  1. Join me please in your copy of God's Word, which I hope you have with you in Matthew's Gospel, chapter 11.

  2. Last week we talked about working diligently to the glory of God.

  3. And as promised, and to set some balance to last week, this morning we're going to talk about rest.

  4. And as I was preparing this week, both to preach today and to go on this sabbatical,

  5. it was a very fitting topic for me, as this is probably one of the busiest weeks I've had.

  6. And I've been suffering from a vicious head cold, as I know many of you all are.

  7. I've got a cough drop resting in the side.

  8. I've got a cough in my mouth right now, just in case I need it today.

  9. It's been a fairly unrestful week, pushing for the hope of rest in a temporal sense.

  10. So it's been a good thing for me to stop and to consider this week.

  11. I hope it'll serve you as well.

  12. I discovered in my studying this week that I find poetry rather restful.

  13. And so we'll see today there's quite a bit of poetry in my sermon notes.

  14. But the text for today is Matthew chapter 11, verses 20 through 30.

    Matthew 11:20–30

  15. And before I read that for our benefit, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  16. It was written for his glory and for our good.

  17. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  18. Beginning in verse 20 of Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  19. Then Jesus began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done because they did not repent.

  20. Woe to you, Chorazin.

  21. Woe to you, Bethsaida.

  22. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

  23. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  24. And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?

  25. You will be brought down to Hades.

  26. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

  27. But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.

  28. At that time, Jesus declared,

  29. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  30. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children.

  31. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

  32. All things have been handed over to me by my Father.

  33. And no one knows the Son except the Father.

  34. And no one knows the Father except the Son.

  35. And anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

  36. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden.

  37. And I will give you rest.

  38. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.

  39. For I am gentle and lowly in heart.

  40. And you will find rest for your souls.

  41. For my yoke is easy.

  42. And my burden is light.

  43. In verse 28, Jesus extends to you and I a great invitation.

  44. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden.

  45. And I will give you rest.

  46. And this is such a great invitation for those who are weary.

  47. I don't know if any of you feel that way this morning.

  48. Feel beat down by the world around you.

  49. This is such a good invitation for us for at least two reasons.

  50. Firstly, Jesus' invitation is a great invitation because He offers us rest from our greatest problem.

  51. Jesus speaks such comforting words in the conclusion of our text.

  52. But not all of His words in this text are comforting.

  53. Recall how it began with denouncement and woes.

  54. Jesus publicly declared the wickedness of the unrepentant people of the cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida and Capernaum.

  55. These were all Jewish cities in which, as Matthew here records for us,

  56. most of Jesus' miracles had been performed.

  57. Jesus' miracles accompanied His preaching to give validity to them.

  58. Jesus coming onto the scene, speaking new things with authority,

  59. used signs to give validity to what it was He was saying.

  60. And Jesus here juxtaposes their unbelief

  61. against how the Gentile cities of Tyre and Sidon

  62. and the ancient city of Sodom would have responded.

  63. Had such miracles been performed amongst them.

  64. Now, lest we lose sight of what is most important here.

  65. The point that Jesus is making,

  66. it is He came with power and He preached a message.

  67. A message that these denounced cities did not respond to.

  68. Many in our day are seeking new signs,

  69. wanting some taste of the metaphysical in order to believe.

  70. But God has given us His Son.

  71. We have, as miracles before us,

  72. the incarnation,

  73. and we have the resurrection.

  74. We need nothing further.

  75. Look at what Jesus says just a chapter later in Matthew's Gospel.

  76. In Matthew chapter 12, beginning in verse 38.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  77. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered Him saying,

  78. Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.

  79. They're saying,

  80. Do something miraculous for us so that we will believe.

  81. But He answered them,

  82. An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign,

  83. but no sign will be given to you except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

  84. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish,

  85. so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  86. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it.

  87. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah,

  88. and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  89. So we see in this little brief passage in Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  90. of the incarnation, Jesus saying,

  91. Hello, I am here, I am before you.

  92. The Son of Man, which is taken from Daniel,

  93. this was an Old Testament reference,

  94. He was understood in calling Himself this to be the Messiah,

  95. God made flesh, come to deliver His people.

  96. Behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  97. The people of Nineveh listened to Jonah's preaching.

  98. They had no sign to accompany it.

  99. They simply heard the call of the Lord and they repented and believed.

  100. We see also in this text the resurrection.

  101. So will the Son of Man, so will Christ be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  102. And then what?

  103. He was raised three days later.

  104. So, what was the message that Jesus came to preach?

  105. The message that He preached accompanied by signs?

  106. The message that He preached without signs?

  107. The message that He preaches to us today?

  108. Matthew chapter 4, verse 17.

    Matthew 4:17

  109. Chapter 4, Jesus begins His ministry.

  110. In verse 17, Matthew records,

  111. This is the summary of what it is that Jesus taught.

  112. Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  113. So He preached repentance.

