  1. 5 verses 17 through 20, right, where Jesus says, I came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill the law.

  2. And so I thought, well, what if rather than starting in on Exodus 20 this morning, we start in on the Sermon on the Mount.

  3. It's been quite some time as a church since we've done that.

  4. I think it's been 10 years since we looked at the Sermon on the Mount together.

  5. And to do instead a series through the Sermon on the Mount, which will get us to Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 through 20 and force the issue once again at that point.

    Matthew 5:17–20

  6. So essentially, I bought myself eight or nine weeks to sort through it all.

  7. However, there's a massive richness at the beginning of chapter 5.

  8. So I don't want you to feel like we're just biding time, but rather let's dive in together into the Sermon on the Mount and then we'll get to that place.

  9. I believe you'll find that Exodus 20 and Matthew 5 and on into 6 are intrinsically interwoven, but we'll see when we get to that point.

  10. So we're going to begin working on that.

  11. If you are a college student and you were really, really hoping to do Exodus 20 before the semester was out, I'm just sorry.

  12. We probably won't get into it until this summer, but we'll see how the pace goes and hopefully this will serve you well.

  13. So our text for today is Matthew chapter 5 verses 1 through 3.

    Matthew 5:1–3

  14. Before I read that, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  15. It is written for his glory and for our good.

  16. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  17. Matthew chapter 5 verse 1 and following.

    Matthew 5:1

  18. Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

  19. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

  20. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  21. In Matthew's account, this sermon comes very quickly at the beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  22. So as introduction, let's take a quick look back into chapter 4 at Jesus' ministry to this point.

  23. Matthew 4, 12 through 17.

  24. John the Baptist has just been arrested.

  25. And Matthew writes for us, verse 12 and following.

  26. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.

  27. And leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.

  28. In verses 14 through 16, Matthew tells us this was to fulfill an Old Testament prophecy.

  29. And then in verse 17, he writes,

  30. From that time, Jesus began to preach, saying,

  31. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  32. So this is the very beginning in Matthew's account of Jesus' earthly ministry.

  33. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  34. Then we see in chapter 4, verses 18 through 22,

  35. Jesus calls some of the first disciples, four of them, two sets of brothers.

  36. And then in verses 23 through 25,

  37. Jesus proclaims the gospel of the kingdom,

  38. this good news of the coming kingdom of God.

  39. He performs many miracles as signs to this coming kingdom,

  40. verifying the things that he's teaching.

  41. And as a result, gathers crowds.

  42. People begin to follow him around.

  43. And so in chapter 5, verses 1 and 2,

  44. Matthew sets the stage for this most famous of Jesus' sermons.

  45. It was not his only sermon,

  46. but it was certainly the most famous of Jesus' sermons.

  47. And Matthew tells us that there is a crowd.

  48. Seeing the crowds,

  49. Jesus goes away from the crowds and goes up onto the mountain.

  50. He tells us that Jesus ascends an unnamed mountain.

  51. We're not entirely sure there's some long-standing tradition which mountain it is,

  52. but we're not exactly sure which mountain.

  53. It's not significant really.

  54. He goes away from the crowd in order to teach.

  55. And Matthew tells us that his primary audience is not the crowd.

  56. So note verse 1,

  57. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain.

  58. And when he sat down, who came to him?

  59. His disciples.

  60. His disciples came to him.

  61. So he's called some, right?

  62. So far we've seen in Matthew's text 4.

  63. There may have been some others at this point.

  64. Some of this crowd may have been considered disciples at this point.

  65. But the thing I want you to hear very clearly is that Jesus preaches this sermon not to unbelievers,

  66. but to believers.

  67. Much like many of the New Testament epistles, right, are written as letters to churches.

  68. And so we do well to keep that in mind as we're going to walk our way through the text of the Sermon on the Mount.

  69. The Sermon on the Mount is understood to be a declaration of the kingdom of God.

  70. The kingdom has come because the king has come.

  71. Jesus here is teaching what those who are citizens of his kingdom will look like.

  72. Remember, he is teaching his disciples.

  73. And as we study across these three chapters, we're going to see two major themes emerge,

  74. which we'll consider at length in the coming months.

  75. The first major theme that I'm going to talk about anyway is whole person righteousness.

  76. Whole person righteousness.

  77. Jesus in this sermon corrects the misunderstanding that God is only concerned with action

  78. and the outward appearance of righteousness.

  79. Citizens of God's kingdom will not only honor God with their actions,

  80. but also with their thoughts, intentions, motivations, emotions.

  81. God cares about our hearts, not merely the exterior.

  82. So whole person righteousness is going to emerge as a prominent theme throughout this text.

  83. And I believe as a result of this whole person righteousness,

  84. the second theme that emerges is human flourishing.

  85. The well-being of God's disciples, those citizens of God's kingdom will flourish.

  86. They will have joy and comfort and peace and satisfaction.

  87. We will see in the sermon that the flourishing of God's kingdom

  88. often runs in direct contradiction to the world's concept of flourishing.

  89. But nonetheless, we'll flourish in the kingdom of God.

  90. And in verse 3, Jesus begins his sermon and leads out with this second theme of human flourishing

  91. in making the declaration,

  92. blessed are the poor in spirit.

  93. Now, I'll get into some of this in the coming weeks.

  94. We'll talk more about this word that's translated blessed here.

  95. We know, if you're familiar with your scripture,

  96. that this is often called the Beatitudes,

  97. which is a translation of a transliteration from Latin into English.

