  1. Well, I most always say, take out your copy of God's Word and turn to.

  2. Just hang on to your copy of God's Word for a moment, and I promise I will tell you where to turn and get there.

  3. I have felt in the past when I've given some longer introductions that you're staring at the text going,

  4. when in the world is he going to get to the text?

  5. There is a text, and we will get to it this morning, I promise, but I want you just to settle in for a moment

  6. as I give you some bit of an introduction to what we intend to do this Sunday and then the next four Sundays.

  7. As mentioned previously in our service, we are going to work through the five solas of the Reformation.

  8. And if you're already a bit confused, a sola is Latin for only.

  9. And so the five solas are sola scriptura, or scripture alone,

  10. and that is that the Bible is God's final authority to man.

  11. Sola gratia, which is to say grace alone, we are saved by God's grace alone.

  12. Sola fide, through faith alone.

  13. Solas Christus, in Jesus Christ alone.

  14. And soli Deo Gloria, to the glory of God alone.

  15. And the Christian life is to be lived to the glory of God.

  16. And so these are the five solas.

  17. The Reformers loved the word sola.

  18. Because remember that they were speaking to Christian contexts, right?

  19. People who, even more than in our day, believed that they were of the Christian faith

  20. simply because they were citizens of the country in which they lived.

  21. They assumed that they were Christians.

  22. And so they're speaking to a people who would have said,

  23. yeah, yes, scripture.

  24. And sure, grace and faith.

  25. And yes, Christ.

  26. And of course, the glory of God.

  27. The Reformers said time and time again,

  28. no, the scripture alone.

  29. Grace alone.

  30. Faith alone.

  31. In Christ alone.

  32. To the glory of God.

  33. Alone.

  34. And these, the structure that we're going to be talking about,

  35. sola scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, sola Christus, sola Deo Gloria,

  36. was not systematized by the Reformers.

  37. And that's the thing that you ought to know.

  38. So as we talk about the Reformers kind of holding these things up as banners

  39. over the Reformation,

  40. it wasn't systematic until much, much later.

  41. But you pick up these themes in so much of their writing,

  42. these various alones that they stood for and supported.

  43. This morning, I want to spend a little bit of time,

  44. as I mentioned, on an introduction.

  45. And then we're going to briefly consider the doctrine of sola scriptura.

  46. But before we begin,

  47. I just want to be clear about a few things for this morning

  48. and in the coming month.

  49. The Protestant Reformation was not the beginning of Christianity.

  50. God has had a people that he has sovereignly preserved from the fall

  51. by a promise.

  52. And that promise was fulfilled in Christ.

  53. He has had a people from the very beginning.

  54. It didn't begin with the Protestant Reformation,

  55. as sometimes we can mistakenly be misunderstood.

  56. The truth of God had not been lost to the world

  57. and then rediscovered by an Augustinian monk

  58. by the name of Martin Luther in the 16th century.

  59. It wasn't completely lost.

  60. It wasn't gone all together.

  61. The truth of God had been preserved by God,

  62. although largely lost to the Western world,

  63. to European Christianity,

  64. buried in a Latin translation

  65. and by Roman Catholic tradition

  66. and papal infallibility,

  67. which at very best obscured the truth

  68. and at very worst and most often replaced it.

  69. God had long been working amongst his people in Europe

  70. to ignite the purifying flame of the Protestant Reformation.

  71. A very popular analogy goes that God has been stacking the kindling for centuries

  72. and that he used Martin Luther's writings as a spark

  73. to ignite the fire that burned so brightly across Europe

  74. to purify the church.

  75. Faithful men, known and unknown,

  76. were used of God.

  77. I'm so thankful for writing and distribution

  78. that began in this same time

  79. so we can know so many of these men.

  80. But it's important to know also

  81. that there are many unknown men

  82. used by God to bring about reform in the church.

  83. Men like John Wycliffe,

  84. who in the 14th century,

  85. much before,

  86. defied Rome and translated the Bible

  87. from Latin into English

  88. and the kindling began to stack up.

  89. So we don't want to see,

  90. while the Reformation was a great turn

  91. in Western Christianity,

  92. it's a very significant thing to consider.

  93. It's been a work of God all the way through.

  94. He threads every single bit of it.

  95. You have heard and will hear a bunch

  96. about the Reformation in the past couple of months.

  97. We've been reading the Reformation ABCs

  98. to the children in the coming month.

  99. But I want to be clear

  100. that we do not worship the Reformers.

  101. They were all fallible men.

  102. And boy, did some of them err.

  103. As much as they got right,

  104. they got much wrong.

  105. And we don't believe every single thing

  106. that the Reformers believed.

  107. But as I've said,

  108. they were men used of God.

  109. Our history,

  110. our church's history,

  111. traces through the redemptive history

  112. of the Bible,

  113. by the way of the church

  114. that we see in the book of Acts,

  115. through the Reformers,

  116. and then through the Puritans,

  117. to today.

  118. The events of the Reformation

  119. were significant,

  120. and we would not exist

  121. as a people for God's possession

  122. if not for them.

  123. Now, I am not saying

  124. that God could not have established

  125. a church in the Americas

  126. without the Reformation.

  127. But I am saying

  128. that God chose

  129. to start a church

  130. in the Americas

  131. with the Reformation.

  132. And so as such,

  133. we should want to know

  134. our history, right?

  135. Much of our history.

  136. This is our family

  137. that we're considering

  138. as we look back

  139. to the lives

  140. of some of these men.

  141. So we should want to know it.

  142. And we should also want

  143. to know our history

  144. because those

  145. who don't know their history

  146. are doomed

  147. to repeat its mistakes.

  148. We do not want to be known

  149. as a church

  150. for what we are against.

  151. However,

  152. sometimes to be clear

  153. about what you are for,

  154. I believe you must state

  155. what you are against.

  156. You must clarify,

  157. not that,

  158. but this.

  159. The Protestant Reformation

  160. began as an attempt

  161. to bring correction

  162. to the Roman Catholic Church.

  163. Martin Luther did not intend

  164. to vacate the church.

  165. In fact,

  166. he was excommunicated.

  167. He was kicked out

  168. of the church,

  169. but he wanted to see

  170. the church correct

  171. its teaching.

  172. But upon Rome's rejection

  173. of the plain teaching

  174. of Scripture,

  175. the Reformers abandoned Rome.

  176. We are Protestants,

  177. and we are Protestants

  178. in that we will protest

  179. any teaching,

  180. not just Roman Catholic teaching,

  181. but any teaching

  182. against justification

  183. by grace alone,

  184. through faith alone,

  185. in Jesus Christ alone.

  186. And there is much teaching

  187. out there in this way.

  188. There is much teaching

  189. in the name of Jesus Christ

  190. that would suggest to people

  191. that they must earn their way

  192. into God's favor.

  193. And beloved,

  194. we can only stand confidently

  195. before God,

  196. be justified before Him

  197. because of what Christ

  198. has accomplished

  199. on our behalf,

  200. because of His perfect life

  201. and perfect death.

  202. And so we protest

  203. any teaching that's

  204. in opposition to that

  205. because we love mankind

  206. and we want mankind

  207. to come to saving faith

  208. in Jesus Christ.

  209. all other teaching

  210. besides the gospel,

  211. the pure gospel,

  212. right?

