  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word, which I pray is with you.

  2. It's well read and treasured in your hearts.

  3. And turn to the book of Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  4. On the 31st of this month, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 theses being nailed to the door of the Wittenberg Church.

  5. An event which ignited a flame of doctrinal purification in Europe.

  6. Much of the Reformers' teaching has been summed up systematically in what are known as the Solas, which we are considering one at a time leading up to the Sunday before the 31st.

  7. So far we have considered a Sola Scriptura, and that is that God's Scripture, the Bible, the 66 books that we have canonized in our Protestant Bible,

  8. are the final authority of God on earth.

  9. We considered last week, Sola Gratia, by grace alone.

  10. Salvation is a gift of God.

  11. Today we're going to consider Sola Fide, or faith alone.

  12. That is to say that we are justified through faith alone.

  13. And in the coming two weeks, Solus Christus, in Christ alone, or justified by faith alone, in Christ alone.

  14. And finally, Soli Deo Gloria.

  15. That is, all is to the glory of God alone.

  16. Now the Reformers were speaking to audiences that considered themselves Christian.

  17. It was a very Christianized culture.

  18. There was not opposition in Luther's day to Scripture, or grace, or faith, or Christ, or the glory of God.

  19. But there was much addition and subtraction from these key doctrines.

  20. And that is why the Reformers loved the word alone or only.

  21. And we find in our day much error as well.

  22. And it's why we should also look to the past and to our Bibles to see that the Bible alone is authority of God.

  23. Final authority.

  24. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  25. And this is all to the glory of God alone.

  26. So as we consider today, Sola Fide, faith alone, let's look at Galatians 3, verses 10-14.

    Galatians 3:10–14

  27. Before I read, I remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  28. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  29. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  30. Let's begin in verse 10 and following.

  31. For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse.

  32. For it is written,

  33. Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law and do them.

  34. Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law,

  35. for the righteous shall live by faith.

  36. But the law is not of faith.

  37. Rather, the one who does them shall live by them.

  38. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

  39. For it is written,

  40. Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.

  41. So that in Christ Jesus, the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles,

  42. so that we might receive the promised spirit through faith.

  43. The producer of a podcast called The White Horse Inn,

  44. which I would commend to you,

  45. recently conducted a survey at a conference for evangelical pastors

  46. where he asked the following questions.

  47. Number one,

  48. are we justified by faith alone,

  49. by faith and works,

  50. or by works alone?

  51. And,

  52. in your view,

  53. is justification a one-time declaration,

  54. or a lifelong process?

  55. Now these two questions are pursuing the same point,

  56. and it is a point that is extremely vital

  57. to a proper understanding of the good news of Jesus Christ.

  58. So I know I've tipped you off a little already,

  59. but take a moment and consider how you would answer these two questions.

  60. Somebody comes up to you on the street with a microphone,

  61. and says,

  62. are we justified by faith alone,

  63. by faith and works,

  64. or by works alone?

  65. And,

  66. in your view,

  67. is justification a one-time declaration,

  68. or a lifelong process?

  69. The majority response of the pastors at this particular conference were,

  70. we are justified by faith and works,

  71. and justification is a lifelong process.

  72. If you answer these questions in the same way,

  73. you are dreadfully wrong.

  74. This is likely not entirely your fault.

  75. You may have grown up in a church

  76. that one of these men pastored,

  77. that never addressed the matter,

  78. or,

  79. if they did,

  80. they did so poorly.

  81. But,

  82. beloved,

  83. a proper understanding of justification

  84. is at the very heart of the gospel.

  85. And at the end of all things,

  86. you will not be able to plead before God

  87. that your Bible went unread

  88. because of the church you grew up in.

  89. You see,

  90. if we fail to understand justification

  91. through faith alone,

  92. we fail to understand the gospel.

  93. In fact,

  94. any misunderstanding of justification

  95. is antithetical to the gospel

  96. and is very egregious.

  97. That is to say,

  98. it's the opposite of the gospel.

  99. I fear that in our day,

  100. there is more misunderstanding

  101. of how a person is saved

  102. than there was in the medieval Europe

  103. of Luther's day.

  104. So let's be sure today

  105. that we all have a clear understanding

  106. of justification through faith alone

  107. so that,

  108. number one,

  109. we can be saved.

  110. You may find yourself here this morning

  111. believing that you're in Christ

  112. because you have not understood

  113. justification by faith alone.

  114. You may think that you can be justified

  115. by your works.

  116. That you even being here

  117. is gaining you some favor with God

  118. so that we can be saved.

  119. Secondly,

  120. if we are,

  121. in fact,

  122. saved,

  123. that we can have assurance

  124. of our salvation.

  125. How is it that we can know

  126. that we belong to God,

  127. that we are justified

  128. before Him?

  129. And thirdly,

  130. so that we can help others

  131. come to faith

  132. and have assurance.

  133. If I am correct,

  134. and I believe that I am,

  135. about how much our culture

  136. is erring on this,

  137. then we need to be ambassadors

  138. for Christ.

  139. We need to preach the true gospel

  140. and help people understand

  141. how it is they can be saved

  142. and how it is they can be confident

  143. that they are saved.

  144. So let's do so by asking

  145. and answering four questions.

  146. I'm not going to alliterate today

  147. to make John MacArthur proud.

  148. I'm going to ask questions

  149. to make Clay Namor proud.

  150. Those questions are going to be as follows.

  151. Number one,

  152. what does it mean to be justified?

  153. I'm going to use that word a lot today.

  154. What does it mean

  155. to be justified?

  156. Secondly,

  157. why do we need to be justified

  158. through faith?

  159. Thirdly,

  160. how are we justified?

  161. Through faith?

  162. And fourthly,

  163. what is the relationship

  164. between faith

  165. and works?

  166. So number one,

  167. what does it mean

  168. to be

  169. justified?

  170. At Christ Family Church,

  171. we don't use

  172. large words

  173. because we want to

  174. appear smart.

  175. We try to use

  176. Bible words

  177. because if you're going to be

  178. faithful to the Scripture,

  179. you're going to come across

  180. these words.

  181. Some of you,

  182. I know,

  183. might be going,

  184. justified,

  185. that seems like a kind of

  186. churchy word.

