  1. God's Word, which I pray is well read and treasured in your hearts, and turn to Luke's first account, chapter 15.

  2. ! This is the Gospel of Luke, chapter 15.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  3. In case you've not been with us for the past two weeks, we've been considering together what is most often referred to as the parable of the prodigal son.

  4. However, many people will miss the driving point of the story if we think that it is all about the younger of these two brothers.

  5. In Luke, chapter 15, Jesus masterfully tells a story in order to expose the sinfulness of those who would grumble that this man receives sinners and eats with them.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  6. So, the story is driving to a point which is made in the response of the older brother.

  7. All the same, that does not mean that we shouldn't appreciate the other characters of the story and what we can learn of the folly of reckless living or of the licentious love of God.

  8. Two weeks ago, we considered the younger son and his desire to be independent from his father and to have the possessions that his father would give to him so that he could spend it on himself.

  9. We observed the younger son being brought to such a desperate state that he comes to his senses and decides to return to his father to live as a servant.

  10. Last week, we considered the great compassion of the father as he shames himself in order to receive his son back and restore him fully to his status as a son with all of the honor and authority that accompanies it.

  11. And then we saw the celebration of his restoration that follows.

  12. Now, as Jesus is about to drive home his point, recall for us that this story is very endearing.

  13. We can play the images out in our minds.

  14. We love to consider a wayward son returning home and being embraced by his father.

  15. But the Pharisees and the scribes would have been astonished that the father would have treated such a disrespectful son in this manner.

  16. The younger son, in asking for his inheritance, was wishing the father dead.

  17. And the Pharisees and the scribes could not fathom a father that would love his son in this way.

  18. At this point, they would have been furious.

  19. You see, the Pharisees and the scribes are represented by the older brother in the story.

  20. They see Jesus with tax collectors and sinners drawing near to him.

  21. And they say, as self-righteous religious elites, that they want to preserve their status as such.

  22. They would never want the reputations of those drawing near to Jesus to solely their reputations.

  23. And they, as we will see, want nothing to do with a God that would love the younger brothers of this world.

  24. So let's read Luke chapter 15 in its entirety.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  25. Our focus for this morning is going to be on verses 25 through 32.

  26. Before I read, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us.

  27. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  28. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  29. So beginning in verse 1.

  30. Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to him.

  31. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying,

  32. This man receives sinners and eats with them.

  33. So he told them this parable.

  34. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them,

  35. does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

  36. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

  37. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them,

  38. Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.

  39. Just so I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents

  40. than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

  41. Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin,

  42. does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?

  43. And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying,

  44. Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.

  45. Just so I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

  46. And he said, There was a man who had two sons.

  47. And the younger of them said to his father,

  48. Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.

  49. And he divided his property between them.

  50. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country.

  51. And there he squandered his property in reckless living.

  52. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need.

  53. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

  54. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

  55. But when he came to himself, he said,

  56. How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger.

  57. I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him,

  58. Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

  59. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  60. Treat me as one of your hired servants.

  61. And he arose and came to his father.

  62. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion and ran and embraced him and kissed him.

  63. And the son said to him,

  64. Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

  65. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  66. But the father said to his servants,

  67. Bring quickly the best robe and put it on him.

  68. And put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet.

  69. And bring the fattened calf and kill it and let us eat and celebrate.

  70. For this my son was dead and is alive again.

  71. He was lost and is found.

  72. And they began to celebrate.

  73. Now his older son was in the field.

  74. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

  75. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.

  76. And he said to him,

  77. Your brother has come and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.

  78. But he was angry and refused to go in.

  79. His father came out and entreated him.

  80. But he answered his father,

  81. Look, these many years I have served you.

  82. And I never disobeyed your command.

  83. Yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends.

  84. But when this son of yours came,

  85. who has devoured your property with prostitutes,

  86. you killed the fattened calf for him.

  87. And he said to him,

  88. Son, you are always with me and all that is mine is yours.

  89. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad.

  90. For this your brother was dead and is alive.

  91. He was lost and is found.

  92. Now the outline for our study this morning will juxtapose the failing love of the oldest son

  93. with the unfailing love of the father in the following outline.

  94. Number one, the failing love of the oldest son for his father.

  95. Number two, the failing love of the oldest son for his younger brother.

  96. And number three, the unfailing love of the father for his oldest son.

  97. Number one, the failing love of the oldest son for his father.

  98. I hope you're not getting those mixed up.

  99. The failing love of the oldest son for his father.

  100. And we see this mostly in verses 28 and 29.

  101. You see that he was angry at this report that his younger brother had returned

  102. and there was great rejoicing and the fattened calf had been killed

  103. and he refused to go inside to the party.