  213. Justification by faith alone,

  214. by grace alone,

  215. through faith alone,

  216. and Christ alone

  217. is damning.

  218. It's dangerous

  219. for people.

  220. And so we must

  221. defend

  222. the truth.

  223. And so the Reformation

  224. has a great deal

  225. of bearing

  226. for our lives

  227. today.

  228. It means something

  229. for us,

  230. and we ought to take

  231. some time

  232. to understand it

  233. and to study it.

  234. And I want to try

  235. to do something

  236. multimedia,

  237. so Harold,

  238. wink, wink,

  239. nod, nod,

  240. back there.

  241. We don't tend

  242. to do things

  243. like this very often

  244. for the potential

  245. failure of technology,

  246. but Harold's going

  247. to try to play

  248. a video for you

  249. that was played at,

  250. the video was played

  251. at a conference

  252. that happens

  253. every two years.

  254. I would love

  255. for you all

  256. to get to go

  257. to one of them

  258. called Together

  259. for the Gospel.

  260. And I don't recall,

  261. 2016, I think,

  262. maybe,

  263. anyway,

  264. it doesn't really matter.

  265. But this is a video

  266. of a man named

  267. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  268. speaking on the

  269. 450th anniversary,

  270. so 50 years ago,

  271. about the significance

  272. of the Protestant

  273. Reformation.

  274. And just to give you

  275. a quick story

  276. about Lloyd-Jones,

  277. many people call him

  278. the doctor,

  279. he was a physician

  280. before he was a pastor,

  281. and the first church

  282. that he was hired

  283. to pastor

  284. was very well known

  285. for its dramas.

  286. In fact,

  287. they would often

  288. not have preaching

  289. on Sunday morning,

  290. but would instead

  291. have plays.

  292. And the pulpit

  293. on the stage

  294. was movable,

  295. and there's nothing

  296. wrong with having

  297. a movable pulpit,

  298. but it was movable

  299. so that they could

  300. put on these plays.

  301. And on his

  302. very first Sunday

  303. when he got up,

  304. opened God's Word,

  305. he first

  306. announced that he

  307. was disbanding

  308. the dramatee,

  309. and then physically,

  310. in reality,

  311. took a handful

  312. of nails

  313. and a hammer

  314. and nailed

  315. the pulpit

  316. down to the stage.

  317. He said,

  318. the Word of God

  319. will be central

  320. in the life

  321. of the church.

  322. So this is

  323. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  324. 20th century

  325. English pastor

  326. in this video,

  327. so take a look.

  328. Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  329. will now address us.

  330. At a time like this,

  331. with the world

  332. as it is,

  333. and with this

  334. multiplicity of problems

  335. that are pressing

  336. in upon us

  337. on all sides,

  338. why turn back

  339. and consider

  340. what happened

  341. 400 years ago?

  342. Now, as I understand it,

  343. there are two main

  344. objections

  345. to the doing

  346. of what we are meant

  347. to do this evening.

  348. The first is

  349. a general objection

  350. to looking back,

  351. a feeling

  352. that the past

  353. has nothing

  354. to teach us,

  355. that after all,

  356. we are the people

  357. of the 20th century.

  358. We are the people

  359. who have split the atom.

  360. We are the people

  361. who are encompassing

  362. all knowledge.

  363. We are the people

  364. who have advanced

  365. to such giddy heights

  366. that our forefathers

  367. could not even

  368. have imagined them.

  369. Why should we

  370. of old people

  371. look back,

  372. and especially

  373. look back

  374. for 400 years?

  375. That's one objection.

  376. The other is,

  377. the Reformation

  378. was a tragedy.

  379. We are told that

  380. what we should be

  381. considering today

  382. is unity,

  383. and that if we

  384. spend our time

  385. in considering

  386. a kind of disruption

  387. in the church,

  388. or a division

  389. such as took place

  390. 400 years ago,

  391. we are doing

  392. something that is sinful.

  393. And there is,

  394. alas,

  395. an increasing

  396. body of opinion

  397. in Protestant circles,

  398. which openly

  399. and unashamedly

  400. is saying

  401. that the Protestant

  402. Reformation

  403. was a tragedy,

  404. and that it is

  405. our business

  406. to forget it

  407. as soon as we can,

  408. and to do

  409. everything possible

  410. to heal the breach

  411. so that we

  412. should be back

  413. again,

  414. one with the

  415. church at home,

  416. and there should

  417. be one great

  418. world church.

  419. I have a feeling

  420. that you've come

  421. together to

  422. demonstrate,

  423. that you've come

  424. together to make

  425. a declaration,

  426. and that is

  427. that unlike so

  428. many others

  429. at this present

  430. time,

  431. you're not ashamed

  432. of the Protestant

  433. Reformation.

  434. The greatest need

  435. of this country

  436. tonight and of

  437. the whole world

  438. is to recapture

  439. that principle

  440. that fired the

  441. men at the

  442. time of the

  443. Protestant

  444. Reformation.

  445. What was it

  446. about?

  447. Justification

  448. by faith.

  449. How does a man

  450. stand just

  451. before God?

  452. God

  453. I got a head

  454. start there.

  455. You wouldn't

  456. think I've

  457. watched the

  458. video 20

  459. times this

  460. week.

  461. Any teaching

  462. of the gospel

  463. of Jesus Christ

  464. that doesn't

  465. teach that we

  466. come to Christ

  467. by faith alone

  468. is an

  469. anti-gospel.

  470. And any

  471. uniting and

  472. joining with

  473. people without

  474. the truth

  475. is not

  476. unity at

  477. all.

  478. Any expression

  479. of love

  480. without the

  481. truth is

  482. not love

  483. at all.

  484. And beloved,

  485. this history

  486. repeats itself

  487. and you're

  488. going to hear

  489. across this

  490. next month

  491. many people

  492. make cries

  493. for what's

  494. called ecumenicalism,

  495. us coming

  496. back together

  497. for the sake

  498. of unity

  499. and the sake

  500. of peace.

  501. And those

  502. are words

  503. that I also

  504. love but

  505. not devoid

  506. of the

  507. truth.

  508. It's good

  509. for people

  510. that we

  511. proclaim boldly

  512. the gospel

  513. of Jesus

  514. Christ,

  515. justification

  516. by grace

  517. alone

  518. through faith

  519. alone,

  520. in Christ

  521. alone.

  522. And so we

  523. must learn

  524. from the

  525. past.

  526. We must

  527. arm ourselves

  528. so that we

  529. can understand

  530. the world

  531. in which we

  532. live,

  533. that we

  534. might speak

  535. clearly

  536. into it.

  537. On your

  538. bulletin

  539. today,

  540. the historical

  541. quote,

  542. Martin Luther

  543. said,

  544. the time

  545. for silence

  546. is past

  547. and the

  548. time to

  549. speak

  550. has come.

  551. So let's

  552. talk a bit

  553. about Martin

  554. Luther,

  555. and we

  556. are almost

  557. to the

  558. text,

  559. I promise.

  560. And this

  561. event that

  562. we're working

  563. toward,

  564. the 500th

  565. anniversary

  566. of October

  567. 31st,

  568. 1517.

  569. Now,

  570. as I

  571. mentioned

  572. previously

  573. in bit,

  574. it'd be a

  575. little unfair

  576. to say this

  577. is when

  578. the

  579. reformation

  580. really began.

