  1. Struggling with knowing what to share this morning, I actually had an entire message already prepared as of a day ago.

  2. !

  3. So, I have, in view of it being the day of prayer for the persecuted church, I just want you to be aware that I feel very unworthy to even be standing up here to even speak about them a lot of the time.

  4. I don't want to put myself on their level.

  5. This is just a personal conviction.

  6. You don't have to follow it, but I refuse to say that I've been persecuted just because I've faced some humiliation or ridicule by people that are around me.

  7. Here in the U.S., where there really is no threat of anything other than your wounded pride, I just don't want to wear that badge.

  8. If it happens, you know, fine.

  9. But I do, over the years, our brothers and sisters around the world really have convicted me of how I've lived and what I'm doing in my life.

  10. I encourage you to read Richard Wambron's book, Torture for Christ.

  11. I've read it at least five or six times, and every time there's always like a new desire to reach people for Christ at all costs.

  12. Just after I've read it.

  13. And so just with that in mind, just knowing that, like, I take this very seriously, and I'm praying that God uses this time.

  14. We may run a little bit over 12 o'clock, so it's okay.

  15. You can wait to eat lunch when so many people are without in the world.

  16. You're going to get there.

  17. So those of you who are hangry, just get over it and just learn that it's not justified.

  18. So we're going to be in John 15, but we're going to look at some other places today.

  19. So I hope you have your Bible, flipping fingers, ready.

  20. We're going to start in John 15.

  21. Just look at verse 18.

  22. We're just going to read through 21.

  23. This is Jesus talking to his disciples.

  24. He's preparing to die and to face crucifixion.

  25. And this is what he says, verse 18.

  26. If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

  27. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own.

  28. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

  29. Remember the word that I have said to you.

  30. A servant is not greater than his master.

  31. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

  32. If they kept my word, they would also keep yours.

  33. But all these things they do to you on the account of my name,

  34. because they do not know him who sent me.

  35. Just join me in prayer.

  36. Father, I just ask that this morning you would use your word to break down any kind of entitlement

  37. or any desire that we have to flee your presence.

  38. That we would face you.

  39. That you would show us our sin.

  40. That we would have the faith to know how to deal with it in our hearts and in our lives.

  41. Challenge us this day.

  42. And thank you for the examples we find in your word of people who suffered and died for the cause of Christ

  43. and are still doing so today.

  44. Make us aware of that, Lord.

  45. And just ask that in Christ's name.

  46. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. So, do you know that nearly, nearly 160,000 Christians will be killed this year?

  49. That was roughly what the statistics have been over the last few years and they're increasing.

  50. And we're going to just use this text just to kind of start walking through,

  51. kind of setting the background for persecution.

  52. But you'll notice a word that pops up a lot here in these few verses.

  53. And it's just the term, the world.

  54. Okay?

  55. And the word here is cosmos.

  56. It means the order or the system.

  57. It's not talking about like the beauty of creation or the beauty of nature or the created order.

  58. It's speaking in terms of, it's using a negative sense here to talk about like how the people of this world are alienated from God.

  59. It's the world is a way of thinking, an ideology, a perception of life and the purpose of life that sets itself against God and God's purposes.

  60. It's a whole system of organized humanity that is hostile towards God and alienated from God.

  61. So, that's the truth of what we're talking about here.

  62. It's the way that the world is going and flowing.

  63. So, when Jesus says, he warns his disciples that the world will hate you, the cosmos will hate you.

  64. And then he explains why.

  65. Because the world has hated him.

  66. You know, Christ came into the world in love and grace to a rebellious creation to show them the way to be reconciled to the Father.

  67. Showed them that it was by grace, through faith in him.

  68. And the result is they spat on this offer of grace from God.

  69. They hated him.

  70. And it says, you know, this Greek word for hate is a very strong word indicating to detest, to abhor.

  71. And it even pictures like an ongoing persecution against someone that you hate.

  72. So, that's what we're talking about in this term.

  73. But he says, if they hate me, they're going to hate you.

  74. And he says why?

  75. In two ways.

  76. He says, for one, you don't belong to the world.

  77. And then secondly, not only do you not belong to the world, but you belong to me.

  78. And I chose you out of the world.

  79. And so, therefore, you will suffer.

  80. And he says, if you were of the world, if you belonged to it and not to me, the world would befriend you.

  81. The world would love you.

  82. It would treat you as one of its own.

  83. But I chose you out of the world, and therefore the world will hate you.

  84. And he gives you that illustration of a servant is not greater than his master.

  85. And he's saying, like, look, I'm your master.

  86. I'm your Lord.

  87. The one that you seek to be like.

  88. The one that I'm your example.

  89. You listen to me, and you follow me, and you believe the words that I teach.

  90. So, very clearly, he concludes that they're going to reject you because they've rejected me.

  91. And so, then he goes on to conclude at the end of that, in verse 21, a lot of people in this world think that they're okay with God, but they reject Christ.

  92. But, in reality, if you reject Christ, you're rejecting the Father.

  93. That's what he says here.

  94. Because they do not know him who sent me.

  95. In verse 21, Jesus says, whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  96. That's in chapter 14, 9.

  97. And he also says, in other places in the gospel, whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.

  98. So, all these other world religions who think that they know God, but yet reject the one he sent, do not know the Father.

  99. See, it's just a text to look at just to say that those of us who really belong to Christ,

  100. we're going to face some measure of hostility by the cosmos because we are not going along with it.

  101. We're pressing up against it.

  102. We're saying, no, life is about this.

  103. This is what matters and not this.

  104. And we're going to confront them with evil that is in this world and say,

  105. the only hope you have is to be reconciled to God through Christ.

  106. And so, the Apostle Paul in Colossians 1, 24, he talks about how he's sharing in the sufferings of Christ.

  107. Then he goes on, he says,

  108. In my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, the church.

  109. And what he means in this is not that Christ's sufferings were inadequate to achieve salvation for us,

  110. but what he is saying is there are many places in the world that don't know about the suffering of Christ.