  187. Yeah,

  188. it is.

  189. Because we're a people

  190. of the Word.

  191. So you've got to know

  192. what these things mean

  193. when you come across them

  194. in the Scripture.

  195. So we don't want to

  196. do away with

  197. big words,

  198. but we want to press you

  199. to understand

  200. big words.

  201. What a novel idea

  202. to give you an education.

  203. What a crazy thing.

  204. So,

  205. justification

  206. is a

  207. one-time

  208. declaration

  209. that we are

  210. righteous

  211. before God.

  212. The doctrine

  213. of justification

  214. includes

  215. both the idea

  216. that our guilt

  217. has been

  218. expunged,

  219. it's been done

  220. away with,

  221. and that we have

  222. been granted

  223. perfection.

  224. So,

  225. the negative

  226. debt that we had

  227. has been brought

  228. up to zero,

  229. and we've been given,

  230. we've been credited

  231. to our account,

  232. perfection,

  233. the righteousness

  234. that is Christ's.

  235. The occasion

  236. for Paul's writing

  237. of this letter

  238. to the church

  239. of Galatia

  240. was men

  241. who had come

  242. teaching

  243. what Paul calls

  244. a different

  245. and contrary

  246. gospel,

  247. right?

  248. An antithetical

  249. gospel.

  250. Look at Galatians

    Galatians 1:6

  251. chapter 1

  252. verse 6

  253. and following.

  254. Paul writes,

  255. I am astonished

  256. that you are so

  257. quickly deserting

  258. him,

  259. this is Christ,

  260. who called you,

  261. excuse me,

  262. it's the spirit,

  263. who called you

  264. in the grace

  265. of Christ

  266. and are turning

  267. to a different

  268. gospel.

  269. Not that there

  270. is another one,

  271. he's saying that

  272. there isn't good

  273. news found anywhere

  274. else,

  275. not that there

  276. is another one,

  277. but there are

  278. some who trouble

  279. you and want

  280. to distort

  281. the gospel

  282. of Christ.

  283. He then has

  284. some very strong

  285. words for anyone

  286. who would preach

  287. such a gospel

  288. beginning in verse

  289. 8.

  290. But even if we

  291. or an angel

  292. from heaven

  293. should preach

  294. to you a gospel

  295. contrary to the

  296. one we preach

  297. to you,

  298. let him be

  299. accursed.

  300. As we have said

  301. before,

  302. so now I say

  303. again,

  304. if anyone is

  305. preaching to you

  306. a gospel contrary

  307. to the one you

  308. have received,

  309. let him be

  310. accursed.

  311. These men

  312. who would come

  313. into the church

  314. of Galatia

  315. who are often

  316. called Judaizers

  317. were teaching

  318. faith in Jesus

  319. plus circumcision.

  320. Faith in Jesus

  321. plus the observation

  322. of certain feasts

  323. and this equals

  324. justification.

  325. This was the equation

  326. that they were teaching.

  327. Yeah,

  328. yeah,

  329. yeah.

  330. Right?

  331. Faith is good

  332. but also

  333. must add on to

  334. faith

  335. works.

  336. And Paul

  337. cries out

  338. in his letter

  339. to the Galatian

  340. church,

  341. no,

  342. by faith alone

  343. is one

  344. justified

  345. before God.

  346. So this is

  347. what justification

  348. is.

  349. A one-time

  350. declaration

  351. that we are

  352. righteous

  353. before God.

  354. Secondly,

  355. why do we need

  356. to be justified

  357. through faith?

  358. Back in our text,

  359. chapter 3,

  360. verse 10

  361. and following.

  362. For all who rely

  363. on works of the law

  364. are under

  365. a curse.

  366. We are

  367. cursed

  368. and we are

  369. incapable

  370. of earning

  371. our justification.

  372. Right?

  373. this is the purpose

  374. of the law

  375. to bring us

  376. to Christ.

  377. To show us

  378. how incapable

  379. we are

  380. of pleasing

  381. God

  382. apart

  383. from Christ.

  384. As previously stated,

  385. we are justified

  386. through faith

  387. alone.

  388. No one is justified

  389. by their works.

  390. Paul is abundantly

  391. clear about this

  392. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  393. Turn with me,

  394. if you will,

  395. please,

  396. to Romans 3.

  397. beginning

  398. in verse 10,

  399. Paul cites

  400. ancient words.

  401. He appeals

  402. to the authority

  403. of Scripture

  404. to make his case

  405. in Romans 3.

  406. As it is written,

  407. none is righteous.

  408. No,

  409. not one.

  410. No one understands.

  411. No one seeks

  412. for God.

  413. All have turned aside.

  414. Together they have

  415. become worthless.

  416. No one does good.

  417. Not even one.

  418. Their throat

  419. is an empty grave.

  420. They use their tongues

  421. to deceive.

  422. The venom of asps

  423. is under their lips.

  424. Their mouth

  425. is full of curses

  426. and bitterness.

  427. Their feet

  428. are swift

  429. to shed blood.

  430. And their paths

  431. are ruin

  432. and misery.

  433. And the way

  434. of peace

  435. they have not known.

  436. There is no

  437. fear of God

  438. before their eyes.

  439. This is not

  440. the beginning

  441. of the gospel

  442. preached

  443. in most churches

  444. today.

  445. Apart from Christ,

  446. you have become

  447. worthless.

  448. In Christ,

  449. you have

  450. great worth.

  451. But apart from Him,

  452. you are as dross

  453. to be thrown away

  454. of no value

  455. whatsoever

  456. in the kingdom

  457. of God.

  458. Flee

  459. to Christ.

  460. This is what

  461. the law

  462. is doing for us.

  463. It's showing us

  464. our great

  465. need.

  466. I've heard

  467. visitors of

  468. our church

  469. go away

  470. and complain

  471. that don't make

  472. them feel good

  473. about themselves

  474. when they come here.

  475. It's not my job

  476. to make you feel

  477. good about yourself.

  478. It's my job

  479. to make much

  480. of Christ.

  481. God is aimed

  482. at this

  483. very purpose.

  484. Paul is aimed

  485. at this

  486. very purpose.

