  1. Well read and treasured in your heart, and turn with me to Psalm 115.

  2. Before I read, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  3. It was written for His glory and our good.

  4. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  5. Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name,

  6. give glory for the sake of Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness.

  7. Why should the nations say, where is their God?

  8. Our God is in the heavens. He does all that He pleases.

  9. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

  10. They have mouths, but do not speak, eyes, but do not see.

  11. They have ears, but do not hear, noses, but do not smell.

  12. They have hands, but do not feel.

  13. They have feet, but do not walk.

  14. And they do not make a sound in their throat.

  15. Those who make them become like them.

  16. So do all who trust in them.

  17. O Israel, trust in the Lord.

  18. He is their help and their shield.

  19. O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord.

  20. He is their help and their shield.

  21. You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord.

  22. He is their help and their shield.

  23. The Lord has remembered us.

  24. He will bless us.

  25. He will bless the house of Israel.

  26. He will bless the house of Aaron.

  27. He will bless those who fear the Lord, both the small and the great.

  28. May the Lord give you increase, you and your children.

  29. May you be blessed by the Lord who made heaven and earth.

  30. The heavens are the Lord's heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

  31. The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence.

  32. But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

  33. Praise the Lord.

  34. This is one of the psalms sung by the Jews at the feast of the Passover.

  35. Which likely means that it was sung by our Lord on the night that he was betrayed and arrested.

  36. It is not certain who or at what time this psalm was penned.

  37. And therefore I'll refer to its writer as the psalmist from here on.

  38. But we can, however, see from its contents that the occasion for its writing is summed up in the question of verse 2.

  39. Why should the nation say, where is their God?

  40. It would seem that God's people have once again found themselves afflicted.

  41. And the psalmist implores God to make himself known for the sake of his name.

  42. In the midst of their suffering, whatever that was, whatever the occasion was.

  43. The psalmist does not wish that God's people would be given glory.

  44. That their name would be made great.

  45. But that God would be given glory.

  46. That he would be beheld as the loving and faithful God that he is.

  47. The psalmist writes in verse 1,

  48. Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.

  49. The psalmist pleads with God to act.

  50. Not on any merit of God's people as they have none.

  51. But rather on the merit of God's character and zeal for his own glory.

  52. John Calvin in writing concerning verse 1 of Psalm 115 said,

  53. This is a point to which we ought carefully to attend.

  54. That altogether, unworthy as we are of God's regard,

  55. we may cherish the hope of being saved by him.

  56. From the respect that he has for the glory of his name.

  57. And from his having adopted us on condition of never forsaking us.

  58. The psalmist answers the question,

  59. Where is there God?

  60. With confident and holy derision in verse 3.

  61. He writes,

  62. Our God is in the heavens.

  63. He does all that he pleases.

  64. God is in a place where he cannot be seen.

  65. But all of his loving kindness and faithfulness toward mankind can be seen.

  66. And he does all that he pleases.

  67. What an astounding statement that is.

  68. What a limitless statement.

  69. Our God does all that he pleases.

  70. If God wills that something should happen, it happens.

  71. If he does not intend for something to happen, it will not happen.

  72. Beloved, this reality is such a comfort to the afflicted church.

  73. The church militant.

  74. Nothing happens apart from God's providence.

  75. Nothing.

  76. We worship the one true and living God.

  77. There are no other gods.

  78. And the psalmist is going to show us the futility of worshiping any other than our God.

  79. But before we consider verses 4 and following,

  80. I want to show you something about the structure of Psalm 115.

  81. We've looked at verses 1 through 3 in brief.

  82. Verse 1.

  83. The psalmist makes an appeal for God himself to glorify himself.

  84. For him to act in a way that brings his name honor.

  85. In verse 2, we see this expression of wickedness.

  86. The wicked, the nations say, where is your God?

  87. And in verse 3, we see a declaration of God's place, where he is.

  88. He's in the heavens and of his power.

  89. He's sovereign.

  90. He does whatever he pleases.

  91. Now look at verses 16, 17, and 18.

  92. We find these three points made in verses 1, 2, and 3 in reverse in verses 16, 17, and 18

  93. with some small variations.

  94. In verse 16, so track me backwards,

  95. we see a declaration of God's place.

  96. The heavens are God's heavens.

  97. With the addition of man's place, right?

  98. It's granted to him by God.

  99. So man is in the earth.

  100. The earth has been given to man.

  101. In verse 17, we see.

  102. In verse 2, the wicked ask this wicked question.

  103. Here we see that they do not worship God at all.

  104. In no way at all do they worship God.

  105. And then verse 18, in verse 1,

  106. there is an appeal for God to glorify himself.

  107. But in verse 18, we see that God's people are meant to,

  108. are created to, ascribe glory to God in the praise of him.

  109. So you see how it's reflexive in that way.

  110. So in verses 1 through 3, we see the sovereignty of God

  111. bringing about the praise of his name.

  112. And in verses 16 through 18, we see, as God's people,

  113. our image-bearing responsibility to do the same.

  114. There is much talk today about finding God's purpose for your life.

  115. Here it is in this text.

  116. That we would bring him great glory.

  117. That we would leverage all that we have and do

  118. in order to show God more as he is.

  119. You are never more as God intended you to be

  120. than when you are working in his strength

  121. for the praise of his name.

  122. You are never further from God's intention for you

  123. when you are worshiping lesser things.

  124. These two sets of three verses each serve as an inclusion.

  125. There's a literary term for you today.

  126. As an inclusion bookends for verses 4 through 15.

  127. And they bookend a juxtaposition between the worship of false gods

  128. and the strong confidence that we can have

  129. in worshiping the one true and living God.

  130. So, this has been my prayer for you this morning.

  131. If you are of the nations,

  132. one of those who do not belong to God,

  133. who worship the creation rather than the creator,

  134. my prayer for you is that you will behold

  135. the steadfast love and faithfulness of God this morning

  136. toward his people,

  137. and that you will be moved to place saving faith

  138. in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  139. If you are of God's people,

  140. if you have placed saving faith

  141. in the person and work of Jesus Christ,

  142. my prayer for you is that you will behold

  143. the steadfast love and faithfulness of God

  144. afresh this morning,

  145. and that he will show you how inclined you still are

  146. to worship at the feet of the creation.

