  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word, which I pray you have with you, that it's well read and treasured in your hearts this morning.

  2. And turn with me to the book of Acts, chapter 25.

    Acts 25 chapter mention

  3. If you were with us last spring and then not for the summer and you're back now, yes, we are still in the book of Acts.

  4. We are hastening our way to its end, however, moving rather quickly, not because we are tired of the book of Acts,

  5. but because the story hastens us to the end.

  6. Back in chapter 21, Paul's back in Jerusalem and he's arrested there for no good reason.

  7. But the Jews bring up charges against him, blaspheming the temple, causing false worship of God.

  8. And the Romans, evil men that they were, are used by God to rush in and to rescue Paul from certain death at the hands of the Jews.

  9. And we've been walking now through the subsequent chapters, looking at various trials that Paul is standing.

  10. Different places have been.

  11. Last week, chapter 24, he stood trial before the Roman governor, Felix.

  12. And they concluded there was nothing really he could be charged for, but he held him anyway for two years.

  13. And at the end of chapter 24, Felix is, he wasn't a very good governor, so he's removed from his post.

  14. And he's replaced by a man named Festus.

  15. So we saw that at the very end of chapter 24, verse 27 says,

  16. When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus.

  17. And desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison.

  18. And so today we're going to look at chapters 25 and 26.

  19. Yes, both chapters all together, although we'll come and focus in on just a few verses.

  20. But I am going to read it for our benefit.

  21. It only takes about eight minutes, so hang with me in the text.

  22. I'll pause from time to time and just make some comments, some clarifying comments,

  23. hopefully to keep you on the same page.

  24. You're understanding what's happening in this episode of Paul's life.

  25. But before I do that, let me just introduce to you, in real brief, three characters that you're going to hear in this story.

  26. Obviously, we have Paul as a primary character.

  27. Festus, who I already mentioned, Roman governor of Judea, successor to Felix.

  28. We have King Agrippa, who was the Jewish client ruler of Judea.

  29. And that is to say, he ruled the region that was ruled by a higher power, which in our story is Rome.

  30. He was granted power by Rome to rule the religious life of the Jews in Judea.

  31. He would have appointed the high priest, and he would have judged matters of Jewish law.

  32. So he's underneath the authority of Rome, but still holds quite a bit of power for Jewish worship.

  33. And then we're also going to see Bernice, who is Agrippa's younger sister.

  34. Just as an interesting historical aside to you, it's most likely that they were also lovers.

  35. So you, King Agrippa, but this is what's happening.

  36. This is why she's probably with him at this trial.

  37. So, beloved, this is God's word to us.

  38. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  39. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  40. We see in Acts 25, verse 1, Luke writes,

    Acts 25:1

  41. Now, three days after Festus had arrived in the province, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.

  42. I'll stop for a moment here to remind you that Caesarea was the Roman capital of Judea,

  43. but Jerusalem is still the center of Jewish life.

  44. It's in a higher elevation, so everything goes up to Jerusalem or down from Jerusalem.

  45. And he travels there to earn favor with the Jewish population.

  46. Festus, as a governor, a Roman governor, was charged with keeping the peace in the province.

  47. And so he goes to pay his dues, as it were.

  48. We also will see that he's apt to grant favors to the Jews to gain their approval of him being there in that region.

  49. Verse 2,

  50. And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews laid out their case against Paul.

  51. And they urged him, asking as a favor against Paul that he summon him to Jerusalem,

  52. because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way.

  53. Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea, and that he himself intended to go there shortly.

  54. So, said he, let the men of authority among you go down with me,

  55. and if there's anything wrong about the man, let them bring charges against him.

  56. After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea.

  57. And the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought.

  58. But when he had arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him,

  59. bringing many and serious charges against him that they could not prove.

  60. Paul argued in his defense,

  61. Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar,

  62. have I committed any offense.

  63. And this is a duplication of Paul's previous trial before Felix,

  64. which was two years prior.

  65. Standing in the same place, he's now again having to defend against these same false accusations.

  66. Verse 9.

  67. But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul,

  68. Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried on these charges before me?

  69. But Paul said,

  70. To Caesar you have appealed.

  71. To Caesar you shall go.

  72. Now, Paul's appeal to Caesar was his right as a Roman citizen.

  73. Although Festus did not have to grant the request to Paul,

  74. the complication of the matter and his charge to keep the peace in Judea

  75. made Paul's appeal a convenient out for Festus.

  76. It was his chance to say,

  77. Oh, well then okay.

  78. Festus was a fairly unseasoned governor.

  79. He was very young.

  80. And you'll note in verse 12 that he confers with his council.

  81. Is this a thing we should do?

  82. Is he within his right as a Roman citizen?

  83. They say,

  84. Yes, he is.

  85. And he uses it as an opportunity to escape what could happen

  86. if he doesn't put Paul on trial.

