  1. So I just kind of want to go ahead and let you know that I'm extremely physically fatigued this morning.

  2. Shorter breath.

  3. Really tired.

  4. And I think I might even would have passed this off to somebody else, but I thought I'll let Caleb do it.

  5. ! Wait a minute, Caleb's doing music. He can't do it.

  6. So I was kind of just thinking I have to deal with it.

  7. So I'm really tired, but I wonder why sometimes God allows me to be so driven down at a time like this.

  8. Where I'm like, this is so important. This is so rich.

  9. I want to feel good for it. I want to have energy for it.

  10. But, and two brothers have quoted the same scripture to me on separate occasions this morning.

  11. But, ultimately, it's so that I may not boast in my own strength that God's grace is sufficient.

  12. And that His power has made perfect in weakness.

  13. And so I've got nothing. I have nothing for you this morning.

  14. Like, you're going to be, if you receive anything good this morning, it's going to be simply because of the grace of God and because of the power of His Word.

  15. And so, throughout the service, just keep me in prayer.

  16. And I pray that.

  17. I was remembering Richard Baxter, who was a Puritan pastor.

  18. He said, a man only preacheth well to others when he first preacheth to his own soul.

  19. And so I've been trying to remind myself that this is not just a lecture on grace.

  20. This is something that's life-giving, even to me, as I think about it, pray over it, read it.

  21. And so, just join me in prayer one more time here.

  22. Father, we gather this morning, not because of any other reason, but to celebrate Your greatness, to celebrate who You are and what You've done for us.

  23. So, Lord, I ask this morning that You would give me just enough to make it through this time,

  24. that Your Word would minister to people, that it would have its desired effect on people.

  25. You would meet each one of us where we are.

  26. You would convict us of sin.

  27. You would break us down.

  28. But then You would build us up and fill us with life because of Christ.

  29. Heal the brokenhearted.

  30. Set the captive free.

  31. Lord, have Your way this morning.

  32. In Christ's name, Amen.

  33. So last week, we started a five-week series on the five solos of the Reformation.

  34. And so, if you don't know, the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation is coming up on October 31st.

  35. And I just kind of want to be clear about this.

  36. It's not a movement that we worship.

  37. It's not certain men that we worship.

  38. It's about the God that worked in that time and brought about certain things for His glory during that time that we worship.

  39. And so, we can learn from the past.

  40. We can learn from those who went before us.

  41. I think it's the height of arrogance, especially in our culture, that we don't need things from the past.

  42. That we're much more advanced and smarter than a lot of the men and women who went before us.

  43. But, you know, as a pastor, as someone who does find much encouragement from history,

  44. I think you would be terrified if you could see the parallels between the modern evangelical church and the medieval church.

  45. I think you would be really terrified.

  46. There's so much that has come back.

  47. And we have very much slipped back into medievalism in a lot of ways.

  48. So, October 31st, 1517 is the day when the German Augustinian monk Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany.

  49. And it was a protest against the selling of indulgences by the Roman church.

  50. The irony of it is that Luther actually thought that Rome was being misrepresented by the selling of indulgences.

  51. He thought this was something that if the Pope knew that this was happening, he would not be okay with it.

  52. So, the irony is he dedicated the 95 theses to Pope Leo.

  53. Pretty funny.

  54. So, then later on he came to find out that, like, wait a minute, this has actually got Rome's stamp of approval on it.

  55. The selling of indulgences, a certified document from Rome that could absolve someone from their sins if they bought it, if they bought it with money.

  56. And you could get yourself or a dead relative out of purgatory or out of hell to go to heaven.

  57. With an indulgence.

  58. And it started when a man named John Tetzel, who was like the number one seller of indulgences in the Holy Roman Empire at the time,

  59. came to Luther's area and he started corrupting his people with the teaching of indulgences.

  60. And it really ticked Luther off.

  61. And so, he said, wait a minute, this is not Scripture.

  62. This is not what grace is.

  63. This is not what salvation is.

  64. And so, he protested, again, to his horror, only to find out at the end of the day that Rome was behind this.

  65. Rome was supporting it.

  66. And so, instead of leaning into Luther's call for reformation, Rome, you know, bucked up against it and pushed against the need for reform.

  67. But I think it's important to say that Luther was not the first reformer.

  68. There were plenty of men who went before him who taught the same things, including people in England like John Wycliffe, which we talked about before.

  69. A man named John Huss, who was a bohemian pastor, who taught that salvation was by grace alone, that the Scripture alone was our authority.

  70. He taught in the language of the common people and not in Latin.

  71. And for that, he was eventually burned at the stake by Rome, stripped him of all his preaching garments.

  72. And supposedly, okay, John Huss said to the bishop who was setting him on fire,

  73. in a hundred years, there's a man that's going to come, and you're not going to be able to stop him.

  74. You're not going to be able to silence him like you're trying to silence me.

  75. And so, almost to the day, a hundred years later, is when Luther came into being a monk.

  76. And here's the irony.

  77. He was actually ordained as a monk in the same cathedral where that bishop was buried.

  78. Like, he was buried underneath where Luther was taking that oath.

  79. And so, the joke goes that after John Huss said,

  80. in a hundred years, someone's going to come and you won't be able to silence,

  81. the bishop said, over my dead body.

  82. So, really, that was a prophecy that came true.

  83. And so, but I want you to be clear that Luther,

  84. Swingley,

  85. John Calvin,

  86. John Huss,

  87. none of these men were perfect men.

  88. If you study them,

  89. you will see that they were in just as much need of these doctrines as we were.

  90. They were not perfect men.

  91. And indeed, some of the things that they did would frighten you, I think.

  92. So, we don't celebrate them.

  93. We celebrate our God that they made much of, right?

  94. And so, the five solas really were consolidated as doctrines,

  95. maybe around the 20th century.

  96. So, it wasn't like the Reformers got together and said,

  97. hey, these are five things that we believe.

  98. It was just things that were being taught.

  99. And we brought them together probably around the 20th century.

  100. And why is important?

  101. Why is that important?

  102. Because, well, first let me tell you what they are.

  103. I apologize.

  104. It means that Scripture alone is our authority.

  105. The salvation is by God's grace alone,

  106. through faith alone,

  107. in Christ alone,

  108. and all to the glory of God alone.

  109. And why is that so important?

  110. Well, if it's not alone,

  111. then you're saying something has to be added.

  112. Then you're saying the Scripture and something.

  113. Grace and something.

  114. Faith and something.

  115. Christ and something.

  116. And to the glory of God and something else.

  117. So, that's why it has to be alone, right?

  118. So, by stating these solas,

  119. you were stating what's true,

  120. and at the same time,

  121. you're stating what was false.

  122. So, the Reformers were saying,

  123. Scripture is not only necessary,

  124. it's sufficient.

  125. Christ is not only necessary,

  126. He's enough.

  127. And that grace is not only necessary,

  128. but God's grace alone is what saves.

  129. So, those are just so important

  130. to keep in our mind

  131. that Rome taught these things,

  132. but they didn't teach them alone.

  133. They just thought that they were necessary and good.

  134. So, today,

  135. it brings us to sola gratia,

  136. grace alone.

  137. And there is so much about this.

  138. I think part of my problem

  139. was I had just a wealth of things

  140. I was looking at this week

  141. that I was just overwhelmed by it all.

  142. So,

  143. God's grace alone is what saves us.

  144. It encompasses all our salvation.

  145. And so,

  146. just to start with this,

  147. the Roman view of grace,

  148. the Roman Catholic view of grace,

  149. then,

  150. and now,

  151. is that grace,

  152. in essence,

  153. is God's merited favor

  154. or divine assistance

  155. that He dispenses

  156. to those who seek to please Him.

  157. Alright?

  158. Grace,

  159. in essence,

  160. is God's merited favor,

  161. which doesn't quite sound right.