  147. Having been adopted into the family of God,

  148. how likely you are to turn back from him

  149. to lesser forms of worship.

  150. So, in order to do that,

  151. in two points,

  152. number one, verses four through 15,

  153. the futility of false gods,

  154. and number two,

  155. the glory of the one true and living God.

  156. So, number one,

  157. the futility or uselessness of false gods.

  158. Look what the psalmist says about them.

  159. Their idols, the nation's idols,

  160. are silver and gold,

  161. the work of human hands.

  162. Idols are created things.

  163. The psalmist tells us in verse four,

  164. they are the work of human hands.

  165. They are made of precious metals in this case,

  166. the specific idols he's referring to,

  167. but they are made all the same.

  168. And he goes on and he elaborates this point

  169. with accusations of their uselessness.

  170. Verse five, beginning,

  171. they have mouths,

  172. but they do not speak.

  173. These graven images have the image of a mouth,

  174. but they say nothing.

  175. Genesis chapter one tells of God creating the world

  176. with mighty words.

  177. But idols are dumb.

  178. They can utter nothing.

  179. They cannot speak words of promise

  180. or encouragement or warning.

  181. They have, verse five,

  182. eyes, but do not see.

  183. When Hagar is told by an angel of the Lord

  184. that she will bear a son,

  185. it is recorded in Genesis 16, 13.

  186. So she called the name of the Lord

  187. who spoke to her.

  188. You are a God of seeing.

  189. For she said,

  190. truly here I have seen him

  191. who looks after me,

  192. who is caring for us

  193. as he observes us

  194. and then interacts with us.

  195. It is a contradiction altogether

  196. to have a God who cannot see.

  197. Verse six,

  198. they have ears,

  199. but they do not hear.

  200. There is no sense

  201. in offering up prayers

  202. to a God that cannot hear your prayers.

  203. Exodus 2, 24

  204. records that God heard their groaning

  205. and God remembered His covenant

  206. with Abraham, with Isaac,

  207. and with Jacob.

  208. Our God is a God who hears.

  209. Idols hear nothing.

  210. On in verse six further,

  211. they have noses,

  212. but do not smell.

  213. This is likely a reference

  214. to God's acceptance of sacrifice.

  215. Genesis 8, 21 records,

  216. verse 7,

  217. and when the Lord smelled

  218. the pleasing aroma

  219. of the sacrifice,

  220. the Lord said in His heart,

  221. I will never again curse the ground

  222. because of man,

  223. for the intention of man's heart

  224. is evil from his youth.

  225. Neither will I again

  226. strike down every living creature

  227. as I have done.

  228. A God who cannot smell

  229. cannot receive

  230. an acceptable sacrifice.

  231. Verse 7,

  232. they have hands,

  233. but do not feel.

  234. False gods cannot sympathize

  235. with our weakness,

  236. nor can they bring us comfort.

  237. The writer of Hebrews,

  238. in Hebrews 4, 15 says,

  239. for we do not have a high priest

  240. who is unable to sympathize

  241. with our weaknesses,

  242. but one who in every respect

  243. has been tempted as we are,

  244. yet without sin.

  245. Our God became a man

  246. in order that He might

  247. sympathize with us,

  248. understand our suffering,

  249. and come to us in it.

  250. Further in verse 7,

  251. they have feet,

  252. but they do not walk.

  253. False gods have no activity.

  254. They just sit.

  255. The one true and living God

  256. does all that He pleases.

  257. But false gods do nothing.

  258. Isaiah 41, 7,

  259. the craftsman strengthens

  260. the goldsmith,

  261. and he who smooths

  262. with the hammer,

  263. him who strikes the anvil,

  264. saying of the soldering,

  265. it is good,

  266. and they strengthen it

  267. with nails

  268. so that it cannot be moved.

  269. The idol gets nailed down

  270. to the floor

  271. so it cannot be taken.

  272. They have feet,

  273. but they do not walk,

  274. and they do not make a sound.

  275. In their throat.

  276. More literally, I think,

  277. they do not muse.

  278. They do not have thought.

  279. False gods are lifeless

  280. and useless.

  281. This is a comprehensive charge list.

  282. There are seven charges

  283. that are being made here.

  284. Idols are utterly useless,

  285. useless,

  286. and the worship of them

  287. is an exercise

  288. in futility.

  289. In studying these charges

  290. against false gods,

  291. my mind was drawn

  292. to the taunting words

  293. of Elijah

  294. to the prophets of Baal.

  295. You may recall

  296. 1 Kings 18, 27

  297. from our reading together

  298. not too long ago.

  299. Elijah says,

  300. I'm sorry,

  301. that's in the future.

  302. It's been one of those weeks.

  303. He says to the prophets of Baal,

  304. cry aloud,

  305. for he is a God.

  306. Either he is musing,

  307. or he is relieving himself,

  308. or he is on a journey,

  309. or perhaps he is asleep

  310. and must be awakened.

  311. False gods have nothing

  312. to offer us.

  313. But the psalmist continues

  314. by telling us in verse 8,

  315. those who make them

  316. become like them.

  317. So do all who trust in them.

  318. This is the one-two punch

  319. of the point

  320. that the psalmist

  321. is trying to make

  322. about false gods.

  323. Let me elaborate on that

  324. a bit more.

  325. There's lots of this kind of language

  326. in the Scripture

  327. about having eyes

  328. but not seeing,

  329. and ears but not hearing.

  330. Let me give you a couple

  331. of examples of this.

  332. Jeremiah 5,

  333. 21-24.

  334. God says,

  335. Hear this,

  336. O foolish and senseless people,

  337. who have eyes

  338. but see not,

  339. who have ears

  340. but hear not.

  341. Do you not fear me,

  342. declares the Lord?

  343. Do you not tremble before me?

  344. I place the sands

  345. as the boundary of the sea,

  346. a perpetual barrier

  347. that it cannot pass.

  348. Though the waves toss,

  349. they cannot prevail.

  350. Though they roar,

  351. they cannot pass over it.

  352. But this people

  353. has a stubborn

  354. and rebellious heart.

  355. They have turned aside

  356. and gone away.