  111. They haven't physically seen Jesus come and suffer on their behalf.

  112. So what he is saying is that through his life, through his body, through his suffering,

  113. he's going to betray to the world the sufferings of Christ.

  114. So believers going out into the world to preach the gospel,

  115. they are an extension of Christ and his sufferings.

  116. Joseph's son, who I recommend a book that he wrote as well,

  117. Joseph's son, he was a Baptist pastor in Romania in the 1980s,

  118. exiled by the government, imprisoned, tortured,

  119. interrogated over and over to try to get him to renounce the gospel.

  120. But as you'll read, like in Torture for Christ and a lot of these other books,

  121. they just embraced it and often converted many of the people that were interrogating them

  122. and many of the people that were torturing them out there.

  123. So they were just being tortured, preaching the gospel to them.

  124. But in regard to the verse in Colossians that we are filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions to reach the world,

  125. he said this, he says,

  126. I am an extension of Jesus Christ.

  127. When I was beaten in Romania, he suffered in my body.

  128. It is not my suffering.

  129. I only had the honor to share in his sufferings.

  130. Suffering and martyrdom have been sent as a part of God's plan.

  131. They are instruments by which he achieves his purpose in history

  132. and by which he will accomplish his final purpose with man.

  133. So I have the privilege, I'm not saying this is anything cool,

  134. but for some years I've had the privilege to know David Platt,

  135. who is the IMB president in our convention.

  136. And I challenge you to read his books.

  137. They are really challenging and life-giving, scriptural.

  138. And I remember him telling me one time that he was at this really large Southern Baptist church here in the South,

  139. and he was talking about persecution,

  140. talking about brothers and sisters around the world that he personally knew,

  141. not just that he read about,

  142. that were undergoing extreme persecution because of the name of Christ.

  143. And deep down really praying and hoping that they would just, you know,

  144. say, hey, let's go and suffer with them or let's be in prayer for them.

  145. Let's do whatever we can to, you know, be a part of what they're going through.

  146. He said, after it was over, like, we'll say he didn't even finish.

  147. He said he was sharing and the pastor walked up there and just like put his hand on his shoulder

  148. and just said, you know, thank you for sharing with us, brother David.

  149. But you know what this just makes me think of?

  150. This just makes me think that I'm so thankful that I live in America

  151. and so thankful that, you know, I have the freedom to come here and worship

  152. and that we live in a country that, you know, the red, white, and blue and, you know, eagle soaring, you know, like that.

  153. And David just thought, I thought that, you know, Lee Greenwood was going to walk out

  154. and sing God Bless the USA like right as I finish sharing.

  155. And what we have to understand is if we really are thankful for freedom we have,

  156. it's not going to turn to that kind of response.

  157. It's going to turn into, now let's go and suffer with them.

  158. Let's be a part and feel what they're going through.

  159. And, you know, we're going to read some things in the Scripture now that I hope are going to challenge you

  160. that I'm taking very seriously myself, like even asking, like in my own personal life, in my marriage,

  161. like what is this going to look like?

  162. Because it's not just going to be something I store up here.

  163. But what I want you to know is in the context of what we're going to be reading today,

  164. persecution was real.

  165. Like it was, this is going to happen if you follow me.

  166. And it also is real even today for thousands of our brothers and sisters across the world.

  167. And it's not okay for us, as Nathan alluded to earlier, to just say,

  168. well, I'm just glad I live in America. Wonderful.

  169. But you should know that Jesus demands the same type of loyalty, love, and devotion

  170. as He's asking for anyone who's wanted to risk their life.

  171. It's the same kind of sacrifice.

  172. And so there's three points we're going to walk through today,

  173. each one having a specific text, but we're mainly going to be in the Gospel of Luke.

  174. So turn over to Luke 14.

  175. Luke chapter 14 and go to verse 25.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  176. Luke 14, go to verse 25.

  177. And the first point I'm going to make are things that we must do as believers,

  178. even here in the West, in America.

  179. Number one, we must weigh the cost of following Christ.

  180. All right?

  181. We must weigh the cost of following Christ.

  182. Now, how many of you, when you gave your life to Christ,

  183. actually were challenged to think about that?

  184. Or was it just, you know, pray this prayer, come down the aisle, maybe be baptized,

  185. which in and of itself are not really bad things.

  186. But I really feel you see Jesus doing this a lot throughout His ministry.

  187. But as soon as people knew who He was, and He began becoming like too popular,

  188. He would say things to them that would make them just either split or stay with them.

  189. And I always, whenever I'm sharing the Gospel with someone, like, you know,

  190. I'll give you an example.

  191. There was a baseball player that I met with for probably two months straight every week,

  192. just going through the Gospel, talking about sin and God's holiness and the cross and faith

  193. to the point where He got it.

  194. Like, you know, I understand.

  195. Like, I get it.

  196. And I believe it.

  197. I believe it.

  198. And I said, well, great.

  199. And then I asked Him, what's holding you back from just following Christ now?

  200. And then I usually switch into a couple of weeks of trying to talk them out of following Jesus.

  201. And what I mean by that are passages like we're about to read.

  202. Luke 14, verse 25.

    Luke 14:25

  203. Now great crowds accompanied Him, and He turned and said to them,

  204. If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children

  205. and brothers and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

  206. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

  207. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost,

  208. whether he has enough to complete it?

  209. Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is not able to finish,

  210. all who see it begin to mock him, saying,

  211. This man began to build and was not able to finish.

  212. Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war,

  213. will not sit down and first deliberate whether he is able with 10,000

  214. to meet him who comes against him with 20,000?

  215. And if not, while the other is yet a great way off,

  216. he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

  217. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all he has cannot be My disciple.

  218. Very heavy words.

  219. And He said this when He was getting momentum.

  220. He was becoming cool.

  221. Crowds were following Him.

  222. And He kind of turns around and stared at this crowd who,

  223. in a way, is just kind of following Him around to see Him do tricks

  224. and thinks He's cool.