  98. It's very complex why we end up arriving at this spot of beatitude.

  99. These blessings, these declarations of blessing on particular quality of citizens of the kingdom.

  100. The Greek word here translated blessed is makarios.

  101. And there's a lot of translation dilemma here.

  102. Some words translated from Greek into English are very simple translations.

  103. Often when we're looking at New Testament texts,

  104. we want to go on the deeper dive and go see what the original language means.

  105. And you go, oh yeah, yeah, it means what it means in English.

  106. Well done, translators.

  107. But there are some Greek words that are very difficult to apply an equivalent English word to.

  108. And that's when it's helpful that we are students of the original language

  109. and we do our best to try to wrap our minds around what this word means.

  110. So often we see it, and here in this case, in the ESV, we see it blessed.

  111. Some will say happy.

  112. Some will say joyful, like an abiding, intrinsic happiness.

  113. But the challenge to some of those things is that God's people aren't always happy, are we?

  114. It's acceptable as God's people to mourn.

  115. The very next blessed is about mourning.

  116. It's about sadness over something in particular.

  117. So it becomes a little bit difficult then.

  118. What does it mean exactly?

  119. Are we meant to be bubbly?

  120. Is that what Jesus is suggesting to us here?

  121. And it's not.

  122. Fortunate could be another English word put in this place.

  123. But my favorite is flourishing.

  124. And we will, in the coming weeks, unpack what that flourishing looks like.

  125. But you could think of it as well-being.

  126. Doing well are the poor in spirit.

  127. Jesus here is making a declaration, right?

  128. That those who are poor in spirit are blessed.

  129. It's as if he is observing a person poor in spirit.

  130. And he's saying to them, he's saying to the disciples, look at the poor in spirit.

  131. They are blessed.

  132. He's declaring this.

  133. He's putting a label on to this person.

  134. Look at the way they are.

  135. They are blessed.

  136. They're doing well.

  137. They're flourishing.

  138. All goes well with them because they're poor in spirit.

  139. An example of this, just to make the point of the way this is a declaration made.

  140. Matthew 16, 17, after Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ.

  141. Jesus asked Peter, who do you say that I am?

  142. And Peter responds, you are the Christ.

  143. Verse 17 says, Jesus answered him, blessed are you, Simon Barjona, right?

  144. Blessed.

  145. He puts this label on to him.

  146. You are blessed.

  147. Why?

  148. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven, right?

  149. You've had this truth of who I am revealed to you by my Father.

  150. And therefore, you are doing well.

  151. You are flourishing because you're recognizing me as the Christ.

  152. And so, Jesus says, declares, blessed are those who are poor in spirit.

  153. So, what does it mean to be poor in spirit?

  154. Jesus here is not talking about those who are financially poor.

  155. He does not say, blessed are the poor.

  156. He says, blessed are the poor in spirit.

  157. Now, the financially poor may have one less obstacle to recognizing their spiritual poverty.

  158. But that is not the criteria that Jesus is teaching here.

  159. He declares, blessed are those who are poor in spirit.

  160. In order to grasp the meaning of this phrase, I want to take you on a brief survey of Bible characters.

  161. I want to show you men throughout biblical history who were poor in spirit to help us wrap our mind around what this means,

  162. beginning with Abraham and ending with Paul.

  163. And my prayer is that we'll witness these individuals' recognition of their spiritual poverty.

  164. So, hang with me.

  165. I don't think you actually need to turn, maybe write references so you can test me later that I'm actually reading to you the scripture.

  166. But let's start with Abraham.

  167. In dealing with the Lord about Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham said in Genesis 18, 27,

  168. Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord.

  169. I who am but dust and ashes.

  170. Jacob, when he returned to the promised land after spending 20 years in exile,

  171. he wrestled with God in prayer and said in Genesis 32, 10,

  172. I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant.

  173. Abraham, I am but dust and ashes.

  174. Jacob, I am not worthy of the goodness that you've shown me.

  175. Moses, when God came to him and gave him this mission to go back to Egypt to set his people free,

  176. Abraham said in Exodus 3, 11, and then in chapter 4, 10,

  177. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?

  178. Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either heretofore or since thou hast spoken to thy servant,

  179. but I am slow of speech and of tongue.

  180. Why send me?

  181. Is what Moses says to God.

  182. We know that God gets angry at him, but not because of his understanding of himself,

  183. but because he fails to believe that God will deliver his people.

  184. David, King David, after he is an adulterous murderer,

  185. he says in Psalm 51, verse 17,

    Psalms 51:17

  186. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart.

  187. Oh, God, you will not despise.

  188. And it's easy to agree that this is the spirit that pleases God after you are adulterous and murderous.

  189. But what about the times when you're doing well,

  190. when you're doing what you ought to be doing?

  191. When a collection for the temple was being taken,

  192. when David and his people were performing an act of virtue,

  193. David prayed, and it's recorded for us in 1 Chronicles 29, 14,

  194. But who am I, and what is my people,

  195. that we should be able thus to offer willingly?

  196. Even when we're doing good, who are we that we're allowed to do good?

  197. And then he says,

  198. For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.

  199. King Solomon, 1 Kings 3, verse 7.

    1 Kings 3:7

  200. You will learn about me if you don't already know.

  201. I like beating points.

  202. It's recorded, he said,

  203. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father,

  204. although I am but a little child.