  114. But what is repentance?

  115. Repentance is recognizing one's offense against a most holy God.

  116. Feeling remorse for that offense.

  117. Not merely recognizing that it is an offense,

  118. but recognizing that we must feel something.

  119. We have a remorse for offending such a holy God.

  120. And seeking to satisfy the consequence of that offense.

  121. Apart from Christ, I am not okay, and you are not okay.

  122. Romans 3, Paul says famously in verses 10-12.

  123. Here's the crux.

  124. The Lord wants us to sink in.

  125. Here we go.

  126. Romans chapter 3, verses 10-12.

    Romans 3:10–12

  127. Paul says,

  128. None is righteous, no, not one.

  129. No one understands.

  130. No one seeks for God.

  131. All have turned aside.

  132. Together, they have become worthless.

  133. No one does good.

  134. Not even one.

  135. And then later in chapter 3, verse 23.

  136. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  137. All of us have not lived up to this high expectation of us, of holiness.

  138. Right?

  139. God intended for us to be His image bearers,

  140. to reflect Him in the world around us by keeping His good commands.

  141. And each and every one of us, right?

  142. From our federal head, Adam, all the way through to the babies being held in mom's arms this morning,

  143. have sinned against a most holy God.

  144. And we are in need of repentance.

  145. Repentance begins with humility.

  146. Turn with me to Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  147. Beginning in verse 9 and following.

  148. I like it when the biblical writers tell us why Jesus told the parable.

  149. Verse 9,

  150. Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous.

  151. And don't we have so many around us in this day?

  152. You might find yourself in this place thinking that somehow,

  153. if there is a God and if there is an afterlife,

  154. that you can find the way to please Him on your own.

  155. You can believe that you're good enough.

  156. Jesus speaks this parable to you.

  157. These that find themselves to be righteous and treat others with contempt.

  158. In verse 10,

  159. Two men went up into the temple to pray.

  160. One a Pharisee and the other a tax collector or publican,

  161. some of your translations may say.

  162. The Pharisee would have been an outwardly righteous man,

  163. a practicer of all of the Jewish law.

  164. The tax collector or publican would have been seen as the most vile traitor to Israel,

  165. to God's people.

  166. One who submitted himself to the Roman government and collected taxes on their behalf.

  167. Verse 11,

  168. The Pharisee standing by himself prayed thus,

  169. God, I thank you that I am not like other men,

  170. extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

  171. I fast twice a week.

  172. I give tithes of all that I get.

  173. But the tax collector standing far off would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,

  174. but beat his breast saying,

  175. God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

  176. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other.

  177. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  178. but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

  179. And so repentance begins with this kind of humility, right?

  180. A man not even willing to approach the temple,

  181. not willing to lift his eyes to heaven

  182. because he knew the offense he had given to God.

  183. Isaac Watts, who was a late 17th, early 18th century hymnist,

  184. rather popular hymnist,

  185. wrote the following poem.

  186. I don't actually think there's music to this.

  187. Hint, hint, musicians.

  188. He wrote this,

  189. Saints, at your heavenly Father's word,

  190. give up your comforts to the Lord.

  191. Behold how sinners disagree,

  192. the publican and Pharisee.

  193. One doth his righteousness proclaim,

  194. the other owns his guilt and shame.

  195. This man at humble distance stands

  196. and cries for grace with lifted hands

  197. that boldly rises near the throne

  198. and talks of duties he has done.

  199. The Lord, their different language knows

  200. and different answers he bestows.

  201. The humble soul with grace he crowns,

  202. whilst on the proud his anger frowns.

  203. Dear Father,

  204. let me never be joined with the boasting Pharisee.

  205. I have no merits of my own,

  206. but plead the sufferings of thy son.

  207. Now we have sinned against an infinite God

  208. whose holiness is infinite,

  209. and therefore our offense against him is infinite,

  210. which is why we need the infinite sacrifice

  211. of Jesus Christ to satisfy the consequence

  212. of the offense.