  225. They're intrigued.

  226. Indeed, He turns around and boldly says these heavy words to this crowd that is flirting with Him.

  227. And a few things you'll be able to draw out of this is,

  228. first of all, Christ says,

  229. I am more important.

  230. I am more worthy than your family is.

  231. That's harsh.

  232. Most people in this entire world,

  233. including those who are some of the most wicked, vile people ever,

  234. they still love their own family.

  235. Right?

  236. All of us love our family.

  237. And He says,

  238. I demand a superior love to all those who you call family

  239. and all earthly relationships that you have.

  240. And so, the word hate here is not the same word that's being used in John 15.

  241. It's used here in a comparative sense,

  242. not like in terms of malice or evil towards somebody,

  243. but it's used in a comparative sense to mean loving one thing or a person much less than another thing.

  244. So that love for this one thing,

  245. by comparison,

  246. looks like hate to the other thing.

  247. So, it's not saying have malice and evil in your heart towards your family.

  248. It's just saying,

  249. I demand a much greater love than your family.

  250. And He's saying,

  251. I cultivate such a deep love for Christ and a desire to know Him

  252. that all other loves in this world,

  253. by comparison,

  254. look like hate.

  255. And in a similar context,

  256. in Matthew chapter 10,

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  257. you don't have to turn there,

  258. but Matthew chapter 10, verse 34,

    Matthew 10:34

  259. Jesus gives us a clearer picture of what it means

  260. so I can actually hate your family in this way.

  261. He says this in verse 34,

  262. Listen to this.

  263. So,

  264. what He's saying here is like the true living presence of Christ in your life

  265. can cause relational division.

  266. It can cause,

  267. it can bring a sore to,

  268. it means by that,

  269. like it can cause some true division in your families.

  270. You can be rejected by your family.

  271. He's saying.

  272. In this context,

  273. it was real.

  274. You'd be kicked out of your family more than likely.

  275. Still is the case around the world.

  276. I would like to just give you an example of a friend of mine,

  277. a personal friend.

  278. Her name's Kara.

  279. She lives in Northern Ireland.

  280. She's a school teacher.

  281. And she grew up in,

  282. if you don't know about Northern Ireland,

  283. Northern Ireland is still under Great Britain.

  284. It's a part of the UK.

  285. It's not a part of the Republic of Ireland.

  286. Very strange,

  287. I know.

  288. Read the history.

  289. But,

  290. but there's a huge battle in the North over centuries of Protestant versus Catholic.

  291. Irish Catholic versus Brits and Scots who were there who are Protestant.

  292. And most of us,

  293. it's not about the gospel at all.

  294. It's just about nationalism,

  295. politics.

  296. But Kara grew up in a very devout Irish Catholic home.

  297. Her father,

  298. I'm pretty sure,

  299. was a part of a militia group in Northern Ireland.

  300. And she,

  301. she had a friend that was a part of one of the,

  302. the Baptist youth associations and was a believer.

  303. And she kind of,

  304. she says now,

  305. like I was tricked into going to this,

  306. you know,

  307. this summer camp.

  308. I thought it was just going to be like games and outdoor adventures,

  309. but they did do that.

  310. They talked about the gospel while they were there.

  311. And so in the process,

  312. Kira heard for the first time,

  313. like the gospel and believed and was completely just devastated by like the love of Christ for her and the forgiveness of sins.

  314. And as soon as she gave her life to Christ though,

  315. she had to think,

  316. wait,

  317. stop.

  318. If I do this,

  319. my family is probably going to hate me,

  320. especially my father,

  321. because I'll be saying like,

  322. I'm not going this way anymore.

  323. I'm going this way.

  324. I'm not for what the Roman church is doing here in Northern Ireland.

  325. And she was terrified.

  326. She was in tears.

  327. She just couldn't sleep for nights.

  328. She finally went back,

  329. back home,

  330. and was praying and working up the courage to at least tell her mom,

  331. finally told her mom what Christ has done.

  332. And her mom just broke down in tears and said,

  333. praise God.

  334. I only came to know Jesus two weeks ago.

  335. Like there's two of us in this family now.

  336. So they just began encouraging one another,

  337. praying.

  338. And they finally worked up the boldness to tell the father,

  339. the husband,

  340. and he was furious,

  341. furious.

  342. Lost,

  343. lost control,

  344. threw things around,

  345. just angry,

  346. saying like,

  347. you're betraying me,

  348. you're betraying your country,

  349. you're betraying like the cause here.

  350. And for a long time,

  351. just a lot of fighting between her mom and her father.

  352. And eventually her dad called her and the rest of the family to a meeting.

  353. And they were,

  354. she was pretty sure that her dad was going to say,

  355. we're getting a divorce and this family is done.

  356. So finally,

  357. they sat down together in the living room there in Belfast.

  358. And finally,

  359. she,

  360. he said,

  361. as much as it's killing me to say this,

  362. I see like the love of Christ in your life.

  363. And I want that for my life.

  364. And he gave his life to Christ.

  365. And that's a transformed family.

  366. But Kira had to weigh the costs of,

  367. of such a relationship with Jesus.

  368. And that's just an example in the West.

  369. But around the world,

  370. this is a true thing.

  371. This can happen.

  372. Your family can leave you.

  373. Your family could kill you,

  374. throw you out.

  375. And so,

  376. it is a,

  377. you know,

  378. we need to not just say,

  379. well,

  380. I'm glad that wouldn't happen to me.

  381. We have to weigh the costs as well.

  382. So,

  383. first we see that Christ demands a superior love to family.

  384. But secondly,

  385. in this text,

  386. we see that he desires a superior love to your family.

  387. Yourself.

  388. Even your own life,

  389. he says.

  390. You must love me more than your own life.

  391. He says that you must take up your cross.

  392. And later on,

  393. or earlier in Luke,

  394. so a few places I want you to turn,

  395. but,

  396. just flip earlier to Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  397. We're going to look at some things in Luke 9 together.

  398. Trying to keep you in the same book.

  399. But,

  400. Luke 9 verse 23,

    Luke 9:23

  401. similarly,

  402. Christ said this,

  403. And he said to all,

  404. if anyone would come after me,

  405. let him deny himself,

  406. take up his cross daily,

  407. and follow me.