  162. So,

  163. they were taught,

  164. then and now,

  165. taught that sinners are justified

  166. by God's grace

  167. plus some merit of their own,

  168. and that the road of salvation

  169. begins with the individual's efforts

  170. aided by the grace of God.

  171. So,

  172. through keeping the commands of Christ,

  173. regular confession,

  174. penance,

  175. taking of the sacraments,

  176. God's grace is,

  177. in fact,

  178. infused into believers.

  179. Like,

  180. it's something that God dispenses

  181. and strengthens you with.

  182. Right?

  183. So,

  184. when enough merit

  185. has been obtained,

  186. then and only then

  187. is it right for God

  188. to justify you

  189. and make you right

  190. in His sight.

  191. But Rome,

  192. at this time,

  193. taught that actually

  194. no one could ever

  195. merit enough

  196. to have salvation.

  197. No one.

  198. Right?

  199. And so,

  200. that's why

  201. purgatory exists.

  202. So,

  203. purgatory

  204. is not a

  205. biblical idea

  206. at all.

  207. But Rome taught,

  208. again,

  209. that no one

  210. can merit enough

  211. salvation,

  212. merit enough

  213. to achieve salvation.

  214. So,

  215. purgatory

  216. is a safety net.

  217. So,

  218. if you can't work it out

  219. in this life,

  220. you fall down

  221. to the next one

  222. and you

  223. are able to work it out

  224. there

  225. and then

  226. later on

  227. be admitted

  228. to heaven.

  229. But if I could,

  230. I would,

  231. many people

  232. have summed up

  233. Rome's teaching

  234. on grace

  235. just like this.

  236. God helps those

  237. who help

  238. themselves.

  239. Okay?

  240. So,

  241. that was a Roman idea.

  242. And,

  243. here's the shocking

  244. thing though.

  245. A study a few years ago

  246. of evangelicals,

  247. half of them

  248. thought that that was

  249. a direct

  250. biblical quotation.

  251. Eighty-four percent

  252. of them believed

  253. it was at least

  254. a biblical idea.

  255. And so,

  256. it's not just

  257. scary

  258. to think that we are

  259. again,

  260. drifting back

  261. into medievalism.

  262. It is

  263. very frightening

  264. indeed.

  265. In fact,

  266. Benjamin Franklin

  267. is the one

  268. who penned that.

  269. God helps those

  270. who help themselves

  271. in Paul Richard's

  272. Almanac

  273. in 1739.

  274. But he really

  275. was echoing

  276. something that

  277. the Roman church

  278. taught

  279. at the time

  280. of the Reformation.

  281. A very popular

  282. phrase that Rome

  283. taught

  284. to the masses

  285. was this phrase,

  286. God will not

  287. deny His grace

  288. to those

  289. who do

  290. what they can.

  291. So,

  292. deep down,

  293. right,

  294. man's sinful

  295. pride wants

  296. to believe

  297. that if we

  298. cannot save

  299. ourselves,

  300. that we at

  301. least can

  302. contribute

  303. something

  304. to aid

  305. in our

  306. salvation.

  307. So,

  308. the Reformers

  309. came along

  310. and said,

  311. no,

  312. God is not,

  313. grace is not

  314. God's merited

  315. favor.

  316. Grace means

  317. His unmerited

  318. favor.

  319. It's the very

  320. opposite of

  321. grace.

  322. You can't have

  323. grace and

  324. merit.

  325. You can either

  326. have merit

  327. or grace.

  328. And so,

  329. if you want a

  330. definition of

  331. God's grace,

  332. here you go.

  333. God's grace

  334. means His

  335. unmerited

  336. favor and

  337. goodness

  338. towards those

  339. who only

  340. deserve

  341. punishment.

  342. God's grace

  343. means His

  344. unmerited

  345. favor and

  346. goodness

  347. towards those

  348. who only

  349. deserve

  350. punishment.

  351. Romans 11,

  352. 6 says,

  353. if it is by

  354. grace,

  355. then it is

  356. no longer

  357. on the

  358. basis of

  359. works.

  360. Otherwise,

  361. grace would

  362. no longer

  363. be grace.

  364. So,

  365. you can't

  366. have both

  367. together.

  368. So,

  369. the Reformers

  370. were saying

  371. grace is not

  372. something God

  373. just dispenses.

  374. It's an

  375. attribute He

  376. possesses.

  377. It's in His

  378. nature to

  379. be gracious.

  380. It's His

  381. kindness and

  382. His grace

  383. alone that

  384. saves.

  385. So,

  386. as we look

  387. at this,

  388. we're going

  389. to use

  390. Ephesians 2

  391. to walk

  392. through this

  393. idea of

  394. grace.

  395. And again,

  396. this is a

  397. scripture alone,

  398. not on just

  399. what people

  400. say.

  401. We're going

  402. to do it in

  403. the form of

  404. questions like

  405. I like to

  406. do a lot

  407. of the time.

  408. So,

  409. I'll read

  410. the text

  411. with you

  412. and

  413. we'll go

  414. from there.

  415. Chapter 2,

  416. verse 1.

  417. And you

  418. were dead

  419. in your

  420. trespasses

  421. and sins,

  422. in which

  423. you once

  424. walked,

  425. following the

  426. course of

  427. this world,

  428. following the

  429. prince of

  430. the power

  431. of the air,

  432. the spirit

  433. that is now

  434. at work,

  435. and the

  436. sons of

  437. disobedience,

  438. among whom

  439. we all

  440. once

  441. live in

  442. the passions

  443. of our

  444. flesh,

  445. carrying out

  446. the desires

  447. of the body

  448. and the mind,

  449. and by

  450. nature,

  451. children of

  452. wrath like

  453. the rest

  454. of mankind.

  455. But God,

  456. being rich in

  457. mercy,

  458. because of the

  459. great love

  460. with which

  461. he loved us,

  462. even when we

  463. were dead

  464. and our

  465. trespasses,

  466. made us alive

  467. together with

  468. Christ,

  469. by grace

  470. you have

  471. been saved,

  472. and raised

  473. us up with

  474. him and

  475. seated us

  476. with him

  477. in heavenly

  478. places in

  479. Christ Jesus,

  480. so that in

  481. the coming

  482. ages he

  483. might show

  484. the immeasurable

  485. riches of

  486. his grace

  487. and kindness

  488. towards us

  489. in Christ

  490. Jesus.

  491. For by grace

  492. you have been

  493. saved through

  494. faith,

  495. and this is

  496. not your

  497. undoing,

  498. it is the

  499. gift of

  500. God,

  501. not a result

  502. of works,

  503. so that no

  504. one may

  505. boast.

  506. For we are

  507. his workmanship,

  508. created in

  509. Christ Jesus

  510. for good

  511. works,

  512. which God

  513. prepared beforehand

  514. that we

  515. should walk

  516. in them.

  517. So that's

  518. our text,

  519. and there is

  520. so much to

  521. learn about

  522. grace in

  523. this text,

  524. so much.

  525. So,

  526. the first

  527. question we're

  528. going to ask

  529. is,

  530. how great

  531. is our

  532. need for

  533. God's

  534. grace?

  535. How great

  536. is our

  537. need for

  538. God's

  539. grace?

  540. We see

  541. this in

  542. the first

  543. three verses,

  544. one through

  545. three,

  546. we see

  547. that our

  548. need is

  549. very,

  550. very great

  551. for God's

  552. grace.

  553. We were

  554. created in

  555. the image

  556. of God,

  557. to walk

  558. with him,

  559. to know

  560. him,

  561. to live

  562. in joyful

  563. obedience

  564. and relationship

  565. with him,

  566. and to honor

  567. him in all

  568. we do,

  569. to reflect

  570. his image

  571. wherever we

  572. go.

  573. We had a

  574. special standing

  575. with God,

  576. unlike anyone

  577. else,

  578. any other

  579. thing in

  580. all the

  581. created

  582. order.

