  1. Good morning. Well, open up your copies of God's Word to John 17.

  2. ! For those of you who have been praying for me this morning, I'm really grateful.

  3. ! The two hours of sleep are slowly being overtaken by pre-workout and Jesus,

  4. to which all pre-workout would be worthless.

  5. So I drank the most potent stuff I could find this morning, so here I am. We're ready.

  6. But usually when I'm tired, one of the first things to go are my reading out loud ability for some reason.

  7. So show me a lot of grace today if you can find it in your heart.

  8. So for those of you who are new on the scene, last week we began a three-week series on John 17,

  9. which is known as the true Lord's Prayer or the high priestly prayer of Jesus.

  10. And it is a passage that I've been enthralled by for many years.

  11. Truly, I don't just say that like I really mean that.

  12. It's one that just kind of stands out and tucked away in the pages of Scripture.

  13. And so for a long time I've been wanting to hopefully encourage other people with how my soul has been blessed by this prayer.

  14. We know that our Lord was in constant prayer.

  15. We know that He was completely devoted to prayer and communing with the Father.

  16. But the content of Jesus' prayers are not really out there for the most part.

  17. But John 17, we get a peek, we get a glimpse of what it looked like for Jesus to talk to the Father.

  18. And you feel almost like you're eavesdropping on a very, very intimate conversation.

  19. And many people throughout the history of the church, many people have been awed by John 17.

  20. 19th century preacher Charles Spurgeon, not a stranger to this crowd.

  21. He said,

  22. And so what's been commonly again referred to as the Lord's Prayer.

  23. It has about 650 words in it.

  24. It just takes a couple minutes to read, but there's enough depth in this prayer for you to spend eternity just diving into.

  25. So what I'm able to preach in three weeks won't even come close to tapping in to what's really here.

  26. So I encourage you to seek this passage out in your own study and ask the Lord to teach you from it.

  27. So Martin Luther, the reformer, he said about this prayer,

  28. It sounds so honest, so simple, yet it is so deep and so rich and so wide that no one can fathom it.

  29. This prayer does stand out as preeminent in God's Word.

  30. Philip Melanchthon, who was a friend of Luther's, another hero, if you would, of the Reformation.

  31. Before he passed away, before he died, he gave a final lecture to his students.

  32. And this was the passage that he preached on, John 17.

  33. And he stated this,

  34. And again, I feel very inadequate to explain or to reveal or try to expound on all that is in this.

  35. So please go and allow God just to work in your heart as you read it.

  36. But before we turn to the passage,

  37. I think it would be really important to understand one of the roles that our Lord Jesus plays in our life,

  38. a role that he fulfills, particularly exemplified in John 17,

  39. is that of the high priest, the great high priest.

  40. See, as sinners who are wretched, unclean, broken, and guilty before God,

  41. we are like in desperate, dire need of someone to come and intercede on our behalf before a holy God.

  42. So, praise be to God, that role is being fulfilled by our Lord Jesus.

  43. Scripture has much to say about Christ being our eternal, perfect high priest.

  44. The writer of Hebrews particularly goes at length to talk about how all the ministries of the Old Covenant,

  45. the tabernacle, the temple, the priesthood, the sacrifices,

  46. all these things were imperfect representations pointing toward a greater fulfillment.

  47. And we all know that all those things were brought to completion in Christ.

  48. Turn, if you would, just to Hebrews 7.

  49. But hold your hand, John 17, Hebrews 7.

  50. You see, all the animal sacrifices,

  51. all the high priests that were appointed in the Old Covenant,

  52. were imperfect in many, many ways.

  53. No animal sacrifice was good enough,

  54. because it couldn't suffer for human sins ultimately.

  55. It had no moral life.

  56. It couldn't bear the guilt of man.

  57. And sinful priests who served in the temple

  58. had to first make atonement for their own sins

  59. before they atoned for the other people's sins.

  60. So, they were imperfect,

  61. and they couldn't remain either because they were mortal.

  62. They died.

  63. And so, all these things, this imperfect system,

  64. was pointing toward a greater fulfillment in Christ.

  65. So, if you look at Hebrews 7, look at verse 23.

  66. It says,

  67. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest,

  68. holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners,

  69. and exalted above the heavens.

  70. He has no need, like those high priests,

  71. to offer sacrifices daily,

  72. first for his own sins,

  73. and then for the sins of those of the people,

  74. since he did not once for all,

  75. excuse me,

  76. for he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

  77. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests,

  78. but the word of the oath,

  79. which came later than the law,

  80. appoints a son,

  81. whom has been made perfect forever.

  82. So, Jesus fulfilled all these things.

  83. He was sinless,

  84. so he had no need to offer a sacrifice for himself.

  85. This is what our passage teaches.

  86. So, he became the final sacrifice.

  87. Furthermore, he was immortal.

  88. He never had to be replaced.

  89. So, he is the one eternal mediator between man and God.

  90. And lastly, he became human,

  91. so he could bear the sins of humans.

  92. And so, the writer goes on to say,

  93. in chapter 8, verses 1 and 2,

  94. Now, the point that we are trying to make is this.

  95. We're trying to tell you this.

  96. Do we have such a high priest,

  97. one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the majesty in heaven,

  98. a minister in the holy places,

  99. in the true tent that the Lord set up,

  100. and not man.

  101. So, Christ is interceding on our behalf.

  102. Can you imagine going to a courtroom of God,

  103. being utterly guilty before him,

  104. and having no one to plead your cause?

  105. Jesus is doing this.

  106. For those of us who are found in him,

  107. he is our high priest.

  108. Paul echoes this sentiment,

  109. this idea, this truth in Romans 8.

  110. Something that most of us might look over,

  111. because Romans 8 is so familiar,

  112. we're always trying to get to the end of Romans 8,

  113. which is like the big, you know, huge punch at the end.

  114. But have you ever noticed,

  115. in Romans 8, 33, it says,

  116. Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?

  117. It is God who justifies.

  118. Who is to condemn?

  119. Christ Jesus, the one who died.

  120. And here it is.

  121. More than that.

  122. Who was raised at the right hand of God?

  123. Who indeed is interceding for us?

  124. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  125. So Christ is our great, eternal, sympathetic high priest.

  126. And that's why John 17 is such a huge glimpse

  127. of his intercessory work.

  128. Think about this.

  129. He's only moments from being betrayed,

  130. arrested, beaten,

  131. treated so unjustly,

  132. and crucified.

  133. All that's right in front of him.

  134. So if you were praying,

  135. what would you mainly be praying for

  136. in that time?

  137. God help me.

  138. God help me.

  139. God help me.

  140. Probably.

  141. But isn't it amazing

  142. that the bulk of this prayer,

  143. probably three quarters of it,

  144. is him interceding for his disciples

  145. and for us?

  146. It's not for his own.

  147. He's not trying to pray for his own sake.

  148. He understands what is coming.

  149. So we see a glimpse of the heart of Jesus

  150. for his people

  151. as he's interceding for them

  152. in John 17.