  408. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  409. Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

  410. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world

  411. and loses or forfeits himself?

  412. So,

  413. this phrase,

  414. take up your cross,

  415. it is an invitation to come and die and suffer.

  416. In this context,

  417. it meant only death.

  418. It didn't mean jewelry.

  419. It didn't mean anything cool or culturally acceptable.

  420. It was a mockery,

  421. and it meant to come and die.

  422. So,

  423. if you're going to come with me,

  424. you must take up your cross.

  425. It's an invitation.

  426. And he also said,

  427. like,

  428. to deny yourself.

  429. And like,

  430. the phrasing of this word in the original language means

  431. to refuse to associate with.

  432. And like,

  433. you're refusing to associate with the things

  434. that you used to associate with

  435. before you knew Christ.

  436. To relinquish absolute control of your life.

  437. A willingness to follow Jesus,

  438. to serve him,

  439. to keep his commandments.

  440. And if need be,

  441. yeah,

  442. like to die for him.

  443. And so,

  444. I think,

  445. if I could paraphrase,

  446. saying this to us now,

  447. if Jesus would say something along this line,

  448. if you knew that coming after me to be my disciple

  449. would cost you your life,

  450. would you come anyway?

  451. It might not cost you your life,

  452. but if it did,

  453. would you still come?

  454. Are you that desperate for Jesus?

  455. Do you see how much you need him

  456. and how precious he is

  457. that you would be willing

  458. to lose your life?

  459. Are you willing to give up your life now

  460. for eternal life later?

  461. That's just what he's saying.

  462. It's not a,

  463. it's not cool theology.

  464. It's not to help you live a better life.

  465. It's a call to come and die.

  466. Like,

  467. to give your whole life,

  468. to surrender everything

  469. for Christ.

  470. And back in our text,

  471. you can stay in Luke 9,

  472. but back in Luke 14,

  473. he gives you an example.

  474. He said,

  475. two examples,

  476. one of building a tower

  477. and the other one of going to war

  478. to show like how you need to stop

  479. and think about

  480. what you're doing.

  481. So it didn't just,

  482. come on,

  483. Jesus wants you on his team

  484. and I'm not going to tell you

  485. how much that costs.

  486. He says,

  487. you need to stop

  488. and think about

  489. what it's going to cost you

  490. to follow me.

  491. Don't rush into this,

  492. in other words.

  493. Slow down.

  494. Which is so anti

  495. what most churches are doing today.

  496. Is that not true?

  497. It's quick,

  498. easy,

  499. believism

  500. that costs nothing.

  501. And he's saying,

  502. stop and consider.

  503. Some of you may

  504. remember me sharing

  505. about another friend of mine

  506. who's from Kyrgyzstan,

  507. which is over near China.

  508. His picture was out

  509. on the board out there.

  510. I don't know if you've ever seen it,

  511. but his name's Ossal.

  512. And he does ministry

  513. with the Underground Church

  514. in Central Asia.

  515. And he came up here.

  516. There's probably only a handful of you

  517. that were probably here back then,

  518. but probably,

  519. probably eight or nine years ago,

  520. he stood on this stage.

  521. He came here

  522. and shared with like

  523. probably 80 to 100

  524. college students.

  525. and he said,

  526. you know,

  527. in America

  528. it's fairly easy

  529. to come to be a Christian.

  530. But he said,

  531. in Central Asia,

  532. first you have to stop

  533. and consider

  534. if you're going to be a Christian,

  535. you have to be willing

  536. to be kicked out

  537. of your family.

  538. And then he said,

  539. after that,

  540. your community

  541. will ostracize you

  542. and ridicule you.

  543. then he said,

  544. the state

  545. will either not allow you

  546. to work,

  547. imprison you,

  548. or kill you.

  549. And he said,

  550. if someone

  551. that we've been sharing Christ with

  552. goes through all of that,

  553. still trusting Christ,

  554. we know that they're a true Christian.

  555. That's like what he said.

  556. And I was just so

  557. challenged by that.

  558. So some of you,

  559. like,

  560. don't take these stories

  561. as like,

  562. that just makes me feel shameful.

  563. That just makes me feel guilty.

  564. You can either allow it to be that

  565. or you can allow it to be

  566. a conviction

  567. that God is hitting you with

  568. and then just repent

  569. and strive to live

  570. as they live

  571. and have the faith

  572. that they have

  573. in the Savior.

  574. So use it as encouragement

  575. and not just,

  576. I'm terrible

  577. and I don't measure up.

  578. Use it as fuel

  579. to follow Christ.

  580. Then in case he missed anything,

  581. in our text back in Luke 14,

  582. he says,

  583. you know,

  584. relinquish all you have,

  585. everything.

  586. In case I left the stone unturned,

  587. if losing your life wasn't enough,

  588. like,

  589. relinquish all you have,

  590. everything,

  591. to follow Christ.

  592. So stop

  593. and weigh the cost.

  594. Weigh the cost

  595. of following Jesus.

  596. The same baseball player,

  597. after I kind of challenged him

  598. with this,

  599. these texts,

  600. a week later,

  601. he came back and says,

  602. you know,

  603. I want you to know

  604. that I really believe this,

  605. like,

  606. I really believe that,

  607. you know,

  608. Jesus is real

  609. and that I need him

  610. and all of this,

  611. but,

  612. you know,

  613. I mentioned this

  614. to my girlfriend

  615. that I'm living with right now

  616. and she doesn't think

  617. it's a great idea.

  618. It means we'd have to break up

  619. and I,

  620. you know,

  621. maybe one day,

  622. like,

  623. I'll come back around to this.

  624. It was heartbreaking,

  625. but what would I have done

  626. if I had just said,

  627. well,

  628. you can still be a Christian.

  629. You know,

  630. you can still,

  631. it's okay,

  632. Jesus is all right

  633. with your adultery.

  634. You know,

  635. he exposed the one thing

  636. that he cared more about

  637. than Christ.

