singing this morning and for us praising the Lord together through song.

  3. ! The song I'd rather have Jesus definitely has a special meaning for me right now.

  4. It was a song I listened to a lot when I first became a Christian in the early 2000s.

  5. And the line of saying, like, I'd rather have Jesus than houses or land means a lot to me right now.

  6. I've been going through a house buying process.

  7. And just, yeah, some of you have done that notice how awful that can be and how sanctifying that can be.

  8. And, you know, and we're thankful for homes, thankful for places that we can live out kingdom life in.

  9. And there definitely is an obsession and idolatry in our nation when it comes to houses and throwing so much money, so much money into things.

  10. And I hope that your soul can say that, that I would rather have Jesus than anything that this world has to offer at all.

  11. And so, with that in mind, I'm looking at Romans 1.

  12. Really well-known verse, but I just want to use this verse as a lens to read over Acts 19.

  13. So, to be thinking about this verse as we go through Acts 19.

  14. So, well-known, but Romans 1 verse 16, Paul says,

    Romans 1:16

  15. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,

  16. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  17. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  18. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  19. And an overarching theme this morning is I just want to emphasize to you that the gospel is not just an important message or a powerful message.

  20. It's like the only, the most powerful message in the world.

  21. And it has the power to save dead and rebellious sinners and deliver them from their sin and from death to God,

  22. to raise the spiritually dead to life.

  23. I was just a minute to get out of curiosity.

  24. I just looked up this word, the word power here in this text.

  25. And verse 16, it's the word dynamis.

  26. So, that sounds like dynamite.

  27. Well, that's where some of the origin comes from.

  28. But listen to this.

  29. This word power, it means an inerrant power.

  30. A power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature,

  31. or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth.

  32. So, it means that the gospel itself possesses so much power that it doesn't need anything on the outside to help it.

  33. And in our culture, we've relied so much on gimmicks and ingenuity and theatrics and cool things to think that,

  34. and thinking that that's going to be what saves people.

  35. When all the same, you could have the worst speaker in the world come up here.

  36. And if he truly, genuinely knows Christ and is preaching the gospel message, God can use that.

  37. He doesn't have to be cool.

  38. He doesn't have to dress right.

  39. He doesn't have to be the most eloquent speaker.

  40. He doesn't have to have smoke and lights.

  41. He doesn't have to have anything.

  42. The power of the gospel is enough in and of itself and doesn't need any help.

  43. And so, keeping that in mind, let's turn to Acts 19.

  44. That's where our main text is.

  45. So, we've been going through the book of Acts, if you're new here.

  46. So, we've been in Acts for quite a while, and we're getting into chapter 19 now.

  47. Thank you for Caleb stepped in last week and preached for me because I was not feeling good and had a lot of other things going on as well.

  48. So, Paul has been in Europe, what we would call Europe now.

  49. And now, him going into Ephesus is kind of the launching place for the gospel going into Asia.

  50. And so, it's a really awesome, awesome text.

  51. So, the evangelism of Asia is here, and it kind of starts in the city of Ephesus.

  52. But just join me in prayer before we go through this together.

  53. Father, Holy Father, we recognize how unworthy we are.

  54. And God, we would all be like Peter if you approached us and said,

  55. Go away from me, Lord.

  56. I'm a sinful man.

  57. Not worthy to untie your sandals.

  58. God, I just ask that you would use me to communicate your word to your people.

  59. And if there are those here today who do not know the power of the gospel,

  60. the message of your Son, Jesus Christ, that you would work in their hearts today.

  61. It's for his name's sake we ask.

  62. In Christ's name, amen.

  63. So, we're going to pick up in the beginning of chapter 19.

  64. All right.

  65. Verse 1.

  66. And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth,

  67. Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus.

  68. There he found some disciples.

  69. And he said to them,

  70. Do you receive the Holy Spirit when you believe?

  71. And they said, No.

  72. We have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.

  73. And he said,

  74. Into what then were you baptized?

  75. And they said,

  76. Into John's baptism.

  77. And Paul said,

  78. John baptized with the baptism of repentance,

  79. telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him,

  80. that is, Jesus.

  81. On hearing this,

  82. they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  83. And when Paul had laid his hands on them,

  84. the Holy Spirit came on them,

  85. and then began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

  86. There were about 12 men in all.

  87. And then he entered the synagogue,

  88. and for three months spoke boldly,

  89. reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

  90. But when some became stubborn,

  91. and continued in unbelief,

  92. speaking evil of the way,

  93. before the congregation,

  94. he withdrew from them,

  95. and took the disciples with him.

  96. Reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.

  97. This continued for two years,

  98. so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord,

  99. both Jews and Greeks.

  100. And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,

  101. so that even the handkerchiefs or aprons that he touched,

  102. his skin,

  103. were carried away the sick,

  104. and their diseases left them,

  105. and the evil spirits came out of them.

  106. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists

  107. undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus

  108. over those who had evil spirits,

  109. saying,

  110. I adjure you by Jesus,

  111. whom Paul proclaims.

  112. Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Siva

  113. was doing this.

  114. But the evil spirit answered them,

  115. Jesus I know,

  116. and Paul I recognize,

  117. but who are you?

  118. And the man in whom the evil spirit leaped on them,

  119. mastered all of them,

  120. and overpowered them,

  121. so that they fled out of the house,

  122. naked and wounded.

  123. And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus,

  124. both Jews and Greeks,

  125. and fear fell upon them all,

  126. and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled.

  127. Also many of those who were now believers came,

  128. confessing and divulging their practices.

  129. A number of those who had practiced magic arts

  130. brought their books together

  131. and burned them in the sight of all.

  132. And they counted the value of them

  133. and found that it came to 50,000 pieces of silver.

  134. So the word of the Lord continued to increase

  135. and prevail mightily.

  136. So today,

  137. just by way of introduction,

  138. just kind of want to,

  139. we'll get more into,

  140. so if you keep reading,

  141. you see like if you have subtitles in your Bible,

  142. it says a riot and nephesis.

  143. We'll get to that next week.

  144. That's attached to this message though,

  145. so it'll be kind of going into next week.

  146. But just a little bit about the city of Ephesus.

  147. It's modern day Turkey

  148. on the east side of the Aegean Sea,

  149. and it was the capital of the Roman province of Asia.

  150. So that's where their headquarters were set up.

  151. That's where the governor of that territory was.

  152. Major port city.

  153. And it was the fifth largest city

  154. in all the Roman Empire,

  155. which at this time

  156. hadn't got as big as it would be,

  157. but it was really big already.

  158. And the big thing,

  159. and we'll talk about this more next week,

  160. not to get into all this now,

  161. but the big boast that they had

  162. was that they had the temple of Artemis,

  163. and that was also like the Roman goddess Diana.

  164. We'll talk more about all that next week.

  165. So if you like mythology,

  166. come back next week,

  167. and you'll see how Jesus kind of plays

  168. the trump card over mythology.

  169. But as we go through this today,

  170. there are going to be five lessons

  171. that we see,

  172. that we can learn from Paul

  173. in like sharing the gospel,

  174. and kind of compare that,

  175. line that up with like how

  176. it is in your own life,

  177. as well as,

  178. there are going to be intermingles,

  179. so don't think there's just going to be

  180. the big bullets of this message.

  181. All right,

  182. if this message had a title,

  183. it would be six ways

  184. the gospel impacts a culture.

  185. Okay,

  186. six ways that the gospel impacts a culture.

  187. All right,

  188. so number one,

  189. the gospel causes sinners to be saved.

  190. That's what we just read in Romans 1.

  191. The gospel causes sinners to be saved.

  192. Very clear explanation of this.

  193. We're going to walk through it

  194. like verse 1 through 7.

  195. So Paul comes into Ephesus,

  196. and he encounters some disciples

  197. of John the Baptist.