  487. Flee to Christ.

  488. We have no

  489. righteousness of our own.

  490. We need the

  491. righteousness

  492. of Christ.

  493. And Paul's not

  494. alone in this.

  495. Remember verse 10,

  496. he says,

  497. as it is

  498. written.

  499. Psalm 14,

  500. 1-3.

  501. Psalm 53,

  502. 1-3.

  503. Psalm 5,

  504. 9.

  505. Psalm 143.

  506. Psalm 10,

  507. 7.

  508. Proverbs 1,

  509. 16.

  510. Chapter 3,

  511. verse 15-17.

  512. Isaiah 59,

  513. 7-8.

  514. And Psalm 36,

  515. 1.

  516. The text I just

  517. read to you,

  518. those are the places,

  519. those are all of the

  520. references for the

  521. places.

  522. The scripture speaks

  523. loudly to this point.

  524. We are under the

  525. curse of Adam.

  526. We have his

  527. sin apart

  528. from Christ.

  529. So,

  530. we cannot

  531. earn

  532. our way

  533. to heaven.

  534. It is

  535. a grand

  536. impossibility.

  537. Paul has been

  538. pressing this

  539. same point

  540. in his letter

  541. to the Galatians.

  542. You can go back

  543. to Galatians

    Galatians 2:16

  544. chapter 2,

  545. verse 16.

  546. We know

  547. that a person

  548. is not justified

  549. by works

  550. of the law,

  551. but through faith

  552. in Jesus Christ.

  553. So,

  554. we also have

  555. believed in

  556. Christ Jesus

  557. in order to be

  558. justified by faith

  559. in Christ

  560. and not by works

  561. of the law.

  562. Because by works

  563. of the law,

  564. no one

  565. will be

  566. justified.

  567. This is the

  568. very beginning.

  569. This is the

  570. bad news

  571. of the gospel

  572. of Jesus Christ.

  573. No one will be

  574. justified before God

  575. by their own

  576. working.

  577. And in many

  578. churches today,

  579. this doctrine,

  580. justification by faith

  581. alone,

  582. has been disregarded

  583. altogether.

  584. Many churches

  585. today,

  586. even this morning,

  587. I say with a

  588. great deal

  589. of grief,

  590. are preaching

  591. a soft

  592. prosperity gospel

  593. that says,

  594. do good

  595. so that you'll

  596. feel good

  597. and you'll

  598. get good.

  599. Beloved,

  600. this is not

  601. the gospel

  602. of Jesus Christ.

  603. Once a person

  604. realizes their

  605. need of

  606. justification,

  607. they recognize

  608. they cannot

  609. stand rightly

  610. before the

  611. creator of

  612. heaven and

  613. earth.

  614. They need

  615. to be

  616. justified.

  617. There is no

  618. greater question

  619. for that person

  620. to ask

  621. than,

  622. how must

  623. I be

  624. justified?

  625. How is it

  626. then?

  627. If I can't

  628. do it,

  629. how is it

  630. then that

  631. I can be

  632. justified?

  633. This was the

  634. great question

  635. of the

  636. Reformation.

  637. This was the

  638. splinter in

  639. Martin Luther's

  640. mind.

  641. This is what

  642. drove him to

  643. become a monk.

  644. He thought,

  645. certainly if

  646. there's any

  647. place that

  648. righteousness

  649. can be

  650. found,

  651. it's in

  652. the good

  653. work of

  654. the

  655. monkery,

  656. which is

  657. the proper

  658. word.

  659. But he

  660. did not

  661. find it

  662. there.

  663. Rather,

  664. he found

  665. it in

  666. the scripture

  667. as he

  668. was preparing,

  669. he was

  670. translating,

  671. preparing to

  672. lecture from

  673. Romans chapter

  674. one.

  675. The righteous

  676. shall live

  677. by faith.

  678. It is of

  679. highest importance

  680. this morning

  681. that you see

  682. your need

  683. of justification

  684. by faith

  685. alone.

  686. Now,

  687. what is

  688. faith?

  689. Faith is

  690. not merely

  691. a mental

  692. ascension.

  693. Faith is

  694. not merely

  695. going,

  696. yeah,

  697. yeah,

  698. Jesus.

  699. But it

  700. is belief

  701. or I

  702. prefer

  703. trust.

  704. But this

  705. trust can

  706. not just be

  707. placed anywhere

  708. that you would

  709. like to place

  710. your trust.

  711. You cannot

  712. simply have

  713. faith in

  714. anything,

  715. but you

  716. must place

  717. your trust

  718. in the

  719. person and

  720. work of

  721. Jesus Christ.

  722. So we are

  723. justified

  724. through faith

  725. alone in

  726. Christ

  727. alone.

  728. And that

  729. brings us to

  730. our third

  731. question,

  732. which I just

  733. kind of

  734. answered.

  735. but how

  736. are we

  737. justified

  738. through

  739. faith?

  740. Verse 13,

  741. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  742. chapter 3,

  743. Christ

  744. redeemed us

  745. from the

  746. curse of the

  747. law by

  748. becoming a

  749. curse for

  750. us.

  751. So saving

  752. faith,

  753. trust that

  754. Jesus

  755. is the

  756. Christ.

  757. It's a title

  758. given to

  759. him,

  760. the promised

  761. redeemer of

  762. the Old

  763. Testament.

  764. God a

  765. promise to

  766. sin,

  767. and that

  768. he is

  769. the son

  770. of God.

  771. Christ

  772. redeemed us.

  773. Christ

  774. paid the

  775. ransom to

  776. deliver us

  777. from the

  778. captivity of

  779. our sin.

  780. John writes

  781. in 1 John

  782. 5,

  783. 1,

  784. everyone who

  785. believes that

  786. Jesus is

  787. the Christ

  788. has been

  789. born of

  790. God.

  791. So saving

  792. faith,

  793. trust in

  794. the person

  795. of Christ,

  796. who he

  797. in fact

  798. is,

  799. who he

  800. said he

  801. is,

  802. and saving

  803. faith,

  804. trust in

  805. the work

  806. of Jesus

  807. Christ.

  808. So in

  809. verses 13

  810. to 14,

  811. we have

  812. these two

  813. phrases,

  814. Christ

  815. redeemed us

  816. from the

  817. curse of

  818. the law

  819. by becoming

  820. a curse

  821. for us.