  213. We must humbly recognize our offense against God,

  214. feel remorse for it,

  215. but then find the remedy in Jesus.

  216. You see, friends,

  217. God expects perfection from us,

  218. but he extends to us that perfection

  219. in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  220. Upon humble admission of our offense against God

  221. and our placing our faith

  222. in the saving work of Christ,

  223. God not only forgives us our sins,

  224. but also gives us Jesus' righteousness.

  225. We take on his perfect life

  226. as he takes away our sin.

  227. This is a glorious truth

  228. that we can rest in.

  229. John Bunyan,

  230. if you're not familiar with,

  231. was a 17th century English pastor and writer.

  232. He was a preacher who preached without a license,

  233. which was necessary in those days,

  234. and therefore was imprisoned.

  235. And in prison,

  236. with a copy of Fox's Book of Martyrs

  237. and his Bible,

  238. he wrote a wonderful work called Pilgrim's Progress.

  239. And if you are a follower of Jesus Christ,

  240. you must read your scripture first

  241. and Pilgrim's Progress second.

  242. It will be nourishing to your soul

  243. to read this work.

  244. There are abridged versions,

  245. there are modern English versions.

  246. It is a work that you should pick up

  247. as it will serve you well.

  248. The work is an allegory,

  249. and it begins with the writer,

  250. the narrator,

  251. I'm assuming Bunyan,

  252. falling asleep and having a dream.

  253. And he follows in this dream

  254. the main character named Christian.

  255. And it's about his journey

  256. and then later his wife's journey

  257. to the celestial city.

  258. And Christian,

  259. at the beginning of this dream,

  260. finds himself with a heavy burden

  261. laid upon his back.

  262. If you find this illustrated,

  263. it's usually a big, ugly,

  264. bulging backpack

  265. strapped onto his back.

  266. And we come to understand

  267. that this is the weight of his sin.

  268. Right?

  269. He comes to have this burden

  270. because he's picked up a book.

  271. And he's read from the book

  272. about this good king

  273. who has a high standard

  274. which he has not met.

  275. And so he sets off

  276. to find himself

  277. loosed of this burden.

  278. I'm going to read just a brief bit

  279. to you

  280. from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress.

  281. Now I saw in my dream

  282. that the highway

  283. which Christian was to go

  284. was fenced on either side

  285. with a wall.

  286. And that wall was called salvation.

  287. Up this way, therefore,

  288. did burdened Christian run,

  289. but not without great difficulty

  290. because of the load on his back.

  291. He ran thus

  292. till he came to a place

  293. somewhat ascending,

  294. and upon that place

  295. stood a cross,

  296. and a little below

  297. in the bottom

  298. a sepulcher.

  299. That's a grave.

  300. So I saw in my dream

  301. that just as Christian

  302. came up to the cross,

  303. his burden

  304. loosed from off his shoulders

  305. and fell from off his back

  306. and began to tumble.

  307. And so continued to do

  308. until it came to the mouth

  309. of the sepulcher

  310. where it fell in

  311. and I saw it no more.

  312. Then was Christian glad

  313. and lightsome

  314. and said with a merry heart,

  315. he hath given me rest

  316. by his sorrow

  317. and life

  318. by his death.

  319. And then he burst into a song,

  320. another poem for you

  321. this morning.

  322. Christian says,

  323. Thus far did I come laden

  324. with my sin,

  325. nor could aught ease

  326. the grief that I was in.

  327. Till I came hither,

  328. what a place is this?

  329. Must here be the beginning

  330. of my bliss?

  331. Must here be the burden

  332. fall off my back?

  333. Must hear the strings

  334. that bound it to me crack?

  335. Blessed cross,

  336. blessed sepulchal,

  337. blessed rather be

  338. the man that there

  339. was put to shame

  340. for me.

  341. So,

  342. Jesus extends to us

  343. a great invitation

  344. because he offers us

  345. rest

  346. from our greatest

  347. problem.

  348. And because we can rest

  349. eternally,

  350. we can rest

  351. temporally.

  352. Because our greatest

  353. problem has been

  354. alleviated.

  355. All the light

  356. and momentary

  357. problems

  358. we can rest

  359. from.

  360. You and I

  361. do not have to labor

  362. to find ourselves

  363. approved

  364. before God.