  198. Apollos was in Corinth at the time,

  199. and so he comes in

  200. and just kind of runs into these guys.

  201. And they had probably moved,

  202. relocated from Palestine

  203. or Judea to this region

  204. while John the Baptist had his ministry.

  205. So they probably left

  206. before Jesus came on the scene,

  207. most people believe.

  208. And it's interesting

  209. that John the Baptist

  210. had an influence that far,

  211. and his teaching

  212. had an influence that far.

  213. Apollos would be a great example of that.

  214. He had had the baptism of John

  215. and fully recognized

  216. that Jesus was the Messiah

  217. that John's testimony pointed to.

  218. He just needed

  219. a little further instruction.

  220. That's what Nathan taught on

  221. a few weeks ago.

  222. So these disciples

  223. basically had a lot of pieces

  224. of the puzzle with that

  225. and had the whole complete picture

  226. put together for them yet.

  227. So as followers of John,

  228. they would have known

  229. that John came to prepare

  230. the way of the Messiah.

  231. They would have known that,

  232. but they did not know

  233. that Jesus was that Messiah.

  234. So here's one of those little sub-things.

  235. Something you can learn from Paul

  236. in this text

  237. is that Paul initiates

  238. gospel conversation.

  239. Okay?

  240. So,

  241. I'm not going to downplay this

  242. because we're going to see

  243. another example in a minute,

  244. but most people

  245. in the church today,

  246. they are not proactive

  247. in actually talking to people

  248. about Christ.

  249. They're more reactive.

  250. They'll think,

  251. I'll just go about my day

  252. and if God just drops somebody

  253. in front of me,

  254. then I will just talk to them.

  255. Or they think,

  256. you know,

  257. I'll get a divine appointment,

  258. which is true.

  259. That's very true.

  260. But,

  261. I'm telling you that

  262. like the gospel and the kingdom

  263. will not be where it is

  264. if that's all we did.

  265. There are people

  266. who must go out

  267. and hunt down people

  268. to share Jesus with.

  269. And,

  270. so,

  271. this is one of those

  272. opportunities.

  273. He walks up,

  274. he sees these guys,

  275. and he just starts talking to them

  276. about their belief.

  277. He knew they were disciples of John.

  278. So,

  279. he kind of asked them,

  280. if you look at this,

  281. he uses very clear,

  282. look at verses 1 through 7,

  283. very clear,

  284. intentional questions

  285. to kind of draw out

  286. what they believe.

  287. It's that simple.

  288. He just said,

  289. did you receive the Holy Spirit

  290. when you believed?

  291. And to who were you baptized?

  292. And their answers

  293. just clearly revealed

  294. that they were not quite,

  295. I believe,

  296. not quite born again

  297. or saved yet.

  298. And the reasons why,

  299. there's two of them,

  300. they said they had not even heard

  301. of the Holy Spirit,

  302. even though John taught

  303. that Jesus would come

  304. and baptized with the Holy Spirit

  305. and with fire.

  306. They hadn't even heard

  307. of the Holy Spirit.

  308. And then,

  309. verse 4 reveals

  310. they didn't even know

  311. who Jesus was.

  312. So,

  313. but what's awesome,

  314. though,

  315. is Paul recognized

  316. from his viewpoint

  317. that John's legacy,

  318. John's teaching,

  319. had helped them recognize

  320. what they had missed.

  321. And so,

  322. he basically just filled in

  323. the missing pieces

  324. of the puzzle for them.

  325. So,

  326. they were in a very,

  327. very unique state

  328. in redemptive history,

  329. very similar to,

  330. like,

  331. an Old Testament believer

  332. kind of waiting

  333. for the Messiah to come.

  334. So,

  335. he basically is like,

  336. oh,

  337. okay,

  338. I got you.

  339. Got you.

  340. John came to tell you

  341. to turn away from your sins

  342. and to prepare the way

  343. of the Savior.

  344. He was the voice

  345. of the one crying

  346. in the wilderness,

  347. prepare the way

  348. of the Lord.

  349. Well,

  350. the Lord came.

  351. His name was Jesus

  352. of Nazareth.

  353. He lived,

  354. He loved,

  355. He died on the cross,

  356. He was resurrected.

  357. He is the Messiah.

  358. And so,

  359. they gladly received that

  360. and were baptized

  361. into the name

  362. of the Lord Jesus.

  363. And,

  364. the result of that

  365. is they began speaking

  366. in tongues

  367. and prophesying.

  368. That's not a message

  369. about this today.

  370. But,

  371. but,

  372. very clearly,

  373. it is done,

  374. I believe,

  375. in this text

  376. as an outward

  377. demonstration

  378. and verification

  379. of giving Paul

  380. like a dramatic way

  381. to enter Ephesus.

  382. Because as we're going

  383. to read,

  384. there's a lot

  385. of like supernatural

  386. dark things

  387. going on.

  388. And for him

  389. to kind of come

  390. and show

  391. in a very visible way

  392. that the Savior

  393. who he represented

  394. was powerful

  395. was very important

  396. at the time.

  397. And so,

  398. these men

  399. had deep roots

  400. in the Old Testament

  401. scriptures.

  402. And so,

  403. very clearly,

  404. it meant a lot

  405. to them

  406. to hear that prophecy

  407. out of Joel 2,

  408. I think,

  409. fulfilled.

  410. So,

  411. they were born again.

  412. They were saved

  413. right there.

  414. So,

  415. we saw that Paul

  416. initiated gospel

  417. conversation.

  418. Excuse me.

  419. Which leads to

  420. the second thing.

  421. Alright,

  422. the gospel

  423. causes sinners

  424. to be hardened.

  425. Alright?

  426. See that in verses

  427. 8 through 10.

  428. So,

  429. right after that,

  430. he went into

  431. the synagogue.

  432. So,

  433. he happened up

  434. on these first guys.

  435. It just kind of happened.

  436. So,

  437. it was the

  438. unintentional encounter

  439. that he had

  440. with John's disciples.

  441. But now,

  442. he very intentionally

  443. goes into the synagogue,

  444. which,

  445. again,

  446. he initiates

  447. gospel conversation.

  448. And,

  449. it's almost like

  450. a seek and destroy

  451. mission.

  452. He,

  453. he sought out

  454. the lost people

  455. to allow the power

  456. of God

  457. to destroy

  458. the sin

  459. of their life.

  460. And so,

  461. he went,

  462. as was his way,

  463. he went into

  464. the synagogue

  465. to engage

  466. with the people there

  467. who understood

  468. someone of the scriptures.

  469. So,

  470. here's some other

  471. things we can observe

  472. about the way

  473. Paul engaged

  474. in this text

  475. right here.

  476. If you look

  477. at these verses,

  478. verses 8 through 10,

  479. just ask yourself

  480. the question,

  481. how did he speak

  482. about the gospel?

  483. Do you see him

  484. like using

  485. emotional manipulation

  486. or theatrics?

  487. It just says,

  488. Paul spoke

  489. the gospel boldly.

  490. All right?

  491. He spoke

  492. the gospel boldly

  493. about the things

  494. concerning the Messiah,

  495. the one that met him

  496. on the road to Damascus

  497. and saved him

  498. from his sins.

  499. And this idea

  500. to speak boldly

  501. means

  502. to speak freely,

  503. to speak confidently,

  504. to speak with full assurance

  505. about what you were saying.

  506. Think about,

  507. like,

  508. how you talk about

  509. the Savior.

  510. Does it carry

  511. that kind of confidence?

  512. Like,

  513. I know

  514. in whom

  515. I believed.

  516. could you

  517. just think about,

  518. those of you

  519. who are married,

  520. think about

  521. the confidence

  522. you can speak of

  523. about your spouse,

  524. how they are yours,

  525. that they belong to you.