  638. He didn't really see his need,

  639. just pretended that he did.

  640. And so,

  641. this goes to number two.

  642. Number two,

  643. we must weigh the urgency

  644. of following Christ.

  645. So weigh the cost,

  646. but weigh the urgency too.

  647. So it isn't like

  648. when we're sharing with people,

  649. it isn't,

  650. you know what,

  651. you've got the rest of your life

  652. to think about this.

  653. The Bible stresses urgency

  654. as well as weighing the cost.

  655. While you're in Luke 9,

  656. look down to verse 57.

  657. And these are another time

  658. when people were following

  659. around Jesus

  660. and this is something

  661. that he said

  662. to three different men.

  663. verse 57,

  664. chapter 9.

  665. As they were going

  666. along the road,

  667. someone said to him,

  668. I will follow you

  669. wherever you go.

  670. Bold statement.

  671. Verse 58.

  672. And Jesus said to him,

  673. foxes have holes

  674. and the birds of the air

  675. have nests,

  676. but the Son of Man

  677. has nowhere

  678. to lay his head.

  679. To another he said,

  680. follow me.

  681. But he said,

  682. Lord,

  683. let me first go

  684. and bury my father.

  685. And Jesus said to him,

  686. leave the dead

  687. to bury their own dead.

  688. But as for you,

  689. go and proclaim

  690. the kingdom of God.

  691. Yet another said,

  692. I will follow you,

  693. Lord,

  694. but let me first

  695. say farewell

  696. to those who are at home.

  697. Jesus said to him,

  698. no one

  699. who puts his hand

  700. to the plow

  701. and looks back

  702. is fit

  703. for the kingdom of God.

  704. Again,

  705. hard words.

  706. True for us

  707. as it was true for them

  708. and true for anyone else

  709. in the world.

  710. So,

  711. you may be like,

  712. man,

  713. Jesus is really strict here.

  714. He's being a little unreasonable.

  715. He could have all these

  716. extra followers,

  717. but he's,

  718. you know,

  719. being overboard.

  720. But a really close glance at

  721. context here

  722. will help you realize

  723. all he's really doing

  724. is just exposing

  725. that they don't really believe

  726. who he says he is.

  727. So,

  728. the first man,

  729. this same account

  730. is in Matthew.

  731. And Matthew calls

  732. this man a scribe.

  733. So this man,

  734. the first man here

  735. was a scribe.

  736. A man who apparently

  737. was used to

  738. a pretty comfortable lifestyle

  739. and making some decent money

  740. probably.

  741. And back then,

  742. as today,

  743. if you were low

  744. on the totem pole

  745. of social life,

  746. you would

  747. attach yourself

  748. to someone

  749. who was

  750. powerful,

  751. influential,

  752. and as they rose,

  753. you went with them.

  754. Same kind of thinking

  755. even today.

  756. So,

  757. he wanted to advance

  758. his position

  759. in society.

  760. And Jesus,

  761. you know,

  762. again,

  763. cut straight to the point

  764. and informed this man,

  765. if you're looking

  766. for comfort,

  767. if you're looking

  768. for riches,

  769. for great influence

  770. in an early way,

  771. worldly way,

  772. I'm the wrong guy.

  773. I'm not your guy.

  774. I don't even have

  775. anywhere to lay my head.

  776. I don't have a mansion

  777. and tons of cars

  778. and all those other

  779. comforts of life.

  780. So the path

  781. of true discipleship

  782. is not found

  783. in comfort

  784. or ease,

  785. but rather

  786. in a hard life

  787. that brings suffering

  788. and persecution.

  789. And he knew

  790. this man

  791. was not in it

  792. for him.

  793. He wanted

  794. something else

  795. out of him.

  796. So this man

  797. considered those things

  798. more important

  799. than following

  800. the king of kings.

  801. The second man

  802. said,

  803. let me go

  804. and bury my father first.

  805. So again,

  806. sounds honorable,

  807. right?

  808. So,

  809. but just again,

  810. a studying of

  811. the context here.

  812. It didn't necessarily

  813. mean

  814. that his father

  815. was dead.

  816. this was a

  817. cultural way

  818. of saying,

  819. let me wait

  820. for my inheritance

  821. first.

  822. Let me wait

  823. until my father dies

  824. and then let me

  825. get my inheritance

  826. and then I'll

  827. come follow you.

  828. And so,

  829. that's why

  830. Jesus' phrase,

  831. let the dead

  832. bury their own.

  833. Like,

  834. look,

  835. what I'm telling

  836. you to do

  837. overrides

  838. that importance

  839. of waiting

  840. for your father

  841. to die.

  842. I'm telling you

  843. the most important

  844. thing for you

  845. to do

  846. is to go

  847. and proclaim

  848. the kingdom

  849. of God.

  850. So,

  851. again,

  852. this man

  853. desired money

  854. and title

  855. and inheritance

  856. more than

  857. following the

  858. Messiah.

  859. And then thirdly,

  860. this is the most

  861. puzzling one

  862. to me,

  863. at least.

  864. The man says,

  865. simply,

  866. let me say goodbye

  867. to my family

  868. and then I'll

  869. come follow you.

  870. Do you think

  871. that is a

  872. undesirable,

  873. like a

  874. unrealistic request?

  875. I don't.

  876. But,

  877. again,

  878. Jesus sees

  879. something that

  880. we don't see

  881. here.

  882. And I want

  883. you to,

  884. again,

  885. hold your

  886. hand on Luke,

  887. don't move it,

  888. but turn to

  889. 1 Kings.

  890. I'll get some

  891. Old Testament

  892. action today.

  893. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  894. chapter 19.

  895. This is the

  896. story of

  897. Elisha

  898. and Elijah,

  899. the two

  900. prophets of

  901. ancient Israel

  902. in the early

  903. days of the

  904. nation.

  905. And this is

  906. when Elijah

  907. is getting

  908. ready to

  909. pass on

  910. being the

  911. prophet to

  912. Elisha.

  913. And

  914. it's an

  915. interaction that

  916. takes place.

