  1. A copy of God's Word, which I hope is with you and well read and meditated on day and night and treasured in your heart.

  2. ! And turn with me to the book of Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  3. This morning's text for our consideration is Acts chapter 20 verses 25 through 38.

    Acts 20:25–38

  4. That's to the end of the chapter. This is the second half of Paul's farewell address to the Ephesian elders.

  5. Last week we looked at the measure of successful ministry as Paul holds up his ministry as an example in the beginning of this address.

  6. He shows us ways in which we can see that a ministry is successful, which so often does not look the way the world measures success.

  7. This week we'll look at specific exhortations that Paul gives to the Ephesian elders.

  8. That's the turn he takes as we begin in verse 25 this morning.

  9. Paul in effect says to them, to these Ephesian elders, shepherd the church well in the following ways.

  10. So today there's very clear instruction to the leaders of a church.

  11. Explicit instruction to the leaders of a church.

  12. But I also want us to consider the implications of this text for all of us.

  13. As we're all given some measure of charge over someone, somebody that we're responsible to, to shepherd.

  14. And particularly this morning, I want fathers and future fathers to consider some of these implications.

  15. As that's the case, I'm going to structure our study of Acts 20, 25 through 38 in six points.

  16. They do not alliterate this morning.

  17. And they are as follows, and of course I'll go back through them.

  18. But I want to give you the structure in your mind before we read the text and launch into our study.

  19. Faithful shepherds, number one, look after themselves.

  20. Number two, lead their people.

  21. Number three, protect their people.

  22. Number four, pray and study.

  23. Number five, serve the weak.

  24. And number six, love and are loved.

  25. So let's read together our text for today.

  26. But I think to be fair to Paul's address, we ought to back up and start in 17.

  27. So we looked at verses 17 through 24 last week.

  28. But I want to start reading in 17, and then we'll pick up at verse 25 and read to the end of the chapter.

  29. Before we read, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us.

  30. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  31. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  32. So I'll begin in verse 17 of chapter 20.

  33. Now from Miletus, He sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to Him.

  34. And when they came to Him, He said to them,

  35. You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,

  36. serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews.

  37. How I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable

  38. and teaching you in public and from house to house,

  39. testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  40. And now behold, I am going to Jerusalem constrained by the Spirit,

  41. not knowing what will happen to me there,

  42. except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me.

  43. But I do not count my life of any value nor as precious to myself.

  44. If only I may finish my course in the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus

  45. to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

  46. And our text for this morning begins here.

  47. And now behold,

  48. I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again.

  49. Therefore, I testify to you this day that I'm innocent of the blood of all,

  50. for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

  51. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers

  52. to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

  53. I know that after my departure, fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.

  54. And from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things to draw away the disciples after them.

  55. Therefore, be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears.

  56. Now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace,

  57. which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

  58. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.

  59. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me.

  60. In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way,

  61. we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus,

  62. how he himself said,

  63. it is more blessed to give than to receive.

  64. And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all.

  65. And there was much weeping on the part of all.

  66. They embraced Paul and kissed him,

  67. being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken.

  68. They would not see his face again.

  69. And they accompanied him to the ship.

  70. Now in verse 25,

  71. Paul states that he will never see these men again.

  72. He's confident of this fact.

  73. He'll never see them again.

  74. So these are his parting words, right?

  75. In his thinking, these are his parting words.

  76. Later, he writes a letter to them.

  77. So there's more instruction given to the church of Ephesus.

  78. But in his mind, these are parting words.

  79. It's the last time he'll speak to them.

  80. And I think that that fact really punctuates this address, right?

  81. The closing address for the church at Ephesus in Paul's thinking.

  82. What does Paul deem of greatest importance to remind these men of before his departure?

  83. Verse 25 is clear about that, right?

  84. You'll never see my face again.

  85. And the first point that Paul makes about the faithful shepherd

  86. is that faithful shepherds look after themselves.

  87. They look to themselves.

  88. The beginning of verse 28.

  89. Pay careful attention to yourselves.

  90. In order for the man of God to lead others to God,

  91. he must be pursuing and growing in holiness.

  92. That is to say, you cannot lead others faithfully

  93. if you yourself are not walking uprightly.

  94. If you yourself are not excelling in things of holiness.

  95. If you're not ahead of the people that you're leading.

  96. Paul says to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2, verses 20 and 21.

    2 Timothy 2:20

  97. And do you recall where Timothy's at when Paul writes 1 and 2 Timothy?

  98. He's in Ephesus.

  99. Now in a great house, there are not only vessels of gold and silver,

  100. but also of wood and clay.

  101. Some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.

  102. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable,

  103. he will be a vessel for honorable use.

  104. Set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house,

  105. ready for every good work.

  106. So as faithful shepherds,

  107. we must be putting off those things that are dishonorable.

  108. Putting off sin.

  109. And putting on rather than righteousness.

  110. Right?

  111. Excelling in holiness.

  112. And as such,

  113. the faithful shepherd is set apart as holy.

  114. Sanctified as holy.

  115. I think one of the most wonderful examples I've ever heard,

  116. household simple example of what it means to be set apart in this way,

  117. and something we do in our families,

  118. the idea of a special birthday plate.

  119. If any of you do that.

  120. But we have a plate at our house that's bigger than you should ever eat off of,

  121. and very colorful,

  122. and it says on it,

  123. I am very special around the edge.

  124. And it only gets used on someone's birthday.

  125. So I get to eat off of the I am very special plate on my birthday.

  126. So the plate is set apart for the purpose of celebrating a birthday.

  127. And that's what Paul's communicating here to Timothy.

  128. Right?

  129. And what Paul's communicating to the Ephesian elders,

  130. and what he's communicating to us.

  131. If we want to be useful to the master of the house,

  132. we must be pursuing holiness.

  133. We must be becoming a vessel for honorable use.

  134. Faithful shepherds are out ahead of others in their pursuit of holiness.

  135. In their pursuit of the God who is holy.

  136. Faithful shepherds ought not be like the Pharisees

  137. of whom Jesus said the following in Matthew chapter 23 verse 27.

    Matthew 23:27

  138. He said to them,

  139. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  140. For you are like whitewashed tombs,

  141. which outwardly appear beautiful,

  142. but within are full of dead peoples, bones,

  143. and all uncleanliness.

  144. And this is not to say that the faithful shepherd is perfect.

  145. This just means that the faithful shepherd is pressing on,

  146. by the grace of God,

  147. in perfection.

