  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  2. Having finished our exposition of the book of Acts, Luke's second account is account of the work of the risen Christ.

  3. We're taking just a short little interlude to do some smaller expositions.

  4. And we've come to his first account of Jesus's earthly ministry.

  5. And a particular set of parables that he told in Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  6. Now, like we did last week, I'm going to read the entirety of the chapter to you.

  7. Because we want to set this parable that we most often know as the parable of the prodigal son in its proper context.

  8. There's a great truth being communicated here.

  9. And we don't want to miss that as we study it across these three weeks.

  10. Last week, today, and the next as well.

  11. Our focus for today, though, as we read the chapter and we'll come back to, is verses 20 through 24.

  12. So, Luke chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  13. Before I begin reading, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  14. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  15. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  16. Luke chapter 15, beginning in verse 1 and following.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  17. Now, the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to Him.

  18. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them.

  19. So He told them this parable.

  20. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

  21. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

  22. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.

  23. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

  24. Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?

  25. And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.

  26. Just so I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

  27. And he said, There was a man who had two sons.

  28. And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of my property that is coming to me.

  29. And he divided his property between them.

  30. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country.

  31. And there he squandered his property in reckless living.

  32. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.

  33. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

  34. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

  35. But when he came to himself, he said, How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread?

  36. But I perish here with hunger.

  37. I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

  38. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  39. Treat me as one of your hired servants.

  40. And he arose and came to his father.

  41. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

  42. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

  43. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  44. But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.

  45. For this, my son was dead and is alive again.

  46. He was lost and is found.

  47. And they began to celebrate.

  48. Now his older son was in the field.

  49. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

  50. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.

  51. And he said to him, Your brother has come and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.

  52. But he was angry and refused to go in.

  53. His father came out and entreated him.

  54. But he answered his father, Look, these many years I have served you and I never disobeyed your command.

  55. Yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends.

  56. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.

  57. And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

  58. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad.

  59. For this, your brother was dead and is alive.

  60. He was lost and is found.

  61. And so, as I said, our major attention is on this parable that's most often called the parable of the prodigal son.

  62. And there are many commentators who have a problem with that title.

  63. Say it should rather be called the parable of the two sons.

  64. Or the parable, as Tim Keller says, the parable of the prodigal father.

  65. Father.

  66. Because we can, if we only think of the younger son, we can miss the point altogether of this text.

  67. You see, Jesus is juxtaposing the attitudes of the Pharisees and the scribes with the rejoicing of heaven over lost souls being found.

  68. He is not in any way suggesting to the Pharisees and scribes that they themselves are righteous.

  69. They are as desperately lost as those Gentiles and tax collectors that are gathering around Jesus.

  70. But they don't have a perception of this.

  71. They are the older brother.

  72. And so, we're driving to that point, which we'll make readily and at length next week.

  73. Last week, we focused on verses 11 through 19, the younger son, the one that we call the prodigal.

  74. And we noted the various stages in the history of this type of sinner, this licentious sinner.

  75. They were, as follows, number one, a desire for independence from God.

  76. The truth of it is that we never really are independent from God, but we can seek to be independent from Him.

  77. We can believe that we are independent from Him.

  78. The second stage in the history of this sinner is the indulgence of self.

  79. Investing in us.

  80. The experience of the fleeting pleasure of sin to its end.

  81. The third, which some people reach, and I pray you never do, is insanity of the soul.

  82. This young man came to the place where he wanted to eat inedible food.

  83. Food that was given to pigs.

  84. He was brought that low in his sinfulness, in his rebellion against the Father.

  85. And then, as the prodigal seems to, and if you have come to place believing faith in Christ,

  86. we see on his part repentance and faith.

  87. We see him come to himself, believing that his Father will be good to him,

  88. and will take him back into his control and care.

  89. This morning, we're going to focus our attention on the love of the Father for the younger son.

  90. And today, if you're here with us, you find yourself in one of three places.

  91. Number one, it is possible this morning that you are presently the prodigal son.

  92. You've sought your independence from God.

  93. You indulge yourself.

  94. You may even be finding yourself this morning at the very end of yourself.

  95. Maybe that's why you chose to accept an invitation to come to church.

  96. You don't know where else to go.

  97. You've sought out the pleasure of the world, and it has left you wanting.

  98. My hope for you this morning, my prayer for you this week,

  99. is that you will see with what kind of love God loves.

  100. That you will see that God's love is offered freely and lavishly to anyone

  101. who will come to him in repentance and faith,

  102. and that your heart will be drawn to him.

  103. Secondly, you may find that you are the elder brother

  104. who we'll talk about more extensively next week.

  105. But that's to say that you are self-righteous.

  106. You think you've done enough good to seek God's pleasure.

  107. You desire to obey God,

  108. but that desire, that obedience has nothing to do with a love for him,

  109. but is rather motivated by what you can get from him.

  110. You think there's some promise on the other side

  111. if you will simply obey.

  112. You also, just like the younger son,

  113. wish that the father was dead,

  114. and your sin may be the worst of the two

  115. because it is so much more deceptive.

  116. You think you're accepted by God by your works,

  117. and your works will come up short.

  118. My hope for you this morning

  119. is that you will also see your need for repentance and faith,

  120. that you would love God in his ways to have him,

  121. and not merely what he can give you,

  122. that you also would fly home to your father,

  123. that you may rejoice in his goodness to mankind.

  124. The third position you may find yourself in this morning,

  125. I hope that most of you, if not all,

  126. find yourself in this place,

  127. having been a rebel of one kind or the other,

  128. having been the younger or been the elder son,

  129. you have humbly returned to God,

  130. and he has given you a place in his household.