  104. The oldest son was so furious.

  105. And he is furious with the father.

  106. He stands outside of the celebration fuming.

  107. Why?

  108. Because his perceived rights have been trampled upon.

  109. Because he didn't run about seeking his pleasure like his younger brother,

  110. but stayed and shouldered more than his fair share of the work on his father's estate.

  111. He's mad.

  112. He wants justice, not mercy.

  113. He wants his younger brother to get what is coming to him.

  114. He wants him punished, not celebrated.

  115. And so he begins grumbling, just as the Pharisees and scribes.

  116. He says, look, these many years I have served you and I never disobeyed your command.

  117. Now, is it true that the oldest son was never disobedient?

  118. Of course not.

  119. This is a parable, to be clear.

  120. But there's no one who ever is perfectly obedient.

  121. This is an impossibility, right?

  122. But his perception is that he has been perfectly obedient.

  123. He thinks so.

  124. He is self-righteous.

  125. He believes that he has been perfectly good, or at least good enough to earn his father's favor.

  126. And this was the state of the Pharisees and the scribes.

  127. In Luke chapter 5, verses 30 through 32, Luke records this.

    Luke 5:30–32

  128. It should sound familiar.

  129. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying,

  130. Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?

  131. And Jesus answered them,

  132. Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  133. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  134. Is Jesus suggesting in Luke chapter 15 and in Luke chapter 5,

Luke 15 chapter mention Luke 5 chapter mention

  135. that the Pharisees and scribes are well?

  136. Absolutely not.

  137. He is addressing their perception of themselves.

  138. He is saying,

  139. You do not see that you are sick,

  140. so therefore you do not see your need of a physician.

  141. Elsewhere, Matthew chapter 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  142. This is verses 27 and 28.

  143. Jesus says,

  144. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  145. For you are like whitewashed tombs,

  146. which outwardly appear beautiful,

  147. but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanliness.

  148. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others,

  149. but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  150. You put on a very good show.

  151. The Pharisees and scribes should have seen themselves in the older brother

  152. and had been broken by their self-righteous indignation toward the younger sons who were gathering around Jesus.

  153. They needed to lay aside their self-righteousness and see that they also hate the Father.

  154. They should have humbled themselves and turned to the one who was telling them this story.

  155. Jesus says in Matthew chapter 5 verse 3,

    Matthew 5:3

  156. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  157. for theirs is the kingdom of God.

  158. Blessed are those who recognize they have nothing by which to buy their place in the kingdom of God,

  159. that they cannot earn their salvation.

  160. Mankind's issue before God has never been one of outward activity,

  161. but rather one of inward affection.

  162. God wants our affections to be set on Him,

  163. which to be clear yields obedience,

  164. but that obedience is ultimately for God.

  165. It is aimed at Him to please Him and to glorify Him because we love Him.

  166. The oldest son is not obedient in order to please his father,

  167. but he's rather obedient to get what he can from Him.

  168. Look what he goes on to say, right?

  169. He says essentially,

  170. I have been so perfectly obedient,

  171. and then,

  172. yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends.

  173. He is angry at the father's celebration over the return of his younger brother,

  174. not because,

  175. so much because of the younger brother being celebrated,

  176. but because he has not been celebrated.

  177. Because he's not been given something material,

  178. and look who he wants to celebrate with.

  179. A young goat so that he might celebrate with his friends.

  180. He wants nothing to do with the father,

  181. just like the younger son wanted nothing to do with the father.

  182. They both want, in the case of the younger brother at this point in our story,

  183. wanted,

  184. they both want or wanted the father dead.

  185. The older brother failed to love the father.

  186. Earlier in Luke 15,

  187. the younger brother says to the father,

  188. Father, give me the share of the property that is coming to me.

  189. What he's saying is,

  190. would you just go ahead and die?

  191. I want what is mine.

  192. And then very curiously,

  193. verse 12, the last part of it,

  194. Luke records for us that Jesus says,

  195. and the father,

  196. he divided his property between them.

  197. So he grants the wish.

  198. But does he grant it just to the younger son?

  199. He grants it to both of them.

  200. Both to the younger and to the older.

  201. And Jesus at this point,

  202. again, this is a parable.

  203. He's telling the story.

  204. We don't have the full detail of a real event here.

  205. He's just telling a story.

  206. But because he's driving at the heart of the scribes and the Pharisees,

  207. note that he doesn't say here,

  208. and the older brother wished the father not dead.