  87. Now remember that after Paul's trial before the Sanhedrin in chapter 23,

  88. when he's experiencing a great discouragement,

  89. Jesus shows up and encourages him with the following from Acts chapter 23 verse 11.

    Acts 23:11

  90. Luke records this,

  91. The following night the Lord stood by him and said,

  92. Take courage,

  93. for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem,

  94. so you must also testify in Rome.

  95. So Paul has been given clear instruction by Jesus himself, right?

  96. Jesus encourages him by saying,

  97. I'm going to preserve your life unto Rome.

  98. I still have a purpose for you to go to that place.

  99. And Paul seizes the opportunity to bring this to pass.

  100. He exercises his Roman right and he says,

  101. I appeal to Caesar.

  102. Verse 13.

  103. Now when some days had passed,

  104. Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.

  105. And as they stayed there many days,

  106. Festus laid Paul's case before the king saying,

  107. There is a man left prisoner by Felix.

  108. And when I was at Jerusalem,

  109. the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid out their case against him,

  110. asking for a sentence of condemnation against him.

  111. I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans

  112. to give up anyone before the accused met the accusers face to face

  113. and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him.

  114. So when they came together here,

  115. I made no delay,

  116. but on the next day took my seat in the tribunal

  117. and ordered the man to be brought.

  118. When the accusers stood up,

  119. They brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed.

  120. He's saying they brought silly charges.

  121. That wasn't what I thought they were going to be.

  122. Verse 19.

  123. Rather,

  124. they had certain points of dispute with him

  125. about their own religion

  126. and about a certain Jesus

  127. who was dead,

  128. but whom Paul asserted to be alive.

  129. Being at a loss,

  130. how to investigate these questions,

  131. I asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem

  132. and be tried there regarding them.

  133. And I love what he basically says is,

  134. I don't have a way of affirming whether or not Jesus is alive.

  135. So I asked him if he wanted to go to another trial.

  136. Verse 21.

  137. But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody

  138. for the decision of the emperor,

  139. I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.

  140. Then Agrippa said to Festus,

  141. I would like to hear the man myself.

  142. Tomorrow, said he,

  143. you will hear him.

  144. So on the next day,

  145. Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp

  146. and they entered the audience hall

  147. with the military tribunes

  148. and the prominent men of the city.

  149. Then at the command of Festus,

  150. Paul was brought in.

  151. And Festus said,

  152. King Agrippa and all who are present with us,

  153. you see this man about whom

  154. the whole Jewish people petitioned me,

  155. both in Jerusalem and here,

  156. shouting that he ought not to live any longer.

  157. But I found that he had done nothing deserving death.

  158. And as he himself appealed to the emperor,

  159. I decided to go ahead and send him.

  160. But I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him.

  161. Therefore, I have brought him before you all

  162. and especially before you, King Agrippa,

  163. so that after we have examined him,

  164. I may have something to write.

  165. For it seems to me unreasonable in sending a prisoner

  166. not to indicate the charges against him.

  167. So it's interesting to note at this point

  168. that Festus isn't even sure

  169. under what charges he would send Paul to Rome.

  170. It's very vague,

  171. the charges that are placed against him.

  172. He's hoping to gain some clarity

  173. in matters of Jewish religious law.

  174. All of the injustice that Paul is experiencing

  175. is due to his proclamation of Jesus as the Christ.

  176. And this is not inconsistent with Jewish belief.

  177. They believed in a Messiah,

  178. particularly the part of Judaism that he was,

  179. a Pharisee.

  180. They believed in the resurrection of the dead.

  181. He's just saying,

  182. this has happened.

  183. The thing that you guys believe,

  184. I believe,

  185. but I believe it rightly

  186. because Jesus is the Christ.

  187. And this is infuriating to them.

  188. Just as Jesus was unjustly tried and crucified,

  189. Paul is being held for crimes

  190. that he did not commit.

  191. The student is certainly not greater than his master.

  192. Chapter 26, verse 1.

  193. So Agrippa said to Paul,

  194. you have permission to speak for yourself.

  195. Then Paul stretched out his hand

  196. and made his defense.

  197. I consider myself fortunate

  198. that it is before you, King Agrippa,

  199. I'm going to make my defense today

  200. against all the accusations of the Jews,

  201. especially because you are familiar

  202. with all the customs and controversies of the Jews.

  203. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.

  204. My manner of life from my youth,

  205. spent from the beginning among my own nation

  206. and in Jerusalem,

  207. is known by all the Jews.