  131. My hope for you this morning

  132. is that you will appreciate afresh

  133. God's loving kindness towards you.

  134. Beloved, it is very possible to be found in Christ,

  135. to be justified before God

  136. because of what Christ has done on our behalf,

  137. and to forget it,

  138. and to function as if.

  139. We need to earn our way to God,

  140. or to function as if we can live however we want,

  141. and be accepted by him.

  142. It's very possible to find ourself

  143. in the proper stance with the Lord,

  144. but not living in accordance with it.

  145. So I hope this morning you will appreciate once again

  146. how good the Father is to his people.

  147. As his sons and daughters,

  148. we would want to live in his house joyfully

  149. and obediently.

  150. That despite how difficult your week may have been,

  151. that you will revel today in the fact

  152. that you have been clothed in the righteousness of Christ,

  153. given the authority to be a herald of God,

  154. and you have been called a son.

  155. So we're going to consider the love of the Father

  156. toward the younger son.

  157. On the front of your bulletin

  158. is a quote by A.W. Tozer

  159. from a book he wrote called Knowledge of the Holy,

  160. which I commend to you.

  161. He was a 20th century American pastor,

  162. and he said this,

  163. speaking of God's attributes

  164. as they relate to his love.

  165. Because God is self-existent,

  166. his love had no beginning.

  167. Because he is eternal,

  168. his love can have no end.

  169. Because he is infinite,

  170. it has no limit.

  171. Because he is holy,

  172. it is the quintessence

  173. of all spotless purity.

  174. Because he is immense,

  175. his love is an incomprehensibly vast,

  176. bottomless, shoreless sea.

  177. So let's get to it.

  178. Let's consider the Father's love

  179. toward the younger son.

  180. The outline for this morning's text

  181. is as follows.

  182. Number one,

  183. the compassion of the Father.

  184. Number two,

  185. the son interrupted and restored.

  186. And number three,

  187. the celebration of the Father

  188. and his servants.

  189. Number one,

  190. the compassion of the Father.

  191. We see this throughout

  192. our text for today,

  193. but predominantly,

  194. mostly I want to look at it

  195. in verse 20 this morning.

  196. We see,

  197. coming off the rest of our text

  198. from verse 19,

  199. the prodigal son arose

  200. and came to his father.

  201. Now,

  202. it's really important

  203. that we understand

  204. what this young man

  205. would have been going back to

  206. in this particular culture.

  207. Remember that this story

  208. is being told

  209. predominantly to these scribes

  210. and Pharisees, right?

  211. Jesus is driving this point

  212. and he is using

  213. shock and awe

  214. to accomplish it, right?

  215. Already,

  216. these Pharisees

  217. and scribes

  218. would have just been

  219. astounded

  220. by the flagrant

  221. disobedience

  222. of this young man, right?

  223. This young man

  224. in asking for his inheritance

  225. from his father

  226. has said to his father,

  227. I wish you were dead, right?

  228. He's gone to him

  229. and said,

  230. just go ahead and die

  231. so that I can have

  232. what's coming to me, right?

  233. He has gone off

  234. to unclean people,

  235. to Gentile lands.

  236. He has spent this money

  237. in a licentious way.

  238. The older brother tells us

  239. he must have heard reports

  240. that he sent it on prostitutes.

  241. He finds himself now destitute,

  242. caring for unclean animals.

  243. These scribes and Pharisees

  244. are astounded

  245. at the rebellion

  246. of this young man.

  247. So remember in this culture,

  248. God's given instruction

  249. in Deuteronomy chapter 21

    Deuteronomy 21 chapter mention

  250. that if a son is rebellious,

  251. he will not listen.

  252. There's no bringing this son

  253. to correction.

  254. That the people of the town

  255. were supposed to take the son

  256. outside the gate

  257. and stone him to death.

  258. So this is the kind

  259. of serious culture

  260. that is looking at the story

  261. and thinking about obedience.

  262. Now, the instruction

  263. of Deuteronomy 21

  264. was very rarely,

  265. if ever, followed

  266. in this day,

  267. but there would have been

  268. a great deal of scorn

  269. for this young man

  270. as he comes back.

  271. The cultural expectation.

  272. These scribes and Pharisees

  273. are thinking to themselves,

  274. oh boy, here it comes.

  275. The son's about to get it

  276. from his father.

  277. The cultural expectation

  278. is that the father

  279. would have had nothing

  280. to do with him

  281. until the son had sat

  282. outside of his gate

  283. for an extended period of time.

  284. Weeks, even months.

  285. Sat outside the gate.

  286. And the job of the town folk

  287. would have been

  288. to ridicule him.

  289. Would have been

  290. to tell him

  291. what a horrible,

  292. disobedient son

  293. he was.

  294. To spit on him.

  295. To throw rotten food at him.

  296. And if the son would

  297. persevere outside the gate.

  298. If he would stay

  299. in that spot

  300. receiving all of this scorn.

  301. All of this ridicule

  302. that was due him

  303. for his disobedience.

  304. The father may

  305. take him back in.

  306. The father might

  307. deal with him

  308. as a hired servant.

  309. And this is the hope

  310. of the son, right?

  311. He's just saying,

  312. my father will at least

  313. let me live on the land

  314. and work for him.

  315. I'll at least

  316. have food

  317. for my belly.

  318. And this is what

  319. he goes back to.

  320. This is what he's

  321. headed back for.

  322. Remember

  323. that he had a plan, right?

  324. He had thought up

  325. this plan.

  326. He was going to

  327. say this thing.