  357. They do not say

  358. in their hearts,

  359. Let us fear the Lord our God

  360. who gives the rain

  361. in its season,

  362. the autumn rain

  363. and the spring rain,

  364. and keeps for us

  365. the weeks appointed

  366. for the harvest.

  367. But God says

  368. to people of Israel,

  369. as rebellious people of Israel,

  370. You have failed to see me

  371. as the creator,

  372. as the emphasis

  373. that He's making

  374. throughout this passage

  375. in Jeremiah.

  376. Who has held the sea

  377. in its boundaries?

  378. Who set the shore?

  379. And no matter how hard

  380. the sea tries,

  381. it cannot come past

  382. the place

  383. I have told it.

  384. I give the rain

  385. in its season,

  386. the autumn and the spring.

  387. I schedule out

  388. when the harvest

  389. will happen.

  390. Verse 21 says,

  391. You are a foolish

  392. and senseless people.

  393. Have eyes,

  394. but do not see.

  395. Have ears,

  396. but hear not.

  397. You are like

  398. the very things

  399. that you worship.

  400. Another place,

  401. Ezekiel 12, 2.

  402. Son of man,

  403. you dwell in the midst

  404. of a rebellious house,

  405. who have eyes to see,

  406. but see not,

  407. who have ears to hear,

  408. but hear not,

  409. for they are a rebellious house.

  410. All of us

  411. were once these people.

  412. Eyes that did not see.

  413. Ears that did not hear.

  414. Praise God

  415. that by His Spirit

  416. He works faith

  417. in blind and deaf people.

  418. We once were blind,

  419. but now we see.

  420. We once were deaf.

  421. I'm going outside the song now,

  422. but now we hear.

  423. In Matthew chapter 13,

    Matthew 13:11

  424. verses 11 and following,

  425. Jesus responds

  426. to the apostles

  427. asking why He speaks

  428. in parables,

  429. and He says this,

  430. To you it has been given

  431. to know the secrets

  432. of the kingdom of heaven,

  433. but to them

  434. it has not been given.

  435. For to the one who has,

  436. more will be given,

  437. and he will have an abundance,

  438. but from the one who has not,

  439. even what he has

  440. will be taken away.

  441. This is why I speak to them

  442. in parables,

  443. because seeing,

  444. they do not see,

  445. and hearing,

  446. they do not hear,

  447. nor do they understand.

  448. Indeed, in their case,

  449. the prophecy of Isaiah

  450. is fulfilled that says,

  451. and this is Isaiah 6, 9, and 10,

  452. you will indeed hear,

  453. but never understand,

  454. and you will indeed see,

  455. but never perceive.

  456. For this people's heart

  457. has grown dull,

  458. and with their ears

  459. they can barely hear,

  460. and their eyes

  461. they have closed.

  462. Lest they should see

  463. with their eyes,

  464. and hear with their ears,

  465. and understand with their heart,

  466. and turn,

  467. and I would heal them.

  468. But blessed are your eyes,

  469. for they see,

  470. and your ears,

  471. for they hear.

  472. For truly,

  473. I say to you,

  474. many prophets

  475. and righteous people

  476. long to see

  477. what you see

  478. and did not see it,

  479. and to hear

  480. what you hear

  481. and did not hear it.

  482. Oh, beloved,

  483. we have much reason

  484. to praise God

  485. for his grace

  486. to us in Christ.

  487. He has caused us

  488. to be born again.

  489. He has given us

  490. our sight,

  491. and given us

  492. the ability to hear.

  493. He had made us

  494. not like idolaters

  495. any longer.

  496. He's restored in us

  497. our imago Dei,

  498. our willingness

  499. and our ability

  500. to praise him

  501. and worship him

  502. as we should.

  503. Now,

  504. most of us

  505. I would presume

  506. to think all of us

  507. do not find ourselves

  508. in a position

  509. to bow down

  510. to carved images.

  511. I did not grow up

  512. in a house

  513. where as a follower

  514. of Jesus Christ

  515. I had to neglect

  516. the shrine

  517. that was held

  518. someplace.

  519. However,

  520. the Bible

  521. is relentless

  522. about the idolatry

  523. of our hearts

  524. because we were created

  525. to worship

  526. God alone.

  527. and idolatry

  528. takes all

  529. types

  530. of forms.

  531. God says to his people,

  532. good command,

  533. a command we need

  534. to keep,

  535. Exodus 23,

  536. you shall have

  537. no other gods

  538. before me.

  539. Charles Spurgeon said,

  540. and this is on your bulletin

  541. if you want to look at it,

  542. if you love anything

  543. better than God,

  544. you are idolaters.

  545. I'll repeat that part of it.

  546. If you love anything

  547. better than God,

  548. you are idolaters.

  549. If there is anything

  550. you would not give up

  551. for God,

  552. it is your idol.

  553. If there is anything

  554. that you seek

  555. with greater fervor

  556. than you seek

  557. the glory of God,

  558. that is your idol.

  559. And conversion

  560. means a turning

  561. from every idol.

  562. It means that we take

  563. all things

  564. and count them

  565. as loss

  566. for their surpassing

  567. worth

  568. of knowing

  569. Jesus Christ,

  570. our Lord.

  571. And beloved,

  572. our hearts

  573. are so inclined

  574. to idolatry.

  575. And I believe

  576. that Satan

  577. loves nothing more

  578. than to get

  579. in the mix

  580. and have us

  581. be acceptable

  582. of our idolatry.

  583. To think,

  584. yeah, yeah,

  585. Jesus,

  586. and,

  587. I can still have,

  588. I can still enjoy,

  589. I can still do,

  590. and in that

  591. we so regularly

  592. put those things

  593. in places

  594. of prominence

  595. in our lives.

  596. Most of us,

  597. again,

  598. I would dare say

  599. all of us,

  600. don't have a closet

  601. in our home

  602. with a shrine set up,

  603. a thing that we bow to.

  604. It's not so on the surface

  605. for us,

  606. but it's rather

  607. more about

  608. the attitudes

  609. and the intentions

  610. of our heart.

  611. What are your

  612. affections

  613. set on?

  614. What do you seek,

  615. as Spurgeon said,

  616. with fervor?