  205. I do not know how to go out or come in.

  206. There's a lot of debate about when Solomon became king,

  207. and it ranges between 12 and 20.

  208. But either way you look at it,

  209. I'm pretty sure at 12 he knew how to get out in and out of a room.

  210. So he's magnifying his smallness as he prays this to God.

  211. Why me?

  212. Look at me.

  213. I'm just so ignorant of the things that a king should know.

  214. Job.

  215. Here's a great one.

  216. Job 42, 5, and 6.

  217. God speaks to him out of the cloud,

  218. and he says,

  219. I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,

  220. but now my eye sees you.

  221. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.

  222. Isaiah, another man that encountered God.

  223. In Isaiah 6, 5,

  224. Isaiah says,

  225. Woe is me, for I am lost.

  226. For I am a man of unclean lips,

  227. and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips.

  228. For my eyes have seen the King,

  229. the Lord of hosts.

  230. Let's go to the New Testament.

  231. John the Baptist.

  232. John 1, verse 27,

    John 1:27

  233. and then chapter 3, verse 30.

  234. John says,

  235. I baptize with water,

  236. but among you stands one whom you do not know.

  237. He's speaking of Christ.

  238. Even he who comes after me,

  239. the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.

  240. And in 3.30, he says,

  241. He must increase.

  242. I must decrease.

  243. We see in a parable,

  244. a tax collector,

  245. and Jesus tells this parable of a Pharisee,

  246. and a tax collector who went up to the temple to pray.

  247. And concerning the tax collector,

  248. Jesus said in Luke chapter 18,

    Luke 18:13

  249. verse 13 and 14,

  250. But the tax collector standing far off

  251. would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,

  252. but beat his breast saying,

  253. God, be merciful to me,

  254. a sinner.

  255. I tell you,

  256. this man went down to his house justified

  257. rather than the other.

  258. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  259. but the one who humbles himself

  260. will be exalted.

  261. We have a story in Luke chapter 7

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  262. of a centurion.

  263. Verses 6-9 say,

  264. When Jesus was not far off from the house,

  265. the centurion sent friends to him,

  266. saying to him,

  267. Lord, do not trouble yourself,

  268. for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

  269. Therefore, I do not presume to come to you,

  270. but say the word and let my servant be healed.

  271. When Jesus heard this,

  272. he marveled at him

  273. and turned and said to the multitude,

  274. I tell you,

  275. not ever in Israel have I found such faith.

  276. As he emptied himself for his Lord.

  277. Peter.

  278. When Peter saw the power of Jesus

  279. on the lake of Gennesaret,

  280. in Luke 5-8,

  281. he fell down at Jesus' knees saying,

  282. Depart from me,

  283. for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

  284. Then finally, Paul.

  285. Romans chapter 7, verse 18,

    Romans 7:18

  286. he wrote,

  287. Lord, I know that nothing good dwells in me,

  288. that is, in my flesh.

  289. 1 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 6-7,

    1 Corinthians 3:6–7

  290. Paul says,

  291. I planted, Apollos watered,

  292. but God gave the growth.

  293. So neither he who plants nor he who waters

  294. is anything,

  295. but only God who gives the growth.

  296. And finally, last reference,

  297. 1 Timothy chapter 1, verses 15 and 16.

    1 Timothy 1:15

  298. Paul writes,

  299. The saying is trustworthy

  300. and deserving of full acceptance,

  301. that Christ Jesus came into the world

  302. to save sinners,

  303. of whom I am the foremost.

  304. But I receive mercy for this reason,

  305. that in me as the foremost,

  306. Jesus Christ might display

  307. his perfect patience

  308. as an example

  309. to those who are to believe in him

  310. for eternal life.

  311. So, a lot of examples, right,

  312. of what it looks like

  313. to be poor in spirit,

  314. but are we wrapping our brains around it?

  315. What does it mean?

  316. What does it mean to be poor in spirit?

  317. I'll give you a few things.

  318. It's a recognition

  319. of spiritual bankruptcy

  320. and helplessness before God.

  321. We have nothing to bring to him, right?

  322. Dead in our trespasses

  323. and in our sins.

  324. We have no ounce of good

  325. to offer God apart from Christ.

  326. So, it's this recognition

  327. of spiritual bankruptcy

  328. and helplessness before God.

  329. It is a recognition

  330. of powerlessness

  331. in and of ourselves.

  332. It is a recognition

  333. of moral uncleanliness

  334. before God,

  335. that our sin against

  336. a most holy, infinite God

  337. is of infinite offense.

  338. It is a recognition

  339. of personal unworthiness

  340. before God.

  341. Why would God show grace to me?

  342. It is a recognition

  343. that if there is to be any life

  344. or joy

  345. or usefulness whatsoever,

  346. it would have to be

  347. all of God

  348. and all of His grace.

  349. The reason that it's proper to say

  350. that to be poor in spirit

  351. is a recognition

  352. of bankruptcy

  353. and a recognition

  354. of powerlessness

  355. and uncleanliness

  356. and unworthiness

  357. is that objectively speaking,

  358. everybody is poor in spirit.

  359. It is part of the human condition.

  360. After the fall of mankind,

  361. everyone born since

  362. has been poor in spirit.

  363. Everybody,

  364. whether they recognize it or not,

  365. is utterly hopeless

  366. before God.

  367. But not everybody

  368. is declared blessed.