  153. So what a Savior,

  154. an intercessor,

  155. we have on our behalf.

  156. John wrote in his letter,

  157. Little children,

  158. I'm writing these things to you

  159. so that you may not sin.

  160. But then he throws in there,

  161. but if anyone does sin,

  162. don't panic.

  163. It's okay.

  164. Because you have an advocate

  165. with the Father,

  166. Jesus Christ the righteous.

  167. So Jesus is standing in that gap

  168. praying for us.

  169. And as I said last week,

  170. the magnitude of this,

  171. and next week we'll look at

  172. the final section of this

  173. where Jesus is actually praying

  174. for us today.

  175. All those who would come

  176. to believe in him.

  177. That is astounding to me.

  178. Robert Murray McShane,

  179. a young Scottish pastor

  180. in the 1800s,

  181. he died at a young age

  182. of tuberculosis,

  183. so lung problem,

  184. so I have a lot in common with him,

  185. because I probably would have died

  186. about the same age

  187. that he did from lung issues

  188. had I not had a transplant.

  189. But something that he said,

  190. he preached a sermon on John 17,

  191. and I'll repeat this next week

  192. because this is such a powerful statement to me.

  193. He says,

  194. If I could hear Christ praying for me

  195. in the next room,

  196. I would not fear a million enemies.

  197. Yet distance makes no difference.

  198. He is praying for me.

  199. I pray that

  200. that just resonates in us.

  201. So, today we'll look at

  202. the second section of

  203. John 17.

  204. Just because it's just a few verses,

  205. I'll read 1-5,

  206. and this is

  207. the outline of the prayers

  208. in 1-5,

  209. Jesus is praying

  210. for himself

  211. and talking about

  212. the Father's glory

  213. and his own glory.

  214. That's what we looked at last week.

  215. We did a huge introduction

  216. to this last week,

  217. so you can go back

  218. and listen to that.

  219. And then the second part

  220. of his prayer,

  221. which we'll look at today,

  222. is 6-19,

  223. and he's praying for his disciples.

  224. And the key word in this

  225. is this idea of preservation.

  226. And then next week,

  227. the idea of future believers.

  228. verse 1 says,

  229. when Jesus has spoken these words,

  230. he lifted up his eyes to heaven

  231. and said,

  232. Father,

  233. the hour has come.

  234. Glorify your Son,

  235. that the Son may glorify you,

  236. since you have given him authority

  237. over all flesh,

  238. to give eternal life

  239. to all whom you have given him.

  240. And this is eternal life,

  241. that they know you,

  242. the only true God,

  243. and Jesus Christ,

  244. whom you have sent.

  245. I glorified you on the earth,

  246. having accomplished the work

  247. that you gave me to do.

  248. And now,

  249. Father,

  250. glorify me in your own presence

  251. with the glory that I had with you

  252. before the world existed.

  253. I have manifested your name

  254. to the people

  255. whom you gave me

  256. out of the world.

  257. Yours they were,

  258. and you gave them to me,

  259. and they have kept your word.

  260. Now they know that everything

  261. that you have given me

  262. is from you.

  263. For I have given them

  264. the words that you gave me,

  265. and they received them,

  266. and have come to know in truth

  267. that I have came from you,

  268. and they have believed

  269. that you sent me.

  270. I am praying for them.

  271. I am not praying for the world,

  272. but for those that you have given me,

  273. for they are yours.

  274. All mine are yours,

  275. and yours are mine,

  276. and I am glorified in them.

  277. And I am no longer in the world,

  278. but they are in the world,

  279. and I am coming to you.

  280. Holy Father,

  281. keep them in your name,

  282. which you have given me,

  283. that they may be one,

  284. as we are one.

  285. While I was with them,

  286. I kept them in your name,

  287. which you have given me.

  288. I guarded them,

  289. and not one of them

  290. has been lost,

  291. except the son of destruction,

  292. that the scripture

  293. might be fulfilled.

  294. But now I am coming to you,

  295. and these things

  296. I speak in the world,

  297. that they may have my joy

  298. fulfilled in themselves.

  299. I have given them your word,

  300. and the world has hated them,

  301. because they are not of the world,

  302. just as I am not of the world.

  303. I do not ask

  304. that you would take them

  305. out of the world,

  306. but that you would keep them

  307. from the evil one.

  308. They are not of the world,

  309. just as I am not of the world.

  310. Lord,

  311. sanctify them in the truth.

  312. Your word is truth.

  313. As you sent me into the world,

  314. so I sent them into the world.

  315. And for their sake,

  316. I consecrate myself,

  317. that they may also

  318. be sanctified in truth.

  319. Pray with me, please.

  320. Lord, we,

  321. upon looking at these words,

  322. and just are amazed

  323. at how much you care

  324. about your people.

  325. And Lord,

  326. I just ask that you would

  327. teach us in this time

  328. that we wouldn't walk away

  329. from this hour the same,

  330. that you would renew our hearts,

  331. our minds,

  332. refresh our souls to go out

  333. and to live for you

  334. with the confidence

  335. of knowing that you pray for us.

  336. In Jesus' name, amen.

  337. So,

  338. a few things

  339. we're going to look at.

  340. We're going to break them down

  341. into the two statements,

  342. and then underneath

  343. those two statements,

  344. a couple of things.

  345. I'll give them to you first, though.

  346. The first one is,

  347. Jesus affirms them

  348. as genuine apostles.

  349. Jesus affirms them

  350. as genuine apostles.

  351. That's the first thing

  352. that we see.

  353. And then secondly,

  354. Jesus prayed

  355. that they be kept

  356. by His Father.

  357. Okay, so those are

  358. the two main points.

  359. And underneath those two,

  360. we're going to have

  361. a couple others.

  362. But to the first point,

  363. Jesus affirms them

  364. as genuine apostles.

  365. So, underneath that,

  366. we see in verses 7 and 8,

  367. if you'll look at 7 and 8,

  368. we see that it's because

  369. because of their faith

  370. in Him as the Son.

  371. Because of their faith

  372. in Him as the Son,

  373. He affirms them

  374. as genuine apostles.

  375. So, though they had been

  376. with Jesus for several years,

  377. they had followed Him,

  378. they had seen Him

  379. work miracles,

  380. they had heard Him preach,

  381. they saw how He lived,

  382. He walked with them

  383. on a daily basis.

  384. They had some understanding

  385. of who He was

  386. and the mission He was on.

  387. But, and then there were occasions

  388. where they kind of revealed that,

  389. that they knew who He was.

  390. But the full measuring

  391. of who He was

  392. had not yet been revealed to them.

  393. But in this case,

  394. as we see in verse 7,

  395. He's like,

  396. now they know

  397. that everything you have given Me

  398. is from you.

  399. So they were beginning

  400. to really clearly understand

  401. who He was.

  402. and they believed,

  403. they believed in Him

  404. as the Messiah.

  405. And they believed

  406. that He came down

  407. from the Father

  408. to be the Savior.