  148. A Puritan pastor by the name of Richard Baxter

  149. wrote a book called The Reformed Pastor.

  150. If you have any inkling of becoming a pastor,

  151. you need to read his work.

  152. In it he said this,

  153. Take heed to yourselves,

  154. lest you live in those sins

  155. which you preach against in others,

  156. and lest you be guilty of that which daily you condemn.

  157. Will you make it your work to magnify God,

  158. and when you have done,

  159. dishonor Him as much as others?

  160. Will you proclaim Christ's governing power,

  161. and yet contemn it and rebel yourselves?

  162. Will you preach His laws and willfully break them?

  163. If sin be evil,

  164. why do you live in it?

  165. If it be not,

  166. why do you dissuade men from it?

  167. If it be dangerous,

  168. how dare you venture on it?

  169. If it be not,

  170. why do you tell men so?

  171. If God's threatenings be true,

  172. why do you not fear them?

  173. If they be false,

  174. why do you needlessly trouble men with them,

  175. and put them into such frights without a cause?

  176. Take heed to yourselves,

  177. lest you cry down sin,

  178. and yet do not overcome it.

  179. Lest while you seek to bring it down in others,

  180. you bow to it and become its slaves yourselves.

  181. Oh, brethren,

  182. it is easier to chide at sin

  183. than to overcome it.

  184. And so faithful shepherds

  185. look after themselves,

  186. examine themselves,

  187. press on by God's grace

  188. in holiness themselves.

  189. Secondly,

  190. faithful shepherds

  191. lead their people.

  192. You see this in the last part

  193. of verse 28.

  194. Take careful attention to yourselves

  195. and

  196. to all

  197. the flock.

  198. And Paul here is referring

  199. specifically to

  200. the Ephesian church.

  201. And I would

  202. suggest

  203. those who would be added to that number.

  204. Right?

  205. To all

  206. the flock.

  207. In which the Holy Spirit

  208. has made you overseers

  209. to care for the church of God

  210. which He obtained

  211. with His own blood.

  212. Whether you have been charged by God

  213. with the care of a church

  214. or with the care of a family,

  215. in some cases both,

  216. you are to give those people leadership.

  217. If you are a man,

  218. then you most likely

  219. have been given the responsibility

  220. to lead someone.

  221. Do not shrink from that responsibility.

  222. Do not think that your job

  223. ends with the chauffeuring

  224. of your wife and children

  225. to school

  226. or to practice

  227. or to church.

  228. Do not think that your responsibility

  229. to your family

  230. and friends

  231. and neighbors

  232. and co-workers

  233. ends

  234. with an invitation

  235. to a church event.

  236. We are meant

  237. to lead

  238. the people

  239. that God has given us

  240. charge over

  241. in our lives.

  242. Sometimes that's more clear

  243. than in other cases.

  244. Certainly,

  245. fathers,

  246. we know

  247. who we've been given

  248. charge over.

  249. What is the tool

  250. of the faithful shepherd

  251. in leading

  252. His people?

  253. The Word of God.

  254. It's the Word of God.

  255. Paul states in verse 26

  256. and 27

  257. as an example himself.

  258. He says,

  259. Therefore,

  260. I testify to you this day

  261. that I am innocent

  262. of the blood

  263. of all.

  264. The saying is,

  265. I have done

  266. everything I could

  267. possibly do for.

  268. Verse 27,

  269. I did not shrink

  270. from to glaring to you

  271. the whole counsel

  272. of God.

  273. Paul says

  274. that he has done

  275. everything

  276. that he could do

  277. to lead

  278. the Ephesians

  279. because

  280. he had boldly

  281. declared to him

  282. the whole counsel

  283. of God.

  284. Now,

  285. I do not believe

  286. that this means

  287. that Paul preached

  288. an expositional sermon

  289. on every text

  290. of the 39 books

  291. of the Old Testament.

  292. What they had

  293. in that day

  294. as their Bible.

  295. I don't think

  296. that it means that.

  297. I do believe

  298. it means

  299. that Paul was

  300. very clear to them

  301. how a man

  302. is to be saved,

  303. God's purpose

  304. in his salvation,

  305. and the way

  306. of obedience

  307. to God,

  308. which meant

  309. he preached

  310. a lot of that text,

  311. but probably

  312. not every bit

  313. of it.

  314. They understood

  315. all things

  316. necessary

  317. to be in relationship

  318. with the Lord

  319. and to please Him.

  320. The whole counsel,

  321. the whole purpose

  322. of God.

  323. He gave to them

  324. a biblical theology.

  325. There is great need

  326. in our day

  327. for faithful shepherds

  328. to lead their people

  329. by the Word

  330. of God.

  331. In Amos 8,

    Amos 8:11

  332. verses 11 and 12,

  333. God issues

  334. a frightful prophecy

  335. which I believe

  336. that our nation

  337. and our community

  338. is now

  339. participating in.

  340. Listen to these words.

  341. Behold,

  342. the days are coming,

  343. declares the Lord God,

  344. when I will send

  345. a famine

  346. on the land,

  347. not a famine

  348. of bread

  349. nor a thirst

  350. for water,

  351. but of hearing

  352. the words

  353. of the Lord.

  354. They shall wander

  355. from sea to sea

  356. and from north

  357. to east.

  358. They shall run

  359. to and fro

  360. to seek

  361. the Word of the Lord,

  362. but they shall

  363. not find it.

  364. Is Christ's family

  365. church

  366. and our influence

  367. in our community

  368. a place

  369. where people

  370. can find

  371. the Word of the Lord?

  372. Let's be

  373. bastions

  374. of light

  375. so that our people

  376. know God's Word

  377. and can share it

  378. with those

  379. who so desperately

  380. need it,

  381. those who run

  382. to and fro.

  383. God's Word

  384. is good

  385. for His people

  386. and we should be

  387. concerned about

  388. the good

  389. of God's people

  390. because God's people

  391. were obtained

  392. with Jesus'

  393. own blood.

  394. Jesus died

  395. for the church.

  396. It is true,

  397. if you have placed

  398. believing faith

  399. in Jesus Christ,

  400. that Jesus died

  401. for you.

  402. But I think

  403. it's wrong

  404. for us to constantly

  405. have this personal

  406. relationship

  407. with Jesus Christ

  408. mentality

  409. because Jesus died

  410. for the church.

  411. He saved a people

  412. for His own possession.

  413. And beloved,

  414. if you love Jesus,

  415. you will love

  416. the church.

  417. And therefore,

  418. you'll be concerned

  419. for the way

  420. that it goes.