  365. If you have placed

  366. saving faith

  367. in Jesus Christ,

  368. you

  369. are

  370. approved.

  371. And now,

  372. any work

  373. that we do

  374. comes as a

  375. grateful outflow

  376. of what he

  377. has done

  378. for us.

  379. Becomes the

  380. natural thing

  381. we do

  382. because of

  383. who

  384. we

  385. are.

  386. If God

  387. is pleased

  388. with you,

  389. you can

  390. and you

  391. should

  392. rest.

  393. Psalm

  394. 127

  395. 2

  396. says this,

  397. It is in vain

  398. that you

  399. rise up

  400. early

  401. and go

  402. late to

  403. rest,

  404. eating the

  405. bread

  406. of anxious

  407. toil,

  408. for he

  409. gives to

  410. his beloved

  411. sleep.

  412. God is

  413. not

  414. unaware

  415. of your

  416. human

  417. frailty

  418. and he

  419. intends

  420. rest

  421. for you

  422. in the very

  423. way that he

  424. created the

  425. world.

  426. He intended

  427. to set forth

  428. for us

  429. a pattern

  430. of six

  431. days of

  432. working

  433. and then

  434. what?

  435. A day

  436. of rest,

  437. that we

  438. would see

  439. that as

  440. created

  441. beings,

  442. we need

  443. to rest

  444. in our

  445. eternal

  446. security,

  447. that we

  448. can lay

  449. our heads

  450. down at

  451. night and

  452. know that

  453. we have

  454. satisfied

  455. our God.

  456. The Puritans

  457. famously

  458. talked about

  459. recreating

  460. versus

  461. recreating,

  462. which is the

  463. actual root

  464. of that

  465. word,

  466. to take

  467. time to

  468. step back

  469. away from

  470. in order

  471. to be

  472. rejuvenated,

  473. for service

  474. to the

  475. Lord.

  476. And I'll

  477. close this

  478. point out

  479. with the

  480. quote from

  481. Spurgeon

  482. that's on

  483. your bulletin.

  484. He said,

  485. rest time

  486. is not

  487. waste time.

  488. It is

  489. economy to

  490. gather

  491. fresh strength.

  492. It is

  493. wisdom to

  494. take

  495. occasional

  496. furlough.

  497. In the

  498. long run,

  499. we shall

  500. do more

  501. by sometimes

  502. doing

  503. less,

  504. by doing

  505. those things

  506. that bring

  507. rejuvenation

  508. to us.

  509. rest.

  510. So,

  511. Jesus'

  512. invitation

  513. is a

  514. great

  515. invitation

  516. because

  517. he's

  518. offering

  519. to us

  520. rest

  521. from our

  522. greatest

  523. problem.

  524. Secondly,

  525. Jesus'

  526. invitation

  527. is a

  528. great

  529. invitation

  530. because

  531. he offers

  532. us

  533. rest

  534. in the

  535. greatest

  536. person.

  537. Jesus

  538. invites

  539. us

  540. to

  541. come

  542. to

  543. him,

  544. all who

  545. labor and

  546. are heavy

  547. laden,

  548. and he

  549. will

  550. give us

  551. rest.

  552. Jesus

  553. makes

  554. some

  555. astounding

  556. claims

  557. about

  558. himself

  559. in this

  560. text.

  561. If you

  562. look at

  563. verse

  564. 27,

  565. Jesus

  566. claims

  567. that he

  568. is the

  569. Son of

  570. God.

  571. This is

  572. not a

  573. new

  574. claim

  575. in

  576. Matthew's

  577. Gospel,

  578. but it

  579. is still

  580. an

  581. astounding

  582. one,

  583. all the

  584. same.

  585. He

  586. says,

  587. all things

  588. have been

  589. handed

  590. over to

  591. me by

  592. my

  593. Father,

  594. and no

  595. one

  596. knows

  597. the

  598. Son

  599. except

  600. the

  601. Father,

  602. and no

  603. one

  604. knows

  605. the

  606. Father,

  607. except

  608. the

  609. Son.

  610. He

  611. claims

  612. that he

  613. himself

  614. is

  615. the

  616. Son

  617. of

  618. God.

  619. Secondly,

  620. he

  621. claims

  622. that he

  623. possesses

  624. all

  625. authority.