  583. Yet,

  584. tragically,

  585. we know

  586. that each

  587. one of

  588. us have

  589. completely

  590. forfeited

  591. our special

  592. standing

  593. with God

  594. by rebelling

  595. against him,

  596. sinning

  597. against him,

  598. and turning

  599. away from

  600. him.

  601. Isaiah 53,

  602. 6,

  603. all we like

  604. sheep have

  605. gone astray.

  606. We have

  607. turned everyone

  608. to his own

  609. way.

  610. We all

  611. have done

  612. this,

  613. every one

  614. of us.

  615. we have

  616. separated

  617. ourselves

  618. from God

  619. and now

  620. we are

  621. alienated

  622. from him

  623. in our

  624. lost,

  625. fallen

  626. state.

  627. So,

  628. that's the

  629. testimony of

  630. scripture.

  631. It's the

  632. testimony of

  633. history.

  634. If you

  635. think that

  636. man has

  637. some goodness

  638. in him,

  639. you need

  640. to open

  641. your eyes

  642. to your

  643. own heart

  644. and the

  645. world around

  646. you,

  647. and you

  648. will see

  649. that it's

  650. not there.

  651. St. Augustine,

  652. who was a

  653. fourth-century

  654. church father,

  655. he was one

  656. that a lot

  657. of the

  658. reformers

  659. looked to

  660. rediscover,

  661. to pick back

  662. up on

  663. the gospel.

  664. He said,

  665. the whole

  666. humility of

  667. man consists

  668. in the

  669. knowledge of

  670. himself.

  671. So,

  672. let's look at

  673. this text so

  674. we can gain

  675. a better

  676. idea of

  677. that.

  678. First off,

  679. we see that

  680. man is

  681. dead in

  682. his

  683. trespasses

  684. and sin.

  685. So,

  686. again,

  687. many in

  688. our

  689. churches

  690. today,

  691. just like

  692. in the

  693. medieval

  694. Roman

  695. church,

  696. we

  697. believe

  698. in a

  699. lot of

  700. ways.

  701. If you

  702. just go

  703. around the

  704. churches,

  705. listen to

  706. sermons,

  707. listen to

  708. what people

  709. look for

  710. in church,

  711. we really

  712. believe that

  713. we're born

  714. basically

  715. good,

  716. that we

  717. need God

  718. to help

  719. us a little

  720. bit and

  721. give us

  722. some moral

  723. guidance on

  724. how to

  725. live a good

  726. life,

  727. but we

  728. just need

  729. some

  730. encouragement.

  731. And that

  732. would be a

  733. heresy

  734. called

  735. Pelagianism

  736. because

  737. we believe

  738. that man

  739. is born

  740. basically

  741. good.

  742. Pelagianism.

  743. Man is

  744. not just

  745. born

  746. spiritually

  747. sick.

  748. Okay?

  749. If you're

  750. sick,

  751. you just

  752. need a

  753. doctor to

  754. give you

  755. some medical

  756. attention to

  757. make you

  758. better.

  759. That's what

  760. would be

  761. called

  762. semi-Pelagianism

  763. or Arminianism.

  764. You can

  765. cooperate.

  766. You just

  767. have to have

  768. somebody come

  769. and help

  770. you.

  771. Like you're

  772. sick,

  773. you're

  774. desperate for

  775. some help

  776. and all

  777. you need

  778. is someone

  779. to come

  780. and give

  781. you some

  782. attention.

  783. But we

  784. see that

  785. man is

  786. dead in

  787. his

  788. trespasses,

  789. born in

  790. sin and

  791. by nature

  792. spiritually

  793. dead.

  794. That word

  795. means corpse.

  796. So not

  797. just spiritually

  798. misguided,

  799. are spiritually

  800. sick,

  801. but we're

  802. spiritually

  803. dead.

  804. Meaning our

  805. souls are

  806. dead to

  807. all that

  808. God is and

  809. that we have

  810. no ability

  811. to do

  812. spiritual

  813. good.

  814. before God

  815. or to

  816. initiate

  817. a relationship

  818. with God.

  819. We're born

  820. dead in

  821. sin.

  822. It says

  823. this in our

  824. text.

  825. This is what

  826. he's trying

  827. to say.

  828. And he's

  829. setting it

  830. up for

  831. something else

  832. though.

  833. Not only

  834. are we

  835. dead in

  836. sin,

  837. let's see

  838. that our

  839. spiritual

  840. senses have

  841. been darkened

  842. by sin.

  843. Men are

  844. born blind

  845. in death

  846. to spiritual

  847. truth.

  848. That's what

  849. the Bible

  850. teaches.

  851. Verse 3,

  852. they live

  853. in the

  854. passions

  855. of our

  856. flesh,

  857. carrying out

  858. the desires

  859. of the

  860. body and

  861. the mind.

  862. Our minds

  863. are darkened

  864. by sin

  865. and our

  866. hearts

  867. corrupted

  868. by evil

  869. and fallen

  870. man cannot

  871. even begin

  872. to initiate

  873. to initiate

  874. something good

  875. with God.

  876. Paul wrote

  877. later on

  878. in the same

  879. letter,

  880. just turn

  881. up a couple

  882. chapters to

  883. chapter 4

  884. in Ephesians,

  885. but verse

  886. 17,

  887. chapter 4,

  888. he says,

  889. Now this I

  890. say in

  891. testifying

  892. the Lord,

  893. that you

  894. must no

  895. longer walk

  896. as the

  897. Gentiles do

  898. in the

  899. futility

  900. of their

  901. minds.

  902. They are

  903. darkened

  904. in their

  905. understanding,

  906. alienated

  907. from the

  908. life of

  909. God

  910. because of

  911. the ignorance

  912. that is in

  913. them due

  914. to the

  915. hardness

  916. of heart,

  917. their

  918. hardness

  919. of heart.

  920. They have

  921. become

  922. callous

  923. and have

  924. even given

  925. themselves

  926. up to

  927. sensuality,

  928. greedy to

  929. practice every

  930. kind of

  931. impurity.

  932. So look at

  933. those terms,

  934. darkened

  935. in understanding,

  936. alienated

  937. from God,

  938. ignorant,

  939. hardness

  940. of heart,

  941. callous.

  942. That is a

  943. description of

  944. who we are

  945. before Christ.

  946. It's

  947. terrifying.

  948. Not only

  949. this,

  950. if we keep

  951. reading back

  952. in our text

  953. in Ephesians

  954. 2, it says

  955. that we

  956. followed the

  957. prince of

  958. the power

  959. of the

  960. air.

  961. That's

  962. Satan,

  963. the devil.

  964. This is

  965. terrifying.

  966. Before we

  967. are in

  968. Christ,

  969. scripture

  970. says that

  971. we are

  972. children of

  973. the devil,

  974. under his

  975. control,

  976. enslaved to

  977. sin.

  978. Alright?

  979. If you don't

  980. agree with that,

  981. just listen to

  982. this.

  983. Jesus was

  984. talking in

  985. John 8

  986. with a large

  987. group of

  988. people who

  989. refused to

  990. believe that

  991. he was the

  992. son of

  993. God.

  994. And this

  995. is what he

  996. said to

  997. them.

  998. This is

  999. not real

  1000. seeker friendly

  1001. at all.

  1002. He says,

  1003. you are of

  1004. your father,

  1005. the devil,

  1006. and you

  1007. want to

  1008. do the

  1009. will of

  1010. your father.

  1011. That's

  1012. scary.

  1013. Paul later

  1014. on prayed

  1015. that unbelievers

  1016. would escape

  1017. the snare

  1018. of the devil

  1019. after being

  1020. captured by

  1021. him to

  1022. do his

  1023. will.

  1024. 2 Timothy

  1025. 2.26

  1026. God.

  1027. So not

  1028. all belong

  1029. to God,

  1030. and that's

  1031. a frightening

  1032. thought.