  917. And just

  918. think about

  919. the similarities

  920. between this

  921. third man that

  922. Jesus is talking

  923. to and what

  924. happens right

  925. here.

  926. verse 19.

  927. So,

  928. talking about

  929. Elijah.

  930. So he

  931. departed from

  932. there and

  933. found Elisha,

  934. the son of

  935. Japhat,

  936. who was

  937. plowing with

  938. twelve yoke of

  939. oxen in front

  940. of him.

  941. And he was

  942. with the

  943. twelve.

  944. And Elijah

  945. passed by him

  946. and cast his

  947. cloak upon

  948. him.

  949. Kind of a

  950. symbolic act

  951. of passing

  952. it on.

  953. And he

  954. left the

  955. oxen and

  956. ran after

  957. Elijah.

  958. And listen

  959. to this.

  960. Let me

  961. kiss my

  962. father and

  963. my mother

  964. and then

  965. I'll follow

  966. you.

  967. Sound

  968. familiar?

  969. And he

  970. said to

  971. him,

  972. Go back

  973. again,

  974. for what

  975. have I

  976. done to

  977. you?

  978. And he

  979. returned from

  980. following him

  981. and took

  982. the yoke of

  983. oxen and

  984. sacrificed

  985. them and

  986. boiled their

  987. flesh with

  988. the yokes of

  989. oxen and

  990. gave it to

  991. the people and

  992. they ate.

  993. Then he

  994. arose and

  995. went after

  996. Elijah and

  997. assisted him.

  998. All right.

  999. Now,

  1000. what's

  1001. different about

  1002. Elisha and

  1003. this third

  1004. man that

  1005. Jesus is

  1006. talking to?

  1007. A big

  1008. difference.

  1009. Elijah did

  1010. go home.

  1011. He says

  1012. farewell to

  1013. his family.

  1014. But then,

  1015. listen to this,

  1016. he sacrifices

  1017. the yoke of

  1018. oxen to

  1019. the Lord.

  1020. And these

  1021. are all

  1022. symbolic acts

  1023. of severing

  1024. himself from

  1025. an old way

  1026. of life to

  1027. start a new

  1028. one.

  1029. He ended

  1030. his livelihood

  1031. in order to

  1032. say, like,

  1033. I'm leaving

  1034. this and I'm

  1035. moving to

  1036. this.

  1037. He had

  1038. nothing to

  1039. go back

  1040. to.

  1041. So he

  1042. just momentarily

  1043. went back

  1044. to cut old

  1045. ties.

  1046. However,

  1047. Jesus clearly

  1048. sees that

  1049. this man

  1050. loves his

  1051. family so

  1052. much that

  1053. though he

  1054. may follow

  1055. him for a

  1056. time, he's

  1057. always going

  1058. to be looking

  1059. back over

  1060. his shoulder

  1061. saying, like,

  1062. I've got to

  1063. go back.

  1064. I can't follow

  1065. you anymore.

  1066. I've got to

  1067. go and be

  1068. with my

  1069. family.

  1070. And, again,

  1071. a superior

  1072. love to

  1073. family is

  1074. what Christ

  1075. calls us

  1076. for.

  1077. He makes

  1078. that analogy

  1079. that, you

  1080. know, most

  1081. of us are

  1082. not familiar

  1083. with plowing

  1084. at all, but

  1085. if you're not

  1086. looking forward,

  1087. you can't

  1088. plow a

  1089. straight line.

  1090. And so he's

  1091. saying, if you're

  1092. always looking

  1093. back, you're

  1094. just going to

  1095. go all over

  1096. the place.

  1097. And so he

  1098. turns this

  1099. man away.

  1100. And Luke,

  1101. always looking

  1102. over his

  1103. shoulder, and

  1104. eventually, where

  1105. he would walk

  1106. away from

  1107. Jesus,

  1108. Jesus.

  1109. So, there

  1110. is urgency

  1111. in following

  1112. Jesus.

  1113. I've used

  1114. this analogy

  1115. before, but

  1116. years ago, when

  1117. I was waiting

  1118. for my lung

  1119. transplant, I

  1120. was getting

  1121. sick and

  1122. sicker and

  1123. sicker, and

  1124. the surgeons

  1125. told me

  1126. basically this,

  1127. look, you're

  1128. very sick.

  1129. You have

  1130. 20% of your

  1131. lung function

  1132. going this

  1133. way.

  1134. You're not

  1135. going to make

  1136. it much

  1137. longer.

  1138. You really

  1139. need to

  1140. get a

  1141. transplant.

  1142. There's

  1143. urgency here.

  1144. You need to

  1145. get this

  1146. procedure done.

  1147. And then he

  1148. said, but

  1149. this is a

  1150. huge decision.

  1151. A lot

  1152. goes into

  1153. this.

  1154. There's no

  1155. guarantee that

  1156. you'll even

  1157. survive the

  1158. surgery or

  1159. the recovery.

  1160. You have to

  1161. think about

  1162. this, though.

  1163. You have to

  1164. weigh the

  1165. cost of what

  1166. you're about

  1167. to do.

  1168. So there was

  1169. urgency, but

  1170. there was also

  1171. weigh the cost,

  1172. like in that

  1173. same decision.

  1174. And that's

  1175. what it is.

  1176. Like, are we

  1177. willing to

  1178. say, whatever

  1179. it is, like

  1180. it's urgent, I'm

  1181. going to deal

  1182. with this in my

  1183. life.

  1184. I'm going to

  1185. follow Christ,

  1186. whatever it

  1187. costs.

  1188. Thirdly, this is

  1189. the final point.

  1190. We must weigh

  1191. the worthiness of

  1192. Christ.

  1193. Christ.

  1194. And last

  1195. thing I want

  1196. you to turn

  1197. to, but look

  1198. at Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1199. chapter 10.

  1200. Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  1201. chapter 10.

  1202. So, the

  1203. reality is we

  1204. feel like we're

  1205. losing and

  1206. sacrificing so

  1207. much for Jesus,

  1208. but in reality

  1209. we are not.