  409. And Jesus,

  410. while He was with them,

  411. He says,

  412. I manifested

  413. who you were, Father,

  414. to them.

  415. One, because He was

  416. the Son of God incarnate.

  417. He was walking among them.

  418. He was the visual

  419. representation of the Father.

  420. Jesus said in John earlier,

  421. if you have seen Me,

  422. you have seen the Father.

  423. And putting Himself

  424. pretty much

  425. on the level of God.

  426. So He walked among them.

  427. He manifested His name to them.

  428. And they believed.

  429. And they obeyed.

  430. And they kept His Word.

  431. They followed Him.

  432. So that's the first reason

  433. they are affirmed

  434. to genuine apostles,

  435. because of their faith in Him.

  436. But,

  437. one that we will spend

  438. some more time on

  439. underneath this,

  440. so part B, if you would.

  441. Because they were given to Him

  442. by the Father.

  443. Alright?

  444. They were affirmed

  445. as real, genuine apostles

  446. because they were given to Him

  447. by the Father.

  448. So look at verse 6.

  449. He says,

  450. I've manifested Your name

  451. to the people

  452. who You gave Me

  453. out of the world.

  454. Yours they were,

  455. and You gave them to Me.

  456. And they have kept Your Word.

  457. And if you jump down

  458. to verse 9,

  459. I am praying for them.

  460. I am not praying

  461. for the world,

  462. but those whom You have given Me,

  463. for they are Yours.

  464. All Mine are Yours,

  465. and Yours are Mine,

  466. and I am glorified in them.

  467. So,

  468. there's another reason

  469. this idea

  470. that being genuine disciples

  471. is affirmed.

  472. In fact,

  473. it's really the source

  474. of the first reason.

  475. So,

  476. notice really carefully here

  477. that these words

  478. that are used,

  479. the disciples receiving,

  480. knowing,

  481. and believing in Jesus

  482. that you see

  483. in verses 7 and 8.

  484. Notice how 7 and 8

  485. is kind of sandwiched

  486. in between

  487. verses 2 and 6,

  488. 9 and 10,

  489. which revealed

  490. that the Father

  491. has chosen,

  492. elected a people

  493. out of the world

  494. and has given them

  495. to the Son

  496. to manifest Himself to.

  497. Now,

  498. I know that

  499. now that some of the hair

  500. is standing up

  501. on some of your necks,

  502. things,

  503. I want to just go ahead

  504. and throw out there

  505. that though I believe

  506. that in this passage

  507. elsewhere in Scripture

  508. that the doctrines

  509. of election

  510. and particular atonement

  511. are here

  512. before us today,

  513. that's not the only point

  514. of this message.

  515. And I'm not going to just

  516. make that a soapbox,

  517. but it is here,

  518. so we are going to deal

  519. with it,

  520. but my calendar is open

  521. for if you'd like

  522. to hang out

  523. and just talk about

  524. this stuff

  525. and look at God's Word.

  526. But what Jesus

  527. is saying here,

  528. in other words,

  529. is that their faith

  530. in Him

  531. is the result of,

  532. evidenced of,

  533. the Father's choosing them

  534. and giving them

  535. to the Son.

  536. This is what we see

  537. in our text.

  538. It's repeated three times

  539. in this whole prayer.

  540. This idea of the Father

  541. giving a people

  542. to the Son.

  543. So earlier in John 15,

  544. Jesus said to His disciples,

  545. You did not choose Me,

  546. but I chose you

  547. and appointed you

  548. to go and bear fruit.

  549. And remember,

  550. their faith in Him,

  551. again,

  552. a result of the Father's

  553. electing them.

  554. Earlier in Matthew 16,

  555. this is very clearly shown.

  556. Simon Peter,

  557. Jesus is asking people,

  558. Who do people say

  559. that I am?

  560. And He threw out

  561. some things

  562. and then He asked,

  563. Who do you say I am?

  564. And Simon Peter said to Him,

  565. You are the Christ,

  566. the Son of the living God.

  567. And Jesus answered him

  568. and said,

  569. Blessed are you,

  570. Simon Barjona,

  571. for flesh and blood

  572. has not revealed this to you.

  573. You didn't figure this out,

  574. in other words.

  575. But my Father,

  576. who is in heaven,

  577. has revealed this to you.

  578. So,

  579. the truth that God

  580. has graciously,

  581. emphasized that word,

  582. graciously,

  583. mercifully,

  584. chosen a people

  585. to give to the Son

  586. to save,

  587. is repeated three times

  588. in John 17.

  589. And again,

  590. it's not the focal point

  591. of this whole prayer,

  592. but it's a big part

  593. of this prayer.

  594. So,

  595. you may think,

  596. wait a minute,

  597. these verses have to do

  598. with the disciples

  599. being chosen

  600. and given to the Son.

  601. So,

  602. surely that doesn't mean

  603. that all believers

  604. come to faith

  605. in the same way.

  606. that's not true

  607. for all Christians.

  608. I used to argue that way

  609. until I read the rest

  610. of the prayer

  611. in verse 20,

  612. where Jesus turns

  613. His attention

  614. to all believers,

  615. like you and I,

  616. and He says

  617. in verse 24,

  618. Father,

  619. I desire that they also

  620. whom You have given Me.

  621. So,

  622. this is

  623. all of us.

  624. It was God's

  625. eternal plan

  626. to mercifully

  627. call out a people

  628. for salvation,

  629. to give them

  630. eternal life

  631. through the ministry

  632. of His Son.

  633. So,

  634. remember that

  635. as you read

  636. the Scripture,

  637. think of the idea

  638. that redemption

  639. is a Trinitarian effort.

  640. It wasn't just

  641. the Father,

  642. it wasn't just

  643. the Son,

  644. and it wasn't

  645. just the Spirit.

  646. It was all three

  647. of them playing

  648. a unique role

  649. in our redemption.

  650. And the Father's

  651. role in this

  652. was that He

  653. planned,

  654. ordained,

  655. the plan

  656. of redemption.

  657. He chose

  658. those whom

  659. He would give

  660. to the Son.

  661. The Son came

  662. and He died

  663. on behalf

  664. of those people.

  665. And the Spirit

  666. now regenerates

  667. those people.

  668. It is,

  669. He applies

  670. the work

  671. of the Trinity,

  672. the Holy Spirit.

  673. So,

  674. you may again

  675. say,

  676. wait a minute,

  677. doesn't Jesus

  678. love the world.

  679. Right?

  680. John 3,

  681. 16.

  682. Very,

  683. very clever.

  684. So,

  685. I've heard

  686. many people say,

  687. Jesus loves

  688. the entire

  689. world.

  690. He loves

  691. all people,

  692. even from

  693. Adolf Hitler

  694. to Mother Teresa.

  695. Jesus,

  696. their love

  697. is no different.

  698. So,

  699. I would just

  700. argue with you

  701. humbly,

  702. like no,

  703. no,

  704. Jesus did not

  705. come to save

  706. every single

  707. person in the

  708. world.