  1033. It says

  1034. that we

  1035. are sons

  1036. of

  1037. disobedience

  1038. and our

  1039. end is

  1040. wrath.

  1041. That's what

  1042. we read

  1043. right here

  1044. in our

  1045. text.

  1046. By

  1047. nature,

  1048. we are

  1049. children

  1050. of

  1051. wrath

  1052. like the

  1053. rest

  1054. of

  1055. mankind.

  1056. So,

  1057. left in

  1058. our fallen

  1059. original

  1060. state,

  1061. we are

  1062. only objects

  1063. of God's

  1064. wrath

  1065. and

  1066. condemnation.

  1067. So,

  1068. not just

  1069. sick,

  1070. not just

  1071. misguided,

  1072. but desperately,

  1073. desperately

  1074. fallen.

  1075. We are

  1076. dead in

  1077. our

  1078. trespasses.

  1079. So,

  1080. why is this

  1081. so important,

  1082. right?

  1083. Well,

  1084. you will

  1085. minimize

  1086. the grace

  1087. of God

  1088. if you

  1089. hold too

  1090. high a

  1091. view of

  1092. yourself.

  1093. In the

  1094. Roman church

  1095. at this

  1096. time,

  1097. they had

  1098. pragmatic

  1099. theologians

  1100. and they

  1101. taught,

  1102. at least

  1103. in this

  1104. time,

  1105. right,

  1106. they judged

  1107. a doctrine

  1108. to be

  1109. true or

  1110. not,

  1111. if it

  1112. was useful

  1113. for

  1114. contemporary

  1115. life,

  1116. and if

  1117. it wasn't

  1118. hard to

  1119. grasp.

  1120. So,

  1121. Erasmus,

  1122. who was

  1123. one of

  1124. Luther's

  1125. opponents

  1126. later on,

  1127. Roman

  1128. Catholic

  1129. theologian,

  1130. Desiderius

  1131. Erasmus,

  1132. he basically

  1133. said,

  1134. look,

  1135. Luther,

  1136. even if

  1137. Scripture

  1138. does teach

  1139. that man

  1140. is so

  1141. fallen,

  1142. so

  1143. depraved,

  1144. so

  1145. helpless,

  1146. we

  1147. shouldn't

  1148. teach the

  1149. people

  1150. that,

  1151. because if

  1152. we do,

  1153. they're just

  1154. going to

  1155. despair,

  1156. and they're

  1157. not even

  1158. going to

  1159. want to

  1160. even try

  1161. to improve

  1162. their

  1163. condition.

  1164. That's

  1165. what they

  1166. taught.

  1167. Sound

  1168. familiar

  1169. today?

  1170. As where

  1171. the

  1172. reformers

  1173. and Luther

  1174. said,

  1175. no,

  1176. it's the

  1177. eternal

  1178. idea of

  1179. God's

  1180. truth that

  1181. matters,

  1182. not our

  1183. feelings,

  1184. or whether

  1185. or not

  1186. we think

  1187. something's

  1188. helpful or

  1189. not,

  1190. and you

  1191. will

  1192. diminish,

  1193. if you

  1194. diminish our

  1195. desperate

  1196. spiritual

  1197. condition,

  1198. you will

  1199. diminish the

  1200. glory of

  1201. God in

  1202. saving us.

  1203. That's what

  1204. they were

  1205. saying.

  1206. So it

  1207. doesn't matter

  1208. if it's

  1209. helpful in

  1210. our moment

  1211. or not,

  1212. in this

  1213. moment or

  1214. not.

  1215. So,

  1216. such a

  1217. desperate

  1218. spiritual

  1219. state leaves

  1220. us at

  1221. God's

  1222. mercy.

  1223. And it

  1224. goes to

  1225. question

  1226. number

  1227. two.

  1228. Go back

  1229. to Ephesians

  1230. two.

  1231. You see

  1232. this in

  1233. verses five

  1234. and six.

  1235. Okay,

  1236. the question

  1237. is,

  1238. how did

  1239. God provide

  1240. his grace

  1241. for us?

  1242. Verses

  1243. five and

  1244. six.

  1245. And we

  1246. see

  1247. beautifully

  1248. that he

  1249. did it

  1250. in Christ

  1251. by sending

  1252. his son.

  1253. this saving

  1254. grace that

  1255. we know,

  1256. this unmerited

  1257. favor of

  1258. the Father

  1259. came at

  1260. a great

  1261. cost.

  1262. It

  1263. was costly

  1264. grace because

  1265. it cost the

  1266. precious blood

  1267. of Christ,

  1268. the only

  1269. blood of

  1270. the Father.

  1271. Ephesians

  1272. one,

  1273. verse seven,

  1274. it says,

  1275. in him,

  1276. in Christ,

  1277. we have

  1278. redemption

  1279. through his

  1280. blood,

  1281. the forgiveness

  1282. of our

  1283. trespasses

  1284. according to

  1285. the riches

  1286. of his

  1287. grace,

  1288. which he

  1289. lavished on

  1290. us.

  1291. So,

  1292. we don't

  1293. have really

  1294. many places

  1295. to turn this

  1296. morning other

  1297. than Ephesians

  1298. two,

  1299. but my

  1300. classic text,

  1301. go to

  1302. Romans five,

  1303. Romans five

  1304. really quick.

  1305. I just

  1306. want you to

  1307. see this.

  1308. Romans five

  1309. and go to

  1310. verse six.

  1311. God

  1312. provided his

  1313. grace for

  1314. us and

  1315. he sent

  1316. Christ to

  1317. come and

  1318. die on

  1319. our behalf.

  1320. provided in

  1321. the Savior.

  1322. Okay.

  1323. Romans five

  1324. verse six.

  1325. For while

  1326. we were

  1327. still weak,

  1328. at the

  1329. right time

  1330. Christ died

  1331. for the

  1332. ungodly.

  1333. Okay,

  1334. now,

  1335. pause.

  1336. So,

  1337. God doesn't

  1338. help those

  1339. who help

  1340. themselves.

  1341. It says

  1342. that we

  1343. are weak

  1344. and helpless.

  1345. We cannot

  1346. help

  1347. ourselves.

  1348. Right?

  1349. We're not

  1350. in any

  1351. position.

  1352. At the

  1353. right time

  1354. Christ died

  1355. for the

  1356. ungodly.

  1357. For one

  1358. will scarcely

  1359. die for

  1360. a righteous

  1361. person,

  1362. though perhaps

  1363. for a good

  1364. person one

  1365. would even

  1366. dare to

  1367. die.

  1368. Listen to

  1369. this.

  1370. But God

  1371. chose his

  1372. love for

  1373. us and

  1374. that while

  1375. we were

  1376. still

  1377. sinners,

  1378. Christ

  1379. died for

  1380. us.

  1381. Since

  1382. therefore we

  1383. now have

  1384. been justified

  1385. by his

  1386. blood,

  1387. much more

  1388. shall I be

  1389. saved by

  1390. him from

  1391. the wrath

  1392. of God.

  1393. For if

  1394. we were

  1395. enemies,

  1396. we were

  1397. reconciled

  1398. to God

  1399. by the

  1400. death

  1401. of his

  1402. son.

  1403. Much

  1404. more,

  1405. now that

  1406. we are

  1407. reconciled,

  1408. shall we

  1409. be saved

  1410. by his

  1411. life.

  1412. So good.

  1413. Chew on

  1414. those verses

  1415. today when

  1416. you go

  1417. home.

  1418. But you

  1419. see these

  1420. phrases that

  1421. are used

  1422. of a lost

  1423. person?

  1424. Without

  1425. Christ,

  1426. they are

  1427. ungodly,

  1428. they are

  1429. weak,

  1430. they are

  1431. enemies,

  1432. they are

  1433. sinners,

  1434. and they are

  1435. separated.

  1436. That is

  1437. all scary

  1438. news,

  1439. right?