  581. In fact,

  582. we could

  583. probably more

  584. accurately say

  585. it began

  586. in the

  587. following year,

  588. so maybe

  589. we'll also

  590. celebrate it

  591. next year.

  592. Martin Luther

  593. did not

  594. originally set

  595. out to be

  596. a monk.

  597. His original

  598. intention was

  599. to be a

  600. lawyer,

  601. but in

  602. the process

  603. of his

  604. life,

  605. he was

  606. deeply

  607. troubled

  608. by the

  609. status of

  610. his soul.

  611. He was

  612. asking this

  613. question,

  614. what makes

  615. me right

  616. before God?

  617. and he

  618. was not

  619. finding it

  620. in the

  621. religion

  622. of the

  623. day,

  624. although he

  625. was

  626. working

  627. and

  628. working

  629. and

  630. working

  631. to be

  632. found

  633. right

  634. before God.

  635. The story

  636. goes that one

  637. evening in a

  638. very intense

  639. lightning storm,

  640. lightning striking

  641. all about him,

  642. that he

  643. cried out,

  644. rather ironically,

  645. not directly to

  646. God,

  647. but through

  648. the saint,

  649. Anne,

  650. that if he

  651. would just be

  652. spared from the

  653. storm,

  654. that he would

  655. become a

  656. monk.

  657. So he

  658. lived,

  659. and he

  660. became an

  661. Augustinian

  662. monk by the

  663. great providence

  664. of God.

  665. But as a

  666. monk,

  667. still working

  668. and laboring,

  669. he was still

  670. very troubled

  671. by the state

  672. of his soul,

  673. and in order

  674. to put his

  675. mind to rest,

  676. they put him

  677. to work

  678. translating the

  679. Bible.

  680. It's a bit

  681. of a mistake

  682. on their

  683. part.

  684. They put him

  685. to the task

  686. of translating

  687. the book of

  688. Romans.

  689. And in

  690. Romans 1,

    Romans 1:17

  691. verse 17,

  692. he came

  693. across this

  694. phrase,

  695. the righteous

  696. shall live

  697. by faith.

  698. And by the

  699. illumination of

  700. the Spirit,

  701. he came to

  702. understand,

  703. and it was

  704. not by works

  705. that we are

  706. righteous before

  707. God,

  708. but because

  709. of faith.

  710. And the

  711. Christian life

  712. was meant to

  713. be a life

  714. of repentance,

  715. which was

  716. counter to

  717. Roman Catholic

  718. teaching,

  719. and still

  720. is.

  721. They teach

  722. that life

  723. is to

  724. be a life

  725. of penance,

  726. doing your

  727. work to

  728. fill the

  729. hole,

  730. the vacuum

  731. that you've

  732. created by

  733. your rebellion

  734. against God.

  735. But the

  736. righteous

  737. shall live

  738. by faith.

  739. So in

  740. that day,

  741. the Roman

  742. church was

  743. trying to

  744. raise money

  745. to build

  746. St. Peter's

  747. Basilica,

  748. which exists.

  749. You can find

  750. pictures of it

  751. online and

  752. even visit it

  753. in Rome.

  754. And so

  755. because of

  756. the great

  757. cost of

  758. building such

  759. a building,

  760. they perpetuated

  761. a practice

  762. that had been

  763. going on for

  764. quite some

  765. years of

  766. the selling

  767. of indulgences.

  768. You may hear

  769. the name

  770. Tetzel from

  771. time to

  772. time,

  773. a man who

  774. went around

  775. selling

  776. indulgences.

  777. And what

  778. indulgences were

  779. were little

  780. bits of

  781. paper that

  782. supposedly

  783. bought you

  784. and or your

  785. loved ones

  786. time out of

  787. purgatory.

  788. Unbiblical

  789. teaching,

  790. but nonetheless,

  791. the church of

  792. Rome taught

  793. that there was

  794. this interstitial

  795. period of

  796. time where

  797. you continued

  798. to pay the

  799. penance until

  800. the penance

  801. was paid

  802. off before

  803. you could

  804. go to

  805. heaven.

  806. And they

  807. sold indulgences

  808. in order to

  809. raise money

  810. for the church

  811. and were

  812. being quite

  813. successful at

  814. it.

  815. On October

  816. 31st,

  817. 1517,

  818. Luther nailed

  819. a document,

  820. and this was

  821. an entirely

  822. appropriate thing

  823. to do in

  824. the day.

  825. The church

  826. building's door

  827. was like a

  828. bulletin board,

  829. so please

  830. don't put

  831. anything on

  832. our door.

  833. He nailed

  834. a document

  835. entitled

  836. what we

  837. know as

  838. the 95

  839. Theses,

  840. which were

  841. 95 reasons

  842. that the

  843. selling of

  844. indulgences

  845. was unbiblical.

  846. 95 reasons.

  847. And this

  848. was the

  849. Wittenberg,

  850. you heard

  851. Judah saying,

  852. spelled with a

  853. W, but it's

  854. German,

  855. the Wittenberg

  856. church door.

  857. Now some

  858. time passed,

  859. the end of

  860. February,

  861. beginning of

  862. March of the

  863. following year,

  864. the 95

  865. Theses were

  866. translated into

  867. German,

  868. without Luther's

  869. permission,

  870. I will add,

  871. by a printer.

  872. We don't know

  873. why the printer

  874. did it,

  875. we don't

  876. actually know

  877. specifically who

  878. the printer

  879. was,

  880. but either for

  881. financial gain

  882. or maybe his

  883. zeal for the

  884. word of God,

  885. he got a copy

  886. of it,

  887. he translated

  888. it into

  889. German,

  890. printed it,

  891. and distributed

  892. it widely

  893. around Germany.

  894. So this

  895. intention of

  896. Luther's to

  897. address the

  898. issue with the

  899. church of Rome

  900. became a

  901. national issue.

  902. The common

  903. people began to

  904. have the word of

  905. God in their

  906. hands,

  907. not just in

  908. Latin.

  909. This is a great

  910. trouble of the

  911. day.

  912. The Roman

  913. church held the

  914. scripture in

  915. Latin,

  916. they taught it in

  917. Latin when they

  918. taught it at all,

  919. so it would be

  920. read in Latin,

  921. and then the

  922. priest would give

  923. explanation of

  924. it.

  925. It's quite a

  926. convenience to be

  927. able to say

  928. whatever it is

  929. you want to

  930. say.

  931. And so it

  932. was a big

  933. affront to

  934. this type of

  935. teaching,

  936. this type of

  937. use of the

  938. scripture.

  939. He was

  940. excommunicated,

  941. years have

  942. gone on,

  943. he's been

  944. teaching,

  945. he's been

  946. writing,

  947. writing widely.

  948. In January

  949. of 1521,

  950. and then in

  951. April of

  952. 1521,

  953. he was

  954. summoned to

  955. what is known

  956. as the

  957. Diet of

  958. Worms,

  959. which unfortunately

  960. looks like

  961. Diet of

  962. Worms.

  963. In English,

  964. it's the

  965. Diet of

  966. Worms,

  967. where he was

  968. summoned essentially

  969. to recant of

  970. the things that

  971. he had taught

  972. and wrote.

  973. The Church of

  974. Rome was

  975. hoping to

  976. bring about

  977. peace.