  1210. Sins forgiven,

  1211. rebellion against

  1212. God, pardoned,

  1213. reconciled to

  1214. God, spared

  1215. His judgment,

  1216. given His

  1217. fellowship, given

  1218. a relationship

  1219. with the

  1220. Creator, an

  1221. eternal life to

  1222. come, eternal

  1223. joy in Christ

  1224. to come.

  1225. If we really

  1226. understood what

  1227. we've gained in

  1228. Christ, we would

  1229. never be able to

  1230. say we sacrificed

  1231. anything, because

  1232. it would be that

  1233. much greater.

  1234. It would be

  1235. infinitely greater

  1236. than anything we

  1237. feel that we've

  1238. lost here.

  1239. only Christ is

  1240. worthy of that.

  1241. So, listen to

  1242. this.

  1243. This is one of

  1244. those moments

  1245. when the

  1246. disciples are

  1247. being very, you

  1248. know, self-pity,

  1249. like, well, we've

  1250. done so much for

  1251. you.

  1252. And Luke, or

  1253. excuse me, Mark

    Mark 10:26

  1254. 10, verse 26,

  1255. says, they were

  1256. exceedingly

  1257. astonished and

  1258. said to Jesus,

  1259. who then can be

  1260. saved?

  1261. And Jesus

  1262. looked at them

  1263. and said,

  1264. with man it is

  1265. impossible, but

  1266. not with God.

  1267. For all things

  1268. are possible

  1269. with God.

  1270. This is after he

  1271. turned that man

  1272. away.

  1273. Peter, of course

  1274. it would be

  1275. Peter, right?

  1276. Peter began to

  1277. say to him,

  1278. see, we have

  1279. left everything

  1280. and followed

  1281. you.

  1282. Like, we've

  1283. sacrificed

  1284. everything, Lord.

  1285. And Jesus

  1286. said to him,

  1287. truly, I say

  1288. to you, there

  1289. is no one who

  1290. has left house,

  1291. our brothers,

  1292. our sisters,

  1293. our mother,

  1294. our father,

  1295. our children,

  1296. our lands,

  1297. for the sake,

  1298. for my sake,

  1299. and for the

  1300. gospel.

  1301. Who will not

  1302. receive a hundred

  1303. fold now in

  1304. this life,

  1305. houses,

  1306. brothers and

  1307. sisters,

  1308. mothers,

  1309. children and

  1310. lands,

  1311. with persecutions

  1312. in the age to

  1313. come, eternal

  1314. life.

  1315. So, his

  1316. response seems

  1317. to indicate,

  1318. this is how I'm

  1319. going to rule out

  1320. this idea that

  1321. you're losing

  1322. something,

  1323. that you've

  1324. sacrificed

  1325. something.

  1326. He's saying

  1327. you're denying

  1328. yourself like

  1329. little finite

  1330. things here in

  1331. order to gain

  1332. something that is

  1333. far greater.

  1334. And the fact

  1335. that you know

  1336. me and that

  1337. you have

  1338. eternal life

  1339. is going to

  1340. be so great,

  1341. so glorious,

  1342. that you

  1343. would not even

  1344. begin to ever

  1345. say, I

  1346. sacrifice to

  1347. follow Jesus.

  1348. Surely what he

  1349. means is that he

  1350. himself makes

  1351. up infinite

  1352. times over for

  1353. every sacrifice.

  1354. sacrifice.

  1355. Jesus wants

  1356. us to think

  1357. about sacrifice

  1358. in a way that

  1359. rules out self-pity.

  1360. Deny yourself

  1361. garbage here so

  1362. you could have

  1363. gold later.

  1364. That's like what

  1365. he's almost

  1366. saying.

  1367. Don't throw

  1368. away your life

  1369. over things that

  1370. don't matter and

  1371. perish.

  1372. So, I wanted

  1373. to read this

  1374. in closing,

  1375. but this is

  1376. an Iranian

  1377. pastor who

  1378. converted to

  1379. Christianity

  1380. from Islam

  1381. and he

  1382. has a church

  1383. in Amsterdam

  1384. now and

  1385. predominantly

  1386. made up of

  1387. people from

  1388. Africa and

  1389. Asia and

  1390. Amsterdam.

  1391. And listen to

  1392. this, his

  1393. main goal is

  1394. to train

  1395. missionaries to

  1396. reach the

  1397. West, to

  1398. come to

  1399. America and

  1400. to come to

  1401. the places

  1402. where supposedly

  1403. there's a lot

  1404. of Christians

  1405. and really to

  1406. say, look,

  1407. we're bringing

  1408. the gospel to

  1409. you guys.

  1410. So, this

  1411. is what he

  1412. was asked

  1413. the question,

  1414. why are so

  1415. many American

  1416. churches not

  1417. really doing

  1418. well?

  1419. Why are we

  1420. failing?

  1421. Why are we

  1422. not really

  1423. growing?

  1424. Why are we

  1425. stagnant?

  1426. And he

  1427. said a few

  1428. things.

  1429. This is what

  1430. he said.

  1431. Number one,

  1432. we must

  1433. embrace the

  1434. miraculous.

  1435. Because America

  1436. has so many

  1437. comforts,

  1438. people don't

  1439. see the

  1440. need for

  1441. God to

  1442. act in

  1443. the miraculous

  1444. way.

  1445. In Africa

  1446. and other

  1447. places where

  1448. there are

  1449. few hospitals

  1450. and churches

  1451. for healing,

  1452. but the

  1453. truth is that

  1454. we need the

  1455. Holy Spirit

  1456. like never

  1457. before.

  1458. We can't

  1459. just have

  1460. great buildings

  1461. and wonderful

  1462. social gatherings

  1463. and miss the

  1464. Holy Spirit.

  1465. A church

  1466. without the

  1467. Spirit's power

  1468. will not

  1469. save the

  1470. world.

  1471. number two,

  1472. this is

  1473. convicting.

  1474. We must

  1475. reject Hollywood

  1476. tendencies.

  1477. Some churches

  1478. in the United

  1479. States look

  1480. more like

  1481. they're sponsoring

  1482. fashion shows

  1483. or TV

  1484. programs.