  209. It seems that he takes his inheritance.

  210. That he himself receives the property that is coming to him.

  211. In verse 31, in our text today,

  212. the father even says,

  213. Son, you are always with me,

  214. and all that is mine is yours.

  215. It has already been granted to you.

  216. So this morning,

  217. you may have never placed believing faith in Jesus Christ.

  218. You may identify with the older brother.

  219. You may look really good on the outside.

  220. But your obedience,

  221. your imperfect obedience, I must add,

  222. is not aimed at the pleasure and glory of God,

  223. but at yourself.

  224. You think that if you live just so,

  225. you will earn God's favor.

  226. And this type of thinking is damning.

  227. Do not be like the younger brother,

  228. turn to God in Christ.

  229. Do not be like the older brother,

  230. turn to God in Christ.

  231. Recognize that no amount of your working

  232. will ever earn you a place in his kingdom.

  233. James wrote in James 2, verse 10,

    James 2:10

  234. For whoever keeps the whole law,

  235. but fails in one point,

  236. has become guilty of all of it.

  237. Apart from the righteousness

  238. that is given to us by Christ,

  239. that is found in Him,

  240. His perfect life,

  241. all of us are utterly doomed.

  242. We cannot fill the void

  243. that our sin created.

  244. It is impossible.

  245. And that's what this older brother

  246. thinks that he's accomplishing.

  247. The offer of the gospel

  248. is that by faith in the perfect life,

  249. the perfect death,

  250. and the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  251. you can have your record of guilt expunged,

  252. and you can have the righteousness of Jesus.

  253. You can be saved from God's wrath,

  254. by God's mercy,

  255. to God's presence.

  256. What a glorious truth.

  257. Now, some of you,

  258. I think most of you,

  259. have placed believing faith in Jesus Christ.

  260. That's the status you hold this morning, right?

  261. Beloved of God,

  262. you are in Christ.

  263. But we are so quick

  264. to forget the great love of the Father for us,

  265. and so quick to either presume upon His grace

  266. with licentious living,

  267. or believe we can earn His grace

  268. with legalism.

  269. Those who are in Christ

  270. err in both ways all the time.

  271. By thinking we can live however we want

  272. because we're in Christ,

  273. or thinking still

  274. that somehow we're not pleasing to God

  275. because we're just not good enough.

  276. And both are errors.

  277. Beloved, you are saved by grace alone

  278. through faith alone.

  279. Your faith will produce obedience in you.

  280. It will produce obedience in you.

  281. But let it be from a grateful heart

  282. that loves to please and glorify God the Father.

  283. It's a response to the work He's accomplished

  284. on your behalf.

  285. On the front of your bulletin

  286. is your,

  287. it seems like almost weekly Spurgeon quote.

  288. Although,

  289. this is a Spurgeon quote

  290. where Spurgeon

  291. is quoting Martin Luther.

  292. So,

  293. extra quote this morning.

  294. Listen to this.

  295. He says,

  296. The whole Bible tells us

  297. from beginning to end

  298. that salvation is not by the works of the law

  299. but by the deeds of grace.

  300. Martin Luther declared

  301. that he constantly preached

  302. justification by faith alone

  303. because,

  304. said he,

  305. the people would forget it

  306. so that I was obliged

  307. almost to knock my Bible

  308. against their heads,

  309. to send it into their hearts.

  310. So it is true,

  311. we constantly forget

  312. that salvation

  313. is by grace alone.

  314. So even those of us

  315. who aren't

  316. off trying to earn salvation

  317. in an absolute sense

  318. or off living licentiously,

  319. rejecting God at every turn,

  320. those of us who are,

  321. in fact,

  322. restored to God

  323. in Christ

  324. can still err

  325. in one of these two ways.

  326. Let it not be so

  327. amongst us.

  328. So that's the failing love

  329. of the oldest son

  330. for his father.

  331. Secondly,

  332. the failing love

  333. of the oldest son

  334. for his younger brother.

  335. In verse 30,

  336. the oldest brother says

  337. of his younger brother,

  338. but when this son of yours

  339. came,

  340. he does not say

  341. when my younger brother came,

  342. he says,

  343. when this son of yours

  344. came,

  345. he just altogether

  346. disowns his brother.

  347. Parents,

  348. do you ever do that

  349. to your spouse?

  350. I do sometimes.

  351. So you'll never believe

  352. what your son just said.