  617. What do you talk about?

  618. What do you spend

  619. your money on?

  620. Where is your time

  621. aimed at?

  622. If it's not

  623. the glory of God,

  624. then it's an idol.

  625. An idol is anything

  626. that we place

  627. as the primary focus

  628. of our lives.

  629. And we regularly

  630. take good things,

  631. good things,

  632. meant to be good,

  633. meant to be given

  634. as gifts from the creator

  635. for our enjoyment.

  636. And we make them idols

  637. by loving them

  638. above God himself.

  639. And this comes out of us

  640. in all kinds

  641. of ugly ways.

  642. Let me give you

  643. just some examples

  644. of some things

  645. that can be good,

  646. but can be idols

  647. in your life.

  648. security.

  649. Feeling safe

  650. can be an idol

  651. in your life.

  652. Material possessions

  653. of all kinds.

  654. Aren't we Americans?

  655. Revving up

  656. into Christmas season.

  657. Really watch our hearts,

  658. beloved.

  659. What is it

  660. that we worship?

  661. Knowledge.

  662. Knowledge can be

  663. an idol in your life.

  664. You can worship

  665. how much you know

  666. or how much you don't know

  667. but want to know.

  668. your political ideology

  669. can be an idol

  670. in your life.

  671. Having control

  672. of the situation

  673. can be an idol

  674. in your life.

  675. Comfort

  676. and leisure

  677. can be idols.

  678. Good health

  679. can be an idol.

  680. Hear me,

  681. those of you,

  682. our family included,

  683. who strive

  684. to be healthy

  685. and to eat healthy,

  686. this can become

  687. idolatry for us.

  688. pleasure,

  689. success,

  690. our physical appearance.

  691. Guys,

  692. I know some of you

  693. really want to be swole.

  694. That could be idolatry.

  695. Your ambition

  696. and dare I even say

  697. your family

  698. seems to be

  699. the last

  700. acceptable idol

  701. often

  702. in the church.

  703. Anything

  704. that's placed above

  705. the prominence

  706. of God

  707. in our lives

  708. can be an idol.

  709. And beloved,

  710. it comes at us

  711. from all directions

  712. all the time.

  713. The Christian life

  714. is meant to be a life

  715. of repentance

  716. and faith

  717. turning from

  718. our sinful idolatry

  719. into God.

  720. We will not be done

  721. with this

  722. in this lifetime.

  723. But,

  724. I can tell you,

  725. by faith,

  726. by the grace of God,

  727. we can get better.

  728. We can improve

  729. upon

  730. true worship

  731. of the one

  732. living God.

  733. We can

  734. put away

  735. our idolatry.

  736. And I want to show you

  737. just a little bit,

  738. just a brief glimpse

  739. of how it is

  740. that we

  741. identify idolatry

  742. in our lives

  743. and how it is

  744. that God works

  745. to strip idolatry

  746. out of our lives

  747. by looking at

  748. James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  749. So mark somehow

  750. Psalm 115,

  751. your finger,

  752. bookmark it,

  753. and turn to

  754. James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  755. In verse 1,

  756. James asks

  757. an astounding question.

  758. What causes

  759. quarrels

  760. and what causes

  761. fights

  762. among you?

  763. What causes

  764. our relational

  765. disagreements?

  766. And this isn't

  767. necessarily

  768. just what's happening

  769. inside of a church

  770. fellowship.

  771. This is with

  772. our spouses.

  773. This is with

  774. our co-workers.

  775. This is with

  776. the guy that pulls

  777. out in front of you

  778. on the road.

  779. What's causing

  780. the quarrels

  781. and causing

  782. the fights

  783. among you?

  784. And he says this,

  785. is it not this

  786. that your passions

  787. are at war

  788. within you?

  789. Your passions.

  790. Things that you

  791. desire to have

  792. and it's not

  793. being had the way

  794. you want it to be

  795. had.

  796. And so

  797. things happen

  798. as a result

  799. of that.

  800. anxiety

  801. or anger

  802. which we

  803. mask with

  804. terms like

  805. frustration

  806. and stress.

  807. These are not

  808. things that

  809. God's people

  810. are meant to be

  811. living in.

  812. These are not

  813. emotions that are

  814. meant to be felt

  815. by God's

  816. people.

  817. Your passions

  818. are at war

  819. within you.

  820. Verse 2,

  821. you desire

  822. and do not

  823. have

  824. so you

  825. murder

  826. your anger

  827. in your heart.

  828. You covet

  829. and cannot

  830. obtain

  831. so you

  832. fight

  833. and you

  834. quarrel.

  835. You do not

  836. have

  837. because you

  838. don't ask.

  839. You ask

  840. and do not

  841. receive

  842. because you

  843. ask wrongly

  844. to spend

  845. it on

  846. your passions.

  847. You don't

  848. aim these

  849. things at

  850. the glory

  851. of God.

  852. You aim

  853. them at

  854. your self.

  855. You

  856. adulterous

  857. people.

  858. So here's

  859. a people

  860. turning back

  861. from their

  862. God

  863. to their

  864. idols.

  865. Right?

  866. This is

  867. in our

  868. Bible reading.

  869. We've been

  870. in the

  871. book of

  872. Judges.

  873. We've just

  874. gotten through

  875. the book

  876. of Judges.

  877. And you

  878. see a

  879. people

  880. devoting

  881. themselves

  882. in worship

  883. to God.

  884. Things get

  885. restored.

  886. A judge

  887. comes along

  888. and sorts

  889. things out.

  890. And then

  891. how quickly

  892. do they

  893. go back

  894. to the

  895. idols

  896. of the

  897. land?

  898. They go

  899. back to

  900. the

  901. Canaanite

  902. Baals

  903. to worship

  904. them once

  905. again.

  906. That's

  907. what's

  908. happening

  909. here.

  910. You

  911. adulterous

  912. People!

  913. Do you

  914. not know

  915. that friendship

  916. with the

  917. world

  918. is enmity

  919. with God?

  920. Therefore

  921. whoever wishes

  922. to be a

  923. friend of

  924. the world

  925. makes himself

  926. an enemy

  927. of God.

  928. As people

  929. who have been

  930. delivered by

  931. God,

  932. who are

  933. his people,

  934. we are so

  935. very apt

  936. to do

  937. this.