  1440. But we

  1441. see that

  1442. Christ died

  1443. for us,

  1444. reconciled us

  1445. to God,

  1446. and made

  1447. us right

  1448. with God.

  1449. Beautiful

  1450. picture.

  1451. Okay?

  1452. So,

  1453. this is a

  1454. picture of

  1455. the work,

  1456. how God

  1457. provided his

  1458. grace for

  1459. us,

  1460. that he

  1461. sent Christ

  1462. to die

  1463. for us.

  1464. So listen

  1465. to this,

  1466. if you can,

  1467. just pull

  1468. in,

  1469. take this

  1470. in.

  1471. again,

  1472. it's in

  1473. God's

  1474. nature

  1475. to be

  1476. gracious.

  1477. So God

  1478. is not

  1479. gracious

  1480. to us

  1481. because

  1482. Jesus

  1483. died for

  1484. us.

  1485. Jesus

  1486. died for

  1487. us because

  1488. God is

  1489. gracious to

  1490. us.

  1491. You

  1492. follow that?

  1493. God is

  1494. not gracious

  1495. to us

  1496. because Christ

  1497. died for

  1498. us,

  1499. but Christ

  1500. died for

  1501. us because

  1502. God is

  1503. gracious.

  1504. gracious.

  1505. So it

  1506. is the

  1507. grace of

  1508. the Father

  1509. who initiated

  1510. with us

  1511. and that

  1512. Jesus came

  1513. and died

  1514. in our

  1515. place.

  1516. He is

  1517. how we

  1518. have the

  1519. grace of

  1520. God.

  1521. So in a

  1522. sense,

  1523. the reformers

  1524. were saying

  1525. that grace

  1526. isn't some

  1527. thing that

  1528. God just

  1529. sort of

  1530. throws out

  1531. to us.

  1532. He sent

  1533. us Christ

  1534. and in

  1535. Christ is

  1536. all the

  1537. grace we

  1538. need.

  1539. In

  1540. Christ,

  1541. not outside

  1542. of Christ.

  1543. So,

  1544. they were

  1545. saying we

  1546. can distort

  1547. the character

  1548. of the

  1549. Father.

  1550. He is

  1551. just,

  1552. he is

  1553. righteous,

  1554. but he

  1555. is also

  1556. gracious

  1557. and loving.

  1558. Right?

  1559. And that's

  1560. how we see

  1561. in Romans,

  1562. right,

  1563. that God

  1564. remained

  1565. just by

  1566. punishing

  1567. Christ,

  1568. but in

  1569. through that

  1570. he became

  1571. the justifier

  1572. of the

  1573. one who

  1574. had faith

  1575. in Christ.

  1576. Brings us

  1577. to our

  1578. third

  1579. question.

  1580. What is

  1581. the means

  1582. of receiving

  1583. God's

  1584. grace?

  1585. Alright,

  1586. look at

  1587. verses 8

  1588. and 9.

  1589. For by

  1590. grace you

  1591. have been

  1592. saved

  1593. through

  1594. faith,

  1595. and this

  1596. is not

  1597. your own

  1598. doing,

  1599. it is

  1600. the gift

  1601. of God,

  1602. not of

  1603. the result

  1604. of works,

  1605. so that

  1606. no one

  1607. may boast.

  1608. So,

  1609. as fallen

  1610. human beings,

  1611. we all

  1612. have a

  1613. tendency,

  1614. every one

  1615. of you,

  1616. and me,

  1617. we have a

  1618. tendency to

  1619. want to seek

  1620. to earn

  1621. God's favor.

  1622. behavior.

  1623. This is

  1624. how the

  1625. world operates

  1626. around us,

  1627. every day,

  1628. right?

  1629. Kids try to

  1630. be on good

  1631. behavior to

  1632. earn their

  1633. parents'

  1634. favor.

  1635. Students

  1636. work really

  1637. hard to

  1638. make good

  1639. grazing class.

  1640. You work

  1641. really hard

  1642. to make a

  1643. sports team

  1644. and perform

  1645. well at work

  1646. to hopefully

  1647. get a

  1648. promotion.

  1649. Our whole

  1650. life is

  1651. saturated with

  1652. performance-based

  1653. acceptance.

  1654. acceptance.

  1655. So,

  1656. very easily

  1657. that drips

  1658. into our

  1659. relationship

  1660. with God.

  1661. So,

  1662. if you

  1663. struggle with

  1664. that,

  1665. just know

  1666. that's

  1667. affecting,

  1668. you know,

  1669. your

  1670. understanding

  1671. of the

  1672. nature of

  1673. God,

  1674. right?

  1675. And it's

  1676. something that

  1677. the other

  1678. religions and

  1679. cults of the

  1680. world have

  1681. picked up on.

  1682. You know,

  1683. work your

  1684. way,

  1685. earn your

  1686. way to

  1687. God,

  1688. appease

  1689. Him some

  1690. way,

  1691. and that's

  1692. not how it

  1693. is.

  1694. The reality

  1695. is that God's

  1696. salvation is by

  1697. grace alone.

  1698. And that's a

  1699. message that the

  1700. whole world needs

  1701. to hear.

  1702. So,

  1703. God doesn't even

  1704. want you to

  1705. contribute 1%

  1706. of your

  1707. salvation so

  1708. that you have

  1709. no grounds

  1710. to boast,

  1711. right?

  1712. So,

  1713. imagine if

  1714. someone committed

  1715. the most

  1716. atrocious crime

  1717. to you,

  1718. towards you,

  1719. and then they

  1720. tried to make

  1721. amends by giving

  1722. you just a little

  1723. bit of money

  1724. for it.

  1725. You know,

  1726. that makes no

  1727. sense at all.

  1728. And that's how

  1729. we kind of act

  1730. with God,

  1731. that,

  1732. you know,

  1733. we can

  1734. disapace His

  1735. justice if we

  1736. just do a

  1737. few,

  1738. quote,

  1739. good things.

  1740. And that's

  1741. not how His

  1742. justice works.

  1743. Remember,

  1744. God's grace

  1745. means that His

  1746. unmerited favor

  1747. and goodness

  1748. towards those

  1749. who deserve

  1750. only punishment.

  1751. None of us

  1752. deserve it.

  1753. Again,

  1754. otherwise,

  1755. grace would

  1756. not be

  1757. grace.

  1758. And He is

  1759. not under

  1760. obligation to

  1761. show us

  1762. grace.

  1763. You should

  1764. hear that.

  1765. God is not

  1766. obligated to

  1767. show us

  1768. grace.

  1769. Exodus 33,

  1770. 19,

  1771. also quoted

  1772. in Romans

  1773. 9,

  1774. Lord,

  1775. the Lord

  1776. said,

  1777. I will be

  1778. gracious to

  1779. whom I

  1780. will be

  1781. gracious,

  1782. and I

  1783. will show

  1784. mercy on

  1785. whom I

  1786. will show

  1787. mercy.

  1788. Yet,

  1789. astonishingly,

  1790. astonishingly,

  1791. shockingly,

  1792. God did

  1793. choose to

  1794. show us

  1795. His grace.

  1796. And it

  1797. was a

  1798. gift,

  1799. a gift

  1800. of God

  1801. that we

  1802. read,

  1803. right?

  1804. That means

  1805. like the

  1806. faith,

  1807. the faith

  1808. itself is

  1809. a gift

  1810. of God

  1811. towards you.

  1812. So,

  1813. one commentator

  1814. I read,

  1815. he said,

  1816. faith is

  1817. simply breathing

  1818. the breath

  1819. that God's

  1820. grace provides.

  1821. Faith is

  1822. breathing the

  1823. breath that

  1824. God's grace

  1825. provides.

  1826. So we

  1827. cannot be

  1828. good enough,

  1829. we cannot

  1830. do enough

  1831. good works

  1832. to make

  1833. ourselves

  1834. right with

  1835. God.

  1836. we cannot.