  978. He did this

  979. in front of

  980. the Roman

  981. emperor of

  982. the time,

  983. so it's not

  984. a small deal.

  985. We often

  986. see Luther

  987. as this

  988. amazingly

  989. bold,

  990. brash

  991. individual,

  992. and he

  993. was very

  994. brash at

  995. times,

  996. but he

  997. was sick

  998. vomiting the

  999. night before,

  1000. having to

  1001. stand before

  1002. this council

  1003. and to

  1004. defend what

  1005. he had

  1006. written.

  1007. He was a

  1008. weak man,

  1009. but made

  1010. strong in

  1011. Christ.

  1012. The two

  1013. questions that

  1014. were asked

  1015. of him,

  1016. did he

  1017. acknowledge

  1018. the authorship

  1019. of books

  1020. that had

  1021. been brought

  1022. to the

  1023. Diet and

  1024. that bore

  1025. his name,

  1026. a stack of

  1027. them that he

  1028. had written,

  1029. against the

  1030. Roman church,

  1031. and would

  1032. he stand

  1033. by them

  1034. or retract

  1035. anything in

  1036. them?

  1037. And Luther

  1038. asked,

  1039. this is April

  1040. 17th,

  1041. Luther asked

  1042. for 24

  1043. hours to

  1044. consider his

  1045. response.

  1046. So on

  1047. April 18th

  1048. of 1521,

  1049. he said

  1050. this,

  1051. this was

  1052. his defense,

  1053. unless I'm

  1054. convinced by

  1055. the testimony

  1056. of scripture

  1057. or by

  1058. clear reason,

  1059. for I

  1060. trust neither

  1061. pope nor

  1062. counsel alone,

  1063. since it is

  1064. well known that

  1065. they have often

  1066. erred and

  1067. contradicted

  1068. themselves,

  1069. I am bound

  1070. by the

  1071. scriptures I

  1072. have cited,

  1073. for my

  1074. conscience is

  1075. captive to

  1076. the word of

  1077. God.

  1078. I cannot

  1079. and will

  1080. not recant

  1081. anything,

  1082. since to

  1083. act against

  1084. one's conscience

  1085. is neither

  1086. safe nor

  1087. right.

  1088. I cannot

  1089. do otherwise,

  1090. here I

  1091. stand,

  1092. may God

  1093. help me.

  1094. And so

  1095. he's

  1096. dismissed

  1097. from the

  1098. diet,

  1099. thankfully he's

  1100. encouraged to

  1101. get out of

  1102. town as

  1103. they're

  1104. arriving at

  1105. his

  1106. sentence.

  1107. He had

  1108. already been

  1109. declared a

  1110. heretic,

  1111. now he's

  1112. declared a

  1113. traitor to

  1114. the state

  1115. and sentenced

  1116. to death.

  1117. But he

  1118. staged a

  1119. supposed

  1120. kidnapping

  1121. on his

  1122. route home,

  1123. rescued him

  1124. away,

  1125. he's put

  1126. up in

  1127. a German

  1128. castle where

  1129. he spends

  1130. some months

  1131. translating the

  1132. New Testament,

  1133. the entire

  1134. New Testament

  1135. into German,

  1136. which is a

  1137. rather phenomenal

  1138. feat that he

  1139. accomplished.

  1140. And the

  1141. word of God

  1142. continued to

  1143. go forth

  1144. in Germany.

  1145. So we're

  1146. looking this

  1147. morning at

  1148. Sola

  1149. Scriptura.

  1150. So please

  1151. turn with me

  1152. in a copy

  1153. of God's

  1154. word,

  1155. breathe a

  1156. big sigh

  1157. of relief,

  1158. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  1159. chapter 3.

  1160. Our text

  1161. for today

  1162. is 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:14

  1163. chapter 3

  1164. verse 14

  1165. through

  1166. chapter 4

  1167. verse 4.

  1168. Before I

  1169. read it for

  1170. our benefit,

  1171. let me remind

  1172. you,

  1173. beloved,

  1174. this is

  1175. God's

  1176. word to

  1177. us.

  1178. It was

  1179. written for

  1180. his glory

  1181. and our

  1182. good,

  1183. and we

  1184. would all

  1185. do well

  1186. to listen

  1187. to it

  1188. in order

  1189. to believe

  1190. its promises

  1191. and obey

  1192. its commands.

  1193. 2 Timothy

  1194. 3,

  1195. beginning

  1196. in verse

  1197. 14 and

  1198. following.

  1199. But as

  1200. for you,

  1201. continue in

  1202. what you

  1203. have learned

  1204. and have

  1205. firmly

  1206. believed,

  1207. knowing from

  1208. whom you

  1209. learned it,

  1210. and how from

  1211. childhood you

  1212. have been

  1213. acquainted with

  1214. the sacred

  1215. writings which

  1216. are able to

  1217. make you wise

  1218. for salvation

  1219. through faith

  1220. in Jesus

  1221. Christ.

  1222. All

  1223. scripture is

  1224. breathed out

  1225. by God

  1226. and profitable

  1227. for teaching,

  1228. for reproof,

  1229. for correction,

  1230. and for training

  1231. in righteousness,

  1232. that the man

  1233. of God may be

  1234. complete,

  1235. equipped for

  1236. every good

  1237. work.

  1238. I charge

  1239. you in the

  1240. presence of

  1241. God and

  1242. of Christ

  1243. Jesus,

  1244. who is to

  1245. judge the

  1246. living and

  1247. the dead,

  1248. and by his

  1249. appearing and

  1250. his kingdom,

  1251. preach the

  1252. word.

  1253. Be ready in

  1254. season and

  1255. out of season.

  1256. Reprove,

  1257. rebuke,

  1258. and exhort

  1259. with complete

  1260. patience and

  1261. teaching.

  1262. For the time

  1263. is coming when

  1264. people will not

  1265. endure sound

  1266. teaching,

  1267. but having

  1268. itching ears,

  1269. they will

  1270. accumulate for

  1271. themselves teachers

  1272. to suit their

  1273. own passions,

  1274. and will turn

  1275. away from

  1276. listening to the

  1277. truth.

  1278. And wander

  1279. off into

  1280. myths.

  1281. Our outline for

  1282. this morning is

  1283. as follows.

  1284. Three points.

  1285. Number one,

  1286. the scripture

  1287. alone is God's

  1288. final authority.

  1289. The scripture

  1290. alone is God's

  1291. final authority.

  1292. Number two,

  1293. the scripture

  1294. alone is God's

  1295. final authority

  1296. for justification.

  1297. sanctification.

  1298. And number

  1299. three,

  1300. the scripture

  1301. alone is God's

  1302. final authority

  1303. for sanctification.

  1304. Number one,

  1305. we'll take the

  1306. text a bit out

  1307. of order.

  1308. The scripture

  1309. alone is God's

  1310. final authority.

  1311. First, we must

  1312. establish that,

  1313. and we see that

  1314. in chapter four,

  1315. verses one

  1316. through four,

  1317. in this way.

  1318. And I find this

  1319. to be so

  1320. phenomenal.

  1321. In verse three,

  1322. Paul writes to

  1323. Timothy,

  1324. there's going to

  1325. be a time,

  1326. and this was the

  1327. time that Timothy

  1328. himself experienced,

  1329. and we still

  1330. experience this time

  1331. today.