  328. He had come to himself

  329. and I'm going to say,

  330. verse 18,

  331. Father, I have sinned

  332. against heaven

  333. and before you.

  334. I'm no longer worthy

  335. to be called your son.

  336. Treat me as one

  337. of your hired servants.

  338. And beyond Jesus

  339. telling the story,

  340. I just imagine him

  341. rehearsing that

  342. over and over again

  343. in his head, right?

  344. Waiting.

  345. I'm going to sit

  346. outside the gate.

  347. I'm going to sit

  348. outside the gate.

  349. I'm going to sit

  350. outside the gate.

  351. And when I get an

  352. audience before my father,

  353. I'm going to say

  354. this thing.

  355. And we see in our text

  356. today that he launches

  357. into it, right?

  358. He's got it ready

  359. to go.

  360. But look at what

  361. happens instead.

  362. And he arose

  363. and he came

  364. to his father.

  365. But while he was

  366. still a long

  367. way off.

  368. Now in this day,

  369. landowners

  370. would have had

  371. homes in the city.

  372. For me as a person

  373. who currently lives

  374. in the city of Gainesville

  375. and really loves

  376. being out,

  377. I think, why?

  378. I'd rather have a house

  379. out on the land

  380. someplace.

  381. But it wasn't safe

  382. to have a house

  383. out on the land.

  384. So they all had homes

  385. in the town.

  386. So the young man

  387. is approaching the town

  388. and while he's still

  389. a long way off,

  390. his father sees him

  391. expectantly watching

  392. for him.

  393. This isn't a walk

  394. by a window

  395. when he happens

  396. to see a dirty

  397. young man

  398. coming into town.

  399. He is outside.

  400. He is expectant.

  401. And he is watching

  402. for his son's return.

  403. And the text says

  404. he felt compassion.

  405. He felt compassion.

  406. The Greek word

  407. used in the original text

  408. is a lot stronger

  409. than the thought

  410. that comes to my mind

  411. when I read the word

  412. compassion.

  413. I think of kind of

  414. a momentary feeling

  415. of affection.

  416. But the Greek word

  417. speaks of a guttural,

  418. a visceral love

  419. for this young man.

  420. This is a father

  421. who would have done

  422. anything for his son.

  423. Fathers in the room,

  424. I know there's not

  425. a lot of us,

  426. but I think we can

  427. in some measure

  428. understand this,

  429. that we would do

  430. anything for our sons.

  431. When Cade,

  432. who is my oldest,

  433. who is now seven,

  434. was five,

  435. I took him

  436. and his younger brother,

  437. Judah,

  438. to a playground.

  439. And there was

  440. a family reunion

  441. that looked like

  442. happening nearby

  443. and this group

  444. of probably cousins,

  445. they just seemed

  446. like a family unit

  447. playing a game together.

  448. They were playing tag

  449. and Cade wanted

  450. to get in

  451. on this game.

  452. So he just invited

  453. himself into it

  454. and was just bouncing around

  455. and playing

  456. in this game with them.

  457. There was the oldest

  458. of this crew

  459. who was probably

  460. eight or nine

  461. who kept saying to him,

  462. no,

  463. you can't play with us.

  464. But Cade didn't hear that.

  465. He just kept playing anyway.

  466. Like, hey, guys, guys.

  467. And he's running around,

  468. running around.

  469. And finally,

  470. this older boy

  471. got his attention

  472. from on top

  473. of the play set

  474. and Cade's standing down

  475. and I'm sitting over

  476. on the little wall

  477. as parents do,

  478. observing.

  479. And the young boy

  480. got his attention

  481. and said,

  482. hey, kid,

  483. you can't play with us.

  484. And Cade looked over

  485. at me.

  486. I'm going to cry

  487. thinking about it.

  488. Cade looked over at me

  489. and his little arms

  490. fell like this

  491. and his big tears

  492. welled up in his eyes

  493. and I just went like this.

  494. And he came running

  495. across the playground

  496. and just fell into my arms.

  497. And I wanted,

  498. I wanted to go pinch

  499. that kid's head off.

  500. Right?

  501. Which would have been

  502. highly inappropriate

  503. for me to do.

  504. But gosh,

  505. you just want to do

  506. anything for your kids.

  507. And that's,

  508. that's small.

  509. Right?

  510. In comparison.

  511. Right?

  512. So,

  513. so small

  514. of an example.

  515. And then just

  516. for your sake,

  517. um,

  518. maybe for mine

  519. to tell you that

  520. not too many moments later

  521. the kid was running

  522. full on

  523. and was looking

  524. over his shoulder

  525. and just slammed

  526. into a pole.

  527. And,

  528. and to,

  529. to my,

  530. to my shame,

  531. I went,

  532. yes!

  533. So,

  534. right,

  535. um,

  536. Psalm 103,

  537. 13 says this,

  538. as a father

  539. shows compassion

  540. to his children,

  541. so the Lord

  542. shows compassion

  543. to those

  544. who fear him.

  545. Right?

  546. So the father has,

  547. he sees the son

  548. from a long way off

  549. and has this guttural

  550. love

  551. for him.

  552. And what does it do?

  553. Like,

  554. what does it compel him

  555. to do?

  556. He runs

  557. to his son.

  558. Now,

  559. I think,

  560. I think for us,

  561. 21st century readers

  562. of this,

  563. we just,

  564. we see a movie

  565. play out in our mind,

  566. the music queues up

  567. as he sprints

  568. to his son.

  569. To Jesus' listeners,

  570. they would have been

  571. horrified

  572. by such an action.