  208. They have known for a long time,

  209. if they are willing to testify,

  210. that according to the strictest party of our religion,

  211. I have lived as a Pharisee.

  212. And now I stand here on trial

  213. because of my hope and the promise

  214. made by God to our fathers,

  215. to which our twelve tribes hope to attain

  216. as they earnestly worship night and day.

  217. And for this hope I am accused by Jews, O King.

  218. Why is it thought incredible by any of you

  219. that God raises the dead?

  220. I myself was convinced

  221. that I ought to do many things

  222. in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

  223. And I did so in Jerusalem.

  224. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison

  225. after receiving authority from the chief priests,

  226. but when they were put to death,

  227. I cast my vote against them.

  228. So he's saying,

  229. I was a Pharisee,

  230. the strictest order of Jews,

  231. looking to the promise of the Old Testament

  232. that the prophets had made.

  233. And I was zealous against what's called the way,

  234. against Jesus of Nazareth.

  235. We know that Paul was present

  236. at the stoning of Stephen,

  237. the first Christian martyr.

  238. It would appear that he voted for the death of others

  239. as well that may not be recorded in the book of Acts.

  240. He possibly, quite possibly,

  241. was part of the Sanhedrin,

  242. part of that ruling group of Jews.

  243. Well known.

  244. He's saying,

  245. these men know the kind of Pharisee that I was.

  246. So it's likely that he's amongst his peers

  247. in Judaism being accused.

  248. Verse 11.

  249. And I punished them often in all the synagogues

  250. and tried to make them blaspheme.

  251. And in raging fury against them,

  252. I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

  253. In this connection,

  254. I journeyed to Damascus

  255. with the authority and commission of the chief priests.

  256. At midday, O King,

  257. I saw on the way a light from heaven,

  258. brighter than the sun,

  259. that shone around me

  260. and those who journeyed with me.

  261. And when we had all fallen to the ground,

  262. I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language,

  263. Saul, Saul,

  264. why are you persecuting me?

  265. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.

  266. And so that you're not distracted by that.

  267. Goads were sharpened rods used to prod cattle.

  268. So all that Jesus is saying to him,

  269. and he would have understood,

  270. is that it's futile for you to resist

  271. God's will in the world.

  272. What a silly thing for a cow to do

  273. to kick against a stick made

  274. to make them move forward.

  275. Verse 15.

  276. And I said,

  277. Who are you, Lord?

  278. And the Lord said,

  279. I am Jesus,

  280. whom you are persecuting.

  281. But rise and stand upon your feet,

  282. for I have appeared to you for this purpose,

  283. to appoint you as a servant and witness

  284. to the things in which you have seen me

  285. and to those in which I will appear to you,

  286. delivering you from your people

  287. and from the Gentiles

  288. to whom I am sending you,

  289. to open their eyes

  290. so that they may turn from darkness to light

  291. and from the power of Satan to God,

  292. that they may receive forgiveness of sins

  293. and a place among those

  294. who are sanctified by faith in me.

  295. Therefore, O King Agrippa,

  296. I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,

  297. but declared first to those in Damascus,

  298. then in Jerusalem,

  299. and throughout all the region of Judea,

  300. and also to the Gentiles,

  301. that they should repent and turn to God,

  302. performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.

  303. For this reason,

  304. the Jews seized me in the temple

  305. and tried to kill me.

  306. To this day,

  307. I have had the help that comes from God,

  308. and so I stand here testifying,

  309. both to small and great,

  310. saying nothing but what the prophets of Moses said

  311. would come to pass,

  312. that the Christ must suffer,

  313. and that by being the first to rise from the dead,

  314. He will proclaim light both to our people

  315. and to the Gentiles.

  316. And as he was saying these things in his defense,

  317. Festus said with a loud voice,

  318. Paul, you are out of your mind.

  319. Your great learning is driving you out of your mind.

  320. But Paul said,

  321. I am not out of my mind,

  322. most excellent Festus,

  323. but I am speaking true and rational words.

  324. For the King knows about these things,

  325. and to Him I speak boldly.

  326. For I am persuaded that none of these things

  327. has escaped his notice,

  328. for this has not been done in a corner.

  329. That is to say,

  330. the spread of the gospel,

  331. the teaching of the gospel,

  332. wasn't hidden from him.

  333. He was fully aware of the teaching of the gospel

  334. of Jesus Christ.

  335. Verse 27, and we're almost there.

  336. King Agrippa,

  337. do you believe the prophets?

  338. I know that you believe.

  339. And Agrippa said to Paul,

  340. in a short time would you persuade me

  341. to be a Christian?

