  1. Our text for this morning will be Matthew chapter 5 and verse 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. ! Just a couple of weeks ago, we began looking together at the Sermon on the Mount,

  3. this most famous of Jesus' teaching.

  4. And we have discussed so far the first four verses,

  5. where we noted first in verses 1 and 2,

  6. who it was that Jesus was teaching.

  7. Matthew records,

  8. For seeing the crowds, He went up on the mountain,

  9. and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him,

  10. and He opened His mouth and taught them, saying...

  11. So we see that Jesus was teaching His disciples.

  12. There's a larger crowd gathering around,

  13. and certainly the teaching spills out and beyond.

  14. And as we get through His Sermon and on into chapter 7,

  15. there's great warning that's issued.

  16. And so it seems maybe even the audience's attention of Jesus

  17. shifts a little as it goes on.

  18. But we know, at very least,

  19. His primary core audience

  20. are those who were already following Him and His ways.

  21. He was speaking to those who were citizens of His kingdom.

  22. Back in chapter 4, verse 17,

  23. Matthew records the very beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  24. where He writes,

  25. from that time Jesus began to preach,

  26. saying,

  27. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  28. The Sermon on the Mount is a declaration of the kingdom of God

  29. with Jesus as its king.

  30. And because the king has come,

  31. the kingdom has come.

  32. And Jesus here is teaching

  33. what those who are citizens of His kingdom will look like.

  34. So He begins teaching them,

  35. verse 3,

  36. Blessed are the poor in spirit,

  37. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  38. We are, apart from Christ,

  39. spiritually bankrupt.

  40. You have no good thing to offer God.

  41. And if you are to be saved from the wrath to come,

  42. you will have to throw yourself

  43. upon the mercy of God

  44. found in Jesus Christ.

  45. It is those who see their spiritual poverty

  46. who possess the kingdom of heaven.

  47. And therefore,

  48. Jesus declares them blessed.

  49. In verse 4, Jesus says,

  50. Blessed are those who mourn,

  51. for they shall be comforted.

  52. Having recognized our spiritual poverty

  53. and the spiritual poverty of the world

  54. in which we live,

  55. citizens of the kingdom of God

  56. will be mourners

  57. over the brokenness that we see,

  58. both ours and others.

  59. And it is those who mourn over sin

  60. who will be comforted.

  61. And therefore,

  62. Jesus calls them blessed.

  63. Now, I have said to you,

  64. this word,

  65. blessed,

  66. is a very difficult one

  67. for us to understand in English.

  68. The original Greek word

  69. is so layered and textured.

  70. And so,

  71. we've been doing our best

  72. kind of week to week

  73. to give some feel

  74. to what the word means.

  75. I don't have anything astounding

  76. to add to what I've said already,

  77. but just let me remind you

  78. that there's not a direct single word

  79. for this Greek word,

  80. makarios.

  81. We try with blessed,

  82. happy,

  83. joyful,

  84. we could say doing well,

  85. thriving.

  86. I've posited to you

  87. my favorite,

  88. flourishing from

  89. Jonathan Pennington's book.

  90. Jesus' teaching on the kingdom of heaven

  91. enters into a world

  92. that has been turned upside down

  93. by sin.

  94. And His teaching seeks

  95. to turn it right side up.

  96. It's about the kingdom coming.

  97. This kingdom that lives in contradiction

  98. to the kingdom of the world.

  99. And because the teaching

  100. has this intention to it,

  101. the carnal mind

  102. has a very difficult time

  103. understanding it.

  104. It seems backwards.

  105. It is the humble,

  106. sad,

  107. meek,

  108. merciful,

  109. peacemaking,

  110. persecuted pursuers

  111. of righteousness

  112. that are well

  113. and will do well

  114. forever.

  115. These are the kinds

  116. of citizens

  117. that flourish.

  118. We have before us this morning

  119. the third of Jesus' declarations

  120. of blessing.

  121. blessing.

  122. So join me in a careful consideration

  123. of Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:5

  124. verse 5.

  125. Before I read it

  126. for our benefit,

  127. let me remind you,

  128. beloved,

  129. that this is God's

  130. word to us.

  131. It was written for His glory

  132. and our good.

  133. And we would all do well

  134. to listen to it

  135. in order to believe

  136. its promises

  137. and obey

  138. its commands.

  139. Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:5

  140. verse 5.

  141. Jesus said,

  142. blessed are the meek

  143. for they shall inherit

  144. the earth.

  145. So,

  146. what does it mean

  147. to be meek?

  148. It's another one of those

  149. words that can have

  150. some difficulty

  151. for us

  152. trying to wrap

  153. our minds

  154. around exactly

  155. what Jesus means here

  156. by meekness.

  157. and those who are meek

  158. are blessed.

  159. Let me start by saying

  160. that meekness

  161. is not a natural

  162. inclination.

  163. Those who belong

  164. to the kingdom of God

  165. gain a recognition

  166. of their spiritual poverty,

  167. a deep sadness

  168. over their sin

  169. and the sin of the world,

  170. and meekness

  171. by a work

  172. of the Spirit of God

  173. upon them.

  174. The natural inclination

  175. of man

  176. is not toward

  177. a small view of self,

  178. but a large view of self.

  179. The natural way

  180. of a person

  181. is to exalt themselves,

  182. not humble themselves.