  573. Now,

  574. remember,

  575. this father

  576. should have scorned him

  577. to begin with.

  578. This father should have,

  579. should have had nothing

  580. to do with him.

  581. Right?

  582. Even seeing him

  583. a long way off,

  584. gone back inside

  585. the house.

  586. But instead,

  587. he runs.

  588. Okay?

  589. So not only does it

  590. go out to him,

  591. but he goes out to him

  592. with haste.

  593. And the thing for you

  594. to know is that

  595. men of wealth

  596. in this day

  597. did not run.

  598. They didn't run.

  599. They never ran.

  600. Boys and servants

  601. ran.

  602. Right?

  603. So if you needed something,

  604. you sent somebody

  605. to run for you.

  606. You didn't run.

  607. It was shameful

  608. to run

  609. for men

  610. in this day.

  611. Not only

  612. the very act

  613. of running,

  614. but he would have

  615. taken his long robe,

  616. his well-dressed robe,

  617. and he would have had

  618. to hike it up

  619. to his knees

  620. to run.

  621. Right?

  622. And he showed

  623. the bottom

  624. of his legs.

  625. This was a thing

  626. that slaves

  627. had exposed,

  628. not men

  629. of wealth

  630. and of honor.

  631. So he

  632. humbles himself

  633. out of this

  634. visceral love

  635. for his son.

  636. He humbles himself

  637. and he runs

  638. out

  639. to him.

  640. God

  641. humbled himself.

  642. He became

  643. a man

  644. and he suffered

  645. and he died

  646. in our stead.

  647. Hebrews 12,

  648. 2 states

  649. that Jesus

  650. endured

  651. the cross

  652. despising

  653. the shame.

  654. Paul writes

  655. in Philippians 2,

  656. 6-8

  657. of Jesus

  658. who though

  659. he was in the form

  660. of God

  661. did not count

  662. equality with God

  663. a thing to be grasped

  664. but emptied himself

  665. by taking the form

  666. of a servant

  667. being born

  668. in the likeness

  669. of men

  670. and being found

  671. in human form

  672. he humbled himself

  673. by becoming obedient

  674. to the point of death

  675. even death

  676. on a cross.

  677. So this young

  678. smelly

  679. rebellious

  680. kid

  681. is coming home

  682. and the father

  683. shames himself

  684. shames himself

  685. to go out

  686. and to meet him

  687. before he makes

  688. his way

  689. into the town.

  690. We'll see why

  691. in a moment.

  692. But he makes himself

  693. a fool.

  694. You have to imagine.

  695. It's daytime

  696. he sees him a long way off

  697. but people are out

  698. about in the town

  699. they're in the marketplace

  700. and they see him

  701. run out

  702. to his boy.

  703. From our daily

  704. Bible reading

  705. for this past week

  706. Mr. Doug read it to us

  707. this morning

  708. Genesis 22

  709. we read of Abraham's

  710. willingness

  711. to sacrifice Isaac

  712. and that sacrifice

  713. of Isaac

  714. being replaced

  715. with a ram

  716. who is a type

  717. for Christ.

  718. And what does he do

  719. when he gets to him?

  720. he doesn't run out

  721. to him

  722. in order to bring

  723. to him

  724. the condemnation

  725. that's due to him

  726. but he embraces him

  727. and he kisses him.

  728. He fell on his neck

  729. some translations

  730. will say

  731. he

  732. collapsed

  733. onto his son

  734. and wrapped his arms

  735. around him

  736. and the tense

  737. of kissed him

  738. means to

  739. kiss him

  740. repeatedly.

  741. this compassion

  742. is overflowing

  743. into a great

  744. joy

  745. to see

  746. his son

  747. return.

  748. John MacArthur

  749. said

  750. of this little

  751. moment

  752. in the story

  753. the prodigal

  754. came home

  755. prepared

  756. to kiss

  757. his father's

  758. feet

  759. instead

  760. the father

  761. was kissing

  762. the prodigal's

  763. pig stinking

  764. head.

  765. And the father's

  766. compassion

  767. does not

  768. stop there.

  769. Secondly

  770. let's look at

  771. the son

  772. interrupted

  773. and restored

  774. verses

  775. 21

  776. and 22.

  777. So what happens?

  778. The son

  779. launches into

  780. his speech

  781. just up in

  782. verse 18

  783. and 19

  784. but he doesn't

  785. get all the way

  786. through it

  787. and I love this

  788. in Jesus'

  789. telling here

  790. he says

  791. father I'm sitting

  792. against heaven

  793. and before you

  794. I am no longer

  795. worthy to be

  796. called your son

  797. and what is it

  798. that he was going

  799. to go on to say

  800. treat me as one

  801. of your hired

  802. servants

  803. but he gets

  804. interrupted

  805. I think that's

  806. the right way

  807. to read this

  808. right

  809. the conjunction

  810. verse 22

  811. but is in the

  812. original text

  813. but the father

  814. he's in the middle

  815. of the speech

  816. but rather than

  817. him getting to

  818. finish the speech

  819. he said

  820. I'm not worthy

  821. to be called

  822. your son

  823. what does the

  824. father do?

  825. He does all

  826. of these things

  827. to show

  828. the son

  829. that he

  830. is restored

  831. to him

  832. as a son

  833. he says

  834. to his servants

  835. bring quickly

  836. here's the running

  837. that's going on

  838. right

  839. I'm presuming

  840. they're still

  841. outside the town

  842. they've yet to

  843. walk through

  844. the crowd

  845. back to the house

  846. and he sends

  847. the servants

  848. running

  849. you gotta imagine

  850. they ran after him

  851. why is our master

  852. running

  853. let's run after him

  854. to see what's going on

  855. they send him

  856. he sends some

  857. of them back

  858. to bring what?