  342. And Paul said,

  343. whether short or long,

  344. I would to God that not only you,

  345. but also all who hear me this day

  346. might become such as I am,

  347. except for these chains.

  348. Then the King rose,

  349. and the governor and Bernice,

  350. and those who were sitting with them.

  351. When they had withdrawn,

  352. they said to one another,

  353. this man is doing nothing

  354. to deserve death or imprisonment.

  355. And Agrippa said to Festus,

  356. this man could have been set free

  357. if he had not appealed to Caesar.

  358. So, I have posited to you before

  359. that I believe it is correct

  360. to think of Luke's account,

  361. most often referred to

  362. as the Acts of the Apostles,

  363. as the second of a two-volume work.

  364. The first, we call the Gospel according to Luke,

  365. is an account of Jesus' earthly ministry.

  366. The second is an account

  367. of Jesus' ascended ministry

  368. in the life of His apostles

  369. by the agency of the Holy Spirit.

  370. This is why I prefer to call this work

  371. the Acts of the Holy Spirit

  372. or the Acts of the Ascended Jesus.

  373. I'm sure I never will,

  374. but if I ever work as a Bible translator,

  375. that's the way my suggestion would go.

  376. In Matthew 28, verses 18-20,

    Matthew 28:18–20

  377. before Jesus ascended,

  378. He said,

  379. I hope you're familiar with this,

  380. He said to His apostles and to us,

  381. all authority in heaven and on earth

  382. has been given to Me.

  383. Go therefore and make disciples

  384. of all nations,

  385. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  386. and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  387. teaching them to observe

  388. all that I have commanded you,

  389. and behold, I am with you always

  390. to the end of the age.

  391. He says, in essence,

  392. I possess all power over all things,

  393. and I want you to go and make disciples.

  394. Don't be troubled in your making of disciples,

  395. for My power, My provision,

  396. and My presence will be with you.

  397. We often misread this, right?

  398. The Great Commission,

  399. the command for us to go on,

  400. to go and work for Jesus,

  401. and miss that He so carefully sandwiches

  402. in the middle of us going and making disciples

  403. that the authority belongs to Him

  404. and that He is with us.

  405. He's made these beautiful promises for us

  406. in the process of our disciple-making,

  407. of Paul's disciple-making.

  408. And how is it that Jesus' promise is accomplished?

  409. How is it that He is with us?

  410. His authority and His power is with us.

  411. Acts 1.8.

  412. Again, before Jesus is ascended,

  413. He says,

  414. You will receive power

  415. when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  416. and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem

  417. and in all Judea and Samaria

  418. and to the end of the earth.

  419. The early disciples received the Spirit

  420. in a unique way on the day of Pentecost.

  421. And now, all who place saving faith

  422. in Jesus Christ have been given the Spirit.

  423. And that Spirit produces in us

  424. obedience to Jesus' commands.

  425. Observe Paul's immediate obedience

  426. from our text today.

  427. Chapter 26, verse 19 and following.

  428. He says,

  429. Therefore, O King Agrippa,

  430. I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.

  431. But declared first to those in Damascus.

  432. This is where He was, right?

  433. He was in Damascus,

  434. and He began immediately

  435. to be a witness to who Jesus is.

  436. Then, in Jerusalem,

  437. so catch Acts 1.8,

  438. in Jerusalem,

  439. and throughout all the region of Judea,

  440. and also to the Gentiles,

  441. which would be to say,

  442. to Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  443. That's an immediate obedience

  444. to what Jesus said would happen

  445. in Acts 1.8.

  446. So, Jesus' earthly ministry

  447. is continued in His ascended ministry

  448. in the lives of His followers

  449. by the agency of the Holy Spirit.

  450. Beloved, that's where we find ourselves today,

  451. in the continuation of that ministry.

  452. Luke ceased recording

  453. at the end of Acts 28.

  454. But the church lives on

  455. and carries the ministry of Christ

  456. as He is with us

  457. and as He has all authority.

  458. So today, let's observe

  459. six things that Jesus works to do

  460. through Paul and us.

  461. So this is your outline for today.

  462. Six things that Jesus works to do,

  463. aims to do,

  464. through Paul,

  465. and through us.

  466. Number one,

  467. to go and tell.

  468. To go and tell.

  469. Chapter 26, verse 16.

  470. In the middle of verse 17,

  471. Jesus says,

  472. But rise and stand upon your feet,

  473. for I have appeared to you

  474. for this purpose.

  475. To appoint you as a servant

  476. and witness to the things

  477. in which you have seen Me

  478. and to those in which

  479. I will appear to you.

  480. In verse 17,

  481. the middle portion,

  482. to whom,

  483. the Gentiles,

  484. to whom I am sending you.