  1837. So,

  1838. the only

  1839. way to

  1840. receive it

  1841. again is

  1842. by faith.

  1843. And God's

  1844. grace provides

  1845. this.

  1846. Question

  1847. number four.

  1848. Thanks for

  1849. bearing with

  1850. me,

  1851. I'm

  1852. struggling

  1853. right now.

  1854. Question

  1855. number four.

  1856. Why,

  1857. this is

  1858. important,

  1859. why did

  1860. God choose

  1861. to show

  1862. us His

  1863. grace?

  1864. Why?

  1865. See this

  1866. in verses

  1867. four and

  1868. seven.

  1869. God being

  1870. rich in

  1871. mercy

  1872. because of

  1873. the great

  1874. love which

  1875. He loved

  1876. us.

  1877. And in

  1878. verse seven,

  1879. so that in

  1880. the coming

  1881. age He

  1882. might show

  1883. the immeasurable

  1884. riches of

  1885. His grace

  1886. and kindness

  1887. towards us

  1888. in Christ

  1889. Jesus.

  1890. So,

  1891. it could

  1892. be said

  1893. that the

  1894. first two

  1895. words of

  1896. that are

  1897. so beautiful,

  1898. but God,

  1899. right?

  1900. though we

  1901. were helplessly

  1902. lost,

  1903. enslaved to

  1904. sin,

  1905. children of

  1906. the devil,

  1907. held captive

  1908. to do

  1909. His will,

  1910. hearts darkened

  1911. by sin,

  1912. minds

  1913. corrupted by

  1914. evil,

  1915. though we

  1916. had done

  1917. nothing but

  1918. rebel against

  1919. Him,

  1920. but God.

  1921. So,

  1922. why did

  1923. God choose

  1924. us to

  1925. show us

  1926. His grace?

  1927. Not because

  1928. we were

  1929. worthy,

  1930. not because

  1931. we cleaned

  1932. ourselves up

  1933. enough to

  1934. make ourselves

  1935. acceptable to

  1936. God,

  1937. not because

  1938. we earned

  1939. His favor,

  1940. we earned

  1941. only death,

  1942. Romans 6,

  1943. the wages of

  1944. sin is death,

  1945. right?

  1946. only because

  1947. of the

  1948. riches of

  1949. His mercy

  1950. and grace.

  1951. So,

  1952. this word,

  1953. this word

  1954. rich right

  1955. here that

  1956. you see,

  1957. it means

  1958. overabounding

  1959. without measure

  1960. in mercy

  1961. towards us.

  1962. So,

  1963. that is

  1964. God's mercy,

  1965. His pardoning,

  1966. His forgiving.

  1967. So,

  1968. then we read

  1969. because of

  1970. the great

  1971. love with

  1972. which He

  1973. loved us,

  1974. agape,

  1975. my favorite,

  1976. one of my

  1977. favorite words,

  1978. agape,

  1979. the highest

  1980. form of

  1981. love and

  1982. existence.

  1983. So,

  1984. it's not like,

  1985. I think most

  1986. of us can't

  1987. get our heads

  1988. around this.

  1989. I think we

  1990. minimize like

  1991. how great

  1992. this idea

  1993. of love is.

  1994. It's not

  1995. brotherly love.

  1996. It's not even

  1997. like the affection

  1998. that a marital

  1999. couple has

  2000. with each other.

  2001. It's higher

  2002. than that.

  2003. God in His

  2004. nature is by

  2005. definition,

  2006. love.

  2007. His love is

  2008. infinitely greater

  2009. than any human

  2010. love can express.

  2011. And,

  2012. this word,

  2013. in Greek

  2014. speaking culture,

  2015. back then,

  2016. it hardly ever

  2017. pops up.

  2018. It was never

  2019. really used a lot

  2020. because they

  2021. didn't really have

  2022. a right context

  2023. for it.

  2024. But the New

  2025. Testament,

  2026. it occurs

  2027. 320 times,

  2028. speaking about

  2029. God's

  2030. self-sacrificing,

  2031. unconditional

  2032. love.

  2033. love.

  2034. So,

  2035. it's a love

  2036. not of human

  2037. origin.

  2038. Right?

  2039. Humans don't

  2040. have this kind

  2041. of love.

  2042. We don't

  2043. die for our

  2044. enemies.

  2045. Right?

  2046. This is only

  2047. the God type

  2048. love that

  2049. Christ died

  2050. for us

  2051. while we were

  2052. His enemies,

  2053. while we were

  2054. still sinners.

  2055. So,

  2056. listen to this.

  2057. You must have

  2058. a high view

  2059. of sin

  2060. and depravity

  2061. because if

  2062. you do,

  2063. it will

  2064. help you

  2065. magnify

  2066. the love

  2067. of God

  2068. much more

  2069. than those

  2070. who have

  2071. a low view

  2072. of sin.

  2073. If you

  2074. think that

  2075. you're actually

  2076. worthy of

  2077. God's love,

  2078. then God's

  2079. love is

  2080. puny.

  2081. But God's

  2082. love is

  2083. magnified

  2084. because He

  2085. chose to

  2086. love that

  2087. which was

  2088. unlovable.

  2089. Us.

  2090. Right?

  2091. It's so much

  2092. more beautiful,

  2093. so much more

  2094. glorious when

  2095. we see that

  2096. He just simply

  2097. chose to

  2098. love us,

  2099. not because

  2100. we deserve

  2101. it.

  2102. Right?

  2103. It says that

  2104. in 1 John

  2105. does it not?

  2106. We love

  2107. why?

  2108. Because He

  2109. first loved

  2110. us.

  2111. Right?

  2112. So that He

  2113. might show

  2114. the immeasurable

  2115. riches of

  2116. His grace.

  2117. Each one of

  2118. you who are

  2119. in Christ,

  2120. you're a

  2121. trophy of

  2122. God's grace.

  2123. I like to

  2124. deer hunt.

  2125. I've only

  2126. killed a couple

  2127. of big bucks.

  2128. I only mounted

  2129. one of them,

  2130. and that's my

  2131. trophy.

  2132. I don't even

  2133. have it in my

  2134. house,

  2135. in my parents'

  2136. house.

  2137. My brother

  2138. is a deer

  2139. slayer,

  2140. though.

  2141. He has

  2142. like,

  2143. deers all

  2144. over the

  2145. wall,

  2146. massive

  2147. deers.

  2148. And,

  2149. not a

  2150. direct

  2151. connection,

  2152. but each

  2153. one of us

  2154. who are in

  2155. Christ,

  2156. we are a

  2157. trophy of

  2158. God's grace.

  2159. We are a

  2160. trophy of

  2161. God's goodness.

  2162. Why,

  2163. each one of

  2164. us have

  2165. been changed

  2166. and redeemed

  2167. by Christ.

  2168. We are a

  2169. trophy of

  2170. grace,

  2171. each one of

  2172. us.

  2173. So,

  2174. this is the

  2175. last place I

  2176. want you to

  2177. look,

  2178. but just flip

  2179. over to

  2180. Ephesians 1.

  2181. I'm trying to

  2182. keep you in

  2183. Ephesians.

  2184. Ephesians 1,

    Ephesians 1:5

  2185. verse 5.

  2186. And we see

  2187. this, that God

  2188. did this to the

  2189. praise of His

  2190. glory.

  2191. Sola

  2192. Dei

  2193. Gloria.

  2194. says,

  2195. in love,

  2196. He predestined

  2197. us for

  2198. adoption as

  2199. sons through

  2200. Jesus Christ,

  2201. according to

  2202. the purpose

  2203. of His

  2204. will,

  2205. listen to this,

  2206. to the praise

  2207. of His

  2208. glorious grace

  2209. with which He

  2210. has blessed us

  2211. in the

  2212. beloved.