  421. So faithful shepherds

  422. lead their people.

  423. Thirdly,

  424. faithful shepherds

  425. protect their people.

  426. Faithful shepherds

  427. protect their people.

  428. Verses 29-31,

  429. and we'll pick up

  430. a little bit

  431. from verse 26-27.

  432. Paul says

  433. that people

  434. will come

  435. from outside

  436. and inside

  437. the church

  438. to deceive

  439. the disciples.

  440. So both from

  441. without

  442. and within.

  443. How is it

  444. that our people

  445. are deceived?

  446. How is it

  447. that people

  448. are led astray?

  449. through the

  450. transmission

  451. of ideas.

  452. This is how

  453. they're led astray,

  454. which means that

  455. in our day,

  456. we will have to be

  457. all the more

  458. vigilant

  459. as media

  460. brings ideas

  461. of all varieties

  462. to the minds

  463. of our people.

  464. The teeth

  465. of the ravenous

  466. wolves,

  467. the fierce

  468. wolves,

  469. are ideas.

  470. we affect

  471. people

  472. at the level

  473. of their

  474. thinking.

  475. Men,

  476. you must

  477. protect your

  478. homes from

  479. ideas that

  480. are not

  481. consistent

  482. with the

  483. teaching

  484. of God.

  485. And this

  486. is a work.

  487. We have

  488. to be paying

  489. attention

  490. to what's

  491. coming into

  492. the minds

  493. of our

  494. wives,

  495. to our

  496. children,

  497. our extended

  498. family,

  499. our friends,

  500. our co-workers.

  501. We must

  502. pay attention

  503. to all

  504. of the winds

  505. of philosophy

  506. and their

  507. contradiction.

  508. to the

  509. word of

  510. God.

  511. We find

  512. ourselves

  513. every day

  514. in a war

  515. of ideas

  516. and the

  517. faithful shepherd

  518. protects

  519. his people.

  520. We must

  521. be so

  522. careful in

  523. the matter.

  524. Listen to

  525. the warning

  526. of Jesus

  527. from Matthew

    Matthew 7:15

  528. chapter 7

  529. verse 15.

  530. He said,

  531. Beware

  532. of false

  533. prophets

  534. who come

  535. to you

  536. in sheep's

  537. clothing,

  538. but inwardly

  539. are ravenous

  540. wolves.

  541. So we

  542. see someone

  543. who appears

  544. to be a

  545. follower of

  546. Jesus,

  547. and therefore

  548. we listen

  549. to whatever

  550. it is

  551. they may

  552. have to

  553. say.

  554. Some will

  555. be part,

  556. seem to

  557. be part,

  558. of God's

  559. people.

  560. Will not

  561. be at all,

  562. but they

  563. will work

  564. to devour

  565. sheep.

  566. What do

  567. fierce,

  568. ravenous

  569. wolves do

  570. amongst

  571. sheep?

  572. They don't

  573. sit quietly.

  574. They devour

  575. sheep.

  576. sheep.

  577. The faithful

  578. shepherd is

  579. like the

  580. Berean

  581. believer who

  582. searched the

  583. Scriptures to

  584. see if these

  585. things were

  586. so.

  587. And beloved,

  588. we live in a

  589. day that we

  590. need a new

  591. reformation.

  592. In Luther and

  593. Calvin and

  594. Zwingli's day,

  595. people didn't

  596. know the Bible

  597. because the

  598. Bible was

  599. printed in

  600. Latin.

  601. It's difficult

  602. for them to

  603. know the

  604. Bible.

  605. We have no

  606. excuse.

  607. We have

  608. the Word of

  609. God in

  610. our language

  611. with lots

  612. of helps.

  613. We have

  614. no excuse

  615. not to be

  616. like those

  617. Bereans,

  618. to search

  619. the Scriptures,

  620. to be sure

  621. that the

  622. things that

  623. are being

  624. told to

  625. us are

  626. in fact

  627. true.

  628. And we

  629. have a

  630. standard

  631. of that

  632. truth.

  633. We ought

  634. to say

  635. less and

  636. less,

  637. I believe,

  638. and more

  639. and more,

  640. the Bible

  641. says.

  642. Paul issues

  643. similar warning

  644. in Romans

    Romans 16:17

  645. 16,

  646. verse 17

  647. and 18,

  648. where he

  649. says,

  650. I appeal

  651. to you

  652. brothers,

  653. to watch

  654. out for

  655. those who

  656. cause

  657. divisions

  658. and create

  659. obstacles,

  660. contrary to

  661. the doctrine

  662. that you

  663. have been

  664. taught.

  665. Avoid

  666. them.

  667. For such

  668. persons do

  669. not serve

  670. our Lord

  671. Christ,

  672. but their

  673. own appetites.

  674. And by

  675. smooth talk

  676. and flattery,

  677. they deceive

  678. the hearts

  679. of the

  680. naive.

  681. Beloved,

  682. the church

  683. is meant

  684. to be set

  685. apart from

  686. the world

  687. so that

  688. it can

  689. serve

  690. the world.

  691. We're

  692. meant to

  693. be distinct

  694. from

  695. the world.

  696. We're

  697. meant to

  698. contend

  699. for the

  700. faith.

  701. Turn with me,

  702. please,

  703. to the book

  704. of Jude.

  705. You can

  706. mark Acts

  707. 20.

  708. We will

  709. come back

  710. to it.

  711. Turn to

  712. the book

  713. of Jude.

  714. It's just

  715. before the

  716. book of

  717. Revelation.

  718. Jude was

  719. one of the

  720. brothers of

  721. Jesus.

  722. We are not

  723. sure who

  724. this letter

  725. is addressed

  726. to specifically,

  727. but we know

  728. that it was

  729. addressed to

  730. either a

  731. church or

  732. to a

  733. region of

  734. churches.

  735. It could

  736. have been

  737. an open

  738. letter,

  739. quite

  740. possibly.

  741. Anything

  742. we might

  743. think is

  744. really

  745. conjecture.

  746. We're not

  747. exactly

  748. sure.

  749. However,

  750. it is

  751. addressed to

  752. Christians,

  753. and it

  754. contains the

  755. theme that

  756. the church

  757. must contend

  758. for the

  759. one true

  760. faith once

  761. for all

  762. delivered to

  763. the saints.

  764. That's in

  765. verse 3.

  766. And people

  767. of faith

  768. must preserve

  769. to the

  770. end by

  771. resisting the

  772. false

  773. teachers and

  774. following

  775. the truth.