  938. Let me

  939. to make

  940. the point.

  941. I had

  942. another

  943. example

  944. in mind

  945. at this

  946. point in

  947. the sermon,

  948. but I

  949. thought because

  950. it was

  951. yesterday,

  952. it was a

  953. better

  954. example.

  955. This was a

  956. really tiring

  957. week for me.

  958. It was an

  959. exhausting

  960. week.

  961. A great

  962. week,

  963. but it was

  964. a go,

  965. go,

  966. go,

  967. go week.

  968. We had

  969. across two

  970. days,

  971. three different

  972. Thanksgiving

  973. events.

  974. On Friday,

  975. I've got

  976. family from

  977. in town.

  978. Chris is

  979. going to

  980. come share

  981. with us

  982. in just a

  983. moment at

  984. the end

  985. of the

  986. service.

  987. We decided

  988. to do some

  989. work out

  990. of my

  991. parents'

  992. property.

  993. They had

  994. a huge

  995. oak tree

  996. come down.

  997. It was

  998. like four

  999. oak trees

  1000. it seemed

  1001. like from

  1002. that wind

  1003. storm.

  1004. We used

  1005. chainsaw

  1006. all day.

  1007. I was

  1008. really sore,

  1009. really tired

  1010. at the end

  1011. of all that.

  1012. Saturday,

  1013. I worked

  1014. up here

  1015. trying to

  1016. get ready

  1017. for this

  1018. morning.

  1019. All I

  1020. wanted to

  1021. do was

  1022. sleep or

  1023. soak in

  1024. a hot

  1025. tub.

  1026. I was

  1027. tired.

  1028. Saturday

  1029. evening,

  1030. the plan

  1031. was to

  1032. go home

  1033. and put

  1034. our

  1035. Christmas

  1036. tree

  1037. up.

  1038. Put our

  1039. tree up

  1040. at the

  1041. house and

  1042. spend some

  1043. time

  1044. decorating

  1045. it,

  1046. watching

  1047. elf and

  1048. drinking

  1049. cider while

  1050. we put

  1051. together the

  1052. tree.

  1053. A good

  1054. plan,

  1055. an enjoyable

  1056. time to

  1057. spend with

  1058. the family.

  1059. I was

  1060. frustrated

  1061. because I

  1062. really wanted

  1063. to be

  1064. comfortable.

  1065. I just

  1066. really wanted

  1067. comfort.

  1068. I wanted

  1069. to be done

  1070. with the

  1071. project of

  1072. it all.

  1073. Our

  1074. Christmas

  1075. tree stand

  1076. has been

  1077. a frustration

  1078. to me.

  1079. It's not

  1080. a stand

  1081. I have

  1082. particularly

  1083. enjoyed

  1084. across the

  1085. years.

  1086. I go

  1087. through all

  1088. the work

  1089. though,

  1090. get the

  1091. tree trimmed

  1092. up,

  1093. get it put

  1094. together,

  1095. get it in

  1096. the house,

  1097. water in

  1098. the tree,

  1099. get the

  1100. lights on

  1101. the tree,

  1102. and I

  1103. look down

  1104. and there's

  1105. a puddle

  1106. on the

  1107. floor,

  1108. and the

  1109. stand was

  1110. cracked.

  1111. Apparently,

  1112. I hit it

  1113. with a hammer

  1114. a little too

  1115. hard,

  1116. and I cracked

  1117. the bottom

  1118. of it,

  1119. and it was

  1120. leaking

  1121. everywhere.

  1122. So,

  1123. we had to

  1124. take the

  1125. tree with

  1126. the stand

  1127. now with

  1128. water in it

  1129. standoff,

  1130. discover what's

  1131. wrong with

  1132. it,

  1133. go to

  1134. Walmart on

  1135. a Saturday

  1136. night in

  1137. Gainesville,

  1138. which is

  1139. super fun,

  1140. buy a new

  1141. tree stand,

  1142. come back,

  1143. put the whole

  1144. thing back up

  1145. again,

  1146. go through the

  1147. process.

  1148. So,

  1149. you're picturing

  1150. what's going

  1151. on.

  1152. We have

  1153. little ones

  1154. running around

  1155. who are

  1156. bouncing,

  1157. jumping off

  1158. things,

  1159. really excited

  1160. that the

  1161. tree's back

  1162. in the

  1163. house now,

  1164. and Sam,

  1165. with a great

  1166. deal of

  1167. foresight and

  1168. thoughtfulness,

  1169. had already

  1170. gotten a cup

  1171. of water.

  1172. She's concerned

  1173. about now

  1174. water being back

  1175. in the stands,

  1176. so the tree

  1177. doesn't die.

  1178. So,

  1179. she brought

  1180. this big

  1181. cup of

  1182. water,

  1183. and she

  1184. set it

  1185. down next

  1186. to the

  1187. edge of

  1188. the couch,

  1189. and then

  1190. she stepped

  1191. back to

  1192. make sure I

  1193. was getting

  1194. the tree

  1195. right,

  1196. and our

  1197. one-and-a-half

  1198. year old

  1199. walked along

  1200. and kicked

  1201. the cup

  1202. of water

  1203. over.

  1204. So,

  1205. in the

  1206. place that

  1207. we had

  1208. already

  1209. cleaned up

  1210. water,

  1211. now there

  1212. was a

  1213. whole

  1214. other

  1215. cup

  1216. of water

  1217. on the

  1218. floor,

  1219. and I

  1220. went,

  1221. really,

  1222. in the

  1223. middle of

  1224. the floor,

  1225. water,

  1226. like that.

  1227. And Sam

  1228. said,

  1229. you go

  1230. sit down,

  1231. I'll

  1232. clean it

  1233. up.