  526. And just think,

  527. can I speak

  528. with the same kind

  529. of boldness

  530. about the gospel?

  531. So,

  532. he wasn't unsure

  533. or timid.

  534. He didn't come across

  535. uncertain or doubtful.

  536. He was sure

  537. about the Messiah

  538. he spoke about.

  539. So,

  540. Paul spoke

  541. the gospel boldly.

  542. And another thing

  543. to note under this

  544. is that Paul

  545. spoke the gospel

  546. persuasively.

  547. Okay?

  548. Paul,

  549. it says here,

  550. was reasoning

  551. and persuading them

  552. about the kingdom

  553. of God.

  554. So,

  555. again,

  556. unfortunately,

  557. a lot of churches

  558. and ministries

  559. have used emotional

  560. manipulation

  561. to invoke

  562. a certain response

  563. from people.

  564. I'm not even

  565. a musician

  566. and I know this.

  567. I mean,

  568. I'm not a musician,

  569. you know.

  570. You can play

  571. certain musical keys

  572. to invoke

  573. certain emotional

  574. responses in people.

  575. So,

  576. are what people

  577. are experiencing

  578. actually real?

  579. Is it like

  580. the work of God

  581. or is it just

  582. an emotional

  583. manipulation?

  584. And usually,

  585. like 15 minutes

  586. after that service

  587. is over,

  588. you can tell

  589. which one it was

  590. by what people

  591. were doing

  592. and what they're

  593. talking about.

  594. And how they

  595. lived their lives

  596. outside of that.

  597. And so,

  598. what we see

  599. is in reasoning

  600. persuading,

  601. right?

  602. The genuine

  603. gospel evangelism,

  604. it's a call

  605. to persuade people

  606. to Christ.

  607. So,

  608. to be persuaded

  609. is not to be deceived.

  610. It's the opposite.

  611. You're convinced.

  612. Like,

  613. you show them

  614. the evidence,

  615. you talk about it,

  616. here it is,

  617. this is Jesus,

  618. and they,

  619. the Lord uses that

  620. through His Holy Spirit

  621. to convince them.

  622. They are persuaded

  623. to follow Christ.

  624. So,

  625. throughout the book

  626. of Acts,

  627. you see that idea

  628. of preaching,

  629. teaching,

  630. persuading people

  631. to believe.

  632. It's an appeal

  633. to their mind.

  634. It changes

  635. their disposition,

  636. and that's why

  637. they believe.

  638. Hold your hand there.

  639. I don't have many places

  640. for you to look at it all,

  641. outside our main text,

  642. but look at Acts 17,

  643. just two chapters back.

  644. Just to kind of show you

  645. this is a theme

  646. in Acts.

  647. So,

  648. he's in Thessalonica

  649. in Greece,

  650. and look at

  651. chapter 17,

  652. verse 1 through 4,

  653. and just jump ahead.

  654. It says,

  655. on three Sabbath days

  656. he reasoned with them

  657. from the Scriptures.

  658. Alright?

  659. So,

  660. that was his authority.

  661. He wasn't using

  662. his own opinions

  663. or his own ideas.

  664. He was using

  665. the Scripture,

  666. explaining

  667. and proving

  668. that it was necessary

  669. for the Christ

  670. to suffer

  671. and to rise

  672. from the dead,

  673. and saying,

  674. this Jesus

  675. whom I proclaim

  676. to you

  677. is the Christ.

  678. And some of them

  679. were persuaded

  680. and joined Paul

  681. and Silas,

  682. as did a great many

  683. of devout Greeks

  684. and not a few

  685. of the leading women.

  686. So,

  687. you kind of see

  688. this as a theme.

  689. He's reasoning.

  690. He's persuading.

  691. Shilling people

  692. who Jesus is.

  693. And God uses that

  694. to draw them

  695. to himself.

  696. So,

  697. those are

  698. awesome words.

  699. So,

  700. just to throw this

  701. out there,

  702. there are certain people,

  703. I think spiritual gifts

  704. are a good thing.

  705. I think they're

  706. a biblical thing.

  707. But I feel like

  708. the church

  709. is just extremely

  710. erred in the terms

  711. of,

  712. I don't have the gift

  713. of evangelism,

  714. so I'm not

  715. going to share.

  716. as

  717. nowhere in the Bible.

  718. You're called

  719. to share

  720. with the ability

  721. that God

  722. has given you

  723. to share.

  724. Right?

  725. You may not be.

  726. There are some people

  727. that are very

  728. gifted by God

  729. to communicate

  730. the truth,

  731. to communicate

  732. the gospel,

  733. but that doesn't

  734. mean that the rest

  735. of us

  736. should just sit back.

  737. We all are

  738. heralds of the gospel.

  739. Alright?

  740. And,

  741. this is

  742. a great example

  743. of that.

  744. Reasoning,

  745. explaining,

  746. proving,

  747. persuading.

  748. Okay?

  749. So,

  750. I also want to tell you

  751. that persuasion

  752. takes,

  753. it's more of an art

  754. instead of a gimmick

  755. or a method.

  756. Okay?

  757. So,

  758. it's more like

  759. something like

  760. fly fishing

  761. or painting.

  762. You practice

  763. and you get better

  764. and better

  765. and better at it.

  766. You can't,

  767. I think we have

  768. such an attraction

  769. in our culture

  770. to five-step things

  771. and just show me

  772. the method

  773. and I will apply

  774. this method

  775. to every situation.

  776. You know,

  777. those of you

  778. who are really engaged

  779. in serious evangelism

  780. know that just

  781. doesn't work.

  782. Can you sit down,

  783. please,

  784. while you're drinking

  785. your cocktail

  786. on the beach

  787. while I share

  788. five things with you

  789. and most of the time

  790. they don't even make it

  791. past the second thing.

  792. If you notice,

  793. Jesus never spoke

  794. to people

  795. the same way.

  796. You ever notice that?

  797. Like he always had,

  798. he applied the context

  799. of the gospel

  800. to the situation

  801. that he was in

  802. at the time.

  803. So,

  804. it takes time,

  805. it takes practice

  806. to be able to learn

  807. to talk about

  808. Christ.

  809. So,

  810. exercise those muscles.

  811. Ask him

  812. to help you.

  813. And so,

  814. it's more of an art

  815. and not a method.

  816. Kind of throw that

  817. out there.

  818. Alright?

  819. So,

  820. something else

  821. we can learn

  822. just from this

  823. few verses

  824. about

  825. the way

  826. Paul shared

  827. the gospel.

  828. And this is a big one.

  829. I think this was

  830. definitely lacking

  831. in the American church.

  832. Paul persevered

  833. in gospel ministry.

  834. That's it.

  835. Paul persevered

  836. in gospel ministry.

  837. Most of us

  838. go give it a shot

  839. and if we get shot down

  840. we don't want to go back out.

  841. And we think,

  842. you know,

  843. I tried

  844. and it didn't work.

  845. You know,

  846. we have to build up

  847. some thicker skin.

  848. We have to

  849. understand

  850. that winning people

  851. takes time

  852. to knock down

  853. all the walls

  854. in their heart.

  855. There are some people

  856. that come to know

  857. Christ really quickly.

  858. Others,

  859. it's just a

  860. constant battering

  861. at their sin,

  862. the idols in their life

  863. and eventually

  864. they are saved.

  865. But just notice

  866. that

  867. it says that

  868. Paul reasoned

  869. and shared Christ

  870. in the synagogue

  871. for three months.

  872. Alright?

  873. And then

  874. he did it daily

  875. in the hall of Tyrannus.

  876. He said it continued

  877. for two years.

  878. That's a lot of

  879. teaching,

  880. reasoning,

  881. and explaining.

  882. He said he did it daily.

  883. He said that

  884. all the residents

  885. of Asia

  886. heard the word

  887. of the Lord,

  888. both Jews and Greeks.