  369. Those declared blessed

  370. are those who recognize

  371. their spiritual poverty

  372. and turn to God

  373. by grace alone,

  374. through faith alone,

  375. in Christ alone.

  376. Remember,

  377. Jesus is teaching

  378. His disciples.

  379. He's teaching those

  380. who are following Him

  381. from faith

  382. and they are declared

  383. blessed.

  384. They've recognized

  385. their need

  386. of Him.

  387. So,

  388. as we hold up

  389. the Sermon on the Mount

  390. and we consider it,

  391. we want to hold it up

  392. to ourselves.

  393. We want to look and say,

  394. if this is what

  395. the kingdom looks like,

  396. if this is how

  397. the citizens

  398. of God's kingdom look,

  399. do I find myself

  400. in here?

  401. Is this me?

  402. Am I poor in spirit?

  403. We must ask ourselves

  404. these questions

  405. because there's such

  406. a weighty answer

  407. to be had.

  408. We want to say,

  409. yes,

  410. this is me.

  411. Yes,

  412. I am blessed.

  413. Yes,

  414. the kingdom of God

  415. is mine.

  416. Because if we can't,

  417. our end is destruction

  418. and utter doom

  419. and retribution

  420. for our sin

  421. forever.

  422. It's a weighty thing

  423. that's before us

  424. to take a look at this

  425. and really consider,

  426. am I a citizen

  427. of God's kingdom?

  428. So,

  429. how can a person

  430. know

  431. if they are poor

  432. in spirit?

  433. We do not arrive

  434. at these things

  435. with perfection.

  436. Right?

  437. So,

  438. we're going to read

  439. through these

  440. as we're working

  441. through these

  442. blessings,

  443. these beatitudes.

  444. and none of us

  445. are doing this

  446. with perfection,

  447. but is it

  448. characterize

  449. who I am?

  450. So,

  451. recognizing

  452. that you are

  453. poor in spirit

  454. is the starting

  455. point of

  456. humility.

  457. These phrases,

  458. I believe,

  459. are too readily

  460. equated with one

  461. another.

  462. You have

  463. poor in spirit

  464. and humility

  465. used synonymously,

  466. but I think

  467. it's right to say

  468. that being poor

  469. in spirit

  470. produces humility.

  471. Right?

  472. Humility is the

  473. fruit of an

  474. impoverished spirit.

  475. You see how

  476. spiritually bankrupt

  477. you are

  478. and therefore

  479. you become

  480. humble

  481. and that humility

  482. works out.

  483. Right?

  484. We can see,

  485. we can observe

  486. both for our lives

  487. and for those

  488. around us.

  489. Humility.

  490. Thomas Watson,

  491. a Puritan pastor,

  492. wrote this.

  493. He said,

  494. I think poverty

  495. of spirit

  496. is the cause

  497. of humility

  498. for when a man

  499. sees his want

  500. of Christ,

  501. sees his want

  502. of Christ,

  503. and how he lives

  504. on the alms

  505. of free grace,

  506. this makes him

  507. humble.

  508. He that is sensible

  509. of his own

  510. vacuity

  511. and indigence,

  512. which means

  513. stupidity

  514. and poverty,

  515. hangs his head

  516. in humility

  517. with the violet.

  518. Humility

  519. is the sweet

  520. spice that grows

  521. from poverty

  522. of spirit.

  523. That's probably

  524. the only part

  525. of that I should

  526. have read.

  527. Humility

  528. is the sweet

  529. spice that grows

  530. from poverty

  531. of spirit.

  532. So let's

  533. take a look.

  534. Let's observe

  535. your own life,

  536. help others

  537. in talking about

  538. what's been

  539. presented to you

  540. today,

  541. to consider

  542. their life.

  543. Let's look

  544. at six measures

  545. of humility

  546. as our gauge

  547. of awareness

  548. of our spiritual

  549. poverty.

  550. Are you

  551. poor

  552. in spirit?

  553. So let's

  554. look at six

  555. measures of that.

  556. Number one,

  557. the humble

  558. are self-forgetful.

  559. The humble

  560. are self-forgetful,

  561. and by that

  562. I mean

  563. we are not

  564. occupied

  565. only with

  566. ourselves.

  567. All of our

  568. intention is not

  569. turned inward,

  570. but our

  571. intention turns

  572. outward.

  573. A humble

  574. person

  575. loses their

  576. self-preoccupation.

  577. They recognize

  578. that the world

  579. does not

  580. revolve around

  581. them,

  582. and they move

  583. outside themselves,

  584. first toward

  585. God,

  586. and then toward

  587. others.

  588. Paul wrote

  589. in Galatians

  590. 2.20,

  591. I have been

  592. crucified

  593. with Christ.

  594. This is no

  595. longer I

  596. who live.

  597. Life is a

  598. sacrifice,

  599. but Christ

  600. who lives in

  601. me.

  602. And the life

  603. that I now

  604. live in the

  605. flesh,

  606. I live by

  607. faith in

  608. the Son

  609. of God

  610. who loved

  611. me and

  612. gave

  613. himself

  614. for me.

  615. So we

  616. turn this

  617. devotion from

  618. ourselves,

  619. outside of

  620. ourselves,

  621. to God.

  622. We forget

  623. so much

  624. about ourselves

  625. to our

  626. great benefit,

  627. and devote

  628. ourselves to

  629. him.