  1234. Okay,

  1235. so what

  1236. came out

  1237. of me,

  1238. right,

  1239. this anger

  1240. that came

  1241. out of

  1242. me,

  1243. which she

  1244. certainly

  1245. did not

  1246. deserve,

  1247. was my

  1248. frustration,

  1249. my inner

  1250. brewing,

  1251. with my

  1252. desire to

  1253. be comfortable,

  1254. right,

  1255. I wanted

  1256. to be done,

  1257. I wanted

  1258. to sit

  1259. and do

  1260. nothing,

  1261. and confounded,

  1262. all of these

  1263. little things

  1264. were getting

  1265. in the way

  1266. of that

  1267. happening,

  1268. and it

  1269. made me

  1270. mad,

  1271. because I

  1272. wanted my,

  1273. you see how

  1274. I'm worshipping

  1275. myself,

  1276. and this

  1277. comfort that

  1278. I have,

  1279. right,

  1280. so these

  1281. little events,

  1282. I have this

  1283. little effigy

  1284. of me built,

  1285. and these

  1286. little events

  1287. are coming

  1288. along and

  1289. hacking the

  1290. leg off my

  1291. idol,

  1292. and it's

  1293. starting to

  1294. fall over,

  1295. and it

  1296. made me

  1297. mad,

  1298. right,

  1299. clearly,

  1300. sin,

  1301. and the

  1302. temptation

  1303. in me is

  1304. to immediately

  1305. justify it,

  1306. right,

  1307. and we all

  1308. do this,

  1309. well,

  1310. of course,

  1311. of course I'm

  1312. upset,

  1313. this is taking

  1314. forever,

  1315. I'm so tired,

  1316. I've had so

  1317. much work to

  1318. do this

  1319. week,

  1320. I can't

  1321. believe,

  1322. the water,

  1323. right,

  1324. and the

  1325. proper response,

  1326. which I'm

  1327. thankful by the

  1328. grace of God,

  1329. I got to in

  1330. the span of

  1331. time,

  1332. because I've

  1333. practiced this a

  1334. ton,

  1335. was to

  1336. apologize to

  1337. Sam,

  1338. I'm really

  1339. sorry,

  1340. I'm really

  1341. sorry,

  1342. I'm so

  1343. tired,

  1344. but that's

  1345. not my

  1346. excuse,

  1347. it was sin,

  1348. right,

  1349. you forgive me,

  1350. she said,

  1351. yes,

  1352. of course,

  1353. I forgive you,

  1354. because I know

  1355. you're beat

  1356. down,

  1357. I know you're

  1358. exhausted,

  1359. all the same,

  1360. right,

  1361. what is going

  1362. on in my

  1363. heart when I

  1364. get upset,

  1365. like that,

  1366. it's idolatry,

  1367. it's idolatry,

  1368. right,

  1369. so how is it

  1370. that God

  1371. exposes our

  1372. idolatry,

  1373. right,

  1374. how is it that

  1375. we come to

  1376. realize,

  1377. how is it that

  1378. I've learned,

  1379. like when I

  1380. fail in that

  1381. way,

  1382. to go,

  1383. wait a second,

  1384. this is not

  1385. justifiable,

  1386. I can't just

  1387. go around saying,

  1388. well of course I'm

  1389. getting upset,

  1390. right,

1391. I want to give you

  1392. four quick ways

  1393. that he does it,

  1394. and I know we're

  1395. getting short on time,

1396. so I'm going to move

  1397. pretty quick here,

  1398. how is it that

  1399. God exposes our

  1400. idolatry,

  1401. number one,

  1402. by his word

  1403. and his spirit,

  1404. by his word

  1405. and his spirit,

  1406. beloved,

1407. if you want to be

  1408. a true worshiper

  1409. of the one,

  1410. true,

  1411. only God,

  1412. you must read

  1413. his word,

  1414. right,

  1415. he's not a

  1416. dumb God,

  1417. he's spoken to us,

  1418. he's given us a

  1419. text,

1420. he's handed it to us,

1421. and we have it in

  1422. plenty,

  1423. right,

  1424. know this word,

  1425. it will begin

  1426. to sift you

  1427. like sand,

  1428. it will begin

  1429. to help expose

  1430. your idolatry,

  1431. Hebrews 4.12,

1432. for the word of God

  1433. is living and active,

  1434. sharper than any

  1435. two-edged sword,

  1436. piercing the division

1437. of soul and of spirit,

1438. of joints and of marrow,

  1439. and discerning the thoughts

  1440. and intentions

  1441. of the heart,

  1442. so as I'm dealing

  1443. with this emotional

  1444. response,

  1445. what's running

  1446. through my mind

  1447. is James 1.8,

  1448. that I'm meant

  1449. to be quick

  1450. to hear

  1451. and slow

  1452. to speak

  1453. and slow

  1454. to anger,

  1455. for the anger

  1456. of man does not

  1457. produce the righteousness

  1458. of God,

  1459. this is what pops

  1460. into my head,

  1461. right,

  1462. the spirit of God

  1463. goes,

1464. I got one on file

  1465. for you,

  1466. right,

  1467. you've read

  1468. and studied it,

  1469. you've memorized it,

  1470. and it's right there,

1471. and he throws it up,

  1472. and I go,

  1473. ah,

  1474. idolater,

  1475. right,

  1476. I need to repent,

  1477. I need to turn

  1478. from my sin

  1479. and back to God,

  1480. the word of God

  1481. does this,

  1482. so God exposed

  1483. our idolatry

  1484. by his word

  1485. and his spirit,

  1486. secondly,

  1487. he may expose

  1488. our idolatry

  1489. by frustrating

  1490. our idols,

  1491. by withholding

  1492. them,

  1493. the things

  1494. that you want,

  1495. things that you

  1496. think you need

  1497. to make you

  1498. happy,

  1499. for you to be

  1500. fulfilled,

  1501. he may not

  1502. give you,

  1503. or,

  1504. giving them

  1505. to us

  1506. and allowing

  1507. us to experience

  1508. their futility,

  1509. letting you

  1510. have the thing

  1511. you asked for

  1512. and run it

  1513. out to its

  1514. very end

  1515. and to say

  1516. there's no

  1517. value in

  1518. this thing

  1519. that I

  1520. thought

  1521. was a thing

  1522. worth

  1523. worshipping.

  1524. 106,

  1525. verse 13

  1526. through 15,

  1527. this is

  1528. in referencing

  1529. to Korah's

  1530. rebellion

  1531. from number

  1532. 16,

  1533. the psalm

  1534. says,

  1535. but they

  1536. soon forget

  1537. his works,

  1538. they did

  1539. not wait

  1540. for his

  1541. counsel,

  1542. but they

  1543. had a

  1544. wanton

  1545. craving

  1546. in the

  1547. wilderness

  1548. and put

  1549. God

  1550. to the

  1551. test

  1552. in the

  1553. desert.