  889. But as this

  890. bullet says,

  891. some are hardened.

  892. Okay?

  893. And that's what we read

  894. that some of these

  895. men in the synagogue

  896. were hardened.

  897. Don't bring

  898. that junk in here.

  899. We don't want to hear it.

  900. It's against

  901. everything we've ever

  902. been taught.

  903. And so,

  904. the gospel can say,

  905. but the opposite effect

  906. is it can harden.

  907. Men love darkness

  908. rather than the light.

  909. So,

  910. when I think about

  911. perseverance,

  912. I think of

  913. a hero of mine.

  914. His picture's in my

  915. study down there.

  916. Some of you may know

  917. who he is,

  918. but his name was,

  919. funny last name,

  920. William Wilberforce.

  921. And he was a

  922. British

  923. parliamentarian

  924. in the late

  925. 1700s,

  926. early 1800s.

  927. Young guy.

  928. was best friends

  929. with the prime minister.

  930. It was William Pitt.

  931. But,

  932. on October

  933. 28th,

  934. 1787,

  935. he

  936. dedicated his life

  937. to two goals.

  938. He says,

  939. God Almighty

  940. has set before me

  941. two great objects,

  942. the suppression

  943. of the slave trade

  944. and the reformation

  945. of morals.

  946. So,

  947. he had not been

  948. a believer

  949. for a long time

  950. and then he came

  951. to know Christ

  952. right at the height

  953. of his political

  954. popularity,

  955. which any politician

  956. would know.

  957. That's like a big deal

  958. because like,

  959. now I've got to turn around

  960. and tell everybody else

  961. the opposite thing.

  962. So,

  963. he was really feeling

  964. the weight of that

  965. and he hated,

  966. appalled,

  967. the slave trade.

  968. Cool enough,

  969. his pastor

  970. was John Newton,

  971. the guy who wrote

  972. Amazing Grace

  973. and a man who was

  974. a slave trader

  975. before he became

  976. a Christian.

  977. And,

  978. so Newton encouraged him,

  979. take it out,

  980. attack it,

  981. God be with you,

  982. you know,

  983. I'm here.

  984. And,

  985. so,

  986. the slave trade

  987. and the reformation

  988. of morals

  989. in the British society,

  990. none of those

  991. were going to be

  992. accomplished

  993. in a quick speech.

  994. None of them.

  995. He knew it would

  996. take years

  997. and years.

  998. John Wesley

  999. wrote to him

  1000. in 1790

1001. and listen to what he said,

  1002. unless God

  1003. has raised you up

  1004. for this very thing,

1005. you will be worn out

  1006. by the opposition

  1007. of man

  1008. and of devils.

  1009. But if God

  1010. be with you,

1011. who can be against you?

  1012. So like,

  1013. you're going to fail.

  1014. Like,

1015. if this is a mission

  1016. you're going to undertake

  1017. on your own,

1018. if God hasn't raised you up

  1019. for this,

  1020. then you're going

  1021. to be burned out.

  1022. So,

  1023. just think about it.

  1024. Walking into

  1025. a place like Congress.

  1026. So,

  1027. how many of you

  1028. are actually aware

  1029. of like,

  1030. you ever watch

  1031. like a British

  1032. Parliament thing

  1033. on TV?

  1034. It is nothing

  1035. like ours at all.

  1036. Like,

  1037. they make fun

  1038. of each other,

  1039. like severe sarcasm.

  1040. They make fun

  1041. of the highest office.

  1042. It's like a comedy show

  1043. sometimes.

  1044. So,

  1045. there's not that

  1046. respect.

  1047. Sometimes we might

  1048. see in ours,

  1049. but ours could be

  1050. going that way.

  1051. But anyways,

1052. so when he went in there

  1053. the first time,

  1054. can you imagine this?

  1055. Like,

  1056. hundreds of men

  1057. sitting in this room

  1058. and probably 70%

  1059. of them have some

  1060. involvement in the

  1061. slave trade.

  1062. And then they're

  1063. standing up and

  1064. saying like,

  1065. I want to propose

1066. that we make a motion

1067. to end the slave trade.

  1068. Like,

  1069. the outrage

  1070. that came out.

  1071. So,

  1072. he knew that wasn't

  1073. going to come down

  1074. in one speech.

  1075. He knew it was

  1076. going to take years

  1077. and years to bring

  1078. it down.

  1079. So,

  1080. what he learned

  1081. about perseverance,

  1082. he wrote this

  1083. in a letter.

  1084. He says,

  1085. I daily

  1086. become more sensible

  1087. that my work

  1088. must be affected

  1089. by a constant

  1090. and regular

  1091. exertions

  1092. rather than

  1093. by sudden

  1094. and violent

  1095. ones.

  1096. In other words,

  1097. he understood

  1098. that if this

  1099. was going to happen,

  1100. it was going to

  1101. be a marathon run

  1102. and not a sprint.

  1103. And we have to

  1104. think of

  1105. sharing the gospel

  1106. that way.

  1107. It's a battle.

  1108. So,

  1109. I mentioned

  1110. Cody Klikner

  1111. a little while ago.

  1112. So,

  1113. when you see him

  1114. congratulating,

  1115. they won their

  1116. conference,

  1117. and now they're

  1118. going and playing

  1119. to some other

  1120. big things in the

  1121. nation.

  1122. And Cody really

  1123. seeks to live out

  1124. gospel life

  1125. on the baseball

  1126. team.

  1127. Very few people

  1128. who do that.

  1129. but,

  1130. so we were,

  1131. I did a lot

  1132. of ministry

  1133. with the

  1134. baseball team.

  1135. And there

  1136. was one year,

  1137. man,

  1138. we were just

  1139. shot down

  1140. and shot down

  1141. and shot down

  1142. like nothing

  1143. we did

  1144. was working.

  1145. And every week

  1146. we just renewed

  1147. our strength

  1148. in the Lord.

  1149. And finally,

  1150. we were able

  1151. to put together

  1152. an evangelistic

  1153. Bible study

  1154. after it was

  1155. just shot down

  1156. multiple times.

  1157. Guys didn't

  1158. show up.

  1159. We were like,

  1160. you know,

  1161. order food,

  1162. show up,

  1163. and like 15

  1164. guys said

  1165. they were going

  1166. to be there

  1167. and like two

  1168. were there.

  1169. That happened

  1170. multiple times.

  1171. You just got

  1172. to remember

  1173. like they're

  1174. going to resist

  1175. and they're

  1176. going to be

  1177. hard-headed

  1178. and they're

  1179. going to be

  1180. stubborn.

  1181. But God,

  1182. the power of

  1183. the gospel,

  1184. can draw them

  1185. to himself

  1186. when he's ready.

  1187. And he did.

  1188. And several

  1189. guys came to

  1190. know the Lord

  1191. that year

  1192. through the

  1193. teaching of the

  1194. word.

  1195. So we have

  1196. to keep with

  1197. it.

  1198. We can't just

  1199. be upset

  1200. and run

  1201. away with

  1202. our tail

  1203. between our

  1204. legs every

  1205. time something

  1206. doesn't work

  1207. out.

  1208. Paul taught

  1209. two years,

  1210. almost daily,

  1211. to get to

  1212. where all the

  1213. residents of

  1214. Asia have

  1215. heard the

  1216. word.

  1217. So persevere

  1218. in gospel

  1219. ministry.

  1220. So I should

  1221. tell you that

  1222. Wilberforce,

  1223. he started

  1224. that battle

  1225. in 1787.

  1226. Or excuse me,

  1227. I flipped it

  1228. over the wrong

  1229. time.

  1230. Yeah,

  1231. 1787.

  1232. 1787.