  776. So I

  777. want to

  778. read to

  779. you just

  780. a few

  781. verses from

  782. Jude,

  783. beginning

  784. in

  785. verse 3.

  786. This is

  787. verse 3

  788. and 4.

  789. Beloved,

  790. although I

  791. was very

  792. eager to

  793. write to

  794. you about

  795. our common

  796. salvation,

  797. I found

  798. it necessary

  799. to write

  800. appealing to

  801. you to

  802. contend for

  803. the faith

  804. that was

  805. once for

  806. all delivered

  807. to the

  808. saints.

  809. Seems

  810. that Jude

  811. really just

  812. wanted to

  813. write and

  814. rejoice in

  815. this common

  816. salvation.

  817. Just speak

  818. of these

  819. beautiful

  820. doctrines that

  821. they believed

  822. together,

  823. but instead

  824. he's

  825. compelled

  826. instead

  827. to say

  828. hold fast

  829. to those

  830. things that

  831. we've said

  832. we believe

  833. to be

  834. true.

  835. Verse 4,

  836. 4,

  837. certain people

  838. have crept

  839. in unnoticed.

  840. Wolves

  841. and sheep

  842. clothing

  843. who long

  844. ago

  845. were designated

  846. for this

  847. condemnation.

  848. ungodly

  849. people

  850. who

  851. pervert

  852. the grace

  853. of our

  854. God

  855. into

  856. sensuality

  857. and deny

  858. our only

  859. Master

  860. and Lord

  861. Jesus

  862. Christ.

  863. And then

  864. skip down

  865. to verse

  866. 10.

  867. But these

  868. people

  869. blaspheme

  870. all that

  871. they do

  872. not

  873. understand

  874. and they

  875. are destroyed

  876. by all

  877. that they

  878. like unreasoning

  879. animals

  880. understand

  881. instinctively.

  882. Woe to

  883. them

  884. for they

  885. walk in

  886. the way

  887. of Cain

  888. and abandon

  889. themselves

  890. for the

  891. sake of

  892. gain

  893. to

  894. Balaam's

  895. heir

  896. and

  897. perished

  898. in

  899. Korah's

  900. rebellion.

  901. We won't

  902. get into

  903. all of

  904. that.

  905. These

  906. are

  907. hidden

  908. reefs

  909. at your

  910. love

  911. feast.

  912. Hidden

  913. reefs

  914. cause

  915. ships

  916. to

  917. shipwreck.

  918. As

  919. they

  920. feast

  921. with

  922. you

  923. without

  924. fear,

  925. shepherds

  926. feeding

  927. themselves,

  928. waterless

  929. clouds

  930. swept

  931. along

  932. by

  933. winds,

  934. fruitless

  935. trees

  936. in

  937. late

  938. autumn,

  939. twice

  940. dead,

  941. uprooted.

  942. Wild

  943. waves

  944. of the

  945. sea

  946. casting

  947. up the

  948. foam

  949. of their

  950. own

  951. shame,

  952. wandering

  953. stars

  954. for whom

  955. the gloom

  956. of utter

  957. darkness

  958. has been

  959. reserved

  960. forever.

  961. So Jude

  962. gets rather

  963. poetic

  964. to say

  965. these are

  966. serious

  967. infractions

  968. to the

  969. church

  970. of God.

  971. Serious

  972. matters

  973. that must

  974. be dealt

  975. with.

  976. These

  977. people

  978. are

  979. damaging

  980. to the

  981. church

  982. of

  983. Christ.

  984. I'm

  985. in no

  986. way

  987. suggesting

  988. that we're

  989. unloving

  990. toward

  991. these

  992. people,

  993. but we

  994. must

  995. contend

  996. for the

  997. truth,

  998. for the

  999. sake

  1000. of

  1001. God's

  1002. people.

  1003. We

  1004. must

  1005. stand

  1006. for the

  1007. truth.

  1008. So the

  1009. faithful

  1010. shepherd

  1011. must

  1012. protect

  1013. their

  1014. people.

  1015. But the

  1016. aim is

  1017. not just

  1018. that our

  1019. people would

  1020. know some

  1021. things about

  1022. God,

  1023. that someone

  1024. could recite

  1025. to us

  1026. orthodox

  1027. doctrine,

  1028. just knowing

  1029. it,

  1030. but that

  1031. they would

  1032. know

  1033. God.

  1034. Not too

  1035. many decades

  1036. after Paul

  1037. says his

  1038. final goodbye

  1039. to the

  1040. Ephesian

  1041. elders,

  1042. the apostle

  1043. Paul receives

  1044. a vision.

  1045. So this is

  1046. 20 to

  1047. 45 years

  1048. later.

  1049. I'm on the

  1050. longer side

  1051. of that.

  1052. About four

  1053. decades

  1054. later,

  1055. the apostle

  1056. John receives

  1057. a vision

  1058. which is

  1059. recorded in

  1060. the book

  1061. of Revelation.

  1062. So turn

  1063. with me to

  1064. Revelation

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  1065. chapter 2.

  1066. By the

  1067. time of

  1068. the apostle

  1069. John's

  1070. vision,

  1071. what had

  1072. happened

  1073. to the

  1074. Ephesian

  1075. church?

  1076. Beginning in

  1077. verse 2,

  1078. Revelation 2.

  1079. Jesus says,

  1080. I know

  1081. your works,

  1082. your toil,

  1083. and your

  1084. patient endurance,

  1085. and how you

  1086. cannot bear

  1087. with those

  1088. who are evil,

  1089. but have

  1090. tested those

  1091. who call

  1092. themselves

  1093. apostles and

  1094. are not,

  1095. and found

  1096. them to be

  1097. false.

  1098. So they're

  1099. commended,

  1100. in verse 2,

  1101. right off the

  1102. bat,

  1103. good for you

  1104. guys,

  1105. right?

  1106. You have

  1107. been holding

  1108. orthodox

  1109. belief.

  1110. Good.

  1111. In verse

  1112. 3,

  1113. I know

  1114. you are

  1115. enduring

  1116. patiently

  1117. and bearing

  1118. up for

  1119. my name's

  1120. sake,

  1121. and you

  1122. have not

  1123. grown weary,

  1124. but I

  1125. have this

  1126. against you,

  1127. that you

  1128. have abandoned

  1129. the love

  1130. you had

  1131. at first.

  1132. Remember

  1133. therefore,

  1134. from where

  1135. you have

  1136. fallen,

  1137. repent,

  1138. and do

  1139. the works

  1140. you did

  1141. at first.