  630. And we

  631. love and

  632. serve others.

  633. Beloved,

  634. if you are

  635. truly humble,

  636. you will

  637. maximize the

  638. strengths and

  639. the virtues

  640. of others.

  641. If you find

  642. yourself to be

  643. a particularly

  644. nitpicky person,

  645. always drawing

  646. out the negative

  647. things,

  648. always showing

  649. somebody their

  650. fault,

  651. it's because you

  652. think too much

  653. of yourself.

  654. You think you're

  655. in a position

  656. to show them

  657. their faults.

  658. The humble

  659. look at others

  660. and go,

  661. way to go.

  662. You're doing

  663. a lot of

  664. things really

  665. well.

  666. Romans 12,

  667. 10,

  668. Paul writes,

  669. love one

  670. another with

  671. brotherly

  672. affection,

  673. outdo one

  674. another in

  675. showing honor.

  676. The humble

  677. person recognizes

  678. their spiritual

  679. poverty,

  680. the very depth

  681. of how atrocious

  682. they can be.

  683. So the humble

  684. are self-forgetful.

  685. Number two,

  686. the humble

  687. are enthralled

  688. with Christ

  689. and becoming

  690. like him.

  691. Enthralled

  692. with Christ

  693. and becoming

  694. like him.

  695. Is Jesus

  696. Christ

  697. the most

  698. precious thing

  699. you possess?

  700. And if you're

  701. in him,

  702. he is yours.

  703. You are his

  704. and he is

  705. yours.

  706. Is he the

  707. most precious

  708. thing to you?

  709. And you can

  710. measure this out

  711. by considering

  712. what you

  713. think about

  714. most and

  715. what you

  716. talk about

  717. most.

  718. It's a very

  719. simple thing

  720. to do.

  721. I wish

  722. somebody could

  723. walk around

  724. and record

  725. you and

  726. make one

  727. of those

  728. scatter

  729. things,

  730. make words

  731. bigger the

  732. more it's

  733. said in a

  734. paper.

  735. But many

  736. of us

  737. would find

  738. that we

  739. don't talk

  740. about Jesus

  741. Christ nearly

  742. as much

  743. as we

  744. think we

  745. do.

  746. The humble

  747. are enthralled

  748. with Christ

  749. and becoming

  750. like him.

  751. Paul writes

  752. Philippians

  753. 1.21

  754. to me

  755. to live

  756. is Christ.

  757. To do

  758. his bidding,

  759. to know

  760. him more

  761. by being

  762. part of

  763. the growing

  764. of his

  765. kingdom.

  766. And to

  767. die is

  768. what?

  769. It's gain.

  770. Why?

  771. Put off

  772. the shackles

  773. of this

  774. world and

  775. my sinful

  776. flesh and

  777. be with

  778. him forever.

  779. He writes

  780. in other

  781. places,

  782. 2 Corinthians

  783. 3.18

  784. And we

  785. all with

  786. unveiled

  787. face,

  788. beholding

  789. the glory

  790. of the

  791. Lord,

  792. are being

  793. transformed

  794. in the

  795. same

  796. image

  797. from one

  798. degree of

  799. glory to

  800. another.

  801. For this

  802. comes from

  803. the Lord

  804. who is

  805. the Spirit.

  806. So we

  807. long for

  808. that.

  809. We want

  810. to be

  811. made

  812. more

  813. like

  814. him.

  815. The

  816. humble

  817. are

  818. enthralled

  819. with

  820. Christ

  821. and

  822. becoming

  823. like

  824. him.

  825. Third,

  826. the

  827. humble

  828. are not

  829. complainers.

  830. the

  831. humble

  832. recognize

  833. what

  834. they

  835. actually

  836. deserve.

  837. You know

  838. what you

  839. actually

  840. deserve?

  841. Death

  842. and

  843. hell.

  844. So no

  845. matter

  846. the state

  847. that we

  848. find ourselves

  849. in,

  850. we really

  851. have no

  852. space for

  853. complaining.

  854. So much

  855. blessing,

  856. blessing upon

  857. blessing upon

  858. blessing when

  859. you recognize

  860. that what you

  861. really deserve

  862. is death

  863. and hell.

  864. And complaining

  865. comes from

  866. expecting

  867. more.

  868. What I do

  869. deserve is

  870. this.

  871. That's not

  872. fair.

  873. Beloved,

  874. we don't

  875. want what's

  876. fair.

  877. Paul writes

  878. in Romans

    Romans 8:17

  879. chapter 8

  880. verse 17

  881. and 18,

  882. if children

  883. then heirs,

  884. heirs of

  885. God and

  886. fellow heirs

  887. with Christ,

  888. provided we

  889. what?

  890. We suffer

  891. with him

  892. in order

  893. that we

  894. may also

  895. be glorified

  896. with him.

  897. Paul's

  898. saying that

  899. an evidence

  900. of a life

  901. lived for

  902. Christ,

  903. one who's

  904. poor in

  905. spirit,

  906. a citizen

  907. of this

  908. kingdom,

  909. is going

  910. to suffer.

  911. The conclusion

  912. of the

  913. beatitude

  914. says the

  915. very same

  916. thing,

  917. blessed are

  918. those who

  919. are persecuted

  920. for righteousness

  921. sake.

  922. And so,

  923. we're going

  924. to suffer

  925. in this

  926. world,

  927. and Paul

  928. says in

  929. verse 18,

  930. for I

  931. consider that

  932. the sufferings

  933. of this

  934. present time

  935. are not

  936. worth

  937. comparing.