  485. Jesus sent Paul

  486. and He sends us

  487. to be a servant

  488. and witness

  489. to what He had done

  490. and to what He would do.

  491. Jesus emptied Himself

  492. of the glories of Heaven

  493. to become a man

  494. in order to be

  495. a servant

  496. and a witness

  497. to the Father.

  498. And He said in John 20,

    John 20:21

  499. verse 21,

  500. As the Father has sent Me,

  501. even so,

  502. I am sending you.

  503. So,

  504. go and tell.

  505. This is God's will

  506. for you

  507. in Christ Jesus.

  508. And in our going and telling,

  509. Jesus intends to save

  510. all who call upon His name,

  511. all who believe in Him

  512. for their salvation,

  513. all who He died

  514. to save.

  515. Jesus' ascended ministry

  516. is the justification

  517. and sanctification

  518. of His church.

  519. So we can have

  520. a great confidence

  521. in our going and telling

  522. as we are merely tools

  523. in the hands

  524. of Him

  525. who all authority

  526. in Heaven and on Earth

  527. has been given.

  528. We can join with Paul

  529. in saying,

  530. Romans 1,

    Romans 1:16

  531. verse 16,

  532. For I am not ashamed

  533. of the Gospel,

  534. for it is the power

  535. of God

  536. for salvation

  537. to everyone

  538. who believes.

  539. In Paul's telling

  540. of Jesus' words

  541. to him

  542. on the Damascus road,

  543. he presses further

  544. that confidence.

  545. Look at the following things

  546. that Jesus works to do

  547. through Paul

  548. and through us.

  549. That was number one,

  550. to go and to tell.

  551. Number two,

  552. to open the eyes

  553. of unbelievers.

  554. Jesus works to do this

  555. through Paul

  556. and through us.

  557. The first part of verse 18,

  558. to open their eyes.

  559. Paul was made blind

  560. on the Damascus road

  561. to later be given sight.

  562. In the same way,

  563. Jesus makes those blinded

  564. to the truth

  565. able to see

  566. and live.

  567. Paul wrote to the

  568. Corinthian believers

  569. in 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:4

  570. verse 4,

  571. In their case,

  572. those who don't believe,

  573. in their case,

  574. the God of this world

  575. has blinded the minds

  576. of the unbelievers

  577. to keep them

  578. from seeing

  579. the light of the gospel

  580. of the glory

  581. of Christ

  582. who is the image

  583. of God.

  584. So,

  585. unbelievers

  586. have darkened

  587. vision,

  588. darkened hearts.

  589. They cannot see

  590. the glorious truth

  591. of the gospel.

  592. But,

  593. our text this morning

  594. tells us

  595. that Jesus

  596. aims through

  597. our evangelism

  598. to bring about

  599. spiritual sight,

  600. to take the spiritually

  601. blind

  602. and give them

  603. sight.

  604. But how?

  605. How is it that

  606. He works this?

  607. Paul goes on

  608. in 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:6

  609. verse 6,

  610. and saying,

  611. For God who said,

  612. Let light shine

  613. out of darkness,

  614. has shown in our hearts

  615. to give the light

  616. of the knowledge

  617. of the glory of God

  618. in the face

  619. of Jesus Christ.

  620. Paul states

  621. that the all-powerful God

  622. who spoke light

  623. into existence,

  624. said it

  625. and it appeared,

  626. births believing faith

  627. into the hearts

  628. of men.

  629. So,

  630. when Jesus says

  631. to Paul,

  632. I am sending you

  633. to open their eyes,

  634. we should rightly

  635. understand

  636. that we are

  637. instruments

  638. in His saving

  639. purpose.

  640. God saves people

  641. through the proclamation

  642. of the Gospel.

  643. So,

  644. we go and

  645. proclaim

  646. as God

  647. works

  648. to make the blind

  649. see.

  650. Jesus also

  651. works

  652. in the life

  653. of Paul

  654. and in our lives

  655. to turn

  656. unbelievers

  657. from darkness

  658. to light.

  659. the second part

  660. of verse 18.

  661. 18b,

  662. if you will.

  663. To open their eyes

  664. so that

  665. they may turn

  666. from darkness

  667. to light.

  668. The heart

  669. of an unbeliever

  670. is dark.

  671. John writes

  672. in 1 John 1

    1 John 1:5–7

  673. verses 5-7,

  674. this is the message

  675. we have heard

  676. from Him

  677. and proclaim

  678. to you

  679. that God

  680. is light

  681. and in Him

  682. is no darkness

  683. at all.

  684. If we say

  685. we have fellowship

  686. with Him

  687. while we walk

  688. in darkness,

  689. we lie

  690. and do not

  691. practice

  692. the truth.