  1142. If not,

  1143. I will

  1144. come to

  1145. you and

  1146. remove

  1147. your lampstand

  1148. from its

  1149. place,

  1150. unless you

  1151. repent.

  1152. Yet this

  1153. you have,

  1154. verse 6,

  1155. you hate

  1156. the works

  1157. of the

  1158. Nicolaitans,

  1159. which I

  1160. also

  1161. hate.

  1162. Boy,

  1163. I would

  1164. have hated

  1165. to be a

  1166. Nicolaitan,

  1167. wouldn't you?

  1168. They had

  1169. defended

  1170. the church

  1171. against

  1172. false

  1173. teachers.

  1174. They hated

  1175. the Nicolaitans,

  1176. and we don't

  1177. know exactly

  1178. what the

  1179. heresy was.

  1180. However,

  1181. contextually,

  1182. it would

  1183. seem that

  1184. Jesus is

  1185. calling them

  1186. to repent

  1187. and return

  1188. to works

  1189. of love,

  1190. things that

  1191. are driven

  1192. and fueled

  1193. by love,

  1194. things that

  1195. are consistent

  1196. with God's

  1197. moral law.

  1198. And so

  1199. there's

  1200. some conjecture

  1201. at this point,

  1202. but many

  1203. believe that

  1204. the Nicolaitans

  1205. believed the

  1206. heresy of

  1207. antinomianism,

  1208. which means

  1209. without the

  1210. law,

  1211. that they

  1212. had disregarded

  1213. that there

  1214. was any

  1215. necessary to

  1216. keep any

  1217. of the

  1218. commands of

  1219. God

  1220. any longer,

  1221. which is

  1222. just not

  1223. true.

  1224. It has

  1225. been

  1226. renounced

  1227. as a

  1228. heresy

  1229. again and

  1230. again and

  1231. again,

  1232. this morning

  1233. as well.

  1234. We're still

  1235. meant to

  1236. keep the

  1237. moral law

  1238. of God,

  1239. not to

  1240. be accepted

  1241. by God,

  1242. but out

  1243. of loving

  1244. obedience

  1245. to Him.

  1246. So probably

  1247. that's what

  1248. they had

  1249. hated,

  1250. was that

  1251. kind of

  1252. teaching.

  1253. But,

  1254. they were

  1255. failing to

  1256. love one

  1257. another.

  1258. They were

  1259. failing at

  1260. this,

  1261. the love

  1262. that they

  1263. had at

  1264. first,

  1265. which means

  1266. that they

  1267. were not

  1268. rightly

  1269. believing

  1270. the truth

  1271. of God's

  1272. love

  1273. for them.

  1274. They knew

  1275. about it.

  1276. They knew

  1277. about it,

  1278. but they

  1279. were failing

  1280. to believe

  1281. it the

  1282. way they

  1283. should.

  1284. So as we

  1285. lead our

  1286. people and

  1287. as we

  1288. protect our

  1289. people,

  1290. we want to

  1291. do so in

  1292. a way that

  1293. doesn't just

  1294. stack up

  1295. information in

  1296. their heads.

  1297. That they

  1298. would be able

  1299. to refute

  1300. false doctrine

  1301. and know

  1302. right doctrine,

  1303. which is

  1304. good.

  1305. We want to

  1306. lead people

  1307. and protect

  1308. people so

  1309. that they

  1310. will know

  1311. God

  1312. himself.

  1313. So faithful

  1314. shepherds

  1315. protect their

  1316. people.

  1317. Let me at

  1318. this point

  1319. give you

  1320. an unplanned

  1321. aside.

  1322. If you

  1323. are a

  1324. follower of

  1325. Jesus Christ

  1326. and you

  1327. are not

  1328. committed

  1329. to a

  1330. local

  1331. fellowship

  1332. of

  1333. believers,

  1334. you have

  1335. not been

  1336. given the

  1337. tools that

  1338. God intends

  1339. for your

  1340. protection.

  1341. You have

  1342. not joined

  1343. yourself to

  1344. a group of

  1345. people who

  1346. are meant

  1347. to work

  1348. with you,

  1349. to keep

  1350. you accountable,

  1351. not to

  1352. be your

  1353. assurance,

  1354. but being a

  1355. member of a

  1356. biblical church

  1357. is an

  1358. element of

  1359. assurance.

  1360. That a

  1361. group of

  1362. Christ followers

  1363. have said to

  1364. you,

  1365. we have a

  1366. confidence that

  1367. you are in

  1368. the faith.

  1369. The biblical

  1370. doctrine,

  1371. the not

  1372. often practiced,

  1373. but altogether

  1374. biblical

  1375. practice of

  1376. church

  1377. discipline is

  1378. about taking

  1379. sin seriously

  1380. and steering

  1381. people as

  1382. they should

  1383. away from

  1384. error and

  1385. to the

  1386. truth.

  1387. Loving

  1388. restoration,

  1389. walk in the

  1390. ways of

  1391. God,

  1392. it's the

  1393. best thing

  1394. for you.

  1395. We want

  1396. you to

  1397. know Him

  1398. and be

  1399. obedient to

  1400. Him,

  1401. to serve

  1402. Him as

  1403. you should.

  1404. The final

  1405. step of

  1406. church

  1407. discipline is

  1408. that a

  1409. person is

  1410. removed from

  1411. the fellowship

  1412. of a

  1413. church.

  1414. Because the

  1415. church no

  1416. longer can

  1417. be confident

  1418. that they

  1419. are in

  1420. fact in

  1421. the faith.

  1422. Their works

  1423. are evidencing

  1424. otherwise.

  1425. Their unrepentant

  1426. sin says

  1427. no.

  1428. So for

  1429. their sake,

  1430. we say we

  1431. just can't

  1432. say this

  1433. anymore.

  1434. We love

  1435. you and

  1436. we want

  1437. you to

  1438. come back

  1439. and be in

  1440. fellowship

  1441. with God

  1442. and in

  1443. fellowship

  1444. with the

  1445. church,

  1446. but we

  1447. just can't.

  1448. Yesterday I

  1449. heard a

  1450. quote by

  1451. Jay Adams,

  1452. a pastor

  1453. and a

  1454. newtetic

  1455. biblical

  1456. counselor.

  1457. And he

  1458. said this,

  1459. if you

  1460. are not

  1461. a member

  1462. of a

  1463. local

  1464. church,

  1465. you

  1466. have

  1467. excommunicated

  1468. yourself.