  822. As it is

  823. written,

  824. cursed is

  825. everyone who

  826. hangs on

  827. a tree.

  828. So Jesus

  829. takes our

  830. place on

  831. the cross

  832. of Calvary.

  833. And the

  834. second phrase,

  835. so that

  836. we might

  837. receive the

  838. promised

  839. spirit

  840. through faith.

  841. I see in

  842. these two

  843. phrases both

  844. sides of

  845. justification.

  846. Recall that

  847. our previously

  848. defined

  849. justification

  850. as follows.

  851. Justification

  852. is a

  853. one-time

  854. declaration

  855. that we

  856. are righteous

  857. before God.

  858. And then I

  859. went on to

  860. say the

  861. doctrine

  862. includes

  863. both the

  864. idea that

  865. our guilt

  866. has been

  867. expunged

  868. and we

  869. have been

  870. granted

  871. perfection.

  872. So first

  873. we see that

  874. our sins

  875. have been

  876. forgiven

  877. because

  878. Christ

  879. became

  880. a curse

  881. for us.

  882. Beloved,

  883. you see,

  884. because God

  885. is just,

  886. He cannot

  887. merely dismiss

  888. crimes

  889. against Him.

  890. He doesn't

  891. simply overlook

  892. the offense

  893. because it

  894. would be

  895. against His

  896. character.

  897. He cannot.

  898. He must

  899. punish

  900. crime

  901. against Him.

  902. And if you

  903. have placed

  904. your faith

  905. in Jesus

  906. Christ,

  907. then your

  908. sins were

  909. punished

  910. in Christ.

  911. This is

  912. often called

  913. Jesus'

  914. passive

  915. obedience.

  916. He died

  917. in your

  918. stead.

  919. He was

  920. sacrificed

  921. as your

  922. substitute.

  923. This is

  924. called

  925. substitutionary,

  926. atonement.

  927. This is a

  928. good

  929. reformation

  930. phrase.

  931. Christ

  932. died.

  933. He atoned

  934. for us

  935. in our

  936. place.

  937. Only

  938. God

  939. Himself

  940. could bear

  941. the wrath

  942. of God.

  943. Eternal

  944. punishment

  945. poured out

  946. in those

  947. moments on

  948. the cross

  949. in Christ.

  950. Your sins

  951. were imputed,

  952. were given

  953. to Christ

  954. as He

  955. suffered

  956. on the

  957. cross.

  958. And secondly,

  959. that we have

  960. been granted

  961. His righteousness

  962. because we

  963. have received

  964. the promised

  965. Spirit

  966. through faith.

  967. In verse

  968. 11,

  969. Paul cites

  970. Habakkuk 2.4,

  971. the righteous

  972. shall live

  973. by faith.

  974. In Romans

  975. 8.4,

  976. and then in

  977. verse 9,

  978. Paul wrote,

  979. In order

  980. that the

  981. righteous

  982. requirement of

  983. the law

  984. might be

  985. fulfilled in

  986. us,

  987. who walk

  988. not according

  989. to the

  990. flesh,

  991. but according

  992. to the

  993. Spirit.

  994. And then in

  995. verse 9,

  996. You,

  997. however,

  998. are not in

  999. the flesh,

  1000. but in

  1001. the Spirit,

  1002. if in fact

  1003. the Spirit

  1004. of God

  1005. dwells in

  1006. you.

  1007. If anyone

  1008. does not

  1009. have the

  1010. Spirit of

  1011. Christ,

  1012. he does

  1013. not belong

  1014. to Him.

  1015. You can tell

  1016. my notes

  1017. got goofy

  1018. there for

  1019. a second.

  1020. So that

  1021. we can

  1022. receive the

  1023. promise of

  1024. the Spirit

  1025. through

  1026. faith.

  1027. I believe

  1028. that Paul

  1029. here is

  1030. given that

  1031. other

  1032. expression

  1033. of it.

  1034. Because we

  1035. are found

  1036. righteous

  1037. in Christ

  1038. by the

  1039. power

  1040. of the

  1041. Spirit.

  1042. God

  1043. requires

  1044. perfection.

  1045. And through

  1046. faith,

  1047. we are

  1048. made

  1049. perfect

  1050. in

  1051. Christ.

  1052. He

  1053. perfectly

  1054. kept

  1055. God's

  1056. law.

  1057. This is

  1058. often referred

  1059. to as

  1060. His

  1061. active

  1062. obedience.

  1063. And His

  1064. righteousness

  1065. is imputed,

  1066. it's given

  1067. to us.

  1068. Martin Luther

  1069. called this

  1070. the great

  1071. exchange.

  1072. We can

  1073. find in

  1074. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  1075. chapter 5

  1076. verse 21

  1077. a beautiful

  1078. summary of

  1079. Christ's

  1080. work in

  1081. our

  1082. justification.

  1083. Paul

  1084. wrote,

  1085. For our

  1086. sake,

  1087. God

  1088. made

  1089. Jesus

  1090. to be

  1091. sin

  1092. who

  1093. knew

  1094. no

  1095. sin

  1096. so

  1097. that

  1098. in

  1099. Him

  1100. we

  1101. might

  1102. become

  1103. the

  1104. righteousness

  1105. of God.

  1106. This

  1107. double

  1108. imputation

  1109. is what

  1110. justifies

  1111. us

  1112. through

  1113. faith.

  1114. It

  1115. cannot be

  1116. achieved

  1117. by works

  1118. but only

  1119. through

  1120. faith in

  1121. Jesus

  1122. Christ's

  1123. person

  1124. and

  1125. work.

  1126. Faith

  1127. is the

  1128. instrument

  1129. of our

  1130. justification

  1131. but our

  1132. justification

  1133. is still

  1134. all of

  1135. grace.

  1136. We are

  1137. justified

  1138. by grace

  1139. through

  1140. faith

  1141. in

  1142. Christ.

  1143. That is

  1144. why we

  1145. do not

  1146. say we

  1147. are justified

  1148. because

  1149. of faith

  1150. but rather

  1151. through it.