  1233. So on

  1234. February

  1235. 1807,

  1236. so nearly

  1237. 20 years

  1238. later,

  1239. the slave

  1240. trade was

  1241. taken down

  1242. at 4 a.m.

  1243. in the

  1244. morning.

  1245. That's 20

  1246. years of

  1247. constant

  1248. slander,

  1249. being attacked.

  1250. And he saw

  1251. it as a

  1252. work of God,

  1253. a work of

  1254. the gospel,

  1255. not as

  1256. just political

  1257. change.

  1258. So such

  1259. is gospel

  1260. evangelism.

  1261. We have

  1262. to persevere.

  1263. Number

  1264. three,

  1265. the gospel

  1266. causes

  1267. miraculous

  1268. acts.

  1269. Verse 11

  1270. through 12.

  1271. So a

  1272. good while

  1273. back,

  1274. I did a

  1275. message on

  1276. things like

  1277. this.

  1278. You can

  1279. go back

  1280. and look

  1281. it up

  1282. later.

  1283. But

  1284. miracles

  1285. and acts,

  1286. healings,

  1287. they're usually

  1288. a means for

  1289. God to open

  1290. the door,

  1291. to get the

  1292. attention of

  1293. people in

  1294. these contexts,

  1295. to show

  1296. that Jesus

  1297. is the

  1298. Christ,

  1299. and to

  1300. confirm the

  1301. messenger,

  1302. that he is

  1303. being used

  1304. by God.

  1305. And in the

  1306. last message

  1307. that I said,

  1308. does stuff

  1309. like this

  1310. still happen?

  1311. Absolutely.

  1312. Why don't

  1313. we see more

  1314. of it in our

  1315. culture?

  1316. Either we're

  1317. not looking,

  1318. or I also

  1319. believe the

  1320. greatest barrier

  1321. to people in

  1322. the West or

  1323. in America is

  1324. more ideologies

  1325. and wrong

  1326. thinking and

  1327. secular humanism.

  1328. That's where

  1329. if you go

  1330. to a place

  1331. like the

  1332. jungle,

  1333. or I

  1334. have a good

  1335. friend of

  1336. mine from

  1337. India,

  1338. his nickname

  1339. is Jojo,

  1340. that's what I

  1341. call him.

  1342. He has

  1343. literally long

  1344. beard and

  1345. dreadlocks and

  1346. he has a

  1347. ministry in

  1348. Delhi,

  1349. and he sees

  1350. a lot of

  1351. this.

  1352. Well,

  1353. that is where

  1354. people are

  1355. oppressed

  1356. in a spiritual

  1357. way that does

  1358. come out in a

  1359. demonic fashion.

  1360. and so

  1361. Paul was

  1362. going around

  1363. healing people

  1364. and God was

  1365. validating that

  1366. message that he

  1367. was the messenger

  1368. sent by God.

  1369. And the whole

  1370. handkerchief,

  1371. apron thing,

  1372. there's a very

  1373. constant belief in

  1374. the ancient East

  1375. that objects

  1376. associated with

  1377. holy people

  1378. had power,

  1379. power,

  1380. but really

  1381. the idea is

  1382. like God

  1383. saw fit to

  1384. give Paul

  1385. an extra

  1386. measure of

  1387. power,

  1388. that the

  1389. faith of,

  1390. it's like

  1391. touching Jesus

  1392. to him in

  1393. his garment.

  1394. Jesus' garment

  1395. didn't heal the

  1396. guy,

  1397. Jesus did.

  1398. It's the same

  1399. kind of concept.

  1400. So it wasn't

  1401. these were

  1402. magical objects,

  1403. but rather

  1404. God saw

  1405. please to

  1406. manifest his

  1407. power so

  1408. intensely through

  1409. what Paul is

  1410. doing.

  1411. This happened

  1412. at Cyprus

  1413. and at

  1414. Philippi,

  1415. previously in

  1416. Acts.

  1417. So,

  1418. another

  1419. observation

  1420. about Paul

  1421. here was

  1422. Paul was a

  1423. yielded vessel

  1424. for the

  1425. gospel,

  1426. okay?

  1427. He allowed

  1428. himself to

  1429. be used

  1430. by God.

  1431. He yielded

  1432. to the power

  1433. of the Holy

  1434. Spirit.

  1435. He had no

  1436. ability in

  1437. himself to

  1438. save or

  1439. heal anyone.

  1440. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:7

  1441. 3,

  1442. verse 7,

  1443. Paul said

  1444. this,

  1445. writing later

  1446. on to the

  1447. church that

  1448. was planted

  1449. here.

  1450. He says,

  1451. of this

  1452. gospel I

  1453. was made

  1454. a minister

  1455. according to

  1456. the gift

  1457. of God's

  1458. grace,

  1459. which was

  1460. given me

  1461. by the

  1462. working of

  1463. his power

  1464. to me

  1465. through who I

  1466. am the

  1467. very least

  1468. of the

  1469. saints.

  1470. So,

  1471. I'm no one

  1472. special.

  1473. This grace

  1474. was given

  1475. to preach

  1476. to the

  1477. Gentiles

  1478. the

  1479. unsearchable

  1480. riches

  1481. of Christ.

  1482. So,

  1483. you don't

  1484. have to be

  1485. special.

  1486. You don't

  1487. have to

  1488. have a

  1489. seminary

  1490. degree.

  1491. You just

  1492. need to

  1493. know the

  1494. scripture,

  1495. know the

  1496. Savior,

  1497. know the

  1498. gospel,

  1499. in order

  1500. for God

  1501. to use

  1502. you.

  1503. Be a

  1504. yielded

  1505. vessel for

  1506. the gospel.

  1507. Number

  1508. four,

  1509. the gospel

  1510. causes false

  1511. teachers to

  1512. be exposed.

  1513. This is one

  1514. of those stories

  1515. that is like

  1516. definitely

  1517. rattled the

  1518. cage.

  1519. Verse 13

  1520. through 16,

  1521. we see that

  1522. there were

  1523. some itinerant

  1524. Jewish

  1525. exorcists,

  1526. right,

  1527. who were

  1528. around

  1529. Ephesus.

  1530. And there's

  1531. a lot of

  1532. history and

  1533. ancient records

  1534. that kind of

  1535. give people

  1536. ceremonies and

  1537. rituals and

  1538. formulas to

  1539. cast out

  1540. evil spirits.

  1541. And they

  1542. would collect

  1543. them in

  1544. books and

  1545. sell those

  1546. books.

  1547. And so,

  1548. even for the

  1549. Jews in this

  1550. time, in the

  1551. first century,

  1552. there was a

  1553. lot of these

  1554. kind of spells

  1555. and there was

  1556. a lot of

  1557. demonic activity

  1558. and they

  1559. would try to

  1560. use their

  1561. words to

  1562. get rid of

  1563. these evil

  1564. spirits.

  1565. So,

  1566. Jesus was

  1567. able to

  1568. cast out

  1569. demons by

  1570. the power

  1571. and authority

  1572. that he

  1573. had.

  1574. We all

  1575. know that.

  1576. And he

  1577. gave that

  1578. same authority

  1579. to his

  1580. disciples,

  1581. his apostles.

  1582. So,

  1583. in a very

  1584. pragmatic

  1585. matter,

  1586. you know,

  1587. these guys

  1588. are watching

  1589. Paul do

  1590. this with

  1591. the real

  1592. power of

  1593. Christ and

  1594. they say,

  1595. hmm,

  1596. Jesus Christ.

  1597. Maybe that's

  1598. another word

  1599. or name I

  1600. can throw

  1601. into my

  1602. formula book.

  1603. To practice

  1604. the same

  1605. kind of

  1606. thing,

  1607. that'd

  1608. be kind

  1609. of cool.

  1610. So,

  1611. they go

  1612. out and

  1613. try this

  1614. and they

  1615. just get

  1616. it handed

  1617. to them

  1618. severely.