  353. That's in effect

  354. what he is doing,

  355. although I do it

  356. with laughter.

  357. He's doing it

  358. with anger, right?

  359. He is not concerned

  360. at all

  361. about his younger brother.

  362. But this type of disowning

  363. had happened long before

  364. in Jesus' story.

  365. The oldest brother

  366. made no attempt

  367. to reason

  368. with his younger brother.

  369. He did not try

  370. to stop him

  371. from sitting against

  372. the father

  373. so egregiously.

  374. And he did not

  375. seek his return

  376. and restoration.

  377. Right?

  378. That would have been

  379. the appropriate thing

  380. to happen

  381. in this day.

  382. Right?

  383. The father to stay

  384. at home,

  385. master of his domain.

  386. It's the oldest brother

  387. that should have gone out

  388. and sought the younger brother

  389. and brought the younger brother home.

  390. In fact,

  391. we can see from the text

  392. that the oldest brother

  393. knew where his younger brother was.

  394. This distant land,

  395. he was aware of it

  396. and he knew

  397. what he was up to.

  398. But it did not go to him.

  399. He says to the father,

  400. this young son of yours

  401. who has devoured

  402. your property

  403. with prostitutes.

  404. He knows

  405. what he has been up to.

  406. He could have gone

  407. and sought him out.

  408. The oldest brother failed

  409. to love

  410. the younger brother.

  411. At this point,

  412. if you're in Christ,

  413. I want you

  414. to long

  415. for the younger brother

  416. to have a better

  417. oldest brother.

  418. A brother that would

  419. humble himself

  420. by going on a long journey

  421. for his younger brother's

  422. return

  423. and restoration.

  424. A brother who would

  425. gladly share his inheritance

  426. with his younger brother.

  427. A brother who leads

  428. his younger brother

  429. in grateful obedience.

  430. A brother who would

  431. rejoice to see

  432. his father rejoice

  433. in his return.

  434. Praise God

  435. that if you are in Christ,

  436. we have a perfect

  437. older brother,

  438. Christ himself.

  439. But that is not this brother.

  440. That is not who

  441. this brother is.

  442. He goes on to say,

  443. you killed

  444. the fattened calf

  445. for him.

  446. And it needs to

  447. resonate around

  448. in your head

  449. the accusation

  450. that the scribes

  451. and the Pharisees

  452. railed against Jesus.

  453. Right?

  454. The oldest brother

  455. is saying to the father,

  456. you have received

  457. a sinner

  458. and are eating

  459. with him.

  460. If the oldest brother

  461. loved the father,

  462. he would have also

  463. loved what the father

  464. loves.

  465. the younger brother.

  466. He would have also

  467. loved the younger

  468. brother.

  469. You may find yourself

  470. this morning

  471. in Christ,

  472. but loving

  473. what the world

  474. loves.

  475. You just want to

  476. celebrate with some

  477. of your friends.

  478. But what does

  479. the father love?

  480. The father loves

  481. the restoration

  482. of his sons.

  483. The parable

  484. of the lost sheep

  485. and the parable

  486. of the lost coin

  487. are about the rejoicing

  488. in heaven over sinners

  489. who repent.

  490. Jesus says in Luke 19.10,

  491. For the Son of Man

  492. came to seek

  493. and to save

  494. the lost.

  495. This is why

  496. Jesus came

  497. to earth.

  498. Jesus,

  499. the perfect

  500. oldest brother,

  501. came to find

  502. the lost

  503. and he has given

  504. us the same

  505. charge.

  506. Paul writes

  507. to the Corinthian church

  508. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:18

  509. chapter 5,

  510. verse 18

  511. and following,

  512. All this is from God,

  513. and he's talking

  514. about the new

  515. creations that we are

  516. in the preceding

  517. verses.

  518. All this is from God

  519. who through Christ

  520. reconciled us

  521. to himself

  522. and gave us

  523. the ministry

  524. of reconciliation.

  525. So,

  526. sons restored,

  527. now given

  528. the ministry

  529. of reconciliation.

  530. That is,

  531. this is verse 19,

  532. in Christ,

  533. God was reconciling

  534. the world to himself,

  535. not counting their

  536. trespasses against them,

  537. and entrusting to us

  538. the message

  539. of reconciliation.

  540. Therefore,

  541. we are ambassadors

  542. for Christ,

  543. God making his appeal

  544. through us.

  545. We implore you

  546. on behalf of Christ,

  547. be reconciled

  548. to God.