  709. And though God

  710. does have a

  711. certain care,

  712. a certain love

  713. for the world

  714. in general,

  715. He has a

  716. very specific,

  717. very unique

  718. care for

  719. His people.

  720. right?

  721. The special

  722. fellowship that

  723. exists between

  724. the Savior

  725. and those He

  726. came to save.

  727. So,

  728. what I'm trying

  729. to tell you

  730. is that Jesus'

  731. atonement was

  732. an exact

  733. atonement,

  734. not a potential

  735. atonement.

  736. Can you imagine

  737. the Father

  738. sending His

  739. Son to the

  740. earth to

  741. die a

  742. terrible,

  743. wretched

  744. death,

  745. shedding

  746. His precious

  747. blood,

  748. and then

  749. just saying

  750. to Jesus,

  751. I hope

  752. some people

  753. make the

  754. most of

  755. this sacrifice

  756. you made.

  757. I really

  758. hope they

  759. do.

  760. No.

  761. No.

  762. The blood

  763. of the Son

  764. is far too

  765. precious to be

  766. wasted.

  767. And so,

  768. we all believe

  769. that the

  770. atonement of

  771. Jesus is

  772. limited in

  773. some way.

  774. we know

  775. according to

  776. the Scripture,

  777. and indeed

  778. just looking

  779. at our own

  780. lives,

  781. that not all

  782. people will

  783. have eternal

  784. life.

  785. We know

  786. that some

  787. will be

  788. separated

  789. from God

  790. because of

  791. their willful

  792. sin and

  793. rebellion.

  794. We know

  795. that.

  796. We know

  797. that some

  798. people are

  799. going to

  800. perish.

  801. So,

  802. if you

  803. believe that

  804. Christ's

  805. atonement was

  806. for the

  807. entire world,

  808. for every

  809. single person

  810. ever to

  811. walk,

  812. then it

  813. was limited

  814. in its

  815. power.

  816. because it's

  817. not going

  818. to save

  819. everybody.

  820. But I

  821. believe the

  822. Scripture

  823. teaches,

  824. not as here

  825. in John 17,

  826. but everywhere,

  827. that the

  828. atonement was

  829. limited not in

  830. its power,

  831. but its

  832. extension.

  833. It was given

  834. to save those

  835. exactly who it

  836. was meant to

  837. save.

  838. The blood of

  839. Christ made

  840. an exact

  841. purchase.

  842. It wasn't

  843. wasted on

  844. some and

  845. then made

  846. much of

  847. by others.

  848. I believe

  849. that the

  850. Father

  851. honored the

  852. sacrifice of

  853. His Son and

  854. gave Him a

  855. people to

  856. become His

  857. bride to

  858. save.

  859. And again,

  860. if you look

  861. at Romans 9,

  862. read Romans 9,

  863. there's an

  864. argument,

  865. this idea of

  866. that's not

  867. fair.

  868. God is

  869. being unjust.

  870. He's being

  871. not right in

  872. doing that.

  873. if He's

  874. going to

  875. save people,

  876. He needs

  877. to save

  878. us all.

  879. Well,

  880. first of all,

  881. know that

  882. sinful man is

  883. in no

  884. position to

  885. accuse God

  886. of being

  887. unjust.

  888. I am

  889. not.

  890. I wouldn't.

  891. I can't

  892. imagine me

  893. pointing a

  894. finger at God

  895. and saying,

  896. you are

  897. unjust and

  898. I am

  899. right.

  900. And that's

  901. an argument

  902. that Paul

  903. makes.

  904. Who are

  905. you,

  906. oh man,

  907. to talk to

  908. God that

  909. way.

  910. But I

  911. want to

  912. paint the

  913. picture for

  914. you this

  915. way.

  916. In our

  917. Western

  918. democratic

  919. minds,

  920. we have

  921. a skewed

  922. view in

  923. some ways

  924. of what

  925. justice

  926. means.

  927. But in

  928. the ancient

  929. and the

  930. medieval

  931. world,

  932. this was

  933. very clearly

  934. seen.

  935. But we

  936. know that

  937. a king

  938. or an

  939. emperor

  940. would also

  941. serve as

  942. a judge

  943. over his

  944. people.

  945. And many,

  946. many times,

  947. like there are

  948. examples of

  949. the Bible

  950. of this.

  951. I could

  952. give you a

  953. lot of

  954. examples of

  955. history,

  956. but you

  957. would all

  958. fall asleep.

  959. But there

  960. are examples

  961. when a

  962. king or

  963. an emperor

  964. would be

  965. presented

  966. with a

  967. whole band

  968. of rebels

  969. or criminals.

  970. All guilty.

  971. All have

  972. come against

  973. the king.

  974. And sometimes

  975. this is what

  976. would happen.

  977. The king

  978. would say

  979. something along

  980. the lines

  981. of,

  982. all of you

  983. have rebelled

  984. against me.

  985. All of you

  986. are guilty.

  987. None of

  988. you deserve

  989. to live.

  990. True,

  991. right?

  992. They're all

  993. guilty.

  994. But then he

  995. would say

  996. something like

  997. this,

  998. but because

  999. I am a

  1000. merciful king,

  1001. because I

  1002. desire to

  1003. show my

  1004. people that

  1005. I am

  1006. merciful,

  1007. I will

  1008. pardon you

  1009. and you,

  1010. but the

  1011. rest of

  1012. you get

  1013. the sword.

  1014. Because I

  1015. also need to

  1016. show my

  1017. people that

  1018. I am not

  1019. a pushover

  1020. and that

  1021. I take

  1022. this sin

  1023. very

  1024. seriously.

  1025. And so

  1026. at that

  1027. same time,

  1028. that king

  1029. would have

  1030. demonstrated

  1031. his justice

  1032. and his

  1033. mercy with

  1034. one act.

  1035. And can

  1036. you imagine

  1037. the ones

  1038. who were

  1039. spared just

  1040. standing there

  1041. trembling,

  1042. saying,

  1043. why me?

  1044. Like,

  1045. why was I

  1046. spared and

  1047. not this

  1048. other?

  1049. And that

  1050. is the

  1051. position that

  1052. we are

  1053. in.

  1054. If you

  1055. think that

  1056. you could

  1057. walk up to

  1058. God and

  1059. be like,

  1060. I deserve

  1061. mercy.

  1062. This person

  1063. deserves

  1064. mercy.

  1065. None of

  1066. you would

  1067. stand.

  1068. None of

  1069. us would

  1070. make it.

  1071. The king

  1072. is merciful.

  1073. So we

  1074. are not

  1075. in the

  1076. position of

  1077. an innocent,

  1078. sweet,

  1079. deserving

  1080. child of

  1081. God's mercy.

  1082. We are

  1083. all rebels,

  1084. criminals,

  1085. all deserving

  1086. justice.