  626. Verse 27,

  627. all things

  628. have been

  629. handed

  630. over to

  631. me by

  632. my

  633. Father.

  634. He

  635. says this

  636. elsewhere

  637. in

  638. Matthew

  639. as well.

  640. Chapter

  641. 28,

  642. verse 18,

  643. this is the

  644. beginning of

  645. what we

  646. call the

  647. Great

  648. Commission.

  649. Jesus

  650. says,

  651. all authority

  652. in

  653. heaven and

  654. on earth

  655. has been

  656. given

  657. to me.

  658. He

  659. also

  660. claims

  661. that he

  662. has

  663. the

  664. power

  665. to

  666. save.

  667. He

  668. says,

  669. no one

  670. knows

  671. the

  672. Father

  673. except

  674. the

  675. Son

  676. and

  677. anyone

  678. to whom

  679. the

  680. Son

  681. chooses

  682. to reveal

  683. him.

  684. Previously,

  685. in the book

  686. of Matthew

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  687. chapter 9,

  688. beginning in

  689. verse 1,

  690. we read,

  691. getting into

  692. a boat,

  693. he crossed

  694. over and

  695. came to

  696. his own

  697. city.

  698. And behold,

  699. some people

  700. brought to

  701. him a

  702. paralytic

  703. lying on

  704. a bed.

  705. And when

  706. Jesus saw

  707. their faith,

  708. he said to

  709. the paralytic,

  710. take heart,

  711. my son,

  712. your sins

  713. are forgiven.

  714. And behold,

  715. some of the

  716. scribes said

  717. to themselves,

  718. this man is

  719. blaspheming.

  720. This man is

  721. saying that

  722. he's God

  723. able to

  724. forgive

  725. sins.

  726. Yes,

  727. this is what

  728. Jesus was

  729. saying.

  730. Verse 4,

  731. but Jesus,

  732. knowing their

  733. thoughts,

  734. said,

  735. why do

  736. you think

  737. evil in

  738. your hearts?

  739. For which

  740. is easier

  741. to say

  742. your sins

  743. are forgiven

  744. or to

  745. say rise

  746. and walk?

  747. But that

  748. you may

  749. know the

  750. Son of

  751. Man has

  752. authority on

  753. earth to

  754. forgive sins.

  755. He then

  756. said to

  757. the paralytic,

  758. rise,

  759. pick up

  760. your bed

  761. and go

  762. home.

  763. And he

  764. rose and

  765. went home.

  766. When the

  767. crowd sought,

  768. they were

  769. afraid and

  770. they glorified

  771. God who

  772. had given

  773. such authority

  774. to men.

  775. It's the

  776. astounding

  777. thing that

  778. Jesus is

  779. saying that

  780. he has

  781. the power

  782. to forgive

  783. sin,

  784. that no

  785. one makes

  786. it to the

  787. Father.

  788. No one

  789. can know

  790. the Father

  791. except by

  792. knowing the

  793. Son.

  794. John 14,

  795. 6.

  796. John records

  797. Jesus said,

  798. I am the

  799. way and the

  800. truth and the

  801. life.

  802. No one comes

  803. to the Father

  804. except through

  805. me.

  806. Jesus makes

  807. some incredible

  808. claims in the

  809. Scripture.

  810. Peter, in

  811. a 1950 essay

  812. entitled,

  813. What Are We

  814. To Make

  815. of Jesus?

  816. by C.S.

  817. Lewis, he

  818. said the

  819. following,

  820. In my

  821. opinion, the

  822. only person

  823. who can say

  824. that sort of

  825. thing, that

  826. he's the

  827. Son of God,

  828. is either

  829. God or a

  830. complete lunatic

  831. suffering from

  832. that form of

  833. delusion which

  834. undermines the

  835. whole mind

  836. of man.

  837. If you think

  838. you are a

  839. poached egg,

  840. when you are

  841. not looking for

  842. a piece of

  843. toast to suit

  844. you, you may

  845. be sane.

  846. But if you

  847. think you are

  848. God, there is

  849. no chance for

  850. you.

  851. You catch that?

  852. Like, you'd be

  853. more sane to

  854. think that you're

  855. a poached

  856. egg.

  857. But if you

  858. think you are

  859. God, there is

  860. no chance for

  861. you.

  862. We may note

  863. in passing that

  864. he was never

  865. regarded as a

  866. mere moral

  867. teacher.

  868. He did not

  869. produce that

  870. effect on any

  871. of the people

  872. who actually

  873. met him.