  1152. Here

  1153. a reformer

  1154. spoke of

  1155. faith like

  1156. an open

  1157. hand.

  1158. A hand

  1159. that receives

  1160. the merit

  1161. of Christ.

  1162. It's not

  1163. the work

  1164. of faith

  1165. that makes

  1166. us justified.

  1167. It's that

  1168. we believe

  1169. in the

  1170. merit of

  1171. Jesus Christ.

  1172. This open

  1173. hand

  1174. grasps

  1175. hold of

  1176. Him

  1177. and what

  1178. He did

  1179. bearing

  1180. our sin

  1181. and granting

  1182. us

  1183. His

  1184. righteousness.

  1185. And that's

  1186. why we

  1187. often link

  1188. the solos

  1189. together

  1190. as we

  1191. speak of

  1192. them.

  1193. Justified

  1194. by grace

  1195. alone

  1196. through

  1197. faith

  1198. alone

  1199. in

  1200. Christ

  1201. alone.

  1202. In

  1203. this way

  1204. saving

  1205. faith

  1206. is a

  1207. resting

  1208. faith.

  1209. It

  1210. rests

  1211. in

  1212. Christ's

  1213. work

  1214. on our

  1215. behalf.

  1216. This is

  1217. one way

  1218. you have

  1219. assurance

  1220. before God

  1221. because

  1222. Christ

  1223. accomplished

  1224. it.

  1225. In the

  1226. beloved

  1227. accepted

  1228. and free.

  1229. We're

  1230. accepted

  1231. in

  1232. Christ.

  1233. Jesus

  1234. tells a

  1235. parable

  1236. in

  1237. Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1238. chapter

  1239. 18

  1240. beginning

  1241. in

  1242. verse

  1243. 9.

  1244. Luke

  1245. records

  1246. Jesus

  1247. also

  1248. told

  1249. this

  1250. parable

  1251. to

  1252. some

  1253. who

  1254. trusted

  1255. in

  1256. themselves

  1257. that

  1258. they

  1259. were

  1260. righteous.

  1261. They

  1262. thought

  1263. they

  1264. could

  1265. work

  1266. their

  1267. way

  1268. into

  1269. favor

  1270. !

  1271. and

  1272. treated

  1273. others

  1274. with

  1275. contempt.

  1276. Two

  1277. men

  1278. went up

  1279. into

  1280. the

  1281. temple

  1282. to

  1283. pray.

  1284. One

  1285. a

  1286. Pharisee

  1287. and

  1288. the

  1289. other

  1290. a

  1291. tax

  1292. collector.

  1293. The

  1294. Pharisee

  1295. standing

  1296. by

  1297. himself

  1298. prayed

  1299. thus,

  1300. God

  1301. I

  1302. thank

  1303. you

  1304. that

  1305. I

  1306. am

  1307. not

  1308. like

  1309. other

  1310. men

  1311. extortioners

  1312. unjust

  1313. adulterers

  1314. or even

  1315. like

  1316. this

  1317. tax

  1318. collector.

  1319. I

  1320. fast

  1321. twice

  1322. a

  1323. week.

  1324. I

  1325. give

  1326. tithes

  1327. of

  1328. all

  1329. that

  1330. I

  1331. get.

  1332. There's

  1333. things

  1334. I

  1335. don't

  1336. do

  1337. and

  1338. there's

  1339. things

  1340. that

  1341. I

  1342. do.

  1343. I

  1344. thank

  1345. you

  1346. that

  1347. I

  1348. am

  1349. so

  1350. pleasing

  1351. to

  1352. you.

  1353. Verse

  1354. 13

  1355. But

  1356. the

  1357. tax

  1358. collector

  1359. standing

  1360. far

  1361. off

  1362. would

  1363. not

  1364. even

  1365. lift

  1366. up

  1367. his

  1368. eyes

  1369. to

  1370. heaven

  1371. but

  1372. beat

  1373. his

  1374. breast

  1375. saying

  1376. God

  1377. be

  1378. merciful

  1379. to

  1380. me

  1381. a

  1382. sinner.

  1383. And

  1384. then

  1385. Jesus

  1386. says

  1387. verse

  1388. 14

  1389. I

  1390. tell

  1391. you

  1392. this

  1393. man

  1394. went

  1395. down

  1396. to

  1397. his

  1398. house

  1399. justified

  1400. rather

  1401. than

  1402. the

  1403. other

  1404. for

  1405. everyone

  1406. who

  1407. exalts

  1408. himself

  1409. will

  1410. be

  1411. humbled

  1412. but

  1413. the

  1414. one

  1415. who

  1416. humbles

  1417. himself

  1418. will

  1419. be

  1420. exalted.

  1421. The

  1422. one

  1423. who

  1424. comes

  1425. humbly

  1426. I

  1427. have

  1428. nothing

  1429. to

  1430. offer

  1431. for

  1432. my

  1433. justification

  1434. except

  1435. the

  1436. completed

  1437. work

  1438. of

  1439. Christ.

  1440. So

  1441. this

  1442. is

  1443. how

  1444. it

  1445. is

  1446. that

  1447. we

  1448. are

  1449. justified

  1450. through

  1452. And

  1453. fourthly

  1454. and

  1455. lastly

  1456. !

  1457. What

  1458. is

  1459. the

  1460. relationship

  1461. between

  1462. faith

  1463. and

  1464. works?

  1465. What

  1466. of

  1467. all

  1468. the

  1469. commands

  1470. of

  1471. scripture?

  1472. What

  1473. of

  1474. the

  1475. moral

  1476. law?

  1477. We

  1478. mentioned

  1479. that

  1480. this

  1481. morning

  1482. with

  1483. the

  1484. kids.

  1485. Exodus

  1503. Paul

  1517. and

  1518. 2.

  1519. What

  1520. shall

  1521. we

  1522. say

  1523. then?

  1524. We

  1525. just

  1526. talked

  1527. about

  1528. justification

  1529. through

  1530. faith

  1531. alone.

  1532. What

  1533. shall

  1534. we

  1535. say

  1536. then?

  1537. Are

  1538. we

  1539. to

  1540. continue

  1541. in

  1542. sin

  1543. that

  1544. grace

  1545. may

  1546. abound?