  1087. But,

  1088. because he

  1089. is merciful,

  1090. he has

  1091. showed us

  1092. justice,

  1093. or showed

  1094. us mercy.

  1095. So,

  1096. a lot

  1097. in all

  1098. of that.

  1099. But what

  1100. I am

  1101. trying to

  1102. say is

  1103. that Jesus

  1104. came here

  1105. to die

  1106. for those

  1107. that the

  1108. Father had

  1109. given him.

  1110. Right?

  1111. It is all

  1112. in John

  1113. 17 and

  1114. other places

  1115. in the

  1116. Gospel of

  1117. John.

  1118. So,

  1119. that is

  1120. the first

  1121. part.

  1122. Jesus

  1123. affirms

  1124. them as

  1125. genuine

  1126. disciples.

  1127. And he

  1128. does it

  1129. because of

  1130. their faith

  1131. in him,

  1132. but even

  1133. underneath

  1134. that,

  1135. because the

  1136. Father had

  1137. given them

  1138. to him

  1139. as a

  1140. gift.

  1141. This

  1142. brings us

  1143. to our

  1144. second

  1145. point.

  1146. We see

  1147. this in

  1148. verses 11

  1149. through 16,

  1150. that Jesus

  1151. prays that

  1152. they be

  1153. kept by

  1154. his Father.

  1155. So,

  1156. underneath

  1157. this,

  1158. this idea

  1159. of being

  1160. kept by

  1161. the Father,

  1162. he prays

  1163. for a

  1164. couple of

  1165. things.

  1166. First,

  1167. spiritual

  1168. protection.

  1169. Spiritual

  1170. protection.

  1171. 11

  1172. through 16,

  1173. he identifies

  1174. two

  1175. enemies,

  1176. two things

  1177. that are

  1178. going to

  1179. come against

  1180. them.

  1181. The first,

  1182. he says,

  1183. is the

  1184. world,

  1185. the

  1186. cosmos,

  1187. the

  1188. established

  1189. order.

  1190. It's not

  1191. speaking of

  1192. like the

  1193. beauty of

  1194. creation or

  1195. the order

  1196. that God

  1197. has created

  1198. in the

  1199. universe.

  1200. It's not

  1201. what it's

  1202. saying.

  1203. The world

  1204. in this

  1205. way is

  1206. being used

  1207. in a

  1208. way of

  1209. displaying

  1210. ungodly

  1211. ideology,

  1212. things that

  1213. have alienated

  1214. itself from

  1215. its creator.

  1216. It's a

  1217. way of

  1218. fallen,

  1219. sinful,

  1220. organized

  1221. system of

  1222. human

  1223. civilization

  1224. that sets

  1225. itself

  1226. against

  1227. God.

  1228. And that's

  1229. all around

  1230. us.

  1231. We just

  1232. got to

  1233. open our

  1234. eyes and

  1235. see how

  1236. the world

  1237. is against

  1238. God,

  1239. against

  1240. everything

  1241. we stand

  1242. for.

  1243. That's

  1244. the

  1245. cosmos,

  1246. is this

  1247. idea of

  1248. everything,

  1249. being against

  1250. God,

  1251. a world

  1252. hostile to

  1253. its creator.

  1254. So,

  1255. he prays

  1256. for their

  1257. protection from

  1258. the world.

  1259. Something I

  1260. might not have

  1261. mentioned a

  1262. second ago was,

  1263. do you notice

  1264. that Jesus

  1265. says in this

  1266. prayer,

  1267. I am not

  1268. praying for

  1269. the world?

  1270. He said

  1271. twice.

  1272. I'm not

  1273. praying for

  1274. every single

  1275. individual,

  1276. but I'm

  1277. praying for

  1278. those that

  1279. you gave

  1280. me out

  1281. of the

  1282. world.

  1283. So,

  1284. he's not

  1285. praying for

  1286. the cosmos.

  1287. And then

  1288. secondly,

  1289. we see he

  1290. talks about

  1291. protecting them

  1292. from the

  1293. evil one.

  1294. Satan,

  1295. the adversary

  1296. who prowls

  1297. around like a

  1298. roaring lion,

  1299. seeking someone

  1300. to devour.

  1301. The devil,

  1302. which means the

  1303. slanderer,

  1304. the accuser,

  1305. who hurls up

  1306. accusations at

  1307. us and at

  1308. God.

  1309. But one name

  1310. that kind

  1311. of stands

  1312. out of

  1313. Satan's

  1314. that I

  1315. think is

  1316. really

  1317. important,

  1318. at least

  1319. according to

  1320. John 17,

  1321. is that he

  1322. is called in

  1323. Revelation the

  1324. accuser of

  1325. the brethren

  1326. who brings

  1327. up charges

  1328. against us

  1329. day and

  1330. night.

  1331. That's

  1332. Revelation 12,

  1333. 10.

  1334. And so,

  1335. though we

  1336. know,

  1337. if you keep

  1338. reading in that

  1339. chapter,

  1340. that Satan

  1341. no longer

  1342. has access

  1343. to God's

  1344. presence,

  1345. we do get

  1346. a picture

  1347. of who he

  1348. is.

  1349. It betrays

  1350. Satan as

  1351. the anti-intercessor.

  1352. So if Jesus

  1353. is interceding

  1354. for us,

  1355. Satan was

  1356. accusing us,

  1357. saying he

  1358. has done

  1359. this,

  1360. she has

  1361. done this,

  1362. right?

  1363. So he's

  1364. like the

  1365. anti-intercessor

  1366. in this way.

  1367. So,

  1368. but again,

  1369. Christ is

  1370. pleading our

  1371. cause and

  1372. the Father

  1373. listens to

  1374. his Son.

  1375. Awesome.

  1376. And so,

  1377. it talks

  1378. about the

  1379. world and

  1380. the devil

  1381. hating,

  1382. hating them.

  1383. That is

  1384. this idea

  1385. of like

  1386. someone

  1387. pursuing

  1388. another with

  1389. great,

  1390. intense

  1391. hatred.

  1392. Like so

  1393. hateful that

  1394. you're going

  1395. to like

  1396. go after

  1397. them,

  1398. hatred.

  1399. A detest

  1400. to detest.

  1401. And Jesus

  1402. knows that

  1403. their love

  1404. and their

  1405. obedience to

  1406. him is

  1407. going to

  1408. collide with

  1409. the world

  1410. that hates

  1411. God.

  1412. He knows

  1413. that.

  1414. Hold your

  1415. hand,

  1416. John 17,

  1417. and flip

  1418. back two

  1419. chapters to

  1420. John 15.

  1421. So Jesus

  1422. has been

  1423. telling them

  1424. this.

  1425. He's been

  1426. doing a lot

  1427. to prepare

  1428. them.

  1429. John 15,

    John 15:18

  1430. verse 18.

  1431. He says,

  1432. if the world

  1433. hates you,

  1434. know that

  1435. it hated

  1436. me before

  1437. it hated

  1438. you.