  1554. He

  1555. gave

  1556. them

  1557. what

  1558. they

  1559. asked,

  1560. but sent

  1561. a wasting

  1562. disease

  1563. among them.

  1564. Let them

  1565. see the

  1566. very futility

  1567. of the

  1568. thing

  1569. that they

  1570. worshipped.

  1571. God

  1572. exposed

  1573. their

  1574. idolatry

  1575. by

  1576. frustrating

  1577. our

  1578. idols,

  1579. by withholding

  1580. them,

  1581. or allowing

  1582. us to

  1583. experience

  1584. their

  1585. futility.

  1586. Third,

  1587. God

  1588. exposed

  1589. their

  1590. idolatry

  1591. possibly

  1592. by giving

  1593. us

  1594. an example

  1595. of true

  1596. worship.

  1597. So this

  1598. is where

  1599. the church

  1600. is extremely

  1601. helpful.

  1602. We come

  1603. around people

  1604. who deal

  1605. with the

  1606. same things

  1607. that we

  1608. deal with,

  1609. who are

  1610. willing to

  1611. share with

  1612. you their

  1613. very

  1614. experienced.

  1615. Let me

  1616. tell you

  1617. about my

  1618. idols,

  1619. that you

  1620. might not

  1621. be an

  1622. idolater,

  1623. that you

  1624. might learn

  1625. to purge

  1626. idols from

  1627. your living.

  1628. This is a

  1629. wonderful place

  1630. in which to

  1631. read biography,

  1632. to see men

  1633. and women

  1634. who have

  1635. gone before

  1636. us,

  1637. who have

  1638. been faithful

  1639. worshippers,

  1640. of God.

  1641. We also

  1642. get wonderful

  1643. examples from

  1644. the scripture.

  1645. 1 Kings

  1646. 18,

  1647. 36.

  1648. This is back

  1649. to Elijah,

  1650. as I mentioned

  1651. earlier.

  1652. At the time

  1653. of the

  1654. offering,

  1655. Elijah the

  1656. prophet came

  1657. near and

  1658. said,

  1659. O Lord,

  1660. God of

  1661. Abraham,

  1662. Isaac,

  1663. and Israel,

  1664. let it be

  1665. known this

  1666. day that

  1667. you are

  1668. God in

  1669. Israel,

  1670. and that

  1671. I am

  1672. your servant,

  1673. and that

  1674. I have

  1675. done all

  1676. these things

  1677. at your

  1678. word.

  1679. And we

  1680. know that

  1681. he called

  1682. down fire

  1683. of God

  1684. that lapped

  1685. up the

  1686. water and

  1687. lit the

  1688. sacrifice

  1689. on fire.

  1690. We see

  1691. that he

  1692. had devoted

  1693. himself to

  1694. the one

  1695. true living

  1696. God and

  1697. had obeyed

  1698. his word.

  1699. So God

  1700. can expose

  1701. our idolatry

  1702. by giving

  1703. us examples

  1704. to look

  1705. around at

  1706. people who

  1707. were godly

  1708. and serving

  1709. God well.

  1710. God also

  1711. exposed our

  1712. idolatry,

  1713. number four,

  1714. and this is the

  1715. last one,

  1716. by administering

  1717. loving

  1718. discipline.

  1719. If you

  1720. belong to

  1721. God,

  1722. you will

  1723. experience

  1724. the

  1725. discipline

  1726. of God.

  1727. The writer

  1728. of Hebrews

  1729. says in

  1730. chapter 12,

  1731. verses 5

  1732. and 6,

  1733. verse 6,

  1734. and have

  1735. you forgotten

  1736. the exhortation

  1737. that addresses

  1738. you as

  1739. sons?

  1740. My son,

  1741. do not

  1742. regard lightly

  1743. the discipline

  1744. of the

  1745. Lord,

  1746. nor be

  1747. weary

  1748. when reproved

  1749. by him.

  1750. For the

  1751. Lord disciplines

  1752. the one

  1753. he loves

  1754. and chastises

  1755. every son

  1756. whom he

  1757. receives.

  1758. So God

  1759. in his

  1760. great,

  1761. steadfast,

  1762. loving kindness

  1763. toward us

  1764. disciplines

  1765. us to

  1766. expose

  1767. those things

  1768. that we

  1769. pick up

  1770. and worship

  1771. that are

  1772. lesser things

  1773. and therefore

  1774. damaging things.

  1775. God is our

  1776. greatest and

  1777. highest good

  1778. and so God

  1779. helps to

  1780. strip away

  1781. idols

  1782. in our

  1783. lives.

  1784. So,

  1785. the four ways

  1786. that he

  1787. works at that.

  1788. Go back to

  1789. Psalm 115.

  1790. So what

  1791. then is the

  1792. remedy

  1793. of this

  1794. idolatry?

  1795. How is it

  1796. that we're

  1797. not idolaters

  1798. when we

  1799. worship

  1800. God?

  1801. We aim

  1802. our worship

  1803. as people

  1804. will worship

  1805. something,

  1806. so we aim

  1807. our worship

  1808. where our

  1809. worship belongs,

  1810. the one

  1811. true

  1812. and living

  1813. God.

  1814. So this is

  1815. the second

  1816. overall point,

  1817. the glory

  1818. of the one

  1819. true

  1820. and living

  1821. God.

  1822. The psalmist

  1823. tells us

  1824. that the

  1825. remedy of

  1826. this idolatry

  1827. is to

  1828. trust,

  1829. to place

  1830. our faith

  1831. in this

  1832. God.

  1833. Our God

  1834. who is in

  1835. the heavens

  1836. who does

  1837. all that

  1838. he pleases.

  1839. And we

  1840. get these

  1841. wonderful

  1842. repetitions.

  1843. O Israel,

  1844. O house

  1845. of Aaron,

  1846. you who

  1847. fear the

  1848. Lord,

  1849. so the

  1850. people and

  1851. the people

  1852. set aside

  1853. for the

  1854. specific task

  1855. and then

  1856. all of us

  1857. who fear

  1858. the Lord,

  1859. trust in

  1860. the Lord.