  1547. And

  1548. in

  1557. which I

  1558. cannot

  1559. translate

  1560. into

  1581. think

  1582. he

  1583. may

  1584. have

  1585. said

  1586. there

  1587. how

  1588. can

  1589. he

  1590. we

  1591. who

  1592. die

  1593. to

  1594. sin

  1595. still

  1596. live

  1597. in

  1602. we

  1603. are

  1604. not

  1605. justified

  1608. we

  1609. are

  1610. justified

  1611. by

  1613. alone

  1614. but

  1615. yet

  1616. we

  1617. work

  1618. so

  1619. what

  1620. is

  1621. that

  1622. relationship

  1623. good

  1624. works

  1625. are

  1626. the

  1627. evidence

  1628. of

  1629. our

  1631. and

  1632. beloved

  1633. we

  1634. must

  1635. get

  1636. this

  1637. equation

  1638. right

  1639. and

  1640. we

  1641. must

  1642. help

  1643. others

  1644. see

  1645. it

  1646. not

  1647. Jesus

  1648. plus

  1650. and the

  1651. observation

  1652. of

  1653. certain

  1654. feasts

  1655. equals

  1656. justification

  1657. or

  1658. Jesus

  1659. plus

  1660. attending

  1661. church

  1662. or sharing

  1663. the gospel

  1664. or going

  1665. on mission

  1666. trips

  1667. or dressing

  1668. modestly

  1669. or avoiding

  1670. course

  1671. joking

  1672. or

  1673. serving

  1674. the poor

  1675. all wonderful

  1676. things

  1677. but not

  1678. Jesus

  1679. plus

  1680. those

  1681. things

  1682. equals

  1683. justification

  1684. but

  1685. rather

  1686. faith

  1687. in

  1688. Jesus

  1689. Christ

  1690. equals

  1691. justification

  1692. which

  1693. yields

  1694. good

  1695. works

  1696. faith

  1697. alone

  1698. faith

  1699. in

  1700. Jesus

  1701. Christ

  1702. equals

  1703. justification

  1704. which

  1705. yields

  1706. good

  1707. works

  1708. the

  1709. good

  1710. works

  1711. become

  1712. the

  1713. evidencing

  1714. of

  1715. the

  1716. faith

  1717. that

  1718. we

  1719. have

  1720. so

  1721. we're

  1722. accepted

  1723. therefore

  1724. we

  1725. work

  1726. not

  1727. we

  1728. work

  1729. in

  1730. order

  1731. to

  1732. be

  1733. accepted

  1734. having

  1735. been

  1736. accepted

  1737. out

  1738. of

  1739. grateful

  1740. response

  1741. the

  1742. spirit

  1743. of

  1744. God

  1745. abiding

  1746. in

  1747. us

  1748. changing

  1749. who

  1750. we

  1751. are

  1752. from

  1753. the

  1754. inside

  1755. we

  1756. begin

  1757. to

  1758. work

  1759. that

  1760. out

  1761. outside

  1762. so

  1763. we

  1764. pick

  1765. up

  1766. and we

  1767. obey

  1768. the

  1769. commands

  1770. of

  1771. God

  1772. right

  1773. we

  1774. grow

  1775. in

  1776. this

  1777. this

  1778. is

  1779. the

  1780. process

  1781. called

  1782. sanctification

  1783. right

  1784. sanctification

  1785. is a

  1786. lifelong

  1787. process

  1788. justification

  1789. is a

  1790. one

  1791. time

  1792. declaration

  1793. it

  1794. grieved

  1795. me

  1796. at a

  1797. small

  1798. local

  1799. baptist

  1800. school

  1801. that I

  1802. used to

  1803. work at

  1804. to see

  1805. the

  1806. testimonies

  1807. of students

  1808. coming in

  1809. all of the

  1810. applications

  1811. of the

  1812. school

  1813. had

  1814. testimonies

  1815. on it

  1816. how the

  1817. the

  1818. I could

  1819. sum up

  1820. for you

  1821. the

  1822. common

  1823. testimony

  1824. for young

  1825. people

  1826. coming to

  1827. this

  1828. small

  1829. baptist

  1830. college

  1831. were

  1832. something

  1833. like

  1834. this

  1835. I

  1836. grew

  1837. up

  1838. in a

  1839. Christian

  1840. home

  1841. I

  1842. attended

  1843. church

  1844. all my

  1845. life

  1846. at

  1847. summer

  1848. camp

  1849. I

  1850. responded

  1851. to an

  1852. invitation

  1853. and now

  1854. I go on

  1855. mission

  1856. trips

  1857. and I

  1858. serve

  1859. in the

  1860. church

  1861. and I

  1862. hope

  1863. with every

  1864. one of

  1865. them that

  1866. I read

  1867. I hoped

  1868. that that

  1869. little

  1870. response

  1871. was saving

  1872. but they

  1873. seem to

  1874. bank so

  1875. much

  1876. in their

  1877. pedigree

  1878. and in

  1879. their

  1880. activity

  1881. this is

  1882. how I

  1883. know

  1884. because I'm

  1885. working

  1886. look at

  1887. me

  1888. working

  1889. rather

  1890. than

  1891. praising

  1892. in their

  1893. testimony

  1894. the work

  1895. of Christ

  1896. on their

  1897. behalf

  1898. and beloved

  1899. you are not

  1900. the hero

  1901. of your

  1902. testimony

  1903. Jesus

  1904. Christ

  1905. is

  1906. and a

  1907. testimony

  1908. that's

  1909. not

  1910. just

  1911. covered

  1912. in his

  1913. blood

  1914. may not

  1915. be a

  1916. testimony

  1917. of saving

  1918. faith

  1919. now

  1920. Martin

  1921. Luther

  1922. notoriously

  1923. called

  1924. the book

  1925. of James

  1926. an epistle

  1927. of straw

  1928. and wished

  1929. it had been

  1930. excluded

  1931. from the

  1932. canon

  1933. because of

  1934. its apparent

  1935. contradiction

  1936. of the

  1937. doctrine of

  1938. justification

  1939. by faith

  1940. alone

  1941. all of

  1942. these men

  1943. had errors

  1944. at some

  1945. point

  1946. he offered

  1947. to award

  1948. anyone

  1949. who could

  1950. reconcile

  1951. James

  1952. and Paul

  1953. I wonder

  1954. what the

  1955. award would