  183. Left alone,

  184. we are self-aggrandizing,

  185. self-protecting,

  186. self-justifying.

  187. The largely Jewish audience

  188. that Matthew wrote

  189. this letter for

  190. would have been

  191. absolutely dumbfounded

  192. by such teaching,

  193. especially from a man

  194. who claimed to be

  195. the Messiah.

  196. They were looking

  197. to the Messiah

  198. for deliverance

  199. from their oppressor,

  200. Rome.

  201. They wanted the Messiah

  202. to come as a military conqueror,

  203. mighty and vanquishing.

  204. They loved texts

  205. like Isaiah chapter 35,

    Isaiah 35:3

  206. verse 3 and 4,

  207. which reads,

  208. Strengthen the weak hands

  209. and make firm

  210. the feeble knees.

  211. Say to those

  212. who have anxious heart,

  213. Be strong.

  214. Fear not.

  215. Behold,

  216. your God will come

  217. with vengeance,

  218. with the recompense

  219. of God.

  220. He will come

  221. and save you.

  222. They loved texts

  223. like this,

  224. but did not want

  225. to read them

  226. in the greater context

  227. of the Old Testament

  228. prophecy.

  229. For example,

  230. that was Isaiah 35,

  231. 3 and 4.

  232. Let me read to you

  233. Isaiah 53,

  234. 3 and 4.

  235. Speaking of Christ,

  236. the Messiah,

  237. He was despised

  238. and rejected by men,

  239. a man of sorrows

  240. and acquainted with grief.

  241. And as one from whom

  242. men hide their faces,

  243. He was despised,

  244. and we esteemed Him not.

  245. Surely,

  246. He has borne our griefs

  247. and carried our sorrows,

  248. yet we esteemed Him stricken,

  249. smitten by God

  250. and afflicted.

  251. This was a strange teaching.

  252. Meekness is not the way

  253. of the world.

  254. Meekness is certainly

  255. a spirit-worked character quality.

  256. It is also not a character quality

  257. that we possess with perfection

  258. on this side of heaven,

  259. but it is a quality

  260. in which we grow

  261. as God graciously works

  262. in us.

  263. I pray this morning

  264. that He will work in you

  265. and in me

  266. as we learn together

  267. more about this meekness.

  268. So,

  269. let's take a look

  270. at some examples

  271. of meekness from the Scripture

  272. to attempt to wrap our mind

  273. about what is really

  274. meant by the Word.

  275. So I want to walk you through

  276. some characters.

  277. I'm going to invite you

  278. to turn with me

  279. to these passages.

  280. You'll keep your head

  281. more in the game

  282. if you're looking as well

  283. at the text

  284. that I'm going to read to you.

  285. And let's start with Abraham.

  286. Called Abram

  287. in the text I'll read to you

  288. this morning.

  289. His name had yet to be changed

  290. in Genesis chapter 13.

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  291. So please join me there.

  292. Genesis chapter 13

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  293. and verse 8.

  294. So God has made a covenant

  295. with Abram.

  296. Part of which included

  297. the giving to him

  298. of land.

  299. And you remember

  300. that Abram's nephew Lot

  301. tagged along with him.

  302. The promise was not given to Lot.

  303. The promise was given to Abram.

  304. He is Lot's elder.

  305. He is his uncle.

  306. And he has a promise.

  307. And some contention arose

  308. amongst the herdsmen

  309. because there wasn't enough land

  310. where they were camped

  311. to keep the herds fed.

  312. Right?

  313. So they're starting

  314. to have conflict

  315. over who gets to graze

  316. animals where.

  317. And then verse 8

  318. and following

  319. records for us.

  320. Then Abram said to Lot,

  321. Let there be no strife

  322. between you and me

  323. and between your herdsmen

  324. and my herdsmen

  325. for we are kinsmen.

  326. Is not the whole land

  327. before you?

  328. Separate yourself from me.

  329. If you take the left hand

  330. then I will go to the right.

  331. Or if you take the right hand

  332. then I will go to the left.

  333. Here we find Abram

  334. had every right over the land.

  335. Right?

  336. The covenant promise

  337. had been given to him.

  338. He's Lot's elder.

  339. And his uncle.

  340. And he could have simply said,

  341. Hey Lot, you go there

  342. because I want this

  343. choicest of property.

  344. But rather,

  345. we find Abram

  346. as an expression of meekness

  347. saying instead,

  348. Let's not have conflict

  349. amongst us.

  350. Right?

  351. You pick where you would like to go

  352. and I'll go to the other place.

  353. I'll take what's left over.

  354. Turn over to Genesis chapter 45

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  355. and we read here

  356. of the story of Joseph.

  357. Remember Joseph,

  358. the youngest of his brothers

  359. received dreams

  360. that he'd be great amongst them

  361. and his brothers

  362. did not like him for this

  363. so they threw him in a well

  364. and rather than killing him

  365. pulled him out of a well

  366. and sold him into slavery.

  367. And he finds himself in Egypt

  368. and through a number of astounding

  369. and sad circumstances,

  370. he finds himself ruling over

  371. the provision of grain,

  372. putting it away

  373. and delving it back out.

  374. And a famine grows up in the land

  375. and his brothers come to Egypt

  376. to bring grain back home.