  1469. So be

  1470. part of

  1471. a biblical

  1472. church

  1473. with

  1474. faithful

  1475. shepherds,

  1476. a group

  1477. of people

  1478. who want

  1479. to love

  1480. you with

  1481. the truth

  1482. of the

  1483. gospel.

  1484. I would

  1485. suggest to

  1486. you that

  1487. you are

  1488. sinning

  1489. not to,

  1490. so do

  1491. so.

  1492. Okay,

  1493. back to

  1494. the script.

  1495. Number

  1496. four,

  1497. faithful

  1498. shepherds

  1499. pray

  1500. and

  1501. study.

  1502. Pray

  1503. and

  1504. study.

  1505. Verse

  1506. 32,

  1507. we're

  1508. back in

  1509. Acts 20

  1510. now.

  1511. Paul

  1512. says,

  1513. and now

  1514. I commend

  1515. you to

  1516. God.

  1517. And I

  1518. recognize

  1519. that this

  1520. text is

  1521. not

  1522. specifically

  1523. calling

  1524. the

  1525. shepherds,

  1526. these

  1527. elders in

  1528. Ephesus,

  1529. to pray.

  1530. But it

  1531. is another

  1532. example of

  1533. Paul and

  1534. his

  1535. commitment

  1536. to

  1537. prayer.

  1538. prayer.

  1539. And if

  1540. we rightly

  1541. understand

  1542. the gravity

  1543. of the

  1544. task of

  1545. faithfully

  1546. shepherding

  1547. God's

  1548. people,

  1549. we will

  1550. pray.

  1551. I find

  1552. my

  1553. prayerlessness

  1554. is most

  1555. often because

  1556. I don't

  1557. get the

  1558. gravity of

  1559. it.

  1560. It is a

  1561. serious,

  1562. serious

  1563. matter,

  1564. which I

  1565. am not

  1566. capable of

  1567. accomplishing

  1568. on my

  1569. own.

  1570. I must

  1571. cry out

  1572. to God

  1573. to help

  1574. me in

  1575. giving

  1576. leadership

  1577. in our

  1578. church

  1579. and to

  1580. my

  1581. family.

  1582. Prayer

  1583. expresses a

  1584. dependence

  1585. on God

  1586. and biblical

  1587. prayer lines

  1588. up our

  1589. wills with

  1590. His.

  1591. A

  1592. shepherd who

  1593. does not

  1594. pray

  1595. shepherds

  1596. in vain.

  1597. I love

  1598. the Latin

  1599. phrase

  1600. sine qua

  1601. non.

  1602. Knowing

  1603. Latin helps

  1604. me remember

  1605. things.

  1606. Maybe it

  1607. doesn't

  1608. for you.

  1609. Sine qua

  1610. non,

  1611. which the

  1612. reformers

  1613. applied to

  1614. prayer,

  1615. which means

  1616. without

  1617. which

  1618. nothing.

  1619. Sine qua

  1620. non.

  1621. At least

  1622. remember the

  1623. English.

  1624. Prayer

  1625. without

  1626. which

  1627. nothing.

  1628. God moves

  1629. in the hearts

  1630. of His

  1631. people to

  1632. pray and

  1633. He empowers

  1634. our lives

  1635. in our

  1636. praying.

  1637. And we

  1638. can pray

  1639. in confidence

  1640. that our

  1641. people would

  1642. know God

  1643. and walk

  1644. in His

  1645. ways.

  1646. Jesus

  1647. states in

  1648. John 14

    John 14:13

  1649. verse 13,

  1650. whatever you

  1651. ask in

  1652. my name,

  1653. and He's

  1654. not instructing

  1655. us just

  1656. to tack

  1657. His name

  1658. to the end

  1659. of any

  1660. prayer that

  1661. we would

  1662. pray.

  1663. What He's

  1664. saying is

  1665. whatever you

  1666. ask that

  1667. is consistent

  1668. with my

  1669. person,

  1670. in my

  1671. name,

  1672. with my

  1673. person,

  1674. consistent

  1675. with my

  1676. character,

  1677. and consistent

  1678. with my

  1679. commands,

  1680. which we

  1681. have here,

  1682. this I

  1683. will do,

  1684. that the

  1685. Father may

  1686. be glorified

  1687. in the

  1688. Son.

  1689. So we

  1690. can pray

  1691. with confidence

  1692. that God

  1693. would help

  1694. us in

  1695. giving

  1696. faithful

  1697. leadership

  1698. to our

  1699. people.

  1700. We can

  1701. pray that

  1702. with confidence

  1703. and know

  1704. that He'll

  1705. supply what

  1706. we need.

  1707. So my

  1708. encouragement to

  1709. you would be

  1710. to pray

  1711. and then

  1712. act.

  1713. Pray that

  1714. it'll work,

  1715. pray that

  1716. it'll give

  1717. you what

  1718. you need,

  1719. and do

  1720. so confidently,

  1721. and then

  1722. go lead

  1723. by the

  1724. Scripture's

  1725. standards.

  1726. So Paul

  1727. commends them

  1728. to God.

  1729. That's an

  1730. example in

  1731. prayer.

  1732. And he

  1733. also commends

  1734. them to

  1735. the Word

  1736. of His

  1737. grace.

  1738. The Word

  1739. of His

  1740. grace,

  1741. the Bible.

  1742. If we

  1743. are to look

  1744. to ourselves

  1745. to lead

  1746. and protect

  1747. our people,

  1748. then we

  1749. must be

  1750. students of

  1751. the Word.

  1752. We must

  1753. be.

  1754. We must

  1755. know it

  1756. and be

  1757. increasing

  1758. in our

  1759. knowledge

  1760. of it

  1761. and our

  1762. understanding

  1763. of its

  1764. application.

  1765. This means

  1766. we must

  1767. read.

  1768. I find a

  1769. Christian who

  1770. says they

  1771. don't like

  1772. to read

  1773. to be

  1774. inconsistent.

  1775. We have

  1776. to.

  1777. We have

  1778. to.

  1779. God's

  1780. very Word

  1781. is conveyed

  1782. to us

  1783. in words

  1784. recorded

  1785. on pages.

  1786. You have

  1787. to read.

  1788. It's been

  1789. a great

  1790. work of

  1791. missionaries

  1792. throughout

  1793. history

  1794. to educate

  1795. people,

  1796. to teach

  1797. them to

  1798. read so

  1799. that they

  1800. could read

  1801. the Word

  1802. of God.

  1803. What a

  1804. privilege

  1805. that we're

  1806. readers.