  1619. So,

  1620. why didn't

  1621. it work

  1622. for them?

  1623. Okay?

  1624. Well,

  1625. number one,

  1626. these,

  1627. they failed

  1628. to know

  1629. the Savior

  1630. himself.

  1631. Okay?

  1632. If you're

  1633. going to

  1634. invoke

  1635. somebody's

  1636. authority,

  1637. you have

  1638. to know

  1639. that person.

  1640. You have

  1641. to have

  1642. a relationship

  1643. with that

  1644. person.

  1645. It can't

  1646. just be

  1647. a magical

  1648. word that

  1649. you just

  1650. kind of

  1651. throw out

  1652. there.

  1653. Example,

  1654. if you

  1655. were coming

  1656. from Caesar

  1657. in this

  1658. day as a

  1659. messenger and

  1660. you evoked

  1661. his authority,

  1662. that carried

  1663. a lot of

  1664. power with it.

  1665. Right?

  1666. But,

  1667. if you

  1668. did not,

  1669. if you

  1670. were a

  1671. false

  1672. messenger,

  1673. it could

  1674. cost you

  1675. your life.

  1676. So,

  1677. the power

  1678. of someone's

  1679. name carries

  1680. authority,

  1681. but only as

  1682. far as that

  1683. relationship is

  1684. there.

  1685. So,

  1686. these

  1687. chance to

  1688. get rid of

  1689. evil spirits

  1690. did not

  1691. work.

  1692. And,

  1693. they were

  1694. stripped

  1695. naked,

  1696. and they

  1697. ran away.

  1698. That was a

  1699. great picture

  1700. of shame

  1701. and humiliation,

  1702. and that

  1703. scared the

  1704. blank out

  1705. of the

  1706. people in

  1707. Ephesus.

  1708. Because,

  1709. they were

  1710. like,

  1711. wow,

  1712. these guys

  1713. were at

  1714. the top

  1715. of our

  1716. school here,

  1717. and they

  1718. just got

  1719. handed to

  1720. them by

  1721. a real

  1722. demonic

  1723. spirit.

  1724. These books

  1725. must not

  1726. work.

  1727. This is

  1728. dangerous.

  1729. Let's

  1730. get rid

  1731. of these.

  1732. So,

  1733. that flows

  1734. into the

  1735. next thing.

  1736. Number

  1737. five,

  1738. the gospel

  1739. causes

  1740. idolatry

  1741. to be

  1742. renounced.

  1743. Verse 17

  1744. through 20.

  1745. Alright?

  1746. So,

  1747. very,

  1748. very strong

  1749. belief in

  1750. magical

  1751. incantations

  1752. in this

  1753. period to

  1754. cast out

  1755. evil

  1756. spirits.

  1757. They had

  1758. spells for

  1759. protection,

  1760. to get

  1761. somebody's

  1762. love,

  1763. to have

  1764. good

  1765. child

  1766. birth,

  1767. to have

  1768. all kinds

  1769. of stuff.

  1770. So,

  1771. they had

  1772. so many

  1773. rituals.

  1774. So,

  1775. 50,000

  1776. pieces of

  1777. silver,

  1778. probably

  1779. referring to

  1780. the Greek

  1781. dragma at

  1782. the time,

  1783. around

  1784. six million

  1785. dollars

  1786. in today's

  1787. currency.

  1788. So,

  1789. not just

  1790. like threw

  1791. away comic

  1792. books,

  1793. they threw

  1794. away like

  1795. seriously

  1796. published

  1797. quality books

  1798. at that

  1799. time,

  1800. and they

  1801. renounced

  1802. it.

  1803. And it

  1804. says that

  1805. it was

  1806. all in

  1807. the name

  1808. of the

  1809. Lord

  1810. Jesus.

  1811. It was

  1812. extolled.

  1813. He was

  1814. extolled.

  1815. And so,

  1816. a severe

  1817. book burning

  1818. of the

  1819. right kind,

  1820. that's

  1821. associated

  1822. with a

  1823. very negative

  1824. thinking,

  1825. but of

  1826. the right

  1827. kind,

  1828. idolatry

  1829. is renounced.

  1830. Okay?

  1831. So,

  1832. when someone

  1833. comes to

  1834. know Christ,

  1835. idolatry is

  1836. a big thing

  1837. that they

  1838. will face.

  1839. Okay?

  1840. It says

  1841. in Romans

  1842. 1 that

  1843. we've

  1844. exchanged

  1845. the truth

  1846. about God

  1847. for a lot.

  1848. Romans 2,

  1849. excuse me.

  1850. And so,

  1851. all of us

  1852. have worshipped

  1853. idols.

  1854. It doesn't

  1855. have to

  1856. be a

  1857. statue of

  1858. something.

  1859. We all

  1860. have loved

  1861. and given

  1862. our attention

  1863. to things

  1864. that are

  1865. infinitely

  1866. lesser

  1867. than God.

  1868. And God

  1869. calls that

  1870. idolatry.

  1871. It's making

  1872. things into

  1873. ultimate

  1874. things over

  1875. God.

  1876. And so,

  1877. Paul wrote

  1878. in 1 Thessalonians

  1879. 1.9,

  1880. he says,

  1881. I remember

  1882. how you

  1883. turned to

  1884. God from

  1885. idols to

  1886. serve the

  1887. living and

  1888. true God

  1889. and to

  1890. wait for

  1891. His Son

  1892. from heaven

  1893. whom He

  1894. raised from

  1895. the dead,

  1896. Jesus who

  1897. delivers us

  1898. from the

  1899. wrath to

  1900. come.

  1901. So,

  1902. idolatry is

  1903. renounced.

  1904. These people

  1905. who have

  1906. this deep

  1907. pagan past

  1908. turned away

  1909. from it

  1910. and turned

  1911. to Christ.

  1912. So,

  1913. ask yourself,

  1914. though I'm

  1915. not worshiping

  1916. a statue

  1917. or reading

  1918. a spell

  1919. book,

  1920. what are

  1921. idols in

  1922. my life

  1923. that still

  1924. compete

  1925. highly for

  1926. my love

  1927. and my

  1928. attention

  1929. to love

  1930. more than

  1931. the Savior?

  1932. So,

  1933. number six

  1934. and lastly,

  1935. this is what

  1936. we'll get to

  1937. next week,

  1938. the gospel

  1939. causes hostility,

  1940. severe hostility.

  1941. That's number

  1942. six and that'll

  1943. be the rest

  1944. of this chapter.

  1945. chapter.

  1946. But,

  1947. I thought

  1948. it would be

  1949. fitting

  1950. to read you

  1951. something

  1952. because I

  1953. have a great,

  1954. there's a great

  1955. tendency of

  1956. people in

  1957. the western

  1958. church to

  1959. think that

  1960. this stuff

  1961. isn't real

  1962. anymore.

  1963. It is.

  1964. So,

  1965. there's a

  1966. ministry that

  1967. I supported

  1968. in years past

  1969. called

  1970. The Every

  1971. Tribe.

  1972. I encourage

  1973. you to look

  1974. them up.

  1975. They're very

  1976. gospel-centered,

  1977. solid,

  1978. reform,

  1979. mission group

  1980. to every

  1981. tribe.

  1982. This is,

  1983. the founder

  1984. of it is a

  1985. man named

  1986. David Seton

  1987. and he did

  1988. a ton of

  1989. ministry in

  1990. Papua New

  1991. Guinea and

  1992. the tribes

  1993. and jungles

  1994. there.

  1995. Very

  1996. brave man

  1997. for the

  1998. gospel.