  377. And when Joseph reveals himself

  378. to his brothers,

  379. we read this in chapter 45

  380. verses 1 and following.

  381. Then Joseph could not control himself

  382. before all those who stood by him.

  383. He cried,

  384. Make everyone go out for me.

  385. So no one stayed with him

  386. when Joseph made himself known

  387. to his brothers.

  388. And he wept aloud

  389. so that the Egyptians heard it

  390. and the household of Pharaoh heard it.

  391. Now just picture,

  392. this is the man of power.

  393. This is the younger brother,

  394. but he has been placed

  395. in a position of power

  396. and his brothers have come to him

  397. as beggars.

  398. And what does he do?

  399. He sends out the Egyptians

  400. and reveals himself to his brothers

  401. and he weeps over this.

  402. And Joseph said to his brothers,

  403. verse 3,

  404. I am Joseph.

  405. Is my father still alive?

  406. But his brothers could not answer him

  407. for they were dismayed

  408. at his presence.

  409. So Joseph said to his brothers,

  410. Come near to me, please.

  411. And they came near and he said,

  412. I am your brother, Joseph,

  413. whom you sold into Egypt.

  414. And now do not be distressed

  415. or angry with yourselves

  416. because you sold me here.

  417. For God sent me before you

  418. to preserve life.

  419. And then we read later,

  420. I think it's chapter 51,

  421. if I'm remembering correctly.

  422. We famously hear Joseph say,

  423. What you meant for evil,

  424. God meant for good.

  425. And so here we see

  426. that Joseph entrusts himself to God

  427. and God's providence,

  428. his good purpose in the situation.

  429. And he doesn't seek retribution.

  430. He doesn't seek to defend his right.

  431. He has been wronged

  432. as the younger brother,

  433. but rather offers forgiveness

  434. to his brothers.

  435. It's another expression of meekness.

  436. Okay.

  437. Flip back to the New Testament.

  438. Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  439. Let's look a little at the life of Moses.

  440. It's the writer of Hebrews.

  441. Very brief summary of Moses' life

  442. found in chapter 11.

  443. You remember Moses has become

  444. the adopted son of Pharaoh.

  445. Pharaoh held the power of Egypt

  446. as the new Pharaoh's adopted brother,

  447. but chose rather

  448. to stand up for his kinsmen

  449. to kill an Egyptian

  450. and fled off into the wilderness.

  451. So in verse 24 and following,

  452. By faith Moses,

  453. when he was grown up,

  454. refused to be called

  455. the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

  456. choosing rather

  457. to be mistreated

  458. with the people of God

  459. than to enjoy

  460. the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  461. He considered,

  462. I love this, right?

  463. Moses considered,

  464. so the writer of Hebrews

  465. is telling us,

  466. he considered

  467. the reproach of Christ

  468. greater wealth

  469. than the treasures of Egypt,

  470. for he was looking

  471. to the reward.

  472. So rather than receiving

  473. what was due him,

  474. which he could have laid claim to,

  475. he instead chose

  476. to go and be with God's people

  477. and to be mistreated

  478. as God's people

  479. because he was looking

  480. to something greater

  481. and beyond.

  482. Numbers chapter 12,

    Numbers 12:3

  483. verse 3 records for us

  484. that Moses was very meek,

  485. more than all people

  486. who were on the face

  487. of the earth.

  488. Okay, back to the Old Testament.

  489. 1 Samuel chapter 18.

    1 Samuel 18 chapter mention

  490. You don't need to be ashamed

  491. for not being able

  492. to find these books

  493. quickly in your Bible,

  494. but you'll do well

  495. to learn how to find books

  496. quickly in your Bible.

  497. Become familiar

  498. with this book.

  499. Hopefully this helps you

  500. in doing that.

  501. 1 Samuel chapter 18,

    1 Samuel 18 chapter mention

  502. beginning in verse 20.

  503. Now, David at this point

  504. in 1 Samuel

  505. has already been anointed

  506. king over Israel.

  507. Saul is still reigning,

  508. king,

  509. but Samuel has anointed

  510. David king.

  511. David has already

  512. killed Goliath.

  513. He's become the champion

  514. of Israel as well.

  515. The middle of,

  516. I think it's chapter 16,

  517. records for us

  518. that the Spirit of God

  519. left Saul

  520. and the Spirit of God

  521. rested on David.

  522. So he's got God's Spirit

  523. resting on him,

  524. which was a more unique thing

  525. in this day

  526. than it is in ours.

  527. So David already had

  528. a significant place

  529. and yet he found himself

  530. serving under Saul

  531. with a great deal

  532. of meekness.

  533. Saul didn't want him

  534. in the temple any longer,

  535. so he put him in charge

  536. of a legion of men.

  537. He had hoped that he would be killed

  538. by the Philistines,

  539. but David,

  540. because of God's favor,

  541. was triumphing

  542. and triumphing greatly

  543. over them.

  544. So, Saul offered

  545. his oldest daughter

  546. to David.

  547. David said,

  548. Who am I

  549. that I would become

  550. the son-in-law of a king?

  551. This is the beginning

  552. of chapter 18.

  553. Saul instead gives

  554. his oldest daughter away

  555. to somebody else.