  1439. If you

  1440. were of

  1441. the world,

  1442. the world

  1443. would love

  1444. you as

  1445. its own,

  1446. but because

  1447. you are

  1448. not of

  1449. the world,

  1450. but I

  1451. chose you

  1452. out of

  1453. the world.

  1454. Therefore,

  1455. the world

  1456. hates you.

  1457. Remember

  1458. the word

  1459. that I

  1460. said to

  1461. you,

  1462. a servant

  1463. is not

  1464. greater

  1465. than his

  1466. master.

  1467. If they

  1468. persecute

  1469. me,

  1470. they will

  1471. also

  1472. persecute

  1473. you.

  1474. If they

  1475. kept my

  1476. word,

  1477. they would

  1478. also keep

  1479. yours.

  1480. But all

  1481. these things

  1482. they do,

  1483. do to you

  1484. on the

  1485. account of

  1486. my name

  1487. because they

  1488. do not

  1489. know him

  1490. who sent

  1491. me.

  1492. So,

  1493. Jesus had

  1494. been warning

  1495. them,

  1496. this is going

  1497. to come.

  1498. So he was

  1499. telling them

  1500. that,

  1501. you know,

  1502. horizontally,

  1503. and now he's

  1504. praying about

  1505. it vertically.

  1506. This is going

  1507. to come.

  1508. So,

  1509. Lord,

  1510. Father,

  1511. protect them

  1512. against the

  1513. persecution

  1514. that is

  1515. coming.

  1516. So,

  1517. but what does

  1518. this mean?

  1519. Jesus isn't

  1520. praying.

  1521. He says

  1522. right there

  1523. that,

  1524. I'm not

  1525. praying that

  1526. they will

  1527. be taken

  1528. out of

  1529. the world.

  1530. So he's

  1531. not in

  1532. a position

  1533. of an

  1534. overindulgent

  1535. parent trying

  1536. to protect

  1537. their child

  1538. from any

  1539. kind of

  1540. trouble

  1541. in the

  1542. world.

  1543. That's

  1544. not how

  1545. he's

  1546. approaching.

  1547. He knows

  1548. that persecution

  1549. will come.

  1550. Rather,

  1551. he's praying

  1552. that they

  1553. would

  1554. persevere,

  1555. remain

  1556. steadfast

  1557. in him,

  1558. and then

  1559. triumph in

  1560. him.

  1561. So real

  1562. genuine love

  1563. for Christ

  1564. will incur

  1565. opposition

  1566. from the

  1567. world.

  1568. Paul wrote,

  1569. indeed,

  1570. all those who

  1571. wish to live

  1572. a godly

  1573. life in

  1574. Christ Jesus

  1575. will be

  1576. persecuted.

  1577. persecuted.

  1578. So it's

  1579. not an

  1580. overindulgent

  1581. protective

  1582. parent.

  1583. It should

  1584. be more

  1585. seen as

  1586. a general

  1587. who loves

  1588. and cares

  1589. about his

  1590. soldiers,

  1591. but he

  1592. sends them

  1593. out on a

  1594. really dangerous

  1595. mission because

  1596. that mission

  1597. is so

  1598. important.

  1599. But yet he

  1600. equips them

  1601. for that

  1602. mission,

  1603. gives them

  1604. all they

  1605. need,

  1606. and then

  1607. promises

  1608. them that

  1609. they will

  1610. have victory

  1611. in the end,

  1612. that this

  1613. is not a

  1614. losing battle

  1615. that they

  1616. are fighting.

  1617. And in

  1618. fact,

  1619. he's not an

  1620. armchair

  1621. general either.

  1622. He's actually

  1623. leading the

  1624. way by

  1625. going himself

  1626. first to

  1627. the cross.

  1628. So he's

  1629. prepared that

  1630. way, going

  1631. before them,

  1632. showing them

  1633. that example.

  1634. So that's

  1635. the prayer he's

  1636. making, that

  1637. they will

  1638. persevere,

  1639. they will

  1640. remain

  1641. steadfast,

  1642. and that he

  1643. prays that his

  1644. father would

  1645. keep them.

  1646. He says the

  1647. only person

  1648. that was

  1649. lost was

  1650. Judas Iscariot,

  1651. if you see

  1652. that in our

  1653. passage.

  1654. So on

  1655. several occasions

  1656. though, so

  1657. know this, I

  1658. heard a preacher

  1659. on radio many

  1660. years ago talk

  1661. about how we

  1662. could lose

  1663. our salvation,

  1664. and he was

  1665. using Judas

  1666. as an example.

  1667. And that is,

  1668. it's like, have

  1669. you read the

  1670. rest of John

  1671. where Jesus

  1672. repeatedly says,

  1673. this one does

  1674. not belong to

  1675. me?

  1676. Like it's very

  1677. clear that Judas

  1678. never belonged

  1679. to Jesus.

  1680. Though salvation

  1681. is secure for

  1682. true believers,

  1683. scripture warns

  1684. that faith that

  1685. many people have

  1686. in Christ is

  1687. not genuine,

  1688. and that it

  1689. won't persevere,

  1690. especially under

  1691. a trial.

  1692. And so Jesus

  1693. says that Judas

  1694. did this in

  1695. fulfillment of

  1696. scripture.

  1697. Psalm 41,

  1698. 9 and others

  1699. talk about how

  1700. the Messiah

  1701. would be

  1702. betrayed.

  1703. But Jesus

  1704. is saying he

  1705. never belonged

  1706. to me in the

  1707. first place.

  1708. So he didn't

  1709. have it, and

  1710. then lost it, he

  1711. never had it in

  1712. the first place.

  1713. So Jesus told

  1714. them earlier,

  1715. if you continue

  1716. in my word,

  1717. then you're

  1718. truly my

  1719. disciples.

  1720. Judas did not

  1721. persevere.

  1722. And so,

  1723. again,

  1724. understand that

  1725. God's electing

  1726. and choosing

  1727. is so key

  1728. to us

  1729. keeping our

  1730. salvation.

  1731. All right?

  1732. I want you to,

  1733. I want to unpack

  1734. this for you a

  1735. little bit.

  1736. Their spiritual

  1737. protection, the

  1738. disciples and

  1739. ours, is not

  1740. based on our

  1741. resolve, our

  1742. willpower, but

  1743. fully on God's

  1744. redemptive work.

  1745. Jesus repeats

  1746. that twice in our

  1747. text.

  1748. He says, keep

  1749. them, guard

  1750. them in your

  1751. name.

  1752. So there are

  1753. two things in

  1754. this.

  1755. He says, by the

  1756. power of your

  1757. name.

  1758. In the ancient

  1759. world, a person's

  1760. name stood for

  1761. who they were

  1762. and what they

  1763. represented.

  1764. And so,

  1765. someone like

  1766. Caesar, his

  1767. name would be

  1768. powerful and

  1769. would provide a

  1770. ton of protection

  1771. for those under

  1772. that name.