  1807. The people

  1808. who can't

  1809. read in

  1810. our congregation

  1811. are few

  1812. and were

  1813. probably

  1814. sitting on

  1815. the floor

  1816. earlier

  1817. this morning.

  1818. We have

  1819. the opportunity

  1820. to take

  1821. up and

  1822. read.

  1823. And beyond

  1824. the Scripture

  1825. as the most

  1826. important book

  1827. we could

  1828. ever read,

  1829. we have

  1830. such a wealth

  1831. of other

  1832. things to

  1833. read.

  1834. That's why

  1835. I'm

  1836. promoting

  1837. reading in

  1838. our church.

  1839. Books that

  1840. systematically

  1841. take themes

  1842. of the Bible

  1843. and lay them

  1844. out for us,

  1845. help us to

  1846. understand and

  1847. to comprehend.

  1848. We have

  1849. access to

  1850. the church

  1851. across history

  1852. which is

  1853. such a

  1854. blessing,

  1855. beloved.

  1856. I get to

  1857. sit down

  1858. on any

  1859. given afternoon

  1860. of the week

  1861. and have a

  1862. conversation

  1863. with Jonathan

  1864. Edwards.

  1865. It's a

  1866. wonderful thing

  1867. that I get to

  1868. sit with him

  1869. and hear all

  1870. that he has

  1871. to say

  1872. about the

  1873. Scripture.

  1874. It's a

  1875. great thing

  1876. that we get

  1877. to do

  1878. to pick

  1879. up and

  1880. to read.

  1881. If you don't

  1882. fancy yourself

  1883. a reader,

  1884. you need to

  1885. start working

  1886. at it.

  1887. You need to

  1888. become a

  1889. reader primarily

  1890. of the

  1891. Word of

  1892. God.

  1893. Read more,

  1894. read more

  1895. broadly,

  1896. read books

  1897. that speak

  1898. of God's

  1899. Word if

  1900. you're reading

  1901. books that

  1902. aren't God's

  1903. Word.

  1904. Paul says

  1905. to Timothy

  1906. 2 Timothy

  1907. 3, 16

  1908. and 17.

  1909. All Scripture

  1910. is breathed

  1911. out by

  1912. God.

  1913. He's the

  1914. very source

  1915. of it.

  1916. And it's

  1917. profitable.

  1918. It's profitable.

  1919. It's good

  1920. for us.

  1921. For teaching,

  1922. for reproof,

  1923. for correction,

  1924. and for

  1925. training in

  1926. righteousness.

  1927. These are all

  1928. just different

  1929. words that

  1930. give this

  1931. idea of

  1932. guiding in

  1933. the ways

  1934. of God.

  1935. Guiding

  1936. people to

  1937. God

  1938. himself.

  1939. 17,

  1940. that the

  1941. man of

  1942. God may

  1943. be complete,

  1944. equipped for

  1945. every good

  1946. work.

  1947. So if we're

  1948. to be

  1949. faithful

  1950. shepherds,

  1951. we must

  1952. pray.

  1953. We're

  1954. dependent on

  1955. God to

  1956. move into

  1957. work in

  1958. our activity.

  1959. And we

  1960. must study.

  1961. We must

  1962. know this

  1963. precious book

  1964. that is so

  1965. useful in

  1966. giving leadership

  1967. and protection

  1968. to our

  1969. people.

  1970. So faithful

  1971. shepherds

  1972. pray and

  1973. study.

  1974. Number

  1975. five.

  1976. Faithful

  1977. shepherds

  1978. serve the

  1979. weak.

  1980. Faithful

  1981. shepherds

  1982. serve the

  1983. weak.

  1984. Verse

  1985. 33-35

  1986. of Acts

  1987. 20.

  1988. For the

  1989. sake of

  1990. time,

  1991. I won't

  1992. belabor this

  1993. point.

  1994. The

  1995. faithful

  1996. shepherd

  1997. does not

  1998. look to

  1999. his own

  2000. self-interest

  2001. but rather

  2002. serves

  2003. others.

  2004. Humbles

  2005. himself,

  2006. becomes the

  2007. least of

  2008. all.

  2009. Someday he'll

  2010. be the

  2011. greatest of

  2012. all, but

  2013. here the

  2014. least of

  2015. all, a

  2016. servant to

  2017. all.

  2018. Not lording

  2019. this over

  2020. people like

  2021. the Gentiles

  2022. do, but

  2023. becoming a

  2024. servant of

  2025. all.

  2026. Paul said

  2027. to the

  2028. Corinthian

  2029. church in

  2030. 2 Corinthians

  2031. 12-15,

  2032. I will

  2033. most gladly

  2034. spend and

  2035. be spent

  2036. for your

  2037. souls.

  2038. The

  2039. faithful

  2040. shepherd

  2041. puts

  2042. aside

  2043. his

  2044. self-interest

  2045. and pours

  2046. out his

  2047. life for

  2048. the sake

  2049. of his

  2050. people.

  2051. Dads,

  2052. this needs

  2053. to be

  2054. true of

  2055. us.

  2056. We are

  2057. not meant

  2058. to have

  2059. family so

  2060. that they

  2061. can serve

  2062. us.

  2063. We have

  2064. family so

  2065. that we

  2066. can serve

  2067. them to

  2068. the glory

  2069. of God.

  2070. Empty

  2071. yourself.

  2072. Lay your

  2073. life down

  2074. on the

  2075. altar of

  2076. Christ and

  2077. then get

  2078. up and

  2079. love your

  2080. family with

  2081. the gospel

  2082. of Jesus.

  2083. And this

  2084. is not

  2085. burdensome.

  2086. This is not

  2087. burdensome.

  2088. Paul said,

  2089. I will

  2090. most gladly

  2091. spend and

  2092. be spent

  2093. for your

  2094. souls.

  2095. So faithful

  2096. shepherds

  2097. serve the

  2098. weak.

  2099. Just in

  2100. case any

  2101. of the

  2102. ladies think

  2103. I'm calling

  2104. them weak,

  2105. I'm not.

  2106. Sixth,

  2107. faithful

  2108. shepherds

  2109. love and

  2110. are loved.

  2111. Love and

  2112. are loved.

  2113. Verse 36,

  2114. when he had

  2115. said these

  2116. things he

  2117. knelt down

  2118. and prayed

  2119. with them

  2120. all and

  2121. there was

  2122. much weeping

  2123. on the

  2124. part of

  2125. all.

  2126. They

  2127. embraced

  2128. Paul and

  2129. kissed

  2130. him,

  2131. being sorrowful

  2132. most of

  2133. all.