  556. So he had promised,

  557. then he went back

  558. on his promise

  559. and gave his older daughter away.

  560. And then verse 20 says,

  561. Now Saul's daughter,

  562. Michael,

  563. loved David.

  564. And they told Saul,

  565. and the thing pleased him.

  566. Saul thought,

  567. Let me give her to him

  568. that she may be a snare for him

  569. and that the hand

  570. of the Philistines

  571. may be against him.

  572. Therefore,

  573. Saul said to David

  574. a second time,

  575. You shall now be

  576. my son-in-law.

  577. Right?

  578. So it's being set up

  579. as a trap.

  580. Saul commanded his servants,

  581. speak to David in private

  582. and say,

  583. Behold,

  584. the king has delighted in you

  585. and all his servants

  586. love you.

  587. Now then become

  588. the king's son-in-law.

  589. And Saul's servants

  590. spoke these words

  591. in the ears of David.

  592. And David said,

  593. Listen to what David says.

  594. Remember where he is,

  595. who he is at this point.

  596. Does it seem to you

  597. a little thing

  598. to become the king's son-in-law?

  599. Since I am a poor man

  600. and have no reputation.

  601. See what David thought of himself.

  602. Right?

  603. He had a reputation

  604. by this point.

  605. I have no reputation.

  606. And the servants of Saul

  607. told him,

  608. Thus and so

  609. did David speak.

  610. Then Saul said,

  611. I'm reading this to you

  612. just for closure

  613. on the story.

  614. Thus shall you say to David,

  615. The king desires

  616. no bride price

  617. except a hundred foreskins

  618. of the Philistines

  619. that he may be avenged

  620. of the king's enemies.

  621. Now Saul thought

  622. to make David fall

  623. by the hand

  624. of the Philistines.

  625. And if you read on,

  626. he delivers twice,

  627. twice as many

  628. of the price

  629. that Saul

  630. demanded of him.

  631. So here again,

  632. this expression

  633. of meekness.

  634. Why would the king

  635. want to make me

  636. his son-in-law?

  637. David was very clearly

  638. a mighty man

  639. and had done mighty things

  640. and had a great reputation.

  641. Okay,

  642. a couple of New Testament characters.

  643. Stephen,

  644. Acts chapter 7.

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  645. Amen.

  646. Amen.

  647. Amen.

  648. Amen.

  649. Amen.

  650. Amen.

  651. I hope that you don't mind this.

  652. This seems better to me

  653. than reading you

  654. the definition

  655. out of a theology book.

  656. Stephen is

  657. the first Christian martyr.

  658. He's on trial

  659. before the Sanhedrin.

  660. He speaks boldly out.

  661. They get furious with him

  662. because of the indictment

  663. of the speech

  664. that he brings to them.

  665. Verse 58,

  666. we read in following,

  667. Then they cast him

  668. out of the city

  669. and stoned him.

  670. And the witnesses

  671. laid down their garments

  672. at the feet

  673. of a young man

  674. named Saul.

  675. And as they were

  676. stoning Stephen,

  677. this is what I want you

  678. to see from the text,

  679. as they were stoning Stephen,

  680. he called out,

  681. Lord Jesus,

  682. receive my spirit.

  683. And falling to his knees,

  684. he cried out

  685. with a loud voice,

  686. Would any of us,

  687. like when you're thinking,

  688. think about being stoned,

  689. right,

  690. for simply following Christ

  691. and proclaiming his truth.

  692. And as you're being stoned,

  693. this is the affection you have

  694. towards those stoning you.

  695. He says,

  696. Lord,

  697. do not hold this sin

  698. against them.

  699. He seeks forgiveness,

  700. much like our Lord did

  701. on the cross

  702. for those who were stoning him.

  703. And when he had said this,

  704. he fell asleep.

  705. Paul is a great man

  706. of meekness,

  707. a man with a great deal

  708. of Jewish pedigree,

  709. certainly as an apostle,

  710. arguably,

  711. but I would suggest,

  712. the smartest of the lot,

  713. the most influential of the lot.

  714. His ministry was further reaching

  715. than any of the other apostles.

  716. And yet we can see

  717. and we pick up letter

  718. after letter after letter

  719. this great deal of humility

  720. in the way that he writes.

  721. He gives all glory and honor

  722. to Christ for working in

  723. and through him.

  724. Just a quick example,

  725. Philippians 3,

    Philippians 3:3

  726. verses 3 and 4.

  727. He says,

  728. For we are the circumcision

  729. who worship by the Spirit of God

  730. and glory in Christ Jesus

  731. and put no confidence

  732. in the flesh.

  733. He says,

  734. Though I myself have reason

  735. for confidence in the flesh,

  736. if anyone else thinks

  737. he has reason for confidence

  738. in the flesh,

  739. I have more.

  740. But he says,

  741. I have none.

  742. I have no confidence

  743. in my flesh whatsoever.

  744. And then we know

  745. in Philippians 4,

  746. 13,

  747. a verse not about football games.

  748. He says,

  749. I can do all things

  750. through him

  751. who strengthens me.

  752. Right?

  753. I can serve

  754. the goodness of God

  755. and the glory of Christ

  756. to all peoples everywhere

  757. because I'm strengthened

  758. by him.