  874. He produced

  875. mainly three

  876. effects.

  877. You have to

  878. find yourself

  879. in one of

  880. these three

  881. places.

  882. You're honest

  883. with the

  884. Jesus of

  885. the Bible.

  886. He produced

  887. mainly three

  888. effects.

  889. Hatred,

  890. terror,

  891. or adoration.

  892. There is no

  893. trace in the

  894. Bible of

  895. people expressing

  896. mild

  897. approval.

  898. Jesus made

  899. astounding

  900. claims about

  901. himself.

  902. The son of

  903. God.

  904. People could

  905. only come to

  906. the father

  907. through him.

  908. He had the

  909. power to

  910. forgive sins.

  911. In fact,

  912. power over

  913. all things.

  914. But Jesus

  915. makes a

  916. further and

  917. possibly more

  918. astounding

  919. claim in

  920. verse 29.

  921. He says,

  922. I am

  923. gentle and

  924. lowly in

  925. heart.

  926. As we think

  927. about coming

  928. to Jesus for

  929. rest, this is

  930. incredible.

  931. Jesus is not

  932. unable to

  933. sympathize with

  934. us in our

  935. weakness.

  936. Having become

  937. fully men,

  938. he experienced

  939. your pain and

  940. he experienced

  941. your exhaustion.

  942. Jesus grew

  943. tired, John

  944. 4, 6, and got

  945. thirsty, John

  946. 19, 28, and

  947. hungry, Matthew

  948. 4, 2.

  949. He became

  950. physically weak,

  951. Matthew 4, 11,

  952. Luke 23, 26,

  953. Hebrews 4, 15.

  954. He suffered

  955. just as we

  956. suffer and

  957. more so to

  958. the point of

  959. the cross.

  960. The writer of

  961. Hebrews says

  962. in Hebrews 4, 15,

  963. For we do not

  964. have a high

  965. priest who is

  966. unable to

  967. sympathize with

  968. our weaknesses,

  969. but one who in

  970. every respect has

  971. been tempted as

  972. we are, yet

  973. without sin.

  974. beloved, you

  975. can go to

  976. Jesus with all

  977. of your hurts

  978. and all of

  979. your struggles,

  980. and you will

  981. find with

  982. Jesus Christ

  983. no condemnation,

  984. you don't have

  985. to bear guilt

  986. before him.

  987. He says,

  988. come to me,

  989. you who are

  990. weary and

  991. heavy laden,

  992. and I will

  993. give you

  994. rest.

  995. Even as we

  996. work to see

  997. the kingdom of

  998. God fully

  999. realized,

  1000. Jesus promises.

  1001. And this was

  1002. such a good

  1003. meditation for

  1004. my soul this

  1005. week as I'm

  1006. thinking about

  1007. taking my

  1008. hands off of

  1009. this church for

  1010. a month,

  1011. which is

  1012. something I've

  1013. never done

  1014. before,

  1015. just fully

  1016. removing myself

  1017. from my

  1018. involvement in

  1019. it.

  1020. And some of

  1021. you who know

  1022. me well know

  1023. that I can be

  1024. a bit controlling.

  1025. Jesus says in

  1026. Luke 12, 32,

  1027. fear not,

  1028. little flock,

  1029. flock, for

  1030. it is your

  1031. father's good

  1032. pleasure to

  1033. give you the

  1034. kingdom.

  1035. I think wrongly

  1036. I have this

  1037. idea that the

  1038. kingdom, I

  1039. must go take

  1040. it, right?

  1041. That I have to

  1042. get out and I

  1043. have to work so

  1044. hard that I

  1045. gain the kingdom,

  1046. right?

  1047. That without me

  1048. the kingdom

  1049. doesn't come.

  1050. But here,

  1051. Jesus speaks so

  1052. very clearly to

  1053. that frailty in

  1054. my heart.

  1055. Fear not,

  1056. and I love

  1057. little flock,

  1058. little sheep,

  1059. for it is your

  1060. father's good

  1061. pleasure to

  1062. give to you

  1063. the kingdom.

  1064. Brother, we

  1065. have so much

  1066. room for rest

  1067. in the good

  1068. shepherd.

  1069. So Jesus'

  1070. invitation is a

  1071. great invitation

  1072. because he offers

  1073. us rest in

  1074. himself.