  693. So,

  694. these metaphors

  695. are being used

  696. for the way

  697. of righteousness

  698. and the way

  699. of wickedness.

  700. The light

  701. is righteousness

  702. and the darkness

  703. is wickedness.

  704. John goes on

  705. to say,

  706. but if we walk

  707. in the light

  708. as He is in the light,

  709. we have fellowship

  710. with one another

  711. and the blood

  712. of Jesus His Son

  713. cleanses us

  714. from all sin.

  715. So,

  716. Jesus works

  717. to make the unbelievers

  718. see with spiritual eyes

  719. so that they will not

  720. walk in the darkness

  721. in the evil ways

  722. of the world

  723. but in the light

  724. of the truth.

  725. And it is good

  726. to be in the light.

  727. Jesus also works

  728. works

  729. to open the eyes

  730. of unbelievers.

  731. Number four,

  732. to deliver unbelievers

  733. from the power

  734. of Satan.

  735. We'll call it

  736. 18c,

  737. verse 18c,

  738. so that they may

  739. turn from the power

  740. of Satan

  741. to God.

  742. The unbeliever

  743. is turned from the power

  744. of Satan to God

  745. through the giving

  746. of spiritual sight

  747. because Satan's

  748. only power

  749. is the power

  750. of deception.

  751. In John 8,

    John 8:44

  752. verse 44,

  753. Jesus calls Satan

  754. the father of lies.

  755. In Ephesians 6,

    Ephesians 6:11

  756. verse 11,

  757. Paul instructs believers

  758. to,

  759. in order to avoid

  760. the powers of the world,

  761. put on the whole

  762. armor of God

  763. that you may be able

  764. to stand against

  765. the schemes

  766. of the devil.

  767. And he lists

  768. as the first

  769. and last

  770. metaphorical items

  771. to put on

  772. as the armor of God.

  773. In verse 14,

  774. the belt of

  775. truth.

  776. In verse 17,

  777. the sword

  778. of the Spirit,

  779. which is the

  780. Word of God,

  781. which is the

  782. Scripture.

  783. Scripture.

  784. Gospel proclamation

  785. has such great power

  786. because by it,

  787. Jesus makes people

  788. believe the truth.

  789. He unbinds them

  790. from the many

  791. varied deceptions

  792. of Satan

  793. and turns their hearts

  794. toward the truth.

  795. If you are in Christ

  796. today,

  797. if you have believed

  798. in Him,

  799. it is because belief

  800. has been worked

  801. in you.

  802. You have believed

  803. the truth

  804. because you are

  805. a child of God

  806. and no longer

  807. a child of the devil.

  808. Well,

  809. Jesus works this

  810. through the life

  811. of Paul

  812. and in our lives

  813. as well.

  814. He also works

  815. to bring about,

  816. and we are going

  817. to take five

  818. and six together,

  819. to grant

  820. unbelievers

  821. forgiveness

  822. of sins.

  823. Five.

  824. Number five.

  825. And number six,

  826. to give unbelievers

  827. a place

  828. in the kingdom.

  829. The last part

  830. of verse 18.

  831. 18D.

  832. That they may receive

  833. forgiveness of sins

  834. and a place

  835. among those

  836. who are sanctified

  837. by faith

  838. in me.

  839. That is to say

  840. that by believing

  841. in Jesus Christ,

  842. they would be

  843. justified.

  844. To be justified

  845. is to be declared

  846. righteous.

  847. But it has two

  848. components to it.

  849. It's a legal

  850. declaration.

  851. We stand before God

  852. and we're declared

  853. justified.

  854. And the two sides

  855. of that are

  856. the forgiveness

  857. of sin,

  858. this infinite debt

  859. that we could not

  860. pay because of

  861. our infinite

  862. disobedience

  863. against an infinite

  864. God.

  865. The darkness

  866. not able to dwell

  867. with the light.

  868. We needed

  869. forgiveness of sin.

  870. There's nothing

  871. we could do

  872. in order to gain

  873. that forgiveness.

  874. forgiveness.

  875. But we have it

  876. in Jesus'

  877. sacrifice

  878. on our behalf.

  879. He was put forth

  880. as a propitiation,

  881. as a replacement

  882. sacrifice

  883. for us.

  884. He stood

  885. in our place.

  886. In our stead,

  887. He died.

  888. He was the only

  889. one that could

  890. accomplish this.

  891. That could bear

  892. the infinite

  893. wrath of God

  894. against our

  895. sins.

  896. That's one side

  897. of justification,

  898. right?

  899. The infinite debt

  900. of your sin

  901. has been dismissed

  902. if you've been

  903. declared justified.