  2213. In Him,

  2214. we have

  2215. redemption

  2216. through His

  2217. blood,

  2218. the forgiveness

  2219. of our

  2220. trespasses,

  2221. according to

  2222. the riches

  2223. of His

  2224. grace,

  2225. which He

  2226. lavished upon

  2227. us in all

  2228. wisdom and

  2229. insight,

  2230. making known

  2231. to us the

  2232. mystery of

  2233. His will,

  2234. according to

  2235. His purpose,

  2236. which He

  2237. set forth

  2238. in Christ,

  2239. as a plan

  2240. for the

  2241. fullness of

  2242. time to

  2243. unite all

  2244. things in

  2245. Him,

  2246. things in

  2247. heaven and

  2248. things on

  2249. earth.

  2250. So,

  2251. He did

  2252. this for

  2253. the praise

  2254. of His

  2255. glorious

  2256. grace.

  2257. That's

  2258. mind-blowing

  2259. to me.

  2260. But listen

  2261. to this,

  2262. if God's

  2263. glory is at

  2264. stake here,

  2265. that's

  2266. huge,

  2267. because it

  2268. means that

  2269. He won't

  2270. suffer His

  2271. glory to

  2272. be diminished.

  2273. Okay,

  2274. so that leads

  2275. us to the

  2276. fifth thing,

  2277. the last

  2278. question.

  2279. How should

  2280. we respond

  2281. to God's

  2282. grace?

  2283. How should

  2284. we respond

  2285. to God's

  2286. grace?

  2287. In a way,

  2288. in verse

  2289. 10,

  2290. back in

  2291. chapter 2,

  2292. it says that

  2293. we are His

  2294. workmanship,

  2295. created in

  2296. Christ Jesus

  2297. for good

  2298. works,

  2299. which He

  2300. prepared

  2301. beforehand

  2302. that we

  2303. should walk

  2304. in them.

  2305. So,

  2306. I think

  2307. each one of

  2308. us would

  2309. find ourselves

  2310. in one

  2311. of these

  2312. two

  2313. positions,

  2314. naturally

  2315. speaking.

  2316. We would

  2317. find that

  2318. our natural

  2319. tendency is

  2320. either to

  2321. drift away

  2322. from God's

  2323. grace with

  2324. either legalism

  2325. or licentiousness.

  2326. We either

  2327. de-appreciate

  2328. God's grace.

  2329. this is

  2330. sad.

  2331. So,

  2332. let's just

  2333. unpack this.

  2334. These are

  2335. two wrong

  2336. responses

  2337. to God's

  2338. grace that

  2339. each one of

  2340. us will

  2341. find ourselves

  2342. in at

  2343. some point.

  2344. The first

  2345. one is

  2346. the cheap

  2347. grace

  2348. mentality.

  2349. We look at

  2350. God's grace

  2351. and we treat

  2352. it like it

  2353. wasn't costly,

  2354. like it's

  2355. not valuable.

  2356. Many of

  2357. you may

  2358. have found

  2359. yourself in

  2360. this position.

  2361. This was

  2362. the story of

  2363. my life.

  2364. If you

  2365. ever heard

  2366. me tell

  2367. you my

  2368. story,

  2369. it would

  2370. be filled

  2371. with this

  2372. kind of

  2373. stuff.

  2374. Or we

  2375. say,

  2376. grace,

  2377. that's

  2378. awesome.

  2379. Boy,

  2380. I'm glad

  2381. I'm

  2382. saved,

  2383. so no

  2384. matter

  2385. what I

  2386. do now,

  2387. I'm

  2388. okay with

  2389. God.

  2390. I've

  2391. got my

  2392. get out

  2393. of hell

  2394. free ticket

  2395. because of

  2396. God's

  2397. grace and

  2398. now I

  2399. can send

  2400. all I

  2401. want to.

  2402. I

  2403. thought

  2404. that way

  2405. for years.

  2406. So,

  2407. as long

  2408. as I

  2409. go to

  2410. church on

  2411. Sunday and

  2412. Wednesday

  2413. and try

  2414. to go

  2415. do the

  2416. thing,

  2417. get baptized,

  2418. join the

  2419. church,

  2420. I'm

  2421. okay.

  2422. Yet,

  2423. if that's

  2424. you this

  2425. morning,

  2426. know that

  2427. Scripture

  2428. says that a

  2429. lot of people

  2430. are deceived

  2431. into thinking

  2432. they belong

  2433. to Christ

  2434. and they

  2435. are not.

  2436. 2 Corinthians

  2437. 13.5,

  2438. a verse I

  2439. had never

  2440. read until

  2441. about ten

  2442. years ago

  2443. when I

  2444. became a

  2445. believer.

  2446. It says,

  2447. examine

  2448. yourselves to

  2449. see whether

  2450. or not you

  2451. are in the

  2452. faith.

  2453. Test

  2454. yourselves.

  2455. Well, I

  2456. was told not

  2457. to doubt

  2458. myself, so I'm

  2459. not going to

  2460. listen to

  2461. that.

  2462. I pray my

  2463. prayers, I'm

  2464. good.

  2465. No, he

  2466. says test

  2467. yourself to

  2468. see if you

  2469. are in

  2470. the faith.

  2471. And I

  2472. had no

  2473. love of

  2474. God.

  2475. If you

  2476. had watched

  2477. my life, I

  2478. had no fear

  2479. of God.

  2480. And that's

  2481. the tragedy

  2482. of the Bible

  2483. belt in a

  2484. lot of ways,

  2485. that we are

  2486. so accustomed

  2487. to the good

  2488. news that it's

  2489. really just

  2490. dull and old

  2491. news to us.

  2492. And so, if you

  2493. find yourself

  2494. there, if you

  2495. can walk up

  2496. to Jesus,

  2497. hang on the

  2498. cross, and

  2499. say to Him,

  2500. I know that

  2501. you're suffering

  2502. now from my

  2503. sin, and

  2504. that you're

  2505. dying wish is

  2506. that I go

  2507. and sin no

  2508. more, but

  2509. there's just

  2510. one need I

  2511. have that

  2512. can only be

  2513. fulfilled by

  2514. sinning.

  2515. So I hope

  2516. you understand

  2517. as I thrust

  2518. this sword

  2519. into your

  2520. side.

  2521. So now I'm

  2522. glad that

  2523. your blood

  2524. forgives me

  2525. because I'm

  2526. doing this.

  2527. Those who

  2528. are born of

  2529. God cannot

  2530. think that

  2531. way.

  2532. Cannot

  2533. think that

  2534. way.

  2535. If you see

  2536. God's grace

  2537. as a license

  2538. to sin,

  2539. hear this,

  2540. Paul says

  2541. in Romans

  2542. 6,

  2543. what shall

  2544. we say

  2545. then?

  2546. Will we

  2547. continue that

  2548. grace may

  2549. abound?

  2550. By no

  2551. means.

  2552. How can

  2553. we who

  2554. died to

  2555. sin still

  2556. live in

  2557. it?

  2558. Your sin

  2559. killed Christ,

  2560. right?

  2561. We can't be

  2562. friends with it

  2563. any longer.

  2564. And if that's

  2565. how you think,

  2566. just advance

  2567. at your own

  2568. peril.

  2569. You're getting

  2570. a warning

  2571. this morning.

  2572. Stop and

  2573. look at your

  2574. life.

  2575. That is not

  2576. the right way

  2577. to respond

  2578. to the

  2579. grace of

  2580. God.

  2581. Paul actually

  2582. says later

  2583. on,

  2584. Romans 3,

  2585. 8,

  2586. if you

  2587. think this

  2588. way,

  2589. let us

  2590. sin that

  2591. good may

  2592. come,

  2593. he says,

  2594. as some

  2595. slanderously

  2596. charge us,

  2597. he says,

  2598. your condemnation

  2599. is just,

  2600. if we think

  2601. this way.

  2602. So,

  2603. that's the

  2604. first wrong

  2605. response.