  1773. So, but

  1774. there's no more

  1775. powerful name in

  1776. the universe or

  1777. in existence in

  1778. God's name.

  1779. Proverbs 18.10

  1780. says, the name

  1781. of the Lord is

  1782. a strong tower.

  1783. The righteous

  1784. man runs to

  1785. it and is

  1786. safe.

  1787. So he says,

  1788. keep them safe

  1789. by the power of

  1790. your name.

  1791. And then

  1792. secondly, and I

  1793. think this is so

  1794. cool, that Jesus

  1795. says that they

  1796. will be protected

  1797. by their being

  1798. one, spiritually

  1799. unified in him.

  1800. we see in

  1801. various ways

  1802. throughout this

  1803. prayer, the

  1804. indwelling of

  1805. believers by the

  1806. Father and the

  1807. Son.

  1808. So, if you

  1809. can, just look at

  1810. John 17 and try

  1811. to follow this.

  1812. 21 and 23

  1813. indicate that the

  1814. Father is in

  1815. the Son.

  1816. And then you

  1817. add to that

  1818. verse 21,

  1819. where it says

  1820. the Son is in

  1821. the Father.

  1822. And also in

  1823. verse 21,

  1824. believers are in

  1825. the Father and

  1826. the Son.

  1827. And then you

  1828. add, 23 and

  1829. 26, the Son is

  1830. in all believers.

  1831. You see that?

  1832. It's just like

  1833. this indwelling,

  1834. this unity, us

  1835. being united to

  1836. the Father and

  1837. the Son.

  1838. If that is true,

  1839. that is a safe,

  1840. secure, impenetrable

  1841. place to be.

  1842. That is our

  1843. unity to Christ.

  1844. The faith that

  1845. we have that

  1846. unifies us to

  1847. Christ.

  1848. So, all being

  1849. kept by God's

  1850. power.

  1851. And this is what

  1852. I was getting

  1853. at a second ago.

  1854. If salvation is

  1855. synergistic,

  1856. meaning that we

  1857. cooperate with

  1858. God, he comes

  1859. to the table,

  1860. presents his

  1861. deal, and says,

  1862. look, you're in

  1863. trouble.

  1864. And here's my

  1865. deal.

  1866. So, if you

  1867. take my son, I'll

  1868. save you.

  1869. But you probably

  1870. have to be, you're

1871. going to have to be

  1872. humble and wise to

  1873. probably take my

  1874. son.

  1875. So, but that's the

  1876. deal I'm presenting

  1877. you.

  1878. Take it or leave

  1879. it.

1880. If you take it, I

  1881. reward you with

  1882. salvation.

  1883. The problem,

  1884. though, is that

  1885. though God would

  1886. keep his end of

  1887. the bargain, man

  1888. can surely violate

  1889. his.

  1890. His end of the

  1891. contract.

  1892. Might not be

  1893. upheld.

  1894. So, therefore,

  1895. this idea of

  1896. us discussing

  1897. the ultimate

  1898. security of the

  1899. believer, it

  1900. lies in the

  1901. Father.

  1902. Do you see that?

  1903. If salvation

  1904. really is a

  1905. cooperation with

  1906. God, at some

  1907. point, we can

  1908. screw that up.

1909. If it was up to

  1910. me to cooperate

  1911. with God for

  1912. being saved, I

  1913. think I would

  1914. lose it every

  1915. day.

  1916. God's

  1917. faith in the

  1918. Thankfully, again,

  1919. our eternal

  1920. security rests in

  1921. the unconditional

  1922. election of the

  1923. Father.

  1924. All right, look at

  1925. John 10.

  1926. This is the last

  1927. place I think you

  1928. have to flip, but

  1929. John 10.

  1930. Trying to keep you

  1931. in John all I

  1932. can.

  1933. So, but I want

  1934. you to see this.

  1935. John 10, verse

    John 10:24

  1936. 24.

  1937. And that is a

  1938. consistent theology

  1939. that many have

  1940. held, a consistent

  1941. theology that says

  1942. if you have the

  1943. ability and the

  1944. right to choose

  1945. Jesus, you also

  1946. possess that same

  1947. ability and right

  1948. to walk away from

  1949. Jesus.

  1950. That's a correct

  1951. thinking, but

  1952. unbiblical.

  1953. Right logic, I

  1954. should say.

  1955. Look at John 10,

    John 10:24

  1956. verse 24.

  1957. So the Jews

  1958. gathered around

  1959. him and said

  1960. to him, how

  1961. long will you

  1962. keep us in

  1963. suspense?

  1964. If you are the

  1965. Christ, tell us

  1966. plainly.

  1967. Listen to this.

  1968. Jesus answered

  1969. them, I told

  1970. you and you

  1971. don't believe.

  1972. The works that I

  1973. do in my

  1974. Father's name

  1975. bear witness

  1976. about me.

  1977. Now listen to

  1978. this, verse 26.

  1979. But you do not

  1980. believe because

  1981. you are not

  1982. among my

  1983. sheep.

  1984. He doesn't say

  1985. you are not my

  1986. sheep because you

  1987. don't believe.

  1988. He says you

  1989. don't believe in

  1990. the first place

  1991. because you

  1992. don't belong to

  1993. me.

  1994. But read on.

  1995. Then he says,

  1996. my sheep, those

  1997. the Father has

  1998. given me.

  1999. My sheep hear

  2000. my voice.

  2001. I know them

  2002. and they

  2003. follow me.

  2004. I give them

  2005. eternal life

  2006. and they will

  2007. never perish

  2008. and no one

  2009. will snatch

  2010. them out of

  2011. my Father's

  2012. hand.

  2013. My Father

  2014. who has given

  2015. them to me

  2016. is greater

  2017. than all

  2018. and no one

  2019. is able to

  2020. snatch them

  2021. out of my

  2022. Father's hand.

  2023. I and the

  2024. Father are

  2025. one.

  2026. You see that?

  2027. This idea of

  2028. like belonging

  2029. to the Father

  2030. and how that

  2031. secures us

  2032. for eternity

  2033. that no one

  2034. can take them

  2035. from my

  2036. Father's hand.

  2037. So obviously

  2038. if you really

  2039. do believe

  2040. that your

  2041. salvation is

  2042. eternally

  2043. secure,

  2044. that should

  2045. disrupt,

  2046. like erupt

  2047. into joy.

  2048. As we see

  2049. in verse 15,

  2050. he's praying

  2051. for their joy,

  2052. praying that

  2053. their joy

  2054. will be

  2055. fulfilled

  2056. in themselves.

  2057. It points

  2058. back to John

  2059. 15, 11

  2060. where he's

  2061. talking about

  2062. joy.

  2063. There,

  2064. they may

  2065. have his

  2066. joy in

  2067. all its

  2068. fullness.

  2069. So,

  2070. believe me,

  2071. words like

  2072. joy and

  2073. peace would

  2074. not exist

  2075. in the New

  2076. Testament if

  2077. we could lose

  2078. what the

  2079. Father has

  2080. given us.