  1332. People are not

  1333. going to endure

  1334. sound teaching.

  1335. There will be

  1336. sound teaching,

  1337. but they won't

  1338. even want to hear

  1339. it.

  1340. And because they

  1341. don't want to

  1342. endure the sound

  1343. teaching,

  1344. they're going

  1345. to accumulate,

  1346. which is a

  1347. strong word.

  1348. Many teachers

  1349. are going to

  1350. accumulate for

  1351. themselves teachers

  1352. to suit their

  1353. own passions.

  1354. They're not going

  1355. to want to hear

  1356. what the word of

  1357. God has to say.

  1358. They're going to

  1359. want to hear what

  1360. they already want

  1361. to hear.

  1362. They're going to

  1363. gather teachers

  1364. around them.

  1365. We're going to

  1366. allow them to go

  1367. on living exactly

  1368. the way they are,

  1369. and they'll turn

  1370. away from listening

  1371. to the truth,

  1372. and they'll wander

  1373. off into myths.

  1374. And the point

  1375. there is pointless

  1376. teaching, right?

  1377. Teaching that has

  1378. no value at all

  1379. for living.

  1380. And what is

  1381. Paul's instruction

  1382. to that?

  1383. I just find this

  1384. so incredibly

  1385. encouraging as a

  1386. pastor.

  1387. This time is

  1388. coming, right?

  1389. And I experience

  1390. it day to day.

  1391. What does he say?

  1392. He says,

  1393. preach the word.

  1394. Verse 2.

  1395. He says,

  1396. preach the word.

  1397. And we're meant

  1398. to be using the

  1399. word in various

  1400. ways.

  1401. Reproving,

  1402. rebuking,

  1403. exhorting all

  1404. different aspects

  1405. of the way in

  1406. which we apply

  1407. the word of God

  1408. to people's life,

  1409. and we're supposed

  1410. to be doing it

  1411. with complete

  1412. patience.

  1413. Man, that floors

  1414. me.

  1415. Like, I so,

  1416. I want to flip

  1417. tables over so

  1418. bad sometimes.

  1419. And Paul here

  1420. instructs Timothy

  1421. to just keep

  1422. preaching the truth.

  1423. Why?

  1424. Because it's

  1425. God's final

  1426. authority.

  1427. Because God

  1428. has spoken

  1429. by his word.

  1430. It's powerful.

  1431. It is right

  1432. to start our

  1433. study with

  1434. sola scriptura

  1435. because a

  1436. proper understanding

  1437. of scripture

  1438. is the beginning

  1439. of our ability

  1440. to understand

  1441. any of the

  1442. other

  1443. solas.

  1444. The doctrine

  1445. of sola scriptura

  1446. is known as

  1447. the formal

  1448. principle,

  1449. and the others

  1450. follow

  1451. from it.

  1452. When the

  1453. Supreme Court

  1454. is trying

  1455. a difficult

  1456. case,

  1457. they look

  1458. at other

  1459. legal decisions

  1460. and laws

  1461. to see what

  1462. unites them.

  1463. They're looking

  1464. at a difficult

  1465. matter that

  1466. needs to be

  1467. settled.

  1468. They look

  1469. out there.

  1470. What decisions

  1471. have been made

  1472. before?

  1473. What else

  1474. is laws

  1475. that are passed

  1476. state to state?

  1477. What is it

  1478. that's similar

  1479. amongst them

  1480. that unites

  1481. them?

  1482. Or, we could

  1483. say,

  1484. norms them.

  1485. They look

  1486. to consensus

  1487. amongst these

  1488. legal decisions

  1489. and laws

  1490. as an appeal

  1491. to an authority

  1492. greater than

  1493. themselves.

  1494. The Supreme

  1495. Court will

  1496. write decisions

  1497. and they're

  1498. always appealing

  1499. to something

  1500. else.

  1501. The consensus

  1502. of other

  1503. decisions,

  1504. other laws,

  1505. and this is

  1506. what's called

  1507. norming.

  1508. So, Martin

  1509. Luther pulled

  1510. in his legal

  1511. training when

  1512. referring to

  1513. scripture as

  1514. the, catch

  1515. this, norm

  1516. of norms

  1517. that cannot

  1518. be normed.

  1519. The norm

  1520. of norms

  1521. that cannot

  1522. be normed.

  1523. The authority

  1524. that has

  1525. no other

  1526. authority,

  1527. or in the

  1528. Latin, because

  1529. it's fun to

  1530. say, norma

  1531. normus

  1532. non normata.

  1533. You can

  1534. remember that,

  1535. I think.

  1536. Norma

  1537. normus

  1538. non normata.

  1539. That is

  1540. to say,

  1541. we believe

  1542. in sola

  1543. scriptura,

  1544. is to say

  1545. that we

  1546. believe that

  1547. the Bible

  1548. is God's

  1549. final authority.

  1550. Now,

  1551. that can

  1552. be misunderstood.

  1553. To say

  1554. that the

  1555. scripture is

  1556. the final

  1557. authority

  1558. is not

  1559. to be

  1560. misunderstood,

  1561. understood that

  1562. the scripture

  1563. is the

  1564. only authority.

  1565. And let me

  1566. explain before

  1567. you get mad at

  1568. me about that

  1569. statement.

  1570. There are many

  1571. people who will

  1572. misunderstand sola

  1573. scriptura to

  1574. mean that all

  1575. they need is

  1576. themselves and

  1577. the Bible.

  1578. And we have

  1579. gotten many

  1580. erroneous

  1581. Christian teaching

  1582. from a

  1583. misunderstanding of

  1584. what sola

  1585. scriptura means.

  1586. People who

  1587. will go off and

  1588. just reinterpret

  1589. it to mean

  1590. whatever they

  1591. want it to

  1592. mean.

  1593. A lot of

  1594. people's

  1595. hesitation to

  1596. even understand

  1597. the Bible to

  1598. be God's

  1599. authoritative

  1600. word is that

  1601. they've heard

  1602. so many

  1603. different

  1604. understandings of

  1605. the scripture.

  1606. That's why we

  1607. don't have Bible

  1608. studies where we

  1609. say, what does

  1610. this text mean

  1611. to you?

  1612. The text means

  1613. one thing.

  1614. How do we

  1615. apply it in

  1616. our living?

  1617. So we don't

  1618. mean that when

  1619. we say sola

  1620. scriptura.

  1621. It's not the

  1622. only authority.

  1623. It's just the

  1624. supreme.

  1625. It's the

  1626. final.

  1627. It's the

  1628. governing

  1629. authority.

  1630. Right?

  1631. It's the

  1632. norm of norms

  1633. that cannot

  1634. be normed.

  1635. The Bible

  1636. should not

  1637. be read

  1638. quote unquote

  1639. alone.

  1640. Martin Luther

  1641. said this,

  1642. the scripture's

  1643. authority is

  1644. not a

  1645. naked

  1646. authority.

  1647. And that

  1648. is to say,

  1649. we should

  1650. also look

  1651. to, in

  1652. helping us

  1653. understand what

  1654. the scripture

  1655. means, things

  1656. like church

  1657. history.

  1658. It's helpful

  1659. for us to go

  1660. back and look,

  1661. what has the

  1662. church historically

  1663. believed to be

  1664. true about the

  1665. scripture?