  859. the best robe

  860. a ring

  861. and shoes

  862. these are significant

  863. things

  864. that this loving

  865. father

  866. brought to put on

  867. his youngest

  868. son

  869. first the

  870. best robe

  871. is brought

  872. and it's

  873. put on him

  874. the best robe

  875. was an extremely

  876. significant

  877. article of clothing

  878. every wealthy man

  879. would own

  880. an ornate robe

  881. made of the finest

  882. fabrics

  883. that was reserved

  884. for the very

  885. most special

  886. of events

  887. this was a robe

  888. that the owner

  889. wouldn't wear

  890. to a wedding

  891. he was invited to

  892. this is how special

  893. it was

  894. but would rather

  895. only wear it

  896. to the weddings

  897. of their own

  898. children

  899. we don't have

  900. anything like this

  901. in our culture

  902. I don't even think

  903. most people own

  904. like a nice tux

  905. anymore

  906. right

  907. this would have been

  908. better than that

  909. this was in

  910. high reserve

  911. for very

  912. very special

  913. events

  914. this robe

  915. and it was

  916. his robe

  917. giving this robe

  918. to the son

  919. is not even

  920. a normal honor

  921. that a son

  922. would receive

  923. right

  924. this isn't

  925. extra special

  926. it's a very

  927. high honor

  928. and what he

  929. is doing

  930. is he is saying

  931. this

  932. boy

  933. that rebelled

  934. against me

  935. is restored

  936. to the honor

  937. of my

  938. house

  939. right

  940. this is my

  941. best

  942. robe

  943. and I am

  944. putting it

  945. on him

  946. he belongs

  947. to me

  948. so as he gets

  949. taken back

  950. through that town

  951. everyone can see

  952. the son

  953. has been

  954. restored

  955. psalm 5

  956. 4

  957. also from

  958. our reading

  959. this week

  960. says

  961. for you are not

  962. a god who

  963. delights in

  964. wickedness

  965. evil

  966. may not

  967. dwell

  968. with you

  969. so

  970. god our

  971. father

  972. cannot

  973. exist with

  974. us

  975. in wickedness

  976. god can

  977. associate

  978. with us

  979. in our

  980. unrighteousness

  981. right

  982. in our

  983. evil deeds

  984. in our

  985. rebellion

  986. so how is it

  987. that we come

  988. into right

  989. relationship

  990. with him

  991. it's that

  992. our sin

  993. is imputed

  994. to christ

  995. as christ

  996. died on the

  997. cross

  998. he took

  999. our sin

  1000. and we're

  1001. given

  1002. his righteousness

  1003. his perfect

  1004. life is

  1005. imputed

  1006. to us

  1007. it's called

  1008. the double

  1009. imputation

  1010. right

  1011. it's this

  1012. great trade

  1013. martin luther

  1014. called it

  1015. the great

  1016. exchange

  1017. right

  1018. our sin

  1019. given to

  1020. christ

  1021. his righteousness

  1022. given

  1023. to us

  1024. and we

  1025. often speak

  1026. in terms

  1027. of being

  1028. clothed

  1029. in the

  1030. righteousness

  1031. of christ

  1032. you see

  1033. the picture

  1034. here

  1035. god comes

  1036. to us

  1037. in repentance

  1038. of faith

  1039. he comes

  1040. to us

  1041. and he

  1042. wraps us

  1043. in christ

  1044. righteousness

  1045. he says

  1046. this is

  1047. my

  1048. son

  1049. and when

  1050. he sees

  1051. us

  1052. he sees

  1053. christ

  1054. and escorts

  1055. us back

  1056. to the

  1057. house

  1058. paul writes

  1059. in 2

  1060. corinthians

  1061. 5

  1062. 21

  1063. for our

  1064. sake

  1065. he made

  1066. him to

  1067. be

  1068. sin

  1069. who knew

  1070. no

  1071. sin

  1072. so that

  1073. in him

  1074. we might

  1075. become

  1076. the righteousness

  1077. of god

  1078. i think this

  1079. is the best

  1080. verse that

  1081. speaks of

  1082. double

  1083. imputation

  1084. christ

  1085. and

  1086. and

  1087. charles

  1088. hodge

  1089. who

  1090. was a

  1091. 19th

  1092. century

  1093. theologian

  1094. he was

  1095. the president

  1096. of

  1097. princeton

  1098. theological

  1099. seminary

  1100. back when

  1101. that meant

  1102. something

  1103. said this

  1104. of

  1105. 2 corinthians

  1106. 5

  1107. 21

  1108. there

  1109. is probably

  1110. no

  1111. passage

  1112. in the

  1113. scriptures

  1114. in which

  1115. the

  1116. doctrine

  1117. of

  1118. justification

  1119. is more

  1120. concisely

  1121. or clearly

  1122. stated

  1123. than this

  1124. our

  1125. sins

  1126. were

  1127. here's

  1128. that word

  1129. imputed

  1130. to christ

  1131. and his

  1132. righteousness

  1133. is imputed

  1134. to us

  1135. he bore

  1136. our sins