  938. And I

  939. like to

  940. reread that

  941. and say

  942. present time

  943. are not

  944. even worth

  945. comparing.

  946. Don't even

  947. take the

  948. time to

  949. compare it

  950. with the

  951. glory that

  952. is to be

  953. revealed to

  954. us.

  955. Such a

  956. glorious

  957. reality that

  958. awaits us,

  959. right?

  960. Having found

  961. ourselves poor

  962. in spirit,

  963. looking to

  964. this thing,

  965. recognizing

  966. what we

  967. actually deserve,

  968. which is

  969. death and

  970. hell.

  971. Fourth,

  972. the humble

  973. have Christ

  974. on his

  975. terms.

  976. I borrowed

  977. some of

  978. these from

  979. Thomas Watson,

  980. so that's

  981. why that

  982. language sounds

  983. very Puritan.

  984. The humble

  985. have Christ

  986. on his

  987. terms.

  988. The humble

  989. will not

  990. try to have

  991. Christ while

  992. hanging on

  993. to sinful

  994. vices.

  995. So,

  996. we'll have

  997. Christ and

  998. we'll walk

  999. in his

  1000. ways.

  1001. If he's

  1002. going to

  1003. be our

  1004. savior,

  1005. he must

  1006. be our

  1007. Lord.

  1008. We will

  1009. follow him.

  1010. We won't

  1011. try to

  1012. manipulate him

  1013. and his

  1014. commands to

  1015. meet our

  1016. needs.

  1017. We'll have

  1018. Christ on

  1019. his terms,

  1020. right?

  1021. Jesus says,

  1022. you have

  1023. me, now

  1024. follow me.

  1025. If you

  1026. love Christ,

  1027. you will

  1028. love his

  1029. word and

  1030. make it the

  1031. standard for

  1032. your living.

  1033. The scripture

  1034. sets up as

  1035. the pole

  1036. position that

  1037. we chase

  1038. in this

  1039. race of

  1040. life.

  1041. Again,

  1042. Thomas Watson,

  1043. I think you're

  1044. going to hear

  1045. a lot from

  1046. him in the

  1047. coming months.

  1048. He wrote

  1049. this.

  1050. He wrote a

  1051. wonderful

  1052. commentary on

  1053. the Beatitudes.

  1054. He wrote,

  1055. a castle that

  1056. has long been

  1057. besieged and

  1058. is ready to

  1059. be taken will

  1060. deliver upon

  1061. any terms to

  1062. save their

  1063. lives.

  1064. He whose

  1065. heart has

  1066. been a

  1067. garrison for

  1068. the devil and

  1069. has held out

  1070. long in

  1071. opposition against

  1072. Christ,

  1073. when once God

  1074. has brought

  1075. him to

  1076. poverty of

  1077. spirit and

  1078. he sees

  1079. himself damned

  1080. without

  1081. Christ,

  1082. let God

  1083. propound what

  1084. articles he

  1085. will.

  1086. So,

  1087. bring the

  1088. treaty.

  1089. It does

  1090. not matter

  1091. what the

  1092. expectations

  1093. of the

  1094. treaty are.

  1095. He will

  1096. readily

  1097. subscribe to

  1098. them.

  1099. Lord,

  1100. what will

  1101. you have

  1102. me do?

  1103. That's the

  1104. response.

  1105. When we

  1106. recognize how

  1107. spiritually

  1108. impoverished we

  1109. are, we

  1110. recognize how

  1111. desperately we

  1112. need to be

  1113. saved.

  1114. What would

  1115. you have

  1116. me do?

  1117. Thomas Watson

  1118. in conclusion

  1119. says,

  1120. he that is

  1121. poor in

  1122. spirit will

  1123. do anything

  1124. that he

  1125. may have

  1126. Christ.

  1127. So, the

  1128. humble have

  1129. Christ on

  1130. his terms.

  1131. And, beloved,

  1132. that's a

  1133. wonderful thing.

  1134. It's for our

  1135. good.

  1136. Number five,

  1137. the humble

  1138. pray.

  1139. The humble

  1140. pray.

  1141. Beloved, we

  1142. are meant to

  1143. be a praying

  1144. people if we

  1145. recognize how

  1146. very spiritually

  1147. impoverished we

  1148. are.

  1149. We know that we

  1150. can do no

  1151. good thing

  1152. apart from

  1153. God.

  1154. We flail

  1155. about trying

  1156. to accomplish

  1157. things for

  1158. God, rather

  1159. than in

  1160. treating with

  1161. him that he

  1162. would work

  1163. and use us

  1164. in his

  1165. working.

  1166. I cannot

  1167. tell you how

  1168. many times,

  1169. to my shame,

  1170. in the past

  1171. decade, that

  1172. I have prepped

  1173. a sermon

  1174. within days of

  1175. needing to

  1176. deliver the

  1177. sermon and

  1178. not prayed.

  1179. God, it's

  1180. horrible.

  1181. I go to my

  1182. books and I

  1183. rely on my

  1184. intellect without

  1185. first stopping

  1186. and saying,

  1187. I can do

  1188. nothing apart

  1189. from you.

  1190. For a long

  1191. time now, I've

  1192. signed things,

  1193. emails and

  1194. things like that

  1195. to come out

  1196. to you.