  1666. If you find

  1667. yourself coming

  1668. to an

  1669. understanding of

  1670. the Bible that

  1671. no one else in

  1672. the history of

  1673. the church has

  1674. understood to be

  1675. true of the

  1676. Bible, you

  1677. might need to

  1678. rethink that

  1679. position on the

  1680. scripture.

  1681. And, beloved,

  1682. this happens

  1683. all the time.

  1684. So we look

  1685. to church

  1686. history, and

  1687. there's a lot

  1688. of messes in

  1689. church history

  1690. too, and

  1691. there's a lot

  1692. of condemned

  1693. heresies in

  1694. history as

  1695. well, but it

  1696. can be a

  1697. help to us

  1698. in that.

  1699. We look to

  1700. creeds and

  1701. confessions,

  1702. things that help

  1703. us gather

  1704. together and

  1705. to unify what

  1706. the church has

  1707. believed the

  1708. scripture teaches

  1709. about particular

  1710. topics.

  1711. We look to

  1712. the teaching

  1713. of leaders,

  1714. church leaders.

  1715. You know,

  1716. once upon a

  1717. time, the

  1718. position of

  1719. pastor was

  1720. a reverenced

  1721. position.

  1722. You know that?

  1723. In our day

  1724. now, sometimes

  1725. I feel a little

  1726. ashamed when I

  1727. tell people I'm

  1728. a pastor because

  1729. some of the

  1730. jokers out

  1731. there, right,

  1732. they just get

  1733. up and

  1734. entertain and

  1735. say nothing

  1736. of any value

  1737. whatsoever.

  1738. When a

  1739. pastor rightly

  1740. comes up and

  1741. opens up the

  1742. word of God,

  1743. he speaks with

  1744. authority, not

  1745. a new

  1746. revelation, but

  1747. because he

  1748. speaks of the

  1749. word of God,

  1750. right?

  1751. Preaching is

  1752. authoritative

  1753. because proper

  1754. preaching is

  1755. Bible preaching.

  1756. It tells you

  1757. what the text

  1758. means and

  1759. gives it

  1760. application for

  1761. your living.

  1762. The writer of

  1763. Hebrews,

    Hebrews 13:7

  1764. chapter 13,

  1765. verse 7,

  1766. says,

  1767. remember your

  1768. leaders,

  1769. those who spoke

  1770. to you the

  1771. word of God.

  1772. Consider the

  1773. outcome of the

  1774. way of life

  1775. and imitate

  1776. their faith.

  1777. So we have

  1778. at our disposal

  1779. all of these

  1780. tools,

  1781. but the

  1782. scripture is

  1783. the final

  1784. authority.

  1785. If you're a

  1786. member of

  1787. Christ Family

  1788. Church,

  1789. Dahlonega,

  1790. or have been

  1791. to a CFC

  1792. 101 and not

  1793. become a member

  1794. yet, you've

  1795. heard me talk

  1796. about our

  1797. statement of

  1798. faith as a

  1799. church.

  1800. We have

  1801. statement of

  1802. faith that's

  1803. got 18

  1804. articles,

  1805. clarifying

  1806. statements about

  1807. what we believe

  1808. the Bible

  1809. teaches about

  1810. these various

  1811. topics.

  1812. I'm always

  1813. so careful

  1814. to say that

  1815. the statement

  1816. of faith is

  1817. not authoritative,

  1818. but is only

  1819. in that it's

  1820. consistent with

  1821. the scripture,

  1822. right?

  1823. So we can be

  1824. shown that we

  1825. have erred with

  1826. the Bible and

  1827. plain logic

  1828. because the

  1829. scripture is

  1830. the final

  1831. authority.

  1832. The scriptures

  1833. are the only

  1834. inerrant

  1835. revelation of

  1836. God to man,

  1837. and it is

  1838. a closed

  1839. canon.

  1840. So we see

  1841. in our text

  1842. today the

  1843. remedy for

  1844. people who

  1845. will be

  1846. carried off

  1847. by myth,

  1848. preach the

  1849. truth,

  1850. the final

  1851. authority,

  1852. right?

  1853. Prove,

  1854. reprove,

  1855. rebuke,

  1856. exhort with

  1857. complete patience

  1858. and with

  1859. teaching.

  1860. So the

  1861. scripture alone

  1862. is God's

  1863. final authority.

  1864. And that

  1865. means something

  1866. for us,

  1867. right?

  1868. There's

  1869. something at

  1870. stake when

  1871. we say

  1872. that.

  1873. So number

  1874. two,

  1875. the scripture

  1876. alone is

  1877. God's final

  1878. authority for

  1879. justification.

  1880. Justification is

  1881. a legal term.

  1882. It has to do

  1883. with our

  1884. standing before

  1885. God,

  1886. right?

  1887. Will we

  1888. stand before

  1889. God condemned

  1890. or forgiven?

  1891. Right?

  1892. If we are

  1893. justified,

  1894. we are forgiven

  1895. when we stand

  1896. before God.

  1897. Our record of

  1898. wrong has been

  1899. dismissed.

  1900. So the

  1901. scripture alone

  1902. is God's

  1903. final authority

  1904. for justification.

  1905. Back up to the

  1906. top of the

  1907. text,

  1908. verses 14

  1909. and 15

  1910. of chapter

  1911. 3.

  1912. Paul encourages

  1913. Timothy to

  1914. continue in what

  1915. he has learned

  1916. and firmly

  1917. believed,

  1918. knowing from

  1919. whom he

  1920. learned it.

  1921. He learned it

  1922. from Paul,

  1923. an apostle,

  1924. right?

  1925. Who is presently

  1926. in the process

  1927. of writing the

  1928. scripture.

  1929. He's writing a

  1930. letter to him

  1931. now that has

  1932. been canonized.

  1933. It's part of

  1934. our scripture,

  1935. 2 Timothy.

  1936. And how

  1937. from your

  1938. childhood you

  1939. have been

  1940. acquainted with

  1941. the sacred

  1942. writings.

  1943. It's almost

  1944. like Paul

  1945. says both

  1946. the New

  1947. Testament and

  1948. the Old

  1949. Testament.

  1950. Remember

  1951. these things

  1952. which are

  1953. what?

  1954. Which are

  1955. able to

  1956. make you

  1957. wise for

  1958. salvation

  1959. through faith

  1960. in Jesus

  1961. Christ.

  1962. It's the

  1963. word of God

  1964. itself that

  1965. the spirit

  1966. of God

  1967. uses to

  1968. bring about

  1969. our faith.

  1970. So it's

  1971. God's

  1972. final authority

  1973. for justification.

  1974. So beloved,

  1975. as we go out

  1976. into the

  1977. world,

  1978. desiring to

  1979. see people

  1980. come to

  1981. faith in

  1982. Christ,

  1983. it is the

  1984. message of

  1985. Christ that

  1986. we carry.

  1987. And it

  1988. must be a

  1989. message that's

  1990. consistent with

  1991. what the

  1992. scripture teaches.

  1993. I will tell

  1994. you the most

  1995. beneficial way to

  1996. do that is to

  1997. teach the

  1998. Bible.

  1999. Right?

  2000. You can

  2001. certainly share

  2002. the gospel

  2003. without

  2004. specifically

  2005. referencing the

  2006. Bible,

  2007. but I will

  2008. tell you that

  2009. it's harder

  2010. to err if

  2011. you actually

  2012. open the

  2013. scripture to

  2014. people and

  2015. show them

  2016. where it

  2017. says it.