  1485. This is a

  1486. bad example

  1487. to churches

  1488. in other

  1489. nations.

  1490. And I know

  1491. that some

  1492. foreign churches

  1493. are now copying

  1494. this flashy

  1495. American style.

  1496. For example,

  1497. in some

  1498. African countries,

  1499. some pastors

  1500. have started

  1501. imitating this

  1502. Hollywood style

  1503. by manipulating

  1504. people to

  1505. get money.

  1506. I was

  1507. shocked to

  1508. hear that

  1509. one pastor

  1510. in a

  1511. developing

  1512. country

  1513. recently

  1514. began

  1515. dealing

  1516. in a

  1517. stolen

  1518. luxury

  1519. car so

  1520. he can

  1521. make

  1522. money

  1523. for

  1524. himself

  1525. and

  1526. appear

  1527. successful.

  1528. Number

  1529. three,

  1530. we must

  1531. forsake

  1532. our pride.

  1533. Outsiders

  1534. do not

  1535. read our

  1536. doctrines

  1537. or our

  1538. bulletin

  1539. boards.

  1540. They read

  1541. our character

  1542. and our

  1543. lives.

  1544. When people

  1545. see that

  1546. we live

  1547. a dual

  1548. life,

  1549. why would

  1550. they bother

  1551. to be a

  1552. part of

  1553. the church?

  1554. And this

  1555. is how

  1556. he sums

  1557. it up.

  1558. I wish

  1559. that my

  1560. American

  1561. brothers and

  1562. sisters

  1563. realized how

  1564. hurtful it

  1565. is to the

  1566. cause of

  1567. Christ when

  1568. they focus

  1569. so much

  1570. on material

  1571. things.

  1572. I am

  1573. not against

  1574. beauty of

  1575. things and

  1576. having things,

  1577. but why does

  1578. a preacher

  1579. need a

  1580. limousine

  1581. instead of a

  1582. normal car?

  1583. must

  1584. preachers

  1585. have a

  1586. huge

  1587. entourage

  1588. in order

  1589. to enter

  1590. conferences

  1591. and churches?

  1592. God is

  1593. fed up

  1594. with all

  1595. these

  1596. things.

  1597. We cannot

  1598. transform

  1599. others if

  1600. we

  1601. ourselves

  1602. are not

  1603. transformed.

  1604. So,

  1605. for those

  1606. of you

  1607. here who

  1608. are without

  1609. Christ,

  1610. know that

  1611. the offer

  1612. of salvation

  1613. is completely

  1614. a gift

  1615. of God's

  1616. grace in

  1617. Christ.

  1618. So come

  1619. to him,

  1620. surrender

  1621. your life

  1622. to him,

  1623. but know

  1624. it's going

  1625. to cost

  1626. you.

  1627. If you

  1628. really are

  1629. following

  1630. him,

  1631. as we

  1632. read,

  1633. all those

  1634. who desire

  1635. to live a

  1636. godly life

  1637. in Christ

  1638. Jesus will

  1639. be persecuted.

  1640. And for

  1641. believers,

  1642. this was

  1643. something that

  1644. I've thought

  1645. about over

  1646. the years.

  1647. A long

  1648. time ago,

  1649. an abbot,

  1650. or kind

  1651. of like a

  1652. monk,

  1653. was asked,

  1654. you know,

  1655. after your

  1656. life's over,

  1657. like,

  1658. what if you

  1659. realized that

  1660. there really

  1661. was no

  1662. God?

  1663. Like,

  1664. you surrendered

  1665. your whole

  1666. life to

  1667. being in

  1668. a monastery

  1669. to have

  1670. a quiet

  1671. life?

  1672. What if

  1673. you realized

  1674. at the

  1675. very end

  1676. there was

  1677. no God?

  1678. Would you

  1679. consider it

  1680. to be like

  1681. a wasted

  1682. life?

  1683. And the

  1684. abbot replied

  1685. this,

  1686. holiness and

  1687. silence are

  1688. beautiful in

  1689. themselves,

  1690. even without

  1691. the promise

  1692. of reward.

  1693. I still

  1694. would have

  1695. used my

  1696. life the

  1697. same way.

  1698. Like,

  1699. meaning,

  1700. I've

  1701. lived a

  1702. life of

  1703. peace and

  1704. solitude

  1705. and beauty

  1706. and even

  1707. if this

  1708. turned out

  1709. to be a

  1710. hoax,

  1711. I would

  1712. say it

  1713. was a

  1714. good life.

  1715. How many

  1716. of you

  1717. could say

  1718. that?

  1719. But here's

  1720. the staggering

  1721. difference,

  1722. very different

  1723. from what

  1724. the apostle

  1725. Paul said.

  1726. He's

  1727. basically

  1728. talking about

  1729. the resurrection

  1730. in 1 Corinthians

  1731. 15.

  1732. This is what

  1733. he said.

  1734. This is how

  1735. different it is

  1736. from what the

  1737. abbot said.

  1738. If in

  1739. Christ we

  1740. have only

  1741. hoped in

  1742. this life,

  1743. we above

  1744. all people

  1745. are to be

  1746. most pitied.

  1747. Like,

  1748. we have

  1749. thrown

  1750. ourselves to

  1751. slaughter and

  1752. torture for

  1753. Christ.

  1754. Pity us if

  1755. this wasn't

  1756. true.

  1757. Not,

  1758. well,

  1759. it was a

  1760. good life

  1761. anyway.

  1762. And I

  1763. hope that

  1764. all of us,

  1765. you and

  1766. me,

  1767. can say,

  1768. like,

  1769. I really

  1770. sacrificed to

  1771. follow Christ.

  1772. And then in

  1773. doing so,

  1774. you're

  1775. enlightened and

  1776. you see,

  1777. like,

  1778. I really

  1779. didn't

  1780. sacrifice

  1781. anything

  1782. because of

  1783. how much

  1784. I've

  1785. gained

  1786. in Christ.

  1787. Join me

  1788. in prayer.