  1137. we are

  1138. clothed

  1139. in his

  1140. righteousness

  1141. christ

  1142. bearing our

  1143. sins

  1144. did not

  1145. make him

  1146. morally

  1147. a sinner

  1148. nor does

  1149. christ's

  1150. righteousness

  1151. become

  1152. subjectively

  1153. ours

  1154. it is not

  1155. the moral

  1156. quality

  1157. of our

  1158. souls

  1159. our

  1160. sins

  1161. were the

  1162. judicial

  1163. ground

  1164. of the

  1165. sufferings

  1166. of christ

  1167. so that

  1168. they were

  1169. a satisfaction

  1170. of justice

  1171. and his

  1172. righteousness

  1173. is the

  1174. judicial

  1175. ground

  1176. of our

  1177. acceptance

  1178. with god

  1179. right

  1180. so the

  1181. prodigal

  1182. was still

  1183. the prodigal

  1184. he was

  1185. still the

  1186. son

  1187. and he

  1188. had still

  1189. done the

  1190. things he

  1191. had done

  1192. but he's

  1193. now clothed

  1194. in the

  1195. father's

  1196. robe

  1197. right

  1198. he is now

  1199. no longer

  1200. to be

  1201. scorned

  1202. right

  1203. abused

  1204. spit upon

  1205. by the

  1206. town folks

  1207. right

  1208. because he

  1209. has been

  1210. restored

  1211. as a son

  1212. but not only

  1213. that

  1214. not only

  1215. is the

  1216. best

  1217. robe

  1218. brought

  1219. to him

  1220. and put

  1221. on him

  1222. but also

  1223. a ring

  1224. now this

  1225. ring

  1226. would have

  1227. been a

  1228. signet

  1229. ring

  1230. which would

  1231. have carried

  1232. the family

  1233. crest

  1234. or seal

  1235. so that it

  1236. could be

  1237. pressed

  1238. into wax

  1239. on formal

  1240. letters

  1241. or documents

  1242. as verification

  1243. of legal

  1244. authority

  1245. probably seen

  1246. a movie

  1247. in which this

  1248. happened

  1249. right

  1250. they often

  1251. wore that

  1252. as a

  1253. ring

  1254. right

  1255. so that

  1256. they can

  1257. make that

  1258. stamp

  1259. on letters

  1260. or documents

  1261. right

  1262. so in

  1263. placing a

  1264. ring on

  1265. the finger

  1266. of his

  1267. son

  1268. the father

  1269. is not

  1270. only showing

  1271. that the

  1272. son had

  1273. restored

  1274. honor

  1275. but also

  1276. restored

  1277. authority

  1278. he's saying

  1279. once again

  1280. this young

  1281. man

  1282. is my

  1283. son

  1284. and he

  1285. speaks

  1290. 5

  1291. 20

  1292. just a

  1293. verse

  1294. before

  1295. where we

  1296. just

  1297. were

  1298. paul

  1299. says

  1300. therefore

  1301. we are

  1302. ambassadors

  1303. for christ

  1304. god

  1305. making his

  1306. appeal

  1307. through us

  1308. we implore

  1309. you on

  1310. behalf of

  1311. christ

  1312. be

  1313. reconciled

  1314. to god

  1315. so just

  1316. as we've

  1317. been clothed

  1318. in christ's

  1319. righteousness

  1320. right god

  1321. says this

  1322. is my

  1323. son

  1324. ladies you

  1325. want to

  1326. be a

  1327. son

  1328. you want

  1329. the

  1330. inheritance

  1331. that is

  1332. due you

  1333. this is

  1334. the

  1335. language

  1336. of

  1337. the

  1338. time

  1339. i am

  1340. god's

  1341. son

  1342. and i

  1343. speak

  1344. on his

  1345. behalf

  1346. we are

  1347. ambassadors

  1348. for christ

  1349. inconsistency

  1350. with his

  1351. revealed

  1352. word

  1353. as a

  1354. side

  1355. note

  1356. but not

  1357. only

  1358. the best

  1359. robe

  1360. and a

  1361. ring

  1362. but also

  1363. shoes

  1364. hired

  1365. servants

  1366. and

  1367. household

  1368. slaves

  1369. customarily

  1370. went

  1371. barefoot

  1372. masters

  1373. and their

  1374. sons

  1375. wore

  1376. shoes

  1377. right

  1378. so it's

  1379. another

  1380. status

  1381. thing

  1382. so to

  1383. have

  1384. shoes

  1385. placed

  1386. on the

  1387. son's

  1388. feet

  1389. was yet

  1390. another

  1391. gesture

  1392. another

  1393. showing

  1394. that this

  1395. young man

  1396. has been

  1397. restored

  1398. i recall

  1399. last week

  1400. that we

  1401. defined

  1402. the word

  1403. prodigal

  1404. as

  1405. licentious

  1406. or lavish

  1407. or as

  1408. the

  1409. esv

  1410. translation

  1411. of the

  1412. text

  1413. which

  1414. i use

  1415. on sunday

  1416. mornings

  1417. puts it

  1418. in verse

  1419. 13

  1420. reckless

  1421. right

  1422. reckless

  1423. living

  1424. licentious

  1425. sinning

  1426. that's what

  1427. we mean

  1428. when we

  1429. talk of

  1430. the

  1431. young

  1432. son

  1433. the

  1434. prodigal

  1435. son

  1436. right

  1437. the

  1438. story's

  1439. most

  1440. often