  759. But of course,

  760. we would not do well

  761. if we didn't look to

  762. our Lord and Savior,

  763. Jesus Christ,

  764. as the ultimate

  765. and highest example

  766. of what it means

  767. to be meek.

  768. Jesus said this of himself

  769. that he was meek.

  770. Matthew 11, 29,

  771. he said,

  772. Take my yoke upon you

  773. and learn from me,

  774. for I am gentle,

  775. same Greek word,

  776. for meek.

  777. I am meek

  778. and lowly in heart

  779. and you will find rest

  780. for your souls.

  781. And then Paul,

  782. in his letter

  783. to the Philippians,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  784. chapter 2,

  785. sets Christ up

  786. as our example

  787. in this,

  788. verses 5 through 8.

  789. Have this mind

  790. among yourself,

  791. which is yours

  792. in Christ Jesus,

  793. who though he was

  794. in the form of God,

  795. did not count

  796. equality with God

  797. a thing

  798. to be grasped,

  799. but he emptied himself

  800. by taking the form

  801. of a servant,

  802. being born

  803. in the likeness

  804. of men

  805. and being found

  806. in human form,

  807. he humbled himself

  808. by becoming obedient

  809. to the point of death,

  810. even death

  811. on a cross.

  812. So God himself

  813. incarnate,

  814. is what Paul is saying.

  815. God here

  816. in human form,

  817. creator

  818. of the universe,

  819. here

  820. emptied himself

  821. and became a servant

  822. and served

  823. to the point

  824. of death

  825. on a cross.

  826. This is

  827. meekness.

  828. The meek

  829. do not seek

  830. their own good,

  831. but the good

  832. of others.

  833. The meek

  834. do not seek

  835. retribution,

  836. but trust

  837. in the providence

  838. and justice

  839. of God.

  840. The meek

  841. do not seek

  842. to defend

  843. their rights,

  844. knowing

  845. what they truly

  846. deserve.

  847. The meek

  848. do not think

  849. too much

  850. of themselves,

  851. but make much

  852. of God.

  853. Now,

  854. meekness,

  855. and I hope

  856. in all of those

  857. references

  858. and characters,

  859. you got this.

  860. Meekness should not

  861. be equated

  862. with weakness.

  863. The two are not

  864. the same.

  865. Meekness often,

  866. as I said earlier,

  867. is translated

  868. as gentleness.

  869. Meekness

  870. is strength

  871. bridled

  872. and steered

  873. for the glory

  874. of God.

  875. It's strength

  876. aimed

  877. in the right

  878. direction.

  879. Meekness

  880. is Jesus

  881. welcoming

  882. little children

  883. to himself

  884. in Matthew

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  885. chapter 19.

  886. And then

  887. two chapters

  888. later in 21,

  889. making a whip

  890. and driving

  891. the extortioners

  892. out of the temple.

  893. And then

  894. another two chapters

  895. later in chapter 23,

  896. indiving the scribes

  897. and Pharisees

  898. and declares woes

  899. over them.

  900. And then another

  901. two chapters

  902. later in chapter 25,

  903. surrendering

  904. to his accusers

  905. in the garden

  906. of Gethsemane.

  907. All of Jesus'

  908. strength

  909. is aimed

  910. at defending

  911. and magnifying

  912. the fame

  913. of his father.

  914. He yields

  915. his strength

  916. to the will

  917. of God.

  918. So let's look

  919. at some further

  920. instruction

  921. to gain

  922. a little better

  923. understanding

  924. of this teaching

  925. in Matthew

  926. 5.

  927. A couple more

  928. texts for you.

  929. We're going to stay

  930. in the New Testament

  931. now, I think.

  932. Yep, we're going to stay

  933. in the New Testament.

  934. Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26:50

  935. verse 50

  936. and following.

  937. we find Jesus

  938. in the garden

  939. of Gethsemane,

  940. having been

  941. betrayed

  942. by Judas

  943. and his

  944. captors

  945. are coming

  946. to take him

  947. and run him

  948. through this

  949. series of trials

  950. and finally

  951. in his

  952. crucifixion.

  953. we ought

  954. not to forget

  955. who this

  956. Jesus is,

  957. right?

  958. Able

  959. to command

  960. legions

  961. of angels.

  962. He'll say this

  963. in our text

  964. in verse 53.

  965. Verse 50,

  966. Jesus said

  967. to him,

  968. this is the

  969. leader of the guard,

  970. friend,

  971. do what you

  972. came to do.

  973. Then they came

  974. up and laid

  975. hands on Jesus

  976. and seized

  977. him.

  978. And behold,

  979. one of those

  980. who were with

  981. him,

  982. this is Peter,

  983. we know from

  984. Luke's account,

  985. stretched out

  986. his hand

  987. and drew

  988. his sword

  989. and struck

  990. the servant

  991. of the high

  992. priest

  993. and cut

  994. off his

  995. ear.

  996. Malthus,

  997. I think,

  998. is that guy's

  999. name,

  1000. and Jesus

  1001. healed his

  1002. ear

  1003. in John's

  1004. account.

  1005. Then Jesus

  1006. said to him,

  1007. to Peter,

  1008. put your

  1009. sword back

  1010. into its

  1011. place,

  1012. for all

  1013. who take

  1014. the sword

  1015. will perish

  1016. by the sword.