  1197. SDG, some

  1198. of you have

  1199. asked me what

  1200. that means,

  1201. lowercase s,

  1202. uppercase d,

  1203. lowercase g.

  1204. That's the way

  1205. Bach signed

  1206. his pieces of

  1207. music.

  1208. And it means

  1209. solely Deo

  1210. Gloria.

  1211. That's what it

  1212. means.

  1213. So he was

  1214. concluding in

  1215. that way.

  1216. Men of the

  1217. ministry, you

  1218. may have

  1219. noticed that

  1220. the email

  1221. that went

  1222. out this

  1223. past time

  1224. had an

  1225. uppercase j

  1226. and a

  1227. lowercase j

  1228. at the

  1229. very top

  1230. of it.

  1231. Because I

  1232. learned,

  1233. I'm grateful

  1234. to learn this,

  1235. that many of

  1236. his pieces of

  1237. music started,

  1238. I won't get

  1239. the Latin

  1240. phrase right

  1241. off the top

  1242. so I won't

  1243. try, but

  1244. with a Latin

  1245. phrase that

  1246. meant,

  1247. Jesus help.

  1248. help.

  1249. So, starting

  1250. this Sunday,

  1251. my notes at

  1252. the top say

  1253. JJ, and at

  1254. the bottom

  1255. they say

  1256. SDG as

  1257. reminders to

  1258. myself.

  1259. Right?

  1260. We are

  1261. utterly helpless

  1262. apart from him,

  1263. and when we

  1264. recognize that,

  1265. we'll go to the

  1266. one who can

  1267. help.

  1268. Right?

  1269. Get the

  1270. phrase in

  1271. your mind.

  1272. It's a Latin

  1273. phrase.

  1274. I hope this

  1275. helps you.

  1276. Sine qua

  1277. non.

  1278. Without

  1279. which

  1280. nothing.

  1281. Psalm 145,

  1282. 18,

  1283. the Lord is

  1284. near to all

  1285. who call

  1286. on him,

  1287. to all who

  1288. call on

  1289. him in

  1290. truth.

  1291. Lord, we

  1292. need you.

  1293. Come and

  1294. work.

  1295. John MacArthur

  1296. wrote in his

  1297. commentary on

  1298. this verse,

  1299. just as the

  1300. physical beggar

  1301. begs for

  1302. physical

  1303. sustenance,

  1304. the spiritual

  1305. beggar begs

  1306. for spiritual.

  1307. We will

  1308. knock often

  1309. at heaven's

  1310. gate because

  1311. we are

  1312. always in

  1313. need.

  1314. So the

  1315. humble pray.

  1316. And sixth

  1317. and finally,

  1318. the humble

  1319. are thankful.

  1320. The humble

  1321. are thankful.

  1322. Namely,

  1323. the humble

  1324. are thankful

  1325. for God's

  1326. grace to

  1327. them.

  1328. Recognizing

  1329. our utter

  1330. unworthiness

  1331. to receive

  1332. such favor,

  1333. we exult

  1334. in God's

  1335. great

  1336. goodness.

  1337. grace to

  1338. us.

  1339. Why,

  1340. O Lord,

  1341. me,

  1342. wretch that

  1343. I am,

  1344. why would

  1345. you save

  1346. my soul?

  1347. Makes me

  1348. his,

  1349. restores me

  1350. to him,

  1351. calls me

  1352. blessed,

  1353. calls me

  1354. his child,

  1355. Jesus calls

  1356. me his

  1357. friend and

  1358. brother.

  1359. Why me?

  1360. I was set

  1361. against you

  1362. in every

  1363. way.

  1364. What

  1365. grace

  1366. to us.

  1367. So,

  1368. why are the

  1369. poor in

  1370. spirit declared

  1371. by Jesus

  1372. to be

  1373. blessed?

  1374. Flourishing

  1375. are you

  1376. who recognize

  1377. your utter

  1378. dependence

  1379. because theirs

  1380. is the

  1381. kingdom

  1382. of heaven.

  1383. They are

  1384. citizens of

  1385. the kingdom

  1386. of God.

  1387. God is

  1388. their God

  1389. and they

  1390. are God's

  1391. people.

  1392. Is this

  1393. true of you

  1394. this morning?

  1395. This

  1396. first of the

  1397. blessings is

  1398. a succinct

  1399. statement

  1400. of the

  1401. doctrine of

  1402. justification

  1403. by faith

  1404. alone.

  1405. It simply

  1406. says we

  1407. will not

  1408. be found

  1409. right before

  1410. God,

  1411. declared

  1412. righteous

  1413. before God

  1414. of any

  1415. merit of

  1416. our own

  1417. doing.

  1418. We must

  1419. first be

  1420. humbled,

  1421. be found

  1422. spiritually

  1423. impoverished

  1424. that we

  1425. might find

  1426. our righteousness

  1427. in Christ,

  1428. that we

  1429. would bank

  1430. everything

  1431. on his

  1432. righteousness

  1433. because we

  1434. have none

  1435. of our

  1436. own.

  1437. If we

  1438. don't first

  1439. recognize our

  1440. spiritual

  1441. poverty and

  1442. then turn

  1443. to God

  1444. by faith

  1445. in Jesus

  1446. Christ,

  1447. then we

  1448. are not

  1449. saved from

  1450. the wrath

  1451. due our

  1452. sin.