  1441. deemed

  1442. that

  1443. this

  1444. prodigal

  1445. son

  1446. story

  1447. because

  1448. of this

  1449. excessive

  1450. rebellion

  1451. against

  1452. the

  1453. father

  1454. but

  1455. let's

  1456. not

  1457. miss

  1458. the

  1459. prodigal

  1460. nature

  1461. of the

  1462. father's

  1463. love

  1464. for his

  1465. son

  1466. his

  1467. love

  1468. is

  1469. absolutely

  1470. reckless

  1471. the

  1472. first part

  1473. of first

  1475. chapter

  1476. three

  1477. verse

  1478. one

  1479. john

  1480. writes

  1481. this

  1482. see

  1483. what

  1484. kind

  1485. of

  1486. love

  1487. the

  1488. father

  1489. has

  1490. given

  1491. to

  1492. us

  1493. and

  1494. some

  1495. translations

  1496. will

  1497. say

  1498. that

  1499. the

  1500. father

  1501. has

  1502. lavished

  1503. on

  1504. us

  1505. that

  1506. we

  1507. should

  1508. be

  1509. called

  1510. children

  1511. of

  1512. God

  1513. and

  1514. so

  1515. we

  1516. are

  1517. but

  1518. Jesus

  1519. tells

  1520. us

  1521. more

  1522. about

  1523. the

  1524. father's

  1525. compassion

  1526. his

  1527. great

  1528. lavish

  1529. love

  1530. for

  1531. his

  1532. son

  1533. thirdly

  1534. the

  1535. celebration

  1536. of the

  1537. father

  1541. last

  1542. two

  1543. verses

  1544. verse

  1545. 23

  1547. 24

  1548. he

  1549. says

  1550. and

  1551. bring

  1552. the

  1553. fattened

  1554. calf

  1555. and

  1556. kill

  1557. it

  1558. and

  1559. let

  1560. us

  1561. eat

  1562. and

  1563. celebrate

  1564. for

  1565. this

  1566. my

  1567. son

  1568. was

  1569. dead

  1570. and

  1571. is

  1572. alive

  1573. again

  1574. he

  1575. was

  1576. lost

  1577. and

  1578. is

  1580. and

  1581. they

  1582. began

  1583. to

  1584. celebrate

  1585. now

  1586. to

  1587. slaughter

  1588. the

  1589. fattened

  1590. calf

  1591. was a

  1592. big

  1593. deal

  1594. for

  1595. time

  1596. I'm

  1597. going to

  1598. save

  1599. you the

  1601. of

  1602. the

  1603. preparation

  1604. of

  1605. the

  1607. calf

  1608. but

  1609. this

  1610. calf

  1611. was

  1612. likely

  1613. being

  1614. prepared

  1615. as

  1616. would

  1617. have

  1618. been

  1619. the

  1620. custom

  1621. for

  1622. the

  1623. wedding

  1624. of

  1625. the

  1626. oldest

  1627. son

  1628. it's

  1629. likely

  1630. why

  1631. this

  1632. calf

  1633. is

  1634. in

  1635. reserve

  1636. being

  1637. prepared

  1638. but

  1904. stuck

  1905. around

  1906. with

  1907. the

  1908. father

  1909. for

  1910. the

  1912. that

  1913. he

  1914. should

  1915. have

  1916. it

  1919. been

  1920. for

  1921. the

  2088. I don't

2089. want you to get too

  2090. caught up in

  2091. the

  2092. potential symbolism

  2093. of the

  2094. chapter

  2095. that's not

  2096. the

  2097. driving

  2098. point

  2099. that

  2100. we're

  2101. looking

  2102. at

  2103. here

  2104. but

  2105. I

  2106. just

  2107. want

  2108. you

  2109. to

  2110. consider

  2111. the

  2112. rejoicing

  2113. in

  2114. heaven

  2115. over

  2116. the

  2117. accomplished

  2118. work

  2119. of

  2120. Jesus

  2121. Christ

  2122. beloved

  2123. you want

  2124. to have

  2125. joy

  2126. here

  2127. be

  2128. saved

  2129. by

  2130. God

  2131. because

  2132. of

  2133. this

  2134. lamb

  2135. that

  2136. we're

  2137. going

  2138. to

  2139. read

  2140. about

  2141. sacrificed

  2142. on

  2143. our

  2144. behalf

  2145. and

  2146. then

  2147. join

  2148. in

  2149. his

  2150. work

  2151. in

  2152. the

  2153. world

  2154. right

  2155. what

  2156. he

  2157. is

  2158. doing

  2159. to

  2160. continue

  2161. to

  2162. save

  2163. this

  2164. is

  2165. the

  2166. work

  2167. of

  2168. Christians

  2169. joining

  2170. in

  2171. the

  2172. joy

  2173. of

  2174. God

  2175. as

  2176. he

  2177. calls

  2178. together

  2179. his

  2180. church

  2181. for

  2182. the

  2183. praise

  2184. of

  2185. his

  2186. name

  2187. pick

  2188. that

  2189. up

  2190. in

  2191. revelation

  2192. five

  2193. yes

  2194. the

  2195. whole

  2196. chapter

  2197. it's

  2198. too

  2199. good

  2200. not

  2201. to

  2202. read

  2203. the

  2204. whole

  2205. thing

  2206. and

  2207. then

  2208. we'll

  2209. close

  2210. so

  2211. in

  2212. verse

  2213. one

  2214. and

  2215. following

  2216. then

  2217. I

  2218. saw

  2219. on

  2220. the

  2221. right

  2222. hand

  2223. of

  2224. him

  2225. who

  2226. was

  2227. seated

  2228. on

  2229. the

  2230. throne

  2231. a

  2232. skull

  2233. written

  2234. within

  2235. and