  2018. Romans chapter

    Romans 10:14

  2019. 10,

  2020. verse 14 and

  2021. following,

  2022. Paul writes,

  2023. how then will

  2024. they call on

  2025. him in whom

  2026. they have not

  2027. believed?

  2028. And how are

  2029. they to believe

  2030. in him in whom

  2031. they have never

  2032. heard?

  2033. Right?

  2034. Here's a

  2035. problem.

  2036. How do people

  2037. come to faith

  2038. in Christ if

  2039. they've not

  2040. heard of

  2041. Christ?

  2042. And how

  2043. are they to

  2044. hear without

  2045. someone preaching?

  2046. If that news

  2047. is not taken

  2048. to these

  2049. people,

  2050. how will

  2051. they believe?

  2052. And understand,

  2053. this is the

  2054. end of verse

  2055. 14,

  2056. that the word

  2057. for preaching

  2058. is not talking

  2059. about what I'm

  2060. doing right now

  2061. necessarily.

  2062. It can include

  2063. what I'm doing

  2064. right now,

  2065. but it just

  2066. means the

  2067. sharing of

  2068. the good

  2069. news of

  2070. Jesus Christ.

  2071. Verse 15,

  2072. and how are

  2073. they to

  2074. preach?

  2075. Unless they

  2076. are sent,

  2077. as it is

  2078. written,

  2079. how beautiful

  2080. are the feet

  2081. of those who

  2082. preach the

  2083. good news.

  2084. But they

  2085. have not all

  2086. obeyed the

  2087. gospel,

  2088. for Isaiah

  2089. says,

  2090. Lord,

  2091. who has

  2092. believed what

  2093. he has

  2094. heard?

  2095. From us.

  2096. And then

  2097. verse 17

  2098. drives the

  2099. point so

  2100. well.

  2101. So,

  2102. faith comes

  2103. from hearing

  2104. and hearing

  2105. through the

  2106. word of

  2107. Christ.

  2108. This is why

  2109. on Sunday

  2110. morning,

  2111. the other

  2112. things we do

  2113. together,

  2114. we come

  2115. together and

  2116. we open

  2117. up God's

  2118. word.

  2119. And this

  2120. isn't the

  2121. only time

  2122. that we

  2123. do it.

  2124. If you

  2125. will pay

  2126. any attention

  2127. to the

  2128. songs that

  2129. we sing,

  2130. it's why

  2131. our songs

  2132. tend to

  2133. be

  2134. wordy,

  2135. they're

  2136. scripture

  2137. rich.

  2138. The

  2139. references

  2140. abound.

  2141. And the

  2142. more you

  2143. read your

  2144. Bible,

  2145. the more

  2146. you're

  2147. going to

  2148. see that

  2149. in the

  2150. songs that

  2151. we sing.

  2152. It's why

  2153. we should

  2154. rightly

  2155. pray the

  2156. word of

  2157. God.

  2158. It ought

  2159. to all

  2160. be

  2161. consistently

  2162. pointing

  2163. you to

  2164. the truth

  2165. of God,

  2166. God's

  2167. final

  2168. authority.

  2169. I have

  2170. nothing,

  2171. zero,

  2172. of any

  2173. value to

  2174. say to

  2175. see you

  2176. justified

  2177. or

  2178. sanctified

  2179. if it

  2180. doesn't

  2181. come from

  2182. God's

  2183. word.

  2184. This is

  2185. why on

  2186. Sunday

  2187. mornings I

  2188. try to

  2189. reference it

  2190. as much

  2191. as I

  2192. possibly

  2193. can

  2194. because I

  2195. don't know

  2196. what else

  2197. to say.

  2198. No good

  2199. stories to

  2200. tell you.

  2201. I just

  2202. have the

  2203. Bible.

  2204. I want

  2205. God to

  2206. work mightily

  2207. by it

  2208. in your

  2209. life.

  2210. Psalm

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  2211. chapter

  2212. 19.

  2213. Verse 7

  2214. through 11.

  2215. This is

  2216. from this

  2217. past week's

  2218. scripture

  2219. reading.

  2220. If you're

  2221. joining us

  2222. in that,

  2223. Psalm

  2224. says,

  2225. the law

  2226. of the

  2227. Lord is

  2228. perfect,

  2229. reviving

  2230. the soul.

  2231. The

  2232. testimony

  2233. of the

  2234. Lord is

  2235. sure,

  2236. making

  2237. wise

  2238. the

  2239. simple.

  2240. The

  2241. precepts

  2242. of the

  2243. Lord are

  2244. right,

  2245. rejoicing

  2246. the heart.

  2247. The

  2248. commandment

  2249. of the

  2250. Lord is

  2251. pure,

  2252. enlightening

  2253. the eyes.

  2254. The

  2255. fear of

  2256. the

  2257. Lord is

  2258. clean,

  2259. enduring

  2260. forever.

  2261. The

  2262. rules of

  2263. the

  2264. Lord are

  2265. true,

  2266. and

  2267. righteous

  2268. altogether.

  2269. More to be

  2270. desired are

  2271. they than

  2272. gold,

  2273. even much

  2274. fine gold,

  2275. sweeter also

  2276. than honey

  2277. and drippings

  2278. of the

  2279. honeycomb.

  2280. Moreover,

  2281. by them

  2282. is your

  2283. servant

  2284. warned.

  2285. In

  2286. keeping

  2287. them,

  2288. there is

  2289. great

  2290. reward.

  2291. God's

  2292. word.

  2293. And so,

  2294. as God's

  2295. people,

  2296. we need

  2297. to love

  2298. God's

  2299. word,

  2300. and we

  2301. need to

  2302. teach

  2303. God's

  2304. word as

  2305. far and

  2306. wide as

  2307. we possibly

  2308. can so

  2309. that people

  2310. can be

  2311. justified,

  2312. so that they

  2313. can respond

  2314. in faith to

  2315. the good

  2316. news.

  2317. People ask

  2318. me from

  2319. time to

  2320. time how

  2321. it is that

  2322. our church

  2323. sees so

  2324. many people

  2325. baptized and

  2326. continues to

  2327. grow,

  2328. and I

  2329. say,

  2330. well,

  2331. we just

  2332. do what

  2333. the scripture

  2334. has instructed

  2335. us to do

  2336. as we gather

  2337. together as

  2338. a church.

  2339. Just get

  2340. together and

  2341. we do the

  2342. things that

  2343. we see the

  2344. Bible teaching

  2345. us.

  2346. The reformers

  2347. called this

  2348. the regulative

  2349. principle.

  2350. If the

  2351. Bible implies

  2352. or expressly

  2353. commands us to

  2354. do something,

  2355. we should do

  2356. it,

  2357. and if it

  2358. doesn't,

  2359. then we

  2360. shouldn't do

  2361. it.

  2362. We should

  2363. stop trying

  2364. to out-innovate

  2365. the scripture.

  2366. People ask

  2367. a lot how

  2368. we get so

  2369. many young

  2370. people to

  2371. come to

  2372. our church.

  2373. There's a

  2374. great panic,

  2375. particularly in

  2376. our denomination,

  2377. because a lot

  2378. of churches

  2379. average age

  2380. is 65 to

  2381. 70,

  2382. and they're

  2383. dying,

  2384. literally.