  549. And so you see,

  550. as Christ is the

  551. perfect oldest

  552. brother,

  553. right,

  554. as he has come

  555. and sought

  556. and saved,

  557. we have been given

  558. the same charge

  559. to go and to seek

  560. and to save,

  561. and we ought not,

  562. as God's sons,

  563. disregard anybody

  564. for that mission.

  565. We're to go,

  566. and we're to go far

  567. to the very ends

  568. of the earth.

  569. It means your neighbor,

  570. and it means the person

  571. that doesn't speak

  572. the language

  573. that anybody knows

  574. yet,

  575. all the way

  576. to the ends

  577. of the earth

  578. to bring

  579. God's sons

  580. home.

  581. And so that's the

  582. failing love,

  583. boy, I screwed it up there,

  584. the failing love

  585. of the son

  586. for his

  587. younger brother.

  588. May it not be so

  589. amongst us.

  590. And then thirdly,

  591. let's look at the

  592. unfailing love

  593. of the father

  594. for his

  595. oldest

  596. son.

  597. The father

  598. extends the

  599. same love

  600. he has for the

  601. younger brother

  602. to the oldest

  603. brother.

  604. The father's

  605. love is

  606. unfailing.

  607. When

  608. the oldest

  609. son was angry

  610. and refused

  611. to go in,

  612. what does the

  613. father do?

  614. He comes out

  615. and he

  616. entreats him,

  617. which means

  618. he urged

  619. or implored

  620. or encouraged

  621. him to come

  622. in and join

  623. the celebration.

  624. The father

  625. could have

  626. justly been

  627. angry with

  628. the oldest

  629. son for

  630. being outside

  631. fuming,

  632. not joining

  633. the celebration.

  634. He could have

  635. sent a message

  636. to him

  637. via a servant,

  638. get in here

  639. or else.

  640. But instead,

  641. he comes

  642. to him

  643. and he

  644. entreats

  645. him,

  646. don't be

  647. this way.

  648. You are

  649. my son.

  650. Love

  651. what I

  652. love.

  653. Love

  654. what I

  655. love because

  656. I love

  657. you.

  658. And I

  659. hope to

  660. help you

  661. see the

  662. connection.

  663. He

  664. entreats

  665. him,

  666. join in

  667. the rejoicing

  668. of heaven

  669. for,

  670. verse 32,

  671. it was

  672. fitting to

  673. celebrate

  674. and be

  675. glad for

  676. this your

  677. brother was

  678. dead and

  679. is alive.

  680. He was

  681. lost and

  682. is found.

  683. Jesus

  684. is making

  685. a plea

  686. to the

  687. Pharisees

  688. and the

  689. scribes

  690. to come

  691. to him

  692. by faith.

  693. exactly

  694. what's

  695. going

  696. on in

  697. this

  698. story.

  699. So,

  700. you see,

  701. God's

  702. sons love

  703. what he

  704. loves and

  705. he loves

  706. to see

  707. sinners

  708. come to

  709. repentance.

  710. He loves

  711. to restore

  712. those who

  713. are poor

  714. in spirit,

  715. to lavishly

  716. love those

  717. who return

  718. to him

  719. in humility.

  720. The Pharisees

  721. and the

  722. scribes

  723. were showing

  724. themselves

  725. to not

  726. be God's

  727. sons

  728. as they

  729. grumbled,

  730. saying,

  731. this man

  732. receives

  733. sinners

  734. and eats

  735. with them.

  736. And so,

  737. Jesus tells

  738. them three

  739. parables

  740. as a

  741. mercy

  742. to them.

  743. Did they

  744. heed that

  745. warning?

  746. Sadly,

  747. no.

  748. At least

  749. not most

  750. of those

  751. self-righteous

  752. religious

  753. elite of

  754. the day

  755. turned to

  756. God by

  757. faith

  758. in Christ.

  759. The story

  760. ends there

  761. and it

  762. ends rather

  763. abruptly

  764. and that's

  765. because Jesus

  766. has made

  767. his point.

  768. He has

  769. said the

  770. very thing

  771. that he

  772. was driving

  773. to say

  774. in these

  775. three

  776. parables.

  777. But there

  778. is a

  779. real life

  780. epilogue

  781. to the

  782. parable.

  783. The oldest

  784. son,

  785. in his

  786. rage

  787. against the

  788. father,

  789. beats him

  790. to death.

  791. In John

    John 11 chapter mention

  792. chapter 11,

  793. beginning in

  794. verse 45,

  795. this is

  796. after Jesus

  797. raises

  798. Lazarus

  799. from the

  800. dead.