  2081. Those are

  2082. the outflow,

  2083. the overflow

  2084. of our

  2085. eternal

  2086. security

  2087. with the

  2088. Father.

  2089. So,

  2090. that's A,

  2091. praise for

  2092. their spiritual

  2093. protection.

  2094. And then

  2095. lastly,

  2096. lastly,

  2097. and in

  2098. closing,

  2099. he prays

  2100. for their

  2101. sanctification.

  2102. See that

  2103. in verses

  2104. 17 through

  2105. 19.

  2106. So,

  2107. he says,

  2108. sanctify them

  2109. in your

  2110. truth.

  2111. Your word

  2112. is truth.

  2113. And this

  2114. is in

  2115. terms of

  2116. being set

  2117. apart from

  2118. sin,

  2119. being set

  2120. apart from

  2121. evil in

  2122. the world

  2123. for a

  2124. holy purpose.

  2125. sin.

  2126. So,

  2127. that's why

  2128. he's

  2129. praying this.

  2130. Jesus is

  2131. saying,

  2132. you sent

  2133. me into

  2134. the world,

  2135. Father,

  2136. I'm about

  2137. to send

  2138. them into

  2139. the world.

  2140. And so,

  2141. holiness is

  2142. key to

  2143. mission here.

  2144. He understands

  2145. that them

  2146. living holy

  2147. lives will be

  2148. very important

  2149. to them going

  2150. out into the

  2151. world to

  2152. live before

  2153. a broken

  2154. world.

  2155. So,

  2156. think about

  2157. our mission

  2158. that we

  2159. have.

  2160. Are we

  2161. living holy

  2162. lives before

  2163. people?

  2164. That doesn't

  2165. mean too

  2166. good,

  2167. snotty,

  2168. legalistic

  2169. people.

  2170. It just

  2171. means free

  2172. people that

  2173. have been

  2174. liberated by

  2175. Jesus and

  2176. living for

  2177. Jesus.

  2178. So,

  2179. without holy

  2180. living,

  2181. our mission

  2182. will be

  2183. hindered.

  2184. So,

  2185. Christians are

  2186. not of the

  2187. world,

  2188. right?

  2189. It says here

  2190. in our text.

  2191. So then,

  2192. but Jesus

  2193. makes us

  2194. point of

  2195. him sanctifying

  2196. himself.

  2197. What does

  2198. that mean?

  2199. Well,

  2200. it doesn't

  2201. mean that

  2202. he's trying

  2203. to become

  2204. more holy

  2205. because we've

  2206. already established

  2207. that he was

  2208. the perfect,

  2209. sinless

  2210. son of

  2211. God.

  2212. Rather,

  2213. it does

  2214. mean that

  2215. Jesus has

  2216. set himself

  2217. apart to

  2218. do the

  2219. Father's

  2220. will and

  2221. his will

  2222. alone.

  2223. And that

  2224. includes

  2225. going to

  2226. the cross,

  2227. however

  2228. repulsive

  2229. that might

  2230. be to

  2231. him.

  2232. He does

  2233. this for

  2234. the sake

  2235. of his

  2236. disciples

  2237. and really

  2238. for us

  2239. as well.

  2240. He goes

  2241. before us

  2242. to be

  2243. secure.

  2244. So,

  2245. so Paul

  2246. says in

  2247. 1 Thessalonians

  2248. 5,

  2249. 23,

  2250. talking about

  2251. sanctification

  2252. and also

  2253. us

  2254. persevering.

  2255. Now,

  2256. may the

  2257. God of

  2258. peace

  2259. himself

  2260. sanctify

  2261. you

  2262. completely

  2263. and may

  2264. your whole

  2265. spirit and

  2266. soul and

  2267. body be

  2268. kept

  2269. blameless

  2270. at the

  2271. coming

  2272. of our

  2273. Lord Jesus

  2274. Christ.

  2275. He calls

  2276. you,

  2277. he who

  2278. calls you

  2279. is faithful

  2280. and he

  2281. will surely

  2282. do it.

  2283. So,

  2284. I pray

  2285. that

  2286. your hearts

  2287. are rejoicing

  2288. that Christ

  2289. does stand

  2290. on our

  2291. behalf

  2292. interceding

  2293. for us

  2294. before the

  2295. throne of

  2296. God.

  2297. I,

  2298. I'm just

  2299. blessed,

  2300. overwhelmed

  2301. to know

  2302. that a

  2303. sinful man

  2304. like me,

  2305. and I

  2306. don't say

  2307. that with

  2308. any false

  2309. humility,

  2310. I'm a

  2311. wicked man.

  2312. I mean,

  2313. I feel a

  2314. verse that

  2315. just comes

  2316. to my

  2317. mind a lot

  2318. is Peter

  2319. when he

  2320. tells Jesus,

  2321. go away

  2322. from me,

  2323. I'm a

  2324. sinful man.

  2325. I feel

  2326. that,

  2327. but to

  2328. know that

  2329. he has

  2330. accepted

  2331. me,

  2332. saved me,

  2333. and is

  2334. now changing

  2335. me for

  2336. some reason,

  2337. I don't

  2338. know why,

  2339. but he's

  2340. doing that

  2341. for all

  2342. of us,

  2343. and he's

  2344. standing

  2345. before the

  2346. Father

  2347. saying,

  2348. I died

  2349. for them.

  2350. My life

  2351. belongs to

  2352. them,

  2353. my death

  2354. belongs to

  2355. them.

  2356. So they

  2357. are right

  2358. before,

  2359. or we

  2360. are right

  2361. before the

  2362. Father.

  2363. Look at

  2364. I'm a

  2365. part of

  2366. this in

  2367. our text

  2368. where he

  2369. calls him,

  2370. Jesus calls

  2371. him Holy

  2372. Father.

  2373. That's

  2374. echoing this

  2375. assertion of

  2376. God's awesome

  2377. purity,

  2378. his otherness

  2379. that's described

  2380. in the Old

  2381. Testament.

  2382. But listen,

  2383. this is the

  2384. only time in

  2385. the New

  2386. Testament this

  2387. title is

  2388. used for

  2389. God.

  2390. And I

  2391. just sort

  2392. of think

  2393. that's worth

  2394. pointing out

  2395. that Jesus

  2396. has this

  2397. unique

  2398. relationship,

  2399. very unique

  2400. with the

  2401. Father,

  2402. where he

  2403. can say

  2404. Holy

  2405. Father,

  2406. I'm

  2407. praying on

  2408. behalf of

  2409. these people,

  2410. listen to

  2411. me.

  2412. And as we

  2413. know,

  2414. the Father

  2415. honors what

  2416. his Son

  2417. says.

  2418. So,

  2419. let's pray

  2420. together.

  2421. A lot to

  2422. chew on,

  2423. but I pray

  2424. that your soul

  2425. is rejoicing

  2426. in the fact

  2427. that he

  2428. has showed

  2429. us mercy

  2430. and that we

  2431. have an

  2432. advocate

  2433. before the

  2434. Father.