  1453. We are

  1454. enemies of

  1455. God and

  1456. citizens of

  1457. the world

  1458. that will

  1459. be destroyed.

  1460. Praise be

  1461. to God

  1462. that the

  1463. humble who

  1464. flee to

  1465. him in

  1466. Christ are

  1467. granted the

  1468. right to

  1469. be citizens

  1470. of a

  1471. heavenly

  1472. kingdom.

  1473. In

  1474. closing,

  1475. I want to

  1476. read to

  1477. you just a

  1478. little bit

  1479. from John

  1480. Bunyan's

  1481. The Pilgrim's

  1482. Progress.

  1483. I commend

  1484. this book

  1485. to you.

  1486. If you

  1487. stay here

  1488. long enough,

  1489. I will

  1490. eventually read

  1491. every part

  1492. of it to

  1493. you in

  1494. preaching.

  1495. Bunyan

  1496. writes this

  1497. allegory as

  1498. a dream.

  1499. So he has

  1500. a dream,

  1501. and I just

  1502. want you to

  1503. hear it's

  1504. about a

  1505. man by

  1506. the name

  1507. of Christian

  1508. going on

  1509. this process,

  1510. being saved,

  1511. and going on

  1512. this process

  1513. of following

  1514. Christ.

  1515. Bunyan

  1516. writes,

  1517. I dreamed

  1518. and behold

  1519. I saw

  1520. a man

  1521. clothed

  1522. in rags

  1523. standing

  1524. in a

  1525. certain

  1526. place,

  1527. this is

  1528. Christian,

  1529. with his

  1530. face turned

  1531. away from

  1532. his own

  1533. house,

  1534. a book

  1535. in his

  1536. hand,

  1537. and a

  1538. great

  1539. burden

  1540. on his

  1541. back.

  1542. Burden

  1543. is the

  1544. weight

  1545. of his

  1546. sin,

  1547. his

  1548. recognition

  1549. of his

  1550. spiritual

  1551. poverty.

  1552. I looked

  1553. and saw

  1554. him open

  1555. the book

  1556. and read

  1557. therein,

  1558. and as

  1559. he read,

  1560. he wept

  1561. and trembled.

  1562. And not

  1563. being able

  1564. to contain

  1565. himself any

  1566. longer,

  1567. he broke

  1568. out with

  1569. a lamentable

  1570. cry saying,

  1571. what shall

  1572. I do?

  1573. Later

  1574. in the

  1575. text,

  1576. therefore,

  1577. in this

  1578. plight,

  1579. he went

  1580. home and

  1581. strained

  1582. himself as

  1583. long as

  1584. he could

  1585. so that

  1586. his wife

  1587. and children

  1588. would not

  1589. notice his

  1590. distress.

  1591. But he

  1592. could not

  1593. be silent

  1594. long for

  1595. the reason

  1596. that his

  1597. trouble

  1598. increased.

  1599. Therefore,

  1600. at length,

  1601. he broke

  1602. his mind

  1603. to his

  1604. wife and

  1605. children and

  1606. thus began

  1607. to talk to

  1608. them.

  1609. Oh,

  1610. my dear

  1611. wife,

  1612. he said,

  1613. and you,

  1614. the children

  1615. of my

  1616. deepest

  1617. affections,

  1618. I,

  1619. your dear

  1620. friend,

  1621. am myself

  1622. undone

  1623. by reason

  1624. of a burden

  1625. that weighs

  1626. heavily upon

  1627. me.

  1628. Moreover,

  1629. I am

  1630. certainly

  1631. informed that

  1632. this,

  1633. our city,

  1634. will be

  1635. burned

  1636. with fire

  1637. from heaven

  1638. in which

  1639. fearful overthrow

  1640. both myself

  1641. with you,

  1642. my wife,

  1643. and sweet

  1644. babes,

  1645. shall come

  1646. to a

  1647. miserable

  1648. ruin,

  1649. except some

  1650. way of escape

  1651. can be found

  1652. whereby we

  1653. may be

  1654. delivered.

  1655. And he does

  1656. go on a

  1657. journey,

  1658. and he is

  1659. delivered from

  1660. his burden,

  1661. and he does

  1662. arrive at the

  1663. final destination,

  1664. the celestial

  1665. city,

  1666. and his

  1667. wife later

  1668. comes and

  1669. does the

  1670. same.

  1671. But this is

  1672. where we

  1673. find ourselves,

  1674. poor in

  1675. spirit,

  1676. but knowing

  1677. where to

  1678. turn if

  1679. we are

  1680. blessed,

  1681. finding ourselves

  1682. in Christ,

  1683. clothed in

  1684. his

  1685. righteousness.

  1686. And if you

  1687. can't say

  1688. with the

  1689. confidence that

  1690. you have

  1691. placed believing

  1692. faith in

  1693. Jesus Christ,

  1694. then you

  1695. are a

  1696. pilgrim,

  1697. not yet set

  1698. out on that

  1699. journey,

  1700. living in

  1701. the city

  1702. of destruction,

  1703. just waiting,

  1704. for the

  1705. doom

  1706. that will

  1707. come.

  1708. Turn

  1709. to faith

  1710. in Christ.

  1711. Blessed

  1712. are the

  1713. poor in

  1714. spirit,

  1715. for theirs

  1716. is the

  1717. kingdom

  1718. of

  1719. heaven.

  1720. Let's

  1721. pray together.

  1722. Let's