  801. And if my

  802. understanding

  803. is correct,

  804. it would

  805. have been

  806. about the

  807. same time.

  808. The

  809. parable

  810. of the

  811. two sons

  812. is only

  813. recorded in

  814. Luke's

  815. account.

  816. This

  817. particular

  818. record is

  819. only in

  820. John's

  821. account,

  822. but I

  823. think they

  824. were happening

  825. at about

  826. the same

  827. time.

  828. Verse 45

  829. and following,

  830. many of

  831. the Jews

  832. therefore,

  833. who had

  834. come with

  835. Mary and

  836. had seen

  837. what he

  838. did,

  839. raising

  840. Lazarus

  841. from the

  842. dead,

  843. believed in

  844. him.

  845. But some

  846. of them

  847. went to

  848. the Pharisees

  849. and told

  850. them what

  851. Jesus had

  852. done.

  853. So the

  854. chief

  855. priests and

  856. the Pharisees

  857. gathered the

  858. council and

  859. said,

  860. what are we

  861. to do?

  862. For this

  863. man performs

  864. many signs.

  865. If we let

  866. him go on

  867. like this,

  868. everyone will

  869. believe in

  870. him.

  871. And the

  872. Romans will

  873. come and

  874. take away

  875. both our

  876. place and

  877. our nation.

  878. Hear what

  879. they're concerned

  880. about.

  881. This man is

  882. performing

  883. these miracles,

  884. right?

  885. Raised a

  886. man from

  887. the dead.

  888. They're not

  889. so concerned

  890. about whether

  891. or not it

  892. actually even

  893. happened.

  894. They seem

  895. to believe

  896. that it

  897. did.

  898. But if

  899. he keeps

  900. doing this

  901. kind of

  902. thing,

  903. if he

  904. rises up

  905. as a

  906. ruler,

  907. people are

  908. going to be

  909. following him

  910. and Rome

  911. is not

  912. going to

  913. like it.

  914. And what

  915. will happen?

  916. We will

  917. lose our

  918. place and

  919. our nation,

  920. our status.

  921. We will

  922. not have

  923. the power

  924. that we

  925. presently

  926. enjoy.

  927. Verse 49,

  928. But one

  929. of them,

  930. Caiaphas,

  931. who was

  932. high priest

  933. that year,

  934. said to

  935. them,

  936. You know

  937. nothing at

  938. all,

  939. nor do

  940. you

  941. understand

  942. that it

  943. is better

  944. for you

  945. that one

  946. man should

  947. die for

  948. the people,

  949. not that

  950. the whole

  951. nation should

  952. perish.

  953. This is

  954. fascinating.

  955. He did

  956. not say

  957. this of

  958. his own

  959. accord,

  960. but being

  961. high priest

  962. that year,

  963. he prophesied

  964. that Jesus

  965. would die

  966. for the

  967. nation.

  968. But their

  969. understanding

  970. of it was

  971. rather perverted,

  972. wasn't it?

  973. They were

  974. saying,

  975. if we can

  976. kill this

  977. guy and

  978. get him

  979. out of

  980. the way,

  981. we can

  982. keep on

  983. going the

  984. way we

  985. are.

  986. Rather than

  987. seeing that

  988. the words

  989. that God

  990. was speaking

  991. through him,

  992. would be

  993. to say

  994. that Christ

  995. came to

  996. die for

  997. them on

  998. their behalf,

  999. that they

  1000. might come

  1001. to God

  1002. by faith

  1003. in him.

  1004. It's a very

  1005. interesting turn

  1006. there.

  1007. And then

  1008. verse 52

  1009. says,

  1010. the older brother

  1011. beats the

  1012. father to

  1013. death.

  1014. Praise be to

  1015. God that

  1016. he purposed

  1017. that Jesus

  1018. should die.

  1019. that by

  1020. the hands

  1021. of wicked

  1022. men

  1023. our

  1024. savior

  1025. was

  1026. murdered,

  1027. but that

  1028. three days

  1029. later he

  1030. declared

  1031. victory over

  1032. sin and

  1033. death when

  1034. he was

  1035. raised from

  1036. the dead,

  1037. and that

  1038. now we

  1039. by faith

  1040. may have

  1041. life in

  1042. him.

  1043. What they

  1044. meant for

  1045. evil,

  1046. God

  1047. meant for

  1048. good.

  1049. This morning

  1050. let us

  1051. rejoice in

  1052. the unfailing

  1053. love of

  1054. the father.

  1055. Join me

  1056. in prayer.