  2236. on

  2237. the

  2238. back

  2239. sealed

  2240. with

  2241. seven

  2242. seals

  2243. and

  2244. I

  2245. saw

  2246. a

  2247. mighty

  2248. angel

  2249. proclaiming

  2250. with a

  2251. loud

  2252. voice

  2253. who

  2254. is

  2255. worthy

  2256. to

  2257. open

  2258. the

  2259. scroll

  2260. and

  2261. break

  2262. its

  2263. seals

  2264. and

  2265. no

  2266. one

  2267. in

  2268. heaven

  2269. on

  2270. earth

  2271. or

  2272. under

  2273. the

  2274. earth

  2275. was

  2276. able

  2277. to

  2278. open

  2279. the

  2280. scroll

  2281. or

  2282. to

  2283. look

  2284. into

  2285. it

  2286. and

  2287. I

  2288. began

  2289. to

  2290. weep

  2291. loudly

  2292. because

  2293. no

  2294. one

  2295. was

  2296. found

  2297. worthy

  2298. to

  2299. open

  2300. the

  2301. scroll

  2302. or

  2303. to

  2304. look

  2305. into

  2306. it

  2307. and

  2308. one

  2309. conquered

  2310. so

  2311. that

  2312. he

  2313. can

  2314. open

  2315. the

  2316. scroll

  2317. and

  2318. its

  2319. seven

  2320. seals

  2321. and

  2322. between

  2323. the

  2324. throne

  2325. and

  2326. the

  2327. four

  2328. living

  2329. creatures

  2330. and

  2331. among

  2332. the

  2333. elders

  2334. I

  2335. saw

  2336. a

  2337. lamb

  2338. standing

  2339. as

  2340. though

  2341. it

  2342. had

  2343. been

  2344. slain

  2345. with

  2346. seven

  2347. horns

  2348. and

  2349. with

  2350. seven

  2351. eyes

  2352. which

  2353. are

  2354. the

  2355. seven

  2356. spirits

  2357. of

  2358. God

  2359. sent

  2360. out

  2361. into

  2362. all

  2363. the

  2364. earth

  2365. and

  2366. he

  2367. went

  2368. and

  2369. he

  2370. took

  2371. the

  2372. scroll

  2373. from

  2374. the

  2375. right

  2376. hand

  2377. of

  2378. him

  2379. who

  2380. was

  2381. seated

  2382. on

  2383. the

  2384. throne

  2385. and

  2386. when

  2387. he

  2388. had

  2389. taken

  2390. the

  2391. scroll

  2392. the

  2393. four

  2394. living

  2395. creatures

  2396. and

  2397. the

  2398. twenty-four

  2399. elders

  2400. fell

  2401. down

  2402. before

  2403. the

  2404. lamb

  2405. each

  2406. holding

  2407. a

  2408. harp

  2409. and

  2410. golden

  2411. bowls

  2412. full

  2413. of

  2414. incense

  2415. which

  2416. are

  2417. the

  2418. prayers

  2419. of

  2420. the

  2421. saints

  2422. and

  2423. they

  2424. sang

  2425. a

  2426. new

  2427. song

  2428. saying

  2429. worthy

  2430. are

  2431. you

  2432. to

  2433. take

  2434. the

  2435. scroll

  2436. and

  2437. open

  2438. its

  2439. seals

  2440. for

  2441. you

  2442. were

  2443. slain

  2444. and

  2445. by

  2446. your

  2447. blood

  2448. you

  2449. ransomed

  2450. people

  2451. for

  2452. God

  2453. from

  2454. every

  2455. tribe

  2456. and

  2457. language

  2458. and

  2459. people

  2460. and

  2461. nation

  2462. and

  2463. you

  2464. had

  2465. made

  2466. them

  2467. a

  2468. kingdom

  2469. and

  2470. priests

  2471. to

  2472. our

  2473. God

  2474. and

  2475. they

  2476. shall

  2477. reign

  2478. on

  2479. the

  2480. earth

  2481. then

  2482. I

  2483. looked

  2484. and

  2485. I

  2486. heard

  2487. around

  2488. the

  2489. throne

  2490. and

  2491. the

  2492. living

  2493. creatures

  2494. and

  2495. the

  2496. elders

  2497. the

  2498. voice

  2499. of

  2500. many

  2501. angels

  2502. numbering

  2503. myriads

  2504. of

  2505. myriads

  2506. and

  2507. thousands

  2508. of

  2509. thousands

  2510. saying

  2511. with a

  2512. loud

  2513. voice

  2514. worthy

  2515. is

  2516. the

  2517. lamb

  2518. who

  2519. was

  2520. slain

  2521. to

  2522. receive

  2523. power

  2524. and

  2525. wealth

  2526. and

  2527. wisdom

  2528. and

  2529. might

  2530. and

  2531. honor

  2532. and

  2533. glory

  2534. and

  2535. blessing

  2536. and

  2537. I

  2538. heard

  2539. every

  2540. creature

  2541. in

  2542. heaven

  2543. and

  2544. on

  2545. earth

  2546. and

  2547. under

  2548. the

  2549. earth

  2550. and

  2551. in

  2552. the

  2553. sea

  2554. and

  2555. all

  2556. that

  2557. is

  2558. in

  2559. them

  2560. saying

  2561. to

  2562. him

  2563. who

  2564. sits

  2565. on

  2566. the

  2567. throne

  2568. the

  2569. lamb

  2570. be

  2571. blessing

  2572. and

  2573. honor

  2574. and

  2575. glory

  2576. and

  2577. might

  2578. forever

  2579. and

  2580. ever

  2581. and

  2582. the

  2583. four

  2584. living

  2585. creatures

  2586. said

  2587. amen

  2588. and

  2589. the

  2590. elders

  2591. fell

  2592. down

  2593. and

  2594. worshiped

  2595. let's

  2596. pray

  2597. !