  1861. Place your

  1862. faith in

  1863. the Lord.

  1864. Believe in

  1865. his promises

  1866. to you.

  1867. He is

  1868. their help

  1869. and he

  1870. is their

  1871. shield.

  1872. He is both

  1873. actively

  1874. pursuing our

  1875. good and

  1876. he's also

  1877. shielding us

  1878. from harm.

  1879. He's passively

  1880. pursuing our

  1881. good as well.

  1882. He's stopping

  1883. things that

  1884. would be to

  1885. our detriment.

  1886. And we are

  1887. so quick to

  1888. define our

  1889. good or our

  1890. bad in

  1891. human terms.

  1892. We must get

  1893. it clear in

  1894. our minds

  1895. that as we

  1896. worship God,

  1897. as we set

  1898. our aim on

  1899. him,

  1900. as he works

  1901. our good,

  1902. that it's

  1903. his good

  1904. he intends

  1905. to work in

  1906. us.

  1907. It's for our

  1908. good,

  1909. it's his

  1910. good.

  1911. Romans 8,

  1912. 28,

  1913. 29.

  1914. I hope this

  1915. doesn't get

  1916. old to you.

  1917. And we know

  1918. that for those

  1919. who love

  1920. God,

  1921. all things,

  1922. this is our

  1923. God who's in

  1924. the heaven,

  1925. who does

  1926. all that he

  1927. pleases,

  1928. all things

  1929. work together

  1930. for good.

  1931. For those who

  1932. are called

  1933. according to

  1934. his purpose.

  1935. A lot of

  1936. people love

  1937. 28,

  1938. right?

  1939. And then they

  1940. walk around

  1941. trying to figure

  1942. out what

  1943. the good

  1944. is,

  1945. right?

  1946. Oh,

  1947. someday I'll

  1948. figure out

  1949. the good.

  1950. In hindsight,

  1951. I'll understand

  1952. the good.

  1953. But Paul tells

  1954. us in verse 29

  1955. what the good

  1956. is.

  1957. We don't have

  1958. to wonder

  1959. about it,

  1960. just like we

  1961. don't have to

  1962. wonder about

  1963. our purpose.

  1964. Our purpose

  1965. is to glorify

  1966. God.

  1967. What is the

  1968. good that

  1969. he's seeking

  1970. in our

  1971. living,

  1972. right?

  1973. Verse 29,

  1974. for those whom

  1975. he foreknew,

  1976. he also predestined

  1977. to be conformed

  1978. to the image

  1979. of his son.

  1980. That's the

  1981. answer.

  1982. What's the

  1983. good that God

  1984. is seeking

  1985. in all of

  1986. our

  1987. circumstances,

  1988. all of this

  1989. working in

  1990. us,

  1991. seeking our

  1992. praise,

  1993. Christlikeness.

  1994. This is what

  1995. he's working

  1996. in us,

  1997. trying to

  1998. work out

  1999. of us,

  2000. is Christlikeness.

  2001. So this is

  2002. the way that

  2003. God works

  2004. as both

  2005. our help

  2006. and our

  2007. shield.

  2008. And certainly,

  2009. God has

  2010. not forgotten

  2011. us.

  2012. The Lord

  2013. has remembered

  2014. us.

  2015. He has

  2016. blessed us,

  2017. both now

  2018. and forever

  2019. more in

  2020. Christ.

  2021. Christ.

  2022. I hope

  2023. that you've

  2024. experienced

  2025. this morning

  2026. that you

  2027. can say

  2028. with me,

  2029. yes and

  2030. amen,

  2031. God has

  2032. blessed me

  2033. in Christ.

  2034. I have

  2035. joy and

  2036. satisfaction

  2037. and identity.

  2038. I can say,

  2039. yes,

  2040. the things of

  2041. this world

  2042. grow strangely

  2043. dim in the

  2044. light of his

  2045. glorious grace.

  2046. I can see

  2047. and have seen

  2048. in my life

  2049. that I want

  2050. to turn away

  2051. from idols.

  2052. They are,

  2053. in fact,

  2054. lesser things

  2055. and I want

  2056. to turn

  2057. to the living

  2058. God.

  2059. I want to

  2060. leverage all

  2061. that I have

  2062. and all

  2063. that I am

  2064. for his

  2065. glory.

  2066. He has

  2067. blessed us.

  2068. May you

  2069. be blessed

  2070. by the Lord

  2071. who made

  2072. heaven and

  2073. earth and

  2074. may we

  2075. bless his

  2076. name

  2077. forever

  2078. more.

  2079. Just as God

  2080. promised Joshua

  2081. in Joshua 1.

  2082. This is from

  2083. our recent

  2084. Bible reading.

  2085. I will never

  2086. leave you

  2087. or forsake

  2088. you.

  2089. He has

  2090. promised the

  2091. same to us

  2092. who believe

  2093. in Christ.

  2094. Hebrews 13

  2095. 5 says

  2096. the very

  2097. same.

  2098. I will never

  2099. leave you

  2100. nor forsake

  2101. you.

  2102. And in

  2103. closing,

  2104. let me put

  2105. that phrase

  2106. from Joshua

  2107. 1.

  2108. 5 in

  2109. its context

  2110. in Hebrews

  2111. 13.

  2112. 5.

  2113. Let's

  2114. know what

  2115. the writer

  2116. of Hebrews

  2117. says.

  2118. Keep your

  2119. life free

  2120. from love

  2121. of money.

  2122. He's talking

  2123. about a

  2124. particular form

  2125. of idolatry.

  2126. So read

  2127. that.

  2128. Keep your

  2129. life free

  2130. from idolatry

  2131. in this

  2132. particular

  2133. form and

  2134. be content

  2135. with what

  2136. you have,

  2137. who you

  2138. have.

  2139. I think

  2140. the writer

  2141. of Hebrews

  2142. could have

  2143. said with

  2144. who you

  2145. have.

  2146. For he

  2147. has said,

  2148. I will

  2149. never leave

  2150. you.

  2151. nor forsake

  2152. you.

  2153. Let's

  2154. pray together.