  1075. The Bible also

  1076. uses the metaphor

  1077. of thirst to

  1078. express our

  1079. need of rest

  1080. in God.

  1081. In Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 2:12

  1082. chapter 2,

  1083. verse 12 and

  1084. 13, the

  1085. prophet Jeremiah

  1086. writes,

  1087. Be appalled,

  1088. O heavens,

  1089. at this.

  1090. Be shocked,

  1091. be utterly

  1092. desolate,

  1093. declares the

  1094. Lord.

  1095. For my people

  1096. have committed

  1097. two evils.

  1098. They have

  1099. forsaken me

  1100. the fountain

  1101. of living

  1102. waters.

  1103. They have

  1104. not come to

  1105. me for rest,

  1106. is what he is

  1107. saying.

  1108. And instead,

  1109. they have

  1110. hewed out

  1111. cisterns for

  1112. themselves,

  1113. broken cisterns

  1114. that can hold

  1115. no water.

  1116. Going to

  1117. things,

  1118. pursuing things

  1119. to meet our

  1120. needs,

  1121. to find us

  1122. satisfied,

  1123. to give us

  1124. rest that

  1125. cannot give

  1126. us rest.

  1127. When we have

  1128. access to

  1129. the Lord God

  1130. Almighty,

  1131. His Son,

  1132. Jesus Christ,

  1133. the fountain

  1134. of living

  1135. waters.

  1136. John records

  1137. in chapter 7,

  1138. verse 37

  1139. and 38,

  1140. Jesus is in

  1141. Jerusalem at the

  1142. feast of booths.

  1143. In verse 37,

  1144. John records,

  1145. on the last

  1146. day of the

  1147. feast,

  1148. the great

  1149. day,

  1150. Jesus stood

  1151. up and

  1152. cried out,

  1153. if anyone

  1154. thirsts,

  1155. let him

  1156. come to

  1157. me and

  1158. drink.

  1159. Whoever

  1160. believes in

  1161. me as the

  1162. scripture has

  1163. said,

  1164. out of his

  1165. heart will

  1166. flow rivers

  1167. of living

  1168. water.

  1169. What a

  1170. blessed

  1171. rest we

  1172. can have

  1173. in Christ.

  1174. And in

  1175. closing,

  1176. I have one

  1177. more poem

  1178. for you.

  1179. This is

  1180. actually a

  1181. hymn.

  1182. It has

  1183. music written

  1184. to accompany

  1185. it.

  1186. It's called,

  1187. O Christ

  1188. in thee

  1189. my soul

  1190. hath found

  1191. by Francis

  1192. Bevan.

  1193. She was a

  1194. 19th century

  1195. hymnist.

  1196. O Christ

  1197. in thee

  1198. my soul

  1199. hath found

  1200. and found

  1201. in thee

  1202. alone

  1203. the peace,

  1204. the joy

  1205. I sought

  1206. so long,

  1207. the bliss

  1208. till now

  1209. unknown.

  1210. I sighed

  1211. for rest

  1212. and happiness.

  1213. I yearned

  1214. for them,

  1215. not thee.

  1216. But while

  1217. I passed

  1218. my Savior

  1219. by,

  1220. his love

  1221. laid hold

  1222. on me.

  1223. I tried

  1224. the broken

  1225. cisterns,

  1226. ah,

  1227. but how

  1228. the waters

  1229. failed.

  1230. Even as

  1231. I stooped

  1232. to drink,

  1233. they fled

  1234. and mocked

  1235. me as

  1236. I wailed.

  1237. The pleasures

  1238. lost I

  1239. sadly mourned,

  1240. but never

  1241. wept for

  1242. thee,

  1243. till grace

  1244. the sightless

  1245. eyes received

  1246. thy

  1247. loveliness

  1248. to see.

  1249. Now

  1250. none

  1251. but Christ

  1252. can satisfy

  1253. none other

  1254. name for

  1255. me.

  1256. There's

  1257. love

  1258. and life

  1259. and lasting

  1260. joy,

  1261. Christ

  1262. Jesus

  1263. found.

  1264. Let's pray

  1265. together.

  1266. Let's pray

  1267. together.

  1268. Let's pray

  1269. together.

  1270. Let's pray

  1271. together.

  1272. Let's pray

  1273. together.

  1274. Let's pray

  1275. together.

  1276. Let's pray

  1277. together.

  1278. Let's pray

  1279. together.

  1280. Let's pray