  2606. To treat

  2607. the precious

  2608. blood of

  2609. Christ is

  2610. cheap.

  2611. the second

  2612. wrong response,

  2613. which is just

  2614. as bad,

  2615. is legalism.

  2616. There's so

  2617. much talk

  2618. about legalism.

  2619. I think most

  2620. people can't

  2621. even really

  2622. properly define

  2623. it.

  2624. But in our

  2625. case,

  2626. we're going

  2627. to say that

  2628. it's an attempt

  2629. to basically

  2630. improve upon

  2631. the grace

  2632. of God.

  2633. Like,

  2634. I like God's

  2635. grace,

  2636. but I want

  2637. to make sure

  2638. that I still

  2639. add a little

  2640. bit of my

  2641. own goodness

  2642. into it,

  2643. just in

  2644. case.

  2645. I want

  2646. to have

  2647. Christ plus

  2648. some good

  2649. things to

  2650. my account.

  2651. And that

  2652. is making

  2653. a mockery

  2654. of the

  2655. sacrifice of

  2656. Christ.

  2657. It's a slap

  2658. in the face

  2659. of God

  2660. to say

  2661. that the

  2662. blood of

  2663. His Son

  2664. was not

  2665. enough.

  2666. Alright?

  2667. You cannot

  2668. add or

  2669. try to improve

  2670. the grace

  2671. of God.

  2672. Christ's

  2673. death was

  2674. sufficient.

  2675. Okay?

  2676. So,

  2677. I'm going

  2678. to try to

  2679. spend the

  2680. rest of

  2681. this time

  2682. on our

  2683. right

  2684. response.

  2685. Alright?

  2686. So,

  2687. here's a

  2688. few things,

  2689. I think,

  2690. four things

  2691. that can

  2692. kind of,

  2693. what's the

  2694. right response

  2695. to the

  2696. grace of

  2697. God?

  2698. For one,

  2699. is

  2700. obedience.

  2701. Listen to

  2702. this.

  2703. Saving grace

  2704. not only

  2705. sets us

  2706. free from

  2707. spiritual

  2708. bondage,

  2709. but at the

  2710. same,

  2711. saving grace

  2712. also transforms

  2713. our lives

  2714. into joyful

  2715. obedience.

  2716. obedience.

  2717. Alright?

  2718. Saving grace

  2719. not only

  2720. sets us

  2721. free from

  2722. spiritual

  2723. bondage,

  2724. but it

  2725. transforms

  2726. our lives

  2727. into joyful

  2728. obedience.

  2729. Good works

  2730. don't earn

  2731. God's grace

  2732. for us,

  2733. but the

  2734. church has

  2735. taught for a

  2736. long time,

  2737. the Protestant

  2738. evangelical

  2739. church,

  2740. the good works

  2741. aren't the

  2742. means of

  2743. salvation,

  2744. but they're

  2745. the fruit of

  2746. salvation,

  2747. the evidence

  2748. of salvation.

  2749. we want

  2750. to serve

  2751. God.

  2752. Our hearts

  2753. are changed.

  2754. So that is

  2755. the outflow,

  2756. is a desire

  2757. to want to

  2758. follow God.

  2759. There's a

  2760. change in

  2761. your heart.

  2762. I want

  2763. to do

  2764. what he

  2765. says,

  2766. not that I

  2767. have to

  2768. or whatever,

  2769. it's a

  2770. desire

  2771. change.

  2772. Joyful

  2773. obedience,

  2774. not legal

  2775. obedience.

  2776. Another

  2777. thing that

  2778. it accomplishes

  2779. is humility.

  2780. humility.

  2781. So humility

  2782. in this case

  2783. isn't just

  2784. trying to

  2785. feel small

  2786. or feel

  2787. useless

  2788. or inferior,

  2789. but it's

  2790. this idea

  2791. that God

  2792. is so great,

  2793. so majestic,

  2794. so glorious

  2795. in his grace

  2796. and we see

  2797. ourselves in

  2798. light of that.

  2799. So we're

  2800. humbled by

  2801. the knowledge

  2802. that such a

  2803. holy,

  2804. righteous God

  2805. would show

  2806. us grace.

  2807. That should

  2808. make us

  2809. just feel

  2810. overwhelmed,

  2811. completely

  2812. humbled,

  2813. humbled at

  2814. that reality

  2815. that he

  2816. would show

  2817. such amazing

  2818. grace to

  2819. us in

  2820. Christ Jesus.

  2821. Like,

  2822. why?

  2823. Why?

  2824. Why?

  2825. Why me?

  2826. Why you?

  2827. Right?

  2828. No sense

  2829. of entitlement.

  2830. It's a

  2831. humbling

  2832. reality.

  2833. God's grace

  2834. humbles us.

  2835. And this

  2836. is a great

  2837. one.

  2838. Assurance.

  2839. Okay?

  2840. Another

  2841. response.

  2842. Assurance.

  2843. Because salvation

  2844. began as a

  2845. work of God's

  2846. grace,

  2847. it's also

  2848. going to be

  2849. brought to

  2850. completion by

  2851. God's grace.

  2852. God's,

  2853. the same

  2854. sovereign grace

  2855. that saved us

  2856. is the grace

  2857. that leads us

  2858. home.

  2859. Right?

  2860. That's what

  2861. Newton said.

  2862. It was grace

  2863. that taught my

  2864. heart to fear,

  2865. in grace my

  2866. fears relieved.

  2867. How precious

  2868. did the grace

  2869. appear the hour

  2870. I first

  2871. believed.

  2872. Christ.

  2873. So,

  2874. he will

  2875. finish it.

  2876. Paul says,

  2877. I am confident

  2878. that he who

  2879. began the

  2880. good work in

  2881. you will

  2882. bring it to

  2883. completion at

  2884. the day of

  2885. Christ Jesus.

  2886. Humans are

  2887. notorious for

  2888. starting projects

  2889. they can't

  2890. finish.

  2891. I'm the best

  2892. example.

  2893. And it's

  2894. usually either

  2895. a lack of

  2896. resources or

  2897. lack of

  2898. desire to

  2899. finish a

  2900. project,

  2901. lack of

  2902. time,

  2903. whatever.

  2904. God lacks

  2905. none of those

  2906. things to

  2907. finish what

  2908. he starts.

  2909. He always

  2910. finishes what

  2911. he starts.

  2912. And so,

  2913. take comfort

  2914. in that

  2915. reality that

  2916. grace started

  2917. this and

  2918. grace is

  2919. going to

  2920. finish it.

  2921. And then

  2922. lastly,

  2923. worship.

  2924. As we find

  2925. our minds

  2926. expanded by

  2927. the grace

  2928. of God,

  2929. our hearts

  2930. should

  2931. correspondingly

  2932. be enlarged

  2933. for love

  2934. for him,

  2935. for what

  2936. Christ has

  2937. done.

  2938. So,

  2939. we should

  2940. fall at

  2941. Christ's

  2942. feet and

  2943. worship because

  2944. of the

  2945. greatness of

  2946. this grace.

  2947. 2 Corinthians

  2948. 9,

  2949. listen to

  2950. this,

  2951. he just

  2952. says,

  2953. because of

  2954. the surpassing

  2955. grace of

  2956. God that

  2957. is upon

  2958. us,

  2959. thanks be

  2960. to God

  2961. for his

  2962. inexpressible

  2963. gift.

  2964. Grace is

  2965. an inexpressible

  2966. gift of

  2967. God.

  2968. And I

  2969. hope that

  2970. you're taking

  2971. comfort in

  2972. these realities

  2973. that salvation

  2974. and our

  2975. acceptance,

  2976. our standing

  2977. with God

  2978. is solely

  2979. based on

  2980. his grace,

  2981. his unmerited

  2982. goodness

  2983. and favor

  2984. towards us

  2985. who don't

  2986. deserve it

  2987. at all.

  2988. Join me

  2989. in prayer.