  2134. Most of

  2135. all,

  2136. he said

  2137. some things

  2138. to them,

  2139. some charges,

  2140. right?

  2141. There's going

  2142. to be error

  2143. in the

  2144. church,

  2145. protect the

  2146. flock.

  2147. Most of

  2148. all,

  2149. the reason

  2150. that they're

  2151. so sad

  2152. is because

  2153. he had

  2154. said that

  2155. he would

  2156. not see

  2157. his face

  2158. again and

  2159. they accompanied

  2160. him to

  2161. the ship.

  2162. So I

  2163. take the

  2164. all to

  2165. mean that

  2166. Paul also

  2167. wept.

  2168. There was

  2169. much weeping

  2170. on the

  2171. part of

  2172. all.

  2173. If you

  2174. do not

  2175. love your

  2176. people,

  2177. sacrificially

  2178. love your

  2179. people,

  2180. most

  2181. most

  2182. gladly

  2183. willing

  2184. to

  2185. lay

  2186. your

  2187. life

  2188. down

  2189. for

  2190. your

  2191. people,

  2192. pray

  2193. with

  2194. desperation

  2195. that

  2196. God

  2197. would

  2198. work

  2199. in

  2200. you

  2201. a

  2202. love

  2203. for

  2204. them.

  2205. You

  2206. will

  2207. not

  2208. effectively

  2209. serve

  2210. them

  2211. until

  2212. you're

  2213. ready

  2214. to

  2215. sacrifice

  2216. for

  2217. them.

  2218. If

  2219. you

  2220. love

  2221. people

  2222. well,

  2223. they

  2224. will

  2225. love

  2226. you.

  2227. Paul

  2228. wrote

  2229. to the

  2230. Corinthian

  2231. church

  2232. in

  2233. 1 Corinthians

  2234. 13,

  2235. which I'd

  2236. like

  2237. for

  2238. you

  2239. to

  2240. turn

  2241. with

  2242. me

  2243. to

  2244. we

  2245. will

  2246. conclude

  2247. with

  2248. this.

  2249. He wrote

  2250. in

  2251. 1 Corinthians

  2252. 13

  2253. concerning

  2254. love,

  2255. the famous

  2256. love chapter

  2257. which is

  2258. so often

  2259. read

  2260. at weddings

  2261. and certainly

  2262. applies in

  2263. that setting

  2264. but it's

  2265. written to

  2266. the church.

  2267. It has a

  2268. much broader

  2269. meaning,

  2270. a much more

  2271. layered and

  2272. textured

  2273. meaning

  2274. for our

  2275. everyday

  2276. lives.

  2277. And

  2278. Paul

  2279. elevates,

  2280. he gives

  2281. us a

  2282. high

  2283. view

  2284. of what

  2285. love

  2286. looks like.

  2287. Unconditioned,

  2288. right?

  2289. In the

  2290. way that

  2291. God has

  2292. loved us,

  2293. we then

  2294. turn around

  2295. and we

  2296. love

  2297. others.

  2298. Paul

  2299. wrote

  2300. this,

  2301. if I

  2302. speak in

  2303. the tongues

  2304. of men

  2305. and of

  2306. angels

  2307. but have

  2308. not

  2309. love,

  2310. I am

  2311. a noisy

  2312. gong

  2313. or a

  2314. clanging

  2315. symbol,

  2316. worthless,

  2317. no good.

  2318. And if I

  2319. have prophetic

  2320. powers and

  2321. understand all

  2322. mysteries and

  2323. all knowledge

  2324. and if I

  2325. have all

  2326. faith so

  2327. as to

  2328. remove

  2329. mountains

  2330. but have

  2331. not love,

  2332. I am

  2333. nothing.

  2334. If I

  2335. give away

  2336. all I

  2337. have and

  2338. if I

  2339. deliver up

  2340. my body

  2341. to be

  2342. burned

  2343. but have

  2344. not love,

  2345. I gain

  2346. nothing.

  2347. Love is

  2348. patient

  2349. and kind.

  2350. Love does

  2351. not envy

  2352. or boast.

  2353. It is

  2354. not arrogant

  2355. or rude.

  2356. It does

  2357. not insist

  2358. on its

  2359. own way.

  2360. It is

  2361. not irritable

  2362. or resentful.

  2363. It does

  2364. not rejoice

  2365. at wrongdoing

  2366. but rejoices

  2367. with the

  2368. truth.

  2369. Love

  2370. bears

  2371. all

  2372. things,

  2373. believes

  2374. all

  2375. things,

  2376. hopes

  2377. all

  2378. things,

  2379. endures

  2380. all

  2381. things.

  2382. Love

  2383. never

  2384. ends.

  2385. As for

  2386. prophecies,

  2387. they will

  2388. pass away.

  2389. As for

  2390. tongues,

  2391. they will

  2392. cease.

  2393. As for

  2394. knowledge,

  2395. it will

  2396. pass away.

  2397. For we

  2398. know in

  2399. part and

  2400. we

  2401. prophesy

  2402. in part,

  2403. but when

  2404. the perfect

  2405. comes,

  2406. the partial

  2407. will pass

  2408. away.

  2409. When I

  2410. was a

  2411. child,

  2412. I spoke

  2413. like a

  2414. child,

  2415. I

  2416. thought

  2417. like a

  2418. child,

  2419. I

  2420. reasoned

  2421. like a

  2422. child.

  2423. When I

  2424. became a

  2425. man,

  2426. I gave

  2427. up

  2428. childish

  2429. ways.

  2430. For now

  2431. we see

  2432. in a

  2433. mirror

  2434. dimly,

  2435. but then

  2436. face

  2437. to

  2438. face.

  2439. Now

  2440. I

  2441. know

  2442. in

  2443. part,

  2444. then I

  2445. shall

  2446. know

  2447. fully,

  2448. even

  2449. as I

  2450. have

  2451. been

  2452. fully

  2453. known.

  2454. So

  2455. now,

  2456. faith,

  2457. hope,

  2458. and love

  2459. abide.

  2460. These

  2461. three,

  2462. but the

  2463. greatest

  2464. of these

  2465. is love.

  2466. So

  2467. faithful

  2468. shepherds

  2469. look after

  2470. themselves,

  2471. lead their

  2472. people,

  2473. protect

  2474. their

  2475. people,

  2476. pray and

  2477. study,

  2478. serve

  2479. the

  2480. weak,

  2481. and they

  2482. love

  2483. and are

  2484. loved.

  2485. Let's

  2486. pray

  2487. together.