  1956. have been

  1957. for that

  1958. I believe

  1959. this was

  1960. largely

  1961. a reaction

  1962. to Rome's

  1963. improper

  1964. use of

  1965. the book

  1966. of James

  1967. they love

  1968. to flee

  1969. to James

  1970. to make

  1971. the case

  1972. for

  1973. justification

  1974. by

  1975. works

  1976. and it's

  1977. because of

  1978. the following

  1979. text

  1980. I'm going to

  1981. invite you

  1982. to turn

  1983. with me

  1984. to James

    James 2 chapter mention

  1985. chapter 2

  1986. it's right

  1987. after Hebrews

  1988. so if you can

  1989. hit Hebrews

  1990. it's right

  1991. after Hebrews

  1992. beginning

  1993. in verse

  1994. 14

  1995. what good

  1996. is it my

  1997. brothers

  1998. if someone

  1999. says he

  2000. has faith

  2001. but does

  2002. not have

  2003. works

  2004. can that

  2005. faith

  2006. save him

  2007. if a brother

  2008. or sister

  2009. is poorly

  2010. clothed

  2011. and lacking

  2012. in daily

  2013. food

  2014. and one

  2015. of you

  2016. says to

  2017. them

  2018. go in

  2019. peace

  2020. be warmed

  2021. and filled

  2022. without giving

  2023. them the things

  2024. needed for the

  2025. body

  2026. what good

  2027. is that

  2028. so also

  2029. faith by

  2030. itself

  2031. if it does

  2032. not have

  2033. works

  2034. is dead

  2035. but what

  2036. Helmand

  2037. will say

  2038. you have

  2039. faith

  2040. and I

  2041. have

  2042. works

  2043. show me

  2044. your faith

  2045. apart from

  2046. your works

  2047. and I

  2048. will show

  2049. you my

  2050. faith

  2051. by my

  2052. works

  2053. you believe

  2054. that God

  2055. is one

  2056. you do

  2057. well

  2058. even the

  2059. demons

  2060. believe

  2061. and shudder

  2062. now if you've

  2063. been hearing me

  2064. across the past

  2065. 35 or so minutes

  2066. does this create

  2067. a problem

  2068. for you

  2069. hang on a

  2070. second

  2071. he has

  2072. just said

  2073. and he's

  2074. going to

  2075. say some

  2076. things

  2077. that are

  2078. even a

  2079. little

  2080. more

  2081. controversial

  2082. soon

  2083. but

  2084. but we

  2085. have to

  2086. have

  2087. we have

  2088. to have

  2089. it

  2090. right

  2091. faith

  2092. by itself

  2093. if it

  2094. does not

  2095. have

  2096. works

  2097. is

  2098. dead

  2099. I will

  2100. show you

  2101. my faith

  2102. by my

  2103. works

  2104. but then he

  2105. sets up

  2106. for us

  2107. a very

  2108. interesting

  2109. juxtaposition

  2110. which we're

  2111. about to get

  2112. into

  2113. he starts

  2114. by saying

  2115. you believe

  2116. that God

  2117. is one

  2118. you do

  2119. well

  2120. however

  2121. is what he's

  2122. essentially saying

  2123. even the

  2124. demons

  2125. believe

  2126. and shudder

  2127. they're in

  2128. fear

  2129. of

  2130. this God

  2131. but what

  2132. do the

  2133. demons

  2134. not have

  2135. that he's

  2136. referring to

  2137. the works

  2138. right

  2139. so verse 20

  2140. he goes on

  2141. do you want

  2142. to be shown

  2143. you foolish

  2144. person

  2145. that faith

  2146. apart from

  2147. works

  2148. is useless

  2149. and here's

  2150. here's who

  2151. he sets up

  2152. as the example

  2153. against

  2154. the demons

  2155. who do

  2156. not have

  2157. good works

  2158. verse 21

  2159. was not

  2160. Abraham

  2161. our father

  2162. justified

  2163. by works

  2164. that's a

  2165. troubling phrase

  2166. isn't it

  2167. was not

  2168. Abraham

  2169. our father

  2170. justified

  2171. by works

  2172. when he

  2173. offered up

  2174. his son

  2175. Isaac

  2176. on the

  2177. altar

  2178. you see

  2179. that faith

  2180. was active

  2181. along with

  2182. his works

  2183. and faith

  2184. was completed

  2185. by his

  2186. works

  2187. and the

  2188. scripture

  2189. was fulfilled

  2190. that says

  2191. Abraham

  2192. believed

  2193. God

  2194. and it

  2195. was counted

  2196. to him

  2197. as

  2198. righteous

  2199. righteousness

  2200. and he

  2201. was called

  2202. a friend

  2203. of God

  2204. okay so

  2205. in our

  2206. in our

  2207. English

  2208. translations

  2209. this causes

  2210. a lot

  2211. of trouble

  2212. right

  2213. we go

  2214. that could

  2215. be

  2216. very troubling

  2217. but what is he

  2218. trying to show

  2219. what is the

  2220. what's the larger

2221. context and what is he

  2222. trying to show

  2223. right

  2224. James is saying

  2225. that works

  2226. evidence

  2227. faith

  2228. right

  2229. so for someone

  2230. to simply

  2231. say they

  2232. believe

  2233. and not

  2234. believe in a

  2235. way

  2236. right

  2237. that shows

  2238. their belief

  2239. he's saying

  2240. is useless

  2241. it's dead

  2242. it's dead

  2243. faith

  2244. it's not

  2245. real faith

  2246. at all

  2247. it never

  2248. was real

  2249. faith

  2250. right

  2251. here we have

  2252. demons who say

  2253. they believe

  2254. and yet they don't

  2255. have works

  2256. evidencing that

  2257. so you've got to

  2258. you've got to see

  2259. the juxtaposition

  2260. between the demons

  2261. and Abraham

  2262. but we have

  2263. Abraham

  2264. doing what

  2265. offering up his

  2266. son Isaac

  2267. on the altar

  2268. proving

  2269. that he

  2270. believed

  2271. not just simply