  1017. Do you

  1018. think that I

  1019. cannot appeal

  1020. to my

  1021. father,

  1022. and he

  1023. will at

  1024. once send

  1025. me more

  1026. than twelve

  1027. legions

  1028. of angels?

  1029. And the

  1030. point that

  1031. he's making

  1032. to Peter

  1033. here is that

  1034. there is a

  1035. task at hand.

  1036. God has

  1037. willed that

  1038. something would

  1039. happen,

  1040. and I could

  1041. stop it from

  1042. happening,

  1043. but I submit

  1044. my strength

  1045. to the will

  1046. of the father

  1047. for the sake

  1048. of his name.

  1049. we are

  1050. not to

  1051. be militant

  1052. for our

  1053. own

  1054. sake

  1055. if we

  1056. are found

  1057. meek.

  1058. Now I want

  1059. to be really

  1060. clear at this

  1061. point,

  1062. and I cannot

  1063. develop this

  1064. idea in its

  1065. entirety,

  1066. so my

  1067. apology to

  1068. you on

  1069. this,

  1070. but I

  1071. am not a

  1072. pacifist,

  1073. and you

  1074. shouldn't be

  1075. either.

  1076. I believe

  1077. in just war

  1078. theory,

  1079. Google that,

  1080. you can

  1081. check out

  1082. what that

  1083. means,

  1084. but we

  1085. must think

  1086. very carefully

  1087. about when

  1088. it is

  1089. proper

  1090. to take

  1091. a life,

  1092. and when

  1093. it is

  1094. proper

  1095. to lay

  1096. down

  1097. our

  1098. lives

  1099. for the

  1100. sake

  1101. of

  1102. others.

  1103. Paul

  1104. instructs

  1105. the Ephesians

  1106. in chapter

  1107. 4,

  1108. verses 1

  1109. and 2,

  1110. and the

  1111. word here

  1112. translated

  1113. gentleness

  1114. is the

  1115. same as

  1116. in our

  1117. text this

  1118. morning

  1119. for meek.

  1120. Paul

  1121. writes,

  1122. I

  1123. therefore,

  1124. a prisoner

  1125. for the

  1126. Lord,

  1127. urge you

  1128. to walk

  1129. in a

  1130. manner

  1131. worthy

  1132. of the

  1133. calling

  1134. to which

  1135. you have

  1136. been

  1137. called

  1138. with all

  1139. humility

  1140. and gentleness

  1141. with patience

  1142. bearing with

  1143. one another

  1144. in love.

  1145. We are to

  1146. lay aside

  1147. our

  1148. preferences

  1149. and our

  1150. sensitivities

  1151. for the

  1152. sake

  1153. of love.

  1154. We are

  1155. to be

  1156. willing

  1157. to not

  1158. stand

  1159. our

  1160. ground

  1161. and demand

  1162. what's

  1163. ours

  1164. in every

  1165. circumstance

  1166. for the

  1167. sake

  1168. of

  1169. love.

  1170. And again,

  1171. Colossians 3.12,

  1172. Paul writes,

  1173. put on then

  1174. as God's

  1175. chosen ones,

  1176. holy and

  1177. beloved,

  1178. compassionate

  1179. hearts,

  1180. kindness,

  1181. humility,

  1182. meekness,

  1183. and patience.

  1184. Paul writes

  1185. to Titus

  1186. in chapter 3

  1187. verses 1

  1188. and 2,

  1189. instructions

  1190. for how

  1191. he should

  1192. instruct

  1193. the church

  1194. in good

  1195. works.

  1196. The word

  1197. here

  1198. translated

  1199. gentle

  1200. is a

  1201. different

  1202. word

  1203. than

  1204. in our

  1205. text

  1206. this

  1207. morning,

  1208. but I

  1209. believe

  1210. Paul

  1211. is

  1212. getting

  1213. at

  1214. the

  1215. whole

  1216. idea

  1217. of

  1218. meekness

  1219. in the

  1220. following

  1221. verses.

  1222. So this

  1223. is Titus 3

    Titus 3:1

  1224. verses 1

  1225. and 2.

  1226. Remind

  1227. them

  1228. to be

  1229. submissive

  1230. to be

  1231. submissive

  1232. to rulers

  1233. and

  1234. authorities,

  1235. to be

  1236. obedient,

  1237. to be

  1238. ready

  1239. for every

  1240. good work,

  1241. to speak

  1242. evil of

  1243. no one,

  1244. to avoid

  1245. quarreling,

  1246. to be

  1247. gentle,

  1248. and to

  1249. show

  1250. perfect

  1251. courtesy

  1252. toward all

  1253. people.

  1254. Beloved,

  1255. is this

  1256. something that

  1257. characterizes

  1258. the American

  1259. church

  1260. today?

  1261. I'm

  1262. afraid

  1263. it's

  1264. not,

  1265. at least

  1266. not in

  1267. what we

  1268. see

  1269. published

  1270. for our

  1271. consumption.

  1272. It seems

  1273. so often

  1274. that the

  1275. church

  1276. is

  1277. loudly

  1278. railing

  1279. against

  1280. anything

  1281. and

  1282. everything

  1283. that might

  1284. come

  1285. its way.

  1286. Listen to

  1287. what the

  1288. apostle Peter

  1289. says,

  1290. 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:18

  1291. verse 18.