  2385. The church

  2386. is dwindling

  2387. out as

  2388. people go

  2389. on to be

  2390. with the

  2391. Lord.

  2392. They go,

  2393. how do we

  2394. reach the

  2395. millennials?

  2396. And people

  2397. are starting

  2398. to look to

  2399. me as

  2400. the expert

  2401. or something

  2402. in that,

  2403. and I go,

  2404. we don't do

  2405. anything flashy.

  2406. We just

  2407. open up

  2408. God's

  2409. word.

  2410. Because

  2411. God's

  2412. people love

  2413. God's

  2414. word.

  2415. Thirdly,

  2416. the scripture

  2417. alone is

  2418. God's final

  2419. authority for

  2420. sanctification.

  2421. So we begin

  2422. by the power of

  2423. the spirit in

  2424. the word as

  2425. Christians,

  2426. and we're

  2427. brought along,

  2428. we're perfected,

  2429. we're moved

  2430. towards holiness

  2431. by the power of

  2432. the spirit and

  2433. the application

  2434. of God's

  2435. word.

  2436. If you have

  2437. a trouble

  2438. in this

  2439. world,

  2440. it's either

  2441. physical,

  2442. you should

  2443. go see a

  2444. doctor,

  2445. or it's

  2446. spiritual,

  2447. you should

  2448. go to the

  2449. scripture.

  2450. You should

  2451. have somebody

  2452. mentor you

  2453. in scripture.

  2454. You should

  2455. receive counseling

  2456. from the

  2457. scripture.

  2458. This is the

  2459. solution for

  2460. all of our

  2461. spiritual issues,

  2462. the Bible

  2463. and the

  2464. application of

  2465. the gospel

  2466. of Jesus

  2467. Christ found

  2468. in it.

  2469. verse 16

  2470. and 17.

  2471. All scripture

  2472. is breathed

  2473. out by God,

  2474. he's the

  2475. very source

  2476. of it,

  2477. and it's

  2478. profitable.

  2479. It's profitable

  2480. for teaching,

  2481. for reproof,

  2482. for correction,

  2483. and for training

  2484. in righteousness.

  2485. So it's a tool

  2486. that can be

  2487. picked up,

  2488. right,

  2489. and used,

  2490. employed in

  2491. these various

  2492. means to

  2493. bring about

  2494. righteousness.

  2495. Verse 17,

  2496. that the man

  2497. of God may

  2498. be complete

  2499. and equipped,

  2500. and here's

  2501. the key

  2502. word for

  2503. every good

  2504. work.

  2505. The scripture

  2506. is sufficient

  2507. as a guide

  2508. for all

  2509. holiness.

  2510. You don't

  2511. need to go

  2512. beyond it.

  2513. And you all

  2514. know that I'm

  2515. a big reader

  2516. and a big

  2517. promoter of

  2518. reading,

  2519. but only in

  2520. that those

  2521. books are

  2522. expressions of

  2523. what this

  2524. book teaches,

  2525. right,

  2526. helping us

  2527. to understand

  2528. it more

  2529. clearly.

  2530. What does

  2531. this book

  2532. teach us?

  2533. It is

  2534. sufficient

  2535. as the

  2536. guide and

  2537. rule for

  2538. holiness,

  2539. right?

  2540. We asked the

  2541. kids this

  2542. morning,

  2543. how do we

  2544. know how

  2545. to please

  2546. God?

  2547. The scripture.

  2548. He wrote

  2549. us a complete

  2550. book.

  2551. We need

  2552. nothing

  2553. beyond it,

  2554. and it is

  2555. the final

  2556. authority

  2557. for holy

  2558. living.

  2559. I love

  2560. this.

  2561. Martin

  2562. Luther said,

  2563. a simple

  2564. layman

  2565. religion,

  2566. armed with

  2567. the scripture,

  2568. is to be

  2569. believed above

  2570. a pope or

  2571. a council

  2572. without it.

  2573. And so you,

  2574. beloved,

  2575. have the

  2576. amazing ability

  2577. to know this

  2578. book and to

  2579. pick it up and

  2580. give it application

  2581. in your life by

  2582. the power of the

  2583. spirit and to

  2584. turn around and

  2585. to do that

  2586. for others.

  2587. The ministry of

  2588. the church,

  2589. what we are

  2590. meant to do

  2591. together is to

  2592. be a people

  2593. that minister

  2594. to the word

  2595. of God to

  2596. one another

  2597. and then to

  2598. the community

  2599. around us.

  2600. So we get

  2601. together in

  2602. order to

  2603. minister God's

  2604. word to one

  2605. another that we

  2606. might grow in

  2607. holiness and

  2608. then to turn

  2609. around and go

  2610. out to our

  2611. community and

  2612. to do the

  2613. same.

  2614. Find those

  2615. people who

  2616. are looking for

  2617. the truth.

  2618. When you speak

  2619. their ears perk

  2620. and they say

  2621. there's something

  2622. there, I want

  2623. to hear more.

  2624. The spirit

  2625. works in them

  2626. and draws them

  2627. to the truth

  2628. of Christ

  2629. found in the

  2630. scripture.

  2631. And so this

  2632. encapsulates

  2633. what we mean

  2634. when we talk

  2635. about scripture

  2636. alone.

  2637. Sola

  2638. scriptura.

  2639. God's final

  2640. authority is

  2641. final authority

  2642. for justification

  2643. is final

  2644. authority for

  2645. sanctification.

  2646. If you have

  2647. not experienced

  2648. the beauty of

  2649. the Bible,

  2650. please come

  2651. and read it

  2652. with us.

  2653. Open its pages

  2654. and see how

  2655. God works

  2656. by it.

  2657. If you get

  2658. nothing out of

  2659. Bible reading,

  2660. there is a

  2661. good chance,

  2662. not an

  2663. absolute chance,

  2664. but a good

  2665. chance that you

  2666. don't have the

  2667. spirit of Christ.

  2668. Repent and

  2669. believe.

  2670. Believe in the

  2671. gospel.

  2672. It's found in

  2673. its pages.

  2674. And so find

  2675. joy in doing.

  2676. In closing,

  2677. Martin Luther,

  2678. who wrote a

  2679. number of

  2680. hymns.

  2681. I don't know

  2682. if this poem

  2683. found its way

  2684. into hymn form

  2685. or not.

  2686. So here

  2687. it is a

  2688. poem,

  2689. possibly a hymn

  2690. I'm not aware

  2691. of.

  2692. He wrote this,

  2693. feelings come

  2694. and feelings

  2695. go,

  2696. and feelings

  2697. are deceiving.

  2698. My warrant

  2699. is the word

  2700. of God,

  2701. not else

  2702. is worth

  2703. believing.

  2704. Though all

  2705. my heart

  2706. should feel

  2707. condemned

  2708. for want

  2709. of some

  2710. sweet token,

  2711. there is one

  2712. greater than

  2713. my heart

  2714. whose word

  2715. cannot be

  2716. broken.

  2717. I'll trust

  2718. in God's

  2719. unchanging

  2720. word till

  2721. soul and

  2722. body sever.

  2723. For though

  2724. all things

  2725. shall pass

  2726. away,

  2727. his word

  2728. shall stand

  2729. forever.

  2730. Let's pray

  2731. together.