  904. Now, that's not enough.

  905. You're just brought

  906. up to zero now.

  907. But we must also

  908. keep the law

  909. to be found

  910. right before God.

  911. We must be

  912. righteous before God.

  913. And so,

  914. the granting

  915. of righteousness

  916. is also part

  917. of justification.

  918. That Jesus came

  919. and lived

  920. a perfect life

  921. was necessary

  922. for us.

  923. He fulfilled

  924. the law

  925. that we might

  926. have His

  927. righteousness.

  928. And so,

  929. when we believe

  930. in Christ,

  931. both things

  932. are imputed

  933. to us.

  934. It's called

  935. double imputation.

  936. Our sin

  937. cast off

  938. onto Christ,

  939. His righteousness

  940. given to us.

  941. Wonderful verse

  942. that sums this up

  943. so well.

  944. 2 Corinthians 5,

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  945. verse 21.

  946. For our sake,

  947. God made Christ

  948. to be sin

  949. who knew no sin

  950. so that in Him

  951. we might become

  952. the righteousness

  953. of God.

  954. So,

  955. believers are granted,

  956. unbelievers are granted

  957. forgiveness.

  958. They become believers

  959. and they're given

  960. a place by righteousness

  961. in the kingdom.

  962. 5 and 6.

  963. So,

  964. Paul,

  965. right,

  966. Paul believed.

  967. Paul believed

  968. in the gospel

  969. of Jesus Christ.

  970. And we see him

  971. as one character

  972. in this story

  973. responding to the truth

  974. proclaimed.

  975. He tells us of it

  976. proclaimed to him

  977. by Christ Himself.

  978. Right?

  979. And he responds

  980. in belief.

  981. Right?

  982. His belief

  983. which is evidenced

  984. by his obedience.

  985. What does he do?

  986. He immediately

  987. goes and does

  988. the thing

  989. that Christ

  990. commanded him

  991. to do.

  992. And in the same way,

  993. beloved,

  994. in our day,

  995. we can't simply say,

  996. right,

  997. when I was a child,

  998. I prayed a prayer.

  999. I can't with confidence

  1000. when my young children

  1001. say to me,

  1002. I believe in Jesus,

  1003. go,

  1004. yay!

  1005. I go,

  1006. I really hope so.

  1007. Let's see.

  1008. Let's see.

  1009. Is there an evidencing

  1010. of your faith

  1011. in Jesus Christ?

  1012. Work out your salvation

  1013. with fear and trembling.

  1014. Make your calling

  1015. and election sure.

1016. And I don't want to make this

  1017. extra complicated for you.

1018. I'm not trying to make it

  1019. mystical for you.

1020. How do we ever know

  1021. if we're a Christian?

  1022. You obey.

  1023. You find in yourself

  1024. the desire

  1025. to pursue holiness.

1026. If you find that your life

  1027. is entirely bent

1028. against the commands of God,

  1029. then you're not a Christian.

1030. If you come to church

  1031. and you find yourself

  1032. offended because you

  1033. don't want to change,

  1034. you may not

  1035. be a Christian.

1036. If you find rather yourself

  1037. gladly submitting yourself

1038. to the Word of God,

  1039. going,

  1040. God has given me

  1041. good commands.

1042. I want to please Him.

  1043. And I don't do so perfectly,

  1044. but oh,

  1045. I want to.

  1046. Right?

  1047. My sin grieves me

  1048. and it grieves me

  1049. the more I mature

  1050. in Christ.

  1051. What a wicked,

  1052. horrible thing

  1053. that I've been set

  1054. free from sin

  1055. and yet I still,

  1056. like a dog,

  1057. return to my vomit.

  1058. You'll find that impulse

  1059. within yourself.

  1060. Make your calling

  1061. and election sure.

  1062. Measure it out

  1063. by your obedience.

  1064. Not that you're

  1065. perfectly obedient,

  1066. you hear me say,

  1067. but that you are

  1068. striving for obedience.

  1069. This is an evidence

1070. that the Spirit of God

  1071. lives within you

  1072. and He's working

  1073. to bring about

  1074. obedience in you.

  1075. We're caught up

  1076. in our American

  1077. Christian culture

  1078. of decisionism.

  1079. Right?

  1080. It's wicked.

  1081. It's deceptive.

  1082. And if it's deceptive,

1083. you know who it belongs to?

  1084. Amen.

  1085. We see another character

  1086. in our text today.

  1087. Festus.

1088. Who thought that the gospel

  1089. was absolute foolishness.

  1090. Right?

  1091. He doesn't even entertain

  1092. the idea.

  1093. He says to Paul

  1094. in verse 24,

  1095. Paul, you're out

  1096. of your mind.