  1292. Here we're

  1293. going to see

  1294. the word

  1295. gentleness

  1296. again,

  1297. very same

  1298. as the

  1299. Greek word

  1300. for meek

  1301. in our

  1302. text today.

  1303. He says,

  1304. in your

  1305. hearts,

  1306. honor Christ

  1307. the Lord

  1308. as holy.

  1309. Christ the

  1310. Lord as

  1311. holy.

  1312. Always

  1313. being prepared

  1314. to make

  1315. a defense

  1316. to anyone

  1317. asks you

  1318. for a

  1319. reason,

  1320. for the

  1321. hope that

  1322. is in

  1323. you.

  1324. So be

  1325. ready to

  1326. give an

  1327. answer to

  1328. those that

  1329. would ask,

  1330. what is

  1331. this hope

  1332. that you

  1333. have?

  1334. Then Peter

  1335. says,

  1336. yet do it

  1337. with

  1338. gentleness

  1339. and

  1340. respect.

  1341. It is

  1342. generally

  1343. true

  1344. that the

  1345. minority

  1346. of any

  1347. particular

  1348. kind

  1349. feels the

  1350. need

  1351. to be

  1352. the

  1353. loudest.

  1354. We can

  1355. witness this

  1356. so often

  1357. in our

  1358. day.

  1359. They're

  1360. hoping

  1361. that their

  1362. volume

  1363. will have

  1364. them

  1365. heard.

  1366. But we

  1367. are instructed

  1368. to be

  1369. meek

  1370. and

  1371. respectful.

  1372. As

  1373. faithful

  1374. Christians

  1375. are

  1376. continually

  1377. pushed

  1378. to the

  1379. margins

  1380. of our

  1381. society,

  1382. a great

  1383. temptation

  1384. will rise

  1385. within us

  1386. and I

  1387. believe has

  1388. risen within

  1389. us and

  1390. has been

  1391. poorly

  1392. dealt

  1393. with.

  1394. This

  1395. temptation

  1396. to get

  1397. obnoxious,

  1398. to complain

  1399. about what

  1400. picture is on

  1401. a Starbucks

  1402. cup.

  1403. Who cares?

  1404. Who cares?

  1405. Is this the

  1406. thing we want

  1407. to be known

  1408. for?

  1409. May it

  1410. not be.

  1411. This would

  1412. not be

  1413. meek.

  1414. This would

  1415. not be

  1416. taking our

  1417. mighty dollar

  1418. to vote for

  1419. how we'd

  1420. have such

  1421. and such

  1422. dealt

  1423. with.

  1424. Hebrews

  1425. 10,

  1426. 34.

  1427. I'll give

  1428. you a final

  1429. example.

  1430. meekness

  1431. in the

  1432. scripture.

  1433. This runs

  1434. beloved,

  1435. counterintuitive.

  1436. It runs

  1437. against the

  1438. grain of

  1439. the world.

  1440. This to

  1441. the world's

  1442. thinking,

  1443. what I'm

  1444. going to

  1445. read to

  1446. you,

  1447. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:34

  1448. 10,

  1449. verse 34,

  1450. is upside

  1451. down.

  1452. But what I'm

  1453. saying to

  1454. you is that

  1455. the world's

  1456. actually upside

  1457. down.

  1458. This is

  1459. right side

  1460. up.

  1461. This is

  1462. what people

  1463. who are

  1464. citizens of

  1465. God's

  1466. kingdom

  1467. look like.

  1468. This is

  1469. how they

  1470. behave.

  1471. in the

  1472. midst of

  1473. oppression.

  1474. The

  1475. writer of

  1476. Hebrews

  1477. says,

  1478. for you

  1479. had

  1480. compassion

  1481. on those

  1482. in prison.

  1483. So those

  1484. who were

  1485. thrown into

  1486. prison had

  1487. no care.

  1488. It's not

  1489. like the

  1490. prison systems

  1491. of our

  1492. day.

  1493. They had

  1494. no care

  1495. unless

  1496. someone

  1497. came to

  1498. them,

  1499. identified

  1500. with them,

  1501. and provided

  1502. for them.

  1503. Meals,

  1504. water,

  1505. medical,

  1506. care.

  1507. The job

  1508. of the

  1509. jailer

  1510. was just

  1511. to keep

  1512. them in.

  1513. That was

  1514. it.

  1515. So these

  1516. early

  1517. Christians

  1518. were identifying

  1519. themselves as

  1520. Christians as

  1521. they went to

  1522. go care for

  1523. those who

  1524. were in

  1525. prison because

  1526. they were

  1527. Christians.

  1528. And look

  1529. what happens,

  1530. this strange

  1531. thing.

  1532. And you

  1533. joyfully

  1534. accepted the

  1535. plundering of

  1536. your property.

  1537. So they're

  1538. being labeled

  1539. as, maybe

  1540. they're

  1541. traveling to

  1542. the prison.

  1543. People are

  1544. coming in,

  1545. destroying

  1546. their homes,

  1547. taking their

  1548. property.

  1549. But they

  1550. joyfully

  1551. accepted it.

  1552. Why?

  1553. How did

  1554. they do

  1555. this?