  1999. He wrote a

  2000. book called

  2001. Reckless

  2002. Abandoned.

  2003. So,

  2004. if you want

  2005. to read a

  2006. book that

  2007. really pushes

  2008. you,

  2009. it's called

  2010. Reckless

  2011. Abandoned by

  2012. David Seton.

  2013. So,

  2014. excuse me,

  2015. I'm still in

  2016. recovery by the

  2017. way,

  2018. so thank you

  2019. for bearing

  2020. with my

  2021. health right

  2022. now.

  2023. He did a

  2024. lot of

  2025. work with

  2026. a tribe

  2027. called the

  2028. Chambri

  2029. Tribe and

  2030. he started

  2031. it in

  2032. the late

  2033. 80s.

  2034. And,

  2035. as you know,

  2036. like in a

  2037. lot of

  2038. tribal

  2039. cultures in

  2040. Papua New

  2041. Guinea,

  2042. there's

  2043. sorcery,

  2044. there's

  2045. witch

  2046. doctors,

  2047. there's

  2048. a lot

  2049. of serious

  2050. death and

  2051. paganism.

  2052. In those

  2053. cultures,

  2054. and it's

  2055. real,

  2056. it's like

  2057. demonic

  2058. oppression.

  2059. And,

  2060. so I'll

  2061. read to

  2062. you,

  2063. my reading

  2064. out loud

  2065. voice is

  2066. not the

  2067. best this

  2068. morning,

  2069. so,

  2070. but I

  2071. hope that

  2072. God enables

  2073. you just

  2074. to listen

  2075. to this,

  2076. it's really

  2077. good.

  2078. But I

  2079. want you

  2080. to see

  2081. that all

  2082. the things

  2083. that we

  2084. just talked

  2085. about,

  2086. all these

  2087. points,

  2088. still happen.

  2089. They're all

  2090. the same

  2091. thing,

  2092. when a

  2093. gospel comes

  2094. into a

  2095. culture and

  2096. shakes it.

  2097. okay,

  2098. he says,

  2099. this is David

  2100. talking,

  2101. he says,

  2102. over hundreds

  2103. of years,

  2104. the Chambrite

  2105. tribesmen have

  2106. devised a

  2107. ritual to help

  2108. them discern

  2109. the identity

  2110. of the

  2111. person who

  2112. is responsible

  2113. for death.

  2114. Then that

  2115. death could

  2116. be avenged

  2117. and the

  2118. spirits

  2119. satisfied.

  2120. The ritual

  2121. is called

  2122. muabu,

  2123. which means

  2124. the shaking

  2125. of the

  2126. bamboo,

  2127. initiated

  2128. by men,

  2129. call upon

  2130. evil spirits

  2131. to come

  2132. and possess

  2133. them and

  2134. to empower

  2135. a bamboo

  2136. pole,

  2137. which will

  2138. indicate the

  2139. guilty person

  2140. in the

  2141. Chambrite.

  2142. So they

  2143. lay a

  2144. stick of

  2145. bamboo on

  2146. the ground

  2147. and it

  2148. would move

  2149. and point

  2150. to the

  2151. person guilty

  2152. of the

  2153. crime.

  2154. And so

  2155. he says,

  2156. the Chambrite

  2157. men have

  2158. boasted to

  2159. me for six

  2160. years about

  2161. how easy

  2162. it was

  2163. to conjure

  2164. up evil

  2165. spirits.

  2166. It is so

  2167. simple,

  2168. they would

  2169. say,

  2170. even our

  2171. children can

  2172. do it.

  2173. Tribal

  2174. children grow

  2175. up learning

  2176. how to

  2177. manipulate the

  2178. spirits through

  2179. a variety

  2180. of sacrifices

  2181. and magical

  2182. rituals.

  2183. So just

  2184. like we

  2185. read,

  2186. and he

  2187. says,

  2188. Antonio,

  2189. who was a

  2190. woman in

  2191. this tribe

  2192. who had

  2193. died,

  2194. she was a

  2195. Christian.

  2196. And so

  2197. they were

  2198. trying to

  2199. find someone

  2200. to blame

  2201. for her

  2202. death.

  2203. And so

  2204. she was

  2205. buried that

  2206. afternoon

  2207. in the

  2208. chamber

  2209. were prepared

  2210. for the

  2211. ritual that

  2212. same evening.

  2213. As the

  2214. sun was

  2215. setting,

  2216. more than

  2217. 200 people

  2218. gathered in

  2219. the open

  2220. area before

  2221. the huts.

  2222. Two young

  2223. men stood

  2224. up to

  2225. begin the

  2226. solemn

  2227. incantation.

  2228. One man

  2229. held a

  2230. five-foot-long

  2231. bamboo pole

  2232. while the

  2233. other tapped

  2234. on it

  2235. rhythmically

  2236. with a

  2237. human bone.

  2238. He chanted

  2239. softly,

  2240. at first

  2241. inviting the

  2242. spirit of

  2243. Antonio to

  2244. take control

  2245. of the

  2246. bamboo.

  2247. Then his

  2248. chants became

  2249. louder and

  2250. more aggressive.

  2251. Excuse me.

  2252. He says,

  2253. I inched over

  2254. toward the

  2255. bamboo.

  2256. So David's

  2257. moving right

  2258. up towards it.

  2259. And he said,

  2260. Annoyed that

  2261. they were

  2262. attempting to

  2263. conjure the

  2264. spirit of

  2265. Antonio,

  2266. to him was

  2267. a sister in

  2268. the Lord.

  2269. I shouted

  2270. at them,

  2271. Antonio is a

  2272. follower of

  2273. Jesus.

  2274. She is in

  2275. heaven with

  2276. God right

  2277. now, and

  2278. her spirit

  2279. will not

  2280. appear tonight.

  2281. Some minutes

  2282. later, an

  2283. intense verbal

  2284. and spiritual

  2285. warfare ensued.

  2286. The

  2287. chambery

  2288. sorcerers were

  2289. begging with

  2290. the spirits to

  2291. come and take

  2292. over the

  2293. bamboo physically.

  2294. But I

  2295. prayed the

  2296. Lord of

  2297. restrain them

  2298. to show

  2299. himself to

  2300. be more

  2301. dominant than

  2302. these ancestral

  2303. spirits.

  2304. Finally, after

  2305. many hours, they

  2306. gave up and

  2307. disgusted, they

  2308. said, the

  2309. spirits won't

  2310. come tonight.

  2311. And I said,

  2312. that's right.

  2313. I snapped

  2314. back at them.

  2315. Our great

  2316. God is more

  2317. powerful than

  2318. the spirits, and

  2319. he has proven

  2320. his superiority

  2321. by disarming

  2322. your spirits and

  2323. forbidding that

  2324. bamboo to move

  2325. tonight.

  2326. It's every time

  2327. before it had

  2328. moved, and he

  2329. said, it's not

  2330. going to happen.

  2331. In the name

  2332. of Jesus, and

  2333. it didn't

  2334. happen.

  2335. He says,

  2336. suddenly, anger

  2337. and confusion

  2338. erupted as

  2339. people were

  2340. running around

  2341. screaming and

  2342. throwing coconuts

  2343. at us.

  2344. I thought the

  2345. people were

  2346. chasing after us,

  2347. so I yelled

  2348. to our team,

  2349. run.

  2350. They took

  2351. off, sprinting

  2352. down through

  2353. the grass.

  2354. As a part of

  2355. my team hustled

  2356. back to our

  2357. campsite, I

  2358. continued to

  2359. shout at them

  2360. God's truth and

  2361. power and

  2362. authority over

  2363. their spirits.

  2364. So he's

  2365. running and

  2366. yelling back

  2367. at them kind

  2368. of thing.

  2369. I persisted

  2370. with loud

  2371. preaching about

  2372. the supremacy

  2373. of God over

  2374. evil spirits.

  2375. And then

  2376. unexpectedly, a

  2377. woman appeared

  2378. out of the

  2379. shadows of a

  2380. thatched hut.