  1097. Your great learning

  1098. is driving you

  1099. out of your mind.

  1100. He saw Him

  1101. as absolutely crazy.

  1102. And beloved,

  1103. we're going to deal

  1104. with people like that

  1105. in the world.

  1106. That's not changed.

  1107. There's no new thing

  1108. under the sun.

1109. People are going to think

1110. that the way of Jesus

  1111. is insanity.

  1112. Right?

  1113. These people

  1114. have turned the world

  1115. upside down

  1116. following Christ

  1117. is the world

  1118. right side up.

  1119. Take a confidence

  1120. in that.

  1121. What a great benefit

1122. it is that we can gather

  1123. as a church

1124. and we can all look

  1125. around at each other

1126. and say we're not crazy.

  1127. Right?

  1128. We're not alone

  1129. in this world.

  1130. Right?

  1131. These fantastic stories

  1132. that we believe

  1133. to be true,

  1134. we believe together

  1135. that they're true.

  1136. I'm so thankful

  1137. that Christ saved me

  1138. as an individual,

  1139. but He saved me

  1140. to a church,

1141. a people for His possession.

  1142. I am increasingly encouraged

  1143. that other people

  1144. are crazy like me.

  1145. Festus thinks

  1146. it's absolute foolishness.

  1147. And then Agrippa.

  1148. I think Agrippa

1149. is the most sad to me

  1150. because he had knowledge

  1151. but not belief.

1152. And I think that many people

1153. in our day fall into

  1154. this category of person,

  1155. the way they respond

  1156. to the gospel.

  1157. They have knowledge.

  1158. They're aware of it,

1159. but they don't believe in it.

1160. Or they say they believe in it,

  1161. but they don't believe.

  1162. It doesn't actually change

  1163. who they are.

  1164. Verse 26, Paul says,

  1165. For the King knows

  1166. about these things,

1167. and to Him I speak boldly.

  1168. For I am persuaded

1169. that none of these things

  1170. has escaped as noticed,

1171. for it has not been done

  1172. in a corner.

  1173. He's aware,

  1174. he's informed about

  1175. this way,

  1176. this way of following

  1177. Jesus Christ.

  1178. Jesus is the fulfillment

1179. of the Old Testament prophecies,

1180. which is why he asks him,

1181. Do you believe the prophets?

  1182. I know you believe.

  1183. I know you're standing.

  1184. You have to believe

  1185. the prophets.

1186. And Agrippa's response to him

1187. is in such a short time,

  1188. would you persuade me

  1189. to be a Christian?

  1190. It's particularly sad

  1191. when people have

  1192. access to

  1193. knowledge of the truth,

  1194. but don't place

  1195. believing faith

  1196. in it.

  1197. On your bulletin today,

  1198. there's a Spurgeon quote

1199. as I like to use.

  1200. He said,

  1201. Wisdom

  1202. is the right use

  1203. of knowledge.

  1204. To know

1205. is not to be wise.

  1206. Many men know

  1207. a great deal

  1208. and are all

  1209. the greater fools

  1210. for it.

  1211. There is no fool

  1212. so great a fool

  1213. as a knowing fool,

  1214. but to know

  1215. how to use knowledge

  1216. is to have wisdom.

  1217. So,

  1218. in conclusion this morning,

  1219. believe

  1220. the exhortation

  1221. this morning

  1222. to you.

1223. If you have not placed

  1224. saving faith

  1225. in Jesus Christ,

  1226. find in this moment

1227. the day of your salvation.

  1228. You don't need

1229. for me to lead you

  1230. in a prayer.

  1231. Cry out to God

  1232. that He would save

  1233. your soul.

  1234. Believe that He is

1235. the only Son of God,

  1236. made man in order

1237. to live a sinless life.

  1238. Sacrifice on a cross

  1239. for the forgiveness

  1240. of your sin.

  1241. Risen and ascended,

  1242. exalted

  1243. at the right hand

  1244. of the Father.

  1245. Open your eyes

1246. so that you may turn

  1247. from darkness to light

  1248. and from the power

  1249. of Satan to God

  1250. that you may receive

  1251. forgiveness of sins

1252. and a place among those

  1253. who are sanctified

  1254. by faith

  1255. in Jesus Christ.

  1256. If you have believed

  1257. in Christ

  1258. for the salvation

  1259. of your soul,

  1260. evidence that

  1261. belief

  1262. by obedience

  1263. heartily agree

  1264. with Paul's response

  1265. to Agrippa,

  1266. I would to God

  1267. that not only you

  1268. but also all

1269. who hear me this day

  1270. might become

  1271. such as I am.

  1272. Let's pray together.