  1556. Since you

  1557. knew that

  1558. you yourselves

  1559. had a better

  1560. possession

  1561. and an

  1562. abiding

  1563. one.

  1564. Which brings

  1565. us to a

  1566. final question

  1567. which I'll

  1568. answer in

  1569. brief.

  1570. Why are

  1571. the meek

  1572. declared

  1573. blessed?

  1574. Jesus

  1575. declares

  1576. his proclamation

  1577. over them,

  1578. blessed are

  1579. the meek.

  1580. Why?

  1581. Because

  1582. they

  1583. shall

  1584. inherit

  1585. the earth.

  1586. Jesus

  1587. is making

  1588. an

  1589. eschatological

  1590. statement,

  1591. primarily.

  1592. Maybe there's

  1593. some temporary

  1594. bleed through,

  1595. but he's

  1596. making

  1597. primarily

  1598. an

  1599. eschatological,

  1600. an end

  1601. times

  1602. statement.

  1603. He is

  1604. saying

  1605. that one

  1606. day all

  1607. things will

  1608. be made

  1609. right,

  1610. and the

  1611. righteous

  1612. will have

  1613. their

  1614. proper

  1615. inheritance.

  1616. Those of

  1617. us who

  1618. walk in

  1619. this world

  1620. as children

  1621. of God

  1622. will not

  1623. receive what

  1624. we believe

  1625. we ought

  1626. to receive.

  1627. But we

  1628. are looking

  1629. to a

  1630. greater

  1631. possession,

  1632. a greater

  1633. treasure,

  1634. and an

  1635. abiding

  1636. one,

  1637. one that

  1638. will last

  1639. forever

  1640. beyond

  1641. this

  1642. world.

  1643. Jesus

  1644. here in

  1645. Matthew

  1646. 5.5

  1647. is

  1648. quoting

  1649. directly

  1650. from

  1651. Psalm

    Psalms 37:11

  1652. 37

  1653. verse

  1654. 11.

  1655. Before I

  1656. read

  1657. verse 11

  1658. to you,

  1659. though,

  1660. I want

  1661. to read

  1662. verse

  1663. 10.

  1664. Those

  1665. of us

  1666. who are

  1667. in

  1668. Christ,

  1669. we're

  1670. looking

  1671. to

  1672. this

  1673. day.

  1674. If

  1675. there's

  1676. anyone

  1677. here

  1678. who

  1679. is

  1680. not

  1681. in

  1682. Christ,

  1683. maybe

  1684. you're

  1685. even

  1686. asking

  1687. yourself

  1688. this

  1689. question

  1690. as

  1691. we've

  1692. just

  1693. skipped

  1694. a

  1695. rock

  1696. off

  1697. the

  1698. surface

  1699. of

  1700. what

  1701. it

  1702. means

  1703. to be

  1704. !

  1705. meek,

  1706. you'd

  1707. say,

  1708. this

  1709. doesn't

  1710. characterize

  1711. my

  1712. life

  1713. at

  1714. all.

  1715. I

  1716. am

  1717. self

  1718. aggrandizing,

  1719. I

  1720. am

  1721. self

  1722. seeking,

  1723. I

  1724. do

  1725. want

  1726. to

  1727. stand

  1728. up

  1729. for

  1730. what's

  1731. mine.

  1732. You

  1733. may

  1734. find

  1735. that

  1736. you're

  1737. not

  1738. a

  1739. citizen

  1740. of

  1741. God's

  1742. kingdom.

  1743. And

  1744. what

  1745. you're

  1746. awaiting

  1747. is

  1748. a

  1749. final

  1750. and

  1751. full

  1752. and

  1753. eternal

  1754. destruction.

  1755. Psalm

  1756. 37

  1757. 10

  1758. says

  1759. this,

  1760. in

  1761. just

  1762. a

  1763. little

  1764. while

  1765. the

  1766. wicked

  1767. will

  1768. be

  1769. no

  1770. more.

  1771. Though

  1772. you

  1773. look

  1774. carefully

  1775. at

  1776. his

  1777. he

  1778. will

  1779. not

  1780. be

  1781. there.

  1782. But

  1783. verse

  1784. 11,

  1785. Jesus

  1786. hears

  1787. quoting,

  1788. but

  1789. the

  1790. meek

  1791. shall

  1792. inherit

  1793. the

  1794. land

  1795. and

  1796. delight

  1797. themselves

  1798. in

  1799. abundant

  1800. peace.

  1801. What a

  1802. glorious

  1803. promise

  1804. this is

  1805. to us.

  1806. I

  1807. pray,

  1808. beloved,

  1809. that we

  1810. would find

  1811. ourselves

  1812. those

  1813. in

  1814. the

  1815. kingdom

  1816. who

  1817. Jesus

  1818. would

  1819. declare

  1820. of us

  1821. blessed

  1822. because

  1823. he

  1824. finds

  1825. us

  1826. meek.

  1827. Bridling

  1828. strength

  1829. aiming

  1830. it

  1831. at

  1832. the

  1833. glory

  1834. of

  1835. God.

  1836. Blessed

  1837. are

  1838. the

  1839. meek

  1840. for

  1841. they

  1842. shall

  1843. inherit

  1844. the

  1845. earth.

  1846. Please

  1847. join me

  1848. in

  1849. prayer.

  1850. Amen.