  2381. Along with

  2382. those by my

  2383. team, it was

  2384. obvious that

  2385. she had a

  2386. surge of

  2387. demonic

  2388. power.

  2389. Obviously, this

  2390. was a very

  2391. and more

  2392. potent

  2393. sorceress.

  2394. she waved

  2395. her hands

  2396. over her

  2397. head and

  2398. began to

  2399. chant and

  2400. dance to

  2401. plea with

  2402. the spirits

  2403. to move

  2404. the bamboo.

  2405. Once again,

  2406. there was a

  2407. time of

  2408. intense

  2409. spiritual

  2410. conflict as

  2411. she begged

  2412. the spirits

  2413. to reveal

  2414. themselves.

  2415. I continue

  2416. to pray

  2417. loudly for

  2418. the power

  2419. and presence

  2420. of our

  2421. Lord to

  2422. invoke her

  2423. and disempower

  2424. her to

  2425. raise the

  2426. spirits and

  2427. to take

  2428. control of

  2429. the bamboo.

  2430. Amazingly,

  2431. to me,

  2432. the Lord

  2433. promoted me

  2434. to issue

  2435. a challenge.

  2436. It sounds

  2437. like something

  2438. I like a

  2439. lot here in

  2440. the promise

  2441. of Baal.

  2442. I yelled

  2443. at her,

  2444. Rosa,

  2445. bring out

  2446. your most

  2447. powerful

  2448. sorcerer.

  2449. If he

  2450. can persuade

  2451. these spirits

  2452. to shake

  2453. the bamboo,

  2454. we will

  2455. follow and

  2456. worship your

  2457. spirits,

  2458. but if he

  2459. can't do

  2460. it, you

  2461. will need

  2462. to repent

  2463. and worship

  2464. and follow

  2465. our God.

  2466. Sounds just

  2467. like Elijah.

  2468. him.

  2469. So Rosa

  2470. became even

  2471. more desperate,

  2472. twisting around,

  2473. dancing frantically

  2474. to summon the

  2475. spirits, but

  2476. the bamboo

  2477. remained

  2478. lifeless.

  2479. Finally,

  2480. with loud

  2481. cursing, she

  2482. gave up and

  2483. retreated back

  2484. into the

  2485. night.

  2486. One of the

  2487. men grabbed

  2488. the bamboo

  2489. and angrily

  2490. shoved it

  2491. through the

  2492. doorway of a

  2493. hut.

  2494. As the

  2495. villagers began

  2496. to disperse,

  2497. I quickly

  2498. issued the

  2499. challenge once

  2500. more for

  2501. them to bring

  2502. out their

  2503. most powerful

  2504. sorcerer,

  2505. like this

  2506. is all

  2507. you got?

  2508. Anybody

  2509. else here

  2510. want to

  2511. give it

  2512. a go?

  2513. But they

  2514. refused to

  2515. try.

  2516. Instead,

  2517. these furious

  2518. villagers chased

  2519. after us as

  2520. I shouted,

  2521. Christ is

  2522. greater than

  2523. your spirits.

  2524. So,

  2525. this is when

  2526. a machete

  2527. wielding

  2528. tribesman ran

  2529. after me.

  2530. He took

  2531. three quick

  2532. steps forward

  2533. and raised

  2534. the bush

  2535. knife over

  2536. me.

  2537. I

  2538. wheeled around

  2539. to avoid

  2540. being hit in

  2541. the head.

  2542. Fully

  2543. expecting to

  2544. be hit,

  2545. he slashed

  2546. and he

  2547. missed.

  2548. When I

  2549. peeked around,

  2550. I saw one

  2551. of the

  2552. unsaved

  2553. chambery

  2554. men had

  2555. jumped between

  2556. us and

  2557. said,

  2558. leave this

  2559. man alone.

  2560. Why would

  2561. an unsaved

  2562. man do

  2563. this?

  2564. Not because

  2565. he was a

  2566. believer.

  2567. He wasn't.

  2568. He did it

  2569. because he

  2570. had seen the

  2571. obvious

  2572. demonstration of

  2573. God's

  2574. authority over

  2575. the evil

  2576. spirits.

  2577. And he was

  2578. afraid of

  2579. what our

  2580. God would

  2581. do to

  2582. him if I

  2583. was killed.

  2584. To my

  2585. amazement,

  2586. forty

  2587. chambery

  2588. villagers

  2589. encircled

  2590. me and

  2591. quietly

  2592. take me

  2593. back to

  2594. my camp.

  2595. My strength

  2596. left me and

  2597. I began to

  2598. fall on the

  2599. ground weeping.

  2600. I wept because

  2601. of the great

  2602. love for the

  2603. chambery.

  2604. I wept because

  2605. of this

  2606. incredible

  2607. adrenaline rush

  2608. of almost

  2609. having my

  2610. head chopped

  2611. off.

  2612. I wept because

  2613. of the

  2614. realization God

  2615. had just

  2616. shown through

  2617. us of a

  2618. display of

  2619. his power

  2620. openly rebuking

  2621. the spirits

  2622. that ruled

  2623. over the

  2624. chambery for

  2625. thousands of

  2626. years.

  2627. All that

  2628. emotion exploded.

  2629. The machete

  2630. man, the guy

  2631. tried to kill

  2632. him, came to

  2633. visit me the

  2634. next day.

  2635. He brought a

  2636. gift of two

  2637. beetle nuts and

  2638. apologized and

  2639. he says, I don't

  2640. know what came

  2641. over me last

  2642. night, but I

  2643. almost killed

  2644. you.

  2645. He says, I

  2646. responded to

  2647. him, I know

  2648. what came over

  2649. you.

  2650. You are a

  2651. servant of

  2652. evil spirits,

  2653. but last night

  2654. our God showed

  2655. himself to be

  2656. more powerful

  2657. than your

  2658. spirits.

  2659. You need to

  2660. repent and

  2661. turn to the

  2662. Lord Jesus.

  2663. This man's

  2664. western name is

  2665. Bob.

  2666. Sorry, Bob.

  2667. I now

  2668. jokingly refer

  2669. to him as

  2670. Machete Bob.

  2671. He has

  2672. become my

  2673. best friend

  2674. among the

  2675. chambery and

  2676. recently has

  2677. come to know

  2678. Christ and

  2679. he follows us

  2680. around every

  2681. day helping

  2682. us in

  2683. everything we

  2684. did.

  2685. So before he

  2686. became a

  2687. believer, he

  2688. insisted I

  2689. use his

  2690. canoe and

  2691. boat motor

  2692. whenever I

  2693. needed to go

  2694. up the river

  2695. to talk to

  2696. the tribes

  2697. about Christ.

  2698. the spiritual

  2699. conflict with

  2700. the sorceress

  2701. was a turning

  2702. point in

  2703. evangelism of

  2704. this tribe.

  2705. Dozens of

  2706. villagers began

  2707. inviting us to

  2708. speak with them

  2709. and many came

  2710. to know Christ.

  2711. This demonstration

  2712. of God's power

  2713. has given them

  2714. courage to

  2715. listen to the

  2716. gospel message

  2717. and seriously

  2718. consider who

  2719. Jesus Christ

  2720. really is.

  2721. Good stuff.

  2722. So you see

  2723. all these

  2724. things we just

  2725. mentioned happening

  2726. even in

  2727. cultures today

  2728. and they still

  2729. will even in

  2730. ours even

  2731. though we

  2732. don't always

  2733. see supernatural

  2734. signs.

  2735. So believe

  2736. and trust in

  2737. the gospel is

  2738. the power of

  2739. God for

  2740. salvation to

  2741. all who

  2742. believe.

  2743. Let's pray

  2744. together.

  2745. Let's pray

  2746. together.

  2747. Let's pray

  2748. together.