  2272. saying

  2273. to God

  2274. I believe

  2275. in the

  2276. promise

  2277. but actually

  2278. proving

  2279. that he

  2280. saw God

  2281. as faithful

  2282. he believed

  2283. and it was

  2284. counted to him

  2285. as

  2286. righteousness

  2287. Paul in

  2288. Romans 4

    Romans 4:1–3

  2289. verses 1

  2290. through 3

  2291. references the

  2292. same text

  2293. as James

  2294. here

  2295. what then

  2296. shall we say

  2297. was gained

  2298. by Abraham

  2299. our forefather

  2300. according to

  2301. the flesh

  2302. for if Abraham

  2303. was justified

  2304. by works

  2305. he has something

  2306. to boast about

  2307. but not before

  2308. God

  2309. for what

  2310. does the

  2311. scripture

  2312. say

  2313. Abraham

  2314. believed

  2315. God

  2316. and it

  2317. was

  2318. counted

  2319. to him

  2320. as

  2321. righteousness

  2322. verse 24

  2323. back in

  2324. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  2325. you see

  2326. that a person

  2327. is justified

  2328. by works

  2329. and not by

  2330. faith alone

  2331. another troubling

  2332. verse

  2333. and in the

  2334. same way

  2335. was not also

  2336. Rahab the

  2337. prostitute

  2338. justified

  2339. by works

  2340. when she

  2341. received

  2342. the messengers

  2343. and sent

  2344. them out

  2345. by another

  2346. way

  2347. so again

  2348. another example

  2349. of somebody

  2350. who's

  2351. working

  2352. and that

  2353. seems to

  2354. be what

  2355. James is

  2356. saying

  2357. that they're

  2358. justified

  2359. by the

  2360. work

  2361. verse 26

  2362. summarizes it

  2363. for as the

  2364. body apart

  2365. from the

  2366. spirit is

  2367. dead

  2368. so also

  2369. faith

  2370. apart

  2371. from works

  2372. is dead

  2373. so grapple

  2374. with this

  2375. what I'm

  2376. saying to

  2377. you

  2378. is that

  2379. they are

  2380. entirely

  2381. consistent

  2382. with one

  2383. another

  2384. and what

  2385. James is

  2386. communicating

  2387. to us

  2388. is that

  2389. if you

  2390. have

  2391. saving

  2392. faith

  2393. you genuinely

  2394. place faith

  2395. in Jesus

  2396. Christ

  2397. you will

  2398. work and

  2399. evidence

  2400. that

  2401. that's

  2402. the simplicity

  2403. of what

  2404. he's doing

  2405. you will

  2406. obey the

  2407. commands

  2408. of God

  2409. in a

  2410. growing way

  2411. we don't

  2412. obey it

  2413. perfectly

  2414. ever

  2415. but we're

  2416. working

  2417. this process

  2418. of sanctification

  2419. growing in

  2420. holiness

  2421. a bit

  2422. by bit

  2423. day

  2424. by day

  2425. further

  2426. to make

  2427. my point

  2428. of the

  2429. synthesis

  2430. between the

  2431. two

  2432. the book

  2433. of James

  2434. was likely

  2435. written

  2436. in 45

  2437. AD

  2438. five years

  2439. before the

  2440. Jerusalem

  2441. council

  2442. at which

  2443. Paul

  2444. and James

  2445. who was an

  2446. elder

  2447. the Jerusalem

  2448. church

  2449. agreed that

  2450. we are saved

  2451. by grace

  2452. alone

  2453. through faith

  2454. you can read

  2455. about that

  2456. in Acts

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  2457. chapter 15

  2458. so we see

  2459. the synergy

  2460. between the

  2461. two of them

  2462. so

  2463. you may not

  2464. be satisfied

  2465. with that

  2466. I don't know

  2467. if Martin

  2468. Luther would

  2469. have been

  2470. but there

  2471. is Paul

  2472. and James

  2473. reconciled

  2474. pay up

  2475. Martin

  2476. Luther

  2477. later in

  2478. his life

  2479. he seemed

  2480. to have

  2481. arrived

  2482. at the

  2483. same

  2484. conclusion

  2485. listen to

  2486. a bit

  2487. of what

  2488. he wrote

  2489. the very

  2490. first part

  2491. of this

  2492. is on

  2493. your

  2494. bulletin

  2495. Luther

  2496. wrote

  2497. oh it

  2498. is a

  2499. living

  2500. busy

  2501. active

  2502. mighty

  2503. thing

  2504. this

  2505. faith

  2506. and then

  2507. he goes

  2508. on

  2509. and so

  2510. it is

  2511. impossible

  2512. for it

  2513. not to

  2514. do

  2515. good

  2516. works

  2517. I love

  2518. this word

  2519. incessantly

  2520. it does

  2521. not ask

  2522. whether there

  2523. are good

  2524. works

  2525. to do

  2526. but before

  2527. the question

  2528. rises

  2529. it has

  2530. already

  2531. done

  2532. them

  2533. and is

  2534. always

  2535. at the

  2536. doing

  2537. of them

  2538. he also

  2539. wrote

  2540. faith is a

  2541. living

  2542. restless

  2543. thing

  2544. it cannot

  2545. be

  2546. inoperative

  2547. we are not

  2548. saved

  2549. by works

  2550. but if

  2551. there be

  2552. no works

  2553. there must

  2554. be something

  2555. amiss

  2556. with faith

  2557. so in

  2558. conclusion

  2559. we are

  2560. justified

  2561. by grace

  2562. alone

  2563. through faith

  2564. alone

  2565. in Christ

  2566. alone

  2567. this

  2568. justification

  2569. is a

  2570. one time

  2571. declaration

  2572. of our

  2573. righteousness

  2574. in Jesus

  2575. Christ

  2576. which

  2577. evidences

  2578. itself

  2579. in our

  2580. activity

  2581. a faith

  2582. that rests

  2583. in the

  2584. merit of

  2585. Christ

  2586. is a

  2587. faith

  2588. that works

  2589. in grateful

  2590. response

  2591. let's pray

  2592. together
